  1. Alright, so our reading today is from Matthew 18, starting at verse 15 and finishing at 35.

  2. If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.

  3. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

  4. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you,

  5. that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  6. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.

  7. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

  8. Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,

  9. and whatever you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  10. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask,

  11. it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

  12. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.

  13. Then Peter came up and said to him,

  14. Lord, how often will my brother sin against me and I forgive him?

  15. As many as seven times, Jesus said to him.

  16. I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

  17. Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

  18. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

  19. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold with his wife and children and all that he had,

  20. and payment to be made.

  21. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him,

  22. Have patience with me and I will pay you everything.

  23. And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

  24. But when the same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii and seized him.

  25. He began to choke him, saying,

  26. Pay what you owe.

  27. So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him,

  28. Have patience with me and I will pay you.

  29. He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.

  30. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed,

  31. and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.

  32. Then his master summoned him and said to him,

  33. You wicked servant, I forgave you all that your debt because you pleaded with me.

  34. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant as I had mercy on you?

  35. And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers until he should pay all his debt.

  36. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.

  37. Good morning.

  38. Good to see everyone again this week.

  39. Also welcome to those who are online as well.

  40. As Sam has said, we are doing, or we are reading,

  41. and considering the book of Matthew, chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  42. And today we are in the second part of it.

  43. So last week we talked about

  44. how in the church,

  45. or in the group of people,

  46. we seek to be important,

  47. to be somebody.

  48. And this week we are coming to the part

  49. where we seek to protect our rights.

  50. So,

  51. we will, yeah,

  52. consider that.

  53. Let's pray first before we stop.

  54. Father God,

  55. we are so thankful that we can

  56. come together to worship you

  57. as we sing songs,

  58. as we listen to your word.

  59. How does,

  60. Father,

  61. not to

  62. concentrate on ourselves,

  63. to consider how good we are,

  64. or how bad we are.

  65. help us to

  66. be able to see the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  67. the founder and the perfecter of our faith.

  68. For we pray in Jesus' name.

  69. Amen.

  70. For those of us who have

  71. watched many movies,

  72. you might notice that

  73. a lot of movies are about vengeance.

  74. The story will start with

  75. somebody,

  76. or the main actor,

  77. or actress,

  78. was

  79. bullied by

  80. someone,

  81. I mean,

  82. the bad guys,

  83. or persecuted by the bad guys,

  84. and then

  85. we will,

  86. as we,

  87. we will wait for the

  88. development of the story,

  89. and we will predict that

  90. at the end,

  91. the ugly duckling

  92. will become a swan,

  93. and then

  94. it will

  95. take revenge,

  96. and the bad guys

  97. suffer for what they have done.

  98. That

  99. will be in our mind,

  100. but I wonder

  101. whether we would

  102. also wait at the same time

  103. to

  104. hope that

  105. the bad guys

  106. would

  107. say sorry,

  108. and repent,

  109. and get forgiven,

  110. and then

  111. they become good friends again.

  112. I think that is not very common,

  113. we don't

  114. think so much about it,

  115. because

  116. if the movie is like that,

  117. nobody will watch

  118. it,

  119. I suppose,

  120. because it's not entertaining

  121. very much,

  122. because in our culture,

  123. personal rights,

  124. human rights,

  125. is very important,

  126. and if

  127. we

  128. dare to violate it,

  129. you will

  130. be punished,

  131. and you should be punished,

  132. and we expect that

  133. to be.

  134. And so

  135. we are not

  136. very

  137. culturally,

  138. we are not

  139. good

  140. at seeking

  141. forgiveness,

  142. or giving

  143. forgiveness.

  144. So today,

  145. we are considering

  146. this,

  147. especially in our,

  148. as a church,

  149. as God's people,

  150. how we should

  151. interact

  152. with one another,

  153. and this,

  154. because as we gather,

  155. there will be conflicts,

  156. for sure,

  157. even

  158. husband and wife,

  159. I mean,

  160. conflicts happen

  161. all the time,

  162. and how do we

  163. handle that,

  164. right?

  165. And so,

  166. today,

  167. we will,

  168. with the question

  169. of rights,

  170. I will talk

  171. four things about

  172. rights.

  173. The first one

  174. is about

  175. personal rights,

  176. and when a

  177. personal right

  178. has been

  179. violated,

  180. why should I,

  181. or why should we

  182. forgive?

  183. The second one

  184. is about

  185. the right actions.

  186. If the conflict

  187. is not resolved,

  188. what do we do?

  189. And the third

  190. thing is the

  191. right to take

  192. action.

  193. How,

  194. who has the

  195. right to say,

  196. finally,

  197. what is,

  198. what is right

  199. and wrong,

  200. and take

  201. further action?

  202. And the fourth

  203. thing is right

  204. relations,

  205. right relationship.

  206. That is the

  207. end goal

  208. of

  209. chapter 18,

  210. I think.

  211. So,

  212. we'll start

  213. with,

  214. I will start

  215. with verse

  216. 21,

  217. so,

  218. I will come

  219. back to 15

  220. later.

  221. So,

  222. on verse

  223. 21,

  224. that is the

  225. famous

  226. question that

  227. Peter asked

  228. Jesus,

  229. Lord,

  230. how often

  231. will my

  232. brother sin

  233. against me,

  234. will I

  235. forgive him?

  236. As many as

  237. seven times?

  238. You see,

  239. what Peter

  240. is asking

  241. is,

  242. if somebody

  243. has been

  244. infringing on

  245. my rights,

  246. how many

  247. times

  248. should I

  249. forgive the

  250. person,

  251. that person

  252. is a

  253. brother,

  254. take note

  255. there,

  256. before I

  257. stop,

  258. I can

  259. stop

  260. forgiving.

