  1. Well, good morning. Would you turn with me in your Bible to Psalm 63?

  2. So we're continuing our summer series through the second section of the Psalms.

  3. Psalm 63, it's found on page 479 if you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles.

  4. Psalm 63, a psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

  5. O God, you are my God. Earnestly I seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh faints for you,

  6. as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,

  7. beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life,

  8. my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live. In your name I will lift up my hands.

  9. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips

  10. when I remember you upon my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night. For you have been

  11. my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you. Your right hand

  12. upholds me. But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth.

  13. They shall be given over to the power of the sword. They shall be a portion for jackals.

  14. But the king shall rejoice in God. All who swear by him shall exult. For the mouths of liars will be

  15. stopped. Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for this psalm that David wrote so long ago. And we pray that

  16. you would speak to us through these words here today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  17. Amen. It's known as the toughest foot race in the world. The 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon

  18. has happened every year since 1977 on July 15 in Death Valley National Park. The race starts 280 feet

  19. below sea level. Continues over three mountain ranges to finish at 8,350 feet above sea level for a

  20. cumulative vertical ascent of 13,000 feet. The average high temperature in Death Valley in July is 116 degrees.

  21. This year, 96 competitors from 22 nations attempted the run. 81 finished it within 48 hours. The winner

  22. finished 135 miles in a little less than 24 hours. Now that's five regular marathons back to back.

  23. Most of us, it's hard to even imagine what's involved in such a feat.

  24. Right? Training to survive 100 plus degree temperatures in the middle of the desert with

  25. the sun beating down on you, running five marathons and climbing the equivalent of three or four

  26. mountains in the course of pulling an all-nighter or two. It's intense. Far beyond almost all of our

  27. daily experience. Now the psalm we're looking at this morning is also intense. And it's vivid.

  28. Beyond most of our daily experience. Even the setting of the psalm is intense. It says it was

  29. written when David was in the wilderness of Judah. Now the wilderness of Judah is the land east of

  30. Jerusalem sloping down toward the Dead Sea. And it's a place with less than two inches of rain

  31. that fall every year. Summer temperatures above 100 degrees. It's so dry that the land is often cracked

  32. because the soil is so dry. And David was hiding out there most likely because his son Absalom had

  33. staged a coup and taken over the throne from him. And he was fleeing for his life.

  34. But even more than the setting or David's personal circumstances, we see in this psalm a vivid picture

  35. of biblical spirituality or what it looks like to seek after God and be satisfied in God. David begins

  36. by saying, Oh God, you are my God. Earnestly I seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh faints for you.

  37. As in a dry and weary land where there's no water.

  38. David's life is oriented around pursuing God.

  39. The way that a runner's life is oriented around preparing

  40. for a marathon. From morning to night, everything that a serious runner does,

  41. from the food they eat, to their exercise regime, to their sleeping schedule,

  42. is oriented around the goal of training for the race.

  43. And in a similar way, David's life was oriented around seeking God

  44. from morning to night.

  45. He says in verse 1, Earnestly I seek you.

  46. The verse is sometimes translated,

  47. Early I will seek you.

  48. Either way, the point is that he's seeking God without delay,

  49. without procrastination,

  50. without hesitation,

  51. without distraction,

  52. without half-heartedness.

  53. Excuse me.

  54. When I was in college,

  55. one of the few groups of people

  56. who woke up early on a consistent basis

  57. were some of the varsity athletes

  58. who had early morning running or lifting

  59. or rowing sessions.

  60. And they organized their daily schedule

  61. around their commitment

  62. to pursuing their sport.

  63. They fit in their classes

  64. in that schedule

  65. and their training

  66. and went to bed at a reasonable hour.

  67. And as a result,

  68. they were more disciplined

  69. than most other students

  70. in how they spent their time.

  71. Because they had a driving passion

  72. around which the rest of their life

  73. was organized.

  74. And in a similar way,

  75. David's passion for seeking after God

  76. drives and motivates his life

  77. from morning to night.

  78. Verse 1 talks about seeking the Lord early.

  79. Verse 6 talks about late at night

  80. when he's laying in his bed

  81. in the middle of the night

  82. and he can't get to sleep.

