  1. Our first reading is from Exodus 32 verses 1 to 14.

    Exodus 32:1–14

  2. So Aaron said to them, Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons and your daughters and bring them to me.

  3. So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.

  4. And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf.

  5. And they said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

  6. When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it.

  7. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.

  8. And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings.

  9. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

  10. And the Lord says to Moses, Go down, for your people whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.

  11. They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them.

  12. They have made themselves a golden calf and have worshipped it and sacrificed to it and said,

  13. These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

  14. And the Lord said to Moses, I have seen this people and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

  15. Now therefore let me alone that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them in order that I may make a great nation of you.

  16. But Moses implored the Lord, his God, and said, O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people?

  17. Whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand.

  18. Why should the Egyptians say, with evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth?

  19. Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people.

  20. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self and said to them,

  21. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring and they shall inherit it forever.

  22. And the Lord relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.

  23. The next reading is from Exodus 33 verses 15 to 23.

    Exodus 33:15–23

  24. And he said to them, if your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.

  25. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people?

  26. Is it not in your going with us so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?

  27. And the Lord said to Moses, this very thing that you have spoken I will do.

  28. If you have found favor in my sight and I know by your name.

  29. Moses said, please show me your glory.

  30. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim you my name, the Lord.

  31. And I will be gracious to you, to whom I will be gracious.

  32. And I will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  33. But, he said, you cannot see my face.

  34. For man shall not see me and live.

  35. And the Lord said, behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock.

  36. And while my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock.

  37. And I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

  38. Then I will take away my hand and you shall see my back.

  39. But my face shall not be seen.

  40. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord.

  41. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed,

  42. The Lord, the Lord, our God merciful and gracious, slow to anger,

  43. and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

  44. keeping steadfast love for thousands,

  45. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  46. but whom will by no means clear the guilty,

  47. visiting the iniquity of the fathers and the children and the children's children,

  48. the third and fourth generation.

  49. And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshipped.

  50. And he said,

  51. If now I have found favour in your sight, O Lord,

  52. please let the Lord go in the midst of us.

  53. For it is a stiff-necked people,

  54. and pardon our iniquity and our sin.

  55. Good morning, everyone.

  56. Will you please pray with me as we come to God's word?

  57. Father, I pray that through your word,

  58. you would convince each of our hearts to voluntarily come to you

  59. and lay all the idols at your feet,

  60. so that you might fill us with yourself.

  61. So please speak to us now.

  62. Give us minds and hearts ready to receive your word.

  63. In Jesus' name I pray.

  64. Amen.

  65. Well, if a friend asked you to describe God's character,

  66. I wonder what adjectives you would use.

  67. I'm guessing loving would rightly come to mind.

  68. Compassionate, holy, patient, wise.

  69. No doubt you can think of lots more descriptions.

  70. We can understand the appeal of these qualities, can't we?

  71. Because when we see it in human beings,

  72. just a faint reflection of it,

  73. we can see the goodness of these qualities.

  74. I think we could just imagine God on a greater scale.

  75. He's all wise.

  76. He's all wise.

  77. He's all patient.

  78. We are going to rush the ending of Exodus today.

  79. But I was trying to think,

  80. what's going to help us tie all this together?

  81. And I think it's the description of God that we find here in Exodus,

  82. that God is jealous.

  83. How do you react to that?

  84. God is jealous.

  85. It feels unworthy to describe God that way, isn't it?

  86. I wonder if you're a bit repulsed.

  87. I'd be surprised if you're not,

  88. because jealousy is pretty awful in human beings.

  89. This is where God is so different from us.

  90. Tim Keller describes jealousy as love-fighting,

  91. extinction.

  92. It's the fear of that love relationship being lost,

  93. that love turns to anger to keep it.

  94. Where a man's love for a woman,

  95. when she's leaving him,

  96. it's threatened,

  97. and that love turns to anger,

  98. even to the point of murder.

  99. It's awful in human beings.

  100. Or a friend.

  101. Someone,

  102. a friend you really love,

  103. starts spending time with someone else,

  104. and starts confiding in someone else,

  105. and there's something in you that's like,

  106. I don't want to share.

  107. It's petty.

  108. It's insecure.

  109. Like, in people,

  110. jealousy is

  111. unattractive,

  112. and

  113. deadly.