  261. That is,

  262. because

  263. if we

  264. live in the

  265. world,

  266. he suppose

  267. if I

  268. forgive one

  269. time,

  270. I will be

  271. very generous,

  272. but because

  273. in the

  274. church

  275. condition,

  276. church

  277. circumstances,

  278. maybe seven

  279. times is

  280. enough,

  281. that's what

  282. is in

  283. Peter's

  284. mind.

  285. And

  286. then

  287. Jesus

  288. said,

  289. not seven

  290. times,

  291. but 77

  292. times.

  293. Don said

  294. 70 times,

  295. seven times,

  296. seven times,

  297. which is,

  298. you can

  299. translate that

  300. as well.

  301. It means

  302. that there's

  303. a lot of

  304. times,

  305. 70 times,

  306. or 490

  307. times.

  308. I mean,

  309. it basically

  310. means that

  311. Jesus is

  312. saying,

  313. you don't

  314. keep a

  315. record of

  316. how many

  317. times people

  318. have sinned

  319. against you.

  320. Because,

  321. as you know,

  322. I mean,

  323. like in a

  324. church

  325. situation,

  326. if there's

  327. 100 people,

  328. if you

  329. can remember

  330. each one,

  331. how many

  332. times each

  333. person has

  334. sinned

  335. against you,

  336. seven times

  337. is a lot

  338. of number

  339. to remember.

  340. But 70

  341. times,

  342. it's just

  343. impossible,

  344. unless you

  345. take a

  346. notebook and

  347. just record

  348. every week,

  349. who has

  350. sinned

  351. against me,

  352. and whether

  353. I've forgiven

  354. the person.

  355. So,

  356. I mean,

  357. life becomes

  358. unlivable like

  359. that.

  360. So,

  361. what Jesus

  362. meant was

  363. not,

  364. don't record,

  365. don't count.

  366. So,

  367. we can then

  368. imagine,

  369. Peter would

  370. ask the

  371. question that

  372. it's not

  373. fair.

  374. Don't I

  375. have my

  376. rights?

  377. I mean,

  378. how,

  379. why,

  380. why should

  381. I just

  382. keep

  383. copying

  384. the

  385. insults

  386. on people,

  387. or people

  388. being taken

  389. advantage

  390. by people.

  391. And,

  392. in

  393. anticipating

  394. Peter having

  395. this question,

  396. then,

  397. Jesus told

  398. him and

  399. the other

  400. disciples that

  401. the parable

  402. of the

  403. unforgiving

  404. servant,

  405. and we

  406. know that

  407. the servant

  408. owes the

  409. king,

  410. owes the

  411. king a

  412. last sum

  413. of money,

  414. and it's

  415. so large.

  416. I mean,

  417. in today's

  418. term,

  419. it's

  420. calculated

  421. to be

  422. six billion

  423. dollars.

  424. Six billion

  425. dollars,

  426. I mean,

  427. it's the

  428. number that

  429. we can

  430. hardly

  431. imagine.

  432. And,

  433. but,

  434. obviously,

  435. he couldn't

  436. pay for

  437. it.

  438. He begged

  439. for mercy,

  440. and the

  441. king had

  442. mercy on

  443. him,

  444. and

  445. canceled

  446. his debt.

  447. And,

  448. the next

  449. minute,

  450. he went

  451. out and

  452. saw a

  453. fellow

  454. servant,

  455. again,

  456. his fellow

  457. servant,

  458. same servant

  459. who was

  460. serving the

  461. king,

  462. who

  463. owed him

  464. a small

  465. debt,

  466. which is

  467. about

  468. $12,000.

  469. I mean,

  470. it's still a

  471. lot of

  472. money,

  473. $12,000,

  474. but compared

  475. to six

  476. billion,

  477. it's

  478. nothing.

  479. He

  480. demanded

  481. the

  482. fellow

  483. servant

  484. to

  485. repay

  486. him the

  487. debt,

  488. and the

  489. fellow

  490. servant

  491. pleaded

  492. for mercy,

  493. he couldn't

  494. pay,

  495. and then

  496. he put

  497. it in

  498. jail.

  499. And so,

  500. when the

  501. king found

  502. out about

  503. this,

  504. the king

  505. then put

  506. this

  507. unforgiveness

  508. in jail

  509. as well.

  510. So,

  511. we can,

  512. I mean,

  513. Peter thought

  514. that by

  515. forgiving seven

  516. times,

  517. he's already

  518. doing better

  519. than the

  520. Jews.

  521. The Jews

  522. who forgive,

  523. a good

  524. Jew,

  525. who forgive

  526. their fellow

  527. Jews three

  528. times.

  529. And,

  530. so for

  531. Peter to say

  532. seven times

  533. is very

  534. generous.

  535. But in

  536. this parable,

  537. Jesus is

  538. reminding

  539. Peter that

  540. even if

  541. you're the

  542. best servant

  543. of God,

  544. you still

  545. all got

  546. a large

  547. sum or

  548. a big

  549. debt,

  550. because

  551. the Jews

  552. or the

  553. Pharisees

  554. or the

  555. disciples

  556. who think

  557. that they

  558. are giving

  559. God a

  560. service,

  561. they are

  562. contributing

  563. to the

  564. kingdom of

  565. God.

  566. But Jesus

  567. is reminding

  568. Peter that

  569. it's not

  570. so.

