  1. If you would turn with me in a Bible to Mark chapter 1, we'll be looking at that at the

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  2. end of that chapter tonight.

  3. If you're looking in one of the few Bibles, it is on page 837.

  4. We're looking at Mark chapter 1, starting at verse 40 and going to the end of the chapter.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  5. It says this,

  6. And a leper came to him, came to Jesus, imploring him and kneeling, said to him,

  7. If you will, you can make me clean.

  8. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him,

  9. I will be clean.

  10. And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.

  11. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once and said to him,

  12. See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priests,

  13. and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded for a proof to them.

  14. But he went out and began to talk freely about it and to spread the news so that Jesus could no longer

  15. openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places.

  16. And people were coming to him from every quarter.

  17. A few years ago, the New York Times published an article by a doctor

  18. who works in an intensive care unit at a hospital.

  19. And he began the article by telling this story.

  20. He says,

  21. It was one night when I was on call, I visited a patient who had been in the ICU for nine days,

  22. recovering from a procedure to remove a major blood clot.

  23. She was doing well, breathing on her own, with normal blood pressure and regular heartbeat.

  24. After a moment, she opened her eyes.

  25. Welcome, doctor, she said.

  26. Would you like me to make you a drink?

  27. You know where everything is, she said, and make me one as well.

  28. Well, I asked her where she was.

  29. In my apartment, she said.

  30. I walked up to her IV pole and squeezed the bag of saline that hung next to her bed.

  31. She thanked me and went off to sleep.

  32. The article went on to say about a third of patients who spend more than five days in an ICU

  33. experience some form of psychotic reaction.

  34. Even if they've never had any psychiatric problems before,

  35. patients may experience anxiety, become paranoid, hear voices and see things that are not there,

  36. become disoriented, agitated, or even violent.

  37. Now, of course, doctors want to know why this happens.

  38. Why does being in a hospital seem to create new problems, even as it solves other problems?

  39. Is it a response to physical pain?

  40. Or is it sleep deprivation from the nurses waking you up every hour during the night?

  41. Or is it that you feel like you're no longer in control of your life?

  42. Well, all those things could play a role, but one of the major realities of being in a hospital,

  43. especially being in an ICU, is being isolated.

  44. Being isolated from normal routines and from normal interactions with family and friends,

  45. neighbors, and co-workers.

  46. Now, being in the ICU is maybe an extreme example, but sickness of whatever kind,

  47. whether physical or mental, can be an incredibly isolating experience.

  48. And isolation can drive you crazy.

  49. Now, of course, in some circumstances, isolation is the only way that we know of

  50. that we can deal with sickness and prevent it from spreading.

  51. Right?

  52. At a minor level, that's why my son's preschool sends home a big note that says,

  53. if your child has a fever, or has had a fever in the last 24 hours, or has vomited,

  54. you better not send him to school.

  55. Right?

  56. Right?

  57. And every school and every daycare center has strict rules about that,

  58. because they don't want diseases to spread, or more serious cases.

  59. If you visit certain people in the hospital, you might have to wear a gown,

  60. or even put on a mask, or put on gloves,

  61. so they don't get what you have, and you don't get what they have.

  62. Or for better and for worse, this is why we have psychiatric hospitals,

  63. or institutions to keep people from harming themselves or harming others.

  64. Right?

  65. Normally, sickness is contagious.

  66. Health isn't.

  67. And so we protect against the spread of sickness,

  68. partly by isolating sick people.

  69. Now, in this passage, we see a very sick man, a leper,

  70. a man with a dreaded skin disease.

  71. Now, back then, the word leprosy covered a wide range of skin diseases,

  72. including boils, burns, itches, ringworm, and scalp conditions,

  73. as well as what's now called Hansen's disease,

  74. leprosy that makes you lose feeling in your skin,

  75. and your nerves, and your limbs, and eyes.

  76. It was a horrible disease.

  77. And back then, leprosy was nearly incurable.

  78. It was a common saying among Jewish rabbis that curing a leper

  79. was as difficult as raising a dead man to life.

  80. And in order to prevent the dreaded disease from spreading,

  81. lepers were required to be isolated from the rest of the community.

  82. So Leviticus 13 and 14 give a whole bunch of rules,

  83. but the end of Leviticus 13, starting at verse 45, says this,

  84. the leprous person who has the disease

  85. shall wear torn clothes

  86. and let the hair of his head hang loose,

  87. and he shall cover the lower part of his face

  88. and cry out, unclean, unclean.

