  1. Now, the scripture reading this morning, which covers that episode that we were just hearing about, is Matthew 17, verses 1-13.

    Matthew 17:1–13

  2. If you're like me, retention is enhanced if the eye gate is engaged, as well as the ear gate, so I hope you'll read along with me.

  3. Matthew 17, verses 1-13.

    Matthew 17:1–13

  4. And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

  5. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

  6. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

  7. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good that we are here.

  8. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

  9. He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said,

  10. This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.

  11. Listen to him.

  12. When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

  13. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise and have no fear.

  14. And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

  15. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them,

  16. Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.

  17. And the disciples asked him, Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?

  18. He answered, Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.

  19. But I tell you that Elijah has already come.

  20. And they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased.

  21. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.

  22. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

  23. This is the word of the Lord.

  24. Amen.

  25. Good morning, everyone.

  26. My name is Dave.

  27. I'm one of the pastors, if I haven't met you before.

  28. A kind of cold, but hopefully warm welcome to you.

  29. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Lord, coming out of another week, or going into another one as well,

  32. I'm assuming that we're all coming from different places,

  33. from living in a broken world.

  34. Lord, some of us will just be weighed down with a sense of guilt and failure.

  35. Others will just be overwhelmed, not sure what's going on.

  36. Lord, others will be just so in love with something in this world

  37. that even as we come to your word, not expecting to get anything out of it.

  38. Lord, some of us, our sight of Jesus has grown cold.

  39. For some of us, we're just feeling shame.

  40. Lord, please speak to each one of us.

  41. Send your Holy Spirit to speak through your word

  42. so that we might see the Lord Jesus as our life.

  43. In his name I pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. Well, a friend once asked me what my favourite song about heaven was.

  46. And the song that came to my mind was I Know by King's Kaleidoscope.

  47. I don't know if you know it.

  48. I'll read a bit of the lyrics.

  49. I won't sing it to you.

  50. I've been given a taste for something that nothing in this world can satisfy.

  51. But I know that a time is coming when I will be in glorious delight.

  52. I know I will run through heaven's streets of gold shouting hallelujah, Christ alone.

  53. I know I will dance and sing and bow before the throne.

  54. This, yeah, this I know.

  55. Oh.

  56. Oh.

  57. Oh.

  58. But how do I know?

  59. How can you know?

  60. Especially when life is just not working out how you hoped for,

  61. which I'm assuming that's all of us in this room.

  62. How can you know when the anxious thoughts aren't taken away,

  63. no matter how much you pray?

  64. How can you know you're going to be in glorious delight one day?

  65. When you gradually lose all things in your older years,

  66. how can you know when you're surrounded by that kind of sense of darkness,

  67. when you commit the same sin this week as you did last week?

  68. How can we know when others who don't follow Jesus seem happier and healthier,

  69. when you try and speak Jesus' truth out of love into people's heart,

  70. but then the ones you love distance themselves from you because you're trying to do that.

  71. It seems far from glorious.

  72. How can we know that one day we're going to be dancing and singing

  73. and bowing before the throne?

  74. I think this passage we're coming to, what we call the transfiguration,

  75. is just one gracious, God-given reason to help us know.

  76. Someone described this passage as like the whole gospel in a microcosm,

  77. so I feel a bit intimidated by that.

  78. We can't unpack everything here.

  79. There's just so much in here.

  80. But amidst the darkness of living in a sinful world,

  81. we are given this glimpse into heaven.

  82. I think first, we can have no doubt about who Jesus is.

  83. And second, we see that we can know that suffering is God's appointed pathway to glory.

  84. We can have no doubt about who Jesus is.

  85. And we can know that this is the pathway to glory.

  86. So let's get into the story.

  87. It's really uncommon in the Gospels to find a specific time reference.

  88. So six days later in verse 1.

  89. So six days after he has been confessed to be the Christ,

  90. after he has made plain his plan to suffer and die,

  91. and after he has called all who would follow him to die to self and die to the world,

  92. we're given this six days later.

  93. These are dark days.

  94. There's been wonderful things that have happened in the past three years of his ministry,

  95. all the healing and everything that has happened.

  96. But he's now talking about his death.

  97. He's now saying you need to die to self and the world.

  98. There's a lot of gloom.

  99. These are the last few weeks of his life.

  100. But for a brief moment, we get to look into his nature before he entered this world.

  101. For a brief moment, we get to see what Jesus is like this very moment in heaven.

  102. For a brief moment, we get a glimpse of what all people are going to see one day when he returns,

  103. when every knee will bow when they see him like this.

