  1. I'm reading from Hebrews 10, starting at verse 1 through to verse 18.

  2. No longer have any consciousness of sin.

  3. But in these sacrifices, there is a reminder of sin every year, for it is impossible for

  4. the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

  5. Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,

  6. Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me.

  7. In burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

  8. Then I said, Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the

  9. scroll of the book.

  10. When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings

  11. and burnt offerings and sin offerings, these are offered according to the law.

  12. Then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will.

  13. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second.

  14. And by that will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once

  15. for all.

  16. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which

  17. can never take away sins.

  18. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the

  19. right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for

  20. his feet.

  21. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

  22. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us.

  23. For after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares

  24. the Lord, I will put my laws on their heart and write them on their minds.

  25. Then he added, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.

  26. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

  27. Good morning, church.

  28. How are you all doing?

  29. Good.

  30. I'm very delighted and honored to have the opportunity to preach and share God's word today.

  31. Why don't we bow our heads and pray together?

  32. Yeah.

  33. Our heavenly Father, it is your word that created the world and it's by your word and your son

  34. that we are sustained.

  35. We need you, Lord.

  36. So please help us to be excited about your word and above all to be excited about your

  37. son, Jesus.

  38. Help our minds and hearts turn to you and may your word change our lives.

  39. In Jesus' name we pray.

  40. Amen.

  41. Yeah.

  42. Yeah.

  43. So welcome to Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  44. Today is our 10th sermons on the series.

  45. Just wanted to ask, have you ever considered what life would be like if we could travel back

  46. in time to the first century, the time of the Roman Empire, when some of the apostles were

  47. still around, the New Testaments that are now in our hands are still being written and

  48. we were part of the early church.

  49. What would we be struggling with as an early church, as a first century Christian?

  50. History says that, unlike us in 2025, the early church wasn't struggling with gender

  51. issues or US politics.

  52. Or evangelicalism versus Pentecostalism or computer PowerPoint problems.

  53. They were a minority group of people, many of Jewish descent, who upon hearing the good

  54. news of Jesus Christ gave their life to him and gave up their Jewish way of life to follow

  55. Jesus.

  56. Some suffered physical abuse.

  57. Others lost their properties, their jobs, their social status, pretty much everything.

  58. Following Jesus was very, very costly.

  59. And besides social economic changes, becoming Christian also meant forsaking all the daily

  60. seasonal rituals that they grew up with if they were a Jew.

  61. For example, circumcision ceremonies, cleansing rituals, temple sacrifice where their community

  62. is centered and all the feasts and that they celebrated throughout the year, all canceled.

  63. It's like having all our electronic devices taken away, including the old television.

  64. Plus our birthdays, our Christmas, our Easter, which is coming up soon, our Labor Day, and even

  65. that King's birthday, all canceled at the same time.

  66. Pretty devastating, isn't it?

  67. Just imagine that.

  68. In Mark chapter 8, Jesus said,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  69. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, carry the cross, and follow me.

  70. For whoever would save his life would lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake and

  71. the gospels would save it.

  72. Our Savior was not kidding.

  73. He expected his followers to pay a hefty price as a result of following him, and the earthly

  74. church experienced exactly what Jesus said to the full.

  75. To get out of this hardship could be quite simple.

  76. You just go back to the old weight of life.

  77. Stop following Jesus.

  78. Stop being countercultural.

  79. And just be a normal Jew.

  80. Practice what Moses says.

  81. Follow everyone else.

  82. Denounce Jesus.

  83. This is the kind of stuff the early church leaders were up against, and that is why the

  84. Letters to the Hebrews, which was a sermon, was originally written.

  85. The early local church needed a strong reminder that Jesus is better than the angels, bigger

  86. than Moses, far more superior than any priest in any sanctuary and any sacrifices.

  87. So it should not make sense for anyone to give up on Jesus, no matter the cost.

  88. And today, as we look at the first half of chapter 10, we will see the author of Hebrews going

  89. a step further.

  90. This one step further is a huge step further.

  91. Using the Old Testament, he argues that Jesus is better than even the Mosaic covenant, the

  92. law.

  93. And that Jesus had already replaced this law.

  94. To us, it's like, so what?

  95. To the Jews, the law was what gave them their national identities.

  96. These people were originally slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years.

  97. But God rescued them and made a covenant with them and promised to make them his special people.

  98. Here is what the Lord said to Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus chapter 19.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  99. Thus, you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the people of Israel, you yourselves have

  100. seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you to

  101. myself.

  102. Now, therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my

  103. treasured possession among all peoples.

  104. For all the earth is mine and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  105. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.

  106. The law was what gave the Jews their identity according to God.

  107. Now, 20 years ago, Cindy and I had moved to London and we were working there and living

  108. there.

