  1. We're having two readings this morning.

  2. So the first is Genesis 12, 10 to 20.

  3. And the second is Genesis 14, 14 to 24.

  4. Now, there was a famine in the land.

  5. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there.

  6. For the famine was severe in the land.

  7. When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai,

  8. I know that you are a woman, beautiful in appearance.

  9. And when the Egyptians see you, they will say, this is his wife.

  10. Then they'll kill me.

  11. But they will let you live.

  12. Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you.

  13. And that my life may be spared for your sake.

  14. When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

  15. When the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh.

  16. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

  17. And for her sake, he dealt well with Abram.

  18. And he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys and camels.

  19. But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

  20. So Pharaoh called Abram and said,

  21. What is this you've done to me?

  22. Why did you not tell me that this was your wife?

  23. Why did you say she is my sister so that I took her for my wife?

  24. Now then, here is your wife.

  25. Take her and go.

  26. And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him.

  27. And they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

  28. So before our next reading, some more chaos occurs with Abraham's nephew, Lot, being given the choice of where he might live.

  29. And he chooses Sodom.

  30. However, a little while later, the people of Sodom are then taken captive by surrounding kings.

  31. So we move to chapter 14, verse 14, to see what happens next.

  32. When Abram heard that his kinsmen had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

  33. And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus.

  34. Then he brought back all the possessions and also brought back his kinsmen, Lot, with his possessions and the women and the people.

  35. After his return from the defeat of Chidolamah and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Sharek.

  36. That is the king's valley.

  37. And Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine.

  38. He was a priest of God Most High.

  39. And he blessed him and said,

  40. Blessed be Abraham by God Most High,

  41. possessor of heaven and earth.

  42. And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.

  43. And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

  44. And the king of Sodom said to Abram,

  45. Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.

  46. But Abram said to the king of Sodom,

  47. I have lifted my hand to the Lord God Most High,

  48. possessor of heaven and earth,

  49. that I would not take a thread,

  50. a sandal strap or anything that is yours,

  51. lest you should say,

  52. I have made Abram rich.

  53. I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten

  54. and the share of the men who went with me.

  55. Let Eina, Eshkol and Mamre take their share.

  56. Well, in the baptisms,

  57. we've just had the joy of witnessing expressions of faith.

  58. I want to ask the question,

  59. what does the life of faith look like?

  60. Like, what are they signing up for, in a sense?

  61. I'm going to suggest first a few things it's not.

  62. Some people find a church when life isn't going well.

  63. And that's a really good move.

  64. Like, that's a good idea.

  65. If that's your motivation in coming to church,

  66. maybe even today.

  67. Like, God has all the time in the world

  68. for people who aren't doing well

  69. and know they need help.

  70. Like, that's a great move.

  71. You're surrounded by like-minded people.

  72. We're all sinners struggling here.

  73. We're rejoicing in Jesus.

  74. But sometimes people look for a church

  75. and I think sometimes there's a really wrong expectation.

  76. And the thinking goes something like this.

  77. If I add some religion,

  78. if I add some volunteering in my life,

  79. then God will restore my relationships

  80. or God will free me from addictions.

  81. God will help raise my kids to be good people.

  82. God will help raise my kids to be good people.

  83. It's seeing faith as like you add a bit of God in your life.

  84. That's trying to bargain with God.

  85. Faith is not about adding a bit of religion in.

  86. There's a musical, The Book of Mormon.

  87. I haven't watched the whole thing.

  88. I've just been listening to a few of the songs lately.

  89. And there's a song, I Believe.

  90. And Elder Price, the main character, sings,

  91. I believe that God has a plan for all of us.

  92. I believe that plan involves me getting my own planet.

  93. What?

  94. Is that faith?

  95. That you're working towards this enormous promise in the afterlife

  96. as long as you sacrifice everything for God in this life?