  83. And he says,

  84. I remember you upon my bed

  85. and I meditate on you

  86. in the watches of the night.

  87. For David,

  88. God is the food that he eats,

  89. the water that he drinks,

  90. the air that he breathes,

  91. and the peace

  92. in which he can lie down and sleep.

  93. David's relationship with God

  94. is characterized

  95. both by intensity

  96. and by persistence.

  97. Like a person living in the desert,

  98. seeking after life-giving,

  99. refreshing, energizing water.

  100. If he doesn't find it,

  101. he'll perish.

  102. But you know,

  103. David isn't just

  104. making a one-time emergency request.

  105. He's not just turning to God

  106. out of desperate circumstances

  107. until his life

  108. gets smoothed out again.

  109. Verse 2 says,

  110. I've looked upon you

  111. in the sanctuary.

  112. In other words,

  113. in the tabernacle in Jerusalem

  114. when the people of God

  115. would gather together

  116. to worship

  117. and where he was king

  118. and where things were going well,

  119. he said,

  120. I have looked upon

  121. your power and glory.

  122. So the circumstances

  123. don't really matter

  124. whether David's all alone

  125. in the wilderness of Judah

  126. or whether he's surrounded

  127. by God's people

  128. in the city of Jerusalem.

  129. His life is focused around

  130. seeking after God.

  131. But you know,

  132. he doesn't just seek after God.

  133. He also finds

  134. great satisfaction in God.

  135. Verse 5 says,

  136. My soul will be satisfied

  137. as with fat and rich food

  138. and my mouth will praise you

  139. with joyful lips.

  140. Now literally that verse 5

  141. says my soul will be satisfied

  142. as with marrow and fatness.

  143. And now that phrase

  144. doesn't strike us

  145. in exactly the same way

  146. that it would have struck

  147. an ancient Israelite.

  148. Because we live in a culture

  149. that has an ambivalent relationship

  150. to fat.

  151. Now, in one sense,

  152. we do love fat.

  153. We probably eat too much of it.

  154. But in another sense,

  155. we always hear,

  156. we're constantly hearing messages

  157. that fat is bad for you

  158. and so you should buy skim milk

  159. instead of whole milk

  160. and buy chicken breasts

  161. that are 99% lean

  162. instead of drumsticks.

  163. Right?

  164. And all kinds of fat-free,

  165. low-fat products.

  166. But, although the diet trends

  167. are always changing

  168. and conflicting

  169. so you don't always hear

  170. the same advice

  171. depending on who you're listening to.

  172. But for an ancient Israelite,

  173. their daily food

  174. would have been bread

  175. and grains

  176. for the most part

  177. with maybe a little bit

  178. of olive oil

  179. or a little bit of

  180. very watered-down wine

  181. and some dried fruit.

  182. In some seasons of the year,

  183. they might have vegetables

  184. during certain growing seasons

  185. or harvest seasons

  186. or milk from sheep and goats.

  187. But for the most part,

  188. they ate bread.

  189. That's what sustained them

  190. from day to day.

  191. Now, meat,

  192. on the other hand,

  193. meat was a delicacy.

  194. Most people ate meat

  195. a few times a year.

  196. Maybe at weddings

  197. or at the major Jewish feasts

  198. or when an important guest

  199. came to your house.

  200. The only place

  201. where meat was served

  202. every single day of the year

  203. was the king's table.

  204. And so for most people,

  205. meat was a special treat.

  206. And they really enjoyed eating it.

  207. And in the Israelite culture,

  208. everybody knew

  209. that the best part of the meat

  210. was the fat and juicy parts.

  211. Because they weren't just tasty,

  212. they were satisfying.

  213. They made you feel full

  214. in a way that just eating bread

  215. and some vegetables wouldn't.

  216. And so David says here in verse 5,

  217. My soul finds such satisfaction

  218. in the Lord.

  219. It's like I've just eaten

  220. the best meal I could think of.

  221. The best meal known to man.

  222. I couldn't ask for anything else.

  223. I'm satisfied.

  224. I'm nourished.

  225. I'm strengthened to face the day.

  226. I'm gladdened.

  227. I have joy in my heart.

  228. That's the kind of deep satisfaction

  229. that he experienced in God.

