  1. We'll now be reading from Matthew chapter 17, and we'll be starting at verse 14.

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  2. And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him, and kneeling before him said,

  3. Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly.

  4. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.

  5. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.

  6. And Jesus answered, O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you?

  7. How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.

  8. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly.

  9. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why could we not cast it out?

  10. He said to them, Because of your little faith.

  11. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  12. you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move,

  13. and nothing will be impossible for you.

  14. As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them,

  15. The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,

  16. and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.

  17. And they were greatly distressed.

  18. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two drachma tax went up to Peter and said,

  19. Does your teacher not pay the tax?

  20. He said, Yes.

  21. And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying,

  22. What do you think, Simon?

  23. From whom do kings of the earth take their toll, or tax?

  24. From their sons, or from others?

  25. And when he said, From others, Jesus said to him,

  26. Then the sons are free.

  27. However, not to give offence to them, go to the sea and cast a hook,

  28. and take the first fish that comes up,

  29. and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel.

  30. Take that and give it to them, for me and for yourself.

  31. Well, my name's Dave.

  32. I'm one of the pastors here.

  33. A warm welcome to you if you're visiting this morning.

  34. Well, I would love to have a manual for parenting.

  35. A recipe.

  36. I'm pretty hopeless at cooking.

  37. I need Emma to give me, like, a step-by-step instruction on what to do.

  38. Just a recipe for parenting would be wonderful.

  39. How and when to discipline.

  40. Oh, gee, that's tough to work out.

  41. Like, we're coming up with seeing, like, private schooling, public schooling,

  42. home schooling.

  43. Like, that's just a confusing question.

  44. To know exactly what to do in every moment.

  45. How to respond.

  46. To ensure that my children will grow up as whole persons knowing the Lord.

  47. I want a recipe.

  48. I'd love a recipe for lots of things.

  49. Like, what on earth am I meant to do as a pastor and say to people?

  50. What am I meant to do?

  51. I'd love a recipe for this sermon, to be honest with you.

  52. I want a recipe.

  53. Just give me a step-by-step instructions to follow.

  54. There's a more obvious form of living the Christian life based on a recipe.

  55. And I came across it again this week watching the recent SBS documentary,

  56. The Kingdom.

  57. I don't know if you've seen it yet.

  58. A guy named Dave is interviewed after being burnt by the church.

  59. And he says this.

  60. All the things that people promised would happen, a great life, happiness,

  61. great relationships, being quote-unquote blessed, owning a house,

  62. being in a great position, all happened after I left the church.

  63. After years of devoting his time and his money, genuinely believing that life would work out,

  64. and it didn't, and the recipe failed him, and he was disillusioned.

  65. So there's the obvious form of recipe theology.

  66. If you put in this, this, this, God will bless.

  67. I think there's a more subtle form of recipe theology.

  68. Recipe faith.

  69. That while taking into account that life is hard and that the great reward is future primarily,

  70. there's still this lurking expectation that if only you follow the steps that Jesus commands,

  71. life and ministry will basically work.

  72. Things will basically work out.

  73. What we've got in our passage today, I think, is a really strong contrast to what we saw last week.

  74. Last week, three of the disciples are up the mountain and they are blown away by the divinity of Jesus.

  75. His light shining through.

  76. But down the mountain, presumably happening around the same time,

  77. the other nine disciples are confronted with failure.

  78. Peter.

  79. And then Peter, he thinks he knows the recipe.

  80. He thinks he knows the law to follow, to pay the temple tax, which we'll come to,

  81. but Jesus blows that recipe thinking away.

  82. So we've got this contrast.

  83. Having seen the all-sufficiency of Jesus up the mountain,

  84. we've seen in the gospel so far that Jesus is the glorious son of God

  85. and it's confirmed to us in the transfiguration.

  86. Then we've got down the mountain, any superficial idea of faith that it's about following steps

  87. and it will work.

  88. That superficial idea of faith is not faith.

  89. We don't trust in a recipe.

  90. We trust in a person.

  91. So I want to ask the question,

  92. what does it mean to have faith in the all-sufficiency of Jesus

  93. as we've seen him on the mountain?

  94. Well, first in our passage,

  95. we're going to be confronted with the biggest problem we've got

  96. and that's our unbelief.

  97. Then we're going to see three ways that we are to trust that he is all that we need.

  98. In facing overwhelming obstacles, he is all we need.

  99. In dealing with our failure to trust him, he is all we need.

  100. And he is our obedience.

  101. So let's get into the story.

  102. What does it mean to have faith in the all-sufficiency of Jesus?

  103. This story about the demon-oppressed child, it's confronting, isn't it?

  104. I think it's confronting on a number of levels.

  105. It's confronting because it challenges our Western worldview of a materialistic,

  106. there's no such thing as a spiritual realm kind of culture we live in.

  107. It's confronting at that level.

  108. It's confronting because it's just a horrible situation.

  109. This child is suffering terribly.

  110. But it's most confronting because of Jesus' response.

  111. He rebukes.

  112. Mark's account of this episode puts the focus on the father of the child.

  113. It's quite a famous phrase, he says.

  114. I believe, help my unbelief.

  115. I think every Christian can resonate with that.

  116. I believe, but help my unbelief.

  117. But Matthew leaves that out, which suggests that his focus is on the disciples' failure,

  118. the nine disciples' failure.

