  1. So we're going to be starting at verse 18, we're kind of skipping the genealogy which is Jesus' family tree.

  2. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  3. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  4. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

  5. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  6. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  7. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

  8. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  9. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  10. When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

  11. He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son, and he called his name Jesus.

  12. Good morning, everyone.

  13. It's good to be together, isn't it?

  14. Will you pray with me as we come to God's word?

  15. Let's pray.

  16. Heavenly Father, I pray that your spirit would take your word and press it deep into our hearts,

  17. that we might rejoice in the name of Jesus, afresh and all the more.

  18. And I pray this in Jesus' name.

  19. Amen.

  20. Well, Christmas corrects the lie about God that has wounded us all.

  21. There's a lie that has wounded all humanity, whether religious or not.

  22. And a Scottish pastor has a really great illustration to help us feel this lie.

  23. So imagine there's a father who takes his son to...

  24. I remember Toys R Us.

  25. Is that still around?

  26. It's gone.

  27. Okay.

  28. All right.

  29. Kmart.

  30. Insert your store.

  31. Around the shopping centre.

  32. A father takes his child, his son, around the shopping centre and just looks at all the toys,

  33. going, look at this.

  34. Isn't this awesome?

  35. Oh, yes.

  36. I see that, Daddy.

  37. I'd love to have one of those.

  38. Isn't this cool?

  39. Oh, wow.

  40. Yeah.

  41. That is cool.

  42. Wouldn't you love one of those?

  43. And this just goes on for an hour, maybe more.

  44. Maybe it's leading up to Christmas time.

  45. And then at the end of that hour, the father turns to his son and says,

  46. son, all these great things you've seen, you will have none of them.

  47. I want you to know I will not allow you to have a single one of these your entire life.

  48. Now let's go home.

  49. Now, any kids, this is just a story, okay?

  50. This didn't really happen.

  51. No one would ever be that cruel, would they?

  52. That would be profoundly wounding for a child, wouldn't it?

  53. They may never recover from that.

  54. The child's view of his father would be forever changed.

  55. He could never trust him, perhaps never trust anyone.

  56. When he gets older, I'm guessing he would either want to run as far away from that kind of father as possible

  57. or try and live up to the strictness of that father to try and prize some blessings out of him

  58. because he's so reluctant.

  59. There's this view of God as that kind of father.

  60. That lie entered humanity at the start of human history.

  61. That's what Genesis 3 is about.

  62. And the human race is wounded.

  63. We're wounded by this false view of God.

  64. It's a view of God that deep down we say,

  65. if I ever give myself completely over to God, I will be miserable.

  66. I can't trust him to give myself completely to him.

  67. Now, I'm going to suggest a few symptoms I've found in my own thinking, in my own attitudes.

  68. Believing this lie, if I give myself to God completely, I'll be miserable.

  69. I think I find it when I have this dichotomy in my mind.

  70. Either I can serve God or I can do what will make me happy.

  71. Scripture says there is never a choice.

  72. It is always the same thing.

  73. But in my head, somehow, I've made a choice.

  74. I think it sometimes looks like justifying a course of action.

  75. Someone saying, Scripture, that's the wrong path, David.

  76. I know that.

  77. I know it's the wrong path.

  78. But I don't care.

  79. Because I think this path will make me happy.

  80. I see it in me when I'm fretting about my future.

  81. I can't just let God take care of my future.

  82. I can't completely hand that over to him.

  83. I see it when demanding my circumstances change.

  84. Refusing to believe that God in himself can be my peace.

  85. He can be my hope.

  86. He can be my life.

  87. He can be enough.

  88. I've got to have something else.

  89. I can't completely just have him.

  90. I think it can look like being too afraid to come to God with your sins.

  91. Like, he doesn't want to see you.

  92. He can't handle that.

  93. He won't forgive.

  94. He won't look after you.

  95. I think sometimes it looks like hanging on to my pride.

  96. I have to see myself as a good person.

  97. Because if I'm going to get blessing from God, I have to see myself as righteous.

  98. I can't just let go of that.

  99. All these things, I don't know if any of them resonated with you, but we fear to give ourselves

  100. completely over to God.

