  1. We're reading from two passages today.

  2. So the first one is Acts chapter 6, verses 1 to 7.

    Acts 6:1–7

  3. Now in these days, when the disciples were increasing in number,

  4. a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews

  5. because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  6. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  7. it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  8. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

  9. full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.

  10. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

  11. And what they said pleased the whole gathering,

  12. and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

  13. and Philip of Prochorus and Nicanor, and Timon of Parmenas,

  14. and Nicolaus of the proselyte of Antioch.

  15. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

  16. And the word of God continued to increase,

  17. and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem,

  18. and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

  19. And then we're moving to 1 Timothy, chapter 3, verses 8 to 16.

    1 Timothy 3:8–16

  20. Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,

  21. not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.

  22. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience,

  23. and let them also be tested first,

  24. then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.

  25. Their wives likewise must be dignified,

  26. not slanderers but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

  27. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife,

  28. managing their children and their own households well.

  29. For those who serve well as deacons gain good standing for themselves,

  30. and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

  31. I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you

  32. so that if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God,

  33. which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.

  34. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness.

  35. He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit,

  36. seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations,

  37. believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

  38. I see a few strangers in the second row.

  39. Welcome, Corderwoods.

  40. Great to have you with us.

  41. Will you pray with me?

  42. My name's Dave.

  43. I'm one of the pastors here.

  44. If you're new this morning, it's great that you're here,

  45. and I'd love to meet you after the service.

  46. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  47. Let's pray.

  48. Father, as we come to a topic about authority,

  49. since the fall, each of us have a reaction against any authority above us.

  50. And so I pray that your word would breathe more life into us

  51. so that we might see the beauty of your authority

  52. and reflect that beauty in how we operate as a church.

  53. So I pray this in Jesus' name.

  54. Amen.

  55. Well, blessed are the cheesemakers.

  56. Some people, if Andrew Jones is here, it's good news for you.

  57. He's a cheesemaker.

  58. Now, those who know that's a Monty Python quote,

  59. and I was watching a Monty Python interview,

  60. and many of the cast were saying that they were influenced by the goons,

  61. which that's before my time, but a radio show.

  62. And I found it interesting that what each of the members of Monty Python

  63. were attracted to in the goons,

  64. one thing especially was that they poked fun at authority,

  65. which was very new for the time.

  66. Now, poking fun at authority is pretty common now, isn't it?

  67. And Monty Python, like that quote,

  68. they're willing to poke fun at Christ.

  69. They pushed it to another level.

  70. Watching that, it just bursts any notion that troubles with submitting to authority,

  71. it's not new in our age, is it?

  72. It's always been around.

  73. But there seems to be widespread suspicion, right, don't you find,

  74. of any authority unless you're the one in it?

  75. There's suspicion of any authority above us.

  76. So we're going to be spending time this morning looking at the topic of deacons

  77. and who are those whom God calls us to identify and gladly submit to.

  78. This is an area where we're called to be different from the world,

  79. to be a light to the world, a winsome light

  80. in who is in authority and in submitting to authority.

  81. Now, I briefly want to clarify why are we pausing Acts

  82. to look at 1 Timothy 3?

  83. Why are we stopping our series in Acts?

  84. Well, we're not quite stopping.

  85. We're pausing and going deeper into the passage from last week.

  86. There's three main reasons.

  87. First is that the elders believe it is a priority to expand the diaconate soon.

  88. Paul and Alex have been deacons for 10 years, faithfully now,

  89. and we just think it would be wise to expand that team

  90. to be able to achieve more.

  91. Paul and Alex can't carry it all on their own,

  92. so we think it would be a wise thing to do.

  93. The second reason we want to pause and look at this

  94. is we're about to distribute the Constitution,

  95. and that's all about how the church is going to be structured.

  96. And a significant section of that is on leaders,

  97. so it seems worthwhile pausing to prepare for that as well.

  98. And the third reason is to demonstrate how we can,

  99. in the book of Acts,

  100. we can glean implications that we are to follow today.

  101. I said last week that talking about deacons isn't Luke's primary purpose.

  102. That wasn't his purpose, primary purpose,

  103. but it seems probable that he gave us these details,

  104. some of which we should be following the example of the early church.

  105. So that's why we do it.

  106. We want to expand the diaconate.

  107. We're about to look at the Constitution of the church family,

  108. and we need principles to govern us to understand Acts properly.

  109. So for those reasons, we're looking at 1 Timothy 3.

  110. So in Acts 6, they appoint something that looked like deacons,

  111. even though they aren't given the title of deacons.

