  1. Matthew 6, 19.

  2. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,

  3. where moth and rust destroy,

  4. and where thieves break in and steal.

  5. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

  6. where neither moth nor rust destroys,

  7. and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  8. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  9. The eye is the lamp of the body,

  10. so if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

  11. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

  12. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

  13. No one can serve two masters,

  14. for either he will hate the one and love the other,

  15. or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  16. You cannot serve God and money.

  17. Therefore I tell you,

  18. do not be anxious about your life,

  19. what you will eat or what you will drink,

  20. nor about your body, what you will put on.

  21. Is not life more than food,

  22. and the body more than clothing?

  23. Look at the birds of the air.

  24. They neither sow nor reap,

  25. nor gather into barns,

  26. and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  27. Are you not of more value than they?

  28. And which of you, by being anxious,

  29. can add a single hour to his span of life.

  30. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  31. Consider the lilies of the field,

  32. how they grow.

  33. They neither toil nor spin.

  34. Yet I tell you,

  35. even Solomon in all his glory

  36. was not arrayed like one of these.

  37. But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

  38. which today is alive

  39. and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  40. will he not much more clothe you,

  41. O you of little faith?

  42. Therefore do not be anxious,

  43. saying,

  44. What will we eat,

  45. or what shall we drink,

  46. or what shall we wear?

  47. For the Gentiles seek after all these things,

  48. and your heavenly Father knows

  49. that you need them all.

  50. But seek first the kingdom of God

  51. and his righteousness,

  52. and all these things will be added to you.

  53. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow,

  54. for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

  55. Sufficient for the day

  56. is its own trouble.

  57. Amen.

  58. Well, good morning, everyone.

  59. It's great to see Esther.

  60. You're here somewhere.

  61. Hi, Esther.

  62. Hi, Esther.

  63. There you are.

  64. Great to see you again.

  65. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  66. Let's pray.

  67. Let's pray.

  68. Let's pray.

  69. Father,

  70. I pray that you would help us see yourself

  71. and the world we live in

  72. more and more

  73. in terms of what's actually true.

  74. Help us to discern

  75. the lies of our world that we live in.

  76. So I pray that you would open our eyes

  77. just that bit more today

  78. through your word.

  79. In Jesus' name I pray.

  80. Amen.

  81. Well, if you get a pay rise

  82. or a bonus or you earn a significant profit

  83. on an investment

  84. or you receive a large inheritance

  85. or you somehow win the lottery

  86. even though you didn't buy a ticket,

  87. did you?

  88. Would you see

  89. that windfall

  90. of getting money

  91. as only a good thing?

  92. It's good.

  93. Do you struggle

  94. with greed?

  95. Or is that only a problem

  96. for people who have more than you?

  97. If we assume

  98. that coming into money

  99. is only a good thing,

  100. I'm not sure how you answered

  101. that question in your mind,

  102. but if you're like me

  103. and we kind of assume

  104. that coming into money

  105. is only a good thing

  106. and we ourselves

  107. don't have a problem

  108. with money

  109. except that we would like

  110. a little bit more of it,

  111. something's not adding up.

  112. Excuse the pun.

  113. Don't excuse it

  114. because I said it on purpose,

  115. but because Jesus taught

  116. on money,

  117. Jesus taught on money

  118. more than sex,

  119. heaven and hell combined.

  120. Why?

  121. Like he doesn't need it.

  122. He owns heaven and earth.

  123. What else does scripture say

  124. about

  125. you cannot serve God

  126. and

  127. your boss?

  128. You can't serve God

  129. and

  130. money.

  131. It is easier for a camel

  132. to go through the eye

  133. of a needle

  134. than for a

  135. doubting man

  136. to enter,

  137. a rich man

  138. to enter the kingdom

  139. of heaven.

  140. The love of

  141. is the root

  142. of all kinds

  143. of evil.

  144. Some have wandered

  145. away from the faith.

  146. Judas

  147. preferring

  148. 30 pieces

  149. of silver

  150. and eternal

  151. shame

  152. rather than

  153. eternal life

  154. with Jesus.

  155. It's a big

  156. topic in scripture.

