  1. Today our reading is from Genesis chapter 17 and it's the full chapter so yeah settled in for a bit of a long read.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  2. Then Abram fell on his face and God said to him,

  3. Behold, my covenant is with you and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.

  4. No longer shall your name be called Abram but your name shall be Abraham for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

  5. I will make you exceedingly fruitful and I'll make you into nations and kings shall come from you.

  6. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout the generations for an everlasting covenant to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

  7. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession.

  8. And I will be their God.

  9. And God said to Abraham,

  10. As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout the generations.

  11. This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you and your offspring after you.

  12. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

  13. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

  14. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised.

  15. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,

  16. both he who is born in your house and he who is born with your money shall be circumcised.

  17. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.

  18. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people.

  19. He has broken my covenant.

  20. And God said to Abraham,

  21. As for Sarai, your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.

  22. I will bless her and moreover I will give you a son by her.

  23. I will bless her and she shall become nations.

  24. Kings of people shall come from her.

  25. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself,

  26. Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?

  27. Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?

  28. And Abraham said to God,

  29. Oh, that Ishmael might live before you.

  30. God said,

  31. No, but Sarah, your wife, shall bear you a son.

  32. And you shall call his name Isaac.

  33. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

  34. As for Ishmael, I have heard you.

  35. I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly.

  36. He shall father twelve princes and I will make him into a great nation.

  37. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.

  38. When he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

  39. Then Abraham took Ishmael, his son, and all those who were born in his house, all bought with money.

  40. Every male among the men of Abraham's house.

  41. And he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.

  42. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

  43. And Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

  44. That very day, Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.

  45. And all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner,

  46. were circumcised with him.

  47. This is God's word. May he bless it to us today.

  48. Good morning, everyone.

  49. It would be a great help if you have your Bibles open at Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  50. And also, if you have an outline, I think that may assist you this morning as well.

  51. Now, if you do have an outline, which is in the bulletin there,

  52. it may feel ominously long and detailed.

  53. It is there to help you follow the flow of thought in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  54. I'll be spending more time speaking about the first half of the outline than the second half.

  55. So don't get too nervous.

  56. But yeah, it will just help you follow the flow of ideas.

  57. And I'll be stepping through most of the ideas on that outline bit by bit as we go through the text of Genesis 17.

  58. Now, Genesis 17 is a chapter of monumental significance,

  59. which reverberates through the rest of the Bible.

  60. Genesis 17, it may not have quite the same human drama as chapter 16,

  61. which we looked at last week.

  62. But in the scheme of the Bible's unfolding story,

  63. Genesis 17, chapter 17, is by far the more important.

  64. It's the first time in this chapter that we hear the name Abraham.

  65. We've met him before, of course, by a different name, by the name Abram.

  66. But this is Abraham is the name by which he will be known throughout the rest of the scriptures.

  67. The name which we mentioned 73 times in the New Testament,

  68. second only to Moses as an Old Testament figure in the New Testament.

  69. The first mention in the Bible of circumcision.

  70. Genesis chapter 17, in this chapter, the word covenant occurs more times than in any other chapter in the Bible.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  71. Thirteen times the word covenant occurs in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  72. The closest any other chapter in the Bible gets is seven.

  73. There's a lot going on in Genesis 17.

  74. So I want to give you something to hang on to as we get into it.

  75. And what I'm going to give you to hang on to is five speeches, four names, one promise.

  76. Five speeches, four names, one promise.

  77. The covenant God announces in this chapter unfolds over five speeches.

  78. Five times the speech of God is introduced.

  79. In four of those five speeches, God gives someone a new name.

  80. Simon spoke about a couple of those in the kids' talk.

  81. And those names are keys which unlock the key ideas, the key themes of the covenant in this chapter.

  82. But everything God says, all five speeches, all four new names, are all for the sake of one staggering promise.

  83. Five speeches, four names, one promise.

  84. Now God makes various promises in this chapter and many more throughout the Bible.

  85. But of every promise God has given, there is one specific promise in this chapter that I would suggest is the most important promise of all.

  86. It's the most important promise because it is the whole point of every other promise.

  87. And in the Bible we hear it for the first time in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  88. So let's get into this chapter together.

  89. Five speeches, four names, one promise.

  90. It begins in verse 1, when Abram was 99 years old.

  91. Now 13 years had passed since the end of chapter 16.

  92. 13 years had passed since Abram's son Ishmael was born to Hagar.

  93. And Hagar, if you were here last week, you will remember, was an Egyptian servant girl who belonged to Abram's wife Sarai.

  94. It's been 13 years with Abram, his wife Sarai, Ishmael and Hagar living together under the one roof, so to speak.

  95. 13 years, we might imagine, of some domestic tension.

  96. But nonetheless, at the end of those 13 years, at age 99, as an old man, Abram probably thought that the most important events of his life were past.

  97. God had given him promises in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  98. He had journeyed to the land of Canaan.