  114. So it's no wonder,

  115. I think,

  116. that we stumble over this description of God,

  117. that God is jealous.

  118. But,

  119. it's in the middle of the Ten Commandments,

  120. where God reveals

  121. his character.

  122. We can't say that his jealousy

  123. is just this obscure part of Scripture,

  124. some periphery description.

  125. It's right there in the middle.

  126. I, the Lord your God,

  127. am a jealous God.

  128. It's the reason for the first two commandments.

  129. You shall have no other gods

  130. beside me.

  131. You shall make no images,

  132. no created thing.

  133. He's jealous that he has

  134. all Israel's

  135. devotion.

  136. Let's not think

  137. this is just an Old Testament description.

  138. I don't know what you would describe this,

  139. but jealous,

  140. when Jesus says this in Luke 14.

  141. If anyone comes to me,

  142. and does not hate his own father,

  143. and mother,

  144. and wife,

  145. and children,

  146. and brothers,

  147. and sisters,

  148. yes,

  149. even his own life,

  150. he cannot be my disciple.

  151. He wants all of us.

  152. Compared to any other allegiance,

  153. he's jealous to have

  154. all of us.

  155. I'm wondering,

  156. if instead of being repulsed

  157. by this description,

  158. can we find the jealousy of God

  159. beautiful?

  160. I think we can.

  161. Obviously,

  162. I wouldn't be preaching on it

  163. if I didn't.

  164. It's beautiful in God,

  165. awful in human beings,

  166. but it's such good news in God.

  167. I think we can start to see

  168. if we reflect a bit

  169. on what we've seen

  170. in this series in Exodus.

  171. What kind of relationship

  172. does Yahweh want

  173. with his saved people?

  174. We've seen his goal

  175. of redeeming his people

  176. repeated,

  177. to bring you to myself.

  178. Get out of slavery

  179. so that you can serve me.

  180. That's his goal.

  181. We've seen the kind of relationship

  182. in the wilderness experience.

  183. He's not some distant God.

  184. He's present.

  185. He's a companion.

  186. He's leading them.

  187. He's speaking to them.

  188. We've seen the binding nature

  189. of the relationship.

  190. He wants covenant

  191. with his people.

  192. It's binding.

  193. That's the kind of relationship.

  194. We've seen the law.

  195. The law is not a new slavery.

  196. It's clear directions

  197. of how Israel could please God.

  198. Anyone know the movie

  199. Princess Bride?

  200. Okay.

  201. All right.

  202. Good.

  203. You better.

  204. That's your homework

  205. if you don't.

  206. But does anyone remember

  207. Wesley's repeated expression

  208. of love for Buttercup?

  209. Thank you.

  210. Yes.

  211. We've got some true fans here.

  212. As you wish.

  213. That's his expression of love.

  214. As you wish.

  215. That's what we do, isn't it?

  216. Someone we love.

  217. Someone we esteem.

  218. We work out what pleases them

  219. and we give our will to them

  220. to please them as you wish.

  221. And it doesn't feel like

  222. they're controlling us

  223. because our pleasure

  224. is in pleasing them.

  225. That's what the law is.

  226. Israel, here's how you can please me.

  227. He hasn't left them guessing

  228. how to relate.

  229. The law is good.

  230. That's the kind of relationship

  231. he wants.

  232. To know how they can please God.

  233. And last week,

  234. we've seen the kind of relationship

  235. he wants in the tabernacle.

  236. He wants to be present.

  237. He wants to be close.

  238. He wants to make a home

  239. with his people.

  240. He wants to be known.

  241. He wants his people

  242. to have access,

  243. intimacy.

  244. So when God says,

  245. I am a jealous God,

  246. I must be your priority.

  247. I must be the centre

  248. of your life.

  249. I will not let you put anything,

  250. anyone,

  251. to be more important than me.

  252. He's saying what every married person

  253. expects and desires

  254. from their spouse.

  255. That's the kind of relationship

  256. God wants with his people.

  257. Exclusive.

  258. Intimate.

  259. Very little has been said

  260. about sin so far in Exodus.

  261. We're up to chapter 32.

  262. Very little has been said

  263. about sin.

  264. But in chapter 32,

  265. sin is mentioned 11 times.

