  1. If you'd like to open your Bibles to Exodus 33.

  2. !

  3. See, you say to me, bring up this people, but you've not let me know whom you will send with me.

  4. Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you've also found favour in my sight.

  5. Now, therefore, if I have found favour in your sight, please show me now your ways that I may know you in order to find favour in your sight.

  6. Consider, too, that this nation is your people.

  7. And he said, my presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

  8. And he said to him, if your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.

  9. For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people?

  10. Is it not in you going with us so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?

  11. And the Lord said to Moses, this very thing that you have spoken, I will do.

  12. For you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name.

  13. Moses said, please show me your glory.

  14. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name, the Lord.

  15. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  16. But, he said, you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.

  17. And the Lord said, behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

  18. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.

  19. The Lord said to Moses, cut for yourself two tablets of stone, like the first, and I'll write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.

  20. Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain.

  21. No one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain.

  22. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite the mountain.

  23. So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first, and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him,

  24. and took in his hand two tablets of stone.

  25. The Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.

  26. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed,

  27. The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

  28. keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  29. but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquities of the fathers on the children,

  30. and the children's children to the third and fourth generation.

  31. And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshipped.

  32. And he said,

  33. If I now have found favour in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us,

  34. for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.

  35. This is God's word.

  36. Good morning, everyone.

  37. Good morning.

  38. Good morning.

  39. My computer is not coming to the party.

  40. There we go.

  41. It's all right.

  42. I'll make do.

  43. Please keep your Bibles open at Exodus chapters 32 to 34.

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  44. We're actually going to be looking at quite a few different Bible passages this morning,

  45. but most of the other ones will come up on the screen,

  46. but the Exodus part won't come up on the screen,

  47. and that's the section we'll be looking at most closely.

  48. How we treat the poor and the weak and the vulnerable reveals something about our hearts.

  49. It reveals the degree to which our hearts have been gripped by the love of God.

  50. That's a prominent theme in the Bible across both Testaments, Old and New Testament.

  51. So, for example, are our acts of worship genuine?

  52. Are our acts of worship genuine?

  53. Well, the people in Isaiah's day, the prophet Isaiah's day, were very religious.

  54. They offered all the sacrifices.

  55. They observed all the ceremonies.

  56. But here's what God said to them in Isaiah chapter 1.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  57. What to me, I think this will come up on the screen.

  58. Here we go.

  59. Yep, and we'll step through it.

  60. What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices, says the Lord.

  61. I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams and the fat of well-fed beasts.

  62. I do not delight in the blood of bulls or of lambs or of goats.

  63. When you come to appear before me, who is required of you this trampling of my courts?

  64. Bring no more vain offerings.

  65. Incense is an abomination to me.

  66. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations.

  67. I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.

  68. Your new moons and your appointed feasts, my soul hates.

  69. They've become a burden to me.

  70. I'm weary of bearing them.

  71. When you spread your hands, I'll hide my eyes from you.

  72. Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen.

  73. Your hands are full of blood.

  74. Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean.

  75. Remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes.

  76. Cease to do evil.

  77. Learn to do good.

  78. Seek justice.

  79. Correct oppression.

  80. Bring justice to the fatherless.

  81. Lead the widow's cause.

  82. I mean, God's language here is very strong.

  83. They had religion.

  84. But God says it was all meaningless.

  85. It was all empty.

  86. It was just a show.

  87. In fact, more than, worse than meaningless, it was offensive to God.

  88. Why?

  89. Because of the injustice of their lives.

  90. Because their hands were full of blood.

  91. Because they did not seek justice.

  92. Because they did not confront oppression or defend the orphans and widows in their midst.

  93. Religion, God says, without care for the vulnerable is just an empty show.

  94. What about our faith?

  95. Is our faith in God genuine?

  96. Well, listen to James, the brother of the Lord Jesus.

  97. In James chapter 2, he says,

    James 2 chapter mention

  98. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?

  99. Can that faith save him?

  100. If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food and one of you says to them,

  101. go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body,

  102. what good is that?

  103. So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

  104. Verses 15 and 16 there are not just a mere illustration.

  105. They're a case study.

  106. They're an example, James says, of the kinds of works that faith must produce if it's truly alive and not dead.

  107. Do we know God's love?

  108. Well, listen to the Apostle John in 1 John 3.

  109. 1 John 3,

  110. Little children, let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth.

  111. If we say we know God's love, if we truly have God's love abiding in us,

  112. then that must overflow in works of compassion and love towards others in need.

  113. Are we actually God's saved people?

  114. Well, in Jesus' parable in Matthew 25,

  115. the parable of the sheep and the goats,

  116. what differentiates the sheep from the goats are acts of mercy and kindness shown to Jesus' brothers, to his people.

  117. Do we give food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty?

  118. Do we welcome the stranger and clothe the naked?

  119. Do we visit the sick and help the prisoner?

  120. Do we see the poor and the vulnerable and the weak reveals whether or not we truly know God.

  121. Now, today and for the next two weeks,

  122. we're taking a little break from our series in Romans

  123. for a mini-sermon series on God's justice and mercy.

  124. Now, my plan for this series is really based around a single verse,

  125. which may be a familiar verse to you.

  126. It's Micah 6, verse 8.

    Micah 6:8

  127. Micah 6, verse 8 in context is one of those passages,

    Micah 6:8

  128. a bit like the ones that we just read,

  129. where the prophet is asking, or God is asking,

  130. what is genuine religion?

  131. What does God actually want from us?

  132. And this is how it reads, Micah 6, verse 8.

    Micah 6:8

  133. He has told you, O man, what is good.

  134. And what does the Lord require of you?

  135. But to do justice and to love kindness

  136. and to walk humbly with your God.

  137. What might it look like if we commit together,

  138. commit ourselves under God to doing justice

  139. and loving kindness with one another

  140. and in our wider community?

  141. What would it look like?

  142. Luke wrote of the early church, in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  143. he wrote of the early church that

  144. there was not a needy person among them.

  145. It's not that there were no needs in the early church,

  146. it's just that they gave sacrificially

  147. to meet one another's needs.

  148. Could we be so committed to justice and kindness

  149. that there would not be a needy person among us?

  150. Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?

  151. What difference might it make in Glendale

  152. and Newcastle and Lake Macquarie

  153. if in our neighbourhoods and our workplaces

  154. and our schools and our community groups,

  155. we carry with us that commitment

  156. to justice and kindness

  157. into every place God sends us

  158. from Monday to Saturday each week?

  159. Well, brothers and sisters,

  160. there's no doing justice and loving kindness

  161. without walking humbly with our God.

  162. And there's no walking humbly with our God

  163. without knowing our God.

  164. So the way I want us to approach this series

  165. is quite simple.

  166. In this first talk,

  167. we're going to reflect on the kindness of God.

  168. In the second talk,

  169. we're going to reflect on the justice of God,

  170. that is two sermons helping us know God.

  171. And in the third talk,

  172. we're going to think about doing justice

  173. and loving kindness,

  174. our response.

