  1. Today's Bible reading will be from Matthew, reading from chapter 21, verses 1-17.

  2. !

  3. This took place to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

  4. Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.

  5. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

  6. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.

  7. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

  8. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,

  9. Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

  10. And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying,

  11. Who is this?

  12. And the crowd said,

  13. This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.

  14. And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple.

  15. And he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.

  16. He said to them,

  17. It is written,

  18. My house shall be called a house of prayer,

  19. but you make it a den of robbers.

  20. And the blinds and the lame came to him in the temple,

  21. and he healed them.

  22. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did,

  23. and the children crying out in the temple,

  24. Hosanna to the Son of David!

  25. They were indignant.

  26. And they said to him,

  27. Do you hear what these are saying?

  28. And Jesus said to them,

  29. Yes.

  30. Have you never read?

  31. Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies,

  32. you have prepared praise.

  33. And leaving them,

  34. he went out of the city to Bethany

  35. and lodged there.

  36. This is God's word to us today.

  37. May we be blessed by listening to it.

  38. Well, good morning, everyone.

  39. Will you pray with me as we come to God's word?

  40. Our Father, as we just sang,

  41. I pray that through your word and by your spirit,

  42. you would convince our hearts to crown you

  43. the Lord of peace.

  44. Lord, convince our hearts to crown you.

  45. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. Well, when leaders start their time in power,

  49. how they begin often isn't an accident.

  50. It's often very careful.

  51. So there's a new coach.

  52. I'm so sorry, another sport illustration.

  53. I've got to find better illustrations.

  54. But there's this new coach for a soccer team in England.

  55. And every coach would start their leadership

  56. by calling a meeting,

  57. the players, the coaching staff,

  58. the owners of the club.

  59. But this guy's done something different.

  60. And everyone noticed it.

  61. He also invited the kitchen staff.

  62. He invites the groundskeepers.

  63. He invited the bus drivers.

  64. He invited everyone.

  65. And everyone, before he said a word,

  66. just in that one act,

  67. he has symbolised what his leadership wants to be about.

  68. It's a clear message.

  69. He's going to be honouring the contribution of all.

  70. Or if you want to read another example,

  71. read the official webpage for President Trump's

  72. first 100 hours in his second term in office

  73. to kick off America's golden age.

  74. It's very intentional what he did first.

  75. There's investment in American business.

  76. There's tearing down what his predecessor built up.

  77. There's securing the American border.

  78. There's deportation flights immediately.

  79. What a leader does first really characterises

  80. what their rule is going to be about.

  81. Matthew has spent 20 chapters so far

  82. trying to convince us, persuade us,

  83. Jesus is the greatest king history has ever known.

  84. Fulfilling all the Old Testament hopes.

  85. But until now, Jesus has been very, very careful

  86. not to go public.

  87. When we re-looked at chapter 16,

  88. as soon as the disciples confess,

  89. you are the king,

  90. his immediate words is,

  91. he strictly charged the disciples

  92. to tell no one

  93. that he was the Christ.

  94. Why?

  95. Because he won't let people's expectations define him.

  96. He won't let your expectations define him.

  97. My expectations.

  98. He's going to define himself.

  99. Now as we enter Jerusalem,

  100. he's chosen this time to go very public.

  101. He's very intentionally orchestrating this event

  102. to define what his rule is about.

  103. He's picked the most important time in the Jewish calendar,

  104. the most religious significance.

  105. There's crowds coming to Jerusalem for Passover,

  106. God's deliverance, salvation.

  107. He's picked the most important place.

  108. We're on the Mount of Olives,

  109. which was a bit higher than Jerusalem.

  110. You could see the city,

  111. the capital.

  112. You could see the temple.

  113. Two centuries earlier,

  114. Simon Maccabees had defeated foreign armies

  115. to secure Israel's independence.

  116. He defeated the armies

  117. and he rode into Jerusalem

  118. riding his war horse

  119. and people,

  120. there was a parade.

  121. There was cheering,

  122. like the end of World War II.

  123. There was cheering in the street.

  124. There was people putting palm branches down on the ground.

  125. What does Jesus do?

  126. He doesn't come in on a war horse.

  127. A donkey.

  128. Not only a donkey,

  129. this small baby,

  130. well,

  131. kid donkey.

