  1. Jesus is in the temple teaching.

  2. Matthew 22, 15 through to the end of the chapter.

  3. Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his talk.

  4. And they sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians saying,

  5. Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully.

  6. And you do not care about anyone's opinion.

  7. For you are not swayed by appearances.

  8. Tell us then what you think.

  9. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

  10. But Jesus, aware of their malice, said,

  11. Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?

  12. Show me the coin for the tax.

  13. And they brought him a denarius.

  14. And Jesus said to them,

  15. Whose likeness and inscription is this?

  16. They said, Caesar's.

  17. Then he said to them,

  18. Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,

  19. and to God the things that are God's.

  20. When they heard it, they marveled,

  21. and they left him and went away.

  22. The same day, Sadducees came to him,

  23. who say that there is no resurrection.

  24. And they asked him a question, saying,

  25. Teacher, Moses said,

  26. If a man dies having no children,

  27. his brother must marry the widow

  28. and raise up children for his brother.

  29. Now there were seven brothers among us.

  30. The first married and died,

  31. and having no children,

  32. left his wife to his brother.

  33. So too the second and the third down to the seventh.

  34. After them all the woman died.

  35. In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven,

  36. whose wife will she be?

  37. For they all had her.

  38. But Jesus answered them,

  39. You are wrong,

  40. because you know neither the scriptures

  41. nor the power of God.

  42. For in the resurrection,

  43. they neither marry nor are given in marriage,

  44. but are like angels in heaven.

  45. And as for the resurrection of the dead,

  46. have you not read what is said to you by God?

  47. I am the God of Abraham,

  48. and the God of Isaac,

  49. and the God of Jacob.

  50. He is not God of the dead,

  51. but of the living.

  52. And when the crowds heard it,

  53. they were astonished at his teaching.

  54. But when the Pharisees heard

  55. that he had silenced the Sadducees,

  56. they gathered together.

  57. And one of them, a lawyer,

  58. asked him a question to test him.

  59. Teacher, which is the great commandment,

  60. in the law?

  61. And he said to him,

  62. You shall love the Lord your God

  63. with all your heart,

  64. and with all your soul,

  65. and with all your mind.

  66. This is the great and first commandment.

  67. And a second is like it.

  68. You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

  69. On these two commandments

  70. depends all the law and the prophets.

  71. Now while the Pharisees were gathered together,

  72. Jesus asked them a question.

  73. saying,

  74. What do you think about the Christ?

  75. Whose son is he?

  76. They said to him,

  77. The son of David.

  78. He said to them,

  79. How is it then that David,

  80. in the spirit,

  81. calls him Lord?

  82. Saying,

  83. The Lord said to my Lord,

  84. Sit at my right hand

  85. until I put your enemies under your feet.

  86. If then David calls him Lord,

  87. how is he his son?

  88. And no one was able to answer him a word,

  89. nor from that day did anyone dare

  90. to ask him any more questions.

  91. Good morning,

  92. dear church.

  93. Welcome again to anyone visiting.

  94. My name's Sam,

  95. and we'll be spending some time

  96. thinking about God's word

  97. for the next half an hour or so.

  98. And also welcome to anyone

  99. who's returning after time away,

  100. Jacob and Annabelle

  101. and David and Alison.

  102. Welcome back.

  103. How about we pray now

  104. and ask God for help.

  105. Psalm 27.

  106. The Lord is my light and salvation.

  107. The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

  108. Our Father,

  109. we ask this morning

  110. that we would not just come away

  111. with more knowledge,

  112. but come away having met your son

  113. in these pages.

  114. Now that's what we need

  115. and that's what we ask in his name.

  116. Amen.

  117. A teacher of a Grace Kids class

  118. asked their young kids,

  119. what's brown furry

  120. with a bushy tail

  121. that makes good socks?

  122. A child raises their hand and says,

  123. I think the answer you want is Jesus.

  124. But it sounds like a possum to me.

  125. We half laugh and roll our eyes

  126. because often it's the right answer.

  127. The kids may not understand why,

  128. but they picked up

  129. that if you say Jesus,

  130. you're really wrong.

  131. But as we get older

  132. and turn into primary school kids,

  133. teenagers,

  134. adults,

  135. do we get past this answer?

  136. Does this answer become too basic,

  137. too simplistic,

  138. too naive to deal with

  139. all of our grown-up needs?

  140. Our needs.

  141. Most of us this morning

  142. come with questions

  143. we want answered,

  144. our problems and needs

  145. we'd like solved,

  146. niggles that are defining

  147. and disturbing us.

  148. It might be work situations,

  149. uncertain work,

  150. not enough,

  151. too much,

  152. difficult relationships,

  153. marital problems,

  154. problems,

  155. whether to get married,

  156. when to get married,

  157. raising kids,

  158. feeling stagnant

  159. and wanting to grow

  160. as a Christian.

  161. All good questions.

  162. And taking a guess,

  163. most of us think

  164. that answers

  165. to lots of these questions

  166. can be found

  167. in the Bible,

  168. in the book

  169. we're reading this morning.

  170. So what questions

  171. will we ask

  172. of this book?

  173. And is it possible

  174. that we could miss

  175. big,

  176. life-giving answers

  177. by starting

  178. with lesser questions?

  179. The most surprising thing

  180. I've found

  181. in thinking about

  182. this passage

  183. for the last few weeks

  184. is the bad guys

  185. get their answers

  186. from the same place

  187. we do.

  188. So this morning

  189. the question is

  190. not where we

  191. get our answers from,

  192. that's a legit one,

  193. but what question

  194. to ask?

  195. The bad guys

  196. were students

  197. of scripture

  198. like us

  199. this morning

  200. but not asking

  201. the best question.

  202. They passed up

  203. the invitation

  204. to the feast,

  205. failed,

  206. even refused,

  207. remained silent,

  208. to ask the question

  209. that would bring life.

  210. What should we ask

  211. of this book?

  212. Up to the setting

  213. in your bulletin,

  214. verse 15,

  215. have your Bibles open.

  216. It's the Tuesday

  217. before Good Friday

  218. in the temple courts

  219. of Jerusalem.

  220. Jesus has just spoken

  221. three parables

  222. of the Jewish leaders.

  223. in the first,

  224. they are the son

  225. who says one thing

  226. and does another.

  227. In the second,

  228. tenants of a vineyard

  229. who kill the owner's

  230. servants

  231. and eventually

  232. the owner's son.

  233. In the third,

  234. those in the first

  235. round of invites,

  236. the privileged,

  237. but who ignore

  238. or kill the messenger.

  239. And so verse 15

  240. reads,

  241. Then the Pharisees

  242. went and plotted

  243. how to entangle him

  244. in his words.

  245. The set of three questions

  246. that follows

  247. is not just

  248. what happens next,

  249. it is what the Jewish

  250. leaders do

  251. in response,

  252. which is to trap

  253. Jesus

  254. or attempt

  255. to trap Jesus

  256. in his words.

