  1. Psalm 8 is our reading this morning.

  2. Psalm 8.

  3. O Lord, our Lord,

  4. how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  5. You have set your glory above the heavens,

  6. out of the mouth of babes, babies and infants.

  7. You have established strength because of your foes

  8. to still the enemy and the avenger.

  9. When I look at your heavens,

  10. the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,

  11. which you have set in place,

  12. what is man that you are mindful of him

  13. and the son of man that you care for him?

  14. Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings

  15. and crowned him with glory and honour.

  16. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands.

  17. You have put all things under his feet,

  18. all sheep and oxen and also the beasts of the field,

  19. the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,

  20. whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

  21. O Lord, our Lord,

  22. how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  23. Amen.

  24. Amen.

  25. Well, good morning, everyone.

  26. If you're visiting with us this morning,

  27. my name's David.

  28. I'm one of the pastors here.

  29. It's great to have you here this morning.

  30. Well, having just given thanks for and prayed

  31. for these little human beings,

  32. if next Sunday we got everyone to bring in their pet puppy

  33. and we did the same thing,

  34. we got them on stage

  35. and we thanked God for our pet puppies

  36. and prayed for them,

  37. would you find that appropriate?

  38. We love our puppies, right?

  39. We name our puppies.

  40. We give them names.

  41. We dress them,

  42. or some people do at least.

  43. We send them to puppy school.

  44. We order puppy chinos at the cafe.

  45. We get pet insurance.

  46. We let them sleep in our bed and cuddle them.

  47. Some even call them their children.

  48. And yet, intuitively,

  49. I'm guessing all of us would think

  50. having a puppy Thanksgiving and prayer service

  51. service is out of place.

  52. And anyone who took it seriously,

  53. I don't know how to be politically correct

  54. and finish that sentence.

  55. But only human beings can ask the sort of questions

  56. we find in Psalm 8

  57. and contemplate the universe like Psalm 8,

  58. what we've heard read.

  59. What is my place in this universe?

  60. Human beings,

  61. we all ask that question.

  62. There's something very different to human beings

  63. than puppies.

  64. What is my life about?

  65. What is a human life about?

  66. Where do I find value and purpose?

  67. Asking those questions

  68. and trying to find our value and purpose

  69. in this great universe,

  70. can I suggest is what a human being does.

  71. We can't help it.

  72. Can I suggest that's worship?

  73. Now, I know I'm introducing a religious term there,

  74. but it's not just when we gather like this

  75. that we worship.

  76. Worship is not a religious thing only.

  77. It's a human thing.

  78. We can't help it.

  79. We all do it.

  80. Because if you look in this universe and go,

  81. what is important?

  82. What am I going to base my life on?

  83. What am I going to fill my mind and heart with?

  84. What gives me purpose and value?

  85. You're worshipping that thing,

  86. whatever it is.

  87. It's not a religious thing only.

  88. It's a human thing to worship.

  89. Here's a non-Christian who says that very thing.

  90. David Wallace at a graduation speech at a university said,

  91. there's no such thing as not worshipping.

  92. Everybody worships.

  93. The only choice we get is what to worship.

  94. If you worship money and things,

  95. then you'll never have enough.

  96. Never feel you have enough.

  97. He kept saying,

  98. worship your body and beauty,

  99. and you'll always feel ugly.

  100. And when time and age start showing,

  101. you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you.

  102. You worship power.

  103. You'll end up feeling weak and afraid.

  104. And you'll need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear.

  105. If you worship your intellect,

  106. being seen as smart,

  107. you'll end up feeling stupid,

  108. a fraud,

  109. always on the verge of being found out.

  110. That was his conclusion.

  111. He's saying,

  112. we all worship.

  113. That's just a human thing.

  114. What's important in life?

  115. Why am I important?

  116. We all do it.

  117. The only choice we get is

  118. what we look to,

  119. what we worship,

  120. what we centre our lives on.

  121. In Psalm 8,

  122. we find a human being

  123. contemplating the universe,

  124. and we find him overwhelmed

  125. at someone great,

  126. and he's overwhelmed at his place

  127. in this incredible universe.