  99. He had defeated a coalition of eastern kings in chapter 14.

  100. God had made a covenant with him in chapter 15.

  101. And we had the birth of Ishmael in chapter 16.

  102. The major events of Abram's life seem complete.

  103. He has a son.

  104. He has an heir.

  105. Sure, it may have come about in an awkward way, but his line would continue.

  106. God's promises would continue.

  107. But God was about to interrupt Abram's thoughts.

  108. And so we come to the first of God's five speeches in this chapter.

  109. Verse 1.

  110. First, God says, I am God Almighty.

  111. In Hebrew, El Shaddai.

  112. I am El Shaddai.

  113. This is the first of the four new names in this chapter.

  114. God identifies himself here as El Shaddai for the first time in the Bible.

  115. And that's not the most common name for God in the Bible.

  116. I think it occurs 48 times through the Old Testament, mostly in the book of Job.

  117. It pops up at some significant places in Genesis.

  118. And there is some uncertainty about how it should be translated, El Shaddai.

  119. But God Almighty is probably close to the mark.

  120. Or maybe, as the New English translation has it, the sovereign God.

  121. El is easy.

  122. That just means God.

  123. What about Shaddai?

  124. Well, I think the most likely suggestions for Shaddai are that it's related to either the Hebrew word for sufficiency

  125. or to a Hebrew word to destroy and overpower, a word for strength.

  126. Either way, here is a name that suggests God's absolute power, sovereignty and strength.

  127. The early Christian scholar, Jerome, 4th century scholar who translated the Hebrew Old Testament

  128. into a Latin version called the Vulgate, he consistently translated this word Shaddai with the Latin word omnipotence.

  129. El Shaddai is not a God to be trifled with.

  130. He is a God who can do whatever he wishes.

  131. I am El Shaddai.

  132. And what El Shaddai had for Abram in this first speech was a two-part command and a two-part promise.

  133. And in each case, the two parts work together really to convey a single idea.

  134. So first the command, walk before me and be blameless.

  135. God calls Abram to allegiance, obedience and moral integrity.

  136. Walk before me and be blameless.

  137. And what follows is a two-part promise that I may make my covenant between me and you and may multiply you greatly.

  138. Now let me say something in general about covenants and then we'll look at the specifics of this particular covenant.

  139. A covenant in the Bible is a solemn agreement which establishes a lasting relationship.

  140. It's similar to a contract, we have contracts today, but contracts in our context have a very different spirit to the covenants God makes in the Bible.

  141. Contracts, our modern day contracts, are transactional.

  142. They're agreements that serve the self-interest of each party.

  143. They're limited, narrow and clearly defined in scope.

  144. But God's covenants are deeper and much more open-ended than that.

  145. So my wife and my family, we've just moved house.

  146. But at our old house, some years ago, we were doing some renovation work and we engaged a plumber by the name of Anthony.