  97. I think some people view that's what faith is about.

  98. It's not about your religious efforts.

  99. That's what faith isn't.

  100. God tells us.

  101. He gives us definitions of faith.

  102. But he does more than definitions in his word.

  103. He gives us people.

  104. He gives us people as examples.

  105. And God calls Abraham the picture of faith.

  106. He is the pin-up boy you should have in your bedroom of faith.

  107. Abraham.

  108. Abraham.

  109. Just to underline where I'm getting this from,

  110. Galatians chapter 3 says,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  111. Know then that it is those of faith who are the children of Abraham.

  112. Not just natural born descendants, but those of faith.

  113. Those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham,

  114. the man of faith.

  115. He is the man of faith.

  116. Abraham is the turning point in human history.

  117. The rest of the world trying to make a good life for themselves apart from God.

  118. And then Abraham.

  119. He's the picture of faith.

  120. When I made my wedding vows to Emma 11 or so years ago,

  121. in those vows, there's no ifs or buts or maybes.

  122. They're unconditional.

  123. In sickness and in health,

  124. but as long as you're kind to me.

  125. Or if work isn't busy.

  126. There's no ifs or buts.

  127. They're unconditional.

  128. Now the big difference between me and God is

  129. God completely is faithful in keeping his promises.

  130. He gives unconditional promises to Abraham.

  131. No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

  132. I will bless you, Abraham.

  133. I will make your name great.

  134. I will make a massive family out of you.

  135. I'm going to give you land as a permanent home.

  136. I'm going to treat others according to how they treat you.

  137. I'm blessing you, Abraham, that through you,

  138. I'm going to bless the entire world.

  139. Full stop.

  140. No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

  141. Now imagine if God said to you,

  142. I will bless you forever.

  143. Full stop.

  144. Wow.

  145. What a promise to live by.

  146. And that's why I'm quoting Galatians 3

  147. because I'm not sure about you,

  148. but I haven't had God audibly give me a promise like that.

  149. But the promise to Abraham is for you and I.

  150. We're called to believe in the same promise.

  151. Galatians 3 also says this.

  152. And here's the connection to baptism.

  153. I'm not going to go into how all this works.

  154. I'm not even sure I understand how all this works,

  155. but just see the connection.

  156. As many of you as were baptised into Christ

  157. have put on Christ.

  158. And if you belong to Christ,

  159. then you are Abraham's offspring,

  160. heirs according to promise,

  161. heirs of all the blessing according to promise.

  162. If you belong to Christ,

  163. the promises to Abraham, they're yours.

  164. If you belong to Christ.

  165. So don't go from Abraham to you.

  166. Go from Abraham to Christ to you.

  167. That's important.

  168. So in these stories of Abraham,

  169. we're going to see what faith looks like,

  170. what the life of faith really looks like.

  171. I'm going to define it like this

  172. from what I think the passage is saying.

  173. Faith is when God's promises are even bigger

  174. than his own failures,

  175. than other people's failures,

  176. even bigger than his opportunities to gain.

  177. God's promises are the biggest reality in Abraham's life.

  178. That's what the life of faith looks like.

  179. So imagine if...

  180. So Emma and I go to event cinemas at Glendale.

  181. We see a movie.

  182. It ends late, like 11 o'clock.

  183. It's dark.

  184. And we're walking back to the car,

  185. arm in arm,

  186. really at peace and having enjoyed the movie.

  187. And a guy with a knife approaches us.

  188. And I just grab Emma

  189. and I put her in front of me

  190. in between me and the knife.

  191. What would you think of me?

  192. That's the kind of cowardice

  193. we see in Abraham here.

  194. I think it's actually worse

  195. because it wasn't just a momentary instinct.

  196. He came up with a plan.

  197. There's a famine.

  198. God said to stay in this place.

  199. I'm going to bless you.

  200. He goes to Egypt.

  201. That's not a good sign.

  202. And Sarah is so attractive.

  203. He's afraid they're going to kill him

  204. so that they can have her.

  205. That must have been a corrupt place,

  206. like if he's fearing that.

  207. But still,

  208. that fear drives out

  209. all the promises he's just heard.