  109. Everyone we met asked where we were from because people just move in and out of London.

  110. Nobody actually stays there, apparently.

  111. Yeah.

  112. And so we told them proudly, we're Australians.

  113. Now, 90% of the Brits would look at us with the weirdest look on their face.

  114. You're, what?

  115. How come you look Chinese?

  116. What's with the accent?

  117. You know, so after a while, we just gave up.

  118. You know, we're just like, okay, forget about this.

  119. We're from Hong Kong.

  120. Much easier that way, right?

  121. To us, giving us our Australian national identity, although we're still patriotic, didn't seem

  122. like a huge deal.

  123. But to the Jews, the Jewish Christians, that is totally something else.

  124. To give up on practicing God's law is to give up God's covenant promise, give up on being

  125. God's kingdom, people, and nation, and give up on their Jewish identity.

  126. Basically, they're self-excommunicated.

  127. The stakes are super high.

  128. Why would anyone do that for anybody?

  129. Today, I'm going to share with you three reasons.

  130. Following the text of Hebrews, chapter 10, verses 1 to 18, it'd be great if you can follow

    Hebrews 10:1–18

  131. along, I will first discuss why it makes perfect sense for the Jewish Christians to give up

  132. on the law, which gave them their identities.

  133. Along the way, I'll try to relate this to us.

  134. And the question I would like us to think about and consider today is, why should we give up

  135. on whatever it is that defines us and follow Jesus instead?

  136. Now, here there are three headings, and they're in your bulletins.

  137. First, the practice that never made perfect.

  138. Second, the propitiation that is perfect.

  139. Third, and last point, the promise of complete transformation.

  140. So, are we ready for this?

  141. No?

  142. Just want to check that you're still here.

  143. All right, let's go.

  144. First, the practice that never made perfect.

  145. Now, practice makes perfect is a widely accepted saying, isn't it?

  146. But if we were to keep practicing something that deviates just slightly from the right way,

  147. whether in sport or music or your studies or your skincare routine, chances are you will

  148. achieve something that is anything but perfect.

  149. Hebrews, chapter 10, verse 1 says,

    Hebrews 10:1

  150. For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come, instead of the true form

  151. of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every

  152. year, make perfect those who draw near.

  153. Every Jewish person in the first century knew that Yahweh, that God, is supremely holy, and

  154. that he is highly sensitive to sin because they grew up memorizing large parts of their Hebrew

  155. scriptures.

  156. Not that God gets sick, but he is a bit like someone with nut allergies.

  157. God's level of tolerance for presence of sin, it's zero.

  158. Zilch.

  159. Now, some schools in Australia have signs saying, we are a nut-free school.

  160. I suppose that helps people enroll and help them with the numbers, right?

  161. Because some kids could get really, really sick from the presence of nuts without even

  162. touching them.

  163. In a similar way, God's temple, which symbolizes his earthly presence, has dozens of signs that

  164. says, I'm a sin-free God.

  165. Not written signs on plastics, but signs that involves real people, real sacrifices like animals

  166. and actions.

  167. Leviticus 16 says that, besides the tent of meeting, which more people can access and touch,

  168. which needed blood atonement, even the holy place, which is further in, and the altar and

  169. areas restricted only to the priest, also needed blood atonement.

  170. All because of the uncleanness and sins of the Israeli people.

  171. So sin is like airborne contamination.

  172. And on top of that, they had all the clothes changing and rituals of washing and everything.

  173. It's quite like us during COVID, isn't it?

  174. We were putting alcohol disinfectants everywhere.

  175. You know, even on grocery shopping bags, we like spraying them, you know, to avoid contagion.

  176. A lot more washing and frequent washing of clothes too during that time for us.

  177. And that is how sensitive God is to sin.

  178. Zero tolerance.

  179. Every Jew knew that because their law said so.

  180. But what they didn't know was that all these animal sacrifices that had been offered yearly

  181. for thousands of years did not actually make perfect the priests or the worshippers they

  182. were representing so that they could all draw near to the real presence of their God who has

  183. zero tolerance for sin.

  184. That is why the Hebrew authors had to break the bad news to them.

  185. What a bummer.

  186. And of course, this wasn't the only bad news.

  187. Earlier in Hebrews chapter 9, the author also said that the earthly tent or tabernacle was

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  188. just a copy of God's presence, not the real deal.

  189. And that the animal blood was only a copy of Christ's blood, which symbolically cleansed

  190. only the outside, but not the inside.

  191. It's like they were living in Legoland.

  192. You know, everything were grand and fascinating, but they were just copies of everything from

  193. Harbour Bridge to Notre Dame with fake people, fake grass, fake animals.

  194. And the harsh reality is hammered home with a logical argument today in Hebrews chapter 10, verse 2.

    Hebrews 10:2

  195. And I paraphrase.

  196. If the practice of offering repeated sacrifices annually cleansed only the worshippers' conscience,

  197. that is, making them perfect or complete in God's eyes, wouldn't they have stopped the practice?

