  1. Matthew 16 verses 21 to 28. This comes just after Peter has confessed that Jesus is the

    Matthew 16:21–28

  2. Christ. So 16 verses 21 to 28.

  3. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many

  4. things from the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day

  5. be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying, far be it from you Lord,

  6. this shall never happen to you. But he turned and said to Peter, get behind me Satan,

  7. you are a hindrance to me for you are not setting your mind on the things of God but on the things

  8. of man. Then Jesus told his disciples, if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take

  9. up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life

  10. for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his

  11. soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? For the son of man is going to come with his

  12. angels in the glory of his father and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

  13. Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the son of

  14. man coming in his kingdom.

  15. Well good morning everyone.

  16. It's good that there's three people awake this morning.

  17. My name's Dave. I've met you before. I'm one of the pastors here and I really hope you can stick around

  18. for lunch after the service. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word. Let's pray.

  19. Father, you have words for us this morning that challenge us deep into our heart, to our very bone.

  20. And so Lord, if you don't help us have humility in hearing your word, there's going to be so many

  21. things that get in the way from hearing you. So I pray for your help for all of us to sit under your

  22. word and so that we might have life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

  23. Well, what does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus? What does it look like?

  24. Do you think of it in terms of making Jesus your top priority in life?

  25. Is he to be first on your agenda? Put him first with your time, put him first with your money,

  26. put him first with your abilities, put him first.

  27. Trying to do that, I don't know if you found this, is super hard in a culture that is obsessed

  28. with self. But having Jesus as your top priority, first on your agenda, falls far short of what

  29. Jesus calls you and I to in our passage today. He's not going to settle for being first with

  30. first on your agenda. He wants to set for you a totally new agenda.

  31. I want to do two things today as we try and answer the question,

  32. what does it look like to pledge allegiance to this suffering king? So Peter has confessed him as

  33. the Christ and then he immediately says, here's my plan, I'm going to submit and suffer and die.

  34. What does it look like to belong to this kind of king?

  35. So first, I want to spend some time seeing that his call to deny self and to take up our cross is a call

  36. to come and die.

  37. Die to self-rule.

  38. The second thing I want to do today is to see how this king motivates us.

  39. He doesn't motivate us through compulsion, he motivates us through choice.

  40. So that's where we're going. Let me just say one statement from the outset.

  41. Let's be clear on this. Jesus' words here are not a prerequisite for being a Christian.

  42. You don't have to do this to become a Christian.

  43. That's totally based on confessing Jesus as Lord.

  44. The belief that confesses Jesus as Lord, you're a Christian, you're saved.

  45. What's here is a description of what it means to live the saved life.

  46. It's not how you become saved, it's how you live being saved.

  47. And it's a description for all disciples.

  48. This isn't just for keen beings.

  49. This is discipleship 101.

  50. Okay, so what does it mean to confess allegiance to a king who chooses to suffer

  51. and submit to those who are under his authority?

  52. What does it mean to believe in the son of the living God who chooses to die?

  53. Verse 24.

  54. Verse 24.

  55. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  56. I wonder what you're imagining by that call of deny yourself.

  57. Are you hearing something like, don't be selfish?

  58. Does it mean an attitude of when you're a youth group and not enough pizza has been ordered

  59. and there's one more slice and you are salivating and you're ready to kill,

  60. but you go, oh, you have it.

  61. Is that what he's calling to, self-denial?

  62. Does it mean not living as luxurious a life as you possibly could afford

  63. so that you can give to the church and missions?

  64. Is self-denial not being selfish with your time,

  65. that you are bone-weary after a week of work,

  66. but you choose to do your part in making church happen?

  67. Don't be selfish.

  68. Is that what you're hearing?

  69. And what does take up your cross mean?

  70. Is it about the excruciating experiences of living in a broken world

  71. where someone's cross is that their adult children have turned away from God?

  72. Is that their cross?

  73. Is carrying the cross of cancer or chronic fatigue,

  74. is that your cross to bear?

  75. Is that what it means here?

  76. I think what Jesus is calling us to is even more radical still.

  77. It's more radical than not being selfish.

  78. It's more radical than enduring the painful situations of life.

  79. The word deny can mean renounce.

  80. Adam's introduction about high court's decisions.

  81. I was reminded of that saga, I don't know how long ago,

  82. it was a number of years ago,

  83. where the politicians had dual citizenships

  84. and the high court ruled that you can't stand in office

  85. if you've got allegiance to a foreign power.