  89. He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease.

  90. He is unclean.

  91. He shall live alone.

  92. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.

  93. Did you hear those words?

  94. Four times.

  95. Unclean, unclean, unclean, unclean.

  96. He shall live alone outside.

  97. You see, being a leper didn't just make you sick,

  98. it made you unclean and alone and isolated.

  99. You were cut off from your family,

  100. from your job, from your friends and your neighbors.

  101. You couldn't touch anyone else

  102. or even come close to them

  103. because otherwise you would make them unclean.

  104. So the only family, the only friends,

  105. the only neighbors that you really had

  106. were other people who had the same disease.

  107. Other unclean lepers.

  108. And you couldn't go into a city.

  109. You couldn't go into any city with walls.

  110. And so you had to live out in the unprotected countryside.

  111. You could only attend the worship services in the synagogue

  112. if they had a screen and a separate seating area

  113. to separate you from everyone else.

  114. It was an incredibly isolating experience.

  115. It was a little bit like having AIDS in the 1970s or 1980s

  116. when it was just beginning to spread

  117. and before antiviral drugs were available.

  118. Or maybe a parallel today would be

  119. being homeless and sleeping on a bench on the green.

  120. Or even under a bridge

  121. and getting up in the morning

  122. and pushing a shopping cart down the street

  123. and hunting in other people's trash cans

  124. for bottles and cans.

  125. And everybody steps carefully around you

  126. because they don't want to touch you.

  127. Because in their eyes, you're dirty.

  128. And you would make them unclean.

  129. That's a little bit of what it was like

  130. to be a leper.

  131. To be unclean.

  132. Now the leper in this story, he's a desperate man.

  133. And so because he's desperate, he takes a risk.

  134. He approaches Jesus.

  135. And he pleads for help.

  136. Now according to the law,

  137. he wasn't supposed to come close to anyone else.

  138. So he's taking a risk in even coming close to Jesus

  139. and kneeling before him.

  140. And he says, if you will, you can make me clean.

  141. The leper sees something different in Jesus

  142. that draws him to come close.

  143. And in this passage, we see two extraordinary things

  144. about Jesus.

  145. We see Jesus' extraordinary authority

  146. and we see Jesus' extraordinary compassion.

  147. So first, Jesus' extraordinary authority.

  148. Verses 41 and 42, it says,

  149. Jesus was moved with pity or moved with compassion.

  150. And he stretched out his hand and touched him

  151. and said to him,

  152. I will be clean.

  153. And immediately the leprosy left him

  154. and he was made clean.

  155. Now do you notice Jesus deliberately stretched out his hand

  156. and touched the man with leprosy?

  157. According to the law,

  158. if you touched an unclean person,

  159. that made you unclean.

  160. And if you became unclean,

  161. you had to go through a whole process

  162. of ritual cleansing,

  163. of separating yourself from other people

  164. and then bathing and going through this whole process

  165. in order for you to become clean again.

  166. Because again, just like today,

  167. normally sickness and uncleanness spreads.

  168. Health doesn't.

  169. Right?

  170. If you're unclean, you're contagious.

  171. You might make somebody else unclean.

  172. If you're healthy,

  173. you're not going to make somebody else healthy

  174. just by touching them.

  175. But here, the effect is reversed.

  176. When Jesus touches the leper,

  177. instead of Jesus becoming unclean,

  178. the leper becomes clean.

  179. And if you were here last week,

  180. we saw in this passage

  181. that Jesus has this extraordinary authority,

  182. this unequal power,

  183. so that his touch overrides

  184. and overrules this horrible skin disease.

  185. And his will trumps

  186. the Old Testament ceremonial law.

  187. That Jesus has this amazing authority.

  188. Now, according to the Old Testament,

  189. the priests who served in the temple

  190. had the responsibility to examine people

  191. with skin disease

  192. and pronounce them either clean or unclean.

  193. They were a little bit like the doctors

  194. in those days.

  195. But you know,

  196. Jesus doesn't merely act like a doctor here.

  197. Jesus doesn't say,

  198. hey, come here,

  199. let me examine you.

  200. Hmm, do I see any white spots?

  201. No, I don't see any white spots.

  202. Ah, you're okay.

  203. No.

  204. Jesus doesn't just pronounce him clean.

  205. Jesus touches him and makes him clean.

  206. He does what the priests could never do.

  207. And that's why he says

  208. what he says in verse 43 and 44.