  175. My prayer is that this series

  176. will help us be ready individually

  177. and collectively

  178. for whatever works of justice and mercy

  179. God may put before us.

  180. In fact, why don't we pray that now?

  181. Heavenly Father,

  182. we do ask that as we meditate on your word today

  183. and in coming weeks,

  184. you would help us to know you deeply and truly,

  185. to know your justice and your kindness.

  186. And so,

  187. fill us with wonder at who you are,

  188. that that might overflow in our works of justice

  189. and kindness for others.

  190. In Jesus' name.

  191. Amen.

  192. Well, today we're going to reflect on the kindness of God.

  193. Now, there are many places in the Bible

  194. we could go to do this.

  195. For all who live after Christ,

  196. there is an obvious starting point.

  197. But I actually want us to start somewhere else.

  198. In the Old Testament,

  199. with a moment that was for Israel

  200. both pivotal and foundational.

  201. A moment when the Lord showed Moses

  202. who he truly is.

  203. In particular, showed Israel

  204. that it is God's glory

  205. that he is kind.

  206. Now, the key text is in Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:5–7

  207. verses 5 to 7.

  208. We've heard that already

  209. from Emma's kids' talk

  210. that she did a moment ago.

  211. To my mind,

  212. those verses that Emma covered

  213. in her kids' talk,

  214. that they are the high point

  215. of the entire book of Exodus.

  216. Now, that's a bold claim

  217. because the book of Exodus

  218. is full of seismic events.

  219. There's the burning bush

  220. where the Lord appeared to

  221. and spoke to Moses.

  222. There are the ten plagues

  223. that God sent on the land of Egypt,

  224. culminating in the Passover.

  225. There's the parting of the sea,

  226. the Red Sea,

  227. so that Israel could pass through

  228. on dry land.

  229. And then the sea came over

  230. and covered the armies

  231. of the Egyptians.

  232. There's the coming to Mount Sinai,

  233. the giving of the law,

  234. the Ten Commandments.

  235. There's the construction

  236. of the tabernacle.

  237. So many major events

  238. in the book of Exodus,

  239. but I believe that these few verses

  240. are the high point

  241. because they follow the lowest point.

  242. These verses are the zenith

  243. because they follow the nadir.

  244. It's one of the most important texts

  245. of the entire Bible.

  246. But before we look at those verses

  247. that Emma's already read for us

  248. in Exodus 34

  249. and chairs as well

  250. in the Bible reading,

  251. we need to take in some of the context.

  252. Exodus chapter 32 records

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  253. a catastrophic failure

  254. on the part of God's people Israel.

  255. Look at the start of Exodus 32 with me.

  256. Exodus 32 verses 6 and 7.

    Exodus 32:6

  257. This won't be on the screen,

  258. but if you have Bibles open,

  259. it'd be great if you could see it

  260. and follow along.

  261. Exodus 32 verses 1 to 6.

    Exodus 32:1–6

  262. I'm going to read, sorry.

  263. 32.

  264. When the people saw that Moses

  265. delayed to come down the mountain,

  266. the people gathered themselves together

  267. to Aaron and said to him,

  268. up,

  269. make us gods who shall go before us.

  270. As for this Moses,

  271. the man who brought us up

  272. out of the land of Egypt,

  273. we do not know what has become of him.

  274. So Aaron said to them,

  275. take off the rings of gold

  276. that are in the ears of your wives,

  277. your sons and your daughters

  278. and bring them to me.

  279. So all the people took off

  280. the rings of gold

  281. that were in their ears

  282. and brought them to Aaron

  283. and he received the gold

  284. from their hand

  285. and fashioned it

  286. with a graving tool

  287. and made a golden calf.

  288. And they said,

  289. these are your gods,

  290. O Israel,

  291. who brought you up

  292. out of the land of Egypt.

  293. When Aaron saw this,

  294. he built an altar before it

  295. and Aaron made a proclamation

  296. and said,

  297. tomorrow shall be a feast

  298. to the Lord.

  299. And they rose up early

  300. the next day

  301. and offered burnt offerings

  302. and brought peace offerings

  303. and the people sat down

  304. to eat and drink

  305. and rose up to play.

  306. Now for no better reason

  307. than that Moses

  308. was taking a while

  309. on Mount Sinai,

  310. Israel disobeyed

  311. the law they had just received

  312. and broke the covenant

  313. they had just made.

  314. They engage in idolatry,

  315. the crafting of a graven image,

  316. in false worship,

  317. in blasphemy

  318. against the name of the Lord,

  319. in implementing novel sacrifices,

  320. an invented festival,

  321. and I think it suggested

  322. debauchery

  323. and they rose up to play

  324. in implying drunkenness

  325. and promiscuity.

  326. If Israel had deliberately

  327. sat down

  328. and brainstormed

  329. how they could break

  330. as many commandments

  331. as possible

  332. in one fell swoop,

  333. I don't think,

  334. you know,

  335. they would have been

  336. hard-pressed to come up

  337. with a better scheme

  338. than this.

  339. I'm a catastrophic failure.

  340. And God's response

  341. is devastating.

  342. Look at what God says

  343. to Moses

  344. in verse 7.

  345. And the Lord

  346. says to Moses,

  347. said to Moses,

  348. listen to God's words here,

  349. the Lord said to Moses,

  350. go down

  351. for

  352. your people

  353. whom

  354. you brought up

  355. out of the land of Egypt

  356. have corrupted themselves.

  357. See how God's just

  358. completely disowned Israel.

  359. Not my people,

  360. your people

  361. whom you brought out.

  362. And verse 10,

  363. he declares his intention

  364. to destroy them.

  365. He says,

  366. God says to Moses,

  367. now therefore let me alone

  368. that my wrath

  369. may burn hot

  370. against them

  371. and I may consume them

  372. in order that I may make

  373. a great nation

  374. of you.

  375. God says,

  376. I'll wipe them out.

  377. I'll just start again

  378. with you,

  379. Moses.

  380. No more of this

  381. corrupt,

  382. rebellious

  383. Israel.

  384. Israel is on the cusp

  385. of complete

  386. and utter

  387. ruin.

  388. And it raises

  389. the question for us,

  390. has everything

  391. that's happened before

  392. in the book of Exodus,

  393. all the events

  394. that have taken place,

  395. the plagues,

  396. the parting of the sea,

  397. the war,

  398. all of it,

  399. is it all just

  400. a complete waste of time?

  401. Is it all pointless?

  402. Is it all utterly

  403. in vain?

  404. Is it all

  405. at this point,

  406. it would have been

  407. better off,

  408. Israel would have been

  409. better off

  410. if God had left

  411. them in Egypt

  412. than that he'd

  413. brought them out?

  414. There'd been

  415. earlier points

  416. in Israel's escape

  417. from Egypt

  418. where things

  419. had looked a bit

  420. shaky.

  421. But at each

  422. of those points,

  423. all Israel really

  424. needed was the

  425. power of God

  426. to rescue them.

  427. The power of God

  428. to keep sending

  429. plagues

  430. until finally

  431. even hard-hearted

  432. Pharaoh

  433. was forced

  434. to capitulate.

