  1. Alright, so we're reading from 1 John chapter 2 starting at verse 28 through to 310.

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  2. And now little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence

  3. and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

  4. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness

  5. has been born of him.

  6. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God

  7. and so we are.

  8. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

  9. Beloved, we are God's children now and what we will be has not yet appeared, but what

  10. we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

  11. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

  12. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness.

  13. Sin is lawlessness.

  14. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins and in him there is no sin.

  15. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning.

  16. No one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

  17. Little children, let no one deceive you.

  18. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous as he is righteous.

  19. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil.

  20. For the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

  21. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

  22. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning.

  23. But God's seed abides in him and he cannot keep on sinning.

  24. Because he has been born of God.

  25. By this it is evident who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil.

  26. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God.

  27. Nor is the one who does not love his brother.

  28. Well good morning everyone.

  29. Why don't we pray and ask God to help us as we meditate on his word this morning.

  30. Heavenly Father please prepare our hearts to receive your word this morning.

  31. Remove every distraction from our minds.

  32. And please give us true thoughts.

  33. Thoughts that will encourage and strengthen us in our faith.

  34. In Jesus name.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well in the last couple of years my wife Jen has gone into gardening in a big way.

  37. Some of you know this because she probably talks to you about her garden constantly.

  38. And in fact the owner of an online business last year told Jen that she, this is a business selling seeds and tubers and the like.

  39. Last year told Jen that she is her best customer.

  40. I mean I don't know, I probably should feel a bit worried about that.

  41. But our backyard is slowly being transformed.

  42. So garden beds have gone in and lawn is disappearing.

  43. The clothesline is under siege.

  44. Like it is being besieged by garden beds and there are threats that it needs to be moved to a shadier part of the yard.

  45. Because apparently flowers need sun more than laundry does.

  46. I don't really get it.

  47. For now there's sort of a line of demarcation at the 17th parallel.

  48. Where you know the gardens, sort of a truce has been established, a temporary truce.

  49. Garden beds are to the north and lawn to the south.

  50. But I think the garden beds will start making incursions across that boundary soon.

  51. It's, I mean, you look at our backyard and actually over summer there's been sort of splashes of colour everywhere from flowers.

  52. But probably more green than other colours.

  53. I think it's been a bad season apparently.

  54. So she tells me.

  55. But anyway, in any case, you look at our backyard and it tells a story, right?

  56. The transformation of our backyard tells a story.

  57. A gardener lives here.

  58. Likewise, the transformation that takes place in the life of a Christian tells a story.

  59. God lives here.

  60. For any who are here this morning who are undecided about whether or not you want to be a Christian,

  61. I hope you see in this passage some reasons why it's good.

  62. And for those here today, many of us who are Christians already, who are believers,

  63. well, you probably already know in theory that God's spirit is transforming you.

  64. But sometimes we forget that, don't we?

  65. Sometimes the change is so slow.

  66. Sometimes it's punctuated by so many reversals that we begin to despair.

  67. Is God really transforming me?

  68. Well, this passage is given to encourage us.

  69. In God's word today, we see three realities that utterly transform those who trust in Jesus.

  70. Three realities that utterly transform those who trust in Jesus.

  71. The reality of who you are, the reality of what you will be, and the reality of what Christ has done.

  72. And we find those three realities in chapter 3, verses 1 to 6.

  73. And that's where we're going to start.

  74. And then afterwards, we're going to look just before and after those verses, the frame,

  75. which kind of tells us why John was teaching us these things.

  76. But first, we're going to occupy our minds with chapter 3, verses 1 to 6,

  77. and those three life-transforming realities.

  78. Now, I just want to say to the young people who are here today,

  79. so if you're at school, young people here today,

  80. if you can work out what these three things are and remember them,

  81. come and tell me afterwards and I'll give you...

  82. Well, actually, I won't give you a lolly because that's Don's...

  83. I don't want to sort of tread on Don's territory.

  84. I'll give you a high five, right?

  85. So these are the three things to look out for.

  86. Who are you?

  87. What will you one day be?

  88. And what has Christ done?

  89. They're the three things I'm trying to remember, okay?

  90. All right, first, the reality of who you are.

  91. Look at chapter 2, verse 29.

  92. Chapter 2, verse 29.

  93. If you know that he is righteous,

  94. you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness

  95. has been born of him.

  96. See what kind of love the Father has given to us

  97. that we should be called children of God

  98. and so we are.

  99. The reason why the world does not know us

  100. is that it did not know him.

  101. Here, the word of God invites us to marvel

  102. at the highest privilege of the Christian.

  103. You know, think of what we might have been called.

  104. We might have been called God's enemies.

  105. Indeed, Romans chapter 5, verse 10 says

    Romans 5:10

  106. that we were God's enemies.

  107. But no longer.

  108. It's not God's pleasure or will

  109. that we should be called his enemies.

  110. We might be called God's creatures

  111. and we are his creatures.

  112. He's the maker.

  113. We're his handiwork.

  114. He's the potter.

  115. We're the clay.

  116. But it's not God's desire

  117. that we should only be called his creatures.

  118. We might be called God's servants

  119. and we are.

  120. He is the Lord.

  121. It's his to command.

  122. It's ours to obey.

  123. It's his to lead.

  124. It's ours to follow.

  125. But it wasn't God's delight

  126. that we should only be called his servants.

  127. We might be called God's people

  128. and we are.

  129. Indeed, the Old Testament rarely reaches higher than that.

  130. It's the goal of the promise to the patriarchs,

  131. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  132. It's the goal of the covenant established with Abraham

  133. and established at Sinai, the Old Covenant,

  134. that he should be our God and we should be his people.