  198. Or to use an analogy, if the bleaching worked and the linen is already white as snow, why would anyone keep washing it?

  199. So, although the Jews have been obediently following God's given law for centuries, it was all futile, useless, wasted.

  200. Yes, the law had given them their identity.

  201. And without the law, there is no order, no holy nation, and no priestly kingdoms.

  202. But what they practiced year after year for almost 1,500 years could not actually qualify the high priest or the people they represented actual access to God.

  203. And instead of a clean conscience, Hebrews chapter 10, verse 3, and if you take a look here,

    Hebrews 10:3

  204. it says all they got from practicing the law was a reminder of sins every single year.

  205. An annual reminder of separation.

  206. It's like those of us who are doing or having tried long-distance relationship.

  207. You were connected via letters in the old days, phone calls that you have to keep paying money if it's really long-distance.

  208. You're sending tapes and things like that.

  209. Some of these younger guys have no idea what I'm talking about.

  210. Now, if you're Gen Z or something, you're dating via texting and IG or Zoom or something like that, aren't you?

  211. You can't hold hands.

  212. You're not watching movies in the cinema together.

  213. You can't even have a meal together.

  214. You are not truly enjoying each other.

  215. Every call is like a reminder of separation.

  216. You're connecting, kind of, but your heart is crying out,

  217. this can't be it forever, right?

  218. That is why the Jewish Christians must give up on practicing their law clean and clear.

  219. It does not make them perfect as access to the real God requires.

  220. Should they choose to remain with the law or the shadow that we heard about during kids' time in verse 1,

  221. they will just be stuck with their consciousness of sin and never arrive at enjoying God's real presence.

  222. A pretty hopeless outcome for this life and also beyond.

  223. So what does this all mean to us who are not born under the law of Moses?

  224. I have a few thoughts that come to mind.

  225. I just want to share this with you.

  226. First, from this passage, we saw that the removal of inward sin

  227. seems to be what the author was preoccupied with.

  228. This can never remove sin.

  229. This can never do away with sin.

  230. Do we share the same preoccupation in our daily lives?

  231. How often do we think about sins that's inside?

  232. If God who gave Israel the law with all the sacrifices and all this requirement of purifications

  233. and he promised to set them apart as a holy nation,

  234. but then that could only get them to draw near to a copy but not actual of his presence,

  235. where do we Gentiles who had none of those things belong?

  236. With respect to God's presence.

  237. Where do we actually belong apart from Jesus?

  238. Third, practicing God's law gave Israel their identity,

  239. but it did not make them perfect or take away sins

  240. because outside-in cleansing never worked.

  241. If that's the case,

  242. what would the little subcultural laws that we follow

  243. achieve with respect to our relationship with God?

  244. Now here's some of the subcultural things that I just picked up in this past year

  245. that since we came back to Australia that you might be familiar with.

  246. For example, and I heard this at a restaurant yesterday,

  247. there's nothing more important than health.

  248. Another one.

  249. Sport obsession equals masculinity.

  250. Another one.

  251. Google says,

  252. so,

  253. it must be true.

  254. Another one is,

  255. you do you.

  256. Don't tell me what to do.

  257. And we have this cancelled culture, don't we?

  258. Like,

  259. let's unfriend this guy.

  260. Another one is,

  261. I have,

  262. there's nothing political here,

  263. I have the right to have a voice.

  264. And another one that's kind of older is,

  265. there's this better home and garden culture that's around.

  266. Everyone's just spending poor fortune in Bunnings, you know.

  267. What recession?

  268. You know,

  269. Bunnings full.

  270. There's all these other ones as well,

  271. and we can all think about it.

  272. These are these mini laws that the world has given us.

  273. That,

  274. you know,

  275. sometimes,

  276. perhaps sometimes we might just indiscriminately follow.

  277. Do they give us true hope

  278. in this life and beyond?

  279. Now,

  280. don't get me wrong here.

  281. Not all cultural laws are inherently bad.

  282. But they all strive to give us some sort of identity,

  283. don't they?

  284. An image to portray.

  285. The question is,

  286. are they really worth practicing

  287. if they fall short of making us perfect?

  288. Or,

  289. are they worth really practicing

  290. if they point us to some hope

  291. that is other than Jesus?

  292. If God's law given to Israel

  293. never made perfect anyone,

  294. then no other law in this world does.

  295. But what God requires,

  296. he provides.

  297. So in the next couple of verses,

  298. we will find that God has provided

  299. the propitiation that is perfect.

  300. That's point two on our bulletins.

  301. First,

  302. what is propitiation?