  104. They will confess he is Lord.

  105. We get this glimpse.

  106. You don't need to wait for a dream or a vision by the Holy Spirit to see into heaven

  107. if you realise that this is recorded for you.

  108. This is recorded for our sake.

  109. So Jesus takes with him Peter, James and John up a high mountain.

  110. These three were something of the inner circle of the twelve,

  111. but I first wondered why only three?

  112. Why not the rest of the disciples?

  113. But I think a better question is, why did he take anyone with him at all?

  114. There's other really significant events that happened to Jesus that no one was with him for,

  115. and the Holy Spirit records it for us, like his temptation in the wilderness,

  116. or him praying in the Garden of Gethsemane when the disciples are asleep.

  117. Why did he take three with him?

  118. I think he took three.

  119. The fact that he takes three of the disciples with him suggests that what happens here isn't primarily for his sake.

  120. He didn't need confirmation.

  121. It's primarily for their sake and for our sake, reading the Gospel today.

  122. There are plenty of people who claim to have had visions of heaven,

  123. but the problem with that is Scripture tells us the adversary, Satan can appear as an angel of light.

  124. Can you really trust that, what one person says?

  125. Can you even trust your own experience?

  126. You've got to test it with a grain of salt, according to Scripture.

  127. But here we have three witnesses.

  128. This isn't happening in their minds.

  129. Three witnesses are saying,

  130. this is what happened.

  131. This phenomenon happened.

  132. The word vision is used in verse 9,

  133. but that doesn't mean that this was some out-of-body experience.

  134. That word vision can just mean what they saw with their eyes.

  135. Here we can have three eyewitnesses saying,

  136. this happened.

  137. You can have confidence in this.

  138. He was transfigured before them,

  139. and his face shone like the sun,

  140. and his clothes became white as light.

  141. How are you going to make sense of that?

  142. Where does that fit in your categories of reality?

  143. When we say a lady is,

  144. a girl is glowing and radiant,

  145. we are not meaning that we're scared

  146. that if we keep looking,

  147. our retinas are going to be burnt.

  148. We're not meaning that.

  149. But they are.

  150. I just had a go.

  151. Preparing this week,

  152. I just had a go.

  153. I'm not encouraging this,

  154. especially children,

  155. but I had a go at staring at the sun for a second.

  156. One second, I was like,

  157. no, I'm out.

  158. I don't want to go blind.

  159. His face shone like the sun.

  160. What is that?

  161. Where are you going to fit that in your category of Jesus,

  162. of reality?

  163. I think there could be two barriers to knowing what to do with this.

  164. I think one barrier is to make a joke of it,

  165. like the memes,

  166. and people say,

  167. like, oh, who does his laundry?

  168. That's a pretty poor joke.

  169. Thanks, Matt.

  170. But why make a joke about this?

  171. I wonder if it's very similar to why we call the top student in our class a nerd.

  172. Like, oh, we try and make fun of them.

  173. I think because they're a threat.

  174. Because their brilliance shines on our inadequacy,

  175. and they're a threat.

  176. So I think if you make a joke about this,

  177. really,

  178. it's just you're trying to avoid the threat of what is going on here.

  179. Can I encourage you?

  180. Don't do that.

  181. Just take a look.

  182. Take a long, hard look.

  183. The second barrier may be simply we don't know the Old Testament imagery

  184. that is just packed into this passage.

  185. And maybe we don't want to know,

  186. because it is threatening,

  187. but maybe we just don't know.

  188. That could be another barrier.

  189. Because when the Israelites were set free from Egypt,

  190. the Lord travelled with them in a bright cloud,

  191. the glory cloud,

  192. that looked like a cloud by day,

  193. but fire by night.

  194. And this cloud destroyed Egypt's army.

  195. When they arrived at Mount Sinai,

  196. when this cloud descended on the mountain,

  197. it turned into like a volcano,

  198. and it was shaking,

  199. and no one was to go up that mountain.

  200. If they did,

  201. God would break out against them.

  202. Even Moses said,

  203. let me have a look.

  204. And God says,

  205. no,

  206. you will die.

  207. He only saw the back of God,

  208. and he came back glowing,

  209. his face glowing,

  210. which dimmed over time.

