  1. Genesis 5.

  2. This is the book of generations of Adam.

  3. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.

  4. Male and female, he created them.

  5. And he blessed them and named them man when they were created.

  6. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness.

  7. After his image and named him Seth.

  8. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years and he had other sons and daughters.

  9. Thus, all the days that Adam lived were 930 years and he died.

  10. When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.

  11. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.

  12. Thus, all the days of Seth were 912 years and he died.

  13. When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.

  14. Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.

  15. Thus, all the days of Enosh were 905 years and he died.

  16. When Kenan had lived 70 years and he fathered Mahalalel.

  17. Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.

  18. Thus, all the days of Mahalalel.

  19. Thus, all the days of Kenan were 910 years and he died.

  20. When Mahalalel had lived 65 years and had other sons and daughters.

  21. Thus, all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years and he died.

  22. When Jared had lived 162 years and he fathered Enoch.

  23. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

  24. Thus, all the days of Jared were 962 years and he died.

  25. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.

  26. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

  27. Thus, all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

  28. Enoch walked with God and he was not for God took him.

  29. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.

  30. Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters.

  31. Thus, all the days of Methuselah were 969 years and he died.

  32. When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying,

  33. Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work

  34. and from the painful toil of our hands.

  35. Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters.

  36. Thus, all the days of Lamech were 777 years and he died.

  37. After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham and Japheth.

  38. When men began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them,

  39. the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive

  40. and they took as their wives any they chose.

  41. Then the Lord said,

  42. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also afterward,

  43. when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them.

  44. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

  45. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth

  46. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  47. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth and it grieved him to his heart.

  48. So the Lord said,

  49. I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land,

  50. man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heaven,

  51. for I am sorry that I have made them.

  52. But Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord.

  53. Good morning.

  54. Just testing the sound.

  55. Yep, it sounds good.

  56. We are glad that Don was able to give the kids' talk.

  57. Actually, he was quite sick last week and he didn't know that it was on for the kids' talk.

  58. He did well, didn't he?

  59. Until the end, I thought I need to do resuscitation on him.

  60. Isn't it great that in the church we can joke about death

  61. because we can look at death and know that he has no power over us anymore.

  62. And today we are going to go through this passage in Genesis

  63. and hope that that will encourage us.

  64. Let us pray first before we go.

  65. Dear God, we are so thankful that you have delivered us from being enslaved to death

  66. and that we can look at life in a different way to live it for your own glory,

  67. not for our own glory.

  68. Thank you, Lord.

  69. May you teach us your way today.

  70. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  71. Amen.

  72. Hebrews 9.27 tells us that there's a point for men to die once

  73. and then comes judgment.

  74. And that's why everyone dies.

  75. Death is not even the end.

  76. There's judgment as well.

  77. So there's two things.

  78. There's both death and judgment that we are facing.

  79. We know that since the rebellion of Adam and Eve,

  80. then they were expelled from the Garden of Eden.

  81. Death is inevitable because we can't assess the tree of life

  82. and our body would die eventually,

  83. regardless of how long people would live on.

  84. Even then, we know that death is not natural.

  85. We have the sense that life should go on.

  86. About two weeks ago,

  87. when I looked at the Facebook posting,

  88. I was dismayed and surprised to find that a person called Mudan Takao died.

  89. I was following his wife's post.

  90. His wife, I mean, Leia and I knew about the wife,

  91. I knew a wife about 35 years ago

  92. when we were serving with Borneo Evangelical Mission

  93. with the literature part of it.

  94. And the wife of one of the board members.

  95. And so I've been friends with her

  96. and she's been posting about where they have been.

  97. They travel a lot, this Mudan Takao and the wife,

  98. because Mudan is a politician

  99. and he visited many places on behalf of the government.

  100. And he actually had a heart attack

  101. when he was overseas representing Malaysia.

  102. He didn't die straight away.

  103. He eventually came back to Malaysia

  104. and then he died a few days later.

  105. It was a shock to me

  106. because Mudan is a unique person.

  107. He is the Lung Bawang.

  108. Lung Bawang is one of the indigenous people

  109. in the state of Sarawak.

  110. And he's a very rare Christian

  111. in the parliament of Malaysia.

  112. He was recently elected as the president of the Senate.

  113. And he's done a lot for his people,

  114. both the whole Malaysian,

  115. and his people, the indigenous people,

  116. and the Christians as well.

  117. What is sad to me is that Mudan has got an older brother

  118. and the brother was also a politician.

  119. He was actually a doctor and then serving his people.

  120. And that brother also died 20 years ago

  121. in a helicopter accident when he was visiting a village

  122. on behalf of the government.

  123. So the father has got these two sons

  124. and both sons die in the service

  125. of the government.

  126. Some of you may have heard me saying

  127. about the Lung Bawang people.

