  1. So, Isaiah 53, we'll be starting at verse 7.

  2. And we're speaking about, it's speaking about Jesus, of course.

  3. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,

  4. and like a sheep that before its shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

  5. By oppression and judgment he was taken away, and as for his generation who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living,

  6. stricken for the transgression of my people.

  7. And they made his grave with the wicked and with the rich man in his death,

  8. although he had done no violence and there was no deceit in his mouth.

  9. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him.

  10. He has put him to grief.

  11. When his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring.

  12. He shall prolong his days.

  13. The will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

  14. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied.

  15. By his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous,

  16. and he shall bear their iniquities.

  17. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,

  18. and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,

  19. because he poured out his soul to death,

  20. and he was numbered with the transgressors.

  21. Yet he bore the sin of many,

  22. and makes intercession for the transgressors.

  23. So now from John 19 from verse 38.

  24. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea,

  25. who was a disciple of Jesus,

  26. but secretly for the fears of the Jews,

  27. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus,

  28. and Pilate gave him permission.

  29. So he came and took away his body.

  30. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  31. came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

  32. about 75 pounds in weight.

  33. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  34. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  35. Now in the place where he was crucified,

  36. there was a garden,

  37. and in the garden a new tomb,

  38. in which no one had yet been laid.

  39. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  40. since the tomb was close at hand,

  41. they laid Jesus there.

  42. Well, on a Sunday morning,

  43. exactly 1,993 years ago,

  44. the 5th of April, A.D. 33,

  45. the body of Jesus disappeared from his tomb.

  46. And Jesus' first disciples spent that day trying to understand what had happened,

  47. trying to piece together what had occurred from the clues that they saw.

  48. Now, of course, we know what happened,

  49. because it is the foundational event of Christian faith.

  50. We know why the early Christians came to refer to Sunday as the Lord's Day.

  51. We know why churches have traditionally gathered on Sundays for corporate worship.

  52. There's no way really for us to recapture the confusion and the surprise of that day.

  53. But the eyewitness account we're going to follow in the Gospel of John,

  54. it doesn't give us the explanation up front.

  55. It invites us into sort of follow the footsteps of the disciples.

  56. It takes us through that day as it unfolded for the disciples.

  57. Now, you all know the saying that seeing is believing.

  58. And yet Christian faith involves believing what we haven't seen.

  59. How can we do that?

  60. How can we believe something that we haven't seen?

  61. Now, of course, you could answer that question,

  62. how can we believe something we haven't seen?

  63. You could answer that question by saying that in reality,

  64. that's true of any event in history.

  65. There are all kinds of things we believe, even though we haven't seen them.

  66. Any historical event, we haven't witnessed ourselves.

  67. That's how history works.

  68. In history, you need other reasons for believing than seeing.

  69. And often what you need are reports of those who did see eyewitness accounts.

  70. Well, this morning, we're going to hear the eyewitness accounts of those who were there,

  71. those who did get to see, of the eyewitness accounts of Peter, John and Mary,

  72. which could almost be a folk band.

  73. In particular, it's the account of John, the author of John's Gospel,

  74. but he's with Peter, and twice in this account,

  75. Mary immediately relates her own testimony to John and the other disciples.

  76. And so John incorporates Mary's testimony within his own testimony.

  77. And the way this narrative unfolds, as I said,

  78. is that it invites us to follow the eyewitnesses,

  79. to see through their eyes,

  80. as they piece together the clues of what took place that Sunday morning.

  81. So first, let's take in the setting,

  82. which we had in the second of those readings that Joe just did for us

  83. at the end of John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  84. After Jesus' cry on the cross of,

  85. it is finished, he gave up his spirit and died.

  86. And sometime later, a soldier confirmed he was dead

  87. by piercing his side with a spear.

  88. And then two secret disciples,

  89. as in they weren't following Jesus openly, but secretly,

  90. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus,

  91. they requested the body of Jesus.

  92. They prepared Jesus' body for burial

  93. by binding Jesus' body in linen cloths,

  94. along with a significant quantity of costly spices.

  95. And then in John chapter 19, verse 41,

    John 19:41

  96. we read,

  97. Now in the place where he was crucified,

  98. there was a garden,

  99. and in the garden a new tomb,

  100. in which no one had yet been laid.

  101. So they placed Jesus there,

  102. because it's nearby,

  103. and the day of the Sabbath day,

  104. which began with sundown on Friday,

  105. the Sabbath day was approaching,

  106. they placed Jesus there.

  107. It's a new tomb, John tells us.

  108. Jesus is the only one who's been laid there,

  109. so that everything that subsequently took place

  110. in and around that tomb must concern Jesus' body

  111. and no one else's.

  112. There's no possibility of confusion here.

  113. So the next day was a Sabbath,

  114. the day of rest,

  115. and on the third day,

  116. the first to arrive at this garden tomb

  117. was Mary Magdalene.

  118. So John tells us,

  119. John chapter 20, verse 1,

    John 20:1

  120. Now on the first day of the week,

  121. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,

  122. while it was still dark,

  123. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  124. Now before we think about what Mary saw,

  125. let's just pause to ponder for a moment

  126. the symbolism of the setting.

  127. It's the first day of the week.

  128. It's a beginning.

  129. It's early.

  130. There's darkness.

  131. There's a garden.

  132. But in the garden was a tomb.

  133. The place of life had become a place of death.

  134. Can you feel the meaning just in the setting here?

  135. Can you hear the echoes of another beginning?

  136. Of another darkness upon which light was about to break?

  137. Of another garden?

  138. Mary came to this place,

  139. and what did she see?

  140. She saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  141. The stone which sealed the tomb had been removed.

  142. The tomb had been broken open.

  143. Now I wonder, have you ever come home

  144. to find one of the doors of your house,

  145. which you left closed,

  146. standing wide open?

  147. If you have experienced that,

  148. it's quite an unsettling sight.

  149. You come home,

  150. you close the door,

  151. there it is,

  152. it's open.

  153. If you have experienced that,

  154. you probably immediately thought

  155. something similar to what Mary thought at this moment.

  156. Verse 2,

  157. So she ran and went to Simon Peter

  158. and the other disciple,

  159. this is the one whom Jesus loved,

  160. that's John,

  161. and said to them,

  162. they have taken the Lord out of the tomb,

  163. and we do not know where they've laid him.