  571. Because even

  572. if we

  573. serve God

  574. perfectly in

  575. terms of

  576. following the

  577. law and

  578. doing things,

  579. but our

  580. hearts would

  581. normally not

  582. be serving

  583. God.

  584. We are

  585. serving our

  586. purpose like

  587. the Pharisees.

  588. I mean,

  589. we do all

  590. the things

  591. for our

  592. own reputation

  593. or position.

  594. And so

  595. all the

  596. service that

  597. we appear

  598. to give

  599. service to

  600. God is

  601. actually for

  602. our own

  603. glory.

  604. And so

  605. we are

  606. stealing

  607. glory from

  608. God

  609. even as

  610. we serve

  611. him.

  612. So we

  613. can imagine

  614. Jesus is

  615. telling Peter

  616. to imagine

  617. one day

  618. God

  619. will come

  620. to you

  621. and demand

  622. you to

  623. pay back

  624. all the

  625. glory that

  626. you have

  627. stolen from

  628. him.

  629. and also

  630. all the

  631. neglect that

  632. you should

  633. have given

  634. to your

  635. brother and

  636. you have

  637. not.

  638. What will

  639. you do?

  640. Peter and

  641. Peter will

  642. think,

  643. I don't

  644. know what

  645. to do.

  646. I won't

  647. have any

  648. way to

  649. repeat that

  650. debt,

  651. but I

  652. will plead

  653. for mercy

  654. and promise

  655. that I

  656. will do

  657. better next

  658. time.

  659. I will

  660. love God

  661. as I

  662. should and

  663. love my

  664. brothers as

  665. I should.

  666. okay,

  667. I mean,

  668. God hears

  669. you and

  670. forgive you.

  671. But the

  672. next minute

  673. Peter,

  674. you meet

  675. a brother

  676. who owe

  677. you a

  678. small debt.

  679. And you

  680. already

  681. given this

  682. brother seven,

  683. extended the

  684. debt line

  685. seven times.

  686. I mean,

  687. this time is

  688. the eighth

  689. time you

  690. said,

  691. I won't

  692. extend it

  693. anymore,

  694. you must

  695. pay me

  696. back.

  697. And this

  698. brother

  699. couldn't

  700. pay you

  701. back,

  702. you take

  703. him to

  704. court.

  705. And put

  706. him to

  707. jail.

  708. So,

  709. Peter,

  710. you have

  711. broken your

  712. promise.

  713. What do

  714. you think

  715. God does

  716. for you?

  717. So that

  718. is basically

  719. what the

  720. parable

  721. is about.

  722. And Jesus

  723. is telling

  724. us that in

  725. the kingdom

  726. of God,

  727. people do

  728. not think

  729. in terms

  730. of personal

  731. rights.

  732. Because they

  733. are so

  734. overwhelmed

  735. by the

  736. forgiveness

  737. that they

  738. have received

  739. from God

  740. that they

  741. basically

  742. lose

  743. themselves

  744. in that

  745. amazement.

  746. So you

  747. can imagine

  748. if you

  749. borrow $6

  750. million

  751. from the

  752. bank,

  753. from a

  754. bank,

  755. and you

  756. couldn't

  757. repay it,

  758. and the

  759. bank

  760. cancels

  761. your $6

  762. million

  763. debt.

  764. Would you

  765. care if

  766. your brother

  767. all used

  768. $12?

  769. for any

  770. person of

  771. logic and

  772. heart,

  773. you won't

  774. care about

  775. how much

  776. other people

  777. owe you

  778. if you

  779. know how

  780. much you

  781. owe God

  782. and how

  783. much debt

  784. God has

  785. cancelled.

  786. So if

  787. we are not

  788. forgiving,

  789. that means

  790. we have

  791. not tasted

  792. the forgiveness

  793. of God,

  794. or we have

  795. not understood

  796. the forgiveness

  797. of God,

  798. I understand

  799. that sometimes,

  800. as Don just

  801. announced,

  802. that sometimes

  803. it's actually

  804. very hard for

  805. us to

  806. forgive,

  807. because the

  808. hurt is so

  809. deep.

  810. But I

  811. think the

  812. important thing

  813. is that we

  814. do have a

  815. desire to

  816. forgive.

  817. We may

  818. not be able

  819. to do it

  820. straight away,

  821. but at

  822. least the

  823. desire is

  824. there to

  825. tell God

  826. that I

  827. want to

  828. forgive,

  829. but I

  830. find it

  831. hard.

  832. If we

  833. do have

  834. that desire,

  835. I think

  836. the Holy

  837. Spirit is

  838. already

  839. working in

  840. our hearts

  841. for it.

  842. Sometimes

  843. people who

  844. ask for

  845. forgiveness

  846. may not

  847. be sincere.

  848. We know

  849. that.

  850. They say,

  851. I'm sorry,

  852. but they

  853. are not

  854. actually

  855. sorry.

  856. What do

  857. we do

  858. then?

  859. Or sometimes

  860. people,

  861. just like

  862. in this

  863. story,

  864. just keep

  865. sinning

  866. against you.

  867. What do

  868. you do

  869. then?

  870. so we

  871. will come

  872. back to

  873. verse 15

  874. to look

  875. at the

  876. actions

  877. that we

  878. should take

  879. if we

  880. are suffering

  881. or we

  882. have been

  883. wrong,

  884. what do we

  885. do if the

  886. other party

  887. has not

  888. come to

  889. apologize?

  890. So there

  891. are, I

  892. will put

  893. down in

  894. five points

  895. just quickly,

  896. because verse

  897. 15 to

  898. 17 will

  899. take the

  900. whole sermon

  901. at least.