  266. I'm having three weeks off

  267. over Christmas

  268. and I'm not expecting

  269. to come back

  270. and you all kind of go,

  271. we lost confidence

  272. that you're coming back.

  273. Here,

  274. 40 days.

  275. 40 days.

  276. And Israel,

  277. having heard God's voice,

  278. they're still around Mount Sinai.

  279. They haven't moved.

  280. They still see the pillar of cloud

  281. and the fire.

  282. Within 40 days,

  283. they come to Aaron

  284. and say,

  285. make us gods.

  286. I can't believe Aaron

  287. led them into,

  288. this is Aaron.

  289. Aaron was the spokesperson

  290. to Pharaoh.

  291. He was instrumental

  292. in their freedom.

  293. He ate and drank

  294. in the covenant ceremony.

  295. He ate and drank with God.

  296. He's about to be high priest.

  297. Aaron and all the people

  298. so quickly

  299. turned to idols.

  300. I think it's to show us

  301. the human condition.

  302. So quick

  303. to turn to idols.

  304. And we see it played out

  305. in the rest of Israel's history.

  306. That's the human condition.

  307. John Calvin

  308. described a human heart

  309. like this.

  310. The human heart

  311. is a perpetual

  312. idol factory.

  313. I think of it sometimes

  314. like whack-a-mole.

  315. I don't know if you know the game.

  316. You probably don't.

  317. It's a bit of a weird game.

  318. Whack-a-mole.

  319. Arcade.

  320. When I was younger,

  321. something,

  322. an idol pops up,

  323. you whack it,

  324. another one,

  325. another three pop up.

  326. Our hearts are just

  327. a perpetual

  328. idol factory.

  329. So what is an idol?

  330. They take the gold jewelry.

  331. There's nothing wrong

  332. with the gold jewelry.

  333. That was a gift

  334. from their redeemer.

  335. They take a good gift

  336. and they created

  337. with their own hands

  338. an image

  339. to make it

  340. their top priority.

  341. To make it

  342. the meaning of their life.

  343. The true source

  344. of their joy.

  345. These are your gods,

  346. O Israel,

  347. who brought you

  348. out of the land

  349. of Egypt.

  350. It's a good gift

  351. but it's

  352. something made

  353. by human beings

  354. that replaces God

  355. as top priority.

  356. Redefining them even.

  357. This is who we are now.

  358. I doubt

  359. it felt wrong

  360. when they're doing it.

  361. I reckon if we were there,

  362. they're dancing

  363. around this thing.

  364. If you were to ask them,

  365. they probably felt,

  366. they would have said,

  367. I feel at peace

  368. with this decision.

  369. It created

  370. a sense of community.

  371. It gave them

  372. an identity.

  373. This is our story now.

  374. This is

  375. who we are now.

  376. It gave them meaning.

  377. They could see it.

  378. They could sense it.

  379. I think it's the kind

  380. of justifications

  381. I give

  382. to all sorts of things

  383. when I make it

  384. more important to God.

  385. It gives me peace.

  386. It gives me pleasure.

  387. It doesn't feel wrong.

  388. Others are doing it.

  389. So why is it so wrong?

  390. Why is idolatry

  391. so wrong?

  392. Why is it so wrong?

  393. Why is it so wrong?

  394. Why is it so wrong?

  395. Why is it so wrong?

  396. Why is it so wrong?

  397. Why is it so wrong?

  398. If you picture

  399. a marriage ceremony,

  400. it's a really profound

  401. expression of love,

  402. isn't it,

  403. when the husband

  404. and wife

  405. look at each other

  406. in the eyes

  407. and say,

  408. with all that I am

  409. and all that I have,

  410. I honour you.

  411. Can you hear how

  412. either we're playing

  413. word games there

  414. or we all know

  415. that's love?

  416. With all that I am

  417. and all that I have,

  418. I honour you.

  419. Is that word games?

  420. I don't think so.

  421. That's love, isn't it?

  422. It's exclusive.

  423. It's everything.

  424. It's exclusive.

  425. It's exclusive.

  426. And it's destructive

  427. when something else

  428. takes the priority

  429. in a marriage.

  430. Even at a human level,

  431. think of what can unravel

  432. a human marriage.

  433. It's not always

  434. really awful things.

  435. It's not always adultery.

  436. It's not always

  437. domestic violence.

