  1. Good morning. We're going to read the Bible now. There are two readings. Please turn with me.

  2. First one is in Timothy, 2 Timothy 3, verses 10 to the end of the chapter, and then the first five verses of chapter 4.

    2 Timothy 3:10

  3. And then the second reading we're going to read is in 1 Peter 5, and that's going to be the first seven verses.

  4. So, 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  5. You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,

  6. my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, which persecutions I endured.

  7. Yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

  8. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  9. while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  10. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  11. knowing from whom you learned it,

  12. and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  13. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  14. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching,

  15. for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

  16. that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  17. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,

  18. who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom.

  19. Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season,

  20. reprove, rebuke, and exhort with complete patience and teaching.

  21. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching,

  22. but having itch in years, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,

  23. and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

  24. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering,

  25. do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

  26. Our next reading is from 1 Peter 5, verses 1 to 7.

    1 Peter 5:1–7

  27. So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ,

  28. as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed.

  29. Shepherd the flock of God that is among you,

  30. exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly as God would have you,

  31. not for shameful gain, but eagerly,

  32. not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.

  33. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

  34. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders.

  35. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another,

  36. for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

  37. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God,

  38. so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

  39. casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.

  40. Well, good morning, everyone.

  41. One of the things I learned and was reminded of again this week at the conference,

  42. I was at least that I need help to speak and you need help to listen.

  43. So let's pray.

  44. Lord, reshape our hearts to hear your word.

  45. Make us delight in your word.

  46. But more than that, Lord, delight in you who has spoken your word.

  47. Make us long to be like you.

  48. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

  49. Well, how should we be governed?

  50. We've been talking now for four weeks.

  51. This is our fifth week talking about the local church.

  52. How should decisions be made in our local church?

  53. Two weeks now we've looked at God's agenda.

  54. Christ has a very clear agenda for the church.

  55. But who's responsible for implementing that agenda?

  56. Who's responsible for making sure that the church stays faithful and consistent in that agenda?

  57. Big questions to wrestle with, actually.

  58. A pastor friend of mine once said these words.

  59. He said, you know, David, the greatest conflict in my ministry life, his ministry life,

  60. and that was a long one.

  61. The greatest conflict in my ministry life was not about doctrine,

  62. but about the nature of authority and leadership.

  63. In short, he said, I find that people just don't want to be led, according to God's word.

  64. That's a seriously sobering thought, isn't it?

  65. Of course, most Christians recognize the need for some form of leadership in a local church,

  66. like ours, a community.

  67. But the big issue is about the distribution of authority and leadership across the church family.

  68. That's where it comes down to.

  69. How much authority do church leaders like myself have?

  70. And then what authority and input do those who are not church leaders,

  71. which, after all, is the vast majority of a community like ours,

  72. what authority do you have in this local church community, this local church family?

  73. And it's that question, getting that right, which has been responsible for so much confusion,

  74. so much hurt,

  75. dare I say, so much passive, aggressive rebellion in local church families against leadership.

  76. And indeed, even sadder to say, it's been responsible for some open warfare against leaders in the local church.

  77. And at one extreme, some Christians give not much more than lip service to the concept of leadership.

  78. But secretly, they resent it or they ignore it and actually just do their own thing,

  79. as much as they're able to.

  80. Or perhaps they secretly hanker for a democracy.

  81. That is, well, all we need is the body of Christ,

  82. and therefore everybody should have an equal input, equal authority.

  83. We're just the body.

  84. And at the other extreme, then,

  85. some Christians expect the leaders to take all responsibility

  86. for the health and well-being and longevity of a local church family.

  87. Not just all the responsibility, but all the blame when things don't go well.

  88. While they remain passive and unthinking,

  89. or selectively involved just in the bits they like to be involved in,

  90. or, perhaps worst of all,

  91. while they sit on the sideline and critique and criticize.

  92. And again, I'm trying to be fair in this sweeping everybody into this,

  93. some Christians, and this is a terrible sadness,

  94. some Christians have been deeply wounded and traumatized

  95. by heavy-handed leadership.

  96. What I call magisterial leadership,

  97. acting as if, you know, they're the king, they're above the law.

  98. And that sort of thing has left them wounded, as I say, traumatized.

  99. And at a practical level,

  100. left them deeply suspicious of leadership.

  101. And sometimes, even after many years,

  102. people have been unable to move on from that.

  103. And so, practically,

  104. they might be in a totally different context,

  105. but they still struggle to have a positive engagement with leadership.

  106. Very quickly and easily sort of default back

  107. to combative engagement with leadership.

  108. Friends, with every other aspect of church,

  109. as we've been thinking about it,

  110. authority and leadership must be examined and established from Scripture.

  111. And this morning, I hope to give you a clear,

  112. but unfortunately it has to be necessarily brief,

  113. overview of what I believe the biblical structure of authority

  114. and leadership in our local church family ought to be.

  115. If you've got your bulletin with you or you've got it on your phone,

  116. you can maybe switch between pages or look at that.

  117. There's a diagram there.

  118. I love diagrams,

  119. but I'm not terribly good with the technology of putting them together.

  120. So it may or may not be helpful to you.

  121. I think it's a wonderful diagram,

  122. and I'm sticking to that story.

  123. You can do whatever you like.

  124. The first three or four points here this morning.

  125. The first point is this,

  126. a very basic point.

  127. We've been saying it for four weeks now.

  128. When we think about the distribution of authority and leadership,

  129. we need to establish first things first.

  130. And the first thing to establish is that it's Christ's church.

  131. Christ is Lord of his church and the chief shepherd.

  132. That's how he's described,

  133. and we'll see that in 1 Peter passage we're looking at this morning.