  230. And then he goes on to say,

  231. My mouth will praise you

  232. with joyful lips.

  233. You know, isn't that

  234. what you naturally do

  235. when you have a great meal?

  236. Right?

  237. You want to tell somebody else

  238. and invite them to come with you

  239. to this awesome new restaurant

  240. that just opened,

  241. that has this awesome food.

  242. Or if you're at somebody else's house,

  243. you just start giving,

  244. gushing with compliments to the cook.

  245. Not just because you're trying

  246. to be polite,

  247. but because you're really enjoying

  248. the food that they've

  249. carefully prepared for you.

  250. And in the same way,

  251. when we're satisfied

  252. in the Lord,

  253. we praise Him

  254. not just because

  255. we're trying to be polite

  256. and do our duty

  257. and we feel like we have to,

  258. but because we want to.

  259. Because we're so satisfied in Him

  260. that we want to praise Him

  261. and we want to thank Him

  262. and we want to tell other people

  263. how awesome He is.

  264. And invite them

  265. to taste and see

  266. that He's good.

  267. So we see in this psalm

  268. this vivid picture

  269. of seeking God

  270. and being satisfied in God.

  271. Now, of course,

  272. the question that it raises for us

  273. is what about our relationship

  274. with God?

  275. Does it look anything like this?

  276. Does this characterize

  277. our approach toward God?

  278. Seeking and being satisfied in Him.

  279. Well, maybe you're here today.

  280. Maybe you're not a Christian.

  281. Or maybe you're not sure

  282. what you believe.

  283. Maybe you would say

  284. that you're a spiritual seeker.

  285. Let me challenge you

  286. with a question.

  287. Are you seeking God

  288. at your own pace

  289. and on your own terms?

  290. Are you seeking a God

  291. that fits you?

  292. A God who affirms you

  293. as you are

  294. and doesn't demand

  295. that you change

  296. in any way

  297. that you don't already

  298. want to change.

  299. If the God described

  300. in this psalm exists,

  301. He's not someone

  302. to simply be pursued

  303. at your own pace

  304. like a summer hobby

  305. or an extracurricular

  306. or an enrichment activity.

  307. This God is someone

  308. who calls you

  309. to reorient

  310. your whole life,

  311. your feeling,

  312. your thinking,

  313. your desires,

  314. your decisions

  315. around Him

  316. like a potential

  317. marriage partner

  318. even more.

  319. A long time ago,

  320. the Cambridge professor,

  321. C.S. Lewis,

  322. wrote the following.

  323. He said,

  324. people are reluctant

  325. to cross over

  326. from the notion

  327. of an abstract deity,

  328. an abstract idea

  329. of God

  330. to the living God.

  331. An abstract idea

  332. of God

  333. does nothing,

  334. demands nothing.

  335. He's there

  336. if you wish for Him,

  337. like a book

  338. on a shelf.

  339. He will not pursue you.

  340. But with the God

  341. of the Bible,

  342. it's different.

  343. He says,

  344. it is always shocking

  345. to meet life

  346. where we thought

  347. we were alone.

  348. Look, we say,

  349. it's alive.

  350. This is the very point

  351. at which so many people

  352. draw back.

  353. I would have done

  354. so myself

  355. if I could

  356. and proceed

  357. no further

  358. with Christianity.

  359. An impersonal God,

  360. well and good.

  361. a subject of God,

  362. of beauty,

  363. truth and goodness

  364. that exists

  365. in our own head.

  366. Better still,

  367. a formless life force

  368. surging through us,

  369. a vast power

  370. that we can tap into

  371. best of all.

  372. But God Himself,

  373. alive,

  374. pulling at the other end

  375. of the cord,

  376. perhaps approaching

  377. at an infinite speed,

  378. the hunter,

  379. the king,

  380. the husband,

  381. that is quite another matter.

  382. He says,

  383. there comes a moment

  384. when people who have been

  385. dabbling in religion,

  386. man's search for God,

  387. suddenly draw back,

  388. supposing we really found Him.

  389. We never meant it

  390. to come to that.

  391. Worse still,

  392. supposing He had found us.

  393. Let me urge you,

  394. do not draw back

  395. from the living God

  396. who is seeking after you.

