  1. Well, everyone's heard the saying, no doubt, if you don't aim at anything, you'll hit it every time.

  2. It's important to have goals.

  3. We have goals in career, we set ourselves goals in sporting achievements, in relationships, personal development.

  4. We need goals.

  5. Because without goals, we just wander.

  6. And there's no way of measuring growth or progress.

  7. Well, it's exactly the same when it comes to being Christians.

  8. And so I asked this morning, what is your goal as a believer or a member of this church?

  9. Now, hopefully, you're not just wandering.

  10. Hopefully, you do have a goal.

  11. And hopefully, you'd say to me, your goal is to be a faithful, mature servant of Jesus.

  12. Or in the terms of this sermon series, hopefully, you want to say, I want to be plugged in and switched on to Jesus.

  13. Now, jumping into the church at Corinth, it seems that there's no doubt at all that the believers there were keen to be spiritually mature.

  14. The problem is they had wrong ideas of what spiritual maturity would look like on the ground.

  15. They understood that they were spiritually new.

  16. In other words, they had been converted.

  17. They were plugged into Jesus.

  18. But they confused that with being spiritually mature.

  19. It seems like they thought, well, since I'm a believer, therefore, whatever I think and do as a believer is evidence of being mature in Christ.

  20. And to that, Paul says, no, not so.

  21. Paul's saying to them right through these first three chapters, to be spiritually mature is not just to be plugged into Jesus when you're converted,

  22. but to be like Jesus in all your thinking and all your actions or to pick up the link from chapter 2 that we looked at last week to chapter 2, verse 16.

  23. It's to have the mind of Christ and be able to apply the mind of Christ into every circumstance of life.

  24. In his letter to these believers at Corinth, Paul's been contrasting the spirit of the world and the spirit of God.

  25. And he's been helping these believers see that they've been more influenced and driven.

  26. They were still more influenced and driven by the spirit of the world.

  27. That is, the spirit of the Corinthian culture that they had lived in for so many years and continued to live in even as believers.

  28. That they were more influenced by that than they were by the spirit of God, the wisdom of God, the mind of Christ.

  29. And that takes us to Paul's confronting conclusion, which is where, in a sense, I want to leave my formal ministry among you with.

  30. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  31. These believers at Corinth thought they were spiritually mature, but Paul calls them out as being spiritually immature and worldly.

  32. Now, surely, friends, if anything would make you sit up and listen and engage this morning,

  33. then the frightening possibility of thinking that you're mature in Jesus, spiritually mature in Jesus,

  34. while being spiritually immature, should actually be that motivation.

  35. And Paul gives them some really helpful pointers towards being spiritually mature,

  36. which will also make them the most useful disciples they can be in that church in Corinth.

  37. And, of course, the lessons are for us, too.

  38. The first one is, Paul says to these believers,

  39. don't be happily immature with a correct but limited understanding of the gospel.

  40. And when you look at these verses that Linda's just read to us,

  41. there's no way you can sugarcoat Paul's challenge.

  42. It's really a very, very abrasive, abrupt challenge.

  43. Essentially, he's saying, for goodness sake, grow up.

  44. Your thinking and your actions are more like unbelievers than believers.

  45. Grow up.

  46. The evidence that would bring Paul to say that?

  47. Well, chapter 1, 2, and 3.

  48. Disunity.

  49. Jealousy.

  50. We've looked at it over the last few weeks.

  51. Competitive individualism.

  52. Factions.

  53. Obsession with personalities.

  54. Striving for dominance and preeminence.

  55. Even if it meant going to war with each other.

  56. So, for Paul, growing up is simply to become skilled in the mind of Christ.

  57. To express the mind of Christ.

  58. In all things.

  59. Not only understanding God's grace in their own personal salvation,

  60. but also in its wider implications of how they should live in this new community called the church.

  61. A community of saved people.

  62. A community of Christ's people.

  63. So, Paul's really saying to them, as he summarizes these first three chapters, as he writes to them,

  64. that their aim, their aim should have been to be known for speaking the truth in love.

  65. Loving generously those hardest to love.

  66. Carrying the cost of being wronged and forgiving those who wrong you.

  67. Being other person-centered and ministry-minded.

  68. Being concerned for God's glory.

  69. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  70. Not your own.

  71. Not your own position.

  72. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  73. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  74. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  75. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  76. Being concerned for God's reputation.

  77. And as I've said over the last three weeks,

  78. those things can't exist.