  438. Sometimes it's good things

  439. just taking priority.

  440. Can't a wife feel

  441. so alone

  442. when the husband

  443. is just obsessed

  444. with the job

  445. or obsessed

  446. with his friends?

  447. It can be a good thing

  448. that

  449. just gets

  450. distance

  451. in the relationship.

  452. It can be a good thing.

  453. Even children.

  454. Where a husband

  455. and later in life

  456. go,

  457. we've got nothing

  458. to talk about.

  459. The children

  460. became everything.

  461. Even good things

  462. when they take priority

  463. over the spouse

  464. can unravel.

  465. It violates

  466. that expression

  467. of love

  468. with all that I am

  469. and all that I have

  470. I honour you.

  471. And it's destructive.

  472. And I think

  473. that's a small taste

  474. of the horror

  475. of the golden calf.

  476. God wants

  477. an exclusive

  478. all-consuming

  479. relationship

  480. and when

  481. something else

  482. comes in

  483. and takes

  484. central place

  485. it's spiritual

  486. adultery.

  487. It's giving

  488. to something else

  489. what belongs

  490. only to God.

  491. And here we see

  492. the problem

  493. that idolatry

  494. creates

  495. because a jealous

  496. God

  497. who wants

  498. all of us

  499. idolatry

  500. provokes

  501. him to

  502. anger

  503. to wrath.

  504. Chapter 32

  505. verse 10

  506. he says to

  507. Moses

  508. let me alone

  509. that my wrath

  510. may burn

  511. hot against

  512. them

  513. and I may

  514. consume

  515. them

  516. in order

  517. that I may

  518. make a great

  519. nation of you.

  520. He's ready

  521. to

  522. start again

  523. with Moses.

  524. Idolatry

  525. provokes

  526. a jealous

  527. God

  528. to wrath.

  529. He's so

  530. committed

  531. to an

  532. exclusive

  533. love

  534. relationship

  535. he's angry

  536. when we

  537. turn away

  538. from him.

  539. Isn't that

  540. the first

  541. three chapters

  542. of Romans?

  543. The problem

  544. is the

  545. wrath

  546. of God.

  547. here in

  548. Exodus

  549. we see

  550. God's

  551. solution

  552. but it's

  553. only a

  554. pattern.

  555. Moses

  556. is a

  557. pattern

  558. of what

  559. Jesus

  560. would

  561. actually

  562. accomplish.

  563. How

  564. is the

  565. wrath

  566. of God

  567. removed?

  568. Look at

  569. verse 14

  570. of chapter

  571. 32

  572. and the

  573. Lord

  574. relented

  575. from the

  576. disaster

  577. that he's

  578. spoken

  579. of bringing

  580. on his

  581. people.

  582. That word

  583. relented

  584. is about

  585. taking away

  586. his anger.

  587. He only

  588. gives a

  589. partial

  590. judgment.

  591. He doesn't

  592. start again

  593. with Moses

  594. and what

  595. averts

  596. God's

  597. wrath?

  598. Did the

  599. people make

  600. it up

  601. to God?

  602. No.

  603. What

  604. averted

  605. God's

  606. wrath

  607. was

  608. Moses.

  609. one

  610. righteous

  611. man

  612. interceding

  613. for the

  614. people.

  615. His

  616. prayer

  617. interceding

  618. for his

  619. people.

  620. That's

  621. what gets

  622. rid of

  623. the wrath

  624. of God.

  625. A

  626. mediator

  627. turning

  628. away

  629. God's

  630. wrath.

  631. I don't

  632. know about

  633. you but

  634. I find

  635. that really

  636. humbling

  637. because when

  638. I look at

  639. the reason

  640. why God

  641. has saved

  642. me,

  643. it has

  644. nothing

  645. to do

  646. with

  647. me.

  648. It has

  649. everything

  650. to do

  651. with one

  652. righteous

  653. man

  654. interceding

  655. for me,

  656. interceding

  657. for us.

  658. But

  659. Moses is

  660. only a

  661. pattern.

  662. Moses

  663. could only

  664. wish that

  665. he could

  666. be blotted

  667. out of

  668. God's

  669. book,

  670. God's

  671. record of

  672. his people

  673. so that

  674. his people

  675. were forgiven.