  112. And the reason we saw was to address disunity in the church,

  113. that there was a difference in how people were relating to one another

  114. that wasn't reflecting who we really are in Jesus.

  115. But they did it in such a way that it didn't distract them

  116. from the teaching and proclamation of the word.

  117. Now, what out of that story should we be following today?

  118. How do we decide that?

  119. Is the number seven important?

  120. Is the fact we've got only two deacons a problem?

  121. Is seven necessary?

  122. Should they be men?

  123. Is their function to provide food to those in need,

  124. or as a general principle, to look after the needy, the vulnerable,

  125. widows and orphans?

  126. Who decides who to appoint deacons?

  127. Is it the leaders, the successors of the apostles,

  128. or is it the whole church deciding equally?

  129. You start asking questions, and there's way more questions than that,

  130. and you get into how do you even decide what we should learn?

  131. So here's an important principle for interpreting scripture.

  132. So use the clear to interpret the less clear.

  133. Use the explicit commands in the New Testament to interpret the narrative,

  134. which is only implied.

  135. So use the explicit to interpret the narrative.

  136. So that's why we're going to 1 Timothy 3,

  137. because the purpose of it is to talk directly about deacons.

  138. Now, as we come into 1 Timothy 3,

  139. where we're headed is we're going to look at what is the church,

  140. we're going to look at who should lead the church,

  141. and then we're going to look at what is the truth

  142. that the church is called to reflect and defend and proclaim.

  143. What was happening in the church at the time, in Timothy's time,

  144. is in chapter 1 verse 3, there's very capable people,

  145. very religious people in the church who are spreading false teaching.

  146. It was there from day one,

  147. and unbelief and false teaching is around today.

  148. It's constant.

  149. It's a constant threat on the church.

  150. So that's the context here.

  151. So if you've got these really capable religious people

  152. saying things that are wrong,

  153. how on earth do you discern who's godly or not?

  154. Who do you appoint as leaders if they seem so religious?

  155. It's a hard question.

  156. That's the point of 1 Timothy 3, to answer that.

  157. But I want to start with Paul's purpose statement

  158. in verse 15 of chapter 3.

  159. If you've got it open in front of you.

  160. He gives us why he's writing this letter.

  161. He's saying, Timothy, I may be delayed in coming to you,

  162. so I'm writing so that you know how you should conduct yourself

  163. in the household of God.

  164. Now what is the church?

  165. It's the household of God.

  166. It's the assembly of the living God.

  167. It's the pillar and foundation of the truth.

  168. What you and I think church is will have the biggest impact

  169. on how we engage with church,

  170. whether that's pleasing to God or not,

  171. is who we think we are and what we're doing.

  172. That's the biggest thing.

  173. This isn't just necessary context.

  174. This is essential.

  175. We understand this.

  176. That we are the household of God,

  177. the assembly of the living God,

  178. and we're the pillar and foundation of the truth.

  179. So I want to spend a bit of time on this.

  180. So Grace Evangelical Church,

  181. we're not a religious service provider.

  182. For people to shop around for the best product,

  183. that's not what we are.

  184. We're not a volunteer organisation

  185. uniting for a common purpose.

  186. There's elements of similarity,

  187. but it's not who we are.

  188. We're a local gathering of God's household,

  189. his family,

  190. a local gathering of it.

  191. We're not the totality of it,

  192. but we are a real local gathering of God's family.

  193. We speak in church land of pastor so-and-so's church.

  194. I get why we talk like that,

  195. but it's wrong.

  196. It's not pastor so-and-so's church.

  197. It's God's church.

  198. It's not even our church.

  199. Yes, it is.

  200. We can talk possessively.

  201. We can use that language.

  202. But ultimately,

  203. it's not the leader's church together.

  204. It's not one pastor's church.

  205. It's not even just the member's church.

  206. It's God's church.

  207. It's his family.

  208. It's his house.

  209. He is our father by virtue of the new birth

  210. of coming into this family,

  211. believing in Jesus.

  212. He's the spiritual father.

  213. We are brothers and sisters,

  214. men and women,

  215. boys and girls,

  216. equal dignity before the father.

  217. What higher privilege

  218. than belonging to the family of God?

  219. So leaders are first and foremost.

  220. We're siblings.

  221. We're siblings calling on the one father.

  222. But what enormous responsibility

  223. to care for God's family.

  224. It is a weighty responsibility.

  225. I want to make just a quick word

  226. about our discussion

  227. of the Constitution coming up.

  228. It's going to be an open discussion for all

  229. about every detail.

  230. You can comment on any detail.

  231. If you don't care about the Constitution,

  232. can I say you should?

