  1. After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham.

  2. And he said, here I am.

  3. He said, take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah

  4. and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  5. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  6. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

  7. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

  8. Then Abraham said to his young men, stay here with the donkey.

  9. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  10. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  11. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

  12. So they went both of them together.

  13. And Isaac said to his father, Abraham, my father.

  14. And he said, here I am, my son.

  15. He said, behold, the fire and the wood.

  16. But where is the lamb of a burnt offering?

  17. Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  18. So they went both of them together.

  19. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  20. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  21. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham.

  22. And he said, here I am.

  23. He said, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  24. For now I know that you fear God.

  25. Seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.

  26. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  27. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  28. So Abraham called the name of that place.

  29. The Lord will provide.

  30. As it is said to this day, on the mount of the Lord, it shall be provided.

  31. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said,

  32. By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and not withheld your son, your only son,

  33. I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of the heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  34. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemy.

  35. And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.

  36. So Abraham returned to his young men and they arose and went together to Bathsheba.

  37. And Abraham lived at Bathsheba.

  38. Now after these things, it was told to Abraham,

  39. Behold, Milcah has also born children to your brother Nahor.

  40. Uz, his firstborn.

  41. Buzz, his brother.

  42. Camuel, the father of Aram.

  43. Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf and Bethuel.

  44. Bethuel fathered Rebekah.

  45. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

  46. Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Rumah, bore Teba, Gaham, Tehash and Mecca.

  47. Good morning, everyone.

  48. Will you pray with me as you come to God's word?

  49. Amen.

  50. Father, we all come this morning desperate.

  51. Our life, we need your word.

  52. We need your promises.

  53. We need to see who you are, your character.

  54. We need to understand what you've done for us, the hope you've given us.

  55. I pray that you'll give us, by your spirit, minds that understand your word and hearts that believe and trust.

  56. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  57. Amen.

  58. Well, we are coming to, I'm going to call it the mountaintop of Abraham's growth in faith.

  59. This is the climax of the story of Abraham.

  60. How can Yahweh command such a terrible thing?

  61. Some atheists find this passage absolutely repugnant.

  62. Like Richard Dawkins, he says it pretty powerfully.

  63. This disgraceful story is an example simultaneously of child abuse, bullying in two asymmetrical power relationships,

  64. and the first recorded use of the Nuremberg defence.

  65. I was only obeying orders.

  66. Pretty strong words.

  67. Let's get a broader perspective before we pronounce a guilty verdict on God's character.

  68. Child sacrifice was part of the worship to the god Molech in the land of Canaan, in Abraham's time.

  69. And so we find in Leviticus 18.21, Yahweh prohibits Israel from practising the abominations of the people of the land.

  70. You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Molech.

  71. They offered their children to their god to get further prosperity, further fruitfulness from the gods.

  72. That is not what's happening in this passage.

  73. Abraham and his descendants were to be totally different from the nations around them.

  74. Now it's not just the Canaanites.

  75. In Roman times there was a letter recovered of a man writing to his wife,

  76. and the letter talks about lots of common things you might expect,

  77. and then at the end it's like,

  78. when you give birth to our child, if it's a boy, keep him.

  79. If it's a girl, leave it to die of exposure.

  80. As if it was like, go do the shopping, and by the way, just throw our kid out to die.

  81. Infanticide was very common in the ancient world.

  82. Now whether it's part of religious ritual or not, however far back you go,

  83. it's legal in New South Wales to end a child's life up to 22 weeks in the womb.

  84. Now Dawkins himself defends abortion,

  85. and he was controversial in 2014 when he tweeted,

  86. it would be immoral to bring a disabled child into the world.

  87. Now I'm hesitant to bring up abortion,

  88. because I know it probably brings up some shame or regret,

  89. but please know, if that's you, the blood of Jesus covers that.

  90. I'm just trying to give perspective here on what we're looking at.

  91. How can Yahweh ask this of Abraham?

  92. I'm not trying to sidestep how troubling this command is.

  93. It is troubling.

  94. But it's the wholehearted trust in the biblical God of Abraham,

  95. those who see the wonder in this passage, in this event,

  96. that actually saves children,

  97. both in ancient times and today.

