  1. Hello everyone, we'll be reading from John chapter 9 today, starting from verse 1 and

    John 9 chapter mention

  2. stopping at verse 14 and then jumping ahead to verse 24.

  3. So if you'd turn with me to John 9.

  4. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth, and his disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned,

  5. this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

  6. Jesus answered, It was not that this man sinned or his parents, but that the works of God

  7. might be displayed in him.

  8. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day.

  9. Night is coming when no one can work.

  10. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

  11. Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva.

  12. Then he anointed the man's eyes with mud and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of

  13. Siloam, which means sent.

  14. So he went and washed and came back seeing.

  15. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, Is this not the man

  16. who used to sit and beg?

  17. Some said, It is he.

  18. Others said, No, but it is like him.

  19. He kept saying, I am the man.

  20. So they said to him, Then how were your eyes opened?

  21. He answered, The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, Go to

  22. Siloam and wash.

  23. So I went and washed and received my sight.

  24. They said to him, Where is he?

  25. He said, I do not know.

  26. They brought him to the Pharisees, the man who had formerly been blind.

  27. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

  28. Moving ahead to verse 24.

  29. So for the second time, they called the man who had been blind and said to him, Give glory

  30. to God.

  31. We know that this man is a sinner.

  32. He answered, Whether he is a sinner, I do not know.

  33. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.

  34. They said to him, What did he do to you?

  35. How did he open your eyes?

  36. He answered them, I have told you already and you would not listen.

  37. Why do you want to hear it again?

  38. Do you also want to become his disciples?

  39. And they reviled him, saying, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

  40. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes

  41. from.

  42. The man answered, Why, this is an amazing thing.

  43. You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.

  44. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does

  45. his will, God listens to him.

  46. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.

  47. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

  48. They answered him, You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?

  49. And they cast him out.

  50. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said, Do you believe in

  51. the Son of Man?

  52. He answered, And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?

  53. Jesus said to him, You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.

  54. He said, Lord, I believe.

  55. And he worshipped him.

  56. Jesus said, For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and

  57. those who see may become blind.

  58. Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, Are we also blind?

  59. Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no guilt.

  60. But now that you say, We see, your guilt remains.

  61. Father, I know that my words have no power, but your words do.

  62. And so I pray that you would fill us all with your spirit, and I pray that your spirit would

  63. help me to be clear and point to Jesus.

  64. And as we just sang, I pray that for each one of us, you would convince our hearts that

  65. your mercy is greater than the darkness.

  66. In Jesus' name I pray.

  67. Amen.

  68. Well, I'm sure you're all equally as excited as I am that the English Premier League has

  69. started again this week.

  70. Now, if anyone tells me the score of Liverpool's game last night, I'm not sure what I'll do.

  71. Like, it's not going to be pretty.

  72. Like, you've seen me cry up front enough.

  73. Like, you don't need to see me cry again.

  74. Don't tell me the score.

  75. Now, a number of years ago, there was some tough things going on in my life, and I'm not

  76. going to go into the details, but what I thought was sure and certain and reliable was now just

  77. confusing, uncertain.

  78. I knew it was a difficult time, but I didn't realise how much it was affecting me until one

  79. night, playing soccer with friends.

  80. We were at Spears Point Park with the synthetic, like, it was perfect, it was a clear night,

  81. stars were out, with friends, playing soccer.

  82. Like, this is my lovely time, my idea of a lovely time.

  83. It's probably not yours.

  84. Now, the ball went out for a goal kick, so I had this moment of pause, just staring at

  85. the stars, and just this wave of sadness came over me.

  86. It was just in that moment I was like, oh, oh, this is really affecting me.

  87. A few days later, I went to Warners Bay by the foreshore, coffee in hand.

  88. I'm not really knowing what I was searching for, but I started reading John's Gospel.

  89. I just started reading.

  90. Now, I did not come away with this aha moment.

  91. This is the key to unlock my problems.

  92. Here's what I need to do.

  93. I did not come away with that.

  94. I was still sad.

  95. But it's really hard to put into words the strength, the peace that came, just seeing Jesus afresh.

  96. It was the person of Jesus.

  97. There was something steadying about that.

  98. Whatever else was chaos, I know him, and he knows me.

  99. We come this morning to the second I am claim of Jesus.

  100. Last week, we saw him feeding the 5,000, claiming that he can feed our spiritual hunger.

  101. I am the bread of life.

  102. And now he's saying that he's the solution to our spiritual blindness.

  103. I am the light of the world.

  104. So as we come into this story, I think a way to see what's going on in this story is just listen out for what people claim that they know.

