  1. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

  2. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion

  3. on the day of testing in the wilderness,

  4. where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for 40 years.

  5. Therefore, I was provoked with that generation and said,

  6. They always go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.

  7. As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  8. Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart,

  9. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  10. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called today,

  11. that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  12. For we have come to share in Christ,

  13. if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  14. As it is said,

  15. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.

  16. For who were those who heard and yet rebelled?

  17. Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?

  18. And with whom was he provoked for 40 years?

  19. Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

  20. And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest,

  21. but to those who were disobedient?

  22. So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

  23. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands,

  24. let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

  25. For good news came to us just as to them,

  26. but the message they heard did not benefit them,

  27. because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

  28. For we have believed, sorry, we who have believed enter that rest,

  29. as he has said.

  30. As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  31. Although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

  32. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way,

  33. and God rested on the seventh day from all his works.

  34. And again in this passage he said,

  35. they shall not enter my rest.

  36. Since therefore it remains for some to enter it,

  37. and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,

  38. again he appoints a certain day, today,

  39. saying through David so long afterwards,

  40. in the words already quoted,

  41. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

  42. For if Joshua had given them rest,

  43. God would not have spoken of another day later on.

  44. So then there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,

  45. for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

  46. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest,

  47. so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  48. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

  49. piercing the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow,

  50. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  51. And no creature is hidden from his sight,

  52. but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him whom we must give account.

  53. Good morning, everyone.

  54. Can I encourage you to have your Bibles open at Hebrews chapters 3 and 4?

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  55. I'm about to embark on the sheer madness of trying to teach this entire passage in one talk,

  56. a passage which refers to the books of Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Joshua and Psalms,

  57. and it has something to say about each of them.

  58. So I think we're going to need God's help.

  59. So how about I'm going to need God's help,

  60. and you're going to need God's help to listen.

  61. So let's pray and ask for God's help.

  62. Heavenly Father, we thank you that we can spend this time together meditating on your word,

  63. and please give me clarity of thought and expression as I teach it,

  64. and may my words be faithful and true.

  65. And we pray that all of us might draw encouragement from this portion of the scriptures today.

  66. In Jesus' name, amen.

  67. What do you think is the defining feature of our day?

  68. Is it computer technology, smartphones, social media, the internet, artificial intelligence?

  69. Over the last 50 years, computers and associated technologies have moved from being something marginal

  70. to something that pervades every aspect of our lives.

  71. And now that the AI cat is out of the bag, some jobs are disappearing,

  72. many other jobs are changing, and the world will never be the same again.

  73. Is that the defining feature of our age?

  74. Maybe the defining feature of our day is gender confusion.

  75. The ideology of expressive individualism has run roughshod over science,

  76. over natural law, over logic, and over common sense,

  77. so that now the midwife who makes the plain observation and says it's a girl

  78. is guilty of the crime of assigning gender at birth.

  79. Maybe that's the defining feature of our day.

  80. Or is the defining feature of our day political polarisation?

  81. A hardening of positions, progressive and conservative, left and right,

  82. and a decay, a consequent decay of public discourse, a decay of reasonable debate.

  83. Everything's political spin and name-calling and accusations and demonisation and scaremongering.

  84. And increasingly, people are locked into online echo chambers

  85. where they only hear their own opinions voiced back to them.

  86. Maybe that's the defining feature of our day.

  87. Or maybe the defining feature of our day is climate change, environmental degradation,

  88. the age of the Anthropocene where human activity has become,

  89. the impact of human activity on our world has become so great

  90. that the natural world is starting to collapse under the weight of it.

  91. No, we live in anxious times.

  92. Things fall apart.

  93. The centre cannot hold.

  94. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.

  95. That's how William Butler Yeats described the atmosphere in post-World War Europe in 1919.

  96. But they're words that could fit our day.

  97. The doomsday clock has been set to 89 seconds to midnight.

  98. According to its custodians, this is,

  99. the world is the closest it has ever been to catastrophe.

  100. We live in a world on the brink.

  101. And yet for all this, the Bible says there is another,

  102. much more important defining feature of the present time.

  103. Today is the day when the voice of God is heard.

  104. Hebrews chapter 3 verse 7.

    Hebrews 3:7

  105. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

  106. today, if you hear his voice.

  107. The first part of that verse are the words of the author of Hebrews.

  108. The second part of that verse,

  109. in the second part of that verse,

  110. he begins to quote from Psalm 95.

  111. Psalm 95 verses 7 to 11.

    Psalms 95:7–11

  112. And Hebrews takes that Old Testament passage,

  113. Psalm 95,

  114. and applies it directly to the New Testament Christian readers and hearers of this book.

  115. This is what the Holy Spirit says to you today.

  116. Down in verse 13, he says,

  117. exhort one another every day so long as it is called today.

  118. He picks up that idea of today and says this entire present time is a succession of today's.

  119. A sequence of days in which the voice of God is heard.

  120. If you're flying on a plane and sipping a cup of tea and doing a crossword and listening to some music on your earphones

  121. and suddenly the captain's voice comes across the speakers,

  122. attention, the plane's engines have failed.

