  1. Oh, hello.

  2. Hello.

  3. I'm reading from John chapter 14, verse 1 to 14.

    John 14:1–14

  4. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  5. Believe in God, believe also in me.

  6. In my Father's house are many rooms.

  7. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  8. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself,

  9. that where I am you may be also.

  10. And you know the way to where I'm going.

  11. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going.

  12. How can we know the way?

  13. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life.

  14. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  15. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.

  16. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

  17. Philip said to him, Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us.

  18. Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip?

  19. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  20. How can you say, show us the Father?

  21. Do you not believe that I am the Father and the Father is in me?

  22. I am in the Father and the Father is in me.

  23. The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority,

  24. but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

  25. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,

  26. or else believe on account of the works themselves.

  27. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do.

  28. And greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

  29. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do,

  30. that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  31. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

  32. Well, good morning, everyone.

  33. Well, will you please pray with me as we come to God's Word.

  34. Father, this is always the case,

  35. but there are just amazing truths in your Word for us this morning.

  36. And my prayer is that each of us would hear them as coming from your mouth

  37. and not from mine.

  38. So I pray that you would fill us with your Spirit and your Word.

  39. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

  40. Well, I was listening to a Jordan Peterson podcast.

  41. If you don't know who he is, that's fine.

  42. I found this interaction on this podcast really fascinating.

  43. So he had a guest on named Alex.

  44. Now, Alex isn't a believer, but he was pressing Jordan to explain his beliefs,

  45. because this guy, he's giving lectures on the Bible.

  46. He quotes the Bible left, right and centre.

  47. And then Alex is saying,

  48. If I went back in time with a Panasonic video camera,

  49. I'm sure there's other brands out there just for legal sake,

  50. Panasonic video camera and put that camera in front of the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea,

  51. would the little LCD screen show a man walk out of that tomb?

  52. And Jordan replies,

  53. I would suspect yes.

  54. Alex says,

  55. So that, to me, seems like a belief in the historical event of the resurrection,

  56. or at least of Jesus leaving the tomb,

  57. which means that when somebody says,

  58. Do you believe that Jesus rose from the dead?

  59. It doesn't seem clear to me why you're not able to say,

  60. It would seem to me yes.

  61. And Jordan replies,

  62. Because I have no idea what that means.

  63. And neither did the people who saw him.

  64. Wow.

  65. We've been going through the I Am declarations of Jesus for five weeks now.

  66. And today, we have a passage that answers Jordan's question about,

  67. What does it all mean?

  68. Jordan's claim that the people who first saw him had no idea.

  69. Maybe that is initially true,

  70. but John tells us why he wrote this down.

  71. He says in chapter 20,

  72. Now Jesus did many other signs, miracles,

  73. in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book,

  74. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  75. the Son of God,

  76. and that by believing,

  77. you may have life in his name.

  78. That's what it means.

  79. Now, for all of you, my brothers and sisters,

  80. who know what all this means,

  81. can we just take a moment to remind ourselves of what John 14,

  82. the original situation that the disciples were facing.

  83. John 14 is, you've probably heard it at many funerals,

  84. and it's a great passage for funerals.

  85. But the first purpose of this are to disciples whose faith,

  86. it is on the brink of failure.

  87. They are battered.

  88. Their expectations of success, seriously unmet.

  89. One of their own would betray.

  90. Their leader, Peter, is going to publicly deny the faith.

  91. If he can't make it through the night,

  92. what about the others?

  93. They feel abandoned to their own resources.

  94. They're battled in their faith.

  95. So the original setting is these words to us.

  96. This is what Jesus says, his purpose for his words.

  97. I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace.

  98. In the world you have tribulation,

  99. but take heart, I have overcome the world.

  100. So this passage shows us what it all means.

  101. And if we know what it means,

  102. that just clicked, that the rooster crowing is...

