  1. All right, we're going to have our Bible reading now, so if you want to grab out your Bibles and open up to 1 Corinthians.

  2. We'll be reading from chapter 2, starting at verse 1 through 2.16.

  3. And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.

  4. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  5. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling.

  6. And my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

  7. so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

  8. Yet among the mature, we do impart wisdom.

  9. Although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.

  10. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

  11. None of the rulers of this age understood this.

  12. For if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

  13. But as it is written,

  14. What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,

  15. what God has prepared for those who love him.

  16. These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

  17. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

  18. For who knows a person's thoughts except the Spirit of that person, which is in him?

  19. So also, no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

  20. Now we have received not the Spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God,

  21. that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

  22. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit,

  23. interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

  24. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God,

  25. for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them,

  26. because they are spiritually discerned.

  27. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.

  28. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?

  29. But we have the mind of Christ.

  30. Is it possible?

  31. Is it possible to make our church family division-proof?

  32. We think of all the differences that will have already arisen or will inevitably arise in the future,

  33. and wouldn't it be wonderful, given the history of churches,

  34. if we could say, yep, we can make our church division-proof?

  35. Is it possible to repair already broken relationships,

  36. dysfunctional relationships with fellow believers,

  37. which are an ongoing source of tension, a barrier to fellowship?

  38. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

  39. But it sounds unlikely, doesn't it?

  40. Especially when we examine our own hearts.

  41. And when we examine our own hearts, we find that our fears,

  42. our insecurities, our determination to win an argument,

  43. so often drives us to make self-protection,

  44. self-promotion dominant.

  45. And in turn, that blinds us to what we have in common in Christ.

  46. Last week, I picked up the idea that you may have a genuine desire

  47. to be a useful disciple of Jesus in this church family.

  48. To be Jesus-focused, to be gospel-shaped,

  49. to be wise, to make a significant impact for good as a believer in this church family.

  50. But then, I said last week,

  51. well, how does that happen?

  52. Do I actually have the skills and abilities to make that real,

  53. to deliver on that?

  54. Yes, I would love that to be the case.

  55. But can I actually be that person

  56. in this church family?

  57. What does it look like in practice?

  58. And all that's very hard,

  59. because we know how easily we become rusted on to personalities, don't we?

  60. It's just a plain fact that some people,

  61. we find it much easier to engage with some people over others.

  62. We're more attracted to one type of personality than another.

  63. So how can we have a church family that's not driven by that

  64. as we look into the future?

  65. Well, Paul says in his letter to the church at Corinth,

  66. and remember, it was a pretty dysfunctional church.

  67. All these issues were big issues in the church in Corinth.

  68. But Paul is saying to the church in Corinth,

  69. yes, it is possible.

  70. It's possible that all those things would be true.

  71. It is possible to be division-proof as a church family.

  72. Yes, you do have all the wisdom and power

  73. to be really useful in your interactions with people.

  74. Staying rusted on to Jesus

  75. while getting deeply and generously involved in the lives of others.

  76. Yes, it is possible.

  77. If only you remember who you are in Jesus,

  78. that you have it all in Jesus, chapter 1, verses 1 to 9.

  79. And if you live in the light of that, chapter 1, verses 10 to 31.

  80. Paul said to the church,

  81. look, you're defined individually and as a church family

  82. by relationship with Jesus,

  83. not by people around you.

  84. Your blessing and security is in Jesus,

  85. not in people or how they respond to you.

  86. And then we looked at verse 10, two weeks ago.

  87. Practically, in Jesus we're already,

  88. chapter 1, verse 10, that is,

  89. in Jesus we're already knitted together in unity,

  90. deep unity of status, mind and purpose.

  91. Just like a broken bone has been knit together.

  92. So we're stronger than the original bones.

  93. And Paul says again,

  94. that unity will flourish

  95. in a church family like this.

  96. That unity will flourish when we live,

  97. we build Jesus' empire,

  98. not our own.

  99. It sounds so easy, doesn't it?

  100. Yet so often we find ourselves building our own empire

  101. and being distracted from the core business

  102. of building Jesus' empire.