  98. That's why this passage is actually troubling,

  99. because it's so at odds with the character of Yahweh.

  100. What God asks of Abraham here, it's unique.

  101. It is one of a kind.

  102. And the fact that it is unique,

  103. I think is what unlocks the wonder of its message to us today.

  104. So as we come into this passage,

  105. here's what we're going to see.

  106. We're going to see what God asks of Abraham in verses 1 and 2,

  107. offer up your all to me in worship of me.

  108. In verses 3 to 8,

  109. I think we see his obedience is empowered by faith.

  110. We see the Lord will provide the lamb,

  111. and that the Lord swears to bless the world

  112. because of this one man's obedience.

  113. So that's where we're headed.

  114. Have your Bibles open.

  115. Well, verse 1,

  116. After these things,

  117. we saw last week,

  118. the covenant blessings are starting to come in.

  119. The nations of the earth,

  120. with Abimelech,

  121. is coming to Abraham for blessing.

  122. He's at Bathsheba,

  123. the southern border of the promised land,

  124. and he's worshipping.

  125. The promised land is just a matter of time

  126. before he possesses it.

  127. And most of all,

  128. all the promises

  129. hinge on the giving of Isaac.

  130. Isaac has arrived.

  131. All God's plans to save the world

  132. will come through Isaac's line.

  133. And we would expect the story

  134. to just go from strength to strength,

  135. more blessings just pouring in,

  136. but no,

  137. that is the context

  138. for this greatest test

  139. of Abraham's faith and obedience.

  140. Now, one of my deepest fears

  141. is when Emma and the kids

  142. go for a long drive

  143. without me.

  144. Not...

  145. I've got every confidence

  146. as in Emma's driving.

  147. I just realised...

  148. I've got every confidence.

  149. I'm afraid

  150. because it feels like

  151. my whole world

  152. is in that car.

  153. And Emma reminds me,

  154. Christ is my world.

  155. Now, if tragedy was to happen,

  156. that would be...

  157. I do not want that test of faith, okay?

  158. But I don't think

  159. that even comes close

  160. to what Abraham

  161. has commanded here.

  162. It's even more than that

  163. that God is asking

  164. of Abraham.

  165. Take your son,

  166. your only son Isaac,

  167. whom you love,

  168. and go to the land

  169. of Moriah

  170. and offer him there

  171. as a burnt offering

  172. on one of the mountains

  173. of which I shall tell you.

  174. It's his whole world

  175. and it's all God's promises

  176. are bound up

  177. in his son.

  178. We've seen in Abraham

  179. the man of faith.

  180. He's the model of faith.

  181. He's a mixed picture.

  182. The language here

  183. reminds us

  184. of his original call

  185. in chapter 12.

  186. Go to a land

  187. and I'll tell you later

  188. where you're going.

  189. And he obeyed that call.

  190. He is a man of faith.

  191. But then we've also seen him

  192. full of cowardly fear

  193. where he puts Sarah

  194. and the promises of God

  195. in harm's way.

  196. I think sometimes today

  197. we talk about faith,

  198. some people talk about faith

  199. as if they've,

  200. I've always believed in Jesus.

  201. There's nothing further

  202. to develop.

  203. It's this static thing.

  204. I've always had faith.

  205. What are you talking about?

  206. Others speak of their lack of faith

  207. as if it's too weak,

  208. it's too fixed.

  209. I'm never going to change.

  210. But we see in the life of Abraham

  211. growth in faith.

  212. One commentator says,

  213. the test,

  214. instead of breaking him,

  215. brings him to the summit

  216. of his lifelong walk with God.

  217. here we see

  218. Abraham's growth in faith.

  219. And each phrase of the command

  220. must have made the command harder.

  221. Take your son,

  222. your only son,

  223. whom you love.

  224. It must have gone against

  225. all his human affection.

  226. the son whom you love.