  676. He could

  677. only wish

  678. he was

  679. blotted

  680. out.

  681. He says

  682. that

  683. perhaps

  684. I can

  685. make

  686. atonement

  687. for your

  688. sin.

  689. He's

  690. just a

  691. pattern.

  692. There's

  693. a tension

  694. left in

  695. Exodus

  696. that isn't

  697. resolved

  698. until Jesus

  699. comes.

  700. There's

  701. no

  702. perhaps

  703. anymore.

  704. Romans

  705. 3.25

  706. Christ

  707. Jesus

  708. whom

  709. God

  710. put

  711. forward

  712. as a

  713. propitiation

  714. by his

  715. blood

  716. to be

  717. received

  718. by faith.

  719. It's

  720. not the

  721. most

  722. elegant

  723. word

  724. propitiation

  725. I don't

  726. think

  727. but we

  728. should

  729. love

  730. that

  731. word.

  732. It

  733. means

  734. turning

  735. God's

  736. wrath

  737. away

  738. from

  739. us.

  740. 1

  741. John

  742. 2

  743. If

  744. anyone

  745. does

  746. sin

  747. we

  748. have

  749. an

  750. advocate

  751. with

  752. the

  753. father

  754. Jesus

  755. Christ

  756. the

  757. righteous

  758. one

  759. he

  760. is

  761. the

  762. propitiation

  763. for our

  764. sins.

  765. Or

  766. 1

  767. John

  768. 4

  769. is

  770. the

  771. definition

  772. of

  773. love.

  774. This

  775. is

  776. love.

  777. Not

  778. that we

  779. love

  780. God

  781. but

  782. that

  783. he

  784. loved

  785. us

  786. and

  787. sent

  788. his

  789. son

  790. to

  791. be

  792. the

  793. propitiation

  794. for

  795. our

  796. sins.

  797. Moses

  798. could

  799. only

  800. wish

  801. he could

  802. delay

  803. it

  804. but

  805. Jesus

  806. actually

  807. forever

  808. takes

  809. away

  810. the

  811. wrath

  812. of

  813. God

  814. because

  815. he

  816. took

  817. it.

  818. He

  819. drank

  820. the

  821. cup

  822. of

  823. the

  824. wrath

  825. of

  826. God

  827. to

  828. its

  829. dregs.

  830. It's

  831. gone.

  832. We

  833. see the

  834. pattern

  835. here of

  836. Moses

  837. taking

  838. away

  839. the

  840. wrath

  841. fulfilled

  842. in

  843. the

  844. Lord

  845. Jesus.

  846. But we

  847. also see

  848. here

  849. this

  850. awful

  851. episode

  852. of

  853. the

  854. golden

  855. calf

  856. leads

  857. to

  858. a

  859. really

  860. profound

  861. beautiful

  862. moment.

  863. One of

  864. the

  865. closest

  866. encounters

  867. between

  868. God

  869. and

  870. a

  871. human

  872. being.

  873. Moses

  874. doesn't

  875. seem

  876. to see

  877. God's

  878. jealousy

  879. as

  880. dangerous.

  881. He

  882. seems

  883. to lean

  884. into

  885. it.

  886. He

  887. wants

  888. to get

  889. closer.

  890. He

  891. wants

  892. more.

  893. What

  894. he

  895. prays

  896. for

  897. is

  898. surprising

  899. in

  900. chapter

  901. 33.

  902. The

  903. Lord

  904. says,

  905. okay,

  906. because of

  907. what you've

  908. done,

  909. I will

  910. still

  911. drive out

  912. the

  913. Canaanites.

  914. I

  915. will

  916. give

  917. you

  918. the

  919. land

  920. flowing

  921. with

  922. milk

  923. and

  924. honey,

  925. but I'm

  926. not

  927. going

  928. to

  929. go

  930. with

  931. you.

  932. My

  933. presence

  934. won't

  935. go

  936. with

  937. you.

  938. I

  939. think

  940. that's

  941. most

  942. people's

  943. dream

  944. religion.

  945. I'm

  946. going to

  947. give

  948. you

  949. power

  950. over

  951. your

  952. opponents.

  953. I'm

  954. going to

  955. give

  956. you

  957. prosperity,

  958. milk

  959. and

  960. honey,

  961. the

  962. land.