  86. And that put all these politicians in a very tricky position.

  87. They had to renounce their allegiance to a foreign power.

  88. Like, imagine if what actually happened was,

  89. I'm going to renounce my Australian citizenship

  90. in any right to be a person in authority.

  91. That just wouldn't happen.

  92. But that kind of idea of renouncing allegiance

  93. is closer to what Jesus is saying here.

  94. Each person's natural-born disposition since sin entered the world

  95. is to think that you and I have a right to rule your life.

  96. That's a delusion because God made us.

  97. Our life is his.

  98. And so Jesus is saying, deny that.

  99. Your allegiance to self-rule.

  100. Deny.

  101. Renounce.

  102. And to take up your cross.

  103. Crucifixion was not only a painful execution,

  104. it was reserved for the worst of criminals.

  105. It was a public shaming.

  106. You were forced to carry the implement

  107. on which you would be condemned by the world.

  108. You were a dead man walking.

  109. As you carry that cross, you are losing your life,

  110. you're losing your reputation, anything in the world.

  111. You are dead to the world.

  112. So if you confess that Jesus really is God's king,

  113. the son of the living God,

  114. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a writer during World War II,

  115. put it famously,

  116. when Christ calls a man, when Christ calls a person,

  117. he bids him come and die.

  118. He's not exaggerating.

  119. He's saying, come and die.

  120. Renounce self in this world and give yourself to me.

  121. I think we see the problem in Peter's reaction

  122. in verses 21 to 23 that we saw last week.

  123. He just confessed Jesus to be the Christ.

  124. They've been waiting generations for this guy,

  125. for this Messiah.

  126. He's just been told he's going to have this position

  127. of influence in the kingdom.

  128. He knows that God has promised this king he's going to rule

  129. over everyone forever, bringing blessing.

  130. And after hearing Jesus' pathway to glory of suffering,

  131. he takes him aside and tells him off.

  132. Why?

  133. Well, Jesus tells us,

  134. you are not setting your mind on the things of God,

  135. but on the things of man.

  136. Peter's devotion to this world's idea of life

  137. and success and victory and glory

  138. was blinding him to true greatness,

  139. to where life could actually be found.

  140. Jesus is challenging us to see a very deep view of sin

  141. where it's allegiance to self is the problem

  142. and allegiance to this world.

  143. He isn't simply calling us to give up vaping

  144. or gambling or drinking or sexual immorality.

  145. Some of those things are very hard to be free from.

  146. But he's saying something so much more radical.

  147. He's saying,

  148. give up allegiance to self

  149. in all areas of life.

  150. Your devotion to the things that this world can offer

  151. that you're clinging to as if you must have them to have life.

  152. Because that self-rule

  153. and that idolatry of the heart

  154. is offensive to God.

  155. It is why he came to die.

  156. So to deny self

  157. and to take up our cross

  158. is a call.

  159. Come and die.

  160. Die to self, die to the world.

  161. That's discipleship 101.

  162. Again, it's not for keen beings.

  163. That's what it means to follow Jesus.

  164. So the second thing I want to do

  165. is notice how this Christ motivates us.

  166. It's not through compulsion.

  167. It's through choice.

  168. I think we see in these verses

  169. he gives us freedom to obey.

  170. Notice in verse 24

  171. that you and I are the ones

  172. who are doing the actions of these verbs.

  173. He doesn't crush self.

  174. He says,

  175. you must choose to deny self.

  176. He doesn't place the cross on us.

  177. He says,

  178. take it up willingly.

  179. He doesn't compel obedience through fear.

  180. He invites us,

  181. follow me,

  182. imitate me.

  183. It's choice.

  184. And then he gives us

  185. wonderful reasons

  186. to win over our heart

  187. so that we do this willingly.

  188. Verse 25,

  189. four.

  190. For whoever would save his life

  191. will lose it.

  192. But whoever loses his life

  193. for my sake

  194. will find it.

