  1. Okay, Book of Acts, chapter 9, starting at verse 1.

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  2. But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord,

  3. went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus,

  4. so that if he found anyone belonging to the way, men or women,

  5. he might bring them down to Jerusalem.

  6. Now, as he went on his way, he approached Damascus,

  7. and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him,

  8. and falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him,

  9. Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

  10. And he said, Who are you, Lord?

  11. And he said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

  12. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.

  13. The men who were traveling with him stood speechless,

  14. hearing the voice but seeing no one.

  15. Saul rose from the grounds, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing.

  16. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.

  17. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

  18. Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias.

  19. And the Lord said to him in a vision, Ananias.

  20. And he said, Here I am, Lord.

  21. And the Lord said to him, Rise and go to the street called Straight,

  22. and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul.

  23. For behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay hands on him

  24. so that he might regain his sight.

  25. But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many about this man,

  26. how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.

  27. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.

  28. But the Lord said to him, Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine

  29. to carry my name before the Gentiles and the kings and the children of Israel.

  30. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.

  31. So Ananias departed and entered the house, and laying his hands on him, he said,

  32. Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you came,

  33. has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  34. And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight.

  35. Then he rose and was baptized, and taking food, he was strengthened.

  36. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus, and immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues,

  37. saying, He is the Son of God.

  38. And all who heard him were amazed, and said,

  39. Is this not the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name?

  40. And has he not come here for the purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?

  41. But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus,

  42. by proving that Jesus was the Christ.

  43. When many days had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him.

  44. But their plot became known to Saul.

  45. They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him.

  46. But his disciples took him by night and led him down through an opening in the wall,

  47. lowering him in a basket.

  48. And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples, and they were all afraid of him,

  49. for they did not believe that he was a disciple.

  50. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord,

  51. who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

  52. So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord.

  53. And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists, but they were seeking to kill him.

  54. And when the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

  55. So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and were being built up.

  56. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

  57. This is God's word to us today.

  58. May we be blessed.

  59. Good morning, everyone.

  60. Will you pray with me as we come to God's word?

  61. Let's pray.

  62. Father, I pray that wherever we're at, that you would meet us,

  63. even as powerfully as you met Saul that day.

  64. Lord, I know my words can't do that, but I also know your word can.

  65. And so I pray that you would give us listening ears to your word.

  66. In Jesus' name I pray.

  67. Amen.

  68. Well, I wonder what picture you have of a person who is just desperately lost.

  69. They're just so far away from salvation, from believing in Jesus.

  70. What kind of person does your imagination ponder up?

  71. Is it someone who's just addicted to some substance or gambling or something and their life is spiralling down and down?

  72. Is it that sort of testimony, that kind of person you think of?

  73. When I saw the image of a missionary we keep in contact with, where you're just in Myanmar,

  74. of this hall full of people blindfolded 24-7 basically, not talking to each other,

  75. just trying to get rid of all desire.

  76. They've never even heard of Jesus.

  77. They just look like statues just sitting there.

  78. Is that the kind of picture of someone, whoa, they are desperately lost?

  79. Maybe you picture someone who's just obsessed with their money or their achievements or their beauty.

  80. They're just trying to prove themselves day in and day out.

  81. Maybe that's the kind of person you picture is desperately lost.

  82. Could someone being desperately lost look more like what you and I are doing right now?

  83. Is that possible?

  84. That what you and I, myself included, even preaching or sitting and attending church,

  85. is it possible that is close to a picture of someone really, really lost?

  86. Well, in our time in Acts, this term, we have seen Jesus' unstoppable word of salvation go out.

  87. And it's happened through such unlikely means.

  88. It's the death of Stephen and persecution that has spread his people out into Judea and Samaria.

  89. And it's brought in the most unlikely people.

  90. People who have been hostile to God for centuries, the Samaritans, but they're now reconciled.

  91. They're brought in.

  92. People who think, like the eunuch, they will never, ever, ever be allowed to come into God's place.

  93. But they get that embrace of Jesus.

  94. So the most unlikely people.

  95. But if we've got all this good news, and if we've, in all this good news,

  96. we might have forgotten what's actually going on in the landscape.