  103. Paul says it is possible when daily

  104. your old pre-Christian idea of being wise

  105. is replaced with God's wisdom,

  106. God's new way of thinking,

  107. God's new way of evaluating people.

  108. Jesus-shaped attitudes

  109. as you interact with people in this congregation,

  110. this church family.

  111. It's all there for us.

  112. And today, chapter 2, verses 1 to 16,

  113. Paul's saying that sort of deep unity

  114. will flourish as we operate in God's power

  115. rather than the world's power categories.

  116. Paul's point is very simple.

  117. Thinking and actions are inseparably tied.

  118. When hearts are shaped by God's wisdom,

  119. which is a new Jesus-shaped way of thinking

  120. about themselves and about others,

  121. that will overflow,

  122. those hearts will overflow

  123. in a new Jesus-shaped way of behaving

  124. and treating people

  125. and interacting with people in the church family.

  126. And that makes for useful and powerful

  127. involvement in this church family.

  128. Paul pivots from wisdom to power

  129. in chapter 1, verses 30 and 31.

  130. Let me read it to you again.

  131. From last week, we looked at this,

  132. but we'll read it again.

  133. Chapter 1, verse 31.

  134. Talking about Jesus,

  135. God is the source of your life

  136. in Christ Jesus,

  137. whom God made our wisdom

  138. and our righteousness

  139. and sanctification and redemption.

  140. Therefore, as it was written,

  141. let the one who boasts

  142. boast in the Lord.

  143. I think what those verses are saying

  144. is that the gospel shows us

  145. what really matters to the Lord.

  146. It shows us the categories

  147. that are first-order categories.

  148. And those first-order categories

  149. are righteousness.

  150. That is, right standing

  151. and acceptance before God

  152. and relationship with Him.

  153. Sanctification or holiness.

  154. That is about renewing us

  155. from inclination to rebel against God

  156. and giving us increased desire

  157. to live to please God.

  158. Redemption.

  159. Being forgiven.

  160. Being renewed.

  161. Freed from the power of sin

  162. at incredible cost to Jesus

  163. and the Father.

  164. Those are God's first-order categories.

  165. Those are the things that really matter.

  166. The gospel tells us

  167. those are the things

  168. that really matter to God.

  169. And Paul's point is this.

  170. When the believers at Corinth,

  171. as he was writing them to Corinth,

  172. and when we fully understand that,

  173. then actions will passionately overflow

  174. with those very things.

  175. that will be our shape.

  176. That will be our shape.

  177. That will be our shape

  178. individually.

  179. That will be our shape

  180. as a church family.

  181. And that's what we'll boast in

  182. rather than promoting self

  183. and seeking dominance or preeminence.

  184. And Paul presses his point

  185. from two angles in chapter 2.

  186. Verses 1 to 5, first of all,

  187. believers are already equipped

  188. with God's power.

  189. We saw two weeks ago

  190. that word is dynamite.

  191. Believers are already equipped

  192. with God's power

  193. in and through Jesus.

  194. Now, again,

  195. Paul's argument is linked back

  196. into chapter 1, verses 18 to 31.

  197. So if you look back to verse 18,

  198. for the word of the cross

  199. is folly to those who are perishing.

  200. That's the word there

  201. was folly, was moronic.

  202. The word of the cross

  203. is moronic to those

  204. who are perishing.

  205. But to us who are being saved,

  206. it is the power of God.

  207. The wisdom of God.

  208. The message of Christ crucified

  209. displays all of God's wisdom

  210. and power.

  211. That's a pretty incredible statement,

  212. isn't it?

  213. In other words,

  214. there's no more power,

  215. no more wisdom to be revealed.

  216. Verse 23 and 24,

  217. same sort of idea.

  218. For Jews demand signs

  219. and Greeks seek wisdom,

  220. but we preach Christ crucified,

  221. a stumbling block to Jews,

  222. folly to Gentiles,

  223. but to those who are called

  224. both Jews and Greeks,

  225. Christ the power of God

  226. and the wisdom of God.

