  1. He visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  2. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him.

  3. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

  4. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

  5. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

  6. And Sarah said, God has made laughter for me.

  7. Everyone who hears will laugh over me.

  8. And she said, who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?

  9. Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.

  10. And the child grew and was weaned.

  11. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

  12. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing.

  13. So she said to Abraham, cast out this slave woman with her son.

  14. For the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.

  15. And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.

  16. But God said to Abraham, be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman.

  17. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you.

  18. For through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  19. And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also.

  20. Because he is your offspring.

  21. So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar.

  22. Putting it on her shoulder along with the child and sent her away.

  23. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

  24. When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.

  25. And then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bow shot.

  26. For she said, let not me look on the death of the child.

  27. And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.

  28. And God heard the voice of the boy.

  29. And the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her,

  30. What troubles you, Hagar?

  31. Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

  32. Up.

  33. Lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand.

  34. For I will make him into a great nation.

  35. And then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water.

  36. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

  37. And God was with the boy and he grew up.

  38. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow.

  39. He lived in the wilderness of Paran.

  40. And his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

  41. At that time, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham,

  42. God is with you in all that you do.

  43. Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity.

  44. But as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.

  45. And Abraham said, I will swear.

  46. When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized,

  47. Abimelech said, I do not know who has done this thing.

  48. He did not tell me and I have not heard of it until today.

  49. So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech.

  50. And the two men made a covenant.

  51. Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.

  52. And Abimelech said to Abraham,

  53. What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?

  54. And he said, These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand that this may be a witness for me that I dug this well.

  55. Therefore, that place was called Beersheba because there both of them swore an oath.

  56. So they made a covenant at Beersheba.

  57. Then Abimelech and Thichol, the commander of his army, rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

  58. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

  59. And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

  60. Abraham!

  61. Well, good morning, everyone.

  62. Good to see you, Chelsea.

  63. Yeah, there you are.

  64. Good to see you, Chelsea.

  65. Well, will you pray with me as we come to God's Word?

  66. Come to God's Word.

  67. Heavenly Father, as we sang in our first song, that this is God's only plan.

  68. I pray that as we read Genesis and sit under Genesis 21,

  69. fill us with the conviction that this is your only plan to bring life and blessing and salvation to us and the whole world.

  70. So give us understanding and faith, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  71. Well, Genesis is the first book in the Bible.

  72. Profound, isn't it?

  73. You're starting to think, what are we paying this guy for?

  74. We ask him to go study so that he could share what he's found with us.

  75. Genesis is the first book.

  76. Now, it is profound, okay?

  77. It sets the foundation, the framework for understanding the rest of the Bible.

  78. This is God's only plan.

  79. As we come to the birth of Isaac, the heir of all God's promises, of God's plan,

  80. we've got to remember the larger story going on here.

  81. Sin entered the world and brought God's curse, God's judgment, instead of blessing.

  82. We've seen in Noah's flood, we've seen the fire at Sodom,

  83. that the judge of all the earth must do what is right.

  84. He is just.

  85. How will God redeem and save his world?

  86. Enter Abraham.

  87. Not because Abraham is any better than the rest of the world,

  88. but God graciously calls him.

  89. He makes a covenant with him.

  90. God is creating his own family,

  91. calling them out of the world,

  92. a people for himself of all nations.

  93. He says all the nations will be blessed through him,

  94. through this family.

  95. Now how will God's saving purposes for the world be achieved?

  96. The tension in Abraham's story has been,

  97. there's no son, there's no heir.

  98. How can God's purposes be achieved if there's no heir to carry out God's purposes?

  99. And here in Genesis 21,

  100. we're going to see three crucial things to understand about God keeping his promise

  101. in providing an heir to save the whole world.

  102. Here's what we're going to see.

  103. In verses 1 to 7,

  104. the Lord keeps his promise by doing himself what's humanly impossible.

  105. In verses 8 to 21,

  106. the one who is going to inherit everything is the son of promise,

  107. not the son of human ability.

  108. And then in verses 22 to 34,

  109. the inheritance is just a matter of time.

  110. It's coming because God's everlasting.

  111. So that's where we're headed.

  112. So with the birth of Isaac,

  113. we're coming to the climax,

  114. one of the climaxes in the story.

  115. And there's something obvious.

  116. If we know the story well,

  117. you've heard it lots of times,

  118. we can take it for granted.

  119. We're told in verse 5,

  120. Abraham was 100 years old

  121. when his son Isaac was born to him.

  122. It is repeated a few more times,

  123. so we get the point.

  124. Verse 2,

  125. in his old age.

  126. Verse 7,

  127. in his old age.

  128. When we're first introduced to Abraham and Sarah,

  129. back in chapter 11,

  130. we're told she has no children,

  131. and she is now 90 years old.

  132. She's past menopause.

  133. The way of women has ceased,

  134. we heard earlier.

  135. And yet it's repeated here

  136. as if it's kind of

  137. offending our intelligence.

  138. It's just repeated so much.

  139. Verse 3,

  140. Sarah,

  141. Sarah conceived

  142. and bore Abraham a son.

  143. Verse 3,

  144. who was born to him,

  145. to Abraham,

  146. whom Sarah bore him.

  147. We get the point, right?

  148. At the end,

  149. verse 7,

  150. it finishes with Sarah's astonishment.

