  1. Good morning. I'll be reading from Hebrews chapter 8 from the beginning.

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  2. So now the point in what we are saying is this.

  3. We have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven,

  4. a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

  5. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices.

  6. Thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.

  7. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all,

  8. since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law.

  9. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things.

  10. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying,

  11. See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain.

  12. But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old.

  13. As the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

  14. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

  15. For he finds fault with them when he says,

  16. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,

  17. when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

  18. Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

  19. For they did not continue in my covenant.

  20. And so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

  21. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel.

  22. After those days, declares the Lord,

  23. I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts.

  24. And I will be their God and they shall be my people.

  25. And they shall not teach each other his neighbor and each other, each one his brother, saying,

  26. Know the Lord, for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest.

  27. For I will be merciful towards their iniquities and I will remember their sins no more.

  28. In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete.

  29. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

  30. To be human is to be made for relationships.

  31. That's very obvious.

  32. But we're made for personal, intimate relationships.

  33. In which we're loved unconditionally.

  34. I guess every relationship really begins on that basis, doesn't it?

  35. Whether we're talking about friendships or marriage or the relationship between parents and children.

  36. That unconditional love is what we long for and crave.

  37. But the harsh reality is that even the best and closest of our relationships very easily and often quickly sort of sink back into being transactional.

  38. Not unconditional.

  39. And by transactional I mean the relationship goes something like this.

  40. I will only do for you certain things when I'm sure that you will respond to me by doing certain things that I want.

  41. That's a transaction.

  42. And when we get to that point we find ourselves in a real tangle.

  43. Because I still want and even demand that others, this other significant person, love me unconditionally.

  44. While I'm heavily transactional towards them.

  45. It's a very unsatisfying form of love.

  46. I would actually argue that it's a destructive form of love.

  47. Now, take another step with me.

  48. Because I think the same process can easily happen.

  49. Can easily shape our desire for a personal relationship with God.

  50. So, it goes like this.

  51. We know our imperfections.

  52. We know our own failure.

  53. So, when we think of a relationship with God, we actually want and need God to love us unconditionally.

  54. But in response, we so easily become transactional.

  55. That is, we do things for God and to God that we think will secure the things we want from God.

  56. And in the end, we don't actually love God for who he is.

  57. For his own beauty.

  58. We love him for what we think we can get from him.

  59. And we do acts of love.

  60. In inverted commas.

  61. To secure those things that we think we need and want.

  62. We can actually read God's word.

  63. We can form strong beliefs and emotional commitments

  64. about the things we think we need to do to please God and keep him happy.

  65. Even though those things may be completely wrong.

  66. And then we get in a tangle with our relationship with God.

  67. If all we do is respond or relate to God according to how we interpret what God says,

  68. how we interpret what God says,

  69. then we become religious.

  70. And we'll give expression to our religion

  71. either through formal religious rituals

  72. like might happen at a church like this on Sunday morning.

  73. going to church,

  74. maybe observing Lent,

  75. taking the sacraments,

  76. whatever it is.

  77. Or we might do it through a private system

  78. of beliefs and practices.

  79. Oftentimes, something picked up as a child.

  80. So we try to be good,

  81. believing that we can be good.

  82. Good enough for God.

  83. Or when life gets tough,

  84. we say our prayers.

  85. As if that's the key

  86. that will unlock God's blessing for us.

  87. And so on and so forth.

  88. Once a person is on the religious pathway,

  89. then I think meaningful personal relationship with God

  90. is lost.

  91. Or at the very least,

  92. is substituted for transactions.

  93. As I said before,

  94. it's a very unsatisfying form of love.

  95. Dare I even say destructive.

  96. Now,

  97. hopefully that introduction will help us

  98. come into the notions

  99. that are in Hebrews chapter 8 this morning,

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  100. especially the word covenant.

  101. because as we move into the Bible generally,

  102. and Hebrews in particular,

  103. then I need to say

  104. that God hates religion.

  105. His salvation plan

  106. has only ever been

  107. to have personal,

  108. intimate, rich relationship

  109. with his people.

  110. I'm going to just give you

  111. a very potted summary

  112. of the Old Testament

  113. in the next couple of minutes.

  114. From the very start,

  115. from God's creation,

  116. the end point of God's creative work

  117. was rest.

  118. Now,

  119. when you dig into what the word rest is,

  120. we see it in Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  121. it is God's people

  122. in God's place

  123. enjoying

  124. God's special blessing.

  125. The place?

  126. Garden of Eden.

  127. enjoying

  128. personal relationships

  129. with God.

  130. Enjoying

  131. God himself.

  132. Remember,

  133. Adam walked with God

  134. in the cool of the afternoon

  135. or the evening,

  136. whatever it was.

  137. That's a statement

  138. of personal relationship.

  139. Then Genesis 3,

  140. God's people chose

  141. to despise that relationship

  142. with God

  143. and do their own thing.

  144. This fall

  145. into sin,

  146. as it's called,

  147. or rebellion,

  148. just messed up everything

  149. and destroyed

  150. personal relationship

  151. with God.