  227. The spoken word of the gospel

  228. of Jesus crucified

  229. is God's power

  230. to save and renew.

  231. a power that each believer

  232. in Corinth

  233. had already experienced.

  234. A power that each believer here

  235. has already experienced.

  236. When you are converted,

  237. God's power

  238. is now within them,

  239. now within us.

  240. If only they would realize that.

  241. If only they would harness that.

  242. Paul then details

  243. what operating in God's power

  244. means for him

  245. in these first verses

  246. of chapter 2.

  247. Verse 1,

  248. operating in God's power

  249. actually determined

  250. his method.

  251. When I came to you,

  252. brothers,

  253. I did not come

  254. proclaiming to you

  255. the testimony of God

  256. with lofty speech

  257. or wisdom.

  258. In the days of,

  259. Paul was writing to you

  260. in Corinth,

  261. the way to get ahead

  262. as a clever speaker

  263. was to manipulate,

  264. to intimidate,

  265. to use spin or hype.

  266. Paul says,

  267. I refuse to use

  268. any of those things.

  269. I don't need to.

  270. I don't need to use

  271. those things

  272. to get the desired

  273. response to Jesus.

  274. For I decided

  275. to know nothing among you

  276. except Jesus Christ

  277. and him crucified.

  278. And I was with you

  279. in weakness

  280. and in fear

  281. and much trembling.

  282. And my speech

  283. and my message

  284. were not in plausible

  285. words of wisdom

  286. but in the demonstration

  287. of the spirit

  288. and power.

  289. It's not that Paul

  290. didn't try to persuade people.

  291. If we read the back story

  292. of the church

  293. implanted in Corinth,

  294. Acts chapter 18,

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  295. Paul tells us there

  296. that he did work as hard

  297. as to persuade people.

  298. The point is here

  299. that he doesn't think

  300. for a moment

  301. that his choice of words,

  302. the clear logic

  303. of his arguments

  304. or the smoothness

  305. of his presentation

  306. would save anybody.

  307. Verse 2 again,

  308. looking back to that.

  309. Determined his content.

  310. The power of God

  311. determined his content.

  312. The life,

  313. death and resurrection

  314. was always the center

  315. and the substance

  316. of his teaching.

  317. Those things

  318. change everything.

  319. Verse 3,

  320. it determined

  321. his attitude.

  322. Paul was constantly

  323. aware of his physical,

  324. emotional,

  325. and intellectual

  326. inability

  327. to make anybody

  328. believe

  329. or get saved.

  330. On the contrary,

  331. verse 4 and 5,

  332. Paul was confident

  333. that when he speaks

  334. the gospel

  335. of Jesus crucified

  336. and sees a person

  337. changed from the inside out,

  338. then the only plausible

  339. possibility

  340. is it was God's power

  341. at work

  342. in that person's life,

  343. not Paul's cleverness.

  344. Understanding

  345. the power

  346. and wisdom

  347. of God

  348. changes the whole

  349. basis

  350. on which Paul

  351. lives and operates.

  352. And second point

  353. then is that

  354. Paul contrasts

  355. wisdom and power

  356. in the spirit

  357. of the world

  358. and the spirit

  359. of God,

  360. verses 6 through 16.

  361. Now,

  362. these verses

  363. can appear

  364. a bit complicated,

  365. but I think

  366. it's quite simple

  367. if we know

  368. a little bit

  369. of cultural

  370. context

  371. that Paul's

  372. writing into.

  373. So,

  374. it runs like this.

  375. Greek culture,

  376. Greek religion

  377. particularly,

  378. and Greek philosophy

  379. are all permeated

  380. with the idea

  381. of a secret

  382. higher wisdom

  383. and knowledge.

  384. So,

  385. in any one

  386. of the plethora

  387. of religions

  388. that was available

  389. in Corinth,

  390. the standard procedure

  391. would be that you

  392. would have an entry

  393. point set of beliefs,

  394. but then to show

  395. maturity and growth

  396. in that religion

  397. or philosophy

  398. or culture,

  399. then you would have

  400. to move on

  401. and discover

  402. these secret

  403. levels of things,

  404. secret wisdom,

  405. secret power.

