  1. Romans 8, starting from chapter 1.

  2. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  3. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

  4. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  5. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, he condemns sin in the flesh,

  6. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,

  7. who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  8. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh,

  9. but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  10. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

  11. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law.

  12. Indeed, it cannot.

  13. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  14. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit.

  15. If in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you,

  16. anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

  17. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,

  18. the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

  19. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

  20. he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies

  21. through his Spirit who dwells in you.

  22. Good morning.

  23. Good morning.

  24. We will mostly be focusing on Romans 8 verses 5 to 11,

    Romans 8:5–11

  25. but we will be starting with a slight recap, particularly looking at verse 4.

  26. So if you have that passage open, Romans chapter 8, that would be fantastic.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  27. Let's pray and ask for the Lord's help.

  28. Heavenly Father, we thank you for our freedom to gather this morning

  29. to sing your praises, to bring our requests before you in prayer,

  30. to hear your word read and to meditate on it together.

  31. Please enable me to speak clearly and truthfully this morning

  32. and may this passage of your word resonate in our hearts and encourage us.

  33. In Jesus' name, amen.

  34. Well, Australians cannot stand people who think they're better than everyone else.

  35. We value having a highly egalitarian society.

  36. Everyone gets an education.

  37. Everyone has access to healthcare.

  38. Everyone can vote.

  39. We're all equal.

  40. And when individuals succeed, whether it's in business, whether it's in politics or sport,

  41. in whatever field it is, when individuals succeed,

  42. we expect them to be humble in victory.

  43. We despise arrogance and elitism.

  44. We have what we call the tall poppy syndrome,

  45. that if anyone kind of rises up a bit too high,

  46. they're a bit too successful and especially if they let it get to their heads,

  47. we want to cut them down.

  48. Now, this love of equality and kind of opposition to anyone

  49. who gets a bit too big for their own boots,

  50. all of this, I want to suggest,

  51. is part of Christianity's legacy on Australian society,

  52. part of the legacy of Christianity's influence.

  53. Australia owes its egalitarian impulse to Christianity

  54. because the Bible contains incredible boundary-breaking declarations and ideas.

  55. Famously, Galatians 3, verse 28,

    Galatians 3:28

  56. There is neither Jew nor Greek.

  57. There is neither slave nor free.

  58. There is no male and female,

  59. for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  60. Breaking down boundaries.

  61. Matthew 23, verse 8, the words of Jesus,

    Matthew 23:8

  62. But you are not to be called rabbi,

  63. for you have one teacher,

  64. and you are all brothers.

  65. There's one Lord,

  66. one teacher, one Father,

  67. and we're all brothers.

  68. We're all the same.

  69. Or think of Paul's appeal to Philemon

  70. on behalf of his runaway slave,

  71. Onesimus.

  72. And Paul writes,

  73. For perhaps this is why he was parted from you for a while,

  74. that you might have him back forever,

  75. no longer as a slave,

  76. but as more than a slave,

  77. as a beloved brother.

  78. See, Christianity breaks down those boundaries,

  79. and says we're all equal,

  80. we're all on the same level before God.

  81. And the Apostle Paul's great Christian manifesto,

  82. his epistle to the Romans,

  83. it also contains some boundary-breaking declarations.

  84. From Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  85. I'll read a few verses from Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  86. What then?

  87. Are Jews any better off?

  88. Not at all.

  89. For we've already charged that,

  90. that all,

  91. both Jews and Gentiles,

  92. are under sin.

  93. But there's no distinction,

  94. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  95. and are justified by his grace as a gift,

  96. through the redemption that's in Christ Jesus.

  97. Then what becomes of boasting?

  98. It's excluded.

  99. For we hold that one is justified by faith,

  100. apart from the works of the law,

  101. or is God the God of the Jews only?

  102. Is he not the God of the Gentiles also?

  103. Yes, of Gentiles also,

  104. since God is one who will circumcise the justified by faith,

  105. I'm sorry,

  106. who will justify the circumcised by faith,

  107. who will justify the circumcised by faith,

  108. and the uncircumcised through faith.