  105. They know for sure.

  106. Okay, so Jesus comes across this man who's been blind from birth.

  107. We don't know how old he is.

  108. We know he could be in his 40s or older.

  109. He's an adult.

  110. He can testify in court for himself.

  111. Jesus makes mud with his saliva.

  112. It's strange.

  113. Puts it on his eyes and sent him to a pool called, which the name means sent.

  114. Now, I think the name is significant because it becomes the heart of the question that they're going to be debating.

  115. Is Jesus sent from God?

  116. Now, his neighbors, they had walked past this beggar.

  117. He's a blind man.

  118. He can't work.

  119. So he's been begging.

  120. They walk past him every day, all his life.

  121. They know him the best.

  122. And they're divided.

  123. It's him.

  124. It just looks like him.

  125. Like, how is this possible?

  126. They're divided.

  127. And so they take him to the experts, the religious experts of the day.

  128. Now, please don't be thinking that these ancient people were primitive in their understanding,

  129. thinking that mud and saliva and washing could cure blindness.

  130. We do eye surgery today.

  131. The man, the neighbors, the religious experts, they're not focusing on that.

  132. They're focusing on the person, Jesus.

  133. But the experts who know their Bibles well, they're suspicious.

  134. Well, most of them are.

  135. There seems to be a minority group who are amazed.

  136. But most of them are thinking, something fishy is going on here.

  137. They call in the parents.

  138. We didn't read this bit, but they call in the parents.

  139. They don't believe he was blind from birth.

  140. But the parents come in and they say, yes, this is our son.

  141. Yes, he was blind from birth.

  142. But they sense the danger.

  143. And they're like, we don't know what's going on here.

  144. Talk to him.

  145. Because they knew that the experts had already decided, if you follow Jesus, you're excommunicated.

  146. Leave.

  147. Cut off from the community, which is a big deal.

  148. You're treated as if you were cut off from God.

  149. So let's take stock of what the experts know.

  150. They've got the testimony of the man.

  151. I was blind and now I see.

  152. They've got the testimony of the neighbours who knew him best.

  153. They've got the testimony of his parents.

  154. This is our son.

  155. He was born blind.

  156. Now, according to the law of Moses, these experts had plenty of evidence to establish this matter.

  157. But here's their conclusion.

  158. We know this man, Jesus, is a sinner.

  159. That's their conclusion.

  160. We know.

  161. He can't be sent from God.

  162. Now, why are they so sure?

  163. Not because of what he did, but when he did it.

  164. He did it on the Sabbath rest.

  165. Now, rabbinical teaching was that only God can work on the Sabbath.

  166. Like the sun still needs to rise on the Sabbath day.

  167. God is always working, bringing light and life to his world.

  168. But his people need to rest on the Sabbath to remember that their life is from God.

  169. That they were delivered by Moses from Egypt to be God's worshipping people.

  170. God can work on the Sabbath to give life.

  171. Everyone else must rest.

  172. Jesus healed.

  173. He did this work on the Sabbath.

  174. Now, we've skipped a lot in John's Gospel.

  175. This is the second time Jesus has done this.

  176. He healed a man who couldn't walk for 38 years on the Sabbath.

  177. And they questioned him about that.

  178. And here's how he justifies himself in chapter 5, 17 and 18.

  179. My father is working until now.

  180. And I am working.

  181. Let's just say that made matters worse.

  182. Because John goes on to explain,

  183. This is why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him.

  184. Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  185. but he was even calling God his own father.

  186. Making himself equal with God.

  187. He's claiming to be greater than Moses.

  188. He's claiming that he can work.

  189. Bringing light and life to the world.

  190. He must be a sinner.

  191. Now,

  192. these experts,

  193. they get in this irrational tangle.

  194. Think about what they're doing.

  195. They're accepting that the miracle happened

  196. in order to conclude

  197. he worked on the Sabbath.

  198. This miracle happened

  199. and so he broke the Sabbath.

  200. They're conceding it happened.

  201. And they're just ignoring the obvious question.

  202. If Jesus can do this,

  203. what does this mean about where he came from?

  204. Look at the irony here.

  205. These experts,

  206. the emphasis in this passage is,

  207. we know.

  208. We.

  209. We're the experts.

  210. We know.

  211. We see clearly.

  212. Follow us.

  213. Blind man,

  214. give glory.