  79. Cannot coexist with self-promotion.

  80. Competitive individualism.

  81. And personality factions.

  82. And so, I think we can say, these believers were happily immature.

  83. That's a pretty strong statement, but these believers were happily immature because they were happy with a correct but limited understanding of the gospel and God's word.

  84. Yes, I'm wonderfully excited that I'm saved.

  85. But they haven't thought about the implications of that in a community.

  86. They were happy to enjoy all the blessings and security of being saved.

  87. Equally happy to live with a dreadful contradiction of continuing to be self-centered.

  88. To be self-promoting.

  89. Dismissive of their brothers and sisters in Christ.

  90. And Paul said, grow up.

  91. You can't do these two things together.

  92. And the application, I think, is fairly obvious.

  93. If you are happy

  94. knowing that you've been saved

  95. by Christ through grace

  96. but continue to think and act towards others using the world's attitudes,

  97. then

  98. you're actually making a commitment

  99. to be happily immature.

  100. and therefore a commitment

  101. to not being useful

  102. in this church.

  103. Over my ministry years,

  104. it's been a real source of sadness

  105. to observe some people

  106. who seem to be the same today

  107. as what they were 20 years ago.

  108. How does that happen?

  109. Unless people are happily immature.

  110. Second thing then is

  111. be a team player.

  112. Happy with the position God plays you

  113. verses 5 through to 9.

  114. The problem for the Corinthian believers

  115. was that they had put people on a pedestal.

  116. And that pedestal

  117. was God's pedestal

  118. and God should have been on the pedestal.

  119. Not people.

  120. Not personalities.

  121. And Paul uses a farming metaphor

  122. to make his point clear.

  123. And the metaphor is,

  124. as Dave's already referred to,

  125. it's crop production.

  126. And of course we know

  127. that they grow a crop.

  128. There's different inputs,

  129. different human inputs

  130. at different points.

  131. Each input is critical

  132. in its own stage.

  133. But none of it amounts to anything

  134. unless the Lord

  135. causes the growth to harvest time.

  136. And Paul's point is very simple.

  137. In the same way,

  138. God puts individuals

  139. in a church family

  140. to do a job

  141. that he has gifted them to do

  142. at that particular time,

  143. that particular season.

  144. Each individual will contribute

  145. in different ways,

  146. in critical ways.

  147. But all of it

  148. is God's process

  149. of growing his new community

  150. to maturity.

  151. And ultimately,

  152. the end of the process

  153. is that God is glorified

  154. as he deserves to be.

  155. Now,

  156. again,

  157. practically,

  158. Paul is not saying here

  159. that we should never

  160. and that he would never

  161. have a deep sense

  162. of indebtedness

  163. and fondness

  164. for a particular individual

  165. that's been formative

  166. in our Christian walk.

  167. That's not what Paul's saying here.

  168. Or a Christian leader

  169. who have been

  170. particularly helpful

  171. in our lives.

  172. What he is saying is

  173. that we need

  174. to be team players.

  175. Team players

  176. never think

  177. the team

  178. is carried

  179. by one person.

  180. No matter

  181. how helpful

  182. that person

  183. has been,

  184. he's only one person

  185. in a team.

  186. team players

  187. never sort of

  188. parade their own

  189. gifts or abilities.

  190. Whether that person

  191. is themselves

  192. a leader

  193. or just

  194. an ordinary

  195. person

  196. in the church.

  197. Team players

  198. value

  199. every contribution

  200. and know

  201. that each

  202. is essential

  203. for the team

  204. to be successful.

  205. And so my friends

  206. I say to you this morning

  207. you will be

  208. most useful

  209. in this church

  210. whether it's up front

  211. in some sort of

  212. formal role

  213. or behind the scenes

  214. not heard of

  215. during the week.

  216. You'll be most useful

  217. if your aim

  218. is consistently

  219. and happily

  220. to contribute

  221. to the growth

  222. and maturing

  223. of this family

  224. as God gives you

  225. opportunity

  226. to do so.

  227. The future

  228. needs

  229. team players.

  230. Now

  231. speaking very

  232. personally

  233. for a moment

  234. individuals

  235. take me

  236. at this particular

  237. moment in time

  238. individuals

  239. will come

  240. and go.

  241. And when the

  242. Lord brings

  243. an individual

  244. perhaps me

  245. into your life

  246. it's for

  247. your benefit

  248. for your

  249. spiritual

  250. maturing.

