  1. Isn't it fun that as a church that doesn't have a strict liturgy, we have a very strict order in which we do things.

  2. !

  3. Well, good morning. My name is Martin and we will this morning be looking at Jeremiah chapters 2 to 4.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  4. I hope I haven't bitten off more than we can chew. We'll see. You can be the judge of that by the end of the talk this morning.

  5. But you might like to start doing there, Jeremiah chapter 2 to 4.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  6. I will say a few words by way of introduction first, but let me commit this time to the Lord in prayer.

  7. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the scriptures through which we get to know you as our God, our Father,

  8. through which we get to know our Saviour Jesus, that we might be reconciled to you.

  9. We pray that you would guide us in our meditations on your word this morning.

  10. And we pray that as we hear, we would respond from the heart. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. The Apostle John concludes his first epistle with the words,

  12. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  13. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  14. Now, it's a strange way to end the letter.

  15. The first epistle of John, if you're familiar with it, you may know it's full of the themes of God's love,

  16. of faith, of the assurance of salvation, of Jesus' command that we love one another,

  17. the assurance that we're God's children, loved by the Father.

  18. In fact, in the previous sentence, the penultimate verse in the first epistle of John,

  19. it talks about knowing God, about our union with God the Father through being united with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  20. It talks about eternal life, the eternal life that's found in Jesus.

  21. And then, abruptly, we have this final sentence,

  22. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  23. It's, in fact, the only use of the word idols in the book of 1 John.

  24. We're not studying 1 John this morning, but anyway, this is just the introduction.

  25. It's the only use of the word idols in the book of 1 John.

  26. It seems to come from nowhere and leave nowhere.

  27. And yet, John chose to end his letter, this message about faith and love and life,

  28. with this short, stark warning about idolatry.

  29. Actually, it may hearken back to something John had said earlier in his letter.

  30. In 1 John 2, verse 15 and 16, he says,

    1 John 2:15

  31. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  32. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  33. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life,

  34. is not from the Father, but is from the world.

  35. If John has that in mind when he says, keep yourselves from idols,

  36. then the idolatry John is thinking about is not just the worship of Jupiter or Mars or Athena or Artemis or Isis or any of the pantheon of ancient gods.

  37. John recognized that idolatry could take a more insidious form,

  38. that is, a love of the world and the things in the world.

  39. And when he speaks that way, he's not talking about the legitimate enjoyment of God's good creation.

  40. He's talking about any inordinate, covetous, misshapen love that displaces God.

  41. And John says,

  42. Even though you know the Father and the Son, even though you have eternal life,

  43. even though you're beloved children of God,

  44. even though you have victory over the world through believing in Jesus,

  45. even though all those things are true,

  46. yet heed this warning,

  47. keep yourselves from idols.

  48. In other words,

  49. we who believe in Jesus are not immune to the seduction and deception of idolatry.

  50. And I wonder, like, if the Apostle John were to come here to Australia in the 21st century

  51. and cast his appraising eye over our society,

  52. what would he see?

  53. Now, if he would appraise our society with its boasts and its greed and its obsessions

  54. and its addictions and its fixations,

  55. I think he would no doubt perceive the same danger for us in the 21st century

  56. as he did for his first readers in the 1st century.

  57. And he would say to us,

  58. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  59. In 626 BC, in the 13th year of the reign of King Josiah,

  60. God called Jeremiah as a prophet to the nations

  61. and especially to his people Judah, the nation of Judah.

  62. And as his first assignment,

  63. God sent Jeremiah to Jerusalem,

  64. to the city which was the home of the Lord's temple,

  65. the home of the king's palace,

  66. with a message for the people,

  67. a message that could be summed up,

  68. why have you forsaken me to follow worthless idols?

  69. And we're going to listen to part of that message in a moment as Beck reads it for us.

  70. As we listen to this part of the message,

  71. we're going to read the,

  72. Beck will read the first half of chapter 2.

  73. I want you to bear in mind the Apostle John's exhortation,

  74. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  75. And listen to the way God speaks to Judah here,

  76. the way he drives home to Judah,

  77. that it is absolute folly,

  78. utter folly,

  79. to forsake the Lord

  80. in order to follow idols.

  81. So Beck,

  82. I'm not sure where about,

  83. there you are.

  84. Beck is going to come out and read

  85. Jeremiah chapter 2 verses 1 to 19.

    Jeremiah 2:1–19

  86. And think about how do we see it's utter folly

  87. to forsake the Lord.

  88. Thanks, Beck.

  89. Okay, starting at verse 1 of chapter 2.

  90. The word of the Lord came to me,

  91. saying,

  92. Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem,

  93. thus says the Lord.

  94. I remember the devotion of your youth,

  95. your love as a bride,

  96. how you followed me in the wilderness,

  97. in a land not sown.

  98. Israel was holy to the Lord,

  99. the first fruits of his harvest.

  100. All who ate of it incurred guilt,

  101. disaster came upon them,

  102. declares the Lord.

  103. Hear the word of the Lord,

  104. O house of Jacob,

  105. and all the clans of the house of Israel.

  106. Thus says the Lord.

  107. What wrong did your fathers find in me,

  108. that they went far from me,

  109. and went after worthlessness,

  110. and became worthless?

  111. They did not say,

  112. Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt,

  113. who led us in the wilderness,

  114. in a land of deserts and pits,

  115. in a land of drought and deep darkness,

  116. in a land that none passes through,

  117. where no man dwells?

  118. And I brought you into a plentiful land,

  119. to enjoy its fruits and its good things.

  120. But when you came in,

  121. you defiled my land,

  122. and made my heritage an abomination.

  123. The priests did not say,

  124. Where is the Lord?

  125. Those who handle the law did not know me.

  126. The shepherds transgressed against me.

  127. The prophets prophesied by Baal,

  128. and went after things that do not profit.

  129. Therefore, I still contend with you,

  130. declares the Lord,

  131. and with your children's children,

  132. I will contend.

  133. For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see,

  134. or send to Kedar and examine with care,

  135. see if there has been such a thing.

  136. Has a nation changed its gods,

  137. even though they are no gods?

  138. But my people have changed their glory,

  139. for that which does not profit.

  140. Be appalled, O heavens, at this.

  141. Be shocked.

  142. Be utterly desolate, declares the Lord.

  143. For my people have committed two evils.

  144. They have forsaken me,

  145. the fountain of living mortars,

  146. and hewed out cisterns for themselves,

  147. broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  148. Is Israel a slave?

  149. Is he a home-born servant?

  150. Why then has he become a prey?

  151. The lions have roared against him.

  152. They have roared loudly.

  153. They have made his land a waste.

  154. His cities are in ruin,

  155. without inhabitant.

  156. Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tapanis

  157. have shaved the crown of your head.

  158. Have you not brought this upon yourself

  159. by forsaking the Lord your God

  160. when he led you in the way?