  147. And Anthony had just started a new business.

  148. We were one of Anthony's first customers.

  149. The first invoice we received from Anthony was number 20.

  150. His invoice number 20.

  151. And we got Anthony, you know, I got on well with Anthony.

  152. He was a hard worker.

  153. We seemed to have a good relationship.

  154. He charged reasonable prices.

  155. He did a good job.

  156. We got him to do more and more work.

  157. We had invoices 20, then 22, then 34, then 52, then 86.

  158. Five of his first hundred invoices written out to us.

  159. We must have been a significant customer for Anthony in the early years of his business.

  160. So we stuck with Anthony from then on.

  161. But over the years, things changed.

  162. His business grew.

  163. We stopped seeing Anthony.

  164. Someone else would answer the phone when we rang.

  165. Someone else would come out to our house to attend a job, a junior plumber.

  166. The fees increased.

  167. The invoice numbers rose.

  168. The most recent invoice we received this year was number 21,340.

  169. The reality is, although my relationship with Anthony was warm, it was only ever transactional.

  170. You do this for me and I'll do that for you.

  171. You unclog our drains and I'll pay your fee.

  172. A lot of people have a transactional approach to God.

  173. Heal me of this affliction and I'll start going to church.

  174. Give me a wife and I'll consider missionary service.

  175. Or maybe we put it around the other way.

  176. God, I've been giving money to church and a mission.

  177. You owe it to me, God, to make my business prosper.

  178. Much ancient religion was transactional in nature.

  179. But El Shaddai does not make contracts.

  180. He makes covenants.

  181. And his words in verses 1 and 2 are more marriage proposal than business deal.

  182. He calls Abram to complete wholehearted allegiance and promises to bind himself to Abram in a covenant.

  183. A covenant that's summarized in the words that I may multiply you greatly.

  184. Now God had already made one covenant with Abram in chapter 15.

  185. The covenant to your descendants I give this land.

  186. But here in chapter 17 he proposes a second covenant.

  187. Or at the very least an expansion of the covenant.

  188. A covenant upgrade.

  189. Now why do I say this is a second covenant or at least a covenant upgrade?

  190. Because the covenant in chapter 17 is future, not past.

  191. The one in chapter 15 is already given.

  192. But this one in chapter 17, when God announces it here in verse 2, it hasn't yet been made.

  193. It's not yet ratified.

  194. He proposes giving Abram this covenant.

  195. But first Abram must walk before him and be blameless.

  196. Chapter 17 is the engagement.

  197. The marriage is yet to come.

  198. So the Lord appeared to Abram with this searching command and this priceless promise.

  199. And Abram did what we might expect a human being to do, a mere mortal to do in the presence of El Shaddai.

  200. Verse 3, he fell on his face.

  201. Which brings us to the second speech in verses 3 to 8 and the second new name.

  202. Verse 3, Abram fell on his face and God said to him,

  203. Now the Hebrew word Ab means father.

  204. And the name Abraham means, or Avram, probably a better pronunciation, means exalted father.

  205. But the name Avraham, as Simon explained in the kids talk, means father of many.

  206. Father of many.

  207. In chapter 15, God had promised Abram many descendants.

  208. And it's implied that they would form one nation in the land of Canaan, the land God was giving.

  209. But in this second covenant, or this covenant upgrade, Abraham would be the father of many in an even greater sense.

  210. He would be the father of a multitude of nations, not just one, but many.

  211. Now that's the promise that's at the heart of this covenant.

  212. Verse 6, I will make you exceedingly fruitful.

  213. The word fruitful there echoes Genesis chapter 1, the promise at creation, or the mandate at creation.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  214. And Genesis chapter 9, the command to Noah, the blessing of Noah after the flood.

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  215. I will make you exceedingly fruitful and I will make you into nations, God says.

  216. That's the promise that's at the heart of this covenant in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  217. That's the sense in which God will multiply Abraham greatly.

  218. Making him the father of many, not just descendants, but many nations.

  219. But in what sense would Abraham be the father of a multitude of nations?

  220. That's the question we need to ask.

  221. But hold that question.

  222. First, I want us to see three other elements of this covenant.

  223. Kings, offspring and everlasting.

  224. First kings.

  225. Look at verse 6.

  226. Again, I will make you into nations and kings shall come from you.

  227. The Lord says.

  228. In making this covenant, God emphasizes your descendants will include kings.

  229. For some reason not yet explained, a royal line will be important for this covenant.

  230. Second, your offspring, verse 7.

  231. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you.

  232. Throughout their generations.

  233. The covenant in chapter 15 was made with Abram alone.

  234. This covenant God specifically makes with Abraham and his offspring.

  235. It would fully belong to future generations.

  236. Third, everlasting.

  237. Between me and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

  238. For an everlasting covenant, God says.

  239. This covenant would be perpetual.

  240. It would endure.

  241. It concerned God's ultimate plans.

  242. His plans for an everlasting future.

  243. For days without end.

  244. God's everlasting covenant.

  245. His eternal plan was that Abraham would be the father of a multitude of nations.

  246. So let's return to that question.

  247. In what sense would Abraham be the father of a multitude of nations?

  248. Well, one option is maybe he's the father of many nations by physical descent.

  249. Now, he's their ancestor.

  250. Now, getting ahead of ourselves a little bit here, but I have a family tree for Abraham that I think will come up on the screen.

  251. There we go.

  252. There we go.

  253. Showing Abraham's descendants.

  254. And ultimately, Abraham would have children by three women, by Hagar, Sarah and Keturah.

  255. And from them came multiple nations.

  256. The Arab tribes descended from Ishmael.

  257. Edom and Israel descended from Sarah, through Sarah.

  258. And Midianites and others through Keturah.

  259. Now, maybe you could say that if you take all of those different people, groups and nations together, that adds up to a multitude.

  260. And in that sense, Abraham is the father of a multitude of nations.

  261. Although maybe that feels like it's stretching the language a little.

  262. I think next slide we go.

  263. But actually, Genesis doesn't really let us reach that conclusion anyway.

  264. Because later on in this chapter, in verses 19 to 21, God distinguishes between Isaac and Ishmael, two sons of Abraham, and says the covenant will be through Isaac, not through Ishmael.

  265. So that seems to narrow it down even further.

  266. Maybe the multitude of nations, next slide, is just Edom and Israel.

  267. But then that doesn't really sound like a multitude at all.

  268. That's just two.

  269. Even more definitive, though, is when we get to it, Genesis chapter 35, verse 11, when the Lord repeats this or reaffirms this covenant to Jacob, Abraham's grandson.

    Genesis 35:11

  270. Genesis 35, verse 9, God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan Aram and he blessed him.

    Genesis 35:9

  271. And God said to him, I am God Almighty, El Shaddai.

  272. Be fruitful and multiply.

  273. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you and kings shall come from your own body.

  274. Can you hear all the echoes of Genesis 17 there?

  275. I am El Shaddai.

  276. Be fruitful.

  277. A company of nations.

  278. Kings.

  279. I mean, this is the Genesis 17 covenant being reaffirmed to Jacob.

  280. And about the kings, God is explicit.

  281. He says, kings shall come from your own body.

  282. That is, by physical descent from you.

  283. But what about the first part?

  284. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you.