  963. I'm

  964. going to

  965. give

  966. you

  967. comfort.

  968. Moses

  969. is

  970. mourning.

  971. No,

  972. don't

  973. send us.

  974. That's

  975. not

  976. life.

  977. That's

  978. not

  979. glory.

  980. If

  981. your

  982. presence

  983. doesn't

  984. come with

  985. us,

  986. don't

  987. send

  988. us.

  989. Moses

  990. understands

  991. what

  992. satisfies

  993. the human

  994. soul.

  995. as

  996. Bo

  997. opened

  998. this

  999. morning.

  1000. Moses

  1001. understood

  1002. that it's

  1003. not

  1004. treating

  1005. God as

  1006. useful to

  1007. get

  1008. something

  1009. else.

  1010. We

  1011. need

  1012. your

  1013. presence.

  1014. If a

  1015. man

  1016. called

  1017. off an

  1018. engagement

  1019. with a

  1020. woman when

  1021. he found

  1022. out that

  1023. she

  1024. all

  1025. her

  1026. riches

  1027. were

  1028. gone

  1029. and

  1030. she's

  1031. in

  1032. debt

  1033. and

  1034. he's

  1035. like,

  1036. oh,

  1037. well,

  1038. let's

  1039. just call

  1040. it off

  1041. then.

  1042. How

  1043. would

  1044. she

  1045. feel?

  1046. Gutted,

  1047. right?

  1048. He just

  1049. loved me

  1050. for my

  1051. money.

  1052. Isn't

  1053. that how

  1054. we treat

  1055. God?

  1056. When

  1057. things

  1058. aren't

  1059. going

  1060. well,

  1061. God

  1062. isn't

  1063. useful

  1064. to some

  1065. other

  1066. end.

  1067. Moses

  1068. understands

  1069. that God's

  1070. presence

  1071. satisfies

  1072. the human

  1073. soul.

  1074. Otherwise,

  1075. his prayer,

  1076. I don't

  1077. know,

  1078. it doesn't

  1079. make sense

  1080. otherwise.

  1081. Moses

  1082. is treating

  1083. God as

  1084. beautiful for

  1085. his own

  1086. sake.

  1087. That's

  1088. why he

  1089. prays,

  1090. show me

  1091. your

  1092. glory.

  1093. He

  1094. wants to

  1095. see more

  1096. of this

  1097. God.

  1098. God.

  1099. When we

  1100. find something

  1101. beautiful,

  1102. most people

  1103. find,

  1104. I think

  1105. all people

  1106. find the

  1107. ocean,

  1108. right?

  1109. You look

  1110. at the

  1111. ocean,

  1112. this vast

  1113. beautiful

  1114. sight,

  1115. or we

  1116. go to the

  1117. blue

  1118. mountains and

  1119. look at

  1120. those

  1121. Kenyans.

  1122. You're not

  1123. thinking,

  1124. what can I

  1125. get out of

  1126. this?

  1127. You're just

  1128. staring at it

  1129. because it's

  1130. just so

  1131. beautiful for

  1132. its own

  1133. sake.

  1134. But when you

  1135. find something

  1136. beautiful,

  1137. it's not just

  1138. pleasure in it

  1139. for its own

  1140. sake, but it

  1141. also just

  1142. somehow pushes

  1143. you out of

  1144. yourself.

  1145. It fills

  1146. life with

  1147. meaning,

  1148. doesn't it?

  1149. It's pleasurable

  1150. for its own

  1151. sake.

  1152. It's not just

  1153. useful, and

  1154. it just

  1155. makes life

  1156. meaningful.

  1157. That's what

  1158. beautiful things

  1159. do.

  1160. And I think

  1161. that's what

  1162. Moses is

  1163. praying for

  1164. here.

  1165. He

  1166. understands

  1167. that God

  1168. himself is

  1169. what satisfies

  1170. the human

  1171. soul, as

  1172. beautiful, not

  1173. just useful.

  1174. He's experienced

  1175. it.

  1176. Every time he

  1177. talked to God

  1178. face to face,

  1179. he was glowing.

  1180. It talks

  1181. about his

  1182. face was

  1183. beaming

  1184. light.

  1185. He's

  1186. experienced

  1187. it.