  161. And now, what do you gain by going to Egypt

  162. to drink the waters of the Nile?

  163. Or what do you gain by going to Assyria

  164. to drink the waters of the Euphrates?

  165. Your evil will chastise you,

  166. and your apostasy will reprove you.

  167. Know and see that it is evil and bitter

  168. for you to forsake the Lord your God.

  169. The fear of me is not in you,

  170. declares the Lord God of hosts.

  171. This is the word of the Lord.

  172. Thanks, Peg.

  173. Okay, well, let's consider these verses,

  174. this section.

  175. The first three verses then of chapter two,

  176. we have like this brief introduction,

  177. which is a nostalgic recollection

  178. of Israel's past,

  179. the honeymoon period of Israel's relationship with God.

  180. God remembers and he reminds his people

  181. there in verse two of the devotion of your youth

  182. and your love as a bride.

  183. They're following after him in the wilderness.

  184. And how he, in verse three, cherished them.

  185. They were precious to him.

  186. They were wholly set apart for him

  187. and protected by him.

  188. Now, you could read this

  189. and raise an eyebrow and say,

  190. was Israel's relationship with God

  191. ever really like this?

  192. It is, you might think,

  193. a rose-coloured glasses perspective

  194. on even Israel's beginning.

  195. And if you were to read through the book of Exodus

  196. and the book of Numbers,

  197. you know, those years Israel spent in the wilderness,

  198. there are plenty of spectacular failures of Israel

  199. in those years.

  200. So what we have here in verses one to three

  201. is this idealised presentation of the past.

  202. What Israel were made to be

  203. and what they were supposed to be?

  204. Maybe, you see, precise historical accuracy,

  205. I don't think, is the point here

  206. in these first three verses.

  207. Rather, it's not so much about how good Israel once were.

  208. The point of this chapter is about how far they had fallen

  209. from what they ought to have been,

  210. what they could have been,

  211. what they were made to be.

  212. Verse five,

  213. what wrong did your fathers find in me

  214. that they went far from me

  215. and went after worthlessness

  216. and became worthless?

  217. Now, in the montage of metaphors that follow,

  218. God makes the case

  219. that it is utter folly to turn away from him.

  220. It's madness to turn away from God.

  221. And the same reasons that God gave Judah

  222. for why it's folly to turn away from him

  223. are just as applicable for us today.

  224. Why it'd be folly for us to turn away from the Lord.

  225. I've got three reasons from those verses

  226. that Beck just read for us.

  227. First, from verses five to eight,

  228. it's utter folly to forsake the Lord

  229. after all the good he has done for you.

  230. It's utter folly to forsake the Lord

  231. after all the good he's done for you.

  232. How could Israel forget this?

  233. Verse six,

  234. they did not say,

  235. where is the Lord?

  236. How could they forget,

  237. verse six,

  238. the God who brought them up

  239. out of the land of Egypt?

  240. How could they forget,

  241. again in verse six,

  242. the God who led them in the wilderness?

  243. How could they forget,

  244. verse seven,

  245. the God who brought them into a plentiful land

  246. to enjoy its fruits and its good things?

  247. Now maybe forget isn't even really the right word here.

  248. Maybe they didn't exactly forget.

  249. They just lost interest.

  250. Even the leaders who'd been charged

  251. with reminding the people of the love of God,

  252. even they lost interest.

  253. Verse eight,

  254. the priest did not say,

  255. where is the Lord?

  256. Those who handle the Lord did not know me.

  257. The shepherds transgressed against me.

  258. The prophets prophesied by Baal

  259. and went after things that do not profit.

  260. I mean, how can this be?

  261. How can you forget God,

  262. forsake God,

  263. drift away from God,

  264. just lose interest in God

  265. when he's been so good to you?

  266. I mean, if that's true for Israel,

  267. isn't it even more true for us?

  268. God forgave our sins.

  269. God gave us his Holy Spirit.

  270. God made us his own.

  271. He adopted us as his children.

  272. He will raise us up in glory.

  273. He promises us eternity.

  274. And now he protects us by faith as we wait.

  275. He gifts us for service.

  276. He places us in a community of people.

  277. He teaches us love and humility

  278. and self-control and righteousness.

  279. Hasn't God been good?

  280. To us?

  281. How could we just lose interest in God?

  282. It makes no sense.

  283. I mean, what would we replace God with?

  284. The God who's been so good to us.

  285. Do you see what God says about it?

  286. Like whatever we might replace God with?

  287. Verse four,

  288. they went after worthlessness

  289. and became worthless.

  290. That word worthlessness there

  291. is the same word that's used

  292. in the book of Ecclesiastes,

  293. the Hebrew word hebel,

  294. which means,

  295. in that expression in the book of Ecclesiastes,

  296. vanity of vanities,

  297. or everything is meaningless.

  298. It just means something that's vain,

  299. it's empty,

  300. it's vapor,

  301. it's nothing.

  302. They went far from

  303. the living,

  304. true,

  305. good God

  306. and went after

  307. nothing,

  308. worthlessness.

  309. How could we do that?

  310. Verse eight,

  311. they went after things that,

  312. end of verse eight,

  313. that do not profit,

  314. that give them nothing,

  315. that,

  316. from which no good comes.

  317. empty idols.

  318. Why?

  319. It makes no sense.

  320. There was a period last year

  321. when I was becoming addicted

  322. to a game on my phone.

  323. Some of you are laughing.

  324. Some of you are,

  325. I don't know,

  326. maybe looking sideways

  327. or looking down

  328. or something nervously.

  329. But anyway,

  330. I was becoming addicted

  331. to a game on my phone

  332. and Jen,

  333. my wife,

  334. she was patient with me

  335. but not altogether silent

  336. which was probably good.

  337. But as I reflect back on that,

  338. like what good

  339. did it give me,

  340. my attachment

  341. to this game on my phone?

  342. Like it just made me

  343. more distracted,

  344. more irritable.

  345. I was reading less,

  346. I was thinking about God less

  347. and I didn't even enjoy it.

  348. It was worthless.

  349. It didn't profit.

  350. And the more I went after it,

  351. the more worthless I became.

  352. Why would we forsake God

  353. who brought us up

  354. from sin and death,

  355. who leads us in the wilderness,

  356. who will bring us

  357. into a plentiful land

  358. to fill us with good things?

  359. Why would we forsake God?

  360. For that which is worthless

  361. and does not profit.

  362. It makes no sense.

  363. Secondly,

  364. verse 9 to 13,

  365. it's utter folly

  366. to forsake the Lord,

  367. not only,

  368. as we saw firstly,

  369. because of the good

  370. he's done for us,

  371. but in verse 9 to 13,

  372. it's utter folly

  373. to forsake the Lord

  374. because he himself

  375. is our incomparable glory.

  376. He himself

  377. is our incomparable glory.