  285. Well, physically, Jacob was the ancestor of only one nation.

  286. Israel.

  287. Israel.

  288. So God distinguishes.

  289. A nation would come from Jacob, a nation by physical descent.

  290. But a company of nations could only come from Jacob in another sense.

  291. In other words, to bring us back to Genesis 17, the covenant in Genesis 17 is not about Abraham's physical fatherhood of a few nations,

  292. but his spiritual fatherhood of a multitude of nations.

  293. The covenant of Genesis 17 is God's formal, binding, eternal ratification of the promise initially announced in Genesis 12, verse 3,

    Genesis 12:3

  294. in you, all families of the earth shall be blessed.

  295. That's the meaning of the name Abraham.

  296. It signifies God's promise and plan and purpose to gather together all nations, all peoples, all the families of the earth,

  297. that they might receive his blessing.

  298. And what is the blessing?

  299. What is the ultimate goal of this covenant?

  300. Well, it's there before us in that one promise, that one most important promise, which is the purpose of every other promise.

  301. Verse 7,

  302. And I'll establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant,

  303. to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

  304. Or as God puts it simply at the end of verse 8,

  305. And I will be their God.

  306. God has made an everlasting covenant, from which he will not budge,

  307. to bring together a multitude of nations, all the families of the earth,

  308. so that he might bless us by being our God.

  309. Now think about that promise, and I will be their God.

  310. God has made an everlasting covenant, from which he will not budge,

  311. promise that, because that is just a given of reality.

  312. What God promises here, when he says, I will be their God,

  313. is the kind of relationship with God that Adam and Eve enjoyed in the garden.

  314. When they dwelt in his presence,

  315. heard his voice,

  316. delighted in his blessing,

  317. when they walked with the Lord in the cool of the day.

  318. It's the kind of relationship in which God is over us,

  319. and with us,

  320. and for us,

  321. and nothing in all creation can separate us from his love.

  322. God pledged himself to restore,

  323. with a multitude of nations,

  324. all the spiritual offspring of Abraham,

  325. that perfect union of love,

  326. and worship,

  327. and joy,

  328. for which we were made.

  329. God promised to give himself to us,

  330. that we might glorify him,

  331. and enjoy him forever.

  332. And that promise is for people of every nation.

  333. And I will be their God.

  334. Now I want us to think about some implications of that.

  335. We're going to think about one implication now.

  336. We're going to think about some further implications

  337. after we've looked at the rest of chapter 17, briefly.

  338. One implication now.

  339. Martin Luther King used to say,

  340. 11 a.m. Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America.

  341. That is,

  342. he's making the point that in mid-20th century America,

  343. nowhere was the division between black and white

  344. clearer than on a Sunday morning,

  345. when the country divided into black churches,

  346. and white churches,

  347. African-American churches,

  348. and European-American churches.

  349. Now,

  350. at one level,

  351. it doesn't matter if there are ethnic churches.

  352. Think about it.

  353. If in Glendale here,

  354. we had a Chinese church,

  355. and an African church,

  356. and a Korean church,

  357. and a Spanish church,

  358. and an Aboriginal Australian church.

  359. Well, if that happened,

  360. if we had all those churches here in Glendale,

  361. praise God.

  362. There was a 1969 song

  363. by Blue Mink,

  364. which proposed putting all the people of the world

  365. into a melting pot.

  366. And then,

  367. stirring the melting pot

  368. for a hundred years or more,

  369. and then turning out

  370. coffee-coloured people

  371. by the score.

  372. Anyone know that song?

  373. I could sing one or two nods, right?

  374. It's not a very good song.

  375. But,

  376. but,

  377. but while God's plan

  378. is to gather

  379. one church,

  380. that one church

  381. is not uniform,

  382. it's not monochrome.

  383. God wants to be known

  384. and worshipped

  385. in English,

  386. and in Mandarin,

  387. and in Swahili,

  388. and in Spanish,

  389. and in Arabic,

  390. and in Indonesian,

  391. Telugu,

  392. Creole,

  393. and thousands of other languages.

  394. Abraham is not the father

  395. of one coffee-coloured nation,

  396. but of a multitude of nations.

  397. So there's no problem

  398. with specific ethnic

  399. or language-based churches.

  400. Every,

  401. in fact,

  402. every congregation

  403. is a language-based church.

  404. You can't avoid it.

  405. At the same time,

  406. every church,

  407. while it may operate

  408. in a specific language,

  409. should in principle

  410. be a place

  411. where people

  412. of every nation

  413. and ethnicity

  414. and background

  415. are welcome.

  416. Now,

  417. when the multitude

  418. of nations

  419. in the church

  420. is mirrored

  421. in a plurality

  422. of nations

  423. in a church,

  424. well,

  425. that's a beautiful thing.

  426. we have some

  427. of that diversity

  428. here at Grace.

  429. Praise God.

  430. We might pray

  431. for even more.

  432. So let's strive

  433. to be hospitable

  434. to one another,

  435. to build bridges

  436. across culture

  437. and across language,

  438. so that anyone

  439. who walks through

  440. the doors

  441. of our church

  442. will know

  443. they belong,

  444. wherever they come from.