  123. We're gliding over open sea and we'll crash into it within the next three minutes.

  124. Listen carefully and I'll tell you how you can survive.

  125. Well, you would first regret that you hadn't paid any attention to the safety briefing at the start of your flight.

  126. And second, give the captain your full attention.

  127. Cups of tea and crosswords would be forgotten.

  128. The most important feature of today,

  129. as long as it's called today,

  130. is that we hear the voice of God and give it our full attention.

  131. But the word of God we hear is not a new word.

  132. We don't seek God's word in visions and dreams.

  133. The word of God we hear is the ancient word indelibly written down,

  134. passed down through the centuries and spoken afresh to each generation by the Holy Spirit.

  135. The ancient word is the present word.

  136. The Holy Spirit is speaking to us today in the words of the scriptures.

  137. Now, the author of the Hebrews,

  138. the author of this book,

  139. takes the ancient word of Psalm 95 and applies it to the Christians he's addressing.

  140. We can go a step further.

  141. We can take this entire passage,

  142. Hebrews 3 and 4,

  143. as an ancient word addressed in the present to us.

  144. This Hebrews 3 and 4,

  145. an ancient word which includes the even more ancient word of Psalm 95.

  146. So what is the Holy Spirit saying to us today from Psalm 95 and from Hebrews chapters 3 and 4?

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  147. Well, verse 7 again,

  148. therefore it begins,

  149. therefore.

  150. Now,

  151. that is what he's going to say in this passage is an implication of what he's just said before.

  152. What has he just said before?

  153. Well,

  154. earlier in chapter 3,

  155. he said in verse 3 that Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses.

  156. Won't go into why Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses.

  157. That would be to repeat the message from last week.

  158. But the point is,

  159. the one we follow,

  160. Jesus,

  161. is more glorious than the one the ancient Israelites followed,

  162. Moses.

  163. The one through whom God has spoken to us,

  164. Jesus,

  165. is more glorious than the one through whom God spoke to them,

  166. Moses.

  167. Because Jesus is greater than Moses,

  168. therefore,

  169. as the Holy Spirit says,

  170. verse 7,

  171. today,

  172. if you hear his voice,

  173. do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion on the day of testing in the wilderness,

  174. where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for 40 years.

  175. Therefore,

  176. I was provoked with that generation and said,

  177. they always go astray in their heart.

  178. They have not known my ways.

  179. As I swore in my wrath,

  180. they shall not enter my rest.

  181. That's the ancient word that the writer to the Hebrews quotes as a present word for his hearers.

  182. We're not going to spend much time on verses 7 to 11 directly here,

  183. partly because we've got another 21 verses to get through.

  184. But more importantly,

  185. because what the Bible then does is draw out three specific things from that quotation from Psalm 95.

  186. This is what Psalm 95 is saying to you today.

  187. But I do want to make one further observation before we get to those three things.

  188. And that is,

  189. so far I've been glossing over a nuance of the text.

  190. Notice verse 7 actually implies two acts of hearing.

  191. As the Holy Spirit says,

  192. today if you hear his voice.

  193. Perhaps we could say two moments of divine speech.

  194. There's an initial moment of divine communication,

  195. if you hear his voice.

  196. And then there's another moment,

  197. as the Holy Spirit says.

  198. That is,

  199. the Holy Spirit is instructing us in what to do when we hear God's voice.

  200. To put it another way,

  201. the words quoted from Psalm 95 are not the complete word of God to us today.

  202. Rather,

  203. they are a word about how we respond to the word.

  204. The Holy Spirit telling us how to respond to the word of God.

  205. But that logically prior word,

  206. which Psalm 95 instructs us in about how to respond to,

  207. that could in a sense be any word of God.

  208. But in context,

  209. it is a specific word.

  210. The word which the writer calls in chapter 4,

  211. verse 2,

  212. the good news.

  213. Good news came to us,

  214. just as to them.

  215. It's the good news of Jesus Christ.

  216. That's the voice of God for us today.

  217. That's the word that is being proclaimed in this day throughout the whole world.

  218. And it's about that word that the writer to the Hebrews instructs us in terms of how we respond to it from Psalm 95.

  219. This word about how to respond to the word.

  220. Okay.

  221. So what do we see from this word about how to respond to the word?

  222. Well,

  223. three things.

  224. First,

  225. verses 12 to 15,

  226. a warning.

  227. Then verses 16 to 19,

  228. an example.

  229. And then in chapter 4,

  230. a promise.

  231. And then finally,

  232. the writer rounds it out with a meditation,

  233. a solemn meditation on the word of God in chapter 4,

  234. verses 12 and 13.

  235. Well,

  236. first,

  237. let's think about a warning for us today.

  238. Look at chapter 3,

  239. verse 12 with me,

  240. a warning for us today.

  241. Take care,

  242. brothers,

  243. lest there be in any of you an evil,

  244. unbelieving heart,

  245. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  246. But exhort one another every day,

  247. as long as it's called today,

  248. that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  249. For we share in Christ,

  250. if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  251. As it is said today,

  252. if you hear his voice,

  253. do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.

  254. Now,

  255. this isn't the time to take a deep dive into the doctrine of the perseverance of

  256. the saints,

  257. which I fully believe.

  258. But the implication of these verses is that it is impossible,

  259. it is possible to make some kind of beginning.