  378. The best thing

  379. about being saved by God

  380. and belonging to God

  381. and knowing God

  382. is God himself.

  383. Look at verse 10.

  384. For cross to the coast

  385. of Cyprus and see,

  386. or send to Kedar

  387. and examine with care

  388. and see if there has been any,

  389. if there has been such a thing.

  390. Has a nation changed its gods?

  391. I mean,

  392. the other nations

  393. don't go around

  394. changing their gods.

  395. Jeremiah says,

  396. even though there are no gods,

  397. even though they're fake

  398. and they're nothing

  399. and they're empty,

  400. the nations don't change their gods.

  401. But my people have changed,

  402. see what God says here,

  403. verse 11,

  404. my people have changed

  405. their glory

  406. for that which does not profit.

  407. When Israel gave up

  408. on their God,

  409. the God,

  410. when Israel gave up on God,

  411. they gave up their glory

  412. for nothing.

  413. The Lord was Israel's glory.

  414. How much more is he our glory?

  415. Of course,

  416. we can't fully grasp

  417. the glory of God,

  418. but we get a sense,

  419. a glimpse of the glory of God

  420. when we behold his works.

  421. See,

  422. consider God's work of creation.

  423. The heavens declare

  424. the glory of God,

  425. Psalm 19 says,

  426. and modern science

  427. has in no way

  428. diminished their testimony.

  429. You know,

  430. an ancient Israelite

  431. might look up

  432. at the expansive beauty

  433. of the night sky,

  434. which we can't see

  435. because we live in a city

  436. and it's obscured

  437. by all the lights,

  438. city lights,

  439. but an ancient Israelite

  440. might look up

  441. at the expansive beauty

  442. of the night sky

  443. and marvel

  444. at the glory of God.

  445. But do we marvel

  446. any less

  447. with telescopes

  448. and satellites

  449. peering into the depths

  450. of the universe?

  451. There are apparently

  452. somewhere between

  453. 100 and 400 billion stars

  454. in the Milky Way galaxy.

  455. So let's take

  456. the lower figure,

  457. 100 billion.

  458. There are 8.3 billion people

  459. on the planet Earth.

  460. That means

  461. in our galaxy alone

  462. there are at least

  463. 12 times as many stars

  464. as there are people.

  465. I mean,

  466. if we were to claim stars,

  467. just divide them among,

  468. we would have 12 stars each.

  469. In the Milky Way galaxy.

  470. I mean,

  471. some of you think,

  472. you know,

  473. will you ever be able

  474. to afford to buy a home

  475. or something?

  476. But you know,

  477. there's 12 stars out there

  478. for you

  479. if you can get to them.

  480. But that's just one galaxy.

  481. I mean,

  482. apparently,

  483. I don't know

  484. how on Earth

  485. astrophysicists

  486. come to this figure,

  487. but apparently

  488. there are perhaps

  489. 2 trillion galaxies

  490. in the observable universe.

  491. 2,000 billion galaxies.

  492. That's,

  493. you can not only have

  494. your 12 stars

  495. in the Milky Way galaxy,

  496. you can have

  497. 240 galaxies

  498. in the observable universe.

  499. I mean,

  500. consider God's work

  501. of creation

  502. and he spoke

  503. and it came into being,

  504. isn't the Lord

  505. glorious?

  506. Consider God's work

  507. of redemption.

  508. The God

  509. who created

  510. all this.

  511. The God

  512. who is,

  513. let me read some

  514. words from the

  515. Baptist Confession

  516. of Faith,

  517. which is just

  518. summarizing Scripture.

  519. The God

  520. who is

  521. infinite

  522. in being

  523. and perfection,

  524. immutable,

  525. immense,

  526. eternal,

  527. incomprehensible,

  528. almighty,

  529. every way,

  530. infinite,

  531. most holy,

  532. most wise,

  533. most free.

  534. Again,

  535. also from the

  536. Baptist Confession,

  537. he is alone

  538. the fountain

  539. of all being,

  540. of whom,

  541. through whom,

  542. and to whom

  543. are all things

  544. and he hath

  545. most sovereign

  546. dominion

  547. over all creatures

  548. to do by them,

  549. for them,

  550. or upon them,

  551. whatsoever

  552. he himself

  553. pleases.

  554. Eternal,

  555. almighty,

  556. all powerful,

  557. dominion

  558. over all,

  559. the fount

  560. of all being

  561. and yet

  562. this same

  563. God,

  564. this very same

  565. God in the

  566. person of his

  567. son entered

  568. into his

  569. creation,

  570. subjected

  571. himself

  572. not only

  573. to become

  574. a man,

  575. but to

  576. suffer at

  577. the hands

  578. of men,

  579. to suffer

  580. the malice

  581. and cruelty

  582. of men,

  583. whom he

  584. himself had

  585. made.

  586. the God

  587. who is

  588. grieved

  589. by our

  590. sin

  591. shed the

  592. tears

  593. that should

  594. have been

  595. ours.

  596. The God

  597. whose anger

  598. is aroused

  599. by our

  600. sin

  601. drank the

  602. cup of

  603. wrath

  604. that should

  605. have been

  606. ours.

  607. The God

  608. whom we

  609. had forsaken

  610. was himself

  611. forsaken

  612. for us.

  613. we have

  614. seen his

  615. glory,

  616. the glory

  617. of the

  618. one and

  619. only

  620. son

  621. who

  622. came

  623. from

  624. the

  625. father

  626. full of

  627. grace

  628. and

  629. truth.

  630. You know,

  631. someone will

  632. be,

  633. you know,

  634. chuffed,

  635. a bit

  636. pleased with

  637. themselves

  638. when they

  639. know a

  640. reliable

  641. mechanic

  642. or plumber

  643. that they

  644. can recommend

  645. to their

  646. friends.

  647. You know,

  648. hard to

  649. find.

  650. we know

  651. the living

  652. God,

  653. immortal

  654. and

  655. invisible.

  656. He is

  657. ours.

  658. The vast

  659. heavens

  660. themselves,

  661. God says,

  662. the vast

  663. heavens which

  664. obey every

  665. command of

  666. their creator,

  667. they shudder

  668. at our

  669. idolatry.

  670. Verse 12,

  671. be appalled,

  672. O heavens,

  673. at this.

  674. Be shocked,

  675. be utterly

  676. desolate,

  677. declares the

  678. Lord,

  679. for my

  680. people have

  681. committed

  682. two evils.

  683. They have

  684. forsaken

  685. me,

  686. the fountain

  687. of living

  688. waters,

  689. and hewed

  690. out cisterns

  691. for themselves,

  692. broken cisterns

  693. that can hold

  694. no water.

  695. It's utter

  696. folly to

  697. forsake the

  698. Lord,

  699. for he

  700. himself

  701. is our

  702. supreme

  703. glory.

