  1. The Bible reading today is going to be from Romans 5, verse 12 to 21, and then Romans 8, 1 to 4.

    Romans 5:12–21

  2. You can follow along in your bulletins if you like.

  3. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin,

  4. and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

  5. For sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.

  6. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam,

  7. who was a type of the one who was to come.

  8. But the free gift is not like the trespass.

  9. For if many die through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God

  10. and the free gift by the grace of that one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for many.

  11. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin.

  12. The judgment following one trespass brought condemnation,

  13. but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.

  14. For if, because of that one man's trespass, death reigned through the one man,

  15. much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness

  16. reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

  17. Therefore, as one trespass led to the condemnation for all men,

  18. so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.

  19. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners,

  20. so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

  21. Now the law came in to increase the trespass,

  22. but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,

  23. so that as sin reigned in death, grace might reign through righteousness,

  24. leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  25. And moving to Romans 8, verse 1.

    Romans 8:1

  26. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  27. The law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus

  28. from the law of sin and death.

  29. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  30. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,

  31. and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

  32. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,

  33. who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  34. Well, this morning we are embarking on a magnificent part of God's Word.

  35. One commentator calls Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  36. it says it's like the tree of life in the middle of the Garden of Eden.

  37. And as a church, we're going to spend the next five weeks

  38. savouring and being nourished by the fruit of this tree.

  39. This morning we've got just four verses,

  40. Romans chapter 8, verses 1 to 4.

    Romans 8:1–4

  41. Four verses, just 74 words in Greek,

  42. and yet the depth and breadth of Christian doctrine

  43. in these four verses is astounding.

  44. We find in these verses the justification of sinners,

  45. the unity of the three persons of the Godhead,

  46. the union with Christ,

  47. the sinfulness and helplessness of humanity,

  48. the incarnation of the Son of God,

  49. Jesus' sinless life,

  50. the atonement, sanctification,

  51. and the liberating power of the Spirit,

  52. all in these four verses.

  53. We could lose ourselves for hours,

  54. or days, or years,

  55. just in these four verses.

  56. Some of you start nervously edging towards the door.

  57. No, but fortunately,

  58. the structure of these four verses is very simple.

  59. It's very simple.

  60. Verse 1, what has been eliminated.

  61. Verse 2, the reason.

  62. Verse 3, the reason for the reason.

  63. And verse 4, what has been facilitated.

  64. So there are two outcomes,

  65. verse 1 and verse 4.

  66. The first is stated negatively,

  67. something which was,

  68. which has now been removed.

  69. And the second outcome in verse 4 is stated positively,

  70. something which was not,

  71. which has now been introduced.

  72. And then verses 2 and 3 give the explanation,

  73. the basis of those outcomes.

  74. So that's where we're headed.

  75. We're on holy ground in these verses.

  76. So let's take off our sandals,

  77. tread reverently,

  78. and ask for God's help as we get into it.

  79. So let's pray again.

  80. Heavenly Father,

  81. open our eyes

  82. that we might behold wonderful things in your word.

  83. Amen.

  84. Well, let's start with verse 1,

  85. what has been eliminated.

  86. Now, I have a friend,

  87. and he shall remain unnamed,

  88. but this friend has been recently caught several times committing traffic offences.

  89. Twice he was caught using a mobile phone while driving

  90. and once going through a red light.

  91. And on top of the fines,

  92. there is, of course,

  93. the points that will be deducted from his licence.

  94. And using a mobile phone while driving

  95. comes with a penalty of five points.

  96. We've done that twice.

  97. Going through a red light comes with a penalty of three points.

  98. And so if you do some quick maths,

  99. you'll work out that he is about to lose his licence.

  100. He's got enough points deducted that his licence is going to be gone,

  101. but he hasn't yet been told that his licence is forfeit.

  102. The consequence is there.

  103. He knows it's coming.

  104. It's hanging over him.

  105. And now he's just in this period of anxious waiting

  106. and driving as much as he can while he waits.

  107. But that's my friend.

  108. I wonder if you have ever been in a relationship

  109. with someone where the person,

  110. the other person,

  111. and maybe it's a friend,

  112. maybe it's a colleague at work,

  113. maybe it's a parent or a spouse,

  114. the other person in this relationship,

  115. what you've done wrong

  116. is always hanging over that relationship.

  117. It's always hanging over you.

  118. It's an anxious relationship

  119. because you know that at any time

  120. they might just drop into the conversation

  121. another little reminder.

  122. You know, you've failed.

  123. You hurt me.

  124. You let me down.

  125. You're not good enough.

  126. You know, sometimes I feel that way

  127. about my relationship with God, actually.

