  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Just want to add to Pastor Greg's announcement as the children's ministry.

  3. If you are a member and you'd like to come to the meeting on Thursday, we will provide

  4. childcare.

  5. So please, if that is a barrier to you thinking about coming, please do plan on coming and

  6. join us for the meal beforehand, and then there will be someone to watch your kids during

  7. the meeting.

  8. And also, there are agendas on the back table.

  9. If you are a member and would like to know more particularly what we're talking about,

  10. that is available for you, I believe.

  11. Is that right, Esther?

  12. So if you want those, they're on the back table.

  13. One of the fun things about being a father is watching your son grow up.

  14. My son Eli is five, almost five.

  15. He'll be five in two weeks.

  16. And he's at a really, really fun stage of life.

  17. When I ask him to help with something, he just lights up.

  18. He stands up straighter.

  19. His chest kind of puffs out a little bit.

  20. And he will literally run around the house getting the things that he thinks we need.

  21. Some of it's useful.

  22. Some of it's not.

  23. But getting the things that he thinks that we need to do the task at hand.

  24. And it is really fun to see him as he finds a place in my world, in our world, where he

  25. can help, where he can contribute.

  26. He loves it.

  27. And it just fills him with pride and fills him with a joy.

  28. And it energizes his life.

  29. And I was reflecting on it this week because I was thinking, I don't know how many of us,

  30. myself included, feel this way every day.

  31. We don't describe our day-to-day life as this great opportunity to jump into good works,

  32. to help the world, and to do something profitable.

  33. Instead, what do we do?

  34. Well, often we call it the daily grind.

  35. Whatever are the tasks at hand, what do we need to get through today?

  36. Whether it's laundry and wiping noses.

  37. Whether it's assignments and preparing for exams or writing papers.

  38. Whether it's projects at work, getting the to-do list done for your boss.

  39. Whether it's all the activities that fill your day.

  40. Often these things are not seen as these great opportunities.

  41. But instead, they're a daily grind.

  42. We think, how do we get through this one?

  43. And then how do we get through the next one?

  44. And how do we get through the next one?

  45. And deep in our hearts, we ask ourselves a question.

  46. Is this what we were created for?

  47. Is there anything greater?

  48. Is there anything more than this?

  49. One of my favorite poets slash songwriters in the last 15 years,

  50. and this is going to date me for some of you,

  51. but if you're familiar with the band Switchfoot,

  52. wrote a great song.

  53. It's probably their breakout song.

  54. This is partly what they wrote in this song.

  55. Fumbling his confidence and wondering why the world has passed him by.

  56. Hoping that he's bent for more than arguments and failed attempts to fly.

  57. Dreaming about providence and whether mice and men have second tries.

  58. Maybe we've been living with our eyes half open.

  59. Maybe we're bent and broken.

  60. We were meant to live for so much more.

  61. Have we lost ourselves?

  62. And I wonder if you feel that way today.

  63. I wonder if you feel, as you wake up each morning,

  64. is this all that I've been made for?

  65. And you know, sometimes we don't feel that way.

  66. Sometimes we wake up in the morning and we just think,

  67. what a great day.

  68. I can't wait for all the things.

  69. But as I was reflecting on it,

  70. it seems that this question arises more commonly in particular circumstances.

  71. Sometimes it's when we've reached the top.

  72. When we've accomplished all the things we wanted to accomplish.

  73. When we've won the Super Bowl.

  74. When we've done all the things.

  75. When we've finally gotten married.

  76. Whatever the thing is that we've set our hearts on it

  77. and gone through all the work to do.

  78. And then we think, is this all?

  79. Is this all there is?

  80. On the other hand, on the other end of the spectrum,

  81. there are times when we ask the question

  82. when we feel like we are getting crushed under the heel of life.

  83. Where every day is simply an attempt to survive.

  84. To try to get through to the next day.

  85. And not be totally overcome.

  86. And overwhelmed.

  87. By the tasks of life.

  88. Often we think, is this all?

  89. And thirdly,

  90. I think there are times when we ask this question

  91. when what we're working for will be very costly.

  92. When continuing to pursue the thing that we're grinding out for

  93. suddenly will cost us a lot.

  94. And we ask, is this worth it?

  95. Is this what I was made for?

  96. Is it worth continuing on this track?

  97. This career track?

  98. Is it worth pressing through in this relationship?

  99. Is it, well you can't really get out of parenting.

  100. You're kind of stuck there.

  101. But when it's really costly.

  102. These are the times when these questions rise up in our mind.

  103. And I think when we ask this question,

  104. when we feel this existential angst,

  105. I think there are two things that we can do.

  106. There are two ways that we respond.

  107. One is that we run,

  108. we try to anesthetize our hearts

  109. from the fearful reality of asking that question.

  110. We run to little things to give us a little pleasure,

  111. a little distraction,

  112. a little entertainment,

  113. a little something

  114. to avoid the pain of facing a life

  115. where we're asking,

  116. is this really worth it?

  117. Or, the second thing is,

  118. we take up the charge of the existentialists of the 20th century

  119. who said,

  120. there is no meaning out there.