  704. Thirdly,

  705. verse 14

  706. to 19,

  707. it's utter

  708. folly to

  709. forsake the

  710. Lord,

  711. because to

  712. do so

  713. leads to

  714. our own

  715. ruin.

  716. Verse 14,

  717. is Israel

  718. a slave?

  719. Is he a

  720. home-born

  721. servant?

  722. Why then

  723. has he

  724. become a

  725. prey?

  726. The lions

  727. have roared

  728. against him,

  729. they have

  730. roared loudly,

  731. they have

  732. made his

  733. land a

  734. waste,

  735. his cities

  736. are a

  737. ruin

  738. without

  739. inhabitant.

  740. Israel

  741. was not

  742. redeemed

  743. from Egypt

  744. only to be

  745. enslaved

  746. again.

  747. They were

  748. not given

  749. the plentiful

  750. land,

  751. only to have

  752. it plundered

  753. by the

  754. nations

  755. surrounding

  756. them,

  757. and yet

  758. that is

  759. what had

  760. happened.

  761. And God's

  762. people had

  763. no one to

  764. blame but

  765. themselves.

  766. Verse 17,

  767. have you

  768. not brought

  769. this upon

  770. yourself by

  771. forsaking the

  772. Lord your

  773. God when he

  774. led you in

  775. the way?

  776. Verse 19,

  777. your evil

  778. will chastise

  779. you,

  780. and your

  781. apostasy

  782. will reprove

  783. you.

  784. Know and

  785. see that it

  786. is evil

  787. and bitter

  788. for you

  789. to forsake

  790. the Lord

  791. your God.

  792. The fear

  793. of me

  794. is not

  795. in you,

  796. declares

  797. the Lord

  798. God of

  799. hosts.

  800. See that it

  801. is evil

  802. and bitter

  803. to forsake

  804. the Lord.

  805. Forsaking

  806. the Lord

  807. is evil,

  808. it's wicked,

  809. it's treacherous.

  810. You know,

  811. Aussies tend

  812. to think

  813. that,

  814. you know,

  815. our lives

  816. are our

  817. own,

  818. we just

  819. belong to

  820. ourselves,

  821. and,

  822. you know,

  823. maybe we'd

  824. be doing

  825. God a

  826. huge favour

  827. if we

  828. were to

  829. give him

  830. a wave

  831. or a nod

  832. every now

  833. and then.

  834. But of

  835. course,

  836. that's

  837. deception.

  838. We belong

  839. to him,

  840. he owns

  841. us,

  842. we owe

  843. him our

  844. worship,

  845. our love,

  846. our obedience,

  847. our devotion,

  848. our trust.

  849. God is not

  850. a stranger

  851. in the

  852. universe,

  853. he is the

  854. owner of

  855. the universe,

  856. he is our

  857. maker,

  858. our master,

  859. our Lord

  860. and our

  861. God,

  862. our Father,

  863. and it

  864. is evil

  865. to forsake

  866. him.

  867. But also,

  868. it's bitter

  869. to forsake

  870. him.

  871. For that

  872. way leads

  873. only to

  874. desolation

  875. and death

  876. and misery

  877. and ruin.

  878. There's no

  879. life apart

  880. from the

  881. fountain,

  882. there's no

  883. joy apart

  884. from his

  885. blessedness,

  886. there's no

  887. peace apart

  888. from his

  889. love.

  890. What

  891. utter

  892. folly

  893. to forsake

  894. the Lord

  895. our God.

  896. The rest

  897. of chapter

  898. two

  899. continues in

  900. the same

  901. vein,

  902. we won't

  903. look at

  904. it.

  905. I had

  906. a few

  907. verses

  908. I was

  909. going to

  910. show you

  911. but we're

  912. shortish on

  913. time so we'll

  914. skip over

  915. those.

  916. But it

  917. continues in

  918. the same

  919. vein.

  920. Can you

  921. see,

  922. brothers and

  923. sisters,

  924. what utter

  925. folly it is

  926. to forsake

  927. the Lord

  928. after all

  929. the good

  930. he's done

  931. for us

  932. because he

  933. himself is

  934. our incomparable

  935. glory when

  936. forsaking him

  937. leads only to

  938. misery and

  939. ruin.

  940. Exchanging

  941. the fountain

  942. of living

  943. water for

  944. broken

  945. cisterns is

  946. never a

  947. good deal.

  948. I have

  949. a friend

  950. who forsook

  951. the Lord

  952. for a

  953. relationship

  954. with a

  955. non-believer.

  956. Another

  957. friend who

  958. forsook the

  959. Lord out

  960. of intellectual

  961. pride and

  962. in order to

  963. fit in with

  964. the world.

  965. Another

  966. friend who

  967. forsook the

  968. Lord as

  969. academic and

  970. professional

  971. accomplishment

  972. gradually

  973. squeezed out

  974. his love

  975. for God.

  976. God

  977. and what

  978. did any

  979. of them

  980. gain by

  981. forsaking

  982. the Lord?

  983. Nothing.

  984. And yet

  985. aren't we

  986. prone to

  987. the same

  988. defection?

  989. Little

  990. children

  991. keep

  992. yourselves

  993. from idols.

  994. and what

  995. are we

  996. tempted to

  997. go after

  998. worthlessness?

  999. How often

  1000. do we

  1001. exchange our

  1002. glory for

  1003. that which

  1004. does not

  1005. profit?

  1006. How often

  1007. are our

  1008. hearts

  1009. captivated by

  1010. trivial things

  1011. rather than

  1012. the grandeur

  1013. and splendor

  1014. of God?

  1015. Jeremiah 2

  1016. has many

  1017. metaphors for

  1018. Israel's

  1019. relationship

  1020. with God

  1021. but there's

  1022. one central

  1023. recurring

  1024. metaphor

  1025. throughout

  1026. these chapters

  1027. and that

  1028. is of

  1029. Israel as

  1030. an unfaithful

  1031. bride

  1032. estranged

  1033. from her

  1034. husband.

  1035. And by

  1036. the time

  1037. we get

  1038. to chapter

  1039. 3 God

  1040. asks the

  1041. question

  1042. have

  1043. Israel

  1044. and Judah

  1045. passed

  1046. the point

  1047. of no

  1048. return?

  1049. To look

  1050. just briefly

  1051. at a few

  1052. verses here

  1053. in chapter

  1054. 3 verse

  1055. 1

  1056. if a man

  1057. divorces

  1058. his wife

  1059. and she

  1060. goes from

  1061. him and

  1062. becomes

  1063. another

  1064. man's

  1065. wife

  1066. that's

  1067. what Israel

  1068. had done

  1069. left the

  1070. Lord and

  1071. married

  1072. someone else

  1073. gone after

  1074. other gods

  1075. if a man

  1076. divorces

  1077. his wife

  1078. and she

  1079. goes from

  1080. him

  1081. and becomes

  1082. another

  1083. man's

  1084. wife

  1085. will he

  1086. return to

  1087. her?

