  1. Our reading this morning is from the book of Genesis, starting in chapter 11 and verse 27.

  2. Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot.

  3. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  4. And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife,

  5. Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. Now Sarai was barren. She had no child.

  6. Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son

  7. Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan.

  8. But when they came to Haran, they settled there. The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in

  9. Haran. Now the Lord said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house

  10. to the land that I will show you, and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make

  11. your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors

  12. you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram went, as the Lord

  13. had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.

  14. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered,

  15. and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan.

  16. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem,

  17. to the oak of Morah. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram

  18. and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built there an altar to the Lord who had

  19. appeared to him. Hear the word of the Lord.

  20. Good morning everyone. Now I need to confess to some poor planning on my part. When I sort of broke up

  21. the book of Genesis for our next preaching series, I didn't realise that the first sermon from Genesis

  22. 16 would be given on Mother's Day. And I think if I had, I would have just pushed it back a week,

  23. because I don't think, I can think of very few passages in the Bible less appropriate to preach

  24. on Mother's Day than Genesis chapter 16. So that's entirely my fault. I'm sorry about that, but here we

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  25. are, and we're going to press on. Let me pray, and then we'll get into the Word of God together.

  26. Heavenly Father, we thank you that we can gather here, and that we can sing your praises,

  27. and hear your Word. Lord, we pray that this part of Scripture, even today,

  28. might, you might make it precious to us, and teach it, and instruct us by it,

  29. for the strengthening of our faith. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  30. Well, before we get into chapter 16 itself, I want to kind of reorient us in the book of Genesis

  31. more broadly. But first, by way of introduction, the word Christian occurs three times in the New

  32. Testament, three times. And it began, the use of the word Christian, as a designation other people

  33. would give to Christians. Christians weren't calling themselves Christians. Other people were

  34. calling them Christians. In the first century, what Christians called themselves, well, they used other

  35. words. The most common four ways Christians referred to themselves in the New Testament are firstly as

  36. brothers and sisters, around 270 times. Secondly, as disciples, around 250 times. Then as believers,

  37. around 80 times. And fourthly, as saints, around 70 times. Now, disciples is a bit of a special case,

  38. because that really is just concentrated in the four Gospels. It's kind of the words that the Gospel

  39. writers and Jesus used. So, outside the Gospels, Christian most commonly referred to themselves,

  40. not as disciples, but as brothers and sisters, i.e. referring to our relationship with one another,

  41. and as believers, a way of designating our relationship with God.

  42. Who are we? We are believers. A Christian is someone who has faith. A Christian is someone who believes.

  43. And so, the creeds in the early church, as they developed, creeds that would be declared by people

  44. who were presenting for baptism, or by the whole church when gathered together, quickly took the form

  45. of statements of faith. I believe in God the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

  46. and in the Holy Spirit. Now, in the Bible, the supreme model of faith is the Old Testament figure of Abraham.

  47. Galatians 3 verse 9 says,

    Galatians 3:9

  48. Those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

  49. New Testament writers frequently refer to Abraham when they want to discuss

  50. the need for faith, or the nature of faith.

  51. And it's this foundational figure of Abraham, whom we're going to follow,

  52. over the next few weeks, in this central part of the book of Genesis, from chapters 16 to 25.

  53. Now, we have spoken on Genesis before at church, but we left off this series in chapter 24,

  54. in 2024 at chapter 15.

  55. So, if you've joined Grace since then, well, you missed out on those talks,

  56. but even if you were around in 2024, you've probably forgotten them.

  57. So, let me briefly summarise what's come in Genesis so far.

  58. I mean, it's pretty familiar to most of us, so we'll keep it brief.

  59. Genesis is the book of creation.

  60. It tells us how God created the heavens and earth by his word,

  61. making all things good,

  62. with humans in a special place,

  63. as his image bearers.

  64. Genesis is the book of the fall.

  65. It tells of the sin and rebellion of humanity

  66. that plunged the world into disorder and misery

  67. and brought God's curse upon the world.

  68. And Genesis is the book of God's promises.

  69. It tells of the promises God gives to reverse the curse

  70. and undo the effects of the fall.

  71. But the promises of God are placed within a narrative,

  72. within a story.

  73. Now, if we just had a list of God's promises,

  74. you know, if the Bible were just a list of all the things God promised us,

  75. well, that itself would be wonderful,

  76. because God's promises are wonderful.

  77. But God has given us more than that.

  78. And we see God's promises play out in a story,

  79. a true story,

  80. an historical story, narrative.

  81. And so we see real people receive God's promises,

  82. wrestle with God's promises,

  83. trust God's promises,

  84. and doubt God's promises,

  85. all in the midst of their messy experiences of life.

  86. Now, I love biblical narrative,

  87. as we're coming to in Genesis,

  88. but we do need to come to biblical narrative

  89. with the right expectations.

  90. Biblical narrative,

  91. you know,

  92. tells stories,

  93. it engages in storytelling with an economy of words.

  94. Now, in this modern era,

  95. we're used to really lengthy, drawn-out stories.

  96. You know, Harry Potter,

  97. The Wheel of Time,

  98. if anyone's ploughed through that, I haven't.

  99. How many seasons of The Gilmore Girls were they?

  100. And they're all the same.

  101. I mean, that...

  102. And you think about it,

  103. like, if you're in the entertainment industry,

  104. you know, if you're producing TV series for Netflix,

  105. or something,

  106. it's actually a win for you

  107. if you can come up with something

  108. that goes on for 10 seasons.

  109. Because you make more money

  110. if you can hook people on a long story

  111. that just drags on and on and on.

  112. But biblical narratives are concise.

  113. Their literary power comes from conveying much,

  114. much meaning with few words.

  115. There's a simple elegance here

  116. that gives room for our imagination to soar.

  117. So what I want us to do

  118. is step through Genesis chapter 16,

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  119. verse by verse,

  120. and it would be really helpful

  121. if you can have your Bibles open,

  122. because I want you to see the power of this story.

  123. In Genesis 16,

  124. we're picking up the story of Abram

  125. and his wife, Sarai,

  126. which began in chapter 11.

  127. Now in time,

  128. soon God will change their names

  129. to Abraham and Sarah,

  130. the names by which we better remember them.

  131. But for now,

  132. they're still Abram and Sarai.

  133. In chapter 12,

  134. God called Abram to leave his homeland,

  135. his father's household,

  136. journey to the land of Canaan,

  137. and God gave Abram promises.

  138. There were several promises,

  139. but they revolved around two main ideas.

  140. The first idea in the promises God gave Abram

  141. is the idea of nationhood,

  142. that God would make Abram into a great nation,

  143. give many descendants

  144. who would inherit the land of Canaan

  145. as their possession.

  146. The second main idea

  147. in the promises God gave Abram

  148. is the idea of universal blessing.

  149. In you,

  150. all the families of the earth

  151. shall be blessed,

  152. God promised.

  153. Through Abram's family,

  154. the curse of sin would be reversed

  155. and God's blessing would be restored.