  119. To feel the shock of Jesus' response, put yourself in the shoes of this distraught father.

  120. Like, your child, your son is tormented.

  121. This is beyond epilepsy, as hard and dangerous as epilepsy can be.

  122. This is something beyond that.

  123. Mark and Luke add the detail that he's mute.

  124. He can't communicate properly.

  125. When he does, he cries out.

  126. And it's trying to kill him.

  127. Every opportunity, fire or water, any opportunity.

  128. There is no peace in this family, no freedom, no hope.

  129. And then when they hear about hope, that others have been healed of this very thing,

  130. he brings his son to the disciples and they fail.

  131. His hopes are dashed.

  132. How would we expect Jesus to respond?

  133. I want him to respond with sympathy.

  134. I want him to respond with instantly removing the pain that this family is going through.

  135. But isn't his response shocking?

  136. Oh, faithless and twisted generation.

  137. How long am I to be with you?

  138. How long am I to bear with you?

  139. Bring him here to me.

  140. Notice he is full of mercy.

  141. He does bring peace to this child and to the family.

  142. He does rebuke the spirit and restore this family.

  143. He does bring peace.

  144. He is full of mercy.

  145. And in chapter 18, he loves children.

  146. Make no mistake.

  147. He wants all his people to have the attitude of a child.

  148. He is very protective of his children.

  149. He loves children.

  150. Let's not make any mistake there.

  151. So why such a strong rebuke?

  152. Notice his answer revolves around himself.

  153. How long am I to bear with you?

  154. His disciples' lack of faith, it's painful to him.

  155. He's got to endure it.

  156. How long am I to be with you?

  157. I think that's similar to the question when Philip asked in John 14,

  158. Jesus just show us the Father and his response, how long have I been with you?

  159. Don't you know me yet?

  160. I think it's similar to that.

  161. How long am I to be revealing who I am to you?

  162. The problem, the offence to God is a willful neglect of the evidence of who Jesus is.

  163. It's not having faith in the evidence of who he is, who he's shown himself to be.

  164. It's twisted.

  165. He uses the word twisted, which I think might be picking up Moses' words in Deuteronomy 32.

  166. After all the powerful signs that the first generation saw in being set free from Egypt,

  167. after all of that, after seeing God's glory on the mountain,

  168. after all he provided for them in the wilderness,

  169. he says they are no longer his children because they are blemished.

  170. They are crooked and twisted generation.

  171. Someone greater than Moses is here, a greater revelation.

  172. I think the twisted is saying the evidence is plain.

  173. The response of trust should be obvious.

  174. But there's a willful forgetting of who he has revealed himself to be.

  175. There's a willful distortion of who he is and what he said.

  176. Our greatest problem is not seeing God for who he is as he has clearly shown himself to be in his son.

  177. So why such a strong rebuke?

  178. Because the disciples' failure was not their incompetence.

  179. It wasn't incompetence.

  180. It was unbelief.

  181. It was a willful forgetting of who Jesus is,

  182. not putting their confidence in him that he is all they need.

  183. Now, if like me, you can relate to the disciples' failure to have faith,

  184. you should want to know what true faith is.

  185. And in the very next section, that's what we get.

  186. We get an explanation of true faith.

  187. The disciples ask him privately,

  188. why could we not cast it out?

  189. In chapter 10, they've been given authority to cast out demons.

  190. They've done it plenty of times before.

  191. Why couldn't we do it?

  192. And his response, because of your little faith.

  193. And when you hear that, doesn't your stomach just drop?

  194. It's like, I knew it.

  195. It's because I don't produce enough faith.

  196. But it's not what we bring to the table.

  197. It's not how much faith we have.

  198. If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  199. the smallest seed known in that area.

  200. He's picking an illustration here.

  201. The smallest thing you can think of,

  202. it's not about how much faith.

  203. It's about having any faith.

  204. It's the smallest faith in me.

  205. You will say to this mountain,

  206. move from here to there, and it will move.

  207. Nothing will be impossible for you.

  208. Any amount of faith is enough.

  209. Any.

  210. Because he is enough.

  211. It's not the amount of faith that we bring to Jesus.

  212. Any faith.

  213. That he is enough.

  214. He is enough.

  215. At a superficial level,

  216. the disciples did have a kind of faith,

  217. but something was superficial about it.

  218. They expected to be able to cast out the demon,

  219. but they failed.

  220. So they expected it to work.

  221. Maybe they treated the power as somehow residing in themselves.

  222. Maybe they were treating it as some kind of,

  223. if we say the right words,

  224. then the result will occur.

  225. We can't be sure.

  226. Something is going on

  227. where they have forgotten that Jesus is the source of their power.

  228. To focus on what you can do,

  229. even to ask the question,

  230. how much faith I can bring,

  231. is to focus on self.

  232. The focus is on what he can do.

  233. Even the smallest,

  234. and he will accept even the smallest faith.

  235. It's about our orientation.

  236. Is it on self or on him?

  237. A personal reliance and relationship to him is all we need.

  238. I think faith comes from seeing him.

  239. So it's not looking at yourself,

  240. working out,

  241. do I have enough faith?

  242. It's looking at him.

  243. That's when faith comes.

  244. It's hearing his promises

  245. that produces the faith.

  246. And moving mountains.

  247. Obviously,

  248. that's a figure of speech.