  152. But even as God

  153. distanced himself

  154. from his rebellious people

  155. by removing them

  156. from the Garden of Eden,

  157. his special place of blessing,

  158. even as he was doing that,

  159. he promises

  160. or covenants.

  161. There's the first mention

  162. of that word.

  163. He promises

  164. or covenants.

  165. And that's what a covenant is

  166. in the simplest form.

  167. It's just a promise.

  168. God covenants

  169. to do what was needed

  170. to restore

  171. personal relationship

  172. with his people.

  173. And we pick up then

  174. the first phrase

  175. that said repeatedly

  176. throughout the Old Testament,

  177. once again,

  178. I will be your God

  179. and you will be my people

  180. and I will deal

  181. gently with you

  182. and bless you.

  183. That's a statement

  184. of unconditional love.

  185. Personal relationship.

  186. And ultimately,

  187. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:15

  188. verse 15,

  189. tells us that

  190. God's covenant promise

  191. would be delivered

  192. by a special descendant

  193. of Adam and Eve

  194. who would crush

  195. Satan

  196. and restore

  197. God's people

  198. to rest.

  199. The crusher

  200. would be the one

  201. who would come

  202. and restore

  203. the personal relationship

  204. with God

  205. that they were created

  206. to enjoy.

  207. That promised crusher

  208. we know

  209. as Jesus.

  210. And the single story

  211. of the Bible

  212. from Genesis 3

  213. to the time of Jesus

  214. is built around

  215. how God uses

  216. nation Israel

  217. to deliver

  218. his covenant promise.

  219. of renewed relationship

  220. in and through Jesus.

  221. Every aspect

  222. of God's,

  223. the life of God's people

  224. in the Old Testament

  225. was built around

  226. God's covenant promise.

  227. And the extent

  228. of God's commitment

  229. to restoring relationship

  230. and fellowship

  231. with his people

  232. is seen after the Exodus

  233. particularly.

  234. That becomes,

  235. as it were,

  236. the touchstone

  237. or the go-to passage

  238. to understand

  239. what it means

  240. to say

  241. God wants to be back

  242. in relationship

  243. with his people.

  244. And the story there

  245. is having brought

  246. his people

  247. to himself,

  248. there's the movement,

  249. bringing his alienated people

  250. to himself

  251. from Egypt,

  252. he restates

  253. his covenant promise

  254. in the terms,

  255. I will be your God

  256. and you will be my people.

  257. loved despite

  258. your rebellion,

  259. enjoying the good life

  260. of fellowship

  261. and blessing

  262. with him

  263. despite your rebellion.

  264. And from there

  265. in Exodus

  266. and Leviticus,

  267. God puts in place

  268. all the infrastructure,

  269. if you want to call it that,

  270. to make sure

  271. that that relationship

  272. is a reality.

  273. He sends prophets

  274. to remind

  275. God's people

  276. of the promise

  277. on offer,

  278. the beautiful relationship

  279. that he was offering.

  280. He sends leaders,

  281. eventually the kings,

  282. to model

  283. what that good life

  284. of blessing

  285. looked like

  286. and to lead them

  287. into it.

  288. He said that he would

  289. come to his people

  290. and live among them

  291. and that's the idea

  292. of the tent

  293. or the tabernacle

  294. and then later

  295. the temple

  296. where God expresses

  297. his commitment

  298. to his people.

  299. He comes to them

  300. and lives among

  301. his dirty,

  302. sinful people.

  303. A demonstration

  304. of personal commitment,

  305. sorry,

  306. a demonstration

  307. of commitment

  308. to personal relationship.

  309. And then he said

  310. he would set up

  311. the sacrificial system

  312. and the sacrificial system

  313. is my special provision

  314. for my dirty people

  315. so I can keep on

  316. fellowshipping with them

  317. as a clean God.

  318. It will remind them

  319. of my grace

  320. and mercy towards them

  321. and remind them

  322. that this relationship

  323. cannot function

  324. until sin has been

  325. addressed and dealt with.

  326. And I'll appoint priests,

  327. says the Lord,

  328. God.

  329. And they will

  330. bring two alienated

  331. parties together,

  332. the clean God

  333. and his dirty people,

  334. highlighting God's

  335. grace and mercy

  336. to them

  337. and allowing animal

  338. sacrifices

  339. for their sin.

  340. He would spell out

  341. in detail,

  342. he said,

  343. what we call

  344. the law.

  345. He would spell out

  346. in detail

  347. how the relationship

  348. can thrive.

  349. Now we think of law

  350. as restrictive

  351. and negative

  352. but not so.

  353. God's law

  354. was really

  355. positive parameters

  356. spelled around

  357. the relationship.

  358. You know,

  359. if the relationship

  360. is going to continue

  361. this is how you

  362. need to be acting.

  363. This is how

  364. I want you to act

  365. so that we might

  366. continue to enjoy

  367. relationship

  368. and fellowship together.

  369. I'm your God

  370. and you're my people.

  371. But,

  372. despite all

  373. God's wonderful

  374. provision

  375. to make real

  376. his promise

  377. or covenant

  378. of relationship,

  379. there was a massive

  380. and ongoing problem

  381. that just kept

  382. making the whole thing

  383. fall over.