  109. The Apostle Paul tore down the law of Moses

  110. as a boundary separating Jew and Gentile

  111. by demonstrating that no one's justified

  112. by works of the law.

  113. We're all in the same boat.

  114. We're all sinners condemned by the law,

  115. and yet justified freely by faith in Christ.

  116. Now, against that backdrop,

  117. I want to suggest that Romans 8 verse 4

    Romans 8:4

  118. comes as a great surprise.

  119. Romans 8 verse 4 comes as a great surprise.

    Romans 8:4

  120. Both halves of the verse are surprising.

  121. Let's look at this verse, Romans 8 verse 4.

    Romans 8:4

  122. In order that the righteous requirement of the law

  123. might be fulfilled in us

  124. who walk not according to the flesh,

  125. but according to the spirit.

  126. Both halves of this verse are surprising.

  127. It's surprising that,

  128. having stated so emphatically

  129. that none of us are able to obey the law,

  130. Paul now speaks of the righteous requirement

  131. of the law being fulfilled in us.

  132. Now, as I mentioned last week,

  133. it's possible this statement is about imputed righteousness.

  134. That is, it's possible this statement is about

  135. how the law's demand for righteousness

  136. is satisfied for us

  137. by the perfect righteousness of Christ

  138. being credited to our account.

  139. Now, that is wonderful.

  140. It's certainly true.

  141. And it's a cause of great assurance.

  142. But verse 4 is especially surprising

  143. if, as I suggested last week,

  144. what this statement might mean

  145. that the righteous requirement of the law

  146. is fulfilled in us

  147. is that the law's overall purpose of love

  148. comes to be expressed and fulfilled

  149. in the lives of Christians.

  150. How is it possible that people

  151. who have once been condemned by the law

  152. because of our sins

  153. might now fulfil the law through love?

  154. Isn't that claim hopelessly optimistic?

  155. Well, Jesus didn't think so.

  156. By this, all people will know

  157. that you're my disciples, Jesus said,

  158. if you have love for one another.

  159. But that's surprising.

  160. But the second half of the verse is surprising too

  161. because in the second half of the verse 4,

  162. having so emphatically broken down the law

  163. as a boundary dividing Jew and Gentile

  164. for all alike are under sin,

  165. in the second half of verse 4,

  166. another great division in humanity is established.

  167. There are those who walk according to the flesh

  168. and there are those who walk according to the spirit.

  169. See, it turns out, in the Bible's view,

  170. there is a great division in humanity.

  171. But it's not the divide between Jew and Gentile.

  172. It's not the divide between slave and free.

  173. It's not between law and not law.

  174. The division is between flesh and spirit.

  175. And it's this division

  176. which explains how it is

  177. that the righteous requirement of the law

  178. might be fulfilled in believers.

  179. Verse 5 and 6.

  180. In these verses, flesh and spirit represent two opposing dominions,

  181. to realms, to powers, to spheres of influence,

  182. to opposing dominions,

  183. someone can walk according to the flesh

  184. and be according to the flesh

  185. or they can walk and be according to the spirit.

  186. Every one of us belongs to one or other of those dominions.

  187. We either belong to the flesh or we belong to the spirit.

  188. One or the other is the sphere

  189. in which we exist and operate.

  190. One or the other is the power which defines our lives.

  191. Now, incidentally, this is an aside here,

  192. the word spirit occurs 17 times in Romans,

  193. the first 17 verses of Romans 8,

    Romans 8:1–7

  194. verses 1 to 7.

  195. It's 17 times,

  196. which makes it not just the greatest concentration

  197. of spirit language in Romans,

  198. it's the greatest concentration of spirit language

  199. anywhere in the Bible.

  200. What we have here is a passage that is describing to us,

  201. teaching us about life in the spirit.

  202. And each dominion, flesh and spirit,

  203. has its own mindset.

  204. There is a mind set on the things of the flesh

  205. and there is the mind set on things of the spirit.

  206. And those two mindsets are completely different.

  207. Let me suggest three differences.

  208. First difference,

  209. the mind set on the flesh is earthbound,

  210. whereas the mind set on the spirit is heavenly,

  211. transcendent.

  212. The mind of the flesh is occupied with things here below

  213. and either denies or at least disregards heaven above.