  249. It's used in the Old Testament.

  250. I think at one level,

  251. it contrasts the smallness of the faith.

  252. Like you're facing a mountain.

  253. She's just mustard seed.

  254. That's what you need.

  255. Because it's not about you

  256. and what you can bring to the mountain.

  257. It's about who you've got the faith in.

  258. It's his strength.

  259. Now this promise,

  260. we shouldn't start by asking,

  261. what do I want to happen in this situation?

  262. I'm facing this mountain.

  263. What do I want to happen?

  264. That's not where we start.

  265. This isn't a blank check.

  266. The promise,

  267. I'm going to use Don Carson's phrase,

  268. it's not limited by,

  269. it's limited by context,

  270. not by unbelief.

  271. So we should believe this promise.

  272. This promise is for us.

  273. You will move mountains.

  274. But the context here

  275. is the disciples

  276. are given authority

  277. to serve in Jesus' kingdom.

  278. They can confront anything

  279. that is getting in the way

  280. of serving Jesus.

  281. This promise

  282. doesn't let us decide

  283. how or when

  284. the obstacle

  285. will be removed.

  286. Because the very next verse

  287. tells us that

  288. the Son of Man

  289. will achieve

  290. his mission

  291. not by strength

  292. but by loss.

  293. It's his powerlessness

  294. that he overcomes

  295. the greatest mountains.

  296. So let's not

  297. reduce God's idea

  298. of success,

  299. God's power

  300. to our idea

  301. of success.

  302. We might have

  303. expectations

  304. of what moving

  305. mountains

  306. looks like

  307. but

  308. let's not limit God.

  309. It could feel

  310. like absolute

  311. failure

  312. for a long time

  313. but we could be

  314. if it's done

  315. in trust

  316. we can trust

  317. that Jesus

  318. is with us

  319. in confronting

  320. those obstacles.

  321. I think this promise

  322. is exactly

  323. what we need

  324. to begin

  325. facing the obstacles

  326. for serving Jesus.

  327. Like even

  328. as I start

  329. even parenting

  330. it's confusing

  331. it's overwhelming

  332. and that's just

  333. the day-to-day

  334. stuff

  335. let alone

  336. the crisis.

  337. How do I

  338. enter that

  339. with confidence?

  340. I enter it

  341. because

  342. not of what

  343. I can bring

  344. to the table

  345. but because

  346. Jesus is promising

  347. here

  348. look at me

  349. and I'm with you.

  350. Step into it

  351. it's confronting

  352. but

  353. I'm with you.

  354. He's not giving

  355. us a formula

  356. to follow

  357. do this

  358. say this

  359. and it will

  360. work.

  361. I don't think

  362. he's even

  363. giving a guarantee

  364. of quick success

  365. because Jesus

  366. lost everything

  367. before

  368. the success

  369. came.

  370. But he is

  371. promising

  372. that even

  373. the smallest

  374. focus on me

  375. that I am

  376. enough

  377. is what

  378. you need

  379. because I am

  380. with you.

  381. You are

  382. personally

  383. presently

  384. connected

  385. to me

  386. the one

  387. whose face

  388. shines like

  389. the sun

  390. I am

  391. with you.

  392. So he's

  393. all sufficient

  394. to serve

  395. him because

  396. he can face

  397. the obstacles

  398. not us.

