  1. We're reading from 2 Peter 3 verses 8 to 10.

    2 Peter 3:8–10

  2. Let's awaken our hearts and minds with the word of the Lord.

  3. It says from verse 8.

  4. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

  5. The heavens will disappear with a roar.

  6. The elements will be destroyed by fire.

  7. And the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

  8. I just thought I'd read to you from Psalm 90 just a little bit.

  9. It says from verse 3.

  10. You turn people back to dust saying, return to dust you mortals.

  11. A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by or like a watch in the night.

  12. Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death.

  13. They are like the new grass of the morning.

  14. In the morning it springs up new but by evening it's dry and withered.

  15. And then I just want to read to you from the end of Malachi as well.

  16. We're not going to do the whole Bible.

  17. I'll just get to this bit here.

  18. This is the penultimate and ultimate verse of the Old Testament.

  19. Chapter 4 verse 5 and 6.

  20. They're two really important bits of context.

  21. What we're looking at here.

  22. But why don't we pray?

  23. Let's pray.

  24. Gracious Lord and Heavenly Father, the powerful Creator and Judge, the Lord for whom a thousand years are like a day.

  25. Father, we come before you as your creatures, as mortals who are like the grass of the field.

  26. Entirely dependent upon you.

  27. Father, we pray we'd understand our position as we look at your word now.

  28. We pray, Lord, we listen well, that your spirit would indeed infuse your word in our hearts.

  29. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen.

  31. It can be very difficult to tell someone they're fired.

  32. I don't know if you've been in that position before in your life.

  33. I want to say show of hands if you've had to sack somebody but I don't want to do that at the same time.

  34. Oh, somebody's proud of it in the back row.

  35. That's great.

  36. No, I'm just kidding.

  37. I say a lot of things I regret.

  38. That'll be one of them.

  39. Anyway, it can be difficult to tell someone they're fired.

  40. I've had to do it, especially when you care about them.

  41. Kath and I, we, I got like diagnosed with anxiety disorder when I was, just before I went to Bible college.

  42. And one of the things that I worked out and helped me was watching mindless TV.

  43. So it's medical.

  44. That's why I do it.

  45. Kath and I watched this show on Apple TV called Acapulco.

  46. Show of hands if you've seen Acapulco.

  47. All right.

  48. That's good.

  49. I don't know whether we watched it because we've watched every other thing on the internet.

  50. But anyway, it's about a young bloke called Maximo who gets a dream job of managing the flashiest resort in Acapulco.

  51. He's quite an endearing character.

  52. One of the hardest things he has to do as this sweet, innocent young local guy is learn to fire his friends.

  53. In particular, the resort bartender who's been giving free drinks to everybody just so he can get bigger tips from them.

  54. It's a good strategy, right?

  55. You give stuff away for free.

  56. They tip you.

  57. You make all the money.

  58. Now, Maximo knew about this.

  59. But the thing about this sweet guy is he just couldn't bring himself to sack him.

  60. Even though he knew that his own job depended on it, he couldn't sack this guy who was slowly destroying the resort by his actions.

  61. He loved him too much.

  62. That's on Apple TV if you want to watch it.

  63. Anyway, as we continue in this part of 2 Peter, we're going to see that God is incredibly patient with us.

  64. He loves us.

  65. He doesn't want anyone to perish.

  66. He loves us more than Maximo loved his colleagues.

  67. And that's great for us, right?

  68. It's great for our neighbours.

  69. It's great for our kids.

  70. It's great for our friends.

  71. It's great for the entirety of my extended family who haven't yet put their faith in Jesus.

  72. But the difference between the Lord and Maximo, there are lots of differences.

  73. The Lord won't let us rebel against him forever.

  74. He is a God of perfect justice, which is bad for anyone who hasn't put their faith in him.

  75. Now, there aren't many verses here, but they do tell us a lot.

  76. So if you've got your Bibles open in any translation at 2 Peter 3, verse 8,

    2 Peter 3:8

  77. the first thing we're going to see here is God is patient.