  251. And equally

  252. true

  253. when the

  254. Lord takes

  255. an individual

  256. perhaps me

  257. out of your

  258. life

  259. then it's

  260. because that

  261. individual

  262. perhaps me

  263. has served

  264. their purpose.

  265. And the

  266. Lord's got a

  267. new stage

  268. of growth

  269. for you

  270. to enter

  271. into

  272. under his

  273. hand

  274. and under

  275. his grace

  276. and perhaps

  277. with a new

  278. personality

  279. or a new

  280. group of

  281. personalities.

  282. And here's

  283. the point

  284. and this is

  285. so crucial

  286. in times of

  287. change.

  288. The team

  289. will always

  290. be changing.

  291. changing.

  292. We might

  293. wish it

  294. to be

  295. static

  296. but we

  297. can't

  298. get it

  299. like that.

  300. The team

  301. will always

  302. be changing

  303. but the

  304. Lord

  305. will always

  306. be the

  307. coach

  308. for

  309. preparing

  310. the team

  311. of the

  312. moment

  313. for heaven

  314. through

  315. maturity.

  316. Churches

  317. don't get

  318. that and

  319. that's why

  320. transitions like

  321. this are so

  322. notoriously

  323. bad.

  324. Third thing

  325. is be a

  326. team leader

  327. a team

  328. builder

  329. rather

  330. using

  331. you be a

  332. team leader

  333. self-promotion

  334. Freudian slip

  335. there.

  336. Be a team

  337. builder

  338. using the

  339. best mind

  340. of Christ

  341. building

  342. materials.

  343. Picking up

  344. the thoughts

  345. of 10 to

  346. 17

  347. and you

  348. know I'm

  349. just going

  350. to skate

  351. over the

  352. top of

  353. this.

  354. I'm not

  355. going to

  356. dig into

  357. all the

  358. details

  359. that could

  360. be

  361. lifted

  362. out here.

  363. Paul

  364. essentially

  365. changes

  366. the

  367. metaphor

  368. to

  369. a

  370. building

  371. site

  372. and

  373. he's

  374. really

  375. saying

  376. look

  377. the

  378. church

  379. at

  380. Corinth

  381. you

  382. guys

  383. are

  384. God's

  385. special

  386. building

  387. project.

  388. Paul

  389. his

  390. fellow

  391. workers

  392. and all

  393. the

  394. believers

  395. in Corinth

  396. says

  397. Paul

  398. well

  399. you're

  400. the

  401. subcontractors

  402. you're

  403. engaged

  404. to

  405. actually

  406. do

  407. the

  408. work

  409. on

  410. the

  411. ground.

  412. God

  413. is the

  414. owner

  415. builder

  416. or

  417. project

  418. manager

  419. constantly

  420. monitoring

  421. the quality

  422. of the

  423. build.

  424. In

  425. verses

  426. 10 and

  427. 11

  428. Paul

  429. says

  430. well look

  431. I

  432. started

  433. I put

  434. down

  435. the

  436. foundations

  437. as a

  438. skilled

  439. master

  440. builder.

  441. He calls

  442. himself a

  443. skilled

  444. master

  445. builder

  446. I think

  447. because

  448. he's

  449. saying

  450. I

  451. used

  452. the

  453. right

  454. tools

  455. for

  456. a

  457. solid

  458. foundation.

  459. It

  460. really

  461. told us

  462. what those

  463. tools are

  464. in chapter

  465. 2.

  466. The

  467. message

  468. of

  469. Jesus

  470. crucified

  471. who is

  472. God's

  473. righteousness

  474. wisdom

  475. power

  476. redemption

  477. sanctification

  478. he's the

  479. one who

  480. can renew

  481. people from

  482. the inside

  483. out.

  484. So

  485. Paul

  486. uses

  487. the gospel

  488. message

  489. in

  490. conjunction

  491. with

  492. carefully

  493. applied

  494. practical

  495. gospel

  496. wisdom

  497. and power.

  498. In

  499. other

  500. words

  501. the

  502. gospel

  503. message

  504. in

  505. conjunction

  506. with the

  507. mind

  508. of

  509. Christ.

  510. That's

  511. what makes

  512. Paul

  513. a skilled

  514. master

  515. builder.

  516. And

  517. that's

  518. why the

  519. foundation

  520. is so

  521. solid.

  522. Verse

  523. 12

  524. through

  525. 15

  526. Paul

  527. says

  528. well

  529. that's

  530. only

  531. stage

  532. one

  533. of

  534. God's

  535. build.