  399. But what

  400. if

  401. what if

  402. you do

  403. fail to

  404. trust

  405. him

  406. even

  407. as

  408. small

  409. as

  410. a

  411. mustard

  412. seed

  413. which

  414. I'm

  415. just

  416. going

  417. to

  418. assume

  419. that

  420. we all

  421. fail

  422. if you're

  423. like me

  424. we fail

  425. to

  426. regularly

  427. well we

  428. get assurance

  429. here as

  430. well that

  431. he's

  432. sufficient

  433. to deal

  434. with our

  435. unbelief

  436. as well

  437. we get

  438. another

  439. prediction

  440. of his

  441. mission

  442. the

  443. son of

  444. man

  445. is about

  446. to be

  447. delivered

  448. into the

  449. hands of

  450. men

  451. and they

  452. will kill

  453. him

  454. and he

  455. will be

  456. raised

  457. on the

  458. third

  459. day

  460. the new

  461. detail in

  462. this prediction

  463. is that he's

  464. going to be

  465. delivered

  466. into the

  467. hands of

  468. men

  469. now it's

  470. not quite

  471. clear who's

  472. doing the

  473. delivering

  474. but this is

  475. a passive

  476. verb

  477. he's being

  478. delivered

  479. like this

  480. is the guy

  481. up on the

  482. mountain

  483. whose face

  484. is shining

  485. like the

  486. sun

  487. is going

  488. to be

  489. delivered

  490. like who

  491. can do

  492. that

  493. what's

  494. going

  495. it's not

  496. clear who's

  497. doing this

  498. it's not

  499. even clear

  500. how strong

  501. that word

  502. is

  503. is it

  504. handing

  505. over

  506. or is it

  507. being

  508. betrayed

  509. it could

  510. mean that

  511. so is it

  512. the father

  513. handing the

  514. son over

  515. to men

  516. is it

  517. this

  518. faithless

  519. generation

  520. of Israel

  521. handing

  522. Jesus over

  523. to the

  524. Romans

  525. to be

  526. killed

  527. is it

  528. Judas

  529. his close

  530. friend

  531. betraying

  532. him

  533. I'm not

  534. sure

  535. I don't

  536. think we

  537. can be

  538. sure

  539. perhaps

  540. all of

  541. them

  542. were in

  543. Jesus

  544. mind

  545. what we

  546. can be

  547. sure of

  548. is that

  549. he's

  550. choosing

  551. to be

  552. delivered

  553. he's

  554. telling

  555. his

  556. disciples

  557. ahead

  558. of

  559. time

  560. so that

  561. they

  562. understand

  563. so that

  564. we

  565. understand

  566. what

  567. his

  568. mission

  569. is

  570. about

  571. no one

  572. could

  573. given his

  574. glory as

  575. the son of

  576. God

  577. he must

  578. be choosing

  579. to be

  580. delivered

  581. over

  582. because

  583. it's in

  584. being

  585. delivered

  586. that he

  587. is removing

  588. the greatest

  589. mountains

  590. you and I

  591. could never

  592. face

  593. our unbelief

  594. the lies

  595. of Satan

  596. and the

  597. judgment

  598. of God

  599. that that

  600. deserves

  601. I can't

  602. bear my

  603. failure

  604. to trust

  605. him

  606. I can't

  607. bear that

  608. I can't

  609. bear the

  610. consequences

  611. of that

  612. I can't

  613. bear the

  614. shame

  615. of that

  616. but he

  617. can

  618. and he

  619. chose

  620. to

  621. he

  622. can

  623. bear

  624. our

  625. failure

  626. to

  627. trust

  628. him

  629. I

  630. was

  631. talking

  632. to

  633. someone

  634. about

  635. the

  636. ashes

  637. going on

  638. at the

  639. moment

  640. the

  641. cricket

  642. I

  643. shouldn't

  644. have to

  645. explain

  646. which

  647. sport

  648. it

  649. is

  650. should

  651. I

  652. you

  653. should

  654. know

  655. what

  656. the

  657. ashes

  658. is

  659. now

  660. this

  661. was an

  662. Australian

  663. okay

  664. but they

  665. were

  666. just

  667. praising

  668. the

  669. English

  670. mindset

  671. recently

  672. because

  673. under

  674. this

  675. new

  676. coach

  677. they're

  678. not

  679. worried

  680. about

  681. whether

  682. they'll

  683. lose

  684. their

  685. batter

  686. when

  687. they're

  688. batting

  689. whether

  690. they'll

  691. get

  692. out

  693. they're

  694. just

  695. encouraged

  696. to

  697. go

  698. for

  699. it

  700. and

  701. he

  702. was

  703. just

  704. like

  705. his

  706. face

  707. was

  708. lighting

  709. up

  710. but

  711. they

  712. weren't

  713. it

  714. doesn't

  715. matter

  716. you

  717. won't

  718. get

  719. in

  720. trouble

  721. you

  722. won't

  723. get

  724. kicked

  725. off

  726. the

  727. team

  728. if

  729. you

  730. lose

  731. your

  732. wicket

  733. go

  734. for

  735. it

  736. I

  737. think

  738. I

  739. think

  740. that's

  741. the

  742. freedom

  743. we