  121. Don't even try to find it.

  122. The only meaning is what you make of it.

  123. And so we set ourselves to the task

  124. of making our lives meaningful.

  125. And we become driven,

  126. purposeful people.

  127. But we're desperately trying to infuse our life

  128. with a meaning,

  129. with a purpose,

  130. with a grandeur,

  131. all on our own.

  132. And yet I would posit to you

  133. that neither of these strategies ultimately work.

  134. And they leave us with the same question.

  135. Were we made for something more?

  136. We made for something more than this.

  137. And this is the question

  138. to which our passage speaks this morning.

  139. We are continuing our series in the book of Hebrews.

  140. If you want to turn in your pew Bible,

  141. page 1001.

  142. We're going to look at Hebrews chapter 2 this morning.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  143. We're going to look at this passage

  144. and we're going to remember what it is

  145. that God has said to us about this question.

  146. And just to remind you of a little bit of the context

  147. as you're looking there,

  148. chapter 1 of Hebrews was all about

  149. Jesus the Exalted One.

  150. Jesus who is the final and the best Word of God.

  151. Jesus who has come

  152. and who has given a greater and a fuller revelation

  153. than that of the angels.

  154. In fact, the angels are simply ministering spirits.

  155. But Jesus is the final Word.

  156. Jesus is the One who has come.

  157. And God has spoken to us

  158. so that we know who God is through Jesus.

  159. And then, the beginning of chapter 2,

  160. verses 1 through 4,

  161. Nick last week talked about how

  162. woven into this argument about the Exalted Jesus

  163. is then this grave warning.

  164. So if Jesus is that great,

  165. oh friends, let us be careful

  166. that we do not drift away

  167. from such a great work of salvation

  168. that this Jesus has worked for us.

  169. And then, starting in verse 5 of chapter 2,

  170. which is what we're going to read in just a minute,

  171. he dives back into the argument.

  172. But he's not starting a brand new argument,

  173. nor is he continuing the same argument.

  174. But he has a second movement in this argument

  175. about Jesus and how he relates

  176. to God and to angels and to creation.

  177. And in this section, particularly,

  178. how he relates to humanity.

  179. So let's look together.

  180. Hebrews chapter 2, verses 5 through 9.

    Hebrews 2:5–9

  181. Let's read it together.

  182. Now, in putting everything in subjection to him,

  183. he left nothing outside his control.

  184. At present, we do not yet see everything

  185. in subjection to him,

  186. but we see him who, for a little while,

  187. was made lower than the angels,

  188. namely Jesus,

  189. crowned with glory and honor

  190. because of the suffering of death,

  191. so that by the grace of God,

  192. he might taste death for everyone.

  193. Let's pray together.

  194. God, we thank you for your word.

  195. We thank you that in it,

  196. you have shown us who Jesus is,

  197. your best and final word.

  198. And God, I pray this morning

  199. that you would lead us and help us

  200. as we look at it this morning.

  201. God, I pray for your spirit to help me

  202. that the words I speak might be useful.

  203. Lord, that you would apply your word to our hearts.

  204. Lord, that we might see what a glorious Savior Jesus is.

  205. And we pray in his precious name.

  206. Amen.

  207. Amen.

  208. So as we look at this argument,

  209. I don't know what your first reaction to it was.

  210. When I first looked at this passage

  211. as I started preparing a little while ago was,

  212. okay, this is not obvious what this is all about.

  213. So let me try and walk you through the argument.

  214. And as we walk you through the argument,

  215. we're going to see what a precious thing

  216. this word gives us.

  217. And we're going to see three things in this argument.

  218. The first thing is we're going to see

  219. God's plan for humanity

  220. in verses five through eight.

  221. And then at the very end of verse eight,

  222. we're going to see the second thing,

  223. which is the problem for humanity.

  224. And then in verse nine,

  225. we will see God's provision for humanity.

  226. So we're going to see God's plan,

  227. the problem, and God's provision for humanity.

  228. So first, let's look at verses five through eight

  229. and the plan for humanity.

  230. And you know what?

  231. This is the answer to the question

  232. that I raised at the beginning.

  233. What were we made for?

  234. In verses five through eight,

  235. the author is saying Jesus

  236. is connected with humanity

  237. and God has a unique plan for humanity.

  238. This is what he means in verse five,

  239. where he starts off the argument,

  240. for it was not to angels

  241. that God subjected the world to come.

  242. He's picking up the arguments from before, okay?

  243. He's been talking about the angels

  244. and particularly if you look back,

  245. verse 14 of chapter one,

  246. who are the angels?

  247. The angels are not the last word,

  248. but the angels are ministering spirits

  249. for the sake of who?

  250. For the sake of those who will inherit salvation.

  251. That is human beings,

  252. you and me and all of humanity.

  253. And so he's picking up that argument again

  254. and he's saying,

  255. do you remember?

  256. It's not to angels that he subjected the world,

  257. but to humanity.

  258. And that's the argument at the beginning of verse five.

  259. And he's saying that the world

  260. that's being subjected to humanity

  261. is not this world now,

  262. but it's the world to come.