  1188. He

  1189. understands

  1190. that God's

  1191. jealousy to

  1192. be exclusively

  1193. loved and

  1194. enjoyed for

  1195. his own

  1196. sake is not

  1197. a bad

  1198. thing.

  1199. That fills

  1200. the human

  1201. soul.

  1202. nothing else

  1203. can satisfy

  1204. what we

  1205. were made

  1206. for than

  1207. to have

  1208. the blazing

  1209. glory of

  1210. the universe

  1211. look at

  1212. you and

  1213. go, I

  1214. want you,

  1215. I invite

  1216. you in,

  1217. look at

  1218. me and

  1219. enjoy me.

  1220. God's

  1221. jealousy to

  1222. be exclusively

  1223. loved is

  1224. his

  1225. commitment

  1226. to satisfy

  1227. our souls

  1228. with

  1229. himself.

  1230. the glory

  1231. Moses saw

  1232. was only

  1233. a taste

  1234. of what

  1235. you and

  1236. I get

  1237. to see

  1238. today.

  1239. What did

  1240. Moses see?

  1241. He saw

  1242. words.

  1243. I know

  1244. that kind of

  1245. doesn't

  1246. make sense

  1247. but when

  1248. the Lord

  1249. had all

  1250. his goodness

  1251. pass in

  1252. front of

  1253. him,

  1254. what we're

  1255. told is,

  1256. whatever that

  1257. experience was,

  1258. what we're

  1259. told repeatedly

  1260. is the

  1261. Lord

  1262. proclaimed

  1263. the name

  1264. of the

  1265. Lord.

  1266. He

  1267. proclaimed.

  1268. We have

  1269. access to

  1270. his glory

  1271. in his

  1272. word.

  1273. The

  1274. Lord,

  1275. the

  1276. Lord,

  1277. a God

  1278. merciful and

  1279. gracious,

  1280. slow to

  1281. anger,

  1282. and

  1283. abounding

  1284. in

  1285. steadfast

  1286. love and

  1287. faithfulness,

  1288. keeping

  1289. steadfast

  1290. love to

  1291. thousands,

  1292. and

  1293. forgiving

  1294. iniquity

  1295. and

  1296. transgression

  1297. and sin,

  1298. but who

  1299. will by

  1300. no means

  1301. clear the

  1302. guilty.

  1303. What

  1304. Moses saw

  1305. is that

  1306. God is

  1307. all

  1308. forgiving.

  1309. That

  1310. gives us

  1311. confidence

  1312. to come

  1313. to him.

  1314. All

  1315. three words

  1316. for sin

  1317. are mentioned.

  1318. transgression,

  1319. iniquity,

  1320. and sin.

  1321. I hope

  1322. that gives

  1323. you confidence

  1324. that there

  1325. is no

  1326. sin that

  1327. he can't

  1328. forgive.

  1329. He's

  1330. trying to

  1331. say it as

  1332. clearly as

  1333. he can to

  1334. assure us

  1335. he's abounding

  1336. in forgiveness.

  1337. He's the

  1338. self-sufficient

  1339. flame.

  1340. I'll be

  1341. gracious to

  1342. whom I'll

  1343. be gracious.

  1344. He's

  1345. abounding.

  1346. There's

  1347. no limit.

  1348. All

  1349. sin,

  1350. it gives

  1351. us confidence

  1352. to come

  1353. to him,

  1354. to draw

  1355. near.

  1356. But

  1357. I'm sure

  1358. you notice

  1359. the tension

  1360. here.

  1361. He won't

  1362. clear the

  1363. guilty.

  1364. What

  1365. Moses saw

  1366. is this

  1367. tension,

  1368. all his

  1369. goodness.

  1370. He's

  1371. all

  1372. forgiving,

  1373. but he

  1374. can't

  1375. just be

  1376. a

  1377. president,

  1378. give a

  1379. presidential

  1380. pardon

  1381. that

  1382. removes

  1383. all the

  1384. guilt and

  1385. no

  1386. consequences.

  1387. He can't

  1388. do that.

  1389. He's

  1390. got to

  1391. be just.

  1392. There's a

  1393. tension here

  1394. that isn't

  1395. resolved.

  1396. Again,

  1397. until we

  1398. get to

  1399. the Lord

  1400. Jesus

  1401. Christ.

  1402. He only

  1403. saw his

  1404. back,

  1405. Moses.

  1406. It was a

  1407. faint outline.