  214. You found the mind set of the flesh

  215. whenever you find someone who is consumed by money.

  216. They live for,

  217. they pursue,

  218. what they want is possessions and money and wealth.

  219. I was running with a friend,

  220. I just met the friend,

  221. a Christian brother,

  222. he was,

  223. he is,

  224. and he was talking about someone in his family

  225. who just spends most of his day just examining,

  226. just watching his share portfolio.

  227. That's what's on his mind all the time,

  228. money.

  229. You found the mind set of the flesh

  230. when you find someone consumed by their career.

  231. All they think about is how they can advance

  232. and that getting to the next step in their profession.

  233. Or someone consumed by entertainment,

  234. they just think about the movies or the music

  235. or the video games or whatever it is

  236. that just occupies their thoughts constantly.

  237. Or by pleasure or by body image or by reputation,

  238. whatever it is.

  239. When it's just their thoughts,

  240. their thinking,

  241. their preoccupation

  242. is with

  243. things of earth below.

  244. Now,

  245. God created all things good.

  246. Everything that God has made in this world is good

  247. and to be received with thanksgiving.

  248. But he created everything good so that we might lift our eyes

  249. from the gifts while enjoying the gifts he's given

  250. to the giver,

  251. the God himself who has given them.

  252. Not so that we'd enjoy the gift and ignore the giver.

  253. One of the sports I've enjoyed is playing ultimate frisbee.

  254. And I love playing frisbee.

  255. If you don't know the sports,

  256. it's a lot of running, a lot of jumping,

  257. throwing a frisbee around,

  258. trying to catch it and pass it between your teammates.

  259. An energetic sport.

  260. And I've had opportunity to sort of play in clubs and so on

  261. with some of the players in Newcastle

  262. who are like the top players in Newcastle.

  263. Some of them have played for Australia and so on.

  264. And I mean,

  265. there are people who live for ultimate frisbee.

  266. You know,

  267. that's what their life's about.

  268. And that's all their ambitions,

  269. all their goals revolve around that sport.

  270. It's not even in the Olympics.

  271. Right?

  272. You know,

  273. I mean,

  274. maybe there's a few American players that earn a living,

  275. get sponsorship off it,

  276. but you're not going to do that in Australia.

  277. And yet that's what their life's for.

  278. That's the mind of the flesh.

  279. It's just fixed on something,

  280. whatever it is here below.

  281. With no regard for God above.

  282. Second difference,

  283. that the mindset of the flesh,

  284. likewise the gaze of the flesh,

  285. is fixed here and now.

  286. It never looks forward.

  287. Just the present,

  288. never the future,

  289. or never the eternal future,

  290. in any case.

  291. The mind of the flesh forgets

  292. that there is a day of judgment.

  293. That people will render account,

  294. will give an account,

  295. for the lives we've lived here.

  296. The mind of the flesh forgets

  297. that there's a resurrection,

  298. that there is a life beyond the grave.

  299. The mind of the flesh forgets

  300. that there is a coming kingdom of God.

  301. No,

  302. the way things are now,

  303. in the mind of the flesh,

  304. is the way things will always be.

  305. Temporary,

  306. rather than eternal.

  307. That's the second difference.

  308. The third difference is that the mind of the flesh,

  309. there's a difference of character.

  310. A difference of character.

  311. Paul writes in Galatians that the fruit of the spirit is love,

  312. joy,

  313. peace,

  314. patience,

  315. kindness,

  316. goodness,

  317. faithfulness,

  318. gentleness,

  319. self-control.

  320. Whereas the flesh,

  321. well, the flesh is filled with anger,

  322. jealousy,

  323. impurity,

  324. greed,

  325. malice,

  326. hatred,

  327. selfish ambition.

  328. There's a difference in character between flesh and spirit.

  329. The example from the previous chapter of the flesh,

  330. of the sin operating in our lives is coveting.

  331. You might remember Paul talked about when,

  332. as soon as he hears the law,

  333. you shall not covet.

  334. Sin arouses all kinds of covetous desires within him.

  335. There's a difference of character.

  336. So there's a different mind.

  337. Each of these dominions,

  338. spirit and flesh,

  339. has a different mind.

