  1. 2 Peter 3, starting at verse 1.

  2. This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved.

  3. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder

  4. where is the promise of this coming?

  5. For ever since the fathers fell asleep,

  6. all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.

  7. They deliberately overlook this fact,

  8. that the heavens existed long ago,

  9. and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,

  10. and that by means of these the world that then existed

  11. was deluged with water and perished.

  12. But by the same word, the heavens and earth,

  13. that now exist are stored up for fire,

  14. being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

  15. Good morning, everyone.

  16. I hope you sleep well.

  17. Or if not, you might get some sleep in the next few minutes.

  18. I've been up in Townsville for the last 12 years,

  19. and if you don't know the place, it's quite humid up there.

  20. And then I've been in Bathurst for the last 12 months,

  21. and there's actually no humidity.

  22. They took it.

  23. They took it all and took it to North Queensland.

  24. But there's humidity here,

  25. and so I feel myself sweating for the first time in like a year.

  26. This is not anything related to the passage or the talk.

  27. I'm just noticing it.

  28. Let's pray.

  29. Heavenly Father, thank you that you speak to us in the Scriptures.

  30. It's just so great to have your Word.

  31. Lord, we pray that your Spirit might apply it to our hearts now as we read it.

  32. Father, help us to understand just the reliability of everything you say to us

  33. and what it means for our life to come and our life today.

  34. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well, North Queensland, it is great.

  37. It's weird.

  38. It's got a kind of pirate town vibe to it,

  39. everywhere from Rockhampton North.

  40. Wouldn't be surprised to see Captain Jack Black there.

  41. But the thing that I didn't like about North Queensland

  42. was the constant threat of cyclones.

  43. If you were here last night, Matt spilled the beans a little bit.

  44. We have cyclones in North Queensland.

  45. In the year before we got there,

  46. I was speaking to the Lucases about this last night,

  47. there was a big cyclone called Cyclone Yasi,

  48. and it was devastating.

  49. It was very destructive,

  50. and the locals were stinging from it.

  51. Everybody had gone out and bought a generator

  52. and got it wired to their house

  53. because the worst thing about cyclones in North Queensland

  54. is you have no air conditioning

  55. for like a couple of weeks, maybe three weeks afterwards,

  56. and that matters.

  57. If you haven't been there, that really matters.

  58. In a sense, you can get away with your health.

  59. They're pretty good at building houses and stuff now

  60. to protect people,

  61. but the lack of power

  62. and the humidity in the air

  63. after monsoonal rain is phenomenal.

  64. We've had people sleeping at our church

  65. just to get air conditioning

  66. because their area is out.

  67. Anyway, because that happened just before we got there,

  68. people in the community were stinging.

  69. They were really cyclone aware,

  70. and we moved up there,

  71. and we were freaking out

  72. because as you come into North Queensland,

  73. once you get into the cyclone area,

  74. they have these signs saying,

  75. you know, be cyclone aware

  76. when you're in North Queensland.

  77. So we were.

  78. We were vigilant.

  79. We made sure we had no rubbish or debris in our yard.

  80. We'd pull our trampoline, which was giant

  81. because we had five kids down

  82. every time there was any kind of warning of a cyclone.

  83. You're meant to have a cyclone pack.

  84. Our mayor, Mayor Jenny Hill,

  85. used to warn us every year on radio and TV

  86. that you have to have your cyclone pack ready.

  87. What goes in a cyclone pack?

  88. Tinned food,

  89. enough water for four days,

  90. and a torch,

  91. and a transistor radio

  92. so you can hear the communication.

  93. So we got all that together.

  94. But the thing was,

  95. year after year,

  96. there'd be cyclones out in the Coral Sea,

  97. and they'd track close to Townsville,

  98. but year after year,

  99. they would never hit.

  100. Only so many times you can pull

  101. an eight-metre trampoline down

  102. and then put it back together again.

  103. We got a bit apathetic.

  104. We started eating some of the food

  105. in the cyclone pack.

  106. We gave the torch to one of the kids for a camp.

  107. Despite all the talk,

  108. year after year,

  109. a cyclone just never came.

  110. And so, to be totally honest,

  111. we stopped caring.

  112. It seemed like the talk

  113. would just never become reality.

  114. Now, I don't know if you can tell

  115. where I'm going with this.

  116. As Peter writes his second letter

  117. to the church here,

  118. and we come in at chapter three,

  119. he's not writing to get us prepared

  120. for a cyclone,

  121. but he's writing to make sure

  122. we're prepared for the day of the Lord.

  123. Now, the people that Peter's writing to,

  124. they've come to faith in Jesus,

  125. and they've become Christians,

  126. and he just wants them to stay that way

  127. until the day of the Lord's return.

  128. A bit like what I asked you to pray

  129. for my kids yesterday.

  130. That's what Peter wants for these guys.

  131. It's been a long time

  132. since they came to Christ.

  133. He knows apathy is a big risk.

  134. He knows some people are saying

  135. the day of the Lord will never come,

  136. but it's a joke.