  257. Thinking back

  258. a few years ago

  259. to the 2022

  260. federal election,

  261. Scott Morrison

  262. was asked

  263. if he knew

  264. the price of bread

  265. and a rat test,

  266. I think.

  267. Not how to grow

  268. the economy

  269. or how to ensure

  270. the country is defended,

  271. but the price

  272. of a loaf of bread.

  273. And the question

  274. wasn't neutral,

  275. was it?

  276. It didn't come

  277. from an open-minded

  278. journalist

  279. humbly seeking

  280. the best leader.

  281. They'd already decided.

  282. So the question

  283. was a trap,

  284. a gotcha.

  285. Gotcha questions

  286. miss the point

  287. though,

  288. don't they?

  289. These three

  290. gotcha questions

  291. from Jewish teachers

  292. missed something too.

  293. What's missed

  294. is the question

  295. Jesus asks

  296. at the very end.

  297. So what should we

  298. ask of this book?

  299. Have you ever been

  300. in the hot seat

  301. recently

  302. facing a loaded question?

  303. Can you stay cool

  304. and treat the person

  305. with dignity

  306. and still

  307. get your point across?

  308. This week

  309. we've been

  310. reminded

  311. sadly

  312. how the world

  313. reacts to disagreement

  314. on charged topics

  315. and even

  316. capital T truth.

  317. Well,

  318. unlike us

  319. who flounder

  320. and the world

  321. that tears itself apart,

  322. Jesus' answers

  323. show perfect command,

  324. direct

  325. but never losing

  326. his cool

  327. sharper than glass

  328. but not abrasive,

  329. wisdom from

  330. outside this world,

  331. in his answers

  332. giving much more

  333. than is deserved

  334. and never arguing

  335. for the sake of a win

  336. or his reputation

  337. before others.

  338. His answers

  339. hit at the question

  340. not asked,

  341. his identity,

  342. who he is.

  343. so for us

  344. this morning

  345. I hope

  346. we simply

  347. can meet him

  348. in these pages

  349. and then you can decide

  350. what you think of him.

  351. Do you trust him?

  352. Do you dare

  353. to follow him?

  354. And for those

  355. who know him already,

  356. can we trust him

  357. and live for him

  358. into another week?

  359. So verse 16,

  360. getting into the

  361. passage now,

  362. the first

  363. gotcha attempt.

  364. So verse 16,

  365. the Pharisees

  366. team up

  367. with the Herodians,

  368. Jewish supporters

  369. of Herod,

  370. usually not

  371. the best friends

  372. and the Pharisees

  373. begin by sending

  374. in their disciple

  375. to do their

  376. dirty work.

  377. Skipping ahead

  378. to verse 17,

  379. the gotcha question,

  380. it reads,

  381. is it lawful

  382. to pay taxes

  383. to Caesar?

  384. But at the time

  385. in Judea,

  386. every person,

  387. Jew included,

  388. paid a tax

  389. to Caesar.

  390. Paying tax

  391. to a foreign ruler

  392. in their own

  393. backyard

  394. was a sore point.

  395. Was it lawful

  396. meant

  397. what do the

  398. scriptures say?

  399. What does God

  400. expect?

  401. Can we be

  402. loyal servants

  403. to God

  404. and pay taxes?

  405. In many ways,

  406. and in other

  407. circumstances,

  408. it was a genuine

  409. dilemma

  410. for the Jew.

  411. Yet,

  412. beneath the surface

  413. was a trap

  414. designed to expose

  415. Jesus as either

  416. a traitor

  417. or a rebel.

  418. Verse 18

  419. shows their intent

  420. was malicious,

  421. deadly.

  422. Anyway,

  423. Jesus evades

  424. the trap

  425. and answers

  426. the dilemma.

  427. In verse 18,

  428. Jesus says,

  429. you hypocrites,

  430. why put me

  431. to the test?

  432. Show me the

  433. coin for the

  434. tax.

  435. And just like

  436. that,

  437. they brought him

  438. a denarius.

  439. It seems

  440. finding a

  441. denarius

  442. in the temple

  443. is easy.

  444. Remember,

  445. too,

  446. the day before,

  447. Jesus has

  448. already found

  449. the temple

  450. overrun

  451. with Marcus.

  452. The question

  453. has a

  454. veneer

  455. of integrity,

  456. but it

  457. seems

  458. behind the

  459. scenes,

  460. the Jewish

  461. leaders have

  462. no problem

  463. with the

  464. temple using

  465. and even

  466. benefiting

  467. from Roman

  468. coin.

  469. So,

  470. Jesus'

  471. answer in

  472. verse 21,

  473. render to

  474. Caesar the

  475. things that are

  476. Caesar's and

  477. to God the

  478. things that are

  479. God's.

  480. Meaning,

  481. if you use

  482. and benefit

  483. from Rome's

  484. currency,

  485. pay for it.

  486. We

  487. probably don't

  488. feel the full

  489. weight of this

  490. answer,

  491. and that's

  492. because we

  493. don't feel the

  494. split loyalty

  495. between God

  496. and government

  497. that was felt

  498. by our

  499. Jews.

  500. There are

  501. exceptions

  502. for us

  503. where governments

  504. play God,

  505. deciding,

  506. for example,

  507. when life

  508. begins and

  509. ends,

  510. but by and

  511. large,

  512. our

  513. experience

  514. is that

  515. government

  516. is not

  517. God.

  518. It's a

  519. servant of

  520. God.

  521. But this

  522. separation is

  523. a historical

  524. abnormality.

  525. The Jews

  526. had kings

  527. and a ruling

  528. class who

  529. were supposed

  530. to lead

  531. the people

  532. in religion.

  533. Rome had

  534. Caesars who

  535. called themselves

  536. gods.

  537. What we

  538. take as

  539. normal today

  540. isn't

  541. normal.

  542. An elder

  543. put me on

  544. to Jordan

  545. Peterson

  546. commenting

  547. on Jesus'

  548. answer,

  549. in which

  550. he says

  551. it's

  552. miraculous.

  553. Himself,

  554. not a

  555. believer in

  556. miracles,

  557. because he

  558. sees wisdom

  559. in Jesus'

  560. answer that's

  561. historically out

  562. of this world.

  563. Who is this

  564. person?

  565. under the

  566. surface,

  567. there's also

  568. a deeper

  569. biblical

  570. reason for

  571. Jesus'

  572. answer.

  573. Remember

  574. Genesis 12,

  575. God establishes

  576. a nation and

  577. later a kingdom

  578. from Abraham's

  579. descendants.

  580. The whole

  581. reason for this

  582. nation,

  583. though,

  584. was to give

  585. birth to the

  586. Christ.

  587. Christ.

  588. The Christ

  589. had come,

  590. and so there

  591. was no need

  592. to shore up

  593. Judea,

  594. to return to

  595. the days of

  596. David's kingdom.

  597. There's probably

  598. much more we

  599. could say about

  600. this question,

  601. but we'll move

  602. on to the

  603. second gotcha

  604. attempt from

  605. verse 23.