  128. My father-in-law, Clay,

  129. I know anyone who comes to this church

  130. knows who he is,

  131. but for those visiting,

  132. he's stuck stars

  133. on Sam and Rory's bedroom ceiling,

  134. and it's the constellations

  135. that we would see

  136. from our vantage point here in Australia.

  137. And he's gone to great effort

  138. to get the precise ratios of the distance.

  139. Anyone who knows Clay knows why.

  140. He's ordered it so beautifully

  141. on the kid's ceiling.

  142. My dad, Gary,

  143. always loves to go back

  144. to the country sky in Townworth

  145. because his telescope is there.

  146. He wants to be in the cold night air

  147. just staring up at the sky.

  148. He gets up in crazy hours

  149. in the middle of the night

  150. to go take pictures of Aurora Borealis.

  151. What makes these grown men

  152. act like children?

  153. Obsessed with the night?

  154. What's going on?

  155. Well, they're in good company.

  156. King David,

  157. who wrote this psalm,

  158. this song,

  159. is doing the exact same thing.

  160. He's looking at the stars going,

  161. you have set your glory above the heavens.

  162. He's just looking at this universe

  163. and he's overwhelmed.

  164. The light from the sun

  165. takes only eight minutes to get to earth,

  166. but the nearest star in the southern cross,

  167. nearest star to us,

  168. takes 90 years.

  169. Now, the vastness of the universe,

  170. you cannot fit in your head.

  171. No one can.

  172. It's too mind-boggling.

  173. There's billions of stars and galaxies

  174. behind billions of stars and galaxies.

  175. Now, if the universe was made

  176. just for our home

  177. and our dwelling as human beings,

  178. it's a bit excessive.

  179. It's a bit...

  180. Couldn't you just make the solar system

  181. and that's...

  182. Even then,

  183. probably didn't even need that.

  184. But,

  185. if the universe was made

  186. so that with David,

  187. we can be like children

  188. and just look up at the stars

  189. and go,

  190. wow,

  191. God,

  192. creator,

  193. the grandeur

  194. overwhelms me.

  195. Then the universe is a pretty good size

  196. for us to look up

  197. and see just how amazing God is.

  198. you are the greatest.

  199. Majestic is your name.

  200. The work of your fingers.

  201. It's not his arm

  202. as if it took a lot of strength.

  203. He created it all with his fingers.

  204. It's just...

  205. He's that powerful.

  206. He's like an artist with care.

  207. He's declaring from the depths of his heart,

  208. when I look at this universe,

  209. it is impossible to add to your greatness, God.

  210. When we sing,

  211. we are not adding to God's greatness.

  212. We can't add anything.

  213. We're enjoying.

  214. We're just enjoying his greatness.

  215. That's what we're doing.

  216. Your glory is above the heavens.

  217. Your greatness is above the heavens.

  218. And then verse 2,

  219. it seems a bit odd.

  220. Out of the mouth of babies and infants,

  221. you have established strength or praise

  222. because of your enemies.

  223. What is that doing there?

  224. I think what David is saying is,

  225. okay, it's impossible to add to God's greatness,

  226. but it's also impossible for you and me

  227. to take away from God's greatness.

  228. Enemies,

  229. many people,

  230. in the name of science,

  231. make unscientific spiritual claims,

  232. spiritual claims,

  233. trying to remove God from this world,

  234. from our minds,

  235. from society.

  236. Others, with their words,

  237. try and redefine God

  238. as this impersonal,

  239. I don't know,

  240. force,

  241. like in Star Wars.

  242. You've just got to connect in

  243. and just,

  244. you don't have to listen to God's words.

  245. Others try and make themselves

  246. the master of their life

  247. and sing with Frank Sinatra,

  248. I did it my way.

  249. But then there's

  250. religious people who,

  251. false religion,

  252. not true religion,

  253. but false religion,

  254. who

  255. come to church,

  256. but in their heart,

  257. they're using God to get

  258. X,

  259. whatever X is.

