  1. Hi, everyone. So we're reading from Acts chapter 8 verses 1 to 25. I'll just give you a quick

    Acts 8:1–25

  2. overview of chapter 7 because it gets straight into 8. So Stephen was taken in front of the

  3. Sanhedrin. He told them some hard truths and they didn't like it, so they stoned him and

  4. killed him. And there was a young man named Saul. Chapter 8. And Saul approved of his execution.

  5. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem. And they were

  6. all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried

  7. Stephen and made great lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church and entering house

  8. after house. He dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Now those who were

  9. scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed

  10. to them the Christ. And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip

  11. when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For unclean spirits crying out with a loud voice

  12. came out of many who had them. And many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much

  13. joy in that city. But there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and

  14. amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. They all paid attention to him

  15. from the least to the greatest, saying, this man is the power of God that is called great.

  16. And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic.

  17. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus

  18. Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Even Simon himself believed. And after being baptized,

  19. he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.

  20. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God,

  21. they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy

  22. Spirit. For he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the

  23. Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. Now when Simon saw that

  24. the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, saying,

  25. give me this power also so that anyone whom I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.

  26. But Peter said to him, may your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift

  27. of God with money. You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God.

  28. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord. If possible, the intent of your

  29. heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.

  30. And Simon answered, pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.

  31. Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem,

  32. preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.

  33. Well, good morning, everyone.

  34. Will you pray with me as we come to God's word? Let's pray.

  35. Father, I pray that you'd teach

  36. each one of us

  37. more what it means

  38. to rejoice

  39. in the fact that our names are written in heaven.

  40. And in Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

  41. Well, what makes somebody great?

  42. Would you agree with me that in our culture, we believe someone's great mainly based on their

  43. achievements, their results?

  44. So if doctor,

  45. da-da-da-da,

  46. their qualifications,

  47. their titles,

  48. project,

  49. manager,

  50. head of

  51. whatever,

  52. we look at their money.

  53. They've got more and more stuff.

  54. Look how great they are.

  55. We look at,

  56. like,

  57. I'm obviously getting old,

  58. but I'm only mid-30s,

  59. I think,

  60. but the influences culture,

  61. the fame,

  62. the popularity,

  63. they're great

  64. because they're getting a following.

  65. They're getting results.

  66. I think we can even do it

  67. as a parent.

  68. Look at my children.

  69. We look at position and power.

  70. Aren't I great

  71. in this position,

  72. in this church?

  73. I've already hinted at the fact that we

  74. we can do it even in the church.

  75. It's achievements.

  76. Like,

  77. I was thrown last week

  78. when I had to admit publicly

  79. that it was pretty obvious

  80. that I forgot to print the bulletins.

  81. Now,

  82. you guys went home

  83. and you couldn't care less,

  84. I'm guessing,

  85. but I cared

  86. because it was just this public failure.

  87. Who cares?

  88. I know who cares.

  89. Obviously,

  90. I still care because I'm talking about it,

  91. but

  92. do you say,

  93. like,

  94. why?

  95. do I care?

  96. Because

  97. that failure,

  98. that sense of failure.

  99. We're going to see in our passage today

  100. that it is possible

  101. to put on

  102. all the church lifestyle,

  103. put on all the church lingo,

  104. you say all the things,

  105. and still be thoroughly committed

  106. to building up your own name,

  107. your own sense of greatness.

  108. I think we see that

  109. in the story of Simon.

  110. The movement of the early church,

  111. like,

  112. this is a matter of months

  113. after Jesus died

  114. and was raised.

  115. The movement,

  116. they had great achievements

  117. up until this point.

  118. The apostles were saying,

  119. Jesus is risen,

  120. he's ascended,

  121. he is the king

  122. that we've been waiting for.

  123. In the last days,

  124. the proof of that

  125. is the spirit has come

  126. on all God's people.

  127. We've seen the success

  128. of all the internal threats

  129. to the church progressing

  130. have been overcome.

  131. The hypocritical religion

  132. was stamped out.

  133. The disunity in the church

  134. was wonderfully changed,

  135. common concern for one another

  136. across cultural differences.