  156. But time had passed

  157. and there was a problem.

  158. Chapter 16, verse 1.

  159. Now Sarai, Abram's wife,

  160. had borne him no children.

  161. How could Abram become a great nation

  162. and how could he be a source

  163. of universal blessing

  164. for all the families of the earth

  165. when he himself had not a single offspring?

  166. For God's promises to have any hope of fulfilment,

  167. Abram needed a son.

  168. But Sarai, Abram's wife,

  169. had borne him no children.

  170. Indeed, that obstacle has been evident

  171. from the very beginning,

  172. before God even first called Abram,

  173. from the reading that Sean read out,

  174. Genesis chapter 11, verse 30,

    Genesis 11:30

  175. now Sarai was barren,

  176. she had no child.

  177. So the obstacle of Abram's

  178. and Sarai's childlessness

  179. has been ever-present

  180. throughout their journeying.

  181. But as the weeks and months

  182. and years ticked by,

  183. it weighed more and more heavily upon them.

  184. And so when sometime after arriving in Canaan,

  185. the Lord spoke again to Abram

  186. in chapter 15,

  187. Abram cut to the chase right away.

  188. Just look back at chapter 15.

  189. After these things,

  190. the word of the Lord

  191. came to Abram in a vision.

  192. Fear not, Abram,

  193. I am your shield,

  194. your reward shall be very great.

  195. But Abram said,

  196. O Lord God,

  197. what will you give me?

  198. For I continue childless

  199. and the heir of my house

  200. is Eliezer of Damascus.

  201. And Abram said,

  202. Behold, you've given me no offspring

  203. and a member of my household

  204. will be my heir.

  205. Now on that occasion,

  206. God renewed his promise.

  207. As he promised,

  208. verse 4,

  209. the word of the Lord came to him.

  210. Chapter 15, verse 4,

  211. This man shall not be your heir.

  212. Your very own son shall be your heir.

  213. And he brought him outside and said,

  214. Look toward heaven

  215. and the number of stars,

  216. if you're able to number them.

  217. Then he said to him,

  218. So shall your offspring be.

  219. And at that time,

  220. Genesis 15, verse 6,

    Genesis 15:6

  221. Abram believed the Lord

  222. and he counted it to him

  223. as righteousness.

  224. But still,

  225. the years passed.

  226. Still,

  227. the promise was unfulfilled.

  228. Still,

  229. chapter 16,

  230. Sarai,

  231. Abram's wife,

  232. had borne him no children.

  233. The words of the promise receded into the past,

  234. into memory.

  235. Perhaps it was time to speed things up a bit.

  236. Perhaps it was time to help God keep his promise.

  237. So,

  238. Sarai came up with a plan.

  239. Chapter 16, verse 1,

  240. She had a female Egyptian servant,

  241. whose name was Hagar.

  242. And Sarai said to Abram,

  243. Behold now,

  244. the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.

  245. Go into my servant,

  246. it may be that I shall obtain children by her.

  247. Now,

  248. there are several things we might notice about Sarai's plan.

  249. Let's start with the personal.

  250. It's no surprise

  251. that Sarai deeply feels

  252. the grief of her childlessness.

  253. Not just grief,

  254. but probably some shame too,

  255. given the cultural expectations of her day.

  256. She feels this.

  257. It is painful for her.

  258. A deep grief.

  259. Notice in Sarai's words,

  260. she doesn't mention God's promise.

  261. She doesn't mention God's blessing.

  262. Rather,

  263. she bitterly dwells on what God had withheld.

  264. The Lord has prevented me from bearing children.

  265. I don't think we should judge Sarai too harshly here.

  266. Someone,

  267. whether they're married or unmarried,

  268. who longs for children

  269. and whose longing for children is unfulfilled,

  270. someone in that position like Sarai

  271. will feel the passing of years

  272. in an acutely painful way.

  273. And the Scriptures,

  274. as a whole,

  275. are tender

  276. toward those who experience

  277. the grief of childlessness.

  278. that said,

  279. it's worth noting that everything that follows in chapter 16

  280. begins with Sarai's sense

  281. that God is a miser.

  282. It begins with Sarai's sense

  283. that God has withheld something good from her,

  284. something which she strongly,

  285. and indeed rightly,

  286. desires.

  287. And with this sense

  288. that God has held back

  289. this good thing from her,

  290. Sarai takes matters into her own hands.

  291. I wonder how many of our own

  292. sinful behaviours,

  293. actions,

  294. habits

  295. begin in the same way.

  296. God hasn't given me this,

  297. so I need to get it for myself.

  298. But what about Sarai's plan itself,

  299. this plan she comes up with?

  300. Well, there were no fertility clinics

  301. in the year 2000 BC

  302. or thereabouts,

  303. so Sarai proposes

  304. a rather extreme form of surrogacy.

  305. Abram would take Sarai's maid servant

  306. as a concubine

  307. or as a second and junior wife

  308. and Hagar's children

  309. would be counted as Sarai's children.

  310. That's Sarai's plan.

  311. Now, this strikes us as extreme.

  312. It's worth realising, though,

  313. this kind of surrogacy

  314. was practised at times

  315. in the ancient world,

  316. at least among the nations.

  317. For ancient people

  318. of this time

  319. and in this part of the world,

  320. what Sarai proposes here

  321. was an option.

  322. It was an option.

  323. However, it's an option

  324. that the Bible never endorses,

  325. never endorses using a slave girl

  326. as a surrogate mother,

  327. and it certainly was using her.

  328. And there are a couple of clues

  329. in the text

  330. that Sarai's plan

  331. is not such a good one.

  332. The first red flag

  333. is just that little detail

  334. that Hagar is an Egyptian servant,

  335. an Egyptian servant girl.

  336. It might just trigger a memory

  337. for readers of Genesis

  338. to back in chapter 12,

  339. where there was another episode

  340. where an Egyptian came between

  341. Abram and Sarai in their marriage.

  342. On that occasion,

  343. it was an Egyptian man,

  344. Pharaoh,

  345. and God opposed Pharaoh

  346. by striking Pharaoh's household

  347. with plagues

  348. so that he couldn't insert himself

  349. between Abram and Sarai

  350. in their marriage.

  351. Well, now we find another Egyptian,

  352. a servant girl,

  353. about to be placed in between them.

  354. There's a second warning sign, perhaps,

  355. and that is when Sarai says,

  356. it may be that I shall obtain children by her,

  357. the expression obtain children

  358. is literally the verb to be built.

  359. It may be that I will be built through her.

  360. And it's the same verb

  361. that's used in Genesis chapter 2, verse 22,

    Genesis 2:22

  362. when the Lord God literally built a woman

  363. from the rib taken from Adam.

  364. If Sarai is to be built

  365. in terms of bearing children,

  366. well, it is the Lord who will build her,

  367. not Sarai's scheme.

  368. In any case, this is Sarai's plan,

  369. and you might notice that Abram doesn't argue,

  370. he doesn't put up a fight at all.