  97. There is a huge threat.

  98. And Luke reminds us of that in verse 1.

  99. And Saul is still breathing out threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord.

  100. He was there giving approval to Stephen's death.

  101. So when it says murder, Luke's not exaggerating.

  102. Saul is a picture of someone who is incredibly lost.

  103. Today we're going to see just how unstoppable Jesus' grace is.

  104. I think I want to take us through.

  105. I think we see three things in this passage.

  106. We see that his grace is so unstoppable that it can take someone who thinks they're on the right path

  107. and just doesn't want to hear a word about it

  108. and turn them into someone who willingly suffers for Jesus.

  109. We're going to see that even with that profound change in Saul,

  110. that the church had a real hard time accepting him.

  111. The grace that they loved to have for themselves,

  112. it was really hard to accept someone else.

  113. And I think we also see the transformation in Saul's life.

  114. When people saw him and heard him,

  115. they just couldn't deny it.

  116. He's just such a testimony to the grace of God found in Jesus

  117. that they just couldn't deny it.

  118. They didn't know what to do with it.

  119. So that's where we're headed this morning.

  120. Saul is the picture of the most lost person you can imagine.

  121. Let's imagine Saul on the road that day.

  122. Your law, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.

  123. That's how the Old Testament describes the law.

  124. It's a lamp for my path.

  125. I am walking the right way on the road to Damascus.

  126. We find out when he talks about his conversion later on,

  127. it is the middle of the day.

  128. He's in the noonday sun.

  129. He thinks he's walking on the right path to God.

  130. I know God approves of me.

  131. I am surpassing my peers in knowledge of the Scriptures.

  132. I'm surpassing my peers in obedience to the requirements of the law.

  133. And now I'm surpassing my peers in holy zeal.

  134. I am leading the way for the honour of your name, God.

  135. For the honour of Moses.

  136. For the honour of the temple.

  137. For the honour of your son, Israel.

  138. I'm just burning with passion.

  139. How dare they claim that Moses pointed to this man.

  140. Have they not read Moses?

  141. Cursed is everyone who's hung on a tree.

  142. How dare they say that?

  143. How dare they claim that a temple now points to a human being?

  144. And I hear that they're even allowing Samaritans and eunuchs to come in,

  145. as unclean as they are.

  146. They're profaning the high priest.

  147. They're profaning the sacrifices.

  148. How we can be made right with God.

  149. How dare they claim that the Holy Spirit has come.

  150. The Spirit would never, ever lead people to worship a human being.

  151. Zeal for you consumes me.

  152. I'm like Phineas who sees this blasphemy for what it is.

  153. I want to throw a spear through it.

  154. He is so sure he's on the right path.

  155. God bless my trip.

  156. Now this isn't in scripture, okay?

  157. Bless my trip.

  158. As the noonday sun lights my path,

  159. as you stoned that blasphemous Stephen,

  160. bless me.

  161. Help me capture every man and woman

  162. to get rid of this,

  163. this heresy,

  164. those who follow the way.

  165. And in the noonday sun,

  166. it's an even greater light.

  167. Knocks him to the ground.

  168. He thought he was righteous

  169. until he saw this light.

  170. He saw the righteous one.

  171. He heard a voice saying,

  172. Saul,

  173. Saul,

  174. why are you persecuting me?

  175. Who are you, Lord?

  176. I am Jesus,

  177. whom you

  178. are persecuting.

  179. Now he was sure

  180. he was on the righteous path.

  181. He could see where he was going.

  182. Now he's blind.

  183. But he was sure

  184. he was leading the way

  185. and now he's got to be led by the hand.

  186. He once fasted

  187. to observe the law.

  188. He is so struck

  189. by this experience.

  190. For three days,

  191. he's just,

  192. he's just,

  193. he's just dismantled

  194. to the core.

  195. He doesn't think of eating

  196. and drinking.

  197. He's just so overwhelmed

  198. by who he has seen.

  199. And he's sitting in darkness.

  200. Just,

  201. he's broken down.

  202. His world is broken down.

  203. His idea of God

  204. is broken down.

  205. His idea of himself

  206. being right with God

  207. and who he is.

  208. He's just broken down

  209. and he's sitting in darkness.

  210. And I just,

  211. the last thing

  212. that's just burned

  213. into his image

  214. is seeing Jesus.

  215. And he's got three days.

  216. Think about that.

  217. Think about that.

  218. Think about that.

  219. Think about that.

  220. I think he experiences

  221. a kind of death

  222. for those three days.