  164. She immediately jumps to the conclusion

  165. that Jesus' body has been taken away,

  166. someone's stolen it,

  167. based on the clues she had seen.

  168. Now, it seems that Mary didn't enter the tomb

  169. before running to alert Peter and John.

  170. I wonder what you would have done

  171. if you were in Mary's shoes.

  172. Would you have entered the tomb?

  173. If you,

  174. particularly perhaps if you're a woman

  175. and you come home

  176. and you find that the door to your house

  177. which you left closed is open,

  178. are you going in?

  179. What about if it's not a house

  180. but it's actually a dark tomb

  181. where you need to stoop down

  182. in order to get into it?

  183. Are you going in?

  184. You probably do what Mary did.

  185. But based on the clues she had seen,

  186. she formed what seemed to be

  187. the obvious conclusion

  188. and she took what seemed to be

  189. the prudent course of action.

  190. She ran to fetch others.

  191. Notice in passing Mary's words

  192. to the disciples,

  193. in verse 2,

  194. they've taken the Lord out of the tomb

  195. and we do not know

  196. where they've laid him.

  197. There's a little hint

  198. that there were other women

  199. present with Mary at the tomb.

  200. Perhaps they ran with Mary

  201. to Peter and John also.

  202. Perhaps they're still at the tomb.

  203. John, this account doesn't tell us.

  204. But I just draw attention

  205. to it in passing

  206. because it's one of those points

  207. at which an apparent discrepancy

  208. between the four Gospels,

  209. the other three Gospels

  210. have multiple women at the tomb.

  211. John, at first appearance,

  212. seems to have just Mary.

  213. An apparent discrepancy

  214. is not a discrepancy at all.

  215. It's just different ways

  216. of telling the same story.

  217. The same event being reported.

  218. For whatever reason,

  219. the other Gospels focus

  220. on a group of women.

  221. John chooses to focus

  222. on one woman,

  223. Mary Magdalene.

  224. We'll return to Mary shortly,

  225. but for now the narrative passes

  226. from what Mary saw

  227. to what Peter and John saw.

  228. Verse 3.

  229. So Peter went out

  230. with the other disciple

  231. and they were going

  232. toward the tomb.

  233. Both of them were running together,

  234. but the other disciple,

  235. that's John,

  236. who's writing this account,

  237. the other disciple,

  238. outran Peter

  239. and reached the tomb first.

  240. Now given Mary's

  241. startling announcement,

  242. it isn't that surprising

  243. that they ran to the tomb.

  244. That's not a surprise

  245. to find them running.

  246. Now I like running.

  247. I like running enough.

  248. I'm slowing down

  249. as I get older,

  250. but I like running enough

  251. that I still kind of

  252. keep track of times

  253. and try to beat

  254. my previous times

  255. and so on.

  256. And so I can appreciate

  257. verses 3 to 4.

  258. It must have been nice

  259. for John while honestly

  260. and accurately reporting

  261. what took place that day

  262. just to drop into the account

  263. that he ran faster

  264. than his friend.

  265. I mean, I'm not bragging,

  266. I'm just telling what happened.

  267. John reached the tomb first.

  268. What did John see

  269. and Peter after him?

  270. And stooping down to look in,

  271. he saw the linen cloths

  272. lying there,

  273. but he did not go in.

  274. Then Simon Peter came,

  275. following him,

  276. and went into the tomb.

  277. He saw the linen cloths

  278. lying there

  279. and the face cloth,

  280. which had been on Jesus' head,

  281. not lying with the linen cloths,

  282. but folded up

  283. in a place by itself.

  284. Notice the careful attention

  285. to detail here.

  286. John doesn't tell us

  287. why he didn't barge

  288. right into the tomb.

  289. You know, maybe it was fear,

  290. maybe he was being respectful,

  291. he doesn't tell us

  292. why he didn't go in,

  293. but I think I'd probably

  294. be with John here.

  295. You know, a bit of caution

  296. doesn't go astray.

  297. But there's no holding Peter back,

  298. which is kind of in keeping

  299. with what we know

  300. of Peter's temperament

  301. from other events

  302. in the Gospels.

  303. Peter arrived

  304. and he just goes straight in.

  305. From outside the tomb,

  306. peering in,

  307. bending down and peering in,

  308. John could see

  309. the linen cloths

  310. lying there.

  311. These are the cloths

  312. that Jesus' body

  313. had been wrapped in.

  314. What's implied

  315. is that the cloths

  316. are there,

  317. but the body isn't.

  318. If the body of Jesus

  319. had been there,

  320. the linen cloths

  321. would have been

  322. wrapped around the body,

  323. not just lying there.

  324. I think it's also implied

  325. that the spices

  326. are still there,

  327. although they're not

  328. directly visible,

  329. but the spices

  330. which had been bound up

  331. between layers of cloth

  332. as Joseph and Nicodemus

  333. had prepared Jesus' body.

  334. So that's what John sees

  335. inside the tomb

  336. when Peter enters.

  337. He can see another detail.

  338. The face cloth

  339. folded up

  340. in a place by itself.

  341. Well, emboldened

  342. by Peter's example,

  343. John enters the tomb

  344. and he's able to take in

  345. this additional detail

  346. and he tells us

  347. his state of mind

  348. at the time.

  349. Remember,

  350. it's written in the third person,

  351. but this is John's

  352. personal testimony

  353. in this account.

  354. Verse 8,

  355. then the other disciple,

  356. John,

  357. who had reached

  358. the tomb first,

  359. let's just drop that in again,

  360. he also went in

  361. and he saw

  362. and believed.

  363. He saw

  364. and believed.

  365. What did he see?

  366. Now he saw

  367. the whole scene

  368. just as Peter

  369. had,

  370. nobody,

  371. the linen cloths,

  372. the face cloth

  373. folded up

  374. in a separate place

  375. by itself.

  376. He took in

  377. these things,

  378. he saw

  379. these clues

  380. and he believed.

  381. John is,

  382. he's drawing

  383. connection,

  384. now in his account,

  385. John is

  386. intentionally drawing

  387. a connection

  388. between seeing

  389. and believing.