  101. So what's going to heal such a deep wound, a false view of what kind of father God is like?

  102. What's going to heal us?

  103. One thing, Emmanuel.

  104. We've got to see Emmanuel.

  105. We've got to see who God truly is.

  106. giving himself completely to us, to have us.

  107. And that's what we see in Emmanuel.

  108. Picture yourself again at the shopping centre, and after the miracle of finding a car park

  109. at Charlestown or Qatar or somewhere, you're in the shopping centre, you're hearing the carols

  110. come over the speakers, and finally a carols comes over, and you hear that name, Emmanuel.

  111. Why doesn't everyone just stop and drop their presence with fear and amazement,

  112. and some people just dropping to the floor?

  113. Why aren't we moved by that name?

  114. God with us.

  115. It is an incredible claim.

  116. I want to look at three things today of what Emmanuel means from our passage.

  117. He is God.

  118. He is with us.

  119. And he saves us from our sin.

  120. That's what Emmanuel means.

  121. So let's go through these things.

  122. I hope we see more of Emmanuel today.

  123. Well, physically, Jesus is Mary's boy.

  124. He's a baby.

  125. Conceived in, I assume, Mary's fallopian tube.

  126. He grew in a womb attached by an umbilical cord, dependent on her blood and nutrients,

  127. from the size of a blueberry to an eggplant.

  128. I'm not sure what our third child is up to these days, a cauliflower or something.

  129. I don't know.

  130. Kicking her bladder?

  131. Physically, Mary's boy.

  132. Matthew's point, we didn't read this, but there's a family tree just before our section,

  133. and the point of that is that legally, Jesus is Joseph's boy.

  134. God's promises throughout history is that a Jew, a descendant of King David,

  135. would be the saviour of the world.

  136. The genealogy shows Jesus is, through Joseph's line, the David, the expected David.

  137. So physically, Mary's boy, legally, Joseph's boy.

  138. But this whole section that was read to us is all from Joseph's perspective.

  139. We're in his mind.

  140. We're in his shoes, so to speak.

  141. We're meant to feel the crisis.

  142. We're meant to feel the crisis.

  143. Imagine the personal crisis for him, his future ahead of him.

  144. They're engaged, and she's pregnant.

  145. How dashed would he be?

  146. He's wrestling.

  147. What do I do with this?

  148. He's a godly man.

  149. He doesn't just brush the law of God aside.

  150. It must be adultery.

  151. Like, Mary, you look so godly, but what other explanation is there?

  152. But he's so – he doesn't want to put it to shame.

  153. There's this crisis going on.

  154. Why are we meant to feel that?

  155. Because he's not Joseph's boy.

  156. That's the point.

  157. I think that's the point in this section.

  158. It's a pretty simple point.

  159. Physically, he's Mary's boy.

  160. Legally, Joseph's boy.

  161. But his deepest identity, his deepest origin, he's Yahweh's boy.

  162. He's not Joseph's.

  163. He's God.

  164. He's God's boy.

  165. He's God's boy.

  166. Would struggle to believe this claim more than the Jewish culture.

  167. If you think of Eastern religions, God is this impersonal thing, a force in everything.

  168. We're kind of like all connected to the divine in some sort of way.

  169. If you think of the Greeks and Romans back then, the gods kind of became human in all sorts of ways

  170. and pretty crass ways sometimes.

  171. that kind of claim wouldn't be too shocking but he's quoting Isaiah

  172. the same Isaiah who's speaking on God's behalf

  173. imagine God was he got out his kitchen scales to make some Christmas cookies and

  174. you're gonna have to use your imagination here he gets out the scales and for some reason or

  175. another all the nations of the world in all the military might are on those scales I don't know

  176. how they got there but just come with me in this bizarre illustration it doesn't register on his

  177. scales you put all the nuclear warheads on those scales it's not even half a gram to Yahweh

  178. behold the nations are accounted as the dust on the scales it don't even register

  179. and he's saying this Yahweh has

  180. has become one of us it's a huge claim he's very God

  181. like would you as a grown adult for the adults in the room would you as a grown adult freely choose if

  182. if if illness didn't make you would you freely choose to be dependent on your parents that they