  128. Lung Bawang people were considered

  129. the worst of the people in Malaysia

  130. about 100 years ago.

  131. The British rulers

  132. has given them up,

  133. leaving them to extinct

  134. because they were a people

  135. that is very superstitious, lazy,

  136. and they were drunk most of the time.

  137. Most of the children died anyway

  138. because they didn't get taken care of.

  139. And so the government was saying

  140. just let them be and let them extinct.

  141. But Borneo Evangelical Mission went in

  142. and in a few short years,

  143. the whole tribe became Christian

  144. and they became the most successful people

  145. or tribes in Malaysia.

  146. And Mudan and his brother Jackson,

  147. their testimony for that,

  148. they were highly educated

  149. and they became the leaders

  150. in the government

  151. and in the church as well.

  152. But hearing about their death,

  153. I have this sense,

  154. I think you can sense that

  155. these people shouldn't die.

  156. that there's a sense that

  157. at least good people

  158. shouldn't die

  159. and that should not be

  160. the end of these things.

  161. And as you look at

  162. chapter 5 of Genesis,

  163. that is what it's saying.

  164. These people in chapter 5,

  165. at least,

  166. they shouldn't die.

  167. I mean,

  168. they still die.

  169. in chapter 5,

  170. it's a genealogy of

  171. the descendants of Seth.

  172. And we only see the record

  173. of their birth

  174. when their father

  175. gives birth to them

  176. and then they die

  177. or who they get birth to.

  178. That's all.

  179. Compared to chapter 4,

  180. when we look at

  181. the descendants of Cain,

  182. you can see that

  183. they talk about

  184. the achievements

  185. like Jabba was

  186. the father of all those

  187. who have livestock

  188. or livestock farming.

  189. Juba was the father

  190. of musicians.

  191. Tubacan was the father

  192. of blacksmiths.

  193. And about all their achievements

  194. and their characters,

  195. a bit about

  196. Namek's anger

  197. in killing someone.

  198. But there's no mention

  199. about their death.

  200. Why is such a difference

  201. between these two lines?

  202. You see,

  203. the descendants of Cain,

  204. first of all,

  205. to mention that

  206. there are two Namek's

  207. in each side

  208. and then two Enoch's as well,

  209. so don't get mixed up

  210. on this.

  211. So descendants of Cain,

  212. the people who

  213. live for their own dreams,

  214. for their own kingdoms,

  215. that's why they are

  216. quite industrious,

  217. and they invent things,

  218. they want to improve life.

  219. And they are not bad things,

  220. but at the same time,

  221. they do not believe in God,

  222. and so they do

  223. their own things,

  224. they can kill people

  225. to achieve what they want,

  226. and so there is no

  227. morality in that sense

  228. to follow.

  229. And these are the people

  230. of the world.

  231. I suppose they will

  232. fear death themselves,

  233. and they will invent things

  234. to prolong their life,

  235. and I won't be surprised

  236. if there's no death

  237. in that tribe

  238. until the flood comes in.

  239. Maybe,

  240. I'm not sure,

  241. but in any case,

  242. their death is not

  243. relevant to us,

  244. and that's why

  245. it's not mentioned.

  246. But unlike in chapter 5,

  247. when they come to

  248. the descendants of Seth,

  249. their deaths are mentioned,

  250. and that's why

  251. it's sort of been

  252. precious in God's eye

  253. in that.

  254. Seth is born

  255. in the image of Adam,

  256. and Adam was made

  257. in the image of God.

  258. So there is a

  259. real difference.

  260. Adam has been made

  261. in the image of God,

  262. but he damaged

  263. that image

  264. in his rebellion

  265. against God,

  266. and Seth was born

  267. in the image of Adam,

  268. so he inherited

  269. whatever Adam has.

  270. So how did Adam,

  271. what's the relationship

  272. between Adam and God

  273. after he sinned against God?

  274. we,

  275. when we come to

  276. the New Testament,

  277. Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  278. chapter 3,

  279. verse 38,

  280. we talk about

  281. the genealogy,

  282. and it's mentioned

  283. Adam,

  284. the son of God.

  285. So despite the fact

  286. that Adam

  287. sinned against God,

  288. Adam was

  289. considered

  290. as the son

  291. of God.

  292. and from there,

  293. we can say

  294. that

  295. Seth

  296. is also

  297. considered

  298. as a son

  299. of God

  300. because he

  301. inherited

  302. Adam's image.

  303. And so

  304. that line,

  305. the firstborn

  306. son

  307. of

  308. Seth's descendants

  309. all inherited

  310. that

  311. image of

  312. Adam,

  313. and we can say

  314. that they are

  315. the sons of God,

  316. the children of God,

  317. and that is

  318. a relational

  319. term that is

  320. God relate to them

  321. as their father.