  406. and that

  407. was the mark

  408. of maturity.

  409. And many

  410. believers at Corinth

  411. had made the same

  412. assumption

  413. about the Christian

  414. life

  415. and concluded

  416. that to mature

  417. or grow as Christians,

  418. they needed to move

  419. on from the beginning

  420. focus on Christ

  421. and Him crucified

  422. and discover

  423. better,

  424. more exciting,

  425. hidden,

  426. secret,

  427. mysterious

  428. expressions

  429. of wisdom

  430. and power.

  431. Paul's response

  432. in summary,

  433. verse 16,

  434. you have the mind

  435. of Christ,

  436. which is really

  437. a summary

  438. of chapter 1

  439. verses 1 to 9

  440. 10 again.

  441. There is no more

  442. to be discovered.

  443. You already have

  444. the mind of Christ.

  445. What more

  446. wisdom and power

  447. can be found?

  448. There is no higher

  449. wisdom,

  450. knowledge,

  451. or power

  452. to discover

  453. or attain.

  454. Verses 6 through 9,

  455. each believer

  456. has already experienced

  457. both the sacred

  458. wisdom of God

  459. and God's secret

  460. power source

  461. in His Holy Spirit.

  462. In the end,

  463. says Paul,

  464. that's the only

  465. explanation

  466. why you believe

  467. and others

  468. still disbelieve.

  469. Others think

  470. the gospel

  471. is moronic.

  472. And says Paul,

  473. verse 10 through

  474. to 16,

  475. it's God's

  476. powerful spirit

  477. working in them

  478. daily,

  479. which enables

  480. them to evaluate

  481. themselves,

  482. to evaluate others,

  483. to form judgments

  484. about what's right

  485. and wrong

  486. and defend those

  487. conclusions before others

  488. and which empowers

  489. them to impart

  490. gospel truth

  491. to others.

  492. You have the mind

  493. of Christ,

  494. says Paul.

  495. So here's the rub

  496. for these Christians

  497. and Corinth.

  498. The daily struggle

  499. is not to discover

  500. some new wisdom,

  501. new source of power,

  502. new aspect

  503. of those things.

  504. the struggle

  505. is to live

  506. increasingly

  507. in the light

  508. of what you

  509. already have,

  510. the mind

  511. of Christ.

  512. The struggle

  513. is to increasingly

  514. express the mind

  515. of Christ

  516. in every relationship,

  517. in every interaction,

  518. in every aspect

  519. of church family life.

  520. And make no mistake,

  521. unless you're

  522. different from me,

  523. I find it

  524. a seriously

  525. hard struggle

  526. to keep

  527. the mind

  528. of Christ,

  529. to be convinced

  530. that the mind

  531. of Christ

  532. is all I need.

  533. Unless you're

  534. very different

  535. from me,

  536. then we so

  537. easily find

  538. ourselves chasing

  539. after the new

  540. next best thing,

  541. new things

  542. to explore.

  543. We get to feel

  544. that ordinary life,

  545. daily life,

  546. is humdrum.

  547. And we certainly

  548. look for new

  549. exciting things,

  550. new spectacular

  551. things.

  552. And we see it

  553. right across

  554. the Christian church.

  555. We tire

  556. of what we have

  557. and we chase

  558. new exciting things

  559. concluding they're

  560. better.

  561. or more

  562. personally,

  563. we're asking

  564. the question,

  565. yes,

  566. I know I'm

  567. a Christian,

  568. yes,

  569. I'm so thankful

  570. that Christ

  571. died for me,

  572. I've been

  573. made new,

  574. but

  575. what new

  576. thing can I

  577. discover to

  578. make me feel

  579. better about

  580. myself?

  581. What is there

  582. I can tap

  583. into that will

  584. make me feel

  585. more whole

  586. as a person,

  587. that will make

  588. me more

  589. attractive to

  590. others around

  591. me,

  592. to make me

  593. more useful

  594. in this church

  595. family?