  210. And in his fear,

  211. he lies.

  212. He pressures Sarah to lie.

  213. Say,

  214. you're my sister.

  215. Sarah,

  216. I'm going to give you up for a time.

  217. Men might use your body.

  218. They might.

  219. It's crazy what he does,

  220. isn't it?

  221. So that I will be safe.

  222. His faith in God

  223. to look after him

  224. failed big time,

  225. putting Sarah in harm's way.

  226. God had promised to make him and Sarah

  227. into this massive family,

  228. and he put it all at risk,

  229. letting Pharaoh take her.

  230. But God intervenes.

  231. He rescues Sarah.

  232. He rebukes Abraham.

  233. Don't miss that.

  234. He rebukes him through Pharaoh.

  235. What is this you have done?

  236. But God protects Abraham's life,

  237. even though Pharaoh must have been

  238. pretty angry.

  239. So he does protect Abraham.

  240. And then Abraham leaves Egypt

  241. more rich than when he arrived,

  242. despite this failure.

  243. Not because of the failure,

  244. but because God kept his promises.

  245. There was no ifs,

  246. buts,

  247. or maybes.

  248. Now,

  249. Abraham,

  250. I reckon,

  251. he could have used,

  252. that went okay,

  253. that further.

  254. He could have used that

  255. as an excuse

  256. to keep on doing

  257. the wrong thing.

  258. But we didn't read this section,

  259. but the thing he does

  260. straight after this

  261. is

  262. he goes back

  263. to the place

  264. where God

  265. had made

  266. his promises to him.

  267. I think it was a

  268. demonstration

  269. of repentance.

  270. repentance.

  271. The riches

  272. he came away with

  273. out of Egypt

  274. weren't the main thing

  275. that was on his mind,

  276. but the rebuke.

  277. He goes back

  278. to the place

  279. where God

  280. had promised him.

  281. So God's promises

  282. to Abraham

  283. were even bigger

  284. than such a massive failure

  285. of his faith.

  286. His promises

  287. were bigger.

  288. I think there's

  289. things that we do

  290. as Christians,

  291. things we say

  292. and do,

  293. they're just

  294. massive failures

  295. of faith.

  296. What does faith

  297. look like

  298. when your faith

  299. massively fails?

  300. If that sentence

  301. makes any sense.

  302. It looks like

  303. believing

  304. that

  305. God's promises

  306. are even bigger.

  307. true faith

  308. doesn't take

  309. God's guarantees

  310. of forgiveness

  311. and just use it

  312. as an excuse

  313. to keep on

  314. doing the wrong thing.

  315. It doesn't try

  316. and blame

  317. I was afraid

  318. so I did the wrong thing.

  319. It doesn't try

  320. and blame things.

  321. It doesn't try

  322. harder to repay.

  323. I think like Abraham

  324. goes back

  325. to the place

  326. where God

  327. has made

  328. those promises

  329. and for us today

  330. that place

  331. is the cross.

  332. We go back

  333. to the cross

  334. and see

  335. that God's

  336. promises

  337. are bigger

  338. than even

  339. my greatest,

  340. greatest failures.

  341. His promises

  342. are bigger.

  343. That kind of faith

  344. when you go back

  345. to the cross

  346. and see

  347. God's promises,

  348. that faith

  349. you'll hear

  350. God's rebuke

  351. even while

  352. you're praising

  353. him for

  354. his rescue.

  355. So that's

  356. what the life

  357. of faith

  358. looks like

  359. when you fail.

  360. What about

  361. when others

  362. fail you?

  363. What about

  364. other people's

  365. failures?

  366. Now we didn't

  367. read chapter 13

  368. for the sake

  369. of time.

  370. I'm going to

  371. give you

  372. like this

  373. 30 second

  374. highlights reel.

  375. Abraham

  376. and his nephew

  377. Lot.

  378. Lot has been

  379. with him

  380. the entire

  381. time.