  137. So he's writing this

  138. to say,

  139. I assure you that it's not.

  140. God has always done what he says,

  141. and he will continue to.

  142. And I think the question for us

  143. as we read this section is,

  144. do you believe that to be the case?

  145. Do you believe there'll be a day of judgment?

  146. Does it seem real to you?

  147. Or does it seem distant?

  148. A joke?

  149. Let's turn to verse 1 now

  150. and remind ourselves that God always does

  151. what he says he will do.

  152. So I said last night,

  153. look for the theme of the word in this passage.

  154. I think as much as this passage

  155. is about the day of the Lord,

  156. it's about God doing what he says he will do.

  157. So Peter wants to wake his readers up

  158. with God's word.

  159. I'm reading from the NIV 2011 version.

  160. We have all kinds of versions at our church,

  161. and for somebody who's a bit OCD like me,

  162. it really kills me.

  163. I've only been there for 12 months,

  164. but I'm like,

  165. come on guys,

  166. let's get on the same.

  167. Anyway, I'm going NIV.

  168. Sorry about that.

  169. I'm now that person.

  170. Chapter,

  171. Amen.

  172. I'm speaking on,

  173. at another camp later in the year,

  174. on the doctrine of the word of God.

  175. And I just want to assure you,

  176. there is no perfect version.

  177. So just calm down over there, right?

  178. Anyway,

  179. Matt's the one who asked me to speak,

  180. in case you're wondering what I'm doing here.

  181. Peter wants to wake his readers up with God's word.

  182. Have a look from verse 1.

  183. Dear friends,

  184. this is now my second letter to you.

  185. I've written both of them,

  186. as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.

  187. So we're coming in partway through a letter.

  188. You guys have been looking at this in church.

  189. It's chapter 3 of 3.

  190. And Peter's just spent a bit of time warning his readers

  191. about false teachers in the previous chapter.

  192. But we're also,

  193. we're coming in partway through a relationship,

  194. just by starting this letter.

  195. He calls them dear friends in my translation,

  196. and he'll do that three times in this chapter.

  197. But the version that we heard read,

  198. it used the term beloved,

  199. which I think is actually more accurate,

  200. if I can give you that.

  201. Because the people Peter's writing to,

  202. they're beloved of him,

  203. but they're also beloved of God.

  204. They're believers.

  205. He's writing to Christian brothers and sisters

  206. that he's written to before,

  207. and he cares about.

  208. He has a relationship with these guys.

  209. He's got money in the game, right?

  210. He actually cares about them.

  211. He wants their relationship with God to last.

  212. And we find out his purpose in writing

  213. is to stimulate them to wholesome thinking.

  214. Or rather than stimulate,

  215. the word means to wake fully or arouse.

  216. You know, like,

  217. I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago,

  218. all four at once,

  219. and I had the twilight option.

  220. Go the general option,

  221. that's my advice to you.

  222. But in order for me to come out of that daze,

  223. I needed to be stimulated.

  224. I needed to be awakened.

  225. I needed to be fully aroused.

  226. And that's what Peter's saying

  227. that he's writing to them for.

  228. They might become fully aroused.

  229. He wants them to wake fully to wholesome thinking.

  230. And by that, we find out in verse two,

  231. he means he wants them to lock in

  232. to the things God said,

  233. to God's word,

  234. to the scriptures.

  235. So like a punch drunk boxer

  236. is aroused with sniffing salts

  237. when they've copped too many blows to the head.

  238. Paul wants these guys in their malaise,

  239. in their potential apathy,

  240. to wave the sniffing salts of God's word

  241. under their nose

  242. so they might be aroused.

  243. You get what he's wanting for them?

  244. In this context,

  245. the words that he's talking about

  246. are the words spoken in the past

  247. by the holy prophets.

  248. In the context of this letter,

  249. the words he's specifically talking about,

  250. though, that the holy prophets have spoken,

  251. are the words to do with the day of the Lord.

  252. You guys would have heard the term

  253. the day of the Lord before.

  254. The day of the Lord terminology

  255. has its origins in Amos,

  256. who's a prophet in the Old Testament.

  257. In chapter two, verse six or 16,

  258. one of those two,

  259. in the Old Testament,

  260. Amos speaks about the day of the Lord.

  261. 800 years before this letter's written.

  262. And then since Amos chapter two,

  263. the prophets have spoken about it many times,

  264. Malachi being the last,

  265. who spoke about the great and terrible day of the Lord.

  266. So this notion of the day of the Lord,

  267. a day of final judgment,

  268. it's big in the prophets.

  269. Peter wants them to be aroused

  270. from their spiritual apathy

  271. by recalling that God's actually spoken

  272. about the day of the Lord,

  273. about returning to judge

  274. for quite some time.

  275. But he's not just waving

  276. the prophets under their nose,

  277. he's waving the words given

  278. by the Lord Jesus

  279. through the apostles

  280. under their nose as well.

  281. That's the command to live for him

  282. in light of the coming

  283. of the day of the Lord.