  195. He's warning.

  196. Death and judgment is coming.

  197. You will lose it in the end.

  198. But if you choose to give it up

  199. for my sake,

  200. then you will find your life.

  201. Notice that you don't save your life.

  202. He does the saving.

  203. You find it.

  204. You find your life.

  205. What is Jesus appealing to?

  206. You want to find life,

  207. don't you?

  208. Don't you want life?

  209. This is the most selfish thing

  210. you could do.

  211. Renounce self

  212. and give your life to Jesus.

  213. That is the most

  214. selfish thing you can do

  215. is give up self

  216. and hand it over to Jesus.

  217. That's what he's appealing to.

  218. You want life, don't you?

  219. Here's where you find it.

  220. And he doesn't stop there.

  221. He convinces us

  222. why this is the case.

  223. Verse 26.

  224. For what will it profit a man

  225. if he gains the whole world

  226. and forfeits his soul?

  227. Or what shall a man give

  228. in return for his soul?

  229. Take a good look

  230. at what this man-centered world

  231. that killed Christ

  232. wants nothing to do with him

  233. is offering you.

  234. Take a good look

  235. even if you had it all.

  236. What will it profit a person?

  237. Now, to be clear here,

  238. soul is the same word

  239. as life

  240. in the previous verse.

  241. It's not necessarily

  242. talking about

  243. the immaterial

  244. part of you.

  245. It's saying

  246. your life,

  247. your person.

  248. So put all the comfort

  249. and health,

  250. people's praise

  251. and popularity,

  252. being lovely

  253. and lovable,

  254. being important

  255. and powerful

  256. and successful,

  257. all the world's riches,

  258. no pleasure denied.

  259. Put it all

  260. on one side

  261. of the ledger

  262. and you've got

  263. all it costs you

  264. is yourself.

  265. Jesus is saying

  266. just have a think about it.

  267. You are being ripped off, man.

  268. It is a scam.

  269. It doesn't feel like a scam

  270. because the whole world

  271. is willingly

  272. buying into it.

  273. So if the man-centered world

  274. is a rip-off,

  275. we're given the true perspective

  276. in verse 27.

  277. For the Son of Man

  278. is going to come

  279. with his angels

  280. in the glory

  281. of his Father

  282. and then he will repay

  283. each person

  284. according to what he has done.

  285. If you weigh up

  286. the value

  287. of following

  288. Christ's life

  289. of suffering

  290. only in terms

  291. of this life,

  292. even Paul says,

  293. I can't remember

  294. where it is,

  295. but where to be pitied.

  296. That's not

  297. the reference point.

  298. That's not

  299. the right time frame

  300. to work it out.

  301. Like,

  302. a soccer illustration

  303. just came to my mind.

  304. The other week,

  305. we were winning 3-1

  306. at halftime,

  307. but then we lost

  308. 6-1 at the end.

  309. If halftime

  310. is not the reference point,

  311. you need the right

  312. reference point

  313. to work out

  314. what's actually going on.

  315. If we keep this

  316. eternal perspective

  317. that Christ

  318. is going to return,

  319. not to suffer again,

  320. but as judge,

  321. to repay,

  322. that's our reference point.

  323. Now,

  324. I'm expecting

  325. that that verse,

  326. that idea of repayment

  327. is probably putting

  328. dread

  329. in some people's

  330. minds right now.

  331. according to what

  332. I have done.

  333. Oh,

  334. if that's causing

  335. you dread right now,

  336. can I just

  337. urge you to

  338. find your assurance

  339. of salvation

  340. not in verse 27,

  341. but in verse 21.

  342. that he must

  343. go to Jerusalem

  344. and suffer many things

  345. and be killed

  346. and on a third day

  347. be raised.

  348. That's where your

  349. assurance is,

  350. verse 21.

  351. Verse 27

  352. is meant to be

  353. an encouragement

  354. to his people.

  355. It will be worth it

  356. in the end.

  357. This really is

  358. the path

  359. to true glory.

  360. it's saying,

  361. make no mistake,

  362. this Christ

  363. who submitted

  364. to sinful men,

  365. this Christ

  366. who became weak

  367. and who was rejected

  368. and humiliated

  369. and defeated,

  370. this guy owns

  371. angels.

  372. Do not

  373. miss the

  374. glory of this guy.