  135. But even that wasn't sufficient for the joy of God.

  136. God's will and pleasure and delight and joy is that we should be called his children

  137. and that we might call him our father.

  138. And when God calls us his children,

  139. it's no mere label awkwardly placed where it doesn't really belong.

  140. So verse 1 says,

  141. see what kind of love the father has given us

  142. that we should be called children of God

  143. and so we are.

  144. The so we are there doesn't mean

  145. so we are called his children.

  146. It means so we are his children.

  147. God calls us his children because we are his children.

  148. Now this most profound and wondrous truth about you

  149. is something the world can't perceive and can't comprehend.

  150. See, the world does not know us, verse 1 says.

  151. It can only be perceived by those who know God.

  152. Because the world doesn't know God,

  153. it doesn't recognise us.

  154. It can't recognise us as God's children

  155. because it doesn't recognise who God is.

  156. But we know it because God promises it to us in the word.

  157. For us, this honour,

  158. for us, this place of security and privilege

  159. privilege and intimate access,

  160. we are God's children.

  161. There's a famous series of photographs

  162. of John F. Kennedy

  163. when he's American president

  164. and he's in the Oval Office

  165. working at the desk,

  166. the resolute desk.

  167. Apparently that's what the president's desk is called.

  168. That's a good name for a desk.

  169. But he's in the Oval Office

  170. at the president's desk

  171. and there,

  172. playing at his feet,

  173. hiding under the desk,

  174. is his son,

  175. John Jr.

  176. You know,

  177. such is God the Father.

  178. Such we are, rather,

  179. to God the Father.

  180. We are scions of the great king.

  181. We are the cherished toddlers

  182. of the emperor of heaven and earth.

  183. What love is this?

  184. What grace beyond measure?

  185. May we never tire of hearing it.

  186. Bilquis Sheath

  187. was a prominent Pakistani Muslim woman

  188. who became a Christian

  189. on Christmas Eve 1966

  190. and she went on to be an evangelist.

  191. And she wrote a book

  192. sharing her testimony

  193. of how she became a Christian,

  194. an autobiography,

  195. and she called that book,

  196. the title she gave it is,

  197. I Dared to Call Him Father.

  198. It's a privilege

  199. she had never previously known.

  200. Now, in some other parts

  201. of the New Testament,

  202. for example,

  203. Paul's epistles,

  204. we are God's children

  205. by adoption.

  206. He adopts us as his children.

  207. Here, however,

  208. in 1 John,

  209. we are God's children

  210. by birth,

  211. by new birth.

  212. We are,

  213. verse 28,

  214. born of him.

  215. Sorry,

  216. verse 29,

  217. we are born of him.

  218. And this new birth

  219. is for all

  220. who belong to Jesus.

  221. As it says in John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  222. John's Gospel,

  223. that is,

    Isaiah 1:12

  224. chapter 1,

  225. verses 12 and 13,

  226. but to all who did receive him,

  227. who believed in his name,

  228. he gave the right

  229. to become children of God,

  230. who were born,

  231. not of blood,

  232. nor of the will of the flesh,

  233. nor of the will of man,

  234. but born of God.

  235. For all who believe in Jesus,

  236. this is the reality

  237. of who you are.

  238. You are a child of God.

  239. And the further point

  240. God's word makes here

  241. is that this is a reality

  242. which transforms you.

  243. Look at verse 29 again.

  244. If you know that he is righteous,

  245. you may be sure

  246. that everyone who practices righteousness

  247. has been born of him.

  248. See, there's a family likeness

  249. which cannot but pass down

  250. from the father to his children.

  251. By nature and by nurture,

  252. by genetics and by unconscious imitation,

  253. children come to resemble their parents.

  254. You know,

  255. we see that in our earthly children.

  256. I see it in my children.

  257. Sometimes I wish I didn't.

  258. But there's nothing to be regretted

  259. in the family likeness

  260. that passes from God the father

  261. to the children who are born of him.

  262. For that family likeness

  263. is his righteousness.

  264. If we know he is righteous,

  265. you may be sure that

  266. everyone who practices righteousness

  267. has been born of him.

  268. Once we're born again

  269. as God's children,

  270. it is inevitable

  271. that we will come

  272. to resemble our father.

  273. If he's righteous,

  274. then we shall learn

  275. to do what's right.

  276. You see that same idea

  277. in chapter 3 verse 9.

  278. Chapter 3 verse 9.

  279. No one born of God

  280. makes a practice of sinning

  281. for God's seed abides in him

  282. and he cannot keep on sinning

  283. because he has been born of God.

  284. Now on an initial reading,

  285. I find that unsettling.

  286. If I take just chapter 3 verse 9

  287. out of context,

  288. it doesn't comfort me,

  289. it alarms me,

  290. it terrifies me.

  291. For I still do sin.

  292. So does that mean

  293. I'm not a child of God?

  294. Does even a single sin

  295. post-conversion

  296. disqualify me

  297. as one of God's children?

  298. If that's the case,

  299. then I would live

  300. in a state of constant anxiety

  301. and insecurity

  302. and despair.

  303. But in the context

  304. of John's epistle here,

  305. that can't be what it means

  306. because back in chapter 1

  307. verses 8 and 10,

  308. and you can look at those

  309. with me if you like,

  310. chapter 1 verse 8 and 10,

  311. John writes,

  312. if we say we have no sin,

  313. we deceive ourselves

  314. and the truth is not in us.

  315. If we confess our sins,

  316. he's faithful and just

  317. to forgive us our sins

  318. and to cleanse us

  319. from all unrighteousness.

  320. If we say we have not sinned,

  321. we make him a liar

  322. and his word is not in us.