  103. That's really fitting for Peter's denial, isn't it?

  104. I did not set that up.

  105. Thank you, whoever did that.

  106. This is an audio-visual experience.

  107. I was wondering why you were all laughing.

  108. I wasn't getting the joke.

  109. Whatever is battering your faith...

  110. I think our faith is constantly battered.

  111. I don't think it's just certain seasons in life.

  112. I think it's a miracle that any of us make it to the end.

  113. All of us are battered by different things.

  114. Either being seduced away,

  115. Jesus just becomes smaller than he actually is,

  116. or a direct challenge,

  117. or is it for me?

  118. They're great truths.

  119. We're constantly battered.

  120. We see three things in this passage

  121. that give us such peace in him.

  122. There's a place for you in the Father's house.

  123. You know the way.

  124. From now on, you know the Father.

  125. And in that peace,

  126. he's calling us to great works

  127. in sharing that peace

  128. until we get to see him.

  129. So let's just go through this passage.

  130. We saw last week in the resurrection of Lazarus

  131. a sneak preview of the end of the age

  132. when everyone who are buried

  133. are going to hear the voice of the Son of God

  134. and come out of their graves.

  135. Some to everlasting life.

  136. Some to everlasting judgment.

  137. Now the goal of Jesus' mission,

  138. what it all means,

  139. is to prepare a place in our Father's house.

  140. It's a picture of that heaven.

  141. There's many rooms.

  142. I don't think we're meant to be picturing the rooms.

  143. However you want to decorate them.

  144. The nature of the rooms isn't what's talked about.

  145. There's so much space, is his point.

  146. There's heaps of space.

  147. There's plenty of room.

  148. And there is a place.

  149. I'm looking around this auditorium

  150. and we love place.

  151. I can almost know who's here this morning

  152. by looking at certain parts of seats.

  153. We love place.

  154. We are embodied creatures.

  155. We want to worship God embodied

  156. in a place.

  157. And that is what Jesus came to give us.

  158. This eternal, permanent place.

  159. It is an embodied home.

  160. It's a place for you personally.

  161. He's expecting you.

  162. People won't turn their eyes away from you

  163. when you get in.

  164. It's just like,

  165. I don't know how he made it.

  166. They're just going to tolerate that.

  167. They're going to see you.

  168. The Father's expecting you

  169. to see you at the core of your being

  170. and delight in you.

  171. You're expected.

  172. Your name's there.

  173. It's a place for you.

  174. He's going to prepare.

  175. There's a sense in which

  176. Jesus refuses to start

  177. the bliss of heaven

  178. until all his people are with him.

  179. I'm pretty sure I've quoted

  180. C.S. Lewis recently.

  181. I can't remember.

  182. I'm going to quote it again

  183. because it's a great quote.

  184. Creatures are not born with desires

  185. unless satisfaction for those desires exists.

  186. A baby feels hunger?

  187. Well, there is such a thing as food.

  188. A duckling wants to swim.

  189. Well, there is such a thing as water.

  190. If I find in myself a desire

  191. which no experience in this world can satisfy,

  192. the most probable explanation

  193. is that I was made for another world.

  194. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it,

  195. that does not prove that the universe is a fraud.

  196. Probably earthly pleasures

  197. were never meant to satisfy it.

  198. But only to arouse it.

  199. To suggest the real thing.

  200. I think this morning

  201. you can know you have a place there

  202. if your desires move

  203. from the concept of place

  204. to person.

  205. verse 3,

  206. I will come again

  207. and I will take you to myself.

  208. That where I am

  209. you may be also.

  210. If that,

  211. I know that grows over time as a Christian,

  212. but if your concept of heaven moves

  213. from place to person,

  214. I think that's one indicator that

  215. you know him.

  216. You have a place.

  217. So we have peace,

  218. have peace in me

  219. because there's a place for you

  220. in my father's house

  221. and second,

  222. because you know the way.