  137. All these internal threats,

  138. it was just success,

  139. achievement,

  140. and all these external threats

  141. of the religious leaders.

  142. The church kept growing.

  143. More numbers.

  144. They couldn't stop

  145. the converts pouring in,

  146. even among the priests.

  147. And then we get

  148. this huge failure,

  149. apparent failure.

  150. Like, is Jesus really enthroned

  151. if Stephen is crushed by rocks?

  152. What becomes of the spirit's

  153. teaching and signs

  154. through the apostles

  155. now that they are in Jerusalem

  156. and all the church is scattered?

  157. What becomes of that?

  158. All this success through apostles

  159. and now the church is scattered.

  160. What happens?

  161. The joy in the church

  162. was replaced by fear

  163. of being put in prison

  164. and great lamentation

  165. for Stephen's death.

  166. What are you doing, Lord?

  167. Well, he told us in

  168. chapter 1, verse 8,

  169. you will be my witnesses

  170. in Jerusalem

  171. and in all Judea

  172. and Samaria

  173. and to the end

  174. of the earth.

  175. This scattering

  176. that felt like God's curse

  177. was his means

  178. of blessing more people.

  179. All his people,

  180. we're told,

  181. except for the apostles,

  182. go into Judea

  183. and Samaria.

  184. And verse 4,

  185. now those who were scattered

  186. went about

  187. preaching the word.

  188. Instead of being filled

  189. with fear

  190. and just going,

  191. I'm going to keep my head down,

  192. I'm going to just live

  193. a safe life,

  194. all these believers

  195. just spoke

  196. about Jesus.

  197. Instead of just the apostles

  198. having authority

  199. to proclaim the good news,

  200. all who were scattered

  201. preached.

  202. All the believers

  203. were gossiping the gospel.

  204. And you can imagine

  205. happening.

  206. We're not told this,

  207. but you can imagine,

  208. why on earth

  209. are you here in Samaria

  210. of all places?

  211. Why are you in Judea?

  212. What's happened?

  213. What a wonderful opportunity

  214. to explain

  215. why they've been

  216. running for their lives.

  217. Because

  218. the Messiah has come.

  219. They're all just

  220. gossiping the gospel.

  221. The word preached here,

  222. don't imagine

  223. what I'm doing now.

  224. That's not the word

  225. in the Greek.

  226. It's a different word.

  227. It's just,

  228. they're just telling,

  229. they're telling the good news.

  230. It's the word we get

  231. evangelised from.

  232. So,

  233. we see that it's not

  234. just the clergy,

  235. it's not just the apostles

  236. declaring this good news anymore.

  237. It was Stephen

  238. and now Philip

  239. and it's all God's people

  240. who are declaring

  241. this good news,

  242. who have the authority

  243. to speak this good news.

  244. So,

  245. can I just

  246. encourage at this point,

  247. invite people to church

  248. to hear teaching.

  249. Go for it,

  250. do it.

  251. But,

  252. trust

  253. that God has you

  254. in the relationships,

  255. in the situations

  256. he wants you.

  257. You are best placed,

  258. not me,

  259. you are best placed

  260. to share

  261. why you've got peace

  262. and joy

  263. and hope in Jesus.

  264. I think we've got to trust

  265. that you've got the authority

  266. of God to speak.

  267. Louisa's probably going to kill me

  268. after church,

  269. but

  270. I love

  271. the example,

  272. I've been humbled

  273. by Louisa's example

  274. this week.

  275. Even

  276. sick in hospital

  277. and she,

  278. I'll just be

  279. feeling rotten

  280. in hospital,

  281. but she was

  282. seeing these ladies

  283. she got to meet

  284. and wanting to minister

  285. to them.

  286. I love that.

  287. Even

  288. in

  289. hardship,

  290. looking out

  291. for how to share

  292. the peace

  293. and hope

  294. that you've got.

  295. When the Christian

  296. missionaries

  297. were kicked out

  298. of China

  299. in the middle

  300. of the 20th century,

  301. it just seemed

  302. like the biggest

  303. devastation

  304. to China.