  227. Now,

  228. some parents

  229. who struggle to have children

  230. and then

  231. God gives them a child

  232. late in life.

  233. Have you ever noticed

  234. they can be super,

  235. super

  236. protective

  237. of that child.

  238. Abraham had to wait

  239. 25 years.

  240. The son whom you love,

  241. you've just given him.

  242. Now,

  243. give him back.

  244. It seemed to go against

  245. the character of God.

  246. How could he make sense

  247. of this command?

  248. It went against

  249. the revealed plans of God

  250. to save the world.

  251. Remember Abraham's name.

  252. He's the father

  253. of many nations.

  254. All the covenant promises

  255. of God

  256. are bound up

  257. in Isaac.

  258. Isaac.

  259. Isaac.

  260. In that time,

  261. all your identity

  262. and purpose

  263. and future

  264. is bound up

  265. as a family unit.

  266. We think individualistically

  267. today.

  268. But for Abraham,

  269. the firstborn

  270. was the head

  271. of the family,

  272. representing the family.

  273. What's God

  274. asking him to do?

  275. Abraham,

  276. your entire life,

  277. your identity,

  278. your meaning,

  279. your safety,

  280. your security,

  281. your hope,

  282. your significance

  283. in the world.

  284. Give it all up.

  285. Give it all your life

  286. up to me.

  287. Now,

  288. Abraham's test

  289. is very unique.

  290. The specifics

  291. of what God

  292. is asking.

  293. But the fact

  294. that God

  295. tests faith

  296. to the point

  297. where his people

  298. find it

  299. troubling,

  300. perplexing,

  301. even feeling

  302. like God

  303. is an enemy.

  304. How can God

  305. be asking

  306. this of me?

  307. that's par

  308. for the course.

  309. Elizabeth Elliot,

  310. whose husband

  311. died trying

  312. to share

  313. the gospel

  314. as a missionary,

  315. she was once

  316. visiting friends

  317. on a sheep farm

  318. in northern Wales

  319. and sheep

  320. are vulnerable

  321. to disease,

  322. even death

  323. by insects

  324. and parasites.

  325. So once a year

  326. the sheep

  327. were submerged

  328. in a big

  329. vat

  330. of antiseptic

  331. and Elizabeth

  332. said this,

  333. one by one

  334. John sees

  335. the animals

  336. as their

  337. Lord and

  338. Master

  339. was pushing

  340. their head

  341. under,

  342. drowning them

  343. at least as far

  344. as they could

  345. tell.

  346. And she reflected

  347. later,

  348. there are times

  349. I couldn't figure

  350. out any

  351. reason for the

  352. treatment I was

  353. getting from my

  354. great shepherd

  355. whom I trusted.

  356. And like

  357. these sheep,

  358. I didn't have

  359. a hint

  360. of explanation.

  361. All God's

  362. sheep have

  363. our faith

  364. tested.

  365. It can feel

  366. like God

  367. is trying

  368. to kill

  369. you,

  370. not bless

  371. you.

  372. He's asking

  373. you to lose

  374. your meaning

  375. while you get

  376. up in the

  377. morning.

  378. He's asking

  379. you to lose

  380. your future,

  381. your sense

  382. of safety,

  383. your purpose.

  384. To trust

  385. that God

  386. himself and

  387. not what he

  388. gives us

  389. is to be

  390. all our

  391. life.

  392. God does

  393. that to all

  394. his children.

  395. He tests

  396. our faith.

  397. He is to

  398. be our

  399. whole world.

  400. God is

  401. more interested

  402. in our

  403. happiness.

  404. We have

  405. to come

  406. to terms

  407. with the

  408. fact that

  409. God is

  410. more interested

  411. in our

  412. holiness than

  413. in our

  414. happiness right

  415. now.

  416. He's more

  417. interested in

  418. our faithfulness

  419. than in our

  420. financial resources.

  421. He's more

  422. interested in

  423. our purity

  424. than in our

  425. power.

  426. He's more

  427. interested in

  428. our eternal

  429. life than

  430. in our

  431. external wealth.