  128. Sometimes I will wake up at 2am

  129. and just find my mind racing,

  130. my mind racing with accusations.

  131. And often they're accusations about

  132. failures on my part to love other people as I ought.

  133. You know, my mind will suddenly be filled

  134. with people that I've let down,

  135. with deeds that are incomplete,

  136. with opportunities that I haven't sought

  137. or I haven't taken.

  138. You know, I think of my nan,

  139. my grandnan, 102 years old,

  140. that I haven't seen for,

  141. I think, over a year.

  142. And that the list of people will continue,

  143. the people I've let down.

  144. And I'll accuse myself,

  145. Martin, you're a fraud.

  146. You've failed.

  147. You haven't done enough.

  148. You're not good enough.

  149. But what if the,

  150. what if the Minister for Transport

  151. wrote a letter to my friend

  152. saying that she'd reviewed his offences

  153. and decided that in his case

  154. they weren't going to deduct

  155. any points from his licence?

  156. That anxious waiting

  157. that he's in at the moment,

  158. that would be replaced

  159. with overwhelming relief.

  160. And what if your friend

  161. or your relative

  162. who always brings up your failures,

  163. what if they came to you

  164. and said,

  165. you know,

  166. I've been doing some reading.

  167. Actually, I've been reading the Gospels.

  168. And I've realised that none of us is perfect.

  169. And, you know,

  170. at times we're all going to hurt one another.

  171. And we're all going to let one another down.

  172. And what's more,

  173. I've realised actually

  174. that I've been hurting you

  175. by holding this thing against you.

  176. And I want to apologise for that.

  177. And I know it's made your life miserable.

  178. And I want to change.

  179. I don't want to bring that thing up anymore.

  180. I don't want to bring those things up anymore.

  181. They're forgotten.

  182. They're gone.

  183. I'll never mention them again.

  184. And you can hold me to that.

  185. How would you respond?

  186. I suspect you'd be speechless.

  187. You'd probably be thinking to yourself,

  188. is this for real?

  189. You know,

  190. it seems too good to be true.

  191. But if that friend

  192. meant what they said

  193. and did what they said

  194. and did what they said,

  195. it would be a game changer

  196. in that relationship.

  197. And what if God said to you,

  198. you know those things

  199. that you've been lying in bed

  200. worrying about,

  201. which you've done wrong?

  202. I will never

  203. hold those against you.

  204. I mean,

  205. wow.

  206. It'd be like

  207. a spring of cool water

  208. water

  209. in a

  210. parched and weary

  211. desert.

  212. I will never

  213. hold those things

  214. against you.

  215. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:1

  216. verse 1.

  217. There is

  218. therefore

  219. now

  220. no

  221. condemnation

  222. for those

  223. who are in Christ Jesus.

  224. Did you hear that?

  225. There is

  226. therefore

  227. now

  228. no

  229. condemnation

  230. for those

  231. who are in Christ Jesus.

  232. Now,

  233. if you're here this morning

  234. and you're not a Christian,

  235. you're not

  236. in Christ Jesus,

  237. you're not

  238. united to him,

  239. I hope

  240. you're hearing this

  241. and thinking,

  242. I want to become

  243. a Christian

  244. because I want that.

  245. But if you are

  246. a Christian,

  247. you are linked

  248. to Jesus,

  249. you are united

  250. with him,

  251. you are in Christ Jesus,

  252. then this promise

  253. is for you.

  254. There is

  255. no

  256. condemnation

  257. for those

  258. who are in Christ Jesus.

  259. God is saying

  260. to you

  261. that

  262. your

  263. offences,

  264. your failures,

  265. the unrighteous

  266. things you've thought,

  267. said and done,

  268. all of those

  269. 2am

  270. accusations,

  271. they're gone.

  272. I will never

  273. raise them

  274. with you again.

  275. I will never

  276. hold them

  277. against you.

  278. I won't even

  279. speak of them.

  280. I won't

  281. bring them

  282. up

  283. in conversation

  284. with you

  285. in order to

  286. knock you down.

  287. I won't

  288. bring them

  289. up

  290. as weapons

  291. in conversation

  292. with other people

  293. to

  294. humiliate you.

  295. I'll never

  296. give you

  297. the cold

  298. shoulder

  299. treatment

  300. because of

  301. what you've

  302. done.

  303. You will

  304. not have

  305. to bear

  306. the consequences

  307. of your

  308. offences.

  309. It is

  310. done.

  311. There is

  312. therefore

  313. now

  314. no

  315. condemnation

  316. for those

  317. who are

  318. in Christ

  319. Jesus.

  320. Now we

  321. hear this

  322. and aren't

  323. we all

  324. a bit

  325. like

  326. the

  327. disciples

  328. when Jesus

  329. first appeared

  330. to them

  331. after he

  332. rose from

  333. the dead

  334. and the

  335. Gospel of

  336. Luke tells

  337. us

  338. at first

  339. they still

  340. did not

  341. believe

  342. because of

  343. joy and

  344. amazement.