  596. Those sorts

  597. of thoughts

  598. tell us that

  599. to have the

  600. mind of Christ

  601. as we're

  602. thinking about it,

  603. to have the

  604. mind of Christ

  605. isn't everything,

  606. or it doesn't

  607. seem exciting

  608. or spectacular

  609. enough.

  610. we think

  611. there's

  612. something

  613. just beyond

  614. us,

  615. if only we

  616. can get it

  617. then everything

  618. else will be

  619. right.

  620. Paul pushes

  621. the Corinthian

  622. believers to

  623. say that the

  624. truly useful

  625. disciple is

  626. one who

  627. displays God's

  628. wisdom and

  629. power.

  630. Jesus

  631. shaped,

  632. Jesus

  633. focused,

  634. and that's

  635. in sharp

  636. contrast to

  637. what the

  638. world offers

  639. or considers

  640. wise and

  641. powerful.

  642. Let's just

  643. circle around

  644. then back to

  645. my opening

  646. challenges about

  647. division,

  648. dysfunctional

  649. relationships,

  650. and having the

  651. ability to be

  652. wise, useful

  653. disciples of

  654. Jesus in this

  655. church family.

  656. They're the

  657. takeaway points

  658. for today.

  659. So the first

  660. one is this,

  661. on repeat,

  662. from the past

  663. two weeks.

  664. The gospel

  665. really is a

  666. radical new

  667. worldview, a

  668. new way of

  669. seeing the

  670. world, a

  671. new way of

  672. operating in

  673. the world.

  674. And it's

  675. totally at

  676. odds with

  677. our old

  678. pre-Christian

  679. framework of

  680. thinking about

  681. who and what

  682. is important

  683. in Christ's

  684. church.

  685. And that

  686. new worldview,

  687. that new way

  688. of thinking,

  689. ought to

  690. overflow into

  691. Jesus-shaped

  692. ways of

  693. relating,

  694. engaging in

  695. this church

  696. family.

  697. Now,

  698. Paul repeats

  699. it and repeats

  700. it because

  701. he finds it so

  702. hard to learn

  703. that lesson.

  704. we constantly

  705. think we can

  706. blend what

  707. the world

  708. tells us

  709. and what

  710. the gospel

  711. tells us.

  712. And we

  713. wonder why

  714. we end up

  715. in a total

  716. mess in our

  717. minds.

  718. We're trying

  719. to mix

  720. things that

  721. don't mix.

  722. Trying to

  723. have food in

  724. both camps,

  725. as the old

  726. saying goes.

  727. second thing

  728. is this.

  729. We need to

  730. call out

  731. most division

  732. and factions

  733. in a church

  734. family as

  735. inherently

  736. being about

  737. power struggles.

  738. Now,

  739. that might

  740. sound pretty

  741. negative,

  742. and it is

  743. pretty negative,

  744. but let me

  745. try and defend

  746. it.

  747. If I can't

  748. defend it,

  749. just write me

  750. off as Eeyore,

  751. as you would

  752. normally do.

  753. We recognize

  754. the process,

  755. don't we?

  756. An individual

  757. latches on to

  758. some issue

  759. from the

  760. Bible,

  761. which they

  762. believe is a

  763. really crucial,

  764. fundamental

  765. expression of

  766. what it is to

  767. be a believer,

  768. or what it is

  769. to be a

  770. mature believer.

  771. Then it

  772. easily becomes

  773. a lobby group

  774. where that

  775. person

  776. convinces

  777. others

  778. that

  779. maturity

  780. in Christ

  781. is to

  782. share their

  783. view on

  784. this particular

  785. issue.

  786. Then that

  787. easily becomes

  788. behind the

  789. scenes,

  790. or even

  791. in frontal

  792. assault,

  793. they start

  794. to take

  795. down anybody

  796. else in the

  797. congregation

  798. who don't

  799. share their

  800. views,

  801. or who push

  802. back against

  803. that particular

  804. view.

  805. And finally,

  806. a particular

  807. person who

  808. started it all

  809. makes themselves

  810. and their

  811. view dominant

  812. and preeminent

  813. in the church

  814. family.

