  1. We're now going to read from God's Word, so if you can turn to Exodus chapter 15.

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  2. We'll start at verse 22, and we'll end at chapter 17, verse 7.

  3. Then the Lord made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur.

  4. They went three days into the wilderness and found no water.

  5. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter.

  6. Therefore it was named Marah.

  7. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

  8. And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

  9. There the Lord made a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, saying,

  10. If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in his eyes,

  11. and give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes,

  12. I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians.

  13. For I am the Lord your healer.

  14. Then they came to Elam, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees,

  15. and they encamped there by the water.

  16. They set out from Elam, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin,

  17. which is between Elam and Sinai.

  18. On the fifteenth day of the second month, after they had departed from the land of Egypt.

  19. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

  20. And the people of Israel said to them,

  21. Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt,

  22. where we sat by the meat pots, and ate bread for the full.

  23. For you have brought us out to this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

  24. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  25. Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you,

  26. and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day that I may test them,

  27. whether they will walk in the law or not.

  28. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in,

  29. it will be twice as much as they gather daily.

  30. So Moses and Aaron said to the people of Israel,

  31. At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

  32. And in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord,

  33. because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord.

  34. For what are we that you grumble against us?

  35. And Moses said,

  36. When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat,

  37. and in the morning bread to the full,

  38. because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him,

  39. what are we?

  40. Your grumbling is not against us, but against the Lord.

  41. Then Moses said to Aaron,

  42. Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel,

  43. Come near before the Lord,

  44. for he has heard your grumbling.

  45. As soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel,

  46. they looked towards the wilderness,

  47. and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

  48. And the Lord said to Moses,

  49. I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel.

  50. Say to them,

  51. At twilight you shall eat meat,

  52. and in the morning you shall be filled with bread,

  53. and then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.

  54. In the evening quail came up and covered the camp,

  55. and in the morning dew lay around the camp.

  56. And when the dew had gone up,

  57. there was on the face of the wilderness

  58. a fine flake-like thing,

  59. fine as frost on the ground.

  60. And when the people of Israel saw it,

  61. they said to one another,

  62. What is it?

  63. For they did not know what it was.

  64. And Moses said to them,

  65. It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

  66. This is what the Lord has commanded.

  67. Gather of it,

  68. each one of you,

  69. as much as he can eat.

  70. You shall each take an omer,

  71. according to the number of persons

  72. that each of you has in the tent.

  73. And the people of Israel did so.

  74. They gathered,

  75. some more,

  76. some less.

  77. But when they measured it with an omer,

  78. whoever gathered much had nothing left,

  79. whoever gathered little had no lack.

  80. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.

  81. And Moses said to them,

  82. Let no one leave any of it till the morning.

  83. But they did not listen to Moses.

  84. Some left part of it till the morning,

  85. and it bred worms and stank.

  86. And Moses was angry with them.

  87. Morning by morning they gathered it,

  88. each as much as he could eat,

  89. but when the sun grew hot,

  90. it melted.

  91. On the sixth day,

  92. they gathered twice as much bread,

  93. two omers each.

  94. And when all the leaders of the congregation came

  95. and told Moses,

  96. he said to them,

  97. This is what the Lord has commanded.

  98. Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest,

  99. a holy Sabbath to the Lord.

  100. Bake what you will bake,

  101. and boil what you will boil,

  102. and all that is left over is to be,

  103. all that is left over lay aside

  104. to be kept till the morning.

  105. So they laid it aside till the morning

  106. as Moses commanded them,

  107. and it did not stink,

  108. and there were no worms in it.

  109. Moses said,

  110. Eat it today,

  111. for today is a Sabbath to the Lord.

  112. Today you will not find it in the field.

  113. Six days you shall gather it,

  114. but on the seventh day,

  115. which is a Sabbath,

  116. there will be none.

  117. On the seventh day,

  118. some of the people went out together,

  119. but they found none.

  120. And the Lord said to Moses,

  121. How long will you refuse

  122. to keep my commandments and my laws?

  123. See, the Lord has given you the Sabbath.

  124. Therefore, on the sixth day,

  125. he gives you bread for two days.

  126. Remain each of you in his place.

  127. Let no one go out of his place

  128. on the seventh day.

  129. So the people rested on the seventh day.

  130. Now the house of Israel

  131. called its name Manna.

  132. It was like coriander seed,

  133. white,

  134. and the taste of it

  135. was like wafers made with honey.

  136. And Moses said,

  137. This is what the Lord has commanded.

  138. Let an oma of it be kept

  139. throughout your generations,

  140. so that they may see the bread

  141. which I fed you in the wilderness

  142. when I brought you out

  143. of the land of Egypt.

  144. And Moses said to Aaron,

  145. Take a jar

  146. and put an oma of manna in it

  147. and place it before the Lord

  148. to be kept throughout

  149. your generations.

  150. As the Lord commanded Moses,

  151. so Aaron placed it

  152. before the testimony

  153. to be kept.

  154. The people of Israel

  155. ate the manna

  156. for forty years

  157. till they came

  158. to a habitable land.

  159. They ate the manna

  160. till they came

  161. to the border

  162. of the land of Canaan.

  163. An oma is the tenth part

  164. of an ephah.

  165. All the congregation

  166. of the people of Israel

  167. moved on

  168. from the wilderness

  169. of sin by stages

  170. according to the commandment

  171. of the Lord

  172. and camped at Rephidim.

  173. But there was no water

  174. for the people to drink.

  175. Therefore the people

  176. quarreled with Moses

  177. and said,

  178. Give us water to drink.

  179. And Moses said to them,

  180. Why do you quarrel with me?

  181. Why do you test the Lord?

  182. But the people thirsted

  183. there for the water

  184. and the people grumbled

  185. against Moses

  186. and said,

  187. Why did you bring us

  188. out of Egypt?

  189. To kill us

  190. and our children

  191. and our livestock

  192. with thirst?

  193. So Moses cried to the Lord,

  194. What shall I do

  195. with his people?

  196. They are almost ready

  197. to stone me.

  198. And the Lord said to Moses,

  199. Pass on before the people

  200. taking with you

  201. some of the elders

  202. of Israel

  203. and taking your hand

  204. the staff

  205. with which you struck

  206. the Nile

  207. and go.

  208. Behold,

  209. I will stand before you

  210. there on the rock

  211. at Horeb

  212. and you shall strike

  213. the rock

  214. and water shall come

  215. out of it

  216. and the people

  217. will drink.

  218. And Moses did so

  219. in the sight

  220. of the elders

  221. of Israel

  222. and he called the name

  223. of the place

  224. Massah

  225. and Meribah

  226. because of the quarrelling

  227. of the people

  228. of Israel

  229. and because they

  230. tested the Lord

  231. by saying,

  232. Is the Lord among us

  233. or not?

  234. This is God's word.

  235. May he bless it to us.

  236. Good morning, church.

  237. How are you all doing?

  238. Good morning.

  239. Yeah, so

  240. nice day outside.