  435. The power

  436. of God

  437. to confuse

  438. the Egyptian army,

  439. the power

  440. of God

  441. to part

  442. the sea,

  443. the power

  444. of God

  445. to bring

  446. water from

  447. a rock

  448. and provide

  449. food in

  450. the wilderness.

  451. But the

  452. golden calf

  453. crisis

  454. was a crisis

  455. on a whole

  456. new level

  457. because now

  458. the power

  459. of God

  460. was not an

  461. ally

  462. to the

  463. Israelites

  464. but a

  465. threat to

  466. their very

  467. existence.

  468. The Israelites

  469. had become

  470. Pharaoh

  471. and the

  472. Egyptians.

  473. They had

  474. made God

  475. into their

  476. enemy.

  477. Now,

  478. brothers and

  479. sisters,

  480. just imagine

  481. if we

  482. found ourselves

  483. in this

  484. place

  485. every time

  486. we sinned

  487. against God.

  488. If every

  489. time we

  490. put idols

  491. before God,

  492. we found

  493. ourselves

  494. here,

  495. where the

  496. Israelites

  497. were that

  498. day.

  499. For

  500. example,

  501. let's

  502. say

  503. I'm

  504. feeling

  505. anxious

  506. or stressed

  507. about

  508. something.

  509. something's

  510. really

  511. troubling

  512. me.

  513. And

  514. instead of

  515. praying,

  516. instead of

  517. turning to

  518. God,

  519. I turn

  520. to

  521. Netflix

  522. or

  523. alcohol

  524. or

  525. exercise

  526. or

  527. whatever

  528. it might

  529. be.

  530. And I

  531. say,

  532. Netflix,

  533. you're the

  534. one who can

  535. help me deal

  536. with my

  537. worries.

  538. Exercise,

  539. you're the

  540. one that's

  541. going to

  542. save me

  543. from my

  544. troubles.

  545. And that's

  546. the kind of

  547. thing we

  548. often do,

  549. isn't it?

  550. When we're

  551. anxious or

  552. worried or

  553. weighed down

  554. with something,

  555. we know

  556. instead of

  557. turning to

  558. God,

  559. we turn to

  560. these other

  561. things.

  562. That may be

  563. less extreme

  564. than the

  565. golden

  566. calf,

  567. but it's

  568. not that

  569. dissimilar

  570. in terms of

  571. what we're

  572. doing.

  573. Imagine if

  574. any time we

  575. did something

  576. like that,

  577. God said,

  578. enough,

  579. I'm done

  580. with you.

  581. My wrath

  582. is burning

  583. against you.

  584. I'm going

  585. to wipe

  586. you out

  587. and start

  588. again.

  589. Which one

  590. of us

  591. would last

  592. even a

  593. day?

  594. Yet that's

  595. exactly where

  596. Israel found

  597. itself,

  598. through their

  599. own rebellion

  600. and idolatry.

  601. Israel

  602. and

  603. with

  604. destruction

  605. hovering over

  606. Israel

  607. and about

  608. to descend,

  609. Moses

  610. interceded.

  611. Moses had

  612. this offer

  613. from God

  614. that God

  615. would wipe

  616. out the

  617. rest of

  618. them and

  619. start again

  620. with Moses,

  621. but Moses

  622. wasn't

  623. interested in

  624. that.

  625. He refused

  626. to let

  627. himself be

  628. separated

  629. from Israel.

  630. He rather

  631. instead

  632. identified with

  633. Israel and

  634. he interceded

  635. for them.

  636. In verse

  637. 11 of

  638. chapter 32,

  639. he implored

  640. the Lord

  641. his God.

  642. Now there

  643. are three

  644. stages to

  645. Moses'

  646. intercession.

  647. We don't

  648. really have

  649. time to

  650. go into

  651. all the

  652. details

  653. here,

  654. but I'll

  655. just try

  656. and fly

  657. through it

  658. a bit.

  659. Stage

  660. one is

  661. in chapter

  662. 32

  663. verses

  664. 11 to

  665. 13.

  666. First

  667. notice how

  668. he starts

  669. in verse

  670. 11.

  671. O Lord,

  672. why does

  673. your wrath

  674. burn hot

  675. against

  676. your people

  677. whom you

  678. have brought

  679. out of the

  680. land of

  681. Egypt with

  682. great power

  683. and with

  684. a mighty

  685. hand?

  686. Notice

  687. how he

  688. challenges

  689. God who

  690. had just

  691. disowned his

  692. people and

  693. says,

  694. no God,

  695. they're yours

  696. and you're

  697. the one who

  698. redeemed

  699. them.

  700. Verse

  701. 13,

  702. he calls

  703. on the

  704. Lord to

  705. remember his

  706. promise to

  707. Abraham,

  708. Isaac and

  709. Jacob,

  710. calls on

  711. him to

  712. turn from

  713. his burning

  714. anger and

  715. the outcome

  716. in verse

  717. 14 is

  718. the Lord

  719. relented

  720. from the

  721. disaster that

  722. he'd spoken

  723. of bringing

  724. on his

  725. people.

  726. So the

  727. Lord doesn't

  728. just wipe

  729. them out

  730. and destroy

  731. them.

  732. That's stage

  733. one of

  734. Moses'

  735. intercession.

  736. But there

  737. are still

  738. some questions

  739. unresolved.

  740. You know,

  741. okay,

  742. God's not

  743. going to

  744. wipe them

  745. out,

  746. but what

  747. does this

  748. mean for

  749. Israel's

  750. future?

  751. So stage

  752. two comes

  753. in chapter

  754. 32 verses

  755. 31 and

  756. 32,

  757. where Moses

  758. confesses the

  759. people's

  760. sin to

  761. the Lord

  762. and asks

  763. God's

  764. forgiveness

  765. and even

  766. offers himself

  767. in their

  768. place.

  769. And the

  770. outcome is

  771. that God

  772. reinstates

  773. their future.

  774. He says,

  775. verse 34,

  776. chapter 32,

  777. verse 34,

  778. now go lead

  779. the people to

  780. the place about

  781. which I've

  782. spoken to

  783. you.

  784. Behold,

  785. my angel

  786. shall go

  787. before you.

  788. And it

  789. continues in

  790. chapter 33

  791. verse 1,

  792. depart,

  793. go up from

  794. here,

  795. you and

  796. the people

  797. whom you

  798. brought up

  799. from the

  800. land of

  801. Egypt.

  802. He says,

  803. you can

  804. go to

  805. the land,

  806. I'll give

  807. you the

  808. land,

  809. verse 2,

  810. 33,

  811. verse 2,

  812. I'll send

  813. my angel

  814. before you,

  815. he'll drive

  816. out the

  817. Canaanites,

  818. verse 3,

  819. go to the

  820. land of

  821. flowing with

  822. milk and

  823. honey,

  824. they have

  825. their future,

  826. they have

  827. their life,

  828. they have

  829. their future,

  830. but look

  831. what God

  832. says at

  833. 33 verse

  834. 3,

  835. at the end

  836. of verse

  837. 3,

  838. so they

  839. have their

  840. life,

  841. they're not

  842. going to be

  843. destroyed,

  844. they have

  845. their future,

  846. they can

  847. continue and

  848. go to the

  849. land and

  850. God will

  851. give it

  852. to them,

  853. but they

  854. have forfeited

  855. their most

  856. precious

  857. treasure,

  858. the presence

  859. of God

  860. himself with

  861. them.