  151. Who would have said to Abraham

  152. that Sarah would nurse children?

  153. Yet I have borne him a son

  154. in his old age.

  155. We get it.

  156. It's Sarah and Abraham's child.

  157. Abraham was 75

  158. when God first called him,

  159. back in chapter 12.

  160. What if God had given Abraham and Sarah

  161. the heir straight away

  162. when they were 75?

  163. They would have rejoiced,

  164. wouldn't they?

  165. They were no newlyweds.

  166. They'd had a lot of heartache already.

  167. They would have been rejoicing.

  168. Wow.

  169. Instead,

  170. God keeps showing up

  171. and just

  172. reaffirms his promise.

  173. You will have a son.

  174. Look toward heaven.

  175. Number the stars.

  176. If you're able to,

  177. so shall your offspring be.

  178. And Abraham believed the Lord

  179. and it was counted to him

  180. as righteousness.

  181. Still no child.

  182. At 86,

  183. they get sick of waiting.

  184. They want to help God

  185. keep his promise

  186. by their own ability,

  187. using Hagar as a surrogate.

  188. And they make an absolute mess

  189. of things.

  190. Then at 99 years old,

  191. the Lord makes the covenant

  192. in chapter 17,

  193. and Abraham,

  194. the man of faith,

  195. hears Yahweh's promise again,

  196. I will give you a son

  197. by Sarah,

  198. and he laughed.

  199. He laughs

  200. in disbelief.

  201. Chapter 18,

  202. the Lord promises Sarah,

  203. she laughs.

  204. They can't believe it.

  205. They're very much like us,

  206. aren't they?

  207. They can only imagine

  208. that God can do

  209. what they think is possible.

  210. How much are we anxious today?

  211. Because we just can't see

  212. how it could possibly,

  213. how he could possibly

  214. look after us.

  215. They're just like us.

  216. They're too afraid to hope.

  217. It just hurts.

  218. It actually hurts too much

  219. when you just cling

  220. to God's promises

  221. and they don't come true

  222. for 25 years.

  223. They can't believe it anymore.

  224. So what are we meant

  225. to be seeing here?

  226. What would they have known

  227. now that they're holding

  228. Isaac in their hands?

  229. What would they have known

  230. that day?

  231. I think they would have known this.

  232. They had nothing,

  233. we had nothing to do

  234. with the birth of this child

  235. whatsoever.

  236. We had nothing to do with it.

  237. And nothing is too wonderful

  238. for the Lord.

  239. He can do anything.

  240. This is impossible.

  241. When things seem hopeless,

  242. Yahweh visited.

  243. He did it.

  244. He did it himself.

  245. Mercifully.

  246. Impossibly.

  247. The Lord has done this

  248. and it is wonderful

  249. in our eyes.

  250. every time they

  251. or someone else

  252. use Isaac's name.

  253. Remember,

  254. it means laughter.

  255. Hey, laughter,

  256. come wash your hands

  257. before dinner.

  258. Laughter,

  259. tidy up your tent.

  260. It would have reminded them

  261. every day

  262. about two things.

  263. When they heard

  264. God's promise,

  265. they both laughed.

  266. They didn't believe God.

  267. It would have reminded them

  268. of Hagar incident.

  269. It would have reminded

  270. of putting Sarah

  271. in danger

  272. with Abimelech,

  273. what we saw last week.

  274. If God had left it up

  275. to them

  276. and their faith,

  277. Abraham would have

  278. stuffed it up.

  279. Every day

  280. they would have had

  281. that reminder.

  282. They laughed.

  283. But the second thing

  284. and the more important thing,

  285. every time they heard

  286. laughter,

  287. his name is a daily

  288. reminder of the Lord's

  289. gracious faithfulness

  290. to keep his word,

  291. his promise.

  292. Let's emphasize here,

  293. verse 1,

  294. as he had said,

  295. as he had promised

  296. at the time

  297. of which

  298. God had spoken

  299. to him.

  300. And here we see

  301. Sarah laughing again.

  302. She's laughing.

  303. This is the laugh

  304. that God's grace

  305. gives you.

  306. God has made

  307. laughter for me.

  308. What's the right response

  309. to God keeping his promise?

  310. I think we see here

  311. in Sarah and Abraham.

  312. If you see how wonderful

  313. God keeping his word is,

  314. you praise.

  315. You just,

  316. wow,

  317. that you are a God

  318. who keeps your word

  319. so graciously

  320. despite my lack of faith

  321. and lack of obedience.

  322. You praise.

  323. You make me laugh

  324. and the right response

  325. is obedience.

  326. Abraham obeys.

  327. He names and circumcises

  328. Isaac in covenant obedience.

  329. Praise and obedience.

  330. So what are we seeing

  331. here in Genesis,

  332. the first book

  333. of the Bible?

  334. How will God save

  335. all the nations

  336. of the earth?

  337. He will graciously

  338. keep his covenant promises

  339. by doing what's

  340. humanly impossible,

  341. visiting himself.

  342. There's a trend

  343. at the moment

  344. of evangelical,

  345. I don't know

  346. if you know or not,

  347. we're an evangelical church.

  348. We're all about

  349. the message,

  350. the promise

  351. fulfilled in Jesus.