  375. He owns them.

  376. like,

  377. no one

  378. shares the glory

  379. of God,

  380. but this son

  381. does.

  382. You want,

  383. whatever glory

  384. he is offering you,

  385. you want it.

  386. With this kind

  387. of eternal

  388. perspective,

  389. it gives us

  390. resolve,

  391. it gives us

  392. joy and hope

  393. in the present,

  394. I think.

  395. Because what loss

  396. have you really

  397. suffered if in the

  398. end,

  399. if the most

  400. important people,

  401. the closest people

  402. to you even,

  403. reject you,

  404. but in the end,

  405. the one who made

  406. you and owns

  407. the angels

  408. welcomes you.

  409. what injustice

  410. have you really

  411. suffered if you

  412. forego vengeance

  413. for the king

  414. to avenge you

  415. in the end

  416. or to die

  417. for their sin

  418. and pay for it?

  419. What pleasure

  420. have you really

  421. missed out on

  422. if at his

  423. right hand

  424. are pleasures

  425. forevermore?

  426. What pleasure

  427. have you,

  428. come on,

  429. forevermore?

  430. what sacrifice

  431. have you really

  432. made in his

  433. service if he

  434. shares all the

  435. joy and blessing

  436. of his kingdom

  437. with you,

  438. knowing the

  439. father?

  440. There's a

  441. mystery,

  442. I can't even

  443. remember who

  444. it is,

  445. but David

  446. Livingston,

  447. maybe?

  448. He said,

  449. I never made

  450. a sacrifice.

  451. Because his

  452. point was,

  453. what Christ

  454. gave him

  455. totally outweighed

  456. anything he

  457. lost.

  458. And he did

  459. lose a lot.

  460. This eternal

  461. perspective can

  462. count all

  463. things as

  464. lost compared

  465. to the

  466. surpassing

  467. worth of

  468. knowing Christ

  469. my Lord.

  470. We just need

  471. the right

  472. reference point.

  473. He's going

  474. to come.

  475. Imagine that.

  476. You won't

  477. have to listen

  478. to me anymore.

  479. We're going

  480. to be before

  481. him.

  482. That day

  483. is coming.

  484. We need

  485. the right

  486. reference point.

  487. And it's

  488. so hard to

  489. keep this

  490. eternal

  491. perspective,

  492. isn't it?

  493. I think it

  494. would have

  495. been sufficient

  496. for Christ

  497. to give us

  498. his word

  499. and his

  500. promises,

  501. and we

  502. should trust

  503. him in

  504. that.

  505. But he

  506. even adds,

  507. verse 28,

  508. a guarantee,

  509. a foretaste

  510. of the glory

  511. to come.

  512. Truly I

  513. say to

  514. you,

  515. there are

  516. some standing

  517. here who

  518. will not

  519. taste death

  520. until they

  521. see the

  522. Son of Man

  523. coming in

  524. his kingdom.

  525. This is

  526. like the

  527. promise to

  528. Simeon in

  529. Luke's gospel

  530. that he's

  531. not going

  532. to experience

  533. death until

  534. he sees

  535. the promised

  536. Messiah and

  537. he gets to

  538. hold the

  539. newborn in

  540. his hands.

  541. So what

  542. did some

  543. of these

  544. apostles get

  545. to see

  546. before they

  547. experienced

  548. death?

  549. Was it

  550. the very

  551. next verse?

  552. Is that

  553. six days

  554. later,

  555. Jesus took

  556. Peter and

  557. James and

  558. John up

  559. a mountain

  560. and they

  561. saw Jesus

  562. transfigured?

  563. And what

  564. they saw

  565. just blinded

  566. them.

  567. Everything

  568. in earth

  569. just looks

  570. dim and

  571. pathetic

  572. compared to

  573. what they

  574. saw.

  575. Is that

  576. what it's

  577. referring to?

  578. Well,

  579. maybe it's

  580. referring to

  581. all the

  582. apostles except

  583. Judas,

  584. who saw

  585. Christ

  586. risen,

  587. him coming

  588. in his

  589. rule,

  590. who

  591. received

  592. his

  593. spirit

  594. to empower

  595. them on

  596. his mission

  597. to build

  598. the church.