  390. He saw

  391. and he believed,

  392. he believed

  393. because he saw.

  394. But what did he believe?

  395. It seems to me

  396. that what we're

  397. supposed to understand

  398. by this

  399. is that

  400. John

  401. at this moment

  402. believed

  403. that Jesus

  404. had risen

  405. from the dead.

  406. Now why do I say that?

  407. Well,

  408. have a look at verse 9.

  409. Verse 8,

  410. he saw

  411. and believed

  412. for as yet

  413. they did not

  414. understand

  415. the scripture

  416. that he must

  417. rise from

  418. the dead.

  419. Now notice

  420. the start of verse 9,

  421. it says,

  422. he saw

  423. and believed

  424. for as yet

  425. they did not

  426. understand,

  427. he's explaining,

  428. verse 9,

  429. the for is explaining

  430. something about

  431. the verse 8.

  432. What's it explaining?

  433. It doesn't

  434. explain

  435. why he believed

  436. because verse 9

  437. is about something

  438. they didn't understand.

  439. It doesn't even

  440. explain

  441. really

  442. what

  443. he believed.

  444. I think

  445. what it does

  446. explain

  447. is

  448. why

  449. John

  450. had to

  451. see

  452. before

  453. he believed.

  454. That's what it

  455. explains,

  456. why he had to

  457. see before

  458. he believed.

  459. Why?

  460. He saw

  461. and believed

  462. for as yet

  463. they did not

  464. understand

  465. the scripture.

  466. Now John

  467. doesn't tell us

  468. whether Peter

  469. also believed

  470. at this point,

  471. maybe he did,

  472. maybe he didn't.

  473. But John

  474. isn't bragging

  475. about,

  476. he's not boasting

  477. about believing

  478. here,

  479. if anything

  480. he's saying,

  481. I should have

  482. believed earlier,

  483. I should have

  484. already known

  485. this,

  486. that Jesus

  487. would rise

  488. from the dead,

  489. I should have

  490. known this

  491. would happen

  492. because the

  493. scripture said

  494. so.

  495. Of course,

  496. not only

  497. did scriptures

  498. like Isaiah

  499. 53,

  500. which Joe

  501. read for us

  502. in Psalm

  503. 16,

  504. prophesy,

  505. predict this

  506. event,

  507. that the

  508. Messiah,

  509. the Christ

  510. would rise,

  511. but Jesus

  512. himself had

  513. told his

  514. disciples

  515. multiple times

  516. that he

  517. would rise

  518. after three

  519. days.

  520. Perhaps

  521. Jesus'

  522. words are

  523. there in

  524. the back

  525. of John's

  526. mind

  527. somewhere.

  528. But why

  529. is it that

  530. seeing these

  531. things in

  532. particular,

  533. seeing the

  534. linen cloth,

  535. seeing the

  536. folded up

  537. face cloth,

  538. why is it

  539. that seeing

  540. these things

  541. would prompt

  542. John to

  543. believe that

  544. Jesus was

  545. alive?

  546. You might

  547. say it's a

  548. hasty conclusion,

  549. it goes beyond

  550. the evidence.

  551. But it's,

  552. I think it is,

  553. if you think

  554. about it,

  555. if you reflect

  556. on it,

  557. it is,

  558. what John

  559. saw did

  560. make other

  561. conclusions

  562. less likely.

  563. intrinsically

  564. less likely.

  565. So let's

  566. consider some

  567. other

  568. conclusions.

  569. Conclusion

  570. one,

  571. someone took

  572. the body,

  573. someone stole

  574. Jesus'

  575. body.

  576. Well,

  577. if someone

  578. broke into

  579. the tomb

  580. and took

  581. Jesus'

  582. body,

  583. it's very

  584. unlikely that

  585. they would

  586. have removed

  587. the cloths

  588. first.

  589. They'd just

  590. grab the

  591. body with

  592. the cloths,

  593. the only

  594. body in

  595. the tomb.

  596. on the

  597. other hand,

  598. if it were

  599. grave robbers,

  600. I mean,

  601. it's not like

  602. Jesus wasn't

  603. buried with a

  604. chest of

  605. treasure or

  606. anything,

  607. but if it was

  608. grave robbers,

  609. what would

  610. they have

  611. done?

  612. They would

  613. have left

  614. the body

  615. and taken

  616. the linen

  617. cloths,

  618. because they

  619. were the

  620. only thing

  621. of value.

  622. So either

  623. the body

  624. and cloths

  625. are gone

  626. together,

  627. or the

  628. cloths are

  629. gone and

  630. the body's

  631. left,

  632. but who

  633. would take

  634. just the

  635. body?

  636. And whoever

  637. they were,

  638. you know,

  639. if they're

  640. coming in,

  641. they're breaking

  642. into the

  643. tomb and

  644. taking something

  645. or someone,

  646. or if they're

  647. up to no

  648. good,

  649. they would

  650. have just

  651. snatched what

  652. they wanted

  653. and left.

  654. They wouldn't

  655. have gone

  656. to the

  657. effort of

  658. neatly

  659. folding up

  660. the face

  661. cloth.

  662. No,

  663. John seems

  664. to reach the

  665. conclusion here

  666. that the

  667. burial cloths

  668. are left

  669. in the

  670. tomb

  671. because

  672. Jesus

  673. had no

  674. need of

  675. them

  676. anymore.

  677. For that

  678. simple

  679. reason.

  680. Of course,

  681. at this

  682. stage,

  683. John's

  684. belief may

  685. have only

  686. been

  687. hesitant,

  688. uncertain,

  689. incomplete.

  690. There are

  691. more things

  692. John will

  693. see in

  694. time.

  695. But John,

  696. as he tells

  697. his account,

  698. he wants

  699. us to

  700. know that

  701. his belief

  702. was based

  703. on what

  704. he saw.

  705. He saw

  706. and believed.

  707. His belief

  708. was not

  709. based on

  710. what he

  711. expected,

  712. he didn't

  713. yet understand

  714. the scriptures,

  715. it was

  716. based on

  717. what he

  718. saw.

  719. Well,

  720. having seen

  721. and believed,

  722. verse 10,

  723. then the

  724. disciples went

  725. back to

  726. their homes.