  132. It's never been ridden,

  133. Mark's gospel says.

  134. If you saw it,

  135. it's like,

  136. it's almost laughable.

  137. It's like a huge man

  138. riding this little motorbike.

  139. Why did he choose that?

  140. What is this symbolic act telling us?

  141. He's defining his rule.

  142. What's he telling us by doing this?

  143. Well,

  144. it emphasises his lowliness,

  145. his weakness,

  146. his humility,

  147. even humiliation.

  148. But he's also making the greatest claim

  149. a human being has ever made about himself.

  150. It wasn't the early church

  151. who just misinterpreted Jesus' sayings

  152. and go,

  153. we're going to give him the title Lord.

  154. He is taking that title for himself.

  155. He is ascribing the title Lord to himself.

  156. When he sends his disciples,

  157. go get these donkeys,

  158. and if anyone asks you,

  159. why are you taking our donkeys?

  160. Tell them the Lord.

  161. He hasn't used that phrase before now.

  162. Tell him the Lord.

  163. He knows exactly what he's doing.

  164. The symbolism,

  165. the crowds don't miss it.

  166. We might misunderstand it,

  167. but the crowds don't miss it.

  168. Solomon,

  169. David's son,

  170. when he was crowned king,

  171. that was done

  172. by David giving instructions,

  173. saying,

  174. get him to ride on my donkey.

  175. And that declared

  176. that succession.

  177. And Zachariah,

  178. the prophet Zachariah,

  179. picks this up.

  180. The true son of David,

  181. who will have an eternal kingdom,

  182. behold,

  183. your king is coming to you,

  184. humble and mounted on a donkey.

  185. He is ascribing himself

  186. as fulfilling all the Old Testament hopes.

  187. There is a frenzy.

  188. There's a parade.

  189. People understand what he's doing.

  190. There's messianic hopes.

  191. There's fever pitch.

  192. This is an exciting time.

  193. They are crying out,

  194. Hosanna,

  195. which apparently transliterates the Hebrew,

  196. save us.

  197. They're praising God,

  198. finally.

  199. You've sent your Messiah,

  200. save us.

  201. This is an exciting scene.

  202. Ordinary clothes,

  203. ordinary followers,

  204. a ridiculous donkey,

  205. and ordinary followers still today,

  206. I'm sorry to say.

  207. Despite appearances,

  208. he is saying,

  209. I'm the greatest king.

  210. I am that king.

  211. It's not others saying it to him.

  212. He's claiming it.

  213. That's what this little donkey says.

  214. So are you willing to join the parade

  215. and the celebration

  216. of this donkey-riding king?

  217. There's graffiti.

  218. Graffiti in Rome,

  219. on a wall in Rome,

  220. dated to about 200 AD,

  221. and it's this sketch.

  222. It looks like a children's drawing,

  223. but it's probably a sketch of a man

  224. worshipping what looks like the figure of a man on a cross

  225. with a donkey's head.

  226. And the inscription says,

  227. Alex,

  228. I can't even say it.

  229. I'm just going to say Alex.

  230. Alex worships his God.

  231. Roman Empire,

  232. they worship power.

  233. This is ridiculous.

  234. You Christians,

  235. worshipping

  236. this donkey-riding king.

  237. His weakness,

  238. it's not attractive.

  239. It's not attractive to this world.

  240. But then,

  241. but then,

  242. other people find him

  243. not attractive for a different reason,

  244. like Ricky Gervais,

  245. comedian.

  246. He wrote an article,

  247. and Jesus,

  248. he says,

  249. Jesus was a man.

  250. And if you forget all that rubbish

  251. about being half God,

  252. and forget that,

  253. believe the non-super,

  254. if you just believe the non-supernatural acts

  255. accredited to him,

  256. he was a man

  257. whose wise words

  258. many other men would still follow.

  259. His message was usually

  260. one of forgiveness and kindness.

  261. But this donkey-riding king,

  262. he's declaring himself,

  263. flawed,

  264. of the entire world.

  265. This world doesn't like

  266. his great claims.

  267. He's offensive.

  268. He's ridiculous.

  269. He doesn't fit

  270. what this world

  271. finds attractive,

  272. and that's exactly

  273. why he's worth following.