  599. is it

  600. his reign

  601. that came

  602. with his

  603. resurrection?

  604. I think it

  605. depends on

  606. what coming

  607. in his

  608. kingdom

  609. means.

  610. And kingdom

  611. is about

  612. Christ

  613. exercising

  614. his rule.

  615. So I

  616. think the

  617. promise

  618. is likely

  619. referring to

  620. every way

  621. that the

  622. risen Christ

  623. is exercising

  624. his rule.

  625. And I

  626. think the

  627. transfiguration

  628. is just a

  629. little

  630. foretaste,

  631. a little

  632. window into

  633. heaven of

  634. who he

  635. is right

  636. now.

  637. He is at

  638. the Father's

  639. hand.

  640. With the

  641. eyes of

  642. faith for us

  643. today, if we

  644. take the

  645. apostles'

  646. word for

  647. what they

  648. saw,

  649. especially

  650. that he

  651. is risen,

  652. that he

  653. is God's

  654. king,

  655. this

  656. testimony

  657. that they

  658. gladly laid

  659. down their

  660. lives for,

  661. with the

  662. eyes of

  663. faith, we

  664. can see

  665. him reigning

  666. now.

  667. If you

  668. try and

  669. see Christ

  670. reigning

  671. only in the

  672. good things

  673. of life,

  674. so all

  675. the pleasures

  676. and health

  677. and

  678. all the

  679. relationships,

  680. if you

  681. try and

  682. see Jesus

  683. reigning in

  684. only the

  685. good things

  686. but not

  687. the bad

  688. things,

  689. the sin

  690. and sickness

  691. and shame

  692. and death,

  693. because of a

  694. warped idea

  695. of what Christ

  696. came to

  697. remove in

  698. this life,

  699. he came to

  700. remove,

  701. remember that

  702. self-rule,

  703. that's what he

  704. came to

  705. remove.

  706. All those

  707. things are

  708. going to be

  709. removed later,

  710. but we've

  711. got to get

  712. his mission

  713. right,

  714. we've got to

  715. think of it

  716. right,

  717. because if we

  718. have a warped

  719. view of his

  720. mission,

  721. we will

  722. struggle to

  723. see his

  724. glory,

  725. like,

  726. is following

  727. Christ,

  728. is he really

  729. that glorious?

  730. If there's so

  731. much hardship

  732. and things

  733. not going

  734. well.

  735. But if we

  736. see this

  737. suffering in

  738. our risen

  739. Christ,

  740. if we

  741. understand his

  742. mission is

  743. to deliver

  744. people from

  745. the hell-bent

  746. allegiance to

  747. self in this

  748. world, then

  749. I think we

  750. can see

  751. tastes of

  752. his power

  753. at work

  754. in the

  755. transformed

  756. lives of

  757. his people,

  758. who people

  759. compelled by

  760. his love

  761. actually answer

  762. the call to

  763. come and die

  764. to self and

  765. live for him.

  766. We can see

  767. his power

  768. at work,

  769. his kingdom

  770. is coming,

  771. we can see

  772. it in this

  773. room.

  774. We can see

  775. him reigning

  776. now because

  777. when people

  778. who once

  779. boasted in

  780. their

  781. accomplishments,

  782. they now

  783. boast in

  784. their weakness

  785. and they say

  786. that anything

  787. they can do

  788. is Christ

  789. through them.

  790. What is

  791. that change?

  792. That's the

  793. kingdom

  794. coming.

  795. We see

  796. him reigning

  797. now when

  798. people who

  799. just dive

  800. headlong

  801. into the

  802. sinful pleasures

  803. of this

  804. world just

  805. go,

  806. I want to

  807. cut off

  808. my hand,

  809. I want to

  810. pluck out

  811. my eye

  812. because I

  813. found something

  814. better and

  815. more joyful

  816. and this is

  817. getting in the

  818. way of that.

  819. What is

  820. that change?

  821. It's the

  822. kingdom

  823. coming.

  824. It's

  825. Christ

  826. ruling the

  827. heart.

  828. Christ.

  829. I think

  830. we see

  831. his kingdom

  832. reigning

  833. in people

  834. when people

  835. who once

  836. were bitter

  837. and demanding

  838. justice from

  839. those who

  840. wronged them

  841. now devote

  842. themselves to

  843. reconciliation

  844. and they

  845. want to

  846. give mercy.