  260. And yet to fall away from the living God.

  261. You fall away,

  262. or you depart from,

  263. a position,

  264. a path,

  265. a course of action,

  266. that you previously occupy.

  267. You fall away from a place you already are.

  268. It involves turning away,

  269. it involves leaving something behind.

  270. That's the sense of this word,

  271. wherever it occurs throughout the New Testament.

  272. And the word,

  273. the words in verse 12 are addressed to brothers.

  274. Although brothers,

  275. they're used in an inclusive sense,

  276. brothers and sisters.

  277. But it's to believe it's believers that this,

  278. these words are addressed to brothers,

  279. brothers and sisters.

  280. A non-believer doesn't fall away from the living God because a non-believer has not

  281. come to the living God in the first place.

  282. It is a Christian brother or sister who might.

  283. See brothers,

  284. sisters,

  285. it matters not only how we begin the race,

  286. it matters how we complete the race.

  287. Verse 14,

  288. we share in Christ,

  289. if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  290. Marathon runners train carefully so that they can sustain their race pace from beginning to end.

  291. They start their race conservatively so that they can finish strong.

  292. And few marathon runners fail to finish the race because they've been tripped over by a spectator

  293. or bitten by a stray dog.

  294. When a runner falls short,

  295. it's because their own physical or mental stamina fails.

  296. Likewise,

  297. in the Christian race,

  298. the greater threats are internal,

  299. not external.

  300. It's not persecution or hardship or difficulties,

  301. although these of course may play their part.

  302. The real danger though is within.

  303. Take care lest there be in any of you an evil,

  304. unbelieving heart

  305. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  306. What we must guard against,

  307. verse 13,

  308. is that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  309. The battleground is within.

  310. It's over the contested territory of the human heart.

  311. And our enemy,

  312. sin,

  313. does not fight in the open field.

  314. It's a Trojan horse.

  315. Sin's strategy is to deceive

  316. so that we open the gates of our heart to it unawares.

  317. Richard Baxter wrote this,

  318. the devil is a greater scholar than you

  319. and a nimbler disputant.

  320. He can transform himself into an angel of light to deceive.

  321. He will get within you and trip up your heels before you are aware.

  322. You see neither hook nor line,

  323. much less the subtle angler himself,

  324. while he is offering you his bait.

  325. And his bait shall be so fitted to your temper and disposition

  326. that he will be sure to find advantages within you

  327. and make your own principles and inclinations betray you.

  328. Sin deceives us.

  329. See the first step in forsaking God's word

  330. may even seem to us like virtue.

  331. So one rejects unpopular teachings of the Bible

  332. under the guise of compassion and inclusion.

  333. Or on the flip side,

  334. another sees himself as a staunch defender of truth

  335. and under that banner abandons love and grace and humility

  336. as slowly his heart is consumed by self-righteousness.

  337. See, because sin's strategy is to deceive,

  338. our defence against sin is to be part of a community

  339. committed to speaking the truth to one another.

  340. Verse 13,

  341. exhort one another every day,

  342. as long as it's called today,

  343. that none of you may be hardened

  344. by the deceitfulness of sin.

  345. Notice a couple of things about this.

  346. First,

  347. this is everyone's responsibility,

  348. not just the pastors.

  349. The New Testament is full of one another's.

  350. Now,

  351. we're to love one another,

  352. be kind to one another,

  353. forgive one another.

  354. Well,

  355. here we are to exhort one another.

  356. Dave Bott needs us to exhort him

  357. as much as we need him to exhort us.

  358. Pastors are as vulnerable to temptation as anyone.

  359. And the fact that sin deceives

  360. means that the person being deceived by it is unaware.

  361. That's why we need a community,

  362. all of us,

  363. where we are committed to speaking the truth to one another.

  364. Second thing to notice is that exhorting one another

  365. is essentially a verbal activity.

  366. The author of Hebrews calls this book,

  367. the book of Hebrews,

  368. a word of exhortation.

  369. Another way you could translate that is encourage one another,

  370. a word of encouragement.

  371. The purpose is to strengthen,

  372. it's to build up.

  373. And it's true,

  374. we do encourage one another by deeds of love.

  375. But the central idea here is that we exhort one another.

  376. We speak the truth to each other

  377. so as to expose sin's deceptions

  378. and so as to fortify each other in faith.

  379. And we don't fulfil this instruction to exhort one another.

  380. We don't fulfil it by being hypercritical.

  381. You know,

  382. by pulling each other up for every minor fault.

  383. That's not what this is saying.

  384. We don't fulfil it by constantly berating ourselves

  385. for how awful we all are.

  386. In 1893,

  387. 18-year-old Winston Churchill

  388. qualified to enter the Royal Military College

  389. at Sandhurst as a cavalry cadet.

  390. His father was disappointed

  391. that he hadn't qualified for the infantry.

  392. And so his father sent him this letter.

  393. He said,

  394. The first extremely discreditable failure of your performance

  395. was missing the infantry.

  396. for in that failure is demonstrated beyond refutation

  397. your slovenly, happy-go-lucky,

  398. harem-scare-em style of work

  399. for which you've been distinguished

  400. at your different schools.