  371. Verse 2,

  372. and Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

  373. Just as another husband

  374. had been at a critical earlier moment in Genesis,

  375. Abram is passive

  376. and silent

  377. and entirely complicit.

  378. Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

  379. So after Abram had lived 10 years

  380. in the land of Canaan,

  381. Sarai, Abram's wife,

  382. took Hagar, the Egyptian, her servant,

  383. and gave her to Abram, her husband,

  384. as a wife.

  385. 10 years.

  386. I mean, we can understand

  387. why Sarai was tired of waiting.

  388. But notice in verse 3

  389. that the words Abram's wife

  390. and her husband

  391. tell us no new information.

  392. I mean, you could have,

  393. you could cross those words out of verse 3,

  394. it wouldn't change the sense of it at all,

  395. except that,

  396. what are those words doing?

  397. They're just there to draw attention

  398. to what is relevant,

  399. the information that's relevant.

  400. Sarai, Abram's wife,

  401. gave Hagar to Abram,

  402. her husband.

  403. Can you feel

  404. the text's horror

  405. at what is taking place here?

  406. Likewise,

  407. the Egyptian,

  408. her servant,

  409. adds no new information.

  410. It just tells us

  411. the things we need

  412. to know about Hagar.

  413. The two things

  414. we need to know about her,

  415. that she's an Egyptian,

  416. an outsider,

  417. and that she was a slave girl,

  418. she was powerless.

  419. This is something done to her,

  420. not by her.

  421. But do you notice

  422. something else about verse 3?

  423. Let me just read part of it together

  424. and see if you can pick up

  425. an echo here.

  426. Abram's wife

  427. took Hagar

  428. and gave her

  429. to her husband.

  430. Does that remind you

  431. of anything?

  432. You know,

  433. just as with the expression,

  434. Abram,

  435. listen to the voice

  436. of Sarai,

  437. we have another echo

  438. of Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  439. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  440. the woman

  441. took some of the fruit

  442. and gave it

  443. to her husband.

  444. Do you hear it?

  445. Abram's wife

  446. took

  447. Hagar

  448. and gave her

  449. to her husband.

  450. With just a few words,

  451. Genesis 16

  452. has been framed

  453. as a parallel

  454. to the fall

  455. in Genesis 3.

  456. And once we realise

  457. that,

  458. the similarities

  459. are striking.

  460. There's the same

  461. suspicion

  462. on the part

  463. of the woman

  464. that God

  465. has withheld

  466. something good.

  467. There's the same

  468. passive capitulation

  469. on the part

  470. of the man.

  471. There's the same

  472. taking of matters

  473. into their own hands.

  474. The only thing

  475. missing

  476. is the serpent.

  477. The faith

  478. of Genesis 15

  479. is immediately

  480. followed

  481. by the faithlessness

  482. of Genesis 16.

  483. And Genesis 16

  484. is to Genesis 15

  485. what Genesis 3

  486. is to Genesis 2.

  487. We know

  488. how badly

  489. things turned out

  490. in Genesis 3.

  491. Well,

  492. what's the outcome

  493. here?

  494. Verse 4,

  495. and he,

  496. Abram,

  497. went into Hagar

  498. and she conceived.

  499. Immediately,

  500. Hagar

  501. becomes pregnant.

  502. It seems

  503. almost effortless

  504. after all

  505. the waiting

  506. Abram and Sarai

  507. had had

  508. to that point.

  509. This would,

  510. you think,

  511. be what Sarai

  512. had hoped for.

  513. She wanted

  514. Hagar

  515. to bear children

  516. so that those

  517. children could

  518. be Sarai's.

  519. And Sarai's

  520. grief and shame

  521. would come

  522. to an end

  523. as Hagar

  524. bore children

  525. for her.

  526. But when we

  527. rely on ourselves

  528. and our plans,

  529. we never

  530. make things

  531. better

  532. and quickly

  533. things turn

  534. sour in

  535. Abram's

  536. household.

  537. Verse 4 again,

  538. and when she,

  539. that's Hagar,

  540. saw that she

  541. had conceived,

  542. she looked

  543. with contempt

  544. on her

  545. mistress.

  546. And Sarai

  547. said to

  548. Abram,

  549. may the

  550. wrong done

  551. to me

  552. be on you.

  553. I gave

  554. my servant

  555. to your

  556. embrace,

  557. and when

  558. she saw

  559. that she

  560. had conceived,

  561. she looked

  562. on me

  563. with contempt.

  564. May the

  565. Lord judge

  566. between you

  567. and me.

  568. And Abram

  569. said to

  570. Sarai,

  571. behold,

  572. your servant

  573. is in

  574. your power,

  575. do to

  576. her as

  577. you please.

  578. Then Sarai

  579. dealt

  580. harshly

  581. with her

  582. and she

  583. fled

  584. from her.

  585. Notice

  586. the progression

  587. in verses

  588. 4 to 6,

  589. from Hagar

  590. to Sarai

  591. to Abram,

  592. then back

  593. to Sarai,

  594. then back

  595. to Hagar.

  596. First Hagar

  597. looked with

  598. contempt

  599. on her

  600. mistress.

  601. The servant

  602. girl

  603. understandably

  604. starts to

  605. imagine that

  606. her rank

  607. in the

  608. household

  609. has increased.

  610. Her status

  611. has risen

  612. because she's

  613. the one

  614. who's been

  615. able to

  616. fall pregnant

  617. to Abram

  618. and bear

  619. a conceiver

  620. child for

  621. him.

  622. Rather

  623. than relieve

  624. Sarai's

  625. torment,

  626. Hagar's

  627. pregnancy

  628. has only

  629. increased

  630. it.

  631. Sarai

  632. then,

  633. feeling

  634. tormented

  635. by Hagar,

  636. blames

  637. everything

  638. on her

  639. husband.

  640. You know,

  641. this is

  642. your fault,

  643. the Lord

  644. judged

  645. between

  646. you and

  647. me.

  648. And Abram

  649. is once

  650. again

  651. completely

  652. passive,

  653. he refuses

  654. to accept

  655. any

  656. responsibility,

  657. he just

  658. tries to

  659. appease

  660. his wife

  661. and he

  662. says,

  663. well,

  664. you go

  665. and do

  666. whatever

  667. you want.

  668. so

  669. Sarai

  670. treats

  671. Hagar

  672. so

  673. harshly

  674. that she

  675. runs

  676. away.

  677. I mean,

  678. 16

  679. verses 1

  680. to 6

  681. is an

  682. absolute

  683. train wreck.

  684. Abram and

  685. Sarai blow

  686. it big

  687. time.

  688. Everything

  689. they say

  690. and

  691. everything

  692. they do

  693. is

  694. deplorable.

  695. Doubting

  696. and

  697. forgetting

  698. God's

  699. promises

  700. or

  701. tiring

  702. of

  703. waiting

  704. on

  705. them,

  706. they

  707. take

  708. matters

  709. into

  710. their

  711. own

  712. hands.