  241. Thank you all

  242. to be here

  243. and really appreciate

  244. the opportunity

  245. to be able to share

  246. God's word

  247. with you all

  248. today again.

  249. Yeah, I get a bit

  250. emotional

  251. every time I sing

  252. this song.

  253. I know I actually

  254. asked for the song

  255. and I don't know

  256. why I did it.

  257. Yeah, it reminds me

  258. of a really tough time

  259. that I had

  260. when we were away

  261. in the U.S.

  262. and I was

  263. studying

  264. in a seminary

  265. and

  266. yeah, my wife

  267. was suffering

  268. from a lot of

  269. health issues.

  270. A little bit depressing,

  271. you know,

  272. leaving family

  273. and friends

  274. and everything behind

  275. and

  276. you know,

  277. the Lord has provided

  278. every day

  279. and so if I start

  280. crying during the sermon,

  281. you know why.

  282. Yeah,

  283. why don't we pray

  284. before we start?

  285. Yeah.

  286. Oh Lord,

  287. you're just

  288. so faithful.

  289. Remember when I was young,

  290. I felt like we'd

  291. conquered a world.

  292. Nothing bad

  293. or that bad

  294. really ever happens.

  295. But Lord,

  296. life is hard

  297. that we thank you

  298. that morning

  299. by morning

  300. you show

  301. your mercies

  302. to us.

  303. And today,

  304. Lord,

  305. as we look

  306. into your word,

  307. may that same

  308. mercy be with us

  309. so that our hearts

  310. are not hardened

  311. and that your word

  312. will change

  313. our lives

  314. today

  315. and forevermore.

  316. In Jesus' name

  317. we pray.

  318. Amen.

  319. Amen.

  320. Right,

  321. so last week

  322. Dave spoke

  323. from Exodus

  324. 12 to 15

  325. about how God

  326. with his mighty hands

  327. redeemed

  328. the people of Israel

  329. from slavery

  330. by offering

  331. through the blood

  332. of Passover

  333. the Passover lamb

  334. and God destroyed

  335. all the pursuing enemies,

  336. the Egyptians,

  337. in the Red Sea.

  338. So when you read

  339. chapter 15,

  340. Exodus,

  341. the first three quarters

  342. of the chapter

  343. describes how

  344. the entire Israel,

  345. like a million people,

  346. were singing praises

  347. to the Lord

  348. and Miriam

  349. and all the women

  350. got out their instrument

  351. and started dancing away.

  352. It was like a great party,

  353. the greatest party

  354. the world has ever seen.

  355. It was an amazing time,

  356. happy times,

  357. but great times

  358. don't always last.

  359. In today's reading

  360. we see that

  361. three days into the wilderness

  362. and they ran into

  363. some major,

  364. major issues.

  365. Imagine one million people

  366. out in the desert

  367. somewhere

  368. with no water

  369. and then they ran out of bread

  370. and then they ran out of water again.

  371. It's like, you know,

  372. if some of you

  373. heard of

  374. or seen the images of

  375. or been to

  376. one of those

  377. Taylor Swift concerts

  378. or like a weekend concert

  379. that had happened recently,

  380. it's like 80,000 people

  381. each time,

  382. right?

  383. We have 20 times

  384. that people

  385. but there's no lights,

  386. no Wi-Fi,

  387. no music,

  388. no sound,

  389. no nothing.

  390. It was a disaster.

  391. So what's going on here?

  392. One minute

  393. is celebration

  394. and the next minute

  395. everything is falling apart.

  396. Across

  397. Exodus 15, 22

  398. to 17, 7

  399. there's an account

  400. of God

  401. putting Israel

  402. through a series

  403. of three trials

  404. just before

  405. they got to Mount Sinai

  406. to receive

  407. God's covenant law.

  408. So today

  409. we're going to talk about

  410. the trials

  411. of the redeemed.

  412. I call it

  413. a brief discussion.

  414. Why?

  415. Because it's such

  416. a huge topic.

  417. So given the time

  418. we have

  419. we can only

  420. scratch to service.

  421. So if you believe

  422. that God wants

  423. Christians

  424. to never suffer

  425. but be materially rich

  426. and healthy

  427. and happy

  428. all the time,

  429. that's the prosperity

  430. gospel in a nutshell.

  431. I hope our passage

  432. today

  433. may show you

  434. what the Bible

  435. thinks of that.

  436. and if you are

  437. going through

  438. some trying times

  439. at the moment

  440. whether it's

  441. a difficult job

  442. whether there are

  443. some relational issues

  444. at home

  445. with spouses

  446. or kids

  447. whether there is

  448. suffering

  449. with your loved ones

  450. with physical

  451. and mental health

  452. elderly care needs

  453. and so on

  454. my hope

  455. and prayer

  456. is that today's message

  457. will comfort

  458. and also encourage you.

  459. If you have some

  460. experience of trials

  461. in the past

  462. but everything

  463. is a-okay

  464. at the moment

  465. I also hope

  466. that this Bible

  467. passage today

  468. may help prepare you

  469. for the next big one

  470. because they do

  471. and they tend

  472. to come.

  473. Today's sermon

  474. will have two main sections.

  475. Section one

  476. is on understanding

  477. trials

  478. and then section two

  479. is going to be

  480. on responding

  481. to trials.

  482. Let's go into

  483. section one

  484. understanding trials.

  485. In the Bible

  486. there are different

  487. types of hardships

  488. that are highlighted.

  489. Some hardships

  490. are consequences

  491. of our sins.

  492. For example

  493. David lost his child

  494. born to Bathsheba

  495. after he basically

  496. committed adultery

  497. with her

  498. and had murdered

  499. her husband Uriah.

  500. You see that

  501. in 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  502. chapter 12.

  503. And in 1 Peter 4

  504. when Peter

  505. wrote to the Christians

  506. he said that

  507. fiery trials

  508. are given

  509. to Christians.

  510. Don't treat that

  511. as a surprise.

  512. But at the same time

  513. do not suffer

  514. as a murderer

  515. or thief etc.

  516. I told you

  517. trials come right?

  518. Yeah.

  519. So if you rob

  520. the bank

  521. or drive recklessly

  522. and end up

  523. in jail

  524. that is a consequence

  525. of sin

  526. which is not

  527. our focus today.

  528. And there are

  529. other hardships

  530. too.

  531. We often

  532. call trials

  533. and they are

  534. God ordained

  535. not because of

  536. any specific

  537. wrongdoings.

  538. God gives them

  539. to his people

  540. for a good reason

  541. not to fail

  542. or to break

  543. anyone.

  544. And we see that

  545. in Exodus 15

  546. 22 to 23.

  547. If you read

  548. the verses here

  549. it just says

  550. that God

  551. simply led

  552. through Moses

  553. Israel

  554. into the wilderness

  555. where there's

  556. no water

  557. to be found.