  902. So I

  903. was, first

  904. of all,

  905. initiative.

  906. So if we

  907. find that

  908. our relationship

  909. has been

  910. strained,

  911. we should

  912. be the

  913. one who

  914. take

  915. initiative

  916. to

  917. reestablish

  918. the

  919. relationship.

  920. So we

  921. should talk

  922. to the

  923. person that

  924. has wronged

  925. us or

  926. have not

  927. sincerely

  928. apologized.

  929. we should

  930. help the

  931. person to

  932. understand the

  933. damage that's

  934. done to

  935. the relationship,

  936. the hurt that's

  937. caused.

  938. It's not

  939. easy, okay,

  940. to do that.

  941. Unless we

  942. do it often

  943. enough, we

  944. just don't

  945. know how to

  946. do it, but

  947. we have to

  948. start somewhere.

  949. We need to

  950. have the

  951. right place,

  952. so we

  953. don't just

  954. in the

  955. public area

  956. and talk

  957. about this.

  958. Right

  959. timing,

  960. like if

  961. the person

  962. is busy

  963. with something

  964. else,

  965. occupied with

  966. something

  967. else,

  968. it's not

  969. a good

  970. time to

  971. talk about

  972. it.

  973. And the

  974. right attitude,

  975. the attitude

  976. will be the

  977. next thing

  978. that is,

  979. we talk

  980. about,

  981. this is not

  982. to protect

  983. our rights,

  984. but to

  985. restore

  986. relationship.

  987. If you

  988. have this

  989. in mind,

  990. then the

  991. way we

  992. talk will

  993. be gentler,

  994. not coming

  995. down as

  996. someone

  997. aggressive,

  998. and also

  999. the attitude

  1000. of caring

  1001. for the

  1002. other party,

  1003. not so

  1004. much

  1005. condemning.

  1006. So we

  1007. also want

  1008. to consider,

  1009. not only our

  1010. rights have

  1011. been infringed,

  1012. we want to

  1013. talk about,

  1014. if you see

  1015. a brother

  1016. sinning against

  1017. somebody else,

  1018. somebody who's

  1019. weaker and

  1020. unable to

  1021. defend

  1022. themselves,

  1023. I think we

  1024. should still

  1025. talk to

  1026. the brother

  1027. as well,

  1028. or the

  1029. sister,

  1030. about this.

  1031. Or even

  1032. if you see

  1033. somebody who's

  1034. harming

  1035. himself,

  1036. himself,

  1037. herself,

  1038. by addiction,

  1039. alcohol,

  1040. pornography,

  1041. bambling,

  1042. all these

  1043. things,

  1044. I think we

  1045. should,

  1046. even though

  1047. it's not

  1048. sinning against

  1049. me or

  1050. ourselves,

  1051. then we

  1052. should still

  1053. talk to

  1054. the person.

  1055. So that

  1056. is our

  1057. attitude.

  1058. And then

  1059. there's the

  1060. steps that

  1061. we take,

  1062. that is

  1063. privacy.

  1064. So the

  1065. third thing

  1066. would be

  1067. privacy,

  1068. that is

  1069. when we

  1070. try to

  1071. settle

  1072. conflicts,

  1073. bear in

  1074. mind privacy

  1075. because we

  1076. do not

  1077. want to

  1078. publish the

  1079. whole thing

  1080. to everyone.

  1081. So as

  1082. the Lord

  1083. say,

  1084. it's one

  1085. to one

  1086. to start

  1087. with.

  1088. If it

  1089. doesn't get

  1090. resolved,

  1091. you get

  1092. some weaknesses,

  1093. so small

  1094. group leader,

  1095. or another

  1096. elder,

  1097. or somebody

  1098. else who

  1099. is appropriate

  1100. to talk

  1101. to the

  1102. person.

  1103. And only

  1104. if it's

  1105. not resolved

  1106. that you

  1107. bring the

  1108. whole matter

  1109. to the

  1110. church.

  1111. And then

  1112. so the

  1113. church can

  1114. make the

  1115. decision

  1116. or make

  1117. a judgment

  1118. on this

  1119. case.

  1120. And there

  1121. is the,

  1122. we also

  1123. need to

  1124. consider the

  1125. cause of

  1126. doing it.

  1127. sometimes

  1128. we try

  1129. to resolve

  1130. the

  1131. conflict

  1132. that it

  1133. may not

  1134. be

  1135. resolvable.

  1136. We thank

  1137. God that

  1138. most of

  1139. the time

  1140. it is

  1141. resolvable,

  1142. one to

  1143. one

  1144. level.

  1145. Sometimes

  1146. you go

  1147. to one

  1148. to,

  1149. many to

  1150. one,

  1151. some

  1152. two or

  1153. three to

  1154. one.

  1155. But in

  1156. reality,

  1157. in the

  1158. church

  1159. situation,

  1160. it's very

  1161. rare for

  1162. the case

  1163. to bring

  1164. up to

  1165. the

  1166. whole

  1167. church.

  1168. For my

  1169. last ten

  1170. years being

  1171. involved in

  1172. the

  1173. eldership,

  1174. there's none

  1175. of these

  1176. cases ever

  1177. come to

  1178. this.

  1179. Just because

  1180. by the

  1181. second stage,

  1182. when there

  1183. are two

  1184. or three

  1185. talking to

  1186. one, if

  1187. it doesn't

  1188. get resolved,

  1189. the person

  1190. usually leave

  1191. the church

  1192. and they

  1193. just go to

  1194. another

  1195. church.

  1196. church.

  1197. And that's

  1198. the cause

  1199. of it,

  1200. when there's

  1201. not resolved

  1202. on both

  1203. sides.

