  1. Good morning. So we're going to be reading from Hebrews chapter 4, starting at verse 14 and going through to chapter 5, verse 10.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  2. Since then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God.

  3. Let us hold fast our confession.

  4. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  5. but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  6. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  7. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

  8. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.

  9. Because of this, he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins, just as he does for those of the people.

  10. And no one takes this honour for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

  11. So also, Christ did not exhort himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

  12. You are my Son, today I have begotten you.

  13. As he says also in another place,

  14. You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.

  15. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications,

  16. with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death,

  17. and he was heard because of his reverence.

  18. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.

  19. And being made perfect, he became the source of all eternal salvation to all who obey him,

  20. being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  21. Thank you, everyone.

  22. There we go, I'm on.

  23. We couldn't have actually, I don't think we could have actually matched a better song with this passage today,

  24. so thanks, Musos.

  25. Well, two years ago, a remarkable survival story took place in the depths of the Amazon jungle.

  26. A light aircraft travelling with three adults and four kids just nosedived into the dense jungle in Colombia.

  27. All three adults died, sadly died pretty quickly,

  28. leaving four kids behind, all under 13 years of age, alone and fighting the odds to survive.

  29. The Colombian government mobilised a rescue force of elite commandos,

  30. indigenous trackers and sniffer dogs as well.

  31. And the search team looked everywhere for them, but they couldn't find them initially.

  32. In fact, it took them two weeks just to find the plane,

  33. only to realise the kids might still be alive.

  34. Then they used helicopters to fly over a vast area,

  35. and they had these mega speakers on the helicopters to broadcast a message

  36. from the children's grandmother,

  37. trying to encourage the kids to stay close to water, to stay safe.

  38. Forty days, 40 days after the plane crash,

  39. an indigenous tracker found all four kids barely alive,

  40. only five kilometres from the plane.

  41. After they received medical treatment, following the rescue,

  42. they uncovered why it had taken so long for the rescuers to find the kids.

  43. Even though they found clues along the way, like clothing items and footprints,

  44. it took them so long to find them.

  45. What they found out was they discovered before the accident,

  46. events had happened in their home life that meant the children were scared to go back home.

  47. So instead of running to the comfort and the safety of rescuers,

  48. they chose to hide the fear of their own life,

  49. because they thought things would get worse, not better, being found.

  50. Well, we've been digging into the book of Hebrews in recent weeks,

  51. and we've heard about the temptation present for Jewish believers at the time

  52. to turn and run from their faith as they experienced hardship and trial.

  53. Just like the four kids hiding from the rescue team,

  54. the Jewish believers were tempted to give up on the safety that they could find in Jesus.

  55. And, you know, I think we find ourselves very much in common

  56. with the Jewish believers here in Hebrews, and the kids as well in the story.

  57. In fact, we don't actually get a lot of detail in Hebrews

  58. on what this difficult situation was about.

  59. It looks like God's actually deliberately left it that way for us.

  60. But those Jews in Hebrews, these kids, they're not so different to us, are they?

  61. They're not so different to us.

  62. They got anxious and scared about their future,

  63. and they could get down about their present trials and temptations.

  64. Don't we do just the same thing?

  65. Perhaps you might think, and some people might argue,

  66. look, life's pretty good here in Australia.

  67. Like, you know, we can just whinge and complain about life.

  68. It's an Australian thing to do.

  69. Well, in many ways, we've got a great country.

  70. Like, you know, we can worship with freedom.

  71. We have some incredible tools and devices.

  72. Who doesn't have an Android or an iPhone or something like that?

  73. And we've got this super easy access nearly to whatever we want.

  74. Like, you can go online and watch a movie.

  75. You can online shop.

  76. You can go into the shops and get just about any food that you'd like these days.

  77. Yet, for all that, this generation is now being called the anxious generation.

  78. And family relationships and separations are in free fall.

  79. It's the worst it's ever been in our country.

  80. And we're living in a very individualistic and modern...

  81. ..a very individualistic society in our modern era.