  323. So those verses in chapter 1

  324. say both that all of us

  325. have both a principle of sin

  326. dwelling in us still,

  327. as well as specific sins.

  328. sins of which we're guilty.

  329. So none of us are sinless

  330. and perfect yet.

  331. So if here in chapter 3

  332. John isn't claiming

  333. that the Christian

  334. is already sinless,

  335. then what is he saying?

  336. He's talking about

  337. what is the defining reality

  338. of your life,

  339. the defining quality

  340. of your life,

  341. your central

  342. and controlling disposition.

  343. And if you're a child of God,

  344. and you are,

  345. if you believe in Jesus,

  346. if you're a child of God,

  347. then sin will not define you.

  348. Those God makes his children

  349. in name,

  350. he must also make his children

  351. in nature.

  352. He cannot

  353. and will not

  354. leave you as you are.

  355. He takes us

  356. from the house of sin

  357. and we are born again

  358. into the house

  359. of his righteousness

  360. with the stamp

  361. of our Father's nature

  362. upon us.

  363. This then

  364. is the first reality

  365. that

  366. utterly transforms

  367. us.

  368. us.

  369. The reality

  370. of who we are.

  371. We are children

  372. of a righteous Father.

  373. The second

  374. reality

  375. that transforms

  376. all who trust

  377. in Jesus

  378. is the reality

  379. of what you will be.

  380. The reality

  381. of what you will be.

  382. Look at chapter 3

  383. verses 2 and 3.

  384. Beloved,

  385. we are God's children

  386. now

  387. and what we will be

  388. has not yet

  389. appeared.

  390. But we know

  391. that when he appears

  392. we will be like him

  393. because we shall see him

  394. as he is.

  395. And everyone

  396. who thus hopes

  397. in him

  398. purifies himself

  399. as he is pure.

  400. In verse 2

  401. you'll see

  402. there's a shift.

  403. There's a shift

  404. from talking about

  405. what we already are

  406. now we are

  407. God's children

  408. what we already are

  409. to talking about

  410. what we will

  411. one day

  412. be.

  413. What we will be

  414. has not yet

  415. appeared

  416. it says.

  417. That is

  418. what we will be

  419. has not yet

  420. been made manifest.

  421. It's not yet

  422. been revealed.

  423. It's not yet

  424. been made known.

  425. Now certainly

  426. it's not yet

  427. been made known

  428. to the world.

  429. Now as you

  430. walk down the street

  431. or go to

  432. Stockland,

  433. Glendale

  434. or

  435. Westfield,

  436. Qatar

  437. or whatever it is

  438. you shop

  439. and walk through

  440. the shopping centre

  441. through Woolies,

  442. you know

  443. people aren't

  444. they don't

  445. stop and marvel

  446. at you

  447. as you walk

  448. by and go

  449. wow

  450. this person

  451. is an everlasting

  452. splendour

  453. to borrow a phrase

  454. from C.S. Lewis.

  455. I mean people

  456. it's not yet revealed

  457. what you will be

  458. right

  459. to the world

  460. but

  461. it's not even yet

  462. fully revealed

  463. to us.

  464. It's not even

  465. yet fully made

  466. known to us

  467. what we will be.

  468. Do you know

  469. you who are

  470. mortal

  471. what it will be

  472. like when you're

  473. clothed in

  474. immortality?

  475. Do you know

  476. you with your

  477. perishable body

  478. what it will be

  479. like when you

  480. are raised

  481. imperishable?

  482. Do you

  483. sown in

  484. dishonour?

  485. No

  486. what it will

  487. be when you

  488. are raised

  489. in glory?

  490. There's a song

  491. by Mercy Me

  492. I Can Only

  493. Imagine.

  494. Do you know

  495. the song?

  496. It starts

  497. like this

  498. I can only

  499. imagine

  500. what it will

  501. be like

  502. and so it

  503. is.

  504. Now we can

  505. imagine it

  506. but we don't

  507. fully see it

  508. yet.

  509. but one

  510. thing we do

  511. know

  512. we know

  513. that when

  514. Christ

  515. appears

  516. we shall

  517. be like

  518. him

  519. because we

  520. shall see

  521. him as he

  522. is.

  523. Is he

  524. full of

  525. compassion?

  526. Then so

  527. too will we

  528. be.

  529. Is he

  530. gentle?

  531. Then all

  532. harshness will

  533. flee from

  534. us.

  535. Is he

  536. kind?

  537. Then we

  538. will outshine

  539. Mother Teresa.

  540. When we

  541. see Jesus

  542. as he

  543. truly is

  544. that vision

  545. of his

  546. infinite

  547. glory and

  548. goodness

  549. will change

  550. us in an

  551. instant.

  552. Because we

  553. humans we're

  554. worshipping

  555. creatures.

  556. We can't

  557. help but find

  558. things to

  559. worship.

  560. We're driven

  561. by delight.

  562. We lock

  563. on to

  564. things we

  565. perceive as

  566. good and

  567. we pursue

  568. them.

  569. In the

  570. garden Satan

  571. deceived Eve

  572. to sin

  573. or rather

  574. Satan

  575. enticed

  576. Eve to

  577. sin by

  578. deceiving

  579. her.

  580. By deceiving

  581. her such

  582. that she

  583. came to

  584. see the

  585. world in

  586. a different

  587. place.

  588. she came

  589. to desire

  590. the fruit

  591. that God

  592. had forbidden

  593. to perceive

  594. as good

  595. what in

  596. reality was

  597. evil.

  598. That's the

  599. same with

  600. us.