  432. He's more

  433. interested in

  434. our endurance

  435. than in our

  436. reputation.

  437. God is

  438. asking Abraham

  439. to offer up

  440. all to

  441. him.

  442. Now,

  443. what's more

  444. amazing than

  445. what God

  446. asks of

  447. Abraham is

  448. Abraham's

  449. response in

  450. verses 3

  451. to 10.

  452. We're not

  453. told Abraham's

  454. thoughts.

  455. Our attention

  456. is drawn to

  457. his incredible

  458. obedience.

  459. Verse 3,

  460. he rose up

  461. early.

  462. He didn't

  463. hesitate.

  464. He cut

  465. the wood.

  466. I just

  467. wonder,

  468. what is

  469. going through

  470. his head

  471. knowing what

  472. this wood

  473. is going to

  474. be used

  475. for?

  476. It's a

  477. three-day

  478. journey,

  479. 70

  480. kilometres,

  481. people think.

  482. This wasn't

  483. just a quick,

  484. okay, I'm just

  485. going to get

  486. this obedience

  487. over and

  488. done with.

  489. This requires

  490. sustained

  491. obedience.

  492. And the

  493. closer he got,

  494. the harder

  495. the obedience.

  496. obedience.

  497. How hard would

  498. it have been

  499. when his son

  500. says,

  501. Daddy,

  502. where's the

  503. lamb?

  504. That must have

  505. been hard to

  506. keep going.

  507. What was

  508. motivating

  509. Abraham to

  510. obey?

  511. Was it

  512. unquestioning

  513. obedience

  514. despite how

  515. crazy it

  516. seemed?

  517. I think

  518. that would

  519. be a

  520. dangerous

  521. lesson for

  522. us to

  523. take away.

  524. If you

  525. feel like

  526. God is

  527. telling you

  528. to do

  529. something,

  530. regardless

  531. of what

  532. he has

  533. revealed,

  534. that can't

  535. be the

  536. lesson for

  537. us to

  538. take away.

  539. I think

  540. there's more

  541. hints to

  542. what's

  543. motivating

  544. him here.

  545. By the

  546. time we

  547. get to

  548. the

  549. Passover

  550. at

  551. Exodus,

  552. God's

  553. judgment

  554. of the

  555. firstborn,

  556. remember?

  557. The

  558. identity

  559. and the

  560. future of

  561. every family

  562. was in

  563. the

  564. firstborn.

  565. It

  566. would

  567. have

  568. hit

  569. Israel's

  570. families

  571. too.

  572. God

  573. would

  574. have

  575. been

  576. just

  577. to

  578. call

  579. in a

  580. debt

  581. of

  582. sin

  583. except

  584. for the

  585. provision

  586. of the

  587. blood

  588. of the

  589. lamb.

  590. In

  591. Micah 6

    Micah 6:7

  592. verse 7

  593. the prophet

  594. asks,

  595. shall I

  596. give my

  597. firstborn

  598. for my

  599. transgression,

  600. the fruit

  601. of my

  602. body for

  603. the sin

  604. of my

  605. soul?

  606. It

  607. could be,

  608. I'm not

  609. sure if,

  610. I might be

  611. inappropriately

  612. reading back

  613. into Genesis,

  614. okay,

  615. but it

  616. could be

  617. that Abraham

  618. knows God

  619. has every

  620. right to

  621. call in

  622. his debt

  623. of sin.

  624. But I

  625. think we're

  626. given more

  627. hints,

  628. more clear

  629. hints here

  630. of what's

  631. going through

  632. Abraham's

  633. mind.

  634. I don't

  635. think we're

  636. shown the

  637. willpower to

  638. obey,

  639. I'm just

  640. going to

  641. obey no

  642. matter,

  643. it seems

  644. to go

  645. against

  646. God's

  647. revealed

  648. will.

  649. We're

  650. not

  651. shown that

  652. it seems

  653. a sense

  654. of guilt.