  322. And that's why

  323. the achievement

  324. in life

  325. is not that important.

  326. It's not

  327. recorded

  328. because

  329. what is important

  330. is how

  331. they relate

  332. to God.

  333. We can

  334. think about

  335. that

  336. when we

  337. do die,

  338. how would

  339. we want

  340. people to

  341. remember us.

  342. I suppose

  343. most people

  344. would want

  345. people to

  346. remember

  347. our

  348. achievements,

  349. what we

  350. have done.

  351. Consider

  352. the Apostle

  353. John,

  354. when the

  355. Apostle

  356. John dies,

  357. if you ask

  358. him what

  359. he would

  360. like to

  361. remember

  362. as,

  363. I don't

  364. think he

  365. would like

  366. to remember

  367. as someone

  368. who has

  369. the Apostle

  370. who had

  371. written the

  372. book of

  373. John,

  374. or the

  375. Epistles

  376. or Revelation

  377. or started

  378. whatever church,

  379. I would

  380. think from

  381. his writing

  382. he would

  383. want to

  384. remember us

  385. the disciple

  386. who was

  387. loved by

  388. Jesus

  389. because that's

  390. why he

  391. called himself.

  392. And that's

  393. enough.

  394. That's enough.

  395. That's more

  396. than enough.

  397. It doesn't

  398. matter what

  399. you and I

  400. have done

  401. in life

  402. if we

  403. are loved

  404. by the

  405. Lord Jesus

  406. Christ

  407. and we

  408. are relating

  409. to God

  410. as he

  411. is our

  412. father.

  413. But still,

  414. they die.

  415. And the

  416. fact that

  417. the death

  418. is written

  419. in there,

  420. it means

  421. that the

  422. author of

  423. Genesis

  424. is saying

  425. that no,

  426. they shouldn't

  427. die.

  428. They are

  429. God's

  430. people.

  431. Why should

  432. they die?

  433. And we

  434. also can

  435. go back

  436. to chapter

  437. 3,

  438. verse 15

  439. when God

  440. sort of

  441. promised

  442. that there

  443. would be

  444. someone who

  445. would come

  446. who was born

  447. of the woman

  448. who would

  449. crush the

  450. servant's

  451. head.

  452. That means

  453. to reverse

  454. the curse

  455. that God

  456. has put

  457. on this

  458. world.

  459. And we

  460. see that

  461. in the

  462. line of

  463. Seth,

  464. people,

  465. they are

  466. waiting for

  467. this person.

  468. to come.

  469. But Adam,

  470. after living

  471. 930 years,

  472. he dies.

  473. Seth,

  474. 912 years,

  475. and he

  476. dies.

  477. Enosh,

  478. 905 years,

  479. and he

  480. dies.

  481. And it

  482. keeps going

  483. on until

  484. the seventh

  485. generation when

  486. Enosh came

  487. along.

  488. And that is

  489. a change

  490. in that.

  491. Enosh,

  492. what we've

  493. got,

  494. 300 years,

  495. then he

  496. was not.

  497. God has

  498. taken him.

  499. So was

  500. Enosh the

  501. person who

  502. was going

  503. to reverse

  504. this death?

  505. Was he

  506. good enough

  507. to do that?

  508. You know that,

  509. no, he

  510. wasn't.

  511. God took

  512. him, but

  513. the future

  514. generation,

  515. they also

  516. died.

  517. Why wasn't

  518. Enosh

  519. sufficient?

  520. I think

  521. at least

  522. there are

  523. two things.

  524. First of

  525. all,

  526. Enosh was

  527. born in

  528. the image

  529. of Adam

  530. as well.

  531. And so

  532. he already

  533. inherited

  534. Adam's

  535. sinful

  536. nature.

  537. And so

  538. he's not

  539. qualified to

  540. do that.

  541. And he

  542. walked with

  543. God only

  544. after his

  545. son was

  546. born at

  547. 65 years

  548. old.

  549. The second

  550. reason is

  551. that Enosh,

  552. paradoxically,

  553. because Enosh

  554. didn't die,

  555. so he

  556. couldn't be

  557. the person

  558. who reversed

  559. the curse.

  560. The person

  561. who can

  562. reverse the

  563. curse is

  564. the one

  565. who needs

  566. to die.

  567. But from

  568. the story

  569. of Enosh,

  570. this gives

  571. us hope

  572. that death

  573. is not

  574. necessarily

  575. inevitable.

  576. There's at

  577. least this

  578. person who

  579. didn't die.

  580. In actual

  581. fact,

  582. think about

  583. it,

  584. when we

  585. said,

  586. Enosh

  587. walked with

  588. God 300

  589. years,

  590. what does

  591. that mean

  592. to walk

  593. with God?