  384. The heart of the problem?

  385. The problem of the heart.

  386. God's people

  387. repeatedly

  388. forgot

  389. what God's

  390. provision

  391. symbolized

  392. or pointed to.

  393. They pointed

  394. to God's

  395. gracious

  396. and merciful

  397. efforts

  398. to be in

  399. personal fellowship

  400. with his

  401. sinful people.

  402. And so,

  403. repeatedly

  404. through the Old Testament,

  405. meaningful relationship

  406. with God

  407. was lost

  408. as they settled

  409. into a legalistic

  410. or transactional

  411. way of responding

  412. to God.

  413. In other words,

  414. they forgot

  415. all of

  416. God's commitment,

  417. all of God's promise

  418. to be in

  419. personal relationship

  420. with them,

  421. all the things

  422. that God

  423. had put in place

  424. to make sure

  425. that happened,

  426. and they just

  427. went back

  428. to ticking

  429. boxes.

  430. We need

  431. to do

  432. this

  433. and this

  434. and this

  435. to unlock

  436. the things

  437. we want

  438. from God.

  439. And repeatedly

  440. through the Old Testament,

  441. God's

  442. pinged his people

  443. and his priests

  444. saying,

  445. yeah,

  446. there's no doubt

  447. you guys are doing

  448. all the right things,

  449. but it's making me sick

  450. because you're doing

  451. all the right things

  452. with bad attitudes,

  453. bad thinking,

  454. bad motives.

  455. And in fact,

  456. this is my words,

  457. not God's words.

  458. In effect,

  459. God said,

  460. I don't do

  461. transactional

  462. relationship.

  463. Now,

  464. it's into that

  465. massive problem

  466. that Hebrews

  467. steps

  468. and shows us

  469. the perfection

  470. of Jesus.

  471. And as we see

  472. the perfection

  473. of Jesus,

  474. we have exposed

  475. ever so clearly

  476. the weakness

  477. and,

  478. using the language

  479. of Hebrews,

  480. the shadowy

  481. nature

  482. of everything

  483. that went before him.

  484. See,

  485. God sent

  486. prophet

  487. after prophet

  488. prophet

  489. with the same

  490. promise

  491. of relationship.

  492. But none

  493. of the prophets

  494. were able

  495. to make God's

  496. word penetrate

  497. through the minds

  498. and into the hearts

  499. of God's people.

  500. At times,

  501. they chose

  502. not to listen.

  503. At times,

  504. they preferred

  505. to protect

  506. their own idea,

  507. their own belief

  508. about what God

  509. wanted

  510. and act

  511. in the light

  512. of that.

  513. The prophets

  514. were weak

  515. in that sense.

  516. God sent

  517. leader

  518. after leader,

  519. king

  520. after king,

  521. but each

  522. king showed

  523. that they were

  524. unable

  525. to subdue

  526. God's

  527. unruly people

  528. because their

  529. unruly hearts

  530. were just

  531. too tough

  532. to crack.

  533. They were

  534. unable,

  535. therefore,

  536. to lead them

  537. into God's

  538. place of rest

  539. or relationship.

  540. Endless

  541. priests

  542. offered

  543. endless

  544. sacrifices

  545. in a

  546. physically

  547. impressive

  548. temple,

  549. but it only

  550. made God

  551. angry

  552. because in

  553. God's eyes,

  554. their religious

  555. practices

  556. were just

  557. a performance.

  558. a pretense.

  559. Jeremiah

  560. and other

  561. prophets

  562. actually

  563. called them

  564. that,

  565. a pretense

  566. of valuing

  567. relationship

  568. with God

  569. while their

  570. hearts

  571. were far

  572. from loving

  573. him.

  574. In other

  575. words,

  576. they loved

  577. what they

  578. thought they

  579. would get

  580. from God,

  581. but they

  582. didn't love

  583. God himself.

  584. That's

  585. transactional.

  586. And it's

  587. horrible.

  588. Now,

  589. listen carefully

  590. here because

  591. the problem

  592. was not

  593. in the

  594. things God

  595. put in

  596. place.

  597. The problem

  598. was the

  599. heart,

  600. in the

  601. hearts,

  602. of God's

  603. people

  604. who were

  605. unable

  606. and unwilling

  607. to engage

  608. with those

  609. structures that

  610. God put in

  611. place that

  612. was meant

  613. to point

  614. them to

  615. Jesus,

  616. point them

  617. to the

  618. Lord,

  619. and point

  620. them to

  621. grace and

  622. mercy.

  623. they

  624. couldn't

  625. use those

  626. structures as

  627. they were

  628. intended,

  629. as reminders

  630. of God's

  631. commitment to

  632. do for his

  633. people what

  634. they could

  635. never do

  636. for themselves.

  637. And

  638. against that

  639. is the

  640. perfection of

  641. Jesus.

  642. Jesus.

  643. he is

  644. what all

  645. the Old

  646. Testament

  647. structures

  648. were shadows

  649. of.

  650. In a

  651. sense,

  652. the law

  653. was the

  654. shadow which

  655. Jesus was the

  656. reality of.

  657. The temple

  658. was the

  659. shadow Jesus

  660. was the

  661. reality of.

