  1. Our reading this morning is from Hebrews chapter 3, verses 1 through 6.

    Hebrews 3:1–6

  2. Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle

  3. and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as

  4. Moses also was faithful in all God's house.

  5. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, as much more glory as the

  6. builder of a house has more honour than the house itself.

  7. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

  8. Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that

  9. were to be spoken later.

  10. But Christ is faithful over God's house as a son, and we are his house, if indeed we hold

  11. fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

  12. The word of the Lord.

  13. Well, good morning, everyone.

  14. For those who don't know me, my name's David, and I'm a sort of part-timer here.

  15. Well, I am.

  16. Sort of.

  17. Yeah.

  18. I'm actually not sure how to introduce myself these days.

  19. All right.

  20. Into God's word.

  21. It's really common, I think, for people in tough circumstances.

  22. That is, when life's confusing, when life's hard, sometimes when life's out of control,

  23. really far removed from what we'd consider normal.

  24. It's common for people in those sort of circumstances to look back to familiar people and things.

  25. Things that, in their mind, were lodged in there, but actually come to the surface in tough times and

  26. remind them or become the indicators that, well, life was secure.

  27. Life was normal.

  28. Everything was well in the world back then.

  29. And so they sort of come to the surface.

  30. It's a little bit like, in computer terms, returning to default settings.

  31. Things that, as I say, buried in our hearts and minds, oftentimes we don't even know they exist

  32. until tough circumstances trigger the reset.

  33. For example, a child, a lump of a child, struck down by illness or some other trauma

  34. might actually go back to sucking their thumb or cuddling a soft toy that they haven't done for years

  35. because it's an indication that, you know, life is okay.

  36. We saw during the COVID pandemic some of the random things adults did.

  37. Toilet paper, for goodness sake.

  38. Somehow or other, for so many people, that became the indicator that life was going to be okay.

  39. It was random, but it was worth fighting over, apparently.

  40. But even other things, like some people would go and do religious things that hadn't done since childhood,

  41. maybe offer a prayer or actually go and sit in a church building somewhere.

  42. Again, where does that come from?

  43. The other big thing during the COVID pandemic was just that demand to be able to see family members,

  44. visit them freely.

  45. And that from people who often would have been careless about those same family members.

  46. Prior to COVID.

  47. It's that sort of thing, I think, that helps us understand what's going on behind the scenes here in this letter to the Hebrew.

  48. It seems like many Christians to whom the letter to the Hebrews was addressed were doing the same sort of thing.

  49. When they first encountered Jesus, they identified really strongly with him.

  50. They were totally thankful for what he had done for them.

  51. They were excited for the fresh start they had in him based on grace alone.

  52. And with total conviction, they turned away from their old Jewish religion and Jewish religious practices,

  53. which was all about priests and sacrifices and celebrating special religious days and special religious holidays.

  54. They had gladly turned away from that saying something far, far better in Jesus.

  55. But it seems like when commitment to Jesus got really tough,

  56. and as their daily lives felt more and more out of control,

  57. they found themselves excluded from their family.

  58. They found themselves excluded from the local synagogue and oftentimes from the local community even.

  59. And then on top of that, they were starting to experience in very real terms persecution from the Roman Empire, the Roman authorities.

  60. And there's all these things built up on them and unsettled them.

  61. It seems like they were tempted to default back to the old, familiar, comforting Jewish religious practices.

  62. It feels normal again.

  63. And as they did that, then they also had to convince themselves that the Jewish religion,

  64. which after all had served their ancestors well for centuries,

  65. and after all there was a lot of overlap with Christianity,

  66. they had to convince themselves that there wasn't really that much difference.

  67. It was a difference of emphasis, perhaps.

  68. And on top of that, they would have the added bonus of renewed acceptance with family in the synagogue,

  69. their local community.