  713. They

  714. try

  715. to do

  716. for

  717. themselves

  718. by

  719. very

  720. dubious

  721. means

  722. what

  723. God

  724. had

  725. already

  726. promised.

  727. Galatians

    Galatians 5:6

  728. chapter 5

  729. verse 6

  730. says that

  731. faith

  732. works

  733. through

  734. love.

  735. In

  736. Genesis

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  737. chapter 16

  738. when faith

  739. fails,

  740. love

  741. goes

  742. with

  743. it.

  744. Not

  745. once

  746. do

  747. Abram

  748. or

  749. Sarai

  750. pause

  751. to

  752. consider

  753. Hagar

  754. her

  755. needs,

  756. her

  757. well-being,

  758. her

  759. dignity.

  760. She

  761. is

  762. used,

  763. abused

  764. and

  765. abandoned.

  766. After

  767. the

  768. magnificent

  769. sweeping

  770. promises

  771. of

  772. Genesis

  773. 12

  774. and

  775. 15,

  776. Abram

  777. and

  778. Sarai

  779. quickly

  780. proved

  781. themselves

  782. to be

  783. utterly

  784. unworthy

  785. of the

  786. promises

  787. they

  788. had

  789. received.

  790. And as

  791. we read

  792. this chapter

  793. it is

  794. plain as

  795. day to

  796. us

  797. that the

  798. greater

  799. obstacle

  800. to the

  801. promises

  802. of God

  803. would not

  804. be their

  805. childlessness

  806. but their

  807. faithlessness.

  808. And the

  809. questions these

  810. verses raise

  811. for us

  812. are

  813. can the

  814. plans of

  815. men

  816. derail

  817. the plan

  818. of God?

  819. does

  820. our

  821. faithlessness

  822. nullify

  823. God's

  824. faithfulness?

  825. When

  826. we

  827. wobble

  828. in

  829. faith

  830. as

  831. Abram

  832. and

  833. Sarai

  834. wobbled

  835. does

  836. God

  837. wobble

  838. in

  839. his

  840. commitment?

  841. In

  842. one sense

  843. Genesis

  844. 16

  845. leaves

  846. those

  847. questions

  848. hanging

  849. unanswered.

  850. In

  851. another

  852. sense

  853. though

  854. they'd

  855. already

  856. been

  857. answered.