  536. Others

  537. will

  538. follow

  539. and

  540. build

  541. upon

  542. what

  543. I've

  544. done.

  545. Doing

  546. the

  547. framing

  548. the

  549. roofing

  550. the

  551. external

  552. cladding

  553. internal

  554. fit out

  555. all of

  556. that

  557. needs

  558. to be

  559. done

  560. and

  561. will

  562. be

  563. done

  564. as

  565. part

  566. of

  567. God's

  568. build

  569. in

  570. Corinth.

  571. And

  572. says

  573. Paul

  574. you

  575. also

  576. are

  577. called

  578. to be

  579. skilled

  580. master

  581. builders.

  582. And

  583. then he

  584. sets up

  585. a bit

  586. of a

  587. contrast.

  588. Well

  589. there's

  590. an option

  591. there's

  592. a choice

  593. here.

  594. You

  595. can be

  596. skilled

  597. master

  598. builders

  599. using

  600. top

  601. shelf

  602. building

  603. materials.

  604. Or

  605. which is

  606. gold

  607. and silver

  608. and precious

  609. stones

  610. in there.

  611. That's

  612. the

  613. metaphor.

  614. Or

  615. you

  616. can be

  617. a

  618. shunky

  619. builder

  620. using

  621. stuff

  622. that's

  623. sort of

  624. cheap

  625. and nasty

  626. but looks

  627. alright

  628. when you

  629. first use

  630. it.

  631. It

  632. just

  633. doesn't

  634. stand

  635. the test

  636. of

  637. time.

  638. Wood

  639. and hay

  640. and stones.

  641. That's the

  642. picture in

  643. there.

  644. I think.

  645. Things that

  646. look good

  647. now but

  648. will cause

  649. the build

  650. to fail

  651. in the

  652. long term.

  653. And again

  654. Paul's

  655. point is

  656. simple but

  657. again very

  658. confronting.

  659. Either your

  660. ministry

  661. contribution

  662. to this

  663. church

  664. will be

  665. worthwhile

  666. and lasting

  667. or

  668. and this

  669. is very

  670. confronting

  671. or

  672. it is

  673. building

  674. weakness

  675. and failure

  676. into the

  677. church

  678. family

  679. even

  680. though

  681. it might

  682. look good

  683. now in

  684. the short

  685. term.

  686. There's a

  687. huge challenge

  688. in that

  689. I think.

  690. And all

  691. of this

  692. is put in

  693. the context

  694. of knowing

  695. that the

  696. Lord

  697. who's the

  698. owner builder

  699. and building

  700. inspector

  701. says Paul

  702. well the

  703. Lord himself

  704. will expose

  705. the master

  706. builders

  707. and the

  708. shonky

  709. builders.

  710. And that's

  711. not a threat.

  712. I think that

  713. Paul uses that

  714. an encouragement

  715. to use

  716. quality materials

  717. that the

  718. Lord himself

  719. as the

  720. project manager

  721. and the

  722. chief builder

  723. and the

  724. owner builder

  725. use the

  726. materials the

  727. Lord has

  728. actually provided

  729. to ensure

  730. that the

  731. build is

  732. good

  733. and materials

  734. that will

  735. bring God's

  736. approval for

  737. a job well

  738. done.

  739. And for

  740. Paul

  741. his ultimate

  742. concern was

  743. not to win

  744. the approval

  745. of people

  746. in Corinth

  747. or to impress

  748. people in

  749. Corinth

  750. but to win

  751. the approval

  752. of the

  753. owner builder

  754. himself.

  755. Now

  756. just one

  757. little thing

  758. to note

  759. carefully in

  760. passing.

  761. These verses

  762. are not

  763. suggesting for

  764. a moment

  765. that a

  766. believer might

  767. lose their

  768. salvation

  769. if their

  770. ministry is

  771. not gospel

  772. shaped as it

  773. should be.

  774. That's taken a

  775. metaphor and

  776. making it

  777. absolute.

  778. It's taken a

  779. metaphor way

  780. way too far.

  781. What he is

  782. saying here

  783. I think is

  784. that we

  785. should be

  786. focused on

  787. maximizing our

  788. usefulness in

  789. this church

  790. family.

  791. In this church

  792. family build

  793. by making

  794. sure we

  795. use top

  796. gospel

  797. materials in

  798. our ministry

  799. contribution.