  601. When we

  602. sin it's

  603. because we've

  604. been seduced

  605. by some

  606. counterfeit

  607. vision of

  608. what is

  609. good.

  610. So you

  611. tell a

  612. lie.

  613. Why do

  614. you tell

  615. a lie?

  616. Because you

  617. desire to

  618. preserve your

  619. reputation.

  620. You want to

  621. avoid embarrassment.

  622. So you

  623. lie about

  624. something.

  625. In that

  626. moment you

  627. can't see

  628. that a

  629. good name

  630. is not

  631. a good

  632. name if

  633. it's

  634. false.

  635. And your

  636. disordered

  637. desire leads

  638. you to

  639. sin.

  640. Or you're

  641. greedy.

  642. You know

  643. at a

  644. shared meal

  645. you take

  646. too much

  647. for yourself

  648. disregarding

  649. those who

  650. are to

  651. follow.

  652. In that

  653. moment you

  654. can't see

  655. that serving

  656. others is

  657. better than

  658. serving

  659. yourself.

  660. That a

  661. full heart

  662. is better

  663. than a

  664. full belly.

  665. Your

  666. disordered

  667. desire leads

  668. you to

  669. sin.

  670. But when

  671. we see

  672. Jesus as

  673. he is,

  674. when we

  675. behold

  676. Christ in

  677. all his

  678. perfection,

  679. when our

  680. senses are

  681. filled with

  682. his supreme

  683. goodness,

  684. all those

  685. little

  686. deceptions to

  687. which we're

  688. prone in

  689. the present,

  690. they'll all

  691. be exposed.

  692. His light

  693. will drive

  694. out every

  695. shadow.

  696. when we

  697. drink from

  698. the fountain,

  699. we'll

  700. never return

  701. to the

  702. stagnant

  703. pools.

  704. When we

  705. behold his

  706. beauty,

  707. we'll never

  708. again desire

  709. what is

  710. hideous.

  711. When we

  712. delight in

  713. the sun,

  714. we will

  715. never again

  716. find pleasure

  717. in an

  718. idol.

  719. There'll

  720. come a

  721. time when

  722. you will

  723. never have

  724. to hold

  725. your tongue

  726. because

  727. there'll

  728. never be

  729. anything

  730. that provokes

  731. you to

  732. anger or

  733. to speak

  734. harshly.

  735. There'll

  736. come a

  737. time when

  738. you'll

  739. never again

  740. have to

  741. look away

  742. because

  743. there'll

  744. never be

  745. anything to

  746. tempt you

  747. to impurity.

  748. Everything

  749. you see

  750. will be

  751. infused

  752. with Christ.

  753. And even

  754. just knowing

  755. that we

  756. shall be

  757. like him,

  758. that has

  759. an effect

  760. on us

  761. now.

  762. That future

  763. reaches back

  764. into the

  765. present and

  766. awakens better

  767. desires within

  768. us.

  769. See verse

  770. three again?

  771. And everyone

  772. who thus

  773. hopes in

  774. him

  775. purifies

  776. himself as

  777. he is

  778. pure.

  779. We don't

  780. yet have

  781. that full

  782. unhindered

  783. sight of

  784. Christ and

  785. what we

  786. will be.

  787. How will

  788. we like

  789. him?

  790. But we

  791. do have

  792. his promise.

  793. We do

  794. have this

  795. hope.

  796. We

  797. might not

  798. see his

  799. form but

  800. we hear

  801. his voice.

  802. We might

  803. not have

  804. the vision

  805. before our

  806. eyes but

  807. we at

  808. least have

  809. one for

  810. our minds,

  811. our imagination

  812. and we're

  813. drawn towards

  814. it.

  815. We're drawn

  816. onwards.

  817. We long

  818. to be now

  819. what we

  820. will be

  821. then.

  822. And so

  823. even now

  824. that future

  825. reaches back

  826. and transforms

  827. the present.

  828. Everyone who

  829. hopes thus

  830. purifies himself

  831. as he is

  832. pure.

  833. the more

  834. we

  835. contemplate

  836. Christ

  837. and the

  838. reality of

  839. what we

  840. will be

  841. the more

  842. we become

  843. like him

  844. even now.

  845. This then

  846. is the

  847. second reality

  848. that transforms

  849. us.

  850. The reality

  851. of what

  852. we will

  853. be.

  854. We shall

  855. be like

  856. him or

  857. we shall

  858. see him

  859. as he

  860. is.

  861. The third

  862. reality that

  863. transforms us

  864. is the

  865. reality of

  866. what Christ

  867. has done.

  868. What Christ

  869. has done.

  870. Look at

  871. three verses

  872. four to six.

  873. everyone who

  874. makes a

  875. practice of

  876. sinning

  877. also

  878. practices

  879. lawlessness.

  880. Sin is

  881. lawlessness.

  882. You know

  883. that he

  884. appeared to

  885. take away

  886. sins and

  887. in him

  888. there is

  889. no sin.

  890. No one

  891. who abides

  892. in him

  893. keeps on

  894. sinning.

  895. No one

  896. who keeps

  897. on sinning

  898. has either

  899. seen him

  900. or known

  901. him.

  902. Verse

  903. four gives

  904. us a

  905. definition

  906. of sin

  907. as John

  908. is using

  909. the word

  910. in this

  911. passage.

  912. Sin is

  913. lawlessness

  914. John says.

  915. Now John

  916. is not just

  917. talking about

  918. particular

  919. sins,

  920. individual

  921. sins,

  922. he's talking

  923. about the

  924. root of

  925. sin.

  926. Sin is

  927. lawlessness.

  928. It's living

  929. as an

  930. outlaw.

