  1. Our reading today is from Psalm 15.

  2. While you turned to that, I was thinking about this this week

  3. and I thought this was written around 3,000 years ago

  4. under the inspiration of God.

  5. It's not the shortest psalm, it's only short.

  6. Psalm 117 is the shortest.

  7. This is a close one.

  8. Psalm 15, a psalm of David.

  9. Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent?

  10. Who may live on your holy mountain?

  11. The one whose walk is blameless,

  12. who does what is righteous,

  13. who speaks the truth from the heart.

  14. Whose tongue utters no slander,

  15. who does no wrong to a neighbour

  16. and casts no slurs on others.

  17. Who despises a vile person

  18. but honours those who fear the Lord.

  19. Who keeps an oath, even when it hurts.

  20. And does not change their mind.

  21. Who lends money to the poor without interest.

  22. Who does not accept the bribe of the innocent.

  23. Whoever does these things

  24. will not be shaken.

  25. Amen.

  26. Yeah, my name's Dave.

  27. I'm one of the pastors here.

  28. If I haven't met you before,

  29. a warm welcome to you.

  30. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word.

  31. Father, I praise you that

  32. you're a God who wants us to know

  33. that we can come to you.

  34. That we can dwell in your presence.

  35. But Lord, I pray that it wouldn't be based

  36. on a false confidence

  37. but on true and solid ground.

  38. So I pray that you'd speak to each one of us

  39. through your word right now.

  40. Give us listening ears

  41. so that we know that

  42. we can rejoice in your presence.

  43. praising you for saving our soul.

  44. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  45. Amen.

  46. Well, what's the primary characteristic

  47. of a close walk with God?

  48. Who is someone who's intimate,

  49. close with God,

  50. walking through their life?

  51. I think some people will be

  52. wanting to put their confidence

  53. of acceptance with God

  54. based on some sense of religious feeling.

  55. So those moments of peace

  56. and joy and awe,

  57. often when we're in prayer or praise.

  58. Some, I think, will rely on

  59. kind of supernatural things

  60. like gifts of speaking in tongues

  61. or receiving dreams.

  62. Surely I'm close to God

  63. if I've got these supernatural experiences.

  64. I think some will look at their record

  65. of sacrifices,

  66. what I've done for God

  67. in the church

  68. and in evangelism,

  69. for social justice.

  70. Look at my giftedness.

  71. Look at the successes

  72. God has blessed my efforts

  73. for him with.

  74. Maybe some will look at their position

  75. and role in the church community.

  76. Surely I'm walking closely with God

  77. by virtue of being a pastor, right?

  78. Some will measure their closeness to God

  79. by their superior Bible knowledge

  80. compared to others.

  81. If you can articulate doctrine

  82. really clearly and persuasively,

  83. surely that person's close,

  84. walking close to God, right?

  85. And of course,

  86. some of us

  87. will not claim

  88. to be close at all.

  89. We live in a constant fear

  90. that God isn't pleased with us.

  91. I think Psalm 15

  92. cuts right through

  93. all those things,

  94. all those sense of confidence

  95. and even lack of confidence.

  96. It gives us

  97. a surprising portrait

  98. portrait of who the Lord

  99. accepts

  100. and is pleased with.

  101. So that opening question,

  102. O Lord,

  103. who shall

  104. sojourn

  105. in your tent?

  106. Who shall dwell?

  107. Who shall live

  108. on your holy hill?

  109. These two lines,

  110. they're two pictures,

  111. but they're asking

  112. the same question.

  113. The Lord's tent

  114. pictures,

  115. you've already learnt this

  116. through the children's talk,

  117. thank you, Jen.

  118. I feel like I can relax now

  119. because you've said it all,

  120. I'm just going to add

  121. some detail now.

  122. The tabernacle,

  123. it pictures the tabernacle.

  124. You read the book of Exodus

  125. and isn't it riveting,

  126. God's miracles,

  127. redeeming his people

  128. from Egypt?

  129. And then he gives the law

  130. and then do you stop

  131. reading Exodus?

  132. You get into all this detail

  133. about what?

  134. The tabernacle.

  135. What's the goal of salvation?

  136. God dwelling with his people.

  137. He wants to live

  138. with his people.

  139. And at the end of Exodus,

  140. you've got this beautiful paragraph

  141. of God dwelling

  142. in the tabernacle

  143. and they're journeying

  144. through the wilderness.

  145. When the cloud lifts,

  146. they go out.

  147. When it settles,

  148. they settle.

  149. They're being led.

  150. They're in the presence of God,

  151. knowing they're God's people.