  382. They're getting

  383. too rich

  384. and that's

  385. the problem

  386. and they need

  387. to separate

  388. and buy

  389. rich.

  390. It's not

  391. bank accounts

  392. like our

  393. days but

  394. it's animals

  395. and people

  396. working under

  397. you to look

  398. after the

  399. animals.

  400. That guaranteed

  401. your future.

  402. They needed

  403. more land

  404. to separate.

  405. Now Abraham

  406. is the head

  407. of the family.

  408. He could

  409. have gone

  410. Lot,

  411. you're my

  412. nephew,

  413. you go

  414. there,

  415. I'm going

  416. to take

  417. the best

  418. for myself

  419. but he

  420. doesn't do

  421. that.

  422. He's

  423. humble.

  424. I think

  425. he's trusting

  426. God and

  427. he gives

  428. his nephew

  429. Lot the

  430. choice.

  431. Lot chooses

  432. the best

  433. for himself

  434. which is

  435. I think

  436. a little

  437. dodgy.

  438. I'm not

  439. sure the

  440. text definitely

  441. says this

  442. but it

  443. seems a bit

  444. dodged.

  445. Lot is rich

  446. because of

  447. Abraham and

  448. then he takes

  449. the best

  450. for himself

  451. but the

  452. worst thing

  453. that the

  454. text really

  455. points to

  456. is that

  457. he compromises

  458. his relationship

  459. with God.

  460. We hear

  461. that Lot

  462. goes and

  463. sets up

  464. camp at

  465. Sodom.

  466. Like Sodom

  467. and Gomorrah,

  468. I don't

  469. know if

  470. you're

  471. visiting today

  472. if you

  473. know about

  474. the Bible,

  475. Sodom is

  476. just the

  477. picture of

  478. not wanting

  479. anything to

  480. do with

  481. God.

  482. Just

  483. absolute

  484. selfishness.

  485. What on

  486. earth is

  487. Lot doing

  488. there?

  489. He's trying

  490. to get

  491. rich.

  492. More

  493. rich.

  494. He's doing

  495. partnership

  496. there.

  497. It's like

  498. someone in

  499. your family

  500. getting the

  501. family inheritance

  502. and then doing

  503. business with

  504. people who are

  505. being investigated

  506. by the

  507. federal police.

  508. They're

  509. suspected of

  510. laundering money

  511. through the

  512. pokies.

  513. They're known

  514. to own

  515. brothels.

  516. You're taking

  517. the family

  518. inheritance and

  519. you're partnering

  520. with these

  521. people.

  522. What are you

  523. doing there,

  524. Lot?

  525. What are you

  526. doing there?

  527. He's not

  528. necessarily said

  529. to be doing

  530. the wrong

  531. thing but

  532. he's partnering

  533. with these

  534. kinds of

  535. people.

  536. What are

  537. you doing?

  538. Now all

  539. that is

  540. background for

  541. chapter 14.

  542. Lot gets

  543. caught up in

  544. a war and

  545. he's captured.

  546. Abraham hears

  547. about it.

  548. Now what

  549. does Abraham

  550. do?

  551. Abraham is

  552. safe.

  553. Lot has

  554. made this

  555. choice to go

  556. to Sodom.

  557. Like,

  558. you deserve

  559. it.

  560. You made

  561. your bed.

  562. Lie in it.

  563. You reap

  564. what you sow.

  565. Abraham could

  566. have, you

  567. deserve it,

  568. Lot, getting

  569. caught up with

  570. these people.

  571. But

  572. incredibly,

  573. Abraham,

  574. God's promises

  575. to Abraham are

  576. even bigger than

  577. whatever disappointment

  578. he feels,

  579. whatever

  580. offence he

  581. feels from

  582. Lot.

  583. they're

  584. bigger even

  585. than the

  586. risk of

  587. the

  588. personal loss

  589. and Abraham

  590. goes after

  591. him.

  592. He pursues

  593. him.

  594. He enters

  595. the war.

  596. He enters

  597. the risk.

  598. He enters

  599. the mess

  600. to rescue

  601. him.