  340. And each also has its own destiny.

  341. You'll see there in verse 6,

  342. to set the mind on the flesh is death.

  343. That's the destiny of the flesh,

  344. death.

  345. But to set the mind on the spirit is life and peace.

  346. There's the destiny of those who are in the spirit.

  347. Life and peace.

  348. Peace with God, that is.

  349. So two dominions,

  350. two minds,

  351. two destinies.

  352. And in verses 7 and 8,

  353. Paul goes on to unpack a bit more

  354. the mind of the flesh,

  355. what it's like to live under the power of the flesh.

  356. Verse 7,

  357. for the mind that's set on the flesh is hostile to God,

  358. for it does not submit to God's law.

  359. Indeed,

  360. it cannot.

  361. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  362. The mind of the flesh is in enmity to God.

  363. This is the opposite of the peace of the mind of the spirit there in verse 6.

  364. Here there's enmity,

  365. there's hostility.

  366. And these verses 7 and 8 unpack that enmity,

  367. which is the reason that there's death.

  368. Hostility towards God.

  369. Not only this refusal to submit to God's law,

  370. but an inability to submit to God's law.

  371. I hate God,

  372. and I disregard God.

  373. They're equally expressions of the flesh.

  374. They're equally hostility towards God.

  375. God,

  376. God,

  377. it's just,

  378. God,

  379. I won't submit to you.

  380. I won't listen to you.

  381. I don't care for what you want.

  382. Those who are in the flesh,

  383. verse 8,

  384. cannot please God.

  385. Now that sounds extreme,

  386. doesn't it?

  387. Someone who's in the flesh

  388. can't please God.

  389. Few people would think of themselves in these kind of terms.

  390. This isn't how people think about themselves.

  391. But that's because people have so thoroughly expunged the idea of God from their thoughts

  392. that they don't think there's any need to please God.

  393. They imagine they can live lives that are good without God.

  394. But that's madness.

  395. People who live according to the flesh,

  396. who are just bound by the things of this world,

  397. and of the present,

  398. and of the attitudes and desires of the flesh,

  399. people who live that way,

  400. they may go on to do all sorts of impressive and noteworthy things.

  401. But a car's not a good car

  402. if it doesn't go where the driver steers it.

  403. And a dog's not a good pet if it bites its master

  404. and doesn't come when called and go when sent.

  405. And humans aren't good humans when we ignore our creator.

  406. Without faith, it's impossible to please God.

  407. And that's the mind of the flesh.

  408. Hostility to God.

  409. Disregarding God.

  410. But then Paul says,

  411. in verse 9,

  412. you, however,

  413. you, however, are not in the flesh,

  414. but in the spirit.

  415. If, in fact,

  416. the spirit of God dwells in you.

  417. Anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ

  418. does not belong to him.

  419. Let's unpack this a little bit.

  420. You, however,

  421. Paul is convinced that those he's writing to

  422. are not in the flesh,

  423. but in the spirit.

  424. He makes a contrast here.

  425. You, however,

  426. are not in the flesh,

  427. but in the spirit.

  428. You don't belong to the dominion of the flesh.

  429. You belong to the dominion of the spirit.

  430. The power of the flesh does not dominate your life.

  431. Rather,

  432. you are controlled and governed and ruled

  433. by the power of God's spirit.

  434. You, however,

  435. are not in the flesh,

  436. but in the spirit,

  437. if, in fact,

  438. the spirit of God dwells in you.

  439. Now,

  440. that sounds a bit uncertain in our ears

  441. as we read it.

  442. No,

  443. like Paul's saying,

  444. well,

  445. you belong with the spirit.

  446. If the spirit dwells in you.

  447. You know,

  448. maybe the spirit dwells in you.

  449. Maybe the spirit doesn't dwell in you.

  450. But I don't think it's supposed to sound uncertain,

  451. actually.

  452. I don't think it's supposed to sound uncertain here.

  453. The word,

  454. the Greek word that's translated as,

  455. if,

  456. in fact,

  457. it can also be translated as,

  458. since,

  459. which is exactly how ESV translates it

  460. in Romans 3,

    Romans 3:30

  461. verse 30,

  462. which I read a little bit earlier.