  152. The goal of salvation

  153. was for the Lord

  154. to live among his people.

  155. And so this idea

  156. of sojourning

  157. is the idea

  158. of being a temporary resident.

  159. You're a foreigner

  160. travelling through this world

  161. like Israel

  162. were travelling through,

  163. journeying

  164. to the promised land,

  165. being led by God,

  166. knowing you belong to God,

  167. enjoying friendship,

  168. fellowship

  169. with God.

  170. And the Lord's holy hill

  171. pictures Jerusalem,

  172. the place from which

  173. he would rule his people

  174. through his chosen king.

  175. So dwelling on his holy hill

  176. is you don't belong

  177. to the nations of the world

  178. that don't know the Lord.

  179. You belong to his king.

  180. You belong to his people.

  181. You can live with God.

  182. There is no greater joy

  183. than to live in God's presence.

  184. Psalm 27 verse 4

    Psalms 27:4

  185. captures this poetically,

  186. obviously, as a psalm.

  187. One thing have I asked

  188. of the Lord.

  189. One thing.

  190. What would that one thing be?

  191. That will I seek after,

  192. that I may dwell

  193. in the house of the Lord

  194. all the days of my life.

  195. To gaze upon the beauty

  196. of the Lord

  197. and to inquire

  198. in his temple.

  199. It is the greatest thing

  200. in life.

  201. This question only makes sense

  202. if being right with God

  203. and enjoying his presence

  204. is the best thing.

  205. It's what we're made for.

  206. So if the psalms are the heart cries

  207. of God's people,

  208. this psalm catches,

  209. I think,

  210. one of the most fundamental,

  211. the most fundamental heart cry

  212. we all wonder.

  213. Am I acceptable to you, God?

  214. Do you embrace me as your own?

  215. Are we at peace?

  216. Can I enjoy you?

  217. Are you pleased with me?

  218. To even ask this question,

  219. you're on the path of wisdom.

  220. We saw last week in Psalm 14,

  221. the fool says in his heart,

  222. there is no God.

  223. Now you may not say that

  224. with your lips,

  225. but practically we can do that.

  226. You won't even be caring

  227. about this question.

  228. But if you are caring

  229. about this question,

  230. you're on the path to wisdom.

  231. The Lord wants people to come in.

  232. He wants us to come in

  233. to his presence.

  234. Like a child thrives

  235. knowing the security in the family

  236. and their father's pleasure in them.

  237. So what's the answer?

  238. Who does the Lord accept?

  239. Who does he embrace as his own?

  240. It's not just anyone and everyone.

  241. This psalm ought to have

  242. the same effect on us today

  243. as I think it would have back then

  244. in David's day.

  245. To pause and ask,

  246. am I acceptable

  247. and at peace with you, God?

  248. Now broadly speaking,

  249. verse 2 answers the question.

  250. It's the person who lives blamelessly,

  251. who does what is right

  252. and speaks truth in his heart.

  253. So that's a broad answer.

  254. That's the principle answer.

  255. And then verses 3 to 5,

  256. we get into some specifics.

  257. But just sticking with the principle first,

  258. I think that phrase,

  259. speaks truth in his heart,

  260. is key.

  261. So it either speaks truth in his heart

  262. or speaks truth from the heart.

  263. Either way,

  264. it's saying there's truth in the heart.

  265. It could be picking up Psalm 1.

  266. If you remember Psalm 1,

  267. blessed is the man

  268. who's meditating on God's word,

  269. God's law,

  270. day and night.

  271. That word meditating,

  272. meditating is murmuring.

  273. You're not murmuring your own thoughts

  274. like a crazy person.

  275. You're murmuring God's thoughts

  276. just day and night.

  277. There's truth in your mind and heart.

  278. That's the blessed person.

  279. Now if commentators write

  280. that this psalm starts a new subunit,

  281. so Psalm 15,

  282. it's like this grouping of psalms

  283. with Psalm 24

  284. because Psalm 24

  285. asks the same question.

  286. Who can dwell

  287. in your holy hill?

  288. Now if that's the case,

  289. in the middle of this subunit

  290. is Psalm 19.

  291. That's the person

  292. who looks at creation

  293. and goes,

  294. and it's just shouting truth.

  295. God is,

  296. his glory is declared

  297. in the heavens

  298. and meditating

  299. on the law of God.

  300. The law of God

  301. is pure

  302. and sweeter

  303. than honey.

  304. It is sure

  305. it can be relied upon.

  306. So truth in the heart.

  307. There's integrity.

  308. The truth in the heart

  309. overflows

  310. into

  311. true living,

  312. right living.