  445. And so God's

  446. covenant with Abraham

  447. might be visibly

  448. displayed

  449. right here

  450. in this place.

  451. Okay,

  452. I have some more

  453. implications later,

  454. but let's just

  455. fly through

  456. the rest of chapter 17

  457. because there are

  458. some more things

  459. we need to notice here

  460. and then we'll

  461. wrap it up together.

  462. The third speech

  463. of God

  464. in verses 9 to 14

  465. begins,

  466. verse 9,

  467. And God said

  468. to Abraham,

  469. As for you,

  470. you shall keep

  471. my covenant,

  472. you and your offspring

  473. after you

  474. throughout their

  475. generations.

  476. Now what God

  477. means by this

  478. when he calls

  479. on Abraham

  480. to keep his covenant

  481. is to keep

  482. what he calls

  483. in verse 11

  484. a sign

  485. of the covenant.

  486. Abraham's descendants

  487. were to be marked

  488. by that sign.

  489. It was a way

  490. of saying

  491. we belong

  492. to the covenant.

  493. We are waiting

  494. on God's promises.

  495. God is our God.

  496. The sign

  497. of the covenant

  498. was circumcision.

  499. Now why circumcision?

  500. Well,

  501. this chapter

  502. doesn't directly

  503. answer that.

  504. In fact,

  505. I don't think

  506. really anywhere

  507. in the Bible

  508. directly answers

  509. that question.

  510. but I think

  511. it's reasonable

  512. to suppose

  513. that there is

  514. some relationship

  515. between the sign

  516. and between

  517. what God

  518. has promised.

  519. Just as you

  520. think about

  521. the covenant

  522. with Noah,

  523. there's an obvious

  524. connection between

  525. the sign,

  526. a rainbow,

  527. and the promise

  528. not to flood

  529. the earth.

  530. Well,

  531. the promise

  532. of the covenant

  533. in Genesis 17

  534. is,

  535. I will multiply

  536. you greatly.

  537. I will make

  538. you exceedingly

  539. fruitful.

  540. I will make

  541. you into nations

  542. and kings

  543. shall come

  544. from you.

  545. So perhaps

  546. the best suggestion

  547. as to why

  548. circumcision

  549. is because

  550. of the association

  551. with procreation.

  552. Circumcision

  553. was to serve

  554. as a visible

  555. sign

  556. that fruitfulness,

  557. multiplication,

  558. descendants

  559. are from

  560. the Lord.

  561. They are the

  562. blessing of

  563. El Shaddai.

  564. And ultimately

  565. it was a

  566. reminder that

  567. it was God

  568. himself who

  569. would fulfil

  570. his promise

  571. to bless

  572. all families

  573. of the earth

  574. through the

  575. seed of Abraham.

  576. God commands

  577. in verse 10

  578. that every male

  579. among you

  580. shall be

  581. circumcised.

  582. And verses

  583. 12 to 13

  584. go on to explain

  585. that this includes

  586. both those

  587. born in your

  588. house and

  589. any bought

  590. with your

  591. money from

  592. any foreigner

  593. who's not

  594. of your

  595. offspring.

  596. That is,

  597. this sign

  598. of the

  599. covenant

  600. wasn't only

  601. for the

  602. natural

  603. descendants

  604. of Abraham,

  605. it was for

  606. any who

  607. became

  608. attached

  609. to Abraham's

  610. family.

  611. Whatever

  612. people or

  613. tribe

  614. they might

  615. be from.

  616. All could

  617. be included.

  618. And so

  619. the covenant

  620. with Abraham

  621. was both

  622. universal

  623. and

  624. particular.

  625. We've

  626. seen the

  627. universal,

  628. Abraham the

  629. father of

  630. a multitude

  631. of nations.

  632. But there's

  633. also a sense

  634. in which this

  635. covenant is

  636. particular.

  637. And the

  638. fourth and

  639. fifth speeches

  640. of God in

  641. this chapter

  642. sort of draw

  643. out the

  644. connection

  645. between the

  646. universal and

  647. the particular.

  648. Speech 4,

  649. verse 15,

  650. And God

  651. said to

  652. Abraham,

  653. As for

  654. Sarai,

  655. your wife,

  656. you shall

  657. not call

  658. her name

  659. Sarai,

  660. but Sarah

  661. shall be

  662. her name.

  663. I will

  664. bless her

  665. and moreover

  666. I will

  667. give a

  668. son by

  669. her.

  670. I will

  671. bless her

  672. and she

  673. shall

  674. become

  675. nations.

  676. Kings

  677. of peoples

  678. shall come

  679. from her.

  680. Now,

  681. when God

  682. says I

  683. will bless

  684. her,

  685. I will

  686. give you

  687. a son

  688. by her,

  689. that's the

  690. particular.

  691. family

  692. line.

  693. Physically,

  694. Sarah would

  695. be the

  696. mother of

  697. a particular

  698. family

  699. line.

  700. When God

  701. says I

  702. will bless

  703. her and

  704. she shall

  705. become

  706. nations,

  707. that's the

  708. universal.