  401. Never have I received a really good report

  402. of your conduct in your work

  403. from any master or tutor,

  404. always behind-hand,

  405. never advancing in your class,

  406. incessant complaints of total want of application.

  407. Do not think that I'm going to take the trouble

  408. of writing you long letters

  409. after every failure and folly you commit and undergo

  410. because I no longer attach the slightest weight

  411. to anything you may say

  412. about your own accomplishments and exploits.

  413. Make this position indelibly impressed on your mind

  414. that if your conduct and action

  415. is similar to what it's been in the other establishments,

  416. then my responsibility for you is over.

  417. because I am certain that if you cannot prevent yourself

  418. from leading the idle, useless, unprofitable life

  419. that you have had during your school days

  420. and latter months,

  421. you will become a mere social wastrel,

  422. one of the hundreds of the public school failures,

  423. and you will degenerate into a shabby,

  424. unhappy and futile existence.

  425. If that is so,

  426. you will have to bear all the blame

  427. for such misfortune yourself,

  428. your affectionate father, Randolph SC.

  429. LAUGHTER

  430. That is not a word of encouragement.

  431. LAUGHTER

  432. Yes, each of us is an incredibly complex mix of good and bad.

  433. Yes, each of us is subject to temptation

  434. and prone to weakness.

  435. But we exhort one another,

  436. not by constantly telling each other how bad we are,

  437. we exhort one another by telling each other how good he is,

  438. by reminding one another of the goodness of Christ,

  439. the beauty of Christ,

  440. the one who's better than angels,

  441. better than Moses,

  442. crowned with glory and honour,

  443. our merciful and faithful high priest.

  444. The aim of exhorting one another is,

  445. as it's expressed in verse 14,

  446. that we hold our original confidence in Christ

  447. firm to the end.

  448. And so the chief theme of our exhortation

  449. is the goodness and majesty and sufficiency of Christ.

  450. After all, it's not being a sinner

  451. that means I fall away from the living God.

  452. It's rather being an unbelieving sinner,

  453. an evil, unbelieving heart.

  454. It's being an unforgiven sinner,

  455. a sinner so hardened by sin's deceitfulness

  456. that I no longer even realise I am a sinner

  457. and that I need a saviour.

  458. The heart of our exhortation is to remind one another

  459. of our perfect saviour and say,

  460. keep trusting in him.

  461. Well, alongside the warning for today,

  462. the words Hebrews quotes from Psalm 95

  463. also give us an example for today.

  464. Look at verse 16, chapter 3, verse 16.

  465. For who were those who heard and yet rebelled?

  466. Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?

  467. And with whom was he provoked for 40 years?

  468. Was it not those who sinned,

  469. whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

  470. And to whom did he swear

  471. that they would not enter his rest,

  472. but to those who were disobedient?

  473. So we see that they were unable to enter

  474. because of unbelief.

  475. The example that Psalm 95 draws on

  476. is the generation of Israelites

  477. who were led by Moses.

  478. They'd been, God had brought them

  479. under Moses' leadership

  480. out of slavery in Egypt.

  481. They'd witnessed the 10 plagues.

  482. They passed through the Red Sea.

  483. They were led by the pillar of fire

  484. and smoke in the wilderness.

  485. They drank water from the rock.

  486. They ate manna from heaven.

  487. They saw my works, God says.

  488. They made a beginning.

  489. They experienced redemption.

  490. They came out of Egypt.

  491. But that's as far as they got.

  492. They did not enter the promised land.

  493. Why?

  494. Well, Hebrews 3, verses 16 to 19

    Hebrews 3:16–19

  495. uses a variety of terms for their apostasy.

  496. Verse 16, they heard and yet rebelled.

  497. Verse 17, they sinned.

  498. Verse 18, they were disobedient.

  499. Verse 19, unbelief.

  500. There were a string of instances

  501. of Israel's disobedience and unbelief

  502. in the wilderness.

  503. But the key moment came in Numbers

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  504. chapters 13 and 14

  505. where Israel arrived at Kadesh Barnea

  506. at the edge of the promised land

  507. and instructed by God,

  508. they sent out 12 spies

  509. to scout out the land.

  510. And the spies returned

  511. and they reported that the land was good

  512. but they also reported

  513. that it was heavily defended.

  514. The people were strong.

  515. The cities fortified.

  516. The descendants of Anak,

  517. giants were among them.

  518. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb,

  519. pleaded with the people,

  520. do not rebel against the Lord.

  521. But the people were too afraid.

  522. They did not trust God.

  523. They refused to enter the land.

  524. They were unable to enter

  525. because of unbelief.

  526. Verse 19 says here.

  527. And so God confirmed them in that fate,

  528. sentencing them to 40 years

  529. of wandering around the wilderness

  530. until an entire adult generation

  531. had perished.

  532. I swore in my wrath,

  533. they shall not enter my rest.

  534. They were unable to enter

  535. and they shall not enter my rest.

  536. Well, the word of God drives home

  537. the message of this example

  538. in chapter 4,

  539. likening us Christians

  540. to Israel at Kadesh Barnea,

  541. poised at the edge

  542. of entering the promised land.