  931. It's

  932. disregarding the

  933. rule of

  934. God's kingdom.

  935. It's

  936. disregarding the

  937. commands of

  938. our Lord.

  939. heart.

  940. It's the

  941. heart that

  942. says I'll

  943. do it

  944. my way.

  945. I don't

  946. care what

  947. God says.

  948. I don't

  949. care what

  950. anyone says.

  951. I'll pay no

  952. attention to

  953. him.

  954. Sin is

  955. lawlessness.

  956. It's

  957. living as

  958. a rebel.

  959. Verse

  960. five tells

  961. us that

  962. Christ

  963. appeared in

  964. order to

  965. take away

  966. our sins.

  967. Christ's

  968. coming,

  969. Christ's

  970. perfect life,

  971. in him there

  972. was no

  973. sin,

  974. Christ's

  975. atoning death,

  976. Christ's

  977. resurrection to

  978. new life,

  979. all of

  980. that is

  981. with the

  982. goal and

  983. the outcome

  984. that he

  985. might take

  986. away our

  987. sins.

  988. Now that

  989. Christ takes

  990. away our

  991. sins means

  992. in the first

  993. instance that

  994. it means that

  995. he takes

  996. away the

  997. penalty of

  998. our sins.

  999. We are

  1000. truly and

  1001. completely

  1002. forgiven.

  1003. But it

  1004. also means

  1005. that he

  1006. takes away

  1007. our sins

  1008. themselves.

  1009. so long

  1010. as any

  1011. sin remains

  1012. in us,

  1013. as it

  1014. does in

  1015. the

  1016. present,

  1017. but so

  1018. long as

  1019. any sin

  1020. remains in

  1021. us,

  1022. there is

  1023. an aspect

  1024. of the

  1025. achievement

  1026. of the

  1027. cross that

  1028. has not

  1029. yet been

  1030. fully

  1031. realised.

  1032. Verse

  1033. six,

  1034. no one

  1035. who abides

  1036. in him

  1037. keeps on

  1038. sinning.

  1039. It's

  1040. impossible

  1041. to live

  1042. in,

  1043. to abide

  1044. in,

  1045. the one

  1046. who appeared

  1047. to take

  1048. away sins

  1049. and not

  1050. have your

  1051. sins taken

  1052. away.

  1053. If he

  1054. came to

  1055. take away

  1056. sins and

  1057. were in

  1058. him,

  1059. then he

  1060. will take

  1061. away our

  1062. sins.

  1063. Verse

  1064. eight says,

  1065. the reason

  1066. the son of

  1067. God appeared

  1068. was to

  1069. destroy the

  1070. works of

  1071. the devil.

  1072. It's

  1073. impossible to

  1074. be united

  1075. with the

  1076. one who

  1077. destroys the

  1078. works of

  1079. the devil

  1080. and not

  1081. have the

  1082. devil's

  1083. works

  1084. destroyed in

  1085. our

  1086. lives.

  1087. What

  1088. Christ has

  1089. already

  1090. done when

  1091. he first

  1092. appeared

  1093. must have

  1094. its full

  1095. outworking.

  1096. It must

  1097. have its

  1098. full effect.

  1099. The

  1100. achievement

  1101. of the

  1102. cross

  1103. cannot be

  1104. reversed.

  1105. What

  1106. Christ has

  1107. done

  1108. cannot be

  1109. undone.

  1110. Like a

  1111. domino chain,

  1112. if the

  1113. first domino

  1114. has fallen,

  1115. then the

  1116. rest must

  1117. follow.

  1118. If Christ

  1119. has taken

  1120. away your

  1121. sin,

  1122. then he

  1123. will take

  1124. away your

  1125. sin.

  1126. Anything

  1127. else is

  1128. unthinkable.

  1129. Jesus

  1130. didn't suffer

  1131. so that

  1132. sin might

  1133. be ignored.

  1134. He suffered

  1135. so that

  1136. sin might

  1137. be destroyed.

  1138. He didn't

  1139. die and

  1140. rise again

  1141. so that

  1142. sin might

  1143. be tolerated.

  1144. He died

  1145. and rose

  1146. so that

  1147. sin might

  1148. be uprooted.

  1149. And if

  1150. that's what

  1151. Christ has

  1152. done,

  1153. then the

  1154. power of

  1155. sin must

  1156. be shattered

  1157. in the

  1158. life of

  1159. the believer.

  1160. power.

  1161. Here

  1162. then are

  1163. three realities

  1164. that utterly

  1165. transform all

  1166. who believe

  1167. in Jesus.

  1168. The reality

  1169. of who

  1170. we are.

  1171. We are

  1172. children of

  1173. God.

  1174. The reality

  1175. of what

  1176. you will

  1177. be,

  1178. we will

  1179. be,

  1180. we will

  1181. be like

  1182. him.

  1183. And the

  1184. reality of

  1185. what Christ

  1186. has done.

  1187. He appeared

  1188. to take

  1189. away sin,

  1190. to destroy

  1191. the devil's

  1192. work.

  1193. And the

  1194. reason John

  1195. reminds his

  1196. readers of

  1197. these three

  1198. realities is

  1199. given in

  1200. the surrounding

  1201. frame.

  1202. So 2

  1203. verse 28,

  1204. 3 verses 7

  1205. to 10.

  1206. We're going

  1207. to look at

  1208. that briefly.

  1209. Look at

  1210. chapter 2

  1211. verse 28.

  1212. And now

  1213. little children,

  1214. abide in

  1215. him,

  1216. remain in

  1217. him,

  1218. continue in

  1219. him,

  1220. and now

  1221. little children,

  1222. abide in

  1223. him so that

  1224. when he

  1225. appears,

  1226. we may

  1227. have

  1228. confidence

  1229. and not

  1230. shrink back

  1231. from him

  1232. in shame

  1233. at his

  1234. coming.