  352. That's at the heart

  353. of evangelical Christianity.

  354. There's a trend

  355. of evangelicals

  356. going to Catholicism

  357. and Eastern Orthodox,

  358. just that tradition

  359. way of doing church.

  360. Are we just

  361. one different branch

  362. of all the different

  363. types of Christianity

  364. out there

  365. in the marketplace?

  366. Is this just

  367. one way

  368. of doing Christianity?

  369. I'm going to say no

  370. because Genesis

  371. is the first book

  372. of the Bible.

  373. John Woodhouse,

  374. he's the former principal

  375. of Moore College.

  376. He came and spoke

  377. at our church camp

  378. a number of years ago.

  379. He wrote a tiny book

  380. but it was profound

  381. in my understanding.

  382. It's called

  383. God of Word

  384. and he says this,

  385. it is not that we

  386. evangelicals

  387. emphasize the Word

  388. of God

  389. while Catholics

  390. emphasize sacraments

  391. and charismatics

  392. emphasize the Holy Spirit

  393. and liberals

  394. emphasize good works.

  395. God of God

  396. Woodhouse says this,

  397. this is really simple

  398. but it's profound.

  399. Where you have

  400. the Word of God

  401. creating faith

  402. in God,

  403. there is all

  404. of biblical Christianity.

  405. That's what we're

  406. seeing here.

  407. It's God

  408. keeping His Word.

  409. That is Christianity.

  410. That is how

  411. He's going to

  412. fulfill His promise.

  413. Well,

  414. verse 8,

  415. the second thing,

  416. the second foundation

  417. we learn here.

  418. How many,

  419. how common is it

  420. at weddings

  421. or special family events,

  422. Christmas Day

  423. or something,

  424. at some point

  425. there's some family

  426. bust up,

  427. isn't there?

  428. Like,

  429. there's something

  430. about those

  431. special days

  432. that,

  433. I don't know,

  434. emotion,

  435. maybe it is because

  436. it's the special day.

  437. Emotions are high

  438. and just those

  439. old jealousies

  440. and grudges,

  441. they can't,

  442. they just wait

  443. for that day.

  444. Here we've got

  445. that day,

  446. verse 8,

  447. this is Abraham

  448. and Sarah's

  449. greatest celebration

  450. in their life.

  451. They're throwing

  452. a party

  453. with the birth

  454. of Isaac

  455. when he's weaned.

  456. In our culture,

  457. it might be the first

  458. birthday party

  459. but Isaac here

  460. is probably two,

  461. maybe three,

  462. little infant.

  463. Ishmael would be

  464. 13 or 14

  465. and just as

  466. Hagar

  467. taunted

  468. Sarah

  469. back in

  470. chapter 16,

  471. here we've got

  472. Ishmael

  473. laughing,

  474. maybe mocking.

  475. It's not quite,

  476. it's hard to know

  477. what to imagine

  478. here.

  479. The word laughing

  480. is different

  481. to previous verses.

  482. It's the same

  483. word that

  484. when Lot

  485. was warning

  486. his sons-in-law

  487. get out of Sodom,

  488. they thought

  489. he was jesting.

  490. And then Potiphar's

  491. wife,

  492. which we see

  493. later in Genesis,

  494. she uses this

  495. word as

  496. Joseph was

  497. making sport

  498. of her.

  499. So jesting,

  500. making sport,

  501. something's going

  502. on here.

  503. It's Isaac's

  504. big celebration,

  505. he's the heir

  506. and Sarah

  507. sees Ishmael

  508. doing something

  509. that's,

  510. it's just not

  511. befitting the

  512. moment and she

  513. flips out.

  514. Drive out.

  515. This is

  516. forceful language,

  517. drive that

  518. slave woman

  519. out.

  520. Like she can't

  521. even use her

  522. name,

  523. like even

  524. though she

  525. used Hagar

  526. as a surrogate,

  527. she can't

  528. even use her

  529. name.

  530. This is

  531. deep anger.

  532. With her

  533. son.

  534. It's also

  535. Abraham's

  536. son.

  537. Now verse

  538. 11,

  539. Abraham is

  540. deeply

  541. distressed.

  542. He has

  543. deep affection

  544. for Ishmael.

  545. But the

  546. shock,

  547. isn't the

  548. shock,

  549. verse 12,

  550. what God's

  551. response is?

  552. Be not

  553. displeased

  554. because of

  555. the boy

  556. and because

  557. of your

  558. slave woman.

  559. Whatever Sarah

  560. says to you,

  561. do as she

  562. tells you,

  563. for through

  564. Isaac

  565. shall your

  566. offspring be

  567. named.

  568. God's

  569. love.

  570. The Lord

  571. agrees with

  572. the wisdom

  573. of these

  574. boys parting

  575. ways but

  576. he's not

  577. agreeing with

  578. Sarah's

  579. jealousy or

  580. pettiness.

  581. We shouldn't

  582. equate those

  583. two things.

  584. Now this

  585. feels so

  586. wrong,

  587. doesn't it,

  588. to send

  589. off a child

  590. in the care

  591. of his

  592. mother like

  593. this.

  594. It must

  595. have hurt

  596. Abraham

  597. incredibly,

  598. likely never

  599. to see

  600. them again.

  601. But he

  602. did have

  603. this

  604. reassurance

  605. that the

  606. Lord would

  607. look after

  608. him.