  223. I want to pause here.

  224. If you think

  225. becoming a Christian

  226. is committing

  227. to a lifestyle,

  228. if you think

  229. that's what the call

  230. of Christianity is,

  231. come and live

  232. this lifestyle,

  233. I hope that idea dies.

  234. See the conversion

  235. of Saul.

  236. it is not putting

  237. on a lifestyle.

  238. It's actually

  239. being confronted

  240. by a Jesus

  241. that actually

  242. breaks you down

  243. to the core

  244. of your being.

  245. It's being confronted

  246. with a God

  247. who is there.

  248. He's bigger

  249. than your ideas

  250. of him.

  251. There's some things

  252. about him

  253. that you won't

  254. like

  255. because

  256. he's there.

  257. He's bigger

  258. than your own

  259. thoughts

  260. and your own

  261. desires

  262. of what you

  263. want God

  264. to be.

  265. And Saul

  266. encountered that

  267. God.

  268. We all must

  269. encounter him.

  270. That's conversion.

  271. Encountering

  272. a Jesus

  273. who is there

  274. and he breaks

  275. you first.

  276. I just wonder

  277. what was going

  278. through Saul's

  279. mind

  280. for those

  281. three days.

  282. Jesus really

  283. is alive.

  284. He's alive.

  285. He's in heaven.

  286. He can enter

  287. this world

  288. whenever he pleases

  289. as if it's

  290. his world.

  291. His glory

  292. outshines

  293. the sun.

  294. It has blinded

  295. me.

  296. He chose

  297. to remove

  298. my sight.

  299. He's given

  300. me a vision

  301. that a man

  302. that I came

  303. to arrest

  304. and maybe

  305. beat,

  306. maybe kill

  307. is going

  308. to come

  309. and restore

  310. my sight.

  311. He can

  312. choose when

  313. to take

  314. my sight

  315. and when

  316. to give

  317. it.

  318. And yet

  319. he died.

  320. I know

  321. he died.

  322. He was

  323. cursed

  324. on that

  325. tree.

  326. But he's

  327. vindicated.

  328. God has

  329. vindicated

  330. him.

  331. If he's

  332. vindicated,

  333. that curse

  334. mustn't have

  335. been for

  336. him.

  337. His sin,

  338. it must

  339. have been

  340. for others.

  341. I thought

  342. I was

  343. righteous.

  344. I thought

  345. I was doing

  346. what God

  347. wanted,

  348. but oh

  349. my goodness,

  350. I'm

  351. actually raging

  352. against the

  353. Lord and

  354. his anointed.

  355. God

  356. wanted to

  357. be

  358. corrected.

  359. Now who

  360. knows what

  361. he was

  362. thinking.

  363. I'm kind

  364. of just

  365. piecing

  366. things

  367. together

  368. from other

  369. things he's

  370. written later

  371. on.

  372. God

  373. said,

  374. but Jesus'

  375. unstoppable

  376. grace,

  377. it first

  378. strips

  379. Paul down

  380. of his

  381. self-righteousness,

  382. of his

  383. goodness.

  384. goodness.

  385. I like

  386. John Bunyan's

  387. hymn.

  388. John Bunyan,

  389. I don't know if

  390. you know the

  391. name, he wrote

  392. Pilgrim's

  393. Progress.

  394. And he

  395. wrote this

  396. hymn,

  397. nothing

  398. either great

  399. or small,

  400. nothing sinner,

  401. no.

  402. Jesus did

  403. it, did it

  404. all long,

  405. long ago.

  406. doing,

  407. that doing

  408. to prove

  409. yourself,

  410. is a

  411. deadly

  412. thing.

  413. Doing

  414. ends in

  415. death.

  416. Cast your

  417. deadly

  418. doing down,

  419. down at

  420. Jesus'

  421. feet.

  422. Stand in

  423. him, in

  424. him alone,

  425. gloriously.

  426. That's where

  427. Saul had to

  428. get to.

  429. He thought

  430. all his

  431. doing was

  432. walking in

  433. the light,

  434. but being

  435. confronted with

  436. the Jesus

  437. who was

  438. there.

  439. He had to

  440. lay that

  441. doing down

  442. and admit

  443. it's a

  444. deadly

  445. thing and

  446. look to the

  447. righteousness

  448. that outshines

  449. the noonday

  450. sun.