  655. His

  656. obedience

  657. is empowered

  658. by faith

  659. in his

  660. promise.

  661. I think

  662. we get

  663. that hint

  664. in verse

  665. 5.

  666. Then Abraham

  667. said to

  668. his young

  669. man,

  670. stay here

  671. with the

  672. donkey,

  673. I and

  674. the boy

  675. will go

  676. over there

  677. and worship

  678. and come

  679. again to

  680. you.

  681. Now that's

  682. in the

  683. plural,

  684. we will

  685. come again

  686. to you.

  687. I don't

  688. think he

  689. was lying,

  690. lying.

  691. I think

  692. that would

  693. detract from

  694. the picture

  695. of obedience

  696. if he's

  697. lying here.

  698. As the

  699. command of

  700. God and

  701. the promise

  702. of God

  703. seem to

  704. be in

  705. conflict,

  706. I think

  707. he's

  708. drawing

  709. deeply

  710. on God's

  711. promise.

  712. Through

  713. Isaac

  714. shall

  715. your

  716. offspring

  717. be

  718. named.

  719. And

  720. Hebrews

  721. 11

  722. confirms

  723. this for

  724. us.

  725. Hebrews

  726. 11

  727. says,

  728. he

  729. considered

  730. that God

  731. was able

  732. even to

  733. raise him

  734. from the

  735. dead.

  736. He's

  737. already

  738. seen God

  739. raised from

  740. the dead,

  741. a kind

  742. of raised

  743. from the

  744. dead.

  745. Remember

  746. that he

  747. and Sarah

  748. were as

  749. good as

  750. dead.

  751. Now

  752. that's not

  753. my wording,

  754. that's

  755. scripture's

  756. wording.

  757. He was

  758. as good

  759. as dead

  760. when Isaac

  761. was born.

  762. His

  763. faith grew

  764. strong in

  765. the promise.

  766. He knows

  767. nothing is

  768. too

  769. impossible

  770. for God.

  771. The logic

  772. is sound.

  773. He's

  774. telling me

  775. to offer

  776. up my

  777. only son

  778. my whole

  779. life,

  780. but he's

  781. promised my

  782. only son

  783. will inherit

  784. all God's

  785. everlasting

  786. promise.

  787. He must

  788. be able to

  789. raise him

  790. from the

  791. dead.

  792. He's

  793. drawing

  794. deeply

  795. on God's

  796. promise.

  797. That's

  798. what's

  799. empowering

  800. his faith.

  801. That's

  802. what's

  803. sending

  804. him up

  805. the

  806. mountain,

  807. the

  808. promise.

  809. Isaac

  810. asks,

  811. where is

  812. the

  813. lamb?

  814. Again,

  815. I don't

  816. think he's

  817. lying when

  818. he says,

  819. the Lord

  820. will provide.

  821. I can't

  822. see the

  823. lamb.

  824. The word

  825. provide is

  826. see.

  827. God will

  828. see to it.

  829. I can't

  830. see the

  831. lamb,

  832. my son.

  833. I can't

  834. see it.

  835. I have

  836. no idea

  837. how God's

  838. going to

  839. provide here.

  840. I know

  841. God has

  842. every right

  843. to call

  844. in my

  845. debt of

  846. sin,

  847. but he's

  848. promised

  849. you will

  850. inherit

  851. all.

  852. I don't

  853. know,

  854. I don't

  855. know how,

  856. I don't

  857. know when,

  858. but I

  859. know God

  860. will provide

  861. for himself

  862. so that

  863. you will

  864. live.

  865. He's

  866. drawing on

  867. the promise.

  868. In

  869. verses 9

  870. and 10,

  871. the narrative

  872. slows right

  873. down.

  874. He builds

  875. the altar.

  876. He binds

  877. Isaac.

  878. We're not

  879. told,

  880. we're not

  881. told,

  882. did Isaac

  883. resist or

  884. did he obey

  885. as well in

  886. trust?

  887. We're not

  888. told.

  889. He takes

  890. the knife

  891. in his

  892. hand.