  609. He would

  610. become a

  611. great nation.

  612. If we

  613. look at the

  614. end of this

  615. section,

  616. I suspect

  617. a lot of

  618. people would

  619. be happy

  620. with the

  621. blessings

  622. Ishmael

  623. receives.

  624. If you

  625. got this

  626. from God

  627. in life,

  628. I think a

  629. lot of

  630. people would

  631. be content.

  632. He gets

  633. a family,

  634. his name,

  635. he's got a

  636. legacy,

  637. he's going

  638. to have a

  639. nation after

  640. his name,

  641. he's protected

  642. from disaster,

  643. that's pretty

  644. good,

  645. he gets

  646. provided for,

  647. we're told

  648. God is with

  649. him in

  650. all he

  651. does,

  652. so somehow

  653. God gives

  654. him a

  655. measure of

  656. success in

  657. his life,

  658. he becomes

  659. even an

  660. expert with

  661. the bow,

  662. like he's

  663. powerful,

  664. don't mess

  665. with Ishmael,

  666. he becomes

  667. powerful.

  668. I think a lot

  669. of people would

  670. be happy with

  671. those blessings.

  672. things.

  673. So what are

  674. we meant to

  675. see here?

  676. How are we

  677. meant to make

  678. sense of

  679. Ishmael being

  680. sent off?

  681. It's hard

  682. for us to

  683. understand today,

  684. but the

  685. firstborn back

  686. then in a

  687. patriarchal,

  688. agrarian time,

  689. the firstborn

  690. became the

  691. heir of

  692. the land

  693. and as

  694. the heir,

  695. as the

  696. head of

  697. the family,

  698. it was the

  699. heir's job to

  700. look after the

  701. family.

  702. The problem

  703. we've got

  704. here,

  705. we've got

  706. two

  707. heirs.

  708. firstborns.

  709. It's a

  710. problem of

  711. their sinful

  712. making,

  713. by trying to

  714. take matters

  715. into their

  716. own hands.

  717. We've got

  718. two firstborns.

  719. One is

  720. chosen ahead

  721. of time by

  722. God, the

  723. one provided

  724. by God

  725. himself,

  726. impossibly

  727. provided,

  728. simply because

  729. God promised.

  730. The other is

  731. the son of

  732. Abraham and

  733. Sarah, what

  734. they could

  735. humanly do.

  736. Ishmael is

  737. the son of

  738. human effort,

  739. Isaac is

  740. the son of

  741. God's

  742. promise.

  743. We've got

  744. two heirs.

  745. Now, Ishmael

  746. is blessed

  747. a lot with

  748. earthly things,

  749. but he

  750. doesn't have

  751. the covenant

  752. promises.

  753. Now, if

  754. we've got a

  755. problem with

  756. this not

  757. being equally

  758. distributed,

  759. I think we

  760. don't get how

  761. free.

  762. God choosing

  763. Abraham in

  764. the first

  765. place is,

  766. it's totally

  767. free, he

  768. didn't have

  769. to do

  770. that.

  771. His covenant

  772. with Abraham,

  773. it's free,

  774. he didn't

  775. have to do

  776. that.

  777. Choosing

  778. Isaac, it's

  779. God's free

  780. choice to

  781. choose Isaac.

  782. The promise

  783. is God's

  784. free choice,

  785. it's his

  786. choice.

  787. But here

  788. in Genesis,

  789. Ishmael

  790. and Isaac

  791. represent two

  792. polar opposites

  793. and the

  794. Apostle Paul

  795. picks this up

  796. in Galatians

  797. 4.

  798. He says,

  799. the sending

  800. off of Ishmael

  801. is a picture

  802. illustration,

  803. salvation by

  804. human ability

  805. and salvation

  806. by faith in

  807. God's promise.

  808. They are

  809. incompatible,

  810. they can't

  811. dwell together.

  812. this isn't

  813. some later

  814. theology of

  815. the Bible.

  816. This isn't

  817. evangelicals

  818. imposing the

  819. whole, it's

  820. just faith.

  821. It's right

  822. here in

  823. Genesis.

  824. Only by

  825. promise, only

  826. by faith in

  827. the promise,

  828. is there

  829. blessing and

  830. inheritance.

  831. It is not

  832. the son of

  833. human ability

  834. that will

  835. inherit.

  836. Well, at the

  837. start of the

  838. Great Awakening,

  839. mass, mass

  840. revivals in

  841. America and

  842. the UK,

  843. there was a

  844. group who

  845. met together

  846. one night,

  847. John and

  848. Charles Wesley,

  849. we sing some

  850. of Charles

  851. Wesley hymns

  852. still today

  853. and they're

  854. reading the

  855. preface of

  856. Martin Luther's

  857. commentary on

  858. Galatians and

  859. they're reading

  860. aloud this

  861. sentence.

  862. When it

  863. comes to

  864. salvation,

  865. what have

  866. we then

  867. nothing to

  868. do?

  869. know nothing.

  870. Only to

  871. accept of

  872. him who

  873. of God

  874. is made

  875. unto us

  876. our

  877. wisdom

  878. and

  879. righteousness,

  880. sanctification

  881. and redemption.