  134. In fact, we're going to look at it now.

  135. 1 Peter 5, verse 2,

    1 Peter 5:2

  136. talks about Jesus being the chief shepherd in verse 4.

  137. We are a local expression of God's church.

  138. We've established that over four weeks.

  139. We are, in another term, a flock,

  140. one of the flocks of Jesus,

  141. and he is the chief shepherd.

  142. We are the sheep.

  143. And he rules for us and cares for us.

  144. The church is precious to him.

  145. It is the means by which he does his work in this world.

  146. It is the context in which he means

  147. he's died for people to come to maturity.

  148. We've established all those things over recent weeks.

  149. And that's repeated across Scripture,

  150. from one end of the Bible to the other end of it.

  151. We started four weeks ago, Matthew 16, 15.

  152. No sooner has Jesus been identified by his disciples as Messiah

  153. than he actually articulates what he's come for as Messiah,

  154. and that is to establish and build his church

  155. by dying for his people.

  156. Inseparable to the role of Messiah

  157. is the building of his church.

  158. Colossians 1, verse 18.

    Colossians 1:18

  159. You can look it up if you're able to,

  160. or I'll read it to you.

  161. I assume I can find it, of course.

  162. Colossians 1, verse 18.

    Colossians 1:18

  163. It says that wonderful paragraph about the preeminence of Christ.

  164. And Christ is the head of the body, the church.

  165. It is through the church,

  166. as much as anything else in this world,

  167. that Christ will be preeminent.

  168. Christ is supreme in every way.

  169. Ephesians, we've seen in the last few weeks,

  170. from start to finish is about Christ's church.

  171. Christ's church is God's big idea.

  172. His one building project in the world,

  173. we said a couple of weeks ago.

  174. The gathered community of God's died for people,

  175. gladly serving and worshipping God.

  176. And so we could go on and on and on

  177. about the church being Christ

  178. and the preciousness of the church to Christ.

  179. But here I just want to move on quickly from this point.

  180. Friends, here's the problem with that.

  181. Given the verses I've referred to

  182. and dozens more we could consider,

  183. it is so sad.

  184. that so often Christians in local churches

  185. act as if the church is theirs

  186. to do with as a place.

  187. Act as if they have supreme authority.

  188. And in brackets,

  189. if they take supreme authority,

  190. then they're also taking supreme responsibility

  191. to care for it and protect it and nourish it and build it.

  192. But that tends to get cut off.

  193. People just want to say,

  194. well, we can do,

  195. we can make this church wherever we want it to be.

  196. It's our church.

  197. And that's the language we use.

  198. And it grates on me no end when,

  199. and I heard it,

  200. I don't know how many times it was come from this week,

  201. oh, tell me about your church.

  202. And my standard refrain was,

  203. and people thought I was just weird,

  204. I don't have a church.

  205. I minister at,

  206. but I think people just thought I was being a wally.

  207. Anyway, move on.

  208. But it's Christ's church.

  209. And that's a crucial thing to get right to start with.

  210. Secondly,

  211. Scripture is God's voice into his church

  212. and the world at large.

  213. Turn with me to 2 Timothy 3.

  214. We'll come back to 1 Peter 5 in a minute.

  215. Turn with me to 2 Timothy 3,

    2 Timothy 3:14–17

  216. verses 14 to 17.

  217. In these verses,

  218. we have a comprehensive statement

  219. about the authority of God's word

  220. and its place in the governance structure

  221. of the local church.

  222. And we're told here,

  223. the Bible is God-breathed.

  224. It is God's words in men's words.

  225. It is God speaking into his church in real time.

  226. In living words.

  227. Powerful words.

  228. The fact that it's God-breathed

  229. gives us both the source of the authority,

  230. sorry, gives us the source of God's word

  231. and the authority of God's word.

  232. It's all God wants to say

  233. into his local church.

  234. It's all God needs to say

  235. into his local church

  236. and into his world at large.

  237. His church in particular.

  238. It's through the living,

  239. breathing word of God

  240. that we begin life as Christians,

  241. as the Spirit takes that word

  242. and applies it deep in our hearts and minds.

  243. It's through the living word of God

  244. that we move towards maturity

  245. or as we've seen in other passages,

  246. grow up into salvation in Christ.

  247. What's that?

  248. Well, we're about to say in a minute,

  249. being fully equipped for responsible,

  250. wise, consistent Christian living.

  251. Verse 14, Paul's speaking to Timothy,

  252. giving him instructions as a young preacher,

  253. young pastor.

  254. As for you, Timothy,

  255. continue in what you have learned

  256. and have firmly believed,

  257. knowing from whom you learned it.

  258. That's a bit of family history there.

  259. And how from childhood,

  260. you've been acquainted with the sacred writings.

  261. Here it comes.

  262. which are able to make you wise for salvation

  263. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  264. Want to apply God's agenda?

  265. We need to be students of God's word.

  266. All scripture.

  267. Do you hear that?

  268. All scripture.

  269. Not just the bits we like,

  270. but the bits that are convenient.

  271. But all scripture

  272. is breathed out by God

  273. and profitable.

  274. It's hard to believe

  275. how some churches

  276. who turn their back in God's word

  277. can actually read that verse.

  278. They've obviously decided

  279. it's not that profitable at all.

  280. And there's something better

  281. to be front and center with in church.

  282. Profitable for teaching,

  283. for reproof,

  284. for correction,

  285. and for training in righteousness.

  286. That's the messy stuff

  287. of growing to maturity.

  288. We just need to learn to start with.

  289. And then as we learn

  290. God's way of doing things,

  291. we will stubbornly be stuck

  292. in our way of doing things.