  594. Actually,

  595. Enosh did

  596. die symbolically

  597. because he

  598. died to

  599. himself.

  600. If we

  601. want to

  602. walk with

  603. God,

  604. we need

  605. to die

  606. to ourselves.

  607. It's no

  608. longer I

  609. who live,

  610. but Christ

  611. who live

  612. in me.

  613. And Enosh

  614. in that

  615. way did

  616. die and

  617. live for

  618. God.

  619. But he

  620. died happily

  621. in that

  622. way because

  623. he was

  624. attracted

  625. by God

  626. and not

  627. been forced

  628. into it.

  629. He did

  630. that joyfully.

  631. So there's

  632. Enosh and

  633. then three

  634. generations

  635. later,

  636. we come

  637. to another

  638. break.

  639. There is

  640. Noah.

  641. Noah,

  642. when

  643. Namek

  644. fathered him,

  645. Namek

  646. said that,

  647. I'll call

  648. him Noah,

  649. hopefully,

  650. he said,

  651. out of this

  652. land that

  653. the Lord

  654. has cursed,

  655. this one

  656. shall bring

  657. us relief

  658. from our

  659. work and

  660. the painful

  661. toys of

  662. our hands.

  663. Namek's

  664. prediction

  665. tells us

  666. that these

  667. people,

  668. they've been

  669. waiting for

  670. this someone

  671. to come.

  672. He said,

  673. finally,

  674. this one

  675. should be

  676. the one.

  677. And

  678. also,

  679. what has

  680. been troubling

  681. them is

  682. the work

  683. of their

  684. hands,

  685. the painful

  686. toys.

  687. It's

  688. painful to

  689. work because

  690. it takes a

  691. lot of

  692. effort to

  693. get any

  694. return from

  695. the land.

  696. Not only

  697. that,

  698. in the

  699. world,

  700. in that

  701. time,

  702. I think

  703. there were

  704. a lot of

  705. restlessness.

  706. Even if

  707. you get

  708. some return

  709. from the

  710. land,

  711. somebody

  712. else will

  713. come and

  714. rob it

  715. from you.

  716. It's a

  717. lot of

  718. fighting,

  719. competition,

  720. quarrels in

  721. the world,

  722. and people

  723. have said

  724. enough of

  725. living like

  726. that.

  727. And they're

  728. waiting for

  729. this someone

  730. to come,

  731. and they

  732. hope that

  733. Noah was

  734. the one.

  735. Because Noah's

  736. name means

  737. rest.

  738. Would Noah

  739. bring rest

  740. to the

  741. world?

  742. Think about

  743. it.

  744. I think

  745. in some

  746. way he

  747. did.

  748. Not that

  749. he, I

  750. mean,

  751. his time,

  752. not that

  753. he didn't

  754. bring through

  755. by Noah.

  756. The rest

  757. came by

  758. the death

  759. of everyone.

  760. When there's

  761. no one,

  762. nobody

  763. fighting

  764. with anyone,

  765. so there's

  766. rest.

  767. It's not

  768. a satisfactory

  769. rest, but

  770. it's still

  771. some sort

  772. of rest

  773. to the

  774. world, at

  775. least,

  776. when everybody

  777. dies.

  778. There's no

  779. more pollution,

  780. there's no

  781. more fighting.

  782. And so,

  783. in a way,

  784. the prophecy

  785. came true,

  786. not in the

  787. way that

  788. people would

  789. hope it

  790. was,

  791. it would

  792. be.

  793. And so,

  794. the world

  795. was facing

  796. destruction

  797. in Noah's

  798. time,

  799. but there's

  800. still many

  801. years to

  802. come before

  803. this will

  804. come true

  805. because he

  806. needed to

  807. build an

  808. ark which

  809. would go

  810. there next

  811. week.

  812. But why

  813. was the

  814. flood

  815. necessary

  816. in terms

  817. of why

  818. we

  819. find it

  820. very hard

  821. to imagine.

  822. I suppose

  823. the world

  824. at that

  825. time was

  826. not as

  827. big as

  828. the world

  829. now in

  830. the case,

  831. but still

  832. a lot of

  833. people would

  834. die from

  835. it.

  836. And that

  837. will bring

  838. us to

  839. chapter 6

  840. of Genesis.

  841. In chapter

  842. 6, there

  843. are three

  844. difficult

  845. verses to

  846. understand.

  847. But through

  848. these three

  849. verses, we

  850. can also

  851. understand

  852. God's heart

  853. and why

  854. this needs

  855. to be

  856. done.

  857. The first

  858. thing is

  859. to do

  860. with the

  861. sons of

  862. God and

  863. the sons

  864. of man.