  78. He doesn't want anyone to perish.

  79. This is such a beautiful part of the character of God.

  80. All the parts are beautiful.

  81. I love this.

  82. It says,

  83. Does that seem familiar to you at all?

  84. In the first part of the passage, Peter explained that there will be a judgment day.

  85. Remember, even though it was first talked about 800 years before 2 Peter was written,

  86. God is going to do it.

  87. Malachi spoke about it.

  88. Even, you know, 400 years after it was first spoken about, Malachi spoke about it again.

  89. God is going to do it.

  90. The Lord is going to come and strike the land with total destruction.

  91. They were Malachi's words.

  92. And Peter said in the first part of this passage,

  93. even though people will ridicule the idea of that ever happening, remember,

  94. even though they'll mock it,

  95. does God always do what he says?

  96. Of course he does.

  97. And here, Peter wants his readers to know

  98. God's timescale is different to ours.

  99. And he takes us to Psalm 90

  100. to remind us that God's timescale is different to ours.

  101. A thousand years in your sight are like a day, the psalmist sang.

  102. The psalmist is saying,

  103. the sheer majesty of God is incomprehensible for us.

  104. We think 30, 40, 90 years is a long time.

  105. It's nothing.

  106. It's like the grass growing in the morning and withering in the evening

  107. compared to the power and the majesty of God.

  108. Time is, it's a different scale with him.

  109. And Peter's referring to that here in order to say to his readers,

  110. God's timing is different to our timing.

  111. God's patience is different to our patience.

  112. We don't get it.

  113. We can't get our head around it.

  114. I look around at the folly of the wisdom of the youth of my children

  115. because I've lived so much longer than them.

  116. What a fool, right?

  117. Compared to our creator God

  118. for whom a thousand years are like a day.

  119. God's timing is not our timing.

  120. But a key reason behind his timing in verse 9

  121. is his patience.

  122. He is patient.

  123. He's not slow in keeping his promise to judge the wicked.

  124. Instead, he's patient.

  125. That instead, it's a contrastive conjunction, right?

  126. It's strong.

  127. It's a big but.

  128. Don't be mistaken.

  129. God is not slow in keeping his promises.

  130. No, he's patient.

  131. He's patient.

  132. And this case, the reason he's being patient

  133. is clearly stated in verse 9.

  134. He doesn't desire that anyone should perish.

  135. How good is that, right?

  136. What sort of a God would create people just to destroy them?

  137. Well, God doesn't desire.

  138. What does God desire?

  139. God doesn't desire that anyone should perish.

  140. That is, he wants everyone to come to Jesus.

  141. He wants everyone to come to repentance.

  142. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,

  143. as some understand slowness.

  144. Instead, but,

  145. by contrast, he's patient with you.

  146. Not wanting anyone to perish,

  147. but everyone to come to repentance.

  148. I love that about the character of God.

  149. This is a refrain in the scriptures.

  150. This is an important part of the character of God.

  151. Did you know this about God?

  152. It stands out like lights on a Christmas tree

  153. in a dark night.

  154. God's desire is for all to turn to him.

  155. In 1 Timothy 2, verse 4,

    1 Timothy 2:4

  156. Paul says,

  157. God wants all people to be saved

  158. and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  159. That's what God wants.

  160. How good is that?

  161. Twice in Ezekiel,

  162. in a book that at times can be very angry,

  163. in a book that reflects the justice of God,

  164. God says,

  165. I do not delight in the death of the wicked,

  166. but I am pleased when they turn from their ways and live.

  167. That's what God is like.

  168. That's the God that we follow.

  169. Now, to be clear,

  170. and also a bit confusing,

  171. and Kath said,

  172. don't talk about this,

  173. just go through,

  174. it's a bit too distracting.

  175. And I was like,

  176. I'm going to talk about it.

  177. The Bible is also clear

  178. that it is only and entirely

  179. by the decree of God

  180. that anyone would turn and be saved.

  181. Got it?

  182. It's only and entirely

  183. by the decree of God,

  184. a D word,

  185. decree of God,

  186. that anyone would turn and be saved.

  187. Yet, what's the other D word?

  188. What's the desire of God

  189. that everyone would be saved?

