  1. Hebrews chapter 10, reading from verse 32 through to 39, which is the end of the chapter.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2. But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.

  3. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.

  4. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

  5. For you have a need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what is promised.

  6. For yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay.

  7. But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.

  8. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

  9. Thanks, Alex.

  10. Let's pray.

  11. Lord, as we consider this passage in Hebrews, help us to hear what you want to say to us through your word.

  12. Help us to see more of Christ, more of your faithfulness, and help us to respond in faith.

  13. Amen.

  14. Well, in the 1930s, the Golden Gate Bridge was one of the most ambitious construction projects that the world had ever seen.

  15. The idea of building a massive steel bridge across the deep waters of the San Francisco Bay seemed almost impossible.

  16. And it was dangerous.

  17. The winds howled, the scaffolding would sway high above the freezing waters.

  18. Because many men were terrified.

  19. Before that time, it was just accepted that for every $1 million spent on a bridge construction, one life would be lost.

  20. Death was part of the job.

  21. But the chief engineer, Joseph Strauss, he cared deeply for the men that were risking their lives to build the bridge.

  22. And he insisted on a new idea that no one had ever used before on that scale.

  23. And that was a giant safety net.

  24. Stretching underneath the entire span of the bridge as it was being built.

  25. It cost a mozza as well.

  26. It was about $130,000.

  27. An enormous amount during the Great Depression.

  28. But Strauss made it clear if there was no net, there'd be no bridge.

  29. At first, the workers were sceptical.

  30. Some joked about the net.

  31. Some said it wouldn't matter.

  32. Some were still frozen in fear as they climbed the beams and the cables hundreds of feet above the water.

  33. And some did slip.

  34. And the net caught them.

  35. And they survived.

  36. But one thing was true.

  37. The men no longer based their confidence on how strong they felt on any given day.

  38. They didn't base their confidence on how well rested they were or how many Weet-Bix they had for breakfast.

  39. Or how steady their hands were.

  40. Their confidence rested on something beneath them.

  41. Something that was strong enough to hold them if they fell.

  42. And this is the kind of confidence that our passage today is calling us to.

  43. Hebrews 10, 32-39.

  44. It's not a call to be brave by sheer willpower.

  45. It's not a pep talk about toughening up.

  46. It's a call to remember and respond.

  47. Remember, God has proven his faithfulness in the person and work of Christ.

  48. Remember how God has helped you endure struggles, suffering, loss.

  49. And you can have confidence.

  50. Not in how unshakable you are.

  51. But confidence in the finished work of Christ.

  52. The solid, unbreakable foundation beneath us.

  53. Some call Hebrews chapter 10 the great pivot point in the book of Hebrews.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  54. Where it moves from explanation to application.

  55. And the author's gone to great detail to explain the superiority of the person and work of Christ.

  56. And he goes on to describe that because of who Christ is and what he did for us on the cross.

  57. We can now have full confidence in our divine and permanent access to God through Christ.

  58. Not only this, but we can also have full confidence in Jesus, our advocate.

  59. There's no longer a need for a high priest to offer sacrifices on our behalf for sin.

  60. As we saw in the Old Testament.

  61. Christ became the ultimate sacrifice.

  62. Once and for all, through his death on the cross.

  63. And Jesus continues to be our advocate.

  64. And he prays to God on our behalf.

  65. Two weeks ago, Martin encouraged us from Hebrews 10, 19 to 31.

  66. Which says that because of our full access to God through Christ our advocate.

  67. We should draw near, hold fast and look outwards as we consider how we spur each other on.

  68. And then the writer gives us one of the most sobering warnings found in all of scripture.

  69. About the folly of rejecting the sacrifice of Christ.

  70. Through unrepentant and deliberate ongoing sin.

  71. And he concludes in verse 31 with,

  72. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  73. And parents and children among us may be familiar with what comes next.