  606. Gotcha

  607. attempt 2.

  608. Verse 23,

  609. that same

  610. day.

  611. This time,

  612. it's the

  613. Sadducees'

  614. turn,

  615. who denied

  616. the resurrection.

  617. And to

  618. understand

  619. their question,

  620. we do need

  621. to take in

  622. verse 24.

  623. In the

  624. Mosaic law,

  625. there was a

  626. provision for

  627. when a man

  628. died,

  629. leaving no

  630. children.

  631. It was

  632. possible for

  633. the dead

  634. man's

  635. brother,

  636. presumably

  637. unmarried,

  638. to marry

  639. the widow,

  640. have kids,

  641. and carry on

  642. the family

  643. name.

  644. Strange to

  645. us, but I

  646. think it was

  647. sort of a

  648. kind provision

  649. in those

  650. days, given

  651. the importance

  652. of

  653. offspring.

  654. The gotcha

  655. question,

  656. though,

  657. verse 24

  658. to 28,

  659. let's read

  660. it.

  661. Teacher,

  662. Moses said,

  663. if a man

  664. dies having

  665. no children,

  666. his brother

  667. must marry

  668. the widow

  669. and raise

  670. up offspring

  671. for his

  672. brother.

  673. Now,

  674. there were

  675. seven brothers

  676. among us,

  677. the first

  678. married and

  679. died,

  680. and having

  681. no offspring,

  682. left his

  683. wife to

  684. his brother.

  685. father,

  686. so too

  687. the second

  688. and third

  689. down to

  690. the seventh.

  691. After them

  692. all, the

  693. woman died.

  694. In the

  695. resurrection,

  696. therefore,

  697. of the

  698. seven,

  699. whose wife

  700. shall she

  701. be?

  702. So which

  703. will it be,

  704. Jesus?

  705. Seven potential

  706. husbands in

  707. heaven,

  708. and all of

  709. them brothers?

  710. Or some

  711. other way to

  712. decide which

  713. one is the

  714. husband?

  715. man,

  716. or perhaps

  717. this dilemma

  718. shows that

  719. this

  720. resurrection,

  721. life after

  722. death thing

  723. isn't a

  724. thing at

  725. all.

  726. Which one,

  727. Jesus?

  728. Got you

  729. there.

  730. It's a

  731. highly improbable

  732. situation,

  733. isn't it?

  734. I think

  735. they're quite

  736. proud of the

  737. way they've

  738. structured their

  739. question.

  740. But it all

  741. shows the

  742. intent to

  743. trip Jesus

  744. up.

  745. And Jesus

  746. shows there

  747. are two

  748. problems.

  749. Verse 29,

  750. they don't

  751. know the

  752. scriptures,

  753. nor God's

  754. power.

  755. They don't

  756. know the

  757. power of

  758. God,

  759. because

  760. verse 30,

  761. in the

  762. resurrection,

  763. that is,

  764. in the new

  765. state of

  766. existence,

  767. a resurrection

  768. brings,

  769. is a

  770. complete

  771. upgrade.

  772. And in

  773. this upgrade,

  774. Jesus says

  775. there will

  776. be no

  777. office of

  778. births,

  779. deaths,

  780. or marriages.

  781. No

  782. marriage,

  783. because there

  784. will be no

  785. births,

  786. and no

  787. births,

  788. because there

  789. will be no

  790. death.

  791. The Sadducees

  792. don't appreciate

  793. the power of

  794. God.

  795. As an

  796. aside to

  797. the married

  798. among us,

  799. Jesus does

  800. not say

  801. relationship

  802. will end.

  803. Paul

  804. rejoices,

  805. the

  806. apostle Paul

  807. rejoices over

  808. the thought

  809. that he

  810. will stand

  811. shoulder to

  812. shoulder in

  813. heaven with

  814. those he

  815. has toiled

  816. over,

  817. spent countless

  818. hours pouring

  819. hours into

  820. in this life.

  821. Why not to a

  822. similar joy for

  823. spouses who have

  824. helped each

  825. other get

  826. there?

  827. The second

  828. problem in

  829. their question

  830. is they

  831. don't know

  832. the scriptures.

  833. Verse 32.

  834. Let's read it

  835. again.

  836. Verse 32.

  837. I am the

  838. God of

  839. Abraham and

  840. the God of

  841. Isaac and

  842. the God of

  843. Jacob.

  844. He is not

  845. the God of

  846. the dead,

  847. but of the

  848. living.

  849. I suspect

  850. without Jesus'

  851. interpretation,

  852. we may read

  853. this verse

  854. quite a few

  855. times and not

  856. reach the

  857. conclusion Jesus

  858. does.

  859. Jesus shows

  860. us,

  861. though,

  862. that Abraham,

  863. Isaac and

  864. Jacob's earthly

  865. life may have

  866. finished many

  867. years ago,

  868. but God's

  869. relationship with

  870. them holds

  871. good.

  872. I am,

  873. not I

  874. was.

  875. I am the

  876. God of

  877. Abraham.

  878. One of the

  879. elders pointed

  880. out to me

  881. another

  882. significant word

  883. and that's

  884. of.

  885. He is the

  886. God of

  887. Abraham.

  888. Abraham

  889. still is

  890. God's,

  891. even though

  892. his earthly

  893. life is

  894. finished.

  895. He belongs

  896. to God.

  897. And this

  898. God plays

  899. for keeps.

  900. The

  901. relationship

  902. we have

  903. with God

  904. will last

  905. as long

  906. as he

  907. does.

  908. Death

  909. is no

  910. full stop.

  911. Such

  912. clarity

  913. in so

  914. few words.

  915. I think

  916. that's another

  917. surprising thing

  918. is that

  919. Jesus really

  920. uses very

  921. few words

  922. words to

  923. get his

  924. point across.

  925. So few

  926. words that

  927. we can

  928. only aspire

  929. to.

  930. And what

  931. about the

  932. grace and

  933. goodness of

  934. his answers,

  935. giving far

  936. more than

  937. these hostile

  938. questions

  939. deserve?

  940. God

  941. your attempt

  942. three.

  943. In

  944. verse

  945. 33,

  946. the

  947. crowd's

  948. astonished,

  949. and we

  950. learn in

  951. verse 34,

  952. Jesus'

  953. answer had

  954. silenced the

  955. Sadducees.

  956. So word

  957. gets back to

  958. the Pharisees,

  959. they gather

  960. and send

  961. in an

  962. expert in

  963. the law

  964. for one

  965. last

  966. go.

  967. Verse

  968. 36 reads,

  969. Teacher,

  970. which is

  971. the greatest

  972. commandment

  973. in the

  974. law?