  345. Aren't we

  346. like that?

  347. I mean

  348. isn't this

  349. hard to

  350. really take

  351. hold of

  352. because of

  353. joy and

  354. amazement

  355. that God

  356. would say

  357. it is

  358. done.

  359. No

  360. condemnation.

  361. And yet

  362. this is the

  363. Word of

  364. God to

  365. you.

  366. And what's

  367. more this

  368. is the

  369. conclusion

  370. that Paul

  371. has been

  372. building to

  373. the grand

  374. conclusion

  375. Paul has

  376. been building

  377. to through

  378. the whole

  379. epistle

  380. to the

  381. Romans.

  382. He spent

  383. chapters and

  384. chapters and

  385. chapters carefully

  386. making his

  387. argument because

  388. he wants us

  389. to know this

  390. is true.

  391. So let's go

  392. back to chapter

  393. one.

  394. No, we

  395. won't do

  396. that.

  397. Now how

  398. is that,

  399. right?

  400. I get to

  401. step in this

  402. morning as the

  403. substitute

  404. teacher and

  405. you know,

  406. what do I get

  407. to teach about?

  408. What's the

  409. lesson for the

  410. day?

  411. You know,

  412. maybe a bit

  413. of calculus.

  414. Would anyone

  415. like to do

  416. some calculus?

  417. Or a

  418. class on the

  419. oxidisation of

  420. ferrous metals?

  421. No, I get

  422. to speak on

  423. the grand

  424. conclusion of

  425. the book of

  426. Romans.

  427. A couple of

  428. weeks ago I

  429. was preaching

  430. at Mayfield

  431. Presbyterian and

  432. St Andrew's

  433. Presbyterian in

  434. town and you

  435. know what Tim

  436. Ravenhall, the

  437. minister there,

  438. you know what

  439. he gave me?

  440. Ezekiel chapters

    Ezekiel 38 chapter mention

  441. 38 and 39.

  442. Right?

  443. And now Tim's

  444. a great guy but

  445. you know.

  446. But then Dave

  447. Bott, right?

  448. He says,

  449. yeah you can

  450. come and speak

  451. on Romans 8

    Romans 8:1–4

  452. verses 1 to 4.

  453. Actually I think

  454. Dave realised his

  455. mistake last week

  456. because he said

  457. to me last Sunday,

  458. are you sure you

  459. know you're going

  460. to be able to do

  461. this?

  462. I can do it for

  463. you if you like.

  464. Now when I say

  465. this is the grand

  466. conclusion of the

  467. book of Romans I

  468. might be overstating

  469. it a little bit but

  470. only a little bit,

  471. right?

  472. Only slightly.

  473. Because the word

  474. therefore at the

  475. start of verse 1,

  476. it shows it's a

  477. conclusion but what

  478. it's picking up,

  479. what that therefore

  480. is picking up isn't

  481. so much what's just

  482. been said in chapter

  483. 7, it's rather the

  484. conclusion of the

  485. whole argument so

  486. far.

  487. In fact if anything

  488. it especially points

  489. back to chapter 5.

  490. So there's a bunch

  491. of terminology here

  492. in chapter 8,

  493. key words that we

  494. find in chapter 5

  495. and then repeat it

  496. in chapter 8.

  497. For example,

  498. just to pick up

  499. 2, the word

  500. condemnation.

  501. There's only two

  502. other places in

  503. Romans where it

  504. occurs in chapter 5

  505. verse 16 and

  506. chapter 5 verse 18

  507. and the word

  508. righteous requirement

  509. in verse 4,

  510. again, only occurs

  511. four other times in

  512. Romans and previously

  513. it's there in 5

  514. verse 16 and 5

  515. verse 18.

  516. Now without looking

  517. at chapter 5 in

  518. detail, you could

  519. almost read Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  520. chapter 5 as we did

  521. in the reading and

  522. then jump to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  523. chapter 8 and feel

  524. like the argument

  525. just continues.

  526. It flows naturally

  527. from chapter 5 to

  528. chapter 8.

  529. So what Paul's

  530. doing in chapter 8,

  531. he's showing the

  532. conclusions, he's

  533. developing the

  534. conclusions he's

  535. begun to develop in

  536. chapter 5 but he's

  537. giving us the

  538. conclusions of the

  539. whole argument so

  540. far.

  541. So what about

  542. chapters 6 and 7?