  451. God's

  452. God's

  453. grace.

  454. God's

  455. grace is

  456. really wonderful,

  457. and it can

  458. even save

  459. someone like

  460. Saul,

  461. someone as

  462. lost as

  463. him,

  464. but maybe

  465. you're

  466. listening to

  467. this and

  468. you just

  469. say this.

  470. It's too

  471. hard for me

  472. to accept

  473. that I'm

  474. too far gone. My conscience plagues me.

  475. Doubt heals me.

  476. I want to consider

  477. what Saul had to do to receive his salvation.

  478. What did he do to get

  479. Jesus' attention?

  480. Did he do anything to make Jesus take a step towards him?

  481. Did Jesus turn up and say,

  482. Hey, Saul, I just want to ask your permission to

  483. stop you in your tracks and reveal

  484. how glorious I am. Is that okay?

  485. Saul did nothing.

  486. Jesus' grace is unstoppable. It is so free.

  487. There is nothing Saul did

  488. that warranted Jesus coming to save him.

  489. It is that free. It has zero to do with Saul.

  490. I think that's a comforting thought if you're thinking grace is too much for me because it's not about me.

  491. His grace is just so free.

  492. It's even for Saul.

  493. And that's what he says in 1 Timothy 1

    1 Timothy 1:15–16

  494. verses 15 to 16.

  495. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.

  496. We need to fully accept what he's about to say.

  497. This is scripture.

  498. That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,

  499. of whom I am the foremost.

  500. That I receive mercy for this reason,

  501. that in me, as the foremost,

  502. Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience,

  503. his long-suffering,

  504. as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

  505. If you're thinking,

  506. yes, mercy is enough for Saul,

  507. but not me,

  508. you need to accept what God says.

  509. Saul's conversion is saying,

  510. look at his perfect patience.

  511. It's even for you.

  512. It's even for me.

  513. So Saul's experience,

  514. it is unique.

  515. Like,

  516. not even the other apostles

  517. get the risen,

  518. glorified Jesus

  519. coming to them like this,

  520. that we know of.

  521. His experience is unique,

  522. but

  523. he's given to us

  524. as an example

  525. of the grace of Jesus,

  526. of what it means to be changed by him.

  527. So I think you can know

  528. you've encountered this Jesus,

  529. this same Jesus,

  530. if

  531. he's broken down

  532. your ideas of who you want him to be.

  533. If he's just confronted you,

  534. that he's there.

  535. You can know you've met this Jesus

  536. if he's humbled you to the dust,

  537. where you lose confidence in self and doing.

  538. You can know you've met this Jesus

  539. if

  540. his grace is even enough

  541. for someone like Saul,

  542. even someone like me.

  543. Because when you meet this Jesus,

  544. as Saul did,

  545. it can't help but change you.

  546. It removes self

  547. from the centre of our life

  548. and Saul becomes

  549. a willing

  550. servant

  551. who patiently suffers

  552. for Jesus' sake

  553. so that others might be saved.

  554. Huge transformation,

  555. which we're going to come to a bit later as well.

  556. So unstoppable grace.

  557. But this

  558. unstoppable grace,

  559. it's wonderful for yourself,

  560. but it can be terribly hard

  561. to accept for others

  562. in the church.

  563. Others who believe.

  564. I'm sure many of you

  565. have read

  566. or heard about

  567. Corrie Ten Boom.

  568. She's just so encouraging.

  569. I'm going to use her

  570. as an illustration again.

  571. I'm sure many preachers have.

  572. She lived through

  573. the Holocaust

  574. and after giving

  575. a talk

  576. on God's forgiveness

  577. in Germany

  578. in 1947.

  579. So this is

  580. fresh,

  581. 1947.

  582. So after she gives

  583. this talk

  584. in the crowd,

  585. she says this,

  586. that's when I saw him.

  587. It came back

  588. with a rush,

  589. the huge room

  590. with its harsh

  591. overhead lights,

  592. the pathetic

  593. pile of dresses

  594. and shoes

  595. in the centre

  596. of the floor,

  597. the shame

  598. of walking

  599. naked

  600. past this man.

  601. I could see

  602. my sister's

  603. frail form

  604. ahead of me,

  605. ribs sharp

  606. beneath the

  607. parchment skin.