  463. There it is.

  464. Yes,

  465. God is the God of the Gentiles,

  466. also,

  467. since God is one.

  468. You know,

  469. there are points being made.

  470. God's not just the God of the Jews.

  471. He's the God of Jews and Gentiles.

  472. He's the God of all people.

  473. Because God's one,

  474. there's one God.

  475. They're the same word as translated as since.

  476. And I think it's got that sense here too.

  477. You know,

  478. it's sort of context

  479. that determines

  480. whether we should translate this word

  481. as if indeed,

  482. or since indeed.

  483. And one thing you notice here

  484. is that when Paul switches,

  485. like from verse 8 to verse 9,

  486. he switches from speaking in the third person

  487. to the second person.

  488. So verses 5 and 6,

  489. he sets up the two categories,

  490. flesh and spirit.

  491. Verses 7 and 8,

  492. he then elaborates on the flesh

  493. in the third person,

  494. that is speaking about they,

  495. them,

  496. those people

  497. who are in the flesh.

  498. But then verses 9 to 11,

  499. as he elaborates on the spirit,

  500. he switches to the second person,

  501. you.

  502. He speaks about those

  503. who are in the flesh,

  504. but you who are in the spirit.

  505. So Paul,

  506. as he's addressing the Roman Christians

  507. to whom he's writing,

  508. he's not trying to make them

  509. kind of wonder

  510. whether they might be in the spirit.

  511. He is assuring them

  512. that they are in the spirit.

  513. Since the spirit of God dwells in you,

  514. Paul says.

  515. And he reinforces that assurance

  516. with the negative

  517. at the end of verse 8,

  518. anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ

  519. does not belong to Christ.

  520. To put that around the other way,

  521. if you do belong to Christ,

  522. then you do have the spirit of Christ.

  523. If anyone who doesn't have the spirit

  524. doesn't belong to Christ,

  525. then if you do belong to Christ,

  526. you must have the spirit.

  527. It's impossible to belong to Christ

  528. and not have the spirit dwelling in you.

  529. There are no spiritless Christians.

  530. If you have Jesus,

  531. you have God's spirit.

  532. It's both or nothing.

  533. Or rather,

  534. it's all three persons of the Trinity

  535. or nothing.

  536. For in verse 9,

  537. he's both the spirit of Christ

  538. and the spirit of God.

  539. To have the spirit

  540. is to be united

  541. with the Father and the Son.

  542. And Paul reassures

  543. the Roman Christians here

  544. of their present union

  545. with God's spirit.

  546. That God's spirit

  547. indwells in them.

  548. And notice how he convinces them.

  549. He doesn't call on them

  550. to analyse their performance.

  551. He doesn't tell them

  552. to conduct an experiment.

  553. He doesn't say,

  554. you have the spirit in you

  555. if you can speak in tongues.

  556. He doesn't say,

  557. you have the spirit in you

  558. if you've attained

  559. a certain level of holiness

  560. or godliness.

  561. The thrust of verses 9 to 10

  562. is if you have Christ,

  563. you have the spirit.

  564. The spirit is the present possession

  565. of every single Christian.

  566. Now you might feel yourself

  567. to be unspiritual.

  568. You might think

  569. there's nothing special

  570. about you.

  571. You might feel like

  572. sin has the upper hand

  573. in your life.

  574. But God doesn't justify you

  575. on the basis

  576. of your own goodness.

  577. God doesn't justify you

  578. on the basis

  579. of your moral achievement.

  580. and neither does

  581. God's spirit

  582. indwell you

  583. on the basis

  584. of your goodness.

  585. The spirit comes to us

  586. as Christ comes to us

  587. on the basis

  588. of God's abundant grace

  589. and infinite mercy.

  590. So brothers,

  591. sisters,

  592. you don't need to worry

  593. that you haven't received

  594. God's spirit.

  595. Receiving God's spirit

  596. isn't a separate,

  597. additional step

  598. after receiving Christ.

  599. We received Christ,

  600. the spirit,

  601. when we received Christ.