  1204. And the

  1205. other cause

  1206. would be

  1207. reputation,

  1208. because the

  1209. person who

  1210. leave the

  1211. church would

  1212. usually get

  1213. asked,

  1214. why did

  1215. you leave

  1216. the church?

  1217. So then

  1218. he would

  1219. talk about

  1220. the hurt

  1221. that he

  1222. received

  1223. by somebody

  1224. in the

  1225. church.

  1226. But those

  1227. who left

  1228. in the

  1229. church,

  1230. who are

  1231. involved in

  1232. it,

  1233. because of

  1234. privacy,

  1235. they don't

  1236. tend to

  1237. talk about

  1238. their side

  1239. of the

  1240. story.

  1241. And so

  1242. whoever

  1243. tries to

  1244. resolve

  1245. problems,

  1246. sometimes

  1247. they will

  1248. be the

  1249. ones paying

  1250. for the

  1251. price for

  1252. doing it.

  1253. Just be

  1254. mindful of

  1255. this as

  1256. well when

  1257. we try to

  1258. resolve

  1259. conflicts.

  1260. Sorry,

  1261. I need to

  1262. hurry.

  1263. So we

  1264. will go

  1265. to the

  1266. next,

  1267. from

  1268. 18 to

  1269. 20.

  1270. It's

  1271. talked about

  1272. here,

  1273. the church

  1274. has got

  1275. the final

  1276. authority to

  1277. decide on

  1278. a conflict.

  1279. Who gave

  1280. the church

  1281. that authority?

  1282. So that's

  1283. 18 to

  1284. 20.

  1285. Jesus is

  1286. saying that

  1287. God has

  1288. given the

  1289. church

  1290. authority to

  1291. decide in

  1292. terms of

  1293. the binding

  1294. and losing.

  1295. And of course,

  1296. if the church

  1297. went through a

  1298. trade,

  1299. gather in

  1300. Jesus'

  1301. name,

  1302. and God

  1303. will guide

  1304. the church

  1305. for the

  1306. decision.

  1307. The question

  1308. would be,

  1309. would the

  1310. church,

  1311. even as

  1312. the church

  1313. make a

  1314. decision,

  1315. to make a

  1316. judgment,

  1317. would the

  1318. church always

  1319. be right?

  1320. It depends

  1321. on what

  1322. you define

  1323. as right.

  1324. How do you

  1325. know something

  1326. is right or

  1327. wrong?

  1328. Sometimes we

  1329. don't actually

  1330. know or

  1331. can never

  1332. know.

  1333. in

  1334. 1748,

  1335. Jonathan

  1336. Edwards,

  1337. the famous

  1338. preacher in

  1339. America,

  1340. was dismissed

  1341. by his own

  1342. church.

  1343. Because the

  1344. church,

  1345. by that

  1346. tradition of

  1347. the church

  1348. is that

  1349. the Lord's

  1350. Supper was

  1351. open to

  1352. anyone,

  1353. whether they

  1354. are Christian

  1355. or not.

  1356. So this

  1357. is a means

  1358. of the

  1359. church to

  1360. attract

  1361. non-Christians

  1362. who come

  1363. to church

  1364. and start

  1365. joining the

  1366. church.

  1367. But Jonathan

  1368. Edwards insisted

  1369. that only

  1370. Christians,

  1371. people who

  1372. have repented

  1373. of their

  1374. sins,

  1375. should take

  1376. part in

  1377. the Lord's

  1378. Supper.

  1379. So the

  1380. church came

  1381. together and

  1382. out of the

  1383. 230 people,

  1384. only 10%

  1385. voted for

  1386. Jonathan

  1387. Edwards.

  1388. The others

  1389. were against

  1390. him.

  1391. So Jonathan

  1392. Edwards was

  1393. dismissed.

  1394. Jonathan Edwards

  1395. wasn't

  1396. bitter about

  1397. this.

  1398. He was

  1399. very calm.

  1400. He gave

  1401. a farewell

  1402. sermon and

  1403. in the

  1404. sermon he

  1405. told,

  1406. advised the

  1407. church to

  1408. keep their

  1409. unity.

  1410. I mean,

  1411. don't divide

  1412. because of

  1413. this.

  1414. And he

  1415. just went

  1416. on and

  1417. do some

  1418. other

  1419. ministries.

  1420. So is

  1421. it a right

  1422. or wrong

  1423. decision?

  1424. It's very

  1425. hard to say.

  1426. the church

  1427. definitely

  1428. have

  1429. possibly the

  1430. best pastor

  1431. and preacher

  1432. American ever

  1433. had.

  1434. But in

  1435. God's

  1436. sovereignty,

  1437. the church

  1438. has set

  1439. loose a

  1440. very powerful

  1441. missionary to

  1442. the Indians

  1443. because they

  1444. dismissed

  1445. Jonathan

  1446. Edwards.

  1447. So we

  1448. can never

  1449. know in

  1450. terms of

  1451. right or

  1452. wrong in

  1453. there.

  1454. But in

  1455. God's

  1456. sovereignty,

  1457. things will

  1458. always turn

  1459. up right in

  1460. God's plan

  1461. in any

  1462. case.

  1463. So why

  1464. should we do

  1465. all these

  1466. things?

  1467. That is the

  1468. main point

  1469. of the

  1470. second half

  1471. of 18.

  1472. That is to

  1473. have the

  1474. right

  1475. relationship.

  1476. We try to

  1477. reestablish

  1478. relationship with

  1479. people and

  1480. with God.