  284. What I love about this,

  285. as somebody who was quite cynical

  286. of the Bible

  287. when I first started

  288. checking out Christianity,

  289. is that,

  290. notice in this verse,

  291. the apostle Peter,

  292. he's putting the words

  293. of his peers,

  294. the words of the other apostles,

  295. on the same level of authority

  296. as the prophets.

  297. Did you notice that?

  298. For him,

  299. it's all God's word.

  300. He's trying to be

  301. fully awakening these people

  302. with all of God's word.

  303. He wants them to be stimulated

  304. to understand the truth

  305. that judgment is coming.

  306. How do you wake yourself up

  307. when you're feeling

  308. a bit sleepy?

  309. I'm working at home

  310. quite often these days.

  311. We don't have an office

  312. where I work now.

  313. So I find it easy

  314. to get there.

  315. There are a lot of sleep options

  316. in my house.

  317. We set it up that way.

  318. But I can't afford to do that.

  319. I have to actually be

  320. at my desk concentrating writing.

  321. So to wake myself up,

  322. I'll get up

  323. and I'll go for a walk.

  324. I'll have coffee.

  325. Probably eight out of ten times,

  326. I'll go to the fridge

  327. and eat something,

  328. which is reflected

  329. in my stature at the moment.

  330. All those things,

  331. I'm just trying to do

  332. so that I kind of

  333. snap out of it,

  334. you know,

  335. come and sit back

  336. at my desk,

  337. feel refreshed.

  338. Peter's doing that

  339. with the word of God.

  340. He wants to stimulate them,

  341. wake them from their sleep.

  342. Now I want to ask you,

  343. are you spiritually sleepy?

  344. Or are you stimulated

  345. like somebody

  346. who's had sniffing salts

  347. waved under their nose?

  348. I mean,

  349. let's be honest.

  350. It's very hard

  351. not to be spiritually sleepy

  352. in our culture,

  353. in our society.

  354. Ninety percent

  355. of our country

  356. just gets on with life.

  357. You know,

  358. we work as though

  359. this world

  360. is all we'll ever experience.

  361. There's no tangible

  362. mention of God

  363. in the experience

  364. of most Australians

  365. everyday life.

  366. We focus a lot

  367. on work,

  368. on sport,

  369. on the kids.

  370. I mean,

  371. family's such an

  372. important thing,

  373. isn't it?

  374. It's very easy

  375. to sleep

  376. and to slumber.

  377. It's very easy

  378. to find yourself

  379. thinking,

  380. I'd be interested

  381. in that

  382. if I could be bothered,

  383. but I couldn't

  384. really be bothered

  385. because I've got

  386. so many other

  387. more important things

  388. going on in my life.

  389. There's about,

  390. I reckon,

  391. two or three years

  392. when you first come

  393. to Christ

  394. if you go through

  395. that process,

  396. if you haven't been

  397. raised in a Christian family

  398. where you might be

  399. passionate,

  400. where you might be

  401. filled with zeal

  402. like the psalmist

  403. going to the temple

  404. and then the malaise

  405. sets in

  406. and, you know,

  407. sometimes you have kids,

  408. sometimes you have sickness

  409. and it's all like

  410. little shots of anesthetic

  411. and before you know it,

  412. you can barely open

  413. your eyes

  414. to the reality

  415. that the day

  416. of the Lord

  417. is coming.

  418. Peter says here

  419. the key

  420. to that not happening,

  421. the key to being

  422. fully stimulated,

  423. the key to being

  424. fully awakened

  425. is to recall

  426. the things God said

  427. in the scriptures,

  428. especially

  429. about

  430. the day of judgment

  431. and how to live

  432. for him.

  433. If we wave that

  434. before our eyes,

  435. it'll be like

  436. a cold bath.

  437. it'll be like a,

  438. I guess if the world's

  439. like a slow drip

  440. anesthetic,

  441. the word of God

  442. will be like a slow drip

  443. adrenaline,

  444. just keeping our eyes

  445. open to the truth

  446. that the Lord

  447. is coming back.

  448. How do you go

  449. at recalling things

  450. God said

  451. in his word

  452. to keep yourself awake?

  453. Do you engage

  454. with it each day?

  455. If I said to you,

  456. what are you reading

  457. in your Bible

  458. at the moment

  459. over morning tea?

  460. I won't,

  461. don't worry.

  462. I know there's a lot

  463. of pressure

  464. associated with that,

  465. but I'm giving you

  466. time to think of something

  467. just in case I do.

  468. I've got five kids,

  469. I ask them that question,

  470. I can tell when they're lying.

  471. They just say

  472. what I'm not reading

  473. just in case I ask them

  474. about it.

  475. Do you engage

  476. with God's word?

  477. Do you remind yourself

  478. of the coming judgment?

  479. Do you remind yourself

  480. daily of how you ought

  481. to live in light

  482. of the reality

  483. that the Lord

  484. is in fact returning?