  602. Maybe

  603. fresh in

  604. Abraham's

  605. mind is

  606. that God

  607. had just

  608. rescued him

  609. from his

  610. failure.

  611. Yeah.

  612. Abraham

  613. trusted

  614. God's

  615. promises

  616. and he

  617. pursued

  618. Lot

  619. to rescue

  620. him

  621. despite

  622. his

  623. failure.

  624. I wonder

  625. who has

  626. offended

  627. you?

  628. Who has

  629. acted in

  630. a way

  631. that you

  632. just cannot

  633. respect?

  634. In our

  635. prayer time

  636. a small

  637. group,

  638. one of

  639. the guys

  640. reminded

  641. us that

  642. when

  643. someone's

  644. wronged

  645. us and

  646. really

  647. greatly

  648. failed,

  649. we might

  650. pray as

  651. Christians,

  652. we might

  653. pray for

  654. those who

  655. have been

  656. harmed

  657. through this

  658. person's

  659. actions,

  660. we might

  661. pray for

  662. those who

  663. have been

  664. harmed

  665. because of

  666. this

  667. person,

  668. we might

  669. pray for

  670. things to

  671. be restored,

  672. oh God

  673. please just

  674. put things

  675. right,

  676. we might

  677. pray for

  678. justice to

  679. be done,

  680. but do

  681. we pray for

  682. that person

  683. to be

  684. rescued,

  685. that person

  686. you can't

  687. respect,

  688. do you

  689. pray for

  690. their

  691. rescue?

  692. In the

  693. hope God

  694. rescues

  695. them.

  696. For

  697. Abraham,

  698. he returns

  699. victorious,

  700. God was

  701. with him,

  702. he trusted

  703. God's

  704. promise,

  705. God kept

  706. his promise,

  707. he brings

  708. Lot back,

  709. but not

  710. only Lot

  711. and all

  712. his people

  713. and the

  714. possessions,

  715. he brings

  716. all the

  717. people of

  718. Sodom back

  719. and their

  720. animals and

  721. possessions.

  722. Abraham,

  723. in this

  724. moment,

  725. he has

  726. huge

  727. opportunities

  728. to gain.

  729. He's just

  730. made a

  731. huge risk

  732. and he's

  733. got a

  734. huge reward,

  735. a rightful

  736. reward,

  737. it's his

  738. reward.

  739. God.

  740. And then

  741. we've got

  742. two kings

  743. come out,

  744. we've got

  745. Sodom,

  746. we've already

  747. met Sodom,

  748. and then

  749. Melchizedek.

  750. Let's focus

  751. on Sodom

  752. first.

  753. Sodom

  754. says,

  755. the king

  756. of Sodom,

  757. give me

  758. all the

  759. people,

  760. but you

  761. keep the

  762. goods for

  763. yourself.

  764. So Abraham,

  765. give me my

  766. people back,

  767. you keep the

  768. possessions.

  769. Now he's

  770. not being

  771. generous,

  772. that's just

  773. protocol.

  774. He would

  775. have nothing

  776. if Abraham

  777. didn't bring

  778. all the

  779. people back.

  780. He's not

  781. being generous,

  782. he's giving

  783. Abraham what

  784. he deserves

  785. for his

  786. reward.

  787. And Abraham

  788. says,

  789. no, he

  790. refuses,

  791. he refuses

  792. in a pretty

  793. confrontational

  794. way.

  795. He says,

  796. I'm not going

  797. to take a

  798. shoelace from

  799. you.

  800. He does

  801. the very

  802. opposite of

  803. Lot.

  804. Lot,

  805. wanting to

  806. gain wealth,

  807. went into

  808. partnership,

  809. compromising

  810. his relationship

  811. with God.

  812. Abraham is

  813. willing to

  814. lose great

  815. opportunity to

  816. gain a reward

  817. he's entitled

  818. to, to not

  819. go into

  820. partnership.

  821. relationship.