  305. All the missionaries

  306. were pushed out,

  307. severe persecution,

  308. but

  309. it wasn't

  310. lost.

  311. The missionaries

  312. went to surrounding

  313. regions

  314. and the believers

  315. fledgling church

  316. there,

  317. they flourished.

  318. They've gone

  319. from strength

  320. to strength.

  321. This Jesus

  322. is unstoppable.

  323. He can

  324. even use

  325. failures,

  326. defeats,

  327. loss

  328. to spread

  329. his life-giving

  330. word.

  331. And so

  332. Luke's focus

  333. here

  334. is on the

  335. word of the

  336. Lord keeps

  337. going.

  338. And we're

  339. focusing on

  340. Philip.

  341. He's later

  342. called an

  343. evangelist.

  344. We saw him

  345. as a deacon,

  346. he's later

  347. an evangelist.

  348. And his

  349. message can be

  350. summed up in

  351. one word,

  352. verse 5.

  353. The

  354. Christ.

  355. That's his

  356. message.

  357. His signs

  358. remind us

  359. of Jesus.

  360. Spiritual

  361. oppression,

  362. overcoming

  363. Satan,

  364. unclean

  365. spirits are

  366. driven out.

  367. And physical

  368. oppression,

  369. paralyzed,

  370. the lame

  371. are healed.

  372. It just

  373. reminds us of

  374. Jesus again,

  375. doesn't it?

  376. We saw Jesus

  377. in the person

  378. of Stephen

  379. and now we're

  380. seeing him

  381. in Philip.

  382. Jesus is the

  383. hero of this

  384. story,

  385. working through

  386. Philip.

  387. In Jerusalem,

  388. there's moral

  389. outrage,

  390. but in this

  391. city,

  392. there's joy.

  393. Even in

  394. dark days,

  395. Jesus is

  396. unstoppable.

  397. His word is

  398. continuing to

  399. spread through

  400. all the earth.

  401. He's gathering

  402. in his lost

  403. sheep.

  404. All Jesus

  405. began to do,

  406. he's continuing

  407. to do.

  408. Now this

  409. spread of the

  410. gospel was

  411. even more

  412. amazing when

  413. we remember

  414. who the

  415. Samaritans

  416. are.

  417. Now Luke

  418. says in

  419. verse 5,

  420. Philip went

  421. down to the

  422. city of

  423. Samaria.

  424. Now Luke,

  425. he's known

  426. for his very

  427. precise historical

  428. accuracy.

  429. He's known for

  430. it.

  431. So much

  432. of,

  433. anyway,

  434. I won't

  435. go into

  436. that now,

  437. but there

  438. wasn't a

  439. place called

  440. Samaria.

  441. It was called

  442. Sebaste.

  443. I'm not sure how

  444. to pronounce that

  445. in his day.

  446. So he seems to

  447. want us to

  448. remember their

  449. historical,

  450. who they were

  451. historically.

  452. It's a little

  453. indicator.

  454. Now you've

  455. probably heard,

  456. if you've

  457. heard a bunch

  458. of sermons

  459. before,

  460. you've heard

  461. the hatred

  462. between Jewish

  463. and Samaritans.

  464. So I just

  465. want to go

  466. back into

  467. why they

  468. hated each other.

  469. Jews would

  470. go all the

  471. way around

  472. Samaria,

  473. walking around,

  474. just to avoid

  475. going into

  476. unclean

  477. territory.

  478. Think of the

  479. parable of the

  480. Good Samaritan,

  481. which is so

  482. famous.

  483. Why does that

  484. parable work?

  485. Because true

  486. love crosses

  487. even the barrier

  488. between Jews

  489. and Samaritans.

  490. Whoever you

  491. dislike,

  492. this is a

  493. true love

  494. in Jesus

  495. crosses those

  496. barriers.

  497. We learn

  498. of their

  499. origins back

  500. in 1 Kings

  501. 12.

  502. David's son

  503. Solomon,

  504. in the later

  505. part of his

  506. reign,

  507. he starts

  508. taxing the

  509. northern tribes

  510. heavily.