  70. And they would be tolerated once again.

  71. They'd be free from persecution because the Roman Empire tolerated the Jewish religion at that stage.

  72. So all of that means the main challenge of the letter to the Hebrews is this.

  73. Don't allow yourself to drift away from Jesus because serving him in a hostile world is really hard.

  74. It's too hard.

  75. And repeatedly, we've seen it several times already, and we're only in chapter 3.

  76. Repeatedly, the writer is saying, think deeply and carefully about Jesus.

  77. Pay attention to what he says.

  78. Consider him.

  79. Reflect upon him.

  80. Meditate on who Jesus is and what he has done.

  81. Think about what drew you to Jesus in the first place.

  82. Put serious time into, and this isn't superannuation ad, comparing the two.

  83. What the old Jewish religious practices offer you and what Jesus offers you.

  84. Both offered a pathway to salvation and heaven.

  85. But when you look at it, the writer's saying, you'll see that the pathways, the differences, are neither minor nor cosmetic, but they're fundamental.

  86. So consider Jesus.

  87. Fill your mind with who he is.

  88. Fill your mind with what he has done uniquely to make you acceptable before God and qualify you for a place in heaven.

  89. And if you do that, the writer's saying, if you do that constantly, then you'll find you've got a whole new perspective in any time of suffering.

  90. In any short term of suffering.

  91. Because, and this is the first main point I want to make, moving us into the chapter today.

  92. Because it's only as we understand who Jesus is, that we understand who we are in him.

  93. So this is really, the first point is just all verse 1, and then the second point is verse 2 through to 6.

  94. You look at verse 1, it's introduced by a connecting word, therefore.

  95. That tells us that the writer is now summing up the argument in chapter 1 and 2.

  96. And we've seen so far in the three sermons we've had so far that every encouragement by the writer here for people to persevere with Jesus,

  97. every encouragement is focused on who Jesus is.

  98. And then the direct consequences for believers, those who are united to him.

  99. Because Jesus is this, then we're that as we're united to him.

  100. Now here in verse 1, Jesus is described in an unusual term called the apostle of our confession.

  101. It's the only place where Jesus in the Bible is described as an apostle.

  102. And the word itself isn't too fancy.

  103. It's just one who's been commissioned, called and commissioned, or set apart for a unique task.

  104. In this case, we've seen in chapter 1 and 2, that Jesus was called and commissioned, set apart,

  105. come into the world for the unique task for which he was uniquely equipped or credentialed,

  106. that of effecting or implementing God's salvation plan in history.

  107. And so, like the prophets before him, Jesus comes into our world speaking God's word to God's people.

  108. Similarity.

  109. But, when you consider Jesus, you realize that he quickly redefines the category of prophet.

  110. Being God, we're told in chapter 1, Jesus spoke with a unique clarity.

  111. Who else knows God's mind better than God himself?

  112. And he spoke, Jesus spoke with a unique authority.

  113. And we saw in chapter 2, since he came in, since he is God, come into the world in true human form like us,

  114. he also models or demonstrates how image bearers should live.

  115. He demonstrates the good life of obedience and worship, which God's image bearers were designed to live.

  116. And so, when you consider Jesus, yes, he's like the Old Testament prophets, but then you realize he's in a category by himself.

  117. He speaks with clarity and he speaks with authority, but even more important, his life was totally consistent with what he said.

  118. Unlike any other prophet before him.

  119. Jesus is also described in verse 1 as the high priest of our confession.

  120. Now, remember I said last week the priest has two main responsibilities.

  121. On the one hand, he has to offer appropriate sacrifices to deal with God's anger because his creatures had rebelled against him.

  122. And also then to deal with the guilt that comes as a natural consequence of that rebellion, the guilt of sin.

  123. So the priest had to offer sacrifices to deal with that.

  124. But he also had another important responsibility, as we talked about last week.

  125. He had to pray for God's people.

  126. And he had to pray for God's people because he, above all else, as a priest, would know, because he's in constant rubbing of it,

  127. people's natural inclination to continue rebelling against God,

  128. even when they're experiencing God's grace and forgiveness through sacrifice and restoration.