  858. In

  859. Genesis

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  860. chapter

  861. 15

  862. when

  863. God

  864. renewed

  865. his

  866. promise

  867. to

  868. Abram

  869. when

  870. God

  871. Genesis

    Genesis 15:18

  872. 15

  873. verse

  874. 18

  875. made

  876. a

  877. covenant

  878. with

  879. Abram

  880. the

  881. Lord

  882. bound

  883. no

  884. one

  885. but

  886. himself

  887. he

  888. gave

  889. an

  890. unconditional

  891. promise

  892. promise

  893. that would

  894. not be

  895. revoked

  896. that could

  897. not be

  898. undermined

  899. not even

  900. by the

  901. faltering

  902. faith

  903. of those

  904. who

  905. received

  906. the

  907. promise

  908. what

  909. God

  910. had

  911. promised

  912. he

  913. would

  914. do

  915. and

  916. friends

  917. brothers

  918. sisters

  919. I don't

  920. know about

  921. you but

  922. I actually

  923. find the

  924. betrayal of

  925. Abram

  926. and Sarai

  927. in this

  928. chapter

  929. something

  930. of a

  931. comfort

  932. to me

  933. I mean

  934. here is

  935. the

  936. Bible's

  937. great

  938. hero

  939. of

  940. faith

  941. the

  942. one

  943. the

  944. New

  945. Testament

  946. will

  947. hold

  948. up

  949. as

  950. the

  951. example

  952. of

  953. faith

  954. committing

  955. this

  956. complete

  957. blunder

  958. this

  959. catastrophic

  960. failure

  961. God

  962. and

  963. what

  964. we're

  965. going

  966. to

  967. see

  968. in

  969. Genesis

  970. in

  971. the

  972. weeks

  973. to

  974. come

  975. is

  976. we

  977. are

  978. going

  979. to

  980. see

  981. Abram

  982. Abraham

  983. as he

  984. will

  985. be

  986. grow

  987. in

  988. faith

  989. he

  990. often

  991. gets

  992. things

  993. wrong

  994. but

  995. gradually

  996. over the

  997. course

  998. of his

  999. life

  1000. he

  1001. learns

  1002. that

  1003. God

  1004. is

  1005. trustworthy

  1006. and

  1007. he

  1008. learns

  1009. what

  1010. it

  1011. means

  1012. to

  1013. trust

  1014. a

  1015. trustworthy

  1016. God

  1017. all

  1018. of

  1019. us

  1020. every

  1021. single

  1022. one

  1023. of

  1024. us

  1025. who

  1026. believes

  1027. in

  1028. Jesus

  1029. we're

  1030. like

  1031. the

  1032. man

  1033. in

  1034. the

  1035. gospels

  1036. who

  1037. exclaims

  1038. to

  1039. Jesus

  1040. I

  1041. do

  1042. believe

  1043. help

  1044. my

  1045. unbelief

  1046. like

  1047. Abram

  1048. and

  1049. Sarai

  1050. we

  1051. who

  1052. believe

  1053. are

  1054. believers

  1055. who

  1056. still

  1057. have

  1058. a

  1059. lot

  1060. of

  1061. growing

  1062. in

  1063. faith

  1064. to

  1065. do

  1066. but

  1067. when

  1068. we

  1069. wobble

  1070. in

  1071. our

  1072. faith

  1073. in

  1074. God

  1075. he

  1076. never

  1077. wobbles

  1078. in

  1079. his

  1080. commitment

  1081. to

  1082. us

  1083. what

  1084. secures

  1085. our

  1086. future

  1087. is

  1088. not

  1089. the

  1090. strength

  1091. of

  1092. our

  1093. imperfect

  1094. faith

  1095. but

  1096. the

  1097. unbreakable

  1098. might

  1099. of

  1100. his

  1101. unfailing

  1102. word

  1103. Jesus

  1104. said

  1105. all

  1106. that

  1107. the

  1108. father

  1109. gives

  1110. me

  1111. will

  1112. come

  1113. to

  1114. me

  1115. and

  1116. whoever

  1117. comes

  1118. to

  1119. me

  1120. I

  1121. will

  1122. never

  1123. cast

  1124. out

  1125. God

  1126. does

  1127. not

  1128. need

  1129. our

  1130. help

  1131. to

  1132. keep

  1133. his

  1134. promises

  1135. God

  1136. keeps

  1137. his

  1138. promises

  1139. so

  1140. take

  1141. heart

  1142. take

  1143. heart

  1144. brothers

  1145. and

  1146. sisters

  1147. take

  1148. heart

  1149. believers

  1150. in

  1151. the

  1152. unfailing

  1153. promise

  1154. of

  1155. God

  1156. but

  1157. what

  1158. of

  1159. Hagar

  1160. Hagar

  1161. who'd

  1162. been

  1163. abandoned

  1164. by

  1165. Abraham

  1166. who'd

  1167. been

  1168. mistreated

  1169. by

  1170. Abraham

  1171. who'd

  1172. been

  1173. mistreated

  1174. by

  1175. Sarai

  1176. forced

  1177. to

  1178. flee

  1179. what

  1180. would

  1181. become

  1182. of

  1183. Hagar

  1184. well

  1185. let's

  1186. let's

  1187. briefly

  1188. consider

  1189. in the

  1190. second

  1191. half

  1192. of

  1193. this

  1194. chapter

  1195. what

  1196. becomes

  1197. of

  1198. Hagar

  1199. verse 7

  1200. chapter 16

  1201. verse 7

  1202. the angel

  1203. of the

  1204. Lord

  1205. found her

  1206. by a

  1207. spring

  1208. of water

  1209. in the

  1210. wilderness

  1211. the spring

  1212. on the

  1213. way

  1214. to

  1215. Shur

  1216. now

  1217. Shur

  1218. is in

  1219. the

  1220. northern

  1221. end

  1222. of the

  1223. Sinai

  1224. peninsula

  1225. it

  1226. stands

  1227. between

  1228. Canaan

  1229. and

  1230. Egypt

  1231. so

  1232. Hagar

  1233. it seems

  1234. is

  1235. fleeing

  1236. back

  1237. to her

  1238. homeland

  1239. back

  1240. to

  1241. Egypt

  1242. if

  1243. Abram's

  1244. still

  1245. living

  1246. in

  1247. Hebron

  1248. which is

  1249. the last

  1250. place

  1251. that he'd

  1252. been

  1253. sort of

  1254. given

  1255. that we've

  1256. been told

  1257. he's living

  1258. in

  1259. Genesis

  1260. if he's

  1261. still

  1262. living

  1263. there

  1264. she may

  1265. already

  1266. have

  1267. covered

  1268. around

  1269. about

  1270. 110

  1271. kilometres

  1272. on her

  1273. journey

  1274. back

  1275. to

  1276. Egypt

  1277. she's

  1278. pregnant

  1279. she's

  1280. vulnerable

  1281. she's

  1282. alone

  1283. and she's

  1284. been

  1285. travelling

  1286. through

  1287. inhospitable

  1288. terrain

  1289. but she's

  1290. not

  1291. forgotten

  1292. not

  1293. by

  1294. God

  1295. the

  1296. angel

  1297. of the

  1298. Lord

  1299. found

  1300. her

  1301. by a

  1302. spring

  1303. of

  1304. water

  1305. in the

  1306. wilderness

  1307. in

  1308. verse

  1309. 8

  1310. and he

  1311. said

  1312. Hagar

  1313. servant

  1314. of

  1315. Sarai

  1316. where

  1317. have

  1318. you

  1319. come

  1320. from

  1321. and

  1322. where

  1323. are

  1324. you

  1325. going

  1326. she

  1327. said

  1328. I'm

  1329. fleeing

  1330. from

  1331. my

  1332. mistress

  1333. Sarai

  1334. now

  1335. the

  1336. angel

  1337. of

  1338. the

  1339. Lord

  1340. presumably

  1341. knows

  1342. exactly

  1343. where

  1344. she's

  1345. come

  1346. from

  1347. and

  1348. exactly

  1349. where

  1350. she's

  1351. going

  1352. he

  1353. addresses

  1354. her

  1355. for

  1356. starters

  1357. as

  1358. Hagar

  1359. servant

  1360. of

  1361. Sarai

  1362. he

  1363. knows

  1364. who

  1365. she

  1366. is

  1367. he

  1368. came

  1369. looking

  1370. for

  1371. her

  1372. he

  1373. found

  1374. her

  1375. the

  1376. Lord

  1377. found

  1378. her

  1379. so

  1380. he

  1381. knows

  1382. the

  1383. answer

  1384. to

  1385. the

  1386. question

  1387. before

  1388. he

  1389. asks

  1390. it

  1391. but

  1392. by

  1393. asking

  1394. !

  1395. the

  1396. angel

  1397. of

  1398. the

  1399. angel

  1400. of

  1401. Sarai

  1402. to

  1403. share

  1404. her

  1405. own

  1406. mind

  1407. Hagar's

  1408. voice

  1409. is

  1410. heard

  1411. for

  1412. the

  1413. first

  1414. time

  1415. in

  1416. the

  1417. chapter

  1418. a

  1419. dignity

  1420. that

  1421. Abram

  1422. and

  1423. Sarai

  1424. never

  1425. afforded

  1426. her

  1427. but

  1428. the

  1429. angel's

  1430. next

  1431. response

  1432. might

  1433. surprise

  1434. us

  1435. verse

  1436. 9

  1437. the

  1438. angel

  1439. of

  1440. the

  1441. Lord

  1442. said

  1443. to

  1444. her

  1445. return

  1446. to

  1447. your

  1448. mistress

  1449. and

  1450. submit

  1451. to

  1452. her

  1453. the

  1454. angel

  1455. sends

  1456. Hagar

  1457. back

  1458. to

  1459. Sarai

  1460. in

  1461. fact

  1462. the

  1463. language

  1464. here

  1465. is

  1466. even

  1467. more

  1468. striking

  1469. in

  1470. Hebrew

  1471. than

  1472. in

  1473. English

  1474. I

  1475. won't

  1476. go

  1477. into

  1478. the

  1479. details

  1480. but

  1481. verse

  1482. 9

  1483. directly

  1484. echoes

  1485. a

  1486. couple

  1487. of

  1488. phrases

  1489. in

  1490. verse

  1491. 6

  1492. where

  1493. Abram

  1494. says

  1495. to

  1496. Sarai

  1497. your

  1498. servant

  1499. is

  1500. in

  1501. your

  1502. power

  1503. and

  1504. where

  1505. the

  1506. narrator

  1507. tells

  1508. us

  1509. Sarai

  1510. dealt

  1511. harshly

  1512. with

  1513. her

  1514. well

  1515. the

  1516. language

  1517. here

  1518. is

  1519. echoing

  1520. those

  1521. phrases

  1522. !