  313. So who is acceptable

  314. to the Lord?

  315. Who can be confident

  316. of belonging to him

  317. and enjoying fellowship

  318. with him?

  319. It's the righteous person

  320. of integrity.

  321. The truth of God

  322. in the heart

  323. overflowing

  324. into how

  325. we live.

  326. So what does

  327. righteous living

  328. look like?

  329. How can you see

  330. what's in the heart?

  331. what's the characteristic

  332. that comes out?

  333. What does truth

  334. produce?

  335. And this is where

  336. the psalm gets

  337. surprising,

  338. doesn't it?

  339. This question

  340. of vertical

  341. relationship

  342. with God

  343. suddenly turns

  344. horizontal.

  345. It's all about

  346. how we treat

  347. people.

  348. I think

  349. it's uncomfortable

  350. because

  351. if we focus

  352. on how we treat

  353. people

  354. then it challenges

  355. any other

  356. false

  357. kind of

  358. religious

  359. adherence,

  360. all those things

  361. I opened

  362. the sermon with,

  363. it challenges

  364. those things.

  365. The primary

  366. mark of

  367. spirituality

  368. is to share

  369. the character

  370. of God.

  371. love for God

  372. will overflow

  373. into a holy

  374. love

  375. for people.

  376. It's

  377. inseparable.

  378. It's to

  379. share the

  380. family likeness,

  381. sharing our

  382. Father's holy

  383. love.

  384. We worship

  385. him,

  386. we want to

  387. be like

  388. him.

  389. The righteous

  390. person will

  391. have holy

  392. brotherly

  393. love.

  394. I'm

  395. interested

  396. too by

  397. why these

  398. examples

  399. of love.

  400. There's

  401. lots of

  402. things that

  403. could have

  404. been said

  405. in this

  406. Psalm about

  407. what it

  408. means to

  409. love one

  410. another.

  411. There's so

  412. many things

  413. and obviously

  414. we need

  415. the rest

  416. of the

  417. Bible to

  418. add to

  419. this but

  420. I just

  421. wonder if

  422. these things

  423. are chosen

  424. because

  425. these ones

  426. are socially

  427. respectable

  428. sins.

  429. I'm going

  430. to use

  431. Jerry Bridges

  432. book title.

  433. Most people

  434. in society

  435. these things

  436. aren't a

  437. big deal

  438. I don't

  439. think.

  440. They're

  441. tolerated

  442. even

  443. celebrated

  444. but if

  445. you love

  446. the Lord's

  447. character

  448. if you

  449. know

  450. his

  451. character

  452. all of

  453. a sudden

  454. these things

  455. really matter.

  456. So let's

  457. go through

  458. them.

  459. Verse

  460. three

  461. it's the

  462. person

  463. who

  464. does not

  465. slander

  466. with his

  467. tongue

  468. and does

  469. no evil

  470. to his

  471. neighbour

  472. nor takes

  473. up a

  474. reproach

  475. against

  476. his

  477. friend.

  478. So doing

  479. no harm

  480. to others

  481. to their

  482. reputation

  483. even

  484. that last

  485. phrase

  486. even when

  487. they deserve

  488. it.

  489. So taking

  490. up a

  491. reproach

  492. it's to

  493. rebuke

  494. it's

  495. when they

  496. deserve it.

  497. I think

  498. why that's

  499. a problem

  500. is it's

  501. taking up

  502. it's almost

  503. like

  504. I don't

  505. know

  506. you won't

  507. let it

  508. go.

  509. You have

  510. to get

  511. vengeance.

  512. I think

  513. this is

  514. describing

  515. the woman

  516. over coffee

  517. after the

  518. service finishes

  519. who just

  520. senses that

  521. the conversation

  522. about someone

  523. else is not

  524. building up

  525. that person

  526. it's not

  527. productive at

  528. all and

  529. so they

  530. turn the

  531. conversation

  532. to another

  533. subject matter

  534. or even

  535. go hey

  536. we shouldn't

  537. be saying

  538. this or

  539. they just

  540. walk away.

  541. I think

  542. it's describing

  543. that kind

  544. of person.

  545. It's the

  546. man who's

  547. criticised

  548. who then

  549. doesn't just

  550. launch a

  551. verbal attack

  552. with the

  553. flaws of

  554. the person

  555. accusing

  556. them.

  557. Doesn't

  558. try and

  559. defend

  560. themselves

  561. like that.

  562. It's the

  563. employee who

  564. doesn't join

  565. in the

  566. workplace

  567. complaining

  568. about their

  569. boss

  570. or kids

  571. at school

  572. not joining

  573. in in

  574. that

  575. insults

  576. of that

  577. teacher

  578. that everyone

  579. insults.