  157. Big.

  158. Today we're

  159. starting a

  160. four week series

  161. on money.

  162. Let me just tell you

  163. where we're headed.

  164. So we're obviously

  165. in Matthew 6

  166. today and

  167. we're going to see

  168. how we're set

  169. free from worry.

  170. Isn't that good news?

  171. Set free from worry.

  172. Next week we're going

  173. to look at

  174. 1 Timothy 6

  175. and we need to

  176. take the warnings

  177. of why

  178. the false promises

  179. of money

  180. really are

  181. the root

  182. of all kinds

  183. of evils.

  184. Not all evils

  185. but all kinds

  186. of evils.

  187. Then we're going

  188. to go to

  189. 2 Corinthians 8

  190. and 9

  191. and we're going

  192. to see how

  193. freedom in Jesus

  194. looks like

  195. cheerful generosity

  196. even when we're

  197. in hardship

  198. ourselves.

  199. And I'm aware

  200. that I'm probably

  201. pretty comfortable

  202. whereas some

  203. people listening

  204. may be choosing

  205. to skip some

  206. meals to pay

  207. rent.

  208. I'm not in that

  209. situation.

  210. but in 2

  211. Corinthians 8

  212. the people

  213. we see

  214. there

  215. there's

  216. something

  217. strangely

  218. cheerful

  219. about them

  220. even in

  221. their hardship.

  222. And then we're

  223. going to go to

  224. Luke 16

  225. and one of the

  226. strangest of

  227. Jesus'

  228. parables

  229. of the

  230. dishonest

  231. manager

  232. but we're

  233. going to see

  234. we're called

  235. to reckless

  236. stewardship.

  237. So that's

  238. where we're

  239. headed in

  240. the series

  241. but I'm

  242. going to be

  243. honest with

  244. you

  245. I don't

  246. enjoy this

  247. topic

  248. as much

  249. as I did

  250. last week

  251. speaking on

  252. Abraham and

  253. the unconditional

  254. promises of

  255. salvation.

  256. there's

  257. something about

  258. this series

  259. I just

  260. don't enjoy

  261. it as

  262. much as

  263. topics like

  264. that.

  265. So why are

  266. we doing

  267. this series?

  268. Obviously I'm

  269. involved in

  270. the decision

  271. making.

  272. We've chosen

  273. this series

  274. as elders.

  275. Why?

  276. And why

  277. now?

  278. Well

  279. what's

  280. prompted

  281. it is

  282. over many

  283. many months

  284. sustained

  285. falling short

  286. of budget.

  287. we're

  288. trying to

  289. analyse

  290. why

  291. and we

  292. realise we

  293. haven't taught

  294. on money

  295. for a very

  296. long time

  297. and that's

  298. strange given

  299. how I've

  300. started this

  301. sermon when

  302. scripture speaks

  303. on money

  304. so much.

  305. It's a

  306. really important

  307. area of

  308. discipleship.

  309. Now

  310. why now?

  311. Well

  312. we're facing

  313. some pretty

  314. big decisions

  315. coming up

  316. as a

  317. congregation

  318. because if

  319. we're looking

  320. to add

  321. more staff

  322. and we're

  323. not meeting

  324. budget

  325. we're going

  326. to have to

  327. make a call

  328. there what

  329. we're going

  330. to do.

  331. Our

  332. facilities

  333. we're

  334. currently

  335. really just

  336. kicking the

  337. maintenance

  338. down the

  339. road for

  340. future

  341. generations.

  342. We're going

  343. to have to

  344. make some

  345. hard calls

  346. soon.

  347. and why

  348. now?

  349. It's

  350. July and

  351. every year

  352. we raise

  353. for our

  354. mission

  355. partners in

  356. August so

  357. this is a

  358. great time

  359. to think

  360. about this

  361. topic.

  362. That's what's

  363. prompted this

  364. series.

  365. But look

  366. whatever

  367. regardless of

  368. the elders

  369. motives

  370. regardless of

  371. how pure

  372. our motives

  373. are you can

  374. be sure of

  375. God's goal

  376. in this

  377. series.