  1481. And so

  1482. with the

  1483. forgiveness

  1484. and all

  1485. those going

  1486. on, we

  1487. are talking

  1488. about is

  1489. about

  1490. relationship.

  1491. You see

  1492. the word

  1493. righteousness

  1494. is not

  1495. only to

  1496. do the

  1497. right thing

  1498. in God's

  1499. eye, it's

  1500. actually to

  1501. have the

  1502. right

  1503. relationship.

  1504. Relationship

  1505. with God

  1506. and relationship

  1507. with man.

  1508. For example,

  1509. in Psalm

    Psalms 112:9

  1510. 112,

  1511. verse 9,

  1512. it says

  1513. that he

  1514. has

  1515. distributed

  1516. freely,

  1517. he has

  1518. given to

  1519. the poor,

  1520. his

  1521. righteousness

  1522. endures

  1523. forever.

  1524. And his

  1525. horn is

  1526. exorbitant

  1527. honor.

  1528. Righteousness

  1529. in here is

  1530. saying that

  1531. somebody is

  1532. generous,

  1533. distributed,

  1534. freely,

  1535. given to

  1536. the poor,

  1537. and so

  1538. he established

  1539. a relationship

  1540. with people,

  1541. the poor

  1542. people,

  1543. the needy

  1544. people,

  1545. and that's

  1546. righteousness.

  1547. And so

  1548. it is

  1549. important for

  1550. us to

  1551. know that

  1552. to be

  1553. considered

  1554. righteous,

  1555. it's not

  1556. only sort

  1557. of living

  1558. according to

  1559. God's

  1560. law,

  1561. but more

  1562. so is

  1563. having

  1564. the love

  1565. towards

  1566. God

  1567. and other

  1568. people.

  1569. And that

  1570. is the,

  1571. I suppose,

  1572. sum up

  1573. the message

  1574. of chapter

  1575. 18.

  1576. Then,

  1577. from this

  1578. understanding,

  1579. I will go

  1580. back to

  1581. the parable

  1582. of unforgiving

  1583. Because I

  1584. think there

  1585. are many

  1586. questions that

  1587. we will have

  1588. from this

  1589. parable.

  1590. I will

  1591. deal with

  1592. three

  1593. questions.

  1594. The question

  1595. one is,

  1596. is the

  1597. unforgiving

  1598. servant

  1599. a believer?

  1600. Is he

  1601. a sort

  1602. of,

  1603. according to

  1604. a Christian?

  1605. If he's

  1606. not a

  1607. believer,

  1608. how can

  1609. he be a

  1610. servant of

  1611. the king?

  1612. But if

  1613. he's a

  1614. believer,

  1615. how can

  1616. he be

  1617. condemned

  1618. by the

  1619. king at

  1620. the end?

  1621. How do

  1622. we resolve

  1623. this,

  1624. question?

  1625. We need

  1626. to think

  1627. about

  1628. relationship.

  1629. When the

  1630. unforgiving

  1631. servant

  1632. asked for

  1633. mercy,

  1634. do you

  1635. think he

  1636. have,

  1637. what did

  1638. he have

  1639. in mind?

  1640. Why did

  1641. he ask

  1642. for mercy?

  1643. So he

  1644. didn't want

  1645. to be

  1646. punished,

  1647. obviously.

  1648. Did he

  1649. have in

  1650. mind he

  1651. want to

  1652. reestablish

  1653. his

  1654. relationship

  1655. with the

  1656. king?

  1657. Possibly

  1658. not.

  1659. So his

  1660. mind is

  1661. about himself,

  1662. how he

  1663. can get

  1664. off the

  1665. punishment.

  1666. So the

  1667. relationship

  1668. is very

  1669. important in

  1670. here.

  1671. If we

  1672. go back

  1673. to,

  1674. if we

  1675. go to

  1676. Luke 15,

  1677. in Luke

  1678. 15 we

  1679. have the

  1680. parables of

  1681. the lost

  1682. sheep,

  1683. the lost

  1684. coin,

  1685. the lost

  1686. son.

  1687. Remember

  1688. Jesus was

  1689. talking to

  1690. the Pharisees

  1691. in Luke

  1692. 15 and

  1693. he first

  1694. mentioned the

  1695. lost sheep,

  1696. one lost

  1697. sheep with

  1698. 99 sheep

  1699. who didn't

  1700. think that

  1701. they were

  1702. lost.

  1703. The 99

  1704. sheep is

  1705. actually

  1706. referring to

  1707. the Pharisees,

  1708. people who

  1709. think that

  1710. they are

  1711. right with

  1712. God because

  1713. they have

  1714. followed the

  1715. law,

  1716. the

  1717. diligently,

  1718. but they

  1719. are not

  1720. actually,

  1721. their heart

  1722. is not

  1723. with God.

  1724. And then we

  1725. go to the

  1726. lost son.

  1727. The son is

  1728. lost,

  1729. the younger

  1730. son,

  1731. not because

  1732. he lost

  1733. his ways

  1734. or his

  1735. mind,

  1736. but he

  1737. lost his

  1738. relationship

  1739. with the

  1740. father.

  1741. When he

  1742. demanded his

  1743. inheritance,

  1744. he's already

  1745. considered his

  1746. father dead.

  1747. He didn't

  1748. actually care

  1749. about his

  1750. father.

  1751. So the

  1752. lost son

  1753. is about

  1754. people who

  1755. pay no

  1756. regard to

  1757. God,

  1758. who

  1759. who's

  1760. got his

  1761. pleasure.

  1762. He just

  1763. focused on

  1764. finding

  1765. pleasure in

  1766. life.

