  1. We're reading from Matthew 16, verse 13 to 23.

    Matthew 16:13–23

  2. Now, when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi,

  3. he asked the disciples,

  4. Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

  5. And they said, Some say John the Baptist,

  6. others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

  7. He said to them, But who do you say that I am?

  8. Simon Peter said,

  9. You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

  10. And Jesus answered him,

  11. Blessed are you, Simon Barjona,

  12. for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,

  13. but my Father who is in heaven.

  14. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,

  15. and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  16. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven,

  17. and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.

  18. and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  19. And he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

  20. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem

  21. and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes

  22. and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

  23. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying,

  24. Far be it from you, Lord.

  25. This shall never happen to you.

  26. But he turned and said to Peter,

  27. Get behind me, Satan.

  28. You are a hindrance to me.

  29. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God,

  30. but on the things of man.

  31. Well, good morning.

  32. My name is Dave.

  33. I'm one of the pastors, if I haven't met you before.

  34. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  35. Yeah, Father, as we just sung, let me echo that,

  36. the prayer of that song, that we need you to speak to us.

  37. Lord, if whatever storms are raging in our life,

  38. we need to be preoccupied and set our eyes on the Lord Jesus,

  39. because it is in him that we have hope and life and blessing.

  40. So please reveal your son to each one of us through your word.

  41. In his name I pray.

  42. Amen.

  43. Well, I've had a few important questions

  44. that have shaped my life to this point.

  45. I've had to sign a contract with the bank

  46. about where I'm going to live,

  47. and there was a lot of conditions there

  48. that I had to agree to.

  49. I've had to sign a contract with this place of work

  50. about the things I'm going to do,

  51. and I made public promises about the things I'm going to do.

  52. I had to answer a bunch of questions.

  53. And perhaps more fundamental again

  54. is when Martin Shadwick married Emma and I,

  55. he asked, do you take...

  56. Oh, wait, what did he ask?

  57. What's the question?

  58. I forgot the wording of it.

  59. Oh, how awful.

  60. Yeah, anyway, I gave consent.

  61. I promise I did.

  62. Pete did a video.

  63. I can play it.

  64. I can prove it.

  65. Now, these things have really shaped my life.

  66. And there's probably other questions too

  67. that are important in your life.

  68. But we're coming to a passage that is confronting us

  69. and telling us there is one ultimate question

  70. that defines who you are and your future.

  71. It defines whether you have hope,

  72. whether you have blessing,

  73. whether you have life.

  74. There is one ultimate question.

  75. And that question has nothing to do with you or me.

  76. It's got nothing to do with what you do

  77. and what you're agreeing to.

  78. Jesus is asking each one of us

  79. through the words of Matthew here,

  80. who do you say that I am?

  81. I think this question,

  82. we wrestle with it because,

  83. or I wrestle with it precisely because

  84. it's got nothing to do with me

  85. and what I can do.

  86. The Word of God says that

  87. based on the answer to this question,

  88. our eternity weighs in the balance,

  89. whether we are right with God,

  90. whether we have blessing forever in his kingdom or not.

  91. Romans 10, 9 and 10 says,

  92. if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord

  93. and believe in your heart

  94. that God raised him from the dead,

  95. you will be saved.

  96. That's it.

  97. You will be saved.

  98. Based on the answer to this question.

  99. So this passage,

  100. it marks a climax and a turning point

  101. in Matthew's account of the life of Jesus so far.

  102. His purpose hasn't been to give us

  103. a whole bunch of isolated stories

  104. like a children's book,

  105. which we can pick and choose our favourite

  106. and just get spiritual lessons from them,

  107. like they're fables or something.

  108. His purpose from the very first sentence

  109. is to paint a picture of the Jesus that people met.

  110. He's assembling the evidence.

  111. He could have put way more in here,

  112. but he's chosen this

  113. and he's brought us to this point

  114. and he's basically telling us, the reader,

  115. you've seen enough.

  116. It's time to decide.

  117. You need to start deciding.

  118. At the passage just prior,

  119. the Pharisees had already come to their conclusion.

  120. They demand an irrefutable sign

  121. that he is sent from heaven,

  122. which sounds very godly,

  123. as if they're going to respond based on the evidence,

  124. but what are they actually doing?

  125. What they're doing is dismissing everything

  126. they've heard and seen.

  127. It is not godly at all.

  128. So what about us?

  129. After all we have heard and seen,

  130. are we going to demand more

  131. and bring our own questions,

  132. demands for Jesus to answer?

  133. He doesn't dance to their tune.

  134. He won't answer according to their criteria.

  135. He won't answer according to ours.

  136. He's asking us to look at him

  137. and what he has said and done.