  209. Now, maybe that was a little confusing

  210. when we first read it.

  211. You might think,

  212. well, why does Jesus say,

  213. don't tell nothing to nobody?

  214. It's actually a double negative in the Greek,

  215. so you can translate it however you want.

  216. The point is,

  217. he says,

  218. don't say anything to anyone.

  219. I say,

  220. well, why would Jesus want him

  221. to keep it to himself?

  222. Well,

  223. the main reason is what he continues,

  224. what he says in the rest of the verse.

  225. Go,

  226. show yourself to the priest.

  227. Right?

  228. You had to,

  229. you had to get a clean bill of health

  230. from the priest

  231. so you could

  232. be declared clean

  233. and interact normally

  234. with other people again

  235. without making them unclean.

  236. And as part of the process,

  237. you'd offer a sacrifice

  238. to thank God

  239. for making you well

  240. if somehow you recovered

  241. from one of these skin diseases.

  242. So basically,

  243. Jesus is saying,

  244. I want you to go through

  245. the official legal channels

  246. so that you can be publicly declared clean

  247. and restored to your place in society.

  248. But he also says,

  249. at the end of verse 44,

  250. he says,

  251. do this for a proof to them.

  252. It's a legal word,

  253. proof or testimony.

  254. In other words,

  255. to demonstrate Jesus' authority

  256. authority to the priests

  257. and the religious leaders

  258. of the day

  259. so they could see

  260. that this man

  261. was living proof

  262. that Jesus could do

  263. what nobody else could.

  264. So he says,

  265. go to the priests

  266. so they can see

  267. that I've done for you

  268. what nobody else can.

  269. So they can examine you themselves

  270. and they can have living proof

  271. right in front of them

  272. that I can do

  273. what nobody else can.

  274. So that's the first thing we see,

  275. Jesus' extraordinary authority

  276. to cleanse this man

  277. where nobody else could.

  278. But we also see a second thing.

  279. We see Jesus' extraordinary compassion.

  280. He not only cleanses the leper

  281. where nobody else could,

  282. he cleanses the leper

  283. in a way that nobody else would.

  284. Now verse 41,

  285. it says Jesus was moved with pity.

  286. Now when we hear that word pity,

  287. sometimes we think something like this.

  288. We think of maybe watching on the news

  289. or hearing a really sad story

  290. or looking down at somebody else

  291. and thinking,

  292. and we say,

  293. oh, that's so sad.

  294. We make a sad face

  295. and maybe we just say sad things

  296. for a few minutes.

  297. And then we get distracted

  298. and then we go on with our life

  299. and we don't really do anything different.

  300. And we think,

  301. oh, I felt pity.

  302. I felt so bad for that awful thing that happened.

  303. Well, that's actually not

  304. what true pity or compassion is in the Bible.

  305. The English word compassion

  306. is from a Latin word

  307. that means to suffer with someone.

  308. And the Greek word in this passage

  309. refers to the,

  310. it's a word that refers to

  311. the inner parts of a person.

  312. Literally the inner parts of your chest,

  313. your gut,

  314. your heart,

  315. your lungs.

  316. In other words,

  317. compassion

  318. is this deep feeling of mercy

  319. towards somebody else

  320. from deep inside you.

  321. But it's not just a feeling,

  322. it's a feeling

  323. that results in action.

  324. You see,

  325. that's why Jesus touches the man.

  326. He doesn't just feel pity for the man

  327. and think,

  328. oh, what a,

  329. what a sad story.

  330. But he reaches out and touches him.

  331. Now,

  332. Jesus didn't have to touch him

  333. in order to make him well.

  334. There's a story in the Old Testament,

  335. probably the most famous story

  336. in the Old Testament

  337. of a leper being cleansed

  338. is found in 2 Kings chapter 5.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  339. And Naaman,

  340. who is a commander,

  341. who is an army commander in Syria,

  342. goes to the prophet Elisha in Israel

  343. and asks to be cleansed of his leprosy.

  344. And Elisha

  345. doesn't even come out of his house.

  346. He sends a messenger

  347. to say,

  348. Naaman,

  349. go dunk yourself in the river

  350. seven times.

  351. Naaman doesn't like that idea,

  352. but eventually he

  353. is persuaded by somebody else

  354. that he should

  355. at least try,

  356. you know,

  357. at least do what the prophet says.