  274. Because he's so different

  275. from the rest of the world.

  276. So are we willing

  277. to follow this?

  278. Are we willing

  279. to celebrate,

  280. or are we embarrassed?

  281. The second thing

  282. this leader is declaring

  283. by this carefully chosen act

  284. is that he's not

  285. going to conquer

  286. through force,

  287. and power,

  288. and threat.

  289. It hints

  290. at how he's going

  291. to conquer the world.

  292. Not as every other

  293. kingdom of this world

  294. conquers.

  295. when our military

  296. showed

  297. our strength

  298. with the

  299. talisman saver

  300. exhibition,

  301. I didn't see

  302. us showing off

  303. our donkey

  304. collection.

  305. There's not

  306. an AUKUS agreement

  307. for producing

  308. more donkeys.

  309. peace.

  310. This king

  311. is going to

  312. conquer by peace.

  313. I'm not saying

  314. countries can't

  315. have military.

  316. That's part of

  317. the country's job

  318. to protect its citizens.

  319. But I'm just saying

  320. this kingdom

  321. is very,

  322. very,

  323. very different.

  324. He's going to be

  325. characterised by peace.

  326. Not by taking power

  327. and killing,

  328. but by losing power

  329. and dying.

  330. He's going to be

  331. humiliated.

  332. That's how he's

  333. going to conquer.

  334. This peace,

  335. he's going against

  336. the expectations

  337. of the crowd.

  338. They thought

  339. he was going to

  340. come in

  341. and destroy

  342. the nations,

  343. make Israel

  344. great again.

  345. He's going

  346. against that

  347. expectation.

  348. No,

  349. I'm going to

  350. conquer through

  351. peace.

  352. And the kind

  353. of peace

  354. I'm bringing

  355. is a greater

  356. peace than

  357. you're asking

  358. for.

  359. Now,

  360. Don Carson

  361. says something

  362. about this

  363. peace.

  364. I think he's

  365. on to something,

  366. but see what

  367. you think.

  368. If you were

  369. on holidays

  370. in the

  371. countryside

  372. and you

  373. thought,

  374. a fun

  375. activity for

  376. today,

  377. let's go

  378. horse riding.

  379. And just

  380. before you

  381. get on the

  382. horse,

  383. the instructor

  384. says,

  385. hey,

  386. by the

  387. way,

  388. no one's

  389. ever ridden

  390. this horse

  391. before.

  392. Would you

  393. go,

  394. what a

  395. privilege.

  396. I get to

  397. be first.

  398. Now,

  399. you're laughing

  400. because we

  401. all know

  402. common sense,

  403. you do not

  404. get on an

  405. animal that

  406. has never

  407. been ridden

  408. before.

  409. But that's

  410. exactly,

  411. and now put

  412. that animal

  413. in a parade

  414. of people

  415. screaming.

  416. And yet,

  417. it's just

  418. this little

  419. hint,

  420. I think

  421. Carson is

  422. on to

  423. something

  424. here,

  425. that under

  426. the hand

  427. of its

  428. Lord,

  429. this little

  430. animal is

  431. calm.

  432. The peace

  433. he's bringing

  434. is to the

  435. entire world.

  436. He's going

  437. to put the

  438. whole world,

  439. even nature,

  440. right.

  441. I think it's

  442. this little

  443. hint.

  444. He's

  445. fulfilling

  446. Old Testament

  447. hopes,

  448. and he's

  449. bringing

  450. peace,

  451. putting

  452. everything,

  453. he's going

  454. to put

  455. everything

  456. right

  457. by

  458. becoming

  459. last,

  460. by being

  461. humiliated,

  462. not by

  463. taking power,

  464. by losing

  465. it.

  466. That's his

  467. rule.

  468. And what

  469. he does

  470. next,

  471. we see

  472. the enemy

  473. he's come

  474. to save

  475. us from.

  476. The crowds

  477. thought,

  478. bring judgment

  479. on the

  480. Romans,

  481. but where

  482. does he

  483. attack?

  484. He doesn't

  485. attack the

  486. governor's

  487. palace.

  488. He attacks

  489. the worship

  490. at the

  491. temple.

  492. Verses

  493. 12 to

  494. 16,

  495. all happen

  496. in the

  497. temple.