  190. We believe that God is sovereign

  191. over every part of salvation.

  192. I watched an amazing 2 minute,

  193. 50 second video

  194. by Pastor David Bott during the week,

  195. and one of the distinctive characteristics

  196. of Gracie Evangelical Church

  197. is that we believe that God

  198. is in charge of every part of salvation.

  199. Absolutely.

  200. God rules.

  201. Okay?

  202. God is sovereign over salvation.

  203. The only reason anyone would turn to God

  204. is if he decreed it.

  205. And we take comfort in that great truth,

  206. knowing that if we are a believer,

  207. praise the Lord,

  208. he's done it for us.

  209. It's great.

  210. Every aspect of it.

  211. But while we hold that truth firmly,

  212. like one track on a rail,

  213. we hold the other truth firmly,

  214. like the other rail.

  215. That while God might decree

  216. who is and isn't saved,

  217. his desire,

  218. as unquestionably expressed in the Scriptures,

  219. is that all would turn to him.

  220. Is that all would turn

  221. and put their faith in Jesus.

  222. That everyone would come to repentance.

  223. We don't try and force those two rails together,

  224. do we?

  225. Because we don't want to crash the truth train,

  226. right?

  227. But God's decree

  228. is what saves us.

  229. Yet his desire

  230. is expressed in his patience.

  231. And that is that he doesn't want

  232. any to perish,

  233. but everyone to come to repentance

  234. and to believe in Jesus.

  235. Peter says,

  236. this is why the day of the Lord hasn't come yet.

  237. God is patient.

  238. Are you patient?

  239. And sometimes,

  240. I had red hair at some stage in my life,

  241. a bit like Robert used to have blonde curly hair.

  242. I used to have red hair.

  243. And I was not very patient as a child at all.

  244. And I've gotten better as I've gotten older.

  245. Sometimes I might make a loose threat to my kids.

  246. I'll say to them,

  247. look mate,

  248. this is the third time

  249. I've asked you to get off your phone

  250. and go and clean up the kitchen.

  251. You've made a massive mess in there.

  252. And if you don't do it,

  253. I'm taking your phone off you

  254. for a month.

  255. Because I'm losing my patience, right?

  256. And so I just throw this big month out there

  257. of my kids not having any screen time,

  258. which I will suffer for.

  259. For them,

  260. that is akin to condemnation.

  261. I may as well be damning them

  262. to the corner of hell in their mind

  263. by taking their phone off them.

  264. You know what?

  265. I don't actually want to do it.

  266. The reason I'm saying that to them,

  267. the reason I'm saying,

  268. I'll take your phone off you,

  269. isn't because I'm some sort of nasty overlord

  270. who delights in seeing them without screens.

  271. No,

  272. I actually just want them to delight

  273. in cleaning up after themselves.

  274. I want them to learn to have servant hearts.

  275. And so,

  276. I just,

  277. I'm patient.

  278. Before I inflict the punishment,

  279. I let a bit of time pass.

  280. But,

  281. my patience is not a thousand years.

  282. I reckon I've got about 45 minutes up my sleeve.

  283. God is not like that.

  284. He is so patient.

  285. And his patience is driven by his desire

  286. that none should perish.

  287. You think about God in the history of the Old Testament.

  288. He's been patient with humanity from the beginning.

  289. You may not remember this,

  290. but what did he say to the first humans

  291. would happen if they sin?

  292. You'll die.

  293. Yet they ate the fruit.

  294. And did they die?

  295. Well,

  296. yes,

  297. they did.

  298. Because God always does what God says he will do,

  299. right?

  300. But was he patient with them?

  301. Absolutely he was.

  302. They lived for hundreds of years,

  303. over which time he clothed them,

  304. he fed them,

  305. he gave them descendants.

  306. God's patience,

  307. it's been there from the beginning.

  308. He waited thousands of years for humanity

  309. to listen to his word through the prophets.

  310. There's a beautiful part in Romans

  311. where it says,

  312. I held out my hand all day long to you.

  313. God is so patient.

  314. He demonstrated his patience

  315. by withholding his judgment,

  316. by sending his son to bear his judgment

  317. on our sin.