  293. So we need,

  294. we need,

  295. you know,

  296. to be knocked around a bit

  297. by our fellow believers.

  298. To be corrected.

  299. To be challenged.

  300. Why?

  301. Not because anybody takes delight

  302. in showing up

  303. somebody else being wrong.

  304. But because it all moves us

  305. as part of this training

  306. in righteousness.

  307. Which is

  308. that the man of God

  309. or the person of God,

  310. that the believer

  311. may be competent.

  312. Competent.

  313. well,

  314. competent means

  315. to know God's word,

  316. to know the concept of grace,

  317. to be able to apply

  318. grace to other people's lives,

  319. to be able to live in grace

  320. in my own life,

  321. all the while aware of my sin

  322. and struggling to deal with it.

  323. That's what it is to be competent

  324. in God's word.

  325. And that then

  326. leads to being equipped

  327. for every good work.

  328. That is,

  329. being skilled and equipped

  330. to live

  331. as God wants me to live.

  332. That is,

  333. every good work.

  334. Doing that which is pleasing to him.

  335. Doing that which is

  336. kingdom building.

  337. Quite literally then,

  338. God's word,

  339. God's living word,

  340. is spoken

  341. into our local church here

  342. to shape us

  343. in every way

  344. possible

  345. and imaginable.

  346. And that includes me

  347. as a Christian leader.

  348. Even Christian leaders

  349. are to be under

  350. the absolute authority

  351. of God's word.

  352. It's to be the basis

  353. of every decision

  354. I make as a leader.

  355. Every action I take

  356. as a leader.

  357. Every structure

  358. I urge on the congregation

  359. as a leader.

  360. Every program

  361. that we adopt

  362. as a leader.

  363. And all of us included

  364. every conflict resolution

  365. in our church family life.

  366. The Bible must stand

  367. over reason.

  368. I.e.

  369. what I think is right.

  370. It must stand

  371. over experience.

  372. What we feel is right.

  373. or what we'd like

  374. to be right.

  375. What makes me happy.

  376. Or what works

  377. pragmatically.

  378. The Bible must stand

  379. over our culture.

  380. What our society

  381. says is right.

  382. Popular or desirable.

  383. My friends,

  384. that's why

  385. God's word

  386. is and has been

  387. and hopefully

  388. always will be

  389. central in the life

  390. of our church family.

  391. we read it

  392. and we encourage you

  393. to teach it.

  394. Read it.

  395. Sorry,

  396. we read it

  397. and we teach it

  398. and we encourage you

  399. to read it

  400. and learn it.

  401. Both in this community

  402. and its subunits

  403. as we meet

  404. during the week

  405. but also in your

  406. biological family

  407. in the home

  408. day by day,

  409. week by week.

  410. We're constantly

  411. encouraging God's people

  412. to dig into

  413. God's word.

  414. Why?

  415. Just because it's

  416. something that

  417. we get the hots for?

  418. No,

  419. because God's word

  420. is so central

  421. to who we are

  422. as a people,

  423. as a community.

  424. We cannot be

  425. the community

  426. that we call

  427. ourselves God's church

  428. apart from being

  429. competent

  430. in God's word.

  431. Expanding our

  432. understanding of it

  433. and applying

  434. its wisdom

  435. and truth

  436. to your life

  437. individually

  438. and the community

  439. life of this

  440. local church family.

  441. Now,

  442. again,

  443. let me just pause

  444. there before I move

  445. on to the next point

  446. and just ask a question.

  447. The question comes

  448. down to a very simple

  449. one,

  450. that is,

  451. does God's word

  452. have that much

  453. authority,

  454. that much

  455. immediacy,

  456. that much

  457. importance

  458. to you?

  459. Make it really,

  460. really practical.

  461. Does God's word

  462. shape

  463. your determination

  464. and your thinking

  465. as you walk

  466. in that door

  467. every Sunday morning

  468. to be in community,

  469. the community

  470. we call the church?

  471. It should.

  472. But I have to

  473. confess

  474. with probably

  475. the rest of you,

  476. it doesn't shape

  477. me like that

  478. as I walk

  479. in the door

  480. some morning.

  481. I'm shaped

  482. by,

  483. you know,

  484. something not

  485. sitting right on me.

  486. I'm shaped

  487. by things

  488. that happen

  489. during the week.

  490. I'm shaped

  491. by interactions

  492. with people.

  493. I'm shaped

  494. by fears.

  495. I'm shaped

  496. by lack

  497. of understanding.

  498. I'm shaped

  499. by a desire

  500. to be liked.

  501. I'm shaped

  502. by a whole heap

  503. of things.

  504. To my shame,

  505. I confess that to you.

  506. when I should

  507. be shaped

  508. by God's word

  509. when I walk

  510. in that door.

  511. Determine that

  512. every word I speak

  513. is sourced

  514. in God's love

  515. and God's grace

  516. and unity.

  517. See,

  518. the church,

  519. this series

  520. is called

  521. Church,

  522. a Forteist of Heaven.

  523. Well,

  524. what do you think

  525. is going to govern

  526. and dominate

  527. with such beauty

  528. and sweetness

  529. and delight

  530. in heaven?

  531. God's word.

  532. We're going to

  533. hang on it

  534. in a way

  535. that we've never

  536. been able

  537. to hang on it

  538. here in this life.

  539. So if we want

  540. church to be

  541. a Forteist of Heaven

  542. as people come

  543. in the door,

  544. let's be seasoned

  545. by God's word.

  546. So the question remains,

  547. does it determine

  548. your commitment

  549. to and involvement

  550. in this local

  551. church family?