  975. Perhaps

  976. the tests

  977. lay in

  978. choosing one

  979. commandment

  980. and downplaying

  981. others,

  982. leaving a

  983. soft spot

  984. exposed to

  985. attack.

  986. Jesus answers

  987. from verse

  988. 37,

  989. and he

  990. said to

  991. him,

  992. You shall

  993. love the

  994. Lord your

  995. God with

  996. all your

  997. heart and

  998. all your

  999. soul,

  1000. and with

  1001. all your

  1002. mind.

  1003. Isn't

  1004. that the

  1005. case for

  1006. us too?

  1007. Things are

  1008. rarely at

  1009. peace in

  1010. our own

  1011. relationships

  1012. if we have

  1013. not grasped

  1014. how worthy

  1015. God is of

  1016. our love and

  1017. devotion simply

  1018. for who he

  1019. is.

  1020. In a book,

  1021. Marriage Matters,

  1022. Beth and I

  1023. have dipped

  1024. into and

  1025. previously

  1026. with our

  1027. small group

  1028. many years

  1029. ago, the

  1030. author says

  1031. marriage

  1032. problems or

  1033. any relationship

  1034. problem is

  1035. firstly a

  1036. God problem.

  1037. He recalls a

  1038. time when he

  1039. lashed out at

  1040. his wife

  1041. verbally,

  1042. because,

  1043. this is the

  1044. author,

  1045. because she

  1046. was late to

  1047. pick up the

  1048. kids,

  1049. because she

  1050. was out with

  1051. friends and

  1052. so there was

  1053. some sort

  1054. of miscommunication.

  1055. This then

  1056. limited his

  1057. Bible study

  1058. prep time,

  1059. and so he

  1060. became angry,

  1061. and he

  1062. reflects on the

  1063. incident and

  1064. says,

  1065. what I was

  1066. really loving

  1067. in that time

  1068. was the

  1069. approval of

  1070. my Bible

  1071. study group.

  1072. And so he

  1073. concludes that

  1074. all our

  1075. problems are

  1076. worship problems

  1077. or what we

  1078. love,

  1079. the first and

  1080. the greatest.

  1081. And this

  1082. then leads

  1083. into a

  1084. two-for-one

  1085. deal,

  1086. not just

  1087. one commandment

  1088. but two.

  1089. Verse 39,

  1090. you shall

  1091. love your

  1092. neighbor as

  1093. yourself.

  1094. So taken

  1095. together,

  1096. without love

  1097. for God

  1098. and neighbor,

  1099. every other

  1100. act of

  1101. obedience is

  1102. not obedience.

  1103. verse 40

  1104. says,

  1105. on these

  1106. two commandments

  1107. depend all

  1108. the law

  1109. and the

  1110. prophets.

  1111. The answer

  1112. brings into

  1113. focus what's

  1114. lacking in

  1115. their own

  1116. observance of

  1117. the law and

  1118. in each of

  1119. us.

  1120. Who can

  1121. follow this

  1122. law?

  1123. Who has

  1124. clean hands

  1125. and a

  1126. pure

  1127. heart?

  1128. All the

  1129. mind,

  1130. all the

  1131. heart,

  1132. all the

  1133. soul.

  1134. Psalm 27,

  1135. not us

  1136. but the

  1137. Lord of

  1138. glory.

  1139. All their

  1140. study of

  1141. scripture,

  1142. the Pharisees

  1143. that is,

  1144. their time

  1145. and efforts

  1146. pouring over

  1147. the words

  1148. did not

  1149. yield this

  1150. love or

  1151. rightly

  1152. convict

  1153. them that

  1154. like us

  1155. they need

  1156. heart surgery.

  1157. the constant

  1158. reminder of

  1159. the Old

  1160. Testament was

  1161. circumcise your

  1162. hearts.

  1163. You need a

  1164. new one.

  1165. So the

  1166. solution for

  1167. the Pharisees

  1168. is the same

  1169. for us.

  1170. Come to

  1171. Jesus.

  1172. He gives

  1173. you his

  1174. perfect

  1175. obedience

  1176. and a

  1177. new heart

  1178. as a

  1179. gift.

  1180. The

  1181. question

  1182. Jesus

  1183. asks,

  1184. verse 41,

  1185. Now while

  1186. the Pharisees

  1187. were gathered

  1188. together,

  1189. Jesus asked

  1190. them a

  1191. question,

  1192. saying,

  1193. what do

  1194. you think

  1195. about the

  1196. Christ?

  1197. Whose

  1198. son is

  1199. he?

  1200. As

  1201. teachers of

  1202. scripture,

  1203. what should

  1204. have been

  1205. foremost in

  1206. their minds?

  1207. As

  1208. students of

  1209. scripture this

  1210. morning,

  1211. what should

  1212. be foremost

  1213. in our

  1214. minds?

  1215. Well,

  1216. Jesus has

  1217. to tell

  1218. them and

  1219. maybe he

  1220. has to

  1221. remind us

  1222. too this

  1223. morning.

  1224. Whose

  1225. son is

  1226. the

  1227. Christ?

  1228. Occasionally,

  1229. instead of

  1230. using the

  1231. word Christ,

  1232. I'm going

  1233. to use

  1234. the phrase

  1235. God's

  1236. forever

  1237. king.

  1238. Verse 42,

  1239. they answer,

  1240. the son

  1241. of David.

  1242. And 2

  1243. Samuel 7

  1244. does promise

  1245. that God's

  1246. forever king

  1247. would come

  1248. from David.

  1249. So their

  1250. answer is

  1251. correct.

  1252. But not

  1253. complete.

  1254. Because go

  1255. down to

  1256. verse 45,

  1257. it's the

  1258. last thing

  1259. Jesus says,

  1260. and Jesus

  1261. is still

  1262. pressing the

  1263. question.

  1264. Yes,

  1265. he's the

  1266. son of

  1267. David,

  1268. but he's

  1269. more than

  1270. that.

  1271. And Jesus

  1272. answers for

  1273. them by

  1274. going to

  1275. Psalm 110,

  1276. a psalm

  1277. written by

  1278. David himself

  1279. about God's

  1280. forever king.

  1281. And the

  1282. quotation

  1283. shows three

  1284. things about

  1285. the forever

  1286. king.

  1287. He's lord,

  1288. he sits,

  1289. and he's

  1290. one.

  1291. All three

  1292. suggest he's

  1293. greater than

  1294. just David's

  1295. human son.

  1296. With the

  1297. implication that

  1298. if David

  1299. recognised this,

  1300. then you

  1301. too,

  1302. you teachers

  1303. of the

  1304. law,

  1305. should recognise

  1306. this as

  1307. well.

  1308. The first

  1309. one,

  1310. he's lord.

  1311. His answer

  1312. starts with

  1313. a question

  1314. in verse

  1315. 43.

  1316. How is

  1317. it then

  1318. that David

  1319. in the

  1320. spirit

  1321. calls him

  1322. lord?