  543. Look at chapter 4, verses 1 and 2.

  544. Therefore, while the promise

  545. of entering his rest

  546. still stands,

  547. let us fear lest any of you

  548. should seem to have failed to reach it.

  549. For good news came to us

  550. just as to them,

  551. but the message they heard

  552. did not benefit them

  553. because they were not united by faith

  554. with those who listened.

  555. The last part of verse 2 there

  556. is a little bit difficult,

  557. but I think what is meant there

  558. because they were not united

  559. by faith with those who listened.

  560. The they there is Israel,

  561. the Israelites,

  562. and the those who listened

  563. I think are Caleb and Joshua,

  564. the two spies who did heed

  565. the word of God

  566. and said we must enter.

  567. But the rest of Israel

  568. would not unite themselves

  569. with the faith of Caleb and Joshua

  570. and so were sentenced

  571. to perish in the wilderness.

  572. But we, like Israel,

  573. are promised rest.

  574. I will bring you into the land,

  575. the Lord had promised Israel.

  576. Whoever believes in the Son

  577. has eternal life,

  578. the Lord has promised us.

  579. two different forms

  580. of the one promise,

  581. the promise of entering God's rest.

  582. Good news for Old Testament Israel,

  583. good news for New Testament

  584. disciples of Christ.

  585. And the point chapter 4 makes

  586. is that the promise

  587. of entering God's rest

  588. still stands.

  589. It's open,

  590. it's available.

  591. The promise of entering

  592. his rest still stands,

  593. chapter 4 verse 1.

  594. So let us fear lest any of you

  595. should seem to have failed

  596. to reach us.

  597. Notice again that God's word

  598. calls us,

  599. as in chapter 3 verse 12,

  600. God's word calls us

  601. to a corporate responsibility

  602. for one another.

  603. Let us fear lest any

  604. should seem to have failed

  605. to reach it.

  606. 3 verse 12,

  607. take care brothers

  608. that there,

  609. lest there be

  610. in any one of you

  611. an evil,

  612. unbelieving heart.

  613. Each one of us

  614. is to be concerned

  615. not only with our own faith,

  616. but all of us

  617. are to care for everyone.

  618. When I was at Bible college

  619. in our year,

  620. there were,

  621. we had a few classmates

  622. who struggled academically,

  623. who struggled to learn Greek,

  624. or who struggled

  625. at writing essays.

  626. And others in our class

  627. would get alongside them

  628. and assist them

  629. and provide tuition

  630. and help them

  631. with their study.

  632. Because as a class,

  633. all of us

  634. wanted everyone

  635. to reach the goal.

  636. But we,

  637. of course,

  638. have a much greater goal

  639. before us,

  640. don't we?

  641. Which is nothing less

  642. than the goal of life,

  643. the goal of entering

  644. God's rest.

  645. In Hebrews 4,

    Hebrews 4:3–10

  646. verses 3 to 10,

  647. the Bible gives us

  648. a brief history of rest,

  649. and the main point

  650. is just to reinforce

  651. the point that's already

  652. been made,

  653. the promise of entering

  654. his rest still stands.

  655. I'll fly through it.

  656. Quickly,

  657. a brief history of rest.

  658. In verses 3 and 4,

  659. we read of rest established.

  660. Rest established.

  661. From halfway through

  662. verse 3,

  663. God's works

  664. were finished

  665. from the foundation

  666. of the world,

  667. for he has spoken

  668. of the seventh day

  669. in this way,

  670. and God rested

  671. on the seventh day

  672. from all his works.

  673. The point

  674. God's word is making here

  675. is that from the very

  676. beginning,

  677. rest has been available.

  678. God created things

  679. and then he rested.

  680. If you look,

  681. and if you look at

  682. Genesis chapters 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  683. you see that the seventh day

  684. is the only day

  685. in the narrative

  686. which doesn't end.

  687. For every other day,

  688. we're told there was evening,

  689. there was morning,

  690. the first day,

  691. so on.

  692. But the seventh day

  693. is open-ended.

  694. God created

  695. and then rested

  696. and he's resting still.

  697. Now,

  698. God resting still,

  699. of course,

  700. doesn't mean that he's

  701. sitting back doing nothing.

  702. Jesus said,

  703. my father's working

  704. and I'm working

  705. until now.

  706. God is sustaining

  707. the world he's made.

  708. But with the work

  709. of creation completed,

  710. he established

  711. his rest

  712. as the goal

  713. to which creation

  714. is heading.

  715. The goal

  716. for which

  717. we were made

  718. that we might share

  719. in his rest.

  720. From the beginning,

  721. God rested

  722. and that rest

  723. has always been available.

  724. Rest established.

  725. Secondly,

  726. in this brief history

  727. of rest,

  728. we hear of rest

  729. rejected.

  730. Again,

  731. in verse 5,

  732. again in the passage,

  733. he said,

  734. they shall not enter

  735. my rest.

  736. And verse 6,

  737. those who formerly

  738. received the good news

  739. failed to enter

  740. because of disobedience.

  741. Israel had no one

  742. but themselves

  743. to blame

  744. for their failure

  745. to enter.

  746. Rest was available.

  747. It was promised

  748. to them.

  749. But they rejected it.

  750. They disbelieved

  751. the promise

  752. of God.