  318. Jesus is God's final act of patience towards us.

  319. How great,

  320. right?

  321. You want to know if God is patient?

  322. After thousands of years of rebellion,

  323. he sends his son

  324. to hold out an offer of salvation to us one more time.

  325. God is patiently holding the offer of forgiveness out right now

  326. to sinners.

  327. Like me,

  328. like you,

  329. our neighbors,

  330. our colleagues.

  331. One last offer.

  332. God's final word.

  333. This is why we're here today.

  334. This is why I'm in Bathurst

  335. and you're in Newcastle

  336. or the greater Newcastle region.

  337. God's left us here

  338. because he's patient.

  339. He doesn't want

  340. our families,

  341. our neighbors,

  342. our classmates,

  343. our colleagues to perish.

  344. There's this beautiful part in Matthew's gospel.

  345. We're looking at Matthew next term in church

  346. and there's this beautiful part

  347. where Jesus looks around at the crowd

  348. and it says that he sees that they're harassed and helpless

  349. like sheep without a shepherd.

  350. And how does he feel towards them?

  351. He has compassion on them.

  352. That's the character of God for our world.

  353. God's left us here among these harassed and helpless people

  354. and if we're part of his church,

  355. he's left us here to help these people come to a knowledge of truth about Jesus.

  356. Is that how you understand

  357. why you are where you are?

  358. Why you're in the number of the house that you're in?

  359. Why you're in 22 White Street?

  360. Why you're doing first year electrical engineering?

  361. Do you understand that you are where you are

  362. as a member of the people of God

  363. because God is patient

  364. and he doesn't want any to perish?

  365. He's placed you there

  366. that you might witness to his character,

  367. that you might share the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ

  368. and that your neighbours,

  369. your colleagues,

  370. your classmates,

  371. your friends,

  372. your children,

  373. your parents,

  374. they might somehow see your good deeds

  375. or hear the gospel

  376. and turn and glorify God

  377. on the day that he comes to visit us.

  378. That's God's plan.

  379. You're a plant

  380. in whatever context you're in.

  381. You might have think that you moved to Newcastle

  382. for family

  383. and you might have think you moved there to study

  384. or for friends

  385. or for a relationship

  386. or for a job

  387. for the career.

  388. Wrong.

  389. You are there because God is patient

  390. and he does not want the people of Newcastle to perish.

  391. He's decreed that some people in that city

  392. might come to know the Lord Jesus Christ

  393. and you are part of his plan.

  394. You're an expression of the patience of God.

  395. God.

  396. That's our purpose.

  397. Do you talk to people about Jesus?

  398. How do you live out your purpose?

  399. Maybe

  400. you might invite people to church.

  401. Maybe you try to live a godly life around them.

  402. Maybe God's blessed you with children

  403. and you think to yourself,

  404. well,

  405. God's given me these kids

  406. in order that I might reveal his character to them

  407. so I'm going to try and read the word with them.

  408. I'm going to try and point them towards Jesus

  409. and when they get older and rebel,

  410. I'm going to pray for them.

  411. If we understand our purpose,

  412. if we understand the character of God,

  413. if we understand the heart of God,

  414. it reshapes how we act in our circumstances.

  415. If I'm at work to be a witness,

  416. there are things I just don't do.

  417. You know,

  418. I was an accountant.

  419. I became a Christian while I was an accountant.

  420. I know that my clients were interested in earning

  421. and saving as much money as they could.

  422. Before I was a Christian,

  423. the way that I acted in order to make that happen for them,

  424. well,

  425. it had to change when I became a Christian

  426. because I'm trying to witness to them.

  427. When I'm getting out of my car

  428. after the commute,

  429. I've got to drive about three and a half minutes

  430. to get home from church.

  431. It's very easy for me not to want to talk to my neighbour.

  432. Jeff is the guy that I usually see.

  433. He's on the top side

  434. where the fence doesn't extend all the way to the front.

  435. And I'll see him there

  436. and sometimes I've had a bit of an intense day.