  129. The priest was meant to see how broken God's people were,

  130. and not just blandly offer a sacrifice, but actually pray for them.

  131. Priests were notorious for not doing either very well.

  132. Things haven't changed over the generations, have they?

  133. But again, you see, Jesus refines or redefines the category of priest

  134. because he perfectly fulfills both responsibilities.

  135. And he achieves, we're told in chapter 1,

  136. he achieves what not even the angels,

  137. with all their involvement over the generations in implementing God's plan in the world,

  138. Jesus achieves what they couldn't have done ever and didn't do ever.

  139. And so we got last week that Jesus is our trailblazer, our champion.

  140. And he cuts a nice, neat pathway through God's wrath,

  141. through the penalty of our sin and the guilt that comes with it,

  142. through our broken humanity,

  143. praying for us in our weaknesses and struggles.

  144. And he leads us down that pathway, as it says last week,

  145. that beautiful little phrase,

  146. taking many sons and daughters to glory,

  147. which is heaven, a place of blessing.

  148. Amen.

  149. For every relationship with God.

  150. So that's the summary.

  151. And the consequences out of that, verse 1,

  152. are just incredible.

  153. We have been reunited to God's forever family.

  154. That's where we were created to be, image bearers, Genesis 1 and 2.

  155. Pushed away by God because of rebellion.

  156. Now in Jesus, reunited.

  157. We're holy brothers and sisters of Jesus and of one another.

  158. Reunited to God's forever family and to every other believer.

  159. Reformatted.

  160. Holiness.

  161. We're reformatted for a life of obedience,

  162. as we were originally created to be but couldn't be.

  163. Now we can be in Jesus.

  164. Restored to the enjoyment of all God's blessings and privileges,

  165. which Jesus enjoys.

  166. fellow heirs.

  167. And not only that, but redirected to our heavenly calling.

  168. In other words,

  169. our orientation

  170. to life is so completely different now.

  171. Our motivation for living is so completely different now.

  172. We look ahead

  173. to that moment of glory.

  174. And that

  175. is what gives us the perspective

  176. and the confidence

  177. and the courage

  178. and the hope

  179. to live well now.

  180. No matter

  181. the cost.

  182. Here,

  183. we're part of the world

  184. that said in chapter 1

  185. that will be rolled up eventually.

  186. In other words,

  187. it's just temporary.

  188. Looks very permanent,

  189. but it's just temporary.

  190. But in Jesus,

  191. we're part of that world

  192. that will be forever.

  193. Forever.

  194. Hang in

  195. with what is lasting

  196. and hang in

  197. with the one

  198. who's leading you

  199. home to glory.

  200. So,

  201. the point's so clear.

  202. Jesus has done for you.

  203. He said to these guys

  204. that come out of the Jewish religious practices,

  205. he said,

  206. Jesus has actually done for you

  207. that which the Jewish religious system

  208. could never have done for you.

  209. And he's done all that

  210. at such huge cost to himself

  211. and you get it

  212. as a free gift

  213. of God's grace and mercy.

  214. So,

  215. no wonder,

  216. he says,

  217. for goodness sake,

  218. if only you would consider Jesus,

  219. that is,

  220. if only you would just stop

  221. and think carefully about Jesus,

  222. think deeply about who he is,

  223. think expansively

  224. about what he has done for you,

  225. just savor

  226. the privileges

  227. and the benefits

  228. that have come to you

  229. through Jesus.

  230. Then he's saying,

  231. I think you will realize

  232. just how insulting

  233. and offensive it would be

  234. to Jesus

  235. and to God

  236. to say,

  237. well,

  238. actually,

  239. sorry,

  240. Jesus,

  241. I'm just going to put you back on the shelf.

  242. I'm not ignoring you completely,

  243. but I'm going to just play you down

  244. because it's going to make my life

  245. a bit easier.