  1088. Would not

  1089. that land

  1090. be greatly

  1091. polluted?

  1092. You have

  1093. played the

  1094. whore with

  1095. many lovers

  1096. and would

  1097. you return

  1098. to me

  1099. declares

  1100. the Lord?

  1101. See what

  1102. God's saying

  1103. here?

  1104. He's saying

  1105. is it too

  1106. late?

  1107. God

  1108. would he

  1109. return?

  1110. God won't

  1111. return to

  1112. them.

  1113. They won't

  1114. return to

  1115. him.

  1116. Have they

  1117. passed the

  1118. point of

  1119. no return?

  1120. God

  1121. says

  1122. even if

  1123. you

  1124. make a

  1125. pretense

  1126. of

  1127. returning

  1128. to

  1129. me

  1130. it

  1131. won't

  1132. be

  1133. sincere.

  1134. Verse

  1135. 4

  1136. Have you

  1137. not

  1138. just

  1139. now

  1140. called

  1141. to

  1142. me

  1143. my

  1144. father?

  1145. You're

  1146. the

  1147. friend

  1148. of

  1149. my

  1150. youth.

  1151. Will

  1152. he

  1153. be

  1154. angry

  1155. forever?

  1156. Will

  1157. he

  1158. be

  1159. indignant

  1160. to

  1161. the

  1162. end?

  1163. Behold

  1164. you've

  1165. spoken

  1166. but you

  1167. have done

  1168. all

  1169. the

  1170. evil

  1171. that

  1172. you

  1173. could.

  1174. Was

  1175. it

  1176. too

  1177. late

  1178. for

  1179. Israel

  1180. and

  1181. Judah?

  1182. Does

  1183. idolatry

  1184. push

  1185. us

  1186. past

  1187. the

  1188. point

  1189. of

  1190. no

  1191. return?

  1192. By

  1193. all

  1194. rights

  1195. it

  1196. does.

  1197. We

  1198. have

  1199. no

  1200. power

  1201. to

  1202. return

  1203. to

  1204. God.

  1205. We

  1206. have

  1207. no

  1208. right

  1209. to

  1210. expect

  1211. that

  1212. he

  1213. should

  1214. return

  1215. to

  1216. us.

  1217. Such

  1218. is

  1219. the

  1220. treachery

  1221. of

  1222. idolatry.

  1223. And

  1224. yet

  1225. and

  1226. yet

  1227. in

  1228. the

  1229. rest

  1230. of

  1231. chapter

  1232. three

  1233. we

  1234. hear

  1235. the

  1236. Lord

  1237. calling

  1238. to

  1239. Israel

  1240. again

  1241. and

  1242. again.

  1243. Chapter

  1244. three

  1245. verse

  1246. twelve

  1247. return

  1248. faithless

  1249. Israel.

  1250. Three

  1251. verse

  1252. fourteen

  1253. return

  1254. O

  1255. faithless

  1256. children.

  1257. Three

  1258. verse

  1259. twenty

  1260. two

  1261. return

  1262. O

  1263. faithless

  1264. sons.

  1265. Chapter

  1266. four

  1267. verse

  1268. one

  1269. return

  1270. O

  1271. Israel.

  1272. The

  1273. word

  1274. faithless

  1275. in

  1276. each

  1277. of

  1278. those

  1279. verses

  1280. in

  1281. chapter

  1282. three

  1283. twelve

  1284. fourteen

  1285. and

  1286. twenty

  1287. two

  1288. is

  1289. a

  1290. word

  1291. which

  1292. means

  1293. those

  1294. who

  1295. have

  1296. turned

  1297. those

  1298. who

  1299. have

  1300. turned

  1301. back

  1302. those

  1303. who

  1304. have

  1305. turned

  1306. away.

  1307. So

  1308. God

  1309. is

  1310. saying

  1311. you

  1312. who

  1313. have

  1314. turned

  1315. away

  1316. turn

  1317. back

  1318. to

  1319. me.

  1320. You

  1321. have

  1322. turned

  1323. away

  1324. Israel

  1325. my

  1326. sons

  1327. return

  1328. now

  1329. there's

  1330. a

  1331. complexity

  1332. to

  1333. Jeremiah

  1334. chapter

  1335. three

  1336. that I

  1337. don't

  1338. want

  1339. to

  1340. ignore

  1341. but

  1342. also

  1343. which

  1344. I

  1345. don't

  1346. want

  1347. to

  1348. distract

  1349. us.

  1350. So

  1351. let's

  1352. make

  1353. a

  1354. deal

  1355. I

  1356. want

  1357. to

  1358. make

  1359. a

  1360. deal

  1361. with

  1362. you

  1363. I

  1364. will

  1365. do

  1366. my

  1367. best

  1368. to

  1369. explain

  1370. it

  1371. as

  1372. briefly

  1373. as

  1374. I

  1375. can

  1376. and

  1377. I

  1378. want

  1379. you

  1380. to

  1381. do

  1382. your

  1383. best

  1384. to

  1385. be

  1386. patient

  1387. with

  1388. me

  1389. as

  1390. I

  1391. do

  1392. try

  1393. and

  1394. explain

  1395. it.