  498. We are

  499. reminded

  500. repeatedly,

  501. the blind

  502. and lame

  503. came to

  504. him in

  505. the temple.

  506. The

  507. children

  508. are crying

  509. out

  510. Hosanna

  511. in the

  512. temple.

  513. That's

  514. where

  515. he attacks.

  516. So the

  517. scene here

  518. where he

  519. gets angry

  520. and drives

  521. out all

  522. who sold

  523. and bought,

  524. worshipers,

  525. pilgrims,

  526. they're coming

  527. for Passover

  528. festival,

  529. they need

  530. animals to

  531. sacrifice,

  532. they need

  533. to exchange

  534. their currency

  535. for God

  536. required a

  537. temple tax

  538. for the

  539. upkeep of

  540. the temple.

  541. You could

  542. easily see

  543. how this

  544. would be

  545. justified as

  546. this is what

  547. God wants

  548. us to do,

  549. to worship

  550. him.

  551. But they're in

  552. the outer

  553. court of the

  554. temple,

  555. which is where

  556. the nations

  557. were allowed

  558. to come in,

  559. where the

  560. lame and

  561. the sick

  562. and crippled

  563. priests even

  564. were allowed

  565. to come into

  566. that area

  567. to worship.

  568. They've

  569. turned a

  570. place of

  571. worship

  572. into a

  573. place to

  574. make money

  575. and have

  576. driven out

  577. the nations

  578. and the

  579. sick.

  580. He first

  581. quotes Isaiah,

  582. my house

  583. shall be

  584. called a

  585. house of

  586. prayer,

  587. and the

  588. end of

  589. that quote,

  590. for all

  591. nations.

  592. the immediate

  593. context of

  594. a lot of

  595. these Old

  596. Testament

  597. passages is

  598. he's claiming

  599. to be king

  600. of all

  601. nations.

  602. He's going

  603. to bring

  604. worship to

  605. God for

  606. all nations.

  607. He then

  608. quotes Jeremiah

  609. 7,

  610. the den of

  611. robbers.

  612. Instead of

  613. being a

  614. house of

  615. prayer,

  616. proper

  617. worship,

  618. let me read

  619. a bit from

  620. Jeremiah 7.

  621. will you

  622. steal,

  623. murder,

  624. commit

  625. adultery,

  626. swear

  627. falsely,

  628. make

  629. offerings to

  630. Baal,

  631. and go

  632. after other

  633. gods that

  634. you have

  635. not known,

  636. and then

  637. come and

  638. stand before

  639. me in

  640. this house,

  641. which is

  642. called by

  643. my name,

  644. and say,

  645. we are

  646. delivered,

  647. only to

  648. go on

  649. doing all

  650. these

  651. abominations?

  652. Has

  653. this house

  654. which is

  655. called by

  656. my name

  657. become a

  658. den of

  659. robbers in

  660. your eyes?

  661. Now,

  662. because you

  663. have done

  664. all these

  665. things,

  666. declares the

  667. Lord,

  668. and when I

  669. spoke to

  670. you persistently,

  671. you did not

  672. listen,

  673. and when I

  674. called you,

  675. you did not

  676. answer,

  677. I will cast

  678. you out of

  679. my sight.

  680. They had a

  681. false security

  682. in their

  683. religious deeds,

  684. but they

  685. weren't

  686. listening to

  687. what God

  688. is saying.

  689. our greatest

  690. problem is

  691. our worship

  692. problem.

  693. It's not

  694. external,

  695. someone

  696. outside of

  697. us,

  698. or something

  699. happening to

  700. us.

  701. Our greatest

  702. problem is

  703. our worship

  704. problem.

  705. He's come to

  706. put us at

  707. peace with

  708. God,

  709. right with

  710. God.

  711. He's come

  712. to bring the

  713. whole world

  714. right with

  715. God.

  716. peace with

  717. God,

  718. and we

  719. get a

  720. glimpse of

  721. how he

  722. brings peace

  723. with God.

  724. He doesn't

  725. help the

  726. worshipers coming

  727. to the

  728. temple in

  729. offering

  730. sacrifices.

  731. He inserts

  732. himself as

  733. greater than

  734. the temple.

  735. That's how

  736. he's going

  737. to bring

  738. peace,

  739. not by

  740. helping you

  741. worship at

  742. the temple,

  743. but he

  744. inserts

  745. himself.