  263. That is, it's the world

  264. when Jesus' reign is fully established,

  265. humanity will be the ones

  266. who will rule over it.

  267. Now, why do I say this?

  268. Well, the author gives us a reason.

  269. He goes back and he quotes Psalm 8,

  270. which was read to us earlier this morning.

  271. And he looks at Psalm 8 and he says,

  272. what is man that you are mindful of him

  273. or the son of man that you care for him?

  274. You made him for a little while,

  275. lower than the angels.

  276. You've crowned him with glory and honor,

  277. putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  278. And if you remember the Psalm and the glory of it,

  279. the psalmist was writing as he stood there

  280. and he looked at the heavens

  281. and he looked at the glory of God's creation

  282. and he felt so small.

  283. And maybe you felt that too.

  284. When you go to the Grand Canyon

  285. or an incredibly beautiful place,

  286. when you go to the ocean

  287. and watch the immensity of the waves,

  288. when you go to the mountains

  289. and you see how great and immovable they are,

  290. you feel small.

  291. And yet the psalmist is saying,

  292. God, you've made such a great creation.

  293. Who am I?

  294. What is my place in it?

  295. And yet you have actually given me

  296. the greatest place

  297. because though you made me a little lower

  298. than the angels,

  299. yet you've crowned me with glory

  300. and you have made it so that

  301. everything will be under my feet.

  302. And the psalmist there is pulling on

  303. a number of different traditions.

  304. One of the traditions is that

  305. or understandings in the Old Testament times.

  306. One is that it was the angels

  307. who have dominion over this present world.

  308. This was a common view,

  309. both at the time of the psalmist

  310. and in the first century,

  311. where the angels were sort of the ruling spirits

  312. over this world,

  313. over this present age.

  314. It's saying,

  315. so humanity was made lower than them for a season.

  316. And yet,

  317. and yet that's not the ultimate goal.

  318. In fact,

  319. going back to Genesis 1,

  320. going back to the very beginning

  321. of the story,

  322. the psalmist is recalling that

  323. God has given humanity

  324. dominion over all the earth,

  325. male and female.

  326. He gave them stewardship

  327. over all of creation,

  328. all the living things,

  329. all of the physical world.

  330. And though,

  331. and we'll explore this more in a few minutes,

  332. though this has been abused greatly,

  333. yet there is an original dignity

  334. and rightness

  335. in what it is that God is doing.

  336. And so he says,

  337. what is man

  338. that you've made,

  339. that you're mindful of him,

  340. or the son of man

  341. that you would care for him?

  342. And the son of man there,

  343. I don't think actually refers to Jesus.

  344. It's kind of easy to jump there.

  345. But I think based on Hebrew parallelism

  346. and just the way

  347. that Old Testament writers wrote,

  348. it's simply saying,

  349. it's another way of saying,

  350. what is man?

  351. What is mankind,

  352. humanity,

  353. that is being referred to

  354. in that verse?

  355. And so the psalmist

  356. is saying,

  357. God, you have done an amazing thing.

  358. I am little in your creation,

  359. but you have given me

  360. this incredible purpose

  361. of having dominion,

  362. that everything will be put

  363. under my control

  364. as I live,

  365. and this is the original intent,

  366. as I live under you,

  367. God,

  368. this is the place that I have

  369. in your creation

  370. and your world.

  371. And this is what he says

  372. as he goes on

  373. in verse 8,

  374. the first part,

  375. right?

  376. He says,

  377. now I'm putting everything

  378. into subjection to him.

  379. He left nothing

  380. outside of his control.

  381. Not even the angels.

  382. The angels will ultimately

  383. be under human rulership

  384. as the humans rule

  385. under God

  386. over creation.

  387. And this is the argument.

  388. And I think it's unbelievable

  389. for us.

  390. One,

  391. we're very democratic.

  392. We don't like kings.

  393. We don't like people

  394. who rule over us.

  395. And we're uncomfortable

  396. with the thought

  397. that we might actually

  398. have to play that role ourselves.

  399. And so we have

  400. a cultural barrier

  401. against wanting to be,

  402. having a place

  403. of ruling or reigning

  404. over others.

  405. We just feel

  406. uncomfortable with it.

  407. And so we have

  408. but the psalmist says,

  409. no,

  410. this is actually

  411. your human destiny.

  412. This is your created purpose

  413. that God has given to you.

  414. Have you ever thought

  415. about the Chronicles of Narnia

  416. in light of this?

  417. The Chronicles of Narnia,

  418. for those of you who don't know,

  419. is a great series

  420. of children's books

  421. by C.S. Lewis.

  422. And the first one

  423. tells the story

  424. of these four children,

  425. the Pivensies,

  426. who are off on holiday

  427. at their,

  428. at a large house

  429. and they get transported

  430. into a new world.

  431. And you know,

  432. in their normal world,

  433. they're just everyday people.

  434. But you know

  435. what happens to them?

  436. When they're transported

  437. into the world,

  438. they find out

  439. that they are in fact

  440. kings and queens.