  580. It's the

  581. Christian who

  582. doesn't get

  583. tunnel vision

  584. when a

  585. brother or

  586. sister wrongs

  587. them,

  588. unable to

  589. let the

  590. injustice

  591. go but

  592. who is

  593. determined

  594. to show

  595. the same

  596. grace that

  597. they've

  598. received.

  599. It's not

  600. as simple

  601. as just

  602. being polite

  603. and never

  604. saying a

  605. negative word.

  606. You read

  607. Jesus,

  608. he's the

  609. picture of

  610. perfect

  611. character and

  612. wow,

  613. he went to

  614. town on

  615. some people

  616. but it

  617. was for

  618. love's

  619. sake.

  620. God's

  621. God's

  622. words,

  623. his words

  624. give grace

  625. to those

  626. who hear

  627. even if

  628. those words

  629. are a

  630. rebuke,

  631. will care

  632. about their

  633. words and

  634. the effect

  635. on other

  636. people.

  637. verse 4,

  638. in whose

  639. eyes a

  640. vile person

  641. is despised

  642. but who

  643. honours

  644. those who

  645. fear the

  646. Lord.

  647. I think

  648. we trip

  649. over this

  650. one,

  651. don't we?

  652. It's

  653. in our

  654. so-called

  655. tolerant and

  656. inclusive

  657. day and

  658. age where

  659. everyone is

  660. cancelling

  661. each other

  662. on social

  663. media.

  664. I'm not

  665. convinced it's

  666. that tolerant.

  667. I think

  668. we can

  669. get past

  670. this doesn't

  671. seem right

  672. when we

  673. consider a

  674. few things.

  675. One is

  676. we're all

  677. evaluating

  678. people.

  679. Everyone is.

  680. It's actually

  681. good to

  682. distinguish

  683. good from

  684. evil.

  685. Everyone's

  686. doing that.

  687. It's being

  688. part of

  689. God's image

  690. to do

  691. that.

  692. Everyone is

  693. going,

  694. I'm going

  695. to embrace

  696. this because

  697. I think

  698. it's good.

  699. I'm

  700. rejecting

  701. that because

  702. it's not

  703. good.

  704. I'm going

  705. to give you

  706. a challenge.

  707. Think of

  708. a person

  709. you don't

  710. like.

  711. I'm not

  712. encouraging you

  713. to dwell on

  714. this for too

  715. long.

  716. I'm

  717. guessing as

  718. well it

  719. won't be

  720. too hard to

  721. think of

  722. someone.

  723. Take a

  724. moment and

  725. think about

  726. why you

  727. don't like

  728. them.

  729. What's

  730. the criteria

  731. you're

  732. using?

  733. Isn't

  734. it so

  735. often about

  736. do I

  737. think this

  738. person will

  739. advantage me?

  740. Will I

  741. profit from

  742. accepting this

  743. person?

  744. Or if it

  745. doesn't

  746. advantage me I

  747. might reject

  748. them.

  749. Either socially

  750. if they seem

  751. popular I'll

  752. link up with

  753. them.

  754. They're not

  755. popular I'll

  756. avoid them.

  757. Isn't it so

  758. much self

  759. centred that

  760. we evaluate

  761. people by?

  762. But this

  763. is saying

  764. you don't

  765. decide if

  766. someone's

  767. vile or

  768. not.

  769. It's not

  770. saying that.

  771. It's saying

  772. because it

  773. can also

  774. mean a

  775. rejected

  776. person is

  777. despised.

  778. So in

  779. other words

  780. it's someone

  781. who evaluates

  782. people as

  783. God sees

  784. them.

  785. Does God

  786. reject them?

  787. Does God

  788. embrace them?

  789. And so

  790. too likewise.

  791. You do

  792. likewise.

  793. It's not

  794. your criteria

  795. it's his

  796. criteria.

  797. And part

  798. of God's

  799. holy love

  800. is that

  801. he hates

  802. evil.

  803. Imagine if

  804. God loved

  805. evil.

  806. What a

  807. terrifying

  808. thought.

  809. Our problem

  810. with this is

  811. we don't

  812. hate evil

  813. enough.

  814. I just

  815. thought of

  816. all the

  817. comedians

  818. we can

  819. sometimes

  820. listen to

  821. and they're

  822. just

  823. disparaging

  824. Jesus.

  825. How can

  826. we respect

  827. this person

  828. while they

  829. do that?

  830. But we

  831. also need to

  832. be careful

  833. about who

  834. is it that

  835. God rejects

  836. and embrace

  837. and accepts.