  753. thirdly,

  754. in this

  755. brief history

  756. of rest,

  757. we read of

  758. rest

  759. promised

  760. again.

  761. Verse 7,

  762. and so again,

  763. God appoints

  764. a certain day

  765. today,

  766. saying through

  767. David so long

  768. afterward,

  769. in the words

  770. already quoted,

  771. today,

  772. if you hear

  773. his voice,

  774. do not harden

  775. your hearts.

  776. The point

  777. the Bible's

  778. making here

  779. is that

  780. in Psalm 95,

  781. God is

  782. reiterating

  783. his promise

  784. of rest

  785. several hundred

  786. years after

  787. that generation

  788. that fell

  789. in the wilderness

  790. through David.

  791. Now,

  792. you might say

  793. Psalm 95

  794. sounds a bit more

  795. like a warning

  796. than a promise.

  797. Where's the promise

  798. in Psalm 95?

  799. It's a stern warning.

  800. But let me say

  801. a couple of things

  802. about that.

  803. Firstly,

  804. that the warning

  805. actually implies

  806. a promise.

  807. if you were

  808. to go to the zoo

  809. and go to an

  810. enclosure and

  811. there's a sign

  812. at the enclosure

  813. that says,

  814. do not feed

  815. the chimpanzees,

  816. you would expect

  817. to see chimpanzees

  818. and feel pretty

  819. ripped off

  820. if you didn't.

  821. Likewise,

  822. the warning

  823. of Psalm 95

  824. is don't

  825. harden your

  826. hearts.

  827. It implies

  828. the promise.

  829. God's promise,

  830. God's offer

  831. of rest

  832. is still

  833. available.

  834. Don't

  835. harden your

  836. hearts

  837. so that

  838. you don't

  839. miss it.

  840. But indeed,

  841. secondly,

  842. if you look

  843. at the whole

  844. of Psalm 95,

  845. the first

  846. half is

  847. indeed

  848. an invitation

  849. to come.

  850. The second

  851. half,

  852. which Hebrews

  853. quotes,

  854. is a warning

  855. not to reject

  856. the invitation.

  857. So how does

  858. Psalm 95

  859. start?

  860. Psalm 95,

  861. O come,

  862. let us sing

  863. to the Lord,

  864. let us make

  865. a joyful noise

  866. to the rock

  867. of our salvation.

  868. Let us

  869. come into

  870. his presence

  871. with thanksgiving.

  872. Let us

  873. make a joyful

  874. noise to him

  875. with songs

  876. of praise,

  877. for the Lord

  878. is a great

  879. God and a

  880. great king

  881. above all

  882. gods.

  883. Psalm 95

  884. is an invitation

  885. to enter

  886. God's presence,

  887. to share

  888. in his joy,

  889. and then a

  890. warning not

  891. to reject

  892. the invitation.

  893. Rest

  894. is promised.

  895. But another

  896. might object,

  897. hold on,

  898. yes,

  899. a generation

  900. of Israel

  901. perished in

  902. the wilderness,

  903. but what about

  904. the next

  905. generation?

  906. Didn't

  907. they enjoy

  908. rest?

  909. Didn't

  910. Joshua

  911. lead them

  912. into the

  913. promised land

  914. and God

  915. gave them

  916. the land

  917. and they

  918. enjoy,

  919. in fact,

  920. even if you

  921. look at the

  922. book of

  923. Joshua,

  924. the book

  925. of Joshua

  926. says,

  927. in chapter

  928. 21,

  929. verse 43

  930. and 44,

  931. thus the

  932. Lord God

  933. gave to

  934. Israel

  935. all the

  936. land that

  937. he swore

  938. to give

  939. their

  940. fathers

  941. and they

  942. took possession

  943. of it

  944. and they

  945. settled

  946. there and

  947. the Lord

  948. gave them

  949. rest on

  950. every side

  951. just as

  952. he'd sworn

  953. to their

  954. fathers.

  955. Didn't

  956. they get

  957. rest in

  958. the land

  959. after all?

  960. Well,

  961. the writer

  962. of the

  963. Hebrews

  964. replies to

  965. that potential

  966. objection

  967. in verse

  968. 8.

  969. If Joshua

  970. had given

  971. them rest,

  972. God would

  973. not have

  974. spoken of

  975. another day

  976. later on.

  977. So then

  978. there remains

  979. a Sabbath

  980. rest for

  981. the people

  982. of God.

  983. The

  984. reiteration

  985. of God's

  986. promise

  987. through

  988. David

  989. hundreds of

  990. years after

  991. Joshua

  992. demonstrated

  993. that the

  994. promise was

  995. incomplete.

  996. It

  997. demonstrated

  998. that the

  999. good things

  1000. Israel enjoyed

  1001. in the

  1002. land from

  1003. the time

  1004. of Joshua

  1005. onwards

  1006. didn't

  1007. exhaust

  1008. God's

  1009. promise of

  1010. rest.

  1011. that at

  1012. most it

  1013. was a

  1014. foretaste

  1015. but not

  1016. the true

  1017. rest

  1018. which God

  1019. offered his

  1020. people.

  1021. True rest

  1022. was not

  1023. temporal and

  1024. earthly

  1025. but eternal

  1026. and heavenly.