  138. In verse 13,

  139. we are told that Jesus and the Twelve

  140. are far north of Galilee.

  141. They're far away from Jerusalem,

  142. in the heart of Gentile territory.

  143. It's almost a visual representation, I think,

  144. that he's taken his disciples

  145. away from the religious leaders,

  146. away from this religious thinking,

  147. for them to come up with their conclusion

  148. about who he is.

  149. And just before this,

  150. we have a warning.

  151. Beware of the teaching

  152. of these religious leaders.

  153. Beware of this kind of teaching.

  154. Just a little bit of it

  155. can spread through the whole.

  156. If you think like this,

  157. it will blind you to who I am

  158. and God's salvation.

  159. Human criteria,

  160. religious criteria,

  161. will keep us blind to God's salvation.

  162. What I mean by religious criteria

  163. is anything that presumes

  164. that God blesses or curses

  165. based on what you do or don't do.

  166. So,

  167. we have three groups of people

  168. and three responses to Jesus.

  169. The first group is the religious leaders.

  170. We know their conclusion already.

  171. They're determined to destroy Jesus.

  172. They want nothing to do with him.

  173. They want him out of their lives.

  174. They've concluded

  175. he can't be from God.

  176. He's not religious enough.

  177. How about that?

  178. Jesus isn't religious enough.

  179. His lineage is of no account.

  180. He defiles himself

  181. by being a friend of sinners

  182. and tax collectors and Gentiles.

  183. He doesn't keep the traditions

  184. of the elders of the law.

  185. He claims authority above the law,

  186. breaking the Sabbath.

  187. He makes himself equal with God,

  188. claiming to be able to forgive sins.

  189. Like,

  190. this guy,

  191. we've got to get rid of him.

  192. He's not religious enough

  193. and he's arrogant.

  194. Their conclusion,

  195. he's a fraud.

  196. Then we've got the crowds.

  197. What about the crowds?

  198. Well,

  199. the crowds have a much higher view of Jesus,

  200. don't they?

  201. Which

  202. probably isn't surprising

  203. since

  204. they've

  205. seen so many miracles

  206. and wonders,

  207. all the healing

  208. of their family members

  209. and their community.

  210. They've got a higher view of Jesus.

  211. And their responses

  212. are really thoughtful.

  213. They're respectful.

  214. They're believing

  215. he does have divine authority.

  216. John the Baptist,

  217. like the prophets of old,

  218. he spoke with the authority of God,

  219. urging repentance from sin,

  220. willing to oppose kings

  221. for their ungodliness.

  222. Maybe they saw a bit of that

  223. in Jesus.

  224. Maybe they saw something like Elijah

  225. who demonstrated

  226. a faithfulness to God

  227. when the whole nation

  228. wasn't faithful.

  229. Or the working wonders

  230. and miracles that Elijah did,

  231. raising the dead

  232. and cleansing lepers.

  233. But now it's just on a,

  234. it's just been amplified

  235. the amount of miracles

  236. Jesus does.

  237. Or maybe they saw

  238. something of the suffering

  239. of the prophet Jeremiah

  240. and Jesus.

  241. The confrontation

  242. with the religious leaders.

  243. Maybe they saw something

  244. of his suffering.

  245. These are all

  246. the very thoughtful

  247. answers,

  248. respectful answers.

  249. But Matthew

  250. has showed us

  251. a picture

  252. of Jesus

  253. that yes,

  254. he occupies

  255. the category of prophet,

  256. a messenger from God,

  257. but there's just

  258. something about him

  259. that breaks

  260. that box.

  261. There's words and deeds

  262. that he is creating

  263. a whole new category

  264. for himself.

  265. So the Pharisees,

  266. they are so far away

  267. from the truth

  268. and the crowds

  269. are so much closer

  270. to the truth.

  271. But the problem is

  272. whether you are drowning

  273. 100 kilometres

  274. out to sea

  275. or drowning

  276. 100 metres

  277. from the shore,

  278. you are still

  279. in grave danger.

  280. The context

  281. suggests

  282. a reason

  283. for these

  284. dangerous conclusions

  285. which is

  286. Jesus'

  287. warning of

  288. beware

  289. of the religious

  290. teaching.

  291. Anything

  292. that presumes

  293. that God

  294. blesses

  295. or doesn't bless

  296. based on

  297. what you do.

  298. I think

  299. that explains

  300. the crowd's

  301. conclusion

  302. of the prophet.

  303. See,

  304. a prophet

  305. tells you

  306. who God is

  307. and what he

  308. wants from you.

  309. We need

  310. more than

  311. a prophet.

  312. We need

  313. more than

  314. someone saying

  315. this is true

  316. and this is

  317. what you should

  318. do.

  319. He's not

  320. just

  321. a good

  322. teacher

  323. and example

  324. to follow.