  437. I'll just wait a few seconds in the car

  438. hoping that Jeff goes inside

  439. or then I'll get out

  440. and I'll just turn.

  441. That's not why I'm in 22 Rosemont Avenue.

  442. I'm not there to avoid people.

  443. God actually doesn't want Jeff to perish.

  444. He's actually placed me in my house.

  445. Forget about my job at church.

  446. He's placed me in my house to witness to Jeff.

  447. It's possible Jeff has some Christian family member somewhere

  448. who's praying that God might put somebody in Jeff's life

  449. who could bear witness to him

  450. and here's this dog skiving off from his car after work

  451. trying to avoid Jeff.

  452. God doesn't want Jeff to perish.

  453. Our purpose is to live out God's character

  454. in the context of our ordinary lives.

  455. Did you realise that?

  456. That you are not put on earth to avoid people

  457. and get on with life.

  458. The reason you are still here

  459. is because God is patient.

  460. He doesn't want anyone to perish

  461. but everyone to turn in repentance

  462. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  463. We're still here because that is what God is like.

  464. But God is also just.

  465. And he will expose everything.

  466. Read from verse 10.

  467. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

  468. The heavens will disappear with a roar.

  469. The elements will be destroyed by fire

  470. and the earth and everything done in it

  471. will be laid bare.

  472. While God cares deeply about the creatures

  473. he breathed life into

  474. he is just

  475. and as the end of verse 10 says

  476. the earth and its deeds

  477. will be exposed

  478. before the judge.

  479. Or as Romans 14.12 says

  480. each of us will give an account

  481. of him or herself to God.

  482. Or as Hebrews 9.27 says

  483. it's destined for man to die once

  484. and after that comes judgment.

  485. Or as Hebrews 4.13 says

  486. no creature is hidden from his sight

  487. but all are naked and exposed

  488. to the eyes of him

  489. to whom we must give account.

  490. What a terrifying prospect, right?

  491. No one will escape

  492. the justice of God.

  493. It makes sense.

  494. Like if there is a creator God

  495. and it wasn't just a trivial flick of his

  496. you know he doesn't have

  497. like he's not just easily bored

  498. and so he decided to create the world.

  499. If there's a creator God

  500. who actually cares about his creation

  501. who created us for a purpose

  502. of course he's going to hold us

  503. to account for how we live.

  504. It just

  505. it doesn't make sense any other way.

  506. No one will escape

  507. the justice of God.

  508. He can't let our rebellion

  509. against him last forever.

  510. On the great and terrible day

  511. as Malachi calls it

  512. that he comes

  513. it seems like the old creation

  514. will be done away with

  515. and the new will come.

  516. Whether it's a renovation

  517. or a replacement

  518. you guys can talk about that

  519. over morning tea.

  520. But the destruction

  521. of the very fabric

  522. of the old order

  523. is a sure thing.

  524. Its constituent parts

  525. will be laid bare.

  526. That's the thrust

  527. of what this passage is saying.

  528. This is what the Bible teaches

  529. and this is what Christians believe

  530. that each of us

  531. will face the justice of God

  532. and none can escape that day.

  533. We won't even have our clothing

  534. to hide behind.

  535. We'll be exposed

  536. and laid bare.

  537. That grace

  538. that God first showed

  539. Adam and Eve

  540. in the garden

  541. we will be exposed

  542. completely

  543. before our God.

  544. We don't know

  545. when it's going to come.

  546. It'll be like a thief

  547. in the night.

  548. Unexpectedly

  549. we'll find ourselves

  550. before our creator

  551. on that great

  552. and terrible day.

  553. We sold

  554. our family farm

  555. recently.

  556. It's been in our family

  557. since European settlement.

  558. I have so many memories

  559. there.

  560. It's basically

  561. like my dad was in the bank

  562. when I was growing up

  563. so we moved around

  564. a whole stack

  565. but that farm

  566. was my real home.

  567. Recently

  568. the new owners

  569. bulldozed

  570. the original farmhouse.

  571. Yeah.

  572. Well

  573. actually it's not the original

  574. but it's the one

  575. that I grew up

  576. in and around

  577. because the original one

  578. is still there

  579. but it's not fit

  580. for habitation.