  211. Something like the moon reflecting the light.

  212. Then we've also got the prophet Elijah.

  213. In 1 Kings 19,

  214. he had an encounter with God up on Mount Horeb.

  215. He heard powerful phenomena,

  216. and heard his voice,

  217. and here we are going up a high mountain again

  218. with these two men who encountered God.

  219. Here we have the bright cloud,

  220. the glory cloud,

  221. that produces terror when you hear his voice.

  222. But what's different?

  223. What's different here to Moses and Elijah's day?

  224. The divine splendour

  225. is now radiating out of a person.

  226. The Apostle Paul met this same blinding light

  227. during the middle of the day.

  228. He was blinded by it when Jesus showed himself.

  229. Psalm 104 says,

  230. you are clothed with splendour and majesty,

  231. covering yourself with light

  232. as with a garment.

  233. This guy bursts any category of angel.

  234. He bursts any category of prophet.

  235. What we see here is what Hebrews 1

  236. puts in a statement form.

  237. He is the radiance of the glory of God.

  238. The exact imprint of his nature.

  239. He is not like a Moses and Elijah

  240. who point to ultimate reality.

  241. He is ultimate reality.

  242. I found what historian N.T. Wright said,

  243. I found it helpful.

  244. How can you live with the terrifying thought

  245. that the hurricane has become human,

  246. that fire has become flesh,

  247. that life, capital L, life itself,

  248. became life and walked in our midst?

  249. Christianity either means that

  250. or it means nothing.

  251. It is either the most devastating disclosure

  252. of the deepest reality of the world

  253. or it is a sham, a nonsense,

  254. a bit of deceitful play acting.

  255. Most of us, unable to cope with saying

  256. either of those things,

  257. condemn ourselves to live in the shadow world

  258. in between.

  259. How are you going to make sense of this Jesus?

  260. Why is it so threatening?

  261. I think it's threatening because it displaces self

  262. or anything else from the centre of your world,

  263. of my world.

  264. To know him, to live for him

  265. is what life is all about.

  266. He's a threat because he displaces self and the world.

  267. I think he's also a threat because

  268. it exposes any impurity in us.

  269. And Peter, true to form,

  270. puts his foot in his mouth

  271. just to demonstrate for us.

  272. But verse 4,

  273. he offers to build three tents,

  274. three tabernacles can be the word.

  275. One for Jesus, Moses and Elijah.

  276. And he might be thinking of the Jewish Feast of Booths,

  277. which was to remember the wilderness period

  278. before getting to the Promised Land.

  279. And so that was,

  280. to live in tents was to look forward

  281. to the kingdom coming.

  282. So his offer to build tents was actually,

  283. it wasn't a bad one.

  284. It's not what he said

  285. in terms of building tents

  286. that he was rebuked for.

  287. Mark's Gospel adds an interesting detail.

  288. Peter said this because he did not know what to say

  289. for they were terrified.

  290. They were terrified of the glory

  291. that they saw in this Jesus.

  292. And do you remember what the tabernacle was for?

  293. What was the temple for?

  294. It was so that God could live with his people,

  295. but not too close.

  296. You had to keep distance from this holy God.

  297. Otherwise, he will break out and consume sinful people.

  298. Now, that might sound a bit yuck and offensive

  299. that God would,

  300. that such brilliance would kill sinful people,

  301. but just like staring into the sun.

  302. Like, my physical eyes just can't cope

  303. with the brilliance of that.

  304. So too spiritually,

  305. we were made to be in God's presence.

  306. We were made for that,

  307. to be able to handle it.

  308. But because of our sinful nature,

  309. because of our sin,

  310. we just can't cope.

  311. The good news is that Jesus has come

  312. so that we can cope again,

  313. to restore us.

  314. So Peter's saying,

  315. let's build three tents,

  316. three tabernacles.

  317. I think what he's saying is,

  318. we want to stay and enjoy this,

  319. but we need protection.

  320. We need a bit of a barrier here.

  321. There's too much glory for us to handle.

  322. And if they felt unworthy

  323. seeing Jesus' face shine like the sun,

  324. they must have been terrified

  325. when that cloud came towards them.

  326. Like, they're with Moses and Elijah.

  327. They would know what,

  328. I assume they knew who was coming.

  329. And then they hear God's voice

  330. and they fell on their faces,

  331. filled with terror.