  303. To propitiate means to offer a sacrifice

  304. that appeases God's righteous wrath

  305. against sin,

  306. which we are full of.

  307. The propitiator, then,

  308. is the one who offers.

  309. And the propitiation is the sacrifice.

  310. If God's wrath is like a fire,

  311. then propitiation is something

  312. or someone that quenches that fire.

  313. So how did God feel

  314. when the Jews following the law

  315. offered up their propitiation?

  316. In Hebrews 10, verse 5,

    Hebrews 10:5

  317. the author,

  318. paraphrasing Psalms 40, verse 6-8,

    Psalms 40:6–8

  319. positions the passage as Christ's own words

  320. and says that it is Jesus' understanding,

  321. not his own,

  322. that God hath taken no pleasure

  323. in any of the offerings.

  324. Ouch!

  325. What a disappointment.

  326. Those offerings cost a fortune, you know.

  327. The propitiation done,

  328. according to the law,

  329. just wasn't the right stuff

  330. that appeased God.

  331. And the reason?

  332. It is in verse 11 here.

  333. Please take a look.

  334. Every priest stands daily at his service,

  335. offering repeatedly the same sacrifices,

  336. which can never take away sin.

  337. Never is a strong word.

  338. Not once,

  339. not for a nanosecond,

  340. did any of the costly offering

  341. actually work.

  342. God has serial tolerance for sin,

  343. and sin is what fuels God's wrath,

  344. even though it grieves him

  345. at the same time.

  346. So until sin is effectively dealt with,

  347. God is not going to be appeased.

  348. In other words,

  349. unless we are sanctified,

  350. God cannot be satisfied.

  351. The perfect propitiation, then,

  352. must be one that sanctifies our sins.

  353. Earlier, in Hebrews 2, 17,

  354. the author already introduced the idea

  355. that Jesus is our propitiator

  356. and also our propitiation.

  357. Jesus is both the offering mediator

  358. and the sacrifice.

  359. He threw himself

  360. into the fire of God's wrath.

  361. Wrath, sorry.

  362. It's American there.

  363. But how does Jesus sanctify us?

  364. Let's hear what Jesus says

  365. in Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  366. First,

  367. let's take a look here in verse 5.

  368. First,

  369. Jesus became fully human

  370. according to God's provision.

  371. Second half of verse 5 says,

  372. a body you, God,

  373. have prepared for me, Jesus.

  374. And then Jesus,

  375. fully human,

  376. following God's word,

  377. carries out God's will

  378. with delightful obedience.

  379. That's how he sanctifies us.

  380. Again,

  381. the author is paraphrasing

  382. Psalms 40.

  383. He in Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10:7

  384. verse 7.

  385. So he's kind of shortened

  386. the original a bit

  387. if you compare the two.

  388. His audience probably knew

  389. Psalm 40 already,

  390. like we know Amazing Grace

  391. because it was a song

  392. written for the temple choir.

  393. And here are the original lyrics

  394. from the Old Testament.

  395. And I'm quoting from Psalm 40 here.

  396. Then I said,

  397. Behold,

  398. I come in the scroll of the book.

  399. It is written of me.

  400. I delight to do your will.

  401. Oh my God,

  402. your law is within my heart.

  403. This is the second step

  404. of how Jesus sanctified us,

  405. delightfully fulfilling

  406. what God says

  407. his will is as a human.

  408. And the third step of sanctification,

  409. Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10:10

  410. verse 10 explains,

  411. it is by this will

  412. that Jesus offered his body

  413. once for all

  414. so that it is through

  415. his sacrifice

  416. that we have been sanctified.

  417. Jesus lived the life

  418. that we ought to have lived

  419. with delightful obedience to God

  420. and died a death

  421. that we ought to have died,

  422. slaughtered like an animal

  423. to sanctify us,

  424. to make us whole

  425. and set us apart

  426. to be in mutually loving relationship,

  427. self-giving relationship

  428. with God

  429. and with one another.

  430. we can have atonement

  431. or atonement with God

  432. not because of our obedience

  433. and sacrifices

  434. but because of his sons.

  435. Jesus went from being

  436. the creator universe,

  437. the lord of hosts

  438. of all the angelic beings,

  439. down to become

  440. like a slaughtered animal

  441. so that we won't be slaughtered

  442. by God's wrath.

  443. God made Jesus,

  444. who knew no sin,

  445. to be seen on our behalf

  446. so that we might become

  447. the righteousness of God

  448. in him.

  449. 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  450. We came down low,

  451. he came down low

  452. and lower than low

  453. so that we may go up high

  454. to where we never deserve to be.

  455. I'm not a professional firefighter

  456. but recently I joined a school

  457. to work there

  458. and so I went through

  459. some mandatory fire training.

  460. Fire fighting training,

  461. not lighting fires.