  1767. But the

  1768. lost son,

  1769. when he

  1770. realized that

  1771. worldly

  1772. pleasure

  1773. did not

  1774. last or

  1775. did not

  1776. satisfy,

  1777. he remembered

  1778. the goodness

  1779. of the

  1780. father.

  1781. So he

  1782. went home

  1783. and apologized.

  1784. He said,

  1785. I sinned

  1786. against heaven

  1787. and I sinned

  1788. against you,

  1789. the father.

  1790. So it

  1791. shows that

  1792. he wants

  1793. to reestablish

  1794. relationship

  1795. with the

  1796. father.

  1797. In the

  1798. story of

  1799. the lost

  1800. son,

  1801. there's also

  1802. the older

  1803. brother who

  1804. didn't think

  1805. that he

  1806. was lost

  1807. because he

  1808. had been

  1809. serving the

  1810. father faithfully.

  1811. But he

  1812. was equally

  1813. lost because

  1814. he did not

  1815. have a right

  1816. relationship with

  1817. the father

  1818. or the

  1819. younger

  1820. brother.

  1821. So the

  1822. older brother

  1823. represents people

  1824. who are lost

  1825. because his

  1826. God is

  1827. religion.

  1828. religion to

  1829. him is

  1830. the most

  1831. important.

  1832. He worships,

  1833. he's not

  1834. worshipping God,

  1835. he's worshipping

  1836. religion.

  1837. It means that

  1838. he's worshipping

  1839. himself because

  1840. by religion he's

  1841. establishing his

  1842. position,

  1843. his reputation.

  1844. And so if

  1845. we look at

  1846. this parable,

  1847. we know that

  1848. again,

  1849. the right

  1850. relationship is

  1851. very important.

  1852. so we

  1853. come back

  1854. to this

  1855. servant,

  1856. is he a

  1857. believer?

  1858. Now,

  1859. it is not

  1860. easy to

  1861. define a

  1862. believer.

  1863. While it's

  1864. quite easy to

  1865. define an

  1866. unbeliever,

  1867. unbeliever is

  1868. like the

  1869. younger son

  1870. who did

  1871. not pay

  1872. any attention

  1873. to God

  1874. at all

  1875. and have

  1876. nothing to

  1877. do with

  1878. God.

  1879. But to

  1880. define

  1881. believer is

  1882. harder.

  1883. You see,

  1884. most of

  1885. us,

  1886. when we

  1887. come to

  1888. believe in

  1889. God,

  1890. we usually

  1891. believe in

  1892. God because

  1893. God is

  1894. useful to

  1895. us.

  1896. God can

  1897. help us,

  1898. God can

  1899. make us

  1900. happier,

  1901. or suffer

  1902. less.

  1903. So that

  1904. is still

  1905. about

  1906. myself

  1907. when I

  1908. come to

  1909. believe in

  1910. God.

  1911. Am I a

  1912. believer then?

  1913. Possibly.

  1914. But if

  1915. at some

  1916. stage I

  1917. can see the

  1918. beauty of

  1919. God and

  1920. I want

  1921. to know

  1922. God and

  1923. love him

  1924. and love

  1925. other people

  1926. as well,

  1927. then I'm

  1928. coming to

  1929. believe in

  1930. God not

  1931. because he's

  1932. useful to

  1933. me, but

  1934. because he's

  1935. beautiful.

  1936. And I

  1937. think Jesus

  1938. is talking

  1939. to Peter

  1940. in this

  1941. level of

  1942. belief,

  1943. desire to

  1944. have a

  1945. right

  1946. relationship

  1947. with God.

  1948. And that

  1949. is very

  1950. important to

  1951. the church

  1952. definitely

  1953. because if

  1954. you have

  1955. desire to

  1956. have the

  1957. right

  1958. relationship

  1959. with God

  1960. and then

  1961. you have

  1962. desire to

  1963. have the

  1964. right

  1965. relationship

  1966. with one

  1967. another.

  1968. And that's

  1969. how the

  1970. church will

  1971. grow and

  1972. be attractive

  1973. to other

  1974. people as

  1975. well.

  1976. So that is

  1977. the first

  1978. question.

  1979. The second

  1980. question would

  1981. be, I

  1982. imagine

  1983. Peter

  1984. asked

  1985. Jesus,

  1986. he said,

  1987. Peter could

  1988. say,

  1989. Lord, I

  1990. know that I

  1991. need to

  1992. love God

  1993. for all my

  1994. heart, all

  1995. my soul,

  1996. all my

  1997. strength,

  1998. all my

  1999. might,

  2000. and I

  2001. should love

  2002. my brother

  2003. as myself.

  2004. But I'm

  2005. not confident

  2006. that I can

  2007. keep it up

  2008. all the

  2009. time.

  2010. If I

  2011. fell,

  2012. would God

  2013. put me in

  2014. prison?

  2015. That's from

  2016. this,

  2017. parable.

  2018. So we

  2019. can imagine

  2020. also how

  2021. Jesus will

  2022. answer this

  2023. question.

  2024. Jesus will

  2025. say,

  2026. Peter, I'm

  2027. glad that you

  2028. have no

  2029. confidence in

  2030. yourself.

  2031. You are

  2032. always full of

  2033. confidence,

  2034. but it's

  2035. good that you

  2036. have no

  2037. confidence.

  2038. And it's

  2039. not a

  2040. question if

  2041. you will

  2042. fail, you

  2043. will fail

  2044. again and

  2045. again.