  727. And now

  728. we return

  729. to the

  730. one with

  731. whom this

  732. day began,

  733. Mary Magdalene,

  734. and what

  735. Mary saw

  736. next.

  737. Mary had

  738. not seen

  739. what Peter

  740. and John

  741. saw.

  742. I mean,

  743. perhaps,

  744. I think it's

  745. likely she

  746. was still

  747. on her

  748. way back

  749. to the

  750. tomb when

  751. they reached

  752. the tomb.

  753. But verse

  754. 11 leads

  755. with Mary's

  756. emotional state,

  757. but Mary

  758. stood weeping

  759. outside the

  760. tomb,

  761. and as she

  762. wept,

  763. she stooped

  764. to look

  765. into the

  766. tomb.

  767. Notice

  768. that Mary's

  769. weeping is

  770. mentioned twice

  771. in this

  772. verse.

  773. She's

  774. weeping

  775. because

  776. Jesus,

  777. her Lord,

  778. her friend,

  779. had been

  780. cruelly put

  781. to death.

  782. She's

  783. weeping

  784. because,

  785. as best

  786. she could

  787. judge,

  788. his tomb

  789. had been

  790. broken open

  791. and his

  792. body

  793. taken.

  794. She's

  795. weeping,

  796. she's

  797. grieving

  798. over death

  799. and loss,

  800. and she

  801. stooped

  802. to look

  803. into the

  804. tomb,

  805. as John

  806. had done

  807. when he

  808. first arrived

  809. at the

  810. tomb,

  811. and we

  812. expect her

  813. to see

  814. what John

  815. saw.

  816. But instead,

  817. she sees

  818. something else.

  819. Verse 12,

  820. and she

  821. saw two

  822. angels in

  823. white,

  824. sitting where

  825. the body

  826. of Jesus

  827. had lain,

  828. one at

  829. the head

  830. and one

  831. at the

  832. feet.

  833. Now,

  834. presumably,

  835. the linen

  836. cloths are

  837. still there,

  838. although perhaps

  839. Peter and

  840. John took

  841. them,

  842. I don't

  843. know.

  844. but the

  845. surprise for

  846. Mary is,

  847. I mean,

  848. again,

  849. Jesus'

  850. body isn't

  851. there,

  852. but she

  853. sees these

  854. two angels

  855. dressed in

  856. white.

  857. They are

  858. there,

  859. but Jesus

  860. is not.

  861. They're

  862. sitting where

  863. Jesus'

  864. body had

  865. lain.

  866. Now,

  867. the thing

  868. about angels,

  869. the whole

  870. thing about

  871. angels,

  872. their whole

  873. shtick,

  874. really,

  875. is that

  876. angels are

  877. messengers,

  878. They deliver

  879. messages.

  880. In fact,

  881. the word

  882. angel can,

  883. in other

  884. contexts,

  885. just be

  886. translated as

  887. messenger.

  888. In the

  889. other gospels,

  890. Matthew,

  891. Mark and

  892. Luke,

  893. these angels

  894. deliver a

  895. message to

  896. the women

  897. at the

  898. tomb.

  899. But here

  900. in John,

  901. they simply

  902. ask Mary

  903. a question.

  904. Verse 13,

  905. they said

  906. to her,

  907. Woman,

  908. why are

  909. you weeping?

  910. We've been

  911. told twice in

  912. verse 11 that

  913. Mary was

  914. weeping,

  915. and now

  916. the angels

  917. ask her,

  918. why are

  919. you weeping?

  920. And the

  921. question,

  922. I think it

  923. strikes us

  924. as a bit

  925. odd,

  926. doesn't it?

  927. I mean,

  928. maybe even

  929. a bit

  930. callous.

  931. If you

  932. went to

  933. a funeral

  934. and you

  935. turned to

  936. someone who

  937. was crying

  938. next to you

  939. and said,

  940. Woman,

  941. why are

  942. you weeping?

  943. I think

  944. they'd

  945. probably

  946. throw you

  947. out.

  948. I mean,

  949. Mary's

  950. weeping

  951. really

  952. shouldn't

  953. require an

  954. explanation.

  955. Weeping's

  956. what one

  957. does at

  958. a tomb.

  959. Jesus

  960. wept at

  961. the tomb

  962. of Lazarus,

  963. Mary weeps

  964. at the tomb

  965. of Jesus.

  966. So,

  967. what are

  968. these angels

  969. saying by

  970. their question?

  971. Woman,

  972. why are

  973. you weeping?

  974. Verse 13

  975. again,

  976. she said

  977. to them,

  978. they have

  979. taken away

  980. my Lord

  981. and I

  982. do not

  983. know where

  984. they have

  985. laid him.

  986. Now,

  987. it may

  988. in part

  989. be an

  990. answer to

  991. the angel's

  992. question.

  993. This is

  994. one of the

  995. reasons she's

  996. crying because

  997. she doesn't

  998. know where

  999. Jesus'

  1000. body is.

  1001. She's

  1002. distressed.

  1003. But it

  1004. also shows

  1005. she's still

  1006. in the

  1007. same

  1008. frame of

  1009. mind as

  1010. when she

  1011. first went

  1012. to Peter

  1013. and John

  1014. back in

  1015. verse 2.

  1016. She thinks

  1017. someone's

  1018. taken,

  1019. people have

  1020. taken Jesus'

  1021. body away.

  1022. But in

  1023. verse 2,

  1024. she said

  1025. to Peter

  1026. and John,

  1027. the Lord

  1028. and we

  1029. do not

  1030. know.

  1031. Now,

  1032. she says

  1033. to the

  1034. angels,

  1035. my Lord

  1036. and I

  1037. do not

  1038. know.

  1039. In her

  1040. grief,

  1041. her world

  1042. has shrunk

  1043. just to

  1044. her Lord

  1045. and her

  1046. confusion.

  1047. the

  1048. angels

  1049. don't

  1050. answer.

  1051. In

  1052. fact,

  1053. that's

  1054. all we

  1055. hear of

  1056. the

  1057. angels

  1058. in

  1059. John's

  1060. Gospel.

  1061. Still in

  1062. despair and

  1063. confusion,

  1064. Mary turns

  1065. away from

  1066. the tomb

  1067. and she

  1068. sees

  1069. something

  1070. else.