  74. After you've sat your child down.

  75. And delivered some much needed words of discipline.

  76. Next comes a hug.

  77. It's the reassurance that you love them.

  78. Two weeks ago, Martin gave us the words of discipline.

  79. And now through a fortunate coincidence, I get to give us the hug that comes next.

  80. But we're going to see that both warning and hug are necessary.

  81. And that brings us to today's passage.

  82. So the writer begins to apply what access and advocacy means for a small church.

  83. That's face to face with the great threat of being tossed around by the storms of the world.

  84. In chapter 10, verses 32 to 39.

  85. We're going to be encouraged to remember the past.

  86. Respond in the present.

  87. Remember the past.

  88. Respond in the present.

  89. Let's jump in.

  90. Have a look at verse 32.

  91. Recall the former days when after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.

  92. We don't know exactly what events the writer was referring to here.

  93. Although some say it was referring to converted Jewish Christians being banished from the synagogue

  94. and abused and publicly humiliated by the Jewish establishment in AD 49 at the instruction of the Roman Emperor Claudius.

  95. But whatever they'd been through, it's clear that it involved intense persecution,

  96. which was likened to being squeezed and pressured for their faith in Christ.

  97. Last week, Dave told us about a Dutch Christian watchmaker, Corrie ten Boom.

  98. Just a quick refresher if you weren't here for the Easter service.

  99. After being set free because of a clerical error from a World War II Nazi concentration camp,

  100. just days before all the women her age were executed,

  101. Dave told us how Corrie was eventually able to meet and forgive one of the guards

  102. who had tormented her and her sister Betsy.

  103. Corrie and her sister were exposed to freezing cold conditions, starvation,

  104. lice-infested bedding, constant cruelty from the prison guards.

  105. But Corrie knew that she had been freely forgiven.

  106. She knew how much she'd been freely forgiven in Christ.

  107. And she had the same compassion that Christ showed her,

  108. which overflowed into compassion for the guard.

  109. She was able to forgive one of the very people who had caused her and her sister

  110. such immense suffering.

  111. While they were prisoners, Corrie managed to smuggle a Bible into the camp

  112. and they would hold secret worship services where they would read scripture

  113. and sing hymns under their breath.

  114. And Corrie's sister Betsy ended up dying in the camp before Corrie was released.

  115. As she grew weaker and before she was passing away,

  116. Betsy would whisper,

  117. there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still.

  118. Even through some of our deepest sufferings,

  119. Christ proved himself faithful.

  120. Even through some of their deepest sufferings,

  121. Christ proved himself faithful to sustain them and give them joy in Christ.

  122. Corrie reflected on her time in the concentration camp with the words,

  123. when Jesus is all you have, you realise he's all you need.

  124. The kind of suffering that Corrie ten Boom and her sister experienced

  125. can feel pretty distant from us in 2025.

  126. But it may not have felt so distant from the reality

  127. of what these first century Christians endured.

  128. Look at verse 33.

  129. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution.

  130. I won't pretend to know Greek,

  131. but I'm told that the Greek word for publicly exposed

  132. comes from the word theatron or theatre.

  133. They were taunted and ridiculed.

  134. They were forced to face the humiliation of being put on display

  135. like they were public theatre.

  136. Not only did they endure,

  137. but the verse 34 says,

  138. they joyfully accepted the plundering of their property

  139. since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession,

  140. an abiding one.

  141. I was recently surprised by a statistic

  142. by the State Emergency Service

  143. that only 36% of Lismore residents surveyed

  144. would be likely to evacuate their home in a flood,

  145. during a flood,

  146. if asked directly to do so by authorities.

  147. Only 36% would evacuate during a flood.

  148. Why is that?

  149. I think this speaks of our strong human tendency

  150. to hold on as hard as we can

  151. to what we have,

  152. especially in tough times.

  153. And can you imagine watching on with joy

  154. while your house was being robbed?

  155. Why would anyone do that?

  156. How could anyone be joyful in these circumstances?

  157. Because Christ was at work in them.

  158. And because of this,

  159. they knew they had a better possession,

  160. an abiding possession.