  552. so that

  553. everything you're

  554. involved in

  555. and committed to,

  556. you do so

  557. believing those

  558. things to be

  559. helpful in moving

  560. us to competency

  561. as Christians,

  562. moving us to

  563. maturity as Christians,

  564. moving us to be

  565. equipped for God's

  566. word and good works?

  567. Does God's word

  568. ultimately drive

  569. how you operate

  570. in relationships?

  571. Does it drive you

  572. when you need

  573. to seek to

  574. repair relationships?

  575. Because let's face it,

  576. the longest

  577. relationships can be

  578. broken just like

  579. that, can't they?

  580. And don't we find

  581. it so easy to live

  582. with broken

  583. relationships?

  584. When God's word

  585. is full of the

  586. very things that

  587. we need to repair

  588. them.

  589. But we like to

  590. hang on to our

  591. hurts, don't we?

  592. More than we like

  593. to go to God's

  594. word to have

  595. things repaired.

  596. Third point then,

  597. moving on.

  598. Christ intends his

  599. people to be

  600. nurtured in

  601. structured communities.

  602. With the primary

  603. authority of Christ

  604. and God's word

  605. established,

  606. we can now

  607. sort of zone in

  608. or zoom in a little

  609. bit on the

  610. leadership structures

  611. in the church.

  612. But commonly,

  613. in a sermon like

  614. this, that would

  615. now zero in on

  616. the role of elders.

  617. And you might

  618. well expect a

  619. lecture on elders

  620. and your

  621. responsibility to

  622. them.

  623. And I'm not going

  624. to disappoint you,

  625. but maybe not the

  626. way you think.

  627. The focus would go

  628. on elders or

  629. bishops or

  630. shepherds or

  631. what's the fourth

  632. word?

  633. I can't even see

  634. me.

  635. Pastors, there

  636. you go.

  637. Sort of four words

  638. used in the New

  639. Testament that

  640. essentially can be

  641. used interchangeably.

  642. And that's where

  643. that diagram on page

  644. two comes in.

  645. And so, here's what

  646. the nuances have to

  647. start.

  648. It's clear that the

  649. scriptures have a

  650. fair bit to say about

  651. elders and the role

  652. of elders in the

  653. structure of leadership

  654. in a church.

  655. church.

  656. But, equally

  657. important, there's

  658. another structure that

  659. often gets overlooked

  660. that's spoken about

  661. just as strongly in

  662. the concept of

  663. leadership and

  664. nurturing in the

  665. church.

  666. And that concept is

  667. the interconnectedness

  668. or the interdependency

  669. of believers.

  670. believers.

  671. I like to use the

  672. term the priesthood of

  673. all believers, but

  674. people don't really

  675. understand that.

  676. So, it's the

  677. interconnectedness of

  678. the body of Christ.

  679. We've looked at that

  680. metaphor of the body

  681. over the past few

  682. weeks.

  683. And to have a

  684. healthy body, all

  685. the parts need to be

  686. working in sync.

  687. If you get some

  688. parts of the body

  689. that just aren't

  690. functioning, then

  691. you've got a

  692. distorted, terrible

  693. shape of a body,

  694. haven't you?

  695. You would say, well,

  696. there's the

  697. consequences of sin

  698. in our world.

  699. The

  700. interconnectedness of

  701. the body of Christ,

  702. which we also need to

  703. display in total

  704. balance with the

  705. role of elders.

  706. Now, again, you

  707. see, Christians tend

  708. to go to extremes in

  709. the practicalities of

  710. leadership.

  711. One extreme is the

  712. outright denial or

  713. an ignorance of the

  714. need for any

  715. functioning leadership

  716. structure in the

  717. church.

  718. Call it eldership or

  719. a leadership team or

  720. a pastor team,

  721. whatever you want to

  722. call it.

  723. And again, I'll go

  724. back to what I said

  725. in the introduction.

  726. Lots of Christians

  727. might say, well,

  728. what's all that about?

  729. Why can't we just

  730. have the body of

  731. Christ?

  732. The other extreme is

  733. to adopt an

  734. eldership or

  735. leadership structure

  736. which operates with

  737. such a controlling

  738. authoritarianism that

  739. any concept of the

  740. body is either

  741. totally obliterated or

  742. is just tokenism.

  743. So one extreme says, hey,

  744. what's your problem with

  745. leaders?

  746. All we need is the

  747. body of Christ.

  748. The other extreme

  749. says, hey, you sit

  750. down and be quiet.

  751. It's the elders that

  752. have the wisdom and

  753. the insight in this

  754. congregation.

  755. It's the elders that

  756. will decide what happens

  757. in this congregation.

  758. It's the elders that

  759. decide what this

  760. congregation is going

  761. to look like.

  762. You just sit down and

  763. wait until you're

  764. spoken to.

  765. I can take you to

  766. churches where both

  767. those operate very

  768. successfully, well,

  769. not very successfully,

  770. very openly.

  771. The key for distribution

  772. of authority according

  773. to biblical structure,

  774. I believe, is a

  775. harmonious balance

  776. recognizing both,

  777. valuing how they

  778. complement one another.

  779. The interdependent body

  780. or the priesthood of all

  781. believers is an obvious

  782. and central structure

  783. to be displayed in the

  784. local church.

  785. If you want to turn

  786. with me to Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  787. chapter 10, I'm going

  788. to jump through a few

  789. verses now, so you

  790. might just want to

  791. listen.

  792. Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  793. well-known passage,

  794. verses 22 to 25.

  795. The writer in Hebrews

  796. says to the believers,

  797. let us draw near with a

  798. true heart in full

  799. assurance of faith,

  800. with our hearts

  801. sprinkled clean from an

  802. evil conscience and our

  803. bodies washed with pure

  804. water.