  865. You talk

  866. about the

  867. sons of

  868. God,

  869. seeing the

  870. daughters of

  871. men being

  872. beautiful,

  873. attractive,

  874. and they

  875. marry them,

  876. and then

  877. they produce

  878. this giant.

  879. Who are

  880. those people?

  881. And there's

  882. a lot of

  883. interpretation

  884. in this

  885. area.

  886. Some will

  887. say that

  888. the sons

  889. of God

  890. are the

  891. angelic

  892. beings who

  893. come down

  894. to earth

  895. and marry

  896. children of

  897. man,

  898. and then

  899. produce this

  900. giant.

  901. I think

  902. to fit

  903. into the

  904. storyline,

  905. the sons

  906. of God,

  907. as I

  908. mentioned,

  909. would be

  910. the

  911. descendants

  912. of Seth,

  913. and the

  914. sons or

  915. daughters of

  916. man,

  917. the descendants

  918. of Cain,

  919. and their

  920. intermarriage

  921. just corrupted

  922. the whole

  923. world.

  924. Even the

  925. descendants of

  926. Seth would

  927. be a

  928. group that

  929. would call

  930. upon the

  931. name of

  932. God,

  933. as the

  934. end of

  935. chapter 4

  936. tells us.

  937. But with

  938. the intermarriage,

  939. even them

  940. have been

  941. corrupted,

  942. and the

  943. whole world

  944. becomes

  945. unbearable

  946. to live.

  947. It's more

  948. like hell,

  949. as the

  950. people

  951. turning into.

  952. And so

  953. the destruction

  954. is necessary

  955. to cleanse

  956. the world.

  957. The second

  958. one is

  959. God

  960. regretting,

  961. God

  962. seems to

  963. have to

  964. regret

  965. created

  966. human beings

  967. seeing it

  968. comes to

  969. this

  970. stage.

  971. And then

  972. we will

  973. have trouble

  974. understanding

  975. could God

  976. regret what

  977. he's done?

  978. We need

  979. to think

  980. about our

  981. regret compared

  982. to God's

  983. regret.

  984. When we

  985. say we

  986. regret

  987. something,

  988. we can

  989. look back

  990. in the

  991. past what

  992. we have

  993. done or

  994. not done

  995. that we

  996. regret now,

  997. but we

  998. can't do

  999. anything about

  1000. it because

  1001. the chance

  1002. to do

  1003. it is

  1004. over.

  1005. We can

  1006. only regret

  1007. about it.

  1008. But would

  1009. God look

  1010. back and

  1011. say I've

  1012. done something,

  1013. a mere

  1014. mistake,

  1015. and I

  1016. can't fix

  1017. it?

  1018. First of

  1019. all,

  1020. we've got

  1021. there's no

  1022. time.

  1023. There's no

  1024. looking back

  1025. for God

  1026. in a sense.

  1027. God

  1028. always is.

  1029. And so

  1030. even time

  1031. wise,

  1032. God cannot

  1033. be like

  1034. us.

  1035. We look

  1036. back in

  1037. time and

  1038. say,

  1039. regret,

  1040. I haven't

  1041. done

  1042. something.

  1043. Because

  1044. to God

  1045. there's no

  1046. time,

  1047. a restriction.

  1048. Secondly,

  1049. if you

  1050. say God

  1051. has made

  1052. mistake,

  1053. then who

  1054. is the

  1055. one who

  1056. judged

  1057. God and

  1058. said,

  1059. this is

  1060. the way

  1061. you should

  1062. do?

  1063. Whoever,

  1064. if we

  1065. judge God

  1066. about what

  1067. is the

  1068. right thing

  1069. for God

  1070. to do,

  1071. then we

  1072. will become

  1073. God

  1074. ourselves.

  1075. And so

  1076. whatever God

  1077. does,

  1078. it is

  1079. best,

  1080. regardless

  1081. of what

  1082. we think

  1083. it is.

  1084. And so

  1085. in that

  1086. way,

  1087. God's

  1088. regret is

  1089. unlike our

  1090. regret.

  1091. I would

  1092. think it

  1093. would be

  1094. more consistent

  1095. for grief,

  1096. God's

  1097. grief about

  1098. this thing

  1099. come to

  1100. this stage

  1101. and the

  1102. action that

  1103. he is going

  1104. to take

  1105. for the

  1106. world.

  1107. If we

  1108. go to

  1109. Jeremiah,

  1110. we might

  1111. have this

  1112. sense of

  1113. God's

  1114. grief.

  1115. Jeremiah,

  1116. as a

  1117. prophet,

  1118. has been

  1119. telling the

  1120. Israelites

  1121. to return

  1122. to God,

  1123. otherwise

  1124. the Babylonians

  1125. would come

  1126. and conquer

  1127. them.