  1071. Verse 14,

  1072. having said

  1073. this,

  1074. she turned

  1075. around and

  1076. saw

  1077. Jesus

  1078. standing,

  1079. but

  1080. she did

  1081. not know

  1082. that it

  1083. was

  1084. Jesus.

  1085. Jesus

  1086. said to

  1087. her,

  1088. woman,

  1089. why are

  1090. you

  1091. weeping?

  1092. Whom

  1093. are you

  1094. seeking?

  1095. She

  1096. sees

  1097. Jesus,

  1098. she doesn't

  1099. realise

  1100. it's

  1101. Jesus.

  1102. This

  1103. new

  1104. man

  1105. asks

  1106. her

  1107. the

  1108. same

  1109. question

  1110. as

  1111. the

  1112. angels

  1113. and

  1114. then

  1115. a

  1116. second

  1117. question.

  1118. But now

  1119. these

  1120. questions

  1121. take on

  1122. new

  1123. meaning,

  1124. don't

  1125. they?

  1126. Jesus'

  1127. questions

  1128. to

  1129. Mary

  1130. are not

  1131. to

  1132. belittle

  1133. or mock

  1134. her grief.

  1135. Rather,

  1136. Jesus'

  1137. questions

  1138. are to

  1139. answer

  1140. Mary's

  1141. grief.

  1142. Why

  1143. are you

  1144. weeping?

  1145. There's

  1146. no need

  1147. for tears.

  1148. whom

  1149. are you

  1150. seeking?

  1151. I'm

  1152. standing

  1153. right

  1154. here.

  1155. It was

  1156. right for

  1157. Jesus to

  1158. weep at

  1159. the tomb

  1160. of

  1161. Lazarus

  1162. when

  1163. Lazarus

  1164. was still

  1165. in the

  1166. tomb.

  1167. But why

  1168. should

  1169. Mary

  1170. weep at

  1171. the tomb

  1172. of Jesus

  1173. when the

  1174. tomb

  1175. was empty?

  1176. But

  1177. Mary's

  1178. not there

  1179. yet.

  1180. She

  1181. hasn't

  1182. caught

  1183. up.

  1184. Verse

  1185. 15,

  1186. supposing

  1187. him to

  1188. be the

  1189. gardener,

  1190. she

  1191. said to

  1192. him,

  1193. sir,

  1194. if you

  1195. have

  1196. carried

  1197. him away,

  1198. tell me

  1199. where you

  1200. have laid

  1201. him and

  1202. I will

  1203. take him

  1204. away.

  1205. I mean,

  1206. supposing him

  1207. to be the

  1208. gardener,

  1209. we're reminded

  1210. again of

  1211. the garden

  1212. and perhaps

  1213. of another

  1214. garden.

  1215. Remember

  1216. that at

  1217. creation,

  1218. the first

  1219. man was

  1220. placed in

  1221. Eden to

  1222. be a

  1223. gardener,

  1224. and so

  1225. now at

  1226. the dawn

  1227. of a

  1228. new

  1229. creation,

  1230. the

  1231. last

  1232. man

  1233. appears

  1234. as a

  1235. gardener

  1236. at

  1237. first.

  1238. Verse

  1239. 16,

  1240. Jesus

  1241. said to

  1242. her,

  1243. Mary,

  1244. and she

  1245. turned and

  1246. said to

  1247. him in

  1248. Aramaic,

  1249. Rabboni,

  1250. which means

  1251. teacher.

  1252. Jesus

  1253. speaks her

  1254. name.

  1255. And we're

  1256. told again

  1257. that Mary

  1258. turned,

  1259. perhaps she

  1260. hadn't looked

  1261. directly at

  1262. Jesus

  1263. previously,

  1264. but now

  1265. she faces

  1266. him directly

  1267. full on.

  1268. She hears

  1269. his voice,

  1270. she recognises

  1271. his call,

  1272. she turns

  1273. to him and

  1274. she says

  1275. Rabboni,

  1276. and this

  1277. is one of

  1278. those few

  1279. times in

  1280. the Gospels,

  1281. which the

  1282. Gospels were

  1283. written in

  1284. Greek,

  1285. but one of

  1286. those few

  1287. times in

  1288. the Gospels

  1289. where we're

  1290. given the

  1291. exact Aramaic

  1292. word which

  1293. was spoken

  1294. at that

  1295. moment.

  1296. It draws

  1297. us in as

  1298. readers even

  1299. closer to

  1300. this precise

  1301. moment.

  1302. As we

  1303. hear the

  1304. word she

  1305. said.

  1306. We can

  1307. picture at

  1308. this moment

  1309. Mary falling

  1310. to her

  1311. knees,

  1312. clinging

  1313. onto Jesus'

  1314. feet as

  1315. joy,

  1316. relief and

  1317. amazement and

  1318. awe wash

  1319. over her.

  1320. But Jesus'

  1321. resurrection

  1322. was not merely

  1323. a return to

  1324. life as it

  1325. had been

  1326. before,

  1327. nor was it

  1328. for Mary

  1329. alone.

  1330. So verse

  1331. 17,

  1332. Jesus said

  1333. to her,

  1334. do not

  1335. cling to

  1336. me,

  1337. for I

  1338. have not

  1339. yet ascended

  1340. to the

  1341. Father,

  1342. but go

  1343. to my

  1344. brothers and

  1345. say to

  1346. them,

  1347. I am

  1348. ascending to

  1349. my Father

  1350. and your

  1351. Father,

  1352. to my

  1353. God

  1354. and your

  1355. God.

  1356. Now there's

  1357. an awful lot

  1358. we could unpack

  1359. here in these

  1360. words of Jesus

  1361. in verse 17,

  1362. more than we

  1363. have time

  1364. for today.

  1365. Briefly to

  1366. touch on a

  1367. few things,

  1368. Jesus says

  1369. he would

  1370. soon ascend

  1371. to the

  1372. Father as

  1373. he'd already

  1374. promised,

  1375. but Jesus'

  1376. ascension to

  1377. the Father is

  1378. more than a

  1379. return,

  1380. it's also an

  1381. elevation.

  1382. Jesus would

  1383. ascend to

  1384. his position

  1385. of authority

  1386. with the

  1387. Father in

  1388. glory.