  441. And as they learn

  442. about this world

  443. and as they understand

  444. this world more,

  445. they know,

  446. they come to realize

  447. that they have

  448. this incredible world

  449. that they've been given

  450. to rule over

  451. and to care for

  452. under the great rule

  453. of the emperor

  454. over the sea

  455. and his son,

  456. Aslan the lion,

  457. who sacrificially saves

  458. the land

  459. by his own death.

  460. It's a great allegory.

  461. If you haven't read it,

  462. definitely do it.

  463. But the picture there

  464. of these ordinary kids

  465. who are transported

  466. into a world

  467. where they in fact

  468. are kings and queens.

  469. This is, in fact,

  470. true of us.

  471. This is what God intends

  472. for you and me.

  473. Under God,

  474. for all eternity,

  475. this is what

  476. we were created for.

  477. Think about what

  478. that must have meant

  479. to the recipients

  480. of this letter.

  481. We've talked about

  482. the fact that

  483. the people

  484. who received this letter

  485. seemed to be facing

  486. some kind of persecution,

  487. some kind of difficulty.

  488. In fact,

  489. the pressure was so great

  490. that there were people

  491. who were turning away

  492. from Jesus

  493. and saying,

  494. No, Jesus,

  495. that's not,

  496. I'm not going to

  497. continue to believe

  498. in Jesus

  499. because it cost me

  500. too much.

  501. They're facing

  502. that third crisis

  503. that I talked about earlier,

  504. about what am I here for?

  505. And they're turning away

  506. from Jesus

  507. in the midst of it.

  508. And if we read it right,

  509. and if that pressure

  510. is coming significantly

  511. from Roman persecution,

  512. what good news

  513. would it be

  514. that you,

  515. though you may be killed

  516. by the Roman emperor,

  517. you are going to reign

  518. forever with Jesus?

  519. What good news

  520. would that be?

  521. It would be pretty great,

  522. wouldn't it?

  523. It would be pretty exciting.

  524. We'll come back

  525. to that thought

  526. in a little while.

  527. Let me give one application

  528. for this

  529. that is actually an aside.

  530. But as I was reflecting

  531. on this truth this week,

  532. it occurred to me

  533. that we actually struggle

  534. with this idea

  535. of humans reigning

  536. over the world

  537. for another reason too.

  538. In a post-Darwinian world,

  539. we have an assumption,

  540. we have a thought

  541. that human beings

  542. are simply the top

  543. of the animal chain

  544. and we are simply

  545. one more step

  546. in an evolutionary process.

  547. And friends,

  548. this passage tells us

  549. that though it is true

  550. that we are a part

  551. of the created order,

  552. just like the animals,

  553. we are in fact,

  554. according to the Bible,

  555. distinct from

  556. the animal world.

  557. we have a dignity

  558. and a purpose

  559. that is not the same

  560. as that for dolphins

  561. and dogs

  562. and butterflies.

  563. They have their own place

  564. in reflecting God's glory

  565. and we have a stewardship

  566. and a responsibility

  567. to this creation

  568. under God

  569. to care for it

  570. in a way that we have

  571. and always.

  572. But friends,

  573. we are distinct

  574. and that has all sorts

  575. of implications.

  576. That has implications

  577. for unborn children.

  578. It has implications

  579. for the elderly.

  580. It has implications

  581. for stewardship

  582. of the environment.

  583. We need to think

  584. about this

  585. and to recognize

  586. that Psalm 8

  587. and the argument

  588. of the Hebrews

  589. up to this point

  590. is saying human beings

  591. have this unique destiny

  592. and purpose

  593. to rule under God

  594. over the world.

  595. What is humanity

  596. made a little lower

  597. than the angels

  598. but crowned with glory

  599. and given dominion

  600. over all creation?

  601. What a glorious thing

  602. it is.

  603. And yet,

  604. and one of the reasons

  605. why you're sitting there

  606. looking at me

  607. and not standing up

  608. and clapping

  609. and shouting

  610. at how wonderful it is

  611. is because of the end

  612. of verse 8.

  613. Because there's a problem

  614. isn't there?

  615. The problem is

  616. that this glorious purpose

  617. that's laid out

  618. is so far

  619. from our imaginations

  620. to know what that

  621. actually looks like

  622. because we don't see it now

  623. do we?

  624. Look with me

  625. the end of verse 8

  626. at present

  627. we do not yet

  628. see everything

  629. in subjection

  630. to Him.

  631. And this is right

  632. isn't it?

  633. You look around

  634. in our world

  635. and what do we see?

  636. We see a mix.

  637. We see humanity

  638. sometimes doing great things.

  639. There are moments

  640. of heroism.

  641. There's progress

  642. in medicine.

  643. There's growth

  644. in civilization.

  645. There's progress

  646. in creativity

  647. and in the arts.

  648. There's all sorts

  649. of things

  650. that

  651. where we are seeing

  652. some good signs

  653. and yet

  654. and yet

  655. how much

  656. are we in fact

  657. not

  658. over

  659. the creation.

  660. How much

  661. do we see

  662. is outside

  663. of control

  664. and in fact

  665. what we see

  666. is not order

  667. but chaos.

  668. Our natural world

  669. is beyond

  670. our ken.