  485. I can say

  486. in my life

  487. there are lots of things

  488. I don't do

  489. that I should do

  490. as a Christian.

  491. Matt mentioned last night

  492. that I'm not

  493. some mythical creature.

  494. I don't know

  495. if people were thinking that,

  496. but I just want

  497. to let you know

  498. that there are lots

  499. of ways in my life

  500. that I fall short

  501. in my faith

  502. and there are lots

  503. of frustrations

  504. and there are lots

  505. of things that I've

  506. been battling with

  507. since I became a Christian

  508. that I feel like

  509. I've made zero progress on.

  510. But there is one thing

  511. that I do do,

  512. I'm not trying

  513. to flex here,

  514. but I try and read

  515. the Bible each day.

  516. Now I don't hit

  517. 100%, right?

  518. Yesterday morning

  519. I only read it

  520. with the kids,

  521. I didn't read my own,

  522. that's my day off,

  523. sometimes I get lax

  524. on that day, right?

  525. But I do generally

  526. try and read

  527. the Bible every day.

  528. And I'll tell you what,

  529. if I didn't,

  530. I would be

  531. passed out.

  532. I would have

  533. fallen away.

  534. Because the world

  535. is shooting me

  536. with anaesthetic

  537. every single day.

  538. And without

  539. the word of God

  540. I would be asleep

  541. to the reality

  542. that the Lord

  543. is in fact

  544. going to return.

  545. Every day

  546. I wake up twice,

  547. once with coffee,

  548. with Kath.

  549. So we've got this thing,

  550. when we were

  551. at Bible College,

  552. Peter Jensen's wife

  553. gave a talk

  554. to the Women's Chapel

  555. about how

  556. Peter made a coffee

  557. for her

  558. so that they could

  559. sit up and read

  560. the Bible each morning.

  561. And then Kath came

  562. and said,

  563. oh, Peter makes a coffee

  564. for his wife every morning,

  565. you should do that for me.

  566. So we started doing that

  567. and it was really helpful

  568. until I realised

  569. if I pretended

  570. I was asleep,

  571. Kath would get up

  572. and make the coffee.

  573. So that happens

  574. more often than not now.

  575. But we have the coffee

  576. to wake up

  577. and then we read

  578. the Bible

  579. and we wake up again

  580. to the spiritual reality.

  581. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  582. So I guess

  583. if there's application

  584. for the first point,

  585. it's are you

  586. waving the sniffing salts

  587. of God's word

  588. under your nose each day

  589. to arouse you

  590. from spiritual apathy?

  591. If you are not,

  592. wrestle yourself

  593. back into that habit.

  594. Pray to God

  595. that he'd help you

  596. to get back into it.

  597. Peter wants his readers

  598. to awaken

  599. by recalling God's word.

  600. But it's more than

  601. just spiritual apathy

  602. he's concerned about.

  603. There's spiritual attack

  604. as well

  605. from verse 3.

  606. There are people

  607. who ridicule

  608. what God says.

  609. Have a look

  610. from verse 3.

  611. It says,

  612. Above all,

  613. you must understand

  614. that in the last days

  615. scoffers will come

  616. scoffing

  617. and following

  618. their own evil desires.

  619. To scoff at something

  620. is to mock it,

  621. to ridicule it.

  622. Like last night

  623. when Matt said

  624. Jason's a Dragons fan,

  625. I could hear the scoffing

  626. permeate through the room.

  627. In the last days,

  628. that is the time

  629. between Jesus'

  630. first coming

  631. and the day of judgment,

  632. people will ridicule

  633. God's word.

  634. They'll ridicule

  635. the idea

  636. that there will ever

  637. be a day of judgment.

  638. They won't even

  639. look into it.

  640. They won't see

  641. its history.

  642. They'll just ridicule it.

  643. Like none of you guys

  644. here probably know,

  645. the Dragons have won

  646. 11 premierships in a row

  647. and they're quite a noble

  648. team to support.

  649. It's not a joke.

  650. There's actually

  651. a very reliable

  652. and anchored history

  653. to the scriptures.

  654. The most robust document

  655. that we have

  656. from ancient history.

  657. Yet people will mock it

  658. without regard

  659. for any truth

  660. and their lives

  661. won't be altered by it.

  662. In fact,

  663. they'll just follow

  664. the end of verse 3 says

  665. their own evil desires

  666. and why wouldn't they?

  667. Because they don't believe

  668. there'll be a judgment

  669. from God.

  670. So why wouldn't they?

  671. Look what they'll say

  672. in verse 4.

  673. Where is this coming

  674. he promised?

  675. So the question

  676. isn't about the coming

  677. the question is about

  678. the reliability

  679. of his promise,

  680. isn't it?

  681. Where is it?

  682. He's not coming

  683. is what they're saying.

  684. There'll be no great

  685. and dreadful day

  686. of the Lord.

  687. The Lord's not intervening.

  688. He spoke about it

  689. 800 years ago

  690. through Amos

  691. and nothing has changed

  692. since he first spoke

  693. about it.