  805. In other words, let's

  806. draw together very

  807. conscious of who we are

  808. in Christ.

  809. Let us hold fast the

  810. confession of our hope

  811. without wavering, for he

  812. who promised is faithful.

  813. Let's draw together, let's

  814. gather together conscious of

  815. who we are and conscious of

  816. what we will yet be as we

  817. look to the future.

  818. And out of those two

  819. things, let us consider how

  820. to stir up one another

  821. to love and good deeds.

  822. Not neglecting to meet

  823. together, as is the habit

  824. of some, but encouraging one

  825. another.

  826. And all the more as you see

  827. the day approaching.

  828. Since the church community

  829. believers are Christ's new

  830. priesthood, like the priests

  831. of old, we have a duty of

  832. care for one another.

  833. priests needed to pray for

  834. the people and care for the

  835. people.

  836. And the one another, the

  837. together idea in there is

  838. there for us.

  839. We're to pray for one

  840. another.

  841. We're to care for one

  842. another.

  843. We're to nurture one

  844. another into full assurance.

  845. We're to help one another

  846. keep our eyes fixed on the

  847. hope that's before us.

  848. We're to demonstrate and

  849. extend love, unity to one

  850. another.

  851. Together, we're to have a

  852. lifestyle which is played

  853. into the Lord and kingdom

  854. building.

  855. Ephesians 4, 1 to 16, that

  856. body matter.

  857. In a very real sense, we

  858. stand or fall together.

  859. If part of the body is not

  860. well, is not functioning, then

  861. the body becomes grotesque.

  862. And we can't just say, well,

  863. that's an arm or a leg.

  864. I don't need that bit.

  865. I'll just press on with my

  866. little finger part of life.

  867. Galatians chapter 6, verse 1,

    Galatians 6:1

  868. 1 to 4, 1 to 3.

  869. Galatians, Ephesians, here we

  870. go, we'll get there eventually.

  871. When was the last time you

  872. thought about this?

  873. Brothers, if anyone is caught

  874. in any transgression, you who

  875. are spiritual should restore

  876. him.

  877. What doesn't it say there?

  878. Well, that's the job of the

  879. elders.

  880. If those people fall off the

  881. edge of the track as

  882. Christians because they've

  883. fallen into sin, those elders

  884. just aren't doing their job

  885. again.

  886. Typical.

  887. You who are spiritual, that

  888. is, we are our brother's

  889. keeper.

  890. You have a responsibility for

  891. every other you.

  892. And I don't want to offend,

  893. where's Vicky?

  894. Don't want to offend Vicky

  895. again.

  896. So it's you all.

  897. Is that it?

  898. Instead of you's.

  899. You all have a responsibility

  900. for you.

  901. For one another.

  902. I don't know how that all

  903. works.

  904. Anyway, yep.

  905. Restore him in a spirit of

  906. gentleness.

  907. kindness.

  908. We know what we need to do

  909. and we know how we need to

  910. do it.

  911. And we need to recognize the

  912. danger in doing it.

  913. So as we have humility, lest we

  914. fall into the same trap.

  915. Keep watch on yourself, lest you

  916. too be tempted.

  917. That's our attitude of coming

  918. into helping one another.

  919. Bear one another's burdens.

  920. Well, of course, I just don't

  921. have time to listen to all that

  922. claptrap that people have.

  923. Stop whinging and get on with

  924. life.

  925. I'm too busy.

  926. Bear one another's burdens and so

  927. fulfill the law of Christ.

  928. I am my brother's keeper.

  929. The interconnectedness, the

  930. interdependency of believers.

  931. Ephesians 5, verses 15 to 21.

    Ephesians 5:15–21

  932. I'm not going to read that

  933. through, but it speaks there of

  934. the mutual submission that there

  935. needs to be in Christ's community.

  936. Why?

  937. Well, go and read it for yourself.

  938. For the benefit of all.

  939. So I need to be able to submit to

  940. you.

  941. Yes, even as a leader.

  942. Expecting that the Lord at times

  943. will use me, when necessary, will

  944. use you to speak into my life.

  945. To reprove me.

  946. To correct me.

  947. To discipline me.

  948. And you need to be able to submit

  949. to me.

  950. Believing that my speaking into

  951. your life is designed for your

  952. good, your spiritual well-being.

  953. When we've had part-timers and

  954. staff, they have witnessed that

  955. first of all, years ago, and then

  956. Martin and Jeremy and others, the

  957. deal always was, or when I meet

  958. with people one-on-one for a Bible

  959. study and prayer, the deal always

  960. is.

  961. Yes, I'm 66.

  962. I've been in ministry more years

  963. than you've been alive.

  964. But if you can't come into this

  965. relationship with me, and the

  966. expectation that the Lord might use

  967. you with your limited life

  968. experience to speak into my life

  969. with a massive amount of life

  970. experience, if you can't do that,

  971. then I'm not interested.

  972. That's the way it is.

  973. Somebody coming in with limited

  974. ministry experience can cut through

  975. all the baggage and rubbish that

  976. I've accumulated over the years and

  977. get to the heart of things.

  978. Cold would stop having yourself on.

  979. Philippians 4, verses 2 and 3.

    Philippians 4:2

  980. Remember that episode dispute in the

  981. church?

  982. Between two ladies, I entreat

  983. Euodia and I entreat Sinkte to agree

  984. in the Lord.

  985. There's a problem that needs to be

  986. resolved for the sake of the church.