  1027. It's not

  1028. something that

  1029. can ever be

  1030. satisfied by

  1031. our present

  1032. fallen

  1033. broken world

  1034. world.

  1035. Whether in

  1036. the land

  1037. of Israel

  1038. or the

  1039. land of

  1040. Australia.

  1041. No matter

  1042. how good

  1043. your long

  1044. service leave

  1045. that's not

  1046. true rest.

  1047. No matter

  1048. how good

  1049. your retirement

  1050. that's not

  1051. true rest.

  1052. true rest.

  1053. Not even the

  1054. 12 weeks of

  1055. holidays a

  1056. year that

  1057. school teachers

  1058. get are

  1059. true rest

  1060. as I'm

  1061. sure they'll

  1062. testify.

  1063. True rest

  1064. is entering

  1065. the presence

  1066. of God

  1067. with

  1068. thanksgiving

  1069. with songs

  1070. of joy

  1071. and sharing

  1072. in his

  1073. rest.

  1074. rest.

  1075. And that

  1076. promise

  1077. remains

  1078. open.

  1079. The

  1080. promise of

  1081. rest

  1082. remains.

  1083. Verse 9

  1084. again.

  1085. There

  1086. remains a

  1087. Sabbath

  1088. rest for

  1089. the people

  1090. of God

  1091. for whoever

  1092. has entered

  1093. God's rest

  1094. has also

  1095. rested from

  1096. his works

  1097. as God

  1098. did from

  1099. his.

  1100. So the

  1101. main point

  1102. of this

  1103. brief

  1104. biblical

  1105. theology

  1106. of rest

  1107. is that

  1108. the promise

  1109. remains for

  1110. us today.

  1111. Indeed we

  1112. who live

  1113. after Christ

  1114. enjoy a

  1115. privileged

  1116. position

  1117. because all

  1118. of history

  1119. has been

  1120. building to

  1121. this point.

  1122. The goal

  1123. of life

  1124. anticipated

  1125. since

  1126. creation

  1127. promised to

  1128. Israel but

  1129. constantly

  1130. slipping out

  1131. of their

  1132. grasp.

  1133. Promised

  1134. again by

  1135. David,

  1136. by God

  1137. through

  1138. David.

  1139. That

  1140. promise of

  1141. rest is

  1142. offered to

  1143. us in

  1144. the gospel

  1145. of Jesus

  1146. Christ.

  1147. Come to

  1148. me,

  1149. Jesus

  1150. said,

  1151. all who

  1152. labour and

  1153. are heavy

  1154. laden,

  1155. and I

  1156. will give

  1157. you rest.

  1158. But what a

  1159. madness it

  1160. would be to

  1161. come to the

  1162. one who

  1163. gives rest

  1164. and yet

  1165. refuse to

  1166. enter the

  1167. rest he

  1168. gives.

  1169. So,

  1170. verse 11,

  1171. let us

  1172. therefore

  1173. strive to

  1174. enter that

  1175. rest so

  1176. that no

  1177. one may

  1178. fall by

  1179. the same

  1180. sort of

  1181. disobedience.

  1182. Consider all

  1183. that God's

  1184. rest means

  1185. in terms of

  1186. what we

  1187. leave behind

  1188. and in

  1189. terms of

  1190. what we

  1191. enter into.

  1192. we leave

  1193. behind labour

  1194. and struggle

  1195. and hardship.

  1196. We leave

  1197. behind grief

  1198. and pain

  1199. and tears

  1200. and death.

  1201. we leave

  1202. behind temptations

  1203. and stumbling

  1204. blocks.

  1205. We leave

  1206. behind loneliness.

  1207. We enter

  1208. into the

  1209. love of

  1210. God.

  1211. We enter

  1212. into his

  1213. joy and

  1214. gladness.

  1215. We enter

  1216. into a

  1217. life of

  1218. eternal

  1219. blessedness.

  1220. rest.

  1221. So,

  1222. let us

  1223. strive to

  1224. enter that

  1225. rest.

  1226. At a

  1227. cross-country

  1228. race in

  1229. 2013,

  1230. Kenyan

  1231. distance

  1232. runner,

  1233. Abel

  1234. Mutai,

  1235. was in

  1236. first place

  1237. approaching

  1238. the finish

  1239. line.

  1240. But as

  1241. Mutai

  1242. approached

  1243. the finish

  1244. line,

  1245. he was

  1246. confused

  1247. by the

  1248. signs

  1249. and

  1250. stopped

  1251. short,

  1252. a few

  1253. metres

  1254. short,

  1255. thinking

  1256. he'd

  1257. finished

  1258. the

  1259. race.

  1260. Spanish

  1261. athlete

  1262. Ivan

  1263. Fernandez

  1264. was in

  1265. second

  1266. place,

  1267. right

  1268. behind

  1269. Mutai.

  1270. He

  1271. could

  1272. easily

  1273. have

  1274. just

  1275. run

  1276. past

  1277. Mutai

  1278. and

  1279. finished

  1280. first.

  1281. Instead,

  1282. realising

  1283. what had

  1284. happened,

  1285. he started

  1286. shouting

  1287. at Mutai,

  1288. keep

  1289. running.