  862. And so

  863. stage 3 of

  864. Moses'

  865. intercession

  866. comes in

  867. chapters 33

  868. verse 12

  869. to 16,

  870. which

  871. Ches read

  872. for us

  873. earlier.

  874. And it

  875. begins

  876. chapter 33

  877. verse 12,

  878. see you

  879. say to

  880. me bring

  881. up this

  882. people but

  883. you've not

  884. let me know

  885. whom you

  886. shall send

  887. with me.

  888. Yet

  889. you've said

  890. I know

  891. you by

  892. name and

  893. you've

  894. also found

  895. favour in

  896. my son.

  897. Moses is

  898. appealing to

  899. the Lord

  900. are you

  901. going to

  902. come with

  903. us Lord?

  904. Verse

  905. 15,

  906. Moses said

  907. to the

  908. Lord,

  909. if your

  910. presence

  911. will not

  912. go with

  913. me,

  914. don't

  915. bring us

  916. up from

  917. here.

  918. For how

  919. shall it

  920. be known

  921. that I

  922. have found

  923. favour in

  924. your sight,

  925. I and

  926. your people?

  927. Is it

  928. not by

  929. your

  930. going

  931. with us

  932. so that

  933. we are

  934. distinct?

  935. I and

  936. your

  937. people from

  938. every other

  939. people on

  940. the face

  941. of your

  942. earth?

  943. None of

  944. the rest

  945. of it

  946. matters,

  947. God,

  948. if you

  949. do not

  950. go with

  951. us.

  952. And so

  953. the outcome

  954. to this

  955. third stage

  956. of intercession,

  957. chapter 33,

  958. verse 17,

  959. and the

  960. Lord said

  961. to Moses,

  962. this very

  963. thing that

  964. you've

  965. spoken,

  966. I will

  967. do,

  968. for you

  969. have found

  970. favour in

  971. my sight,

  972. and I

  973. know you

  974. by name.

  975. So by

  976. three

  977. stages,

  978. God

  979. grants

  980. Israel

  981. their

  982. life,

  983. he

  984. grants

  985. Israel

  986. their

  987. future,

  988. and he

  989. grants

  990. Israel

  991. his

  992. presence

  993. with

  994. them.

  995. And in

  996. 33,

  997. verse 18,

  998. Moses said,

  999. please show

  1000. me your

  1001. glory.

  1002. Now there's

  1003. two

  1004. possible,

  1005. you know,

  1006. show me

  1007. your glory,

  1008. Lord.

  1009. There are

  1010. two possible

  1011. reasons Moses

  1012. is asking

  1013. this,

  1014. maybe it's

  1015. just in

  1016. his

  1017. exuberance.

  1018. He's

  1019. overcome

  1020. with

  1021. thankfulness.

  1022. He wants

  1023. to see

  1024. more of

  1025. God.

  1026. Or perhaps

  1027. secondly,

  1028. maybe he's

  1029. seeking

  1030. reassurance.

  1031. He's

  1032. asking for

  1033. a sign

  1034. that God

  1035. really will

  1036. do what

  1037. he's just

  1038. said he'll

  1039. do.

  1040. Either way,

  1041. God's

  1042. response

  1043. comes in

  1044. verse 19,

  1045. I'll make

  1046. all my

  1047. goodness

  1048. pass

  1049. before you

  1050. and will

  1051. proclaim

  1052. before you

  1053. my name,

  1054. the Lord.

  1055. notice that

  1056. God's

  1057. glory that

  1058. Moses asked

  1059. to see

  1060. in verse

  1061. 18 is

  1062. God's

  1063. goodness,

  1064. which he

  1065. says will

  1066. pass before

  1067. him in

  1068. verse 19.

  1069. And both

  1070. are connected

  1071. to God's

  1072. name,

  1073. God's

  1074. glory,

  1075. God's

  1076. goodness,

  1077. God's

  1078. name.

  1079. God's

  1080. God's

  1081. God's

  1082. God's

  1083. face

  1084. is a

  1085. deeper

  1086. revelation

  1087. of who

  1088. God

  1089. himself

  1090. is,

  1091. of who

  1092. God

  1093. is.

  1094. Verse

  1095. 20 to

  1096. 23,

  1097. God

  1098. explains

  1099. that

  1100. Moses

  1101. can't

  1102. see

  1103. God's

  1104. face

  1105. and

  1106. live

  1107. so

  1108. great

  1109. is

  1110. the

  1111. Lord

  1112. that

  1113. God

  1114. will

  1115. hide

  1116. Moses

  1117. in

  1118. the

  1119. cleft

  1120. of

  1121. a

  1122. rock

  1123. until

  1124. he

  1125. passes

  1126. by

  1127. so

  1128. that

  1129. Moses

  1130. will

  1131. only

  1132. see

  1133. the

  1134. back

  1135. of

  1136. God.

  1137. Nevertheless,

  1138. God

  1139. is

  1140. revealing

  1141. himself

  1142. to

  1143. Moses.

  1144. His

  1145. glory,

  1146. his

  1147. goodness,

  1148. his

  1149. name,

  1150. they're

  1151. interconnected.

  1152. This

  1153. is

  1154. God's

  1155. identity,

  1156. this

  1157. is

  1158. his

  1159. nature,

  1160. his

  1161. core

  1162. nature.

  1163. And

  1164. what

  1165. did

  1166. God

  1167. reveal

  1168. to

  1169. Moses?

  1170. The

  1171. glory

  1172. that

  1173. God

  1174. showed

  1175. to

  1176. Moses

  1177. is

  1178. that

  1179. he

  1180. is

  1181. kind.

  1182. 34

  1183. verse

  1184. 5.

  1185. The

  1186. Lord

  1187. descended

  1188. in

  1189. the

  1190. cloud

  1191. and

  1192. stood

  1193. with

  1194. him

  1195. there

  1196. and

  1197. proclaimed

  1198. the

  1199. name

  1200. of

  1201. the

  1202. Lord.

  1203. The

  1204. Lord

  1205. passed

  1206. before

  1207. him

  1208. and

  1209. proclaimed

  1210. the

  1211. Lord,

  1212. the

  1213. Lord,

  1214. a

  1215. God

  1216. merciful

  1217. and

  1218. gracious,

  1219. slow

  1220. to

  1221. anger

  1222. and

  1223. abounding

  1224. in

  1225. steadfast

  1226. love

  1227. and

  1228. faithfulness,

  1229. keeping

  1230. steadfast

  1231. love

  1232. for

  1233. thousands,

  1234. forgiving

  1235. iniquity

  1236. and

  1237. transgression

  1238. and

  1239. sin.