  378. remember

  379. Jesus he

  380. praises the

  381. woman who

  382. gives two

  383. small copper

  384. coins saying

  385. she gave

  386. more than

  387. all the

  388. others who

  389. gave in

  390. their surplus.

  391. He cares

  392. about our

  393. heart.

  394. This series

  395. is about

  396. our heart.

  397. As we go

  398. through this

  399. series I'd

  400. like us to

  401. have a

  402. really broad

  403. definition of

  404. generosity.

  405. Yes that

  406. includes

  407. donations.

  408. It includes

  409. giving to

  410. missionaries as

  411. a church.

  412. But it

  413. might also

  414. include

  415. supporting that

  416. compassion

  417. child, giving

  418. to Fred

  419. Hollows,

  420. cancer

  421. council, I

  422. don't know.

  423. There's so many

  424. ways we can

  425. relieve suffering

  426. in the world.

  427. God's

  428. God's

  429. food.

  430. It's that

  431. spontaneous

  432. eating a

  433. meal with a

  434. homeless person

  435. on the

  436. street.

  437. It's the

  438. cost of

  439. making a

  440. meal for

  441. someone in

  442. the church.

  443. That costs

  444. money.

  445. It costs

  446. money to

  447. drive it to

  448. them.

  449. It costs

  450. your time.

  451. Giving

  452. people lifts

  453. to

  454. appointments to

  455. church, the

  456. cost of

  457. hospitality, people

  458. in your home,

  459. they're using

  460. your electricity.

  461. Do you

  462. charge them

  463. when they

  464. leave?

  465. No.

  466. Generosity is

  467. huge.

  468. Choosing to

  469. forego shifts

  470. at work so

  471. that you can

  472. give your

  473. time to

  474. whatever God

  475. is calling

  476. you to.

  477. Providing

  478. for your

  479. family's needs,

  480. aging parents,

  481. whatever.

  482. I just have

  483. a broad view

  484. of generosity

  485. as we go

  486. through this

  487. series.

  488. Well, in

  489. the Christmas

  490. holidays,

  491. before we

  492. decided to

  493. do this

  494. series, I

  495. read this

  496. book for

  497. myself, for

  498. my own

  499. heart and

  500. mind,

  501. Beyond

  502. Greed.

  503. The author

  504. actually didn't

  505. even like the

  506. title.

  507. The publishers

  508. made him

  509. change it.

  510. He wanted

  511. to say how

  512. to get

  513. really rich.

  514. for some

  515. reason they

  516. wouldn't let

  517. him call it

  518. that.

  519. Now, I

  520. was at

  521. another

  522. Christian

  523. family's

  524. home and

  525. I was

  526. reading their

  527. bookshelf.

  528. I'm like,

  529. what am I

  530. going to

  531. read in

  532. this holiday

  533. period?

  534. What my

  535. thoughts were

  536. fixated on

  537. was whether

  538. we needed to

  539. buy a new

  540. car as a

  541. family because

  542. I was getting

  543. all these

  544. notifications on

  545. my phone of

  546. all these car

  547. crashes in

  548. the holidays.

  549. That was

  550. terrifying me.

  551. Is that

  552. right,

  553. English?

  554. I think it

  555. is.

  556. I was

  557. afraid.

  558. I was

  559. researching,

  560. like, our

  561. car is 10

  562. years old,

  563. has safety

  564. features changed?

  565. And so as I

  566. went through all

  567. the titles on

  568. their bookshelf,

  569. I thought,

  570. well, I want

  571. to know if my

  572. motives are pure

  573. as I'm weighing

  574. up this decision.

  575. Not that my

  576. motives are ever

  577. pure, but

  578. anyway.

  579. So that's why I

  580. read it.

  581. And let me,

  582. here's one

  583. thing Brian

  584. Rosner says.

  585. Imagine the

  586. response of

  587. disbelief in the

  588. local church.

  589. If it were

  590. revealed that the

  591. vast majority of

  592. its members were

  593. secretly worshipping

  594. other gods.

  595. money is right, the

  596. unthinkable may not

  597. be so far from the

  598. truth.

  599. The section in this

  600. book that loosened

  601. my grip on just

  602. the need to

  603. upgrade our car, to

  604. actually just look at

  605. the objective facts

  606. for their own

  607. merits.