  1396. Okay

  1397. we'll

  1398. get

  1399. to

  1400. the

  1401. main

  1402. point

  1403. soon

  1404. I

  1405. realise

  1406. we

  1407. haven't

  1408. read

  1409. out

  1410. chapter

  1411. three

  1412. I'm

  1413. not

  1414. going

  1415. to

  1416. read

  1417. it

  1418. out

  1419. in

  1420. full

  1421. I'll

  1422. show

  1423. you

  1424. some

  1425. verses

  1426. that

  1427. you

  1428. need

  1429. to

  1430. see

  1431. here's

  1432. the

  1433. complexity

  1434. right

  1435. you

  1436. see

  1437. there

  1438. in

  1439. chapter

  1440. three

  1441. verse

  1442. six

  1443. the

  1444. first

  1445. it's

  1446. the

  1447. Lord

  1448. said

  1449. to

  1450. me

  1451. in

  1452. the

  1453. days

  1454. of

  1455. King

  1456. Josiah

  1457. now

  1458. we'll

  1459. come

  1460. back

  1461. to

  1462. that

  1463. but

  1464. you

  1465. might

  1466. remember

  1467. Josiah

  1468. is

  1469. the

  1470. king

  1471. who

  1472. was

  1473. king

  1474. when

  1475. Jeremiah

  1476. was

  1477. called

  1478. as

  1479. a

  1480. prophet

  1481. the

  1482. first

  1483. of

  1484. the

  1485. five

  1486. kings

  1487. that

  1488. Jeremiah

  1489. would

  1490. outlast

  1491. and so

  1492. this

  1493. is

  1494. early

  1495. days

  1496. in

  1497. Jeremiah's

  1498. ministry

  1499. we'll

  1500. come

  1501. back

  1502. to

  1503. King

  1504. Josiah

  1505. but

  1506. then

  1507. in

  1508. verses

  1509. six

  1510. to

  1511. ten

  1512. we

  1513. have

  1514. this

  1515. extended

  1516. metaphor

  1517. of

  1518. two

  1519. sisters

  1520. there

  1521. is

  1522. in

  1523. verse

  1524. six

  1525. one

  1526. sister

  1527. whom

  1528. God

  1529. calls

  1530. faithless

  1531. Israel

  1532. and

  1533. the

  1534. second

  1535. sister

  1536. whom

  1537. God

  1538. calls

  1539. in

  1540. verse

  1541. eight

  1542. treacherous

  1543. Judah

  1544. Israel

  1545. and

  1546. Judah

  1547. two

  1548. sisters

  1549. now

  1550. the

  1551. background

  1552. to that

  1553. is the

  1554. history

  1555. of

  1556. Israel

  1557. around

  1558. around

  1559. 1000

  1560. BC

  1561. David

  1562. King

  1563. David

  1564. was

  1565. king

  1566. over

  1567. all

  1568. of

  1569. Israel

  1570. and

  1571. as

  1572. was

  1573. his

  1574. son

  1575. Solomon

  1576. but

  1577. after

  1578. Solomon's

  1579. death

  1580. and this

  1581. is

  1582. some

  1583. 300

  1584. years

  1585. before

  1586. Jeremiah

  1587. after

  1588. Solomon's

  1589. death

  1590. Israel

  1591. split

  1592. in

  1593. two

  1594. the

  1595. northern

  1596. part

  1597. the

  1598. northern

  1599. kingdom

  1600. confusingly

  1601. continued

  1602. to be

  1603. called

  1604. Israel

  1605. and the

  1606. southern

  1607. kingdom

  1608. was

  1609. called

  1610. Judah

  1611. so

  1612. when we

  1613. have

  1614. this

  1615. extended

  1616. metaphor

  1617. of

  1618. these

  1619. two

  1620. sisters

  1621. faithless

  1622. Israel

  1623. treacherous

  1624. Judah

  1625. it's

  1626. talking

  1627. about

  1628. the

  1629. northern

  1630. kingdom

  1631. and the

  1632. southern

  1633. kingdom

  1634. after

  1635. Israel

  1636. split

  1637. in

  1638. two

  1639. what

  1640. happened

  1641. to

  1642. Israel

  1643. well

  1644. verse

  1645. six

  1646. to

  1647. eight

  1648. have

  1649. you

  1650. seen

  1651. what

  1652. she

  1653. did

  1654. that

  1655. faithless

  1656. one

  1657. Israel

  1658. how

  1659. she

  1660. went

  1661. up

  1662. on

  1663. every

  1664. high

  1665. hill

  1666. and

  1667. under

  1668. every

  1669. green

  1670. tree

  1671. and

  1672. there

  1673. played

  1674. the

  1675. whore

  1676. and I

  1677. thought

  1678. after

  1679. she

  1680. has

  1681. done

  1682. all

  1683. this

  1684. she'll

  1685. return

  1686. to

  1687. me

  1688. but

  1689. she

  1690. did

  1691. not

  1692. return

  1693. and her

  1694. treacherous

  1695. sister

  1696. Judah

  1697. saw

  1698. it

  1699. she

  1700. saw

  1701. that

  1702. for

  1703. all

  1704. the

  1705. adulteries

  1706. of that

  1707. faithless

  1708. one

  1709. Israel

  1710. I

  1711. had

  1712. sent

  1713. her

  1714. away

  1715. with

  1716. a

  1717. decree

  1718. of

  1719. divorce

  1720. Israel

  1721. was

  1722. faithless

  1723. in

  1724. Jeremiah

  1725. day

  1726. Israel

  1727. was

  1728. overthrown

  1729. by the

  1730. Assyrian

  1731. empire

  1732. the

  1733. people

  1734. of

  1735. Israel

  1736. were

  1737. deported

  1738. and

  1739. Israel

  1740. the

  1741. northern

  1742. kingdom

  1743. ceased

  1744. to

  1745. exist

  1746. as a

  1747. geopolitical

  1748. entity

  1749. other

  1750. people

  1751. were

  1752. moved

  1753. into

  1754. the

  1755. land

  1756. it

  1757. was

  1758. effectively

  1759. wiped

  1760. out

  1761. as a

  1762. nation

  1763. but

  1764. what

  1765. about

  1766. Judah

  1767. the

  1768. southern

  1769. kingdom

  1770. where

  1771. Jeremiah

  1772. lived

  1773. well

  1774. verse

  1775. 8

  1776. you know

  1777. she'd

  1778. seen

  1779. what

  1780. happened

  1781. to

  1782. Israel

  1783. and

  1784. yet

  1785. her

  1786. treacherous

  1787. sister

  1788. Judah

  1789. did

  1790. not

  1791. fear

  1792. but

  1793. she

  1794. too

  1795. went

  1796. and

  1797. played

  1798. the

  1799. whore

  1800. committing

  1801. adultery

  1802. Indeed

  1803. God

  1804. goes on

  1805. to make

  1806. the

  1807. shocking

  1808. claim

  1809. in

  1810. verse

  1811. 11

  1812. faithless