  325. If that's

  326. the case,

  327. that's just

  328. religious thinking.

  329. Beware

  330. of that.

  331. I'm going

  332. to give

  333. a modern

  334. example of

  335. it because

  336. to hopefully

  337. help us

  338. grasp this

  339. for us

  340. today.

  341. I'm not

  342. sure if

  343. you've

  344. heard of

  345. this guy

  346. or if

  347. you listen

  348. to him

  349. or not.

  350. I know

  351. a few

  352. people have

  353. read some

  354. of his

  355. books.

  356. Jordan

  357. Peterson,

  358. he does

  359. a lot of

  360. podcasts

  361. and speaks

  362. a lot.

  363. I've heard

  364. him say

  365. incredible

  366. statements.

  367. He reads

  368. the

  369. Gospels

  370. and he

  371. finds it

  372. hard to

  373. believe

  374. that it

  375. was just

  376. humans who

  377. wrote this

  378. because Jesus

  379. is too

  380. clever is

  381. basically his

  382. point.

  383. That's a

  384. profound

  385. statement.

  386. He often

  387. refers to

  388. Christ as

  389. the ultimate

  390. example of

  391. virtue, of

  392. goodness, of

  393. beauty, who

  394. we should be

  395. imitating.

  396. him.

  397. They're

  398. incredible

  399. statements.

  400. But that's

  401. the problem.

  402. He stops

  403. there.

  404. Yes, Jesus

  405. might be

  406. someone to

  407. imitate but

  408. he never

  409. says that

  410. he is

  411. king to

  412. whom we

  413. must give

  414. our lives.

  415. He never

  416. says he

  417. is saviour

  418. because I'm

  419. a sinner in

  420. great need.

  421. That's the

  422. danger of

  423. it.

  424. It can

  425. sound so

  426. respectful,

  427. so close

  428. to the

  429. truth and

  430. yet so

  431. far away.

  432. Because of

  433. our sin,

  434. because of

  435. the curse

  436. of living

  437. in a broken

  438. world that

  439. we're wrestling

  440. with every

  441. day, because

  442. death is

  443. the wages

  444. of sin and

  445. hangs over

  446. all of us

  447. like a dark

  448. cloud, we

  449. need a

  450. saviour.

  451. We don't

  452. just need a

  453. prophet, we

  454. need a

  455. saviour.

  456. We need a

  457. king.

  458. So to

  459. see Christ

  460. for who

  461. he is, we

  462. need to be

  463. emptied of

  464. this religious

  465. thinking.

  466. And we

  467. need to come

  468. to the

  469. gospel portrait

  470. of Jesus

  471. that Matthew

  472. has showed

  473. us and let

  474. him define

  475. himself.

  476. So that

  477. brings us to

  478. the third

  479. group, the

  480. disciples.

  481. disciples.

  482. So verse

  483. 15, the

  484. question here,

  485. but who do

  486. you say that

  487. I am?

  488. It's important

  489. we know that

  490. the you there

  491. is plural.

  492. We don't

  493. really have a

  494. way of saying

  495. that in

  496. English.

  497. Who do you

  498. say that I

  499. am?

  500. Who do y'all

  501. say that I

  502. am?

  503. It's plural.

  504. So we can

  505. take Peter's

  506. response here

  507. as representing

  508. the 12.

  509. You are

  510. the Christ,

  511. the king,

  512. the son of

  513. the living

  514. God.

  515. Now all

  516. the gospels

  517. agree with

  518. slight variations

  519. on this

  520. conclusion.

  521. So Mark

  522. says you

  523. are the

  524. Christ.

  525. Luke, the

  526. Christ of

  527. God.

  528. John's

  529. gospel, the

  530. Christ, the

  531. son of

  532. God.

  533. This

  534. confession,

  535. this

  536. expression of

  537. belief is

  538. what qualifies

  539. you to be a

  540. Christian, to

  541. belong to

  542. Jesus and

  543. be saved.

  544. Full stop.

  545. We want to

  546. add to that

  547. because I

  548. think we're so

  549. prone to that

  550. religious thinking.

  551. Full stop.

  552. If this is

  553. your confession,

  554. you are

  555. saved.

  556. there's no

  557. more to

  558. it.

  559. Jesus'

  560. declaration to

  561. Peter belongs

  562. to you as

  563. well.

  564. Blessed are

  565. you.

  566. You are

  567. blessed.

  568. You may not

  569. feel blessed

  570. with things

  571. going on in

  572. your life.

  573. You are

  574. blessed if

  575. you can make

  576. this confession

  577. salvation.

  578. Because all

  579. God's promises

  580. of heaven, of

  581. relationship with

  582. him are

  583. yours because

  584. you have the

  585. son.