  1389. He would

  1390. not,

  1391. Jesus says,

  1392. at this

  1393. time remain

  1394. bodily with

  1395. his disciples.

  1396. Instead he

  1397. would,

  1398. as he'd

  1399. previously

  1400. taught,

  1401. he would

  1402. send forth

  1403. another

  1404. counsellor.

  1405. For the

  1406. next stage

  1407. of God's

  1408. plan that

  1409. was about

  1410. to unfold,

  1411. Jesus'

  1412. presence with

  1413. his disciples

  1414. would be

  1415. in the

  1416. person of

  1417. the

  1418. Spirit.

  1419. He says,

  1420. I've not

  1421. yet ascended

  1422. to the

  1423. Father.

  1424. This is

  1425. the first

  1426. time that

  1427. Jesus,

  1428. in John's

  1429. Gospel,

  1430. we see it

  1431. also in Luke,

  1432. this is the

  1433. first time in

  1434. John's

  1435. Gospel,

  1436. that Jesus

  1437. calls his

  1438. followers,

  1439. my

  1440. brothers,

  1441. my

  1442. brothers.

  1443. A new

  1444. family had

  1445. been established

  1446. by Jesus'

  1447. death and

  1448. resurrection.

  1449. A new

  1450. family in

  1451. which we,

  1452. as Jesus,

  1453. call on

  1454. God as

  1455. Father,

  1456. and yet

  1457. Jesus'

  1458. relationship

  1459. with the

  1460. Father is

  1461. distinct

  1462. from ours.

  1463. Jesus

  1464. says,

  1465. he's my

  1466. Father and

  1467. your

  1468. Father,

  1469. he's my

  1470. God and

  1471. your

  1472. God.

  1473. There's a

  1474. sense in

  1475. which

  1476. the

  1477. Father

  1478. is

  1479. Jesus'

  1480. God,

  1481. the

  1482. sense in

  1483. which

  1484. the

  1485. Father

  1486. is

  1487. Jesus'

  1488. Father

  1489. is

  1490. distinct

  1491. from the

  1492. sense in

  1493. which he's

  1494. our

  1495. Father.

  1496. The

  1497. sense in

  1498. which

  1499. God

  1500. the

  1501. Father

  1502. is

  1503. Jesus'

  1504. God

  1505. is

  1506. distinct

  1507. from the

  1508. sense in

  1509. which he

  1510. is

  1511. our

  1512. God.

  1513. There's

  1514. some

  1515. deep

  1516. Trinitarian

  1517. reflection

  1518. we could

  1519. do on

  1520. this

  1521. verse,

  1522. but

  1523. we'll

  1524. move

  1525. on.

  1526. I

  1527. want

  1528. to

  1529. close

  1530. with

  1531. two

  1532. thoughts.

  1533. First,

  1534. Mary's

  1535. announcement,

  1536. weeping,

  1537. verse 18,

  1538. Mary Magdalene

  1539. went and

  1540. announced to

  1541. the

  1542. disciples,

  1543. I have

  1544. seen the

  1545. Lord,

  1546. and that

  1547. he had

  1548. said these

  1549. things to

  1550. her.

  1551. I've seen

  1552. the Lord.

  1553. I mean,

  1554. again,

  1555. we've got that

  1556. key verb

  1557. that's been

  1558. throughout this

  1559. account,

  1560. seen,

  1561. I have

  1562. seen the

  1563. Lord.

  1564. just as

  1565. John saw

  1566. and believed,

  1567. Mary had

  1568. now seen

  1569. and she

  1570. believed.

  1571. The next

  1572. verses,

  1573. the rest

  1574. of the

  1575. chapter,

  1576. would relate

  1577. how the

  1578. other

  1579. disciples also

  1580. came to

  1581. see Jesus

  1582. and believe,

  1583. including

  1584. John and

  1585. Peter.

  1586. why all

  1587. this

  1588. emphasis

  1589. on what

  1590. Mary and

  1591. the

  1592. disciples

  1593. saw?

  1594. Well,

  1595. the Bible

  1596. records this,

  1597. it's for

  1598. us,

  1599. it's for

  1600. our sake.

  1601. Jesus

  1602. would soon

  1603. say to

  1604. his

  1605. disciples,

  1606. because you

  1607. have seen

  1608. me,

  1609. you have

  1610. believed,

  1611. blessed are

  1612. those who

  1613. have not

  1614. seen and

  1615. yet have

  1616. believed.

  1617. Jesus is

  1618. talking about

  1619. us.

  1620. We haven't

  1621. seen Jesus,

  1622. but God

  1623. wants everyone

  1624. to know

  1625. that Jesus

  1626. rose from

  1627. the dead,

  1628. even those,

  1629. the thousands,

  1630. the millions,

  1631. the billions

  1632. that would

  1633. follow,

  1634. to know that

  1635. Jesus rose from

  1636. the dead,

  1637. even though we

  1638. have not

  1639. seen.

  1640. God wants

  1641. everyone to

  1642. know that

  1643. Jesus is

  1644. alive and

  1645. that he is

  1646. Lord.

  1647. And because

  1648. God wants

  1649. us all to

  1650. know this

  1651. too,

  1652. the disciples

  1653. wrote this

  1654. down so

  1655. that we

  1656. could in

  1657. a sense

  1658. see what

  1659. they see,

  1660. what they

  1661. saw.

  1662. They wrote

  1663. down what

  1664. they saw,

  1665. the stone

  1666. rolled away

  1667. from the

  1668. tomb,

  1669. the linen

  1670. cloths lying

  1671. in the

  1672. tomb,

  1673. the wrapping

  1674. for Jesus'

  1675. head folded

  1676. in a separate

  1677. place,

  1678. two angels

  1679. at the

  1680. tomb,

  1681. and finally

  1682. Jesus himself,

  1683. they wrote

  1684. down what

  1685. they saw,

  1686. so that even

  1687. though we

  1688. haven't seen

  1689. Jesus,

  1690. we too

  1691. could believe

  1692. that he

  1693. is alive.

  1694. That that

  1695. Jesus bodily

  1696. rose from

  1697. the dead

  1698. on the

  1699. third day

  1700. after his

  1701. crucifixion

  1702. is absolutely

  1703. foundational

  1704. to faith.