  260. I will pray to you to get X,

  261. I will go to church to get

  262. whatever it is,

  263. health,

  264. the benefit of my children even.

  265. Whatever X is,

  266. is your real God,

  267. if you're using God

  268. to some other end.

  269. false religion,

  270. tells God,

  271. this is what you should be like.

  272. You should be doing this in the world.

  273. You should be doing this in my life.

  274. False religion

  275. claims to believe in God

  276. and goes,

  277. no,

  278. this part of my life is mine.

  279. Don't touch it,

  280. God.

  281. When you look at this universe,

  282. you don't have a,

  283. you don't ask the God of the universe

  284. to come in and be your advisor in life.

  285. You don't come and say,

  286. hey,

  287. can you counsel me in this situation?

  288. God's not your personal assistant.

  289. When you look at the universe,

  290. we are made for him.

  291. All these attempts,

  292. there's non-religious attempts,

  293. there's religious attempts

  294. to try and rob God

  295. of his place in the universe

  296. and in our hearts.

  297. Now,

  298. what's God going to do about that?

  299. How is he going to restore his honour?

  300. Is he going to send angels?

  301. Is he going to send armies?

  302. Nope.

  303. He's happy with children.

  304. He is going to silence his enemies

  305. with what we heard this morning,

  306. the children singing,

  307. my God is so big,

  308. so strong and so mighty.

  309. There's nothing my God cannot do.

  310. That's true.

  311. God uses the weak.

  312. Those little children

  313. are one day going to be proven

  314. to be right.

  315. They're in the position of strength.

  316. They know what's going on in the universe.

  317. With ease,

  318. God created the universe.

  319. With ease,

  320. he's going to silence his enemies.

  321. He's happy with children.

  322. Praising him.

  323. That's all he needs.

  324. It's impossible

  325. to add to God's greatness.

  326. It is impossible

  327. to take away

  328. from his greatness.

  329. And David,

  330. contemplating

  331. the universe,

  332. asks a question

  333. I think we all ask

  334. in verses 3 to 4.

  335. When I look at your heavens,

  336. the work of your fingers,

  337. the moon and the stars

  338. which you have set in place,

  339. what is mankind,

  340. what is man

  341. that you're mindful of him

  342. and the son of man

  343. that you care for him.

  344. Only human beings

  345. ask this question.

  346. What is my place

  347. in this vast universe?

  348. And it's a scary question.

  349. does the universe care?

  350. Now those who want to find

  351. their meaning

  352. without reference to God,

  353. here's the kind of conclusion

  354. you need to draw.

  355. Here's Stephen

  356. Jay Gould.

  357. He's an evolutionary biologist.

  358. We're here simply because

  359. one odd group of fish

  360. had a peculiar anatomy

  361. that just happened

  362. to be able to transform

  363. itself into legs

  364. for terrestrial preachers.

  365. We're here just because

  366. comets struck the earth

  367. and wiped out dinosaurs

  368. and gave mammals a chance.

  369. We're here just for those reasons.

  370. We yearn for a higher answer

  371. but none exists.

  372. Now this explanation,

  373. though superficially troubling,

  374. if not terrifying,

  375. is ultimately liberating.

  376. We have to construct

  377. any meaning ourselves.

  378. Any sense of human dignity,

  379. any sense of human rights,

  380. they're just feelings

  381. that it helped our ancestors

  382. to evolve.

  383. It's not actually real.

  384. Today you'll go into

  385. a psychology session

  386. and the problems

  387. in your life

  388. is because of low self-worth

  389. and then you'll go

  390. to a science class

  391. and say,

  392. well, you're actually

  393. nothing special.

  394. You're just evolved fish

  395. and when the universe

  396. runs out,

  397. no one will remember

  398. anything that you do.

  399. There's a play

  400. by Samuel Beckett

  401. called Breath

  402. and it lasts for 35 seconds

  403. and you go in

  404. and it's dark

  405. and the lights

  406. slowly come on

  407. as you hear

  408. whoosh

  409. and the lights dim

  410. as you hear

  411. whoosh

  412. and that's the end

  413. of the play.