  1323. Dads

  1324. call their

  1325. sons by

  1326. all sorts

  1327. of nicknames,

  1328. buddy,

  1329. mate,

  1330. champ,

  1331. junior,

  1332. pup,

  1333. scoundrel,

  1334. mischief

  1335. maker,

  1336. oi,

  1337. you.

  1338. but lord?

  1339. Any

  1340. dads dare

  1341. to do

  1342. that

  1343. here?

  1344. Whose

  1345. son

  1346. is

  1347. David's

  1348. lord?

  1349. Well,

  1350. the word

  1351. lord is

  1352. most often

  1353. used of

  1354. god.

  1355. Here's

  1356. one example

  1357. from

  1358. psalm

  1359. 8.

  1360. O

  1361. yahweh,

  1362. our

  1363. lord,

  1364. how

  1365. majestic

  1366. is your

  1367. name in

  1368. all the

  1369. earth.

  1370. Yahweh,

  1371. God,

  1372. Lord,

  1373. all divine

  1374. names.

  1375. Let's

  1376. keep

  1377. reading

  1378. in verse

  1379. 44.

  1380. It's

  1381. about to

  1382. get

  1383. wonderfully

  1384. weird.

  1385. David

  1386. overhears

  1387. a conversation

  1388. in which

  1389. Yahweh,

  1390. that's the

  1391. first lord

  1392. mentioned,

  1393. speaks

  1394. to David's

  1395. lord.

  1396. The

  1397. lord,

  1398. Yahweh,

  1399. said to

  1400. my lord,

  1401. David's

  1402. lord.

  1403. Two

  1404. divine

  1405. persons

  1406. talking.

  1407. What does

  1408. Yahweh say

  1409. to David's

  1410. lord?

  1411. He

  1412. sits.

  1413. He

  1414. tells him

  1415. to sit.

  1416. That

  1417. probably

  1418. doesn't

  1419. strike you

  1420. as,

  1421. it probably

  1422. strikes you

  1423. as something

  1424. fairly

  1425. normal,

  1426. something

  1427. my wife

  1428. has told

  1429. me that

  1430. I'm

  1431. doing

  1432. too much

  1433. of at

  1434. the

  1435. moment.

  1436. But

  1437. take

  1438. note

  1439. of where

  1440. he's

  1441. sitting.

  1442. It

  1443. makes

  1444. all the

  1445. difference.

  1446. Sit

  1447. at my

  1448. right

  1449. hand.

  1450. Sitting

  1451. next to

  1452. Yahweh

  1453. in heaven.

  1454. Who does

  1455. that?

  1456. For a

  1457. comparison,

  1458. remember how

  1459. careful the

  1460. high priest

  1461. had to be

  1462. going into

  1463. the temple

  1464. once per

  1465. year,

  1466. one for

  1467. many.

  1468. He would

  1469. symbolically

  1470. take the

  1471. people

  1472. into God's

  1473. presence

  1474. at high

  1475. risk to

  1476. himself,

  1477. but only

  1478. in a

  1479. limited way

  1480. due to

  1481. their sin.

  1482. In the

  1483. real deal,

  1484. not just

  1485. the earthly

  1486. copy,

  1487. in heaven,

  1488. not just

  1489. where God's

  1490. presence was

  1491. modelled,

  1492. but where

  1493. God

  1494. dwelled,

  1495. verse 44,

  1496. this was a

  1497. hold-on-to-your-seat

  1498. moment for me,

  1499. Yahweh says

  1500. to David's

  1501. Lord,

  1502. sit

  1503. down.

  1504. And I'll

  1505. add from

  1506. Hebrews,

  1507. stay

  1508. forever.

  1509. Not just

  1510. David's son

  1511. or descendant,

  1512. is he?

  1513. The last

  1514. little point

  1515. is he's

  1516. won.

  1517. King David

  1518. provided rest

  1519. from Israel's

  1520. enemies for

  1521. a time.

  1522. Even then,

  1523. as great as

  1524. it was,

  1525. it wasn't

  1526. the real,

  1527. more ancient

  1528. enemy,

  1529. sin and

  1530. death.

  1531. King David's

  1532. Lord has

  1533. won,

  1534. and even

  1535. sin and

  1536. death will

  1537. be his

  1538. foot cushion

  1539. or footstool.

  1540. All three,

  1541. taken together,

  1542. show the

  1543. great King

  1544. David looked

  1545. forward to

  1546. God's

  1547. forever king,

  1548. who turned

  1549. out to be

  1550. God the

  1551. Son.

  1552. And Jesus

  1553. shows the

  1554. Pharisees

  1555. should follow

  1556. David's

  1557. lead.

  1558. In verse

  1559. 46,

  1560. the last

  1561. verse,

  1562. they dare

  1563. not ask

  1564. more

  1565. questions.

  1566. Silence,

  1567. as Emma

  1568. pointed out

  1569. in the

  1570. kids'

  1571. talk.

  1572. And if

  1573. you're new

  1574. to all this

  1575. this morning,

  1576. you're visiting,

  1577. you might not

  1578. know what

  1579. questions to

  1580. ask or even

  1581. where to

  1582. start.

  1583. don't stop

  1584. asking

  1585. questions.

  1586. We've seen

  1587. how patient

  1588. and gracious

  1589. Jesus is in

  1590. his answers.

  1591. The question

  1592. though is

  1593. sort of left

  1594. hanging.

  1595. Jesus'

  1596. last words

  1597. to them

  1598. is a

  1599. question.

  1600. Whose

  1601. son?

  1602. We do

  1603. have a

  1604. fairly good

  1605. idea of

  1606. what it is

  1607. Jesus is

  1608. alluding

  1609. to,

  1610. but we

  1611. don't have

  1612. to go

  1613. too far

  1614. into

  1615. Matthew

  1616. to find

  1617. an

  1618. explicit

  1619. answer.

  1620. Flick

  1621. back to

  1622. Matthew 3,

  1623. Matthew

    Matthew 3:16

  1624. chapter 3,

  1625. verse 16

  1626. and 17.

  1627. And when

  1628. Jesus was

  1629. baptized,

  1630. immediately

  1631. he went

  1632. up from

  1633. the water

  1634. and behold,

  1635. the heavens

  1636. were opened

  1637. to him

  1638. and he

  1639. saw the

  1640. spirit of

  1641. God

  1642. descending

  1643. like a

  1644. dove

  1645. and coming

  1646. to rest

  1647. on him.

  1648. And behold,

  1649. a voice

  1650. from heaven

  1651. said,

  1652. this is

  1653. my beloved

  1654. son with

  1655. whom I'm

  1656. well pleased.

  1657. Whose

  1658. son is

  1659. the Christ?

  1660. He's the

  1661. divine

  1662. son who

  1663. personally

  1664. joined

  1665. himself to

  1666. human flesh,

  1667. God and

  1668. man in

  1669. the same

  1670. person.