  1705. Christian

  1706. faith is

  1707. resurrection

  1708. faith.

  1709. Paul,

  1710. that enemy

  1711. of the

  1712. church

  1713. turned

  1714. apostle,

  1715. he is

  1716. another who

  1717. believed

  1718. because he

  1719. saw.

  1720. He wrote

  1721. that Jesus'

  1722. resurrection

  1723. is of

  1724. first importance.

  1725. If Christ

  1726. has not

  1727. been raised,

  1728. Paul wrote,

  1729. our faith

  1730. is futile.

  1731. The

  1732. resurrection

  1733. of Jesus

  1734. means first

  1735. that he

  1736. is Lord.

  1737. He has

  1738. conquered sin,

  1739. he's conquered

  1740. death,

  1741. he's conquered

  1742. the devil,

  1743. he's victorious

  1744. over all of

  1745. God's enemies,

  1746. he's exalted,

  1747. he's appointed

  1748. by God the

  1749. Father as

  1750. Lord of all,

  1751. as ruler

  1752. and judge

  1753. of all.

  1754. And so

  1755. in Romans

    Romans 10:9

  1756. 10 verse

  1757. 9 Paul

  1758. says,

  1759. if you

  1760. confess with

  1761. your mouth

  1762. that Jesus

  1763. is Lord

  1764. and believe

  1765. in your

  1766. heart that

  1767. God raised

  1768. him from

  1769. the dead,

  1770. you will

  1771. be saved.

  1772. That is

  1773. the,

  1774. that's what

  1775. we confess,

  1776. that's what

  1777. we believe,

  1778. those two

  1779. belong together,

  1780. confessing

  1781. that Jesus

  1782. is Lord,

  1783. believing that

  1784. God raised

  1785. him from

  1786. the dead,

  1787. that is

  1788. Christian

  1789. faith.

  1790. If the

  1791. body of

  1792. Jesus

  1793. remained in

  1794. the tomb,

  1795. if he's

  1796. still buried

  1797. there,

  1798. he might

  1799. be an

  1800. inspiring

  1801. example,

  1802. he might

  1803. be a

  1804. noble

  1805. martyr,

  1806. but if

  1807. the tomb

  1808. is empty,

  1809. he is

  1810. Lord,

  1811. the living

  1812. Lord.

  1813. We can

  1814. say with

  1815. Mary,

  1816. Jesus is

  1817. Lord,

  1818. indeed each

  1819. of us must

  1820. say with

  1821. Mary,

  1822. not only that

  1823. Jesus is

  1824. the Lord,

  1825. but that

  1826. Jesus is

  1827. my Lord.

  1828. The one

  1829. who conquered

  1830. death has

  1831. all authority,

  1832. there's nothing

  1833. beyond his

  1834. rule and

  1835. power,

  1836. and now it

  1837. just remains

  1838. for the world

  1839. to hear this.

  1840. Mary Magdalene's

  1841. initial

  1842. announcement

  1843. must be

  1844. carried to

  1845. all nations.

  1846. Think of

  1847. the most

  1848. dark and

  1849. dismal

  1850. situations

  1851. in our

  1852. world today.

  1853. there is

  1854. none,

  1855. no matter

  1856. how grim,

  1857. that could

  1858. not be

  1859. transformed

  1860. by the

  1861. news that

  1862. Jesus rose

  1863. from the

  1864. dead.

  1865. With

  1866. our church

  1867. small group

  1868. last week,

  1869. we had

  1870. a social

  1871. where

  1872. Catherine

  1873. Gibbons

  1874. took us

  1875. through some

  1876. slides of

  1877. her recent

  1878. holiday in

  1879. West

  1880. Papua,

  1881. where she

  1882. visited a

  1883. number of

  1884. small villages

  1885. during a

  1886. cruise around

  1887. parts of

  1888. West Papua.

  1889. Catherine

  1890. showed us a

  1891. bunch of

  1892. churches and

  1893. so on,

  1894. and told us

  1895. how openly

  1896. the people of

  1897. West Papua were

  1898. speaking about

  1899. this,

  1900. that once a

  1901. year,

  1902. people will

  1903. come together

  1904. for a service

  1905. of celebration

  1906. and thanksgiving,

  1907. thanking God

  1908. for the

  1909. Christian

  1910. missionaries

  1911. who first

  1912. came to

  1913. tell Papuans

  1914. that Jesus

  1915. is the risen

  1916. Lord of

  1917. all.

  1918. And they

  1919. relate how

  1920. before they

  1921. knew Jesus

  1922. their lives

  1923. were brutal

  1924. and full of

  1925. violence and

  1926. death,

  1927. tribe warring

  1928. against tribe,

  1929. but the

  1930. gospel has

  1931. brought peace

  1932. and life

  1933. and love

  1934. and transformed

  1935. their society.

  1936. Max

  1937. Stiles tells

  1938. in his book

  1939. The Marks of

  1940. the Messenger

  1941. of how the

  1942. day after

  1943. September 11,

  1944. the terrorist

  1945. attack on the

  1946. World Trade

  1947. Centre,

  1948. the day

  1949. after September

  1950. 11,

  1951. he banged

  1952. a for sale

  1953. sign in the

  1954. front yard

  1955. of his

  1956. house and

  1957. prepared to

  1958. move with

  1959. his family

  1960. to Dubai

  1961. because he

  1962. was convinced

  1963. that the

  1964. church's

  1965. response to

  1966. the horrific

  1967. events of

  1968. September 11

  1969. must be

  1970. missionary,

  1971. not military.

  1972. I'm not

  1973. making a

  1974. political comment

  1975. here,

  1976. I'm speaking

  1977. to the

  1978. church.

  1979. church.

  1980. The

  1981. Middle East

  1982. needs

  1983. Christian

  1984. mission

  1985. now more

  1986. than ever.

  1987. The main

  1988. problem in

  1989. the Middle

  1990. East is not

  1991. oil or

  1992. nuclear weapons

  1993. or oppressive

  1994. government,

  1995. the problem

  1996. is that too

  1997. few people

  1998. know that

  1999. Jesus rose

  2000. from the

  2001. dead and

  2002. that he

  2003. is Lord

  2004. of all.