  511. And then

  512. Solomon's

  513. son,

  514. Rehoboam,

  515. instead of

  516. correcting the

  517. injustice,

  518. he doubles

  519. down and

  520. he tries to

  521. use fear

  522. to keep

  523. them submissive.

  524. But it

  525. doesn't work.

  526. They rebel.

  527. The northern

  528. tribes rebel

  529. and they

  530. break off.

  531. And even

  532. though God

  533. had promised

  534. that a son

  535. of David

  536. would be the

  537. forever king

  538. and bring

  539. blessing,

  540. the northern

  541. tribes reject

  542. David's line.

  543. they set up

  544. their own

  545. king,

  546. Jeroboam.

  547. And instead

  548. of going

  549. back to

  550. the temple

  551. where God

  552. had said,

  553. meet me

  554. here,

  555. they set

  556. up two

  557. golden

  558. calves

  559. while claiming

  560. to keep

  561. worshipping

  562. Yahweh.

  563. And then

  564. they create

  565. their false

  566. temple on

  567. Mount

  568. Gerizim.

  569. And so

  570. the Lord

  571. judges them

  572. through the

  573. Assyrian

  574. empire.

  575. taking some

  576. into exile.

  577. And the

  578. Assyrians

  579. also brought

  580. people from

  581. other nations

  582. to come

  583. live in

  584. Samaria so

  585. that they

  586. would learn

  587. their customs.

  588. They're

  589. mixed up in

  590. the religion

  591. of the

  592. world.

  593. So they

  594. reject David's

  595. king.

  596. They build

  597. false temple

  598. with false

  599. worship and

  600. they're

  601. intermingling

  602. worship of

  603. Yahweh with

  604. just the

  605. customs of

  606. the world.

  607. Really they're

  608. worshipping

  609. what the

  610. world does.

  611. they reject

  612. God's

  613. prophets.

  614. They only

  615. believe the

  616. first five

  617. books of

  618. the Old

  619. Testament that

  620. Moses wrote

  621. and they

  622. reject the

  623. rest.

  624. Samaria was

  625. the capital

  626. city of

  627. these northern

  628. tribes.

  629. How impossible

  630. would it have

  631. been for a

  632. Samaritan to

  633. walk into

  634. Judea, into

  635. Jerusalem, to

  636. the temple and

  637. believe that God

  638. accepts them after

  639. all they've

  640. done?

  641. Rejected his

  642. king, rejected

  643. his word,

  644. worshipping false

  645. gods.

  646. How could they

  647. possibly worship

  648. God shoulder to

  649. shoulder with

  650. Jews after all

  651. they've done?

  652. That's why it's so

  653. amazing that

  654. Philip, a Jew,

  655. would come into

  656. this place, this

  657. unclean territory

  658. and likely he

  659. was touched, we're

  660. not told this but

  661. probably he was

  662. touching those he

  663. was healing.

  664. How unlikely that

  665. they would listen to

  666. his message.

  667. He's saying the

  668. Christ.

  669. Christ.

  670. They had rejected

  671. David's line.

  672. How unlikely they

  673. would believe his

  674. message.

  675. The son of David

  676. has come.

  677. But many believe.

  678. Many are

  679. baptised, bowing

  680. the knee to

  681. King Jesus.

  682. That's what Jesus

  683. does.

  684. Humanly

  685. impossible divides

  686. he reconciles.

  687. He reconciles the

  688. northern tribes and

  689. the southern.

  690. I think that's

  691. probably the likely

  692. reason why the

  693. Holy Spirit didn't

  694. come on them right

  695. away.

  696. Luke, throughout

  697. Acts, repentance,

  698. faith and receiving

  699. the Spirit go

  700. together.

  701. This is unusual.

  702. And so Luke's saying

  703. it's unusual.

  704. It's not something we

  705. should create a

  706. church practice on

  707. of needing a second

  708. baptism or something

  709. like that.

  710. This is unusual.

  711. And so I think the

  712. most likely explanation

  713. is God withheld his

  714. Holy Spirit until the

  715. apostles from the

  716. south come and lay

  717. their hands,

  718. authorised, saying

  719. there is true belief

  720. here.