  1671. The same

  1672. person through

  1673. whom the

  1674. universe was

  1675. made is

  1676. the one

  1677. giving the

  1678. answers and

  1679. asking the

  1680. question we

  1681. too should

  1682. ask.

  1683. God

  1684. let's

  1685. pause for

  1686. a bit

  1687. before we

  1688. go into

  1689. some more

  1690. application.

  1691. What's

  1692. been your

  1693. take on

  1694. the Pharisees?

  1695. We've

  1696. been looking

  1697. at the

  1698. Pharisees for

  1699. the last

  1700. few weeks

  1701. and Jesus'

  1702. interaction

  1703. with them.

  1704. In

  1705. stories,

  1706. it's good

  1707. to have a

  1708. villain,

  1709. isn't it?

  1710. Someone to

  1711. point the

  1712. finger,

  1713. someone to

  1714. create a

  1715. bit of

  1716. comfortable

  1717. distance

  1718. for us.

  1719. Matthew

  1720. 16,

  1721. 6,

  1722. Jesus says

  1723. to his

  1724. disciples,

  1725. beware of

  1726. the leaven

  1727. of the

  1728. Pharisees.

  1729. We're his

  1730. disciples too,

  1731. so I take it

  1732. on notice from

  1733. Jesus that

  1734. we should be

  1735. wary of the

  1736. leaven of

  1737. the Pharisees.

  1738. If not a

  1739. problem today,

  1740. then maybe in

  1741. the future.

  1742. Leaven or

  1743. yeast, as the

  1744. bread makers

  1745. among us

  1746. know, has a

  1747. transforming

  1748. effect, but

  1749. it happens

  1750. imperceptibly,

  1751. sometimes without

  1752. us realising,

  1753. hence Jesus'

  1754. warning.

  1755. Lots of

  1756. ways we can

  1757. be leavened,

  1758. but what have

  1759. we seen in

  1760. this passage?

  1761. Well, I

  1762. think in

  1763. each question

  1764. that is asked

  1765. by the

  1766. Pharisees,

  1767. and the

  1768. question Jesus

  1769. asks,

  1770. Scripture is

  1771. the starting

  1772. point.

  1773. The bad

  1774. guys, although

  1775. they made a

  1776. few additions

  1777. and omissions,

  1778. share with

  1779. us where we

  1780. get our

  1781. answers from.

  1782. So where

  1783. did things

  1784. go wrong?

  1785. Jesus in

  1786. John 5,

  1787. speaking of

  1788. the Pharisees,

  1789. says,

  1790. you search the

  1791. Scriptures because

  1792. you think that in

  1793. them you have

  1794. eternal life.

  1795. they were

  1796. teachers,

  1797. students,

  1798. scribes of the

  1799. Old Testament,

  1800. those who

  1801. Romans 2 took

  1802. pride in being

  1803. a guide to

  1804. the blind,

  1805. a light to

  1806. those in

  1807. darkness,

  1808. a teacher of

  1809. children,

  1810. but did not

  1811. teach themselves.

  1812. Grace kids

  1813. teachers,

  1814. ministry leaders,

  1815. small group

  1816. leaders,

  1817. people who

  1818. preach even.

  1819. John 5,

  1820. 39,

  1821. continues,

  1822. it is

  1823. they,

  1824. this book,

  1825. the Bible,

  1826. that bear

  1827. witness about

  1828. me,

  1829. yet you

  1830. refuse to

  1831. come to me

  1832. for life.

  1833. We can

  1834. get answers

  1835. from the

  1836. right place,

  1837. but not

  1838. go to

  1839. whom the

  1840. Scriptures

  1841. point.

  1842. Jesus,

  1843. the Son

  1844. of God,

  1845. this is

  1846. the last

  1847. heading in

  1848. your

  1849. outlines.

  1850. I'm

  1851. partway

  1852. through

  1853. reading a

  1854. book by

  1855. Dan Hames,

  1856. it's not a

  1857. household name,

  1858. and the

  1859. book is a

  1860. biography of a

  1861. 5th century

  1862. Christian,

  1863. Cyril of

  1864. Alexandria,

  1865. but in the

  1866. book,

  1867. Dan weaves

  1868. in his own

  1869. story into

  1870. the debates

  1871. of the

  1872. time.

  1873. Centered

  1874. on,

  1875. who is

  1876. Jesus,

  1877. and whose

  1878. son is

  1879. he?

  1880. The same

  1881. questions we've

  1882. been looking

  1883. at this

  1884. morning.

  1885. Was he

  1886. just a

  1887. man invisibly

  1888. assisted by

  1889. God,

  1890. so God

  1891. wouldn't have

  1892. to get his

  1893. hands dirty,

  1894. or God

  1895. himself joined

  1896. to human

  1897. flesh?

  1898. And Dan

  1899. relates his

  1900. coming of

  1901. age to

  1902. having this

  1903. question answered.

  1904. Growing

  1905. up, Dan

  1906. thought Jesus

  1907. was something

  1908. of what God

  1909. is like.

  1910. He

  1911. wondered if

  1912. there was a

  1913. different God

  1914. behind the

  1915. one he

  1916. saw in

  1917. Jesus.

  1918. In youth

  1919. group years,

  1920. he saw the

  1921. experience of

  1922. other youth

  1923. and thought

  1924. he was

  1925. missing

  1926. something,

  1927. some

  1928. ecstatic

  1929. experience

  1930. that he

  1931. didn't have.

  1932. At

  1933. university,

  1934. he told a

  1935. friend,

  1936. I believe

  1937. in God,

  1938. but I

  1939. don't know

  1940. how Jesus

  1941. fits in.

  1942. God

  1943. is

  1944. God,

  1945. he

  1946. did not

  1947. know

  1948. the truth

  1949. that

  1950. Matthew

  1951. in his

  1952. gospel

  1953. points

  1954. to,

  1955. the truth

  1956. Cyril

  1957. defended

  1958. is this,

  1959. the man

  1960. Jesus,

  1961. who we've

  1962. thought about

  1963. this morning,

  1964. is the

  1965. same person

  1966. as God

  1967. the Son.

  1968. And as I

  1969. close,

  1970. I'll finish

  1971. with a Dan

  1972. thought bubble

  1973. to take

  1974. away.

  1975. If Jesus

  1976. is God

  1977. the Son,

  1978. then what

  1979. we see

  1980. in Jesus

  1981. is what

  1982. God is

  1983. like.

  1984. Which

  1985. means

  1986. Jesus

  1987. is bigger

  1988. than we

  1989. think.

  1990. Fullness

  1991. of God

  1992. dwells

  1993. bodily,

  1994. Colossians

  1995. 2.9.

  1996. Wisdom

  1997. that

  1998. pierces,

  1999. using just

  2000. a few

  2001. words.