  815. Now,

  816. some of you

  817. might think

  818. that's negative,

  819. but I can tell

  820. you now that

  821. people who've

  822. been around

  823. churches for

  824. long enough

  825. will recognize

  826. that only too

  827. well.

  828. people who

  829. have a

  830. view of

  831. the church

  832. and sometimes

  833. those trip

  834. points will

  835. be,

  836. or oftentimes

  837. will be

  838. presented as

  839. a wide

  840. variety of

  841. theological

  842. issues.

  843. But again,

  844. while there may

  845. well be genuine

  846. theological

  847. differences,

  848. behind those

  849. sorts of

  850. things can

  851. just be raw

  852. power struggles.

  853. And the

  854. point I want

  855. to make

  856. here is that

  857. that process

  858. is common

  859. and oftentimes

  860. even convincing

  861. in churches.

  862. But it's not

  863. God's wisdom

  864. or power

  865. if it's driving

  866. a person's

  867. dominance,

  868. if it's not

  869. Jesus-shaped

  870. and gospel-focused,

  871. but person-shaped

  872. and focused

  873. through clever

  874. manipulation.

  875. Brothers and

  876. sisters,

  877. two weeks out

  878. from my

  879. formal ministry

  880. here,

  881. I beg you,

  882. don't fall

  883. into that

  884. trap.

  885. It has

  886. destroyed too

  887. many church

  888. families

  889. throughout

  890. history.

  891. And especially

  892. when you see

  893. things in this

  894. church family

  895. that you wish

  896. were different

  897. and even

  898. perhaps need

  899. to be

  900. different.

  901. By all

  902. means,

  903. speak up.

  904. By all

  905. means,

  906. challenge.

  907. But make

  908. sure that

  909. when you

  910. speak up,

  911. when you

  912. challenge,

  913. you do

  914. so in

  915. the context

  916. of God's

  917. wisdom and

  918. power.

  919. Jesus-shaped

  920. and gospel-focused.

  921. Not self-promotion.

  922. That's a hard

  923. one to do

  924. because inevitably

  925. passions and

  926. emotions get

  927. involved in

  928. those things.

  929. things.

  930. I think,

  931. just wearing that

  932. application myself,

  933. I think Christian

  934. leaders are often

  935. guilty of

  936. exerting this

  937. sort of worldly

  938. power.

  939. It's easy for a

  940. leader like myself

  941. to use

  942. personality or

  943. perhaps a formal

  944. position in the

  945. church.

  946. church.

  947. I'm the

  948. pastor.

  949. And I can use

  950. that or could

  951. use that.

  952. To bulldoze

  953. folk in the

  954. church.

  955. To bulldoze

  956. them into

  957. conformity.

  958. Or again,

  959. it's a real

  960. temptation for

  961. church leaders

  962. like myself to

  963. use a position

  964. to hide behind,

  965. to avoid what

  966. is a right and

  967. proper accountability

  968. to the church

  969. family.

  970. Don't you

  971. challenge me.

  972. I'm the

  973. pastor.

  974. What would you

  975. know?

  976. And again,

  977. I've seen it

  978. all.

  979. And it's

  980. always ugly

  981. and destructive

  982. to God's

  983. people.

  984. Leaders need

  985. to challenge

  986. people and

  987. motivate people,

  988. motivate change

  989. rather, using

  990. the power of

  991. true doctrine,

  992. accurate teaching,

  993. prayer.

  994. In other words,

  995. God's wisdom,

  996. God's power.

  997. The final thing

  998. then is we

  999. need to act

  1000. confidently to

  1001. repair dysfunctional

  1002. relationships,

  1003. knowing we have

  1004. the wisdom and

  1005. power necessary.

  1006. See, the

  1007. gospel tells us

  1008. in Ephesians,

  1009. we're told in

  1010. Ephesians, that

  1011. the gospel was

  1012. about creating

  1013. one new

  1014. humanity in

  1015. Christ.

  1016. It's about

  1017. unity.

  1018. All the

  1019. dividing categories

  1020. in our world

  1021. are dismantled

  1022. in the gospel.