  608. The truth that this

  609. book really helped

  610. me in that holiday

  611. period was the

  612. obvious.

  613. I was fearing for

  614. my family's safety.

  615. I was afraid for

  616. my family's

  617. tomorrow.

  618. I wanted

  619. security.

  620. But who do I put

  621. my confidence in for

  622. my family's

  623. tomorrow?

  624. Because if I

  625. trust in what money

  626. can buy for my

  627. family's security,

  628. it's idolatry.

  629. It's an attack on

  630. God's exclusive

  631. rights to our

  632. trust and our

  633. confidence as our

  634. creator and our

  635. sustainer.

  636. Here in Matthew 6,

  637. we're shown where

  638. true security is

  639. found.

  640. Where we can sleep

  641. easy at night.

  642. So let's get into

  643. Matthew 6.

  644. Like the rest of the

  645. Sermon on the Mount,

  646. that's where we are.

  647. We're in the Sermon

  648. on the Mount.

  649. And like the rest of

  650. the sermon, this area

  651. of discipleship, it

  652. exposes our

  653. attitudes and how

  654. desperately we need

  655. Jesus to change

  656. us.

  657. He's already made the

  658. staggering promise at

  659. the start of the

  660. sermon.

  661. Blessed are the

  662. meek.

  663. Not the

  664. economically strong.

  665. Blessed are the

  666. meek, the gentle,

  667. the servant-hearted.

  668. For they shall

  669. inherit the earth.

  670. Like if you believe

  671. that, if you believe

  672. you're inheriting the

  673. earth one day, you

  674. believe you're filthy

  675. rich.

  676. So, church, let's

  677. start thinking about

  678. raising money in

  679. August for our

  680. mission partners.

  681. Let's start putting

  682. aside what can we

  683. give to support our

  684. mission partners.

  685. I suspect, given the

  686. crunch of the cost of

  687. living, if we get

  688. anywhere near previous

  689. totals, that's going

  690. to be a greater

  691. display of giving

  692. this year.

  693. Now, as I issue

  694. that challenge, let's

  695. start thinking about

  696. that.

  697. What comes into your

  698. mind?

  699. What comes into my

  700. mind is, what will my

  701. family live on next

  702. month?

  703. I'm saving for, this

  704. isn't me, this might

  705. be you, I'm saving for a

  706. house deposit.

  707. That's taking money

  708. out of retirement

  709. savings.

  710. I don't have income

  711. coming in.

  712. Even though we want

  713. to support our

  714. missionaries, we care

  715. about that.

  716. Worry and anxiety can

  717. have a vice-like grip

  718. on us.

  719. Because the worries of

  720. tomorrow fill our mind.

  721. If you think Jesus'

  722. main message here is

  723. give more money, give

  724. more away, you've

  725. missed it.

  726. It's not what he's

  727. saying.

  728. Jesus wants to

  729. transform how we look

  730. at the world.

  731. Can I repeat that?

  732. He is not saying

  733. give more away.

  734. He's aiming for

  735. something much deeper.

  736. He wants us to

  737. change how we see

  738. the world.

  739. We see that in

  740. verses 19 to 24, if

  741. you've got your

  742. Bibles open.

  743. He presents a

  744. mutually exclusive

  745. choice.

  746. Here's our choice.

  747. You can either have

  748. treasure on earth or in

  749. heaven.

  750. Your eyes will be

  751. filled with darkness

  752. or light.

  753. You'll be devoted to

  754. money or God.

  755. He sets these

  756. mutually exclusive

  757. choices.

  758. choice.

  759. Quite frankly, I

  760. suspect we think we

  761. can mix those.

  762. I suspect we think

  763. we're quite good at

  764. balancing these two

  765. things.

  766. He's saying you

  767. can't.

  768. You can't serve

  769. both.

  770. It's like you're

  771. trying to, your

  772. operating system is

  773. both Android and

  774. Apple.

  775. You can't.

  776. It can't be both.

  777. Now what is this

  778. mutually exclusive

  779. choice he's

  780. presenting?

  781. What does laying

  782. up treasures in

  783. heaven mean?