  709. Spiritually,

  710. Sarah would

  711. be the

  712. mother of

  713. a multitude

  714. of nations.

  715. So what's

  716. the relationship

  717. between the

  718. two,

  719. between a

  720. son and

  721. nations,

  722. between a

  723. particular

  724. family line

  725. and all

  726. the families

  727. of the

  728. earth?

  729. Well,

  730. Genesis 17

  731. is giving

  732. us hints,

  733. right?

  734. It's laying

  735. seeds,

  736. it's beginning

  737. threads that

  738. will flow

  739. through the

  740. rest of

  741. the Bible.

  742. Here's

  743. another hint.

  744. Kings

  745. of peoples

  746. shall come

  747. from her.

  748. The

  749. particular

  750. line

  751. through

  752. Sarah's

  753. son

  754. would be

  755. a royal

  756. line,

  757. a line

  758. that would

  759. produce

  760. kings,

  761. which

  762. may well

  763. explain the

  764. third new

  765. name we

  766. encounter in

  767. this chapter,

  768. Sarah.

  769. No longer

  770. Sarah,

  771. but call

  772. her name

  773. Sarah,

  774. because Sarah

  775. means princess.

  776. It's a name

  777. fitting for the

  778. mother of

  779. kings.

  780. Kings of

  781. people shall

  782. come from

  783. her.

  784. So as the

  785. Bible unfolds,

  786. the particular

  787. promise,

  788. Sarah's line,

  789. is the

  790. key to the

  791. universal

  792. promise,

  793. all

  794. nations.

  795. It's

  796. through

  797. the son

  798. of Sarah

  799. that the

  800. nations would

  801. be blessed.

  802. The promise

  803. to Sarah

  804. sets us

  805. waiting for

  806. a king,

  807. a king

  808. to whom

  809. would belong

  810. the obedience

  811. of all

  812. nations.

  813. nations.

  814. Now

  815. Abraham

  816. responds to

  817. all this,

  818. the promise

  819. that Sarah

  820. will have

  821. a son in

  822. verse 17,

  823. by falling

  824. on his

  825. face again

  826. and laughing.

  827. And then

  828. he speaks to

  829. himself and

  830. he speaks to

  831. God.

  832. In verse 17,

  833. Abraham says

  834. to himself,

  835. shall a child

  836. be born to

  837. a man who's

  838. a hundred

  839. years old?

  840. Shall Sarah

  841. who's ninety

  842. years old

  843. bear a

  844. child?

  845. I mean,

  846. it's impossible.

  847. His laughter

  848. is laughter

  849. of disbelief.

  850. I'm too

  851. old.

  852. Sarah's

  853. too old.

  854. This can't

  855. happen.

  856. It's

  857. ludicrous.

  858. And so

  859. Abraham

  860. speaks to

  861. God in

  862. verse 18

  863. and offers

  864. a very

  865. practical

  866. solution.

  867. And Abraham

  868. said to

  869. God,

  870. oh that

  871. Ishmael

  872. might live

  873. before you.

  874. Abraham

  875. already had

  876. a son.

  877. Oh may

  878. that this

  879. son,

  880. the son

  881. born according

  882. to the

  883. flesh,

  884. the son

  885. born through

  886. Sarah's

  887. and Abraham's

  888. scheme back

  889. in chapter

  890. 16,

  891. may this

  892. son be

  893. enough.

  894. Abraham

  895. laughed at

  896. the impossible

  897. but in his

  898. fifth speech

  899. God picks up

  900. on Abraham's

  901. laughter.

  902. Verse 19,

  903. no but

  904. Sarah your

  905. wife shall

  906. bear you a

  907. son and

  908. you shall

  909. call his

  910. name

  911. Isaac.

  912. Which means

  913. he laughs.

  914. You shall

  915. call his

  916. name Isaac.

  917. I will

  918. establish my

  919. covenant with

  920. him as an

  921. everlasting

  922. covenant for

  923. his offspring

  924. after him.

  925. As for

  926. Ishmael,

  927. I've heard

  928. you and

  929. behold I've

  930. blessed him

  931. and will

  932. make him

  933. fruitful and

  934. multiply him

  935. greatly.

  936. He shall

  937. father twelve

  938. princes and

  939. I'll make

  940. him into a

  941. great nation.

  942. but I

  943. will establish

  944. my covenant

  945. with Isaac

  946. whom Sarah

  947. will bear to

  948. you at

  949. this time

  950. next year.

  951. Here's the

  952. fourth of the

  953. new names.

  954. Isaac, he

  955. laughs and

  956. the name

  957. here, the

  958. naming of

  959. Isaac points

  960. to the

  961. improbability

  962. of what God

  963. was going

  964. to do.

  965. How

  966. ludicrous

  967. it was.

  968. But you

  969. see the

  970. blessing of

  971. all nations

  972. couldn't be

  973. achieved by

  974. man but

  975. only by

  976. God, by

  977. El Shaddai.

  978. It couldn't

  979. be achieved

  980. by the

  981. flesh or

  982. our plans

  983. but only by

  984. the promise

  985. of the

  986. Lord.

  987. And as

  988. for Ishmael,

  989. well Ishmael

  990. wouldn't be the

  991. son through

  992. whom all

  993. nations would

  994. be blessed.