  694. In fact,

  695. they say in verse 4,

  696. ever since our ancestors

  697. died,

  698. everything goes on

  699. as it has since

  700. the beginning of creation.

  701. Have you seen any signs

  702. of the Lord coming back?

  703. Like how long

  704. have you been

  705. on this earth for?

  706. Like 10 years?

  707. 20?

  708. 30?

  709. 100?

  710. Has anything changed

  711. they say?

  712. God's not intervening.

  713. He hasn't since

  714. he made the world.

  715. Which is interesting language

  716. because it suggests

  717. that people doing

  718. this mocking,

  719. they're not atheists,

  720. they believe in

  721. some kind of creator,

  722. not an interventionist one,

  723. but they're saying

  724. since the creator

  725. created the world,

  726. nothing's changed.

  727. According to them,

  728. the idea of a great

  729. and terrible day

  730. of the Lord

  731. is preposterous

  732. and their reason is

  733. because he's never

  734. intervened before.

  735. Why would we think

  736. he would in the future?

  737. Peter says to his readers,

  738. this is what you're up against.

  739. Not just your own apathy

  740. but this external attack

  741. as well.

  742. People saying

  743. God won't do

  744. what he says he'll do.

  745. A bit like the weatherman

  746. in North Queensland

  747. telling people in Townsville

  748. a cyclone's coming.

  749. What a joke, right?

  750. Do you know what

  751. the standard response

  752. to people in Townsville

  753. when a cyclone

  754. is tracking in

  755. in the Coral Sea is?

  756. The standard response is

  757. it'll probably drift south.

  758. That's what we say.

  759. Because it just never comes.

  760. It's a joke, right?

  761. So,

  762. I've just been through

  763. a basic course

  764. in Christianity

  765. back in Bathurst.

  766. It's called

  767. Christianity Explored.

  768. If you haven't heard of it,

  769. it's really good.

  770. I've been doing it

  771. for a long time now

  772. and they're just about

  773. to release an updated version

  774. on March the 12th.

  775. So,

  776. this current course

  777. that I'm doing

  778. is the last time

  779. I'll ever see Rico

  780. in his kind of

  781. early 2000s

  782. dress attire anyway.

  783. It's a great course.

  784. I love it.

  785. People have become

  786. Christian through it.

  787. Lots of people haven't

  788. but it's actually really,

  789. I found it really helpful

  790. to explain the gospel.

  791. Anyway,

  792. one of the questions

  793. we got to

  794. last Tuesday night

  795. was,

  796. do you believe in hell?

  797. Do you believe

  798. in eternal consequences

  799. for rejecting God?

  800. This is non-Christian

  801. people in the room.

  802. Do you believe

  803. there's a thing

  804. called hell?

  805. And,

  806. a lot of people

  807. don't.

  808. They actually

  809. genuinely

  810. don't believe

  811. that such a thing

  812. could exist.

  813. They've seen

  814. nothing in their

  815. day-to-day life

  816. to suggest

  817. there'll be judgement.

  818. Some of them

  819. will talk about

  820. Little Nicky,

  821. the Adam Sandler movie

  822. which makes a mockery

  823. of the whole thing.

  824. For those of us

  825. that are older,

  826. we'd have the

  827. Looney Tunes,

  828. right?

  829. That make a mockery

  830. of it.

  831. Do you think

  832. hell's real?

  833. Do you think

  834. there are eternal

  835. consequences

  836. for rejecting God?

  837. Even for Christians.

  838. Have you,

  839. and I've been up

  840. in Queensland

  841. for more than a decade

  842. so I'm a bit warped

  843. with my thinking.

  844. No offence.

  845. Your people

  846. are really strange.

  847. But there's a

  848. guy in Townsville

  849. who stands

  850. opposite

  851. Stockland

  852. and he waves

  853. a sign

  854. Stockland's

  855. the Myers

  856. and it says

  857. repent

  858. and believe

  859. for judgement

  860. is coming.

  861. And we talk

  862. about it at church

  863. and it's a bit

  864. of a joke,

  865. right?

  866. And we kind

  867. of feel sorry

  868. for the guy.

  869. You ever seen

  870. that sort of thing?

  871. Is it a joke though?

  872. It's not,

  873. is it?

  874. According to

  875. the word of God

  876. the Lord

  877. is coming back

  878. to judge

  879. the living

  880. and the dead.

  881. Peter says

  882. to his readers

  883. don't be,

  884. don't get caught

  885. up in the mockery

  886. because he

  887. ends this section

  888. by saying

  889. they haven't

  890. remembered

  891. that God

  892. always does

  893. what God

  894. says he'll do.

  895. Have a look

  896. from verse 5.

  897. But they

  898. deliberately

  899. forget

  900. that long

  901. ago

  902. by God's

  903. word

  904. the heavens

  905. came into

  906. being

  907. and the

  908. earth

  909. was formed

  910. out of

  911. water

  912. and by

  913. water.