  1235. You could

  1236. summarise

  1237. verse 28

  1238. in this

  1239. way.

  1240. Be

  1241. Christ

  1242. now

  1243. that you

  1244. might be

  1245. Christ

  1246. then.

  1247. Be

  1248. Christ

  1249. now

  1250. that you

  1251. might be

  1252. Christ

  1253. then.

  1254. See,

  1255. this is

  1256. nothing less

  1257. than the

  1258. chief goal

  1259. of the

  1260. Christian.

  1261. If

  1262. Christ

  1263. is the

  1264. highest

  1265. treasure,

  1266. and he

  1267. is,

  1268. then the

  1269. goal of

  1270. the

  1271. non-Christian

  1272. is to

  1273. find

  1274. Christ,

  1275. and the

  1276. goal of

  1277. the

  1278. Christian

  1279. is to

  1280. keep

  1281. Christ.

  1282. If you

  1283. have

  1284. Christ,

  1285. then you

  1286. have all

  1287. that belongs

  1288. to Christ,

  1289. and since

  1290. all belongs

  1291. to Christ,

  1292. if you

  1293. have Christ,

  1294. you have

  1295. all.

  1296. Whatever

  1297. else happens

  1298. in life is

  1299. trivial compared

  1300. to this,

  1301. that you

  1302. are found

  1303. in Christ

  1304. when he

  1305. comes.

  1306. And the

  1307. way to

  1308. be found

  1309. in Christ

  1310. when he

  1311. comes is

  1312. to remain

  1313. in Christ

  1314. while you

  1315. wait.

  1316. For a

  1317. short time,

  1318. for a

  1319. short time

  1320. many years

  1321. ago, I

  1322. was attending

  1323. a congregation

  1324. of the

  1325. Chinese Christian

  1326. Church in

  1327. Milsons Point

  1328. in Sydney.

  1329. It was kind

  1330. of between

  1331. pastors,

  1332. and they're

  1333. sort of working

  1334. out what to

  1335. do as an

  1336. English-speaking

  1337. congregation,

  1338. and at

  1339. the time

  1340. they had

  1341. David Cook

  1342. coming and

  1343. sort of looking

  1344. after the

  1345. congregation and

  1346. preaching,

  1347. and David

  1348. Cook was the

  1349. principal of

  1350. Sydney Missionary

  1351. Bible College

  1352. at the time.

  1353. So I was

  1354. going along,

  1355. David Cook

  1356. was there,

  1357. and I

  1358. remember a

  1359. conversation

  1360. that took

  1361. place after

  1362. the church

  1363. service,

  1364. and David

  1365. Cook was

  1366. chatting with

  1367. a few

  1368. people,

  1369. and he

  1370. was talking

  1371. about how

  1372. he'd been

  1373. trying to

  1374. come up

  1375. with a

  1376. catchphrase,

  1377. like a

  1378. summary for

  1379. the New

  1380. Testament,

  1381. or really

  1382. for the

  1383. Bible.

  1384. I think

  1385. for the

  1386. New Testament

  1387. I think

  1388. it was,

  1389. a catchphrase

  1390. for the

  1391. New Testament,

  1392. so like a

  1393. slogan,

  1394. just a few

  1395. words,

  1396. a meme or

  1397. something if

  1398. you like we

  1399. might say

  1400. that captures

  1401. the message

  1402. of the

  1403. New Testament

  1404. in as few

  1405. words as

  1406. possible.

  1407. And so we

  1408. said,

  1409. look,

  1410. what have you

  1411. come up

  1412. with?

  1413. And he

  1414. said this

  1415. was his

  1416. proposal,

  1417. this is like

  1418. the New

  1419. Testament's

  1420. version of

  1421. just do it

  1422. for Nike

  1423. or something

  1424. like that,

  1425. right?

  1426. What is it

  1427. for the

  1428. New Testament?

  1429. This is

  1430. David Cook's

  1431. thought.

  1432. Come,

  1433. stay.

  1434. That's the

  1435. message of

  1436. the New

  1437. Testament.

  1438. Come,

  1439. stay.

  1440. Abide in

  1441. him.

  1442. Continue

  1443. in

  1444. him.

  1445. If you

  1446. want to

  1447. get to

  1448. Italy,

  1449. you must

  1450. get on

  1451. an airplane

  1452. and you

  1453. must remain

  1454. in the

  1455. airplane

  1456. until it

  1457. lands in

  1458. Rome.

  1459. There's no

  1460. point exiting

  1461. the plane

  1462. mid-flight.

  1463. That will

  1464. do you no

  1465. good.

  1466. Likewise,

  1467. Christian,

  1468. to arrive

  1469. at your

  1470. destination,

  1471. abide in

  1472. him.

  1473. Remain in

  1474. him.

  1475. The reason

  1476. this message

  1477. was so

  1478. urgent for

  1479. the believers

  1480. to whom

  1481. John wrote

  1482. is that

  1483. there were

  1484. many who

  1485. had not

  1486. continued in

  1487. him.

  1488. Many who

  1489. had not

  1490. remained.

  1491. Look at

  1492. chapter 2

  1493. verse 19.

  1494. Chapter 2

  1495. verse 19

  1496. where John

  1497. talks about

  1498. some of

  1499. these.

  1500. 2 verse 19,

  1501. they went

  1502. out from

  1503. us,

  1504. but they

  1505. were not

  1506. of us.