  662. The

  663. prophets,

  664. priests,

  665. and kings,

  666. they were

  667. the shadow

  668. of which

  669. Jesus was

  670. the reality.

  671. He is the

  672. reality that

  673. all those

  674. things pointed

  675. to.

  676. He is

  677. God's

  678. perfect

  679. prophet,

  680. perfect king,

  681. and perfect

  682. priest.

  683. He is

  684. God's

  685. temple.

  686. He is

  687. the place

  688. we meet

  689. God.

  690. He is

  691. the perfect

  692. sacrifice that

  693. covers all

  694. sins.

  695. We saw

  696. that last

  697. week in

  698. chapter 7.

  699. He is

  700. the one

  701. who,

  702. therefore,

  703. by covering

  704. all our

  705. sins,

  706. allows

  707. personal

  708. relationship

  709. with God

  710. to thrive.

  711. He is

  712. the perfect

  713. forever

  714. priest.

  715. We saw

  716. that in

  717. earlier

  718. chapters.

  719. Unique,

  720. purpose-built

  721. to bring

  722. us close

  723. to God

  724. in relationship.

  725. The one

  726. who prays

  727. for us

  728. constantly

  729. as we

  730. struggle to

  731. serve the

  732. Lord

  733. faithfully

  734. with glad

  735. hearts.

  736. God's

  737. He is

  738. God's

  739. perfect

  740. king

  741. who

  742. rescues

  743. us,

  744. subdues

  745. our unruly

  746. hearts,

  747. and delivers

  748. us into

  749. rest or

  750. perfect

  751. relationship

  752. with God.

  753. The good

  754. life of

  755. restored

  756. relationship,

  757. life of

  758. blessing and

  759. security,

  760. and forever

  761. fellowship

  762. with God.

  763. the

  764. perfection

  765. of Jesus

  766. exposes

  767. the

  768. weakness

  769. of

  770. everything

  771. that went

  772. before Him,

  773. and by

  774. definition,

  775. therefore,

  776. supersedes

  777. it or

  778. renders it

  779. obsolete.

  780. I was

  781. going to

  782. bring in

  783. my

  784. electric

  785. typewriter

  786. this morning

  787. that I

  788. purchased

  789. when I

  790. first

  791. started

  792. work

  793. back in

  794. 1986,

  795. and it

  796. was state

  797. of the

  798. art.

  799. I was

  800. so impressed

  801. with it

  802. because it

  803. could

  804. memorize,

  805. it could

  806. hold in

  807. its memory

  808. 28 letter

  809. characters,

  810. which doesn't

  811. sound much,

  812. but it was

  813. good for me

  814. because my

  815. speed of

  816. typing was

  817. slower than

  818. that.

  819. Now,

  820. that was

  821. state of

  822. the

  823. art.

  824. Last

  825. year,

  826. the end

  827. of last

  828. year,

  829. the church

  830. bought me

  831. a new

  832. laptop.

  833. Now,

  834. they both

  835. do the

  836. same job,

  837. especially,

  838. I mean,

  839. I just

  840. use my

  841. laptop almost

  842. like a glorified

  843. typewriter.

  844. It's word

  845. processing.

  846. So,

  847. I've been

  848. thinking about

  849. just going

  850. back to my

  851. old typewriter.

  852. Both do

  853. words processing.

  854. You type

  855. the same

  856. keyboard.

  857. It's more

  858. like that

  859. for me.

  860. End up

  861. with a

  862. document at

  863. the end.

  864. It's

  865. absurd,

  866. isn't it?

  867. The

  868. modern

  869. laptop in

  870. just a

  871. few,

  872. well,

  873. I don't

  874. know,

  875. probably

  876. years,

  877. I suppose,

  878. the modern

  879. laptop

  880. computer just

  881. made electric

  882. typewriters

  883. obsolete.

  884. You'd be

  885. crazy to go

  886. back to a

  887. typewriter,

  888. wouldn't

  889. you?

  890. By the way,

  891. if anybody

  892. wants to

  893. buy one,

  894. I still

  895. have it in

  896. my room.

  897. I can

  898. negotiate a

  899. really good

  900. price.

  901. It's only

  902. had one

  903. owner.

  904. Very,

  905. very good,

  906. very fast.

  907. Hands down,

  908. it'll beat

  909. your laptop,

  910. so come

  911. and talk

  912. to me

  913. afterwards.

  914. It's

  915. absurd,

  916. isn't

  917. it?

  918. The

  919. perfection

  920. of Jesus

  921. exposes

  922. the weakness

  923. of everything

  924. that comes

  925. before him,

  926. but more

  927. than that,

  928. in chapter

  929. eight,

  930. the son's

  931. perfect work

  932. in an

  933. ongoing

  934. sense,

  935. in heaven,

  936. is everything

  937. needed to

  938. maintain

  939. vibrant

  940. relationship

  941. with God.

  942. See,

  943. all those

  944. former

  945. things,

  946. those

  947. shadowy

  948. things,

  949. really

  950. needed and

  951. demanded the

  952. perfection of

  953. Jesus,

  954. because in

  955. a sense,

  956. they knew

  957. within

  958. themselves

  959. their

  960. imperfection,

  961. their

  962. weakness.

