  1. Good morning, everyone. So the reading is from 2 Peter, chapter 2, verses 1 to 10.

    2 Peter 2:1–10

  2. But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you,

  3. who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the master who bought them, bringing

  4. upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them,

  5. the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed, they will exploit you with false words.

  6. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and the destruction is not asleep.

  7. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to

  8. chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment, if he did not spare the ancient world,

  9. but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others when he brought a flood upon

  10. the world of the ungodly, if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them

  11. to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly, and if he rescued

  12. the righteous lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked, for as that righteous man

  13. lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he

  14. saw and heard. Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous

  15. under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of

  16. defiling passion and despise authority.

  17. Father, we thank you for all of your word.

  18. We love going through a book section by section, and it means we don't skip over the difficult bits.

  19. So I pray, as we come today, that we humbly sit under your word, trusting that we need to hear

  20. Genesis 19, that it's not just people out there in the world, but we, we, your people, need to hear this.

  21. So please bless us in ways, more ways than we can even expect, by sitting under your word now.

  22. Give us minds that understand and hearts that believe. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  23. Amen. Well, many put off Christianity because of the fire and brimstone judgment that we're about to see in Genesis 19.

  24. Many would prefer the vision of a loving society of acceptance, you do you, live and let live.

  25. This whole fire judgment stuff, it seems distasteful.

  26. But is it really a loving society if there is no justice?

  27. I want to read a quote from a prominent atheist, Richard Dawkins.

  28. He once wrote this,

  29. The universe, still the quoting,

  30. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is at bottom no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.

  31. And yet, isn't there something in all of us that when we see or hear an atrocity, we want to call it what it is.

  32. After the Bondi attack last year, our state premier and our prime minister reached for a word to describe that.

  33. They said it was evil.

  34. It wasn't enough to say it was a crime.

  35. They reached for that word.

  36. It's evil.

  37. There's something in us, isn't there?

  38. I don't care whether you believe in God or not.

  39. There's something in us that wants to call it what it is.

  40. That's wrong.

  41. And if this universe is just blind physical forces, if there's no absolute right and wrong that sits over every culture and every single person, on what basis can you fight for justice?

  42. If someone is being trampled by the powerful, what are you going to appeal to to say you shouldn't be doing that?

  43. And if there's only blind, pitiless indifference, you can't give anyone hope who's grieving and oppressed.

  44. There will be justice in the end.

  45. We need justice.

  46. We need it if we're going to have a truly loving world.

  47. Now, God's promise to Abraham, we see in Genesis, is of a love-filled world.

  48. He wants to restore the whole world.

  49. He says, through Abraham, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, fully blessed from Abraham's family line.

  50. So that's the hope we have.

  51. As we continue the story, can I encourage you to have your Bibles open to Genesis 19.

  52. I'm going to walk us through the story and then I want to finish with three lessons for us today.

  53. So in Genesis 18, we heard that the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great.

  54. And the Lord is visiting.

  55. He's coming down to see the evidence firsthand.

  56. And Abraham, in his unique relationship, covenant relationship, he's interceding.

  57. He's praying.

  58. Shall not the judge of all the earth do what is right, do what is just?

  59. Far be it from you to sweep the righteous away with the wicked, with the guilty.

  60. And he goes further still and he asks, instead of the sin of the many coming onto the few righteous, could it work the other way around?

  61. Lord, can the few righteous, can you spare the wicked on their account?

  62. Are you the kind of God who will spare the many sinners for the sake of the few righteous?

  63. 50, 40, 30, 20, 10.

  64. And the repeated answer is, yes, I'm that kind of God.

  65. I will spare Sodom, even if I find 10.

  66. Just 10.

  67. So, as we come into the story, we should be asking, is the judge of all the earth right?

  68. Is he just in his judgment?

  69. So, verses 1 to 3.

  70. The two angels came to Sodom in the evening and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

  71. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said,

  72. My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet.

  73. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.