  721. It's that picture of

  722. reconciliation.

  723. God himself testifying

  724. by giving his Holy

  725. Spirit.

  726. This is what Ezekiel,

  727. the prophet, said would

  728. happen in the last

  729. days.

  730. Ezekiel 37, 21-27.

  731. One king shall be king

  732. over them all.

  733. And they shall no

  734. longer be two nations

  735. and no longer divided

  736. into two kingdoms.

  737. They shall not defile

  738. themselves anymore with

  739. their idols and their

  740. detestable things or with

  741. any of their transgressions,

  742. but I will save them from

  743. all the backslidings in

  744. which they have sinned and

  745. will cleanse them.

  746. And they shall be my

  747. people and I will be their

  748. God.

  749. My servant David shall be

  750. king over them and they

  751. shall all have one

  752. shepherd.

  753. They had no way back to

  754. the temple in Jerusalem

  755. so the temple came to

  756. them.

  757. Jesus is the true

  758. temple.

  759. He washes them clean.

  760. He's reuniting his

  761. people.

  762. One kingdom, one

  763. sanctuary of the Spirit.

  764. We're in the last days.

  765. That's the effect Jesus

  766. has.

  767. That's the fruit of faith

  768. in Jesus.

  769. It's reconciliation.

  770. How much our world needs

  771. it.

  772. And then we come to this

  773. man, Simon.

  774. Who is this Simon

  775. character?

  776. Why does Luke spend so

  777. long on him?

  778. He spends, we get to

  779. know him well.

  780. Why does Luke want us to

  781. know Simon?

  782. Well, we're told in

  783. verses 9 to 13 he

  784. practiced magic.

  785. Now, hopefully it's

  786. pretty obvious.

  787. We shouldn't picture what

  788. we think is magic of

  789. illusions that we know

  790. are illusions and magic

  791. tricks.

  792. This researcher, David

  793. Horne, has researched

  794. magic in Greco-Roman

  795. society.

  796. He says magic was about

  797. managing supernatural

  798. powers in such a way

  799. that results are

  800. virtually guaranteed.

  801. So it's saying the

  802. right things.

  803. It's doing the right

  804. processes.

  805. It's paying the right

  806. sum.

  807. It was getting

  808. guaranteed results.

  809. David Horne also says

  810. that people didn't use

  811. magic all the time.

  812. They used it when the

  813. normal religious rituals

  814. couldn't deal with a

  815. person's situation.

  816. If you need protection,

  817. you need healing, you

  818. need success for something

  819. you want to do, you want

  820. harm for your opponents,

  821. if the normal institution

  822. couldn't help, people

  823. turn to magic for

  824. results.

  825. Now, I can't resonate

  826. very well with that

  827. worldview.

  828. I don't think in our

  829. materialistic, what you

  830. see is what is.

  831. We can't resonate

  832. easily.

  833. But isn't the desire for

  834. guaranteed results easy to

  835. resonate with?

  836. Like, don't worry about how

  837. you get the results.

  838. The means doesn't matter.

  839. Like, do a deal with the

  840. devil if you need to.

  841. The means doesn't matter.

  842. Results are all that

  843. matter.

  844. That feels very relevant

  845. today in our culture.

  846. And I'm just, doesn't it

  847. trouble you that the power

  848. Simon thinks he's got with

  849. money is so related to this

  850. idea of magic?

  851. I think we've got more in

  852. common with Simon than we

  853. might first think.

  854. Simon was the go-to guy.

  855. Verse 10, they all paid

  856. attention to him from the

  857. least to the greatest.

  858. He's the go-to guy.

  859. Verse 11, it's emphasized

  860. again, they all paid attention

  861. to him because for a long time

  862. he had amazed them with his

  863. magic.

  864. Who we give our attention to is a

  865. moral choice.

  866. Because who we choose to give our

  867. attention to shows what we really

  868. value in life.

  869. I think we're told about Simon

  870. because Simon, he represents what the

  871. Samaritans value.

  872. They praise him.

  873. He is at the top of their society.

  874. They call him great.

  875. Power of God.

  876. So I think Simon represents their

  877. worldview.