  586. But it's the

  587. father who

  588. reveals the

  589. son to us.

  590. We can't work

  591. this out in our

  592. own intelligence,

  593. our own

  594. wisdom.

  595. wisdom.

  596. The father

  597. reveals the

  598. son.

  599. The one who

  600. created the

  601. son to shine

  602. brightly also

  603. needs to give

  604. eyes so that we

  605. can see that

  606. light.

  607. Same too

  608. spiritually.

  609. The father has

  610. revealed the

  611. son for all the

  612. world to see.

  613. We have the

  614. Bible.

  615. We have

  616. teachers across

  617. the world in

  618. all different

  619. churches teaching

  620. this gospel.

  621. people.

  622. It's been

  623. revealed.

  624. But the

  625. father must also

  626. give you eyes

  627. spiritually speaking

  628. to see.

  629. We are all in

  630. darkness in our

  631. natural state, in

  632. our religious

  633. assumptions.

  634. actions.

  635. So if you can

  636. see Jesus'

  637. light, don't

  638. credit your own

  639. knowledge.

  640. Don't credit

  641. your own wisdom

  642. for working it

  643. out.

  644. Don't even

  645. credit your own

  646. humility for

  647. accepting that you

  648. need a saviour.

  649. There's only one

  650. reason you can

  651. see and that's

  652. because the

  653. father has

  654. shared his

  655. view of his

  656. son to you,

  657. he's opened

  658. your eyes.

  659. It's purely

  660. grace.

  661. Not even this

  662. confession is

  663. your doing.

  664. He created

  665. it.

  666. If you are

  667. struggling to

  668. see Jesus,

  669. then the

  670. answer is

  671. ask God

  672. to open

  673. your eyes.

  674. He's only

  675. too ready to

  676. answer that

  677. kind of

  678. prayer.

  679. So

  680. understanding

  681. what it

  682. means for

  683. Jesus to

  684. be the

  685. Christ,

  686. we must

  687. also

  688. understand

  689. what content

  690. to put in

  691. that and

  692. what he

  693. came to

  694. do, his

  695. mission.

  696. And we're

  697. told that in

  698. the next

  699. verse, his

  700. mission is

  701. to build the

  702. church.

  703. The church,

  704. not just the

  705. institution,

  706. talking the

  707. people, his

  708. people.

  709. He came to

  710. build his

  711. people.

  712. And notice

  713. Christ himself

  714. is the

  715. builder.

  716. I will

  717. build my

  718. church.

  719. We might

  720. think it's

  721. the

  722. Christian's

  723. job.

  724. Yes, we've

  725. got a role

  726. to play in

  727. that.

  728. But no,

  729. it's Christ

  730. who builds

  731. the church.

  732. Now,

  733. surprisingly,

  734. he says,

  735. now for you

  736. who like

  737. puns, and

  738. I'm thinking

  739. of you,

  740. Joel Kelsey,

  741. Peter,

  742. Greek

  743. Petros,

  744. can both

  745. mean a

  746. rock and

  747. is a

  748. male name.

  749. So,

  750. there's the

  751. pun.

  752. You,

  753. Peter,

  754. on this

  755. rock I

  756. will build

  757. my church

  758. and the

  759. gates of

  760. hell shall

  761. not prevail

  762. against it.

  763. Now,

  764. these verses

  765. are hotly

  766. debated and

  767. so I'm

  768. going to

  769. use the

  770. excuse of

  771. time to

  772. just do

  773. a pretty

  774. cursory

  775. summary of

  776. the options

  777. and I'll

  778. share what

  779. I think

  780. that I

  781. encourage you

  782. to talk

  783. more over

  784. morning tea.

  785. So,

  786. assuming that

  787. Jesus isn't

  788. just cracking

  789. a joke,

  790. a pun,

  791. he wants

  792. to make a

  793. point here.

  794. What is

  795. the rock?

  796. What is

  797. the bedrock

  798. of the

  799. foundation

  800. of the

  801. church?

  802. Well,

  803. the Catholic

  804. view,

  805. this verse

  806. is critical

  807. to the

  808. Catholic

  809. view of

  810. having a

  811. Pope,

  812. having a

  813. representative

  814. of Christ

  815. on earth,

  816. a successor

  817. to Peter,

  818. linking that

  819. with verse

  820. 19.

  821. I'm going

  822. to give

  823. you the

  824. keys of

  825. the

  826. kingdom

  827. of heaven.

  828. But,

  829. there's

  830. nothing

  831. mentioned

  832. here about

  833. a successor

  834. to Peter.