  332. Stop speaking, Peter.

  333. You think you're being respectful,

  334. but you're uttering blasphemy

  335. to put Jesus alongside Moses and Elijah.

  336. This is my beloved son,

  337. with whom I am well pleased.

  338. Listen to him.

  339. And then they only saw Jesus.

  340. His error was to try and reduce Jesus

  341. to lawgiver or prophet.

  342. No.

  343. They were servants.

  344. He is the son of God.

  345. They experienced the glory of God.

  346. He is the glory of God.

  347. So how did these finite,

  348. sinful disciples survive this encounter with God?

  349. I think we get a little glimpse of it

  350. with Jesus coming and touching

  351. and restoring them

  352. and offering them a word of peace.

  353. I think the opening to John's gospel

  354. helps us understand

  355. from his fullness

  356. we have all received grace upon grace.

  357. For the law was given through Moses,

  358. but grace and truth

  359. came through Jesus Christ.

  360. A better mediator than Moses is here.

  361. A better mediator.

  362. One who in his own being

  363. combines God and man.

  364. A better mediator than the law.

  365. Because when the law comes close to you,

  366. it exposes all the ways

  367. that I've broken the law.

  368. It condemns.

  369. But this mediator,

  370. when he comes close,

  371. we're terrified of him getting close.

  372. But what we find,

  373. if we let him,

  374. is he says,

  375. have no fear.

  376. Rise,

  377. have no fear.

  378. You're in the presence of God.

  379. Have no fear.

  380. How is that possible?

  381. You are accepted.

  382. It's possible because of what his mission is.

  383. The father's soul delights in his son

  384. and that includes his son's mission

  385. so that you and I can have no fear

  386. in the presence of God.

  387. And that brings us to

  388. verses 9 to 13,

  389. which

  390. I'm not sure I fully understand it.

  391. I'm going to admit that.

  392. I don't know.

  393. I think overall,

  394. we can understand what's going on.

  395. But they're complex verses.

  396. These disciples have no doubt

  397. of who Jesus is.

  398. But what is clear,

  399. they can't comprehend yet

  400. how God's pathway to glory

  401. includes suffering.

  402. So on the way back down the mountain,

  403. the lights have gone off,

  404. so to speak.

  405. They're entering the gloom again.

  406. Jesus again talks about his death.

  407. Now how much they understood about Elijah,

  408. I'm not sure.

  409. But

  410. Jesus answers the deeper question.

  411. Even if they weren't asking the deep question,

  412. he answers the question,

  413. at least they should have been asking.

  414. Because the last thing we read

  415. in the Old Testament

  416. is a promise that Elijah will come

  417. and restore all things.

  418. He will turn the hearts back.

  419. Whereas the first Elijah

  420. who was sent,

  421. even though he was

  422. an awesome prophet,

  423. Israel didn't turn

  424. from idolatry

  425. to serve God again.

  426. Now there was some,

  427. there was a remnant who did,

  428. but overall

  429. it was a failure.

  430. But the last promise we get

  431. in the Old Testament is

  432. when Elijah comes,

  433. he will restore all things.

  434. So the question is,

  435. how,

  436. if all Israel

  437. are restored back to God,

  438. how could then

  439. people

  440. cause God's king

  441. to suffer?

  442. If they're worshipping God,

  443. how could they reject his king?

  444. I think,

  445. stepping back,

  446. they're kind of asking,

  447. how can success

  448. and suffering

  449. go together?

  450. They seem mutually exclusive.

  451. So,

  452. trying to paraphrase

  453. Jesus' answer,

  454. yes,

  455. Elijah comes first,

  456. John the Baptist.

  457. And yes,

  458. his mission

  459. was a success.

  460. People did repent.

  461. But,

  462. just like the prophets

  463. of old,

  464. God's will

  465. was for his mission

  466. not to

  467. avoid

  468. suffering and rejection,

  469. his mission

  470. was accomplished

  471. in the midst of,

  472. even because of

  473. suffering and rejection.

  474. So you should think

  475. of my mission.

  476. Don't think success

  477. and suffering

  478. can't go together.

  479. It is God's

  480. appointed pathway

  481. to glory.

  482. If we compare

  483. how people

  484. in this world

  485. see suffering

  486. to success

  487. to what

  488. God does,

  489. we have totally

  490. different two

  491. points of view.