  223. You know it.

  224. Now, Thomas doesn't seem to know,

  225. but they do know

  226. because they know him.

  227. Now,

  228. this is where we've got to take,

  229. pay close attention

  230. to the article.

  231. He's not saying,

  232. I am a,

  233. a way among many

  234. to God.

  235. I am the

  236. way,

  237. the truth,

  238. the life.

  239. No one

  240. comes

  241. to the Father

  242. except through

  243. me.

  244. Jesus is the only way

  245. to the Father

  246. precisely because of

  247. who he is.

  248. He is the truth

  249. of God

  250. and the life

  251. of God

  252. is in himself.

  253. Because of who he is,

  254. it makes him

  255. the only way.

  256. Now,

  257. I think we're all,

  258. the idea of absolute,

  259. the truth,

  260. it might,

  261. it might feel yucky

  262. to you,

  263. I'm not sure,

  264. but I think we're all

  265. intolerant

  266. when truth is staring

  267. us in the face,

  268. when there's just

  269. reality there,

  270. you just,

  271. you've got to deal

  272. with it.

  273. An example of this,

  274. I think it was this week,

  275. the guys who are laying

  276. the floor tiles,

  277. these squares,

  278. they were telling me

  279. that they get to the end

  280. and then there's this

  281. five millimetre gap.

  282. That reality of a gap,

  283. it shouldn't be there

  284. and it's just staring

  285. them in the face,

  286. it means one of the tiles

  287. somewhere that look

  288. identical

  289. is mismanufactured.

  290. Now,

  291. that reality,

  292. they could have gone,

  293. well,

  294. they looked,

  295. they looked right,

  296. they look square,

  297. but no,

  298. the gap was,

  299. it's reality that,

  300. they spent ages finding

  301. that one square

  302. that was out of alignment.

  303. They were intolerant

  304. to their credit

  305. and they didn't just

  306. put up with it.

  307. When reality's there,

  308. even if you don't like it,

  309. I'll give you another

  310. illustration in case

  311. that didn't work for you.

  312. If you go to the doctor

  313. and you describe your symptoms

  314. and the doctor knows

  315. what you've got,

  316. they've seen it

  317. hundreds of times,

  318. all the research papers

  319. say the same thing,

  320. no one disagrees

  321. and the prognosis

  322. is not good.

  323. If that doctor

  324. told you a lie

  325. because they didn't

  326. want to upset you,

  327. how would you feel

  328. about that?

  329. Would you tolerate that?

  330. I'd be pretty furious.

  331. Even when reality,

  332. we don't like it.

  333. It's not helpful

  334. or kind

  335. to be flexible

  336. with truth.

  337. How much more

  338. with ultimate truth,

  339. ultimate reality?

  340. I think we're all

  341. searching for ultimate reality.

  342. I want to go back

  343. to that podcast

  344. I mentioned.

  345. Alex,

  346. remember,

  347. he's an unbeliever.

  348. He raises

  349. a really

  350. critical challenge

  351. to our society's

  352. belief system

  353. based on the truth

  354. of evolution.

  355. Here's what Alex

  356. says.

  357. he's describing

  358. someone else's argument

  359. but here's what he says.

  360. What does natural

  361. selection select

  362. for?

  363. Survivability.

  364. So if you're

  365. a materialist,

  366. there's no such

  367. thing as God,

  368. that means

  369. that the very

  370. rational faculty

  371. that you're using

  372. right now

  373. evolves

  374. not to be sensitive

  375. to truth

  376. but to survivability.

  377. And if that's

  378. the case,

  379. why do you

  380. believe in the

  381. truth

  382. of evolution?

  383. This unbeliever

  384. is putting it forward

  385. as going,

  386. he doesn't answer

  387. the question.

  388. We're all

  389. searching for truth.

  390. We want to base

  391. our lives on truth,

  392. don't we?

  393. And Jesus

  394. declares himself

  395. to be

  396. the truth.