  246. And isn't that what we do

  247. when the push comes to shove?

  248. That's the decision we make.

  249. If I identify with Jesus here,

  250. my life in the next two minutes

  251. might just be a bit tough.

  252. So many of us

  253. struggle with assurance,

  254. struggle with just knowing,

  255. are we safe in Jesus?

  256. Are we in Jesus?

  257. Are we totally safe?

  258. Well,

  259. I would say to you,

  260. and I don't want this

  261. just to be a sort of platitude

  262. or a cheap shot,

  263. but I think it's something we miss.

  264. I'd say to you,

  265. genuinely spend time

  266. filling your mind

  267. with who Jesus is.

  268. Filling your mind

  269. with what Jesus has done for you.

  270. Filling your mind

  271. with who you are in Jesus

  272. from Jesus' own words.

  273. Fill your mind with that

  274. because we struggle with assurance

  275. so often

  276. because we allow our mind

  277. to be filled

  278. with our own imperfections.

  279. with our own failures.

  280. Sometimes our mind

  281. is not filled with anything

  282. other than the last argument

  283. we had with our wife

  284. or our husband

  285. or our children

  286. or whatever.

  287. Consider Jesus.

  288. That's not going to be

  289. a be-all and end-all.

  290. It'll sure help.

  291. I went to the,

  292. for those who are following

  293. the script,

  294. I'm off script at the minute,

  295. went to the dentist this week

  296. and it just occurred to me

  297. that there on the ceiling

  298. randomly

  299. is a TV screen.

  300. I think,

  301. why on earth

  302. would you have a TV screen

  303. on the ceiling

  304. in the dentist surgery?

  305. And of course,

  306. when I ask,

  307. like a fool,

  308. I had to ask,

  309. he said,

  310. well,

  311. it's to distract people

  312. who are fearful.

  313. Now,

  314. I wanted to say,

  315. listen,

  316. you're going to have to

  317. find a different channel

  318. because it wasn't distracting me,

  319. it was annoying me.

  320. But anyway,

  321. some people might have

  322. been distracted,

  323. but that's the purpose.

  324. So,

  325. if you're filling your mind

  326. with that,

  327. you're not thinking

  328. about what the dentist

  329. is doing to you.

  330. Second point,

  331. as we understand

  332. who Moses is,

  333. we understand more

  334. of why we need Jesus

  335. and that's verses 2-6.

  336. So,

  337. we're moving into

  338. new territory now.

  339. So,

  340. there is a connection

  341. because the faithfulness

  342. of Jesus

  343. in his mission

  344. connects

  345. into

  346. the next phase

  347. of the writer's argument.

  348. So,

  349. verse 1

  350. is actually

  351. both a summary

  352. and also a segue

  353. into his next

  354. line of argument.

  355. So,

  356. he's now going to

  357. compare Jesus

  358. and Moses.

  359. Now,

  360. who was Moses?

  361. Well,

  362. Moses was the most

  363. significant figure

  364. in Jewish history.

  365. he was really

  366. considered to be

  367. the architect

  368. of the Jewish nation

  369. under God,

  370. that is.

  371. He rescued

  372. God's people

  373. from Israel

  374. in the event

  375. we call Exodus.

  376. Go back and have a look

  377. at Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  378. It actually uses

  379. the word rescue

  380. and redemption there.

  381. God's people

  382. were in a terrible

  383. predicament

  384. and they cried out

  385. to God

  386. for rescue

  387. and God

  388. responded

  389. and sent

  390. a rescuer,

  391. a redeemer.

  392. And that

  393. was Moses

  394. in the event

  395. we call the Exodus.

  396. And Exodus

  397. was leading

  398. God's people

  399. out of Egypt

  400. to Mount Sinai,

  401. God's place.

  402. And at Mount Sinai,

  403. God reaffirmed

  404. his relationship

  405. to his people.