  2002. Words

  2003. that

  2004. heal,

  2005. bring

  2006. life,

  2007. and

  2008. forgive

  2009. sin.

  2010. Dan

  2011. says he's

  2012. even so

  2013. big,

  2014. he sets

  2015. the questions

  2016. we should

  2017. ask.

  2018. While

  2019. it's a

  2020. Sunday

  2021. school

  2022. answer,

  2023. it's not

  2024. the ABC.

  2025. He's

  2026. the Alpha

  2027. and Omega,

  2028. the first

  2029. and last,

  2030. the beginning

  2031. and end.

  2032. Are you

  2033. asking

  2034. the question

  2035. he set?

  2036. Dan's

  2037. thought

  2038. bubble

  2039. doesn't

  2040. stop

  2041. there.

  2042. He

  2043. says

  2044. that

  2045. he's

  2046. good.

  2047. He

  2048. gives

  2049. more

  2050. than

  2051. these

  2052. questions

  2053. deserve,

  2054. doesn't

  2055. he?

  2056. And

  2057. he

  2058. gives

  2059. us

  2060. more

  2061. than

  2062. we

  2063. deserve.

  2064. He's

  2065. good.

  2066. What

  2067. do you

  2068. think

  2069. about

  2070. him?

  2071. Do

  2072. you

  2073. trust

  2074. him?

  2075. Do you

  2076. dare

  2077. follow

  2078. him?

  2079. and

  2080. if

  2081. you

  2082. know

  2083. him,

  2084. will

  2085. you

  2086. follow

  2087. him

  2088. into

  2089. another

  2090. week?

  2091. Thanks,

  2092. Sam.

  2093. I'll

  2094. invite

  2095. the

  2096. musicians

  2097. up

  2098. again.

  2099. We'll

  2100. sing

  2101. another

  2102. song

  2103. now.

  2104. Yeah,

  2105. just

  2106. reflecting

  2107. on

  2108. something

  2109. Sam

  2110. said,

  2111. it's

  2112. easy

  2113. for

  2114. many

  2115. people

  2116. and

  2117. maybe

  2118. we

  2119. can

  2120. be

  2121. tempted

  2122. to

  2123. get

  2124. the

  2125. answers

  2126. from

  2127. the

  2128. right

  2129. place

  2130. but

  2131. not

  2132. go

  2133. to

  2134. the

  2135. person

  2136. who

  2137. it's

  2138. all

  2139. about.

  2140. So

  2141. I

  2142. pray

  2143. we

  2144. live

  2145. out

  2146. our

  2147. week

  2148. looking

  2149. to

  2150. Jesus

  2151. and

  2152. remembering

  2153. who

  2154. he

  2155. is

  2156. every

  2157. day.

  2158. Now

  2159. is

  2160. the

  2161. time

  2162. for

  2163. kids

  2164. that

  2165. are

  2166. older

  2167. in

  2168. year

  2169. three

  2170. to

  2171. six

  2172. to

  2173. go

  2174. out

  2175. to

  2176. the

  2177. older

  2178. Grace

  2179. Kids

  2180. Club.

  2181. Yeah,

  2182. and we'll

  2183. sing our

  2184. next song

  2185. together.

  2186. together.

  2187. Let's

  2188. together.

  2189. Let's

  2190. together.

  2191. Let's

  2192. together.

  2193. I

  2194. the

  2220. to

  2221. him

  2222. I

  2237. !

  2238. Lord,

  2239. now

  2240. indeed

  2241. I

  2242. find

  2243. Thy

  2244. power

  2245. and

  2246. thine

  2247. alone

  2248. can

  2258. of

  2259. stone

  2260. !

  2261. Jesus

  2262. made

  2263. it

  2264. all

  2265. all

  2266. to

  2267. him

  2268. I

  2269. owe

  2270. !

  2271. Sin

  2283. all

  2284. and

  2285. when

  2289. I

  2290. stand

  2291. in

  2292. him

  2293. complete

  2294. Jesus

  2295. died

  2296. my

  2297. soul

  2298. to

  2299. save

  2300. my

  2301. lips

  2302. shall

  2303. still

  2304. repeat

  2305. Jesus

  2306. made

  2307. it

  2308. all

  2309. all

  2310. to

  2311. him

  2312. my

  2313. own

  2314. sin

  2315. had

  2316. left

  2317. a

  2318. crimson

  2319. stain

  2320. it

  2321. washed

  2322. it

  2323. white

  2324. as

  2325. snow

  2326. O

  2327. praise

  2328. the

  2329. one

  2330. who

  2331. paid

  2332. my

  2333. debt

  2334. and

  2335. raised

  2336. his

  2337. life

  2338. up

  2339. from

  2340. the

  2341. debt

  2342. O

  2343. praise

  2344. the

  2345. who

  2346. paid

  2347. my

  2348. debt

  2349. and

  2350. raise

  2351. this

  2352. life

  2353. up

  2354. from

  2355. the

  2356. debt

2357. Oh, praise the one who paid my debt and raised his life up from the dead.

2358. Oh, praise the one who paid my debt and raised his life up from the dead.

2359. Jesus made it all, all to him I owe.

2360. Sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.

2361. He washed it white as snow.

2362. I've got the great blessing of praying for us all this morning.

2363. Can I encourage you as I'm praying, pray along.

2364. We sing in worship together and prayer is another form of worship to our God and an acknowledgement of him.

2365. So pray along with me.

2366. Heavenly Father, you are our great God.

2367. You're greater than all things.

2368. You are the creator of all things.

2369. Lord, we pray that your spirit might fill us with your love so that we might love you with our hearts, souls and minds.

  2370. And love our neighbours.

2371. Lord, let us turn to Jesus in all things.

2372. We bring before you today those that are doing your work out in the world.

2373. For Matt and Grace, Lincoln and Leah, Henry and Marie, we lift up their names to you.

2374. And we pray for strength, encouragement, safety and wisdom for them in their mission.

2375. We also lift up John and Kath Hollier as they serve on the mercy ships, Lord, over the next few months.

2376. That that will be a time of great blessing for those that they serve, but for them as well.

2377. Lord, more locally, we pray for the ministry opportunities we have here.

2378. We thank you for the recharge conference yesterday.

2379. We pray that that was a time in which the men here could be encouraged and filled with your spirit and strengthened to go out this week and into the future.

2380. And we pray for the women's retreat coming up, that that will be a time of great encouragement for our women.

2381. And for the Taste and See series, Lord, that that might be an opportunity for those that don't know you to come here.

2382. And we pray that you might be bringing those who don't know you along to that event and that you might be softening their hearts to hear your word.

2383. Lord, we thank you again for the wonderful gift of life as well.

2384. We pray for Lauren, for Sarah and Emma in their pregnancies.

2385. We pray for health and safety and protection over them over the next few months.

2386. And we also bring before you Sarah and Dylan.

2387. And we pray that we pray for wisdom as they prepare for marriage together, Lord.

2388. We pray that you'll fill their hearts with love so that this time and into their marriage it might be a time in which they're able to reflect the love that you showed us.