  1128. Nobody,

  1129. I suppose,

  1130. almost none,

  1131. maybe only two

  1132. people in the

  1133. book of

  1134. Jeremiah,

  1135. that would

  1136. listen to

  1137. Jeremiah.

  1138. The whole

  1139. nation didn't

  1140. listen to

  1141. him.

  1142. And so

  1143. the Babylonian

  1144. came,

  1145. and then

  1146. Jeremiah wanted

  1147. to stay,

  1148. but he was

  1149. forced by

  1150. people to

  1151. run to

  1152. Egypt.

  1153. So Jeremiah

  1154. had a very

  1155. hard time

  1156. as a prophet.

  1157. He was

  1158. mistreated by

  1159. his own

  1160. people,

  1161. even to the

  1162. end.

  1163. And his

  1164. scribe,

  1165. one of those

  1166. who supported

  1167. him,

  1168. called

  1169. Baruch,

  1170. he started

  1171. to complain

  1172. against God

  1173. in the sense

  1174. that it's

  1175. not fair.

  1176. I mean,

  1177. we have been

  1178. serving you

  1179. faithfully

  1180. all this

  1181. time,

  1182. and now

  1183. enemy came,

  1184. we are

  1185. forced to

  1186. go to

  1187. Egypt to

  1188. run,

  1189. run away,

  1190. even though

  1191. Jeremiah knew

  1192. that they

  1193. should stay

  1194. in Jerusalem.

  1195. And so

  1196. God,

  1197. in reply

  1198. to Baruch

  1199. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 45:4

  1200. chapter 45,

  1201. verses 4

  1202. and 5,

  1203. God said,

  1204. Behold,

  1205. what I have

  1206. built,

  1207. I am

  1208. breaking down,

  1209. and what I

  1210. have planted,

  1211. I am

  1212. plucking up.

  1213. That is

  1214. the whole

  1215. land.

  1216. Do you

  1217. seek great

  1218. things for

  1219. yourself?

  1220. Seek them

  1221. not,

  1222. for behold,

  1223. I am

  1224. bringing

  1225. disaster

  1226. upon all

  1227. the flesh

  1228. declares

  1229. the Lord.

  1230. Can you

  1231. sense or

  1232. feel what

  1233. God was

  1234. feeling?

  1235. I mean,

  1236. God didn't

  1237. delight in

  1238. destroying

  1239. his people,

  1240. but there's

  1241. something that

  1242. is necessary.

  1243. If you ask

  1244. why there's

  1245. necessary,

  1246. we can

  1247. understand some,

  1248. but we

  1249. cannot

  1250. understand

  1251. fully.

  1252. We

  1253. couldn't

  1254. see the

  1255. whole

  1256. history.

  1257. we are

  1258. not

  1259. God.

  1260. The

  1261. third

  1262. problem

  1263. in this

  1264. verses

  1265. is

  1266. 120

  1267. years.

  1268. Men

  1269. shall

  1270. not

  1271. live

  1272. more

  1273. than

  1274. 120

  1275. years.

  1276. So,

  1277. we can

  1278. understand

  1279. that as

  1280. God said,

  1281. from that

  1282. point of

  1283. words,

  1284. people

  1285. would not

  1286. live so

  1287. long.

  1288. The most

  1289. is 120

  1290. years,

  1291. and they

  1292. would die,

  1293. which is

  1294. possible.

  1295. people,

  1296. but then

  1297. we know

  1298. that even

  1299. after the

  1300. flood,

  1301. there are

  1302. people who

  1303. live a

  1304. long time.

  1305. Many

  1306. generations

  1307. later,

  1308. Abraham

  1309. lived 175

  1310. years.

  1311. His

  1312. grand

  1313. child,

  1314. Jacob,

  1315. lived

  1316. 147

  1317. years.

  1318. So,

  1319. it's not

  1320. very

  1321. consistent

  1322. to say

  1323. that men

  1324. cannot live

  1325. more than

  1326. 120 years

  1327. from that

  1328. point of

  1329. course.

  1330. Possible.

  1331. But I

  1332. would think

  1333. to be

  1334. consistent

  1335. with the

  1336. coming of

  1337. the flood,

  1338. men

  1339. cannot have

  1340. about 120

  1341. years before

  1342. the flood

  1343. would come,

  1344. and then

  1345. they would

  1346. die.

  1347. And that

  1348. also tells

  1349. us that

  1350. the flood

  1351. didn't come

  1352. suddenly.

  1353. God gave

  1354. people a

  1355. long time

  1356. to repent.

  1357. And we

  1358. know that

  1359. from 2

  1360. Peter

  1361. Noah was

  1362. a preacher.

  1363. He was

  1364. preaching as

  1365. well while

  1366. he was

  1367. building the

  1368. ark.