  74. They said, No, we will spend the night in the town square.

  75. But he pressed them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house.

  76. And he made them a feast and baked unlevered bread, and they ate.

  77. Now, the way Lot receives the heavenly visitors, it should remind you, I think, remind us of what we saw last week.

  78. He receives them as a humble servant, like we saw with Abraham.

  79. He's bowing to the earth, giving them a meal.

  80. But there's something else in the mix here, isn't there?

  81. With Abraham, it's just peace and fellowship.

  82. Something else is going on here.

  83. The visitors want to spend the night in the town square behind the safety of the city gates.

  84. But then Lot presses them strongly.

  85. Now, that word we're going to see later in verse 9, the whole town is going to be pressing against Lot.

  86. Something is going on.

  87. Lot knows they are in danger.

  88. What we're about to read is not a one-off event.

  89. He knows the character of this town.

  90. He's trying to protect them.

  91. So, as we continue, verse 4.

  92. Lot went out to the men of the entrance, shut the door after him, and said,

  93. Lot, where are the men who came to you tonight?

  94. Bring them out to us, that we may know them.

  95. Lot went out to the men of the entrance, shut the door after him, and said, I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.

  96. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man.

  97. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please.

  98. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.

  99. But they said, stand back.

  100. And they said, this fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge.

  101. Now we will deal worse with you than with them.

  102. Then they pressed hard against the man, Lot, and drew near to break the door down.

  103. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door.

  104. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great,

  105. so that they wore themselves out, groping for the door.

  106. It's a scary scene.

  107. We once had two drunks bang on our front door late at night.

  108. They thought it was their house.

  109. And they were trying to convince me it was their house.

  110. Now let me tell you, I was not opening that front door.

  111. It was scary.

  112. I had my phone, I was just about to call the police because they weren't listening.

  113. This is a scary scene.

  114. There is no police.

  115. The whole town is there.

  116. This is a scary scene.

  117. It is in bold and underlined italics.

  118. The men of the entire city, young and old.

  119. All the people, the last man, surrounding the house.

  120. And what do they want?

  121. They want to know them.

  122. Now to know, usually, in the Old Testament, means how we use the word.

  123. Get acquainted with someone.

  124. Understand who they are.

  125. So there's some Christians who want to paint a positive picture of homosexuality.

  126. And they say, it's not sexual here.

  127. What's really going on is that the town is offended that Lot, a foreigner, has taken in these visitors and they haven't, he hasn't run it by the town to vet them.

  128. Should they stay or not?

  129. And they're offended.

  130. And then they get violent.

  131. Now context.

  132. Context always helps us understand the meaning of a word.

  133. Verse 8.

  134. We got the word no again.

  135. Lot's solution to this is disturbing, is it not?

  136. He offers his daughters clearly in a sexual sense.

  137. They have known no man.

  138. He's offering his daughters sexually.

  139. And that explanation, does that really deserve fire coming down in judgment as we're about to hear?

  140. Appeal is made to Ezekiel 1649 because Ezekiel says this,

  141. Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom, pride, excess of food and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.

  142. But we should expect a sick society to be sick in different ways.

  143. And when you combine Ezekiel with what we're reading in Genesis, it's disturbingly close to our Western culture.

  144. Prosperous ease.

  145. And I know there's costs of living crisis, but compared to the rest of the world,

  146. prosperous ease.

  147. Not helping the poor.

  148. Flaunting sexual so-called freedom.

  149. It's a sick society in many ways.

  150. Sort of.

  151. The word no here, what's going on, we all know what's happening here.

  152. It's an attempt at gang rape.

  153. Now, I'm sorry if that's triggering to anyone.

  154. I just want to call it what it is.

  155. Sometimes you need to call evil for what it is.

  156. Now, they're given an opportunity to repent.

  157. Lot goes out.

  158. I beg you, my brothers.

  159. He's identifying.

  160. My brothers do not act so wickedly.

  161. Who are you to judge?

  162. They overrule any feelings of shame.

  163. Who are you to judge?

  164. But by rejecting Lot, they're really despising God's authority.

  165. They're trying to ease their own conscience.

  166. They're rejecting that there is a judge of all the earth who has the right to tell all of us what is right and wrong,

  167. and who has the power to enforce it.