  414. That's life.

  415. If there's no God,

  416. what's my place

  417. in this universe?

  418. Well,

  419. we're surrounded

  420. by the culture

  421. that's saying

  422. you don't have a place

  423. in the universe.

  424. Your universe

  425. doesn't care about you.

  426. Now,

  427. even if you believe

  428. in God,

  429. it's a frightening question.

  430. If we start

  431. to get our head

  432. around who God is,

  433. his greatness,

  434. why would he care

  435. about little me?

  436. I'm so finite

  437. and fragile

  438. and limited

  439. before this unlimited God.

  440. I'm here today

  441. and gone tomorrow

  442. before this everlasting God.

  443. Does he care about me?

  444. What's our place

  445. in this universe?

  446. And there's two

  447. amazing answers

  448. that Psalm 8 gives us.

  449. The first is

  450. we are created

  451. to rule

  452. God's world

  453. as his representatives.

  454. David uses two names

  455. for God in this psalm.

  456. O Lord,

  457. our Lord.

  458. The first one,

  459. Sovereign Lord.

  460. He's all-powerful.

  461. We've already covered that.

  462. But then

  463. he's saying

  464. Yahweh,

  465. the personal name

  466. of God.

  467. He's saying

  468. our Lord.

  469. He's speaking

  470. to this God.

  471. He's not this

  472. distant being.

  473. God has created

  474. us to know him.

  475. Personal relationship.

  476. And then David

  477. recalls God's

  478. original design

  479. in Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  480. of our purpose

  481. as human beings

  482. which launches him

  483. into even more

  484. worship of God.

  485. If we just hear

  486. the verbs,

  487. you have crowned him.

  488. You have crowned

  489. mankind

  490. with glory

  491. and honour.

  492. You have given him

  493. dominion,

  494. rule.

  495. God's entrusted

  496. the work of his hands

  497. to you and me.

  498. you have put

  499. all things

  500. under his feet.

  501. Now these

  502. terms are usually

  503. reserved for God.

  504. Glory,

  505. honour,

  506. dominion,

  507. crown.

  508. He's talking about

  509. human beings.

  510. Why has God

  511. created us

  512. like him

  513. to represent him,

  514. to rule the world

  515. and show his

  516. goodness,

  517. his patience,

  518. his justice,

  519. his forgiveness,

  520. his care

  521. in all we do,

  522. in all our

  523. interactions.

  524. He's put us here

  525. to represent God.

  526. God.

  527. We're here to know

  528. this God

  529. and enjoy him

  530. and we're here

  531. to represent him

  532. in all we say

  533. and do.

  534. Even changing

  535. a nappy,

  536. you can represent,

  537. you're representing

  538. God.

  539. It's a beautiful

  540. picture.

  541. The God of the

  542. universe

  543. cares.

  544. He's crowned us

  545. with glory

  546. and honour.

  547. Now,

  548. this sounds good

  549. in theory,

  550. but is it

  551. our daily

  552. experience?

  553. Why is there

  554. such beauty

  555. in the world

  556. but also

  557. bombs?

  558. Do we see

  559. people treating

  560. each other

  561. as being

  562. crowned

  563. with glory

  564. and honour?

  565. Do the words

  566. coming out

  567. of my mouth

  568. and your mouth

  569. to other people

  570. treat human

  571. beings

  572. with such

  573. dignity?

  574. We were made

  575. to control

  576. the world

  577. under God

  578. and yet

  579. I can barely

  580. control myself.

  581. The man

  582. writing this,

  583. he failed

  584. big time.

  585. He did

  586. some awful

  587. things

  588. to human

  589. beings

  590. crowned

  591. in glory

  592. and honour.

  593. It's not

  594. our daily

  595. experience.

  596. So,

  597. by all

  598. means,

  599. if you're

  600. at the

  601. beach

  602. overlooking

  603. a sunset,

  604. use

  605. psalm,

  606. pray

  607. psalm,

  608. sing

  609. psalm.