  914. You know

  915. in this section

  916. Peter's,

  917. he's drawing

  918. our attention

  919. to the power

  920. of God's

  921. word.

  922. The faithfulness

  923. of God

  924. to follow

  925. through

  926. on what

  927. he says

  928. is evident

  929. everywhere

  930. since the

  931. history of

  932. creation.

  933. These mockers

  934. who talk

  935. about things

  936. not changing

  937. since the

  938. beginning

  939. of the

  940. world

  941. deliberately

  942. forget

  943. the very

  944. thing that

  945. they affirm

  946. in mocking

  947. it.

  948. That God

  949. created the

  950. world.

  951. He made

  952. it by

  953. speaking.

  954. He spoke

  955. and it

  956. happened.

  957. He separated

  958. the waters

  959. above from

  960. the waters

  961. below.

  962. Peter's

  963. reminding

  964. his readers

  965. that from

  966. the very

  967. beginning

  968. God

  969. speaks

  970. and it

  971. actually

  972. happens.

  973. In

  974. verse 6

  975. he reminds

  976. them of

  977. the great

  978. flood

  979. that we

  980. associate

  981. with

  982. Noah.

  983. God

  984. spoke

  985. back in

  986. Genesis

  987. 6.

  988. He

  989. intervened

  990. in

  991. creation.

  992. So this

  993. is God

  994. speaking

  995. again.

  996. But he

  997. spoke

  998. this time

  999. to judge

  1000. and guess

  1001. what?

  1002. It

  1003. happened.

  1004. God

  1005. spoke

  1006. about coming

  1007. judgment

  1008. and it

  1009. happened.

  1010. What Peter's

  1011. saying is

  1012. not only

  1013. when God

  1014. speaks

  1015. does it

  1016. happen

  1017. but when

  1018. God

  1019. speaks

  1020. about

  1021. judgment

  1022. it

  1023. happens.

  1024. And he

  1025. will do

  1026. it again.

  1027. He says

  1028. in verse 7

  1029. by the

  1030. same

  1031. word

  1032. that

  1033. reliable

  1034. faithful

  1035. powerful

  1036. word

  1037. of God

  1038. the

  1039. present

  1040. heavens

  1041. and

  1042. earth

  1043. by which

  1044. he

  1045. means

  1046. all of

  1047. creation

  1048. are

  1049. reserved

  1050. for

  1051. fire

  1052. the

  1053. refiner's

  1054. fire

  1055. where the

  1056. ungodly

  1057. will be

  1058. destroyed.

  1059. Don't

  1060. listen to

  1061. the

  1062. mockers

  1063. Peter

  1064. says.

  1065. They

  1066. forget

  1067. the

  1068. power

  1069. of

  1070. God's

  1071. word.

  1072. They

  1073. forget

  1074. that

  1075. God

  1076. always

  1077. does

  1078. what

  1079. he

  1080. says.

  1081. That's

  1082. why

  1083. Peter

  1084. says

  1085. you

  1086. need

  1087. to

  1088. wake

  1089. up.

  1090. You

  1091. know

  1092. the

  1093. 12

  1094. years

  1095. we

  1096. lived

  1097. in

  1098. Townsville

  1099. no

  1100. cyclones.

  1101. Such

  1102. a waste

  1103. of

  1104. time

  1105. pulling

  1106. the

  1107. trampoline

  1108. down.

  1109. Halfway

  1110. through

  1111. our

  1112. time

  1113. there

  1114. my

  1115. wife

  1116. put

  1117. a

  1118. chicken

  1119. coop

  1120. under

  1121. the

  1122. trampoline.

  1123. She

  1124. put

  1125. chicken

  1126. wire

  1127. around

  1128. the

  1129. edge

  1130. because

  1131. it's

  1132. 8

  1133. meters

  1134. wide.

  1135. It's

  1136. quite a

  1137. clever

  1138. use

  1139. of

  1140. time.

  1141. Traumatic

  1142. for the

  1143. chickens

  1144. when the

  1145. kids

  1146. are

  1147. on

  1148. the

  1149. trampoline.

  1150. Pulling

  1151. the

  1152. trampoline

  1153. down

  1154. just

  1155. became

  1156. a

  1157. whole

  1158. lot

  1159. more

  1160. chaotic

  1161. so I

  1162. stopped

  1163. bothering.

  1164. 12th

  1165. year

  1166. we

  1167. got

  1168. one.

  1169. fences

  1170. blew

  1171. down

  1172. trees

  1173. blew

  1174. down

  1175. trampolines

  1176. everywhere

  1177. loads

  1178. of

  1179. towns

  1180. will

  1181. have

  1182. no

  1183. power

  1184. for

  1185. days

  1186. in

  1187. the

  1188. humid

  1189. heat

  1190. of

  1191. summer

  1192. who

  1193. would

  1194. have

  1195. thought

  1196. weather

  1197. warnings

  1198. would

  1199. ever

  1200. come

  1201. true?

  1202. Well the

  1203. answer is

  1204. we all

  1205. should have

  1206. shouldn't

  1207. we?