  1523. He

  1524. makes

  1525. it

  1526. clear

  1527. that

  1528. what

  1529. he's

  1530. asking

  1531. Hagar

  1532. to

  1533. do

  1534. going

  1535. back

  1536. to

  1537. Sarai

  1538. to

  1539. submit

  1540. to

  1541. her

  1542. would

  1543. not

  1544. be

  1545. easy

  1546. so

  1547. what's

  1548. going

  1549. on

  1550. here

  1551. if

  1552. you

  1553. were

  1554. to

  1555. adopt

  1556. the

  1557. most

  1558. critical

  1559. stance

  1560. you

  1561. might

  1562. say

  1563. God

  1564. is

  1565. sending

  1566. her

  1567. back

  1568. to

  1569. a

  1570. potentially

  1571. abusive

  1572. household

  1573. enabling

  1574. her

  1575. mistreatment

  1576. but

  1577. if

  1578. we

  1579. don't

  1580. adopt

  1581. that

  1582. stance

  1583. and

  1584. I

  1585. want

  1586. to

  1587. be

  1588. very

  1589. very

  1590. clear

  1591. this

  1592. is

  1593. absolutely

  1594. not

  1595. a

  1596. general

  1597. command

  1598. that

  1599. women

  1600. fleeing

  1601. abusive

  1602. homes

  1603. should

  1604. be

  1605. sent

  1606. back

  1607. to

  1608. them

  1609. that's

  1610. not

  1611. what's

  1612. going

  1613. on

  1614. here

  1615. this

  1616. is

  1617. a

  1618. specific

  1619. situation

  1620. it's

  1621. descriptive

  1622. not

  1623. prescriptive

  1624. but

  1625. it's

  1626. still

  1627. surprising

  1628. even

  1629. unsettling

  1630. so

  1631. what

  1632. do

  1633. we

  1634. make

  1635. of

  1636. it

  1637. well

  1638. I

  1639. think

  1640. this

  1641. little

  1642. section

  1643. this

  1644. section

  1645. here

  1646. from

  1647. verse

  1648. 9

  1649. to

  1650. 12

  1651. of

  1652. chapter

  1653. 16

  1654. vaguely

  1655. parallels

  1656. chapter

  1657. 12

  1658. verses

  1659. 1

  1660. to

  1661. 3

  1662. so

  1663. you

  1664. remember

  1665. in

  1666. Genesis

    Genesis 12:1

  1667. chapter

  1668. 12

  1669. verse

  1670. 1

  1671. the

  1672. Lord

  1673. sent

  1674. Abram

  1675. he

  1676. commands

  1677. him

  1678. to

  1679. go

  1680. out

  1681. from

  1682. his

  1683. country

  1684. his

  1685. people

  1686. his

  1687. father's

  1688. household

  1689. to

  1690. the

  1691. land

  1692. of

  1693. Canaan

  1694. well

  1695. now

  1696. here

  1697. in

  1698. chapter

  1699. 16

  1700. verse

  1701. 9

  1702. the

  1703. Lord

  1704. sends

  1705. Hagar

  1706. turns

  1707. her

  1708. back

  1709. from

  1710. her

  1711. native

  1712. country

  1713. from

  1714. the

  1715. people

  1716. of

  1717. Egypt

  1718. back

  1719. to

  1720. Canaan

  1721. back

  1722. to

  1723. rejoin

  1724. Abram's

  1725. household

  1726. both

  1727. sendings

  1728. that in

  1729. chapter

  1730. 12

  1731. that in

  1732. chapter

  1733. 16

  1734. were

  1735. difficult

  1736. to

  1737. obey

  1738. both

  1739. sendings

  1740. called

  1741. for

  1742. faith

  1743. and

  1744. in

  1745. both

  1746. chapter

  1747. 12

  1748. and

  1749. chapter

  1750. 16

  1751. the

  1752. sending

  1753. is

  1754. followed

  1755. by

  1756. a

  1757. promise

  1758. here

  1759. in

  1760. chapter

  1761. 16

  1762. return

  1763. to your

  1764. mistress

  1765. and submit

  1766. to her

  1767. verse 10

  1768. the angel

  1769. of the

  1770. Lord

  1771. also said

  1772. to her

  1773. I will

  1774. surely

  1775. multiply

  1776. your

  1777. offspring

  1778. so that

  1779. they cannot

  1780. be numbered

  1781. for multitude

  1782. and the angel

  1783. of the Lord

  1784. said to her

  1785. behold you

  1786. are pregnant

  1787. and shall

  1788. bear a

  1789. son

  1790. and you

  1791. shall

  1792. call his

  1793. name

  1794. Ishmael

  1795. because the

  1796. Lord has

  1797. listened

  1798. to your

  1799. affliction

  1800. he shall

  1801. be a wild

  1802. donkey

  1803. of a

  1804. man

  1805. his hand

  1806. against

  1807. everyone

  1808. and everyone's

  1809. hand

  1810. against him

  1811. and he

  1812. shall dwell

  1813. over against

  1814. all his

  1815. kinsmen

  1816. before we

  1817. look at the

  1818. details of

  1819. the promise

  1820. notice in

  1821. passing

  1822. three times

  1823. verse 9

  1824. verse 10

  1825. verse 11

  1826. we read

  1827. the angel

  1828. of the Lord

  1829. said to her

  1830. again another

  1831. example of

  1832. repetition

  1833. that isn't

  1834. actually required

  1835. to make sense

  1836. of what's

  1837. taking place

  1838. here

  1839. but it's

  1840. it's repeated

  1841. three times

  1842. so that we

  1843. realize

  1844. that here

  1845. the Lord

  1846. who on

  1847. multiple

  1848. occasions

  1849. had spoken

  1850. to Abram

  1851. is speaking

  1852. to this

  1853. lowly

  1854. lonely

  1855. Egyptian

  1856. slave girl

  1857. but what

  1858. are the

  1859. promises

  1860. that the

  1861. Lord makes

  1862. to Hagar

  1863. here

  1864. some are

  1865. positive

  1866. some are

  1867. a bit

  1868. ambivalent

  1869. the positive

  1870. verse 10

  1871. offspring

  1872. that cannot

  1873. be numbered

  1874. for multitude

  1875. it sounds a bit

  1876. like the promise

  1877. given to Abram

  1878. in chapter 15

  1879. could it be

  1880. that God's

  1881. promises to

  1882. Abram

  1883. would be

  1884. fulfilled

  1885. through the

  1886. son of

  1887. Hagar

  1888. also positive

  1889. is verse 11

  1890. the name

  1891. that

  1892. Hagar

  1893. is to give

  1894. her son

  1895. Ishmael

  1896. means God

  1897. hears

  1898. and the

  1899. explanation

  1900. is because

  1901. the Lord

  1902. has listened

  1903. to your

  1904. affliction

  1905. the birth

  1906. of this

  1907. son

  1908. the promise

  1909. of

  1910. that he

  1911. would

  1912. become

  1913. a multitude

  1914. of

  1915. descendants

  1916. these

  1917. were

  1918. God's

  1919. kindness

  1920. and mercy

  1921. to Hagar

  1922. in the

  1923. midst of

  1924. her

  1925. hardship

  1926. he

  1927. listened

  1928. to her

  1929. affliction

  1930. this

  1931. son

  1932. would

  1933. turn out

  1934. you see

  1935. not to

  1936. be a

  1937. gift

  1938. for

  1939. Sarai

  1940. as

  1941. Sarai

  1942. had

  1943. planned

  1944. but rather