  835. While

  836. Acts and

  837. the epistles

  838. show that

  839. Peter is

  840. something,

  841. along with

  842. James and

  843. John,

  844. something of

  845. a first

  846. among equals

  847. of the

  848. early church,

  849. he's never

  850. painted as

  851. having exclusive

  852. authority.

  853. There's no

  854. circumstance

  855. where his

  856. final judgment

  857. is the

  858. authority on

  859. the matter.

  860. An example

  861. there is

  862. Acts 15,

  863. where they

  864. had the

  865. council in

  866. Jerusalem.

  867. Peter doesn't

  868. give the

  869. final verdict.

  870. I think you

  871. would expect

  872. that if

  873. Peter was the

  874. head of the

  875. church in

  876. a pope

  877. sense.

  878. Nor is

  879. Peter infallible,

  880. like we see

  881. that in the

  882. very next

  883. paragraph.

  884. And Paul

  885. had to

  886. rebuke

  887. Peter publicly

  888. because he

  889. was acting

  890. in a way

  891. that undermined

  892. the gospel.

  893. So he's not

  894. infallible

  895. either.

  896. So there's

  897. a whole bunch

  898. of reasons

  899. why that

  900. Catholic view

  901. of a

  902. successor,

  903. head of

  904. the church,

  905. a pope

  906. view,

  907. doesn't stand

  908. the weight

  909. of

  910. scripture.

  911. So what

  912. are the

  913. other

  914. options?

  915. Broadly

  916. taken,

  917. maybe Peter

  918. here is

  919. representing

  920. all believers.

  921. So he's

  922. just the

  923. first stone

  924. laid as

  925. Jesus

  926. builds his

  927. church,

  928. person by

  929. person.

  930. Or some

  931. other

  932. significance

  933. of the

  934. fact that

  935. Peter is

  936. addressed

  937. personally,

  938. so maybe

  939. just the

  940. leader of

  941. the early

  942. church.

  943. Or is

  944. he

  945. representing

  946. the

  947. twelve

  948. apostles?

  949. Or another

  950. option is

  951. that it's

  952. not Peter

  953. who's the

  954. rock,

  955. but it's

  956. the confession

  957. Peter makes.

  958. You are

  959. the Christ.

  960. That is

  961. the rock

  962. of the

  963. church.

  964. Okay,

  965. there's the

  966. options.

  967. I'm not

  968. going to go

  969. into it

  970. too much

  971. more.

  972. You guys

  973. can debate

  974. it over

  975. morning tea.

  976. I'm just

  977. going to

  978. show you

  979. where I'm

  980. up to.

  981. If Peter

  982. is the

  983. representative

  984. of the

  985. twelve

  986. when he

  987. makes that

  988. confession,

  989. you are

  990. the

  991. Christ.

  992. He's

  993. speaking

  994. on behalf

  995. of the

  996. twelve.

  997. Then maybe

  998. he's also

  999. representing

  1000. the twelve

  1001. when Jesus

  1002. speaks to

  1003. him here.

  1004. So it's

  1005. the apostles

  1006. who are

  1007. the rock,

  1008. the foundation

  1009. of the

  1010. church.

  1011. Now I

  1012. like that

  1013. in my

  1014. current

  1015. thinking

  1016. because

  1017. that

  1018. aligns

  1019. with other

  1020. pictures

  1021. of God.

  1022. Like

  1023. Ephesians 2,

  1024. the apostles

  1025. are the

  1026. foundation of

  1027. the temple

  1028. or Revelation

  1029. 22.

  1030. They are the

  1031. foundation of

  1032. the city

  1033. of God

  1034. that we're

  1035. hoping for.

  1036. To me

  1037. I think

  1038. this fits

  1039. because

  1040. your confession,

  1041. if you're a

  1042. believer,

  1043. your confession

  1044. of Jesus,

  1045. what is it

  1046. based on?

  1047. It's not

  1048. based on

  1049. other

  1050. Christians

  1051. primarily

  1052. telling you

  1053. the gospel.

  1054. It's based

  1055. on

  1056. what the

  1057. apostles

  1058. have told

  1059. us,

  1060. their

  1061. eyewitness

  1062. testimony

  1063. in their

  1064. confession.

  1065. So that's

  1066. why I'm

  1067. saying I

  1068. think the

  1069. rock represents

  1070. the twelve.

  1071. Our

  1072. confession

  1073. is based

  1074. on this

  1075. first confession

  1076. of the twelve.

  1077. So I'll

  1078. leave that

  1079. with you.

  1080. Then we

  1081. have a

  1082. wonderful

  1083. promise.

  1084. The gates

  1085. of hell

  1086. shall not

  1087. prevail against

  1088. the church.

  1089. Now gates

  1090. here can

  1091. mean

  1092. fortifications,

  1093. so the

  1094. full forces,

  1095. the full

  1096. army of

  1097. hell or

  1098. Hades,

  1099. the place

  1100. of the dead.