  1208. Because

  1209. they have

  1210. before.

  1211. And if

  1212. we heed

  1213. the word

  1214. of the

  1215. weatherman

  1216. who we

  1217. all

  1218. acknowledge

  1219. is

  1220. fallible

  1221. how much

  1222. more ought

  1223. we heed

  1224. the word

  1225. of God

  1226. that is

  1227. infallible?

  1228. the

  1229. God

  1230. who

  1231. always

  1232. does

  1233. what

  1234. he

  1235. says

  1236. even

  1237. with

  1238. judgment.

  1239. How

  1240. foolish

  1241. not

  1242. to.

  1243. You

  1244. know

  1245. there's

  1246. a time

  1247. in the

  1248. book

  1249. of Acts

  1250. where

  1251. the

  1252. apostle

  1253. Paul

  1254. is

  1255. speaking

  1256. to

  1257. a

  1258. bunch

  1259. of

  1260. non

  1261. Christians

  1262. in

  1263. the

  1264. public

  1265. square

  1266. it's

  1267. in

  1268. Acts

  1269. 17

  1270. and

  1271. he

  1272. says

  1273. this

  1274. bear

  1275. with

  1276. me

  1277. here

  1278. because

  1279. you'll

  1280. be

  1281. thinking

  1282. what's

  1283. this

  1284. all

  1285. about

  1286. I

  1287. thought

  1288. we're

  1289. just

  1290. about

  1291. finished

  1292. we are

  1293. don't

  1294. worry

  1295. this

  1296. is

  1297. Acts

  1298. Paul

  1299. says

  1300. this

  1301. now

  1302. God

  1303. commands

  1304. all

  1305. people

  1306. everywhere

  1307. to

  1308. repent

  1309. for

  1310. he

  1311. has

  1312. set

  1313. a

  1314. day

  1315. when

  1316. he

  1317. will

  1318. judge

  1319. the

  1320. world

  1321. with

  1322. justice

  1323. by

  1324. the

  1325. man

  1326. he

  1327. has

  1328. appointed

  1329. he's

  1330. given

  1331. proof

  1332. of

  1333. this

  1334. to

  1335. everyone

  1336. by

  1337. raising

  1338. him

  1339. from

  1340. the

  1341. dead

  1342. let's

  1343. just

  1344. unpack

  1345. what

  1346. that's

  1347. talking

  1348. about

  1349. that's

  1350. Acts

    Acts 17:30

  1351. 17

  1352. verse

  1353. 30

  1354. and

  1355. 31

  1356. you

  1357. know

  1358. Jesus

  1359. said

  1360. he'd

  1361. be

  1362. crucified

  1363. and

  1364. rise

  1365. from

  1366. the

  1367. dead

  1368. at

  1369. least

  1370. three

  1371. times

  1372. you

  1373. can

  1374. read

  1375. it

  1376. in

  1377. Mark's

  1378. gospel

  1379. and

  1380. you

  1381. know

  1382. what

  1383. he

  1384. was

  1385. crucified

  1386. he

  1387. died

  1388. Mark

  1389. tells us

  1390. he died

  1391. as a

  1392. ransom

  1393. for

  1394. many

  1395. he

  1396. died

  1397. to

  1398. make

  1399. it

  1400. possible

  1401. for

  1402. sinners

  1403. like

  1404. me

  1405. to

  1406. be

  1407. reconciled

  1408. to

  1409. God

  1410. he

  1411. took

  1412. the

  1413. penalty

  1414. of

  1415. sin

  1416. he

  1417. took

  1418. God's

  1419. wrath

  1420. on

  1421. himself

  1422. on

  1423. the

  1424. cross

  1425. wiping

  1426. me

  1427. completely

  1428. clean

  1429. paying

  1430. in

  1431. full

  1432. and

  1433. finally

  1434. for

  1435. sin

  1436. on the

  1437. cross

  1438. we see

  1439. God

  1440. following

  1441. through

  1442. on his

  1443. promise

  1444. to judge

  1445. sin

  1446. I don't

  1447. know if

  1448. you've

  1449. ever thought

  1450. about it

  1451. like that

  1452. before

  1453. but on the

  1454. cross we

  1455. see God

  1456. following

  1457. through on

  1458. his promise

  1459. to judge

  1460. sin

  1461. because

  1462. on the

  1463. cross

  1464. God's

  1465. judgment

  1466. fell

  1467. fully

  1468. and

  1469. finally

  1470. on the

  1471. sin

  1472. of his

  1473. people

  1474. for the

  1475. sin

  1476. of his

  1477. people

  1478. on his

  1479. son

  1480. God

  1481. intervened

  1482. in human

  1483. history

  1484. despite what

  1485. the mockers

  1486. say

  1487. to deal

  1488. with human

  1489. sin

  1490. God

  1491. said he

  1492. would do

  1493. it

  1494. and he

  1495. did it

  1496. but

  1497. Jesus

  1498. also

  1499. said

  1500. three

  1501. times

  1502. he

  1503. would

  1504. rise

  1505. and he