  602. If you belong to Christ,

  603. if you believe in Jesus,

  604. if you're one of Jesus' followers,

  605. you have God's spirit

  606. dwelling in you.

  607. And verses 10 and 11

  608. go on to two

  609. inestimable benefits

  610. of being indwelt

  611. by God's spirit.

  612. first,

  613. Paul speaks of present

  614. spiritual life

  615. in verse 10.

  616. But if Christ

  617. is in you,

  618. although the body

  619. is dead

  620. because of sin,

  621. the spirit

  622. is life

  623. because of righteousness.

  624. Now,

  625. I enjoy

  626. frisbee,

  627. I enjoy running,

  628. I've mentioned both

  629. already.

  630. I try to keep myself

  631. in pretty decent

  632. physical condition,

  633. but the clock

  634. keeps ticking.

  635. I remember

  636. as a,

  637. I think it was like

  638. as a late teenager

  639. sitting down

  640. with my godfather

  641. and I was a young man

  642. and I was a bit aimless

  643. in life

  644. and I remember him

  645. asking me like,

  646. what was my goal

  647. in life?

  648. Like,

  649. what did I want

  650. to achieve?

  651. And the only thing

  652. I came up with

  653. that I wanted

  654. to run 800 metres

  655. faster than two minutes.

  656. Like,

  657. now,

  658. running 800 metres,

  659. let me just be clear,

  660. faster than two minutes,

  661. yeah,

  662. that'd be pretty quick,

  663. but that's not even

  664. going to get you

  665. into the Olympics,

  666. right?

  667. It's not that quick.

  668. But that was my goal,

  669. right?

  670. That's all I could

  671. come up with

  672. at that point in time.

  673. And,

  674. it's a pretty pathetic goal

  675. and,

  676. you know,

  677. I'm happy to say

  678. I've discovered

  679. some better goals since.

  680. You know,

  681. but still,

  682. I would kind of like

  683. to run 800 metres

  684. that fast

  685. and yet it's not

  686. going to happen,

  687. right?

  688. I've missed my opportunity

  689. and it's not just

  690. because I've got

  691. other priorities in life,

  692. it's also just because

  693. I keep getting older.

  694. It's just the effects

  695. of age setting in.

  696. First,

  697. it was my knees

  698. and then it was

  699. my hamstrings

  700. and then it's

  701. my Achilles

  702. and what's going

  703. to be next?

  704. I don't know

  705. what's going

  706. to be next,

  707. but,

  708. you know,

  709. I've reached the age

  710. that whenever I

  711. book an appointment

  712. to see my GP,

  713. I make sure I book

  714. a double appointment

  715. because I've never

  716. got just one thing

  717. I need to talk about.

  718. But still,

  719. like,

  720. I'm only 47,

  721. right?

  722. And,

  723. I'm healthy

  724. and God willing,

  725. I have many more years

  726. of decline ahead of me.

  727. but,

  728. you know,

  729. even though my body

  730. is dead

  731. or dying,

  732. right,

  733. you know,

  734. whichever word

  735. you want to use,

  736. there is dwelling

  737. in me

  738. the Spirit

  739. who gives life.

  740. The Spirit

  741. who gives life.

  742. As Paul says

  743. elsewhere,

  744. outwardly we're

  745. wasting away,

  746. but inwardly

  747. we're being

  748. renewed

  749. day by day.

  750. And this means,

  751. verse 10 means here,

  752. that the 95-year-old

  753. invalid

  754. who is

  755. bed-bound

  756. in a nursing home

  757. but has the

  758. Spirit of God

  759. dwelling in them,

  760. that person

  761. has more life

  762. than the 23-year-old

  763. Olympia.

  764. the Spirit

  765. who gives life

  766. is dwelling

  767. in them.

  768. Present

  769. spiritual life

  770. is the first

  771. benefit

  772. of the Spirit.

  773. The second benefit

  774. is in verse 11,

  775. verse 10 speaks

  776. of present

  777. spiritual life,

  778. verse 11 speaks

  779. of future

  780. bodily life.