  784. Like, don't you

  785. find that a bit

  786. abstract?

  787. What is that?

  788. Laying up

  789. treasures.

  790. Like, I know what a

  791. new car looks like.

  792. What is that?

  793. What are you

  794. offering?

  795. What are you

  796. saying?

  797. And then he's

  798. got this picture of

  799. the eyes, the lamp

  800. of the body.

  801. What's that doing

  802. there?

  803. What's it saying?

  804. Should we just skip

  805. that because it's too

  806. hard?

  807. What is this choice?

  808. I could spend a bunch of

  809. words trying to explain

  810. this choice.

  811. I'm going to choose to

  812. tell, try and

  813. illustrate it.

  814. Tim grew up in

  815. Newcastle.

  816. He went to

  817. Meriwether High.

  818. And soon after

  819. finishing high school,

  820. he started his own

  821. business, a security

  822. software.

  823. software.

  824. And it was going

  825. pretty well.

  826. And he met Lucy at

  827. church.

  828. They've got two young

  829. children.

  830. And at first, Lucy

  831. loved the fact that

  832. Tim's software business

  833. was going gangbusters.

  834. Like, they could

  835. purchase their house

  836. outright.

  837. She loved it.

  838. At first.

  839. Because then she grew

  840. very tired of how much

  841. time Tim was spending

  842. on his business.

  843. He was burning the

  844. candle at both ends.

  845. He was getting to

  846. church every other week

  847. and every other day,

  848. they ate dinner.

  849. The family ate dinner

  850. without Tim with them.

  851. Now, at 38, Tim had

  852. pain in his chest, went

  853. to ED.

  854. Cardiologist warns

  855. him, you've got to

  856. slow down.

  857. And he did.

  858. For a little while.

  859. But then he had this

  860. opportunity to expand

  861. his business overseas.

  862. And Lucy, he's just

  863. telling Lucy, look,

  864. six more months.

  865. We'll expand the

  866. business.

  867. We'll have the rest of

  868. our lives to slow

  869. down.

  870. More time with the

  871. kids.

  872. And then,

  873. again, Lucy goes to

  874. bed on her own and

  875. Tim is downstairs in

  876. the office.

  877. She got up and Tim's

  878. not next to her.

  879. She went downstairs

  880. and finds Tim cold

  881. lying on the floor.

  882. Where your treasure is,

  883. there your heart is

  884. also.

  885. A major promise of

  886. money is safety for

  887. your future.

  888. Tim's

  889. that you can control

  890. your uncontrollable

  891. world.

  892. You can pay for

  893. health care.

  894. You can give your

  895. kids the best

  896. childhood.

  897. You can put away for

  898. a rainy day.

  899. But Tim wasn't in

  900. control.

  901. This false promise

  902. had made him

  903. sacrifice his family,

  904. his health,

  905. his life on the

  906. altar of always

  907. needing more.

  908. His eyes were focused

  909. on what money could

  910. provide for his

  911. future.

  912. That's what his eyes

  913. were locked onto.

  914. Even when Lucy's

  915. begging him,

  916. even though a

  917. cardiologist is telling

  918. him, you've got to

  919. sleep.

  920. His eyes are focused

  921. on that.

  922. Where you set your

  923. eyes is a moral

  924. choice.

  925. Your eyes,

  926. they indicate your

  927. attention, right?

  928. After church, when

  929. you're talking to

  930. someone, you're

  931. having a conversation

  932. and their eyes are

  933. just wandering off.

  934. How do you feel?

  935. Not valued.

  936. Because they indicate

  937. where your attention

  938. is, your goal.

  939. It's a moral choice

  940. where you set your

  941. eyes.

  942. eyes.

  943. The word healthy

  944. in the Greek has a

  945. double meaning.

  946. If your eyes are

  947. healthy, the double

  948. meaning is if they're

  949. singular, if they're

  950. focused on one goal

  951. and they're generous

  952. towards that.

  953. If someone is just,

  954. you're in a conversation

  955. and their eyes are

  956. locked on you, not in a

  957. creepy way, but in a

  958. very active, I'm

  959. listening to you, I'm

  960. generously giving all

  961. of myself to you.