  406. Here you are

  407. gathered

  408. and the word

  409. in Exodus

  410. is oikos,

  411. which is a house.

  412. Here you are

  413. churched.

  414. Ecclesia,

  415. sorry,

  416. not oikos.

  417. Ecclesia,

  418. churched.

  419. You're gathered

  420. in front of me.

  421. You're my household.

  422. You're my community,

  423. my family.

  424. All those words

  425. sort of overlap.

  426. And you're

  427. governed

  428. by my law,

  429. which I'm about

  430. to deliver to you

  431. through Moses.

  432. Moses led

  433. God's people

  434. through the 40-year

  435. period of punishment

  436. for the rebellion,

  437. rebellion against

  438. God's grace

  439. and mercy

  440. and the rejection

  441. of God

  442. even after

  443. experiencing

  444. his grace

  445. and mercy.

  446. Moses supervised

  447. the construction

  448. of the tabernacle,

  449. which was the place

  450. to deal with sin

  451. and meet with God.

  452. He led

  453. the vast nation

  454. of Israel

  455. to the very edge

  456. of the promised land.

  457. Moses was a huge,

  458. huge character

  459. in Jewish history

  460. and in the Old Testament.

  461. And I think

  462. the writer again

  463. is anticipating

  464. the response

  465. of his readers.

  466. It might go

  467. something like this

  468. and this is my

  469. spin on it.

  470. So, you know,

  471. dismiss it

  472. if you think

  473. it's just weird.

  474. I can sort of

  475. imagine the writer

  476. thinking,

  477. okay,

  478. these guys

  479. are going to

  480. agree wholeheartedly

  481. that Jesus

  482. was a great rescuer,

  483. that Jesus

  484. was a great

  485. achiever

  486. of God's

  487. salvation plan,

  488. that he was

  489. a great trailblazer

  490. leading people

  491. back to God

  492. and God's place

  493. of forever blessing,

  494. that he was

  495. a personal champion

  496. who identified

  497. with and sacrificed

  498. himself for the

  499. good of God's people

  500. at great cost

  501. to himself.

  502. Yes,

  503. we can see all that

  504. and that's lovely.

  505. We appreciate all that

  506. about Jesus,

  507. but

  508. wouldn't it be true

  509. to say that

  510. all that same stuff

  511. was said about Moses?

  512. And if following

  513. the model of

  514. obedience and

  515. worship

  516. demonstrated by

  517. Moses

  518. was the designated

  519. pathway to life

  520. and relationship

  521. with God

  522. for generations,

  523. then surely

  524. it'll be good

  525. enough for us.

  526. Surely it'll be

  527. an acceptable

  528. pathway to heaven

  529. for us too.

  530. perhaps they were

  531. saying even more

  532. than that.

  533. You know,

  534. now that we

  535. were in this

  536. position,

  537. we're starting

  538. to realize

  539. how much

  540. we miss

  541. some of the

  542. practical aspects

  543. of our old

  544. Jewish religion.

  545. Things that were

  546. visible,

  547. things that were

  548. tangible,

  549. things that were

  550. familiar,

  551. things that were

  552. grounded in history,

  553. things that made

  554. us feel comfortable,

  555. things that made

  556. us feel safe,

  557. things that gave

  558. us a really

  559. nice rhythm

  560. in life,

  561. within which we

  562. could say,

  563. yes,

  564. everything is

  565. well in our

  566. world.

  567. In contrast

  568. to what we're

  569. now experiencing

  570. with this

  571. perhaps over

  572. identification

  573. with Jesus.

  574. Jesus.

  575. And so the

  576. writer launches

  577. into a

  578. comparison of

  579. Jesus and

  580. Moses,

  581. and he

  582. concedes

  583. that Jesus

  584. and Moses

  585. are alike

  586. at key

  587. points.