  963. So those

  964. things all

  965. looked forward

  966. to the

  967. perfection

  968. of Jesus.

  969. And in

  970. verse one

  971. of chapter

  972. eight,

  973. we get this

  974. summary statement

  975. which is

  976. summarizing the

  977. argument,

  978. how far back

  979. probably the

  980. whole argument

  981. of Hebrews,

  982. essentially the

  983. writer saying

  984. this,

  985. look,

  986. okay,

  987. all that's

  988. been said

  989. thus far

  990. amounts to

  991. this.

  992. Let me

  993. summarize it

  994. in one

  995. pithy little

  996. statement.

  997. We have

  998. the high

  999. priest,

  1000. we have

  1001. the one

  1002. who has

  1003. created and

  1004. will sustain

  1005. forever

  1006. relationship

  1007. with God,

  1008. unconditional

  1009. loving

  1010. relationship

  1011. with God.

  1012. Jesus is

  1013. everything

  1014. needed

  1015. and Jesus

  1016. does

  1017. everything

  1018. required

  1019. to maintain

  1020. that

  1021. relationship.

  1022. And we're

  1023. introduced to

  1024. him again

  1025. in the

  1026. early

  1027. verses of

  1028. chapter eight

  1029. with another

  1030. extravagant

  1031. description

  1032. of who

  1033. Jesus is.

  1034. And then

  1035. it goes on

  1036. to tell us

  1037. what Jesus

  1038. has done

  1039. and is

  1040. doing.

  1041. Who Jesus

  1042. is as

  1043. God's

  1044. son is

  1045. the

  1046. ultimate,

  1047. unique,

  1048. purpose-built

  1049. prophet,

  1050. priest,

  1051. and king.

  1052. All the

  1053. knowledge of

  1054. God's word,

  1055. all the

  1056. power and

  1057. authority

  1058. needed to

  1059. guarantee

  1060. the delivery

  1061. of God's

  1062. promise or

  1063. covenant.

  1064. to restore

  1065. forever

  1066. fellowship

  1067. with his

  1068. sinful

  1069. people.

  1070. That's his

  1071. qualification.

  1072. That's his

  1073. credential.

  1074. He's now

  1075. in heaven,

  1076. which is

  1077. described here

  1078. as the

  1079. true temple.

  1080. If the

  1081. temple was

  1082. the place

  1083. where you

  1084. meet with

  1085. God or

  1086. where God

  1087. met with

  1088. his people,

  1089. then obviously

  1090. heaven is

  1091. the reality

  1092. of that.

  1093. The

  1094. ultimate

  1095. forever

  1096. sanctification

  1097. sanctuary,

  1098. called here

  1099. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 8:2

  1100. 8 verse 2

  1101. as a

  1102. tent,

  1103. to make

  1104. the connection

  1105. back to

  1106. the Old

  1107. Testament.

  1108. But it's

  1109. got that

  1110. personal touch

  1111. to it,

  1112. hasn't it?

  1113. When you're

  1114. camping with

  1115. somebody and

  1116. you're in a

  1117. two-man

  1118. tent,

  1119. you think,

  1120. I don't know

  1121. what size

  1122. these men

  1123. were that

  1124. this was

  1125. built for,

  1126. but this

  1127. is very

  1128. cozy.

  1129. heaven is

  1130. cozy

  1131. because of

  1132. the

  1133. perfection

  1134. of Jesus.

  1135. Jesus

  1136. is always

  1137. on the

  1138. job,

  1139. thinking now

  1140. what Jesus

  1141. does and

  1142. has done.

  1143. He's always

  1144. on the job

  1145. doing his

  1146. priestly work,

  1147. described here

  1148. in Hebrews

  1149. 8 as

  1150. ministry.

  1151. That is the

  1152. actual activity

  1153. of what a

  1154. priest does.

  1155. He ministers

  1156. to and

  1157. for God's

  1158. needy people.

  1159. We saw that

  1160. in chapter 7

  1161. verse 27.

  1162. He presents

  1163. himself as the

  1164. perfect sacrifice.

  1165. That's what a

  1166. priest did.

  1167. He needed to

  1168. deal with the

  1169. sins of his

  1170. people.

  1171. people.

  1172. Jesus said,

  1173. well, here I

  1174. am.

  1175. I'll deal

  1176. with them in

  1177. my own

  1178. person.

  1179. And in

  1180. doing that,

  1181. he completely

  1182. removed the

  1183. barrier of

  1184. sin, the

  1185. barrier to

  1186. relationship and

  1187. fellowship with

  1188. God, and

  1189. opened up that

  1190. reality of

  1191. forever

  1192. relationship

  1193. with God.

  1194. God

  1195. verse 4

  1196. and 5.

  1197. I pondered a

  1198. lot over what

  1199. these verses

  1200. actually meant,

  1201. but I think it

  1202. goes like this.

  1203. Here on earth,

  1204. Jesus wouldn't

  1205. have been a

  1206. priest.

  1207. I think what

  1208. that means is

  1209. that there's a

  1210. contrast there.