  543. Well in a sense

  544. chapters 6 and 7

  545. have interrupted

  546. what Paul was

  547. doing.

  548. And he starts

  549. interrogating his

  550. conclusions with

  551. these questions

  552. because everything

  553. Paul has been

  554. saying about God's

  555. grace, everything

  556. Paul's been saying

  557. about the grace of

  558. God in saving

  559. sinners, it all just

  560. sounds too good to

  561. be true.

  562. And so in chapters

  563. 6 and 7, Paul just

  564. interrogates the

  565. gospel of grace with

  566. questions.

  567. How can God's grace

  568. be the answer to

  569. sin?

  570. Doesn't it rather

  571. permit sin?

  572. Now if the more

  573. our sins increase,

  574. the more God's

  575. grace increases, then

  576. shouldn't we just

  577. sin all the more?

  578. If we're not under

  579. the law, then doesn't

  580. that just mean we're

  581. just free to sin?

  582. And Paul, after all,

  583. what are you even

  584. saying about the

  585. law?

  586. Are you saying that

  587. the law's sin?

  588. Paul interrogates the

  589. gospel of grace with

  590. these questions because

  591. it just seems too good

  592. to be true.

  593. But in chapter 8,

  594. having dealt with the

  595. objections, having

  596. answered the

  597. questions, Paul returns

  598. to where he left off

  599. in chapter 5 and he

  600. gives us his

  601. conclusion.

  602. There is therefore

  603. now no condemnation

  604. for those who are in

  605. Christ Jesus.

  606. And then Paul gives us

  607. the reason for that

  608. conclusion.

  609. The reason.

  610. Now in a sense, Paul

  611. doesn't really need to

  612. give the reason for that

  613. conclusion because he's

  614. already given it in the

  615. earlier chapters, but he

  616. repeats the reason here

  617. and he does it in a kind

  618. of unique form of words,

  619. a unique formulation

  620. and it's rich.

  621. So let's listen to it

  622. together.

  623. What's the reason that

  624. there's no condemnation

  625. for those who are in

  626. Christ Jesus?

  627. Verse 2.

  628. For God has done

  629. what the...

  630. Sorry, that's verse 3.

  631. Verse 2.

  632. For the law of the

  633. Spirit of life has set

  634. you free in Christ Jesus

  635. from the law of sin and

  636. death.

  637. What's the reason there's

  638. now no condemnation for

  639. those in Christ Jesus?

  640. It's because the law of

  641. the Spirit of life has set

  642. you free in Christ Jesus

  643. from the law of sin and

  644. death.

  645. That's the reason.

  646. Now, Paul says because

  647. one law has set you free

  648. from another law.

  649. Now, Paul here isn't

  650. speaking about the law of

  651. Moses, although usually when

  652. he uses the word law he is.

  653. In fact, in the very next

  654. verse, in verse 3, when he

  655. says law, he's talking about

  656. the law of Moses.

  657. But he isn't talking about

  658. the law here, although maybe

  659. he uses the word law because

  660. he kind of wants it there in

  661. the back of our mind by way

  662. of contrast.

  663. But he's talking about two

  664. opposing powers.

  665. Two opposing powers.

  666. Two binding principles that

  667. operate in our world.

  668. The power of the Spirit of

  669. life and the power of sin and

  670. death.

  671. Now, there's a law, there's a

  672. binding principle that

  673. operates in the part of North

  674. Lampton where I live, just

  675. across the road from the

  676. university.

  677. The law is this.

  678. When there is summer rain and

  679. sun, there will be mosquitoes.

  680. When there's summer rain and

  681. sun, there will be mosquitoes.

  682. It is an unfailing rule of our

  683. neighbourhood.

  684. Where there's one, there must

  685. be the other.

  686. A couple of years ago, the

  687. uni ran a grand challenge to

  688. address the mosquito problem and

  689. they awarded grants to, you

  690. know, the answers, the

  691. proposals that seemed the most

  692. innovative.

  693. But nothing humans do can ever

  694. overcome this law.

  695. You know, emptying out water

  696. collected in little vessels around

  697. the garden or, you know, the

  698. bottom of planters or whatever,

  699. that doesn't help.

  700. It doesn't solve the problem.

  701. Putting up like mosquito zappers,

  702. that doesn't fix the problem.

  703. Putting on insect repellent, that

  704. doesn't fix the problem.

  705. Citronella candles aren't enough.

  706. Nothing we do is ever enough to

  707. escape the law of North

  708. Lampton.

  709. It's a binding principle.

  710. There's also a law, a binding

  711. principle of the Shadwick House.

  712. The Shadwick House.

  713. It goes a bit like this.

  714. When the television is on, there

  715. will be children.

  716. When the television is on, there

  717. will be children.