  462. Did you know that

  463. there are different

  464. fire extinguishers

  465. for different types of fire?

  466. I only just found out.

  467. They have water foam

  468. based extinguishers

  469. that are good for

  470. like wood and paper

  471. and other combustible stuff

  472. and there are other ones

  473. like dry powder

  474. or carbon dioxide extinguishers.

  475. They're all labelled

  476. on the red thing,

  477. the tanks.

  478. They're all good for something

  479. and not good for others.

  480. Now, there's this special

  481. type of fire,

  482. they call it

  483. class D fire.

  484. Class D fire.

  485. It's a metal fire

  486. and it's like

  487. combusting aluminum

  488. and titanium

  489. and magnesium,

  490. all this elementary

  491. table stuff

  492. that I can't pronounce.

  493. Apparently,

  494. it is highly dangerous,

  495. very volatile

  496. fire.

  497. You know,

  498. and what the fire

  499. expert says

  500. in the training

  501. is,

  502. if that happens,

  503. don't try to fight

  504. the fire

  505. and whatever

  506. extinguishers

  507. that you have,

  508. just leave it there,

  509. right?

  510. Shut the place down,

  511. evacuate,

  512. call the professional

  513. firefighters in.

  514. The fire of God's wrath,

  515. it's a bit like

  516. a metal fire.

  517. It is beyond us

  518. to extinguish.

  519. Only Jesus,

  520. with his life

  521. and blood

  522. poured out,

  523. can quench

  524. God's fire.

  525. We also need to

  526. quit trying to

  527. appease our

  528. holy God

  529. because even

  530. Jesus,

  531. our great high priest,

  532. is done with it.

  533. The author says

  534. that in Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:12–13

  535. chapter 10

  536. verses 12 to 13,

  537. Christ has

  538. accomplished

  539. his high priestly

  540. mission for all

  541. time.

  542. Past,

  543. present,

  544. and future sins

  545. are all dealt

  546. with.

  547. He has moved

  548. on from

  549. sacrificing for

  550. sins.

  551. It is now

  552. onto his

  553. ministry of

  554. kingly rule,

  555. the Bible says.

  556. That is why

  557. Jesus has

  558. sat down

  559. at the right

  560. of God,

  561. waiting for

  562. God to

  563. completely

  564. subdue his

  565. enemies and

  566. pile them

  567. under Jesus'

  568. feet like

  569. a footstool.

  570. That's an

  571. allusion from

  572. Psalm 110.

  573. Now,

  574. to sum up

  575. point two,

  576. it is by

  577. Christ's

  578. sacrifice that

  579. we have been

  580. sanctified so

  581. that God

  582. is satisfied.

  583. Hebrews 10

  584. 14 says

  585. Jesus has

  586. perfected for

  587. all time

  588. some people.

  589. Perfected

  590. already?

  591. Who?

  592. He's talking

  593. about us.

  594. We've been

  595. made whole,

  596. complete,

  597. and perfect

  598. in God's

  599. sight,

  600. even though

  601. our daily

  602. experiences

  603. might say

  604. otherwise,

  605. and if you're

  606. married,

  607. your spouse

  608. will remind

  609. you of that

  610. every day.

  611. Apart from

  612. Jesus,

  613. we are supposed

  614. to be the

  615. objects of

  616. God's wrath,

  617. love,

  618. but because

  619. of Jesus,

  620. we are now

  621. the objects

  622. of his

  623. pleasure.

  624. Would our

  625. subcultures

  626. look at us

  627. and say

  628. that we are

  629. perfected for

  630. all time?

  631. Or would

  632. they forever

  633. say that we

  634. need to get

  635. better and

  636. try harder

  637. and keep up

  638. with this

  639. positive thinking

  640. and self-help

  641. or white

  642. lotus trip

  643. or yoga

  644. or mindfulness

  645. app,

  646. listening to

  647. your inner

  648. voice and

  649. do some

  650. trending diet

  651. or whatever

  652. they decide

  653. to put up

  654. on TikTok

  655. tomorrow?

  656. One tries

  657. to enslave

  658. us and

  659. the other

  660. says we

  661. are free

  662. already.

  663. Jesus has

  664. done it.

  665. Which one

  666. would you

  667. choose?

  668. Now,

  669. Jesus is

  670. the propitiation

  671. that is

  672. perfect.

  673. John Stott

  674. in his book

  675. The Cross

  676. of Christ

  677. says this,

  678. the essence

  679. of sin

  680. is man

  681. substituting

  682. himself for

  683. God,

  684. while the

  685. essence of

  686. salvation

  687. is God

  688. substituting

  689. himself for

  690. man.