  233. If this is the household of God

  234. for the sake of future generations,

  235. you should care.

  236. It's not the be all and end all,

  237. but you should care.

  238. So it's going to be open to discussion,

  239. but it's not a free for all.

  240. It's not like you've got your opinion,

  241. I've got mine,

  242. and we've got 200 opinions in this room.

  243. It's not a free for all.

  244. What we're trying to do

  245. is be faithful to what God says

  246. we should be structured as.

  247. That's how we're going to pursue unity

  248. if we dive deeper into what God says

  249. we should be structured as.

  250. Now we're going to have to do that in grace

  251. because there's no way

  252. we're going to agree on every sentence.

  253. But the main point I want to drive at today

  254. is it's God's household.

  255. It's his rules.

  256. We should trust him to know

  257. how to structure it best.

  258. That needs to guide us

  259. as we come to the Constitution.

  260. Okay.

  261. Let's move on.

  262. So we're the household of God,

  263. and second,

  264. we are the assembly of the living God.

  265. In the Old Testament,

  266. the Lord is described

  267. in contrast to the deadness

  268. of idols.

  269. Idols can't hear you.

  270. They can't see you.

  271. They can't save you.

  272. They cannot bless you.

  273. They're dead.

  274. But the Lord is living.

  275. He's present.

  276. God said through Moses,

  277. I will dwell among you

  278. and be your God

  279. and you will be my people.

  280. That's the point

  281. of the tabernacle and temple.

  282. Dwelling with us.

  283. He is present with his people.

  284. Israel were to be conscious

  285. that God is present in everything.

  286. How much more we?

  287. We don't have a physical temple.

  288. We're called the temple now,

  289. the church.

  290. We are the temple

  291. of the Holy Spirit,

  292. the church.

  293. How conscious we should be

  294. that the Lord is present among us.

  295. He is active among us.

  296. An isolated Christian,

  297. it's a contradiction

  298. to all Jesus' blood

  299. was given to accomplish.

  300. To be a Christian

  301. is to be assembled to Jesus

  302. and to one another.

  303. To be conscious

  304. that the living God

  305. is among us

  306. through his words

  307. of the apostles

  308. by his spirit.

  309. I think we experience

  310. this especially

  311. and why scripture

  312. puts an emphasis

  313. on the gathering,

  314. what we're doing right now.

  315. Martin Luther admitted,

  316. at home,

  317. in my own house,

  318. there is no warmth

  319. or vigour in me.

  320. But in the church,

  321. when the multitude

  322. is gathered together,

  323. a fire is kindled

  324. in my heart

  325. and it breaks

  326. its way through.

  327. It's when we're assembled

  328. that God is active

  329. in ministering to us.

  330. So are we conscious

  331. of the spirit's presence

  332. and empowering

  333. as we speak

  334. to one another

  335. over morning tea

  336. to speak into

  337. each other's lives

  338. to serve?

  339. Are you conscious of it

  340. when the Bible's read?

  341. Are you listening to that

  342. as God is here speaking?

  343. When the corporate prayer

  344. and singing,

  345. that God is inviting us

  346. into his throne room

  347. at the Lord's table

  348. which we'll share today,

  349. that the Lord is saying,

  350. come,

  351. have fellowship with me.

  352. Are we conscious of that?

  353. If we are,

  354. God,

  355. I think,

  356. will be working

  357. powerfully among us

  358. when we're conscious

  359. of that.

  360. And I think leaders,

  361. including deacons,

  362. are to lead

  363. this assembly

  364. of this consciousness

  365. that the living God

  366. is present.

  367. So we've got

  368. the family of God,

  369. we've got the assembly

  370. of the living God.

  371. And this next phrase,

  372. I remember when I was

  373. in small group

  374. like years and years ago,

  375. this phrase shocked me.

  376. I thought it must be

  377. worded wrong.

  378. The church is a pillar

  379. and buttress of the truth.

  380. Isn't it the other way around?

  381. That the truth

  382. is the pillar

  383. and buttress

  384. or foundation

  385. of the church.

  386. So buttress can be

  387. the construction people

  388. in this room

  389. are going to probably

  390. laugh at me

  391. as I try and explain this.

  392. Buttress is an external,

  393. I can't even explain,

  394. external pillar thing

  395. that holds up

  396. the walls

  397. of the building.

  398. So either it's

  399. this external support

  400. for the wall

  401. or it's talking

  402. about foundation.

  403. It's saying the church

  404. is the foundation

  405. or holding up

  406. the truth.

  407. Wow.

  408. Wow.

  409. to keep

  410. the truth

  411. steady.