  962. That's the meaning

  963. here.

  964. It's singular focus.

  965. Jesus is saying, if

  966. your eye has a

  967. singular focus on

  968. heavenly treasure,

  969. you're letting light

  970. in.

  971. You're seeing where

  972. you're going.

  973. If not, he's

  974. warning us, you're

  975. blind.

  976. You don't know where

  977. you're going.

  978. There's a cartoon

  979. where an elderly man

  980. is on his deathbed

  981. and he's holding his

  982. elderly wife's hand

  983. and he's staring in

  984. her eyes and the

  985. caption reads, I

  986. wish I accumulated

  987. more stuff.

  988. And no one ever says

  989. that.

  990. No one gets to the

  991. end of their life and

  992. says that.

  993. Which is why whoever

  994. made that cartoon made

  995. it.

  996. And yet how many of

  997. us live with that

  998. goal?

  999. It's darkness.

  1000. It's not seeing life

1001. and reality for what it

  1002. is.

  1003. The false promise of

1004. money has the power to

  1005. waste our entire

  1006. lives.

  1007. Jesus is saying we

  1008. have a mutually

  1009. exclusive choice.

  1010. Will you put your

  1011. confidence in money

  1012. for your security for

  1013. tomorrow?

1014. If you do, it will

  1015. fill you with worry.

  1016. Worry that you can't

  1017. provide three meals on

  1018. the table.

  1019. Worry you can't break

  1020. into the housing market.

  1021. Worry that you can't

  1022. afford mortgage

  1023. repayments.

  1024. Worry that you won't

  1025. have enough for

  1026. retirement.

  1027. There will never be

  1028. enough.

  1029. And that's why, look

  1030. how much time Jesus

  1031. spends on setting us

  1032. free from that.

  1033. Verses 25 to 34.

  1034. He understands us.

  1035. He knows where we

  1036. live.

1037. He sets us free from the

  1038. false promise of

  1039. security that money can

  1040. give us.

  1041. It just can't.

1042. It can't give us security

  1043. for tomorrow.

1044. Now he sets us free not

1045. by laying down a law

  1046. going, be more generous.

1047. He sets us free by going,

1048. look, look, fill your eyes

  1049. with light.

  1050. Look where your real

  1051. security is.

  1052. Look who's really in

  1053. control.

1054. Is not life more than

  1055. food?

1056. And the body more than

  1057. clothing?

1058. Like if we buy into our

  1059. consumerism culture, it

  1060. actually shrinks our view

  1061. of what makes life

  1062. precious.

1063. It shrinks our souls when

  1064. we're made to be

  1065. captivated by greater

  1066. things.

  1067. We're going to share a

1068. meal after church and I'm

  1069. sure you brought wonderful

1070. things to share but quite

  1071. frankly it's a pretty

  1072. simple meal.

1073. But isn't the meal much

  1074. more than the food?

1075. To share it as the people

1076. of God in peace and

  1077. fellowship with God and

  1078. one another, the community,

  1079. the worshipping community,

  1080. doesn't that fill your

  1081. soul?

1082. Jesus, if you focus on

  1083. earthly treasure, it

1084. actually shrinks our idea of

  1085. what's precious in life.

  1086. And then verse 26, a fat

1087. magpie gets another worm from

1088. your garden and what does it

  1089. do?

1090. It says to itself, what

  1091. shall I do?

  1092. I know I'll tear down my

  1093. nest and I'll build a bigger

1094. nest to store all these worms

  1095. for tomorrow.

1096. No, it gobbles it down.

1097. In the next morning, our

  1098. heavenly father gives it

1099. another one to feed its

  1100. young.

1101. Jesus sees this world, he's

1102. just taking for granted that

1103. our father is involved, even

1104. with birds and a worm.

1105. This world is not just

  1106. material ingredients.

  1107. It's not this closed

1108. environment where God is far

  1109. off.

1110. Our creator is in complete

  1111. control.

1112. He is intimately involved, even

  1113. insignificant details like birds

  1114. will never see.

1115. Child of God, aren't you much

1116. more valuable than a magpie in

  1117. your father's eyes?