  558. And when they

  559. finally come

  560. to some sort

  561. of oasis

  562. and they found

  563. some water

  564. the water

  565. was not drinkable

  566. it was bitter.

  567. At that point

  568. in time

  569. have they done

  570. anything bad

  571. or naughty

  572. or said anything

  573. bad

  574. that deserves

  575. punishment?

  576. In fact

  577. over the last

  578. couple of

  579. verses

  580. like the whole

  581. chapter

  582. before this

  583. they were just

  584. singing and

  585. dancing and

  586. praising God

  587. for his

  588. redemption.

  589. And similarly

  590. in Job 1

  591. they also

  592. record a

  593. conversation

  594. between God

  595. and Satan

  596. on Job

  597. is to go

  598. through some

  599. serious trials

  600. not because

  601. he was sinful

  602. but because

  603. he was righteous.

  604. He ended up

  605. losing

  606. what?

  607. His wealth

  608. his health

  609. his kids

  610. but God

  611. allowed it

  612. all for

  613. good purpose.

  614. Some might

  615. say that God

  616. kept his wife

  617. as a punishment

  618. but let's

  619. not go there

  620. for now.

  621. This is the

  622. kind of trial

  623. or hardship

  624. we will focus

  625. on today.

  626. God giving

  627. trials to

  628. his people

  629. for a good

  630. purpose.

  631. And there

  632. is another

  633. kind of

  634. hardship too

  635. which is

  636. neither of

  637. the above.

  638. Like in

  639. John 9

  640. there was a

  641. blind man

  642. who was born

  643. blind.

  644. Disciples

  645. asked Jesus

  646. why was this

  647. guy blind?

  648. His sins

  649. or his

  650. parents?

  651. And what

  652. did Jesus

  653. say?

  654. He was

  655. neither.

  656. He was

  657. blind simply

  658. to show

  659. the works

  660. of God

  661. to bring

  662. glory to

  663. him.

  664. So this

  665. is not

  666. the type

  667. of hardship

  668. we will

  669. look into

  670. either.

  671. We will

  672. leave that

  673. for another

  674. time.

  675. Okay,

  676. so why

  677. does God

  678. give his

  679. people trials?

  680. Why test

  681. a person

  682. through

  683. hardship?

  684. Well,

  685. for a variety

  686. of reasons.

  687. First,

  688. it's to

  689. reveal,

  690. which is in

  691. your bulletin,

  692. or prove

  693. a person's

  694. nature or

  695. character.

  696. In the

  697. Exodus 15-17 story

  698. today,

  699. Israel proved to

  700. be a rebellious

  701. nation full of

  702. people,

  703. full of

  704. resentment.

  705. Three times they

  706. lacked food and

  707. water,

  708. and what did

  709. they do?

  710. Three times they

  711. grumbled.

  712. Twice they accused

  713. God of wanting to

  714. mass murder them

  715. by withholding food

  716. and water,

  717. despite his

  718. saving grace.

  719. in Exodus 16,

  720. God told them

  721. he would provide

  722. them with manna

  723. daily,

  724. okay,

  725. so do not

  726. keep the manna

  727. until the next

  728. morning.

  729. But what did

  730. they do?

  731. They disobeyed

  732. and kept the

  733. manna,

  734. so it stank

  735. and started

  736. going wormy.

  737. God also told

  738. them to stop

  739. gathering on

  740. the seventh

  741. day,

  742. that is,

  743. keep the

  744. Sabbath to

  745. the Lord,

  746. and they went

  747. out and

  748. gathered.

  749. Now,

  750. keeping

  751. Sabbath,

  752. and in fact,

  753. all of God's

  754. command,

  755. are God's

  756. call to

  757. his people

  758. into sonship,

  759. not into another

  760. form of slavery.

  761. God wants his

  762. people to reflect

  763. his character

  764. and the things

  765. that he does.

  766. So God rested

  767. on the seventh

  768. day,

  769. so he wants

  770. his people,

  771. his sons and

  772. daughters,

  773. to be like him.

  774. Be holy

  775. because I am

  776. holy,

  777. and like Jesus

  778. said,

  779. be perfect

  780. because your

  781. Father in heaven

  782. is perfect.

  783. God's call

  784. to obey

  785. is not

  786. to call

  787. people into

  788. slavery,

  789. put a huge

  790. burden or

  791. yoke on

  792. them,

  793. but to call

  794. them into

  795. sonship,

  796. like father,

  797. like son.

  798. But the people

  799. of Israel

  800. did not get it.

  801. They were

  802. proven to be

  803. a rebellious

  804. people.

  805. And Jesus,

  806. in Matthew 4,

  807. on the other

  808. hand,

  809. was also led

  810. into the

  811. wilderness

  812. to be

  813. tried and

  814. tested.

  815. For 40

  816. days,

  817. he had no

  818. food or

  819. drink,

  820. but he

  821. didn't grumble

  822. a single

  823. time.

  824. In fact,

  825. Satan

  826. tempted him

  827. with all

  828. the tricks

  829. to repeat

  830. Israel's

  831. prior mistakes,

  832. which we saw

  833. in the passage

  834. today.

  835. But Jesus

  836. proved to be

  837. absolutely

  838. obedient to

  839. God as

  840. the Son of

  841. God,

  842. whom God

  843. is well

  844. pleased.

  845. And that

  846. is the

  847. first thing

  848. that God

  849. declared when

  850. Jesus came

  851. out of being

  852. baptized by

  853. John the

  854. Baptist.

  855. With us as

  856. Christians,

  857. God uses

  858. trials to

  859. reveal our

  860. character,

  861. how broken

  862. we are,

  863. and how

  864. much we

  865. need him,

  866. and the

  867. gospel of

  868. Jesus Christ.

  869. The beauty

  870. is that he

  871. does not judge

  872. us by our

  873. character,

  874. because we

  875. are hidden

  876. in Christ,

  877. as Paul

  878. says in

  879. Colossians 3,

  880. chapter 3,

  881. verse 3.

  882. It is like

  883. we are pieces

  884. of silver

  885. jewelry,

  886. and if you're

  887. familiar with

  888. silver,

  889. or have some

  890. silver earrings,

  891. whatever,

  892. they always

  893. go black.

  894. That is us,

  895. that's our

  896. character,

  897. that is how

  898. we're supposed

  899. to be judged.

  900. But what we

  901. need is to be

  902. gold-plated,

  903. and Jesus

  904. is our gold,

  905. he covers us

  906. all the way

  907. through and

  908. through,

  909. so that when

  910. God sees us,

  911. he only sees

  912. Jesus'

  913. character,

  914. which is pure

  915. gold.

  916. God gives

  917. his people

  918. trials to

  919. prove their

  920. nature and

  921. character.

  922. That is the

  923. first reason

  924. God puts

  925. his people

  926. through trials.

  927. The second

  928. reason God

  929. gives his

  930. people trials

  931. is to humble

  932. and teach

  933. his people,

  934. us,

  935. to live

  936. God-dependent

  937. lives.