  2005. The

  2006. resurrection

  2007. of Jesus

  2008. means that

  2009. he is

  2010. Lord and

  2011. if the

  2012. resurrection

  2013. of Jesus

  2014. means that

  2015. he is

  2016. Lord,

  2017. it also

  2018. means that

  2019. he is

  2020. the life

  2021. giver.

  2022. He's the

  2023. life giver.

  2024. He's overcome

  2025. death and

  2026. there's life

  2027. with him and

  2028. so we have

  2029. hope.

  2030. Jesus'

  2031. resurrection is

  2032. the pattern

  2033. for the

  2034. resurrection of

  2035. all of God's

  2036. people.

  2037. Paul says

  2038. in 1

  2039. Corinthians

  2040. 15,

  2041. Christ has

  2042. been raised

  2043. from the

  2044. dead,

  2045. the first

  2046. fruits of

  2047. those who

  2048. have fallen

  2049. asleep.

  2050. As in

  2051. Adam all

  2052. die,

  2053. so in

  2054. Christ all

  2055. shall be

  2056. made alive,

  2057. but each

  2058. in his own

  2059. order,

  2060. Christ the

  2061. first fruits

  2062. and then at

  2063. his coming

  2064. those who

  2065. belong to

  2066. Christ.

  2067. That's our

  2068. hope,

  2069. that we

  2070. will be

  2071. raised as

  2072. he was

  2073. raised,

  2074. that death

  2075. is not

  2076. the end.

  2077. You see

  2078. this hope

  2079. at the

  2080. funerals

  2081. of believers,

  2082. a real

  2083. hope.

  2084. Peter,

  2085. the Apostle

  2086. Peter called

  2087. it a living

  2088. hope.

  2089. A hope

  2090. that has

  2091. a foundation,

  2092. a hope

  2093. that is

  2094. based in

  2095. a real

  2096. event that

  2097. took place

  2098. in history.

  2099. Those who

  2100. die in

  2101. Christ will

  2102. rise again

  2103. because he

  2104. rose.

  2105. I've read

  2106. some tragic

  2107. stories over

  2108. the past

  2109. week of

  2110. young people

  2111. who have

  2112. chosen for

  2113. themselves

  2114. voluntary

  2115. assisted

  2116. dying,

  2117. euthanasia.

  2118. Young people,

  2119. people in their

  2120. twenties,

  2121. because of

  2122. the depression

  2123. they're experiencing

  2124. or the pain

  2125. or the

  2126. suffering that

  2127. they no

  2128. longer want

  2129. to bear.

  2130. The law

  2131. and the

  2132. medical system

  2133. should have

  2134. prevented this.

  2135. Instead,

  2136. the law

  2137. and doctors

  2138. facilitated it.

  2139. need to

  2140. hope.

  2141. These poor

  2142. people had

  2143. no hope

  2144. and those

  2145. around them

  2146. failed to

  2147. give them

  2148. hope.

  2149. That's where

  2150. nihilism and

  2151. atheism lead,

  2152. to a culture

  2153. of death,

  2154. to a world

  2155. without hope.

  2156. death.

  2157. But Jesus

  2158. said to

  2159. Mary,

  2160. woman,

  2161. why are you

  2162. weeping?

  2163. Jesus

  2164. showed Mary

  2165. the answer

  2166. to tears

  2167. is not

  2168. death,

  2169. but life.

  2170. Jesus

  2171. might ask

  2172. you,

  2173. why are you

  2174. weeping?

  2175. Of course,

  2176. we do

  2177. weep,

  2178. and we

  2179. should

  2180. weep,

  2181. for there

  2182. are many

  2183. terrible

  2184. things in

  2185. our world.

  2186. But our

  2187. tears are

  2188. temporary.

  2189. Tears do

  2190. not have

  2191. the last

  2192. word.

  2193. And there

  2194. is no

  2195. suffering,

  2196. no pain,

  2197. no grief

  2198. that cannot

  2199. be transformed

  2200. by the

  2201. resurrection

  2202. of Jesus

  2203. Christ.

  2204. Jesus

  2205. endured

  2206. betrayal

  2207. and deception

  2208. and abandonment.

  2209. Jesus

  2210. endured

  2211. scourging

  2212. and spitting

  2213. and mocking.

  2214. Jesus

  2215. endured

  2216. the nails

  2217. and the

  2218. cross.

  2219. Jesus

  2220. endured

  2221. the judgment

  2222. and wrath

  2223. of God,

  2224. the full

  2225. penalty

  2226. of divine

  2227. punishment

  2228. due to the

  2229. sins of

  2230. the world.

  2231. Jesus

  2232. endured

  2233. death

  2234. and the

  2235. grave.

  2236. He

  2237. endured

  2238. for the

  2239. joy that

  2240. lay before

  2241. him.

  2242. He

  2243. endured

  2244. knowing

  2245. that,

  2246. as we

  2247. read in

  2248. Isaiah 53,

  2249. when his

  2250. soul makes

  2251. an offering

  2252. for guilt,

  2253. he shall

  2254. see his

  2255. offspring,

  2256. he shall

  2257. prolong

  2258. his days.

  2259. Out of

  2260. the anguish

  2261. of his

  2262. soul,

  2263. he shall

  2264. see and

  2265. be satisfied.

  2266. Exactly

  2267. 1,993

  2268. years ago

  2269. today,

  2270. death was

  2271. defeated

  2272. and hope

  2273. was born.

  2274. Christ

  2275. rose

  2276. that we

  2277. might rise.

  2278. Christ

  2279. rose

  2280. that tears

  2281. might give

  2282. way to

  2283. laughter.

  2284. Christ

  2285. rose

  2286. that despair

  2287. might give

  2288. way to

  2289. gladness.

  2290. Christ

  2291. rose

  2292. that grief

  2293. might give

  2294. way to

  2295. joy.

  2296. This

  2297. is our

  2298. day.

  2299. This is

  2300. the Lord's

  2301. day,

  2302. the day

  2303. of Jesus

  2304. Christ,

  2305. Lord and

  2306. life giver

  2307. who rose

  2308. from the

  2309. dead.

  2310. all glory

  2311. and honour

  2312. and power

  2313. be to

  2314. our

  2315. risen

  2316. Lord.

  2317. Amen.