  987. It needs to be resolved.

  988. Yes, I ask you also, true companion,

  989. help these women who have laboured

  990. side by side with me in the gospel

  991. together with Clement and the rest of

  992. my fellow workers, whose names are in

  993. the book of life.

  994. If you read around that, this is

  995. written into the context of a

  996. community.

  997. Two ladies with a problem?

  998. Solution involves the whole community.

  999. Not the whole community in the same way

1000. at the same time, but it needs to be

  1001. the context.

1002. Help them sort out the problem and

1003. support them back into productive

  1004. gospel witness.

  1005. Hebrews 13, 7 and 17.

1006. You think I'm laboring this a little

  1007. bit?

  1008. Good.

  1009. You're getting the message.

1010. Remember your leaders, those who spoke

1011. to you the word of God.

1012. Consider the outcome of their way of

1013. life and imitate their faith.

1014. Verse 17, obey your leaders and submit

1015. to them, for they are keeping watch over

1016. your souls as those who will have to

  1017. give an account.

1018. Let them do this with joy and not with

1019. groaning, for that would be of no

  1020. advantage to you.

1021. Now those verses occur in chapter 13.

1022. If you get your Bible like mine, the

1023. heading for the chapter is spiritual

  1024. sacrifices acceptable to God.

  1025. Sacrifices pleasing to God.

1026. That is, actions and attitudes in the

1027. community of God's people which delight

  1028. the Lord.

1029. And among other things, it lists this

1030. mutuality in respect of leadership.

1031. Leadership is to be offered in the

1032. context of grace and love and concern

1033. to build one another up.

1034. And it's to be received as that.

1035. It's to be responded to in godly ways.

1036. And that package, when it works well, is

1037. a sacrifice that's pleasing to the Lord.

1038. So, zooming in even more, elders in the

1039. office of elder is fundamental to churches

  1040. across the New Testament.

1041. And today it's even more in focus for us

1042. because we're adding three more elders to

  1043. our eldership team here.

1044. Now, Christ has bought his church.

1045. It's been a massive investment on his

  1046. part.

1047. And he has secured his investment by

1048. appointing managers, if I can call them

1049. that, or elders to act on his behalf.

1050. Now, back to 1 Peter chapter 5.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1051. Verses 1 to 7.

1052. And not surprisingly then, since an elder is

1053. a manager or an undershepherd serving

1054. under the chief shepherd, it's not surprising

1055. then that the chief shepherd gives very clear

1056. parameters in which his undershepherds need to

1057. work and function and act, both in terms of what

1058. they do and in terms of the attitude and character

1059. in which they do it.

  1060. Verse 2.

1061. Shepherd the flock that is among you.

  1062. That's a picture word.

1063. It doesn't need much explanation, does it?

  1064. Shepherding.

1065. In the days of Jesus, mostly a shepherd would be in front

1066. of the flock saying, come on, follow me.

1067. And the flocks were small and not like broad agriculture

1068. here in Australia, but the flocks were small, so that's

  1069. literally what happened.

  1070. They'd follow the shepherd.

1071. But every so often the shepherd would need to be behind

  1072. them, driving them forward.

1073. And the wisdom of the shepherd would be revealed in as much

1074. as he knew which place to be at which time.

1075. But his authority is always limited whatever he's doing

  1076. because he's an undershepherd.

1077. An elder can only work with delegated authority

1078. as one who will give account to Christ, the chief shepherd,

1079. for those entrusted to our care.

1080. So contrary to what some might think, that eldership is not

1081. a blank card in terms of control and power.

1082. I labor all the time under that concept of that I one day will

1083. give an account for you people here in a way that you won't have

1084. to give an account for one another.

  1085. That's a sobering thought.

1086. In verses 2 and 3, attitude and modeling is critical,

1087. fundamental, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you.

1088. Not for shameful gain, but eagerly.

  1089. It's not about me.

1090. It's not about my remuneration.

1091. It's not about my nest egg.

1092. It's not about that which will advantage me.

1093. It's about that which will be good for God's people.

1094. And in a real sense,

1095. my life has no account

1096. before you other than that.

  1097. That's the nature of a servant.

  1098. Not domineering

  1099. over those

  1100. in your charge.

  1101. How easy is it

  1102. when you're in charge

  1103. to take charge

  1104. by manipulation,

  1105. by control,

  1106. by demandingness,

1107. by being examples to the flock.

1108. my job is to be a model

  1109. of grace

1110. and a model of Christ

  1111. to those

  1112. you

1113. whom the Lord has given me charge of.

  1114. Nothing more.

  1115. Nothing more.

  1116. Nothing more.

  1117. Nothing more.

  1118. Nothing less.

1119. And responsible for direct teaching

  1120. of God's word,

1121. both formally when we meet,

  1122. informally through counseling

  1123. and personal interaction.

  1124. Responsible for active oversight

1125. that is setting a lead

1126. in a whole range of issues

1127. which I call wisdom issues.

  1128. Issues that

1129. may not necessarily have a verse

1130. or a principle you can go to,

1131. but you take a principle

  1132. and a verse

  1133. and you work out

  1134. then the application

  1135. and a wisdom base.

1136. Well, I think this would be

1137. a good thing for us

1138. to do as a church.

1139. That wouldn't be such a good thing

1140. for us to do as a church.

  1141. And so as elders

1142. we need to be able to identify

  1143. clear principles of scripture.

1144. And then we need to be able

  1145. to propose

  1146. and encourage

  1147. and direct

  1148. and draw

  1149. people into

  1150. what's helpful

  1151. and wise,

  1152. practical applications,

  1153. strategies,

  1154. which will take us

  1155. all together

  1156. in a spiritually

  1157. healthy direction.