  183. would have to wipe your bottom and give you a bath again that's nothing I'm sorry if that's a bit

  184. crass but that is nothing compared to how far Yahweh has come down

  185. to be a dependent human being

  186. I'm searching for language here like it's too big to get our heads around isn't it

  187. so let's see Emmanuel God is giving himself his eternal son

  188. to lower himself as a creature forever forever for you for me

  189. that's what Emmanuel means and Emmanuel also means he's with us

  190. he's with us in this dark world

  191. as as Adam's already open the morning talking about we we didn't read what happens next in the story

  192. he enters the world in poverty

  193. the straw in the animal feeding trough probably piercing his sides this is not a neat comfortable image

  194. Herod King Herod determines to exterminate him

  195. killing many other boys just to try and wipe him out

  196. he chooses to enter this dark world and experience it firsthand

  197. for many Christmas is a joyful time but for a lot it's the most difficult day

  198. potentially of the year

  199. because you've got the grief

  200. of the loved one who's no longer at the table

  201. you've got the fear

  202. that this could be your last

  203. you've got the anger

  204. and the despair

  205. of the fractured relationships

  206. yes you're in the same room but

  207. your world's apart

  208. you've got the loneliness

  209. and we've got the evil at Bondi Beach

  210. Christmas tells us God hasn't given up on his evil world

  211. Emmanuel means he's come into the darkness

  212. he's tasted it firsthand

  213. he's experienced it

  214. all of it

  215. we all know the difference

  216. when you're going through a hard time

  217. we all know the difference

  218. when someone who's trying to be kind

  219. is trying to sympathise with you

  220. but then someone comes

  221. who's been through the same thing

  222. you know the difference don't you

  223. they really do know

  224. what you're going through

  225. they understand

  226. Jesus knows the loneliness

  227. of being abandoned by all

  228. he knows it

  229. he knows family rejection

  230. his village tried to drive him off a cliff

  231. he knows temptation to be unfaithful

  232. when you're really

  233. hard situation

  234. and you just

  235. you just want to escape it

  236. he knows unjust treatment

  237. he's come

  238. in Emmanuel means he's come in

  239. and he's tasted the suffering firsthand

  240. now it doesn't explain the reason for my suffering

  241. your suffering

  242. it doesn't give you an explanation for it

  243. but it tells you what it isn't

  244. it can't mean

  245. God doesn't care

  246. it can't mean he's remote

  247. because God totally gave himself to be with us

  248. in all the evil

  249. and all the grief

  250. of this world

  251. and all the temptation

  252. of this world

  253. that's how far he's come

  254. so Emmanuel

  255. let's see Emmanuel

  256. God come down

  257. Emmanuel

  258. he's with us in this dark

  259. sinful world

  260. and Emmanuel

  261. he saves his people

  262. from their sins

  263. Isaiah the prophet

  264. who Matthew quotes here

  265. 800 years before Jesus

  266. in Isaiah's day

  267. that sign

  268. was awful

  269. news

  270. God was going to show up

  271. before this child

  272. comes of age

  273. through military

  274. foreign power

  275. to punish his people

  276. for their sins

  277. the angel

  278. announces to Joseph

  279. the good news

  280. for us today

  281. Emmanuel

  282. now means

  283. he will save

  284. his people

  285. from their sins

  286. now that's only good news

  287. if we know our sin

  288. I feel a bit sorry

  289. for Joseph

  290. there's almost no

  291. Christmas carol

  292. we didn't sing a Christmas carol

  293. about him last night

  294. we had one about Mary

  295. but

  296. we've got a whole section

  297. of the Bible here

  298. about Joseph

  299. and nothing

  300. he's a really good man

  301. he's an

  302. admirable