  82. We have more ways to be connected than ever before,

  83. yet so many people are feeling so disconnected and lonely.

  84. So today, what we're doing is we're looking at why Jesus is better,

  85. why he's always worth running to,

  86. and why we can run to Jesus even when we think life is a total mess.

  87. Because even when we think life is a total mess, Jesus still gets it.

  88. He understands and he can deal with us gently because of who he is.

  89. And we're going to go through four reasons today that that's the case.

  90. Those four points are,

  91. Jesus was sinless and resisted all temptation.

  92. He's gentle and he can sympathise with our weakness.

  93. He was raised to life and appointed to rescue us.

  94. And he has modelled to us how to run to the Father

  95. even when it comes to life or death.

  96. Well, if you've got your Bibles there,

  97. let's start by turning to verse 14.

  98. Let's jump straight in.

  99. It says this,

  100. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,

  101. Jesus, the Son of God.

  102. Let us hold fast our confession.

  103. You'll notice, firstly, we have this powerful term.

  104. Jesus references himself as the great high priest.

  105. Now, I'm not sure for you,

  106. but I actually struggled in preparing for this to engage with this concept of priest.

  107. Yet, the further into this passage I went,

  108. it just became more and more clear.

  109. It's critical.

  110. For our understanding of Jesus,

  111. we need to know what that means.

  112. It's another dimension to who he is.

  113. And he's not just a high priest.

  114. He is the great high priest.

  115. So, what's so hard about getting the idea of a high priest?

  116. Firstly, it's a bit like a foreign language to us.

  117. You know, when we think of priest,

  118. we tend to think orthodoxy, institution,

  119. like the Catholic Church or the High Anglican Church.

  120. And, look, let's just call it,

  121. if we said priest bot or priest Calderwood,

  122. you'd probably have a laugh, right?

  123. You'd probably think, that's a bit weird.

  124. Dave Calderwood wouldn't be too impressed by that either.

  125. I think people have tried that on him.

  126. But, look, when we think of these institutions,

  127. like the Catholic Church or that High Anglican Church,

  128. it's hard not to consider recent history, isn't it?

  129. It's really hard.

  130. The spotlight has been put on priests

  131. for their abuse of their power and positions,

  132. most recently the sex abuse scandal

  133. that the Royal Commission brought into light.

  134. And it's done real damage to the view of clergy.

  135. And might I even say,

  136. the use of the name priest

  137. might even feel a little bit repulsive to us.

  138. So to try and get a clear picture

  139. and try and understand what we talk about

  140. with Old Testament priests

  141. and Jesus being the great high priest,

  142. we are talking about an extremely unique role,

  143. a holy calling at a time and place

  144. that God chose in history.

  145. And it was this time in history,

  146. the Israelite people in the Old Testament,

  147. he showed his grace in a unique way towards his people

  148. by having a selected person to represent the people to him.

  149. It was all about God's grace and mercy.

  150. And that's why the priests were installed as mediators.

  151. Yet for all the priests that came and went in Israel,

  152. the good and the bad,

  153. there was a common problem that plagued them all.

  154. And you see it as we touch down in 4 verse 15

  155. and 5 verse 3.

  156. They understood the weakness of the people stuck in sin,

  157. but they couldn't escape that same weakness themselves.

  158. Even they had to sacrifice for their own sins

  159. every single year.

  160. And Jesus, he was like these priests,

  161. but he was different.

  162. He is the ultimate,

  163. the great high priest

  164. because he is totally sinless.

  165. So we can run to Jesus

  166. because he is sinless

  167. and he resisted all temptation.

  168. Follow me with this in Hebrews 4.15

  169. where it says he is genuinely able

  170. to sympathise with our weakness.

  171. Now there is a real emphasis here

  172. and it picks up along these lines.

  173. It's basically saying that

  174. because Jesus resisted all temptation,

  175. he can sympathise with us

  176. like no other priest could

  177. have ever done before him.