  893. And the

  894. Lord intervenes.

  895. Abraham,

  896. Abraham.

  897. And he

  898. said,

  899. here I

  900. am.

  901. And he

  902. said,

  903. do not

  904. lay your

  905. hand on

  906. the boy

  907. or do

  908. anything

  909. to him.

  910. For now

  911. I know,

  912. I know

  913. that you

  914. fear God,

  915. seeing you

  916. have not

  917. withheld

  918. your son,

  919. your only

  920. son from

  921. me.

  922. He

  923. showed he

  924. loved God,

  925. God for

  926. God's

  927. sake.

  928. He

  929. trusted God's

  930. promise despite

  931. not knowing

  932. how God

  933. would provide.

  934. But he

  935. provided in a

  936. better way than

  937. he anticipated.

  938. He thought,

  939. oh well,

  940. he can raise

  941. Isaac from

  942. the dead.

  943. He provided

  944. in an even

  945. more wonderful

  946. way.

  947. A

  948. substitute to

  949. die in

  950. Isaac's

  951. place.

  952. This is the

  953. mountain which

  954. became the

  955. site for the

  956. temple.

  957. That would

  958. be a

  959. constant

  960. reminder.

  961. The Lord

  962. provides for

  963. himself the

  964. sacrifice.

  965. The Lord

  966. provides.

  967. It was

  968. Abraham's

  969. faith that

  970. the Lord

  971. would graciously

  972. provide,

  973. even doing

  974. the impossible,

  975. that empowered

  976. him to

  977. sacrifice without

  978. reservation.

  979. whatever

  980. trials the

  981. Lord brings

  982. your way,

  983. it may

  984. feel like

  985. your shepherd

  986. is trying

  987. to drown

  988. you.

  989. But nothing

  990. demonstrates that

  991. God himself is

  992. worthy of your

  993. trust,

  994. God himself is

  995. to be valued

  996. and is more

  997. precious than

  998. the gifts he

  999. gives.

  1000. Nothing

  1001. demonstrates that

  1002. God's word is

  1003. absolutely

  1004. trustworthy,

  1005. despite you have

  1006. no idea what

  1007. he is doing.

  1008. You can't see how

  1009. he will provide.

  1010. How is this doing

  1011. any good?

  1012. God,

  1013. and yet you

  1014. rejoice in

  1015. hope.

  1016. You love him

  1017. still.

  1018. You draw on

  1019. his promises.

  1020. The obedience

  1021. that comes from

  1022. faith, it

  1023. glorifies God.

  1024. It shows that

  1025. God is

  1026. trustworthy and

  1027. precious to

  1028. you.

  1029. Well, all

  1030. believers can

  1031. relate to some

  1032. degree we can

  1033. relate to the

  1034. testing of our

  1035. faith, but I

  1036. think the primary

  1037. purpose of this

  1038. passage isn't

  1039. about our

  1040. faith at all.

  1041. We see the

  1042. primary purpose

  1043. in verses 15

  1044. to 18, when

  1045. the angel

  1046. speaks, this

  1047. angel of the

  1048. Lord speaks for

  1049. a second time.

  1050. The angel of

  1051. the Lord

  1052. called to

  1053. Abraham a

  1054. second time

  1055. from heaven

  1056. and said,

  1057. By myself

  1058. I have

  1059. sworn,

  1060. declares the

  1061. Lord, because

  1062. you have done

  1063. this and have

  1064. not withheld

  1065. your son, your

  1066. only son, I

  1067. will surely

  1068. bless you and

  1069. I will surely

  1070. multiply your

  1071. offspring as

  1072. the stars of

  1073. heaven and as

  1074. the sand is on

  1075. a seashore.

  1076. And your

  1077. offspring shall

  1078. possess the

  1079. gate of his

  1080. enemies.

  1081. And in your

  1082. offspring shall

  1083. all the nations

  1084. of the earth be

  1085. blessed because

  1086. you have obeyed

  1087. my voice.