  822. He doesn't

  823. want to

  824. compromise his

  825. relationship with

  826. God, even

  827. if the gain he

  828. rightly could

  829. get is right

  830. there on the

  831. table.

  832. I'm not having

  833. a shoelace,

  834. no way.

  835. It's the

  836. opposite of

  837. Lot.

  838. It's strange.

  839. He could have

  840. got so much

  841. out of that

  842. situation.

  843. It's

  844. strange

  845. behaviour.

  846. It's

  847. costly.

  848. I talked

  849. to a man

  850. once where

  851. he was

  852. wanting to

  853. know more

  854. about

  855. Christianity

  856. and what

  857. had motivated

  858. him is

  859. the girl

  860. he loved,

  861. a girl who

  862. would express

  863. love for

  864. him,

  865. broke it

  866. off.

  867. because she

  868. basically said

  869. to him,

  870. I love

  871. Jesus more.

  872. He knew

  873. she loved

  874. him.

  875. But he's

  876. just like,

  877. what?

  878. Who is

  879. this Jesus?

  880. Because she

  881. was willing to

  882. break it up.

  883. It was very

  884. costly for

  885. her.

  886. It's

  887. strange.

  888. But you

  889. do that sort

  890. of thing when

  891. you don't want

  892. to lose

  893. God.

  894. And then

  895. Abraham does

  896. a second

  897. costly thing.

  898. Remember,

  899. he deserves

  900. the reward.

  901. He deserves

  902. the reward.

  903. This is

  904. where

  905. Melchizedek

  906. comes in.

  907. And there's

  908. so much in

  909. the Bible

  910. about

  911. Melchizedek

  912. in small

  913. groups.

  914. Do a

  915. deep dive

  916. in that.

  917. I am

  918. going to

  919. glance over

  920. it.

  921. Melchizedek

  922. brings

  923. supplies.

  924. He brings

  925. bread and

  926. wine.

  927. No doubt

  928. the fighting

  929. men are

  930. hungry.

  931. He brings

  932. supplies.

  933. And this

  934. time,

  935. Abraham

  936. gladly partners

  937. with

  938. Melchizedek.

  939. I'm in

  940. your camp.

  941. I'm with

  942. you,

  943. Melchizedek.

  944. Why?

  945. Because they

  946. share the

  947. same faith

  948. in the

  949. Most High

  950. God.

  951. They both

  952. give credit

  953. for Abraham's

  954. victory where

  955. it's due.

  956. Not to

  957. Abraham,

  958. but because

  959. God delivered

  960. your enemies

  961. into your

  962. hand.

  963. God kept

  964. his promise.

  965. They were

  966. both rejoicing

  967. in God's

  968. promises and

  969. God's

  970. character.

  971. Abraham was

  972. rejoicing in

  973. Melchizedek,

  974. giving all the

  975. glory to God,

  976. not him.

  977. And then he

  978. does something

  979. weird.

  980. He gives

  981. Melchizedek

  982. 10% of

  983. all he

  984. has.

  985. He's just

  986. got this

  987. reward.

  988. Melchizedek

  989. brings a

  990. meal.

  991. He's not

  992. paying for

  993. the meal.

  994. 10% is a

  995. high price.

  996. He's not

  997. doing that.

  998. He's not

  999. paying for

  1000. the meal.

  1001. Why?

  1002. Why does

  1003. he give

  1004. 10%?

  1005. If you

  1006. gave 10%

  1007. of everything

  1008. you owned,

  1009. what's he

  1010. doing?

  1011. I think

  1012. it's a

  1013. way of

  1014. completing

  1015. Abraham's

  1016. joy in

  1017. God and

  1018. his promises.

  1019. It's a

  1020. way of

  1021. expressing that

  1022. God

  1023. himself,

  1024. his promises

  1025. are more

  1026. precious than

  1027. the possessions.

  1028. It's

  1029. costly.

  1030. It's

  1031. strange.

  1032. It's

  1033. costly.

  1034. when God's

  1035. promises are

  1036. so precious

  1037. to a person

  1038. that they

  1039. freely give.