  178. In fact, like no other person ever has.

  179. Because in every respect,

  180. Jesus has been tempted.

  181. Meaning in every single way,

  182. he has known temptation,

  183. but he's never given in.

  184. So he's in the perfect position

  185. to understand exactly

  186. what you and I are going through today.

  187. Well, someone might argue,

  188. well, look, Jesus never gave in to sin.

  189. So how does he really

  190. actually know what it felt like?

  191. Well, in the story I told you earlier

  192. about the kids surviving in the Amazon,

  193. the oldest child,

  194. a 13-year-old girl,

  195. is credited with keeping alive

  196. her younger siblings.

  197. They were nine, four,

  198. and 11 months.

  199. Look at that,

  200. an 11-month-year-old

  201. survived 40 days.

  202. So when she was interviewed

  203. after the event,

  204. she said at one point

  205. she was tempted to walk out

  206. and leave the three of them.

  207. And she did.

  208. She left briefly for 20 minutes,

  209. but then she came back.

  210. Now, for the sake of her own survival,

  211. she would have known

  212. it would have been easier

  213. to make it alive without them.

  214. She was having to share the food.

  215. They had to split it between them.

  216. But she never would have known.

  217. If she walked away,

  218. she never would have known

  219. what it would have been like

  220. 10 minutes later,

  221. an hour later,

  222. or a day later.

  223. So to this day,

  224. probably better than anyone

  225. here in this room,

  226. she would understand

  227. how great the temptation can be

  228. to sacrifice your own family

  229. for yourself.

  230. She would know that better

  231. than all of us.

  232. It's just like this with Jesus, right?

  233. He never laid down or walked away.

  234. He endured without giving up.

  235. So therefore,

  236. he knows the strength of temptation

  237. better than any of us.

  238. And it's only because

  239. he can better understand temptation

  240. that he can sympathise with us

  241. like no one else ever could.

  242. Now, the word sympathise here is key.

  243. We need to understand it.

  244. It's the basic idea.

  245. It's the joining of two words,

  246. and that is with and to suffer.

  247. So it's not just a feeling.

  248. Sympathise is not just a feeling.

  249. It often gets thought of that way.

  250. It's actually a depth

  251. of togetherness in pain.

  252. It's saying in our pain,

  253. Jesus is pained.

  254. Not that he is threatened by it.

  255. He's not threatened by it.

  256. He's God.

  257. But in the sense that

  258. he can't help but be drawn to it.

  259. In fact,

  260. because he's been on the journey

  261. before himself

  262. with temptation and pain,

  263. in his love,

  264. he cannot be held back

  265. when he sees us there.

  266. I think this just absolutely

  267. blows out of the water,

  268. the idea that only

  269. when life is going well,

  270. God is there with me

  271. or his favour is on me.

  272. Ever heard anyone say that before?

  273. No.

  274. In fact,

  275. when you are in a mess,

  276. Jesus is drawn to help you.

  277. He knows what it's like

  278. to be thirsty,

  279. to be hungry,

  280. to be homeless,

  281. rejected,

  282. misunderstood,

  283. embarrassed,

  284. shamed,

  285. tortured

  286. and ultimately killed.

  287. So,

  288. we can run to Jesus

  289. because he is gentle

  290. and he can sympathise

  291. with our weakness.

  292. Jesus knows

  293. we get tunnel vision.

  294. We get tunnel vision

  295. big time

  296. when life's a mess.

  297. He gets it.

  298. We can start to question

  299. and doubt

  300. that what he says is true

  301. and who he is

  302. is good.

  303. Jesus was just like us

  304. except instead of being

  305. sinfully weak,

  306. he was sinlessly weak.

  307. Hebrews 5 verse 2

    Hebrews 5:2

  308. says these words,

  309. he can deal gently

  310. with the ignorant

  311. and wayward

  312. since he himself

  313. is beset

  314. with weakness.