  847. Not just

  848. have to,

  849. they want

  850. to because

  851. they've

  852. received so

  853. much mercy

  854. themselves.

  855. What is

  856. that change?

  857. it's the

  858. love of

  859. Christ

  860. compelling

  861. a person.

  862. It's

  863. ruling the

  864. heart.

  865. When people

  866. once clinging

  867. to house

  868. and family

  869. and land

  870. as their

  871. life,

  872. give it

  873. up.

  874. Hold it

  875. loosely.

  876. Use it

  877. all for

  878. his sake

  879. and for

  880. the gospel.

  881. We can

  882. see him

  883. reigning.

  884. When people

  885. who once

  886. counted

  887. greatness

  888. as rising

  889. above others

  890. now see

  891. greatness

  892. as having

  893. faith like

  894. a child

  895. and being

  896. the servant

  897. of all

  898. others,

  899. that's

  900. greatness

  901. to serve.

  902. What is

  903. that change?

  904. It's

  905. Christ reigning

  906. over the

  907. hearts of

  908. people.

  909. When people

  910. who once

  911. faced their

  912. death as

  913. losing their

  914. whole life

  915. can now

  916. face the

  917. loss of

  918. all things

  919. and all

  920. they're getting

  921. in return

  922. is Christ

  923. and they

  924. count it

  925. I'm

  926. gaining.

  927. That's

  928. him

  929. reigning

  930. now.

  931. The

  932. kingdom

  933. is coming.

  934. So this

  935. call to

  936. follow

  937. Christ's

  938. path to

  939. glory,

  940. it must

  941. sound

  942. incomprehensible

  943. to our

  944. culture at

  945. the moment

  946. where pain

  947. is to be

  948. avoided at

  949. all costs

  950. and you

  951. depend on

  952. people's

  953. affirmation of

  954. my thinking

  955. and feelings

  956. and choices.

  957. This just

  958. must be,

  959. it must seem

  960. the opposite

  961. to life.

  962. love.

  963. But if you

  964. confess this

  965. suffering

  966. Christ,

  967. what

  968. ought to

  969. compel you

  970. to have

  971. allegiance to

  972. him and

  973. renounce

  974. self isn't

  975. to try and

  976. pay him

  977. back for

  978. his death

  979. for you,

  980. it's not

  981. to try and

  982. pay him

  983. back,

  984. it's not

  985. to try and

  986. shore up

  987. your

  988. salvation,

  989. it's rock

  990. solid,

  991. you can't

  992. shore up

  993. your

  994. salvation.

  995. It's

  996. the love

  997. of Christ,

  998. a crucified

  999. Christ that

  1000. compels us.

  1001. I think we

  1002. grow in our

  1003. love for

  1004. what he has

  1005. done for us

  1006. when we

  1007. acknowledge the

  1008. fact that we

  1009. are in love

  1010. with self.

  1011. I am in

  1012. love with

  1013. this world

  1014. and he

  1015. still chose

  1016. to die

  1017. to free me

  1018. from that,

  1019. to actually

  1020. give me

  1021. life.

  1022. What compels

  1023. us is

  1024. his love

  1025. for us,

  1026. to make

  1027. it a

  1028. choice to

  1029. deny self

  1030. and take

  1031. up cross

  1032. and follow

  1033. him.

  1034. I think

  1035. the last

  1036. stanza of

  1037. one of

  1038. William

  1039. Cowper's

  1040. poems,

  1041. now this

  1042. guy,

  1043. he wrestled

  1044. with deep

  1045. bouts of

  1046. depression

  1047. his whole

  1048. life.

  1049. Talk about

  1050. weakness,

  1051. severe

  1052. depression.

  1053. most of

  1054. his life

  1055. and yet

  1056. he produced

  1057. some of

  1058. the most

  1059. powerful

  1060. poems

  1061. of

  1062. Christian

  1063. literature.

  1064. I think

  1065. this last

  1066. stanza

  1067. sums it

  1068. up.