  1101. So I think

  1102. RSV translation

  1103. can help us.

  1104. the powers

  1105. of death

  1106. shall not

  1107. prevail against

  1108. it.

  1109. And I

  1110. think this

  1111. is incredible

  1112. because let's

  1113. face it,

  1114. death prevails

  1115. against

  1116. everything.

  1117. Doesn't

  1118. it?

  1119. Isn't

  1120. that why

  1121. life is so

  1122. painful?

  1123. Death

  1124. prevails

  1125. against

  1126. everyone

  1127. and

  1128. everything.

  1129. But

  1130. death is

  1131. not just

  1132. the natural

  1133. life cycle,

  1134. it's the

  1135. wages of

  1136. sin.

  1137. This is

  1138. crucial to

  1139. know how

  1140. Jesus builds

  1141. his church.

  1142. He must

  1143. take the

  1144. curse on

  1145. sin that

  1146. we deserve.

  1147. Death

  1148. won't prevail

  1149. against his

  1150. church because

  1151. death didn't

  1152. prevail against

  1153. him.

  1154. He took

  1155. that curse,

  1156. paid it in

  1157. fall and

  1158. raised from

  1159. the dead.

  1160. There's

  1161. nothing,

  1162. there's no

  1163. wages to

  1164. pay anymore.

  1165. It didn't

  1166. prevail against

  1167. him, so

  1168. all who

  1169. are united

  1170. him, it

  1171. won't prevail.

  1172. Nothing is

  1173. able to

  1174. separate us

  1175. from the

  1176. love of

  1177. God in

  1178. Christ Jesus

  1179. our Lord.

  1180. God, what a

  1181. wonderful hope

  1182. we have.

  1183. And if you

  1184. don't yet know

  1185. this kind of

  1186. hope, then I

  1187. would urge you

  1188. to keep

  1189. wrestling with

  1190. this ultimate

  1191. question because

  1192. that's where

  1193. you'll find

  1194. hope.

  1195. Who do you

  1196. say that I

  1197. am?

  1198. Well, so

  1199. far we've

  1200. been focusing

  1201. on what

  1202. Christ does.

  1203. He will

  1204. build the

  1205. church, he

  1206. will make

  1207. sure death

  1208. doesn't

  1209. prevail.

  1210. Then we

  1211. get a

  1212. surprising

  1213. role given

  1214. to the

  1215. apostles and

  1216. to the

  1217. church.

  1218. I will

  1219. give you

  1220. the keys

  1221. of the

  1222. kingdom of

  1223. heaven.

  1224. Now, I

  1225. don't know

  1226. about you,

  1227. but my

  1228. reaction to

  1229. that is,

  1230. hang on,

  1231. don't do

  1232. that, not

  1233. a good

  1234. idea.

  1235. Jesus, are

  1236. you sure

  1237. you want

  1238. to put

  1239. that kind

  1240. of authority

  1241. in people's

  1242. hands?

  1243. Because the

  1244. keys is a

  1245. picture

  1246. representing

  1247. like you

  1248. can unlock

  1249. the door and

  1250. let people

  1251. in to the

  1252. kingdom of

  1253. heaven or

  1254. you can

  1255. shut it.

  1256. And there's

  1257. a guarantee

  1258. given,

  1259. whatever you

  1260. bind on

  1261. earth shall

  1262. be bound

  1263. in heaven,

  1264. whatever you

  1265. loose on

  1266. earth shall

  1267. be loosed

  1268. in heaven.

  1269. I think

  1270. what helps

  1271. us to

  1272. understand

  1273. these

  1274. keys is

  1275. to look

  1276. at a

  1277. negative

  1278. example

  1279. of the

  1280. keys in

  1281. Luke 11

  1282. 52 and

  1283. then Matthew

  1284. 23, 13.

  1285. So let me

  1286. read.

  1287. say, Jesus

  1288. saying to the

  1289. teachers of

  1290. the law,

  1291. woe to

  1292. you lawyers,

  1293. for you

  1294. have taken

  1295. away the

  1296. key of

  1297. knowledge.

  1298. You did

  1299. not enter

  1300. yourselves and

  1301. you hindered

  1302. those who

  1303. were entering.

  1304. And then the

  1305. Matthew equivalent

  1306. of that verse,

  1307. woe to you

  1308. scribes and

  1309. Pharisees, you

  1310. hypocrites, for

  1311. you shut the

  1312. kingdom of

  1313. heaven in

  1314. people's faces,

  1315. for you neither

  1316. enter yourselves

  1317. nor allow those

  1318. who would enter

  1319. to go in.

  1320. Now how did

  1321. they have the

  1322. keys?