  1813. Israel

  1814. has

  1815. shown

  1816. herself

  1817. more

  1818. righteous

  1819. than

  1820. treacherous

  1821. Judah

  1822. the

  1823. people

  1824. that

  1825. had

  1826. already

  1827. been

  1828. wiped

  1829. out

  1830. by

  1831. the

  1832. Assyrians

  1833. God

  1834. said

  1835. are

  1836. better

  1837. than

  1838. you

  1839. who

  1840. remain

  1841. from

  1842. verse

  1843. 12

  1844. to

  1845. the

  1846. end

  1847. of

  1848. the

  1849. chapter

  1850. God

  1851. continues

  1852. to

  1853. rebuke

  1854. Judah

  1855. but

  1856. he

  1857. does

  1858. it

  1859. in

  1860. a

  1861. kind

  1862. of

  1863. strange

  1864. way

  1865. verse

  1866. 12

  1867. God

  1868. says

  1869. to

  1870. Jeremiah

  1871. go

  1872. and

  1873. proclaim

  1874. these

  1875. words

  1876. toward

  1877. the

  1878. north

  1879. and

  1880. say

  1881. return

  1882. faithless

  1883. Israel

  1884. declares

  1885. so

  1886. proclaim

  1887. these

  1888. words

  1889. towards

  1890. the

  1891. north

  1892. so

  1893. from

  1894. Jerusalem

  1895. from

  1896. Judah

  1897. Jeremiah

  1898. is

  1899. facing

  1900. north

  1901. toward

  1902. Israel

  1903. and

  1904. proclaiming

  1905. God's

  1906. message

  1907. to

  1908. Israel

  1909. that

  1910. northern

  1911. kingdom

  1912. that's

  1913. no longer

  1914. there

  1915. you with

  1916. me

  1917. but

  1918. he's

  1919. doing

  1920. it

  1921. in

  1922. Jerusalem

  1923. so

  1924. that

  1925. actually

  1926. the

  1927. people

  1928. who

  1929. are

  1930. listening

  1931. to

  1932. this

  1933. proclamation

  1934. to

  1935. Israel

  1936. are

  1937. Judah

  1938. for

  1939. hearing

  1940. the

  1941. message

  1942. the

  1943. prophecy

  1944. that

  1945. Jeremiah

  1946. is

  1947. saying

  1948. to

  1949. Israel

  1950. and

  1951. it

  1952. and

  1953. what

  1954. God

  1955. says

  1956. to

  1957. Israel

  1958. is

  1959. return

  1960. it

  1961. would

  1962. be

  1963. a bit

  1964. like

  1965. to

  1966. give

  1967. you

  1968. a

  1969. trivial

  1970. illustration

  1971. like

  1972. if

  1973. I

  1974. had

  1975. sent

  1976. my

  1977. eldest

  1978. daughter

  1979. Hannah

  1980. to

  1981. her

  1982. room

  1983. for

  1984. answering

  1985. back

  1986. and

  1987. being

  1988. disobedient

  1989. perish

  1990. the

  1991. thought

  1992. and

  1993. you

  1994. know

  1995. I've

  1996. sent

  1997. her

  1998. off

  1999. to

  2000. her

  2001. room

  2002. and

  2003. then

  2004. Evie

  2005. my

  2006. second

  2007. daughter

  2008. has

  2009. seen

  2010. that

  2011. take

  2012. place

  2013. and

  2014. then

  2015. she

  2016. starts

  2017. behaving

  2018. even

  2019. worse

  2020. and

  2021. so

  2022. I

  2023. say

  2024. right

  2025. Evie

  2026. you

  2027. go

  2028. to

  2029. your

  2030. room

  2031. Hannah

  2032. you

  2033. can

  2034. come

  2035. back

  2036. you

  2037. know

  2038. that's

  2039. kind

  2040. of

  2041. what's

  2042. going

  2043. on

  2044. here

  2045. in

  2046. chapter

  2047. three

  2048. but

  2049. the

  2050. message

  2051. that

  2052. Judah

  2053. hear

  2054. God

  2055. proclaiming

  2056. to

  2057. the

  2058. north

  2059. Jeremiah

  2060. proclaiming

  2061. to

  2062. the

  2063. north

  2064. is

  2065. magnificent

  2066. again

  2067. and

  2068. again

  2069. the

  2070. Lord

  2071. calls

  2072. faithless

  2073. Israel

  2074. to

  2075. return

  2076. now

  2077. we

  2078. can't

  2079. look

  2080. at

  2081. all

  2082. the

  2083. details

  2084. but

  2085. I

  2086. want

  2087. to

  2088. point

  2089. out

  2090. the

  2091. main

  2092. features

  2093. first

  2094. the

  2095. basis

  2096. of

  2097. God's

  2098. call

  2099. to

  2100. Israel

  2101. to

  2102. return

  2103. is

  2104. God's

  2105. own

  2106. character

  2107. look at

  2108. verse

  2109. 12

  2110. return

  2111. faithless

  2112. Israel

  2113. declares

  2114. the

  2115. Lord

  2116. I

  2117. will

  2118. not

  2119. look

  2120. on

  2121. you

  2122. in

  2123. anger

  2124. for

  2125. I

  2126. am

  2127. merciful

  2128. declares

  2129. the

  2130. Lord

  2131. the

  2132. basis

  2133. of the

  2134. call

  2135. to

  2136. return

  2137. is

  2138. the

  2139. mercy

  2140. of

  2141. God

  2142. his

  2143. grace

  2144. his

  2145. faithful

  2146. love

  2953. was

  2954. dramatically

  2955. proclaimed

  2956. in

  2957. Judah

  2958. to

  2959. the

  2960. north

  2961. towards

  2962. Israel

  2963. but

  2964. it

  2965. was

  2966. heard

  2967. in

  2968. Judah

  2969. and

  2970. in

  2971. Jeremiah's

  2972. day

  2973. the

  2974. point

  2975. was

  2976. Judah

  2977. you've

  2978. heard

  2979. God's

  2980. promise

  2981. and

  2982. call

  2983. and

  2984. invitation

  2985. to

  2986. Israel

  2987. what

  2988. about

  2989. you

  2990. Judah

  2991. and

  2992. Jerusalem

  2993. what

  2994. are

  2995. you

  2996. going

  2997. to

  2998. do

  2999. chapter

  3000. 4

  3001. verse

  3002. 3

  3003. for

  3004. thus

  3005. says

  3006. the

  3007. Lord

  3008. to

  3009. the

  3010. men

  3011. of

  3012. Judah

  3013. and

  3014. Jerusalem

  3015. break

  3016. up

  3017. your

  3018. fallow

  3019. ground

  3020. and

  3021. sow

  3022. not

  3023. among

  3024. thorns

  3025. circumcise

  3026. yourself

  3027. to the

  3028. Lord

  3029. remove

  3030. the

  3031. foreskin

  3032. of

  3033. your

  3034. hearts

  3035. O

  3036. men

  3037. of

  3038. Judah

  3039. and

  3040. inhabitants

  3041. !