  691. Because of

  692. Jesus'

  693. substitution,

  694. we are now

  695. set apart

  696. and purified,

  697. no longer

  698. defiling or

  699. defiled and

  700. contagious,

  701. by which we

  702. can confidently

  703. approach God's

  704. throne of

  705. grace,

  706. fully enjoy

  707. him,

  708. rain,

  709. hail,

  710. or shine.

  711. But wait,

  712. that's not all

  713. that Jesus

  714. has achieved.

  715. There is

  716. more.

  717. that brings

  718. us to

  719. point two,

  720. sorry,

  721. point three,

  722. the last

  723. point of

  724. today,

  725. the promise

  726. of complete

  727. transformation.

  728. In

  729. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:9

  730. 10,

  731. verse 9,

  732. we are

  733. told that

  734. when Jesus

  735. completes his

  736. mission of

  737. sanctifying us

  738. through his

  739. self-offering,

  740. he does away

  741. the first

  742. in order

  743. to establish

  744. the second.

  745. First and

  746. second what?

  747. the answer

  748. is covenant

  749. or the

  750. law.

  751. A covenant

  752. is a promise

  753. or positive

  754. commitment

  755. to give

  756. that is

  757. later

  758. fulfilled.

  759. For example,

  760. when God

  761. gave Abraham

  762. a covenant

  763. saying,

  764. I will make

  765. you into a

  766. great nation

  767. or I will

  768. bless those

  769. who bless

  770. you,

  771. he commits

  772. to it

  773. and then

  774. he later

  775. fulfills it,

  776. although it

  777. felt like

  778. taking forever

  779. for Abraham

  780. for a while.

  781. over the

  782. course of

  783. the biblical

  784. narrative,

  785. God has

  786. made a

  787. number of

  788. covenants

  789. with a

  790. good number

  791. of people,

  792. Adam,

  793. Noah,

  794. Abraham,

  795. Moses,

  796. and David.

  797. These are

  798. some of the

  799. key ones

  800. and there

  801. are other

  802. ones too

  803. in the

  804. Bible.

  805. But in

  806. the context

  807. of Hebrews,

  808. the main

  809. covenants

  810. here,

  811. like the

  812. book of

  813. Hebrews

  814. here,

  815. are the

  816. Mosaic

  817. covenants,

  818. also known

  819. as the

  820. old

  821. covenant,

  822. and the

  823. new

  824. covenant

  825. promised

  826. in

  827. Exodus

  828. 24 and

  829. Jeremiah

  830. 31

  831. respectively.

  832. The

  833. old

  834. covenant

  835. was

  836. inaugurated

  837. by

  838. animal

  839. blood,

  840. while the

  841. new

  842. one

  843. by the

  844. blood

  845. of

  846. Jesus.

  847. Both

  848. covenants

  849. are very

  850. purposeful.

  851. The

  852. old

  853. aim

  854. at

  855. partial

  856. and

  857. temporary

  858. atonement

  859. for sin

  860. and

  861. restoration

  862. of

  863. relationship

  864. between

  865. God

  866. and his

  867. chosen

  868. people

  869. to an

  870. extent,

  871. and the

  872. new,

  873. as we've

  874. discussed,

  875. complete

  876. atonement

  877. for sin

  878. and full

  879. renewal

  880. of

  881. relationship

  882. between

  883. God

  884. and those

  885. trusting

  886. in

  887. Jesus

  888. Christ.

  889. Now,

  890. in both

  891. covenants,

  892. God promises

  893. transformation

  894. too.

  895. In the

  896. old,

  897. God

  898. promised

  899. the

  900. people

  901. of

  902. Israel

  903. to

  904. transform

  905. them

  906. from

  907. what?

  908. Slaves

  909. to

  910. God's

  911. holy

  912. nation,

  913. the

  914. kingdom

  915. of

  916. priests.

  917. How

  918. about

  919. the

  920. new

  921. one?

  922. Now,

  923. there are

  924. three that

  925. I would

  926. like to

  927. share.

  928. Three

  929. things about

  930. this

  931. new

  932. covenant

  933. promise

  934. that I

  935. would

  936. like to

  937. share.

  938. First,

  939. the

  940. new

  941. covenant

  942. promises

  943. a

  944. transformation

  945. that is

  946. inside

  947. out.

  948. Transformation

  949. that is

  950. inside

  951. out.

  952. How does

  953. it do

  954. it?

  955. Let's

  956. take a look

  957. at

  958. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:16

  959. chapter 10

  960. verse 16.

  961. This

  962. is the

  963. covenant

  964. that I

  965. will

  966. make

  967. with

  968. them

  969. after

  970. those

  971. days,

  972. declares

  973. the

  974. Lord.

  975. Them

  976. being the

  977. church here,

  978. not just

  979. the house

  980. of Israel.

  981. I

  982. will put

  983. my

  984. laws

  985. on

  986. their

  987. hearts

  988. and

  989. write

  990. them

  991. on

  992. their

  993. minds.