  581. But the one they bulldozed

  582. is 130 years old.

  583. There's literally

  584. no sign of it anymore.

  585. I was down visiting

  586. my mum last week.

  587. It's the first time

  588. I've been there

  589. since it's happened

  590. and yeah

  591. there's no sign

  592. of it anymore.

  593. And it's heartbreaking

  594. to go and see

  595. something that was

  596. so huge

  597. and so important

  598. and filled with

  599. so many memories

  600. and it's gone.

  601. how much more

  602. the destruction

  603. that awaits

  604. the heavens

  605. and the earth.

  606. You think about

  607. the beauty

  608. and the love

  609. the experiences

  610. you've had

  611. the marred image

  612. of God

  613. but the image

  614. of God

  615. nonetheless

  616. in your neighbours

  617. and friends

  618. and colleagues.

  619. One day

  620. the Lord

  621. will come

  622. like a thief

  623. and all of it

  624. will be exposed.

  625. The heavens

  626. will disappear

  627. the elements

  628. will be destroyed

  629. the earth

  630. and everything

  631. in it

  632. everything done

  633. in it

  634. will be laid bare.

  635. This is

  636. our conviction

  637. as followers

  638. of Jesus.

  639. Because we're

  640. aware of the

  641. unpredictability

  642. and inescapability

  643. of that great

  644. and terrible day

  645. it ought to

  646. become urgent

  647. for us

  648. to engage

  649. with our

  650. friends and

  651. family

  652. our neighbours

  653. and our

  654. colleagues

  655. our world

  656. how much

  657. more

  658. important

  659. is it

  660. for us

  661. than any

  662. other thing

  663. knowing that

  664. it could

  665. come at

  666. any time.