  315. Now,

  316. I really like

  317. Dan Ortland's take on this.

  318. A few of you might have read

  319. the book Gentle and Lowly

  320. but this is what he says.

  321. The point is

  322. that Jesus deals gently

  323. and only gently

  324. with all sinners

  325. who come to him

  326. irrespective of their

  327. particular offence

  328. and just how heinous it is.

  329. What elicits tenderness

  330. from Jesus

  331. is not the severity

  332. of the sin

  333. but whether the sinner

  334. comes to him.

  335. The key

  336. is coming

  337. and drawing near

  338. to him

  339. and the language

  340. of drawing near

  341. is reminiscent

  342. of the worship

  343. of Old Testament Israel

  344. where people

  345. would draw near

  346. to God.

  347. at the tabernacle

  348. or the temple

  349. and the priests

  350. that had even more

  351. intimate access.

  352. They drew near

  353. to the altar.

  354. The high priest

  355. having the greatest

  356. access of all

  357. drawing near

  358. to the ark,

  359. the holy place,

  360. the holy of holies,

  361. symbolically God's throne.

  362. So the wonder

  363. of 4 verse 16

  364. is that we

  365. can all approach.

  366. That we can all

  367. approach

  368. all the way

  369. and we can do so

  370. with confidence

  371. and that the throne

  372. we approach

  373. is not a throne

  374. of judgment

  375. and condemnation

  376. but one of grace

  377. and mercy

  378. with Jesus

  379. as the high priest.

  380. On the other hand,

  381. if we don't

  382. come to Jesus

  383. because we don't

  384. know Jesus,

  385. just like if the priest

  386. didn't bring the sacrifice

  387. for the people,

  388. we have a very

  389. different result.

  390. Jesus'

  391. lamb-like tenderness

  392. cannot be extended

  393. to us.

  394. Instead,

  395. we would only know

  396. the fierceness

  397. of a lion-like judgment.

  398. A few years ago,

  399. I spent some time

  400. working at the

  401. Mater Hospital

  402. in the drug

  403. and alcohol team

  404. and a rare opportunity

  405. came up for me

  406. to sit in on

  407. a two-week program

  408. to help people

  409. recover from

  410. drug and alcohol

  411. addiction.

  412. And in this

  413. two-week program,

  414. people recovering

  415. from addiction,

  416. they watched videos,

  417. they listened to speakers

  418. and generally shared ideas

  419. how they could be

  420. motivated towards

  421. long-lasting change.

  422. They'd seen

  423. the wreck and ruin

  424. that drugs and alcohol

  425. had brought to their lives,

  426. an addiction to drugs

  427. and alcohol.

  428. One of those days,

  429. there was an unforgettable

  430. speaker who introduced

  431. himself and he told

  432. the group this.

  433. He said,

  434. I'm a recovering

  435. alcoholic.

  436. I haven't touched

  437. a drop of alcohol

  438. in over two decades.

  439. When he said that,

  440. it was like you could

  441. hear a pin drop

  442. in the room.

  443. Everyone was listening.

  444. He went on to say,

  445. I'm still a recovering

  446. alcoholic because I know

  447. if I go back to it,

  448. it will own me.

  449. And he made

  450. this observation.

  451. He made this observation.

  452. He realised,

  453. and he said,

  454. he told us

  455. about this constant

  456. anchor

  457. for a few people

  458. like him

  459. that had been

  460. addicted

  461. but had now stopped.

  462. he told us

  463. it was the relationship

  464. with Jesus

  465. that made

  466. all the difference.

  467. That's what Jesus

  468. is like in his tenderness.

  469. Even those battling

  470. the worst addictions

  471. and hidden scars

  472. can look to him

  473. for all they need.

  474. Isn't that the kind

  475. of gentleness

  476. we all look for

  477. in a relationship?

  478. Someone who can

  479. see all our flaws

  480. yet love us anyway?

  481. It's one of the

  482. deepest longings

  483. we all have

  484. to be fully known

  485. with all our failures

  486. and mistakes

  487. and yet fully loved.