  718. Now, it is an unfailing rule.

  719. In fact, it's the most effective

  720. method of gathering children.

  721. Tidying up tends to send them

  722. scattered to the, scattering to the

  723. four winds.

  724. Placing food on the dinner table is

  725. hit and miss.

  726. It has variable outcomes.

  727. But turn on the television and

  728. suddenly they're scurrying out of,

  729. you know, holes in the ground and

  730. cracks in the wall.

  731. When the television is on, there

  732. will be children.

  733. It is an unfailing rule.

  734. Likewise, there's a law, there's a

  735. binding principle of the Shadwick

  736. family Christmas.

  737. It goes like this.

  738. When my brother Jake is present, there

  739. will be Diet Coke.

  740. When my brother Jake is present, there

  741. will be Diet Coke.

  742. It's another unfailing principle.

  743. You'll never find one without the

  744. other.

  745. You see my brother and look nearby,

  746. you will find some Diet Coke.

  747. And he'll gladly share it with you.

  748. Because after all, it's an unfailing

  749. rule.

  750. His supply is limitless.

  751. It's like the widow's jar of oil,

  752. which never runs dry.

  753. Like, when my brother Jake is present,

  754. there will be Diet Coke.

  755. Each of these is an unfailing rule.

  756. Well, likewise, there is a law of

  757. sin and death.

  758. There's a law of sin and death.

  759. When there is sin, there will also be

  760. death.

  761. When there is sin, there will also be

  762. death.

  763. You know, I've used lighthearted

  764. examples, but we're not talking about

  765. something lighthearted now, are we?

  766. The universal reach of sin is confirmed

  767. by the universal reach of death.

  768. Every wrinkle, every grey hair tells a

  769. story.

  770. Here is a sinner.

  771. We may mask it for a time, we may cover

  772. it up, but it'll catch up with us.

  773. All die, because all have sinned.

  774. And there is no escape, as Paul says in

  775. Romans chapter 5, verse 17, ever since

    Romans 5:17

  776. Adam, death has reigned.

  777. It is an unfailing principle.

  778. Where there is sin, there will also be

  779. death.

  780. But God's word says here that in Christ

  781. Jesus, the law of sin and death has been

  782. overpowered by another law, by another

  783. binding principle, another unfailing

  784. principle.

  785. Where there is the Spirit, there will be

  786. life.

  787. Where there is the Spirit, there will

  788. also be life.

  789. Like the river flowing out of the garden,

  790. the Spirit brings life wherever He goes.

  791. You cannot have the Spirit and not have

  792. life.

  793. Like the dove that returned to Noah's

  794. ark with a freshly plucked olive leaf, the

  795. coming of the Spirit always brings life.

  796. We cannot, of course, draw the Spirit.

  797. We can't paint a picture of the Spirit.

  798. But if someone were to try to paint a

  799. picture of the Spirit, I imagine the

  800. canvas would be bursting with colour.

  801. With verdant green, with flowers in bloom, with

  802. children laughing at play, because wherever

  803. the Spirit is, there is life.

  804. And in Christ Jesus, this law, the law of the

  805. Spirit of life, shatters the other law, the

  806. law of sin and death.

  807. He liberates us from the old law.

  808. He breaks its hold on us.

  809. So that the old law no longer applies.

  810. The rain and sun come, but the mosquitoes do

  811. not follow.

  812. We have sinned, but death has lost its power.

  813. How is it that in Christ Jesus, the power of this

  814. new law can liberate us from the power of the old law?

  815. Well, verse 3 gives us the reason behind the reason.

  816. Verse 3.

  817. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh,

  818. could not do.

  819. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,

  820. and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.

  821. The first thing this verse says, and there's a lot this

  822. verse says, the first thing it says is

  823. that what, our liberation from the old law of sin and

  824. death, it could not be achieved by the law of Moses.

  825. It could not be achieved by the law of Moses.

  826. The law of Moses could not bring freedom, rather it brought

  827. bondage.

  828. The law of Moses could not bring justification, rather it

  829. brought condemnation.

  830. The law of Moses could not bring life, rather it brought

  831. death.

  832. The law of Moses could not bring freedom and justification

  833. and life because it was weakened by the flesh, Paul says.

  834. It was weakened by the fallen, sinful condition of humanity.

  835. The only way the law could bring freedom and justification

  836. and life would be if we, by our perfect obedience,

  837. made ourselves free,

  838. justified ourselves,

  839. made ourselves righteous.

  840. The only way the law of Moses could bring life would be if we,

  841. by our perfect obedience, earned life.

  842. The law of Moses couldn't break us free from the law of sin and

  843. death.

  844. The law of Moses itself was captive to the law of sin and

  845. death.