  938. In Exodus

  939. 16, the

  940. Israelites started

  941. to complain

  942. about their

  943. food.

  944. It's been

  945. 45 days

  946. since they

  947. left Egypt,

  948. so their

  949. bread had

  950. probably run

  951. out.

  952. God gave

  953. them a few

  954. simple commands

  955. related to

  956. the manna,

  957. how much

  958. to gather

  959. on each

  960. day, and

  961. how long

  962. to keep

  963. and not

  964. to keep

  965. the manna,

  966. etc.

  967. Why?

  968. God says

  969. in Exodus

  970. 16, 4,

  971. and you can

  972. take a look

  973. with me,

  974. he says,

  975. that I may

  976. test them

  977. whether or

  978. not they

  979. will walk

  980. in my

  981. instruction.

  982. To walk

  983. in, in

  984. the Hebrews

  985. mind, is

  986. to not go

  987. for a hike,

  988. but to

  989. live with

  990. or live

  991. by.

  992. In

  993. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  994. 8, verse

  995. 3, when

  996. Moses was

  997. speaking of

  998. this same

  999. manna

  1000. incident to

  1001. the Israelites,

  1002. he further

  1003. explained that

  1004. God humbled

  1005. you and

  1006. let you be

  1007. hungry and

  1008. fed you

  1009. with manna

  1010. which you

  1011. did not

  1012. know, nor

  1013. did your

  1014. fathers know

  1015. that he

  1016. might make

  1017. you understand

  1018. that man

  1019. does not

  1020. live by

  1021. bread alone,

  1022. but man

  1023. lives by

  1024. everything

  1025. that proceeds

  1026. out of

  1027. the mouth

  1028. of God.

  1029. In other

  1030. words, true

  1031. living is

  1032. not by

  1033. what goes

  1034. into our

  1035. mouth, but

  1036. what comes

  1037. out of

  1038. God's

  1039. mouth.

  1040. God's put

  1041. people through

  1042. trials in

  1043. order to

  1044. humble them

  1045. so that they

  1046. may experience

  1047. how life-giving

  1048. and dependable

  1049. his every

  1050. word is.

  1051. American

  1052. author

  1053. Joni

  1054. Erickson

  1055. Tata, who

  1056. suffered a

  1057. diving accident

  1058. when she

  1059. was a

  1060. teenager and

  1061. was made

  1062. quadripedric,

  1063. basically

  1064. paralyzed from

  1065. the neck

  1066. down, one

  1067. said that

  1068. in a way,

  1069. I hope I

  1070. can take my

  1071. wheelchair to

  1072. heaven with

  1073. me.

  1074. I know that

  1075. this is not

  1076. biblically

  1077. correct, but

  1078. if I were

  1079. able, I

  1080. would have

  1081. my wheelchair

  1082. up in

  1083. heaven right

  1084. next to me

  1085. when God

  1086. gives me my

  1087. brand new

  1088. glorified body.

  1089. and I

  1090. will then

  1091. turn to

  1092. Jesus and

  1093. say, Lord,

  1094. do you see

  1095. the wheelchair

  1096. right here?

  1097. Well, you

  1098. were right

  1099. when you

  1100. said that

  1101. in this

  1102. world we

  1103. would have

  1104. trouble,

  1105. because that

  1106. wheelchair

  1107. was a lot

  1108. of trouble.

  1109. But Jesus,

  1110. the weaker

  1111. I was in

  1112. that thing,

  1113. the harder

  1114. I leaned

  1115. on you.

  1116. And the

  1117. harder I

  1118. leaned on

  1119. you, the

  1120. stronger I

  1121. discovered you

  1122. to be.

  1123. What a

  1124. prayer.

  1125. Instead of

  1126. praying for

  1127. the Lord

  1128. to take

  1129. away our

  1130. trials,

  1131. maybe we

  1132. should pray

  1133. and ask

  1134. God to

  1135. make us

  1136. better at

  1137. leaning on

  1138. him through

  1139. our trials.

  1140. A step

  1141. at a time

  1142. and a day

  1143. at a time.

  1144. The third

  1145. reason, the

  1146. third point I

  1147. would like to

  1148. share about

  1149. the why of

  1150. trials, it's

  1151. not so much

  1152. about the

  1153. why of

  1154. trials, but

  1155. to talk to

  1156. others about

  1157. the why of

  1158. trials.

  1159. trials.

  1160. When people

  1161. are going

  1162. through actual

  1163. trials and

  1164. sufferings, a

  1165. most natural

  1166. question people

  1167. tend to ask

  1168. is why.

  1169. And we

  1170. can see that

  1171. in Exodus

    Exodus 17:3

  1172. chapter 17

  1173. verse 3.

  1174. The Israelites

  1175. asked why.

  1176. Why?

  1177. Why?

  1178. But what

  1179. these people

  1180. who are in

  1181. pain most

  1182. likely don't

  1183. need is for

  1184. us to give

  1185. them a lecture

  1186. on how the

  1187. Lord is using

  1188. trials to

  1189. reveal their

  1190. character or

  1191. to humble

  1192. them.

  1193. That's not

  1194. what they

  1195. need.

  1196. They also

  1197. don't need

  1198. us to tell

  1199. them in a

  1200. personal way

  1201. that they are

  1202. being punished

  1203. because they

  1204. did something

  1205. wrong, like

  1206. Job's friend

  1207. did to Job

  1208. when he was

  1209. suffering his

  1210. losses.

  1211. And I've

  1212. learned from

  1213. my spiritual

  1214. mentors,

  1215. much wiser

  1216. men than me

  1217. who are in

  1218. their 80s,

  1219. that the

  1220. best we

  1221. can do

  1222. is what

  1223. Paul says

  1224. in Romans

  1225. 12,

  1226. chapter 15,

  1227. and I

  1228. read,

  1229. Rejoice

  1230. with those

  1231. who rejoice

  1232. and weep

  1233. with those

  1234. who weep.

  1235. And if

  1236. the people

  1237. who are

  1238. suffering

  1239. push us

  1240. on why

  1241. a good

  1242. God would

  1243. allow such

  1244. a bad

  1245. thing to

  1246. happen,

  1247. like I

  1248. was once

  1249. asked by

  1250. a man in

  1251. front of

  1252. his whole

  1253. family,

  1254. why would

  1255. God,

  1256. if he's

  1257. good,

  1258. allow my

  1259. 12-year-old

  1260. daughter to

  1261. die of a

  1262. car accident,

  1263. the best

  1264. thing to

  1265. say is,

  1266. I do

  1267. not know

  1268. why,

  1269. but I

  1270. know that

  1271. God is

  1272. good and

  1273. that he

  1274. is faithful.

  1275. So in

  1276. explaining the

  1277. why of

  1278. trials to

  1279. people who

  1280. are hurting,

  1281. it is best

  1282. to be a

  1283. listener and

  1284. not a

  1285. lecturer.