  488. How could we not

  489. feel drawn

  490. to that kind of love?

  491. What's so extraordinary

  492. about this passage

  493. is it's not just

  494. in Jesus' humanity

  495. he reaches us

  496. in this way.

  497. In Hebrews 5 verse 5

    Hebrews 5:5

  498. we hear these words.

  499. So also Christ

  500. did not

  501. sorry I'll start again.

  502. So also Christ

  503. did not exalt himself

  504. to be made

  505. a high priest

  506. but was appointed

  507. by him

  508. who said to him

  509. you are my son

  510. today

  511. I have

  512. forgotten you.

  513. So he says also

  514. in another place

  515. you are a priest

  516. forever after the

  517. order of Melchizedek.

  518. So again we hear

  519. what totally set

  520. Jesus apart

  521. as unique

  522. to any other

  523. priest before him.

  524. This kind of love

  525. and gentleness

  526. began in the

  527. halls of heaven.

  528. In 5 verse 5

  529. we hear Jesus

  530. is appointed

  531. by God the Father.

  532. Jesus was

  533. hand selected

  534. by the Father

  535. to become

  536. human like us

  537. and in total

  538. humility

  539. Jesus went

  540. before the cross

  541. knowing the

  542. will of the

  543. Father

  544. that special

  545. selection

  546. would mean

  547. he would be

  548. begotten for us.

  549. What does

  550. begotten actually

  551. mean?

  552. Well the word

  553. begotten

  554. is actually

  555. first mentioned

  556. as a promise

  557. in Psalm 2

    Psalms 2:7

  558. verse 7

  559. so you can look

  560. there if you like

  561. but the answer

  562. for what it means

  563. actually comes

  564. from Acts 13

    Acts 13:32–34

  565. verse 32

  566. to 34

  567. and it's

  568. where Paul

  569. is speaking

  570. to fellow

  571. believers

  572. and he speaks

  573. to the promise

  574. being fulfilled

  575. that Jesus

  576. would be

  577. raised to life

  578. or resurrected

  579. for us

  580. so forgiveness

  581. of sins

  582. could be preached

  583. to us.

  584. So we can run

  585. to Jesus

  586. because he was

  587. raised to life

  588. and appointed

  589. by God

  590. for that very

  591. purpose

  592. for us

  593. and his

  594. ultimate

  595. tenderness

  596. and mercy

  597. came to us

  598. only because

  599. he was appointed

  600. to be

  601. forgotten for us.

  602. At the

  603. ultimate cost

  604. to Jesus

  605. with his

  606. life

  607. he set

  608. in motion

  609. a change

  610. that forever

  611. put sin

  612. to the sword

  613. that forever

  614. made Jesus

  615. the great

  616. high priest.

  617. Hebrews 1

    Hebrews 1:3

  618. verse 3

  619. says

  620. after the

  621. purification

  622. of sins

  623. he sat down

  624. at the right

  625. hand of majesty

  626. on high.

  627. This is the

  628. throne of grace

  629. in verse 16

  630. the very one

  631. we can now

  632. approach boldly

  633. because of

  634. God's appointment

  635. for Jesus

  636. to give us

  637. a grace

  638. and tenderness

  639. we never

  640. deserved.

  641. Now there's

  642. more to be said

  643. about the role

  644. of Melchizedek

  645. and I'm glad

  646. Lockheed touched

  647. on it in the

  648. kids talk today

  649. Jesus is compared

  650. to his lineage

  651. and it's an

  652. important area

  653. but we're not

  654. going there today

  655. because David

  656. will be talking

  657. to that in more

  658. depth in a

  659. couple of

  660. weeks.

  661. It pops up

  662. again in

  663. Hebrews a

  664. couple of

  665. times and

  666. much more

  667. in a couple

  668. of weeks.

  669. Well we

  670. started talking

  671. today about

  672. how it's easy

  673. for our

  674. intuition to

  675. tell us that

  676. when things get

  677. difficult in

  678. life we're

  679. more alone

  680. than ever.