  168. There is a judge who hears the cries.

  169. They're given an opportunity to repent.

  170. Who are you to judge?

  171. They're even given a partial judgment.

  172. They're blinded.

  173. Now, it's probably a blinding light.

  174. Now, what do they do?

  175. Do they try and make their way home?

  176. No, they wear themselves out, groping for the door.

  177. They're so intent on gratifying their desire.

  178. Look, we all intuitively know you don't need the Ten Commandments.

  179. God's law is written on all of our hearts.

  180. This isn't just a crime.

  181. This is evil.

  182. This is wrong.

  183. The judge is just.

  184. He sees the evidence before acting.

  185. He gives opportunity to repent, even partial judgment before final.

  186. But he will avenge all the cries that Sodom has caused.

  187. Well, verse 12.

  188. Then the men said to Lot, the angels that is,

  189. Have you anyone else here?

  190. Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city?

  191. Bring them out of the place.

  192. For we are about to destroy this place.

  193. Because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord.

  194. And the Lord has sent us to destroy it.

  195. So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters,

  196. Up, get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.

  197. But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jest.

  198. Now, I think there's every reason to imagine that these men were in the crowd.

  199. We're told all the men were gathered at the door.

  200. They don't deserve this warning.

  201. But see the Lord's desire to save anyone associated with Lot.

  202. Go warn them.

  203. And you'd expect their future father-in-law would have some respect in their eyes.

  204. But life was still normal, as Bo introduced the morning.

  205. It's a normal night.

  206. It's a normal day.

  207. The idea of God's coming judgment, it's ridiculous to them.

  208. It's not something to fear.

  209. They make a joke of it.

  210. Verse 15,

  211. As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying,

  212. Up, take your wife and your two daughters, who are here,

  213. lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.

  214. But he lingered.

  215. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand,

  216. the Lord being merciful to him.

  217. And they brought him out and set him outside the city.

  218. And as they brought them out, one said,

  219. Escape for your life.

  220. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley.

  221. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.

  222. And Lot said to them,

  223. Oh no, my lords.

  224. Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight,

  225. and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life.

  226. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die.

  227. Behold, this city is near enough to flee to,

  228. and it is a little one.

  229. Let me escape there.

  230. Is it not a little one?

  231. And my life will be saved.

  232. He said to him,

  233. Behold, I grant you this favor also,

  234. that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

  235. Escape there quickly,

  236. for I can do nothing till you arrive there.

  237. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

  238. Five times here we've got the word escape, flee.

  239. But Lot lingers.

  240. Now, is he overwhelmed?

  241. Like his whole world is coming crashing down.

  242. Like did he just freeze?

  243. I'm not sure.

  244. Because of his requests that he makes,

  245. I think it's more likely he's in two minds.

  246. There's a part of him that doesn't want to leave.

  247. He chose to live in Sodom.

  248. He still loves Sodom to some extent.

  249. The angels had to grab them by the hand

  250. and basically drag them out.

  251. And they give a clear command,

  252. Escape for your life.

  253. This is a life and death moment.

  254. I was once skiing in Thredbo

  255. and it had been raining for days

  256. and I stopped by this path

  257. where water was coming over

  258. so I couldn't keep going.

  259. And the sound of rushing waters,

  260. it was terrifying.

  261. It was a hillside

  262. and water and snow just got mixed up.

  263. I don't know,

  264. I think avalanche is the right word.

  265. And it went within metres of me.

  266. Like I have no idea.

  267. Time slowed down.

  268. I think maybe five seconds.

  269. It was life and death.

  270. I had a quick decision to make.

  271. Now what do we see Lot asking for here?

  272. It is a life and death moment.

  273. Can I have this little city?

  274. What's he doing?

  275. He's trying to bargain.

  276. He's told that the entire valley will be destroyed.

  277. The entire valley is part of this sin of Sodom.

  278. And he's asking,

  279. just give me a little city.