  846. And it strengthened the chains by which that law bound us.

  847. But what the law could not do, God has done.

  848. God has done.

  849. Now, how much is packed into this verse in verse 3?

  850. But God has done it.

  851. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own son in the likeness

  852. of sinful flesh and for sin.

  853. Let's break it down.

  854. God sent his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh.

  855. See how carefully and reverently Paul describes the incarnation of the Son of God,

  856. the becoming man of our Lord and Saviour.

  857. God sent his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, Paul says.

  858. He does not say,

  859. in the likeness of flesh,

  860. for that would imply that Jesus were not fully human.

  861. And he does not say,

  862. in sinful flesh,

  863. for that would imply Jesus was sinful just as we are.

  864. Rather, he says,

  865. in the likeness of sinful flesh,

  866. fully human,

  867. yet himself without sin,

  868. God became man.

  869. But God's sending of his son wasn't complete at the incarnation.

  870. God didn't just send his son to become a man.

  871. He sent his son for sin.

  872. For sin.

  873. That is,

  874. that his son might be an offering for sin.

  875. A sin offering.

  876. A sacrifice for the sins of which we are guilty.

  877. The sins of the human race.

  878. Indeed,

  879. the very sacrifice,

  880. the very offering that the law itself prescribed.

  881. And by doing this,

  882. God condemned sin in the flesh.

  883. Condemned sin in the flesh.

  884. Notice the repetition of that word there,

  885. condemned,

  886. in verse 3,

  887. like condemnation,

  888. in verse 1.

  889. The reason there is no condemnation,

  890. verse 1,

  891. for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  892. is because the condemnation has already fallen,

  893. verse 3.

  894. The sins which were ours,

  895. the condemnation became his.

  896. The reason the law of the spirit of life

  897. liberates us from the law of sin and death

  898. is because in Christ Jesus,

  899. the law of sin and death has already been satisfied.

  900. Its power is spent.

  901. It has no more claim.

  902. It has no more strength.

  903. Condemnation is eliminated.

  904. You know,

  905. there are lots of things we as human beings,

  906. there are lots of things we as human beings can experience,

  907. which I myself will never experience.

  908. Doing a triple somersault into an Olympic pool

  909. is something I will never experience.

  910. I'll never experience what it's like to hold a conversation in Swahili.

  911. I'll never walk on the moon.

  912. There are lots of things a human being can experience

  913. which I myself will never experience.

  914. At least not in this life.

  915. I can't so much speak for the life to come.

  916. I mean,

  917. maybe in the age to come,

  918. our resurrected bodies will be so glorious

  919. that we'll all be capable of amazing athletic feats.

  920. Maybe in the age to come,

  921. Babel will be reversed

  922. and we'll understand all tongues.

  923. And maybe in the age to come,

  924. our dominion over the natural world

  925. will be perfected

  926. and brought to such new heights

  927. that we'll walk not just on the moon,

  928. but on Mars and on Saturn as well.

  929. I don't know.

  930. But there is one thing I know

  931. I will never experience.

  932. Whether in this age

  933. or in the age to come,

  934. I will never be condemned for my sins.

  935. I will never experience in full

  936. the retributive justice of God.

  937. I will never suffer the penalty of the law.

  938. You know,

  939. the fact that Melissa Wu

  940. is an Olympic diver and I am not

  941. doesn't really mean I'll never dive.

  942. Maybe I will.

  943. The fact that Neil Armstrong was an astronaut

  944. and I'm not,

  945. that doesn't necessarily mean

  946. I won't walk on the moon.

  947. Maybe I will.

  948. Maybe I will.

  949. But the fact that the Son of God

  950. was condemned in my place,

  951. that means I will never,

  952. never,

  953. not now,

  954. not then,

  955. not ever,

  956. be condemned.

  957. Condemnation is eliminated.

  958. Do you believe it?

  959. And not only has condemnation been eliminated,

  960. but righteousness has been facilitated.

  961. Now,

  962. facilitated might not be the best word here,

  963. but I succumb to the preacher's temptation

  964. to have rhyming words.

  965. Not only has condemnation been eliminated,

  966. but righteousness has been facilitated.

  967. Look at verse 4.

  968. Verse 4.

  969. God condemned sin in the flesh,

  970. in the person of his Son.

  971. Verse 4.

  972. In order that the righteous requirement

  973. of the law might be fulfilled in us,

  974. who walk not according to the flesh,

  975. but according to the Spirit.

  976. Now,

  977. this is the second outcome of the reason

  978. and the second outcome of the reason

  979. for the reason,

  980. but it needs to be unpacked a bit,

  981. because there are some different ways

  982. we can take verse 4.