  746. Now,

  747. where am I

  748. getting this

  749. from?

  750. You don't

  751. have the

  752. right to

  753. walk into

  754. my house

  755. and move

  756. my lounges

  757. around if

  758. you think

  759. I've got it

  760. in the wrong

  761. spot.

  762. You don't

  763. have the

  764. right.

  765. If you

  766. think my

  767. cling wrap

  768. is in

  769. the wrong

  770. drawer,

  771. I don't

  772. care.

  773. It's my

  774. house.

  775. Or our

  776. house.

  777. Him

  778. going in

  779. there,

  780. do you

  781. see the

  782. claim he's

  783. making?

  784. The only

  785. person who

  786. has the

  787. right to

  788. walk into

  789. a house

  790. and rearrange

  791. stuff is

  792. its owner.

  793. He's

  794. inserting

  795. himself.

  796. The blind

  797. and the

  798. lame

  799. come to

  800. him.

  801. They don't

  802. go to

  803. the chief

  804. priest.

  805. Chief

  806. priest,

  807. intercede

  808. for us

  809. for God.

  810. No.

  811. They come

  812. to him.

  813. I watched

  814. this documentary

  815. biography,

  816. Notes on

  817. Blindness.

  818. It was on

  819. Netflix.

  820. I haven't

  821. checked it

  822. recently.

  823. This was a

  824. couple of

  825. years ago.

  826. This guy

  827. used to be

  828. able to

  829. fully see

  830. but his

  831. eyes

  832. degenerated

  833. quickly to

  834. the point

  835. of total

  836. blindness and

  837. Christmas

  838. Day was

  839. agony for

  840. him because

  841. he could

  842. hear his

  843. children

  844. opening in the

  845. presents but

  846. he couldn't

  847. see their

  848. smiles.

  849. eyes.

  850. He felt

  851. so cut

  852. off from

  853. his family.

  854. He couldn't

  855. see his

  856. newborn

  857. daughter's

  858. face.

  859. These

  860. guys or

  861. girls,

  862. whoever,

  863. these blind

  864. and lame

  865. coming would

  866. have felt so

  867. cut off

  868. from God

  869. and under

  870. curse,

  871. punished by

  872. him.

  873. this is a

  874. little word.

  875. If you're

  876. feeling

  877. unworthy,

  878. look,

  879. they come

  880. to him

  881. and he

  882. receives

  883. them,

  884. he heals

  885. them,

  886. he welcomes,

  887. he gives

  888. all the

  889. blessing of

  890. God to

  891. them,

  892. he restores

  893. them.

  894. I think

  895. the bodily

  896. restoration

  897. is just

  898. an image

  899. of the

  900. spiritual

  901. restoration,

  902. the whole

  903. restoration

  904. he brings.

  905. He's

  906. inserting

  907. himself.

  908. Don't get

  909. right with

  910. God

  911. through the

  912. temple,

  913. but through

  914. me.

  915. And these

  916. little

  917. children

  918. are

  919. praising

  920. him.

  921. They're

  922. not wise

  923. enough to

  924. probably know

  925. the significance

  926. of all that

  927. was happening

  928. that day,

  929. but they're

  930. these little

  931. dependent

  932. children without

  933. skepticism,

  934. without

  935. worrying what

  936. others think.

  937. They're just

  938. echoing the

  939. crowds in

  940. the street,

  941. unashamedly

  942. joyfully

  943. chanting

  944. in the

  945. temple.

  946. Save us,

  947. Hosanna,

  948. to the

  949. son of

  950. David.

  951. But the

  952. first,

  953. those thinking

  954. they are

  955. strong,

  956. those thinking

  957. they have

  958. something to

  959. offer God,

  960. that God

  961. needs them

  962. somehow,

  963. the so-called

  964. expert,

  965. the irony is

  966. they see

  967. the wonderful

  968. things he's

  969. doing,

  970. but they

  971. remain willfully

  972. blind and

  973. they're offended

  974. by him,

  975. they're angry,

  976. they're

  977. questioned.

  978. Don't you

  979. hear what

  980. these little

  981. children are

  982. saying?