  744. get

  745. when

  746. we

  747. believe

  748. that

  749. Jesus

  750. can

  751. bear

  752. our

  753. failure

  754. yes

  755. our

  756. sin

  757. is

  758. serious

  759. and

  760. acknowledging

  761. it

  762. actually

  763. makes

  764. us

  765. worship

  766. him

  767. that

  768. he

  769. bore

  770. it

  771. but

  772. we

  773. can

  774. just

  775. go

  776. for

  777. it

  778. we

  779. are

  780. not

  781. going

  782. to

  783. be

  784. kicked

  785. off

  786. the

  787. team

  788. we

  789. don't

  790. have

  791. to

  792. worry

  793. about

  794. how

  795. much

  796. faith

  797. we're

  798. producing

  799. or

  800. when

  801. we

  802. don't

  803. have

  804. faith

  805. because

  806. he

  807. bears

  808. it

  809. we

  810. can

  811. just

  812. okay

  813. I

  814. failed

  815. again

  816. let's

  817. go

  818. let's

  819. go

  820. again

  821. he

  822. he's

  823. all

  824. we

  825. need

  826. to

  827. face

  828. every

  829. situation

  830. as

  831. we

  832. seek

  833. to

  834. live

  835. him

  836. and

  837. he's

  838. all

  839. we

  840. need

  841. for

  842. our

  843. failure

  844. to

  845. trust

  846. him

  847. he

  848. absorbs

  849. the

  850. offence

  851. himself

  852. and

  853. I

  854. think

  855. the

  856. final

  857. section

  858. helps

  859. us

  860. see

  861. that

  862. he

  863. is

  864. all

  865. we

  866. need

  867. for

  868. our

  869. obedience

  870. too

  871. he

  872. is

  873. our

  874. acceptance

  875. to

  876. the

  877. father

  878. we

  879. can't

  880. add

  881. to

  882. it

  883. so

  884. this

  885. tax

  886. verses

  887. 24

  888. to

  889. the

  890. end

  891. this

  892. tax

  893. don't

  894. confuse

  895. it

  896. with

  897. the

  898. tax

  899. to

  900. the

  901. Romans

  902. this

  903. wasn't

  904. tax

  905. collectors

  906. betraying

  907. their own

  908. people

  909. to the

  910. Romans

  911. this

  912. isn't

  913. a

  914. tax

  915. made

  916. up

  917. by

  918. the

  919. traditions

  920. of

  921. men

  922. this

  923. is

  924. God's

  925. law

  926. this

  927. is

  928. in

  929. Exodus

  930. this

  931. tax

  932. is

  933. for

  934. the

  935. support

  936. of

  937. the

  938. temple

  939. and

  940. its

  941. services

  942. so

  943. when

  944. the

  945. collectors

  946. ask

  947. Peter

  948. does

  949. your

  950. teacher

  951. pay

  952. the

  953. tax

  954. they're

  955. saying

  956. does

  957. he

  958. support

  959. all

  960. that

  961. the

  962. temple

  963. stands

  964. for

  965. acceptance

  966. with

  967. God

  968. access

  969. to

  970. God

  971. through

  972. the

  973. priesthood

  974. the

  975. sacrifice

  976. for

  977. sin

  978. the

  979. place

  980. for

  981. which

  982. he

  983. rules

  984. by

  985. his

  986. law

  987. and

  988. so

  989. on

  990. and

  991. so

  992. on

  993. is

  994. he

  995. for

  996. it

  997. and

  998. Peter

  999. says

  1000. yes

  1001. but

  1002. and

  1003. you can

  1004. understand why

  1005. Peter says

  1006. yes

  1007. of course

  1008. Jesus

  1009. obeys

  1010. the law

  1011. of God

  1012. but

  1013. Jesus

  1014. uses this

  1015. as a

  1016. teaching

  1017. moment

  1018. this passage

  1019. is not

  1020. saying

  1021. anything

  1022. about

  1023. whether

  1024. to pay

  1025. taxes

  1026. to

  1027. civil

  1028. authorities

  1029. if you

  1030. want an

  1031. answer

  1032. to that

  1033. give to

  1034. Caesar

  1035. what is

  1036. Caesar's

  1037. read

  1038. Romans 13

  1039. the

  1040. issue

  1041. here

  1042. is

  1043. about

  1044. the

  1045. temple

  1046. where

  1047. the

  1048. question

  1049. about

  1050. kings

  1051. and

  1052. their

  1053. taxes

  1054. is

  1055. treat

  1056. it

  1057. as

  1058. a

  1059. parable

  1060. from

  1061. who

  1062. do

  1063. kings

  1064. of

  1065. the

  1066. earth

  1067. take

  1068. toll

  1069. and

  1070. tax

  1071. from

  1072. their

  1073. sons

  1074. or

  1075. from

  1076. others

  1077. and

  1078. of

  1079. course

  1080. the

  1081. obvious

  1082. answer

  1083. is

  1084. it's

  1085. from

  1086. others

  1087. and

  1088. Jesus

  1089. conclusion

  1090. is

  1091. then

  1092. the

  1093. sons

  1094. are

  1095. free

  1096. he's

  1097. making

  1098. a

  1099. he's

  1100. making

  1101. a

  1102. statement

  1103. about

  1104. himself

  1105. when

  1106. the

  1107. father

  1108. collects

  1109. his

  1110. taxes

  1111. for

  1112. his

  1113. temple

  1114. I

  1115. am

  1116. a

  1117. son

  1118. Jesus

  1119. is

  1120. free

  1121. from

  1122. the

  1123. tax

  1124. and

  1125. he