  878. Power, control of a supernatural

  879. world to give guaranteed results.

  880. So I can see at least three main reasons

  881. Luke wants us to get to know Simon.

  882. The first, a bit of a secondary reason

  883. is I think to distinguish that the

  884. miracles Philip was doing were very

  885. different from magic.

  886. Very different.

  887. The early church and Jesus himself was

  888. accused of that.

  889. So I think partly it's to just distinguish

  890. what was going on through the apostles

  891. from what Simon was doing.

  892. Two other reasons I think.

  893. The second is Simon is a backdrop, he's a

  894. foil to see the genuine conversion of so

  895. many in Samaria.

  896. They once paid attention to Simon but we're

  897. now told with one accord they pay attention

  898. to Philip.

  899. There's been a change.

  900. Verse 11 to verse 12 makes that clearer.

  901. They paid attention to Simon, verse 12, but

  902. when they believed Philip as he preached good

  903. news about the kingdom of God in the name of

  904. Jesus Christ, they were baptised.

  905. So when Peter and John came down and prayed for the

  906. converts to give them the Holy Spirit but the

  907. apostles reject Simon, we can be confident that the

  908. apostles really saw genuine faith.

  909. They turned from what they once lived for and really did

  910. turn and pay attention to Jesus.

  911. So Simon being the focal point of their old life, he's a

  912. backdrop to true conversion.

  913. This is a genuine movement of God going on, turning away from

  914. idols to the living God.

  915. I think the third reason we're told about Simon and the one I want

  916. to focus on is that Simon was a massive threat to this newly

  917. formed church.

  918. Verse 13, he believed.

  919. Now, what we make of that, he must have accepted at some

  920. intellectual level the claims of the gospel.

  921. He believed.

  922. He was baptised.

  923. He's in.

  924. He's in this movement.

  925. And he followed Philip around.

  926. But his actions later exposed that his heart had not changed.

  927. He seems to have tried to add Jesus onto his unchanged Samaritan

  928. worldview.

  929. And he had a very big position in society.

  930. He's probably like the famous Christians we talk about going,

  931. isn't it great that so-and-so is a believer?

  932. He had huge influence.

  933. He's inside the church apparently.

  934. Secondly, he could have led others to a superficial faith.

  935. I think it's a threat to this new movement.

  936. So remember their worldview.

  937. Power, control over supernatural world to give guaranteed results

  938. to be someone great.

  939. We see this in his offer to give money to the apostles.

  940. Verse 18 and 19, he wants the power.

  941. Give me this power.

  942. To control the Holy Spirit.

  943. To control God.

  944. To give guaranteed results that when I lay hands,

  945. they get guaranteed results.

  946. They get the spirit.

  947. And we can presume, based off what we're told about him earlier,

  948. he wants to be great.

  949. He wants to be seen as great again.

  950. The greats we saw in Jerusalem, in the council,

  951. they rejected Jesus to keep their power.

  952. Now Simon in Samaria, he accepts Jesus to keep his power.

  953. But Jesus thwarts this threat to superficial religion.

  954. Peter responds basically to hell with you and your money.

  955. It's strong language here.

  956. Your heart is not right with God.

  957. His baptism did him no good.

  958. Peter was calling him to repent.

  959. See how enslaved you still are.

  960. Ask for forgiveness.

  961. And when you ask, don't think you're doing magic,

  962. saying the right words.

  963. If possible, you be forgiven.

  964. Be brought to your knees, Simon.

  965. Realising God has to come and save you.

  966. So Jesus, through his apostles, stops this internal threat.

  967. By unmasking this.

  968. Treating Jesus as useful.

  969. It's insincere.

  970. Insincere belief.

  971. So what would Luke, what does Luke want us to learn from Simon?

  972. What are we meant to be learning from this?

  973. I doubt, I doubt any of us are guilty of the exact sin he tried to do.

  974. I've never tried to offer money.

  975. I've never tried to offer money to have the ability to give the spirit.

  976. So I don't think it's the particulars we should be focusing on.

  977. But we do share this in common with Simon.

  978. The gospel of the free gift of God must first destroy our attempts to be great by what we can offer.

  979. Despite all the public appearances of being in the church, Simon's commitment to self, his commitment to power, to control, to be someone great, had to be destroyed.