  983. I think

  984. it's,

  985. everyone in

  986. the streets

  987. yelling it,

  988. I think,

  989. I suspect

  990. the problem

  991. is they're

  992. in the

  993. temple,

  994. they're in

  995. the temple

  996. and they're

  997. praising you.

  998. You know

  999. when you ask

  1000. a question,

  1001. like if a

  1002. parent in

  1003. the room

  1004. today is

  1005. like,

  1006. don't you

  1007. know we're

  1008. in church?

  1009. That's an

  1010. instruction.

  1011. That's not a

  1012. question,

  1013. it's really

  1014. going,

  1015. Jesus,

  1016. do you

  1017. hear what

  1018. they're

  1019. saying?

  1020. You

  1021. better do

  1022. something about

  1023. this.

  1024. They are

  1025. praising you

  1026. here in

  1027. this place

  1028. when they

  1029. should be

  1030. praising God.

  1031. If you

  1032. keep accepting

  1033. this here,

  1034. you are

  1035. really

  1036. blaspheming.

  1037. You

  1038. better do

  1039. something about

  1040. this,

  1041. Jesus.

  1042. And he

  1043. could not

  1044. have poured

  1045. more fuel

  1046. on the

  1047. fire at

  1048. this point.

  1049. I love

  1050. his response.

  1051. Do you

  1052. hear what

  1053. they're

  1054. saying?

  1055. Yes?

  1056. I thought

  1057. you were

  1058. experts.

  1059. Haven't

  1060. you read

  1061. Psalm 8?

  1062. Out of

  1063. the mouth

  1064. of infants

  1065. and nursing

  1066. babies you

  1067. have prepared

  1068. praise.

  1069. Now,

  1070. Psalm 8

  1071. is children

  1072. praising

  1073. Yahweh.

  1074. Yahweh.

  1075. they're

  1076. praising me

  1077. and they

  1078. should keep

  1079. praising me.

  1080. I'm not

  1081. only the

  1082. son of

  1083. David,

  1084. I'm the

  1085. son of

  1086. God.

  1087. He

  1088. inserts

  1089. himself.

  1090. Someone

  1091. greater than

  1092. the temple

  1093. is here.

  1094. The Lord,

  1095. as the

  1096. prophet

  1097. Malachi

  1098. said,

  1099. the Lord

  1100. whom you

  1101. seek will

  1102. suddenly

  1103. come to

  1104. his temple.

  1105. He's

  1106. pushing

  1107. them to

  1108. the point,

  1109. crown

  1110. me.

  1111. Crown

  1112. me.

  1113. Or

  1114. kill

  1115. me.

  1116. He's

  1117. humble.

  1118. Yes,

  1119. he is so

  1120. humble.

  1121. But he's

  1122. come to

  1123. fix our

  1124. worship

  1125. problem.

  1126. I think

  1127. the implication

  1128. of this is

  1129. there's no

  1130. nook or

  1131. cranny of

  1132. your life

  1133. where he

  1134. won't stop

  1135. inserting

  1136. himself into

  1137. my life

  1138. and your

  1139. life.

  1140. There is

  1141. not a

  1142. nook or

  1143. cranny.

  1144. There's

  1145. nothing.

  1146. Your

  1147. spouse,

  1148. your

  1149. children,

  1150. your

  1151. dreams and

  1152. aspirations,

  1153. he is

  1154. inserting

  1155. himself

  1156. saying,

  1157. crown

  1158. me.

  1159. He's

  1160. come to

  1161. fix our

  1162. worship

  1163. problem.

  1164. There's

  1165. no one

  1166. like him.

  1167. He's

  1168. so

  1169. humble

  1170. and gentle

  1171. and lowly

  1172. that

  1173. children

  1174. are drawn

  1175. to him,

  1176. prostitutes

  1177. are drawn

  1178. to him,

  1179. outcasts,

  1180. foreigners

  1181. are drawn

  1182. to him,

  1183. those

  1184. feeling

  1185. utterly

  1186. unworthy

  1187. are drawn

  1188. to him.

  1189. and

  1190. received.

  1191. There's

  1192. no one

  1193. like him

  1194. and yet

  1195. he

  1196. inserts

  1197. himself,

  1198. crown

  1199. me.