  1240. Now,

  1241. yes,

  1242. there's

  1243. more that

  1244. follows

  1245. and maybe

  1246. we'll

  1247. look at

  1248. that

  1249. next

  1250. week.

  1251. But I

  1252. want us

  1253. to focus

  1254. on God's

  1255. revelation

  1256. here of

  1257. his

  1258. kindness.

  1259. Notice

  1260. in verses

  1261. 5 and

  1262. 6,

  1263. it's

  1264. the

  1265. Lord

  1266. who

  1267. is

  1268. proclaiming

  1269. his

  1270. own

  1271. name.

  1272. This

  1273. isn't

  1274. what

  1275. Moses

  1276. is

  1277. saying

  1278. about

  1279. God,

  1280. this

  1281. is

  1282. what

  1283. God

  1284. is

  1285. saying

  1286. about

  1287. himself.

  1288. God

  1289. is

  1290. making

  1291. himself

  1292. known,

  1293. he is

  1294. declaring

  1295. who

  1296. he

  1297. is

  1298. to

  1299. Moses.

  1300. And

  1301. this

  1302. revelation

  1303. of who

  1304. God

  1305. is

  1306. in

  1307. these

  1308. verses

  1309. here

  1310. as

  1311. he

  1312. passes

  1313. before

  1314. Moses

  1315. is

  1316. not

  1317. incidental

  1318. to

  1319. what's

  1320. happened

  1321. in

  1322. chapters

  1323. 32

  1324. and

  1325. 33.

  1326. Rather,

  1327. as

  1328. God

  1329. declares

  1330. his

  1331. name,

  1332. as

  1333. he

  1334. shows

  1335. his

  1336. goodness,

  1337. his

  1338. glory,

  1339. his

  1340. character,

  1341. God is

  1342. explaining

  1343. what's

  1344. taken

  1345. place

  1346. in

  1347. chapters

  1348. 32

  1349. and

  1350. 33.

  1351. God

  1352. is

  1353. explaining

  1354. why

  1355. when

  1356. Moses

  1357. interceded

  1358. the first

  1359. time,

  1360. the Lord

  1361. relented

  1362. from the

  1363. disaster

  1364. he'd

  1365. planned

  1366. and

  1367. did

  1368. not

  1369. destroy

  1370. Israel.

  1371. He's

  1372. explaining

  1373. why

  1374. when

  1375. Moses

  1376. interceded

  1377. the second

  1378. time,

  1379. the Lord

  1380. reinstated

  1381. their future

  1382. in the

  1383. promised

  1384. land.

  1385. He's

  1386. explaining

  1387. why

  1388. when

  1389. Moses

  1390. interceded

  1391. the third

  1392. time,

  1393. the Lord

  1394. even

  1395. agreed

  1396. that

  1397. he

  1398. would

  1399. go

  1400. with

  1401. them.

  1402. Why

  1403. he was

  1404. willing

  1405. to forgive

  1406. their

  1407. iniquity

  1408. and

  1409. transgression

  1410. and

  1411. sin.

  1412. Now,

  1413. there are

  1414. three key

  1415. words in

  1416. Exodus 34

    Exodus 34:6

  1417. verse 6

  1418. that

  1419. describe

  1420. the kind

  1421. heart

  1422. of God.

  1423. Merciful,

  1424. gracious

  1425. and

  1426. steadfast

  1427. love.

  1428. Now,

  1429. I want to

  1430. spend a few

  1431. moments thinking

  1432. about those

  1433. words.

  1434. Now,

  1435. just about

  1436. any words

  1437. in any

  1438. language

  1439. will have

  1440. a range

  1441. of meanings.

  1442. If you

  1443. look up

  1444. in the

  1445. Oxford

  1446. English

  1447. Dictionary

  1448. the word

  1449. merciful,

  1450. you'll

  1451. find three

  1452. different

  1453. meanings.

  1454. Eleven

  1455. different

  1456. meanings

  1457. for gracious

  1458. and 24

  1459. for the

  1460. noun

  1461. love.

  1462. So,

  1463. words

  1464. have a

  1465. range

  1466. of

  1467. meanings.

  1468. The

  1469. same

  1470. general

  1471. principle

  1472. that

  1473. applies

  1474. to

  1475. English

  1476. words,

  1477. it

  1478. applies

  1479. to

  1480. the

  1481. Hebrew

  1482. words

  1483. that

  1484. underlie

  1485. these

  1486. English

  1487. words

  1488. in our

  1489. translations

  1490. here.

  1491. So,

  1492. at one

  1493. level,

  1494. what God's

  1495. doing here

  1496. as he

  1497. speaks of

  1498. being

  1499. merciful

  1500. and

  1501. gracious

  1502. and

  1503. abounding

  1504. in

  1505. steadfast

  1506. love

  1507. is that

  1508. he's

  1509. kind

  1510. of

  1511. piling

  1512. on

  1513. synonyms

  1514. or

  1515. near

  1516. synonyms

  1517. for

  1518. effect

  1519. to show

  1520. who he

  1521. truly is.

  1522. It's a bit

  1523. similar to

  1524. in verse

  1525. 7 when he

  1526. speaks of

  1527. forgiving

  1528. iniquity

  1529. and

  1530. transgression

  1531. and sin.

  1532. When God

  1533. speaks of

  1534. forgiving

  1535. iniquity

  1536. and

  1537. transgression

  1538. and sin,

  1539. those words,

  1540. iniquity,

  1541. transgression,

  1542. they have

  1543. different shades

  1544. of meaning.

  1545. But what

  1546. God's

  1547. doing,

  1548. he's not

  1549. legislating

  1550. three

  1551. different

  1552. categories

  1553. of

  1554. misdemeanor

  1555. and saying

  1556. I forgive

  1557. this category

  1558. and that

  1559. category.

  1560. Rather,

  1561. he's

  1562. piling up

  1563. these

  1564. near

  1565. synonyms

  1566. to show

  1567. how expansive

  1568. his forgiveness

  1569. is.

  1570. No matter

  1571. what your

  1572. sin is

  1573. or what

  1574. kind of

  1575. sin it

  1576. is,

  1577. forgiveness

  1578. is available

  1579. for you.

  1580. So,

  1581. I don't

  1582. want to

  1583. press the

  1584. differences

  1585. too much,

  1586. but I do

  1587. want us

  1588. to spend

  1589. a little

  1590. time

  1591. thinking

  1592. about

  1593. these

  1594. three

  1595. words

  1596. because

  1597. these

  1598. are the

  1599. big

  1600. three

  1601. when it

  1602. comes to

  1603. the

  1604. kindness

  1605. of God.

  1606. There

  1607. are other

  1608. Hebrew

  1609. words

  1610. in the

  1611. Old

  1612. Testament

  1613. that

  1614. overlap

  1615. with

  1616. these.

  1617. There

  1618. are a

  1619. couple

  1620. of

  1621. words

  1622. that

  1623. are

  1624. often

  1625. translated

  1626. to

  1627. pity

  1628. or

  1629. despair

  1630. and

  1631. there's

  1632. others

  1633. about

  1634. forgiveness

  1635. and so on.