  838. We've got to be

  839. really careful

  840. about this

  841. because Jesus

  842. was a friend

  843. of tax

  844. collectors

  845. and sinners

  846. and he

  847. reserved his

  848. harshest

  849. rejection

  850. for the

  851. religious.

  852. So we

  853. also have to

  854. be careful

  855. about how

  856. we measure

  857. those

  858. who fear

  859. the Lord

  860. or not.

  861. That is

  862. holy love.

  863. Our aim

  864. in despising

  865. is that we

  866. want that

  867. person to

  868. repent so

  869. that they're

  870. at peace

  871. with God.

  872. Our aim

  873. at despising

  874. is we

  875. don't want

  876. that others

  877. to be

  878. continually

  879. damaged by

  880. what that

  881. person is

  882. doing or

  883. let astray.

  884. Our aim

  885. in honouring

  886. those who

  887. fear the

  888. Lord is we

  889. want them

  890. not to boast

  891. in themselves,

  892. we want them

  893. to keep

  894. fearing the

  895. Lord and

  896. encourage

  897. others to

  898. do likewise.

  899. So holy

  900. love looks

  901. like accepting

  902. or rejecting

  903. people not

  904. based on your

  905. evaluation but

  906. God's

  907. evaluation,

  908. his criteria.

  909. people.

  910. Then we've

  911. got who

  912. swears to

  913. his own

  914. hurt and

  915. does not

  916. change.

  917. Their yes

  918. is yes,

  919. their no

  920. is no,

  921. whatever the

  922. personal cost.

  923. Now it's

  924. easy to keep

  925. promises when

  926. it's convenient,

  927. isn't it?

  928. It's easy,

  929. everyone does

  930. that.

  931. If it's

  932. convenient,

  933. sure,

  934. I'll keep

  935. my word.

  936. But what

  937. about if it

  938. costs you to

  939. keep your

  940. word?

  941. I think

  942. this is

  943. picturing the

  944. wife of

  945. an inconsiderate,

  946. self-centered,

  947. harsh and

  948. critical husband

  949. who feels

  950. desperately

  951. lonely but

  952. keeps seeking

  953. his eternal

  954. good,

  955. forbearing and

  956. faithfully keeping

  957. her vows.

  958. That won't

  959. feel all too

  960. nice,

  961. but that

  962. person needs

  963. to know.

  964. God is

  965. pleased.

  966. It's the

  967. employee who

  968. does quality

  969. work, even

  970. if their

  971. superiors are

  972. pressuring them

  973. to cut

  974. corners and

  975. not keep

  976. whatever promises

  977. the work

  978. made to

  979. make money

  980. or save

  981. time.

  982. It's a

  983. person who

  984. loses sleep,

  985. loses money,

  986. loses opportunities,

  987. loses approval of

  988. people because

  989. they made a

  990. prior commitment.

  991. I think it's

  992. much easier to

  993. go with what

  994. you feel like

  995. doing in the

  996. moment.

  997. It's much

  998. harder to

  999. work out all

  1000. these commitments,

  1001. which ones do I

  1002. need to keep to

  1003. honour the Lord?

  1004. Why is this the

  1005. case?

  1006. Because a family

  1007. likeness, love for

  1008. the God who is

  1009. faithful to his

  1010. word, will mean a

  1011. holy love for

  1012. people.

  1013. I will care

  1014. about my

  1015. word.

  1016. Verse 5a, who

  1017. does not put

  1018. out his money

  1019. at interest and

  1020. does not take up

  1021. a bribe against

  1022. the innocent.

  1023. This person

  1024. isn't ruled by

  1025. thinking, what

  1026. can I gain out

  1027. of this?

  1028. They're ruled by

  1029. compassion.

  1030. How can I help

  1031. this person in

  1032. need?

  1033. Now, Old

  1034. Testament law,

  1035. Exodus 22, 25,

  1036. it emphasises to

  1037. the Israelite, do

  1038. not charge

  1039. interest to a

  1040. poor Israelite.

  1041. Israelite.

  1042. It specifies the

  1043. poor Israelite.

  1044. And there was

  1045. different standards

  1046. for how you do

  1047. business among

  1048. Israelites and with

  1049. foreigners.

1050. So I'll let you do

  1051. some research in

  1052. that.

  1053. But I think the

  1054. main point here is

  1055. it's not to take

  1056. advantage of someone

  1057. who is in need.

  1058. Someone who needs

  1059. help, oh great, I

  1060. can make a profit.

  1061. You're not even

  1062. thinking that way.

  1063. It's how can I

  1064. use what I've got

  1065. for your sake?