  412. So yes,

  413. we're created

  414. by the truth,

  415. we're sustained

  416. by the truth,

  417. but Paul's point here

  418. is we're to keep

  419. it steady

  420. in the midst

  421. of unbelief

  422. and false teaching.

  423. We've got to

  424. hold the truth

  425. firm.

  426. Like imagine

  427. if the foundation

  428. under this auditorium

  429. started to crack

  430. and soften

  431. that there'd be

  432. nothing left

  433. to hold.

  434. Like don't you

  435. find it sad

  436. to drive past,

  437. I know buildings

  438. are whatever

  439. about church buildings,

  440. like it doesn't matter,

  441. the people

  442. of the church,

  443. but you drive

  444. past churches

  445. that used to be

  446. faithful to the gospel

  447. in Newcastle

  448. and they may as well

  449. be demolished now.

  450. They may as well

  451. be turned into cafes

  452. because the people

  453. weren't solid

  454. to the truth

  455. and so there's nothing

  456. left in it now.

  457. We're called

  458. to be steady

  459. to the truth,

  460. the foundation.

  461. Now apparently

  462. when it comes

  463. to being pillars,

  464. apparently in the

  465. temples of Artemis

  466. in Ephesus,

  467. it was one of the

  468. seven wonders

  469. of the ancient world,

  470. you've got these

  471. like a hundred

  472. huge 18 metre

  473. tall pillars

  474. and on top

  475. was this beautiful

  476. marble

  477. ceiling

  478. lifted high

  479. into the air.

  480. So I think

  481. pillar here

  482. isn't just about

  483. supporting,

  484. it's about

  485. lifting up.

  486. It's putting

  487. the beauty

  488. and wonder

  489. of the truth

  490. of the gospel

  491. and lifting it up.

  492. The church

  493. is to be a pillar

  494. for all to see.

  495. So we're the

  496. household of God,

  497. the assembly

  498. of the living God,

  499. we're a foundation

  500. and we're a pillar

  501. of the truth.

  502. I think we see

  503. these

  504. truths

  505. of who the church

  506. is in Acts 6,

  507. coming back to Acts 6

  508. for a moment.

  509. We see

  510. that

  511. the apostles

  512. treat the church

  513. as family.

  514. They are conscious

  515. that the spirit

  516. is among

  517. all God's people.

  518. I think we see

  519. that demonstrated

  520. the apostles

  521. had more authority

  522. than elders,

  523. they could have said

  524. alright,

  525. let's sort this out

  526. you lot,

  527. let us office bearers

  528. who are closer

  529. to God

  530. decide this.

  531. here's seven men

  532. submit to them.

  533. But they don't do that,

  534. they entrust

  535. the church

  536. to be spiritual,

  537. to appoint

  538. spiritual men.

  539. I think it's

  540. something of a picture

  541. of being family

  542. and it's something

  543. of a picture

  544. of they're conscious

  545. that the spirit

  546. was among them

  547. through their word,

  548. through the apostles' word.

  549. and they're united.

  550. They're united

  551. in purpose,

  552. they love

  553. the proposal

  554. given in Acts 6

  555. because

  556. it demonstrates

  557. the truth

  558. of the gospel

  559. in their relationships

  560. among the widows

  561. but it also

  562. frees up the apostle

  563. to be

  564. pillars of the truth,

  565. to keep preaching,

  566. to keep teaching.

  567. Whoever is involved

  568. in word ministry,

  569. gossiping the gospel

  570. even.

  571. So I think we see

  572. all these truths

  573. of the church

  574. in Acts 6.

  575. Okay,

  576. now we've got

  577. in our minds

  578. what the church is,

  579. let's turn to deacons.

  580. Who should lead

  581. God's household?

  582. Does being family

  583. and being spirit-filled

  584. mean that we

  585. shouldn't have leadership?

  586. Some churches

  587. try and go

  588. down that line.

  589. No,

  590. because God

  591. cares for us.

  592. He cares

  593. for the details.

  594. He's given us

  595. elders and deacons

  596. for our good

  597. because he loves us.

  598. What are their

  599. qualifications?

  600. I want to contrast

  601. this with

  602. a job advertisement

  603. in Newcastle area

  604. for a CEO.

  605. I'm not really saying

  606. that this job is wrong

  607. in its criteria.

  608. I just want to

  609. show how it's

  610. very different criteria

  611. to what God

  612. cares about

  613. for his church.

  614. So here's a job

  615. if you're looking

  616. for a CEO job.