  588. Each was

  589. a specially

  590. appointed

  591. rescuer

  592. or savior

  593. figure.

  594. Each

  595. spoke God's

  596. word clearly

  597. and authoritatively

  598. to God's

  599. needy people.

  600. And each

  601. were described

  602. here,

  603. each were

  604. told here,

  605. was faithful

  606. in carrying

  607. out their

  608. mission.

  609. They cared

  610. for God's

  611. people.

  612. They did

  613. what they

  614. were asked

  615. to do

  616. by the

  617. Lord.

  618. They were

  619. serving

  620. God's

  621. house,

  622. God's

  623. household,

  624. God's

  625. nation,

  626. God's

  627. family,

  628. God's

  629. community.

  630. I think

  631. any of

  632. those words

  633. can just

  634. be

  635. plugged

  636. in

  637. here.

  638. And as

  639. I said

  640. before,

  641. check out

  642. Exodus 2

  643. for that

  644. language.

  645. But also

  646. Numbers 12,

  647. that's a

  648. phenomenal

  649. thing that

  650. was pointed

  651. out at our

  652. small group.

  653. I hadn't

  654. picked that

  655. verse up

  656. before.

  657. chapter 12

  658. verses 1

  659. to 9.

  660. There's

  661. an incredibly

  662. extravagant

  663. description of

  664. Moses by

  665. the Lord

  666. himself in

  667. the context

  668. when Aaron

  669. and Miriam

  670. got sick

  671. of Moses

  672. and were

  673. trying to

  674. sort of find

  675. a way to

  676. shove him to

  677. the side

  678. and get

  679. around him.

  680. And the

  681. Lord appeared

  682. to them and

  683. said,

  684. this is my

  685. servant

  686. Moses.

  687. And it

  688. was extravagant

  689. terms he

  690. described

  691. Moses.

  692. But,

  693. equally

  694. true,

  695. Moses and

  696. Jesus

  697. contrast at

  698. key points.

  699. In fact,

  700. it's not

  701. their similarities

  702. but their

  703. differences

  704. which ultimately

  705. form

  706. final evaluation

  707. of the two.

  708. Jesus

  709. is in a

  710. category by

  711. himself in

  712. terms of

  713. status before

  714. God.

  715. His part

  716. in God's

  717. salvation plan

  718. is unique.

  719. His

  720. achievements

  721. as a

  722. savior figure

  723. are unique

  724. and complete.

  725. And we're

  726. told here

  727. for that

  728. reason,

  729. at those

  730. key points,

  731. he is just

  732. so totally

  733. different from

  734. Moses.

  735. And for that

  736. reason,

  737. he deserves

  738. far, far

  739. greater glory

  740. and honor

  741. than Moses

  742. does.

  743. So,

  744. God's

  745. community.

  746. And here's

  747. the point of

  748. contrast.

  749. Moses was

  750. never able to

  751. be more than

  752. a servant

  753. to God's

  754. community.

  755. He was a

  756. good servant,

  757. but he was

  758. never more

  759. than a

  760. servant.

  761. Jesus

  762. established

  763. God's

  764. community.

  765. Jesus

  766. owned God's

  767. community.

  768. Jesus

  769. defined

  770. God's

  771. community.

  772. Moses

  773. was

  774. used by

  775. God to

  776. establish a

  777. clear pattern

  778. of God's

  779. rescue or

  780. God's

  781. redemption or

  782. God's

  783. salvation.

  784. But in

  785. the end,

  786. Moses was

  787. not able to

  788. achieve anything

  789. lasting.

  790. He was

  791. not actually

  792. able to

  793. deliver God's

  794. people from

  795. the very

  796. basis of

  797. the rebellion.

  798. That is,

  799. their bad

  800. hearts,

  801. their bad

  802. track record

  803. against God.