  280. I think he's still in love with Sodom.

  281. He's still clinging to the life he knows.

  282. And they are incredibly patient,

  283. full of mercy,

  284. and they even grant him that request.

  285. Verse 23.

  286. The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zohar.

  287. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah

  288. sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.

  289. And he overthrew those cities and all the valley

  290. and all the inhabitants of the cities

  291. and what grew on the ground.

  292. But Lot's wife behind him looked back

  293. and she became a pillar of salt.

  294. Lot, in the end, he does believe.

  295. He does flee.

  296. But the moment he steps into Zohar,

  297. the Lord does nothing until he reaches safety.

  298. Whatever the fire is,

  299. whether it's natural,

  300. if there's natural causes or supernatural,

  301. you can go research it if you want to look into that.

  302. But it doesn't really matter.

  303. The point here is the Lord himself is the source.

  304. That's very clear.

  305. Yahweh rained on Sodom and Gomorrah

  306. sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.

  307. The Lord's judgment is sudden.

  308. It is severe.

  309. He is the source of it.

  310. He is the judge.

  311. But not a second before he rescues his people.

  312. He gets them out first.

  313. But why does Lot's wife not escape?

  314. Emma and I got to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum,

  315. the volcanic eruption of 79 AD.

  316. And there's bodies that were covered in ash

  317. and they could make cast moulds out of them

  318. because they were preserved.

  319. And it's really disturbing looking at those cast moulds

  320. because it's just so human.

  321. You've got someone covering a child.

  322. You've got someone covering their face.

  323. It was...

  324. I just thought it would be, I don't know,

  325. lava or debris hitting them,

  326. but it's the pyroclastic flow.

  327. It's this above 300 degrees Celsius

  328. travelling at over 100 kilometres an hour

  329. just gone.

  330. Now I have no idea what happened to Lot's wife

  331. but she became a pillar.

  332. Her corpse stands in Scripture as a warning

  333. of a willful decision to turn back.

  334. I don't think we should be imagining

  335. that she was running

  336. and she heard noise and she glanced.

  337. This was a direct defiance of what the angel said.

  338. Lot and her daughters ahead running

  339. and she stopped and turned, looked back.

  340. Now for whatever reason,

  341. she's leaving behind her hometown,

  342. she's leaving behind their home

  343. and their prosperity.

  344. She turned back.

  345. What's shocking about this rescue

  346. is how reluctant the whole family is

  347. to leave.

  348. To leave.

  349. The sons-in-law laugh it off.

  350. Lot's wife changes her mind.

  351. Lot himself lingers.

  352. He hesitates and he's bargaining

  353. to keep some of it.

  354. They're all reluctant to leave.

  355. Well, given how compromised Lot is,

  356. he's a mixed character.

  357. Why was he saved?

  358. Why did he survive?

  359. Verse 27 to 29.

  360. And Abraham went early in the morning

  361. to the place where he had stood before the Lord

  362. and he looked down towards Sodom and Gomorrah

  363. and toward all the land of the valley.

  364. And he looked and behold,

  365. the smoke of the land went up

  366. like the smoke of a furnace.

  367. So it was that when God destroyed

  368. the cities of the valley,

  369. God remembered Abraham

  370. and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow

  371. when he overthrew the cities

  372. in which Lot had lived.

  373. On purpose, we're reminded of the scene

  374. we saw last week of Abraham standing,

  375. interceding for sinners.

  376. Lot is saved in spite of Lot.

  377. He is a mixed character.

  378. In chapter 12, he leaves with Abraham

  379. out of their hometown.

  380. He follows God's call on Abraham out.

  381. And yet chapter 13, he picks Sodom.

  382. They've got a reputation.

  383. He sees the prosperity there

  384. and he pitches his tent there.

  385. To Peter, in our earlier reading,

  386. says his righteous soul was tormented.

  387. He still had a morality about him.

  388. Everything he heard and saw around him

  389. troubled him.

  390. He was still shocked.

  391. But he never left Sodom.

  392. Now, I might be reading into the text here.

  393. Why did he stay there

  394. if he was tormented?