  161. They believed and they trusted in the words of Jesus

  162. from Matthew 6, 19 that says,

  163. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth

  164. where moth and rust destroy

  165. and where thieves break in and steal,

  166. but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.

  167. The gospel had flipped their priorities

  168. for what is important upside down.

  169. They were seeking not the temporary,

  170. but the city that is to come,

  171. the heavenly Jerusalem.

  172. So why would the author be calling on them

  173. to remember these times?

  174. Because these times were evidence

  175. of the work that God had already done in them.

  176. And God hadn't changed.

  177. He was going to continue to sustain

  178. and anchor them through suffering

  179. and through the struggle that was to come.

  180. By looking back,

  181. they're encouraged that even

  182. if they lose earthly possessions again,

  183. even if they're exposed to insult

  184. and persecution

  185. and made to be humiliating public theatre,

  186. they have something that's so much better,

  187. something that can never be taken away.

  188. They have an abiding possession,

  189. the finished work of Christ

  190. giving us salvation,

  191. full access to God,

  192. full advocacy in Christ.

  193. Have a look at verse 33,

  194. the second half.

  195. Sometimes you were partners

  196. with those so treated.

  197. You had compassion on those in prison.

  198. One of the ways that God helped his people

  199. to endure the storm

  200. was through other believers.

  201. They were active in each other's suffering.

  202. Side by side,

  203. arms locked,

  204. they faced persecution together.

  205. If you insult him,

  206. you insult me.

  207. The gospel not only restores

  208. our vertical relationship with God,

  209. but it changes our horizontal relationships

  210. with each other.

  211. The gospel lifts our gaze

  212. upwards to Christ

  213. and his finished work

  214. and then outwards

  215. to have compassion for each other.

  216. We're saved into a people,

  217. into a church,

  218. the body of Christ.

  219. And if there's one guarantee

  220. in this life,

  221. it's that at some point

  222. we all suffer.

  223. We all experience suffering.

  224. And I have no doubt

  225. that there's people

  226. in our congregation

  227. who have walked through

  228. some times

  229. of deep sorrow,

  230. deep suffering

  231. that I couldn't begin to fathom.

  232. And it's interesting

  233. that the same word

  234. for compassion

  235. that the believers in Hebrews

  236. had for each other's suffering

  237. in verse 34

  238. is used earlier

  239. in chapter 4

  240. to describe Christ's

  241. sympathy for us

  242. as our high priest.

  243. It's Christ's compassion

  244. and sympathy for us

  245. that model and motivate

  246. our compassion

  247. and sympathy for each other.

  248. What a beautiful thing

  249. it is to be saved

  250. into the body of Christ

  251. that has the same compassion

  252. and sympathy for each other

  253. that Christ has for us.

  254. And we were reminded

  255. in Dave's talk

  256. on Hebrews 6

    Hebrews 6:10

  257. verse 10

  258. that God loves it

  259. when we show compassion

  260. to each other.

  261. For God is not unjust

  262. so as to overlook

  263. your work

  264. and the love

  265. that you've shown

  266. for his name

  267. in serving the saints

  268. as you still do.

  269. And Martin encouraged us

  270. in his sermon

  271. on Hebrews 10

  272. just before Easter

  273. not to give up

  274. meeting together.

  275. We're not meant

  276. to walk alone

  277. as Christians.

  278. A pastor

  279. in response

  280. to the question

  281. can you still be a Christian

  282. and not go to church

  283. once said

  284. of course

  285. in the same way

  286. that you can still be married

  287. and never come home.

  288. You might still be married

  289. but you're missing

  290. a whole lot

  291. and it's not the way

  292. that it's created to be.

  293. It's incredibly hard

  294. to endure suffering

  295. without the support

  296. of other Christians.

  297. We need each other.

  298. And so the writer

  299. of Hebrews

  300. is urging them

  301. remember

  302. here is the evidence

  303. of what God

  304. has already done

  305. in you.

  306. Remember that God

  307. was at work in you

  308. through suffering

  309. bringing endurance

  310. joy

  311. deep compassion

  312. for each other.