  1408. We get to

  1409. look at his

  1410. face.

  1411. when we

  1412. look at

  1413. the cross.

  1414. There we

  1415. see at

  1416. the cross

  1417. all God's

  1418. jealousy.

  1419. All that

  1420. wrath that

  1421. poured out

  1422. on his

  1423. son.

  1424. And when

  1425. we look at

  1426. the cross,

  1427. we see the

  1428. lengths he

  1429. would go to

  1430. to possess

  1431. us, to

  1432. have our

  1433. heart.

  1434. That's a

  1435. gracious God

  1436. who would

  1437. go to

  1438. that length

  1439. to put up

  1440. with my

  1441. idols so

  1442. that he

  1443. could satisfy

  1444. my soul

  1445. with himself,

  1446. that he

  1447. would even

  1448. send his

  1449. son to

  1450. the cross.

  1451. he's that

  1452. committed to

  1453. be present.

  1454. He's that

  1455. committed to

  1456. possess all

  1457. of our

  1458. hearts.

  1459. And so I

  1460. think it

  1461. just calls

  1462. us to

  1463. not be,

  1464. not cling

  1465. to our

  1466. idols.

  1467. idols.

  1468. The cross

  1469. attracts us

  1470. that we

  1471. can bring

  1472. our idols

  1473. to him

  1474. and not

  1475. be afraid

  1476. that he

  1477. will reject

  1478. us.

  1479. All his

  1480. wrath has

  1481. already been

  1482. taken away

  1483. in his

  1484. son.

  1485. It

  1486. attracts us

  1487. because

  1488. whatever idol

  1489. you're clinging

  1490. to,

  1491. whatever is

  1492. more important

  1493. to you than

  1494. God,

  1495. it will

  1496. fade.

  1497. it can't

  1498. last.

  1499. It

  1500. destroys

  1501. intimacy

  1502. with God,

  1503. it destroys

  1504. marriages,

  1505. it destroys

  1506. churches,

  1507. it destroys

  1508. relationships.

  1509. Don't hang

  1510. on to that.

  1511. Come to

  1512. the cross

  1513. and be

  1514. satisfied

  1515. in him.

  1516. Jealousy

  1517. of God

  1518. is not

  1519. repulsive.

  1520. It's

  1521. beautiful

  1522. because he

  1523. wants us

  1524. to be

  1525. satisfied

  1526. in him.

  1527. And he

  1528. sent his

  1529. son to

  1530. achieve

  1531. that.

  1532. Will you

  1533. pray with

  1534. me?

  1535. Let's

  1536. pray.

  1537. Father,

  1538. we're not

  1539. as sorry

  1540. as we

  1541. should be

  1542. for

  1543. clinging

  1544. on to

  1545. created

  1546. things and

  1547. making them

  1548. the centre

  1549. of our

  1550. life

  1551. as we

  1552. ought to.

  1553. Lord,

  1554. I pray

  1555. that you

  1556. would

  1557. loosen

  1558. our

  1559. attraction

  1560. to

  1561. whatever

  1562. that

  1563. important

  1564. thing

  1565. is

  1566. by the

  1567. cross

  1568. of your

  1569. son,

  1570. that you

  1571. would

  1572. convince

  1573. our

  1574. hearts

  1575. that what

  1576. we're

  1577. looking for

  1578. in

  1579. created

  1580. things

  1581. is

  1582. actually

  1583. found

  1584. in you.

  1585. Lord,

  1586. only you

  1587. can move

  1588. our hearts

  1589. to that.

  1590. I pray

  1591. for each

  1592. one of

  1593. us and

  1594. I pray

  1595. as a

  1596. church

  1597. that you

  1598. would

  1599. continually

  1600. break down

  1601. idols so

  1602. that we

  1603. can have

  1604. you as

  1605. our

  1606. lasting

  1607. treasure.

  1608. Lord,

  1609. thank you

  1610. for the

  1611. hope that

  1612. we will

  1613. see you

  1614. one day

  1615. face to

  1616. face.

  1617. face.

  1618. I pray

  1619. that that

  1620. hope will

  1621. help us

  1622. get ready

  1623. for that

  1624. day.

  1625. I pray

  1626. this in

  1627. Jesus'

  1628. name.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.