  1506. did

  1507. and according

  1508. to the

  1509. apostle

  1510. Paul

  1511. that is

  1512. proof

  1513. that people

  1514. can be

  1515. raised

  1516. it's

  1517. proof

  1518. that we'll

  1519. all be

  1520. raised

  1521. and it's

  1522. proof

  1523. that the

  1524. whole world

  1525. will be

  1526. judged

  1527. with justice

  1528. by the

  1529. Lord

  1530. Jesus

  1531. the

  1532. resurrection

  1533. of Jesus

  1534. is proof

  1535. that God

  1536. will do

  1537. and has

  1538. done

  1539. what he

  1540. said

  1541. he will

  1542. do

  1543. one day

  1544. the risen

  1545. Lord

  1546. Jesus

  1547. we will

  1548. all stand

  1549. before him

  1550. as judge

  1551. so

  1552. Paul

  1553. says here

  1554. in Acts

  1555. it's time

  1556. to repent

  1557. it's time

  1558. to wake

  1559. up

  1560. it's time

  1561. to stop

  1562. ignoring

  1563. God

  1564. it's time

  1565. to turn

  1566. back to

  1567. him

  1568. it's time

  1569. to accept

  1570. his offer

  1571. of forgiveness

  1572. to fall

  1573. on your

  1574. knees

  1575. and to

  1576. live

  1577. with him

  1578. as Lord

  1579. now having

  1580. proven

  1581. judgment

  1582. is coming

  1583. into the

  1584. world

  1585. the apostle

  1586. Paul says

  1587. it's time

  1588. to repent

  1589. and Peter's

  1590. readers

  1591. back in

  1592. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1593. chapter 3

  1594. you know

  1595. what's

  1596. great

  1597. they seem

  1598. to have

  1599. done

  1600. that

  1601. they are

  1602. his beloved

  1603. brothers and

  1604. sisters in

  1605. Christ

  1606. like many of you

  1607. here in this

  1608. room

  1609. but even

  1610. though they're

  1611. already saved

  1612. he says

  1613. I'm writing

  1614. to wake

  1615. you up

  1616. I want

  1617. you to

  1618. wake up

  1619. recall

  1620. God's

  1621. words

  1622. judgment

  1623. is coming

  1624. God

  1625. always

  1626. does

  1627. what

  1628. God

  1629. says

  1630. he

  1631. will

  1632. do

  1633. let's

  1634. pray

  1635. heavenly

  1636. father

  1637. we thank

  1638. you so

  1639. much

  1640. for

  1641. revealing

  1642. your

  1643. plan

  1644. for

  1645. salvation

  1646. through

  1647. the

  1648. Lord

  1649. Jesus

  1650. Christ

  1651. to

  1652. us

  1653. in

  1654. your

  1655. word

  1656. father

  1657. thank you

  1658. that you've

  1659. brought

  1660. many of us

  1661. here in

  1662. this room

  1663. to faith

  1664. in the

  1665. Lord

  1666. Jesus

  1667. thank you

  1668. for the

  1669. freedom

  1670. of knowing

  1671. our sin

  1672. has been

  1673. paid for

  1674. that we've

  1675. been

  1676. washed

  1677. father

  1678. thank you

  1679. for the

  1680. Lord

  1681. Jesus

  1682. Christ

  1683. but father

  1684. help us

  1685. to

  1686. to open

  1687. our eyes

  1688. to wake

  1689. up to

  1690. the

  1691. reality

  1692. that one

  1693. day

  1694. the

  1695. Lord

  1696. Jesus

  1697. will

  1698. return

  1699. and

  1700. will

  1701. stand

  1702. before

  1703. him

  1704. as

  1705. judge

  1706. father

  1707. help us

  1708. to

  1709. live

  1710. in

  1711. light

  1712. of

  1713. that

  1714. day

  1715. in

  1716. the

  1717. face

  1718. of

  1719. the

  1720. scoffing

  1721. in

  1722. the

  1723. face

  1724. of

  1725. our

  1726. own

  1727. slumber

  1728. father

  1729. help us

  1730. to

  1731. cling

  1732. to

  1733. your

  1734. word

  1735. that

  1736. always

  1737. comes

  1738. true

  1739. father

  1740. entrenching

  1741. us a

  1742. habit

  1743. to

  1744. drip

  1745. feed

  1746. ourselves

  1747. with

  1748. it

  1749. every

  1750. day

  1751. that

  1752. we

  1753. might

  1754. remember

  1755. the

  1756. truth

  1757. of

  1758. the

  1759. great

  1760. and

  1761. terrible

  1762. day

  1763. of

  1764. the

  1765. Lord

  1766. from

  1767. which

  1768. we've

  1769. been

  1770. spared

  1771. through

  1772. the

  1773. Lord

  1774. Jesus

  1775. Christ

  1776. we pray

  1777. this in

  1778. his name

  1779. Amen

  1780. Thank you.