  397. He's not just

  398. saying I'm

  399. telling the

  400. truth.

  401. He's not just

  402. saying I stand

  403. for the truth.

  404. He's not even

  405. saying that he's

  406. one important

  407. aspect among

  408. all the true

  409. things out there

  410. in the cosmos.

  411. He's saying

  412. he's ultimate

  413. reality

  414. in human form.

  415. He's saying

  416. that everything

  417. else that's

  418. true

  419. relies upon

  420. him.

  421. That the

  422. divine revelation

  423. of God

  424. became

  425. flesh,

  426. meat,

  427. as we saw

  428. in week one.

  429. It's not

  430. doctrinal

  431. propositions

  432. at the heart

  433. of the universe.

  434. it's a

  435. beating

  436. heart.

  437. Ultimate

  438. reality

  439. is a

  440. beating

  441. heart.

  442. He's

  443. saying

  444. I'm it.

  445. I'm

  446. the truth

  447. of God.

  448. And he's

  449. saying he

  450. is the

  451. life.

  452. Not only

  453. that he

  454. gives life,

  455. but that's

  456. a radical

  457. claim.

  458. he's

  459. saying in

  460. him

  461. was life,

  462. says John.

  463. That he

  464. himself is

  465. vigorously,

  466. fully alive.

  467. He is

  468. eternal life.

  469. He doesn't

  470. just give

  471. eternal life.

  472. He is

  473. life.

  474. If you're

  475. struggling to

  476. wrap your

  477. head around

  478. this,

  479. join the

  480. club.

  481. all of

  482. us want

  483. life to

  484. the full

  485. and he's

  486. saying he

  487. is it.

  488. We heard

  489. last week

  490. that amazing

  491. promise in

  492. raising Lazarus,

  493. everyone who

  494. lives in

  495. me and

  496. believes in

  497. me shall

  498. never die.

  499. If you're

  500. living in

  501. him,

  502. when I

  503. close my

  504. eyes for

  505. that final

  506. time,

  507. maybe in

  508. a hospital

  509. bed,

  510. there won't

  511. be even a

  512. millisecond of

  513. death because

  514. I've already

  515. entered that

  516. eternal life.

  517. I just get

  518. more of it.

  519. life.

  520. He describes

  521. eternal life

  522. this way in

  523. John 17

  524. when he's

  525. praying,

  526. this is

  527. eternal life

  528. that they

  529. know you,

  530. the only

  531. true God

  532. and Jesus

  533. Christ whom

  534. you have

  535. sent.

  536. He is

  537. the way

  538. because of

  539. who he

  540. is.

  541. He's the

  542. beating

  543. heart at

  544. the centre

  545. of the

  546. universe

  547. and in

  548. him is

  549. life.

  550. If you

  551. want life,

  552. it's found

  553. in him.

  554. Isn't

  555. Philip an

  556. encouraging

  557. disciple?

  558. Whenever you

  559. meet him,

  560. he always

  561. seems out

  562. of his

  563. depth.

  564. When the

  565. crowd of

  566. 5,000 are

  567. around and

  568. they're hungry,

  569. here's

  570. Philip's

  571. contribution.

  572. If we

  573. spend almost

  574. a year's

  575. wages,

  576. 200

  577. genari,

  578. all on

  579. bread,

  580. Jesus,

  581. actually,

  582. we still

  583. wouldn't have

  584. enough to

  585. give everyone

  586. just a taste.

  587. That's his

  588. solution to

  589. the problem.

  590. When some

  591. non-Jews want

  592. to come see

  593. Jesus,

  594. Philip's

  595. like,

  596. can you

  597. bring them?

  598. Can you

  599. turn them

  600. away?

  601. He's not

  602. sure.

  603. Andrew,

  604. what do

  605. we do?

  606. And here,

  607. he is out

  608. of his

  609. depth.