  2046. In the

  2047. parable,

  2048. the unforgiveness

  2049. servant

  2050. needed to

  2051. pay all

  2052. his debt

  2053. before he

  2054. can be

  2055. released

  2056. from the

  2057. prison.

  2058. But in

  2059. reality,

  2060. one day

  2061. you will

  2062. understand

  2063. that your

  2064. debt

  2065. has been

  2066. paid by

  2067. someone.

  2068. Your debt

  2069. in the

  2070. past or

  2071. in the

  2072. future

  2073. will be

  2074. paid.

  2075. And it

  2076. will be

  2077. paid by

  2078. me.

  2079. And that's

  2080. why I

  2081. have been

  2082. telling you

  2083. about my

  2084. debt

  2085. on the

  2086. cross.

  2087. So that

  2088. is the

  2089. second

  2090. question.

  2091. The third

  2092. question is

  2093. Peter may

  2094. then ask

  2095. Jesus,

  2096. oh, in

  2097. that case,

  2098. you have

  2099. given me

  2100. an hour

  2101. of jail

  2102. card.

  2103. Then why

  2104. should I

  2105. worry to

  2106. be unforgiving?

  2107. I mean,

  2108. you have

  2109. already paid

  2110. my debt.

  2111. I can't

  2112. just go

  2113. on and

  2114. live my

  2115. life and

  2116. be unforgiving.

  2117. I won't

  2118. be a

  2119. job.

  2120. God will

  2121. not put

  2122. people into

  2123. prison.

  2124. Why would

  2125. Jesus answer

  2126. this question?

  2127. Jesus would

  2128. say,

  2129. Peter, you

  2130. don't

  2131. understand.

  2132. When you

  2133. are being

  2134. unforgiving

  2135. to your

  2136. brother,

  2137. you are

  2138. putting

  2139. yourself in

  2140. prison,

  2141. in a prison

  2142. voluntary.

  2143. Many

  2144. people in

  2145. the world

  2146. live in

  2147. prison

  2148. voluntary.

  2149. We live

  2150. in prison

  2151. of

  2152. bitterness,

  2153. prison

  2154. of

  2155. jealousy,

  2156. prison

  2157. of

  2158. hatred,

  2159. prison

  2160. of

  2161. anger.

  2162. There's

  2163. so many

  2164. prisons that

  2165. we build

  2166. for ourselves.

  2167. God doesn't

  2168. need to

  2169. put you

  2170. in prison.

  2171. You

  2172. put yourself

  2173. in prison.

  2174. When you

  2175. insist

  2176. that you

  2177. want to

  2178. protect

  2179. your own

  2180. rights,

  2181. you are

  2182. living for

  2183. yourself.

  2184. The longer

  2185. you live

  2186. for yourself,

  2187. the more

  2188. prison you

  2189. will build.

  2190. and one

  2191. day you

  2192. might find

  2193. that you

  2194. cannot

  2195. repent

  2196. anymore.

  2197. You

  2198. can't

  2199. even use

  2200. that

  2201. out

  2202. of

  2203. cut

  2204. because

  2205. you

  2206. forget.

  2207. You

  2208. are so

  2209. lost in

  2210. it.

  2211. You

  2212. are lost

  2213. in your

  2214. resentment,

  2215. in your

  2216. bitterness.

  2217. You

  2218. don't think

  2219. that one

  2220. day you

  2221. can

  2222. suddenly

  2223. come back

  2224. to me.

  2225. You

  2226. might not

  2227. because

  2228. if you

  2229. just live

  2230. for yourself,

  2231. you will

  2232. lose

  2233. yourself.

  2234. but if

  2235. you live

  2236. for God

  2237. and other

  2238. people,

  2239. you will

  2240. find

  2241. yourself.

  2242. Peter,

  2243. I've

  2244. come to

  2245. set the

  2246. prisoners

  2247. free.

  2248. Wouldn't

  2249. you

  2250. follow me?

  2251. Wouldn't

  2252. you

  2253. trust me

  2254. now?

  2255. Let's

  2256. pray.

  2257. Father

  2258. God,

  2259. we

  2260. know that

  2261. we are

  2262. unable

  2263. to

  2264. love you

  2265. as we

  2266. should

  2267. or our

  2268. fellow

  2269. brothers and

  2270. sisters

  2271. as we

  2272. should.

  2273. And so

  2274. many times

  2275. we insist

  2276. of our

  2277. own rights

  2278. and demand

  2279. to be

  2280. respected.

  2281. Father,

  2282. help us

  2283. to be

  2284. free from

  2285. such

  2286. prisons.

  2287. Help us

  2288. to be

  2289. able to

  2290. say

  2291. that it's

  2292. no longer

  2293. I who

  2294. live.

  2295. And

  2296. therefore,

  2297. I do

  2298. not need

  2299. to

  2300. protect

  2301. my own

  2302. interests.

  2303. But it's

  2304. Christ who

  2305. lives in

  2306. me.

  2307. I already

  2308. have

  2309. Christ in

  2310. me.

  2311. So at

  2312. times,

  2313. I'm not

  2314. confident

  2315. that I

  2316. can keep

  2317. up with

  2318. loving you

  2319. other people

  2320. because I

  2321. still live

  2322. in the

  2323. flesh.

  2324. but I

  2325. do not

  2326. live by

  2327. trusting

  2328. myself.

  2329. I live

  2330. by the

  2331. faith,

  2332. having faith

  2333. in the

  2334. Lord Jesus

  2335. Christ who

  2336. loved me

  2337. and gave

  2338. himself for

  2339. me.

  2340. Thank you,

  2341. Lord.

  2342. We pray in

  2343. Jesus' name.

  2344. Amen.