  303. guy

  304. he thinks

  305. Mary's broken

  306. the law

  307. of God

  308. and he's faithful

  309. to the law

  310. of God

  311. he can't just

  312. ignore it

  313. and push it aside

  314. but then

  315. he's not self-righteous

  316. he's not trying

  317. to punish

  318. Mary

  319. he's trying

  320. to quietly

  321. divorce her

  322. he doesn't want

  323. to it seems

  324. but even

  325. this good man

  326. Joseph

  327. needs

  328. to accept

  329. that he needs

  330. a saviour

  331. to rescue him

  332. from the power

  333. of his sin

  334. there was a British

  335. atheist

  336. Francis Buffett

  337. who once said

  338. about anyone

  339. who pauses

  340. to reflect on

  341. themselves honestly

  342. he said this

  343. you discover yourself

  344. as a being

  345. who does not

  346. fit easily

  347. with your own wishes

  348. a being

  349. who acts

  350. against yourself

  351. as often

  352. as you act

  353. for yourself

  354. who is resistant

  355. to your own

  356. best intentions

  357. who whatever

  358. the line is

  359. that your society

  360. and you yourself

  361. draw between

  362. the good

  363. and the bad

  364. are some

  365. of the time

  366. voting haplessly

  367. on both sides

  368. of it

  369. can you

  370. resonate

  371. I can resonate

  372. with that

  373. in 1961

  374. Adolf Eichmann

  375. he was the

  376. first lieutenant

  377. in the SS

  378. World War II

  379. he was the

  380. mastermind

  381. behind the

  382. death camps

  383. and he was

  384. put on trial

  385. and a man

  386. called

  387. a survivor

  388. you healed

  389. in all

  390. he came

  391. to testify

  392. against him

  393. and when

  394. he saw

  395. him

  396. he collapsed

  397. on the floor

  398. and he was

  399. sobbing

  400. and he fainted

  401. which

  402. you could

  403. imagine

  404. but 22

  405. years later

  406. Jehiel

  407. was interviewed

  408. on 60

  409. Minutes

  410. and he

  411. showed the

  412. clip of him

  413. falling apart

  414. in the

  415. courtroom

  416. and he

  417. was asked

  418. what was

  419. going through

  420. his mind

  421. at that

  422. point

  423. was it

  424. hatred

  425. were you

  426. just

  427. overwhelmed

  428. with fear

  429. was it

  430. the trauma

  431. coming back

  432. and Jehiel

  433. said no

  434. no

  435. no

  436. he said

  437. I came

  438. in and I

  439. looked at

  440. Eichmann

  441. and I

  442. realised

  443. this is

  444. not a

  445. demon

  446. this is

  447. someone

  448. just like

  449. me

  450. and if

  451. he's

  452. capable

  453. of doing

  454. this

  455. so am

  456. I

  457. and he's

  458. famous

  459. for this

  460. line

  461. Eichmann

  462. is in

  463. all of

  464. us

  465. he's

  466. a

  467. survivor

  468. he said

  469. Eichmann

  470. is in

  471. all of

  472. us

  473. he was

  474. facing

  475. himself

  476. every

  477. other

  478. religion

  479. says

  480. here's

  481. what you

  482. got to

  483. do

  484. to find

  485. God

  486. here's

  487. what you

  488. do

  489. Emmanuel

  490. says

  491. God

  492. came

  493. down

  494. to

  495. find

  496. you

  497. he

  498. came

  499. down

  500. to

  501. save

  502. us

  503. from

  504. the

  505. power

  506. and

  507. the

  508. punishment

  509. of

  510. sin

  511. he

  512. is

  513. one

  514. day

  515. going

  516. to

  517. get

  518. rid

  519. of

  520. all

  521. evil

  522. he's

  523. going

  524. to

  525. remake

  526. this

  527. world

  528. and

  529. when

  530. he

  531. does

  532. that

  533. he

  534. won't

  535. have

  536. to

  537. end

  538. you

  539. because

  540. he's

  541. already

  542. taken

  543. your

  544. sin

  545. he's

  546. come

  547. to

  548. save

  549. us

  550. from

  551. our

  552. sin

  553. so

  554. that

  555. we

  556. are

  557. free

  558. to

  559. enjoy

  560. God