  1066. Well, at the

  1067. moment it's the

  1068. landlord who

  1069. doesn't charge

  1070. excessive rent

  1071. simply because the

  1072. market allows them

  1073. to.

  1074. It's the building

  1075. report, I read

  1076. ABC article, it's

  1077. the building report

  1078. experts who don't

  1079. hide the defects

  1080. in a building

  1081. report.

  1082. simply to get

  1083. more business

  1084. from the real

  1085. estate agents.

  1086. It's not

  1087. accepting that

  1088. kind of bribe.

  1089. I think this

  1090. one applies.

  1091. I think it's the

  1092. Christian GP

  1093. who now might

  1094. have to risk

  1095. their job and

  1096. their reputation

  1097. not to prescribe

  1098. the abortion

  1099. pill.

  1100. people.

  1101. It's not

  1102. taking that

  1103. security at the

  1104. cost of the

  1105. innocent.

  1106. It's the

  1107. person who

  1108. lends what

  1109. they own

  1110. without the

  1111. desire to get

  1112. favours in

  1113. return.

  1114. They're ruled by

  1115. compassion, not

  1116. by what they can

  1117. gain.

  1118. It's the

  1119. person who

  1120. defends the

  1121. person wrongly

  1122. accused.

  1123. It's hard to

  1124. speak up when

  1125. that happens,

  1126. isn't it?

  1127. It's really hard

  1128. because you might

  1129. be the one who's

  1130. attacked then.

  1131. I think all

  1132. these things are

  1133. rather normal,

  1134. aren't they?

  1135. I don't know if

  1136. you agree with

  1137. me.

  1138. I think they're

  1139. pretty common.

  1140. It's just normal,

  1141. even respectable,

  1142. even respectable

  1143. among Christians

  1144. sometimes.

  1145. But they all

  1146. destroy community.

  1147. The Lord

  1148. accepts and

  1149. is pleased with

  1150. those who share

  1151. his family

  1152. likeness, who

  1153. have a holy

  1154. love because

  1155. they worship a

  1156. God of holy

  1157. love.

  1158. The Lord

  1159. accepts the

  1160. one who would

  1161. rather live at

  1162. peace with the

  1163. Lord knowing

  1164. they are his

  1165. rather than be

  1166. at home in

  1167. this sinful

  1168. world.

  1169. So the one

  1170. who does these

  1171. things will

  1172. never be moved.

  1173. What a

  1174. promise.

  1175. The problem

  1176. is obvious,

  1177. isn't it?

  1178. If we don't

  1179. do these things,

  1180. we've got to

  1181. admit that we're

  1182. not listening to

  1183. his rule.

  1184. We've got to

  1185. admit more than

  1186. that.

  1187. We don't

  1188. actually love

  1189. his character

  1190. as we ought.

  1191. his acceptance

  1192. and pleasure

  1193. in us

  1194. isn't prized

  1195. as we

  1196. ought to

  1197. prize it.

  1198. How can

  1199. I dwell

  1200. with peace

  1201. and confidence

  1202. with God

  1203. and his

  1204. holy hill

  1205. if I

  1206. don't do

  1207. these things?

  1208. Well,

  1209. this is where

  1210. the Psalms

  1211. help us as

  1212. well.

  1213. we need

  1214. a righteous

  1215. king.

  1216. On our

  1217. own,

  1218. we can't

  1219. stand,

  1220. but we

  1221. need a

  1222. righteous

  1223. king who

  1224. can represent

  1225. us,

  1226. who can

  1227. fight for

  1228. us.

  1229. As Psalm

  1230. 24 asks

  1231. this same

  1232. question again,

  1233. who shall

  1234. ascend the

  1235. hill of

  1236. the Lord?

  1237. That Psalm

  1238. ends by

  1239. picturing these

  1240. gates,

  1241. these ancient

  1242. doors,

  1243. and it's the

  1244. gates to God's

  1245. city are

  1246. shut.

  1247. Sinners

  1248. cannot come

  1249. in.

  1250. But that

  1251. Psalm ends

  1252. going,

  1253. but there

  1254. is a

  1255. king.

  1256. When he

  1257. walks up to

  1258. those doors,

  1259. they will

  1260. open.

  1261. There is a

  1262. king of

  1263. glory who

  1264. opens the

  1265. way into

  1266. paradise.

  1267. It's

  1268. Psalm 2.

  1269. God has

  1270. set up his

  1271. righteous king

  1272. on his

  1273. holy hill.

  1274. people.

  1275. We need

  1276. to take

  1277. refuge in

  1278. him.