  882. And William

  883. Holland, who

  884. was there that

  885. night, he

  886. said,

  887. at those

  888. words there

  889. came over

  890. me such

  891. a power

  892. that I

  893. cannot

  894. well

  895. describe.

  896. My

  897. great

  898. burden

  899. fell off

  900. in an

  901. instant.

  902. My

  903. heart

  904. was so

  905. filled

  906. with

  907. peace

  908. and

  909. love

  910. I

  911. burst

  912. into

  913. tears.

  914. I

  915. almost

  916. thought

  917. I

  918. saw

  919. my

  920. saviour.

  921. My

  922. companions

  923. perceiving

  924. me so

  925. affected

  926. fell on

  927. their

  928. knees

  929. and

  930. prayed

  931. and

  932. when

  933. I

  934. afterwards

  935. went

  936. into

  937. the

  938. street

  939. I

  940. could

  941. scarcely

  942. feel

  943. the

  944. ground

  945. I

  946. trot

  947. upon.

  948. No one

  949. will

  950. ever

  951. inherit

  952. salvation

  953. by human

  954. abilities.

  955. salvation

  956. we're

  957. seeing

  958. here

  959. salvation

  960. is by

  961. the

  962. son

  963. of

  964. promise.

  965. It's

  966. always

  967. been

  968. faith

  969. in

  970. the

  971. promise

  972. of

  973. those

  974. who

  975. inherit

  976. everything.

  977. Have

  978. we

  979. got

  980. nothing

  981. to

  982. do?

  983. Nothing.

  984. Nothing.

  985. Just

  986. accept

  987. of

  988. him.

  989. Here

  990. it is

  991. right in

  992. the first

  993. book of

  994. the

  995. Bible.

  996. The

  997. third

  998. thing

  999. verses

  1000. 22

  1001. to

  1002. 34

  1003. we've

  1004. got

  1005. this

  1006. abrupt

  1007. scene

  1008. change

  1009. where

  1010. Bimelech

  1011. turns up

  1012. again

  1013. who we

  1014. saw last

  1015. week.

  1016. What's

  1017. he doing

  1018. here?

  1019. Twice

  1020. we're

  1021. told

  1022. verse

  1023. 24

  1024. and

  1025. then

  1026. at

  1027. the

  1028. end

  1029. in

  1030. verse

  1031. 34

  1032. Abraham

  1033. he has

  1034. no rights

  1035. he's

  1036. not a

  1037. citizen

  1038. he's a

  1039. sojourner

  1040. he's

  1041. got a

  1042. temporary

  1043. work

  1044. visa

  1045. to put

  1046. it in

  1047. today's

  1048. language.