  1369. And there

  1370. is plenty

  1371. of time

  1372. for people

  1373. to repent,

  1374. but nobody

  1375. listened,

  1376. except for

  1377. the family

  1378. of,

  1379. except for

  1380. Noah and

  1381. his family.

  1382. But still,

  1383. we are

  1384. thankful that

  1385. Noah and

  1386. the family

  1387. obeyed,

  1388. and that

  1389. gave us

  1390. another hope,

  1391. that is

  1392. judgment,

  1393. is not

  1394. inevitable.

  1395. So,

  1396. Enoch tells

  1397. us that

  1398. death is

  1399. not

  1400. inevitable,

  1401. Noah tells

  1402. us that

  1403. judgment is

  1404. not inevitable

  1405. because Noah

  1406. and the

  1407. family escaped

  1408. the judgment,

  1409. though they

  1410. did die

  1411. later.

  1412. And we

  1413. are thankful

  1414. that Noah

  1415. found favor

  1416. in the

  1417. eyes of

  1418. God,

  1419. and that

  1420. gives us

  1421. hope for

  1422. humans.

  1423. And this

  1424. is a new

  1425. world after

  1426. Noah has

  1427. come by.

  1428. and the

  1429. genealogy

  1430. of God

  1431. continued on,

  1432. and he

  1433. continued on

  1434. for many

  1435. generations,

  1436. until after

  1437. 66 generations

  1438. later, the

  1439. Lord Jesus

  1440. Christ came.

  1441. And the

  1442. Lord Jesus

  1443. Christ was

  1444. the last

  1445. one in

  1446. this

  1447. genealogy.

  1448. Why was he

  1449. the last

  1450. one?

  1451. Because he

  1452. was the

  1453. one who

  1454. everyone

  1455. had been

  1456. waiting for.

  1457. Jesus was

  1458. born in

  1459. the image

  1460. of God.

  1461. And so

  1462. he is

  1463. qualified to

  1464. reverse the

  1465. curse of

  1466. God.

  1467. So

  1468. in Jesus

  1469. we see a

  1470. better

  1471. Enoch,

  1472. because Jesus

  1473. didn't only

  1474. walk with

  1475. God himself,

  1476. he helped

  1477. other people

  1478. to walk

  1479. with God.

  1480. In Jesus

  1481. we see a

  1482. greater

  1483. Noah,

  1484. because

  1485. Jesus

  1486. didn't

  1487. only

  1488. save

  1489. himself,

  1490. he saved

  1491. others.

  1492. In Noah's

  1493. time,

  1494. rest came

  1495. by everybody

  1496. dying.

  1497. In Jesus

  1498. time,

  1499. rest came

  1500. by Jesus

  1501. himself

  1502. dying.

  1503. And in

  1504. Jesus,

  1505. death

  1506. can no

  1507. longer

  1508. enslave us.

  1509. death.

  1510. And in

  1511. him,

  1512. the worst

  1513. that death

  1514. can do

  1515. is the

  1516. best that

  1517. it can

  1518. do for

  1519. us.

  1520. Because

  1521. when

  1522. death

  1523. take away

  1524. this

  1525. earthly

  1526. tent,

  1527. this body

  1528. from us,

  1529. God is

  1530. going to

  1531. give us

  1532. a new

  1533. house that

  1534. will enable

  1535. us to see

  1536. him face

  1537. to face.

  1538. So we

  1539. don't need

  1540. to fear

  1541. that.

  1542. in Christ.

  1543. And the

  1544. genealogy

  1545. actually goes

  1546. on even

  1547. after Christ,

  1548. but it's

  1549. a different

  1550. genealogy.

  1551. And it's

  1552. generally with

  1553. so many

  1554. people that

  1555. it can't

  1556. be written

  1557. because it's

  1558. too many.

  1559. And it

  1560. wouldn't

  1561. be just

  1562. right to

  1563. say that

  1564. Wudan

  1565. Takao,

  1566. father,

  1567. two sons

  1568. and a

  1569. daughter,

  1570. and he

  1571. dies at

  1572. age 65.

  1573. And at

  1574. the end

  1575. he would

  1576. add,

  1577. and in

  1578. Christ,

  1579. he lived

  1580. again

  1581. forevermore.

  1582. And that

  1583. would apply

  1584. to all

  1585. who are

  1586. in Christ.

  1587. With

  1588. that

  1589. knowledge,

  1590. what does

  1591. it,

  1592. how does

  1593. it make

  1594. us live

  1595. differently?

  1596. In

  1597. 1928,

  1598. three men,

  1599. Hudson

  1600. Southwell,

  1601. Frank

  1602. Davidson,

  1603. and the

  1604. last one

  1605. is

  1606. Carly,

  1607. 1928,

  1608. they

  1609. sell from

  1610. Melbourne

  1611. to

  1612. Borneo.

  1613. And they

  1614. were the

  1615. ones who

  1616. brought the

  1617. gospel to

  1618. the Lung

  1619. Ba Wan

  1620. people.