  1323. They had the

  1324. keys because

  1325. they were

  1326. teachers.

  1327. And what they

  1328. were teaching

  1329. wasn't true

  1330. knowledge.

  1331. It was

  1332. religious,

  1333. focused on

  1334. self, not

  1335. focused on

  1336. trust in what

  1337. God can do.

  1338. And so they

  1339. were shutting

  1340. the door of

  1341. heaven for

  1342. people.

  1343. That's the

  1344. negative example.

  1345. So I think

  1346. that helps us

  1347. understand what

  1348. Jesus is saying

  1349. here.

  1350. Based on this

  1351. confession,

  1352. apostles and

  1353. church, you

  1354. can open the

  1355. door to heaven

  1356. for people by

  1357. professing this

  1358. gospel that

  1359. Jesus is the

  1360. Christ, the

  1361. Son of God.

  1362. In as much as

  1363. we can get that

  1364. across, we are

  1365. opening a door

  1366. for people to

  1367. come in.

  1368. What an

  1369. incredible

  1370. privilege.

  1371. Again, it's

  1372. Christ who

  1373. builds his

  1374. church, but

  1375. he's going to

  1376. do it through

  1377. this confession

  1378. that every

  1379. Christian has.

  1380. I'm not

  1381. talking evangelism

  1382. here.

  1383. I'm saying if

  1384. you're a

  1385. Christian, you

  1386. confess Christ.

  1387. That's what it

  1388. is to be a

  1389. Christian.

  1390. And as much

  1391. as your life

  1392. and your words

  1393. can show that,

  1394. we have the

  1395. privilege of

  1396. having the

  1397. keys of the

  1398. kingdom.

  1399. We have the

  1400. gospel to

  1401. share.

  1402. So how

  1403. exciting this

  1404. moment must

  1405. have been for

  1406. the apostles.

  1407. Here they

  1408. have this

  1409. special relationship

  1410. with the king

  1411. of the world,

  1412. promising that

  1413. they are

  1414. blessed, they

  1415. are part of

  1416. his people,

  1417. that they

  1418. have the

  1419. father as

  1420. well.

  1421. Simply on the

  1422. basis of

  1423. seeing and

  1424. confessing who

  1425. he is, that

  1426. they have

  1427. hope that

  1428. death will

  1429. not prevail,

  1430. and they've

  1431. given such a

  1432. privileged role

  1433. in proclaiming

  1434. this confession

  1435. of faith to

  1436. others also.

  1437. Now it's

  1438. precisely because

  1439. of their

  1440. conviction that

  1441. Jesus is the

  1442. Christ that

  1443. when he started

  1444. to lay out

  1445. his plan for

  1446. ascending the

  1447. throne, that's

  1448. what brings

  1449. about this

  1450. reaction, or

  1451. part of it

  1452. at least.

  1453. Okay, we're

  1454. going to go to

  1455. Jerusalem.

  1456. Fantastic.

  1457. That's where we

  1458. should go.

  1459. I'm going to

  1460. suffer.

  1461. Okay, not so

  1462. good, but I

  1463. suppose we

  1464. shouldn't have

  1465. expected it to

  1466. be easy.

  1467. At the hands of

  1468. elders and chief

  1469. priests and

  1470. scribes.

  1471. I was expecting

  1472. Roman army there,

  1473. but I don't know

  1474. why you'd submit

  1475. to those guys

  1476. and be killed.

  1477. Hang on.

  1478. They probably

  1479. barely heard the

  1480. next part about

  1481. being raised.

  1482. Peter, on the

  1483. one hand, the

  1484. first part of the

  1485. passage, he is

  1486. thinking God's

  1487. thoughts about the

  1488. Christ because the

  1489. Father had revealed

  1490. it to him, and

  1491. here he now

  1492. arrogantly presumes

  1493. that he knows

  1494. God's plan, God's

  1495. will, better than

  1496. the Christ.

  1497. that's not the

  1498. plan.

  1499. As if he's just

  1500. saying to the

  1501. Christ he's

  1502. confessed, hang

  1503. on, I'm not sure

  1504. you understand what

  1505. Lord means.

  1506. It doesn't mean

  1507. that.

  1508. I don't know

  1509. about you, but

  1510. don't we have the

  1511. same reaction?

  1512. Most days, I'm

  1513. spilling over into

  1514. next week's

  1515. passage, but

  1516. Jesus told his

  1517. disciples, if

  1518. anyone would come

  1519. after me, he must

  1520. deny himself and

  1521. take up his cross

  1522. and follow me.

  1523. I can relate to

  1524. Peter's reaction

  1525. here when

  1526. discipleship means

  1527. following the

  1528. path of suffering.