  617. We're looking

  618. for an inspiring

  619. and passionate

  620. leader who has

  621. extensive

  622. leadership experience,

  623. significant

  624. experience in

  625. financial management,

  626. experience in

  627. growing community

  628. partnerships,

  629. tertiary

  630. qualifications

  631. and so on.

  632. There you go.

  633. There's one

  634. set of

  635. qualifications.

  636. Deacons

  637. must be

  638. dignified,

  639. not double-tongued,

  640. not addicted

  641. to much wine,

  642. not greedy

  643. for dishonest

  644. gain.

  645. They must

  646. hold the

  647. mystery of the

  648. faith with a

  649. clear conscience.

  650. Let deacons

  651. be the husband

  652. of one wife,

  653. managing their

  654. children and

  655. their own

  656. households well.

  657. It becomes

  658. really clear,

  659. doesn't it?

  660. Character

  661. is

  662. all-important.

  663. Maybe I've

  664. overstated that.

  665. Their conviction

  666. to the truth

  667. is essential

  668. in there too.

  669. The character

  670. is

  671. the emphasis.

  672. How do you

  673. identify godly

  674. leaders when

  675. you've got

  676. religious people

  677. saying things

  678. that contradict?

  679. How do you

  680. know?

  681. Because they're

  682. so word-based.

  683. In Timothy's day,

  684. they knew their

  685. Old Testament.

  686. Well, it's what

  687. our Lord said.

  688. You'll know them

  689. by their fruit.

  690. Not perfection,

  691. but evidence that

  692. the gospel is

  693. ruling their

  694. lives.

  695. They're self-controlled

  696. in their behaviour.

  697. People can respect

  698. them.

  699. They're self-controlled

  700. in their speech,

  701. and that is very

  702. difficult.

  703. Read James.

  704. They're self-controlled

  705. in their use of

  706. alcohol.

  707. And there's one

  708. that

  709. they're self-controlled

  710. in their attitude

  711. to money.

  712. I think that's a big

  713. one in our day and

  714. age that we need

  715. to take seriously.

  716. They're faithful

  717. to their wife.

  718. They take seriously

  719. their calling as

  720. spiritual leaders in

  721. the home,

  722. and they seek

  723. to be faithful.

  724. And not

  725. perfection,

  726. but they seek

  727. to be faithful.

  728. And they hold

  729. to the revealed

  730. truths of salvation

  731. in Jesus.

  732. That's what mystery

  733. is about.

  734. What once was

  735. hidden,

  736. the mystery

  737. of God's

  738. salvation,

  739. it has been

  740. revealed.

  741. The gospel

  742. reveals it.

  743. They hold to

  744. that with a

  745. clear conscience.

  746. Now,

  747. how ordinary

  748. are these

  749. qualifications?

  750. They're pretty

  751. ordinary,

  752. aren't they?

  753. They're qualities

  754. all of us should

  755. be aspiring to,

  756. every believer.

  757. I suppose you

  758. just need to

  759. change the

  760. spouse,

  761. which spouse

  762. you're faithful to.

  763. But the title

  764. of the office

  765. is ordinary.

  766. Like,

  767. it's not

  768. assistant regional

  769. manager,

  770. or assistant to

  771. the regional

  772. manager,

  773. if people know

  774. what I'm

  775. quoted,

  776. lieutenant.

  777. It's not

  778. lieutenant.

  779. It's not

  780. chief financial

  781. officer.

  782. It's servant.

  783. There's your

  784. title.

  785. I think that's

  786. ordinary.

  787. Here is the

  788. servant who will

  789. lead the church

  790. of God.

  791. A servant

  792. worthy of

  793. imitating.

  794. And yet,

  795. their criteria,

  796. I think,

  797. are extraordinary.

  798. ordinary.

  799. It's possible

  800. for your

  801. natural temperament

  802. and your

  803. upbringing to

  804. display some

  805. of these

  806. things,

  807. I think.

  808. But to be

  809. across the

  810. board of

  811. life,

  812. controlling

  813. yourself and

  814. in your

  815. family life,

  816. something's

  817. going on

  818. here.

  819. Who Jesus

  820. is and his

  821. spirit is

  822. invading this

  823. person's whole

  824. life.

  825. And the

  826. title is

  827. extraordinary

  828. because a

  829. deacon shares

  830. it with

  831. the Lord.

  832. He's described

  833. as a

  834. servant.

  835. Even the

  836. son of man

  837. did not come

  838. to be

  839. served,

  840. but to

  841. serve.

  842. That's

  843. why Jesus

  844. came,

  845. to serve,

  846. to be a

  847. deacon,

  848. if I can

  849. use that

  850. language.