  1049. We've

  1050. just seen

  1051. one

  1052. exile

  1053. so

  1054. Abimelech

  1055. turning up

  1056. with his

  1057. commander

  1058. by his

  1059. side

  1060. you might

  1061. start to

  1062. think this

  1063. could be

  1064. intimidation

  1065. he's

  1066. another

  1067. exile

  1068. but

  1069. he's

  1070. got his

  1071. muscle

  1072. next to

  1073. him

  1074. but

  1075. no

  1076. this

  1077. king

  1078. wants

  1079. to make

  1080. a

  1081. treaty

  1082. with

  1083. this

  1084. foreigner

  1085. Abraham

  1086. owns

  1087. no

  1088. land

  1089. and

  1090. yet

  1091. Abimelech

  1092. seems

  1093. concerned

  1094. for his

  1095. people's

  1096. future

  1097. his

  1098. posterity

  1099. he

  1100. even

  1101. mentions

  1102. the

  1103. land

  1104. so

  1105. Abimelech

  1106. as we

  1107. saw

  1108. last

  1109. week

  1110. he's

  1111. experienced

  1112. God's

  1113. blessing

  1114. of

  1115. Abraham

  1116. first

  1117. hand

  1118. even

  1119. when

  1120. Abraham

  1121. didn't

  1122. deserve

  1123. it

  1124. he'd

  1125. been

  1126. taught

  1127. to

  1128. submit

  1129. to

  1130. Abraham

  1131. as a

  1132. prophet

  1133. to

  1134. intercede

  1135. for him

  1136. to be

  1137. blessed

  1138. perhaps

  1139. he saw

  1140. Abraham

  1141. still

  1142. prospering

  1143. perhaps

  1144. he heard

  1145. the news

  1146. of this

  1147. child

  1148. that

  1149. that

  1150. is

  1151. impossible

  1152. if

  1153. God

  1154. is

  1155. with

  1156. him

  1157. in

  1158. giving

  1159. this

  1160. air

  1161. I

  1162. better

  1163. do

  1164. something

  1165. for

  1166. my

  1167. people

  1168. Abimelech

  1169. a king

  1170. of the

  1171. nations

  1172. is

  1173. seeing

  1174. this

  1175. foreigner

  1176. with

  1177. the

  1178. eyes

  1179. of

  1180. faith

  1181. God

  1182. is

  1183. with

  1184. Abraham

  1185. I

  1186. think

  1187. he's

  1188. like

  1189. Psalm

  1190. 2

  1191. urges

  1192. kings

  1193. be

  1194. wise

  1195. kiss

  1196. kiss

  1197. in

  1198. peace

  1199. God's

  1200. chosen

  1201. one

  1202. I

  1203. think

  1204. we're

  1205. starting

  1206. to see

  1207. God's

  1208. promises

  1209. to

  1210. Abraham

  1211. come

  1212. true

  1213. he is

  1214. a

  1215. nation

  1216. coming

  1217. for

  1218. peace

  1219. and

  1220. blessing

  1221. then

  1222. we've

  1223. got

  1224. this

  1225. grievance

  1226. Abraham

  1227. raises

  1228. a

  1229. grievance

  1230. about

  1231. a

  1232. well

  1233. that

  1234. he

  1235. dug

  1236. and

  1237. so

  1238. he's

  1239. got

  1240. the

  1241. right

  1242. to

  1243. use

  1244. it

  1245. but

  1246. Abimelech

  1247. servants

  1248. have

  1249. taken

  1250. it

  1251. Abraham

  1252. is

  1253. not

  1254. content

  1255. with

  1256. peace

  1257. faking

  1258. he's

  1259. not

  1260. going

  1261. to

  1262. make

  1263. a

  1264. peace

  1265. treaty

  1266. and

  1267. just

  1268. ignore

  1269. this

  1270. grievance

  1271. he's

  1272. not

  1273. breaking

  1274. he's

  1275. not

  1276. refusing

  1277. to

  1278. enter

  1279. this

  1280. peace

  1281. agreement

  1282. they

  1283. reconcile

  1284. and

  1285. they

  1286. make

  1287. this

  1288. peace

  1289. treaty

  1290. I

  1291. think

  1292. the

  1293. emphasis

  1294. is

  1295. on

  1296. the

  1297. land

  1298. here

  1299. they

  1300. made

  1301. a

  1302. covenant

  1303. at

  1304. Bathsheba

  1305. verse

  1306. 32

  1307. Bathsheba

  1308. is at

  1309. the

  1310. southern

  1311. end

  1312. of

  1313. the

  1314. promised

  1315. land

  1316. now

  1317. maybe

  1318. I'm

  1319. not

  1320. quite

  1321. sure

  1322. but

  1323. maybe

  1324. that's

  1325. the

  1326. significance

  1327. of

  1328. planting

  1329. a

  1330. tree

  1331. it

  1332. takes

  1333. decades

  1334. generations

  1335. for a

  1336. tree

  1337. to

  1338. fully

  1339. grow

  1340. and

  1341. here

  1342. Abraham

  1343. is

  1344. calling

  1345. on

  1346. the

  1347. name

  1348. of

  1349. God

  1350. calling

  1351. him

  1352. the

  1353. everlasting

  1354. God

  1355. he's

  1356. worshipping

  1357. he's

  1358. saying

  1359. Yahweh

  1360. history

  1361. is in

  1362. your

  1363. hands

  1364. the

  1365. nations

  1366. are

  1367. in

  1368. your

  1369. hands

  1370. the

  1371. earth

  1372. belongs

  1373. to

  1374. you

  1375. my

  1376. offspring

  1377. my

  1378. future

  1379. it's

  1380. it's

  1381. you

  1382. you're

  1383. the

  1384. everlasting

  1385. God

  1386. I

  1387. think

  1388. calling

  1389. God

  1390. the

  1391. everlasting

  1392. God

  1393. makes

  1394. us

  1395. recall

  1396. the

  1397. covenant

  1398. in

  1399. chapter

  1400. 17

  1401. verse

  1402. 8

  1403. I

  1404. will

  1405. give

  1406. to

  1407. you

  1408. and

  1409. to

  1410. your

  1411. offspring

  1412. after

  1413. you

  1414. the

  1415. land

  1416. of

  1417. your

  1418. sojournings

  1419. all

  1420. the

  1421. land

  1422. of

  1423. Canaan

  1424. for

  1425. an

  1426. everlasting

  1427. possession

  1428. and I

  1429. will

  1430. be

  1431. their

  1432. God

  1433. I

  1434. think

  1435. what

  1436. we're

  1437. meant

  1438. to

  1439. be

  1440. seeing

  1441. here

  1442. he's

  1443. got

  1444. the

  1445. air

  1446. he's

  1447. got

  1448. the

  1449. nations

  1450. coming

  1451. for

  1452. peace

  1453. and

  1454. blessing

  1455. and

  1456. here

  1457. he's

  1458. planting

  1459. a tree

  1460. and he's

  1461. worshipping

  1462. the

  1463. everlasting

  1464. !

  1465. God

  1466. he doesn't

  1467. own

  1468. land

  1469. yet

  1470. but he's

  1471. basically

  1472. going

  1473. it's

  1474. as good

  1475. as mine

  1476. already

  1477. the

  1478. inheritance

  1479. is

  1480. just a

  1481. matter

  1482. of

  1483. time

  1484. if

  1485. the

  1486. everlasting

  1487. God

  1488. has

  1489. made

  1490. a

  1491. covenant

  1492. with

  1493. me

  1494. it's

  1495. just

  1496. a

  1497. matter

  1498. of

  1499. time

  1500. the

  1501. full

  1502. inheritance

  1503. !