  610. mate,

  611. it's

  612. fitting

  613. for that

  614. because how

  615. else are

  616. you going

  617. to describe

  618. what you're

  619. seeing?

  620. It's a

  621. beautiful

  622. word

  623. to praise

  624. God.

  625. But

  626. a bigger

  627. answer that

  628. psalm 8

  629. gives us

  630. is what

  631. God has

  632. done to

  633. restore us

  634. to glory

  635. and honour.

  636. our

  637. creator

  638. doesn't

  639. just

  640. look down

  641. and know

  642. us,

  643. he's

  644. come down

  645. as one

  646. of us.

  647. God

  648. had promised

  649. in the

  650. Bible

  651. another king

  652. like David

  653. who would

  654. save and

  655. put this

  656. world right.

  657. He would

  658. save us.

  659. God

  660. Jesus

  661. when he

  662. walked

  663. on earth

  664. he came

  665. into the

  666. capital

  667. city,

  668. David's

  669. capital

  670. city

  671. and he

  672. announced

  673. himself

  674. as the

  675. promised

  676. saviour,

  677. as the

  678. promised

  679. king.

  680. There

  681. was a

  682. parade

  683. like whoever

  684. wins the

  685. world cup

  686. I'm guessing

  687. there's going

  688. to be a

  689. great parade.

  690. This

  691. parade

  692. it would

  693. be more

  694. ecstatic.

  695. They were

  696. looking forward

  697. to this

  698. saviour for

  699. thousands

  700. of years.

  701. There was a

  702. parade

  703. and the

  704. children got

  705. caught up

  706. in the

  707. praise and

  708. just praising

  709. Jesus and

  710. the enemies

  711. of Jesus

  712. were like

  713. do you hear

  714. what they're

  715. saying?

  716. They're

  717. praising you.

  718. They should

  719. be praising

  720. God.

  721. That's

  722. blasphemy.

  723. Tell those

  724. kids to be

  725. quiet.

  726. And Jesus

  727. quotes Psalm

    Psalms 8:2

  728. 8 verse

  729. 2.

  730. Haven't

  731. you read

  732. out of the

  733. mouths of

  734. babies and

  735. infants?

  736. In other

  737. words, I'm

  738. the God of

  739. Psalm 8.

  740. It was my

  741. fingers that

  742. made the

  743. heavens.

  744. These little

  745. children are

  746. absolutely

  747. right to

  748. praise me.

  749. And just

  750. days later

  751. these enemies

  752. put him on

  753. a cross

  754. to silence

  755. him.

  756. Now their

  757. plan would

  758. have worked

  759. except for

  760. one thing.

  761. Whose hands

  762. these were

  763. that they

  764. were crucifying?

  765. Hands that

  766. touched the

  767. blind and

  768. they saw

  769. for the very

  770. first time.

  771. Hands that

  772. took a

  773. dead 12

  774. year old

  775. cold limp

  776. hand by the

  777. hand and

  778. raised her back

  779. to life and

  780. gave her back to

  781. her parents.

  782. Jesus'

  783. majesty is

  784. above the

  785. heavens.

  786. He showed

  787. himself as

  788. our creator.

  789. And so he

  790. rose to life

  791. on the third

  792. day.

  793. All

  794. authority in

  795. heaven and

  796. on earth is

  797. under Jesus'

  798. feet.

  799. Our creator

  800. came down and

  801. did that for

  802. us.

  803. God

  804. so all

  805. human beings,

  806. all of us

  807. ask the

  808. question,

  809. what is my

  810. place in the

  811. universe?

  812. You can only

  813. find an answer

  814. to that in

  815. Jesus.

  816. He didn't

  817. just look down

  818. from heaven,

  819. he came down.

  820. Even while

  821. we were

  822. putting our

  823. lives on

  824. everything except

  825. for him,

  826. even while we

  827. were using

  828. power to live

  829. for ourselves

  830. rather than

  831. represent him,

  832. even while we

  833. were mistreating

  834. the dignity

  835. of human

  836. beings,

  837. he came

  838. down.