  1507. For if they

  1508. had been

  1509. of us,

  1510. they would

  1511. have continued

  1512. with us,

  1513. but they

  1514. went out,

  1515. that it

  1516. might become

  1517. plain that

  1518. they all

  1519. are not

  1520. of us.

  1521. See,

  1522. there were

  1523. those who

  1524. hadn't

  1525. continued,

  1526. who hadn't

  1527. remained,

  1528. and what's

  1529. more,

  1530. those who

  1531. had departed

  1532. in John's

  1533. time,

  1534. those who

  1535. had departed

  1536. were influencing

  1537. those who

  1538. remained.

  1539. Those who

  1540. remained

  1541. were having

  1542. doubts.

  1543. Maybe they're

  1544. right.

  1545. Maybe I

  1546. should leave

  1547. too.

  1548. The same

  1549. is true

  1550. today.

  1551. I've been

  1552. a Christian

  1553. for almost

  1554. 35 years.

  1555. But in

  1556. the last

  1557. few years,

  1558. more than

  1559. any time I

  1560. can remember,

  1561. there has

  1562. been a

  1563. chorus of

  1564. those who

  1565. have

  1566. departed

  1567. attempting

  1568. to influence

  1569. those who

  1570. remain.

  1571. Last year,

  1572. I was

  1573. listening to

  1574. a podcast.

  1575. I won't

  1576. tell you the

  1577. exact name

  1578. of the

  1579. podcast,

  1580. but let's

  1581. call the

  1582. podcast

  1583. Leaving

  1584. Church.

  1585. That's

  1586. close to

  1587. its name,

  1588. Leaving

  1589. Church.

  1590. And it

  1591. consists of

  1592. interviews with

  1593. people who

  1594. have walked

  1595. away from

  1596. church and

  1597. walked away

  1598. from Jesus.

  1599. And many

  1600. of the

  1601. stories are

  1602. tragic.

  1603. In some

  1604. cases,

  1605. it's

  1606. actually the

  1607. sin and

  1608. failings of

  1609. Christians in

  1610. the church

  1611. that is

  1612. largely to

  1613. blame for

  1614. people being

  1615. disillusioned and

  1616. leaving.

  1617. It's easy to

  1618. sympathise with

  1619. those who've

  1620. departed, to

  1621. see things from

  1622. their point of

  1623. view.

  1624. And they

  1625. want others to

  1626. depart too.

  1627. Each of the

  1628. episodes of that

  1629. podcast, the

  1630. host signs off

  1631. in this way,

  1632. keep leaving.

  1633. But God's

  1634. word for

  1635. first century

  1636. believers and

  1637. God's word for

  1638. 21st century

  1639. believers is

  1640. abide in

  1641. him.

  1642. Continue

  1643. in

  1644. him.

  1645. And

  1646. God said to

  1647. them and he

  1648. said to us,

  1649. he says to

  1650. us, verse

  1651. seven, chapter

  1652. three, verse

  1653. seven, little

  1654. children, let

  1655. no one deceive

  1656. you.

  1657. Let no one

  1658. deceive you.

  1659. And so God

  1660. here in this

  1661. passage invites

  1662. us to compare

  1663. and to consider

  1664. these two

  1665. groups, those

  1666. who had

  1667. departed and

  1668. those who

  1669. remained.

  1670. And consider

  1671. where do you

  1672. see the power

  1673. that produces

  1674. godliness at

  1675. work?

  1676. Chapter

  1677. three, verse

  1678. seven, little

  1679. children, let

  1680. no one deceive

  1681. you.

  1682. Whoever

  1683. practices

  1684. righteousness is

  1685. righteous as

  1686. he is

  1687. righteous.

  1688. Whoever

  1689. makes a

  1690. practice of

  1691. sinning is

  1692. of the

  1693. devil.

  1694. Three, verse

  1695. ten, by

  1696. this it is

  1697. evident who

  1698. are the

  1699. children of

  1700. God and

  1701. who are the

  1702. children of

  1703. the devil.

  1704. Whoever

  1705. does not

  1706. practice

  1707. righteousness

  1708. is not

  1709. of God,

  1710. nor is

  1711. the one

  1712. who does

  1713. not love

  1714. his

  1715. brother.

  1716. If you're

  1717. tempted to

  1718. follow those

  1719. who abandon

  1720. Jesus, well

  1721. just consider

  1722. where do you

  1723. see the

  1724. power that

  1725. produces

  1726. godliness at

  1727. work?

  1728. Is it in

  1729. those who've

  1730. departed?

  1731. Or is

  1732. it in

  1733. those who

  1734. remain?

  1735. Is it in

  1736. those who

  1737. turn their

  1738. back on

  1739. Christ?

  1740. Or is

  1741. it among

  1742. those who

  1743. cling to

  1744. Jesus still?

  1745. You'll find

  1746. perfection in

  1747. neither place,

  1748. that there are

  1749. no perfect

  1750. people this

  1751. side of

  1752. Jesus'

  1753. return, but

  1754. you will

  1755. discern a

  1756. different power,

  1757. I believe,

  1758. at work in

  1759. each?

  1760. Where do

  1761. you see

  1762. malice and

  1763. spite and

  1764. vitriol?

  1765. And where

  1766. do you see

  1767. those who,

  1768. where do you

  1769. find those who

  1770. prize patience

  1771. and gentleness?

  1772. Where do you

  1773. see reckless

  1774. living and

  1775. coarse language?

  1776. And where

  1777. soberness and

  1778. wholesome speech?

  1779. Think,

  1780. where is the

  1781. power that

  1782. produces

  1783. godliness at

  1784. work?

  1785. You know, I

  1786. look around the

  1787. community of

  1788. those who

  1789. cling to

  1790. Christ and

  1791. I see the

  1792. power that

  1793. produces

  1794. godliness at

  1795. work.