  561. with

  562. us

  563. forever

  564. Joni

  565. Erickson

  566. Tata

  567. a

  568. quadriplegic

  569. was asked

  570. by Billy

  571. Graham

  572. to paint

  573. a picture

  574. of Mary

  575. and Jesus

  576. if we

  577. could

  578. do we

  579. have

  580. that

  581. yeah

  582. thanks

  583. so

  584. you'll

  585. see

  586. Mary's

  587. knees

  588. transition

  589. into

  590. the

  591. hills

  592. where

  593. this

  594. Emmanuel

  595. will

  596. go

  597. to

  598. save

  599. us

  600. from

  601. our

  602. sins

  603. she

  604. was

  605. inspired

  606. by

  607. a

  608. poem

  609. by

  610. Lucy

  611. Shaw

  612. to

  613. know

  614. my

  615. darkness

  616. ended

  617. brought

  618. to

  619. this

  620. birth

  621. for

  622. me

  623. to

  624. be

  625. newborn

  626. and

  627. for

  628. him

  629. to

  630. see

  631. me

  632. mended

  633. I

  634. must

  635. see

  636. him

  637. torn

  638. do you

  639. see

  640. Emmanuel

  641. giving

  642. all

  643. of

  644. himself

  645. to

  646. us

  647. well

  648. the

  649. angel

  650. says

  651. to

  652. Joseph

  653. do

  654. not

  655. fear

  656. do

  657. not

  658. fear

  659. to

  660. take

  661. Mary

  662. and

  663. the

  664. implication

  665. of

  666. him

  667. taking

  668. Mary

  669. do

  670. not

  671. fear

  672. to

  673. take

  674. Jesus

  675. what

  676. did

  677. Joseph

  678. have

  679. to

  680. fear

  681. well

  682. he

  683. had

  684. to

  685. fear

  686. the

  687. loss

  688. of

  689. his

  690. self

  691. image

  692. as a

  693. good

  694. and

  695. decent

  696. person

  697. if

  698. he

  699. takes

  700. Jesus

  701. in

  702. that

  703. traditional

  704. moral

  705. community

  706. everyone's

  707. going to

  708. assume

  709. he's

  710. the

  711. father

  712. let's

  713. face

  714. it

  715. kiss

  716. his

  717. good

  718. reputation

  719. !

  720. Goodbye!

  721. They're

  722. going to

  723. be

  724. treated

  725. as

  726. a

  727. bit

  728. of

  729. a

  730. scandal

  731. he's

  732. got

  733. to

  734. embrace

  735. that

  736. but

  737. more

  738. than

  739. just

  740. the

  741. false

  742. reputation

  743. from

  744. others

  745. he's

  746. got

  747. to

  748. embrace

  749. what

  750. the

  751. angel

  752. says

  753. that

  754. he

  755. really

  756. isn't

  757. a

  758. good

  759. man

  760. he

  761. might

  762. be

  763. decent

  764. but

  765. he's

  766. not

  767. a

  768. good

  769. man

  770. he

  771. will

  772. need

  773. this

  774. child

  775. to

  776. save

  777. him

  778. from

  779. his

  780. sins

  781. don't

  782. fear

  783. to

  784. take

  785. him

  786. don't

  787. fear

  788. to

  789. lose

  790. that

  791. image

  792. of

  793. yourself

  794. as

  795. good

  796. he

  797. will

  798. give

  799. you

  800. something

  801. so

  802. much

  803. better

  804. forgiveness

  805. Joseph

  806. do

  807. not

  808. fear

  809. to

  810. lose

  811. your

  812. self

  813. control

  814. your

  815. authority

  816. you

  817. all

  818. know

  819. we've

  820. got

  821. a

  822. son

  823. due

  824. in

  825. March

  826. and

  827. we've

  828. got

  829. a

  830. short

  831. list

  832. of

  833. names

  834. and

  835. Colin

  836. made

  837. a deal

  838. with

  839. us

  840. when

  841. sorry

  842. Colin

  843. I'm

  844. throwing

  845. you

  846. under

  847. the

  848. bus

  849. here

  850. when

  851. he

  852. was

  853. cutting

  854. the

  855. carpet

  856. squares

  857. of

  858. the

  859. tiles

  860. he

  861. made

  862. a deal

  863. with

  864. us

  865. that

  866. if

  867. you

  868. cut

  869. them

  870. perfectly

  871. we

  872. might

  873. just

  874. have

  875. a

  876. Colin

  877. bot

  878. in

  879. our

  880. midst

  881. come

  882. March

  883. !