  215. Well, he's not blind anymore.

  216. He's seeing.

  217. Give glory to God.

  218. Tell the truth.

  219. Follow our lead.

  220. They're trying to pressure this guy

  221. who has been blind his entire life

  222. into denying the fact

  223. that this man Jesus came along

  224. and he saw light

  225. for the first time.

  226. They're trying to pressure him

  227. into denying that.

  228. It's good luck.

  229. Good luck convincing him of that.

  230. It's just irrational.

  231. The healed man,

  232. he starts with what he can't deny.

  233. Whether he's a sinner or not,

  234. I don't know.

  235. One thing I do know.

  236. That though I was blind,

  237. now I see.

  238. His sight seems to grow.

  239. Verse 11,

  240. this man called Jesus opens my eyes.

  241. Verse 17,

  242. he's a prophet.

  243. A messenger from God.

  244. Verse 27,

  245. he implies,

  246. I'm following this Jesus now.

  247. And then he reasons from Moses,

  248. from the prophets,

  249. he reasons,

  250. God only listens to those who worship him.

  251. And no one's ever heard

  252. of a man being born blind.

  253. Seeing.

  254. This has never happened

  255. since the world began.

  256. Jesus could not possibly

  257. have done a thing

  258. if he wasn't sent from God.

  259. He's saying,

  260. there is a greater marvel,

  261. in a sense,

  262. there's a greater marvel

  263. than that I can see now.

  264. It's the marvel

  265. that you experts

  266. can't see where he comes from.

  267. Now,

  268. for some reason,

  269. they don't like this.

  270. The experts,

  271. to use a soccer phrase,

  272. they play the man,

  273. not the ball.

  274. You're the one born in sin.

  275. How dare you lecture us?

  276. This is a strange scene.

  277. Picture it.

  278. This is a beggar.

  279. I doubt he even owned nice clothes.

  280. And he's standing on his own.

  281. His parents,

  282. not even his parents,

  283. are supporting him.

  284. He's on his own.

  285. He's uneducated.

  286. And he's surrounded

  287. by this learned group

  288. who have all the power in society.

  289. They can excommunicate,

  290. cut people off from...

  291. And it's the experts

  292. who are reacting so strongly.

  293. They're so threatened.

  294. I think it's their emphasis

  295. on themselves

  296. that show what's really going on.

  297. We know.

  298. How dare you lecture us?

  299. Here's what's really going on.

  300. They can't let go of the idea

  301. that they can already see clearly.

  302. They hate the idea

  303. that they might be blind

  304. so much

  305. that when they see

  306. this amazing victory

  307. of light over darkness

  308. in healing this man,

  309. they ignore it.

  310. and they ignore

  311. what Jesus is doing.

  312. That Jesus is giving

  313. what the Sabbath rest was about.

  314. Sabbath rest

  315. was to remember

  316. God created all things,

  317. including humankind,

  318. which Genesis 2, 7 says,

  319. from the dust of the ground,

  320. God formed man.

  321. Maybe,

  322. maybe,

  323. him making the mud

  324. was just a little signal

  325. that he is the creator.

  326. Either way,

  327. what he did,

  328. it's unheard of.

  329. It's an act of creation,

  330. giving sight to a blind man.

  331. And Isaiah the prophet

  332. says this is exactly

  333. what the Messiah would do

  334. in chapter 42.

  335. Thus says God,

  336. the Lord,

  337. who created the heavens

  338. and stretched them out,

  339. who spread out the earth

  340. and what comes from it,

  341. who gives breath

  342. to the people on it

  343. and spirit to those

  344. who walk in it.

  345. I will give you

  346. as a covenant

  347. for the people,

  348. a light for the nations,

  349. to open the eyes

  350. that are blind,

  351. to bring out the prisoners

  352. from the dungeon,

  353. from the prison,

  354. those who sit in darkness.

  355. Much more than physical sight,

  356. this man receives

  357. spiritual sight.

  358. He believed Jesus

  359. came from God

  360. and now he takes

  361. one step

  362. more

  363. and he gives

  364. Jesus

  365. the reverence

  366. that's only

  367. appropriate to God.

  368. He bows down

  369. and he worships

  370. this human being.

  371. He

  372. was once sure

  373. that God

  374. was punishing him

  375. because of his sin

  376. or his parents' sin,

  377. someone's sin.

  378. He was once sure

  379. God was against him

  380. and now

  381. in Jesus

  382. he's known,

  383. he's seen.

  384. He can see the grace

  385. and mercy of God.

  386. He can't,

  387. to use Caroline's phrase,

  388. he can't unsee Jesus now.