  681. The good

  682. news we hear

  683. in God's

  684. word is there

  685. is a different

  686. story when

  687. you come to

  688. Jesus.

  689. And look I

  690. think modern

  691. psychology

  692. modern psychology

  693. points out

  694. helpfully that

  695. we can have a

  696. tendency to

  697. fight, flight

  698. or freeze when

  699. we get

  700. overwhelmed.

  701. You'd notice

  702. that you know

  703. like if you

  704. were shocked

  705. and stood

  706. next to a

  707. snake you're

  708. either going to

  709. want to kill

  710. it, run away

  711. or you'll be

  712. frozen in the

  713. moment.

  714. That's what

  715. happens when

  716. you get

  717. overwhelmed.

  718. It's an

  719. entirely typical

  720. human instinct

  721. when trouble

  722. comes for

  723. our brain

  724. to like

  725. kick into

  726. survival mode.

  727. The alarm

  728. switches, we

  729. go into

  730. survival mode.

  731. But what I

  732. love about

  733. Hebrews, what

  734. I love about

  735. this section

  736. of scripture

  737. is Jesus

  738. shows us an

  739. entirely different

  740. picture, an

  741. entirely different

  742. way of reacting

  743. to trouble.

  744. He shows us

  745. through his own

  746. life how he

  747. ran to the

  748. father even

  749. when it's

  750. life or death.

  751. Verse 7 to

  752. 9 says this,

  753. please follow

  754. with me in

  755. your Bibles,

  756. in the days

  757. of his

  758. flesh, Jesus

  759. offered up

  760. prayers and

  761. supplications

  762. with loud

  763. cries and

  764. tears to

  765. him who

  766. was able to

  767. save him

  768. from death.

  769. And he

  770. was heard

  771. because of

  772. his reverence.

  773. Although he

  774. was a son,

  775. he learned

  776. obedience

  777. through what

  778. he suffered.

  779. Hear the

  780. pain in

  781. these words

  782. with loud

  783. cries and

  784. tears,

  785. with loud

  786. cries and

  787. tears.

  788. As Jesus

  789. prepared in

  790. the garden

  791. of

  792. Gethsemane

  793. for death,

  794. he prayed.

  795. Can you

  796. imagine the

  797. temptation for

  798. Jesus to

  799. demand a

  800. different result?

  801. He could

  802. have called

  803. a legion of

  804. angels to

  805. his rescue,

  806. but he

  807. didn't.

  808. With

  809. meekness and

  810. gentleness,

  811. Jesus stood

  812. before the

  813. father.

  814. In total

  815. humility, he

  816. went before

  817. us.

  818. And he

  819. did that so

  820. we no longer

  821. need to fix

  822. our eyes on

  823. our sin

  824. anymore, but

  825. on him.

  826. We've

  827. talked about

  828. temptation in

  829. Hebrews today.

  830. Isn't it

  831. interesting in

  832. the garden of

  833. Gethsemane that

  834. Jesus told his

  835. disciples not

  836. just once but

  837. twice to

  838. pray.

  839. Watch and

  840. pray that you

  841. may not enter

  842. into temptation.

  843. Even when the

  844. disciples did not

  845. listen to Jesus

  846. and kept

  847. sleeping on the

  848. very cusp of

  849. Jesus being

  850. betrayed, he

  851. offered mercy to

  852. the disciples.

  853. He said he

  854. understood the

  855. spirit was

  856. willing, but

  857. the flesh was

  858. weak.

  859. How much

  860. more will he

  861. do for us

  862. now that he's

  863. passed into the

  864. heavens on the

  865. throne of grace

  866. and calls us to

  867. draw near to

  868. him?

  869. There is

  870. something else to

  871. notice at

  872. Gethsemane.

  873. Jesus had

  874. help from the

  875. father and he

  876. had companionship

  877. from the

  878. disciples, even

  879. though they did

  880. a pretty dodgy

  881. job, right?