  1636. But these

  1637. are the

  1638. big

  1639. three.

  1640. I

  1641. think

  1642. these

  1643. are

  1644. the

  1645. most

  1646. important

  1647. words

  1648. in the

  1649. Old

  1650. Testament

  1651. when it

  1652. comes

  1653. to the

  1654. character,

  1655. the

  1656. word

  1657. is

  1658. compassionate.

  1659. Firstly,

  1660. the word

  1661. merciful,

  1662. which is

  1663. the other

  1664. way it's

  1665. commonly

  1666. translated

  1667. in Old

  1668. Testaments

  1669. is as

  1670. compassionate.

  1671. Here it's

  1672. an adjective

  1673. !

  1674. God is

  1675. merciful!

  1676. But this

  1677. word also

  1678. occurs as a

  1679. verb to

  1680. show mercy

  1681. or to

  1682. have

  1683. compassion

  1684. and as

  1685. a noun

  1686. mercy

  1687. or compassion.

  1688. In fact,

  1689. when it

  1690. occurs in the

  1691. noun form,

  1692. it's always

  1693. in a

  1694. plural

  1695. form,

  1696. which is

  1697. why some

  1698. English

  1699. translations

  1700. will come

  1701. across the

  1702. expression

  1703. God's

  1704. mercies,

  1705. plural.

  1706. So God's

  1707. mercy,

  1708. his

  1709. compassion,

  1710. this word

  1711. refers,

  1712. it can

  1713. refer both

  1714. to sort

  1715. of an

  1716. outward

  1717. act of

  1718. mercy,

  1719. but also

  1720. to the

  1721. inner

  1722. disposition

  1723. of

  1724. mercy

  1725. and

  1726. compassion.

  1727. That

  1728. God is

  1729. merciful,

  1730. that he's

  1731. compassionate,

  1732. means that

  1733. it is in

  1734. God's

  1735. very

  1736. nature

  1737. that he

  1738. is moved

  1739. by the

  1740. suffering

  1741. of others.

  1742. God is

  1743. not indifferent,

  1744. he's not

  1745. cold,

  1746. he's not

  1747. aloof,

  1748. he's a

  1749. God who

  1750. cares,

  1751. and because

  1752. he cares,

  1753. he acts.

  1754. What about

  1755. the second

  1756. word,

  1757. gracious?

  1758. Well,

  1759. similarly with

  1760. the first

  1761. word,

  1762. here it's an

  1763. adjective,

  1764. God is,

  1765. the Lord

  1766. is gracious,

  1767. when it's

  1768. used as an

  1769. adjective in

  1770. the Old

  1771. Testament,

  1772. it's only

  1773. ever used

  1774. of God,

  1775. in fact.

  1776. But again,

  1777. it can also

  1778. occur in the

  1779. Old Testament

  1780. as a verb,

  1781. translated

  1782. as something

  1783. like to be

  1784. gracious,

  1785. or to be

  1786. generous,

  1787. or to show

  1788. favour,

  1789. or as a

  1790. noun,

  1791. translated as

  1792. grace or

  1793. favour,

  1794. or in some

  1795. other ways.

  1796. So what does

  1797. it mean that

  1798. God is

  1799. gracious?

  1800. Well,

  1801. to borrow

  1802. an expression

  1803. from James

    James 1 chapter mention

  1804. chapter 1,

  1805. that God

  1806. is gracious

  1807. means that

  1808. he gives

  1809. generously

  1810. without finding

  1811. fault.

  1812. It's in

  1813. God's nature

  1814. to give.

  1815. He's inclined

  1816. to be

  1817. generous.

  1818. He's inclined

  1819. to bestow

  1820. favour,

  1821. even when

  1822. doing so

  1823. requires

  1824. overlooking

  1825. an offence.

  1826. he's

  1827. gracious.

  1828. What about

  1829. the third,

  1830. steadfast

  1831. love?

  1832. This one

  1833. only really

  1834. occurs,

  1835. or commonly

  1836. at least,

  1837. only occurs

  1838. commonly as

  1839. a noun,

  1840. hesed.

  1841. And it's

  1842. usually

  1843. translated in

  1844. ESV as

  1845. steadfast

  1846. love,

  1847. sometimes

  1848. translated as

  1849. in Micah

    Micah 6:8

  1850. 6 verse 8

  1851. it's translated

  1852. as the word

  1853. kindness.

  1854. The New

  1855. American Standard

  1856. Bible translates

  1857. it as

  1858. loving

  1859. kindness,

  1860. which goes

  1861. way back

  1862. to the

  1863. Coverdale

  1864. Bible

  1865. in 1535,

  1866. one of

  1867. the early

  1868. English

  1869. translations.

  1870. God's

  1871. steadfast

  1872. love,

  1873. that God

  1874. abounds

  1875. in steadfast

  1876. love,

  1877. means that

  1878. he is

  1879. full of

  1880. self-giving

  1881. love,

  1882. a love

  1883. that is

  1884. generous

  1885. and

  1886. bountiful

  1887. and that

  1888. will not

  1889. fail.

  1890. It means

  1891. that God

  1892. pledges

  1893. himself

  1894. to others

  1895. to be

  1896. for others,

  1897. to do

  1898. good to

  1899. others.

  1900. He

  1901. pledges

  1902. himself to

  1903. others

  1904. with an

  1905. unwavering

  1906. commitment

  1907. and that

  1908. magnificent

  1909. trio,

  1910. merciful,

  1911. gracious,

  1912. abounding

  1913. in steadfast

  1914. love,

  1915. that expounds

  1916. the name

  1917. of God.

  1918. That is

  1919. essential to

  1920. his glory

  1921. and his

  1922. goodness.

  1923. It is the

  1924. glory of

  1925. God that

  1926. he is

  1927. kind.

  1928. God

  1929. and this

  1930. is who

  1931. God

  1932. shows

  1933. himself

  1934. to be

  1935. in the

  1936. aftermath

  1937. of

  1938. Israel's

  1939. rebellion

  1940. with the

  1941. golden

  1942. calf.

  1943. But this

  1944. revelation

  1945. of God's

  1946. glory and

  1947. goodness to

  1948. Moses,

  1949. that then

  1950. echoes

  1951. through the

  1952. rest of

  1953. the Bible,

  1954. through the

  1955. rest of the

  1956. Old Testament,

  1957. through the

  1958. prophets,

  1959. through the

  1960. Psalms.

  1961. So the

  1962. prophet Joel,

  1963. for example,

  1964. Israel was

  1965. suffering a

  1966. locust plague

  1967. because of

  1968. their sin,

  1969. or maybe

  1970. actually it

  1971. was an

  1972. invading army

  1973. that's

  1974. metaphorically

  1975. described as

  1976. a locust

  1977. plague,

  1978. but whichever

  1979. it is,

  1980. Joel calls

  1981. on Israel

  1982. to return

  1983. to the

  1984. Lord and

  1985. the basis

  1986. on which

  1987. returning

  1988. to the

  1989. Lord would

  1990. not be

  1991. in vain

  1992. is the

  1993. revelation

  1994. God had

  1995. made of

  1996. himself here

  1997. to Moses.