2389. And for those that are sick or caring for those that are sick, we lift them up for prayer in you as well, Lord.

2390. We pray for Jodie as she supports her parents.

2391. And for Elizabeth and Jane, Lord, as they're trying to provide support and prayer over sick family members.

2392. Lord, we lift up them to you and we pray for healing.

2393. And Lord, we also pray for those that can't be with us today, those that are sick at home, but also for those in nursing homes.

2394. For Arthur, for Diane, Jeff and Margaret.

2395. Lord, I pray that even though they're not with us and even though others are not with us, that they can be with us in spirit.

2396. And that you can be still encouraging and growing and strengthening their faith as well.

2397. And for Chris and Jane, Jess, sorry.

2398. Lord, we pray that as they prepare for their move up to Tauri, Lord, that you can be helping them to settle in.

2399. And that they'll find a place of worship up there where they can glorify and honour you and serve you in the community.

2400. Lord, we thank you for all things.

2401. We thank you that you are our great saviour and the perfecter and the finisher of our faith.

  2402. Amen.

  2403. Thanks, Lockie.

  2404. We'll do a few announcements now.

2405. So if you've got your bulletins there, grab them out.

  2406. We'll go through a few things.

2407. A little bit of wonderful family news.

2408. Firstly, yeah, congratulations to Sarah and Dylan on becoming engaged.

  2409. That's wonderful news, guys.

  2410. Put your hands up.

  2411. Where are you?

  2412. Can't see.

  2413. There they are.

2414. Yeah, they didn't want to be embarrassed, but I'm going to do it anyway.

  2415. Congratulations, guys.

  2416. And also, wonderful news.

2417. Dave and Emma are expecting a third bub.

  2418. So congratulations, guys.

2419. Okay, so that's some of the big news lately.

2420. As Lockie was praying about, we've got the upcoming Taste NC, which is a four-week series about exploring Christianity for blokes.

2421. It's not just another excuse to get together and eat meat.

2422. It's not just another excuse to get together and eat meat, although that will happen.

2423. But we do have some flyers.

2424. So beautiful flyers with a bit of purple on them.

2425. But yeah, feel free to grab some.

2426. If you're a bloke and you've got someone you want to invite along, you think they're interested in knowing more about Jesus, yeah, we'd love to have them along.

2427. And there's a couple of guys already coming, so yeah, why not have a few more?

2428. Yeah, it is starting Tuesday, the 23rd of September, and it's on at 6.30, starting at 6.30 across the four nights.

2429. There's quite a few things in the bulletin, including people who are sick, to keep in prayer, missionaries.

2430. But just to draw your attention to two other things, just remember John and Catherine are on the mercy ships, serving on one at the moment.

2431. So yeah, keep them in prayer as they committed to serving the Lord in that way.

2432. And also, may not be in here, but the Han family are going back to the US.

2433. So Kevin's here, but the kids in Katy are already on the plane, probably right now, Kevin.

2434. And Kevin's heading off next week, so keep them in prayer as they head over for a couple of weeks.

2435. I'm going to invite Emma up.

2436. She just wants to talk to a women's event coming up.

  2437. Yeah, so very exciting.

2438. We've got our women's retreat next weekend.

2439. We've got almost 30 ladies staying overnight and more than 10 coming for the day as well.

2440. So it's going to be a great day and great two days.

2441. And yeah, just a couple of reminders.

2442. So if you are able, we're going to have morning tea when we arrive, and we'd just love it if people could bring some slices or fruit or whatever to share.

2443. We'll be bringing some stuff as well.

2444. And also, you do need to bring your own bedding.

2445. So yeah, sheets or sleeping bag or whatever, as well as pillow, pillowcase.

  2446. Cool.

2447. We're looking forward to it.

  2448. See you next weekend.

2449. Okay, I'll invite the musos up.

2450. We're going to sing one final song in a moment.

2451. Sorry, Emma has been up and down all day today.

  2452. You've done amazing.

  2453. He hasn't had a rest.

2454. So a couple of things.

2455. We are going to have a morning tea after the service.

2456. There's lots of leftovers from the men's conference yesterday.

  2457. So get stuck in.

  2458. They've got to go.

2459. So if they don't go, I'm just going to have to get my kids onto it, and they'll clean it out.

2460. But there'll be a few others there too.

2461. So yeah, that'll be just over here, I think, in a moment.

2462. And I just want to finish with some words from Jude, and then we'll sing together.

2463. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and present you blameless

2464. before the presence of this glory with great joy,

2465. to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord,

2466. be glory, majesty, dominion and authority before all time and now and forever.

  2467. Amen.

2468. I cannot tell why he whom angels worship

2469. Should set his love upon the sons of men

2470. For why as shepherd he should seek the wanderers

2471. To bring them back they know not how or when

2472. But this I know that he was born of Mary

2473. When Bethlehem's manger was his only home

2474. And that he lived at Nazareth and Laban

2475. And so the Savior, Savior of the world is come

2476. I cannot tell how silently he suffered

2477. As with his speed he graced this place of tears

2478. For how his heart upon the cross was broken

2479. The crown of pain to three and thirty years

2480. But this I know he is a broken hearted

2481. And stays of sin and calms out looking feet

2482. And lifts the burden from the heavy laden

2483. For yet the Savior, Savior of the world is here

2484. I cannot tell how he will win the nations

2485. How he will claim his earthly heritage

2486. How satisfied the needs and aspirations

2487. Of east and west, of sin and of faith

2488. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory

2489. And he shall reap the harvest he has sown

2490. And some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor

2491. When he the Savior, Savior of the world is known

2492. I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship

2493. When at his bidding every storm is still

2494. For who can save how great the jubilation

2495. When all the hearts of men with love are filled

2496. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture

2497. And myriad, myriad human voices sing

2498. And earth to heaven, and earth to earth will answer

2499. At last the Savior, Savior of the world is King

  2500. Just one final thing

2501. Thank you for celebrating that we're expecting a baby

  2502. Sorry

  2503. It's a sad day as well

  2504. Because man

  2505. Sorry

2506. Man, this is anniversary of Nara today

2507. So yeah, we weep with you

2508. I think that song was fitting

2509. We cannot tell how he's going to make all things right

2510. And just knowing who he is as the Son of God

2511. Hopefully you feel some comfort and hope in that

2512. Well, why don't we continue fellowship

2513. In the good and the bad

2514. Whatever's going on in life over at Morning Tea

  2515. Thanks

  2516. Thanks

  2517. Thank you.

  2518. Thank you.

  2519. Thank you.

  2520. Thank you.

  2521. Thank you.

  2522. Thank you.

  2523. Thank you.

  2524. Thank you.

  2525. Thank you.

  2526. Thank you.

  2527. Thank you.