  667. people

  668. know

  669. in order

  670. to apply

  671. this

  672. stuff

  673. you

  674. actually

  675. have

  676. to

  677. believe

  678. it

  679. so

  680. the

  681. first

  682. question

  683. I have

  684. to ask

  685. is

  686. do you

  687. believe

  688. this

  689. do you

  690. accept

  691. this

  692. as

  693. true

  694. do you

  695. actually

  696. believe

  697. a day

  698. like

  699. this

  700. is

  701. coming

  702. if you

  703. do

  704. it's

  705. big

  706. you

  707. probably

  708. heard

  709. this

  710. preacher's

  711. illustration

  712. before

  713. if you

  714. knew a

  715. long-range

  716. missile was

  717. coming towards

  718. your neighbour

  719. and you

  720. didn't warn

  721. them or tell

  722. them to

  723. escape

  724. what sort

  725. of a

  726. neighbour

  727. would you

  728. be

  729. right

  730. it makes

  731. sense

  732. that if we

  733. know the

  734. great and

  735. terrible day

  736. of the

  737. Lord is

  738. coming

  739. like a

  740. thief in

  741. the

  742. night

  743. that we

  744. would

  745. prioritise

  746. evangelism

  747. God

  748. hasn't

  749. left us

  750. here

  751. to

  752. perfect

  753. the art

  754. of the

  755. Lord's

  756. supper

  757. God

  758. hasn't

  759. left us

  760. here

  761. to nail

  762. AGMs

  763. God

  764. hasn't

  765. left us

  766. here

  767. to

  768. finally

  769. sort

  770. out

  771. which

  772. version

  773. of

  774. be

  775. thou

  776. my

  777. vision

  778. we're

  779. going

  780. to

  781. sing

  782. it's

  783. the

  784. Lord's

  785. prayer

  786. of

  787. songs

  788. isn't

  789. it

  790. we've

  791. all

  792. got

  793. our

  794. own

  795. historical

  796. version

  797. of

  798. it

  799. God's

  800. left us

  801. here

  802. because

  803. he's

  804. patient

  805. and he

  806. doesn't

  807. want

  808. any

  809. to

  810. perish

  811. now

  812. none

  813. of the

  814. things

  815. we work

  816. on at

  817. church

  818. like

  819. songs

  820. and the

  821. Lord's

  822. supper

  823. and AGMs

  824. are evil

  825. but they're

  826. not why

  827. God's

  828. left us

  829. here

  830. God

  831. hasn't

  832. left us

  833. here

  834. so we

  835. can

  836. cloister

  837. ourselves

  838. away

  839. on

  840. church

  841. camps

  842. or so

  843. we can

  844. send our

  845. kids to

  846. Christian

  847. schools

  848. so they

  849. can

  850. make

  851. Christian

  852. friends

  853. and

  854. become

  855. Christian

  856. school

  857. teachers

  858. one

  859. day

  860. and

  861. play

  862. soccer

  863. on the

  864. weekend

  865. with

  866. their

  867. friends

  868. from

  869. church

  870. it's

  871. kind of

  872. funny

  873. but it's

  874. often how

  875. the Christian

  876. life is

  877. lived out

  878. God

  879. hasn't left us

  880. here for that

  881. purpose

  882. I'm not

  883. saying

  884. Christian

  885. schools

  886. and Christian

  887. soccer

  888. teams

  889. and

  890. you know

  891. Christian

  892. community

  893. is evil

  894. please don't

  895. hear me

  896. saying that

  897. but this

  898. is not

  899. heaven

  900. is it

  901. we're

  902. not here

  903. as an

  904. expression

  905. of heaven

  906. on earth

  907. we're

  908. here

  909. because

  910. God's

  911. patient

  912. not

  913. wanting

  914. anyone

  915. to

  916. perish

  917. God's

  918. left us

  919. here to

  920. point the

  921. people in

  922. this world

  923. the people

  924. in our

  925. ordinary

  926. lives

  927. to his

  928. patient

  929. and gracious

  930. offer of

  931. life in

  932. Jesus

  933. before the

  934. heavens and

  935. the earth

  936. are laid

  937. bare

  938. how do

  939. you go

  940. at positioning

  941. yourself for

  942. evangelism

  943. have you

  944. positioned

  945. yourself

  946. and your

  947. family

  948. to have

  949. the opportunity

  950. to do it

  951. in the way

  952. you've set

  953. up your

  954. life

  955. think about

  956. it

  957. if you're

  958. at the

  959. very early

  960. stage of

  961. having kids

  962. or you

  963. haven't had

  964. them yet

  965. ask yourself

  966. how are we

  967. going to set

  968. this thing

  969. up so our

  970. family can

  971. witness to

  972. the Lord

  973. Jesus

  974. Christ

  975. it might

  976. be the

  977. case

  978. that you

  979. decide to

  980. send them

  981. to a

  982. Christian

  983. school

  984. or to

  985. homeschool

  986. them

  987. to give

  988. them a

  989. solid

  990. anchor

  991. in the

  992. faith

  993. so that

  994. when they

  995. go out

  996. into the

  997. world

  998. they can

  999. live for

  1000. Jesus

  1001. but make

  1002. sure you're

  1003. very clear