  1286. This

  1287. concludes

  1288. section 1,

  1289. the understanding

  1290. of trials

  1291. today,

  1292. and so

  1293. let's move

  1294. on to

  1295. section 2.

  1296. section 2

  1297. is on

  1298. responding to

  1299. trials,

  1300. and I

  1301. will share

  1302. three

  1303. tendencies

  1304. and

  1305. something

  1306. about

  1307. overcoming

  1308. them.

  1309. First

  1310. tendency

  1311. when facing

  1312. trials

  1313. is that

  1314. people

  1315. and us

  1316. tend to

  1317. bitterly

  1318. grumble

  1319. against the

  1320. Lord.

  1321. Once upon

  1322. a time,

  1323. a middle-aged

  1324. monk,

  1325. nothing

  1326. against

  1327. middle-aged

  1328. men,

  1329. by the

  1330. main,

  1331. that's me

  1332. by the

  1333. way,

  1334. named

  1335. Gabriel,

  1336. checked

  1337. into a

  1338. monastery

  1339. in Europe

  1340. where monks

  1341. are supposed

  1342. to practice

  1343. the spiritual

  1344. discipline of

  1345. solitude,

  1346. which means

  1347. they don't

  1348. talk to

  1349. anyone,

  1350. they'll hide

  1351. in their

  1352. room for

  1353. five years,

  1354. and they're

  1355. not allowed

  1356. to speak

  1357. a single

  1358. word to

  1359. anybody

  1360. for the

  1361. whole year

  1362. until the

  1363. end of

  1364. the year

  1365. when they

  1366. will be

  1367. summoned

  1368. into

  1369. this

  1370. headmaster's

  1371. room,

  1372. like the

  1373. head monk,

  1374. and they

  1375. will be

  1376. allowed to

  1377. share just

  1378. two words,

  1379. like a

  1380. summary of

  1381. everything that

  1382. they contemplated

  1383. for the whole

  1384. year.

  1385. And so,

  1386. the first year

  1387. had passed,

  1388. and Gabriel

  1389. showed up at

  1390. this head

  1391. monk's office,

  1392. and then the

  1393. head monk

  1394. asked him,

  1395. your two

  1396. words,

  1397. and Gabriel

  1398. said,

  1399. bad food.

  1400. I quit.

  1401. grumble.

  1402. And the

  1403. head monk

  1404. said,

  1405. Gabriel,

  1406. I'm not

  1407. surprised,

  1408. because all

  1409. you did

  1410. since your

  1411. arrived was

  1412. grumble.

  1413. In these

  1414. three wilderness

  1415. incidents where

  1416. Israel lacked

  1417. water and

  1418. food that we

  1419. read today,

  1420. the word

  1421. grumble was

  1422. used ten

  1423. times.

  1424. Don't count

  1425. it now,

  1426. I actually

  1427. counted for

  1428. you.

  1429. Yeah.

  1430. Instead of

  1431. keeping up with

  1432. praising the

  1433. Lord and

  1434. rescuing them

  1435. through the

  1436. ten plagues,

  1437. which wasn't

  1438. that long

  1439. ago,

  1440. all they

  1441. did was

  1442. grumble

  1443. since they

  1444. got there.

  1445. Not a

  1446. single word

  1447. of gratitude.

  1448. The wilderness

  1449. had quickly

  1450. turned worship

  1451. into whinging.

  1452. Does God

  1453. know what

  1454. he's doing?

  1455. Is the

  1456. Lord really

  1457. for us?

  1458. How is

  1459. this fair?

  1460. That's the

  1461. heart behind

  1462. the grumbling,

  1463. a heart of

  1464. distrust that

  1465. is not

  1466. different to

  1467. that of

  1468. Adam and

  1469. Eve in

  1470. the Garden

  1471. of Eden

  1472. when Satan

  1473. was testing

  1474. them.

  1475. Have we

  1476. not felt the

  1477. same in our

  1478. own wilderness

  1479. moments,

  1480. my friends and

  1481. brothers and

  1482. sisters?

  1483. Do we not

  1484. sing praises on

  1485. Sundays and

  1486. then on Monday

  1487. before lunch

  1488. when things

  1489. don't go as

  1490. we planned it,

  1491. we already

  1492. start whinging?

  1493. A way to

  1494. overcome the

  1495. bitterness that

  1496. swells up in

  1497. our hearts

  1498. whenever we

  1499. face our

  1500. trials and

  1501. suffering is

  1502. to remember

  1503. the Lord's

  1504. past faithfulness.

  1505. Where is

  1506. that in our

  1507. passage today?

  1508. In fact,

  1509. that's all

  1510. over our

  1511. passages today.

  1512. You see all

  1513. this naming

  1514. that's going

  1515. on in

  1516. Exodus 15

  1517. to 17.

  1518. In Exodus

  1519. 15 to

  1520. 1523,

  1521. Moses talks

  1522. about this

  1523. place where

  1524. they found

  1525. bitter water.

  1526. What did he

  1527. do?

  1528. They named

  1529. it Marah.

  1530. And then

  1531. in verse

  1532. 17.7,

  1533. where Moses

  1534. struck the

  1535. walk to get

  1536. the water,

  1537. he named

  1538. it Massa

  1539. and Meribah.

  1540. Marah,

  1541. Massa,

  1542. Meribah.

  1543. And Massa,

  1544. Meribah

  1545. literally means

  1546. test and

  1547. strive.

  1548. Why all

  1549. this naming?

  1550. You call

  1551. something

  1552. something to

  1553. help you

  1554. recall something.

  1555. That's what

  1556. it is.

  1557. All this

  1558. naming is to

  1559. help people

  1560. remember how

  1561. great God's

  1562. faithfulness was

  1563. towards Israel

  1564. despite their

  1565. unbelief.

  1566. These

  1567. were all

  1568. done and

  1569. all named

  1570. so that

  1571. people may

  1572. remember how

  1573. the Lord

  1574. graciously

  1575. provided and

  1576. provided and

  1577. provided to

  1578. an ungrateful

  1579. people that

  1580. did nothing

  1581. but grumble.

  1582. And beside

  1583. Merah,

  1584. Massa,

  1585. Meribah,

  1586. there's also

  1587. one more

  1588. name in the

  1589. passage.

  1590. What is it?

  1591. Manna.

  1592. Right?

  1593. Yeah,

  1594. Manna.

  1595. I wonder

  1596. why all

  1597. these M's?

  1598. Manna means

  1599. what is it?

  1600. And in

  1601. Exodus 16.32,

  1602. the Lord

  1603. commanded them

  1604. to keep a

  1605. jar of

  1606. manna,

  1607. not for one

  1608. day,

  1609. not for one

  1610. week,

  1611. but for

  1612. future

  1613. generations,

  1614. a jar

  1615. of manna

  1616. like a

  1617. two-liter

  1618. bottle that

  1619. never expires.