  995. Rather Ishmael

  996. would come to

  997. be a nation

  998. who must

  999. come to

  1000. that son

  1001. for blessing.

  1002. Let's draw

  1003. together some

  1004. implications for

  1005. us.

  1006. What does

  1007. this mean

  1008. for us?

  1009. One of the

  1010. places Genesis

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  1011. chapter 17 is

  1012. picked up later

  1013. in the New

  1014. Testament is in

  1015. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1016. chapter 3.

  1017. Here are some

  1018. verses from

  1019. chapter 3,

  1020. verse 26

  1021. to 29.

  1022. In Christ

  1023. Jesus,

  1024. you are all

  1025. sons of

  1026. God through

  1027. faith.

  1028. For as many

  1029. of you as

  1030. were baptized

  1031. into Christ

  1032. have put on

  1033. Christ.

  1034. There is

  1035. neither Jew

  1036. nor Greek,

  1037. there is

  1038. neither slave

  1039. nor free,

  1040. there is no

  1041. male and

  1042. female,

  1043. for you are

  1044. all one

  1045. in Christ

  1046. Jesus.

  1047. And if you

  1048. are Christ's,

  1049. then you

  1050. are Abraham's

  1051. offspring,

  1052. heirs

  1053. according to

  1054. the promise.

  1055. God's

  1056. covenant,

  1057. God's

  1058. plan,

  1059. God's

  1060. promise was

  1061. that whoever

  1062. you are,

  1063. whatever your

  1064. nationality,

  1065. whatever your

  1066. background,

  1067. whether you're

  1068. rich or poor,

  1069. whether you're

  1070. educated or

  1071. illiterate,

  1072. slave or

  1073. free,

  1074. male or

  1075. female,

  1076. whoever you

  1077. are,

  1078. that you

  1079. might know

  1080. him through

  1081. the Lord

  1082. Jesus

  1083. Christ.

  1084. Jesus

  1085. Christ

  1086. is the

  1087. King of

  1088. peoples.

  1089. He is the

  1090. royal son of

  1091. Sarah,

  1092. the son of

  1093. Isaac,

  1094. the son of

  1095. Jacob,

  1096. for whom

  1097. the covenant

  1098. was waiting.

  1099. Circumcision's

  1100. no longer

  1101. required of

  1102. us,

  1103. Paul makes

  1104. that very

  1105. clear in

  1106. Galatians,

  1107. circumcision's

  1108. no longer

  1109. required,

  1110. because we're

  1111. no longer

  1112. waiting for

  1113. the promise.

  1114. The son we

  1115. were waiting

  1116. for has

  1117. come.

  1118. Through

  1119. faith in

  1120. Christ,

  1121. the promise

  1122. that is the

  1123. purpose of

  1124. all promises

  1125. is yours

  1126. and I will

  1127. be their

  1128. God.

  1129. He is our

  1130. God and we

  1131. are his

  1132. people,

  1133. not just

  1134. his people,

  1135. his sons.

  1136. because the

  1137. one Genesis

  1138. 17 is

  1139. waiting for

  1140. has come.

  1141. Four names,

  1142. one promise,

  1143. El Shaddai,

  1144. Abraham,

  1145. Sarah,

  1146. Isaac

  1147. will be their

  1148. God.

  1149. But let me

  1150. make one

  1151. last point

  1152. in closing.

  1153. Because

  1154. brothers and

  1155. sisters,

  1156. heirs of

  1157. Abraham's

  1158. promise,

  1159. the task

  1160. isn't finished

  1161. yet.

  1162. God

  1163. will be

  1164. saved.

  1165. You can

  1166. jump online

  1167. and go to

  1168. a website

  1169. called the

  1170. Joshua

  1171. Project,

  1172. which kind

  1173. of tracks

  1174. the progress

  1175. of the

  1176. gospel

  1177. throughout

  1178. the world,

  1179. the progress

  1180. of the

  1181. promise of

  1182. salvation in

  1183. Jesus Christ.

  1184. Christ.

  1185. And according

  1186. to the

  1187. Joshua

  1188. Project,

  1189. 1.9

  1190. billion

  1191. people,

  1192. that's

  1193. one quarter

  1194. of the

  1195. world's

  1196. population,

  1197. 1.9

  1198. billion

  1199. people live

  1200. in 3,215

  1201. frontier people

  1202. groups.

  1203. Now,

  1204. a frontier

  1205. people group,

  1206. according to

  1207. the Joshua

  1208. Project,

  1209. is a

  1210. people group,

  1211. a tribe,

  1212. a people

  1213. group,

  1214. in which

  1215. there are

  1216. fewer than

  1217. one in a

  1218. thousand

  1219. Christians,

  1220. often far

  1221. fewer.