  800. One of the

  801. reasons I get

  802. a tradesman to

  803. do my work

  804. at home is

  805. because I've

  806. learned the

  807. pain of trying

  808. to do it

  809. myself.

  810. Only to have

  811. to redo it

  812. six months

  813. later.

  814. Because this

  815. particular builder

  816. when it comes to

  817. those projects

  818. is your

  819. ultimate

  820. chunky builder.

  821. It's expensive

  822. and it's a

  823. pain.

  824. Brothers and

  825. sisters let's

  826. build with the

  827. right materials

  828. top shelf

  829. materials and

  830. then build

  831. once knowing

  832. that it's going

  833. to stand the

  834. test of time.

  835. verses 16

  836. and 17

  837. Paul's

  838. encouragement

  839. then is if

  840. only you could

  841. see your

  842. church family

  843. there in

  844. Corinth.

  845. If only you

  846. can see your

  847. church family

  848. here as to

  849. use the terms

  850. of modern TV

  851. shows as

  852. God's dream

  853. build.

  854. Paul says if

  855. only you can get

  856. that into your

  857. mind then you

  858. will no longer

  859. be concerned

  860. about yourselves

  861. or your own

  862. reputation or

  863. your own

  864. preeminence.

  865. You'll be

  866. concerned to

  867. build carefully

  868. for God's

  869. approval.

  870. So what are

  871. quality building

  872. materials which

  873. will make you a

  874. skilled master

  875. builder in this

  876. church family?

  877. Well same as

  878. what Paul had.

  879. The gospel

  880. message of

  881. Jesus crucified.

  882. God's

  883. righteousness,

  884. wisdom,

  885. power to

  886. renew people from

  887. the inside out

  888. and carefully

  889. applied practically

  890. with the mind

  891. of Christ.

  892. It's not

  893. rocket science.

  894. It's building

  895. on the unity

  896. we already

  897. share because

  898. we are defined

  899. and blessed

  900. equally in

  901. Jesus.

  902. It's producing

  903. discipleship

  904. that's marked

  905. by allegiance

  906. to Jesus

  907. not a

  908. personality.

  909. It's valuing

  910. the whole

  911. team with

  912. all the

  913. different

  914. and varied

  915. contributions

  916. rather than

  917. competitive

  918. individualism.

  919. I'm more

  920. important than

  921. you.

  922. I know

  923. more than

  924. you.

  925. I've been

  926. here longer

  927. than you.

  928. It's building

  929. self-sacrificial

  930. commitment to

  931. this church

  932. family.

  933. That's

  934. increasingly a

  935. rare commodity

  936. in our

  937. selfish world,

  938. isn't it?

  939. Self-sacrificing

  940. commitment to

  941. this church

  942. family.

  943. That is

  944. intentionally

  945. choosing to

  946. use your

  947. time, to

  948. use your

  949. energy to

  950. volunteer and

  951. get involved in

  952. the jobs which

  953. need doing to

  954. make this church

  955. operate on a

  956. week-to-week

  957. basis.

  958. I have to

  959. say, it's

  960. getting harder

  961. and harder to

  962. do that in a

  963. congregation that's

  964. getting bigger and

  965. bigger.

  966. How does that

  967. work?

  968. It's being

  969. intentional and

  970. generous with

  971. your money, if

  972. I might say

  973. this.

  974. Choosing to

  975. use your money

  976. sacrificially to

  977. make sure that

  978. this church

  979. family has the

  980. money to pay

  981. the staff that

  982. are required to

  983. do the work

  984. that's existing

  985. and then to

  986. grow and

  987. expand into

  988. new ministry

  989. that hasn't

  990. even been

  991. thought of yet.

  992. The mind of

  993. Christ is

  994. saying that

  995. money is to

  996. be used for

  997. kingdom purposes.

  998. So the

  999. question is very

  1000. simple.

  1001. Are you

  1002. giving

  1003. sacrificially?

  1004. Is that a

  1005. goal or a

  1006. sub-goal?

  1007. Because if you

  1008. don't have a

  1009. goal and if

  1010. you're not

  1011. intentional, then

  1012. I can guarantee

  1013. you'll be

  1014. controlled and

  1015. driven by our

  1016. culture.

  1017. What does our

  1018. culture say to

  1019. us?

  1020. You're the most

  1021. important person.

  1022. Giving your

  1023. money away is

  1024. stupid.

  1025. gather,

  1026. hoard,

  1027. accumulate all

  1028. the things you

  1029. desire because

  1030. you're worth it.