  610. Lord,

  611. show us

  612. the

  613. Father.

  614. That's

  615. enough for

  616. us.

  617. Now,

  618. to his

  619. credit,

  620. this is a

  621. bold request.

  622. No one

  623. has ever

  624. seen God.

  625. Even

  626. Moses only

  627. saw the

  628. back of

  629. God.

  630. Show us

  631. the

  632. Father.

  633. And he's

  634. saying,

  635. that's

  636. enough.

  637. We're

  638. troubled,

  639. but if I

  640. just saw

  641. God

  642. himself,

  643. I could

  644. keep going.

  645. We could

  646. keep going.

  647. It's a

  648. bold request.

  649. But notice

  650. Jesus'

  651. reply.

  652. It seems

  653. to be

  654. tinged

  655. with

  656. sadness.

  657. Have I

  658. been with

  659. you so

  660. long?

  661. And you

  662. still do

  663. not know

  664. me,

  665. Philip.

  666. Here I

  667. am.

  668. Is that

  669. enough for

  670. you,

  671. Philip?

  672. Philip,

  673. Philip,

  674. Philip,

  675. Philip,

  676. Philip,

  677. Philip,

  678. Philip,

  679. ?

  680. No one

  681. has

  682. ever

  683. seen

  684. God,

  685. the

  686. only

  687. God,

  688. who

  689. is at

  690. the

  691. Father's

  692. side.

  693. He

  694. has

  695. made

  696. him

  697. known.

  698. He

  699. is the

  700. only

  701. way

  702. to

  703. God

  704. because

  705. of

  706. who

  707. he

  708. is.

  709. He

  710. is the

  711. only

  712. door

  713. for the

  714. sheep

  715. because

  716. of

  717. who

  718. he

  719. is.

  720. Now

  721. Now, a human being that declares these things, like, surely Jesus is a fruitcake.

  722. Surely he's deranged.

  723. He's a liar.

  724. He's possessed by a demon, his contemporaries conclude.

  725. Why would you listen to a single word, someone saying, I am ultimate reality, I am life?

  726. You've got to treat him as a fruitcake or you've got to worship him.

  727. For those of us who believe, we have peace.

  728. How much peace is there?

  729. We know him.

  730. We know the way.

  731. There's a place for us in the Father's house and you know the way because you know him.

  732. And we have peace because all this is ours because of what he's done.

  733. Now, this is where I want to hone in on what does Jesus being the way mean?

  734. Again, I'm going to use that podcast.

  735. It was such a fascinating podcast of what people believe out in the world.

  736. Jordan, again, is pressed for a definition of a Christian.

  737. And Jordan, he's a quick thinker and he pauses, I don't know, 10 seconds.

  738. It's the longest pause I've ever heard him have.

  739. And then, I won't tell you the whole quote.

  740. Okay, so I'm oversimplifying this if you want to go listen to yourself.

  741. But he basically says, this is one of his things he says,

  742. I think the essence of the Christian faith is the imitation of Christ.

  743. Jesus is saying so much more than that.

  744. He's saying so much more than that.

  745. I'm the supreme example to imitate.

  746. If you use Jesus as your example to imitate, obviously we should,

  747. but as the basis of Christian faith, if you do that, I don't know about you,

  748. but that's going to crush me.

  749. I'm going to fail.

  750. I'm going to fail.

  751. Consider the timing of these words.

  752. Remember when these words were said.

  753. This is the night before he dies.

  754. In just a few hours, not one of his disciples are going to follow him.

  755. Not one are going to follow this way.

  756. They're going to abandon him.

  757. And he's saying, I am the way.

  758. In a few hours, the lies of the enemies are going to get victory over this truth.

  759. His corpse is going to hang limp.

  760. He's going to be pale and pierced.

  761. And he's saying, I am the life.

  762. To the world, this just sounds ridiculous.

  763. But it's not in spite of this, but it's because of this,

  764. that we see the Father most clearly when Jesus is on that cross.