  1998. verse 12

  1999. to 13,

  2000. we read

  2001. these words,

  2002. yet even

  2003. now

  2004. declares

  2005. the Lord,

  2006. return to

  2007. me with

  2008. all your

  2009. heart,

  2010. with fasting,

  2011. with weeping

  2012. and with

  2013. mourning,

  2014. and rend

  2015. your hearts

  2016. and not

  2017. your garments,

  2018. return to

  2019. the Lord

  2020. your God,

  2021. for he

  2022. is gracious

  2023. and merciful,

  2024. slow to

  2025. anger and

  2026. abounding in

  2027. steadfast love,

  2028. and he

  2029. relents over

  2030. disaster.

  2031. Do you

  2032. hear the

  2033. echoes of

  2034. Exodus?

  2035. King

  2036. Hezekiah in

  2037. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 30:9

  2038. 30 verse

  2039. 9, when

  2040. he's calling

  2041. on Israel

  2042. and Judah

  2043. to return

  2044. to God

  2045. in the

  2046. light of

  2047. the looming

  2048. threat of

  2049. the Assyrian

  2050. empire,

  2051. again he

  2052. hearkens back

  2053. to this

  2054. revelation of

  2055. God in

  2056. Exodus 34,

  2057. for if you

  2058. return to

  2059. the Lord,

  2060. your brothers

  2061. and your

  2062. children will

  2063. find compassion

  2064. with their

  2065. captors and

  2066. return to

  2067. this land,

  2068. for the Lord

  2069. your God

  2070. is gracious

  2071. and merciful

  2072. and will not

  2073. turn his face

  2074. away from you

  2075. if you return

  2076. to him.

  2077. in the book

  2078. of Lamentations

  2079. when the

  2080. traumatized

  2081. survivors

  2082. of Jerusalem

  2083. which has

  2084. just been

  2085. destroyed by

  2086. Babylon,

  2087. this traumatized

  2088. few that are

  2089. left in the

  2090. land are

  2091. trying to

  2092. come to

  2093. terms with

  2094. what had

  2095. happened.

  2096. We read in

  2097. Lamentations 3

  2098. these words,

  2099. I mean I

  2100. could multiply

  2101. examples beyond

  2102. these right?

  2103. Jonah when he

  2104. complains about

  2105. what God is

  2106. like because

  2107. Jonah doesn't

  2108. want God to

  2109. forgive the

  2110. Ninevites,

  2111. he again,

  2112. he quotes

  2113. Exodus 34

    Exodus 34:6

  2114. verse 6,

  2115. so I know

  2116. you'll like

  2117. this God.

  2118. Nehemiah

  2119. in Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  2120. chapter 9,

  2121. this is when

  2122. remnants returned

  2123. from the Babylonian

  2124. exile,

  2125. they're living in

  2126. Jerusalem,

  2127. this small

  2128. community and

  2129. Nehemiah is

  2130. confessing Israel's

  2131. sin,

  2132. in his prayer

  2133. he clings on

  2134. to God's mercy

  2135. as revealed to

  2136. Moses in exactly

  2137. these words.

  2138. In the Psalms,

  2139. in the prophets,

  2140. this revelation

  2141. of God's kindness

  2142. in Exodus 34

  2143. became the basis

  2144. for Israel's

  2145. hope.

  2146. And in

  2147. particular we

  2148. see this

  2149. trio of

  2150. glorious

  2151. words

  2152. extend in

  2153. two related

  2154. directions.

  2155. See that

  2156. God is kind

  2157. means first

  2158. that there is

  2159. grace for the

  2160. guilty.

  2161. Consider David's

  2162. prayer after

  2163. his adultery

  2164. with Bathsheba

  2165. in Psalm 51

  2166. and notice the

  2167. trio of

  2168. words here,

  2169. Psalm 51

    Psalms 51:1

  2170. verses 1 and

  2171. 2,

  2172. be gracious

  2173. to me

  2174. O God

  2175. according to

  2176. your steadfast

  2177. love,

  2178. according to

  2179. your abundant

  2180. mercy,

  2181. blot out my

  2182. transgressions,

  2183. wash me

  2184. thoroughly from

  2185. my iniquity and

  2186. cleanse me from

  2187. my sin.

  2188. Now that was

  2189. David's prayer.

  2190. prayer.

  2191. Now when we

  2192. sin,

  2193. brothers and

  2194. sisters,

  2195. what hope do

  2196. we have

  2197. except that

  2198. God is

  2199. gracious and

  2200. merciful and

  2201. abounding in

  2202. steadfast love?

  2203. Our only hope

  2204. of forgiveness

  2205. is because of

  2206. who God

  2207. himself

  2208. is.

  2209. Now you

  2210. might respond,

  2211. our only hope

  2212. of forgiveness

  2213. is in the

  2214. cross of

  2215. Christ and

  2216. you'd be

  2217. absolutely

  2218. right.

  2219. But it's

  2220. important that

  2221. we have the

  2222. order right in

  2223. our understanding.

  2224. The cross of

  2225. Christ doesn't

  2226. compel God to

  2227. be gracious.

  2228. Rather,

  2229. the grace of

  2230. God compelled

  2231. Christ to the

  2232. cross.

  2233. The cross

  2234. doesn't make

  2235. God love

  2236. us.

  2237. Rather,

  2238. the cross

  2239. demonstrates

  2240. God's love.

  2241. The cross

  2242. doesn't force

  2243. God to be

  2244. compassionate.

  2245. It expresses

  2246. God's

  2247. compassion.

  2248. We would

  2249. not be

  2250. forgiven

  2251. without the

  2252. cross,

  2253. but without

  2254. the mercy

  2255. and grace

  2256. and steadfast

  2257. love of

  2258. God,

  2259. there would

  2260. be no

  2261. cross.

  2262. This is a

  2263. wonderful truth

  2264. to take

  2265. hold of.

  2266. It means

  2267. that for us

  2268. forgiveness

  2269. and salvation

  2270. and the

  2271. love of

  2272. God,

  2273. they all

  2274. have their

  2275. ultimate

  2276. source in

  2277. the nature

  2278. of God

  2279. himself,

  2280. in his

  2281. glory,

  2282. in his

  2283. goodness.

  2284. We have

  2285. hope.

  2286. Why?

  2287. Because of

  2288. who God

  2289. is.

  2290. we have

  2291. a saviour.

  2292. Why?

  2293. Because of

  2294. who God

  2295. is.

  2296. And because

  2297. of who God

  2298. is, we

  2299. have all

  2300. those blessings

  2301. that were

  2302. restored to

  2303. Israel in

  2304. Exodus

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  2305. chapters 32

  2306. to 34.

  2307. We have

  2308. life.

  2309. We're not

  2310. consumed by

  2311. God's wrath.

  2312. We have a

  2313. future.

  2314. There's a

  2315. land he's

  2316. promised to

  2317. us, a

  2318. heavenly

  2319. home.