  1023. If that's the

  1024. case then,

  1025. division and

  1026. strife,

  1027. which are just

  1028. new dividing

  1029. categories,

  1030. must be the

  1031. very opposite

  1032. of what God

  1033. wants for his

  1034. people, and

  1035. the opposite of

  1036. spirit-controlled

  1037. Christians, what

  1038. they ought to be

  1039. like.

  1040. therefore, my

  1041. friends, I

  1042. say this to

  1043. you, to

  1044. live with

  1045. dysfunctional

  1046. relationships

  1047. within this

  1048. church family

  1049. is to live

  1050. in denial

  1051. of God's

  1052. powerful,

  1053. renewing spirit

  1054. within us.

  1055. God's

  1056. not serious.

  1057. Now, how

  1058. could we

  1059. possibly settle

  1060. for that

  1061. when God

  1062. has enriched

  1063. us with both

  1064. wisdom and

  1065. power in the

  1066. gospel of

  1067. reconciliation,

  1068. equipping us

  1069. therefore to be

  1070. reconcilers with

  1071. one another?

  1072. how could we

  1073. possibly settle

  1074. for that when

  1075. we can, each

  1076. of us, both

  1077. sides of the

  1078. dispute, can

  1079. bring to the

  1080. table the

  1081. mind of

  1082. Christ?

  1083. Because that's

  1084. what we have to

  1085. bring to the

  1086. table.

  1087. We have the

  1088. mind of

  1089. Christ.

  1090. An

  1091. extraordinary

  1092. equipping,

  1093. is it not?

  1094. Very simple

  1095. final question,

  1096. but it's a

  1097. profound final

  1098. question.

  1099. Will we

  1100. function in

  1101. the reality

  1102. of the

  1103. mind of

  1104. Christ?

  1105. Will this

  1106. congregation

  1107. as a whole,

  1108. this church

  1109. family as a

  1110. whole, will

  1111. you individually

  1112. and as the

  1113. whole congregation,

  1114. will you

  1115. determine to

  1116. be known as

  1117. a group and

  1118. as an

  1119. individual who

  1120. operates with

  1121. the mind of

  1122. Christ?

  1123. I'll tell you,

  1124. it'll be

  1125. powerful stuff

  1126. as you guys

  1127. step into the

  1128. next chapter of

  1129. this church

  1130. family life,

  1131. and I step

  1132. out.

  1133. Powerful stuff

  1134. indeed.

  1135. Pray with me.

  1136. Lord, it's

  1137. such an

  1138. indictment on

  1139. us that

  1140. for us

  1141. who are

  1142. new in

  1143. you in

  1144. the Lord

  1145. Jesus Christ,

  1146. who have

  1147. the mind

  1148. of Christ,

  1149. so often

  1150. continue to

  1151. act with

  1152. a mind of

  1153. selfishness

  1154. and self

  1155. promotion.

  1156. Help us

  1157. to see the

  1158. awfulness of

  1159. it, Lord.

  1160. Help us to

  1161. see that in

  1162. Christ it

  1163. doesn't have

  1164. to be that

  1165. way.

  1166. And help

  1167. us, Lord,

  1168. to take

  1169. action,

  1170. to repair

  1171. relationships

  1172. that are

  1173. strained and

  1174. broken,

  1175. perhaps some

  1176. for years,

  1177. to be

  1178. confident in

  1179. stepping forward

  1180. and thrown

  1181. our involvement

  1182. and commitment

  1183. into this

  1184. church

  1185. practically,

  1186. knowing that

  1187. we have the

  1188. wisdom and

  1189. power of

  1190. God to

  1191. make us the

  1192. most useful,

  1193. wise,

  1194. powerful

  1195. disciples possible

  1196. in this

  1197. place.

  1198. Help us to

  1199. see that,

  1200. help us to

  1201. long for it,

  1202. and help us to

  1203. delight in it.

  1204. In Jesus' name

  1205. I pray.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.

  1208. Amen.

  1209. Amen.

  1210. Amen.

  1211. Amen.

  1212. Amen.

  1213. Amen.