  395. He's a mixed picture.

  396. We're told why he is saved

  397. and if you go to the fundamental reason why,

  398. it's nothing to do with Lot.

  399. God remembered his covenant with Abraham

  400. and so he was merciful.

  401. I think Abraham here is a type of Christ.

  402. Brothers and sisters,

  403. our deliverance on that final day of judgment,

  404. I'm a mixed picture.

  405. I think we're all a mixed picture.

  406. The fundamental reason anyone is shown mercy

  407. on that final day is simply,

  408. it's outside of ourselves.

  409. It's because we belong to the Lord Jesus Christ

  410. by faith.

  411. God will remember Jesus

  412. and so we're shown mercy.

  413. Now, I'd love to finish the story there

  414. but unfortunately,

  415. we've got a revolting epilogue.

  416. Here's the last thing

  417. we learn about Lot's story.

  418. Verse 30.

  419. Now, Lot went up out of Zohar

  420. and lived in the hills

  421. with his two daughters

  422. for he was afraid to live in Zohar.

  423. So he lived in a cave

  424. with his two daughters.

  425. And the firstborn said to the younger,

  426. our father is old

  427. and there is not a man on earth

  428. to come into us

  429. after the menna of all the earth.

  430. Come, let us make our father drink wine

  431. and we will lie with him

  432. that we may preserve offspring

  433. from our father.

  434. So they made their father

  435. drink wine that night

  436. and the firstborn went in

  437. and lay with her father.

  438. He did not know

  439. when she lay down

  440. or when she rose.

  441. The next day,

  442. the firstborn said to the younger,

  443. behold,

  444. I lay last night with my father.

  445. Let us make him drink wine

  446. tonight also.

  447. Then you go in

  448. and lie with him

  449. that we may preserve offspring

  450. from our father.

  451. So they made their father

  452. drink wine that night also.

  453. And the younger arose

  454. and lay with him

  455. and he did not know

  456. when she lay down

  457. or when she arose.

  458. Thus both the daughters of Lot

  459. became pregnant by their father.

  460. The firstborn bore a son,

  461. called his name Moab.

  462. He is the father

  463. of the Moabites to this day.

  464. The younger also bore a son

  465. and called his name Ben-Ami.

  466. He is the father

  467. of the Ammonites to this day.

  468. I have no idea

  469. why Lot doesn't return to Abraham.

  470. Whatever the case,

  471. the daughters wanting to preserve

  472. the family

  473. come up with an awful solution

  474. rather than waiting

  475. for the Lord to provide.

  476. They take matters

  477. into their own hands.

  478. Now, I think this story

  479. would have been a warning

  480. to Israel.

  481. Moabites and Ammonites

  482. were their nearest neighbours.

  483. Moabites worshipped

  484. the fertility gods

  485. where worship was,

  486. it was sexual.

  487. Ammonites worshipped

  488. Molech

  489. that demanded

  490. child sacrifice.

  491. Here we see

  492. Lot's influence

  493. on the next generation.

  494. The daughters

  495. don't seek

  496. Lot's consent

  497. just as he didn't

  498. seek their consent

  499. when he offered them.

  500. Him getting so drunk

  501. that he doesn't

  502. agree to this,

  503. I don't think

  504. it exonerates him.

  505. What is he doing

  506. getting so plastered?

  507. Twice.

  508. I think he's

  509. like Noah.

  510. After the destruction,

  511. it's what we saw

  512. with Noah too.

  513. I think overall

  514. what we're meant

  515. to be seeing here

  516. is as one commentator

  517. puts it,

  518. the rebirth

  519. of Sodom

  520. in the cave.

  521. Sin continued

  522. after Noah's flood.

  523. Sin continues

  524. after Sodom

  525. and Gomorrah

  526. are destroyed.

  527. it lives on

  528. in the world.

  529. Well, there's a story.

  530. I want to draw out

  531. three lessons

  532. for us today.

  533. Sorry,

  534. I saw Ches

  535. just breathe out.

  536. You're probably

  537. all feeling that.