  781. Verse 11,

  782. if the Spirit

  783. of Him

  784. who raised

  785. Jesus from the dead

  786. dwells in you,

  787. He who raised

  788. Christ Jesus

  789. from the dead

  790. will also

  791. give life

  792. to your

  793. mortal bodies

  794. through His

  795. Spirit

  796. who dwells

  797. in you.

  798. Now just notice

  799. how beautifully

  800. Trinitarian

  801. this verse is.

  802. We see twice

  803. right there

  804. in this verse

  805. we have

  806. the Father,

  807. the Spirit

  808. and the Son.

  809. The Spirit

  810. of Him

  811. who raised

  812. Jesus,

  813. the Father

  814. who raised

  815. Jesus,

  816. Jesus the Son

  817. from the dead

  818. the Trinity

  819. and then we

  820. get it again.

  821. He who raised

  822. Christ as the

  823. Father who raised

  824. the Son

  825. from the dead

  826. will give life

  827. to your mortal

  828. bodies

  829. through His

  830. Spirit

  831. who dwells

  832. in you.

  833. This is the

  834. Trinity again.

  835. The Father,

  836. the Spirit

  837. and the Son

  838. working together

  839. to do what?

  840. With what goal?

  841. With what effect?

  842. With what outcome?

  843. To give life

  844. to your mortal

  845. bodies.

  846. Paul is

  847. speaking of

  848. the future

  849. bodily

  850. resurrection

  851. of beliefs.

  852. Bodily

  853. resurrection.

  854. The resurrection

  855. of Jesus

  856. from the dead,

  857. bodily from the

  858. grave,

  859. that's the

  860. pattern for

  861. us,

  862. the pattern

  863. for our

  864. future.

  865. He's the

  866. first fruits,

  867. where the

  868. harvest that

  869. is to come.

  870. What God

  871. has already

  872. done in the

  873. case of

  874. Jesus,

  875. He will

  876. do in the

  877. case of

  878. everyone who

  879. belongs to

  880. Jesus,

  881. through His

  882. Spirit who

  883. dwells in.

  884. So if you

  885. have God's

  886. Spirit in

  887. you,

  888. and you

  889. have God's

  890. Spirit if

  891. you believe

  892. in Jesus,

  893. then as

  894. your body

  895. fails and

  896. wastes away,

  897. what a hope

  898. we have

  899. that God

  900. will restore,

  901. God will

  902. raise up,

  903. God will

  904. bring life.

  905. Everything

  906. God's created

  907. is good and

  908. that includes

  909. our bodies.

  910. and it's

  911. not God's

  912. will that

  913. our bodies

  914. should rot

  915. in the

  916. ground and

  917. just our

  918. spirits depart

  919. to heaven and

  920. that's our

  921. eternal future,

  922. but rather that

  923. spirit and body

  924. be reunited and

  925. He raise us up

  926. in perishable

  927. and in glory

  928. as Jesus has

  929. been raised.

  930. Future bodily

  931. life,

  932. life now

  933. in God's

  934. Spirit and

  935. a future where

  936. even our bodies,

  937. though they perish

  938. and die,

  939. will be raised

  940. from the dead.

  941. Why is it

  942. that we have,

  943. I mean we've

  944. seen two

  945. dominions,

  946. two minds,

  947. two destinies,

  948. why is it

  949. that we have

  950. a different

  951. destiny?

  952. Because we

  953. have a different

  954. dominion,

  955. because it

  956. is the

  957. Spirit dwelling

  958. in us

  959. who determines,

  960. by God,

  961. who determines

  962. our future.

  963. And why is it

  964. that the

  965. righteous

  966. requirement of

  967. the law

  968. might be

  969. fulfilled in

  970. us?

  971. Because we

  972. live under a

  973. different dominion.

  974. We have the

  975. mind of God's

  976. Spirit dwelling

  977. in us,

  978. a mind that

  979. is life and

  980. peace,

  981. a mind of

  982. God's Spirit

  983. dwelling in us,

  984. enabling the

  985. renewing of

  986. our minds,

  987. which Paul will

  988. speak of in

  989. Romans 12.

  990. Don't be

  991. conformed to

  992. this world,

  993. but be

  994. transformed by

  995. the renewal

  996. of your

  997. mind,

  998. that you

  999. may discern

  1000. what is the

  1001. will of

  1002. God,

  1003. what is good

  1004. and acceptable

  1005. and perfect.