1158. To put it in a

  1159. colloquial country term,

1160. we just need to make sure

  1161. that the herd

  1162. is heading west.

1163. And all of the herd

  1164. is heading west.

  1165. No stragglers

  1166. left behind.

  1167. We don't shoot

  1168. or are wounded.

  1169. We're responsible

  1170. to model clearly

  1171. what we teach

  1172. as a visual aid

  1173. for the congregation

  1174. to follow.

  1175. But all the while

  1176. recognizing

  1177. that as I'm called

  1178. to be a leader,

  1179. I'm never

  1180. more than a sheep.

  1181. My authority

  1182. is never

  1183. absolute.

  1184. My authority

  1185. is only ever

  1186. delegated

  1187. and is to be

  1188. exercised

  1189. in full awareness

  1190. of my ongoing

  1191. failure and sin.

  1192. So I have

  1193. very much

  1194. limited authority

  1195. under shepherds

  1196. of Christ.

  1197. And I tell you,

  1198. I think

  1199. the scripture

  1200. and I'm now

  1201. doing one of those

  1202. wisdom applications,

  1203. I think we can

  1204. only command

  1205. authority.

  1206. This has been

  1207. my ministry

  1208. experience

  1209. and my

  1210. ministry pattern.

  1211. I've only

  1212. tried to

  1213. command authority

  1214. not by virtue

  1215. of the office.

  1216. Now listen

  1217. here,

  1218. I'm an elder.

  1219. But by virtue

  1220. of my ability

  1221. to handle

  1222. scripture

  1223. and the strength

  1224. of my life

  1225. lived among you.

  1226. In all its

  1227. ups and

  1228. down points

  1229. I think that's

  1230. where respect

  1231. comes from.

  1232. And I don't

  1233. think I have a

  1234. right to command

  1235. respect solely

  1236. based on the

  1237. office.

  1238. Even though

  1239. lots of

  1240. leaders do.

  1241. That's another

  1242. one for you to

  1243. think about.

  1244. Now the big

  1245. question is how

  1246. do we balance

  1247. these two things,

  1248. eldership and

  1249. interconnectedness,

  1250. interdependency of

  1251. the body?

  1252. Well the heading

  1253. there on your

  1254. outline is servant

  1255. leadership in the

  1256. context of the

  1257. interdependent body.

  1258. And we're almost

  1259. finished if you're

  1260. despairing.

  1261. As an elder I

  1262. must lead.

  1263. That is my brief

  1264. from the chief

  1265. shepherd.

  1266. But always as a

  1267. servant.

  1268. Now those things

  1269. don't seem to fit

  1270. together if you

  1271. look at the

  1272. general operation

  1273. of a big

  1274. company.

  1275. But that's

  1276. exactly what we

  1277. have to fit

  1278. together here in

  1279. our local church.

  1280. My lead always

1281. has to be as a

  1282. servant and always

  1283. therefore as a

  1284. servant for the

  1285. good of Christ's

  1286. people.

  1287. And never,

  1288. never to advance

  1289. my ideas or my

  1290. reputation.

  1291. And my success

  1292. will be measured

  1293. not in terms of

  1294. how great you

  1295. think I am,

  1296. popularity,

  1297. that's probably

  1298. just as well,

  1299. or how you

  1300. measure my

  1301. giftedness.

  1302. But in terms of

  1303. how well I

  1304. serve you by

  1305. pushing you into

  1306. the arms of the

  1307. Lord Jesus.

  1308. Jesus.

  1309. Jesus.

  1310. Jesus.

  1311. For grace and

  1312. mercy.

  1313. And pushing you

  1314. to have a life

  1315. shaped by trust

  1316. and delight in

  1317. his beauty.

  1318. And as an

  1319. under-shepherd

  1320. going before you

  1321. and saying,

  1322. hey, follow me,

  1323. this is the good

  1324. life this way.

  1325. As an elder I

  1326. must press you,

  1327. actively press you

  1328. to live in the

  1329. light of God's

  1330. word individually

  1331. and in our

  1332. church family

  1333. life.

  1334. But I'm

  1335. never free

  1336. to be arrogant,

  1337. manipulative

  1338. or dismissive

  1339. of you.

  1340. Or to be

  1341. controlling.

  1342. Pushing you

  1343. around as

  1344. just pieces

  1345. of furniture

  1346. to be arranged

  1347. in a big room.

  1348. And sadly,

  1349. that's where

  1350. some leaders

  1351. fall.

  1352. Well,

  1353. but equally

  1354. true,

  1355. my leading

  1356. as an elder

  1357. does not

  1358. allow you

  1359. to be passive

  1360. in this

  1361. church family.

  1362. Our church

  1363. is not like

  1364. a bus

  1365. with one

  1366. driver

  1367. and everybody

  1368. else along

  1369. for the ride.

  1370. As part of

  1371. the body,

  1372. you must be

  1373. engaged

  1374. and you must

  1375. be doing

  1376. what the

  1377. Lord has

  1378. asked you

  1379. to do

  1380. in this

  1381. local

  1382. church family.

  1383. Friends,

  1384. what I'm

  1385. saying here

  1386. is that

  1387. the essence

  1388. of authority

  1389. distribution

  1390. is that

  1391. we must

  1392. not play

  1393. off one

  1394. command

  1395. against the

  1396. other.

  1397. We must

  1398. sync them

  1399. and have

  1400. them in

  1401. harmony.

  1402. You are

  1403. responsible for

  1404. the leaders

  1405. to accept,

  1406. submit to,

  1407. and relate

  1408. positively with

  1409. the elders

  1410. in this

  1411. church.