  538. The first lesson

  539. for us

  540. is God's justice

  541. is coming.

  542. Sodom and Gomorrah

  543. stands as a warning

  544. through history

  545. of God's

  546. certain judgment

  547. on immorality.

  548. when Abraham

  549. stood and watched

  550. that smoke

  551. just go up

  552. like a bushfire,

  553. he knew

  554. he was called

  555. to command

  556. his children

  557. after him

  558. to follow

  559. the way

  560. of the Lord

  561. to be different

  562. from the rest

  563. of the world.

  564. Be in the world

  565. but not of the world.

  566. How did they do?

  567. If there's a competition

  568. for the most

  569. disturbing passage

  570. in the Bible,

  571. this is

  572. pretty up there

  573. for one of the

  574. most disturbing

  575. chapters.

  576. I think one of them,

  577. another one,

  578. just creeps in front

  579. and it's Judges 19.

  580. It's Abraham's

  581. descendants,

  582. they've been

  583. freed from Egypt,

  584. they've got the

  585. law of Moses,

  586. they're in the land

  587. and a traveller

  588. comes to the

  589. town square,

  590. a man invites him

  591. in,

  592. gives him a meal,

  593. gives him rest.

  594. The men of the city

  595. surround the house

  596. demanding to know him.

  597. The host goes out,

  598. almost identical

  599. words to the lot,

  600. saying don't do

  601. this wickedness.

  602. He offers his

  603. daughter and a

  604. concubine,

  605. he forces the

  606. concubine outside

  607. and I really

  608. don't want to

  609. finish the story.

  610. I'll let you

  611. go and read it,

  612. it is

  613. disgusting.

  614. Here's one of

  615. the opening

  616. verses of the

  617. prophet Isaiah,

  618. hear the word

  619. of the Lord

  620. you rulers of

  621. Sodom,

  622. give ear to

  623. the teaching

  624. of our God

  625. you people

  626. of Gomorrah.

  627. Sodom stood

  628. as a warning

  629. to Abraham's

  630. descendants

  631. and it still

  632. stands as a

  633. warning to us

  634. today as we

  635. heard in 2

  636. Peter 2,

  637. universal

  638. judgment is

  639. coming and

  640. it will be

  641. just.

  642. we've got even

  643. more certainty

  644. that it's

  645. coming.

  646. We don't

  647. just have the

  648. smoke of

  649. Sodom.

  650. When the

  651. eternal Son of

  652. God came and

  653. visited us,

  654. look what

  655. mankind did

  656. in receiving

  657. him.

  658. When we see

  659. him hanging on

  660. the cross,

  661. if that's what

  662. it took to

  663. drink the cup

  664. of God's

  665. wrath,

  666. we can

  667. know for

  668. sure God

  669. cares about

  670. justice.

  671. We can

  672. know for

  673. certain God's

  674. judgment is

  675. coming.

  676. So that's the

  677. first lesson for

  678. us, it is

  679. coming.

  680. The second

  681. lesson for us

  682. is Lot's

  683. wife.

  684. Jesus uses

  685. Lot's wife

  686. wife.

  687. As a

  688. warning in

  689. Luke 17,

  690. as we wait

  691. for him to

  692. visit a

  693. second time,

  694. remember

  695. Lot's wife.

  696. Whoever

  697. seeks to

  698. preserve his

  699. life will

  700. lose it,

  701. but whoever

  702. loses his

  703. life will

  704. keep it.

  705. It doesn't

  706. take long in

  707. your Christian

  708. walk before

  709. you know

  710. someone who

  711. you would

  712. say, I

  713. never would

  714. have thought

  715. that Christian

  716. would have

  717. looked back.

  718. Whether it's

  719. the allure of

  720. wealth, or

  721. some lover, or

  722. they just want

  723. to give full

  724. vent their

  725. passions and

  726. desires, they

  727. don't want to

  728. struggle against

  729. sin anymore.

  730. We all know

  731. Christians who

  732. have made a

  733. willful decision,

  734. I just, I

  735. don't believe

  736. judgment is

  737. coming anymore,

  738. I can't believe

  739. this fire and

  740. brimstone stuff.