  851. So it is

  852. extraordinary.

  853. So by

  854. their fruit,

  855. you will

  856. know them.

  857. What's

  858. their role?

  859. Now,

  860. this might

  861. be dissatisfying

  862. to some,

  863. but there is

  864. very,

  865. very little

  866. information in

  867. the New

  868. Testament about

  869. what their

  870. function is

  871. meant to

  872. be.

  873. Their

  874. official

  875. position

  876. suggests that

  877. they've got

  878. authority over

  879. the whole

  880. church and

  881. that they're

  882. representing the

  883. church.

  884. They have the

  885. authority to

  886. represent the

  887. church.

  888. We're told

  889. nothing of

  890. their function

  891. here except

  892. that you

  893. don't have,

  894. like you do

  895. with elders,

  896. the requirement

  897. to be able

  898. to teach.

  899. But this,

  900. I don't think

  901. we should push

  902. that too far

  903. as if deacons

  904. aren't allowed

  905. to teach.

  906. They are

  907. convicted by

  908. the gospel as

  909. much as elders.

  910. Of course

  911. they're going to

  912. be teaching

  913. by their

  914. conduct and

  915. as they have

  916. opportunity.

  917. So maybe it's

  918. best to see

  919. deacons as

  920. supporting elders

  921. in whatever the

  922. church needs at

  923. the time.

  924. That's going

  925. to be really

  926. undefined for

  927. some, but I

  928. think that's

  929. where the

  930. logic pushes

  931. us.

  932. Supporting the

  933. elders in

  934. whatever the

  935. church needs

  936. at the time.

  937. So I don't

  938. think we

  939. should let

  940. Acts 6

  941. constrain us

  942. deacons as

  943. just mercy

  944. ministries to

  945. the vulnerable.

  946. It may very

  947. well include

  948. that.

  949. But we see

  950. in Acts 6

  951. even, Stephen

  952. and Philip

  953. they're evangelists.

  954. They're the

  955. ones who push

  956. the gospel into

  957. the next

  958. frontier.

  959. So we

  960. can't restrain

  961. their function.

  962. The function

  963. of deacons in

  964. the local

  965. church, it

  966. might change

  967. over time as

  968. the needs of

  969. the church

  970. change.

  971. But what is

  972. important is

  973. that their

  974. character is

  975. stable.

  976. If you can

  977. entrust them

  978. with money,

  979. you can

  980. entrust them

  981. with whatever,

  982. kids'

  983. ministry,

  984. anything.

  985. I can't

  986. think of all

  987. the examples

  988. of the

  989. people's on

  990. the spot, but

  991. the character is

  992. what's important.

  993. You can

  994. entrust them with

  995. anything, really.

  996. And we see the

  997. principle of freeing

  998. up the elders to

  999. teach seems to be

  1000. confirmed by 1

  1001. Timothy, that elders

  1002. have the responsibility

  1003. for teaching and

  1004. governing, and deacons

  1005. support them in that,

  1006. perhaps even by

  1007. teaching themselves.

  1008. I think we

  1009. shouldn't be

  1010. dualistic here, as

  1011. if elders do the

  1012. spiritual stuff and

  1013. deacons do practical

  1014. stuff.

  1015. I think it would be a

  1016. grave mistake to get

  1017. lured in to appoint

  1018. deacons according to

  1019. their competence and

  1020. just overlook some

  1021. character problems.

  1022. Talk to Don and

  1023. others who have

  1024. been around longer

  1025. than me, that there

  1026. are churches who

  1027. believe the gospel but

  1028. who have people in

  1029. positions of authority

  1030. who, at best, they're a

  1031. hindrance, at worst,

  1032. it's political, it's

  1033. undermining the

  1034. teaching.

  1035. I think of Charles

  1036. Simeon, for seven

  1037. years, the people in

  1038. charge of, we don't

  1039. have pews with doors

1040. on the end, but they

  1041. locked the doors so

  1042. that people couldn't

  1043. come to church to

  1044. listen to him.

  1045. Let's not put doors

  1046. on there.

  1047. Other churches, a

  1048. rich person has

  1049. donated a lot and

  1050. they use that as

  1051. leverage to control

  1052. the direction of

  1053. church.

  1054. It could be just

  1055. devoting resources and

  1056. people energy to

  1057. things that aren't

  1058. primary spiritual

  1059. goals.

  1060. It could be

  1061. distraction like we

  1062. saw in Acts 6.

  1063. So I don't think we

  1064. should limit deacons to

  1065. just practical nuts and

  1066. bolts.