  3042. of

  3043. Jerusalem

  3044. lest

  3045. my

  3046. wrath

  3047. go

  3048. forth

  3049. like

  3050. a

  3051. fire

  3052. and

  3053. burn

  3054. with

  3055. none

  3056. to

  3057. quench it

  3058. Jerusalem

  3059. what

  3060. will

  3061. you

  3062. do

  3063. will

  3064. you

  3065. return

  3066. we

  3067. saw

  3068. that

  3069. this

  3070. word

  3071. of

  3072. the

  3073. Lord

  3074. came

  3075. in

  3076. the

  3077. days

  3078. of

  3079. King

  3080. Josiah

  3081. and

  3082. you

  3083. may be

  3084. familiar

  3085. with

  3086. the

  3087. reign

  3088. of

  3089. King

  3090. Josiah

  3091. or

  3092. you

  3093. may

  3094. not

  3095. but

  3096. the

  3097. thing

  3098. about

  3099. King

  3100. Josiah

  3101. is

  3102. he

  3103. kind

  3104. of

  3105. stands

  3106. out

  3107. in

  3108. the

  3109. line

  3110. of

  3111. Judah's

  3112. kings

  3113. as

  3114. a

  3115. bit

  3116. of

  3117. a

  3118. exception

  3119. a

  3120. bit

  3121. of

  3122. a

  3123. shining

  3124. light

  3125. and

  3126. at

  3127. the

  3128. very

  3129. time

  3130. as

  3131. Jeremiah

  3132. was

  3133. proclaiming

  3134. this

  3135. word

  3136. of

  3137. the

  3138. Lord

  3139. the

  3140. king

  3141. was

  3142. also

  3143. attempting

  3144. to lead

  3145. a

  3146. national

  3147. spiritual

  3148. revival

  3149. six

  3150. years

  3151. before

  3152. Jeremiah

  3153. was

  3154. commissioned

  3155. we're

  3156. told

  3157. in

  3158. second

  3159. chronicles

  3160. Josiah

  3161. himself

  3162. began

  3163. to

  3164. seek

  3165. the

  3166. Lord

  3167. two

  3168. years

  3169. before

  3170. Jeremiah

  3171. was

  3172. commissioned

  3173. Josiah

  3174. began

  3175. to purge

  3176. Judah

  3177. of

  3178. idols

  3179. four

  3180. years

  3181. after

  3182. Jeremiah's

  3183. commission

  3184. Josiah

  3185. began

  3186. to

  3187. repair

  3188. the

  3189. temple

  3190. and

  3191. found

  3192. the

  3193. book

  3194. of

  3195. the

  3196. law

  3197. and

  3198. restored

  3199. some

  3200. of

  3201. the

  3202. religious

  3203. calendar

  3204. of

  3205. Judah

  3206. the

  3207. question

  3208. for

  3209. Judah

  3210. though

  3211. was

  3212. as

  3213. both

  3214. king

  3215. and

  3216. prophet

  3217. sought

  3218. to

  3219. lead

  3220. the

  3221. nation

  3222. in

  3223. returning

  3224. to

  3225. the

  3226. Lord

  3227. the

  3228. question

  3229. for

  3230. Judah

  3231. was

  3232. how

  3233. wide

  3234. and

  3235. how

  3236. deep

  3237. would

  3238. this

  3239. return

  3240. be

  3241. how

  3242. wide

  3243. would

  3244. it

  3245. go

  3246. would

  3247. it

  3248. extend

  3249. from

  3250. the

  3251. king

  3252. throughout

  3253. the

  3254. kingdom

  3255. how

  3256. long

  3257. would

  3258. it

  3259. last

  3260. would

  3261. it

  3262. continue

  3263. into

  3264. the

  3265. next

  3266. generation

  3267. how

  3268. deep

  3269. would

  3270. it

  3271. be

  3272. would

  3273. it

  3274. go

  3275. to

  3276. the

  3277. heart

  3278. !

  3279. tense

  3280. conflicted

  3281. atmosphere

  3282. of

  3283. our

  3284. society

  3285. political

  3286. atmosphere

  3287. of

  3288. our

  3289. society

  3290. at

  3291. present

  3292. there

  3293. is

  3294. among

  3295. many

  3296. a

  3297. sense

  3298. of

  3299. nostalgia

  3300. there

  3301. is

  3302. in

  3303. our

  3304. society

  3305. in

  3306. some

  3307. corners

  3308. a

  3309. resurgent

  3310. conservatism

  3311. even

  3312. at

  3313. some

  3314. places

  3315. a

  3316. form

  3317. of

  3318. Christian

  3319. nationalism

  3320. we're

  3321. seeing

  3322. the

  3323. rise

  3324. in the

  3325. profile

  3326. of

  3327. a

  3328. political

  3329. party

  3330. like

  3331. One

  3332. Nation

  3333. there

  3334. is

  3335. among

  3336. many

  3337. in

  3338. our

  3339. country

  3340. a

  3341. pining

  3342. for

  3343. liberal

  3344. democracy

  3345. for

  3346. western

  3347. ideals

  3348. for

  3349. traditional

  3350. family

  3351. values

  3352. for

  3353. cohesive

  3354. community

  3355. life

  3356. with

  3357. shared

  3358. values

  3359. and a

  3360. sense

  3361. that that

  3362. might be

  3363. being

  3364. eroded

  3365. and so

  3366. there are

  3367. calls

  3368. in our

  3369. society

  3370. to

  3371. return

  3372. to

  3373. the

  3374. way

  3375. things

  3376. once

  3377. were

  3378. but

  3379. look at

  3380. what

  3381. God

  3382. says

  3383. he

  3384. says

  3385. in

  3386. verse

  3387. one

  3388. if

  3389. you

  3390. return

  3391. O

  3392. Israel

  3393. to

  3394. me

  3395. you

  3396. should

  3397. return

  3398. what

  3399. God

  3400. calls

  3401. us

  3402. to

  3403. is

  3404. not

  3405. to

  3406. return

  3407. to

  3408. conservatism

  3409. or

  3410. to

  3411. the

  3412. traditions

  3413. of

  3414. western

  3415. civilization

  3416. or

  3417. to

  3418. religion

  3419. he

  3420. calls

  3421. us

  3422. to

  3423. return

  3424. to

  3425. him

  3426. to

  3427. him

  3428. to

  3429. the

  3430. Lord

  3431. our

  3432. God

  3433. and

  3434. we

  3435. who

  3436. still

  3437. need

  3438. to

  3439. hear

  3440. the

  3441. warning

  3442. little

  3443. children

  3444. keep

  3445. yourselves

  3446. from

  3447. idols

  3448. we

  3449. also

  3450. need

  3451. to

  3452. hear

  3453. the

  3454. call

  3455. if

  3456. you

  3457. return

  3458. then

  3459. to

  3460. me

  3461. you

  3462. must

  3463. return

  3464. we

  3465. brothers

  3466. and

  3467. sisters

  3468. need

  3469. to

  3470. be

  3471. people

  3472. who

  3473. constantly

  3474. turn

  3475. to

  3476. the

  3477. Lord

  3478. to

  3479. him

  3480. daily

  3481. weekly

  3482. continually

  3483. even

  3484. habitually

  3485. but

  3486. from

  3487. the

  3488. heart

  3489. together

  3490. individually

  3491. turning

  3492. to

  3493. the

  3494. Lord

  3495. our

  3496. God

  3497. for

  3498. he

  3499. is

  3500. good

  3501. he

  3502. has

  3503. been

  3504. good

  3505. to

  3506. us

  3507. and

  3508. he

  3509. is

  3510. our

  3511. supreme

  3512. unrivaled

  3513. glory

  3514. if

  3515. you

  3516. return

  3517. return

  3518. to

  3519. me

  3520. will

  3521. you

  3522. pray

  3523. with

  3524. me

  3525. heavenly

  3526. father

  3527. you

  3528. have

  3529. been

  3530. so

  3531. good

  3550. !

  3551. no

  3553. or

  3554. praise

  3555. are