  1290. Mutai

  1291. didn't

  1292. understand

  1293. Spanish.

  1294. So

  1295. Fernandez

  1296. came up

  1297. behind

  1298. him,

  1299. speaking,

  1300. pointing,

  1301. pushing

  1302. him,

  1303. urging

  1304. him on,

  1305. so that

  1306. Mutai

  1307. could get

  1308. across the

  1309. finish

  1310. line

  1311. first.

  1312. There

  1313. remains a

  1314. Sabbath

  1315. rest for

  1316. the people

  1317. of God.

  1318. So let's

  1319. push one

  1320. another

  1321. towards

  1322. that

  1323. goal.

  1324. And in

  1325. this

  1326. day,

  1327. today,

  1328. while the

  1329. voice of

  1330. God is

  1331. heard,

  1332. let's

  1333. not

  1334. harden

  1335. our

  1336. hearts

  1337. to

  1338. it.

  1339. Verse

  1340. 12,

  1341. for the

  1342. word of

  1343. God

  1344. is

  1345. living

  1346. and

  1347. active,

  1348. sharper

  1349. than any

  1350. two-edged

  1351. sword,

  1352. piercing to

  1353. the division

  1354. of soul

  1355. and of

  1356. spirit,

  1357. of joints

  1358. and marrow,

  1359. and discerning

  1360. the thoughts

  1361. and intentions

  1362. of the

  1363. heart.

  1364. God's

  1365. word is

  1366. living and

  1367. active.

  1368. It's

  1369. powerful and

  1370. effective.

  1371. It will

  1372. accomplish the

  1373. purpose for

  1374. which he

  1375. sends it.

  1376. God's

  1377. word

  1378. penetrates to

  1379. the very

  1380. core of

  1381. our being,

  1382. judging the

  1383. thoughts and

  1384. attitudes of

  1385. our heart.

  1386. it leaves

  1387. us utterly

  1388. exposed.

  1389. Dave

  1390. asked the

  1391. question for

  1392. us.

  1393. Are these

  1394. words

  1395. hopeful

  1396. or are

  1397. they?

  1398. I can't

  1399. remember the

  1400. other word

  1401. Dave used.

  1402. Terrifying?

  1403. Fearful?

  1404. Fear-inducing?

  1405. Intimidating?

  1406. Thanks,

  1407. Dave.

  1408. Are these

  1409. words hopeful

  1410. or intimidating?

  1411. They sound

  1412. ominous,

  1413. don't they?

  1414. But this

  1415. is exactly

  1416. the instrument

  1417. we need for

  1418. our hearts.

  1419. Sin may

  1420. deceive us,

  1421. but it

  1422. can't deceive

  1423. God.

  1424. And the

  1425. word of

  1426. God is a

  1427. sharp

  1428. scalpel.

  1429. It slices

  1430. through our

  1431. pretenses and

  1432. rationalisations.

  1433. It reveals the

  1434. secret workings

  1435. of our

  1436. heart.

  1437. God cuts

  1438. away sin's

  1439. deceptions so

  1440. that we may

  1441. hold on to

  1442. the promise

  1443. of God.

  1444. So,

  1445. brothers and

  1446. sisters,

  1447. do you hear

  1448. the word of

  1449. God?

  1450. Do you hear

  1451. the word of

  1452. God's promise

  1453. drawing us

  1454. into his

  1455. rest?

  1456. Do you hear

  1457. the word of

  1458. God's

  1459. warning?

  1460. cutting away

  1461. our doubts

  1462. and unbelief?

  1463. Well,

  1464. let's heed

  1465. the warning.

  1466. Let's hold

  1467. on to the

  1468. promise

  1469. and let's

  1470. exhort

  1471. one another

  1472. daily

  1473. so that

  1474. all together

  1475. we might

  1476. reach that

  1477. goal.

  1478. Will you pray

  1479. with me?

  1480. Amen.

  1481. Heavenly Father,

  1482. we thank you

  1483. for the

  1484. promise of

  1485. rest that

  1486. still stands,

  1487. that all

  1488. who come to

  1489. Jesus and

  1490. trust in

  1491. him

  1492. and cling

  1493. to him

  1494. our

  1495. saviour,

  1496. our

  1497. Lord,

  1498. will enter

  1499. your rest.

  1500. We thank you

  1501. that this

  1502. promise is

  1503. certain.

  1504. We thank you

  1505. that it

  1506. doesn't depend

  1507. on us

  1508. but on our

  1509. saviour who

  1510. went before

  1511. us.

  1512. and so

  1513. we pray

  1514. for each

  1515. and every

  1516. one of us

  1517. here

  1518. that you

  1519. might guard

  1520. our hearts

  1521. from the

  1522. deceitfulness

  1523. of sin.

  1524. Please keep

  1525. us trusting

  1526. in Jesus

  1527. until the

  1528. very end

  1529. and help

  1530. us as a

  1531. church to

  1532. exhort and

  1533. encourage one

  1534. another in

  1535. this so

  1536. that none

  1537. of us might

  1538. stumble and

  1539. fall.

  1540. We ask

  1541. all of this

  1542. in Jesus

  1543. name.

  1544. Amen.