  1067. But I think we

  1068. should also see the

  1069. nuts and bolts as

  1070. spiritual.

  1071. There's so many

  1072. practical things that

  1073. need to happen and

  1074. when you've got gospel

1075. goals at the end, that

  1076. is a spiritual task.

1077. It enables the church to

  1078. go about its business.

  1079. How you relate to

  1080. people as you do

  1081. practical things requires

  1082. gospel mentality in

  1083. how you treat people.

  1084. So I don't think we

  1085. should limit to

  1086. practical things, but I

  1087. think we should also

  1088. see the practical

  1089. things as spiritual.

  1090. Okay, that's

  1091. function.

  1092. What about women

  1093. deacons?

  1094. It's only men in

  1095. Acts.

  1096. 1 Timothy 3 verse

    1 Timothy 3:11

  1097. 11, they're wives, but

1098. the word there is just

  1099. women.

  1100. We can't determine

  1101. this whether it's

  1102. women deacons or

  1103. wives of deacons just

  1104. based off the

  1105. wording.

1106. We've got to work it

  1107. out by context and

  1108. other reasons.

  1109. So the women,

  1110. likewise, must be

  1111. dignified, not

  1112. slanderers, but

  1113. sober-minded, faithful

  1114. in all things.

  1115. Their character must

1116. be just as proven and

  1117. trustworthy as the

  1118. deacons.

1119. So there's two camps of

  1120. interpretation here and

  1121. I'm going to dissatisfy

1122. everyone and not tell you

  1123. what I think.

1124. I'm just going to give you

  1125. the two camps and

  1126. encourage us to reflect

1127. more on it and discuss it

  1128. more.

1129. As we do that, we

1130. need to trust that God

  1131. has given this to

  1132. thrive as a family.

  1133. He hasn't spoken to

  1134. restrict, nor has he

1135. just want us to get

  1136. along with the world.

1137. He wants us to be a

  1138. light.

  1139. He wants us to

  1140. thrive.

  1141. Now I'm conscious that I

1142. have to be brief right

1143. now and so if even

  1144. asking this question is

  1145. troubling you, I'd

  1146. love to talk more.

1147. So come talk to me or

1148. one of the elders or

  1149. someone more about

  1150. this.

1151. I've got to be brief

  1152. right now.

  1153. Okay, here's the two

  1154. camps.

1155. So is it the deacons'

1156. wives or is it women

  1157. deacons?

  1158. Now, please keep in

  1159. mind, both of these

  1160. interpretations come

  1161. under people who take

  1162. what God says throughout

  1163. the whole Bible, that

1164. men are called to be

  1165. spiritual leaders in the

  1166. church and in the

  1167. home seriously.

  1168. So these two camps

  1169. come under both, have

  1170. that same conviction.

  1171. So the camp's saying

  1172. it's deacon wives.

1173. Reason is that verse 11,

  1174. it's sandwiched between

  1175. talking to the men.

1176. So it's men and then it

1177. goes back in verse 12,

  1178. deacons each be the

  1179. husband of one wife.

  1180. So it's sandwiched in

  1181. there.

1182. It seems to be fitting

1183. because it moves on to

  1184. talk about the household

  1185. of the deacon.

  1186. So addressing the deacon's

  1187. wife seems fitting.

1188. And there's no mention of

1189. the wives needing to be

  1190. faithful to their husbands,

1191. which you would expect if it

  1192. was just women's

  1193. generally, women deacons

  1194. generally.

1195. On that one, faithful in

  1196. all things, does that

  1197. include faithful?

  1198. It's all things.

  1199. Okay, that's obviously I'm

  1200. even summarising the

  1201. argument here.

1202. But the other side that

1203. no, this is talking about

  1204. women deaconesses, we

1205. might say, is that the

  1206. connection in the passage

1207. from elders to deacons in

  1208. verse 8 is deacons

  1209. likewise.

1210. And then you've got verse

  1211. 11, women likewise.

  1212. So could that connection

1213. be suggesting this is an

  1214. official office of deaconess?

  1215. There's no mention of

  1216. elders' wives.

1217. That seems a bit odd.

  1218. Like, surely an elders'

1219. wife has to be trustworthy

  1220. as well.

1221. So you've got to explain

  1222. that.

  1223. While deacons have

  1224. authority, it's only in

1225. assisting the elders and so

1226. it is obeying 1 Timothy

  1227. 2.12.

1228. And then you've got in

  1229. Romans 16 verse 1,

    Romans 16:1

1230. Phoebe is called a deacon,

  1231. a deaconess.