  608. Betsy,

  609. how thin you were.

  610. Betsy and I

  611. had been arrested

  612. for concealing Jews

  613. in our home

  614. during the Nazi

  615. occupation of Holland.

  616. This man had been

  617. a guard

  618. at Ravensbrook

  619. concentration camp

  620. where we were sent.

  621. and he comes up,

  622. you mentioned

  623. Ravensbrook

  624. in your talk,

  625. he was saying.

  626. I was a guard

  627. there.

  628. He did not

  629. remember me.

  630. But since that time,

  631. he went on,

  632. I have become

  633. a Christian.

  634. I know that God

  635. has forgiven me

  636. for the cruel

  637. things I did

  638. there.

  639. And the hand

  640. came out,

  641. will you

  642. forgive me?

  643. Would you

  644. take that hand?

  645. your sister

  646. having died there.

  647. Ananias,

  648. going back

  649. to the story here,

  650. Ananias is a

  651. follower of Jesus.

  652. He is ready

  653. to obey the Lord.

  654. Here I am,

  655. Lord.

  656. He's ready.

  657. And Jesus says,

  658. go to Saul.

  659. He's expecting you.

  660. And he's got the guts

  661. to say,

  662. him,

  663. like,

  664. can I change

  665. your mind,

  666. please?

  667. I'm not,

  668. I've received

  669. your forgiving

  670. grace.

  671. Him?

  672. He's struggling

  673. to accept this.

  674. And I'm not sure,

  675. I'm,

  676. I don't know

  677. whether the Lord's

  678. reply comforted him

  679. or made it worse.

  680. I'm not sure.

  681. Saul.

  682. Because not only

  683. is there no limits

  684. on his forgiveness,

  685. he says,

  686. I've chosen Saul

  687. to be my chosen

  688. instrument to bring

  689. salvation to many

  690. in my name.

  691. I'm just putting

  692. myself in Ananias'

  693. shoe here,

  694. and maybe he's not

  695. as a proud man

  696. as I am.

  697. Him.

  698. He's your chosen

  699. instrument.

  700. So there's no

  701. limits to your

  702. forgiveness,

  703. and you've chosen

  704. him to be,

  705. to play this

  706. massive role

  707. in your plan.

  708. To obey the Lord

  709. at this point,

  710. Ananias had to

  711. overcome his fear

  712. of Saul.

  713. Like,

  714. he's got legal

  715. authority to arrest

  716. him.

  717. He has to overcome

  718. any commitment

  719. to seeing justice

  720. done.

  721. So he's got to

  722. overcome fear,

  723. it's got to

  724. overcome any

  725. desire for

  726. seeing justice

  727. done to him.

  728. And maybe

  729. it's got to

  730. even overcome

  731. a sense of

  732. inferiority,

  733. that Saul

  734. and not him

  735. would play a

  736. bigger part

  737. in Jesus'

  738. mission.

  739. He's got to

  740. let go of his

  741. own name,

  742. in a sense.

  743. And those in

  744. Jerusalem we hear,

  745. they had a big,

  746. they had a hard

  747. time accepting

  748. Saul as well.

  749. And maybe it

  750. was extra

  751. personal for

  752. them because

  753. remember that

  754. great lamentation

  755. given for Stephen

  756. when he died

  757. and Saul was

  758. the one approving

  759. of his death.

  760. Did Stephen

  761. have a family

  762. there in the

  763. church?

  764. They loved

  765. Stephen so

  766. much.

  767. It was their

  768. family members

  769. who were

  770. scattered.

  771. out, they

  772. couldn't spend

  773. time together

  774. anymore because

  775. of this man's

  776. persecution.

  777. Could they

  778. allow him

  779. in?

  780. Could they

  781. forgive?

  782. Let me go back

  783. to Corey.

  784. He says,

  785. as I stood

  786. there, I

  787. whose sins

  788. had every

  789. day to be

  790. forgiven and

  791. could not.

  792. Betsy had

  793. died in that

  794. place.

  795. Could he

  796. erase her

  797. slow, terrible

  798. death simply

  799. for the asking,

  800. asking of

  801. forgiveness?

  802. It could not

  803. have been many

  804. seconds that he

  805. stood there,

  806. hand held

  807. out, but to

  808. me it seemed

  809. hours as I

  810. wrestled with the

  811. most difficult

  812. thing I had

  813. ever had to

  814. do.