  1621. You

  1622. might not

  1623. be able to

  1624. imagine how

  1625. difficult it

  1626. would be.

  1627. I mean,

  1628. the selling

  1629. trip would

  1630. be bad

  1631. enough.

  1632. if you

  1633. go to

  1634. the

  1635. Lung Ba Wan

  1636. villages at

  1637. that time,

  1638. there are

  1639. diseases

  1640. everywhere,

  1641. very dirty.

  1642. There's no,

  1643. I'm not sure

  1644. how they

  1645. survive,

  1646. actually.

  1647. And there

  1648. are still

  1649. head hunters

  1650. around the

  1651. area,

  1652. and they

  1653. don't

  1654. know the

  1655. language.

  1656. But they

  1657. went.

  1658. Why did

  1659. they do

  1660. that?

  1661. Because

  1662. death is

  1663. no longer

  1664. a problem

  1665. for them.

  1666. Judgment is

  1667. no longer a

  1668. problem for

  1669. them.

  1670. And they

  1671. want other

  1672. people to

  1673. know that

  1674. the Lord

  1675. Jesus Christ

  1676. is the

  1677. life and

  1678. the

  1679. resurrection.

  1680. And

  1681. through them,

  1682. that brings

  1683. such a

  1684. change to

  1685. many people.

  1686. And among

  1687. those people,

  1688. one who was

  1689. born during

  1690. the time was

  1691. called

  1692. Takao,

  1693. Wudang

  1694. Takao's

  1695. father.

  1696. Wudang,

  1697. the son of

  1698. Takao.

  1699. Takao is

  1700. 91 years

  1701. old, and

  1702. he stood

  1703. up during

  1704. Wudang's

  1705. funeral.

  1706. He wasn't

  1707. actually scheduled

  1708. to talk, but

  1709. he wanted to

  1710. talk.

  1711. Isn't it

  1712. sad?

  1713. A father

  1714. who had

  1715. two such

  1716. good sons

  1717. and both

  1718. died before

  1719. him.

  1720. But when

  1721. he talked,

  1722. he didn't

  1723. say much

  1724. about their

  1725. achievements.

  1726. He talked

  1727. a lot about

  1728. the Lord

  1729. Jesus Christ,

  1730. about their

  1731. hope in

  1732. the Lord

  1733. Jesus Christ.

  1734. And he

  1735. called out

  1736. asking people

  1737. to believe

  1738. in the

  1739. Lord Jesus

  1740. Christ.

  1741. You may

  1742. not know

  1743. how difficult

  1744. it is.

  1745. The

  1746. service was

  1747. attended

  1748. by many

  1749. long Christians,

  1750. many high

  1751. power people

  1752. in their

  1753. miniatures.

  1754. In ordinary

  1755. times, you

  1756. say that I

  1757. suppose you

  1758. would get

  1759. jailed in

  1760. Malaysia.

  1761. But he

  1762. didn't care

  1763. because he

  1764. had that

  1765. hope and

  1766. he wanted

  1767. other people

  1768. to know

  1769. that too.

  1770. If this

  1771. knowledge, I

  1772. hope that if

  1773. you are not

  1774. in this

  1775. genealogy of

  1776. the Lord

  1777. Jesus Christ,

  1778. I hope that

  1779. you would

  1780. want to be

  1781. in John 1,

  1782. John 1,

    John 1:12

  1783. verse 12

  1784. says that

  1785. for those

  1786. who receive

  1787. him, who

  1788. believe in

  1789. his name,

  1790. he gave

  1791. the power,

  1792. the right

  1793. to become

  1794. children of

  1795. God.

  1796. And if we

  1797. are already

  1798. in this

  1799. genealogy of

  1800. the Lord

  1801. Jesus Christ,

  1802. I hope that

  1803. we will learn

  1804. to walk

  1805. with God

  1806. like he

  1807. not did.

  1808. let us

  1809. pray.

  1810. Let us

  1811. pray.

  1812. Almighty God,

  1813. we are

  1814. thankful that

  1815. we can call

  1816. your Father

  1817. and have

  1818. this renewed

  1819. relationship with

  1820. you in the

  1821. Lord Jesus

  1822. Christ.

  1823. Lord,

  1824. may you

  1825. attract us,

  1826. help us to

  1827. see your

  1828. glory in

  1829. the face

  1830. of the

  1831. Lord Jesus

  1832. Christ.

  1833. That we

  1834. might walk

  1835. with you

  1836. joyfully.

  1837. Thank you,

  1838. Lord.

  1839. We pray in

  1840. Jesus' name.

  1841. Amen.