  839. And those

  840. hands, those

  841. fingers,

  842. crucified for

  843. us, to

  844. rescue us, to

  845. restore us

  846. back to

  847. himself, back

  848. to the

  849. dignity to be

  850. crowned with

  851. glory and

  852. honour.

  853. We have

  854. lost every

  855. right for our

  856. creator to care

  857. about us and

  858. yet he did

  859. that.

  860. Does our

  861. creator, is

  862. he mindful of

  863. you and

  864. me?

  865. Well,

  866. that's how

  867. much you

  868. were in his

  869. mind, that he

  870. came down and

  871. died for you.

  872. psalm 8 leaves

  873. us with a

  874. choice.

  875. All human

  876. beings

  877. worship.

  878. We're all

  879. singing and

  880. living for

  881. something, trying

  882. to find our

  883. purpose in

  884. life somewhere.

  885. You can't

  886. help it, we

  887. can't help it.

  888. Our only choice

  889. is where

  890. are you going

  891. to find your

  892. purpose?

  893. Whose song

  894. are you going

  895. to sing?

  896. You can

  897. join the

  898. chorus of

  899. those who

  900. keep telling

  901. us there

  902. is no

  903. meaning in

  904. life, there

  905. is no

  906. God, who

  907. try and rob

  908. our creator

  909. of his

  910. greatness, who

  911. try and rob

  912. human beings

  913. of our purpose

  914. in the world,

  915. who try and

  916. rob themselves

  917. of the peace

  918. and wonder

  919. of knowing

  920. this God, who

  921. try and use

  922. God rather

  923. than being

  924. overwhelmed by

  925. his love and

  926. his greatness.

  927. You can join

  928. that chorus

  929. or you can

  930. join the

  931. chorus of

  932. children and

  933. just be weak,

  934. dependent,

  935. and just

  936. receive everything

  937. as a gift

  938. from Jesus.

  939. who has come

  940. and done

  941. everything to

  942. restore our

  943. place.

  944. He says when

  945. he comes to

  946. fix this world,

  947. it's going to

  948. be his children

  949. are going to

  950. rule.

  951. He's done all

  952. that for us.

  953. So whose song

  954. are you going

  955. to sing?

  956. To try and

  957. put my

  958. little kids

  959. to sleep

  960. at night,

  961. I always

  962. reach for

  963. the children's

  964. song.

  965. Jesus

  966. loves me,

  967. this I

  968. know,

  969. for the

  970. Bible tells

  971. me so.

  972. Little

  973. ones,

  974. sorry,

  975. I don't know

  976. why it's

  977. getting too

  978. big.

  979. Little

  980. ones to

  981. him belong,

  982. they are

  983. weak,

  984. but he

  985. is strong.

  986. Jesus

  987. loves me,

  988. he who

  989. died,

  990. heaven's

  991. gate,

  992. to open

  993. wide,

  994. he will

  995. wash away

  996. my sin,

  997. let his

  998. little

  999. children

  1000. come in.

  1001. So it's

  1002. up to you,

  1003. what song

  1004. are you going

  1005. to sing?

  1006. Will you pray

  1007. with me?

  1008. Let's pray.

  1009. Father, I'm

  1010. deeply aware my

  1011. words can't

  1012. capture your

  1013. greatness of

  1014. in creation or

  1015. what you've done

  1016. to save us,

  1017. but your

  1018. words can.

  1019. I just pray for

  1020. each one of

  1021. us, you

  1022. would press on

  1023. our hearts

  1024. just the

  1025. wonder of

  1026. who you

  1027. are and

  1028. that you

  1029. care enough

  1030. that you

  1031. came down

  1032. to rescue

  1033. us, that

  1034. you love

  1035. us that

  1036. much.

  1037. Fill us

  1038. with that

  1039. wonder so

  1040. that we

  1041. may know

  1042. you and

  1043. live for

  1044. you and

  1045. treat others

  1046. with the

  1047. respect that

  1048. you call

  1049. for.

  1050. I pray

  1051. this in

  1052. Jesus'

  1053. name.

  1054. Amen.