  397. It can be the scariest thing

  398. in the world,

  399. but at the same time,

  400. it is potentially

  401. the most liberating thing

  402. in the world

  403. because the Bible

  404. seeks of a God

  405. who seeks us

  406. and who draws us

  407. to seek after Him,

  408. who puts an unquenchable thirst

  409. in our mouths

  410. that will only be satisfied

  411. in Him.

  412. Long ago,

  413. another man said,

  414. Lord,

  415. You have made us

  416. for Yourself

  417. and our hearts

  418. are restless

  419. until they find

  420. their rest in You.

  421. And Jesus Christ

  422. said,

  423. Come to Me,

  424. all you who are weary

  425. and heavy laden,

  426. and I will give you rest

  427. for your souls.

  428. So if you're seeking

  429. the truth,

  430. keep seeking

  431. until you find it.

  432. Seek Jesus

  433. because perhaps

  434. He is already seeking you

  435. and drawing you

  436. into a living relationship

  437. with Him.

  438. But now for those of us

  439. who are Christians,

  440. for those of us

  441. who would say,

  442. Yes,

  443. I believe in Jesus,

  444. I've come to Him.

  445. What about us?

  446. What do we seek after

  447. with intensity,

  448. with persistence?

  449. Well,

  450. many of us

  451. seek after success

  452. in our studies

  453. or in our career.

  454. Right?

  455. Especially here

  456. in New England,

  457. work and school

  458. demand a lot of time.

  459. They demand often

  460. not just weekdays,

  461. but also evenings

  462. and weekends

  463. and traveling away

  464. from home.

  465. They demand energy

  466. to develop new skills

  467. and face difficult situations

  468. and sometimes navigate

  469. difficult relationships

  470. with coworkers

  471. or fellow students.

  472. School demands money, too.

  473. Now,

  474. most of us are willing

  475. to meet those demands

  476. for time,

  477. energy,

  478. and even money

  479. because we really

  480. want to succeed

  481. in our work.

  482. Or many of us

  483. want to stay in shape

  484. or to get in shape.

  485. And so we're motivated

  486. to go to the gym

  487. early in the morning

  488. or to take long walks

  489. before the weather

  490. gets too hot

  491. or play a sport.

  492. We arrange our schedules

  493. around these things

  494. because we value them highly

  495. and we find joy

  496. when our health

  497. is improving.

  498. Some of us

  499. are invested

  500. in building a marriage

  501. or raising a family.

  502. Huge investments

  503. that are constantly demanding

  504. and at the same time

  505. immensely rewarding.

  506. And all of these things

  507. are worthy pursuits.

  508. But do we pursue God

  509. who is supremely worthy

  510. with even greater intensity

  511. and even greater persistence?

  512. Do we pursue God

  513. not just on the side,

  514. in addition to pursuing our work,

  515. pursuing our health,

  516. pursuing our relationships,

  517. but do we pursue our work

  518. and pursue our health

  519. and pursue our relationships

  520. in order to display

  521. the glory of God

  522. and out of thankfulness

  523. and love for Him

  524. who created all these things?

  525. Do we joyfully praise God

  526. and freely speak of Him

  527. to others

  528. because we found

  529. such deep satisfaction in Him?

  530. No, for most of us,

  531. if we're honest,

  532. the answer is no.

  533. Or at least,

  534. not consistently.

  535. Maybe we have

  536. occasional bursts

  537. of spiritual intensity.

  538. We pray

  539. and seek God's help

  540. in a time of crisis

  541. followed by long periods

  542. of complacency

  543. when our life

  544. is going

  545. fairly smoothly.

  546. You know,

  547. if we think about

  548. our normal daily routine,

  549. from morning to night,

  550. we often go through it

  551. with little thought

  552. for God.

  553. Right?

  554. And it's hard.

  555. We drag ourselves

  556. out of bed in the morning,

  557. stumble into the shower,

  558. go through the motions,

  559. get ourselves out the door

  560. to work or to class

  561. or start taking care

  562. of the kids.

  563. Our days are busy,

  564. full of work,

  565. full of activity.