  671. Our natural world

  672. is beyond

  673. our control

  674. and we continue

  675. to be reminded

  676. of it

  677. as we're

  678. in our modern world

  679. continue to think

  680. that we actually

  681. can control it

  682. and then we get

  683. another forest fire

  684. another tsunami

  685. another hurricane

  686. another blizzard

  687. another thing

  688. that just reminds me

  689. that no

  690. this is not yet true.

  691. And it's not just

  692. in the natural world

  693. is it

  694. it's in our own

  695. personal life too.

  696. We don't do

  697. what we want to do

  698. all the time

  699. do we?

  700. We don't even have

  701. control over

  702. being able to accomplish

  703. the things that we set

  704. to accomplish.

  705. We find our emotional

  706. life beyond

  707. our control

  708. at times.

  709. We find our

  710. moral compass

  711. unable

  712. to give us

  713. the strength

  714. to actually be

  715. the righteous people

  716. that we're meant

  717. to be.

  718. And we see it

  719. in relationships

  720. and we see it

  721. in civilizations

  722. and societies.

  723. This world

  724. is not under

  725. the control

  726. of humanity

  727. or when it is

  728. humanity is

  729. abusing that power

  730. and destroying

  731. rather than building.

  732. And the greatest

  733. way that we see

  734. this

  735. is actually

  736. in

  737. the one thing

  738. that no one

  739. ever

  740. has been able

  741. to conquer

  742. and that is

  743. death.

  744. Do you notice

  745. he picked that up

  746. at the end?

  747. We'll get to

  748. why he did.

  749. But one of the

  750. things that we do

  751. see is that

  752. death

  753. has control

  754. over us.

  755. Because no matter

  756. what progress

  757. we've made

  758. in medicine

  759. no matter

  760. what good

  761. things we've

  762. been able

  763. to do

  764. and nutrition

  765. and living

  766. well

  767. and all of

  768. that

  769. we still

  770. die.

  771. Everyone

  772. will die.

  773. Everyone

  774. will face

  775. that

  776. ultimate

  777. eternity.

  778. and it

  779. reminds us

  780. it reminds

  781. us

  782. that

  783. in

  784. Genesis 1

  785. that's not

  786. the way

  787. it was

  788. supposed to

  789. be

  790. and yet

  791. now

  792. it is

  793. inevitably

  794. that way

  795. and it

  796. will not

  797. be otherwise

  798. and we've

  799. been trying

  800. for thousands

  801. of years

  802. as humans

  803. to figure

  804. out how

  805. to overcome

  806. it.

  807. We haven't

  808. yet

  809. and you

  810. know what

  811. we never

  812. will.

  813. We never

  814. will.

  815. death

  816. came into

  817. the world

  818. because of

  819. human sin

  820. and rebellion.

  821. Remember how

  822. I said

  823. that the

  824. framework

  825. was

  826. humanity

  827. over creation

  828. under God?

  829. Most of you

  830. probably know

  831. the storyline

  832. but in

  833. Genesis 3

  834. humanity

  835. said we

  836. don't want

  837. to live

  838. under God.

  839. We want

  840. to be

  841. our own

  842. gods.

  843. We want

  844. to take

  845. a dominion

  846. that is

  847. not ours

  848. and to

  849. try to

  850. replace

  851. God

  852. with

  853. ourselves

  854. and in

  855. that

  856. rebellion

  857. everything

  858. was broken.

  859. Relationships

  860. were broken,

  861. relationship

  862. with God,

  863. relationship

  864. with one

  865. another,

  866. relationship

  867. with creation.

  868. All of

  869. those things

  870. were broken

  871. because of

  872. human sin

  873. that is

  874. rebellion

  875. against God,

  876. refusing to

  877. honor God

  878. and acknowledge

  879. him for

  880. what he's

  881. supposed to

  882. be.

  883. and so

  884. death

  885. came into

  886. the world

  887. as a

  888. right

  889. judgment

  890. against

  891. a

  892. rebellion

  893. against

  894. the giver

  895. of life.

  896. When we

  897. rebelled

  898. against the

  899. one who

  900. gave us

  901. life,

  902. he said

  903. the punishment

  904. will be

  905. death.

  906. And so

  907. the whole

  908. world

  909. is under

  910. this dynamic

  911. and so

  912. this

  913. God-given

  914. purpose

  915. for humanity

  916. that everything

  917. would be

  918. under him

  919. is in fact

  920. not true

  921. at all

  922. because we

  923. all die.

  924. None of

  925. us will be

  926. able to

  927. reign

  928. forever.

  929. None of

  930. us will

  931. be able

  932. to do

  933. that.

  934. And so

  935. we live

  936. in this

  937. tension,

  938. don't we?

  939. We live

  940. in the

  941. tension

  942. that we

  943. were meant

  944. for this

  945. destiny,

  946. this

  947. dignity

  948. of being

  949. under God

  950. over the

  951. world and

  952. yet now

  953. we cannot

  954. do it.

  955. We are

  956. incapable

  957. of doing

  958. it.