  1200. I think

  1201. this

  1202. passage is

  1203. pushing

  1204. us to

  1205. the same

  1206. point that

  1207. he pushed

  1208. the religious

  1209. leaders

  1210. and the

  1211. crowd on

  1212. that day,

  1213. crown

  1214. me.

  1215. I will

  1216. not just

  1217. be

  1218. liked.

  1219. I will

  1220. not be

  1221. your

  1222. personal

  1223. assistant.

  1224. All

  1225. your

  1226. worship

  1227. should

  1228. be

  1229. directed

  1230. at

  1231. me.

  1232. There's

  1233. a good

  1234. quote by

  1235. Reynolds Price

  1236. that captures

  1237. the

  1238. offence

  1239. of the

  1240. Gospels.

  1241. He says,

  1242. if 2,000

  1243. years of

  1244. pious

  1245. handling

  1246. handling of

  1247. this

  1248. gospel,

  1249. if 2,000

  1250. years of

  1251. this pious

  1252. handling had

  1253. not dimmed

  1254. our understanding

  1255. of this

  1256. story's

  1257. demand,

  1258. his gospel

  1259. would still

  1260. be seen as

  1261. the burning

  1262. outrage it

  1263. really continues

  1264. to be.

  1265. It is

  1266. either a

  1267. work of

  1268. madness or

  1269. a blinding

  1270. revelation.

  1271. The acts

  1272. it portrays,

  1273. the claims

  1274. it advances

  1275. from the

  1276. very first

  1277. paragraph,

  1278. demand that

  1279. we make a

  1280. hard choice.

  1281. If we

  1282. take the

  1283. gospel

  1284. writer

  1285. seriously,

  1286. we must

  1287. finally ask

  1288. the question

  1289. he thrusts

  1290. so

  1291. fragrantly

  1292. towards us.

  1293. Does he

  1294. bring us

  1295. a life

  1296. transforming

  1297. truth?

  1298. Or is

  1299. this one

  1300. gifted

  1301. lunatic's

  1302. tale of

  1303. another

  1304. lunatic

  1305. wilder

  1306. than he?

  1307. He's

  1308. saying,

  1309. crown me.

  1310. many

  1311. question why

  1312. God doesn't

  1313. end all

  1314. evil.

  1315. Why

  1316. doesn't he

  1317. end sickness?

  1318. Why

  1319. doesn't he

  1320. end war?

  1321. Why

  1322. doesn't he

  1323. end the

  1324. oppression of

  1325. the vulnerable,

  1326. all the

  1327. injustice?

  1328. Why doesn't

  1329. he end all

  1330. that?

  1331. And he

  1332. promises he

  1333. will.

  1334. A day is

  1335. coming where

  1336. he will be

  1337. declared a

  1338. second time

  1339. and he

  1340. will be

  1341. riding a

  1342. horse on

  1343. that day

  1344. and he

  1345. will end

  1346. all evil.

  1347. But today

  1348. he's

  1349. ridden on

  1350. a donkey

  1351. because he's

  1352. going to

  1353. the cross

  1354. to die

  1355. in our

  1356. place so

  1357. that when

  1358. he ends

  1359. all evil

  1360. he doesn't

  1361. have to

  1362. end you

  1363. and me.

  1364. Don't

  1365. waste this

  1366. brief,

  1367. brief moment

  1368. of his

  1369. humiliation.

  1370. confession.

  1371. Come and

  1372. find rest

  1373. for your

  1374. souls.

  1375. Feel the

  1376. confrontation

  1377. of this

  1378. passage.

  1379. He's

  1380. saying

  1381. crown

  1382. me.

  1383. Give

  1384. yourself

  1385. totally

  1386. to me.

  1387. I am

  1388. gentle

  1389. and lowly

  1390. in heart

  1391. and you'll

  1392. find rest

  1393. for your

  1394. souls.

  1395. Crown

  1396. me.

  1397. I think

  1398. the other

  1399. thing we

  1400. should take

  1401. away from

  1402. this passage

  1403. is this

  1404. king continues

  1405. to conquer

  1406. through weakness.

  1407. things.

  1408. I keep

  1409. trying to

  1410. manage my

  1411. life.

  1412. I keep

  1413. trying to

  1414. be in

  1415. control and

  1416. make better

  1417. plans and

  1418. get ahead and

  1419. boast in my

  1420. abilities and

  1421. my accomplishments.