  804. He could

  805. speak God's

  806. word to

  807. them and

  808. he did so

  809. faithfully,

  810. but he

  811. couldn't make

  812. that word

  813. penetrate to

  814. their hearts

  815. and change

  816. their attitudes

  817. and their

  818. minds.

  819. Which,

  820. of course,

  821. is exactly

  822. what Jesus

  823. does.

  824. Moses was

  825. unable to

  826. lead God's

  827. people

  828. consistently.

  829. He was a

  830. brilliant

  831. leader.

  832. but he

  833. wasn't

  834. perfect.

  835. He was

  836. prone to

  837. anger and

  838. prejudice.

  839. He just

  840. got sick and

  841. tired of

  842. the whinging

  843. about God's

  844. people.

  845. He would

  846. have given

  847. up on them

  848. at times.

  849. But not so

  850. Jesus.

  851. Even more

  852. important,

  853. Moses was not

  854. a priest.

  855. His brother

  856. Aaron was a

  857. priest.

  858. priest.

  859. So,

  860. ultimately,

  861. Moses

  862. wasn't

  863. actually

  864. able.

  865. He

  866. wasn't

  867. qualified.

  868. He

  869. didn't have

  870. the opportunity

  871. to deal

  872. with the

  873. sins of

  874. God's

  875. people.

  876. He

  877. didn't have

  878. the

  879. qualification

  880. to deal

  881. with the

  882. sins of

  883. God's

  884. people.

  885. people.

  886. He could

  887. point out

  888. their sins.

  889. He

  890. himself,

  891. of course,

  892. not only was

  893. another priest,

  894. but he

  895. needed a

  896. priest for

  897. his own

  898. sins.

  899. Jesus.

  900. The point

  901. of comparison,

  902. contrast,

  903. Moses set

  904. up there

  905. as a

  906. way,

  907. the

  908. template

  909. for God's

  910. savior figure,

  911. for God's

  912. plan of

  913. redemption,

  914. but he

  915. couldn't

  916. actually

  917. deliver it.

  918. So,

  919. as we

  920. saw that

  921. template in

  922. Moses,

  923. we thought,

  924. ah,

  925. we've got to

  926. wait for

  927. someone better.

  928. And Moses

  929. himself knew

  930. that he was

  931. waiting for

  932. someone better.

  933. Moses could

  934. only point

  935. to God's

  936. real savior,

  937. real

  938. deliverer,

  939. the real

  940. crusher from

  941. Genesis chapter

  942. three,

  943. the salvation

  944. trailblazer,

  945. the champion.

  946. Moses loved

  947. God,

  948. and Moses

  949. longed for

  950. the deliverance

  951. of his

  952. people from

  953. rebellion to

  954. the good

  955. life of

  956. God's

  957. blessing.

  958. Of course

  959. he did.

  960. But Jesus

  961. loved God

  962. and then

  963. delivered that

  964. which Moses

  965. could only

  966. long for.

  967. Moses was

  968. significant to

  969. the people of

  970. Israel and

  971. the history

  972. of Israel.

  973. No,

  974. sorry,

  975. Moses was

  976. significant to

  977. the people of

  978. Israel and

  979. the history

  980. of Israel

  981. because his

  982. life and

  983. ministry

  984. shaped or

  985. became the

  986. model for

  987. or the

  988. type of

  989. God's

  990. rescue plan,

  991. not because

  992. he achieved

  993. it.

  994. And Jesus

  995. affirms that

  996. understanding in

  997. his own

  998. ministry.

  999. If you read

  1000. the Gospels,

  1001. particularly in

  1002. Matthew 5,

  1003. 6,

  1004. 7,

  1005. the Sermon

  1006. on the

  1007. Mount,

  1008. Jesus casts

  1009. his own

  1010. ministry in

  1011. terms of

  1012. being a

  1013. new and

  1014. better

  1015. Moses,

  1016. with a

  1017. new and

  1018. better

  1019. exodus or

  1020. a new and

  1021. better rescue

  1022. of God's

  1023. people to

  1024. a new and

  1025. better promised

  1026. land.