  1126. might

  1127. be

  1128. playing

  1129. on

  1130. that

  1131. word

  1132. freedom

  1133. Jesus

  1134. is

  1135. free

  1136. from

  1137. the

  1138. obligation

  1139. of

  1140. the

  1141. law

  1142. of

  1143. God

  1144. to

  1145. be

  1146. in

  1147. right

  1148. covenant

  1149. relationship

  1150. because

  1151. that

  1152. law

  1153. was

  1154. created

  1155. for

  1156. sinful

  1157. man

  1158. to

  1159. know

  1160. God

  1161. he

  1162. is

  1163. the

  1164. eternal

  1165. son

  1166. who

  1167. has

  1168. never

  1169. sinned

  1170. he

  1171. has

  1172. a

  1173. status

  1174. with

  1175. God

  1176. much

  1177. higher

  1178. much

  1179. closer

  1180. than

  1181. the

  1182. law

  1183. can

  1184. give

  1185. incredibly

  1186. he

  1187. uses

  1188. a

  1189. plural

  1190. sons

  1191. the

  1192. sons

  1193. are

  1194. free

  1195. and

  1196. when

  1197. he

  1198. does

  1199. provide

  1200. the

  1201. coin

  1202. it

  1203. pays

  1204. for

  1205. him

  1206. and

  1207. Peter

  1208. I

  1209. think

  1210. this

  1211. is

  1212. implicitly

  1213. teaching

  1214. Peter

  1215. that

  1216. his

  1217. what

  1218. his

  1219. death

  1220. and

  1221. resurrection

  1222. is

  1223. about

  1224. to

  1225. achieve

  1226. that

  1227. Peter

  1228. and all

  1229. who belong

  1230. to Jesus

  1231. by faith

  1232. will share

  1233. in the status

  1234. of son

  1235. that Jesus

  1236. has

  1237. and all

  1238. the privileges

  1239. to go

  1240. with it

  1241. you don't

  1242. need the

  1243. temple to

  1244. access the

  1245. father

  1246. Peter

  1247. you want

  1248. to worship

  1249. bow down

  1250. right here

  1251. you want

  1252. access to the

  1253. father

  1254. through me

  1255. I

  1256. I'm

  1257. I'm

  1258. your

  1259. sacrifice

  1260. I'm

  1261. your

  1262. dwelling

  1263. place

  1264. with

  1265. God

  1266. but

  1267. how

  1268. does

  1269. Jesus

  1270. use

  1271. his

  1272. high

  1273. status

  1274. now

  1275. picture

  1276. again

  1277. this

  1278. Jesus

  1279. up

  1280. on

  1281. the

  1282. mountain

  1283. face

  1284. shining

  1285. he

  1286. does

  1287. not

  1288. need

  1289. to

  1290. pay

  1291. this

  1292. tax

  1293. as

  1294. the

  1295. unique

  1296. son

  1297. of

  1298. God

  1299. but

  1300. what

  1301. does

  1302. he

  1303. do

  1304. he

  1305. chooses

  1306. to

  1307. lower

  1308. himself

  1309. and

  1310. pay

  1311. the

  1312. tax

  1313. why

  1314. why

  1315. does

  1316. he

  1317. do

  1318. that

  1319. to

  1320. not

  1321. give

  1322. offense

  1323. now

  1324. Jesus

  1325. is

  1326. not

  1327. afraid

  1328. of

  1329. confronting

  1330. he

  1331. confronts

  1332. sin

  1333. lovingly

  1334. the

  1335. gospel

  1336. is

  1337. offensive

  1338. to

  1339. people

  1340. who

  1341. want

  1342. to

  1343. love

  1344. their

  1345. sin

  1346. it

  1347. is

  1348. offensive

  1349. but

  1350. he

  1351. wants

  1352. to

  1353. remove

  1354. any

  1355. stumbling

  1356. block

  1357. to

  1358. people

  1359. coming

  1360. to

  1361. him

  1362. for

  1363. these

  1364. Jews

  1365. it

  1366. would

  1367. have

  1368. been

  1369. a

  1370. huge

  1371. stumbling

  1372. block

  1373. to

  1374. not

  1375. support

  1376. the

  1377. temple

  1378. if

  1379. that

  1380. gets

  1381. in

  1382. the

  1383. way

  1384. of

  1385. seeing

  1386. who

  1387. he

  1388. is

  1389. he

  1390. will

  1391. humble

  1392. himself

  1393. and

  1394. do

  1395. it

  1396. and

  1397. pay

  1398. the

  1399. tax

  1400. and

  1401. then

  1402. he

  1403. gives

  1404. a

  1405. private

  1406. miracle

  1407. to

  1408. Peter

  1409. to

  1410. demonstrate

  1411. just

  1412. how

  1413. free

  1414. Jesus

  1415. is

  1416. how

  1417. free

  1418. all

  1419. who

  1420. belong

  1421. to

  1422. him

  1423. is

  1424. now

  1425. I

  1426. think

  1427. this

  1428. miracle

  1429. is

  1430. just

  1431. as

  1432. glorious

  1433. as

  1434. calming

  1435. the

  1436. storm

  1437. just

  1438. think

  1439. of

  1440. the

  1441. detail

  1442. involved

  1443. in

  1444. this

  1445. and

  1446. I

  1447. think

  1448. it's

  1449. really

  1450. comforting

  1451. because

  1452. most

  1453. of

  1454. life

  1455. is

  1456. lived

  1457. in

  1458. minutia

  1459. in

  1460. the

  1461. detail

  1462. there

  1463. had

  1464. to

  1465. be

  1466. the

  1467. right

  1468. amount

  1469. the

  1470. value

  1471. of the

  1472. coin

  1473. dropped

  1474. in

  1475. the

  1476. sea

  1477. at

  1478. some

  1479. point

  1480. whether

  1481. way

  1482. long

  1483. ago

  1484. or

  1485. while