  492. In the play,

  493. Jesus Christ Superstar,

  494. apparently,

  495. I haven't seen it,

  496. but I've heard

  497. this is the case.

  498. I watched the little

  499. clip on YouTube

  500. for this scene

  501. and when Jesus

  502. comes to Pilate,

  503. Pilate says

  504. these words,

  505. who is this

  506. broken man

  507. cluttering up

  508. my hallways.

  509. So this is

  510. Jesus Christ.

  511. I'm really

  512. quite surprised.

  513. You look so small.

  514. Not a king at all.

  515. It's powerful.

  516. You look so small.

  517. You're not a king at all.

  518. I've got the power

  519. to crucify.

  520. That's how the world

  521. sees suffering

  522. and success.

  523. But when the

  524. father looks at

  525. his son

  526. choosing to go

  527. to the cross,

  528. he is pleased

  529. with his son.

  530. It's not in spite

  531. of suffering.

  532. It's because

  533. he chose to suffer

  534. that his mission

  535. is his success.

  536. I think the big

  537. point we should

  538. take away from this

  539. is we can be

  540. sure that God's

  541. appointed pathway

  542. to glory

  543. is through

  544. suffering.

  545. It's always

  546. been the case

  547. for the prophets

  548. before.

  549. Our life depends

  550. on the fact

  551. that Jesus

  552. died for us

  553. and his call

  554. for us to follow

  555. him and take up

  556. our cross,

  557. we should be

  558. sure it really

  559. is the pathway

  560. to glory.

  561. So how

  562. should we

  563. respond to

  564. what we've

  565. seen in this

  566. event?

  567. I'm going to

  568. suggest three

  569. ways.

  570. First,

  571. we should

  572. marvel at his

  573. self-humiliation

  574. for your sake.

  575. Like for a

  576. brief moment,

  577. we see

  578. who he is,

  579. like his

  580. nature,

  581. his face

  582. shone like

  583. the sun.

  584. Not only

  585. does he

  586. become an

  587. ordinary human

  588. being,

  589. not only

  590. does he

  591. associate with

  592. nobodies and

  593. sinful people,

  594. he became so

  595. small,

  596. not a king

  597. at all.

  598. The light

  599. was extinguished

  600. for our

  601. sake,

  602. so that he

  603. could say to

  604. us,

  605. rise and have

  606. no fear.

  607. I've dealt

  608. with your

  609. sin,

  610. I've dealt

  611. with your

  612. impurity.

  613. You don't

  614. have to be

  615. afraid of

  616. God.

  617. You can

  618. have full

  619. access to

  620. him and

  621. have joy

  622. in his

  623. presence,

  624. no fear,

  625. all because

  626. this blazing

  627. sun emptied

  628. himself.

  629. even though

  630. we once

  631. loved the

  632. darkness,

  633. this

  634. son of

  635. God

  636. gave it

  637. all up

  638. so that

  639. he could

  640. unite us

  641. to himself.

  642. This is

  643. something I've

  644. been blown

  645. away with.

  646. We're told

  647. elsewhere in

  648. scripture,

  649. we're united

  650. to Jesus

  651. closer than

  652. marriage,

  653. closer than

  654. one body.

  655. this is the

  656. Jesus we're

  657. united to.

  658. I can't

  659. quite get my

  660. head around

  661. that.

  662. He lost

  663. it all to

  664. bring us

  665. that far

  666. into glory.

  667. He's already

  668. told us in

  669. Matthew 13,

  670. the parable

  671. of the

  672. wheat and

  673. the chaff,

  674. is it?

  675. That sounds

  676. right.

  677. The end of

  678. that parable

  679. is when the

  680. kingdom comes,

  681. the righteous

  682. will shine

  683. like the

  684. sun.

  685. That's

  686. incredible.

  687. We're going

  688. to share

  689. in this

  690. glory.

  691. So the

  692. first thing

  693. is we

  694. need to

  695. marvel at

  696. his self

  697. humiliation

  698. for our

  699. sake.

  700. And if

  701. we marvel

  702. at him,

  703. if we see

  704. that he is

  705. ultimate

  706. reality,

  707. he is

  708. life,

  709. capital

  710. L

  711. life,

  712. then we

  713. must listen

  714. to him

  715. to find

  716. life,

  717. to obey

  718. him.

  719. Listen

  720. also means

  721. obey.

  722. To obey

  723. him is

  724. always

  725. choosing

  726. life.