1118. You are, if you are.

1119. And the glory that fashion claims

1120. to clothe us with, it can't even

1121. compare to flowers, the beauty of

1122. flowers, the same flowers that God

1123. sovereignly gives to those flowers

1124. that we put in the green bin when

  1125. they're done.

1126. Child of God, don't you know that

  1127. you are eternal?

  1128. The day before a wedding I

1129. conducted, my dry cleaners lost my

  1130. suit.

1131. And the worry that flooded me, it

1132. just consumed my attention the rest

1133. of that afternoon and evening when

1134. I should have been focused on the

1135. ceremony and going over the

  1136. sermon again.

1137. I could have trusted as I walked

1138. into my house and saw the gardens,

1139. my front garden, I could have seen

1140. those flowers and just trusted God

1141. will, he knows I need a suit.

1142. He knows I can't turn up in board

  1143. shorts.

1144. I could have accepted the fact that I

  1145. already had one.

1146. It just didn't fit me quite as well.

1147. But instead, I spent hours worrying

  1148. about it.

1149. Oh, you of little faith.

1150. My worry is acting like someone who

1151. doesn't believe in God, as if he's not

1152. sovereign, as if he's not involved, as

1153. if he's not good, as if he's not my

  1154. heavenly father.

1155. Jesus understands how powerful this worry

  1156. for tomorrow is.

1157. If you look at verse 34, he personifies

  1158. tomorrow.

1159. Tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

1160. I've always been troubled, not troubled,

1161. but confused what that means.

1162. But someone helped me this week.

1163. It's saying tomorrow doesn't want to be

  1164. relieved.

1165. It wants to keep worrying.

1166. It is this powerful force that wants you

1167. to keep focusing on tomorrow.

1168. You can throw reason after reason at it.

1169. It doesn't want to be relieved.

  1170. It's powerful.

1171. He knows where we live.

1172. He knows, he's lived in this fallen and

  1173. cursed world.

1174. Like, each day has enough trouble of its

  1175. own.

1176. We shouldn't expect ease and comfort.

  1177. Not yet.

  1178. It's coming.

  1179. Just not yet.

1180. But how do you face those troubles?

1181. You've got the option of, I'm just going to

1182. think about all the possibilities of

1183. tomorrow and it will crush me.

1184. Some possibilities are kind of real.

1185. Others we just, our imagination creates

1186. these worries and it crushes me.

1187. And I look to money to secure, to meet

1188. those needs for tomorrow and I never have

  1189. enough.

1190. Or I can just look at reality and see

1191. everything around me that God is involved,

  1192. he's sovereign, he's good, he's my father.

1193. He's going to give me all I need for today.

1194. Where's my security for tomorrow?

1195. I know he will be there tomorrow.

1196. He will be just as involved tomorrow.

1197. He'll be just as sovereign tomorrow.

1198. He'll be just as good.

1199. He'll still be my father tomorrow.

1200. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.