  882. Just when he

  883. needed them the

  884. most, but he

  885. still had their

  886. companionship.

  887. So Jesus drew

  888. near vertically

  889. and horizontally.

  890. I think this is a

  891. good application

  892. point.

  893. I think we

  894. should stop and

  895. ask, are we

  896. doing the same or

  897. are we battling

  898. things alone,

  899. trying to solve

  900. things ourselves?

  901. Sometimes during

  902. difficulties we're

  903. tempted to throw

  904. in the lot and

  905. look somewhere else

  906. than Jesus.

  907. So a word of

  908. encouragement, if

  909. you find yourself

  910. in the storm, don't

  911. let your situation,

  912. your location,

  913. your relationships,

  914. tunnel vision you

  915. into thinking you're

  916. alone and God

  917. hasn't showed up.

  918. The devil wants

  919. us to question

  920. the presence, the

  921. goodness, the

  922. faithfulness and

  923. the grace of

  924. God.

  925. Howard Hendricks, he

  926. was a professor

  927. and a preacher

  928. yesteryear, last

  929. century.

  930. He makes the

  931. observation, I

  932. think it's a really

  933. good observation.

  934. Every believer, he

  935. says, needs three

  936. types of

  937. relationships.

  938. We need a

  939. pool who can

  940. mentor and

  941. encourage, a

  942. pool who can

  943. mentor and

  944. challenge us.

  945. We need a

  946. Barnabas who

  947. can come

  948. alongside and

  949. encourage us.

  950. And we need a

  951. Timothy, someone we

  952. can pour our life

  953. into.

  954. So say that again,

  955. we need a

  956. pool who can

  957. mentor and

  958. challenge us.

  959. We need a

  960. Barnabas who can

  961. come alongside and

  962. encourage us.

  963. And we need a

  964. Timothy, someone we

  965. can pour our life

  966. into.

  967. I like this

  968. illustration because

  969. when we run to

  970. Jesus and grasp

  971. his gentleness, it

  972. can't help but

  973. change in how we

  974. think and

  975. behave and

  976. flow through

  977. what we do.

  978. And I think it's

  979. only natural for

  980. that to flow

  981. through to others

  982. when we experience

  983. and know Jesus

  984. gentleness to us.

  985. Drawing near and

  986. understanding Jesus

  987. mercy and

  988. gentleness, it's a

  989. community project.

  990. So by extension as

  991. believers, we need

  992. mentoring and

  993. challenging by

  994. others.

  995. We need those next

  996. to us who can come

  997. alongside and

  998. encourage us.

  999. And we need

  1000. others we can

  1001. mentor and grow,

  1002. who we can share

  1003. Jesus'

  1004. gentleness with.

  1005. So if these are

  1006. not marks you find

1007. in your life as a

  1008. believer today, I

  1009. want you to

  1010. encourage not just

  1011. to consider finding

  1012. these relationships,

  1013. but make it your

  1014. goal.

  1015. Make it your goal

  1016. to work on that

  1017. today.

  1018. And above all,

  1019. keep your eyes on

  1020. his tenderness and

  1021. run to him.

  1022. Let's pray

  1023. together.

  1024. Father God, we

  1025. thank you for the

  1026. confidence we can

  1027. have to draw near

  1028. to you, knowing

  1029. that you love

  1030. helping us no

  1031. matter what mess or

  1032. trouble we find

  1033. ourselves in.

  1034. We stand in awe

  1035. that you are the

  1036. great high priest,

  1037. totally sinless,

  1038. that resisted all

  1039. temptation so we

  1040. might have direct

  1041. access to knowing

  1042. your gentleness and

  1043. mercy today.

  1044. We ask you might

  1045. help us find

  1046. believers that can

  1047. mentor, encourage,

  1048. and we can grow

  1049. in understanding

  1050. these wonderful

  1051. truths together.

  1052. In Jesus' name,

  1053. Amen.