  1422. I keep going

  1423. back to that

  1424. way of

  1425. thinking.

  1426. I think

  1427. there's an

  1428. imitation of

  1429. the Christian

  1430. life that

  1431. says just

  1432. just be

  1433. self-controlled

  1434. be generous

  1435. be courageous

  1436. be kind.

  1437. This

  1438. passage

  1439. that's not

  1440. far enough.

  1441. It's not

  1442. far enough

  1443. to the

  1444. kind of

  1445. life that

  1446. he's calling

  1447. us to.

  1448. We've got to

  1449. follow this

  1450. donkey

  1451. riding king

  1452. who conquers

  1453. through

  1454. humiliation.

  1455. I believe

  1456. he's calling

  1457. us to

  1458. serve others

  1459. by sharing

  1460. in his

  1461. weakness,

  1462. in his

  1463. humiliation.

  1464. Like Paul

  1465. says in

  1466. 2 Corinthians

  1467. 4,

  1468. we have

  1469. this treasure

  1470. in jars

  1471. of clay

  1472. to show

  1473. that the

  1474. surpassing

  1475. power belongs

  1476. to God

  1477. and not

  1478. to us.

  1479. So I

  1480. wonder what

  1481. you're facing

  1482. in life

  1483. at the

  1484. moment.

  1485. What would

  1486. it look

  1487. like for

  1488. you not

  1489. to try

  1490. and conquer

  1491. that through

  1492. managing it,

  1493. being strong?

  1494. What would

  1495. it look like

  1496. to follow

  1497. this donkey

  1498. king and

  1499. lay down

  1500. your life

  1501. to show

  1502. that your

  1503. life is

  1504. resting in

  1505. him and

  1506. you want

  1507. others to

  1508. find the

  1509. peace that

  1510. you've

  1511. found in

  1512. him?

  1513. What would

  1514. it look

  1515. like to

  1516. follow his

  1517. example?

  1518. I take

  1519. great confidence

  1520. that he loves

  1521. to use

  1522. weakness.

  1523. Our God,

  1524. our donkey

  1525. riding king

  1526. loves to

  1527. conquer

  1528. through

  1529. weakness.

  1530. That is

  1531. really good

  1532. news because

  1533. he can use

  1534. someone like

  1535. me.

  1536. Well,

  1537. let's crown

  1538. him in our

  1539. hearts and

  1540. let's follow

  1541. him.

  1542. not in

  1543. strength but

  1544. in

  1545. humiliation.

  1546. Will you

  1547. pray with me?

  1548. Let's pray.

  1549. Oh,

  1550. Lord,

  1551. thank you

  1552. that you

  1553. don't win

  1554. our hearts

  1555. through threat

  1556. and fear

  1557. but you

  1558. win us

  1559. over by

  1560. serving us.

  1561. Lord, you

  1562. are so

  1563. humble that

  1564. you would

  1565. lower

  1566. yourself

  1567. to the

  1568. very last.

  1569. Forgive us

  1570. for

  1571. trying to

  1572. make

  1573. ourselves

  1574. great as

  1575. the world

  1576. counts

  1577. greatness.

  1578. Forgive us

  1579. for that

  1580. and help

  1581. us worship

  1582. you like

  1583. those little

  1584. children

  1585. unashamed

  1586. in the

  1587. temple

  1588. just

  1589. praising

  1590. you

  1591. because of

  1592. the peace

  1593. you bring.

  1594. Lord,

  1595. please use us

  1596. as a church

  1597. not through

  1598. us being

  1599. clever

  1600. or

  1601. strong

  1602. or

  1603. successful.

  1604. Use us

  1605. through our

  1606. weakness.

  1607. Lord, it's

  1608. a dangerous

  1609. prayer because

  1610. I just want

  1611. a comfortable

  1612. life but

  1613. use our

  1614. pain

  1615. and

  1616. our loss

  1617. to shine

  1618. the peace

  1619. that you've

  1620. given us

  1621. in Jesus.

  1622. Please use

  1623. us as a

  1624. church

  1625. to declare

  1626. the peace

  1627. that you've

  1628. brought.

  1629. I pray this

  1630. in Jesus'

  1631. name.

  1632. Amen.