  389. Now I doubt

  390. he couldn't have known

  391. what it would have

  392. cost Jesus

  393. to do this

  394. because we later

  395. find out in John's Gospel

  396. that night

  397. was coming.

  398. Jesus had to trade

  399. places with the man.

  400. Those claiming to see

  401. would decide

  402. to snuff out

  403. this light

  404. but Jesus

  405. chose

  406. to trade

  407. places

  408. with this man.

  409. He let the

  410. darkness

  411. have him.

  412. So

  413. John's clever,

  414. isn't he,

  415. writing this?

  416. You see what he's doing,

  417. don't you?

  418. He's letting us

  419. listen in

  420. on these people

  421. forming their conclusions

  422. about Jesus.

  423. Where is he from?

  424. Because it makes us

  425. reading it today

  426. ask ourselves,

  427. who do I agree with?

  428. Do I more agree

  429. with those

  430. who are so sure

  431. that they can already

  432. see clearly?

  433. They know what God's about,

  434. they know what the world's about,

  435. they know what my life

  436. is about.

  437. I've already got light,

  438. I can see.

  439. Or,

  440. do I despair

  441. of my ability

  442. to know God,

  443. my ability

  444. to know my purpose,

  445. my ability

  446. to know what

  447. life is about?

  448. Am I willing

  449. to say

  450. I'm as blind

  451. spiritually

  452. as this man

  453. was?

  454. Shifting sport

  455. illustrations,

  456. sorry for all

  457. the sport

  458. illustrations today

  459. for those

  460. who hate sport,

  461. but anyone

  462. know who Tom

  463. Brady is?

  464. Okay,

  465. there's a few

  466. nods,

  467. a few hands.

  468. NFL,

  469. American football,

  470. quarterback,

  471. now think

  472. of the Super Bowl,

  473. how many people

  474. watch the Super Bowl?

  475. It's over a billion,

  476. isn't it?

  477. You watch this

  478. grand final

  479. of this sport

  480. every year.

  481. Now he's played

  482. in 10 Super Bowls,

  483. this guy.

  484. He's won seven.

  485. He was most valuable

  486. player for five

  487. of them.

  488. The country

  489. worships him.

  490. He's got a stadium

  491. of worshippers

  492. chanting his name.

  493. Now he had a

  494. TV interview

  495. in 2005,

  496. he'd only won

  497. three Super Bowls

  498. at that point,

  499. and he said

  500. in the interview,

  501. why do I have

  502. three Super Bowl

  503. rings

  504. and still think

  505. there's something

  506. greater out there

  507. for me?

  508. I reach my goal,

  509. my dream,

  510. my life,

  511. and I think,

  512. God,

  513. it's got to be

  514. more than this.

  515. This can't be

  516. what it's all

  517. cracked up to be.

  518. This guy's

  519. a good looking

  520. guy.

  521. He's much

  522. more handsome

  523. than me.

  524. He's got

  525. everything going

  526. for him.

  527. I've never been

  528. asked for a TV

  529. interview.

  530. Now the

  531. interviewer asks

  532. him,

  533. what's the

  534. answer?

  535. I wish I

  536. knew.

  537. I wish I

  538. knew.

  539. how can

  540. someone at

  541. the top

  542. think there's

  543. got to be

  544. more?

  545. I've reached

  546. my goal.

  547. Can you

  548. hear how

  549. lost he

  550. is?

  551. Whatever

  552. you make

  553. your goal

  554. in life,

  555. your purpose,

  556. your worth,

  557. it leaves

  558. you lost

  559. and empty

  560. and fearful.

  561. Now there's

  562. a danger.

  563. You might

  564. be hearing

  565. me say,

  566. those in

  567. church can

  568. see.

  569. We know

  570. what life

  571. is about.

  572. Those

  573. outside living

  574. for the

  575. world,

  576. they don't

  577. know.

  578. This passage

  579. is saying

  580. something much

  581. worse than

  582. that.

  583. It's saying

  584. we're all

  585. born blind

  586. to God

  587. and what

  588. life is

  589. about.

  590. All of

  591. us.

  592. all of

  593. us are

  594. spiritually

  595. in

  596. darkness

  597. thinking

  598. we know.

  599. People can

  600. come to

  601. church their

  602. whole lives

  603. every week

  604. and the

  605. preacher,

  606. the songs,

  607. the conversations

  608. are saying

  609. life is a

  610. gift,

  611. life is a

  612. gift in

  613. Jesus,

  614. life is a

  615. gift and

  616. they walk

  617. out the

  618. door going

  619. I've got to

  620. try harder,

  621. I've got to

  622. try harder,

  623. I've got to

  624. try harder.