  884. you

  885. don't

  886. name

  887. this

  888. child

  889. he

  890. names

  891. you

  892. don't

  893. fear

  894. to

  895. take

  896. him

  897. but

  898. if

  899. you

  900. embrace

  901. Jesus

  902. Joseph

  903. give

  904. up

  905. all

  906. your

  907. authority

  908. this

  909. child

  910. comes

  911. into

  912. your

  913. life

  914. and

  915. he's

  916. going

  917. to

  918. totally

  919. take

  920. over

  921. and

  922. that

  923. is

  924. great

  925. news

  926. that's

  927. wonderful

  928. news

  929. because

  930. he's

  931. much

  932. better

  933. at

  934. running

  935. your

  936. life

  937. than

  938. you

  939. are

  940. don't

  941. fear

  942. to

  943. lose

  944. your

  945. sense

  946. of

  947. control

  948. brothers

  949. and

  950. sisters

  951. let me

  952. end

  953. with

  954. this

  955. do

  956. not

  957. fear

  958. to

  959. take

  960. Jesus

  961. don't

  962. fear

  963. to

  964. give

  965. yourself

  966. completely

  967. over

  968. to

  969. him

  970. no

  971. boundaries

  972. no

  973. no

  974. no

  975. conditions

  976. there's

  977. only one

  978. way

  979. you and

  980. I

  981. will

  982. do

  983. that

  984. if

  985. we

  986. see

  987. Emmanuel

  988. let

  989. him

  990. heal

  991. that

  992. wound

  993. in

  994. your

  995. heart

  996. see

  997. the

  998. light

  999. flood

  1000. in

  1001. to

  1002. expose

  1003. that

  1004. lie

  1005. of the

  1006. kind

  1007. of God

  1008. he

  1009. is

  1010. he's

  1011. the kind

  1012. of God

  1013. who

  1014. gives

  1015. all of

  1016. himself

  1017. to us

  1018. to have

  1019. us

  1020. Emmanuel

  1021. giving

  1022. all of

  1023. himself

  1024. for us

  1025. to have

  1026. us

  1027. forever

  1028. to be

  1029. with us

  1030. forever

  1031. if you

  1032. see

  1033. Emmanuel

  1034. you don't

  1035. need a

  1036. fear

  1037. let's

  1038. let's

  1039. completely

  1040. give

  1041. ourselves

  1042. over

  1043. to him

  1044. will

  1045. you pray

  1046. with me

  1047. let's

  1048. pray

  1049. father in

  1050. heaven

  1051. you know

  1052. each of

  1053. our

  1054. hearts

  1055. you know

  1056. where

  1057. we're

  1058. fearing

  1059. to trust

  1060. you

  1061. where we

  1062. just

  1063. can't

  1064. let go

  1065. or

  1066. we're

  1067. in

  1068. too

  1069. much

  1070. pain

  1071. Lord

  1072. I pray

  1073. that you

  1074. would

  1075. press

  1076. the

  1077. truth

  1078. of

  1079. Jesus

  1080. come

  1081. down

  1082. to

  1083. be with

  1084. us

  1085. in the

  1086. darkness

  1087. to

  1088. rescue

  1089. us

  1090. from

  1091. the

  1092. darkness

  1093. so

  1094. that we

  1095. might

  1096. be

  1097. healed

  1098. and

  1099. mended

  1100. forgiven

  1101. and made

  1102. new

  1103. forever

  1104. with you

  1105. Lord

  1106. please

  1107. press

  1108. Emmanuel

  1109. deep

  1110. into

  1111. each

  1112. of

  1113. our

  1114. hearts

  1115. forgive

  1116. us

  1117. for

  1118. having

  1119. a

  1120. false

  1121. view

  1122. of

  1123. you

  1124. please

  1125. fill us

  1126. with a

  1127. true

  1128. view

  1129. of you

  1130. this

  1131. Christmas

  1132. that we

  1133. may

  1134. trust

  1135. you

  1136. and have

  1137. joy

  1138. in

  1139. you

  1140. and

  1141. make

  1142. choices

  1143. that

  1144. honour

  1145. you

  1146. pray

  1147. this

  1148. in

  1149. Jesus

  1150. name

  1151. Amen