  1486. Jesus

  1487. is

  1488. speaking

  1489. I

  1490. don't

  1491. know

  1492. who

  1493. knows

  1494. it

  1495. had

  1496. to

  1497. not

  1498. get

  1499. lost

  1500. at

  1501. the

  1502. bottom

  1503. of

  1504. the

  1505. sea

  1506. but

  1507. a

  1508. fish

  1509. had

  1510. to

  1511. grab

  1512. it

  1513. and

  1514. then

  1515. not

  1516. swallow

  1517. it

  1518. but

  1519. just

  1520. hold

  1521. it

  1522. in

  1523. its

  1524. mouth

  1525. and

  1526. then

  1527. it

  1528. had

  1529. to

  1530. be

  1531. swimming

  1532. at

  1533. the

  1534. exact

  1535. place

  1536. where

  1537. Peter

  1538. would

  1539. be

  1540. and

  1541. put

  1542. his

  1543. line

  1544. in

  1545. and

  1546. take

  1547. the

  1548. hook

  1549. and

  1550. be

  1551. the

  1552. first

  1553. to

  1554. take

  1555. the

  1556. hook

  1557. that's

  1558. detail

  1559. isn't

  1560. it

  1561. that's

  1562. that's

  1563. how much

  1564. control

  1565. this

  1566. son

  1567. has

  1568. over

  1569. the

  1570. world

  1571. like

  1572. just

  1573. imagine

  1574. Peter

  1575. holding

  1576. that

  1577. coin

  1578. after

  1579. catching

  1580. that

  1581. fish

  1582. hopefully

  1583. it

  1584. sunk

  1585. in

  1586. he

  1587. is

  1588. the

  1589. temple

  1590. he's

  1591. where

  1592. I

  1593. meet

  1594. God

  1595. hopefully

  1596. it

  1597. sunk

  1598. in

  1599. he's

  1600. calling

  1601. me

  1602. a

  1603. son

  1604. as

  1605. well

  1606. not

  1607. because

  1608. of

  1609. my

  1610. obedience

  1611. but

  1612. his

  1613. and

  1614. yet

  1615. he

  1616. lowers

  1617. himself

  1618. to

  1619. remove

  1620. stumbling

  1621. blocks

  1622. for

  1623. people

  1624. to

  1625. come

  1626. to

  1627. know

  1628. him

  1629. and

  1630. then

  1631. he

  1632. provides

  1633. exactly

  1634. what

  1635. is

  1636. needed

  1637. I

  1638. wonder

  1639. if

  1640. do

  1641. you

  1642. know

  1643. your

  1644. freedom

  1645. in

  1646. Jesus

  1647. that

  1648. Jesus

  1649. is

  1650. all

  1651. sufficient

  1652. for

  1653. your

  1654. obedience

  1655. acceptance

  1656. with

  1657. God

  1658. you

  1659. are

  1660. free

  1661. from

  1662. obligation

  1663. you

  1664. are

  1665. free

  1666. from

  1667. following

  1668. a

  1669. recipe

  1670. from

  1671. following

  1672. rules

  1673. for

  1674. how

  1675. the

  1676. Christian

  1677. life

  1678. should

  1679. work

  1680. what

  1681. does

  1682. that

  1683. freedom

  1684. look

  1685. like

  1686. well

  1687. we

  1688. see

  1689. it

  1690. in

  1691. the

  1692. apostle

  1693. Paul

  1694. one

  1695. moment

  1696. he's

  1697. saying

  1698. if

  1699. you

  1700. get

  1701. circumcised

  1702. to

  1703. be

  1704. right

  1705. with

  1706. God

  1707. you

  1708. have

  1709. you

  1710. have

  1711. fallen

  1712. away

  1713. from

  1714. Christ

  1715. and

  1716. then

  1717. the

  1718. next

  1719. moment

  1720. he

  1721. gets

  1722. Timothy

  1723. circumcised

  1724. because

  1725. he

  1726. wants

  1727. to

  1728. bring

  1729. him

  1730. on

  1731. a

  1732. missionary

  1733. trip

  1734. among

  1735. Jews

  1736. where's

  1737. the

  1738. rule

  1739. where's

  1740. the

  1741. recipe

  1742. where's

  1743. the

  1744. law

  1745. Jesus

  1746. is

  1747. our

  1748. obedience

  1749. to

  1750. God

  1751. so

  1752. there's

  1753. a new

  1754. question

  1755. it's

  1756. not

  1757. what

  1758. must

  1759. I

  1760. do

  1761. it's

  1762. how

  1763. do

  1764. I

  1765. love

  1766. Christ

  1767. in

  1768. this

  1769. situation

  1770. how

  1771. do

  1772. I

  1773. help

  1774. others

  1775. see

  1776. that

  1777. Jesus

  1778. is

  1779. all

  1780. that

  1781. you

  1782. need

  1783. must

  1784. you

  1785. give

  1786. money

  1787. to

  1788. the

  1789. church

  1790. shall

  1791. we

  1792. go

  1793. there

  1794. your

  1795. sons

  1796. and

  1797. daughters

  1798. in

  1799. him

  1800. you're

  1801. free

  1802. there's

  1803. no

  1804. rule

  1805. what

  1806. but

  1807. there is

  1808. a

  1809. new

  1810. passion

  1811. a

  1812. new

  1813. question

  1814. what

  1815. will

  1816. help

  1817. others

  1818. see

  1819. the

  1820. all

  1821. sufficiency

  1822. of

  1823. Jesus

  1824. you

  1825. might

  1826. give

  1827. way

  1828. more

  1829. than

  1830. 10%

  1831. or

  1832. not

  1833. I

  1834. don't

  1835. want

  1836. to

  1837. stray

  1838. into

  1839. rules

  1840. here

  1841. must

  1842. you

  1843. go

  1844. to

  1845. small

  1846. group

  1847. your

  1848. sons

  1849. and

  1850. daughters

  1851. you

  1852. don't