  566. If we can,

  567. we include some things

  568. that are pleasurable,

  569. whether it's a nice,

  570. a good cup of coffee,

  571. watching a movie

  572. or a play

  573. or getting together

  574. with some friends.

  575. And then finally,

  576. at the end of the day,

  577. we get into bed

  578. and fall asleep.

  579. And then if we can't

  580. fall asleep right away

  581. or if we wake up

  582. in the middle of the night,

  583. our thoughts range

  584. from all the things

  585. I need to do tomorrow,

  586. anxiety over

  587. difficult relationships,

  588. guilt from past failures,

  589. fear of future disappointments,

  590. frustration at our inability

  591. to get back to sleep

  592. and the prospect

  593. of going through

  594. another day tired.

  595. It's hard.

  596. Even just to live

  597. from day to day,

  598. to just make it.

  599. Then where does God

  600. fit into all this?

  601. Right?

  602. Maybe we want to follow God.

  603. We want Him to be

  604. the center of our life

  605. so we come to church

  606. on Sundays.

  607. Maybe we pray before meals

  608. or go to a small group

  609. in the middle of the week

  610. or spend a few minutes

  611. praying and reading

  612. the Bible in the morning

  613. at some time of day

  614. but still,

  615. if we're honest,

  616. our life is far

  617. from being saturated

  618. with this seeking after God

  619. and being satisfied in Him.

  620. And that picture

  621. that we have in this psalm,

  622. it's sort of like

  623. the picture

  624. of the ultramarathon,

  625. 135 miles

  626. through the middle

  627. of the desert.

  628. That's very admirable

  629. for those 81 people

  630. who could do it.

  631. And that's not something

  632. I am ever going

  633. to try to do.

  634. It just seems

  635. completely impossible

  636. and unrealistic

  637. for me

  638. in my circumstances.

  639. I mean,

  640. do you feel that way?

  641. I feel that way often.

  642. Our passion for God

  643. is like a leaky bucket.

  644. It's constantly losing water

  645. until it gets filled up again.

  646. Well, the good news

  647. is that this psalm

  648. doesn't just give us

  649. a picture

  650. of somebody else

  651. who is seeking God

  652. and being satisfied in Him.

  653. And it doesn't just give us

  654. a standard

  655. to measure ourselves against.

  656. That's what we've seen so far.

  657. A picture

  658. of someone seeking God

  659. and being satisfied in Him.

  660. A standard

  661. to measure ourselves against.

  662. The good news is

  663. this psalm points us

  664. to the resources

  665. that we need

  666. to experience this ourselves.

  667. To seek God

  668. and to be satisfied in Him

  669. on a daily basis.

  670. Now look down

  671. at what David says.

  672. We've looked mostly

  673. at the first half

  674. of the psalm,

  675. verses 1 through 6.

  676. But look down

  677. at what David says

  678. in verses 5 through 7.

  679. He starts by saying,

  680. my soul will be satisfied

  681. as with fat and rich food.

  682. He goes on,

  683. when I remember you

  684. on my bed.

  685. And then in verse 7

  686. he says,

  687. for,

  688. or because,

  689. you have been my help.

  690. In other words,

  691. the reason

  692. that David

  693. is satisfied

  694. in the Lord

  695. is because

  696. God has been

  697. His help

  698. in the past.

  699. And then look down

  700. at verse 8.

  701. David says,

  702. my soul clings to you,

  703. but your right hand

  704. upholds me.

  705. It's a picture

  706. of a fearful child

  707. holding on

  708. to his daddy's side

  709. for dear life.

  710. But his daddy

  711. has his right hand,

  712. his strong arm

  713. around him.

  714. And daddy

  715. will not let

  716. his child go.

  717. He holds him close.

  718. So David said,

  719. God has been

  720. my help in the past

  721. and God upholds me

  722. in the present.

  723. And then verse 9

  724. through 11,

  725. David speaks of

  726. God's promise

  727. for the future.

  728. He says,

  729. those who seek

  730. to destroy my life

  731. will go down

  732. into the depths

  733. of the earth.

  734. But the king

  735. will rejoice in God.

  736. In other words,

  737. David's enemies

  738. who were fighting

  739. against God's purpose

  740. would not have

  741. the last word.

  742. God will surely

  743. be victorious.