  1004. with them

  1005. that that's

  1006. what you're

  1007. doing

  1008. you're not

  1009. hiding them

  1010. you're not

  1011. cloistering

  1012. them from

  1013. the evil

  1014. world

  1015. no you're

  1016. actually setting

  1017. them up to

  1018. reach this

  1019. world

  1020. it might be

  1021. that you

  1022. decide to

  1023. send them

  1024. to a

  1025. state

  1026. school

  1027. we did

  1028. that with

  1029. our

  1030. kids

  1031. you're

  1032. throwing

  1033. them to

  1034. the wolves

  1035. in a

  1036. sense

  1037. if you

  1038. do that

  1039. make sure

  1040. you read

  1041. the Bible

  1042. with them

  1043. and ask

  1044. them how

  1045. they're

  1046. going at

  1047. sharing the

  1048. gospel with

  1049. their friends

  1050. because we

  1051. are here for

  1052. that purpose

  1053. if you're

  1054. part of a

  1055. team a

  1056. sporting team

  1057. with all your

  1058. Christian mates

  1059. from church

  1060. invite somebody

  1061. who's not from

  1062. church into the

  1063. team or go

  1064. and join a

  1065. team with a

  1066. couple of your

  1067. Christian mates

  1068. that isn't

  1069. from church

  1070. God hasn't

  1071. left us here

  1072. just to

  1073. cloister

  1074. ourselves away

  1075. he's patient

  1076. this is so

  1077. offensive to

  1078. Christians when I

  1079. say this I

  1080. love that I

  1081. can do it

  1082. at your

  1083. church camp

  1084. and not

  1085. my own

  1086. but it's

  1087. really important

  1088. for us to

  1089. understand that

  1090. we're not

  1091. here to

  1092. perfect

  1093. ourselves and

  1094. ignore the

  1095. world around

  1096. us

  1097. we're here

  1098. for the

  1099. Paul says

  1100. to the

  1101. Thessalonians

  1102. I lived

  1103. among you

  1104. for your

  1105. sake

  1106. that's why

  1107. we're here

  1108. I think

  1109. about this

  1110. and I get a

  1111. little bit

  1112. emotional

  1113. because I'm

  1114. a bit

  1115. tired

  1116. but also

  1117. like

  1118. my whole

  1119. family is

  1120. non-Christian

  1121. like how

  1122. would I have

  1123. come to

  1124. Christ

  1125. if I didn't

  1126. have a

  1127. Christian

  1128. mate at

  1129. school

  1130. or if I

  1131. didn't have

  1132. some minister

  1133. who was

  1134. willing to

  1135. play in a

  1136. secular

  1137. AUSTAG team

  1138. and invite

  1139. me along

  1140. like if

  1141. we're not

  1142. doing that

  1143. in our

  1144. life

  1145. how will

  1146. people ever

  1147. know

  1148. you know

  1149. I've spoken

  1150. to a few

  1151. people who've

  1152. gone to

  1153. Zambia to

  1154. share the

  1155. gospel

  1156. that's great

  1157. right

  1158. there's so

  1159. many people

  1160. that have

  1161. gone to

  1162. Zambia in

  1163. this church

  1164. it's amazing

  1165. I'm not even

  1166. asking you to

  1167. go to

  1168. Zambia

  1169. like go to

  1170. I don't even

  1171. know the name

  1172. of a single

  1173. suburb in

  1174. Newcastle but

  1175. just go there

  1176. and point

  1177. people to

  1178. Christ

  1179. how do you

  1180. go with

  1181. talking to

  1182. people about

  1183. Jesus

  1184. I find it

  1185. hard

  1186. I've become

  1187. involved in

  1188. the local

  1189. athletics club

  1190. because all of

  1191. my life is

  1192. Christian

  1193. and our

  1194. kids are

  1195. now like

  1196. at the age

  1197. where they

  1198. don't want us

  1199. to be part of

  1200. their school

  1201. community anymore

  1202. they're all in

  1203. high school

  1204. so things have

  1205. changed

  1206. so the only

  1207. way I can

  1208. meet non-Christians

  1209. is through

  1210. sport for me

  1211. and I find it

  1212. really hard to

  1213. work out how

  1214. to shape my

  1215. conversation

  1216. towards Christ

  1217. and I've been

  1218. there for 12

  1219. months now in

  1220. Bathurst and

  1221. it's only really

  1222. this week I feel

  1223. like I've started

  1224. to make any

  1225. kind of progress

  1226. with that

  1227. but we've got

  1228. to be doing

  1229. it

  1230. I think sometimes

  1231. I'm so concerned

  1232. that people won't

  1233. like me if I

  1234. talk to them

  1235. about Jesus

  1236. but consider

  1237. glory right

  1238. they'll love

  1239. me

  1240. they'll be like

  1241. thanks so much

  1242. for saying that

  1243. to me

  1244. how do you go

  1245. at prioritising

  1246. evangelism

  1247. do you know

  1248. what God

  1249. is like

  1250. do you know

  1251. his desire

  1252. for the world

  1253. and does that

  1254. character reflect

  1255. in the way

  1256. you use

  1257. your life

  1258. why don't we

  1259. pray and ask

  1260. God for help

  1261. with that

  1262. because this is

  1349. we would

  1350. love it if