  358. So he does it,

  359. and by the grace of God,

  360. he gets cleansed.

  361. But Elisha never touched him.

  362. Jesus didn't have to touch him.

  363. Actually,

  364. in Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  365. there's ten other lepers

  366. that Jesus cleanses,

  367. and he doesn't touch them at all.

  368. So why does he touch him?

  369. Think about it.

  370. If you were that leper,

  371. for as long as you've had leprosy,

  372. nobody else has touched you.

  373. Because nobody else wants to touch you

  374. because they'll become unclean.

  375. And the only other people

  376. who might have touched you

  377. were other people

  378. who had the same disease.

  379. And Jesus touched him

  380. to make a personal connection with him.

  381. That it wasn't just

  382. blessings from a distance,

  383. but it was blessings through

  384. a touch.

  385. But you know what?

  386. There was a cost

  387. to Jesus touching him.

  388. And we don't,

  389. you know,

  390. you might not see this

  391. when you first read the passage,

  392. but look down at verse 44 and 45.

  393. Verse 44,

  394. Jesus tells the leper,

  395. keep quiet

  396. and go right to the priest.

  397. But in verse 45,

  398. the leper goes around

  399. broadcasting the news.

  400. He's talking freely,

  401. or literally,

  402. the word is preaching.

  403. It's the same word

  404. that's used for Jesus,

  405. preaching his message.

  406. The leper goes around

  407. preaching about it.

  408. Telling everybody.

  409. And we have no idea

  410. if he ever went to the priest or not.

  411. And then it says,

  412. as a result,

  413. Jesus could no longer

  414. openly enter a town,

  415. but was out

  416. in desolate places.

  417. At the beginning of this story,

  418. the leper

  419. is on the outside.

  420. He can't enter a town.

  421. He can't touch anyone.

  422. He can't participate

  423. normally in society.

  424. He's on the outside,

  425. and he's unclean.

  426. And Jesus is on the inside.

  427. But at the end of the story,

  428. it's reversed.

  429. The leper's on the inside.

  430. He's going everywhere.

  431. He's clean.

  432. He can touch anyone.

  433. He's healed.

  434. But Jesus is on the outside.

  435. He can't enter a city.

  436. He's in desolate places.

  437. You see,

  438. this whole story,

  439. it's a little story

  440. right at the beginning

  441. of Mark's gospel,

  442. but it's a picture

  443. of the whole purpose

  444. why Jesus came to the world.

  445. The whole purpose

  446. of his life and ministry

  447. is about

  448. his extraordinary authority

  449. to do what nobody else could

  450. and his extraordinary compassion

  451. to do what nobody else would.

  452. And of course,

  453. where does that all lead?

  454. Jesus in the end,

  455. it ultimately leads him

  456. to die on a cross

  457. outside the city walls,

  458. rejected

  459. and alone

  460. and unclean.

  461. So that we,

  462. like the leper,

  463. might be cleansed

  464. and accepted

  465. and received

  466. on the inside

  467. of God's family

  468. now

  469. and forever.

  470. that's what Jesus

  471. came to do.

  472. He came

  473. to demonstrate

  474. his authority

  475. and he came

  476. to touch us

  477. with his compassion

  478. at a great cost

  479. to himself

  480. so that we could be

  481. cleansed

  482. and received.

  483. Now,

  484. what do we take away

  485. from this passage?

  486. Let me give you

  487. two categories

  488. of applications.

  489. Maybe we can talk

  490. about these

  491. a little more

  492. when we have

  493. our question

  494. and answer time

  495. in a few minutes.

  496. Maybe you can identify

  497. first,

  498. maybe you can identify

  499. with this leper.

  500. Now,

  501. maybe you have

  502. an illness,

  503. whether it's

  504. a physical illness

  505. or emotional

  506. or some other

  507. kind of illness

  508. and because of

  509. your illness,

  510. you've lived

  511. for years

  512. in isolation

  513. and you've always

  514. felt excluded

  515. on the outside.

  516. Maybe you've

  517. looked everywhere

  518. for a cure

  519. and found none

  520. or maybe you've

  521. given up

  522. and you just

  523. hang your head.

  524. Or maybe it's not

  525. a physical illness,

  526. maybe you feel

  527. dirty on the inside

  528. because of shameful

  529. things that other

  530. people have done

  531. to you in the past

  532. and you feel like

  533. damaged goods,

  534. too broken

  535. to ever be useful

  536. again.