  1620. Why?

  1621. So that

  1622. the future

  1623. generations

  1624. of Israel

  1625. may remember

  1626. that the

  1627. Lord had

  1628. faithfully

  1629. been feeding

  1630. their ancestors

  1631. for 40

  1632. whole years

  1633. in the

  1634. wilderness,

  1635. every single

  1636. day.

  1637. To overcome

  1638. our distrusting

  1639. heart in the

  1640. wilderness,

  1641. we need to

  1642. turn whinging

  1643. into worship,

  1644. start recounting

  1645. his blessings

  1646. and how the

  1647. Lord has

  1648. shown us

  1649. undeserved

  1650. grace again

  1651. and again

  1652. and again,

  1653. from our

  1654. daily bread

  1655. to our

  1656. everyday breath

  1657. to all the

  1658. good times we

  1659. had and all

  1660. the bad times

  1661. and trials that

  1662. we have

  1663. experienced to

  1664. date.

  1665. And then

  1666. somehow they

  1667. have magically

  1668. dissipated.

  1669. The Lord

  1670. has been

  1671. faithful.

  1672. Remember

  1673. God's

  1674. grace

  1675. all the

  1676. way to

  1677. the cross.

  1678. That way,

  1679. even in the

  1680. midst of a

  1681. major trial,

  1682. we may pray

  1683. what Job

  1684. prayed in

  1685. Job chapter

    Job 1 chapter mention

  1686. 1.

  1687. The Lord

  1688. has given

  1689. and the

  1690. Lord has

  1691. taken away.

  1692. Blessed

  1693. be the

  1694. name of

  1695. the Lord.

  1696. And also

  1697. in Job

  1698. 19 where

  1699. he said,

  1700. For I

  1701. know that

  1702. my

  1703. Redeemer

  1704. lives and

  1705. at last

  1706. he will

  1707. stand upon

  1708. the earth.

  1709. that's the

  1710. first tendency

  1711. when we

  1712. face trials,

  1713. bitterly

  1714. grumble

  1715. against the

  1716. Lord.

  1717. The second

  1718. tendency

  1719. when we

  1720. face trial

  1721. is to

  1722. lust

  1723. after our

  1724. old lives.

  1725. Life would

  1726. have been

  1727. better if I

  1728. weren't a

  1729. Christian,

  1730. wouldn't it?

  1731. Exodus

  1732. 16.3,

  1733. as we see it,

  1734. the sons

  1735. of Israel

  1736. said,

  1737. With

  1738. that we

  1739. had died

  1740. by the

  1741. Lord's

  1742. hand in

  1743. the land

  1744. of Egypt

  1745. when we

  1746. sat by

  1747. the pots

  1748. of meat

  1749. when we

  1750. ate bread

  1751. to the

  1752. full,

  1753. for you

  1754. have brought

  1755. us out

  1756. into this

  1757. wilderness

  1758. to kill

  1759. this whole

  1760. assembly

  1761. with hunger.

  1762. Did

  1763. Egyptians

  1764. really let

  1765. the Israelites

  1766. have

  1767. lamb stew

  1768. for dinner

  1769. or bread

  1770. to the

  1771. full?

  1772. That's

  1773. questionable,

  1774. isn't it?

  1775. were they

  1776. really dying

  1777. of hunger

  1778. out in

  1779. the wilderness?

  1780. I don't

  1781. think so.

  1782. The Israelites

  1783. said in

  1784. chapter 17

  1785. verse 3

  1786. that they

  1787. needed water

  1788. not just

  1789. for them

  1790. and their

  1791. kids,

  1792. but their

  1793. livestock.

  1794. They have

  1795. all these

  1796. cows and

  1797. goats and

  1798. probably chicken

  1799. as well

  1800. running around

  1801. needing water.

  1802. So how

  1803. are they

  1804. dying of

  1805. hunger?

  1806. There's

  1807. no way

  1808. they're

  1809. dying of

  1810. hunger.

  1811. So what's

  1812. going on

  1813. with these

  1814. folks?

  1815. Well,

  1816. they were

  1817. physically

  1818. redeemed

  1819. from

  1820. slavery,

  1821. but their

  1822. hearts

  1823. still in

  1824. Egypt.

  1825. Dissatisfied

  1826. with their

  1827. circumstances,

  1828. they began

  1829. imagining in

  1830. their heads

  1831. that life

  1832. was better

  1833. in Egypt

  1834. and that

  1835. their future

  1836. as promised

  1837. under this

  1838. Yahweh God

  1839. was overrated.

  1840. When facing

  1841. trials,

  1842. have you

  1843. ever said

  1844. to yourself

  1845. that things

  1846. used to be

  1847. so much

  1848. better when

  1849. I was

  1850. not a

  1851. Christian?

  1852. I know

  1853. I have.

  1854. When I

  1855. was not

  1856. a Christian,

  1857. I could

  1858. steal,

  1859. I could

  1860. lie,

  1861. I could

  1862. cheat in

  1863. my tax

  1864. returns,

  1865. indulge in

  1866. food,

  1867. alcohol,

  1868. gambling,

  1869. watch dodgy

  1870. shows,

  1871. do anything

  1872. without feeling

  1873. too bad

  1874. about it.

  1875. Wasn't

  1876. life so

  1877. much more

  1878. fun and

  1879. satisfying?

  1880. Before I

  1881. was Christian?

  1882. Absolutely.

  1883. So when I

  1884. was going

  1885. through a

  1886. marriage meltdown,

  1887. or when I

  1888. was having a

  1889. bad patch in

  1890. my corporate

  1891. career,

  1892. or when my

  1893. kids were

  1894. driving me

  1895. insane,

  1896. checking that

  1897. she's there

  1898. and listening,

  1899. you know,

  1900. I was literally

  1901. thinking about

  1902. these things,

  1903. yes,

  1904. life was good,

  1905. what am I

  1906. doing here

  1907. as a

  1908. Christian?

  1909. I've

  1910. lusted after

  1911. my good old

  1912. lives and

  1913. my good old

  1914. days.

  1915. I'm not

  1916. proud of it,

  1917. but that's

  1918. what I've

  1919. done,

  1920. and I may

  1921. do it again

  1922. during hard

  1923. times.

  1924. So how can

  1925. we overcome

  1926. the lust

  1927. of our

  1928. old lives?

  1929. One of my

  1930. mentors,

  1931. Dr. John

  1932. Hanna,

  1933. his name,

  1934. once said

  1935. that you

  1936. can't just

  1937. will away

  1938. something sweet

  1939. unless you

  1940. replace it

  1941. with something

  1942. sweeter.

  1943. You can't

  1944. just think

  1945. and say,

  1946. oh,

  1947. I'm going

  1948. to stop

  1949. it,

  1950. you know,

  1951. you can't

  1952. just will

  1953. it away.

  1954. In

  1955. response to

  1956. Israel's

  1957. lust after

  1958. their imaginary

  1959. good lives

  1960. in Egypt,

  1961. the Lord

  1962. literally had

  1963. provided

  1964. something sweeter

  1965. to them

  1966. as a

  1967. replacement.