  1040. It's

  1041. strange

  1042. behaviour.

  1043. I heard

  1044. of a

  1045. businessman

  1046. who was

  1047. travelling

  1048. internationally.

  1049. He's a

  1050. big shot,

  1051. big name,

  1052. worth millions

  1053. of dollars,

  1054. and he

  1055. gave it

  1056. up to

  1057. spend more

  1058. time with

  1059. his family

  1060. and with

  1061. his local

  1062. church family,

  1063. and part of

  1064. his reasons

  1065. was because

  1066. the youth

  1067. group needed

  1068. more leaders.

  1069. That's

  1070. weird.

  1071. That is

  1072. weird behaviour.

  1073. That is

  1074. weird behaviour.

  1075. When people

  1076. give up their

  1077. Saturday morning

  1078. to willingly,

  1079. dare I say

  1080. joyfully,

  1081. clean the

  1082. church toilets,

  1083. that is

  1084. weird.

  1085. You are

  1086. weird people.

  1087. That's

  1088. strange behaviour,

  1089. people giving

  1090. freely,

  1091. when they

  1092. could be

  1093. gaining for

  1094. themselves.

  1095. It's

  1096. weird when

  1097. people choose

  1098. a house

  1099. that's not

  1100. as good as

  1101. what they

  1102. possibly could

  1103. get so

  1104. that they

  1105. could stay

  1106. close to

  1107. their local

  1108. church.

  1109. It's just

  1110. weird.

  1111. Things,

  1112. people who

  1113. love the

  1114. promises of

  1115. God,

  1116. they do

  1117. costly things,

  1118. but they

  1119. don't do it

  1120. begrudgingly.

  1121. It's weird.

  1122. It's

  1123. strange.

  1124. It shows

  1125. there's

  1126. something bigger

  1127. in their

  1128. life.

  1129. Something is

  1130. more precious

  1131. to them.

  1132. So I

  1133. think in

  1134. Abraham,

  1135. the man of

  1136. faith,

  1137. faith isn't

  1138. just about

  1139. adding this

  1140. little bit of

  1141. religion into

  1142. your life.

  1143. Faith isn't

  1144. trying to

  1145. earn a

  1146. reward in

  1147. the afterlife.

  1148. Christian

  1149. faith is

  1150. when God's

  1151. unconditional

  1152. promises to

  1153. bless you

  1154. are just

  1155. big.

  1156. God's

  1157. promises just

  1158. fill your

  1159. thoughts and

  1160. every nook and

  1161. cranny of your

  1162. life, his

  1163. promises, they're

  1164. just big, they're

  1165. just how you

  1166. see everything.

  1167. like what

  1168. could be a

  1169. better thing to

  1170. build your

  1171. life on than

  1172. the most

  1173. high God who

  1174. possesses heaven

  1175. and earth, who

  1176. cannot lie, saying

  1177. I will bless you

  1178. forever through

  1179. Jesus.

  1180. He's got all the

  1181. control, he

  1182. keeps his

  1183. promises.

  1184. could you

  1185. build your

  1186. life on

  1187. something better

  1188. than that?

  1189. Something

  1190. interesting with

  1191. Abraham is we

  1192. see massive

  1193. failure, right?

  1194. And it's not the

  1195. only one.

  1196. As we keep

  1197. reading Genesis, he

  1198. does something very

  1199. similar and other

  1200. things.

  1201. He fails again.

  1202. But interestingly, you

  1203. keep reading

  1204. scripture and it's

  1205. as if those

  1206. failures are

  1207. washed away.

  1208. What's focused on

  1209. is his faith.

  1210. God focuses on the

  1211. moments of faith.

  1212. How can God do

  1213. that?

  1214. I think because

  1215. Abraham is not

  1216. just the picture

  1217. of faith, he's

  1218. not just the

  1219. pin-up boy of

  1220. faith, he points

  1221. to the one who

  1222. is the answer.