  815. Jesus helped

  816. me, I

  817. prayed silently.

  818. And so,

  819. excuse me,

  820. woodenly,

  821. mechanically,

  822. I thrust my

  823. hand into the

  824. one stretch out

  825. to me and as

  826. I did, an

  827. incredible thing

  828. took place.

  829. The current

  830. started in my

  831. shoulder and

  832. raced down my

  833. arm, sprang

  834. into our

  835. joined hands.

  836. And then

  837. this healing

  838. warmth and

  839. love for him

  840. flood my

  841. whole being,

  842. bringing tears

  843. to my eyes.

  844. I forgive

  845. you, brother.

  846. For a long

  847. moment, we

  848. grasped each

  849. other's hands,

  850. the former

  851. guard and the

  852. former prisoner.

  853. I had never

  854. known God's

  855. love so

  856. intensely as I

  857. did then.

  858. Ananias, he

  859. doesn't go

  860. begrudgingly.

  861. He lays his

  862. hand on him.

  863. I think it's a

  864. similar scene and

  865. he says,

  866. brother.

  867. He embraces

  868. Saul.

  869. Brother.

  870. He could have

  871. just said,

  872. oh, I don't

  873. want to be here

  874. but Jesus sent

  875. me, I have to

  876. do this.

  877. There's

  878. warmth here.

  879. Brother.

  880. When his

  881. life is

  882. threatened,

  883. twice, they

  884. don't let him

  885. get what he

  886. deserves.

  887. They save

  888. him.

  889. Wow.

  890. They embrace

  891. Saul as

  892. their own.

  893. There might

  894. be someone,

  895. can you think

  896. of someone you

  897. just, you're

  898. struggling to

  899. forgive or you're

  900. struggling to

  901. embrace?

  902. Maybe there's

  903. someone at

  904. church you

  905. avoid.

  906. You avoid eye

  907. contact.

  908. You avoid

  909. talking to

  910. them after the

  911. service.

  912. maybe it's a

  913. group of

  914. people from

  915. your past.

  916. I don't

  917. think we

  918. have the

  919. resources.

  920. I didn't

  921. tell the

  922. story of

  923. Corrie and

  924. she says

  925. herself, I'm

  926. not saying

  927. that we

  928. have the

  929. resources to

  930. forgive.

  931. The point

  932. is we

  933. don't.

  934. The point

  935. is his

  936. grace is

  937. sufficient for

  938. us to

  939. forgive.

  940. He's got

  941. the power to

  942. overcome that

  943. fear and

  944. that demand

  945. for justice,

  946. that protection

  947. of our own

  948. name.

  949. We've got to

  950. love his

  951. grace even

  952. more than

  953. those things.

  954. And there's

  955. a powerful

  956. witness, isn't

  957. it?

  958. Saul going

  959. in and out

  960. in Jerusalem.

  961. Wow.

  962. You can

  963. testify to

  964. the grace of

  965. God as an

  966. individual.

  967. You can

  968. testify even

  969. more, I

  970. think, when

  971. this is a

  972. place of

  973. forgiveness,

  974. grace.

  975. Jesus'

  976. unstoppable

  977. grace turns

  978. Saul into

  979. a suffering

  980. servant.

  981. It even

  982. overcomes the

  983. most difficult,

  984. perhaps the

  985. most difficult

  986. thing in the

  987. world to

  988. do,

  989. forgiving

  990. others and

  991. giving grace

  992. to others.

  993. And Saul's

  994. transformed life

  995. and his

  996. teaching is

  997. undeniable.

  998. people.

  999. Imagine that

  1000. scene when he

  1001. goes into the

  1002. synagogue and

  1003. he stands up

  1004. there and his

  1005. reputation, they

  1006. all know him.

  1007. He's come with

  1008. license, with a

  1009. letter to take

  1010. people to

  1011. prison in

  1012. Jerusalem.

  1013. Later he says

  1014. he had beaten

  1015. many of the

  1016. believers, men

  1017. and women.

  1018. Imagine their

  1019. shock when he

  1020. stands up.

  1021. I don't know if

  1022. there was a

  1023. pulpit or not,

  1024. a historian has

  1025. to tell me

  1026. later.

  1027. He is the

  1028. son of God.