  980. Salvation is a gift of God.

  981. Believing it's a gift must be devastating news before it's wonderful.

  982. It had to devastate those back in Jerusalem, like the Pharisees in the parable, who prayed, I thank you that I'm not like other people that I give and I do and I pray and I try, etc., etc.

  983. I'm someone great.

  984. It's got to destroy that.

  985. The free gift of God destroys that.

  986. It's also got to destroy the culture in Samaria.

  987. It's got to devastate the boasting.

  988. I can control what I can achieve.

  989. I am someone great.

  990. That's what the free gift of God in the message of Jesus does.

  991. It destroys all cultures, not just one or two cultures.

  992. It's got to first devastate before its wonderful news.

  993. A farmer in Connecticut in the US where I was born, Nathan Cole lived a long time before me, but lived in the Great Awakening in the 18th century.

  994. He was listening to the powerful preacher George Whitefield.

  995. Here's his response after hearing the gospel from George Whitefield.

  996. My hearing him preach gave me a heart wound.

  997. By God's blessing, my old foundation was broken up.

  998. And I saw that my righteousness could not save me.

  999. It's what the free gift of God has to do to each one of us.

1000. It's got to break up that foundation.

1001. You can't add Jesus onto your life.

1002. He must destroy your foundation.

1003. Only then can you receive God's embrace of you.

  1004. It's a totally free gift.

1005. And brothers and sisters, don't we have more of that foundation to be broken up?

1006. And the freeness of this gift, I think it also gives us insight into how Jesus reconciles people.

1007. Because both the Jewish and the Samaritan idea of greatness, by what you can offer God, is demolished.

1008. The very thing that gives you that sense of superiority is just bulldozed.

1009. Jesus had to give his life to save Philip.

1010. From his sense of moral achievement.

1011. And he had to give his life to save the people in Samaria.

1012. Who trusted in control, power.

1013. We all share the same gift.

1014. Not one of us, not one culture, has offered anything to earn it.

1015. Finally, I think the freeness of this gift shows how great our God is.

  1016. David Bott isn't great.

  1017. Simon's name isn't great.

1018. People who have rejected his king.

  1019. And rejected his word.

1020. And preferred the control and the praise of people trying to prove to be someone great.

1021. That God would provide a way back.

1022. That he would give his son.

1023. He would give his Holy Spirit.

1024. That he would give life forever in his kingdom.

1025. That he would give his people to send into our lives to tell us this wonderful news.

  1026. It's just gift.

  1027. All is a gift.

1028. His name alone is great.

1029. And when we believe that, the more we believe that, that's when peace and joy enters our heart.

1030. When Jesus Christ's name is great.

1031. That's when peace and joy will enter this church more and more.

  1032. It's not our name.

1033. It's Jesus' name that is great.

1034. And don't we want that peace and joy in our city?

1035. And the promise is that peace and joy will be in all the world.

1036. Fully and forever one day.

1037. We're going to be singing.

  1038. With one accord.

1039. And it won't be my name.

1040. It won't be your name.

1041. It won't be our name.

  1042. Grace and joy.

1043. It'll be his name alone we're singing.

1044. Will you pray with me?

1045. Father, thank you for the times that you

1046. frustrate our plans to be seen as someone

  1047. wonderful, someone great

1048. because of whatever we're trusting in.

1049. Thank you for the way you frustrate that

  1050. so that we can

  1051. come to you

1052. and receive the peace and joy

  1053. that is found

  1054. in just celebrating

  1055. your free gift

  1056. of knowing you

1057. of being part of your people

  1058. of the promise

  1059. of eternal life.

1060. Lord, I pray that you'd break up

  1061. our foundations

1062. that we're still clinging to

  1063. more and more

  1064. help us trust you

1065. when you do break that up.

1066. And I pray that you would lead us

  1067. to rejoice more

1068. in the name of Jesus

1069. and that because of him

1070. our names are written in heaven.

1071. In his name I pray.

  1072. Amen.