  1968. He rained

  1969. down

  1970. manna,

  1971. which 1631

  1972. says,

  1973. tasted like

  1974. wavers

  1975. with honey.

  1976. Now,

  1977. that's a

  1978. whole lot

  1979. of sugar

  1980. in their

  1981. mouths.

  1982. And for

  1983. Christians,

  1984. he didn't

  1985. just rain

  1986. down

  1987. manna,

  1988. but sent

  1989. his own

  1990. beloved son,

  1991. the true

  1992. manna of

  1993. heaven,

  1994. to be

  1995. broken for

  1996. us and

  1997. to fill

  1998. our thirsty

  1999. hearts

  2000. to the

  2001. full.

  2002. Jesus

  2003. said in

  2004. John 6

  2005. 35,

  2006. and this

  2007. is preached

  2008. not too

  2009. long ago,

  2010. I'm the

  2011. bread of

  2012. life.

  2013. Whoever

  2014. comes to

  2015. me shall

  2016. not hunger,

  2017. and whoever

  2018. believes in

  2019. me shall

  2020. never thirst.

  2021. Notice

  2022. here that

  2023. Jesus didn't

  2024. say in

  2025. past tense,

  2026. whoever

  2027. came to

  2028. me and

  2029. believed

  2030. in me

  2031. will never

  2032. hunger

  2033. or thirst.

  2034. Both

  2035. actions

  2036. comes and

  2037. believes

  2038. are in

  2039. present tense.

  2040. to be

  2041. fulfilled

  2042. by Jesus

  2043. is to

  2044. come and

  2045. to trust

  2046. in him

  2047. day by

  2048. day,

  2049. moment by

  2050. moment,

  2051. savouring

  2052. his sweet

  2053. amazing grace

  2054. that saves

  2055. a wretch

  2056. like me.

  2057. Only

  2058. Christ and

  2059. what he

  2060. has done

  2061. is sweet

  2062. and satisfying

  2063. enough to

  2064. overcome the

  2065. lust of

  2066. our lives

  2067. and of our

  2068. old lives

  2069. in the midst

  2070. of our

  2071. trials.

  2072. So that's

  2073. the second

  2074. tendency

  2075. when we

  2076. face

  2077. trials,

  2078. lusting

  2079. after our

  2080. old lives.

  2081. And the

  2082. third tendency,

  2083. and this

  2084. will be our

  2085. last point

  2086. today,

  2087. when facing

  2088. trials,

  2089. is we

  2090. could be

  2091. putting God

  2092. on trial

  2093. when trials

  2094. persist.

  2095. When Israel

  2096. arrived at

  2097. Revedim,

  2098. which means

  2099. the place

  2100. of rest

  2101. in Exodus

  2102. 17,

  2103. they had

  2104. already

  2105. grumbled

  2106. about the

  2107. water and

  2108. about the

  2109. food.

  2110. And here

  2111. again,

  2112. they ran

  2113. out of

  2114. water.

  2115. What is

  2116. different this

  2117. time is

  2118. that they

  2119. have escalated

  2120. the issue

  2121. into some

  2122. sort of

  2123. lawsuit against

  2124. Moses and

  2125. against God.

  2126. They

  2127. quarreled or

  2128. contended with

  2129. Moses in

  2130. verse 2,

  2131. accused God

  2132. of attempting

  2133. to murder

  2134. them by

  2135. thirst in

  2136. verse 3,

  2137. and they

  2138. threatened to

  2139. stone Moses

  2140. in verse 4.

  2141. That's

  2142. basically getting

  2143. ready to

  2144. execute him.

  2145. God's

  2146. perspective,

  2147. they were

  2148. testing the

  2149. Lord by

  2150. questioning

  2151. his presence

  2152. in verse 7,

  2153. chapter 17,

  2154. and trying

  2155. his patience.

  2156. They were

  2157. effectively saying

  2158. to God,

  2159. where are

  2160. you?

  2161. Show me

  2162. the water.

  2163. In a

  2164. nutshell,

  2165. they are

  2166. putting his

  2167. character and

  2168. his existence

  2169. on trial

  2170. when trials

  2171. persisted.

  2172. From our

  2173. perspective,

  2174. we may think

  2175. that Israel

  2176. are just

  2177. being ridiculous,

  2178. but now

  2179. they have

  2180. experienced no

  2181. less than

  2182. 14 plagues,

  2183. right?

  2184. Ten plagues

  2185. in Egypt,

  2186. crossing the

  2187. Red Sea,

  2188. turning bitter

  2189. into sweet,

  2190. and then

  2191. raining down

  2192. quail,

  2193. raining down

  2194. manna,

  2195. and there

  2196. are more.

  2197. How on

  2198. earth can

  2199. they say,

  2200. is the

  2201. Lord amongst

  2202. us or not,

  2203. in verse

  2204. 7?

  2205. The point

  2206. here is that

  2207. seeing is not

  2208. always believing.

  2209. God is

  2210. merciful and

  2211. gracious,

  2212. slow to

  2213. anger,

  2214. and abounding

  2215. in steadfast love

  2216. and faithfulness.

  2217. He told

  2218. Moses to take

  2219. the same

  2220. staff that he

  2221. used,

  2222. which struck

  2223. the water in

  2224. Egypt and

  2225. turned the

  2226. water in

  2227. blood,

  2228. and then

  2229. bring a

  2230. group of

  2231. elders to

  2232. Mount Sinai,

  2233. that's Horeb,

  2234. struck the

  2235. rock,

  2236. and miraculously

  2237. caused water

  2238. to gush

  2239. out,

  2240. enough to

  2241. feed over

  2242. a million

  2243. people in

  2244. the wilderness.

  2245. That is

  2246. something like

  2247. two million

  2248. litres of

  2249. water a

  2250. day.

  2251. The

  2252. Israelites

  2253. were contending

  2254. with God

  2255. and putting

  2256. him to the

  2257. rest,

  2258. but God,

  2259. instead of

  2260. giving blood

  2261. which they

  2262. deserved,

  2263. comforted them

  2264. with plenty

  2265. of water

  2266. and gave

  2267. them rest.

  2268. As

  2269. Christians,

  2270. let us be

  2271. reminded that

  2272. we are not

  2273. immune to

  2274. similar

  2275. behaviours to

  2276. the Israelites.

  2277. When things

  2278. don't work out

  2279. the way we

  2280. want for a

  2281. very,

  2282. very,

  2283. very long

  2284. time,

  2285. we may be

  2286. keeping to

  2287. pray and

  2288. pray and

  2289. pray,

  2290. but there is

  2291. silence.

  2292. There seems

  2293. to be no

  2294. answer.

  2295. Don't we

  2296. sometimes test

  2297. God by

  2298. asking him,

  2299. God,

  2300. show me a

  2301. sign?

  2302. Or God,

  2303. how about

  2304. we do a

  2305. deal?