  1504. is

  1505. coming

  1506. if

  1507. you

  1508. could

  1509. imagine

  1510. going

  1511. up

  1512. to

  1513. Abraham

  1514. in

  1515. this

  1516. moment

  1517. he's

  1518. worshipping

  1519. beside

  1520. this

  1521. tree

  1522. he's

  1523. planted

  1524. and

  1525. just

  1526. asking

  1527. what

  1528. are

  1529. you

  1530. doing

  1531. I

  1532. think

  1533. this

  1534. foreigner

  1535. might

  1536. say

  1537. I'm

  1538. going

  1539. to

  1540. possess

  1541. all

  1542. this

  1543. land

  1544. one

  1545. day

  1546. further

  1547. than

  1548. your

  1549. eyes

  1550. can

  1551. see

  1552. like

  1553. he's

  1554. got

  1555. a

  1556. well

  1557. that's

  1558. great

  1559. that's

  1560. all

  1561. he's

  1562. got

  1563. would

  1564. you

  1565. think

  1566. he's

  1567. crazy

  1568. Abimelech

  1569. took him

  1570. seriously

  1571. he saw

  1572. God

  1573. was

  1574. with

  1575. him

  1576. now

  1577. that

  1578. promise

  1579. becomes

  1580. even

  1581. clearer

  1582. later

  1583. on

  1584. in

  1585. Psalm

    Psalms 2:8

  1586. 2

  1587. verse

  1588. 8

  1589. the

  1590. Lord

  1591. says

  1592. to

  1593. his

  1594. son

  1595. ask

  1596. of

  1597. me

  1598. I

  1599. will

  1600. make

  1601. the

  1602. nations

  1603. your

  1604. heritage

  1605. the

  1606. ends

  1607. of

  1608. the

  1609. earth

  1610. your

  1611. possession

  1612. in

  1613. Israel's

  1614. history

  1615. they

  1616. were

  1617. a

  1618. small

  1619. player

  1620. on

  1621. the

  1622. world

  1623. stage

  1624. like

  1625. you

  1626. take

  1627. even

  1628. the

  1629. highest

  1630. points

  1631. of

  1632. their

  1633. history

  1634. it would

  1635. still be

  1636. crazy

  1637. to believe

  1638. that

  1639. promise

  1640. but

  1641. especially

  1642. when their

  1643. land got

  1644. conquered

  1645. they had

  1646. no

  1647. king

  1648. no

  1649. heir

  1650. on

  1651. the

  1652. throne

  1653. is it

  1654. crazy

  1655. to believe

  1656. that God's

  1657. heir

  1658. is coming

  1659. he will

  1660. possess

  1661. the whole

  1662. earth

  1663. it's not

  1664. crazy

  1665. if it's

  1666. by the

  1667. Lord's

  1668. impossible

  1669. doing

  1670. because he

  1671. keeps his

  1672. promise

  1673. and he's

  1674. the everlasting

  1675. God

  1676. he visits

  1677. again

  1678. at the

  1679. exact

  1680. appointed

  1681. time

  1682. saying

  1683. to

  1684. Mary

  1685. a young

  1686. virgin

  1687. more

  1688. impossible

  1689. than

  1690. Sarah

  1691. behold

  1692. you will

  1693. conceive

  1694. in your

  1695. womb

  1696. and bear

  1697. a son

  1698. and you

  1699. shall

  1700. call

  1701. his

  1702. name

  1703. Jesus

  1704. he

  1705. will

  1706. be

  1707. great

  1708. and will

  1709. be

  1710. called

  1711. the

  1712. son

  1713. of

  1714. the

  1715. most

  1716. high

  1717. of

  1718. his

  1719. kingdom

  1720. there

  1721. will

  1722. be

  1723. no

  1724. end

  1725. everlasting

  1726. we

  1727. find

  1728. another

  1729. man

  1730. calling

  1731. on the

  1732. name

  1733. of

  1734. the

  1735. Lord

  1736. in

  1737. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  1738. chapter

  1739. 23

  1740. beside

  1741. another

  1742. tree

  1743. Jesus

  1744. is being

  1745. crucified

  1746. on a

  1747. tree

  1748. and God

  1749. the

  1750. father

  1751. is not

  1752. with

  1753. him

  1754. he's

  1755. cursing

  1756. him

  1757. he's

  1758. casting

  1759. him

  1760. out

  1761. and this

  1762. criminal

  1763. dying

  1764. beside

  1765. him

  1766. looks

  1767. at

  1768. that

  1769. guy

  1770. and

  1771. says

  1772. remember

  1773. me

  1774. when

  1775. you

  1776. come

  1777. into

  1778. your

  1779. kingdom

  1780. is

  1781. he

  1782. crazy

  1783. is he

  1784. right

  1785. to think

  1786. this

  1787. cursed

  1788. man

  1789. is the

  1790. promised

  1791. son

  1792. who

  1793. will

  1794. inherit

  1795. the

  1796. earth

  1797. and

  1798. does

  1799. he

  1800. really

  1801. think

  1802. after

  1803. all

  1804. the

  1805. sins

  1806. he

  1807. is

  1808. guilty

  1809. of

  1810. he

  1811. admits

  1812. that

  1813. that

  1814. he

  1815. has

  1816. any

  1817. share

  1818. in

  1819. that

  1820. inheritance

  1821. is he

  1822. crazy

  1823. are we

  1824. crazy

  1825. this

  1826. morning

  1827. worshipping

  1828. the name

  1829. of

  1830. Jesus

  1831. as

  1832. Yahweh

  1833. that he

  1834. is the

  1835. heir of

  1836. all the

  1837. earth

  1838. that we

  1839. are

  1840. co-heirs

  1841. of the

  1842. world

  1843. to

  1844. come

  1845. not

  1846. we're

  1847. not

  1848. crazy

  1849. if we

  1850. see

  1851. who

  1852. God

  1853. is

  1854. in

  1855. Genesis

  1856. the

  1857. son

  1858. of

  1859. human

  1860. ability

  1861. will

  1862. not

  1863. share

  1864. in

  1865. the

  1866. inheritance

  1867. !