  1796. I can think

  1797. back over the

  1798. course of my

  1799. 35 years as a

  1800. Christian and

  1801. one of the

  1802. things that has

  1803. drawn me on

  1804. is in each

  1805. church I've

  1806. been, in each

  1807. place I've

  1808. been, to see

  1809. those who are

  1810. further along the

  1811. path and to

  1812. see how their

  1813. lives have been

  1814. transformed.

  1815. I think of

  1816. when I was in

  1817. high school,

  1818. Ruth Howard,

  1819. now Ruth

  1820. Flanagan, who

  1821. was a high

  1822. school teacher.

  1823. I was lost.

  1824. She was full of

  1825. kindness and the

  1826. joy of the

  1827. spirit, a life

  1828. transformed.

  1829. I think when I

  1830. was at

  1831. Willoughby,

  1832. Anglican Church,

  1833. of Paul

  1834. Bayliss, the

  1835. minister, a

  1836. humble man, a

  1837. man of faith, a

  1838. man who lived

  1839. on his knees

  1840. in prayer, and

  1841. of Sheila

  1842. Spencer, an

  1843. evangelist who

  1844. loved God's

  1845. word with a

  1846. heart for the

  1847. lost, lives

  1848. transformed.

  1849. At

  1850. Erinner, I

  1851. think of

  1852. Margaret Dodd,

  1853. a retired

  1854. woman who

  1855. we were meeting

  1856. in a high

  1857. school and

  1858. she'd come in

  1859. each morning and

  1860. clean the high

  1861. school toilets

  1862. for the sake

  1863. of the church.

  1864. And

  1865. Royce Warner,

  1866. in his final

  1867. years, who

  1868. could hardly see

  1869. anything before

  1870. his eyes and

  1871. yet he could

  1872. see heaven.

  1873. Lives

  1874. transformed.

  1875. At

  1876. Narenburn, I

  1877. think of Reg

  1878. Becker, faithful

  1879. until the end,

  1880. now with the

  1881. Lord.

  1882. When I've

  1883. preached this

  1884. message in other

  1885. churches, the

  1886. example I gave

  1887. at this point

  1888. was not from

  1889. churches I've

  1890. been at in the

  1891. past, but

  1892. from here.

  1893. You know,

  1894. someone here, I

  1895. won't name them

  1896. because I

  1897. think that would

  1898. probably embarrass

  1899. them, but you

  1900. know, you can

  1901. go and look it

  1902. up online if you

  1903. like.

  1904. But just think,

  1905. here among us,

  1906. right, even here

  1907. among us, consider

  1908. those who have

  1909. remained in Christ

  1910. 50, 60

  1911. years, or even

  1912. more, the

  1913. senior brothers and

  1914. sisters among

  1915. us, who have

  1916. something better to

  1917. live for than the

  1918. fleeting pleasures of

  1919. this life, who have

  1920. endured hardship and

1921. loss, who are sound in

  1922. speech and upright in

  1923. conduct, who serve with

  1924. what strength God gives

1925. them as long as they

1926. can, and who wait in

  1927. hope for Christ's return.

  1928. And just consider men

  1929. and women, brothers and

  1930. sisters, lives transformed

1931. by the reality of who

1932. they are, the reality of

1933. what they will be, and

  1934. the reality of what

  1935. Christ has done.

1936. And all that is just the

  1937. first fruits.

1938. All that is just the

  1939. beginning of the

  1940. splendour which Christ is

  1941. working in us.

  1942. So if you're disheartened

  1943. about your progress in

  1944. godliness, if you're

  1945. discouraged at the

  1946. slowness of your

  1947. sanctification, continue

  1948. in him.

1949. For you will bear your

  1950. father's likeness, and you

1951. will be like your Lord, and

1952. what Christ has done will

1953. have its full effect in

  1954. you.

  1955. come, stay.

1956. Will you pray with me?

  1957. Heavenly Father, what a

  1958. tremendous privilege, even

1959. that, that we can call you

1960. our father, and that we are

1961. your children, born of you.

1962. Lord, please do produce in

1963. us the likeness of your

  1964. righteousness.

1965. We thank you for sending

1966. your son, Jesus Christ, for

1967. the testimony we have of

  1968. him.

1969. And thank you that we don't

1970. only have testimony, but one

1971. day we will see him face to

  1972. face.

1973. We will see him as he is, and

1974. in that moment, we will be

  1975. transformed.

1976. And so purify us, even

1977. now, make us more like our

  1978. Lord.

1979. And we thank you for what

1980. Christ has done through his

  1981. death and resurrection, that

1982. he came to take away sins.

1983. Well, Father, please take away

  1984. sin from our lives.

  1985. As we are completely

  1986. forgiven, so sanctify and

  1987. transform us.

1988. Help us to cling to Jesus

  1989. throughout whatever ups and

1990. downs and hardships life may

  1991. bring, and whatever

  1992. temptations, whatever

  1993. opposition, however often

1994. those who have departed will

1995. beckon to those who to remain,

  1996. follow us.

1997. Help us to cling to Christ, to

1998. abide in him, to remain in him,

  1999. until he comes.

2000. We ask all of this in Jesus'

  2001. name.

  2002. Amen.

  2003. Amen.

  2004. Amen.

  2005. Amen.

  2006. Amen.

  2007. Amen.

  2008. Amen.

  2009. Amen.

  2010. Amen.

  2011. Amen.

  2012. Amen.

  2013. Amen.

  2014. Amen.

  2015. Amen.

  2016. Amen.

  2017. Amen.

  2018. Amen.