  1031. Or,

  1032. accumulate all

  1033. those things

  1034. because in the

  1035. end, you know,

  1036. your identity and

  1037. your security is

  1038. in the amount of

  1039. things you have

  1040. around you.

  1041. Well,

  1042. you hear the

  1043. contrast again.

  1044. You're worth it.

  1045. Paul would say,

  1046. is Jesus worth it?

  1047. We're going to sing

  1048. a song along

  1049. asking that very

  1050. question.

  1051. Is he worth it?

  1052. Surely, my

  1053. friends, the

  1054. mind of Christ

  1055. would say, I

  1056. will sacrifice my

  1057. own comfort, my

  1058. own rights, for

  1059. the sake of God's

  1060. kingdom.

  1061. fourth point, and

  1062. very briefly then,

  1063. don't compete for

  1064. blessing already

  1065. yours from our

  1066. generous God,

  1067. verses 18 through

  1068. to 23.

  1069. I think Paul is

  1070. both doing two

  1071. things.

  1072. He's anticipating

  1073. an objection to

  1074. what he's been

  1075. saying, but he's

  1076. also starting to

  1077. move towards a

  1078. conclusion.

  1079. He's anticipating

  1080. an objection to

  1081. his notion about

  1082. being spiritually

  1083. mature and useful

  1084. in ministry.

  1085. And I think it

  1086. comes back again,

  1087. circles around,

  1088. like each of his

  1089. points have been in

  1090. these first three

  1091. chapters.

  1092. See, being

  1093. spiritually mature

  1094. ultimately doesn't

  1095. fit with the

  1096. world's understanding

  1097. of what being

  1098. mature is.

  1099. The world's

  1100. understanding of

  1101. being mature is

  1102. about being

  1103. flashy, about

  1104. being outstanding.

  1105. Put simply, the

  1106. world thinks it's

  1107. stupid to put the

  1108. needs and concerns

  1109. of others before

  1110. ourselves.

  1111. The world says

  1112. protect yourself,

  1113. promote yourself,

  1114. get what you can

  1115. for yourself,

  1116. because nobody

  1117. else will.

  1118. The world says

  1119. being quietly

  1120. useful in a

  1121. church family

  1122. rather than

  1123. seeking personal

  1124. popularity and

  1125. reputation is

  1126. wasted effort.

  1127. Paul's response?

  1128. Christ, you have

  1129. it all in Christ.

  1130. How could we

  1131. possibly think that

  1132. having the mind

  1133. of Christ, being

  1134. ministry minded, how

  1135. could we possibly

  1136. think that that is

  1137. stupid?

  1138. Quite the opposite

  1139. in God's eyes.

  1140. Being ministry

  1141. minded, team

  1142. player, committed

  1143. to building

  1144. spiritual maturity

  1145. in this church

  1146. family is simply

  1147. the expression of

  1148. who we are in

  1149. Christ.

  1150. the outworking

  1151. of the mind

  1152. of Christ in

  1153. us.

  1154. So my friends,

  1155. I finish where I

  1156. start with in

  1157. chapter 1,

  1158. verses 1 to 9,

  1159. four weeks ago.

  1160. You don't have

  1161. to compete for

  1162. recognition,

  1163. for approval,

  1164. for security,

  1165. for love,

  1166. because in

  1167. Christ you

  1168. already have all

  1169. of that and

  1170. more besides.

  1171. flip the coin,

  1172. disunity,

  1173. competition,

  1174. jealousy,

  1175. resentment in a

  1176. church family

  1177. always arises

  1178. from thinking

  1179. that others

  1180. have an

  1181. advantage that

  1182. you don't

  1183. have.

  1184. That's the

  1185. source of it.

  1186. but that

  1187. tells me that

  1188. you've forgotten

  1189. that you have

  1190. it all in

  1191. Christ.

  1192. I'll just

  1193. finish with this

  1194. opening sentence.

  1195. if you don't

  1196. aim for this,

  1197. spiritual maturity,

  1198. usefulness in

  1199. this church

  1200. family,

  1201. then my friend,

  1202. you'll hit it

  1203. every time.

  1204. And there

  1205. ends 24 years

  1206. of formal

  1207. ministry,

  1208. for better or

  1209. for worse.

  1210. Thank you for

  1211. the last time

  1212. for listening.

  1213. Sarah.

  1214. do

  1215. you

  1216. you

  1217. you