  1006. Now if you

  1007. feel,

  1008. if you feel

  1009. yourself trapped

  1010. in patterns of

  1011. thought that

  1012. belong not to

  1013. the Spirit but

  1014. to the flesh,

  1015. feel trapped

  1016. in those patterns.

  1017. I want you

  1018. to know,

  1019. God wants us

  1020. to know,

  1021. there is hope,

  1022. there is

  1023. freedom.

  1024. If you're

  1025. a greedy

  1026. person and

  1027. you find

  1028. yourself just

  1029. always wanting

  1030. more for

  1031. yourself,

  1032. you don't

  1033. need to be

  1034. that.

  1035. you don't

  1036. have to keep

  1037. living that

  1038. way.

  1039. You can

  1040. let it

  1041. go.

  1042. God's

  1043. Spirit dwells

  1044. in you and

  1045. he desires

  1046. something else.

  1047. If you're an

  1048. angry person,

  1049. if you're,

  1050. you know,

  1051. you're just,

  1052. there's a,

  1053. there's an

  1054. anger in you

  1055. that's just

  1056. always there

  1057. sort of below

  1058. the surface,

  1059. seething away.

  1060. every now

  1061. and then

  1062. it erupts.

  1063. You don't

  1064. need to hold

  1065. on to that,

  1066. whatever it

  1067. is that's

  1068. causing that

  1069. anger.

  1070. You can

  1071. let it

  1072. go.

  1073. Those

  1074. things,

  1075. greed,

  1076. anger,

  1077. impurity,

  1078. whatever the

  1079. pattern of

  1080. thought is

  1081. that you're

  1082. stuck in,

  1083. it belongs

  1084. to the

  1085. flesh.

  1086. But you,

  1087. you belong

  1088. to the

  1089. Spirit.

  1090. You belong

  1091. to the

  1092. Spirit.

  1093. So,

  1094. live

  1095. in the

  1096. freedom

  1097. of the

  1098. Spirit of

  1099. God.

  1100. Let's

  1101. pray.

  1102. Heavenly

  1103. Father,

  1104. we thank

  1105. you that

  1106. when we

  1107. believe and

  1108. when we

  1109. have

  1110. believed in

  1111. your

  1112. Son,

  1113. Jesus,

  1114. you've

  1115. not only

  1116. forgiven

  1117. us all

  1118. our sins

  1119. and justified

  1120. us,

  1121. counted us

  1122. as righteous,

  1123. but you've

  1124. come to

  1125. live in

  1126. us in

  1127. the person

  1128. of your

  1129. Spirit.

  1130. You've

  1131. united us

  1132. with

  1133. yourself,

  1134. with your

  1135. Son.

  1136. Thank you

  1137. for your

  1138. Spirit

  1139. already

  1140. dwelling

  1141. in us

  1142. and with

  1143. us,

  1144. filling

  1145. us with

  1146. spiritual

  1147. life.

  1148. Thank you

  1149. for the

  1150. mind of

  1151. the

  1152. Spirit

  1153. dwelling

  1154. in us,

  1155. that he

  1156. can

  1157. transform

  1158. our

  1159. minds.

  1160. Thank you

  1161. that you,

  1162. by your

  1163. Spirit,

  1164. can free

  1165. us from

  1166. every

  1167. pattern of

  1168. thought and

  1169. behaviour that

  1170. belongs to

  1171. the flesh.

  1172. so please

  1173. Lord God,

  1174. continue that

  1175. good work

  1176. in us.

  1177. Change

  1178. our minds,

  1179. transform

  1180. us so

  1181. that we

  1182. might

  1183. desire

  1184. what

  1185. brings you

  1186. delight.

  1187. Assure it

  1188. wholeheartedly.

  1189. In Jesus'

  1190. name.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. Amen.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.

  1197. Amen.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Amen.

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Amen.

  1203. Amen.

  1204. Amen.

  1205. Amen.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.

  1208. Amen.

  1209. Amen.

  1210. Amen.

  1211. Amen.