  1029. Sorry.

  1030. And then he's

  1031. filled with the

  1032. spirit so much

  1033. and he increases

  1034. with strength that

  1035. he confounds the

  1036. Jews who lived in

  1037. Damascus by

  1038. proving, I

  1039. assume by proving

  1040. from the Old

  1041. Testament

  1042. scriptures, that

  1043. Jesus was the

  1044. Christ.

  1045. They can't

  1046. argue with

  1047. him, with

  1048. his words, and

  1049. even more than

  1050. that, they

  1051. can't argue

  1052. with him.

  1053. How do I

  1054. account for this

  1055. change?

  1056. He embodies

  1057. the gospel.

  1058. He's not just

  1059. saying it, he

  1060. embodies it.

  1061. Jesus says to

  1062. Ananias that he

  1063. must suffer.

  1064. He must suffer

  1065. for the sake of

  1066. my name.

  1067. I don't think

  1068. that must

  1069. there is for

  1070. the sake of

  1071. punishment.

  1072. I think it's a

  1073. willing must,

  1074. that grace has

  1075. gripped him so

  1076. much that he

  1077. willingly chooses

  1078. this way of

  1079. suffering.

  1080. He chose to

  1081. enter that

  1082. synagogue and

  1083. proclaim Jesus

  1084. boldly.

  1085. He has threats

  1086. against his

  1087. life and he

  1088. goes to

  1089. Jerusalem.

  1090. This guy

  1091. knows firsthand.

  1092. He led the

  1093. way of

  1094. persecuting.

  1095. He knows

  1096. the kind of

  1097. hatred and

  1098. he does it

  1099. again.

  1100. He's

  1101. willingly

  1102. choosing this

  1103. path.

  1104. I'm going to

  1105. use his own

  1106. words in

  1107. chapter 20 when

  1108. he's calling

  1109. the Ephesian

  1110. elders,

  1111. follow my

  1112. example.

  1113. That's the

  1114. context here and

  1115. he's saying,

  1116. I'm going to

  1117. Jerusalem,

  1118. this is at a

  1119. later point,

  1120. constrained by

  1121. the Spirit,

  1122. not knowing what

  1123. will happen to

  1124. me there except

  1125. that the Holy

  1126. Spirit testifies to

  1127. me in every

  1128. city that

  1129. imprisonment and

  1130. afflictions await

  1131. me.

  1132. But I do not

  1133. account my life of

  1134. any value nor as

  1135. precious to myself.

  1136. If only I may

  1137. finish my course

  1138. in the ministry

  1139. that I receive

  1140. from the Lord

  1141. Jesus to testify

  1142. to the gospel of

  1143. the grace of

  1144. God.

  1145. Like in that

  1146. situation a

  1147. prophet comes and

  1148. uses a belt to

  1149. bind him and

  1150. says, this is

  1151. what's going to

  1152. happen to the

  1153. man who owns

  1154. this belt.

  1155. And still he

  1156. goes.

  1157. He's going

  1158. willingly.

  1159. I'm ready to

  1160. die in

  1161. Jerusalem.

  1162. This must

  1163. suffer for my

  1164. name.

  1165. I don't think

  1166. it's punishment.

  1167. I think it's a

  1168. willingness.

  1169. He's seen the

  1170. risen Lord.

  1171. He's seen that

  1172. true glory,

  1173. true righteousness

  1174. is willingly

  1175. choosing to

  1176. suffer so that

  1177. others live.

  1178. That's

  1179. greatness.

  1180. This grace has

  1181. changed him.

  1182. And those who

  1183. saw him and

  1184. listened to him,

  1185. they couldn't

  1186. deny it.

  1187. What do they do

  1188. with him?

  1189. His words are

  1190. just so

  1191. reasonable.

  1192. His life

  1193. is even

  1194. harder to

  1195. explain.

  1196. How do we

  1197. explain a

  1198. man who

  1199. was so

  1200. self-righteous

  1201. and violent

  1202. and violent,

  1203. who loved

  1204. his own

  1205. name,

  1206. now denying

  1207. himself,

  1208. becoming tender

  1209. and putting,

  1210. risking his own

  1211. name so that

  1212. others might

  1213. live.

  1214. We can't

  1215. deny him.

  1216. We've got to

  1217. kill him.

  1218. testimony of

  1219. the grace of

  1220. Jesus is just

  1221. so in

  1222. their face.