  1027. therefore,

  1028. the argument

  1029. is to

  1030. put Moses

  1031. and Jesus

  1032. on the

  1033. same page

  1034. in terms

  1035. of glory,

  1036. in terms

  1037. of confidence

  1038. you would

  1039. invest in

  1040. each for

  1041. salvation,

  1042. in terms

  1043. of praise

  1044. offered them,

  1045. to do

  1046. that is

  1047. to display

  1048. a shocking

  1049. lack of

  1050. understanding.

  1051. And

  1052. ultimately,

  1053. as I said

  1054. before,

  1055. to insult

  1056. the

  1057. achievements

  1058. of

  1059. Jesus.

  1060. To drift

  1061. away,

  1062. or to

  1063. deliberately

  1064. abandon

  1065. the way

  1066. of Jesus

  1067. for the

  1068. way of

  1069. Moses,

  1070. is silly,

  1071. according to

  1072. the writer,

  1073. because it

  1074. goes from

  1075. the superior

  1076. to the

  1077. inferior.

  1078. It goes

  1079. from reality

  1080. to incomplete.

  1081. It goes

  1082. from reality

  1083. delivered and

  1084. tangible to

  1085. the prototype

  1086. drawings.

  1087. And verse

  1088. six delivers

  1089. the logical

  1090. conclusion of

  1091. all this

  1092. argument.

  1093. Delivers it

  1094. as a

  1095. warning.

  1096. we are

  1097. his

  1098. household,

  1099. his

  1100. house,

  1101. his

  1102. family,

  1103. his

  1104. community,

  1105. his

  1106. died-for

  1107. resurrection

  1108. community,

  1109. the church.

  1110. We are

  1111. his

  1112. house,

  1113. if indeed

  1114. we hold

  1115. fast our

  1116. confidence

  1117. and are

  1118. boasting

  1119. in our

  1120. hope.

  1121. Very

  1122. simply as

  1123. this,

  1124. turn your

  1125. back on

  1126. Jesus,

  1127. and you've

  1128. really turned

  1129. your back

  1130. on salvation.

  1131. since

  1132. Jesus is

  1133. greater than

  1134. Moses,

  1135. then his

  1136. call to

  1137. hear God's

  1138. word and

  1139. follow him

  1140. to life and

  1141. blessing is

  1142. more important.

  1143. And therefore

  1144. failure to do

  1145. so will have

  1146. more severe

  1147. consequences,

  1148. even than

  1149. what God's

  1150. people experienced

  1151. under Moses.

  1152. we

  1153. demonstrate

  1154. the reality

  1155. of our

  1156. heavenly

  1157. calling in

  1158. verse 1.

  1159. We

  1160. demonstrate

  1161. that we're

  1162. the new

  1163. salvation

  1164. community of

  1165. Jesus.

  1166. We

  1167. demonstrate

  1168. that we've

  1169. been part

  1170. of this

  1171. knock-down

  1172. rebuild

  1173. project,

  1174. which Jesus

  1175. came into

  1176. our world

  1177. to do.

  1178. We

  1179. demonstrate

  1180. all of

  1181. that

  1182. very

  1183. simply

  1184. by being

  1185. faithful to

  1186. Jesus.

  1187. Jesus was

  1188. faithful to

  1189. his purpose.

  1190. The challenge

  1191. to you and

  1192. me is,

  1193. will we be

  1194. faithful to

  1195. Jesus?

  1196. I don't

  1197. know what

  1198. default

  1199. settings are

  1200. in your

  1201. central

  1202. processing

  1203. unit,

  1204. but they

  1205. will be

  1206. there.

  1207. They

  1208. will be

  1209. there.

  1210. They'll

  1211. come out

  1212. at random

  1213. times.

  1214. will