  959. Friends,

  960. just as an

  961. aside,

  962. this is one

  963. of the

  964. most encouraging

  965. things to

  966. me about

  967. the Bible

  968. is that it

  969. actually deals

  970. with reality

  971. because we

  972. live every

  973. day with

  974. this longing

  975. for something

  976. that cannot

  977. be.

  978. And these

  979. verses right

  980. here describe

  981. why we feel

  982. that way.

  983. Because we

  984. were created

  985. for something

  986. but sin

  987. has entered

  988. the world

  989. and it has

  990. entered our

  991. hearts and

  992. so we

  993. cannot do

  994. it,

  995. we cannot

  996. achieve the

  997. things that

  998. we long

  999. we cannot

  1000. get to

  1001. the ideals

  1002. that we

  1003. can imagine

  1004. because God

  1005. has placed

  1006. that imagination

  1007. into our

  1008. hearts but

  1009. our sin

  1010. has crippled

  1011. us.

  1012. And so

  1013. we do not

  1014. see the

  1015. world as it

  1016. ought to be.

  1017. We do not

  1018. see the

  1019. world in

  1020. subjection.

  1021. But friends,

  1022. this is the

  1023. good news that

  1024. the writer to

  1025. the Hebrews

  1026. wants to give

  1027. to us is

  1028. that that's

  1029. not the

  1030. last word,

  1031. is it?

  1032. because in

  1033. the end

  1034. of verse

  1035. 8 he

  1036. says,

  1037. we see

  1038. the world

  1039. not in

  1040. subjection.

  1041. But what

  1042. do we

  1043. see?

  1044. We don't

  1045. see the

  1046. world as

  1047. it should

  1048. be,

  1049. but what

  1050. do we

  1051. see?

  1052. Look with

  1053. me at

  1054. verse 9.

  1055. Let's read

  1056. it again

  1057. together.

  1058. But we

  1059. see him

  1060. who for

  1061. a little

  1062. while was

  1063. made lower

  1064. than the

  1065. angels,

  1066. namely Jesus,

  1067. crowned with

  1068. glory and

  1069. honor because

  1070. of the

  1071. suffering of

  1072. death,

  1073. so that by

  1074. the grace

  1075. of God he

  1076. might taste

  1077. death for

  1078. everyone.

  1079. Oh,

  1080. friends,

  1081. what good

  1082. news this

  1083. is.

  1084. We see

  1085. him,

  1086. namely

  1087. Jesus,

  1088. and what

  1089. is it

  1090. particularly

  1091. that he

  1092. says about

  1093. Jesus?

  1094. Jesus is

  1095. two things

  1096. at the

  1097. same time.

  1098. Jesus is

  1099. made lower

  1100. than the

  1101. angels and

  1102. yet crowned

  1103. with glory.

  1104. What does

  1105. that mean?

  1106. Chapter 1

  1107. is talked

  1108. about the

  1109. exalted

  1110. Jesus who

  1111. is over all

  1112. and who reigns

  1113. over all,

  1114. who is called

  1115. the Son,

  1116. who has

  1117. this exalted

  1118. place in

  1119. God's kingdom.

  1120. But now we

  1121. see Jesus

  1122. not simply

  1123. in his

  1124. exalted

  1125. place,

  1126. but also

  1127. in his

  1128. place of

  1129. humbling

  1130. himself and

  1131. coming and

  1132. identifying with

  1133. humanity.

  1134. Jesus came

  1135. to restore

  1136. what was

  1137. broken,

  1138. to restore

  1139. the fallen

  1140. humanity.

  1141. And in

  1142. order to

  1143. do that,

  1144. he must

  1145. become human.

  1146. He had

  1147. to join

  1148. with us

  1149. in being

  1150. made lower

  1151. than the

  1152. angel.

  1153. And so

  1154. the word,

  1155. the second

  1156. person of

  1157. the trinity,

  1158. of the

  1159. Godhead,

  1160. who existed

  1161. from eternity,

  1162. took on

  1163. human flesh.

  1164. He became

  1165. a human

  1166. being.

  1167. And so

  1168. this God

  1169. man,

  1170. Jesus,

  1171. identified

  1172. with us.

  1173. And as

  1174. he identified

  1175. with us,

  1176. he then

  1177. captured a

  1178. glory that

  1179. was beyond

  1180. all imagination.

  1181. salvation.

  1182. Think about

  1183. it,

  1184. friends.

  1185. If you

  1186. were the

  1187. creator of

  1188. the world

  1189. and you

  1190. were going

  1191. to come

  1192. and rescue

  1193. your world,

  1194. how would

  1195. you come?

  1196. On a

  1197. white horse,

  1198. crowned with

  1199. glory,

  1200. with armies

  1201. of angels

  1202. at your

  1203. back,

  1204. sweeping over

  1205. the world,

  1206. executing justice

  1207. and righteousness,

  1208. lifting up the

  1209. downtrodden,

  1210. casting down the

  1211. proud and the

  1212. arrogant,

  1213. making all

  1214. things right

  1215. and new,

  1216. wouldn't that

  1217. have looked

  1218. great.