  994. laws

  995. on

  996. hearts

  997. and

  998. minds.

  999. Now,

  1000. what is

  1001. the

  1002. heart

  1003. here?

  1004. The

  1005. heart,

  1006. contrary

  1007. to

  1008. modern

  1009. thinking,

  1010. is not

  1011. only the

  1012. seat of

  1013. our

  1014. feelings.

  1015. In the

  1016. biblical

  1017. sense,

  1018. the

  1019. heart is

  1020. also the

  1021. seat of

  1022. our

  1023. will,

  1024. our

  1025. decision

  1026. making,

  1027. our

  1028. emotions,

  1029. our

  1030. mind,

  1031. our

  1032. desires,

  1033. pretty

  1034. much

  1035. center

  1036. of

  1037. everything.

  1038. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1039. chapter 4

  1040. 23

  1041. says,

  1042. above

  1043. all else,

  1044. guard

  1045. your

  1046. heart.

  1047. For

  1048. what?

  1049. Everything

  1050. you do

  1051. grows

  1052. from it.

  1053. Everything

  1054. you do

  1055. flows

  1056. from

  1057. everything.

  1058. Our

  1059. objects

  1060. are love,

  1061. trust,

  1062. and

  1063. obedience.

  1064. Everything

  1065. that is

  1066. in us,

  1067. that comes

  1068. out of

  1069. us,

  1070. is from

  1071. the

  1072. heart.

  1073. That is

  1074. what the

  1075. new

  1076. covenant

  1077. promises.

  1078. Transformation

  1079. of the

  1080. heart,

  1081. inside

  1082. and out.

  1083. If you

  1084. think about

  1085. it,

  1086. this is

  1087. the exact

  1088. opposite

  1089. of the

  1090. old

  1091. covenant,

  1092. isn't

  1093. it?

  1094. Because

  1095. as we

  1096. discussed

  1097. earlier,

  1098. the

  1099. practices

  1100. of the

  1101. law

  1102. could

  1103. only

  1104. cleanse

  1105. the

  1106. flesh

  1107. symbolically,

  1108. the

  1109. outside,

  1110. but change

  1111. nothing in

  1112. the inside

  1113. as the

  1114. consciousness

  1115. of sin

  1116. or guilt

  1117. and shame

  1118. and everything

  1119. that goes

  1120. with it

  1121. lingers on.

  1122. Now,

  1123. the second

  1124. thing the

  1125. new covenant

  1126. promises is

  1127. a heart that

  1128. is filled

  1129. with ardent,

  1130. centered love,

  1131. a heart that's

  1132. like Jesus.

  1133. Jesus.

  1134. When God

  1135. talks about

  1136. putting his

  1137. law into

  1138. our hearts

  1139. and minds,

  1140. it is

  1141. unlikely that

  1142. he's talking

  1143. about turning

  1144. us into

  1145. Old Testament

  1146. Bible trivia

  1147. kings.

  1148. Can you

  1149. recall when

  1150. Jesus was

  1151. tested by

  1152. a lawyer

  1153. in Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  1154. chapter 22?

  1155. The guy

  1156. asked Jesus,

  1157. which is the

  1158. great commandment

  1159. in the law?

  1160. How did

  1161. Jesus reply?

  1162. Jesus said,

  1163. you shall

  1164. love the

  1165. Lord your

  1166. God with

  1167. all your

  1168. heart and

  1169. all your

  1170. soul and

  1171. all your

  1172. mind.

  1173. This is the

  1174. great and

  1175. first commandment.

  1176. And the

  1177. second is

  1178. like you.

  1179. You shall

  1180. love your

  1181. neighbor as

  1182. yourself also.

  1183. And on

  1184. these two

  1185. commandments

  1186. depend all

  1187. the law

  1188. and prophets.

  1189. To have a

  1190. heart filled

  1191. with God's

  1192. law is to

  1193. have a heart

  1194. filled with

  1195. God's love.

  1196. God's love

  1197. is other

  1198. centered love.

  1199. That is on

  1200. others and

  1201. on God.

  1202. A few

  1203. moments ago,

  1204. we looked at

  1205. Psalms 40

    Psalms 40:8

  1206. verse 8,

  1207. didn't we?

  1208. And I

  1209. quoted,

  1210. I delight

  1211. to do

  1212. your will,

  1213. O my

  1214. God,

  1215. your law

  1216. is within

  1217. my heart.

  1218. These were

  1219. the words

  1220. originally of

  1221. David,

  1222. but even

  1223. more so,

  1224. as Hebrews

  1225. 10, 5

  1226. says,

  1227. it was

  1228. Jesus

  1229. speaking.

  1230. Having God's

  1231. law in the

  1232. heart then

  1233. is not like

  1234. someone who

  1235. knows a lot

  1236. of Bible,

  1237. but having

  1238. a heart

  1239. like Jesus.