  2306. If I do

  2307. that,

  2308. do this,

  2309. why don't

  2310. you do

  2311. that for

  2312. me?

  2313. Take my

  2314. trials away.

  2315. That is

  2316. actually

  2317. testing God

  2318. and as we

  2319. saw in

  2320. Matthew,

  2321. that is

  2322. exactly what

  2323. Satan did

  2324. when he

  2325. tested Jesus.

  2326. Indeed,

  2327. the Lord

  2328. has been

  2329. even more

  2330. gracious to

  2331. us than

  2332. to the

  2333. Israelites

  2334. in Exodus

  2335. in so

  2336. many ways.

  2337. You know

  2338. the rock

  2339. that Moses

  2340. struck and

  2341. the water

  2342. came flying

  2343. out?

  2344. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:4

  2345. 10,

  2346. verse 4,

  2347. Paul says

  2348. that rock

  2349. is Christ.

  2350. On the

  2351. cross,

  2352. Christ took

  2353. the trial

  2354. that we

  2355. deserved

  2356. and was

  2357. condemned

  2358. for our

  2359. sins,

  2360. not his,

  2361. and was

  2362. struck not

  2363. by a

  2364. staff,

  2365. but a

  2366. spear.

  2367. John

  2368. 19,

  2369. 33 to

  2370. 34 tells

  2371. us that

  2372. both blood

  2373. and water

  2374. came out

  2375. when that

  2376. spear went

  2377. into Christ's

  2378. side,

  2379. for you

  2380. and for

  2381. me.

  2382. So what

  2383. are the

  2384. implications

  2385. for us

  2386. when we

  2387. face trials

  2388. and trials

  2389. persist?

  2390. For those

  2391. of us who

  2392. are in

  2393. Christ,

  2394. our trials

  2395. are purifications

  2396. like gold

  2397. being refined

  2398. by fire,

  2399. and they are

  2400. not God's

  2401. judgment

  2402. judgment

  2403. because

  2404. Jesus

  2405. had taken

  2406. God's

  2407. judgment

  2408. for us.

  2409. Trials

  2410. can be

  2411. painful,

  2412. but they

  2413. are loving

  2414. disciplinary

  2415. actions

  2416. or training,

  2417. not

  2418. wrathful

  2419. abuse.

  2420. Think of

  2421. a swimming

  2422. coach

  2423. telling his

  2424. team to

  2425. do 100

  2426. push-ups.

  2427. He's not

  2428. there to

  2429. break them.

  2430. He's there

  2431. to make

  2432. them stronger.

  2433. Romans

    Romans 8:1

  2434. chapter 8

  2435. verse 1

  2436. says,

  2437. there's now

  2438. no condemnation

  2439. for those

  2440. who are

  2441. in Christ

  2442. Jesus.

  2443. When trials

  2444. persist,

  2445. let us rest

  2446. in the fact

  2447. that God

  2448. is not

  2449. putting us

  2450. back onto

  2451. the stand

  2452. to try us.

  2453. His

  2454. court is

  2455. adjourned,

  2456. and for

  2457. now,

  2458. he is

  2459. sanctifying

  2460. us,

  2461. making us

  2462. become more

  2463. like Jesus

  2464. before he

  2465. returns.

  2466. When trials

  2467. persist,

  2468. there can

  2469. also be

  2470. time when

  2471. we feel

  2472. like that

  2473. God has

  2474. abandoned

  2475. us or

  2476. has turned

  2477. his face

  2478. away from

  2479. us and

  2480. has caused

  2481. everyone else

  2482. to do the

  2483. same.

  2484. That's just

  2485. like the

  2486. psalmist in

  2487. Psalms 88.

  2488. This psalmist

  2489. was feeling

  2490. totally hopeless

  2491. and he did

  2492. not even have

  2493. the strength

  2494. to write

  2495. something like,

  2496. I still trust

  2497. in you,

  2498. O Lord,

  2499. like most

  2500. of the

  2501. lament

  2502. psalms do.

  2503. But God's

  2504. actual presence

  2505. is not

  2506. dependent on

  2507. our perceived

  2508. feelings.

  2509. God will

  2510. always accept

  2511. rather than

  2512. abandon us

  2513. because Christ,

  2514. bearing our

  2515. sins on the

  2516. cross,

  2517. had already

  2518. taken the

  2519. abandonment

  2520. that we

  2521. deserve.

  2522. The Bible

  2523. also tells

  2524. us again

  2525. and again

  2526. that our

  2527. God,

  2528. Jesus Christ's

  2529. presence and

  2530. his works

  2531. continue on

  2532. earth even

  2533. though he's

  2534. now gone to

  2535. be with the

  2536. Father.

  2537. His

  2538. presence and

  2539. his work

  2540. continues through

  2541. the Holy

  2542. Spirit that

  2543. now lives

  2544. in us.

  2545. We can

  2546. grieve and

  2547. quench the

  2548. Holy Spirit

  2549. but if we

  2550. trust in

  2551. Christ,

  2552. his Spirit

  2553. is in and

  2554. among us

  2555. every second

  2556. of the day

  2557. and he will

  2558. never leave

  2559. us without

  2560. condition.

  2561. So dear

  2562. brothers and

  2563. sisters,

  2564. when trials

  2565. persist,

  2566. no matter

  2567. how you

  2568. feel,

  2569. never lose

  2570. hope.

  2571. And I

  2572. conclude as

  2573. Paul Tripp

  2574. writes in his

  2575. book, 40

  2576. Days of

  2577. Hope.

  2578. Our hope

  2579. has a name

  2580. and his

  2581. name is

  2582. Jesus.

  2583. Let's

  2584. pray.

  2585. Our

  2586. heavenly

  2587. Father,

  2588. again we

  2589. thank you

  2590. for your

  2591. faithfulness.

  2592. When life

  2593. gets tough,

  2594. Lord,

  2595. give us

  2596. strength,

  2597. strength,

  2598. no,

  2599. give us

  2600. weakness

  2601. to lean

  2602. on you

  2603. so that

  2604. we can

  2605. know you

  2606. and your

  2607. strength.

  2608. Shine

  2609. the light

  2610. of Christ

  2611. and his

  2612. death and

  2613. his

  2614. resurrection

  2615. upon us,

  2616. Lord,

  2617. so that

  2618. our hope

  2619. can be

  2620. loud and

  2621. clear

  2622. every day

  2623. all the

  2624. time.

  2625. We love

  2626. you,

  2627. Lord.

  2628. In your

  2629. son's name

  2630. we pray.

  2631. Amen.

  2632. Amen.

  2633. Amen.

  2634. Amen.

  2635. Amen.

  2636. Amen.

  2637. Amen.

  2638. Amen.

  2639. Amen.

  2640. Amen.

  2641. Amen.

  2642. Amen.

  2643. Amen.

  2644. Amen.

  2645. Amen.

  2646. Amen.

  2647. Amen.

  2648. Amen.

  2649. Amen.

  2650. Amen.