  983. And in fact,

  984. I've possibly multiple times

  985. changed my view on verse 4,

  986. so I want to give you a few options.

  987. I'll tell you what I think.

  988. What is the righteous requirement

  989. of the law

  990. that is fulfilled in us?

  991. Well,

  992. the law,

  993. again,

  994. once again,

  995. must be referring to the law of Moses.

  996. And that word righteous requirement,

  997. that needs a little bit of reflection.

  998. The Greek word basically

  999. just means a righteous thing,

  1000. right?

  1001. In the Septuagint,

1002. the Greek translation of the Old Testament,

1003. it's often used of the statutes,

  1004. in the plural,

1005. of the statutes found in the law of Moses.

1006. The statutes is used the same word,

1007. and that's again and again in the Old Testament.

  1008. Occasionally,

1009. it's used in the singular,

1010. when one individual statute or judgment

  1011. is being focused on.

  1012. In Romans,

  1013. in chapter 1,

  1014. verse 32,

1015. feel free to look at it with me if you like,

1016. but I'll read it out.

  1017. In chapter 1,

  1018. verse 32,

1019. at the end of Paul,

1020. sort of outlining how God has handed us over

  1021. to ever-increasing sin

1022. because of our refusal to acknowledge Him

  1023. and worship Him.

  1024. Romans 1,

    Romans 1:32

  1025. verse 32,

  1026. says,

1027. though they knew God's decree

  1028. or God's righteous requirement

1029. that those who practice such things deserve to die,

1030. they not only do them,

1031. but give approval to those who practice them.

  1032. Same word,

  1033. God's decree,

  1034. His righteous requirement,

  1035. His judgment.

  1036. So,

  1037. possibly,

  1038. and there in Romans,

    Romans 1:32

  1039. chapter 1,

  1040. verse 32,

  1041. what is it?

  1042. It's God's declaration

1043. that those who sin will die.

  1044. So,

  1045. possibly,

  1046. that's what it's saying here in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:4

  1047. verse 4,

1048. that by condemning sin in the flesh,

  1049. in Jesus Christ,

1050. God has satisfied that requirement of the law on our behalf,

1051. that sin leads to death,

1052. the law of sin and death,

  1053. basically.

  1054. And certainly,

  1055. that's true.

  1056. I mean,

1057. that's the point I made just a little bit earlier in this talk.

  1058. Yeah,

  1059. it's certainly the case.

1060. And that used to be sort of how I took this verse,

1061. but I probably lean now towards one or the other,

  1062. you know,

1063. taking it a different way.

1064. There are other ways that that word,

  1065. the righteous requirement,

  1066. is used in Romans.

1067. Another way it's used is in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:18

  1068. verse 18,

  1069. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:18

  1070. verse 18,

  1071. where we read,

  1072. Therefore,

1073. as one trespass led to condemnation for all men,

1074. so one act of righteousness leads to justification for all,

1075. and life for all men.

  1076. And there,

1077. the word that matches the one we're talking about,

  1078. dikaioma,

  1079. it is in Greek,

1080. is the word translated as act of righteousness.

  1081. One act of righteousness.

1082. So there in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:18

  1083. verse 18,

1084. that word is used of Jesus' obedience,

  1085. his righteousness.

1086. Adam's sin led to condemnation for all.

  1087. Jesus' righteousness,

  1088. his obedience,

1089. leads to justification for all.

1090. Our sin was given to Jesus,

1091. his righteousness given to us.

1092. So it could be talking about that,

1093. and I think that's probably more likely than the first explanation I offered,

1094. that what this is saying,

  1095. stating now positively,

1096. is that the righteous requirement of the law,

1097. the law's demand for righteousness,

1098. is satisfied because of Jesus' righteousness on our behalf,

  1099. by his obedience.

1100. Even though I think like either of those really does fit the context well,

1101. I'm still not convinced that's the primary sense of Romans 8,

    Romans 8:4

  1102. verse 4.

  1103. When Romans 8,

    Romans 8:4

1104. verse 4 says that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,

1105. what is it talking about?

  1106. Well,

1107. fulfilled there is in the passive,

1108. so it is what God does.

  1109. It's something,

1110. it's the work of God in us.

1111. Our righteous requirement is singular,

1112. but it's not talking about any one single statute of the law.

1113. I think it's talking about the law as a whole.

  1114. The law's overarching,

  1115. comprehensive requirement for righteousness.

  1116. God's law demands righteousness.

1117. It's talking about the heart of the law,

1118. it's talking about its nature and purpose,

  1119. to promote righteousness.