  1945. a gift

  1946. to her

  1947. slave

  1948. girl

  1949. Hagar

  1950. more

  1951. ambivalent

  1952. is the

  1953. promise

  1954. in verse 12

  1955. a wild

  1956. donkey

  1957. of a

  1958. man

  1959. hand

  1960. against

  1961. everyone

  1962. you remember

  1963. from chapter

  1964. 12

  1965. that

  1966. Abram's

  1967. family

  1968. line

  1969. was to

  1970. be a

  1971. source

  1972. of

  1973. blessing

  1974. for all

  1975. the

  1976. families

  1977. of the

  1978. earth

  1979. Hagar's

  1980. son

  1981. Ishmael

  1982. would be

  1983. a much

  1984. more

  1985. divisive

  1986. figure

  1987. a focal

  1988. point

  1989. not of

  1990. blessing

  1991. but of

  1992. hostility

  1993. who would

  1994. dwell

  1995. over

  1996. against

  1997. all

  1998. his

  1999. brothers

  2000. universal

  2001. blessing

  2002. you see

  2003. would not

  2004. come

  2005. through

  2006. this

  2007. line

  2008. the

  2009. line

  2010. of

  2011. Ishmael

  2012. rather

  2013. like

  2014. the rest

  2015. of the

  2016. nations

  2017. the

  2018. descendants

  2019. of

  2020. Ishmael

  2021. the

  2022. hope

  2023. for

  2024. blessing

  2025. for

  2026. Ishmael's

  2027. line

  2028. would be

  2029. the

  2030. line

  2031. of

  2032. another

  2033. son

  2034. of

  2035. Abram

  2036. and

  2037. so I

  2038. think

  2039. the

  2040. significance

  2041. of

  2042. God

  2043. sending

  2044. Hagar

  2045. back

  2046. to

  2047. Abram

  2048. and

  2049. Sarai

  2050. is

  2051. not

  2052. just

  2053. the

  2054. physical

  2055. and

  2056. material

  2057. security

  2058. that

  2059. that

  2060. household

  2061. would

  2062. provide

  2063. for

  2064. her

  2065. that

  2066. I

  2067. mean

  2068. she

  2069. was

  2070. in

  2071. a

  2072. very

  2073. vulnerable

  2074. position

  2075. pregnant

  2076. runaway

  2077. slave

  2078. nothing

  2079. no

  2080. possessions

  2081. or

  2082. anything

  2083. to her

  2084. name

  2085. very

  2086. vulnerable

  2087. position

  2088. but

  2089. the

  2090. significance

  2091. of

  2092. her

  2093. returning

  2094. to

  2095. Abram

  2096. and

  2097. Sarai's

  2098. household

  2099. is

  2100. less

  2101. that

  2102. material

  2103. security

  2104. but

  2105. that

  2106. God

  2107. is

  2108. sending

  2109. Hagar

  2110. back

  2111. to

  2112. the

  2113. place

  2114. of

  2115. blessing

  2116. back

  2117. to

  2118. the

  2119. family

  2120. through

  2121. whom

  2122. God

  2123. had

  2124. promised

  2125. to

  2126. bring

  2127. blessing

  2128. to

  2129. all

  2130. the

  2131. families

  2132. of

  2133. the

  2134. earth

  2135. she

  2136. had

  2137. been

  2138. driven

  2139. out

  2140. by

  2141. Abram

  2142. and

  2143. Sarai's

  2144. cruelty

  2145. she

  2146. was

  2147. invited

  2148. back

  2149. by

  2150. the

  2151. Lord's

  2152. kindness

  2153. and

  2154. Hagar

  2155. responds

  2156. in

  2157. verse

  2158. 13

  2159. so

  2160. she

  2161. called

  2162. the

  2163. name

  2164. of

  2165. the

  2166. Lord

  2167. who

  2168. spoke

  2169. to

  2170. her

  2171. you

  2172. are

  2173. a

  2174. God

  2175. of

  2176. seeing

  2177. for

  2178. she

  2179. said

  2180. truly

  2181. here

  2182. I

  2183. have

  2184. seen

  2185. him

  2186. who

  2187. looks

  2188. after

  2189. me

  2190. therefore

  2191. the

  2192. well

  2193. was

  2194. called

  2195. Beelahairoi

  2196. that

  2197. means

  2198. the

  2199. well

  2200. of

  2201. the

  2202. living

  2203. one

  2204. who

  2205. sees

  2206. me

  2207. it

  2208. lies

  2209. between

  2210. Kadesh

  2211. and

  2212. Bered

  2213. Hagar

  2214. powerless

  2215. mistreated

  2216. afflicted

  2217. this

  2218. nobody

  2219. in the

  2220. story

  2221. of

  2222. Abram

  2223. and

  2224. Sarai

  2225. was

  2226. seen

  2227. and

  2228. heard

  2229. by

  2230. God

  2231. I'm

  2232. going to

  2233. return to

  2234. that in

  2235. a moment

  2236. but first

  2237. let's

  2238. just

  2239. briefly

  2240. consider

  2241. the

  2242. outcome

  2243. in

  2244. verses

  2245. 15

  2246. and

  2247. 16

  2248. Hagar

  2249. does

  2250. clearly

  2251. return

  2252. to

  2253. Abram

  2254. because

  2255. we read

  2256. in

  2257. verse

  2258. 16

  2259. and

  2260. Hagar

  2261. bore

  2262. Abram

  2263. a son

  2264. and

  2265. Abram

  2266. called

  2267. the name

  2268. of his

  2269. son

  2270. whom

  2271. Hagar

  2272. bore

  2273. Abram

  2274. was 86

  2275. years

  2276. old

  2277. when

  2278. Hagar

  2279. bore

  2280. Ishmael

  2281. to

  2282. Abram

  2283. notice

  2284. the number

  2285. of times

  2286. we hear

  2287. the names

  2288. Abram

  2289. and

  2290. Hagar

  2291. in

  2292. these

  2293. two

  2294. verses

  2295. the

  2296. one

  2297. name

  2298. we

  2299. don't

  2300. hear

  2301. is

  2302. the

  2303. name

  2304. Sarai

  2305. there's

  2306. no mention

  2307. of her

  2308. Sarai's

  2309. plan

  2310. had

  2311. failed

  2312. this

  2313. son

  2314. is

  2315. Abram's

  2316. and

  2317. Hagar's

  2318. not

  2319. Sarai's

  2320. Sarai

  2321. no doubt

  2322. continued

  2323. to feel

  2324. the grief

  2325. of that

  2326. but as

  2327. things would

  2328. turn out

  2329. that was

  2330. not because

  2331. the Lord

  2332. was being

  2333. unkind

  2334. to

  2335. Sarai

  2336. or

  2337. miserly

  2338. toward

  2339. her

  2340. it was

  2341. just

  2342. that God

  2343. had in

  2344. fact

  2345. planned

  2346. better

  2347. things

  2348. for

  2349. Sarai

  2350. although

  2351. Sarai

  2352. herself

  2353. didn't

  2354. realise

  2355. that yet

  2356. but that's

  2357. to get

  2358. ahead of

  2359. ourselves

  2360. I want

  2361. to close

  2362. with a

  2363. contrast

  2364. we see

  2365. in chapter

  2366. 16

  2367. between

  2368. those

  2369. two

  2370. women

  2371. Sarai

  2372. and

  2373. Hagar

  2374. Sarai

  2375. focused

  2376. on what

  2377. God

  2378. had not

  2379. given

  2380. her

  2381. taking

  2382. matters

  2383. into

  2384. her

  2385. own

  2386. hands

  2387. and her

  2388. plans

  2389. failing

  2390. Hagar

  2391. !