  1868. It's

  1869. always

  1870. and

  1871. forever

  1872. been

  1873. by

  1874. faith

  1875. in

  1876. God's

  1877. promise

  1878. when

  1879. he

  1880. visits

  1881. and

  1882. he

  1883. does

  1884. it

  1885. it's

  1886. all

  1887. his

  1888. doing

  1889. and

  1890. it's

  1891. impossible

  1892. and

  1893. he's

  1894. the

  1895. everlasting

  1896. God

  1897. whose

  1898. plan

  1899. to

  1900. rescue

  1901. the

  1902. whole

  1903. world

  1904. is

  1905. doing

  1906. what

  1907. is

  1908. impossible

  1909. for

  1910. you

  1911. and

  1912. I

  1913. can

  1914. do

  1915. and

  1916. we

  1917. are

  1918. caught

  1919. up

  1920. in

  1921. God's

  1922. story

  1923. simply

  1924. by

  1925. faith

  1926. in

  1927. the

  1928. promised

  1929. son

  1930. that

  1931. all

  1932. the

  1933. covenant

  1934. promises

  1935. are

  1936. yes

  1937. and

  1938. amen

  1939. they're

  1940. yours

  1941. they're

  1942. mine

  1943. whether

  1944. our

  1945. story

  1946. is

  1947. dull

  1948. or

  1949. full

  1950. of

  1951. darkness

  1952. we

  1953. can

  1954. laugh

  1955. with

  1956. joy

  1957. and

  1958. wonder

  1959. our

  1960. life

  1961. and

  1962. future

  1963. is

  1964. bound

  1965. up

  1966. with

  1967. this

  1968. son

  1969. of

  1970. promise

  1971. because

  1972. God

  1973. does

  1974. the

  1975. impossible

  1976. he

  1977. always

  1978. keeps

  1979. his

  1980. word

  1981. where

  1982. we

  1983. have

  1984. God's

  1985. promise

  1986. and

  1987. faith

  1988. in

  1989. God's

  1990. promise

  1991. that's

  1992. all

  1993. that's

  1994. all

  1995. biblical

  1996. Christianity

  1997. the

  1998. inheritance

  1999. !

  2000. It's

  2001. just a

  2002. matter

  2003. of

  2004. time

  2005. it's

  2006. coming

  2007. plant a

  2008. tree

  2009. if that

  2010. helps

  2011. I don't

  2012. know

  2013. but

  2014. it's

  2015. coming

  2016. it's

  2017. a

  2018. matter

  2019. of

  2020. time

  2021. we

  2022. pray

  2023. !

  2024. Let's

  2025. pray!

  2026. Father

  2027. some

  2028. of us

  2029. this

  2030. morning

  2031. are

  2032. doubting

  2033. whether

  2034. we are

  2035. worthy

  2036. enough

  2037. to

  2038. be

  2039. saved

  2040. by

  2041. you

  2042. we

  2043. know

  2044. our

  2045. faith

  2046. is

  2047. regularly

  2048. failing

  2049. our

  2050. worship

  2051. is

  2052. often

  2053. half

  2054. hearted

  2055. we're

  2056. ashamed

  2057. of

  2058. things

  2059. we've

  2060. done

  2061. this

  2062. week

  2063. there's

  2064. others

  2065. of us

  2066. who

  2067. are

  2068. pretty

  2069. proud

  2070. we

  2071. think

  2072. we're

  2073. better

  2074. than

  2075. other

  2076. Christians

  2077. we

  2078. think

  2079. we

  2080. have

  2081. some

  2082. rights

  2083. on

  2084. you

  2085. Lord

  2086. I

  2087. pray

  2088. for

  2089. wherever

  2090. we're

  2091. at

  2092. that

  2093. you

  2094. would

  2095. help

  2096. us

  2097. to

  2098. see

  2099. it's

  2100. all

  2101. you're

  2102. doing

  2103. it's

  2104. all

  2105. your

  2106. promise

  2107. you

  2108. doing

  2109. the

  2110. impossible

  2111. by

  2112. your

  2113. son

  2114. please

  2115. press

  2116. that

  2117. truth

  2118. deep

  2119. into

  2120. our

  2121. hearts

  2122. so

  2123. that

  2124. you

  2125. would

  2126. at

  2127. the

  2128. same

  2129. time

  2130. humble

  2131. us

  2132. and

  2133. lift

  2134. us

  2135. up

  2136. with

  2137. confidence

  2138. do

  2139. this

  2140. so

  2141. that

  2142. we

  2143. will

  2144. respond

  2145. in

  2146. praise

  2147. and

  2148. obedience

  2149. to

  2150. you

  2151. in

  2152. Jesus

  2153. name

  2154. Amen