  1120. And Romans 8, verse 4,

    Romans 8:4

1121. isn't just saying that's fulfilled for us by Jesus,

  1122. although it certainly is,

1123. but also that the purpose of God's condemnation of sin

1124. in the death of Christ

1125. was so that the righteous requirement of the Lord

1126. might be fulfilled in us,

  1127. in us.

  1128. Now,

1129. that language of fulfilling the law comes up again in Romans,

1130. in only one other place in Romans.

1131. If you go to Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  1132. you'll find it there.

1133. Have a look at this with me,

  1134. Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  1135. Romans chapter 13, verse 8.

    Romans 13:8

  1136. Romans 13, verse 8.

    Romans 13:8

  1137. Oh,

  1138. no one anything

1139. except to love each other,

1140. for the one who loves another

  1141. has fulfilled the law.

  1142. The commandments,

1143. you shall not commit adultery,

  1144. you shall not murder,

  1145. you shall not steal,

  1146. you shall not covet,

  1147. and any other commandment

1148. are summed up in this word,

1149. you shall love your neighbour as yourself.

1150. Love does no wrong to a neighbour,

1151. therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

1152. We see the same idea in Galatians chapter 5, verse 14.

    Galatians 5:14

1153. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word,

1154. you shall love your neighbour as yourself.

1155. And both of those passages,

  1156. of course,

1157. echo the teaching of Jesus Christ himself

  1158. about the law.

  1159. Now,

1160. if I'm right to link those passages

  1161. with Romans 8, verse 4,

    Romans 8:4

  1162. then Romans 8, verse 4

    Romans 8:4

  1163. isn't just saying that

1164. Jesus takes the penalty of the law for us,

1165. and it isn't just saying that

  1166. Jesus' righteousness

1167. satisfies the demand of the law

  1168. on our behalf,

  1169. although those are true,

1170. it's also making the incredible claim

1171. that those who are in Christ Jesus

  1172. fulfil the law.

  1173. Now, the New Testament

1174. never says believers are under the law

  1175. of Moses.

  1176. The New Testament

1177. never says believers are of the law of Moses.

  1178. The New Testament

1179. never says believers belong to the law of Moses.

  1180. The New Testament

1181. never says believers have to do the law of Moses

1182. or obey the law of Moses.

  1183. But it does say

1184. that when we live a life of love,

  1185. we fulfil the law.

1186. And God condemned sin in the flesh

1187. by sending His perfect sinless Son

1188. as an offering for sin,

1189. not only so that condemnation

  1190. might be eliminated,

  1191. but so that righteousness

  1192. might be facilitated.

  1193. that love

  1194. may be

  1195. enacted

1196. in the lives of His people.

  1197. Which is also,

  1198. I must confess,

  1199. too wonderful for me

  1200. to fully comprehend.

1201. Now, when I toss and turn

  1202. at 2am

  1203. accusing myself

  1204. of all my failings,

  1205. there is

  1206. a lot of truth

  1207. in my accusations.

  1208. I am a sinner.

  1209. I do deserve condemnation.

  1210. My love

  1211. is insufficient.

  1212. My deeds

  1213. are incomplete.

  1214. complete.

1215. But when I find myself

  1216. in that headspace,

  1217. I'm not only forgetting

  1218. Romans 8 verse 1,

    Romans 8:1

  1219. I'm also forgetting

  1220. Romans 8 verse 4.

    Romans 8:4

  1221. I'm not only forgetting

  1222. that condemnation

  1223. is eliminated,

  1224. I'm also forgetting

  1225. that righteousness

  1226. is facilitated.

  1227. You know,

  1228. it's an extraordinary thing,

  1229. isn't it?

  1230. It's an extraordinary thing.

  1231. You see,

  1232. the obligation,

1233. this is what Romans 13 says,

  1234. the obligation to love

  1235. is never satisfied.

  1236. It's never completed.

1237. You can never tick off

  1238. the command

  1239. to love your neighbour.

1240. It draws us ever on.

  1241. And yet,

  1242. even still,

  1243. God can look

  1244. on our incomplete

  1245. and faltering efforts

  1246. to love one another,

  1247. and rather than condemn

  1248. our failings,

  1249. he can recognise

  1250. the beauty

  1251. of his own handiwork,

  1252. producing righteousness.

  1253. He can say,

  1254. by my Son

  1255. and through my Spirit,

  1256. the righteous requirement

  1257. of the law

  1258. is fulfilled

  1259. in you.

  1260. Condemnation

  1261. is eliminated.

  1262. Righteousness

  1263. is facilitated.

  1264. in Christ Jesus,

  1265. the law

  1266. of the Spirit

  1267. of life

  1268. has set you

  1269. free

  1270. from the law

  1271. of sin and death.

  1272. Thanks be to God.

  1273. Amen.

  1274. Amen.