  2392. Hagar

  2393. enabled

  2394. by

  2395. God's

  2396. promise

  2397. to her

  2398. to go

  2399. back

  2400. into a

  2401. difficult

  2402. situation

  2403. in

  2404. obedience

  2405. to

  2406. his

  2407. command

  2408. it

  2409. was

  2410. enough

  2411. for

  2412. Hagar

  2413. to

  2414. say

  2415. God

  2416. has

  2417. seen

  2418. me

  2419. God

  2420. has

  2421. seen

  2422. me

  2423. you

  2424. know

  2425. I

  2426. think

  2427. I

  2428. believe

  2429. verse

  2430. 13

  2431. may

  2432. actually

  2433. be

  2434. the

  2435. only

  2436. place

  2437. in

  2438. the

  2439. entire

  2440. Bible

  2441. where

  2442. someone

  2443. other

  2444. than

  2445. God

  2446. gives

  2447. a

  2448. name

  2449. to

  2450. God

  2451. where

  2452. God

  2453. is

  2454. named

  2455. by

  2456. someone

  2457. other

  2458. than

  2459. God

  2460. himself

  2461. there

  2462. are

  2463. many

  2464. times

  2465. of

  2466. course

  2467. when

  2468. God

  2469. gives

  2470. new

  2471. names

  2472. to

  2473. people

  2474. he'll

  2475. do

  2476. that

  2477. for

  2478. Abraham

  2479. and

  2480. Sarai

  2481. shortly

  2482. there

  2483. are

  2484. places

  2485. where

  2486. God

  2487. declares

  2488. his

  2489. own

  2490. name

  2491. so

  2492. that

  2493. we

  2494. can

  2495. call

  2496. him

  2497. by

  2498. the

  2499. names

  2500. he

  2501. gives

  2502. us

  2503. but

  2504. here

  2505. alone

  2506. do

  2507. we

  2508. have

  2509. a

  2510. human

  2511. given

  2512. the

  2513. honour

  2514. of

  2515. assigning

  2516. a

  2517. name

  2518. to

  2519. God

  2520. verse

  2521. 13

  2522. so

  2523. she

  2524. called

  2525. the

  2526. name

  2527. of

  2528. the

  2529. Lord

  2530. who

  2531. spoke

  2532. to

  2533. her

  2534. you

  2535. are

  2536. a

  2537. God

  2538. of

  2539. seeing

  2540. for

  2541. she

  2542. said

  2543. truly

  2544. here

  2545. have

  2546. I

  2547. seen

  2548. him

  2549. who

  2550. sees

  2551. me

  2552. it is

  2553. this

  2554. desperate

  2555. Egyptian

  2556. slave

  2557. girl

  2558. who

  2559. wondrously

  2560. came to

  2561. know

  2562. that

  2563. God

  2564. saw

  2565. her

  2566. even

  2567. in

  2568. her

  2569. loneliness

  2570. and

  2571. desolation

  2572. and

  2573. affliction

  2574. what a

  2575. comfort it

  2576. is

  2577. that the

  2578. Lord God

  2579. is the

  2580. God

  2581. who

  2582. sees

  2583. the

  2584. God

  2585. who

  2586. sees

  2587. will you

  2588. pray

  2589. with

  2590. me

  2591. heavenly

  2592. father

  2593. you

  2594. have

  2595. given

  2596. us

  2597. many

  2598. great

  2599. and

  2600. precious

  2601. promises

  2602. in

  2603. your

  2604. word

  2605. and

  2606. through

  2607. the

  2608. Lord

  2609. Jesus

  2610. Christ

  2611. we

  2612. thank you

  2613. Lord

  2614. God

  2615. that

  2616. you

  2617. are

  2618. faithful

  2619. and

  2620. you

  2621. will

  2622. keep

  2623. every

  2624. promise

  2625. you

  2626. have

  2627. given

  2628. us

  2629. we

  2630. know

  2631. that

  2632. our

  2633. faith

  2634. is

  2635. imperfect

  2636. so

  2637. thank

  2638. you

  2639. that

  2640. when

  2641. we

  2642. wobble

  2643. in

  2644. our

  2645. faith

  2646. you

  2647. never

  2648. wobble

  2649. in

  2650. your

  2651. commitment

  2652. to

  2653. us

  2654. please

  2655. as

  2656. you

  2657. taught

  2658. Abram

  2659. and

  2660. Sarai

  2661. to

  2662. trust

  2663. you

  2664. we

  2665. pray

  2666. that

  2667. you

  2668. would

  2669. teach

  2670. us

  2671. grow

  2672. us

  2673. in

  2674. faith

  2675. show

  2676. us

  2677. that

  2678. we

  2679. can

  2680. believe

  2681. you

  2682. in

  2683. everything

  2684. you

  2685. have

  2686. said

  2687. that

  2688. we

  2689. might

  2690. cling

  2691. to

  2692. you

  2693. we

  2694. thank

  2695. you

  2696. Lord

  2697. God

  2698. that

  2699. you

  2700. are

  2701. the

  2702. God

  2703. who

  2704. sees

  2705. you

  2706. see

  2707. our

  2708. affliction

  2709. you

  2710. do

  2711. not

  2712. leave

  2713. us

  2714. alone

  2715. in

  2716. our

  2717. affliction

  2718. but

  2719. you

  2720. are

  2721. with

  2722. us

  2723. you

  2724. comfort

  2725. us

  2726. and

  2727. you

  2728. give

  2729. us

  2730. your

  2731. promises

  2732. as

  2733. a

  2734. hope

  2735. to

  2736. which

  2737. we

  2738. may

  2739. cling

  2740. we

  2741. thank

  2742. you

  2743. for

  2744. the

  2745. way

  2746. that

  2747. in

  2748. your

  2749. son

  2750. you

  2751. entered

  2752. into

  2753. this

  2754. world

  2755. and

  2756. into

  2757. our

  2758. affliction

  2759. and

  2760. our

  2761. suffering

  2762. so

  2763. that

  2764. the

  2765. curse

  2766. of

  2767. sin

  2768. might

  2769. be

  2770. removed

  2771. and

  2772. we

  2773. might

  2774. receive

  2775. your

  2776. promised

  2777. blessing

  2778. and

  2779. so

  2780. we

  2781. pray

  2782. that

  2783. we

  2784. might

  2785. dwell

  2786. and

  2787. delight

  2788. in

  2789. your

  2790. comfort

  2791. and

  2792. the

  2793. certainty

  2794. of

  2795. your

  2796. word

  2797. to

  2798. us

  2799. in

  2800. Jesus

  2801. name

  2802. we

  2803. pray

  2804. !

  2805. to