1201. His mercies never come to an end.

1202. They are new every morning.

1203. We've got to think that way.

  1204. Every morning.

1205. I'm relying on my father today.

1206. I'll wake up tomorrow and I'll ask him for help again.

  1207. Great is your faithfulness.

1208. The Lord is my portion, says my soul.

1209. Therefore, I will hope in him.

1210. Jesus died for our idolatry.

  1211. Remember what idolatry is.

1212. It's something good and putting our faith in a created thing.

1213. Rather than in our creator.

1214. He died to set us free from the fear of tomorrow.

1215. What a gift that is.

1216. He died so that we can know the father is working all his heavenly control.

1217. Having us in his heart.

1218. And he rose again to make our future big and sure.

1219. And our present struggles small.

  1220. Transient.

1221. He says we will inherit the earth.

  1222. Wow.

  1223. I like John Piper's quote.

1224. Knowing all that God promises to be for us in Christ.

1225. Both now and for endless ages to come.

  1226. With ever increasing joy.

1227. Frees us from the compulsion that we must avoid pain.

1228. And maximize comfort in this world.

1229. It frees us from that.

1230. He died to let us.

  1231. To enable us.

1232. To lay up treasures for ourselves.

1233. I love the little detail that.

1234. Don't lay up treasure for yourselves on earth.

1235. Lay up treasure for yourselves.

  1236. In heaven.

1237. He wants us to be greedy for things that last.

1238. Now I think this whole passage only makes sense if you're seeking this heavenly treasure.

  1239. It only makes sense.

1240. If you think God is promising here to maintain your idea of a comfortable lifestyle.

  1241. It just.

  1242. Our experience knows.

  1243. That's not true.

  1244. It only makes sense.

1245. I shudder at the thought of false teachers.

  1246. Who manipulate people.

  1247. And give false promises.

1248. That if you give to God.

1249. He will give you lots of money now.

  1250. Like.

1251. And they're filling their own pockets.

  1252. They're using God.

1253. To get money from people.

  1254. I don't want to be them.

  1255. On the last day.

1256. So what does it mean?

1257. That's not what it means to lay up treasures in heaven.

  1258. What does it mean?

  1259. I think that's answered by verse 33.

  1260. Seek first.

1261. Set your eyes on the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

1262. If that's the treasure you love.

1263. He says your eyes will be filled with light.

1264. We will see our father is involved and provide all we need.

1265. Set your eyes on heavenly treasure.

1266. Get rich on what lasts.

1267. God will take care of what you need.

1268. I want to give an example of what this looks like.

1269. My desire for the gospel to go out to the ends of the earth.

1270. It's in me now because of the gospel.

1271. Because I love the fact Jesus died and he's worthy to be known.

  1272. Isn't he?

1273. That desire is there now.

1274. But to be honest it's weak.

  1275. It's not as...

  1276. It's not as...

1277. That desire in me is not as strong as it should be.

  1278. And it's very inconsistent.

  1279. Here's what I found.

1280. When I give to missionaries I care about.

1281. And I care about the mission field that they're working towards.

  1282. That monetary investment.

1283. It makes me start caring about those missionaries.

1284. When they send a newsletter.

  1285. I'm invested now.

1286. I actually want to read it.

1287. And it motivates me then to pray for them.

1288. In other words, it was the act of giving money that is now motivating me to learn to care about the mission field as God cares about it.

  1289. God's heart for mission.

1290. I'm starting bit by bit to share his heart.

1291. But it's more than that.

1292. And my soul gets satisfied in a very strange way.

1293. Because my concerns don't decrease.

  1294. They get bigger.

1295. I'm now involved in something that's way bigger than my own little world.

1296. And I'm increasingly aware that the missionaries are actually dependent on God.

1297. And the more I'm learning that, the more that feeds my soul in depending on God in my life.

1298. I get more lasting treasure though.

1299. Because I get stronger friendships with these missionaries.

1300. I get stronger friendships across the church.

1301. And then I get more treasure.

1302. Because I know that God, with the very funds he gave me in the first place,

1303. he uses those to get the reward of people.

1304. Everlasting people who are going to stand before that throne on the last day

1305. and they're going to join that chorus who are singing the praises of God's grace.

  1306. And God used me.

1307. In a very small way, he used me.

1308. With the funds he gave me in the first place.

  1309. Treasure after treasure.

1310. Now and when Jesus comes back.

1311. You can set your eyes on that.

1312. Or you could spend that same money buying a little bit bigger TV,

1313. a little bit clearer TV,

1314. that will distract you from the worries of tomorrow.

1315. Which treasure do you want?

1316. Will you pray with me?

  1317. Let's pray.

  1318. Father, thank you for

  1319. knowing us.

1320. That you see the fear that grips us.

1321. And thank you that you don't just come down heavy on our fear,

1322. but you come and meet us and are sufficient for our fear through Jesus.

1323. Knowing now that you are involved and sovereign and good father.

1324. Lord, I pray as a church that you would help us to increasingly see you that way

1325. and see our world that way.

1326. Lord, I pray this so that you would set us free to invest in things that are going to last.

1327. Lord, forgive us for the times we have wasted.

1328. Forgive us more than that for the confidence we place in what we can amass for ourselves.

1329. Thank you for your forgiveness.

1330. Lord, I pray that you would help us see you as our involved father more.

  1331. In Jesus' name.

  1332. Amen.