  313. And then we come

  314. to the big

  315. therefore

  316. of verse 35.

  317. After remembering

  318. the past

  319. what are we to do next?

  320. Verse 35 to 39

  321. the author gives us

  322. a couple of ways

  323. that we can respond

  324. in the present.

  325. Number one

  326. in perseverance

  327. and number two

  328. in confidence

  329. through faith

  330. in the finished work

  331. of Christ.

  332. Verse 36

  333. For you have need

  334. of endurance

  335. so that when you've

  336. done the will of God

  337. you may receive

  338. what is promised.

  339. If you ever watched

  340. a long distance

  341. running race

  342. or a park run

  343. or maybe a school

  344. cross country

  345. there's a few

  346. people that

  347. at the start

  348. of the race

  349. it looks like

  350. they've got jet packs

  351. on their sneakers

  352. and they'll just

  353. take off.

  354. But then you watch

  355. them and about

  356. halfway into the race

  357. or maybe a couple

  358. of kilometres

  359. depending on the race

  360. they run out of steam.

  361. They tank out.

  362. And then you watch

  363. the more sustainably

  364. paced plotters

  365. overtake them.

  366. Perseverance is key.

  367. And our text

  368. recommends a perseverance

  369. that keeps going

  370. to the end.

  371. A call to not give up

  372. our confidence

  373. in Christ.

  374. And this perseverance

  375. assures us

  376. of what is promised

  377. being full salvation

  378. in Christ.

  379. Perseverance doesn't

  380. earn our salvation

  381. but it's primary

  382. evidence of salvation.

  383. Perseverance doesn't

  384. earn our salvation

  385. it is primary

  386. evidence

  387. of our salvation.

  388. Verse 35

  389. Do not throw away

  390. your confidence

  391. which has great reward.

  392. I think arrogance

  393. and pride

  394. are sometimes

  395. words that

  396. can be associated

  397. with confidence

  398. but these

  399. are so far

  400. from what the writer

  401. is describing

  402. in verse 35

  403. because our confidence

  404. as Christians

  405. doesn't rest on

  406. our own abilities

  407. or our capacity.

  408. It doesn't rest

  409. on how loud

  410. or how well we sing.

  411. It doesn't rest

  412. on how well we play

  413. an instrument

  414. on the music team.

  415. It doesn't rest

  416. on how many

  417. rosters we're on

  418. or how many sermons

  419. we can preach

  420. or how many services

  421. we lead

  422. or how busy we are

  423. or how busy we look

  424. or how we feel

  425. compared to other Christians.

  426. Our confidence

  427. as Christians

  428. rests wholly

  429. and solely

  430. on the person

  431. and the work

  432. of Christ.

  433. Verse 37

  434. to 39

  435. for yet a little

  436. while

  437. and the coming

  438. one

  439. will come

  440. and will not

  441. delay

  442. but my righteous

  443. one shall live

  444. by faith

  445. and if he shrinks

  446. back

  447. my soul

  448. has no pleasure

  449. in him

  450. but we are not

  451. of those

  452. who shrink back

  453. and are destroyed

  454. but are of those

  455. who have faith

  456. and preserve

  457. their souls.

  458. The author's

  459. quoting from Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 2:3–4

  460. chapter 2

  461. verses 3 to 4

  462. and it's worth

  463. reading at least

  464. the first 4 or 5

  465. chapters of Habakkuk

  466. to get a full context

  467. for these verses

  468. but in summary

  469. the prophet Habakkuk

  470. repeatedly

  471. cried out to God

  472. complaining about

  473. the injustice

  474. and the suffering

  475. of the righteous

  476. and have a look

  477. at God's response

  478. to Habakkuk.

  479. The righteous

  480. shall live

  481. by faith.

  482. Live by faith

  483. Habakkuk.

  484. The key to perseverance

  485. for Habakkuk

  486. was faith

  487. but what is God

  488. telling Habakkuk

  489. to have faith in?

  490. He's telling him

  491. to have faith

  492. in who God is

  493. who he has proven

  494. himself to be

  495. and the writer

  496. of Hebrews

  497. is encouraging

  498. the reader

  499. to do the same

  500. as Habakkuk.