  1069. To see

  1070. the law

  1071. by Christ

  1072. fulfilled

  1073. and hear

  1074. his

  1075. pardoning

  1076. voice

  1077. changes

  1078. a slave

  1079. into a

  1080. child

  1081. and

  1082. duty

  1083. into

  1084. choice.

  1085. If we

  1086. believe

  1087. he is

  1088. glorious

  1089. not just

  1090. because

  1091. he's not

  1092. suffering

  1093. anymore

  1094. but

  1095. precisely

  1096. because

  1097. he chose

  1098. to suffer,

  1099. if he's

  1100. glorious

  1101. because he

  1102. laid down

  1103. his life,

  1104. we'll want

  1105. to imitate

  1106. him because

  1107. we believe

  1108. it's

  1109. glorious.

  1110. We will

  1111. count it

  1112. such a

  1113. high honour

  1114. to join

  1115. him on

  1116. his

  1117. mission.

  1118. Doing

  1119. our part

  1120. to get

  1121. the word

  1122. out about

  1123. this

  1124. crucified

  1125. Christ

  1126. and living

  1127. a cross

  1128. shaped

  1129. life so

  1130. that people

  1131. can see

  1132. the hope

  1133. that we

  1134. have.

  1135. So his

  1136. mission,

  1137. it wasn't

  1138. to die

  1139. for a

  1140. superficial

  1141. level

  1142. of sin

  1143. to change

  1144. behaviours

  1145. so that

  1146. he might

  1147. become

  1148. first on

  1149. our

  1150. agenda.

  1151. He doesn't

  1152. want to

  1153. be first

  1154. on our

  1155. agenda.

  1156. His

  1157. mission

  1158. was to

  1159. die for

  1160. our allegiance

  1161. to self

  1162. in this

  1163. world so

  1164. that he

  1165. sets us

  1166. a totally

  1167. new

  1168. agenda.

  1169. He gives

  1170. us the

  1171. promise,

  1172. whoever

  1173. loses

  1174. their life

  1175. for my

  1176. sake

  1177. will find

  1178. it.

  1179. So I'll

  1180. leave that

  1181. challenge

  1182. with you.

  1183. Why don't

  1184. we pray?

  1185. Let's pray.

  1186. Lord,

  1187. even as

  1188. I preach

  1189. these words,

  1190. I know

  1191. how much

  1192. my own

  1193. heart is

  1194. still,

  1195. well,

  1196. I know

  1197. a little

  1198. bit of

  1199. how much

  1200. my own

  1201. heart

  1202. still

  1203. revolves

  1204. around

  1205. self

  1206. and

  1207. looks at

  1208. life in

  1209. worldly

  1210. terms.

  1211. And so

  1212. I thank

  1213. you for

  1214. moving

  1215. towards us

  1216. and laying

  1217. down your

  1218. life to

  1219. free us

  1220. from the

  1221. love of

  1222. self so

  1223. that we

  1224. might know

  1225. the depths

  1226. of your

  1227. love for

  1228. us.

  1229. Lord,

  1230. I pray

  1231. that you

  1232. would help

  1233. us as

  1234. your people

  1235. to have

  1236. an eternal

  1237. perspective.

  1238. Help us

  1239. to count

  1240. it a joy

  1241. to share

  1242. your cross,

  1243. not in

  1244. saving

  1245. ourselves,

  1246. but sharing

  1247. it in

  1248. showing

  1249. people

  1250. that life

  1251. isn't found

  1252. in self

  1253. and the

  1254. world,

  1255. but is

  1256. found in

  1257. you.

  1258. So

  1259. Lord,

  1260. convince

  1261. our

  1262. hearts.

  1263. I know

  1264. that my

  1265. words

  1266. have no

  1267. power,

  1268. but your

  1269. words have

  1270. all the

  1271. power.

  1272. So convince

  1273. us.

  1274. And Lord,

  1275. if there's

  1276. anyone who

  1277. isn't sure

  1278. where they

  1279. stand with

  1280. you,

  1281. I pray

  1282. that you

  1283. would call

  1284. them,

  1285. call them

  1286. to yourself

  1287. to come

  1288. and die

  1289. and be

  1290. raised to

  1291. a life

  1292. that you've

  1293. never known,

  1294. full of

  1295. glory.

  1296. In Jesus'

  1297. name,

  1298. Amen.