  1211. I think, look,

  1212. while on earth,

  1213. the Jewish

  1214. religious authorities

  1215. wouldn't have

  1216. looked twice at

  1217. Jesus except

  1218. when they wanted

  1219. to kill him.

  1220. They didn't

  1221. value him.

  1222. They couldn't

  1223. see past their

  1224. legalistic thinking

  1225. of, well,

  1226. Jesus couldn't

  1227. be a priest.

  1228. He couldn't

  1229. be a king

  1230. because he

  1231. doesn't fit

  1232. the criteria.

  1233. He doesn't

  1234. fit what we

  1235. expect God

  1236. would do and

  1237. how we expect

  1238. God would

  1239. act.

  1240. So he was

  1241. just sidelined.

  1242. But here,

  1243. the writer's

  1244. saying, Jesus

  1245. is highly

  1246. valued in

  1247. heaven.

  1248. The Father

  1249. sees Jesus

  1250. for all he's

  1251. worth and all

  1252. he's done.

  1253. all he's

  1254. done.

  1255. he's

  1256. honored by

  1257. the Father

  1258. as the

  1259. perfect

  1260. mediator

  1261. or

  1262. guarantor

  1263. of God's

  1264. covenant

  1265. promise

  1266. because he's

  1267. brought the

  1268. two disconnected

  1269. parties together.

  1270. He's brought

  1271. sinful people

  1272. close to

  1273. the holy

  1274. God.

  1275. But he's a

  1276. perfect mediator

  1277. because he's

  1278. been able to

  1279. do that

  1280. while preserving

  1281. the interests

  1282. of both

  1283. parties.

  1284. Jesus was

  1285. totally committed

  1286. to ensuring

  1287. God's holiness

  1288. and justice

  1289. and righteousness

  1290. is not

  1291. tarnished

  1292. or minimized

  1293. in any way.

  1294. That required

  1295. a person

  1296. to die

  1297. for the

  1298. sins

  1299. of people.

  1300. Jesus

  1301. stepped

  1302. into that

  1303. breach.

  1304. God's

  1305. justice

  1306. was

  1307. satisfied

  1308. and the

  1309. door opened

  1310. for God

  1311. to show

  1312. mercy.

  1313. But at

  1314. the same

  1315. time

  1316. he was

  1317. totally

  1318. committed

  1319. to redeeming

  1320. or making

  1321. safe

  1322. his dirty

  1323. people

  1324. and bringing

  1325. them close

  1326. to God

  1327. in perfect

  1328. relationship.

  1329. And that

  1330. meant

  1331. a work

  1332. on their

  1333. behalf.

  1334. The perfect

  1335. mediator.

  1336. In the

  1337. second half

  1338. of chapter

  1339. eight

  1340. the father

  1341. promises

  1342. our

  1343. covenant

  1344. everything

  1345. needed

  1346. for perfect

  1347. forever

  1348. relationship

  1349. with him.

  1350. God's

  1351. God's

  1352. God's

  1353. God's

  1354. words

  1355. spoken

  1356. through

  1357. the prophet

  1358. Jeremiah.

  1359. And he

  1360. uses that

  1361. to prove

  1362. God's

  1363. commitment

  1364. to his

  1365. promise

  1366. to restore

  1367. forever

  1368. relationship

  1369. with his

  1370. sinful

  1371. people

  1372. despite

  1373. their

  1374. ongoing

  1375. sin.

  1376. God's

  1377. word

  1378. and all

  1379. that he

  1380. promises

  1381. here

  1382. would be

  1383. delivered

  1384. again

  1385. through

  1386. Jesus

  1387. the

  1388. perfection

  1389. of

  1390. Jesus.

  1391. But there's

  1392. another thing

  1393. that happens

  1394. here

  1395. through these

  1396. words.

  1397. It's not

  1398. to the

  1399. forefront

  1400. but I'm

  1401. going to

  1402. mention

  1403. anyway

  1404. at least

  1405. I think

  1406. that's

  1407. happening

  1408. here.

  1409. God's

  1410. word

  1411. as he

  1412. quotes

  1413. God's

  1414. word

  1415. through

  1416. the

  1417. prophet

  1418. Isaiah

  1419. God's

  1420. word

  1421. also

  1422. did I

  1423. say

  1424. Isaiah?

  1425. Well that's

  1426. obviously

  1427. wrong

  1428. isn't it?

  1429. Jeremiah

  1430. is the

  1431. one I

  1432. should

  1433. have

  1434. said.

  1435. God's

  1436. word

  1437. also

  1438. exposes

  1439. the

  1440. misguided

  1441. Jewish

  1442. mindset

  1443. held

  1444. with a

  1445. passionate

  1446. emotional

  1447. commitment

  1448. to the

  1449. belief

  1450. that the

  1451. Jews

  1452. could

  1453. secure

  1454. relationship

  1455. and fellowship

  1456. with God

  1457. by going

  1458. through the

  1459. motions

  1460. of religious

  1461. rituals.

  1462. Jeremiah

  1463. and the

  1464. other

  1465. prophets

  1466. are

  1467. scathing.

  1468. You guys

  1469. just every

  1470. day you're

  1471. offering

  1472. sacrifices

  1473. you're

  1474. saying

  1475. your prayers

  1476. and you're

  1477. doing this

  1478. and you're

  1479. doing that

  1480. and it's

  1481. all wasted

  1482. because it's

  1483. just

  1484. transactional.