  1219. But instead,

  1220. we see

  1221. Jesus,

  1222. who has a

  1223. greater plan

  1224. by identifying

  1225. with us

  1226. and then

  1227. being crowned

  1228. with glory

  1229. because of,

  1230. did you see

  1231. that phrase

  1232. in there?

  1233. Because of

  1234. the suffering

  1235. of death.

  1236. So not only

  1237. did Jesus

  1238. identify with

  1239. us by

  1240. becoming a

  1241. human,

  1242. but then

  1243. having lived

  1244. a perfect

  1245. life where

  1246. there was

  1247. no sin,

  1248. we'll see

  1249. that later

  1250. in Hebrews

  1251. if you're

  1252. wondering,

  1253. there was

  1254. no sin

  1255. in his

  1256. life,

  1257. he then

  1258. was able

  1259. to step

  1260. in and

  1261. be a

  1262. substitute

  1263. for all

  1264. of humanity.

  1265. So just

  1266. as the

  1267. first Adam

  1268. failed and

  1269. rejected God,

  1270. he comes

  1271. as the

  1272. second Adam

  1273. to live

  1274. the perfectly

  1275. obedient life

  1276. and to

  1277. restore that

  1278. which was

  1279. broken in

  1280. the first

  1281. place.

  1282. and so

  1283. he enters

  1284. in not

  1285. just to

  1286. humanity,

  1287. but he

  1288. enters into

  1289. the penalty

  1290. upon humanity,

  1291. the judgment

  1292. upon humanity

  1293. by death.

  1294. death.

  1295. And so

  1296. he suffered

  1297. death on

  1298. the cross

  1299. for us.

  1300. So that,

  1301. you see the

  1302. last phrase

  1303. in there?

  1304. So that

  1305. by the

  1306. grace of

  1307. God,

  1308. that is,

  1309. the free

  1310. undeserved

  1311. gift of

  1312. God to

  1313. the human

  1314. race,

  1315. he might

  1316. taste death

  1317. for everyone.

  1318. That is,

  1319. everyone without

  1320. distinction,

  1321. everyone who

  1322. comes to

  1323. him,

  1324. he dies.

  1325. Friends,

  1326. this is

  1327. great news.

  1328. He came

  1329. to be a

  1330. human being

  1331. like us

  1332. so that we

  1333. could become

  1334. a human being

  1335. like him.

  1336. That is,

  1337. he came

  1338. and he

  1339. walked the

  1340. earth and

  1341. he died

  1342. on the

  1343. cross and

  1344. he rose

  1345. again so

  1346. that we

  1347. too,

  1348. by faith

  1349. in him,

  1350. might also

  1351. die to

  1352. sin and

  1353. be raised

  1354. to new

  1355. life with

  1356. him.

  1357. Jesus is

  1358. the one

  1359. who's promised

  1360. in chapter

  1361. 1 verse

  1362. 13 that

  1363. all things

  1364. will be

  1365. put under

  1366. his feet.

  1367. Do you

  1368. see it?

  1369. Look with

  1370. me.

  1371. Sit at

  1372. my right

  1373. hand until

  1374. I make

  1375. your enemies

  1376. a footstool

  1377. for your

  1378. feet.

  1379. Jesus is

  1380. going to

  1381. come and

  1382. everything

  1383. will sit

  1384. under him.

  1385. But that's

  1386. not enough

  1387. for God's

  1388. great glory

  1389. and plan

  1390. because he

  1391. wants you

  1392. and me

  1393. to be with

  1394. God in

  1395. that.

  1396. And so

  1397. Jesus comes

  1398. and he

  1399. becomes a

  1400. human being

  1401. and dies

  1402. on the

  1403. cross and

  1404. rises from

  1405. the dead

  1406. so that

  1407. we,

  1408. friends,

  1409. may be

  1410. caught up

  1411. with him.

  1412. So that

  1413. we might

  1414. be restored

  1415. to that

  1416. place of

  1417. reigning

  1418. with him.

  1419. And this

  1420. is scattered

  1421. throughout the

  1422. New Testament.

  1423. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6:1

  1424. 6 verses

  1425. 1 and 2

  1426. rebukes the

  1427. Corinthian church

  1428. saying,

  1429. don't you

  1430. know that

  1431. you will

  1432. judge the

  1433. angels?

  1434. that you

  1435. will judge

  1436. the world?

  1437. This is

  1438. God's plan

  1439. for us.

  1440. Jesus is

  1441. the, as we

  1442. will see

  1443. later, the

  1444. author and

  1445. the pioneer

  1446. of our

  1447. salvation.

  1448. That is, he's

  1449. the one who

  1450. wrote it from

  1451. the very

  1452. beginning, but

  1453. he's also the

  1454. first one to

  1455. do it.

  1456. He's the

  1457. first one to

  1458. go through

  1459. death and

  1460. rise from

  1461. the dead so

  1462. that we might

  1463. be caught up

  1464. in his

  1465. train as

  1466. he, the

  1467. king, rises

  1468. from the

  1469. grave to

  1470. take his

  1471. place, a

  1472. crown with

  1473. glory and

  1474. honor.

  1475. We are

  1476. caught up

  1477. with him.