  1279. So we

  1280. can't stand

  1281. on our

  1282. own.

  1283. The Psalms

  1284. point us

  1285. to a

  1286. king, a

  1287. righteous

  1288. king.

  1289. Obviously

  1290. David failed

  1291. at that.

  1292. Who is the

  1293. king of

  1294. glory?

  1295. It's the

  1296. Lord Jesus

  1297. Christ.

  1298. And look

  1299. at the one

  1300. he accepts.

  1301. He accepts

  1302. the one who

  1303. confesses their

  1304. lack of love

  1305. for people.

  1306. He accepts

  1307. the one with

  1308. a broken

  1309. and contrite

  1310. heart.

  1311. He will

  1312. not despise

  1313. a broken

  1314. and contrite

  1315. heart.

  1316. But he

  1317. will reject

  1318. as vile

  1319. those who

  1320. trust in

  1321. their own

  1322. righteousness.

  1323. In the

  1324. Lord Jesus

  1325. you will

  1326. never be

  1327. moved.

  1328. through him

  1329. we have

  1330. permanent

  1331. access to

  1332. God's

  1333. throne of

  1334. grace with

  1335. confidence.

  1336. Even

  1337. taking that

  1338. idea of

  1339. tent, he

  1340. is set up

  1341. he is the

  1342. tent now as

  1343. the children

  1344. that Jen

  1345. brought out.

  1346. We are in

  1347. him.

  1348. We are

  1349. united to

  1350. him.

  1351. He is

  1352. even in

  1353. us by

  1354. his spirit.

  1355. He's set

  1356. up his

  1357. home in

  1358. his people.

  1359. And then

  1360. he empowers

  1361. us to

  1362. have this

  1363. family

  1364. likeness to

  1365. love.

  1366. In

  1367. him, he

  1368. and us

  1369. we can

  1370. walk and

  1371. rest in

  1372. the presence

  1373. of God

  1374. even as

  1375. we are

  1376. foreigners

  1377. in this

  1378. self-centered

  1379. world.

  1380. So

  1381. please hear

  1382. me correctly.

  1383. Let me be

  1384. clear.

  1385. Doing

  1386. good things

  1387. do not

  1388. save us.

  1389. You cannot

  1390. add to

  1391. your full

  1392. access and

  1393. acceptance to

  1394. God what

  1395. Jesus has

  1396. done.

  1397. You can't

  1398. add to

  1399. it.

  1400. But

  1401. while we're

  1402. saved by

  1403. faith alone,

  1404. faith is

  1405. never alone.

  1406. His grace

  1407. not only

  1408. saves, it

  1409. transforms.

  1410. forms.

  1411. One

  1412. Peter

  1413. talks about

  1414. Christians

  1415. understanding

  1416. who we

  1417. are.

  1418. We are

  1419. elect

  1420. exiles.

  1421. We are

  1422. sojourners.

  1423. We don't

  1424. belong in

  1425. this world

  1426. anymore because

  1427. we've been

  1428. chosen out

  1429. of the

  1430. world.

  1431. We don't

  1432. belong.

  1433. We're

  1434. foreigners

  1435. here.

  1436. And then

  1437. having been

  1438. born again,

  1439. Peter says

  1440. to us in

  1441. 1.22,

  1442. having purified

  1443. your souls by

  1444. your obedience

  1445. to the

  1446. truth.

  1447. What's

  1448. coming next?

  1449. What was

  1450. that salvation

  1451. for?

  1452. Having been

  1453. purified so

  1454. that you're

  1455. acceptable to

  1456. God.

  1457. What's

  1458. that for?

  1459. For a

  1460. sincere,

  1461. brotherly

  1462. love.

  1463. Love one

  1464. another

  1465. earnestly

  1466. from a

  1467. pure

  1468. heart

  1469. since

  1470. you have

  1471. been

  1472. born

  1473. again.

  1474. The

  1475. primary

  1476. measure of

  1477. a close

  1478. walk with

  1479. God,

  1480. of spiritual

  1481. maturity,

  1482. of love

  1483. for God,

  1484. belonging to

  1485. his household,

  1486. it is not

  1487. religious

  1488. feelings.

  1489. It's not

  1490. what you

  1491. sacrifice to

  1492. God.

  1493. It's not

  1494. doing great

  1495. things for

  1496. God.

  1497. It's not

  1498. your knowledge,

  1499. Bible

  1500. knowledge.

  1501. God's

  1502. love.

  1503. The primary

  1504. measure of

  1505. a close

  1506. walk with

  1507. God is

  1508. holy,

  1509. brotherly

  1510. love.