  2320. and we

  2321. have God

  2322. himself, his

  2323. presence with

  2324. us forever, the

  2325. sum of all

  2326. blessings.

  2327. There's the

  2328. first direction

  2329. the kind

  2330. heart of God

  2331. goes in the

  2332. Bible, grace

  2333. for the guilty.

  2334. There's a

  2335. second direction,

  2336. compassion for

  2337. the needy.

  2338. Now how

  2339. often in the

  2340. Psalms do we

  2341. find prayers

  2342. where an

  2343. appeal for

  2344. God's mercy

  2345. accompanies an

  2346. expression of

  2347. human need?

  2348. Consider

  2349. Psalm 6

    Psalms 6:2

  2350. verse 2, but

  2351. you can find

  2352. it all through

  2353. the Psalms.

  2354. Psalm 6

    Psalms 6:2

  2355. verse 2,

  2356. Be gracious

  2357. to me, O

  2358. Lord, for

  2359. I am

  2360. languishing.

  2361. Heal me, O

  2362. Lord, for

  2363. my bones are

  2364. troubled.

  2365. My soul

  2366. also is

  2367. greatly

  2368. troubled.

  2369. But you,

  2370. O Lord,

  2371. how long?

  2372. Turn, O

  2373. Lord, deliver

  2374. my life.

  2375. Save me

  2376. for the

  2377. sake of

  2378. your

  2379. steadfast

  2380. love.

  2381. Now read

  2382. the Psalms

  2383. and you'll

  2384. find example

  2385. after example

  2386. of this,

  2387. side by

  2388. side, an

  2389. outpouring of

  2390. the

  2391. Psalmist's

  2392. need and

  2393. trouble and

  2394. affliction and

  2395. suffering and

  2396. distress with

  2397. an appeal to

  2398. God for

  2399. help that

  2400. draws on one

  2401. of more of

  2402. that magnificent

  2403. trio of

  2404. words,

  2405. the kind

  2406. heart of

  2407. God.

  2408. The

  2409. Psalmist

  2410. presents his

  2411. need and

  2412. then he

  2413. says,

  2414. save me

  2415. for the

  2416. sake of

  2417. your

  2418. steadfast

  2419. love.

  2420. Brothers,

  2421. sisters,

  2422. we can

  2423. pray like

  2424. that because

  2425. our need

  2426. is a

  2427. magnet for

  2428. God's

  2429. compassion.

  2430. When we

  2431. pray like

  2432. that, we're

  2433. not testing

  2434. God's

  2435. patience.

  2436. When we

  2437. pour out

  2438. our

  2439. desperation

  2440. to God,

  2441. we're not

  2442. testing God's

  2443. patience.

  2444. We're opening

  2445. ourselves up to

  2446. his glory.

  2447. Any trouble

  2448. we face,

  2449. any pain,

  2450. any affliction

  2451. is an

  2452. opportunity to

  2453. draw near to

  2454. God and

  2455. to ask him

  2456. to be who

  2457. he is.

  2458. What God

  2459. desires of us

  2460. is that we

  2461. would love

  2462. kindness.

  2463. Jesus said

  2464. in Luke

    Luke 6:36

  2465. 6 verse

  2466. 36,

  2467. be merciful

  2468. even as

  2469. your father

  2470. is merciful.

  2471. If we're

  2472. going to

  2473. show God's

  2474. kindness,

  2475. we need

  2476. to know

  2477. God's

  2478. kindness.

  2479. The

  2480. problem with

  2481. the Pharisees

  2482. who confronted

  2483. Jesus,

  2484. who objected

  2485. to Jesus

  2486. eating with

  2487. tax collectors

  2488. and sinners,

  2489. is that

  2490. they were

  2491. self-righteous.

  2492. They didn't

  2493. know God's

  2494. kindness for

  2495. themselves.

  2496. Jesus said

  2497. to them,

  2498. when they

  2499. objected,

  2500. he said,

  2501. go and

  2502. learn what

  2503. this means.

  2504. Then he

  2505. quoted Hosea

    Hosea 6 chapter mention

  2506. chapter 6,

  2507. go and

  2508. learn what

  2509. this means.

  2510. I desire

  2511. mercy,

  2512. not sacrifice.

  2513. What blocks

  2514. kindness is

  2515. self-righteousness.

  2516. But if you're

  2517. on one of the

  2518. Titanic's

  2519. lifeboats,

  2520. it's

  2521. ludicrous to

  2522. think that

  2523. you're on

  2524. one of those

  2525. lifeboats

  2526. because you're

  2527. more deserving

  2528. than the

  2529. people in

  2530. the water.

  2531. What

  2532. blocks

  2533. kindness is

  2534. self-righteousness,

  2535. but what

  2536. builds

  2537. kindness

  2538. is knowing

  2539. God's

  2540. kindness

  2541. to us.

  2542. You need

  2543. to know

  2544. God's

  2545. kindness

  2546. to you

  2547. before you

  2548. will see

  2549. God's

  2550. kindness

  2551. through you.

  2552. God's

  2553. love

  2554. God's

  2555. God's

  2556. love

  2557. to you.

  2558. If our

  2559. hearts are

  2560. cold, the

  2561. solution is to

  2562. draw near to

  2563. God himself, to

  2564. draw near to the

  2565. source of all

  2566. grace and

  2567. compassion and

  2568. kindness, to

  2569. recognize our

  2570. need and to

  2571. bask in God's

  2572. goodness and so

  2573. be moved that we

  2574. might be

  2575. merciful as our

  2576. Father has

  2577. been merciful to

  2578. us.

  2579. Will you pray

  2580. with me?

  2581. Lord God,

  2582. the creator of

  2583. all things,

  2584. the judge of

  2585. all the

  2586. earth, the

  2587. one infinite in

  2588. power and

  2589. wisdom, you

  2590. have shown

  2591. yourself to

  2592. be the

  2593. God who is

  2594. gracious and

  2595. merciful and

  2596. abounding in

  2597. steadfast love.

  2598. There is not

  2599. one need we

  2600. have which you

  2601. cannot supply out

  2602. of your infinite

  2603. goodness.

  2604. grace.

  2605. We thank you,

  2606. Lord God, that

  2607. it is your

  2608. heart to be

  2609. kind, that

  2610. this is your

  2611. glory.

  2612. We thank you

  2613. that you

  2614. freely forgive

  2615. us for all

  2616. our sins out

  2617. of the grace

  2618. shown to us

  2619. through Jesus'

  2620. death on the

  2621. cross.

  2622. We thank you

  2623. that every

  2624. need we have

  2625. we can bring

  2626. before you

  2627. knowing that

  2628. you are a

  2629. God full of

  2630. compassion,

  2631. that you care

  2632. for us.

  2633. So, Father, we

  2634. pray that you

  2635. would overwhelm

  2636. us with your

  2637. love and

  2638. kindness.

  2639. Show your

  2640. kindness to

  2641. us, that you

  2642. might show your

  2643. kindness through

  2644. us.

  2645. In Jesus' name

  2646. we pray.

  2647. Amen.