  537. or maybe you feel

  538. dirty because of

  539. shameful things

  540. that you've done

  541. to yourself

  542. or to other people.

  543. And even if nobody

  544. else knows the whole

  545. story,

  546. you know that on the

  547. inside you're a mess

  548. and you deal with

  549. the shame

  550. and guilt

  551. of your own

  552. failure before God

  553. in the past

  554. and even

  555. daily

  556. in the present.

  557. If any of those

  558. describe you,

  559. let me invite you.

  560. Come before

  561. Jesus

  562. like the leper

  563. did.

  564. He came to Jesus.

  565. He said,

  566. Jesus,

  567. if you will,

  568. you can make me

  569. clean.

  570. Jesus has the power

  571. to make you clean

  572. like nobody else

  573. can.

  574. And Jesus

  575. did

  576. what was required

  577. to make you

  578. clean

  579. like nobody else

  580. would.

  581. You know,

  582. one of the biggest

  583. lies in the world

  584. is that you have

  585. to clean yourself

  586. up

  587. before you come

  588. to God,

  589. before you come

  590. to church.

  591. And the truth

  592. is exactly the

  593. opposite.

  594. You need to come

  595. to Jesus

  596. so that He

  597. can clean you

  598. up.

  599. And you'll find

  600. Jesus here

  601. in the church.

  602. Not in this

  603. building,

  604. but when believers

  605. gather together.

  606. Jesus is present

  607. here with us

  608. to cleanse us

  609. and heal us.

  610. And you know,

  611. in reality,

  612. every single

  613. one of us

  614. is like this

  615. leper

  616. before God.

  617. Before God,

  618. we're all

  619. unclean.

  620. In the Bible,

  621. it says,

  622. all our righteous

  623. deeds are like

  624. filthy,

  625. blood-stained

  626. rags.

  627. So what's the

  628. church?

  629. The church is a

  630. bunch of

  631. desperate

  632. lepers

  633. who found

  634. cleansing

  635. in Jesus.

  636. So whoever

  637. you are,

  638. whatever you

  639. look like on

  640. the outside,

  641. and whatever

  642. you feel on

  643. the inside,

  644. you're not

  645. any different

  646. from all the

  647. rest of us

  648. when we stand

  649. before God.

  650. to all of

  651. us.

  652. Jesus invites

  653. all of us

  654. to come

  655. to Him

  656. as you

  657. are.

  658. Maybe

  659. come to

  660. Him for

  661. the first

  662. time.

  663. Or maybe

  664. come to

  665. Him for

  666. a renewed

  667. experience

  668. of His

  669. mercy

  670. and His

  671. cleansing.

  672. So that's

  673. the first

  674. thing.

  675. Maybe you

  676. identify with

  677. the leper.

  678. We all

  679. identify with

  680. the leper.

  681. Maybe,

  682. second thing,

  683. maybe you

  684. identify

  685. as a

  686. follower of

  687. Jesus,

  688. as a

  689. disciple of

  690. Jesus.

  691. As we've

  692. said,

  693. the church

  694. is a

  695. community

  696. of people

  697. like this

  698. leper,

  699. who are

  700. spiritually

  701. unclean,

  702. and excluded

  703. from God's

  704. family,

  705. who have

  706. been brought

  707. in by the

  708. authority and

  709. compassion of

  710. Jesus Christ.

  711. But you

  712. know,

  713. we're also

  714. called to be

  715. a community

  716. that extends

  717. Jesus'

  718. compassion and

  719. proclaims Jesus'

  720. authority in

  721. the world.

  722. So what

  723. does that

  724. look like?

  725. Well,

  726. it looks like

  727. being a

  728. community where

  729. we don't

  730. ignore or

  731. avoid people

  732. when they

  733. get sick

  734. or weak,

  735. but instead

  736. reach out to

  737. them and

  738. touch them and

  739. connect with

  740. them.

  741. A few weeks

  742. ago, I had

  743. the chance to

  744. visit a lady

  745. named Miss

  746. Frances.

  747. Miss Frances

  748. is an elderly

  749. member of this

  750. church.

  751. Many of you

  752. won't know her

  753. because she

  754. hasn't been able

  755. to come to

  756. church regularly

  757. for a few

  758. years.