  744. So David points us

  745. to these three things

  746. that are the fuel

  747. for a life

  748. of seeking

  749. and being satisfied

  750. in God.

  751. These three things,

  752. God's help in the past,

  753. God's hand in the present,

  754. and God's promise

  755. for the future.

  756. And David experienced

  757. all these things.

  758. But you know,

  759. you and I

  760. can experience

  761. these things

  762. in an even

  763. fuller measure

  764. than David did.

  765. Because

  766. Jesus Christ

  767. came

  768. to give us

  769. these three things

  770. in an even

  771. more profound way

  772. than David

  773. ever could have seen.

  774. In Jesus Christ,

  775. we see

  776. that God has come

  777. to be

  778. our helper.

  779. That He has helped us

  780. in the past.

  781. And the Hebrew word,

  782. and you know,

  783. that doesn't just mean

  784. that He sort of

  785. threw you a few bones

  786. along the way.

  787. You know,

  788. sort of gave you

  789. a few nice things

  790. in life.

  791. But the word helper

  792. in Hebrew

  793. means someone

  794. who comes alongside you,

  795. who joins with you,

  796. who stands by you

  797. with unwavering loyalty,

  798. and does for you

  799. what you could not

  800. do for yourself.

  801. That's why it's described,

  802. used to describe

  803. a marriage partner

  804. in the Old Testament.

  805. as well as

  806. a military ally.

  807. Right?

  808. But the point is,

  809. this is exactly

  810. what Jesus did.

  811. Jesus came

  812. alongside us.

  813. He lived with us

  814. on this earth.

  815. He joined Himself

  816. to us.

  817. He took on

  818. our human nature.

  819. He was tempted

  820. in every way,

  821. just as we are.

  822. And yet,

  823. He never sinned.

  824. And He loved us

  825. and stood by us

  826. with unfailing loyalty.

  827. It says He loved

  828. His disciples

  829. to the end.

  830. Even to the point

  831. of dying

  832. for us on the cross.

  833. Right?

  834. Doing for us

  835. what we could never do

  836. for ourselves.

  837. And when Jesus

  838. died on the cross,

  839. He paid the price

  840. for our sin

  841. so that we might

  842. be forgiven

  843. and free

  844. from condemnation.

  845. Jesus became ours

  846. so that we might

  847. become His.

  848. so that we might

  849. be able to say

  850. God has been

  851. my helper.

  852. He has come

  853. alongside me.

  854. He has joined

  855. Himself to me

  856. in Jesus Christ

  857. and He has done

  858. for me what I could

  859. never do for myself.

  860. And He has stood

  861. by me with

  862. unfailing loyalty.

  863. Like a true

  864. friend.

  865. A true ally.

  866. A true helper.

  867. And when we see

  868. that,

  869. when we see the

  870. price that He paid,

  871. to become

  872. our helper,

  873. we see that it's

  874. so futile

  875. and foolish

  876. to live for ourselves.

  877. It's so empty

  878. to chase after

  879. things in this world

  880. that are just

  881. going to pass away

  882. and crave things

  883. that just satisfy

  884. us for a moment.

  885. And we see that

  886. He is worthy

  887. because He's the one

  888. who has stood by us

  889. more than anyone else.

  890. And so when we see

  891. that, we begin

  892. to have this desire

  893. to live for Him

  894. and to organize

  895. our schedule around Him

  896. and to orient

  897. our life around Him

  898. from early in the

  899. morning until the

  900. middle of the night.

  901. To seek Him

  902. with intensity

  903. and with persistence

  904. because He is

  905. our greatest ally

  906. and He has met

  907. our greatest need.

  908. So in Jesus

  909. we see that God

  910. has been our help

  911. in the past,

  912. but in Jesus

  913. we also see that

  914. God upholds us

  915. in the present.

  916. Through Jesus Christ

  917. we have a Father

  918. in Heaven

  919. who holds us

  920. in His mighty

  921. right hand

  922. and He will not

  923. let us go.