  727. You

  728. never have

  729. to choose

  730. between

  731. life and

  732. following

  733. Jesus.

  734. They're the

  735. same choice.

  736. In

  737. comparison

  738. to his

  739. light,

  740. everything

  741. else is

  742. just like

  743. tinsel in

  744. Christmas.

  745. We think

  746. it's gold.

  747. It's not.

  748. Look at

  749. his light.

  750. Now,

  751. it doesn't

  752. feel that

  753. way,

  754. does it?

  755. It doesn't

  756. feel that

  757. way when

  758. we just

  759. don't want

  760. to let

  761. go of

  762. what we

  763. know Jesus

  764. is calling

  765. us to.

  766. It doesn't

  767. feel like

  768. that.

  769. But looking

  770. at him,

  771. we should

  772. trust that

  773. choosing to

  774. listen to

  775. him is

  776. always

  777. choosing

  778. life.

  779. And so

  780. I suggest

  781. invite him

  782. in.

  783. Where don't

  784. you want

  785. him to

  786. speak

  787. into?

  788. Where's

  789. the last

  790. place you

  791. would want

  792. him to

  793. speak

  794. into?

  795. Why don't

  796. you go

  797. command me?

  798. Because I

  799. know what

  800. you say is

  801. life.

  802. So we

  803. should marvel

  804. at his

  805. self-humiliation.

  806. We should

  807. listen to him

  808. because it's

  809. always choosing

  810. the path to

  811. glory.

  812. It's always

  813. choosing life.

  814. And finally,

  815. I think we

  816. ought to

  817. trust that

  818. when we

  819. follow him,

  820. no matter

  821. how dark

  822. it is,

  823. glory is

  824. at work.

  825. Not giving

  826. up the

  827. struggle with

  828. our sins,

  829. even with

  830. sickness and

  831. anxious thoughts

  832. aren't taken

  833. away.

  834. When the

  835. relational cost

  836. of following

  837. Jesus is

  838. real and

  839. high,

  840. it will

  841. feel very

  842. dark.

  843. work,

  844. but we

  845. can be

  846. sure it's

  847. the pathway

  848. to glory.

  849. Glory is

  850. at work.

  851. In us,

  852. but also

  853. more than

  854. just in

  855. us.

  856. If he

  857. is our

  858. life,

  859. if he is

  860. our joy,

  861. then we

  862. want others

  863. to see his

  864. life through

  865. us.

  866. And some

  867. of the best

  868. opportunities to

  869. do that is

  870. when we're

  871. in the

  872. darkness.

  873. And people

  874. say,

  875. what is

  876. the hope

  877. that you

  878. have?

  879. So amidst

  880. the darkness,

  881. here in this

  882. passage, we've

  883. been given

  884. this glimpse

  885. of heaven.

  886. I've been

  887. given a

  888. taste for

  889. something that

  890. nothing in

  891. this world

  892. can satisfy.

  893. But I

  894. know,

  895. I know

  896. that a time

  897. is coming

  898. when I will

  899. be in

  900. glorious

  901. delight.

  902. let's

  903. marvel at

  904. his

  905. self-humiliation.

  906. Let's

  907. listen to

  908. him because

  909. it's always

  910. choosing life

  911. and let's

  912. trust him

  913. that as

  914. painful as

  915. it is,

  916. glory is at

  917. work in

  918. us and

  919. through us

  920. to bring

  921. others into

  922. the life of

  923. knowing him.

  924. Let's pray.

  925. Lord, in

  926. the splendour of

  927. how you've

  928. shown yourself

  929. in your

  930. word today,

  931. I pray

  932. particularly for

  933. those who

  934. are really

  935. afraid that

  936. their sin is

  937. too great and

  938. too constant

  939. to really have

  940. no fear in

  941. your presence.

  942. I pray that

  943. your word

  944. would pierce

  945. through that

  946. and reassure

  947. that you

  948. really have

  949. paid it all

  950. and that

  951. we can

  952. call on you

  953. as father.

  954. Lord, give

  955. that deep

  956. assurance so

  957. that we

  958. can let

  959. go of

  960. what we

  961. cling to

  962. so much

  963. in this

  964. world so

  965. that others

  966. might see

  967. the light

  968. that we

  969. have through

  970. us.

  971. I pray

  972. this in

  973. Jesus'

  974. name.

  975. Amen.

  976. Amen.