  1485. You don't

  1486. love the

  1487. Lord.

  1488. God's

  1489. promise

  1490. through

  1491. Jeremiah

  1492. is used

  1493. here as

  1494. proof

  1495. of God's

  1496. commitment

  1497. to dealing

  1498. with the

  1499. problem

  1500. of the

  1501. heart

  1502. which as I

  1503. said earlier

  1504. was the

  1505. heart of

  1506. the

  1507. problem.

  1508. Only

  1509. then

  1510. could

  1511. God

  1512. be their

  1513. God

  1514. and enjoy

  1515. them as

  1516. his people.

  1517. Verse 10

  1518. I'm going to

  1519. run through

  1520. this very

  1521. quickly because

  1522. we'll be

  1523. saying more

  1524. about each

  1525. of these

  1526. things next

  1527. week in

  1528. chapter 9.

  1529. God

  1530. would deliver

  1531. new hearts.

  1532. In other

  1533. words if

  1534. the problem

  1535. was the

  1536. heart God's

  1537. commitment

  1538. to relationship

  1539. said okay

  1540. I will

  1541. reformat

  1542. you from

  1543. the

  1544. inside

  1545. out.

  1546. I'll

  1547. give you

  1548. new

  1549. desires

  1550. new

  1551. thinking

  1552. new

  1553. attitudes

  1554. so you'll

  1555. see me

  1556. for who

  1557. I am

  1558. and love

  1559. me for

  1560. what I

  1561. am

  1562. unconditionally.

  1563. Verse 11

  1564. God

  1565. would

  1566. deliver

  1567. new

  1568. transformational

  1569. understanding

  1570. the

  1571. prophets of

  1572. old

  1573. constantly

  1574. chastised

  1575. God's

  1576. people

  1577. for not

  1578. knowing

  1579. him

  1580. even

  1581. though

  1582. they

  1583. had a

  1584. lifetime

  1585. of

  1586. observing

  1587. his

  1588. character.

  1589. That was

  1590. picked up

  1591. in chapter

  1592. 3 of

  1593. Hebrews.

  1594. 40 years

  1595. in the

  1596. wilderness

  1597. and yet

  1598. you didn't

  1599. even know

  1600. me.

  1601. You'd seen

  1602. all my

  1603. works

  1604. yet you

  1605. didn't

  1606. even know

  1607. me.

  1608. In other

  1609. words

  1610. they knew

  1611. of God

  1612. but it

  1613. wasn't a

  1614. knowledge

  1615. that

  1616. transformed

  1617. them

  1618. and

  1619. transformed

  1620. their

  1621. actions.

  1622. They

  1623. just

  1624. interpreted

  1625. God's

  1626. activity

  1627. to suit

  1628. their own

  1629. convenient

  1630. beliefs.

  1631. And the

  1632. same

  1633. prophets

  1634. pursued

  1635. God's

  1636. people to

  1637. see that

  1638. true

  1639. understanding

  1640. of God

  1641. recognises

  1642. his holiness

  1643. and then

  1644. overflows

  1645. in response

  1646. of obedience

  1647. love and

  1648. delight.

  1649. God says

  1650. I'm going

  1651. to give

  1652. you that

  1653. sort of

  1654. knowledge

  1655. to produce

  1656. that sort

  1657. of response.

  1658. It's the

  1659. only way

  1660. it's going

  1661. to happen.

  1662. So the

  1663. ultimate

  1664. blessing

  1665. built into

  1666. God's

  1667. covenant

  1668. promise

  1669. is that

  1670. God's

  1671. people would

  1672. know and

  1673. love him

  1674. as he

  1675. knows

  1676. and loves

  1677. them.

  1678. third

  1679. verse

  1680. 12

  1681. God

  1682. would

  1683. deliver

  1684. perfection.

  1685. I said

  1686. last week

  1687. that Jesus

  1688. is perfection.

  1689. Well God's

  1690. ultimate

  1691. promise

  1692. is that

  1693. he would

  1694. deliver

  1695. perfection

  1696. because only

  1697. the perfection

  1698. of Jesus

  1699. applied to

  1700. his dirty

  1701. sinful

  1702. people

  1703. would enable

  1704. that fellowship

  1705. for every

  1706. relationship

  1707. to go

  1708. by definition

  1709. forever.

  1710. God's

  1711. promise

  1712. to engage

  1713. with his

  1714. people in

  1715. grace and

  1716. mercy

  1717. acting to

  1718. remove the

  1719. guilt of

  1720. their sin

  1721. and nothing

  1722. shows God's

  1723. heart more

  1724. clearly

  1725. than this

  1726. promise to

  1727. his people.

  1728. It shows

  1729. his desire

  1730. to pardon.

  1731. It shows

  1732. his unwillingness

  1733. to pour out

  1734. his anger.

  1735. It shows

  1736. his delight

  1737. and loving

  1738. kindness.

  1739. And the

  1740. prophets

  1741. Micah and

  1742. the rest

  1743. of them

  1744. they're full

  1745. of that

  1746. sort of

  1747. stuff.