  1511. I was

  1512. reading 1

  1513. Corinthians 13

  1514. this week.

  1515. You can

  1516. have tongues

  1517. of angels,

  1518. but if you

  1519. don't have

  1520. love, you're

  1521. just a

  1522. clanging

  1523. dong.

  1524. You've

  1525. got to

  1526. have love.

  1527. You can

  1528. have insights

  1529. into the

  1530. most profound

  1531. spiritual

  1532. realities of

  1533. everything,

  1534. and if

  1535. you don't

  1536. have love,

  1537. I am

  1538. nothing.

  1539. What a

  1540. state.

  1541. You can

  1542. give your

  1543. body to

  1544. the flames,

  1545. you can

  1546. sacrifice

  1547. all, but

  1548. if you

  1549. don't have

  1550. love,

  1551. it's to

  1552. no point.

  1553. Wow.

  1554. The measure

  1555. of a close

  1556. walk with

  1557. God is

  1558. holy,

  1559. brotherly

  1560. love,

  1561. because that

  1562. reflects the

  1563. holy love of

  1564. our Father,

  1565. the family

  1566. likeness.

  1567. love,

  1568. so you

  1569. can be

  1570. confident

  1571. you're

  1572. walking

  1573. closely

  1574. with

  1575. God

  1576. when the

  1577. truth of

  1578. Christ

  1579. overflows

  1580. into

  1581. brotherly

  1582. love.

  1583. Beware of

  1584. false

  1585. confidences,

  1586. but this

  1587. psalm encourages

  1588. us.

  1589. We are to

  1590. know we

  1591. will never

  1592. be moved.

  1593. I find

  1594. that a

  1595. great

  1596. encouragement

  1597. because to

  1598. do these

  1599. things, to

  1600. love in

  1601. this way,

  1602. it could

  1603. move you.

  1604. It could

  1605. cost your

  1606. reputation,

  1607. it could

  1608. cost money,

  1609. your business,

  1610. it could

  1611. cost your

  1612. job, it

  1613. could cost

  1614. friends and

  1615. family.

  1616. You might

  1617. feel incredibly

  1618. moved, but

  1619. the promise

  1620. here is you

  1621. need to know

  1622. that loving

  1623. like this,

  1624. you're

  1625. reflecting

  1626. the

  1627. Father.

  1628. You will

  1629. not be

  1630. moved from

  1631. his

  1632. acceptance

  1633. and embrace

  1634. of you.

  1635. Our

  1636. Father wants

  1637. us to know

  1638. we will

  1639. never be

  1640. moved from

  1641. him,

  1642. to know

  1643. we belong

  1644. to the

  1645. Lord's

  1646. household,

  1647. and so

  1648. expressing

  1649. that in

  1650. brotherly

  1651. love.

  1652. Why don't

  1653. we pray?

  1654. Let's pray.

  1655. thank you

  1656. Lord that

  1657. while we're

  1658. still sinners,

  1659. Christ died

  1660. for us.

  1661. Thank you

  1662. that in

  1663. our righteous

  1664. king we

  1665. have peace

  1666. with God.

  1667. God, thank

  1668. you that we

  1669. have access

  1670. into this

  1671. grace in

  1672. which we

  1673. stand, having

  1674. been filled

  1675. with your

  1676. love by

  1677. your spirit.

  1678. Lord, we

  1679. give all the

  1680. praise to

  1681. you for

  1682. making us

  1683. fully part

  1684. of your

  1685. people,

  1686. fully acceptable

  1687. to you because

  1688. of the Lord

  1689. Jesus.

  1690. and I

  1691. pray that

  1692. out of

  1693. that, out

  1694. of our

  1695. thankfulness,

  1696. that we

  1697. would want

  1698. to be

  1699. like you,

  1700. that we

  1701. would set

  1702. our hope

  1703. fully on

  1704. the grace

  1705. that we're

  1706. going to

  1707. receive when

  1708. you return,

  1709. that we

  1710. are looking

  1711. forward to

  1712. the home

  1713. of righteousness

  1714. while we

  1715. are living

  1716. in exile

  1717. and journeying

  1718. as sojourners

  1719. in this

  1720. life.

  1721. Lord, help

  1722. us set

  1723. our hope

  1724. on that

  1725. home of

  1726. righteousness

  1727. when we'll

  1728. see you

  1729. face to

  1730. face so

  1731. that we

  1732. can express

  1733. that and

  1734. give honour

  1735. to you by

  1736. the way

  1737. that we

  1738. love one

  1739. another.

  1740. In Jesus'

  1741. name I

  1742. pray.

  1743. Amen.