  501. Later on

  502. in Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  503. chapter 3

  504. after God's words

  505. to him

  506. have sunk in

  507. he sings a beautiful

  508. and well-known song

  509. of faith to God.

  510. Though the fig tree

  511. should not blossom

  512. nor fruit

  513. be on the vines

  514. the produce

  515. of the olive

  516. fail

  517. and the fields

  518. yield no food

  519. the flock

  520. be cut off

  521. from the fold

  522. and there be

  523. no herd

  524. in the stalls

  525. yet I will

  526. rejoice in the Lord

  527. I will take joy

  528. in the God

  529. of my salvation

  530. God the Lord

  531. is my strength

  532. he makes my feet

  533. like the deers

  534. he makes me tread

  535. on high places.

  536. The key to perseverance

  537. for Habakkuk

  538. and the key to perseverance

  539. for the Hebrews

  540. and the key to perseverance

  541. for us

  542. is faith.

  543. It's not faith

  544. in how strong

  545. or brave

  546. we feel

  547. on any given day

  548. or faith

  549. in our inability

  550. it's faith

  551. in the net

  552. underneath us

  553. it's certainty

  554. that the net

  555. will save us

  556. from an otherwise

  557. certain death

  558. in the event

  559. of a strong

  560. gust of wind

  561. or a misplaced step.

  562. Faith

  563. in the net

  564. gives us

  565. confidence

  566. to carry on.

  567. The finished work

  568. of Christ

  569. is our confidence.

  570. So to summarise

  571. verses 37 to 39

  572. Jesus is coming soon.

  573. A reminder

  574. that our current

  575. struggle

  576. and suffering

  577. is temporary

  578. compared to

  579. an eternity

  580. with Christ.

  581. the saved

  582. will persevere

  583. by faith

  584. and the lost

  585. will shrink

  586. back.

  587. So have

  588. confidence

  589. in Christ

  590. through faith

  591. to persevere.