  1748. It's just

  1749. that God's

  1750. people couldn't

  1751. hear it

  1752. or didn't

  1753. want to

  1754. hear it.

  1755. They preferred

  1756. being transactional.

  1757. All of that

  1758. is God's

  1759. commitment to

  1760. freeing his

  1761. people to

  1762. true worship.

  1763. As Jesus

  1764. said

  1765. recorded in

  1766. John's

  1767. gospel

  1768. worship in

  1769. spirit and

  1770. in truth.

  1771. God's

  1772. God's

  1773. covenant

  1774. promise has

  1775. always been

  1776. the same.

  1777. I get a

  1778. little bit

  1779. uncomfortable

  1780. with the

  1781. discontinuity

  1782. between the

  1783. idea of

  1784. old and

  1785. new.

  1786. There is a

  1787. continuity.

  1788. In one sense

  1789. God's covenant

  1790. has always been

  1791. the same.

  1792. But when you

  1793. look at how

  1794. it failed

  1795. because of the

  1796. weakness of the

  1797. human heart

  1798. and how it was

  1799. then achieved

  1800. through the

  1801. perfection of

  1802. Jesus, yeah

  1803. it can

  1804. probably be

  1805. described as

  1806. something brand

  1807. new.

  1808. So what's the

  1809. takeaway from

  1810. all of this?

  1811. Well I want to

  1812. push you in two

  1813. directions.

  1814. Be careful

  1815. not to

  1816. prefer or be

  1817. satisfied with

  1818. a copy, a

  1819. shadow, an

  1820. imitation of

  1821. real relationship

  1822. and blessing

  1823. with God.

  1824. We sort of

  1825. read Hebrews

  1826. and think well

  1827. we would never

  1828. do what those

  1829. Hebrew Christians

  1830. were doing.

  1831. I think I'm

  1832. going back to

  1833. the old way of

  1834. doing things.

  1835. Well you're in a

  1836. dangerous position

  1837. my friend if you

  1838. think you can't

  1839. do that in some

  1840. shape or form.

  1841. could be a

  1842. matter of

  1843. putting your

  1844. confidence for

  1845. acceptance with

  1846. God in

  1847. institutional

  1848. religion if I

  1849. can put it like

  1850. that.

  1851. In other words

  1852. the things that

  1853. go with being

  1854. part of a church

  1855. family like this.

  1856. Rituals.

  1857. In some

  1858. situations it

  1859. could be bells

  1860. and smells.

  1861. Doing religious

  1862. things as though

  1863. somehow or other

  1864. it will make you

  1865. more secure.

  1866. more acceptable

  1867. to God and

  1868. that will

  1869. somehow or

  1870. other please

  1871. God in and

  1872. of itself.

  1873. It could be

  1874. through backing

  1875. your own

  1876. emotional

  1877. commitment to

  1878. the belief

  1879. that well

  1880. I'm a

  1881. basic

  1882. basically I'm

  1883. a good

  1884. person and

  1885. that my

  1886. good intentions

  1887. and good

  1888. living will

  1889. win acceptance

  1890. with God.

  1891. And especially

  1892. when I add

  1893. into that I

  1894. go to church

  1895. and I say

  1896. my prayers

  1897. daily and

  1898. I read my

  1899. Bible and

  1900. do my

  1901. little daily

  1902. devotional

  1903. and we

  1904. start to

  1905. pile up a

  1906. series of

  1907. transactions

  1908. that expect

  1909. God to

  1910. deliver his

  1911. part.

  1912. So common.

  1913. Even as

  1914. Christians

  1915. Tim Keller

  1916. says we can

  1917. slide into

  1918. that and

  1919. slide away

  1920. from the

  1921. gospel.

  1922. don't be

  1923. happily

  1924. transactional

  1925. in your

  1926. relationship

  1927. with God.

  1928. Jesus is

  1929. God's

  1930. perfection.

  1931. perfection is

  1932. everything

  1933. needed,

  1934. is

  1935. established

  1936. and

  1937. maintained

  1938. forever

  1939. relationship

  1940. with God.

  1941. God's

  1942. love.

  1943. And it's

  1944. very logical

  1945. then.

  1946. If he is

  1947. perfection

  1948. then there

  1949. is no

  1950. better place

  1951. to rest

  1952. that is to

  1953. find assurance

  1954. of salvation

  1955. than in

  1956. perfection.

  1957. It doesn't

  1958. need to be

  1959. updated like

  1960. Gareth's

  1961. passport or

  1962. his hairstyle.

  1963. It can't

  1964. be improved.

  1965. You'll never

  1966. get an email

  1967. saying this

  1968. ran out of

  1969. debts two

  1970. years ago and

  1971. you weren't

  1972. even aware of

  1973. it.

  1974. Sorry.

  1975. Passport to

  1976. heaven cancelled.

  1977. Love him.

  1978. Enjoy him.

  1979. Trust him.

  1980. Love him

  1981. unconditionally.

  1982. as he loves

  1983. you unconditionally.

  1984. Then we start

  1985. to show the

  1986. perfection of

  1987. Jesus.

  1988. Thank you for

  1989. listening.