  1223. Well, we

  1224. read in

  1225. verse 31,

  1226. So the

  1227. church

  1228. throughout

  1229. all Judea

  1230. and Galilee

  1231. and Samaria

  1232. had peace

  1233. and was

  1234. being built

  1235. up.

  1236. And walking

  1237. in the fear

  1238. of the Lord

  1239. and in the

  1240. comfort of

  1241. the Holy

  1242. Spirit,

  1243. it multiplied.

  1244. This

  1245. Jesus

  1246. is

  1247. unstoppable.

  1248. His

  1249. grace is

  1250. unstoppable.

  1251. He uses

  1252. persecution

  1253. to spread

  1254. his word

  1255. so that

  1256. others have

  1257. life,

  1258. Samaritans,

  1259. eunuchs.

  1260. And we

  1261. hear now

  1262. he removes

  1263. the threat

  1264. and gives

  1265. a time of

  1266. peace.

  1267. And in

  1268. that peace

  1269. he builds

  1270. up the

  1271. church.

  1272. You can't

  1273. stop him.

  1274. Persecute,

  1275. spread.

  1276. Give peace,

  1277. build up.

  1278. How are you

  1279. going to

  1280. stop this,

  1281. Jesus?

  1282. A group

  1283. of people

  1284. following

  1285. this way

  1286. who believe

  1287. that

  1288. suffering for

  1289. him for

  1290. others'

  1291. sake is

  1292. greatness.

  1293. How do you

  1294. stop that?

  1295. They

  1296. kill Jesus

  1297. and he

  1298. rises three

  1299. days later.

  1300. They

  1301. kill Stephen

  1302. and I

  1303. love the

  1304. detail here

  1305. that Saul

  1306. is now

  1307. speaking and

  1308. disputing with

  1309. the Hellenists,

  1310. the ones who

  1311. got Stephen

  1312. in trouble in

  1313. the first

  1314. place.

  1315. You kill

  1316. Stephen,

  1317. Saul takes

  1318. his place.

  1319. this Jesus

  1320. is the

  1321. same

  1322. today,

  1323. yesterday,

  1324. today and

  1325. forever.

  1326. He is

  1327. gathering

  1328. every lost

  1329. sheep,

  1330. even the

  1331. most desperate

  1332. runs like

  1333. Saul.

  1334. So I

  1335. hope,

  1336. I hope

  1337. you can

  1338. admit

  1339. you're a

  1340. lost sheep.

  1341. You're

  1342. desperately

  1343. lost.

  1344. lost.

  1345. Because

  1346. Jesus came

  1347. for people

  1348. like you.

  1349. I'd like

  1350. to do

  1351. something a

  1352. bit different

  1353. to finish,

  1354. to try and

  1355. help what

  1356. we've heard

  1357. today just

  1358. sink in and

  1359. have the

  1360. Lord's

  1361. Supper as

  1362. our

  1363. application.

  1364. We're

  1365. remembering

  1366. our

  1367. suffering

  1368. servants.

  1369. the

  1370. suffering

  1371. servant

  1372. who was

  1373. pierced

  1374. for our

  1375. transgressions

  1376. and crushed

  1377. for our

  1378. iniquities.

  1379. As we

  1380. eat and

  1381. drink this,

  1382. let's

  1383. remember what

  1384. we've seen

  1385. in our

  1386. passage today.

  1387. Lay your

  1388. deadly doing

  1389. down,

  1390. stand in

  1391. him and

  1392. him alone,

  1393. gloriously

  1394. complete.

  1395. God's

  1396. love.

  1397. He is our

  1398. suffering

  1399. servant and

  1400. he's calling

  1401. us to

  1402. the honour

  1403. of suffering

  1404. with him so

  1405. that others

  1406. might share

  1407. in the peace

  1408. and fellowship

  1409. that we have

  1410. with God

  1411. and one

  1412. another.

  1413. And may

  1414. we, as

  1415. we eat and

  1416. drink this,

  1417. may we give

  1418. the grace that

  1419. we so richly

  1420. feast on to

  1421. one another

  1422. as well.

  1423. So let's

  1424. eat and

  1425. drink.

  1426. come

  1427. amen for

  1428. our

  1429. life,

  1430. God said,

  1431. pray,

  1432. to

  1433. many