  1222. These are

  1223. unreached

  1224. people groups

  1225. in our

  1226. world,

  1227. with virtually

  1228. no followers

  1229. of Jesus,

  1230. with no

  1231. known

  1232. movement

  1233. to Jesus,

  1234. but people

  1235. groups still

  1236. in need of

  1237. pioneering

  1238. cross-cultural

  1239. mission.

  1240. 3,215

  1241. people groups,

  1242. 1.9

  1243. billion

  1244. people,

  1245. a quarter

  1246. of the

  1247. world's

  1248. population.

  1249. Among

  1250. them are

  1251. the

  1252. Khunbi

  1253. people.

  1254. This is a

  1255. people group

  1256. in central

  1257. and western

  1258. India,

  1259. a people

  1260. of 22

  1261. million

  1262. people.

  1263. They speak

  1264. Gujarati,

  1265. Kannada and

  1266. Telugu,

  1267. they're the

  1268. main languages

  1269. of this

  1270. group.

  1271. Their

  1272. religion,

  1273. they're Hindu

  1274. by religion,

  1275. 99.3%

  1276. Hindu.

  1277. The Bible

  1278. is available

  1279. in their

  1280. language and

  1281. yet people

  1282. in this,

  1283. Khunbi

  1284. people,

  1285. regard

  1286. Christianity

  1287. with fear

  1288. as an

  1289. intrusive

  1290. religious

  1291. system which

  1292. will disturb

  1293. their culture

  1294. and their

  1295. families.

  1296. people.

  1297. There are

  1298. very few

  1299. believers,

  1300. perhaps one

  1301. in 2,000.

  1302. But God's

  1303. plan is to

  1304. bless the

  1305. Khunbi

  1306. people through

  1307. faith in

  1308. Jesus,

  1309. that he may

  1310. be their

  1311. God.

  1312. and that's

  1313. just one of

  1314. thousands of

  1315. unreached

  1316. people groups

  1317. in our

  1318. world.

  1319. So brothers,

  1320. sisters,

  1321. let's keep

  1322. praying for

  1323. the unfinished

  1324. task.

  1325. Let's

  1326. support those

  1327. who are

  1328. engaged in

  1329. reaching the

  1330. nations with

  1331. the message

  1332. of Christ

  1333. and even

  1334. let's pray

  1335. that God

  1336. may send

  1337. out people

  1338. from our

  1339. midst

  1340. to the

  1341. furthest

  1342. reaches of

  1343. the world.

  1344. Will you

  1345. pray with

  1346. me?

  1347. Heavenly

  1348. Father,

  1349. we thank

  1350. you for

  1351. your

  1352. everlasting

  1353. promise

  1354. and covenant,

  1355. your

  1356. commitment

  1357. to us

  1358. that you

  1359. will be

  1360. our God

  1361. through your

  1362. Son,

  1363. the Lord

  1364. Jesus

  1365. Christ.

  1366. Father,

  1367. we pray

  1368. that at

  1369. church here

  1370. we might

  1371. be welcoming

  1372. to people

  1373. of all

  1374. nations

  1375. and all

  1376. backgrounds

  1377. and all

  1378. cultures.

  1379. Please,

  1380. may we

  1381. be a

  1382. visible

  1383. demonstration

  1384. of your

  1385. covenant

  1386. with

  1387. Abraham.

  1388. And

  1389. Father,

  1390. we pray

  1391. for the

  1392. progress

  1393. of the

  1394. gospel

  1395. of Jesus

  1396. Christ

  1397. throughout

  1398. the world.

  1399. There are

  1400. still so

  1401. many people,

  1402. billions of

  1403. people,

  1404. Lord,

  1405. who will

  1406. live and

  1407. die

  1408. without any

  1409. real opportunity

  1410. to know

  1411. their

  1412. saviour

  1413. unless

  1414. someone

  1415. goes to

  1416. them.

  1417. So,

  1418. please,

  1419. Father,

  1420. continue

  1421. and speed

  1422. the work

  1423. of

  1424. worldwide

  1425. mission.

  1426. Help us

  1427. to be

  1428. prayerful

  1429. and to

  1430. support

  1431. those who

  1432. go to

  1433. do that

  1434. work.

  1435. Please

  1436. raise up

  1437. more from

  1438. here and

  1439. throughout

  1440. the world

  1441. to send

  1442. to those

  1443. unreached

  1444. frontier people

  1445. groups.

  1446. we pray

  1447. for the

  1448. Kumbi

  1449. people and

  1450. thousands of

  1451. people groups

  1452. like them.

  1453. We ask

  1454. that in

  1455. this

  1456. generation

  1457. you would

  1458. bring

  1459. Christ,

  1460. his name,

  1461. his gospel,

  1462. the saving

  1463. word,

  1464. to them in

  1465. such a way

  1466. that their

  1467. hearts are

  1468. gripped,

  1469. that they

  1470. are convicted

  1471. and that

  1472. they call

  1473. on the

  1474. name of

  1475. their

  1476. saviour.

  1477. And we

  1478. ask all

  1479. this for

  1480. Jesus'

  1481. sake.

  1482. Amen.