  1240. And it is

  1241. because of

  1242. this heart

  1243. that he went

  1244. on the cross

  1245. and gave

  1246. his life

  1247. to us,

  1248. for us.

  1249. A perfect

  1250. and complete

  1251. heart in the

  1252. sight of God.

  1253. And of course,

  1254. our hearts

  1255. are still a

  1256. work in

  1257. progress.

  1258. While only

  1259. glimpses of

  1260. our transformation

  1261. may emerge

  1262. in this life,

  1263. its entirety

  1264. will be

  1265. surely

  1266. unveiled

  1267. in the

  1268. other side

  1269. of eternity.

  1270. Third and

  1271. lastly,

  1272. the new

  1273. covenant

  1274. promises a

  1275. transformation

  1276. that is

  1277. fueled,

  1278. not by

  1279. ourselves,

  1280. but by

  1281. God's

  1282. mercy.

  1283. 10,

  1284. verses 17

  1285. to 18

  1286. says here,

  1287. if you can

  1288. follow with

  1289. me,

  1290. I will

  1291. remember

  1292. their sins

  1293. and their

  1294. lawless

  1295. deeds

  1296. no more.

  1297. That's

  1298. God's

  1299. new

  1300. covenant.

  1301. Again,

  1302. he's

  1303. paraphrasing

  1304. Jeremiah 31

  1305. here.

  1306. Then the

  1307. author

  1308. explains,

  1309. where there

  1310. is forgiveness

  1311. of this,

  1312. there is

  1313. no longer

  1314. any offering

  1315. for sin.

  1316. This,

  1317. again,

  1318. is the

  1319. exact opposite

  1320. of the

  1321. old

  1322. covenant.

  1323. With the

  1324. old,

  1325. it's about

  1326. an annual

  1327. reminder of

  1328. sin.

  1329. But with

  1330. the new,

  1331. God chooses

  1332. to forgive

  1333. and literally

  1334. forget,

  1335. not literally

  1336. forget,

  1337. but counts

  1338. as forget,

  1339. which means

  1340. he's not

  1341. holding our

  1342. sins against

  1343. us anymore.

  1344. And we

  1345. all know

  1346. why,

  1347. don't we?

  1348. It is

  1349. because if

  1350. the accuser

  1351. goes to

  1352. God and

  1353. says,

  1354. look at

  1355. Calvin,

  1356. he's

  1357. stuffed up

  1358. again,

  1359. Jesus,

  1360. he says,

  1361. look at

  1362. my hands

  1363. and my

  1364. feet.

  1365. His blood

  1366. is covering

  1367. us once

  1368. and for

  1369. all.

  1370. So here

  1371. we have

  1372. it,

  1373. the new

  1374. covenant.

  1375. It promises

  1376. a transformation

  1377. that is

  1378. inside out,

  1379. a heart

  1380. like Jesus,

  1381. fueled by

  1382. God's

  1383. mercy,

  1384. a perfect

  1385. and complete

  1386. transformation.

  1387. What a

  1388. promise.

  1389. or to

  1390. put it

  1391. another

  1392. way,

  1393. the new

  1394. covenant

  1395. promises us

  1396. transformation

  1397. that isn't

  1398. about adopting

  1399. a new set

  1400. of rules.

  1401. It is

  1402. about hearts

  1403. that is

  1404. transformed

  1405. by the

  1406. gospel.

  1407. Finally,

  1408. back to our

  1409. original question,

  1410. why should we

  1411. give up on

  1412. whatever it

  1413. is that

  1414. defines us

  1415. and follow

  1416. Jesus

  1417. instead?

  1418. it is

  1419. because the

  1420. gospel of

  1421. Jesus is

  1422. infinitely

  1423. greater than

  1424. everything in

  1425. the world.

  1426. Our

  1427. heavenly

  1428. father,

  1429. our hearts

  1430. are so

  1431. small and

  1432. so broken,

  1433. we fail to

  1434. see how

  1435. holy you

  1436. are,

  1437. how great

  1438. you are,

  1439. and how

  1440. wonderful

  1441. your son

  1442. and everything

  1443. that he has

  1444. done for

  1445. us is.

  1446. Help us

  1447. see your

  1448. beauty,

  1449. and feel

  1450. the reality

  1451. of the

  1452. gospel

  1453. every day

  1454. in our

  1455. lives,

  1456. so that

  1457. we can be

  1458. transformed

  1459. by you

  1460. and to

  1461. reflect your

  1462. glory in

  1463. this one,

  1464. in this

  1465. broken,

  1466. very broken

  1467. world.

  1468. In Jesus'

  1469. name we

  1470. pray,

  1471. amen.

  1472. what do you