  924. He is holding you

  925. in the midst

  926. of sleepless nights,

  927. in the midst

  928. of oppressive heat,

  929. in the midst

  930. of a cancer diagnosis,

  931. in the midst

  932. of chronic pain,

  933. in the midst

  934. of a mental breakdown,

  935. in the midst

  936. of unemployment,

  937. in the midst

  938. of loneliness,

  939. in the midst

  940. of persecution,

  941. in the midst

  942. of all the other

  943. troubles

  944. that we experience

  945. in this world

  946. and all the deserts

  947. that we have

  948. to walk through.

  949. But Jesus said

  950. to His disciples,

  951. Peace

  952. I leave with you.

  953. My peace

  954. I give to you.

  955. I do not give

  956. to you

  957. as the world gives.

  958. Do not let your hearts

  959. be troubled

  960. and do not be afraid.

  961. Just as David says

  962. in verse 7,

  963. Rest in the shadow

  964. of His wings.

  965. He is holding you

  966. with His mighty

  967. right hand.

  968. In Jesus Christ,

  969. God upholds you

  970. in the present.

  971. And finally,

  972. in Jesus Christ

  973. we have God's promise

  974. for the future

  975. that everyone

  976. and everything

  977. that opposes God

  978. will be overthrown.

  979. That sin

  980. and Satan

  981. and death

  982. will not have

  983. the last word.

  984. We read this earlier

  985. from Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  986. The promise

  987. that one day

  988. we will stand

  989. before the throne

  990. of God

  991. and serve Him

  992. day and night

  993. in the shelter

  994. of His presence.

  995. And on that day

  996. it says

  997. we will hunger

  998. no more

  999. nor thirst

  1000. anymore

  1001. because Jesus,

  1002. the Lamb,

  1003. in the midst

  1004. of the throne,

1005. He will be our shepherd

1006. and He will guide us

  1007. to springs

  1008. of living water

  1009. and God will wipe

  1010. away every tear

  1011. from our eyes.

  1012. can you even imagine

  1013. that God will come

  1014. to you

  1015. that He upholds you

1016. in His mighty right hand

1017. and He'll never let you go

1018. and He'll come to you

  1019. with the tenderness

  1020. of a mother

  1021. wiping the tears

  1022. from her child's face.

  1023. And all our thirst

  1024. and all our longing

  1025. and all our seeking

  1026. after God

  1027. will be one day

  1028. forever satisfied

  1029. in His presence

  1030. and will delight

  1031. in Him

  1032. for all eternity.

1033. This is what we have

  1034. in Jesus Christ

  1035. that gives us

  1036. the fuel

  1037. for a life

  1038. of seeking

  1039. and being satisfied

  1040. in the Lord.

  1041. And today we're

  1042. just about to come

  1043. to the Lord's table

  1044. to celebrate communion.

1045. And as we do that

  1046. we're invited

  1047. to experience

  1048. that future promise

  1049. breaking into

  1050. our present reality.

  1051. So as we prepare

  1052. to eat the bread

1053. and drink the cup together

  1054. we're going to pray

  1055. and ask that Jesus

  1056. would come

  1057. and dwell among us

1058. here by His Holy Spirit

1059. and even lift us up

  1060. into His presence

  1061. so that our souls

  1062. would be satisfied

  1063. and nourished

  1064. and strengthened

  1065. and glad

  1066. and glad.

  1067. Psalm 34 says

  1068. taste and see

  1069. that the Lord

  1070. is good.

  1071. Blessed are all

  1072. who take refuge

  1073. in Him.

  1074. Let's pray.

  1075. O merciful Lord

  1076. we do not come

  1077. to this

  1078. your table

  1079. trusting in our own

  1080. righteousness

  1081. but in your

  1082. abundant

  1083. and great

  1084. mercies.

  1085. Lord we are not

  1086. even worthy

  1087. to eat the crumbs

  1088. under your table

  1089. but you have come.

  1090. You have been

  1091. our help.

  1092. You uphold us

  1093. in the present

1094. and you have given us

  1095. a glorious promise

  1096. for the future.

  1097. You delight

  1098. in showing mercy.

  1099. So grant us

  1100. therefore

  1101. gracious Lord

1102. so to eat this bread

  1103. and drink this cup

  1104. that we may evermore

  1105. dwell in you

  1106. and delight in you

  1107. and desire you.

  1108. For Jesus' sake.

  1109. Amen.