  759. She's lost

  760. most of her

  761. short-term

  762. memory, and

  763. she lives in

  764. a care facility

  765. full-time.

  766. When I arrived

  767. to visit her,

  768. she recognized

  769. me because

  770. I've been in

  771. this church for

  772. long enough that

  773. she remembered

  774. me, and we

  775. were walking

  776. towards where

  777. we were going

  778. to sit down,

  779. and she said

  780. to somebody

  781. else, one of

  782. the staff at

  783. the place,

  784. she said,

  785. see, my

  786. church hasn't

  787. forgotten me.

  788. Now, you know,

  789. she wasn't just

  790. talking about me

  791. because I've only

  792. been to visit her

  793. once or twice in

  794. the last year,

  795. but there are

  796. one or two or

  797. more people from

  798. this church who

  799. have taken it

  800. upon themselves to

  801. visit her regularly,

  802. and she remembers

  803. who they are.

  804. Even though she's

  805. lost most of her

  806. short-term memory,

  807. she remembers the

  808. people from church

  809. who've come to

  810. visit her, and she

  811. said to me, my

  812. church hasn't

  813. forgotten me, and

  814. it's a sign to her

  815. and to everybody

  816. else around her

  817. that Jesus hasn't

  818. forgotten her.

  819. Right?

  820. Now, sometimes we

  821. do this well, and

  822. sometimes we don't

  823. do this well, but

  824. this is part of what

  825. it looks like.

  826. A community where we

  827. reach out and

  828. connect with people

  829. when they're sick

  830. or weak.

  831. And second, a

  832. community that

  833. extends Jesus'

  834. compassionate touch

  835. to outsiders.

  836. believers.

  837. This leper was an

  838. outsider back in

  839. the day.

  840. He was somebody

  841. that most religious

  842. people didn't want

  843. to deal with, because

  844. it was too messy, and

  845. too complicated, and

  846. too time-consuming, and

  847. seemingly hopeless from

  848. a human point of view,

  849. but he's exactly the

  850. kind of person that

  851. Jesus touched.

  852. And so as followers of

  853. Jesus, we're called to

  854. touch others, to

  855. engage with people

  856. who are broken,

  857. needy, dirty, smelly,

  858. rejected, alone, sick,

  859. in the hospital, have

  860. complicated issues, and

  861. are spiritual outsiders.

  862. Now, there's a cost to

  863. doing that.

  864. Right?

  865. It costs time, and

  866. energy, and money.

  867. Sometimes you get funny

  868. looks from people.

  869. They say, why are you

  870. hanging out with them?

  871. Why did you invite them

  872. to come along with us

  873. when we were just going

  874. to hang out?

  875. Right?

  876. That's what Jesus did.

  877. He invited us to come

  878. and be with him when we

  879. didn't deserve to.

  880. Now, we can't do

  881. everything.

  882. We can't touch every

  883. single, lonely, isolated

  884. person in this city.

  885. We don't have the power

  886. to fix people.

  887. Only Jesus does.

  888. Sometimes people aren't

  889. willing to be made

  890. clean.

  891. But, you know, we know

  892. Jesus.

  893. He has the only cure

  894. that really works.

  895. And so, let's extend

  896. his compassionate touch

  897. so that other people

  898. might experience that,

  899. his cleansing,

  900. and being received into

  901. his family, just as

  902. each one of us have,

  903. who have put our trust

  904. in him.

  905. Let's pray.

  906. Lord Jesus, we praise

  907. you for your authority.

  908. Lord, your power.

  909. Lord, that you could

  910. touch that man.

  911. That you can touch

  912. people today and make

  913. us clean.

  914. Lord, not only physically

  915. on the outside,

  916. but spiritually

  917. on the inside.

  918. Lord Jesus, we thank

  919. you for your compassion.

  920. That you have paid the

  921. price on the cross.

  922. That we might be

  923. cleansed of all our

  924. sin and guilt.

  925. That we might be

  926. received into your

  927. family.

  928. As people who belong

  929. to you.

  930. And are loved and

  931. known by you.

  932. Lord, we pray that we

  933. would, each of us,

  934. recognize that we are

  935. no different than this

  936. leper when we stand

  937. before you.

  938. And we pray that

  939. because we realize

  940. that, and because we

  941. have experienced

  942. your saving grace,

  943. Lord, that we would

  944. extend your touch

  945. to others.

  946. We pray this in your

  947. name.

  948. Amen.