  765. He says in verse 7, from now on, because he's going to that cross,

  766. from now on, you do know the Father.

  767. When he says he's going to prepare a place, he's not busy with carpentry.

  768. He means he's going to the cross.

  769. It's prepared.

  770. That our good shepherd would lay down his life for his sheep.

  771. Hebrews 10, 20 says,

  772. The way isn't Peter going, I'm ready to die for you, Jesus.

  773. That's not the way.

  774. The way is, believe me.

  775. Have peace in me.

  776. I prepare the way.

  777. From now on, we know God as our Father.

  778. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  779. Believe in God.

  780. Believe also in me.

  781. A place for you in my Father's house.

  782. You're expected.

  783. You know the way.

  784. Because of who I am.

  785. And he's done it all.

  786. At the cross, we know the Father.

  787. That's what all this means.

  788. There's so much peace in him.

  789. But in this peace, he's also preparing his disciples for great purpose.

  790. I wonder if you believe verses 12 to 14.

  791. If you've got your Bibles there.

  792. Let me read just a bit of it.

  793. Truly, truly, truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do and greater works than these will he do because I'm going to the Father.

  794. That's hard to believe, isn't it?

  795. Is this?

  796. Is this?

  797. Like, even the apostles going to do greater works than Jesus raising Lazarus?

  798. Is this just about the apostles doing miracles in the Acts of the Year?

  799. I don't know.

  800. Possibly.

  801. I suppose it's possible.

  802. But verse 12, it seems wider than that.

  803. Verse 12.

  804. Whoever believes.

  805. Whoever believes in me.

  806. So I agree with Bishop J.C. Ryle.

  807. What greater work is there than the conversion of the human soul?

  808. When at Pentecost, the church was just like 120 about now, and then 3,000 come.

  809. The truth and the life invading every nation, every heart, so many hearts.

  810. And he's using Philip, people like Philip.

  811. Ordinary, out of his depth, Philip.

  812. Ordinary, out of his depth, David.

  813. Ordinary, out of our depth, Grace Evangelical.

  814. He's using our witness.

  815. I don't even know why he's crediting his disciples.

  816. Surely it's him doing this conversion.

  817. And yet, it's him working through us.

  818. He's using us as the means to bear witness to the truth and life we've found in him.

  819. To convert people, to bring people into the Father's house.

  820. What greater work.

  821. He gives us peace.

  822. Peace.

  823. And in that peace, he just, he pushes us into such great purpose.

  824. We've had an encouraging mission month, but are we going to fan that passion into flame?

  825. Not just go, yes, we've done that in August.

  826. Is our witness going to grow individually and as a church?

  827. The world does not count this as important, but greater works.

  828. To share the peace that we've found.

  829. What a privilege.

  830. I would even go as far as to say, whatever's battering your faith at the moment, he's not just offering us peace.

  831. I think those times when we're battered, which is all the time, whatever's battering you is an opportunity to bear witness.

  832. That problem at work.

  833. Are you going to fight like the world does?

  834. Or are you going to show that, no, I've got peace.

  835. I've got peace in Jesus.

  836. I want to bear witness to him.

  837. Whatever's battering your faith.

  838. I think it's an opportunity to show we've found truth and life, the way, in him.

  839. Will you pray with me?

  840. Let's pray.

  841. Let's pray.

  842. Let's pray.

  843. Lord, forgive us for not dwelling on that permanent home that we'll have with you nearly as much as we should.

  844. I think I can pray for all of us.

  845. Let me pray for myself.

  846. Lord, I set my goals on such smaller things when we step back at these ultimate truths and your grace in promising a place for us.

  847. Lord, forgive us and help us to dwell on all that you've given us and the peace that we have in him.

  848. Lord, stir us up to share that peace with others.

  849. In Jesus' name, amen.

  850. Let's pray.