  1529. That's not the

  1530. plan.

  1531. Don't you

  1532. understand, Lord,

  1533. what it means to

  1534. be Lord?

  1535. But anyway, we'll

  1536. come to that next

  1537. week.

1538. We need to first be

  1539. gripped by what

  1540. Jesus does on our

  1541. behalf before we

  1542. look at what it

  1543. means to follow

  1544. him.

  1545. Peter thinks he

  1546. can contribute

  1547. something, that he

  1548. has a better way,

  1549. that maybe he could

  1550. fight for the king.

  1551. But this rock's

  1552. contribution just

  1553. becomes a stumbling

  1554. block.

  1555. book.

  1556. It's only after the

  1557. resurrection that

  1558. Peter really

  1559. understands the

  1560. full picture of

  1561. who Christ is.

  1562. It's genuine

  1563. belief here, but

  1564. it's partial.

  1565. He doesn't fully

  1566. get it.

  1567. And Jesus sees the

  1568. same temptation he

  1569. received after his

  1570. baptism and the

  1571. same temptation he's

1572. going to face in the

  1573. garden of Gethsemane.

  1574. He sees that same

  1575. temptation through the

  1576. words of Peter.

  1577. You can be king

  1578. without going to the

  1579. cross.

  1580. Now here's the

  1581. beautiful thing.

1582. Look at the king we

  1583. have.

  1584. He doesn't for a

  1585. moment entertain

  1586. that temptation.

  1587. He is determined to

  1588. be trusting his

  1589. father and trusting

  1590. his father's plan to

  1591. take the path of

  1592. suffering, to take

  1593. the death for our

  1594. sake, for our

  1595. salvation.

  1596. Peter contributes

  1597. nothing to this plan.

  1598. If anything, he's an

  1599. obstacle to it.

  1600. You and I contribute

  1601. nothing to our

  1602. salvation.

  1603. We don't even need a

  1604. complete understanding

  1605. of Jesus.

  1606. Yes, you need to

  1607. understand he died for

  1608. sins and was raised,

1609. but can we really have a

  1610. complete understanding of

  1611. that?

  1612. You don't even need a

  1613. consistent trust in

  1614. Jesus.

  1615. Even if you're a

  1616. Christian, if you

  1617. declare faith, even

  1618. that has been given

  1619. to you by the

  1620. Father opening your

  1621. eyes, we contribute

  1622. nothing to our

  1623. salvation.

  1624. It's his faith to

  1625. his father.

  1626. It's his faithfulness to

  1627. his father's plan that

  1628. saves us.

1629. this king is so full of

  1630. grace.

1631. All he wants is for us

  1632. to stop thinking in

1633. terms of what we do.

  1634. Stop looking at that.

1635. Look to him, who he is,

  1636. what he has done.

1637. That all the death, the

1638. curse of sin for our

  1639. unfaithfulness that you and

1640. I do deserve, he takes it.

  1641. All of heaven's blessings

  1642. because of his faithfulness

  1643. that you and I don't

  1644. deserve, he gives it.

  1645. We contribute nothing.

  1646. Which makes this question

  1647. the only ultimate question

  1648. in life.

1649. Because it's not about what

  1650. you can contribute, it's

1651. about who he is and what

  1652. he has done.

  1653. Can I urge you, don't

1654. rest until you can answer

  1655. it.

1656. Rejoice if you can and

  1657. give glory to the

  1658. father's grace in giving

  1659. you eyes to see.

1660. Keep coming back to it

  1661. when your perspective

  1662. turns in on yourself

  1663. again and again.

1664. Keep coming back to it.

  1665. And realise the privilege

1666. and calling we have that

1667. we have the keys to open

  1668. up heaven for people.

  1669. Inasmuch as we profess

  1670. that Jesus is the

1671. Christ, the son of the

1672. living God in whom is

  1673. hope and blessing in

  1674. life.

  1675. Let me pray.

  1676. Let's pray.

  1677. Father, thank you for

  1678. sending your son and

1679. Lord Jesus, thank you for

  1680. coming and choosing to

1681. going to go to the

  1682. cross.

1683. Not because you had to

  1684. but because you delighted

1685. to trust your father and

  1686. obey your father.

1687. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for

1688. opening our eyes so that we

1689. can confess Jesus as Lord

  1690. and be saved.

1691. And Lord, I pray that you

  1692. would be continuing to

  1693. build your church.

1694. Lord, if there's anyone here

1695. today who doesn't know you,

1696. use my weak words to do

  1697. powerful things in their

  1698. heart.

1699. And Lord, for all of us,

1700. please help us to keep

  1701. coming back again and

1702. again to who you are and

1703. what you have done and not

  1704. ourselves.

  1705. In Jesus' name, amen.