  1088. The only

  1089. addition to

  1090. the promises

  1091. that we see

  1092. here from

  1093. previous passages

  1094. is that your

  1095. offspring shall

  1096. possess the

  1097. gate of his

  1098. enemies.

  1099. His here is

  1100. singular.

  1101. It may be what

  1102. the Apostle Paul

  1103. saw as evidence

  1104. that the blessing

  1105. of Abraham was

  1106. promised not to

  1107. many seeds but

  1108. to one, one

  1109. seed he says

  1110. in Galatians.

  1111. He promises

  1112. victory for

  1113. God's chosen

  1114. seed.

  1115. Now certainly

  1116. that is providing

  1117. the land, the

  1118. conquest of the

  1119. land.

  1120. He will provide

  1121. victory there but

  1122. maybe that promise

  1123. gets expanded.

  1124. Psalm 2, God's

  1125. chosen one is

  1126. going to possess

  1127. the whole earth

  1128. and by the

  1129. time we get

  1130. to the New

  1131. Testament that

  1132. victory is over

  1133. spiritual enemies.

  1134. It's over every

  1135. single enemy that

  1136. goes against the

  1137. promises of God

  1138. to bless.

  1139. What we have in

  1140. these verses is

  1141. Yahweh swearing

  1142. the oath of

  1143. the covenant.

  1144. covenant.

  1145. The covenant in

  1146. chapter 15, God

  1147. promises descendants

  1148. and land but

  1149. what of the

  1150. promises to

  1151. bless the whole

  1152. earth?

  1153. It is at this

  1154. pivotal moment in

  1155. human history, of

  1156. salvation history,

  1157. that God's blessing

  1158. to the nations is

  1159. locked in.

  1160. Yahweh has

  1161. sworn.

  1162. He is sworn by

  1163. the highest

  1164. authority which

  1165. nothing can alter

  1166. himself.

  1167. Hebrews 6 says

  1168. this, so when God

  1169. desired to show more

  1170. convincingly to the

  1171. heirs of the

  1172. promise the

  1173. unchangeable character

  1174. of his purpose, he

  1175. guaranteed it with an

  1176. oath.

  1177. He's locking in on

  1178. blessing the whole

  1179. world.

  1180. Because you have

  1181. done this.

  1182. Because you have

  1183. not withheld your

  1184. son, your only son,

  1185. because you obeyed

  1186. my voice.

  1187. Now, we get

  1188. uncomfortable.

  1189. Oh, does that

  1190. mean the blessing

  1191. is dependent on our

  1192. obedience?

  1193. It's not about us.

  1194. I don't think this

  1195. passage is about us.

  1196. Remember who

  1197. Abraham is.

  1198. He's a

  1199. representative man.

  1200. He's the head of

  1201. all the people he

  1202. represents.

  1203. It's because of this

  1204. one man's obedience

  1205. that the blessing of

  1206. Yahweh will extend

  1207. far, far, far

  1208. beyond this one

  1209. man.

  1210. I think he's

  1211. like Adam,

  1212. the head of

  1213. humanity.

  1214. He was tested.

  1215. Obey me

  1216. and you will

  1217. live.

  1218. And he

  1219. disobeyed and he

  1220. plunged us all into

  1221. sin and curse.

  1222. Abraham's test was

  1223. greater.

  1224. Obey me

  1225. and you will die.

  1226. All your life

  1227. bound up with

  1228. Isaac, you will

  1229. die.

  1230. This one man's

  1231. great obedience

  1232. and the Lord

  1233. swears to bless

  1234. all the earth.

  1235. death.

1236. So I want to come

  1237. back to that

  1238. original question.

  1239. Why does

  1240. Yahweh ask such a

  1241. troubling test of

  1242. Abraham's obedience?

  1243. The only way I

  1244. can make sense of

  1245. why Yahweh would

  1246. make this disturbing

  1247. command is if

  1248. Abraham's testing is

  1249. like the first

  1250. pencil sketch of

  1251. a great artist.

  1252. Abraham's faith is

  1253. incredible in his

  1254. own right but it

  1255. was never meant to

  1256. be just a sketch.