  741. Lot's wife, she

  742. willfully changes

  743. her mind because

  744. she loves the

  745. world.

  746. now there's a

  747. difference between

  748. Lot and

  749. Lot's wife,

  750. he's a

  751. contradiction

  752. like me,

  753. horrified at

  754. wickedness and

  755. yet reluctant

  756. to let go of

  757. it.

  758. There's

  759. something I

  760. still love

  761. about this

  762. world, I'm

  763. reluctant to

  764. let go of

  765. it.

  766. but he

  767. does believe,

  768. he does

  769. run.

  770. But Lot's

  771. wife, she

  772. willfully decides

  773. to turn back.

  774. now this is

  775. going to, I

  776. think it's

  777. going to speak

  778. to us

  779. differently so

  780. I just want

  781. to ask a

  782. question because

  783. I think it'll

  784. hit us all

  785. differently.

  786. What

  787. compromise are

  788. you letting

  789. creep into

  790. your faith,

  791. to your

  792. morality,

  793. to your

  794. effectiveness as

  795. salt and

  796. light,

  797. because you're

  798. reluctant to

  799. leave.

  800. You're

  801. reluctant to

  802. leave what

  803. this world

  804. offers you.

  805. Remember

  806. Lot's

  807. wife.

  808. So one

  809. final lesson,

  810. we see here

  811. why someone

  812. is saved.

  813. there's one

  814. little phrase

  815. in verse 16,

  816. it is the

  817. heart of

  818. this story,

  819. it's just

  820. a dark,

  821. it's like

  822. a jeweller

  823. putting a

  824. diamond on

  825. a black

  826. cloth,

  827. this whole

  828. chapter is

  829. just black

  830. and there's

  831. this little

  832. diamond and

  833. you could

  834. easily miss

  835. it.

  836. Verse 16,

  837. the Lord

  838. being merciful

  839. to him

  840. and he

  841. drags him

  842. out.

  843. Lot had

  844. to be

  845. dragged

  846. out by

  847. the

  848. Lord.

  849. Lot

  850. isn't

  851. ultimately

  852. saved

  853. because he

  854. was

  855. hospitable

  856. to the

  857. guests

  858. or he

  859. tried to

  860. tell his

  861. sons-in-law

  862. to flee

  863. and be

  864. saved.

  865. He's

  866. saved

  867. because he

  868. belonged

  869. to Abraham.

  870. We are

  871. saved

  872. simply

  873. because we

  874. belong

  875. to Jesus.

  876. we've got

  877. no room

  878. for boasting.

  879. If you

  880. believe today

  881. it's because

  882. God has

  883. grabbed you

  884. and dragged

  885. you out.

  886. We would

  887. have all

  888. laughed at

  889. such a

  890. message on

  891. our own.

  892. We would

  893. have all

  894. lingered

  895. in love

  896. with this

  897. world.

  898. We are

  899. saved by

  900. God's

  901. mercy

  902. alone

  903. that

  904. he's

  905. grabbed

  906. hold

  907. of us.

  908. I just

  909. want to

  910. finish by

  911. reading a

  912. bit of

  913. Ephesians

  914. 2

  915. because it

  916. has really

  917. warmed my

  918. heart afresh

  919. this week

  920. so I

  921. want to

  922. share it.

  923. Let me

  924. open to

  925. it.