  592. Saint

  593. Chrysostom

  594. showed an

  595. incredible display

  596. of faith

  597. and confidence

  598. in Christ

  599. when he was

  600. brought before

  601. the Roman

  602. Emperor

  603. and the Emperor

  604. threatened him

  605. with banishment

  606. if he remained

  607. a Christian

  608. and Chrysostom

  609. replied

  610. you cannot

  611. banish me

  612. for this world

  613. is my father's

  614. house

  615. but I will

  616. slay you

  617. said the Emperor

  618. no you cannot

  619. said the noble

  620. champion

  621. of the faith

  622. for my life

  623. is hid

  624. with Christ

  625. in God

  626. I'll take away

  627. your treasures

  628. no

  629. you cannot

  630. for my treasure

  631. is in heaven

  632. and my heart

  633. is there

  634. but I will

  635. drive you

  636. away from man

  637. and you

  638. shall have

  639. no friend

  640. left

  641. no

  642. you cannot

  643. for I

  644. have a friend

  645. in heaven

  646. from who

  647. you cannot

  648. separate me

  649. I defy

  650. you

  651. for there

  652. is nothing

  653. you can

  654. do to

  655. hurt me

  656. think back

  657. to the young

  658. and the small

  659. storm-toss

  660. church

  661. that's just

  662. come out

  663. of an

  664. intense

  665. period of

  666. persecution

  667. knowing that

  668. more persecution

  669. was coming

  670. more persecution

  671. was on the

  672. horizon

  673. there was a

  674. reason why

  675. God told the

  676. Israelites to

  677. gather the

  678. stones of

  679. remembrance at

  680. Gilgal

  681. after God

  682. had helped

  683. them cross

  684. the Jordan

  685. into the

  686. promised land

  687. and although

  688. the stones

  689. were much

  690. less impressive

  691. than the

  692. miraculous display

  693. that God

  694. showed them

  695. of his

  696. power

  697. it was a

  698. symbol of

  699. God's

  700. faithfulness

  701. that he

  702. will preserve

  703. and carry

  704. his people

  705. tough times

  706. are still

  707. ahead

  708. look at

  709. these

  710. stones

  711. remember

  712. how I

  713. helped

  714. you

  715. and

  716. respond

  717. in

  718. faith

  719. the

  720. author

  721. of

  722. Hebrews

  723. encourages

  724. us

  725. with

  726. two

  727. things

  728. remember

  729. how

  730. God

  731. has

  732. shown

  733. his

  734. faithfulness

  735. and

  736. helped

  737. you

  738. in the

  739. past

  740. and

  741. respond

  742. in the

  743. present

  744. be

  745. confident

  746. in

  747. Christ's

  748. finished

  749. work

  750. be

  751. confident

  752. that

  753. Christ

  754. is at

  755. work

  756. in

  757. you

  758. look

  759. back

  760. in

  761. faith

  762. look

  763. ahead

  764. but

  765. keep

  766. going

  767. persevere

  768. in

  769. faith

  770. the

  771. fickle

  772. and the

  773. fleeting

  774. are not

  775. worth

  776. your worry

  777. and attention

  778. God

  779. says

  780. my

  781. righteous

  782. one

  783. shall

  784. live

  785. by

  786. faith

  787. George

  788. Matheson

  789. wrote

  790. the hymn

  791. oh love

  792. that will

  793. not let

  794. me

  795. go

  796. in the

  797. midst

  798. of

  799. his

  800. own

  801. suffering

  802. that was

  803. a result

  804. of

  805. him

  806. losing

  807. his

  808. sight

  809. to

  810. a

  811. degenerative

  812. eye

  813. condition

  814. and

  815. there's

  816. much

  817. more

  818. to

  819. the

  820. story

  821. and

  822. it's

  823. worth

  824. looking

  825. up

  826. but

  827. here

  828. are

  829. some

  830. verses

  831. from

  832. his

  833. famous

  834. hymn

  835. to

  836. encourage

  837. us

  838. oh joy

  839. that

  840. seekest

  841. me

  842. through

  843. pain

  844. I

  845. cannot

  846. close

  847. my

  848. heart

  849. to

  850. thee

  851. I

  852. trace

  853. the

  854. rainbow

  855. through

  856. the

  857. rain

  858. and

  859. feel

  860. the

  861. promises

  862. not

  863. in

  864. vain

  865. that

  866. mourn

  867. shall

  868. tearless

  869. be

  870. oh

  871. cross

  872. that

  873. liftest

  874. up

  875. my

  876. head

  877. I

  878. dare

  879. not

  880. ask

  881. to

  882. fly

  883. from

  884. thee

  885. I

  886. lay

  887. in

  888. dust

  889. life's

  890. glory

  891. dead

  892. and

  893. from

  894. the

  895. ground

  896. their

  897. blossoms

  898. red

  899. life

  900. that

  901. shall

  902. endless

  903. be

  904. oh

  905. love

  906. that

  907. will

  908. not

  909. let

  910. me

  911. go

  912. I

  913. rest

  914. my

  915. weary

  916. soul

  917. in

  918. thee

  919. I

  920. give

  921. thee

  922. back

  923. the

  924. life

  925. I

  926. owe

  927. that

  928. in

  929. thine

  930. ocean

  931. depths

  932. its

  933. flow

  934. may

  935. richer

  936. fuller

  937. be

  938. Lord

  939. help

  940. us

  941. be

  942. assured

  943. by

  944. and

  945. rest

  946. in

  947. the

  948. finished

  949. work

  950. of

  951. Christ

  952. help

  953. us

  954. remember

  955. your

  956. faithfulness

  957. to

  958. work

  959. in

  960. us

  961. and

  962. help

  963. us

  964. endure

  965. through

  966. suffering

  967. and

  968. loss

  969. give

  970. us

  971. confidence

  972. in

  973. Christ

  974. faith

  975. to

  976. persevere

  977. and

  978. compassion

  979. for

  980. each

  981. other

  982. Amen