  1853. have

  1854. to

  1855. do

  1856. it

  1857. for

  1858. obedience

  1859. to

  1860. God

  1861. for

  1862. your

  1863. acceptance

  1864. but

  1865. a new

  1866. question

  1867. is

  1868. in

  1869. you

  1870. what's

  1871. going

  1872. to

  1873. help

  1874. others

  1875. see

  1876. the

  1877. all

  1878. sufficiency

  1879. of

  1880. Jesus

  1881. do you

  1882. drink

  1883. alcohol

  1884. or not

  1885. I could

  1886. raise lots

  1887. of questions

  1888. there's

  1889. just a

  1890. new

  1891. question

  1892. now

  1893. what will

  1894. help

  1895. others

  1896. see

  1897. the

  1898. all

  1899. sufficiency

  1900. of

  1901. Jesus

  1902. there's

  1903. no

  1904. recipe

  1905. there's

  1906. no

  1907. law

  1908. so

  1909. if

  1910. you

  1911. see

  1912. faith

  1913. in

  1914. Jesus

  1915. as

  1916. following

  1917. a

  1918. recipe

  1919. he

  1920. sets

  1921. out

  1922. to

  1923. make

  1924. life

  1925. and

  1926. ministry

  1927. work

  1928. that

  1929. kind

  1930. of

  1931. view

  1932. of

  1933. faith

  1934. makes

  1935. you

  1936. feel

  1937. proud

  1938. and

  1939. entitled

  1940. when

  1941. you

  1942. think

  1943. you're

  1944. following

  1945. the

  1946. recipe

  1947. or

  1948. it

  1949. just

  1950. paralyzes

  1951. you

  1952. and

  1953. just

  1954. brings

  1955. you

  1956. to

  1957. despair

  1958. when

  1959. you

  1960. think

  1961. you're

  1962. failing

  1963. the

  1964. steps

  1965. that's

  1966. not

  1967. that's

  1968. not

  1969. following

  1970. Jesus

  1971. faith

  1972. is being

  1973. vitally

  1974. personally

  1975. presently

  1976. connected

  1977. to the

  1978. one

  1979. whose

  1980. face

  1981. shines

  1982. like

  1983. the

  1984. sun

  1985. knowing

  1986. that

  1987. he

  1988. died

  1989. for

  1990. my

  1991. lack

  1992. of

  1993. faith

  1994. he

  1995. is

  1996. alive

  1997. to

  1998. share

  1999. with

  2000. me

  2001. his

  2002. status

  2003. as

  2004. son

  2005. and

  2006. he

  2007. is

  2008. with

  2009. me

  2010. facing

  2011. whatever

  2012. situation

  2013. he

  2014. has

  2015. me

  2016. in

  2017. to

  2018. help

  2019. me

  2020. live

  2021. for

  2022. him

  2023. and

  2024. to

  2025. help

  2026. show

  2027. others

  2028. that

  2029. he

  2030. is

  2031. all

  2032. that

  2033. we

  2034. need

  2035. even

  2036. the

  2037. smallest

  2038. focus

  2039. on

  2040. who

  2041. he

  2042. is

  2043. the

  2044. smallest

  2045. focus

  2046. on

  2047. who

  2048. he

  2049. is

  2050. what

  2051. he

  2052. has

  2053. done

  2054. what

  2055. he's

  2056. promised

  2057. to

  2058. do

  2059. is

  2060. all

  2061. we

  2062. need

  2063. all

  2064. we

  2065. need

  2066. to

  2067. do

  2068. now

  2069. is

  2070. ask

  2071. the

  2072. question

  2073. well

  2074. what's

  2075. going

  2076. to

  2077. help

  2078. others

  2079. see

  2080. that

  2081. he

  2082. is

  2083. all

  2084. we

  2085. need

  2086. let's

  2087. pray

  2088. Father

  2089. again

  2090. and again

  2091. I pray

  2092. that you

  2093. would

  2094. lift

  2095. our

  2096. eyes

  2097. away

  2098. from

  2099. ourselves

  2100. even

  2101. away

  2102. from

  2103. asking

  2104. the

  2105. question

  2106. of

  2107. whether

  2108. we're

  2109. trusting

  2110. enough

  2111. again

  2112. and

  2113. again

  2114. help

  2115. us

  2116. lift

  2117. our

  2118. eyes

  2119. to

  2120. your

  2121. son

  2122. and

  2123. who

  2124. you've

  2125. revealed

  2126. him

  2127. to

  2128. be

  2129. Lord

  2130. I pray

  2131. that

  2132. whatever

  2133. each of

  2134. us

  2135. is

  2136. facing

  2137. that

  2138. we

  2139. would

  2140. move

  2141. into

  2142. it

  2143. for

  2144. your

  2145. sake

  2146. not

  2147. just

  2148. to

  2149. make

  2150. things

  2151. smooth

  2152. in

  2153. life

  2154. but

  2155. seeking

  2156. to

  2157. serve

  2158. you

  2159. and

  2160. your

  2161. interest

  2162. knowing

  2163. that

  2164. your

  2165. power

  2166. is

  2167. at

  2168. work

  2169. Lord

  2170. help

  2171. us

  2172. to

  2173. know

  2174. your

  2175. forgiveness

  2176. and

  2177. restoration

  2178. when we

  2179. fail

  2180. when we

  2181. sin

  2182. Lord

  2183. help us

  2184. rejoice

  2185. that you

  2186. are enough

  2187. even in

  2188. our

  2189. failure

  2190. and Lord

  2191. help us

  2192. to do

  2193. everything

  2194. with a

  2195. new

  2196. passion

  2197. of

  2198. wanting

  2199. others

  2200. to see

  2201. Jesus

  2202. through

  2203. the choices

  2204. we make

  2205. Lord

  2206. I pray

  2207. this

  2208. in

  2209. Jesus

  2210. name

  2211. Amen