  926. And you

  927. were dead

  928. in the

  929. trespasses

  930. and sins

  931. in which

  932. you once

  933. walked

  934. following

  935. the course

  936. of this

  937. world

  938. following

  939. the prince

  940. of the

  941. power of

  942. the air

  943. the spirit

  944. that is

  945. now at

  946. work

  947. in the

  948. sons of

  949. disobedience

  950. among

  951. whom we

  952. all

  953. once

  954. lived

  955. in the

  956. passions

  957. of our

  958. flesh

  959. carrying

  960. out the

  961. desires

  962. of the

  963. body

  964. and the

  965. mind

  966. and

  967. were by

  968. nature

  969. children

  970. of

  971. wrath

  972. like the

  973. rest of

  974. mankind

  975. but

  976. God

  977. being

  978. rich

  979. in

  980. mercy

  981. because

  982. of the

  983. great

  984. love

  985. with which

  986. he

  987. loved

  988. us

  989. even

  990. when

  991. we

  992. were

  993. dead

  994. in

  995. our

  996. trespasses

  997. made

  998. us

  999. alive

  1000. together

  1001. with

  1002. Christ

  1003. by

  1004. grace

  1005. you

  1006. have

  1007. been

  1008. saved

  1009. and

  1010. raised

  1011. us

  1012. up

  1013. with

  1014. him

  1015. and

  1016. seated

  1017. us

  1018. with

  1019. him

  1020. in

  1021. the

  1022. heavenly

  1023. places

  1024. in

  1025. Christ

  1026. Jesus

  1027. so that

  1028. in the

  1029. coming

  1030. ages

  1031. he

  1032. might

  1033. show

  1034. the

  1035. immeasurable

  1036. riches

  1037. of

  1038. his

  1039. grace

  1040. in

  1041. kindness

  1042. toward

  1043. us

  1044. in

  1045. Christ

  1046. Jesus

  1047. for

  1048. by

  1049. grace

  1050. you

  1051. have

  1052. been

  1053. saved

  1054. through

  1055. faith

  1056. and

  1057. this

  1058. is

  1059. not

  1060. your

  1061. own

  1062. doing

  1063. it

  1064. is

  1065. the

  1066. gift

  1067. of

  1068. God

  1069. not

  1070. a

  1071. result

  1072. of

  1073. works

  1074. so

  1075. that

  1076. no

  1077. one

  1078. may

  1079. boast

  1080. for

  1081. we

  1082. are

  1083. his

  1084. workmanship

  1085. created

  1086. in

  1087. Christ

  1088. Jesus

  1089. for

  1090. good

  1091. works

  1092. which

  1093. God

  1094. prepared

  1095. beforehand

  1096. that

  1097. we

  1098. should

  1099. walk

  1100. in

  1101. them

  1102. well

  1103. praise

  1104. be to

  1105. his

  1106. mercy

  1107. let's

  1108. let's

  1109. pray

  1110. father

  1111. i just

  1112. want to

  1113. praise

  1114. you

  1115. for

  1116. your

  1117. mercy

  1118. that

  1119. you

  1120. would

  1121. send

  1122. your

  1123. son

  1124. to

  1125. sinners

  1126. who

  1127. don't

  1128. deserve

  1129. what

  1130. you've

  1131. given

  1132. us

  1133. we

  1134. thank

  1135. you

  1136. that

  1137. you've

  1138. grabbed

  1139. us

  1140. while

  1141. we

  1142. were

  1143. dead

  1144. in

  1145. sin

  1146. and

  1147. blind

  1148. to

  1149. the

  1150. truth

  1151. and

  1152. you

  1153. grabbed

  1154. us

  1155. and

  1156. made

  1157. us

  1158. alive

  1159. with

  1160. Christ

  1161. father

  1162. i pray

  1163. that

  1164. you

  1165. would

  1166. help

  1167. us

  1168. to

  1169. be

  1170. salt

  1171. and

  1172. light

  1173. in

  1174. this

  1175. world

  1176. walking

  1177. in

  1178. the

  1179. good

  1180. works

  1181. by

  1182. your

  1183. spirit

  1184. now

  1185. help

  1186. us

  1187. to

  1188. be

  1189. praising

  1190. your

  1191. mercy

  1192. not

  1193. arrogant

  1194. as if

  1195. we

  1196. are

  1197. better

  1198. than

  1199. the

  1200. world

  1201. but

  1202. just

  1203. praising

  1204. you

  1205. that

  1206. you

  1207. grabbed

  1208. us

  1209. and

  1210. saved

  1211. us

  1212. pray

  1213. this

  1214. in

  1215. Jesus

  1216. name

  1217. amen

  1218. that