  1412. But of course,

  1413. that doesn't

  1414. mean you

  1415. can't disagree

  1416. with us

  1417. and challenge

  1418. us.

  1419. To have

  1420. one without

  1421. the other

  1422. would be

  1423. imbalanced.

  1424. Wise army

  1425. officers

  1426. will always

  1427. be open to

  1428. ideas and

  1429. suggestions

  1430. from the

  1431. soldiers.

  1432. I think

  1433. likewise,

  1434. godly,

  1435. wise elders

  1436. will welcome

  1437. challenge and

  1438. correction based

  1439. on God's

  1440. word.

  1441. wisdom or

  1442. welcome ideas

  1443. that come from

  1444. our collective

  1445. wisdom.

  1446. I hope you

  1447. know if you've

  1448. been in this

  1449. church long

  1450. enough that

  1451. we love that

  1452. bottom-up surge

  1453. of interest and

  1454. involvement and

  1455. ownership.

  1456. Collective

  1457. wisdom.

  1458. Friends,

  1459. this is a

  1460. really difficult

  1461. area.

  1462. It's difficult

  1463. to speak about.

  1464. It's been hard

  1465. for me to

  1466. actually talk

  1467. about this

  1468. this morning

  1469. without a

  1470. sense of

  1471. self-promotion.

  1472. It's a

  1473. difficult area,

  1474. but I'll tell

  1475. you this,

  1476. it's an area

  1477. that Satan

  1478. loves to

  1479. exploit.

  1480. He just

  1481. loves to

  1482. bring churches

  1483. undone over

  1484. this very

  1485. issue.

  1486. And he'll

  1487. be able to

  1488. do that in a

  1489. way he won't

  1490. be able to

  1491. prize us away

  1492. from theological

  1493. distinctives.

  1494. God's word.

  1495. God's word.

  1496. God's word.

  1497. God's word.

  1498. How do we

  1499. stand against

  1500. it?

  1501. By keeping

  1502. the bounds

  1503. of God's

  1504. word.

  1505. If we,

  1506. I,

  1507. am a

  1508. godly,

  1509. wise elder,

  1510. then I

  1511. will be

  1512. happy to

  1513. serve,

  1514. and I

  1515. will resist

  1516. any temptation

  1517. to dominate,

  1518. intimidate,

  1519. manipulate,

  1520. or treat

  1521. with derision.

  1522. Because that

  1523. would be at

  1524. odds with

  1525. serving you.

  1526. Likewise,

  1527. if you are

  1528. godly,

  1529. wise,

  1530. you will

  1531. not allow

  1532. yourself to

  1533. focus on

  1534. the short

  1535. faults and

  1536. the short

  1537. comings of

  1538. us elders.

  1539. We are but

  1540. sheep.

  1541. We are sinful

  1542. men.

  1543. When we

  1544. first became

  1545. elders,

  1546. the day we

  1547. take our

  1548. last breath

  1549. as an

  1550. elder,

  1551. we are

  1552. sinful,

  1553. failing

  1554. men.

  1555. So you

  1556. will not

  1557. allow yourself

  1558. to focus

  1559. simply on

  1560. our faults

  1561. and short

  1562. comings.

  1563. You will

  1564. speak into

  1565. our lives

  1566. to address

  1567. those faults

  1568. and short

  1569. comings,

  1570. and you're

  1571. invited to

  1572. do so.

  1573. You have

  1574. a compulsion

  1575. to do so

  1576. before the

  1577. chief shepherd

  1578. yourself.

  1579. You are

  1580. my keeper.

  1581. You cannot

  1582. simply reject

  1583. us when we

  1584. disagree with

  1585. you.

  1586. You cannot

  1587. simply withdraw

  1588. from us.

  1589. God

  1590. will

  1591. be at

  1592. odds

  1593. with

  1594. maintaining

  1595. deep

  1596. holiness

  1597. and love

  1598. and unity

  1599. in the

  1600. body of

  1601. Christ.

  1602. My

  1603. friends,

  1604. my final

  1605. sentence is

  1606. this.

  1607. Going to

  1608. either one

  1609. of these

  1610. extremes

  1611. will

  1612. seriously

  1613. weaken and

  1614. even threaten

  1615. our church.

  1616. The truth

  1617. is at both

  1618. extremes.

  1619. pray with

  1620. me again.

  1621. Lord,

  1622. help us

  1623. to avoid

  1624. building our

  1625. own little

  1626. empires.

  1627. It seems

  1628. to be the

  1629. thing we

  1630. just default

  1631. to all the

  1632. time.

  1633. We just

  1634. want to be

  1635. big fish

  1636. in small

  1637. ponds.

  1638. and we

  1639. fail,

  1640. Lord,

  1641. when we're

  1642. chasing that

  1643. dream,

  1644. we fail to

  1645. see how

  1646. ugly it

  1647. is.

  1648. And we

  1649. fail to

  1650. see,

  1651. Lord,

  1652. how grossly

  1653. it is

  1654. with the

  1655. very purpose

  1656. of you

  1657. dying for

  1658. a community

  1659. that would

  1660. be marked

  1661. by your

  1662. characteristic

  1663. of servanthood,

  1664. love,

  1665. and unity.

  1666. Help us to

  1667. care for one

  1668. another.

  1669. Help us to

  1670. encourage one

  1671. another.

  1672. help us to

  1673. submit to

  1674. one another.

  1675. And help us

  1676. to do all

  1677. these things,

  1678. Lord,

  1679. not for

  1680. personal gain

  1681. or acclamation,

  1682. but that

  1683. together we

  1684. might grow

  1685. up into

  1686. Christ and

  1687. be competent

  1688. and equipped

  1689. for every

  1690. good work.