  1232. There you go.

  1233. How unsatisfying is that?

1234. I'm not going to tell you

1235. what I think after that.

1236. The implication of the two

1237. camps, can I just point out

  1238. the implications of it,

  1239. they're pretty close.

  1240. Because those who say

  1241. this is deacons' wives,

1242. they say the rationale is,

1243. well, if deacons are involved

  1244. in ministering to people,

1245. the wives will be, to some

  1246. extent, involved in that

  1247. service.

1248. And so the implication is,

1249. either wives were expected to

1250. be part of the deacons'

  1251. serving, or women generally.

1252. So they're not too far apart

1253. when you think about the

  1254. implications.

1255. Can I encourage us, as we get

1256. into a hot topic, let 1 Timothy

  1257. guide your interpretation of

  1258. Acts 6.

1259. The goodness of God's design for

1260. men and women is under attack

  1261. today.

1262. Timothy was under attack with

  1263. probably different problems.

1264. This is one the church is really

  1265. under pressure.

1266. How we discuss this as a church

1267. family, what convictions we come

1268. to, and some of us are going to

1269. have to submit our convictions for

1270. the sake of the unity of the church.

1271. How we go about this, I think,

1272. will depend on how we see the

  1273. church.

1274. Do we see one another as the

  1275. family of God?

1276. As the assembly of the living God?

1277. As the foundation of the truth?

1278. As the pillar of the truth?

1279. Is that what's motivating us as we

  1280. consider this?

  1281. That's when we'll move together as a

  1282. church family.

1283. All this is given for our good, so

1284. that we might reflect and defend and

  1285. declare the truth.

1286. These instructions are given in the

  1287. context of mission.

1288. Chapter 2, at the beginning of

1289. chapter 2, where all these

1290. instructions start, it speaks of God,

1291. our Saviour, who desires all people to

1292. be saved and to come to the knowledge

  1293. of the truth.

1294. And then at the end of chapter 3, we

  1295. come across this hymn.

1296. And the hymn is about mission.

1297. This is caught up in mission, which is

1298. what we're seeing in Acts.

1299. So how we appoint deacons is important

  1300. for mission.

1301. And what we see in this hymn in verse

1302. 16, and I'm not going to go through it in

  1303. detail.

1304. I just want to point out one thing as

  1305. it relates to deacons.

1306. Is that it's for the sake, Jesus came

1307. into the world to save sinners.

1308. He did it for his mission, and it was

  1309. very fleshly.

1310. He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated

  1311. by the Spirit.

1312. Here's how one preacher puts it.

1313. Christ came down to us, incarnate as a man,

1314. toiling, suffering, teaching, weeping, dying.

  1315. It's fleshly.

1316. That is what the Spirit points to as holiness.

1317. That is who the Spirit vindicated by his mighty

  1318. works and his resurrection.

  1319. It's very fleshly.

1320. That's the Christ we believe in.

1321. He did it to save us.

1322. That the Son of Man did not come to be served,

  1323. but to serve.

1324. Here is, we're going to sing the servant king

  1325. in a moment.

1326. Here is the servant king who we see in Acts

1327. is still serving his church.

1328. Why wouldn't it be a joy for our church family

1329. to appoint and submit to deacons who reflect

1330. this servant king who became flesh?

1331. It was very ordinary, but he did it to save sinners.

1332. It should be our joy to submit to deacons who consider

1333. their spiritual worship in following this ordinary king,

1334. in toiling and suffering and weeping and teaching,

  1335. even dying.

1336. So here is the gospel of the household of God,

1337. this Christ who is very ordinary,

1338. but his service to save sinners is what God welcomes

1339. and says, yes, that is holiness.

1340. Not separating from the world, but entering it.

1341. This is the gospel that has brought us into the family.

1342. This is the gospel that, this is the one who's still alive

1343. in this church family and he's among us by his word

  1344. and spirit.

1345. This is the one we are called to reflect as we appoint deacons

1346. and so that we can keep proclaiming him to the ends

  1347. of the world.

1348. Well, why don't you pray with me?

  1349. Let's pray.

1350. Well, Father, I want to pray again that you would help us

1351. to be a light as a church family into a society that really

1352. despises even authority and is very suspicious.

1353. Lord, thank you that you use your authority to serve,

1354. that you lay down your life to give us life.

1355. Father, I pray that you would move us as a church family

1356. to appoint leaders that are gripped by this Jesus

1357. so that they will defend this gospel and lead this church

1358. in serving like the Lord Jesus so that we might be a witness

  1359. to the nations.

1360. Father, yeah, please use us as a light.

  1361. In Jesus' name, amen.