  625. you can

  626. totally miss

  627. it your

  628. whole life.

  629. On the

  630. flip side,

  631. someone can

  632. be so

  633. content in

  634. what they're

  635. living for

  636. other than

  637. Jesus and

  638. then they

  639. can find

  640. Jesus'

  641. light just

  642. irresistible

  643. even when

  644. they don't

  645. want him

  646. to be.

  647. So here's

  648. Rosaria's

  649. story.

  650. As a

  651. university

  652. professor,

  653. as a

  654. professor,

  655. doing pretty

  656. well for

  657. herself,

  658. I tired of

  659. students who

  660. seemed to

  661. believe that

  662. knowing Jesus

  663. meant knowing

  664. little else.

  665. Stupid,

  666. pointless,

  667. menacing.

  668. That's what I

  669. thought of

  670. Christians and

  671. their God,

  672. Jesus.

  673. The Christians

  674. who mocked

  675. me on

  676. Gay Pride

  677. Day were

  678. happy that

  679. I and

  680. everyone I

  681. loved were

  682. going to

  683. hell,

  684. was clear

  685. as blue

  686. sky.

  687. But that

  688. is not

  689. what Ken

  690. did.

  691. He did

  692. not mock,

  693. he engaged.

  694. So when

  695. his letter

  696. invited me to

  697. get together

  698. for dinner,

  699. I accepted.

  700. Ken and

  701. his wife,

  702. Floyd,

  703. and I

  704. became friends.

  705. they entered

  706. my world

  707. and they

  708. met my

  709. friends.

  710. We did

  711. book exchanges,

  712. we talked

  713. openly about

  714. sexuality and

  715. politics.

  716. They did

  717. not act as

  718. if such

  719. conversations

  720. were polluting

  721. them.

  722. And when

  723. we ate

  724. together,

  725. Ken prayed

  726. in a way

  727. I'd never

  728. heard before.

  729. His prayers

  730. were intimate,

  731. vulnerable.

  732. He repented

  733. of his sin

  734. in front of

  735. me.

  736. He thanked

  737. God for

  738. all things.

  739. Ken's God

  740. was holy

  741. and firm,

  742. yet full of

  743. mercy.

  744. I started

  745. reading the

  746. Bible.

  747. I read

  748. the way

  749. a glutton

  750. devours.

  751. I continued

  752. reading the

  753. Bible,

  754. all the while

  755. fighting the

  756. idea that it

  757. was inspired.

  758. But the

  759. Bible got to

  760. be bigger

  761. inside me

  762. than I.

  763. It overflowed

  764. into my

  765. world.

  766. I fought

  767. against it

  768. with all

  769. my might.

  770. And then

  771. one Sunday

  772. morning I

  773. rose from

  774. the bed

  775. of my

  776. lesbian

  777. lover and

  778. an hour

  779. later,

  780. sat in

  781. a pure

  782. church.

  783. I fought

  784. with everything

  785. I had.

  786. I did

  787. not want

  788. this.

  789. I did

  790. not ask

  791. for this.

  792. I counted

  793. the costs

  794. and I did

  795. not like

  796. the math

  797. on the

  798. other side

  799. of the

  800. equal sign.

  801. But God's

  802. promises

  803. rolled in

  804. like sets

  805. of waves

  806. into my

  807. world.

  808. And then

  809. one ordinary

  810. day I

  811. came to

  812. Jesus,

  813. open-handed

  814. and naked.

  815. Jesus

  816. triumphed.

  817. I am

  818. the light

  819. of the

  820. world.

  821. Whoever

  822. follows me

  823. will not

  824. walk in

  825. darkness but

  826. will have

  827. the light

  828. of life.

  829. Please

  830. will you

  831. pray with

  832. me?

  833. Father, I

  834. pray that

  835. you would

  836. help us

  837. to admit

  838. that we

  839. don't know

  840. where we're

  841. going.

  842. that even

  843. as a

  844. society

  845. we're

  846. pretty

  847. lost.

  848. We don't

  849. know

  850. what life

  851. is about.

  852. And I

  853. pray that

  854. Lord Jesus

  855. you would

  856. make yourself

  857. irresistible

  858. to each

  859. one of

  860. us.

  861. Help us

  862. set our

  863. eyes on

  864. you.

  865. And I

  866. pray this

  867. in Jesus

  868. name.

  869. Amen.

  870. Amen.

  871. Amen.

  872. Amen.

  873. Amen.

  874. Amen.

  875. Amen.

  876. Amen.