  1478. We are in

  1479. the procession,

  1480. the royal

  1481. procession, and

  1482. when he sits

  1483. down for all

  1484. who are in

  1485. him, we sit

  1486. down with

  1487. him and

  1488. reign with

  1489. him.

  1490. Friends, what

  1491. does this mean

  1492. for us?

  1493. Well, first

  1494. of all, it

  1495. means that

  1496. only in

  1497. Jesus will

  1498. we find

  1499. the thing

  1500. that our

  1501. hearts are

  1502. longing for.

  1503. When we

  1504. think, when

  1505. we get that

  1506. gnawing feeling

  1507. of, isn't

  1508. there something

  1509. more to

  1510. life?

  1511. This passage

  1512. says, yes,

  1513. there is.

  1514. You were

  1515. made to

  1516. reign with

  1517. Christ over

  1518. the world in

  1519. all eternity,

  1520. and this is

  1521. your hope, but

  1522. also this is

  1523. your focus,

  1524. because we

  1525. will only do

  1526. it in Jesus.

  1527. And so to

  1528. know Jesus, to

  1529. believe in

  1530. him, to

  1531. trust in

  1532. him, to

  1533. love him, to

  1534. have fellowship

  1535. with him, is

  1536. your greatest

  1537. purpose in

  1538. this world.

  1539. Remember, to

  1540. the Hebrews, that

  1541. meant that as

  1542. they looked to

  1543. Jesus, it

  1544. didn't matter if

  1545. Caesar won.

  1546. And to you, it

  1547. doesn't matter how

  1548. grinding the

  1549. grind is.

  1550. it also doesn't

  1551. matter how

  1552. successful or

  1553. how unsuccessful

  1554. your strategies

  1555. are of trying

  1556. to infuse

  1557. your life with

  1558. meaning on your

  1559. own.

  1560. Because all of

  1561. those things are

  1562. nothing compared to

  1563. what it will mean

  1564. for you to be

  1565. caught up in

  1566. Jesus and in

  1567. his reign.

  1568. they don't

  1569. have the last

  1570. word.

  1571. He frees you

  1572. from the despair

  1573. of wondering if

  1574. there's anything in

  1575. this life worth

  1576. worthwhile.

  1577. He frees you from

  1578. the performance of

  1579. trying to do it

  1580. yourself.

  1581. If you'll forgive

  1582. me a Disney

  1583. reference, the

  1584. Lion King, spoiler

  1585. alert, I'm going to

  1586. tell you the end.

  1587. It's been out for

  1588. a while.

  1589. I'm not feeling

  1590. bad about it.

  1591. So you know the

  1592. story.

  1593. Simba, the young

  1594. princeling, is born

  1595. to Mufasa, the

  1596. king of all the

  1597. animals.

  1598. Mufasa dies and

  1599. in the story,

  1600. Simba is exiled

  1601. by his uncle in

  1602. shame thinking that

  1603. he had caused

  1604. the fault.

  1605. And so he lives

  1606. in this exile for

  1607. years.

  1608. And then one

  1609. night, he has a

  1610. vision.

  1611. He has a vision

  1612. of his father.

  1613. And his father

  1614. looks at him.

  1615. He says, you are

  1616. my son.

  1617. You are the king.

  1618. And the

  1619. remembering of this

  1620. identity and the

  1621. remembering of this

  1622. reality gives to

  1623. Simba the courage

  1624. to stop living in

  1625. exile and to

  1626. pursue his

  1627. rightful place as

  1628. the king over all.

  1629. God.

1630. Just like my son, Eli, I

  1631. have the privilege of

  1632. seeing it just a

  1633. little bit.

  1634. When I give him a

1635. purpose and a role and

1636. a dignity, you see him

  1637. just fill up because

1638. that's what he so longs

  1639. to do.

1640. And it's because he was

1641. made to be a child of

1642. God as well and to

  1643. ultimately hear from his

  1644. heavenly father.

  1645. I have bestowed upon

  1646. you a great dignity.

  1647. I have made you a

  1648. little lower than the

  1649. angels.

1650. But I have crowned you

1651. with glory and I will

  1652. put everything under

  1653. your feet.

  1654. And that will be

  1655. yours in Jesus.

1656. And so to us and to

  1657. the Hebrews, let us

  1658. hold fast to this

  1659. Jesus.

1660. Let us not turn away

1661. for no one else can

  1662. give us this royal

  1663. identity.

1664. No one else can give

  1665. us this great purpose.

  1666. Only him.

  1667. Let's pray.

  1668. God, we speak of

  1669. things that are greater

  1670. than our imagination.

1671. Lord, will you by your

  1672. spirit open our hearts

  1673. that we might take

  1674. hold of the great

  1675. promise, Lord, the

  1676. great destiny that you

1677. have for us as your

  1678. people.

1679. And Lord, may we see

1680. that it is only in

  1681. Jesus, only under him

1682. and in him that we

  1683. find this great gift,

  1684. this grace that you

  1685. have given to us.

1686. God, we pray today that

  1687. you would capture our

  1688. lives with this purpose.

1689. We pray these things in

  1690. Jesus' name.

  1691. Amen.