  1223. He's the

  1224. answer to all

  1225. God's promises.

  1226. Jesus Christ, the

  1227. most high God,

  1228. possessor of heaven

  1229. and earth.

  1230. Jesus never uses

  1231. people to save

  1232. his own skin.

  1233. Like Abraham

  1234. used Sarah.

  1235. At the cross of

  1236. Jesus, we see our

  1237. faithful husband laying

  1238. down his life for

  1239. his bride, his

  1240. people.

  1241. His cross is

  1242. bigger than my

  1243. failures.

  1244. Remembering my

  1245. sins no more,

  1246. washed away,

  1247. continually putting

  1248. me back on my

  1249. feet.

  1250. He just remembers

  1251. my faith.

  1252. Wow.

  1253. All because of the

  1254. cross.

  1255. I see myself in

  1256. Lot.

  1257. I don't know who

  1258. you're identifying

  1259. with in this story,

  1260. I identify with

  1261. Lot.

  1262. Getting myself into

  1263. such damaging and

  1264. hopeless situations,

  1265. relationally in all

  1266. sorts of ways,

  1267. because I'm pursuing

  1268. my own interests.

  1269. So foolishly.

  1270. But the cross is

  1271. even bigger because

  1272. it shows Jesus

  1273. didn't just leave me

  1274. to what I

  1275. deserved.

  1276. He pursued me.

  1277. He risked

  1278. everything to

  1279. rescue me and

  1280. bring me back.

  1281. His resurrection

  1282. is bigger than

  1283. any opportunity to

  1284. gain here and

  1285. now.

1286. What good is it if

  1287. someone offers you

  1288. the whole world and

  1289. yet forfeit your

  1290. soul?

  1291. The resurrection

  1292. says that I have

  1293. the most high

  1294. God, the

  1295. possessor of

  1296. heaven and

  1297. earth.

  1298. I belong to

  1299. him and all

  1300. his promises are

  1301. for me,

  1302. unconditional.

  1303. Opportunities to

  1304. gain?

  1305. Can't compare.

  1306. If you know

  1307. who we have,

  1308. you're going to

  1309. do strange

  1310. things.

  1311. You're going to

  1312. do costly

  1313. things, freely,

  1314. gladly, joyfully.

  1315. So in

  1316. Abraham we see

  1317. the man of

  1318. faith and he

  1319. points us to

  1320. Jesus Christ

  1321. where we see

  1322. at the cross

  1323. all the promises

  1324. of God.

  1325. Imagine if God

  1326. said to you,

  1327. I will bless

  1328. you forever.

  1329. That's exactly

  1330. what he said to

  1331. us at the cross.

  1332. No ifs, no

  1333. buts, no

  1334. maybes.

  1335. The life of

  1336. faith is the

  1337. promises at the

  1338. cross being

  1339. big in our

  1340. thinking and in

  1341. our life.

  1342. So know

  1343. then that

  1344. those who are

  1345. of faith are

  1346. blessed along

  1347. with Abraham,

  1348. the man of

  1349. faith.

  1350. And if you

  1351. belong to

  1352. Christ,

  1353. then you are

  1354. Abraham's

  1355. offspring,

  1356. heirs

  1357. according to

  1358. promise.

  1359. Let me pray.

  1360. Let's pray.

  1361. Lord, help us

  1362. believe that you

  1363. are the kind of

  1364. God that wants

  1365. to bless us,

  1366. not based on

  1367. anything we do

  1368. or don't do,

  1369. but purely

  1370. because that's

  1371. the kind of

  1372. God you are.

  1373. Lord, I pray

  1374. that you

  1375. would increasingly

  1376. draw us to

  1377. the beauty of

  1378. yourself seen

  1379. at the cross so

  1380. that your

  1381. promises would

  1382. grow to the

  1383. size that they

  1384. actually are in

  1385. our hearts and

  1386. minds so that we

1387. live in a way that

  1388. pleases you.

  1389. In Jesus' name I

  1390. pray.

  1391. Amen.