  1257. You can't fully

  1258. understand it as a

  1259. sketch.

  1260. The finished

  1261. painting far

  1262. surpasses it.

  1263. It's here at this

  1264. pivotal moment in

  1265. God's salvation plan

  1266. for the world where

  1267. God is binding

  1268. himself with an

  1269. oath and what are

  1270. we finding?

  1271. We're finding a

  1272. father doing the

  1273. unthinkable, not

  1274. withholding his

  1275. son.

  1276. We find a lamb

  1277. provided by heaven

  1278. as a substitute.

1279. We find one man who

  1280. was tested, obey

  1281. me and you will

  1282. die and by his

  1283. one obedience he's

  1284. bringing blessing to

  1285. the entire world.

  1286. It's Jesus at the

  1287. cross who is the

  1288. finished painting.

  1289. He's the true and

  1290. greater Abraham, he's

  1291. the true and greater

  1292. lamb, he's the true

  1293. and greater son.

1294. God only asked this of

  1295. Abraham because he

  1296. knew only Yahweh

  1297. himself would ever be

  1298. asked to follow

  1299. through with this.

  1300. It's not child abuse.

  1301. It's not bullying.

  1302. Abraham taking the

  1303. wood and placing it

1304. on Isaac to carry it

  1305. up that mountain.

  1306. It's a sketch so

1307. that when we see God's

  1308. only son carrying the

  1309. cross, we marvel.

  1310. As Abraham and Isaac

  1311. walked up together, the

  1312. Godhead is absolutely

  1313. united.

  1314. The Father did not

  1315. compel Jesus.

  1316. He wasn't an unwilling

  1317. victim.

  1318. Nor was Jesus offering

  1319. up himself, trying to

  1320. get from God, the

  1321. Father, some blessing

  1322. because God is unwilling

  1323. to forgive.

  1324. They are totally united

  1325. in this.

  1326. From the very beginning

  1327. of human history, this

1328. was always God's plan to

  1329. restore blessing to the

  1330. entire world.

  1331. God's plan to

  1332. be able to

  1333. be able to

  1334. be able to

  1335. be able to

  1336. We all sometimes

  1337. feel like our

  1338. shepherd is trying to

  1339. drown us.

  1340. How can God be

  1341. asking this of me?

1342. But the true child of

  1343. God also knows a

  1344. different experience.

  1345. And it's the same

  1346. faith of Abraham.

  1347. We find God worthy

  1348. of our trust.

  1349. We stop objecting.

1350. How can you ask this

  1351. of me?

  1352. Because when we see

  1353. the God of Abraham

  1354. offering up his only

1355. son, with no one in

  1356. heaven or on earth

  1357. ready to intervene,

1358. to stop it, we can

  1359. look at the cross

1360. and we go, now I

  1361. know.

  1362. Now I know you

  1363. love me.

  1364. Now I know you

  1365. love us because you

  1366. did not give, withhold

  1367. your son, your only

  1368. son, whom you love.

1369. Will you pray with me?

  1370. Let's pray.

  1371. Father, I pray that

  1372. you would press into

  1373. each of our hearts

  1374. and minds just the

  1375. wonder of your love

  1376. for us in sending

  1377. your son.

  1378. We can't imagine how

  1379. hard it was for

  1380. Abraham to not

  1381. withhold his only

  1382. son.

  1383. Please help us to

  1384. grasp how great your

  1385. love is for us.

  1386. Nothing else, nothing

  1387. else is strong enough

1388. to help us trust you

  1389. and obey you and

  1390. love you still when

  1391. times are tough.

  1392. Help us feel that

  1393. love.

  1394. It's not enough for

1395. us just to think it.

  1396. Please help us feel

1397. it so that we would

  1398. show this world and

  1399. hope that we have

  1400. that your love is

  1401. better than life.

  1402. Lord, I pray this

  1403. because I know it

  1404. glorifies you.

1405. So in Jesus' name I

  1406. ask.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Amen.

  1409. Thank you.
