  1. Flip to the end and you'll find it.

  2. There you go, Revelation 21 and 22.

  3. But let me encourage you to turn there, actually,

  4. because I want us to be able to see some of the riches that are here for us.

  5. You know, I think it's pretty common that as another year ends,

  6. we're all taking stock of where we've come

  7. and perhaps where we're headed in the year to come.

  8. And I think this is a time when we sort of look over the last year

  9. and we start thinking about the story of our life

  10. and where that story is headed.

  11. But, you know, I think it's very easy as we consider our own stories

  12. and the different paths that our life takes,

  13. it's very easy to lose sight of where the greater story is headed,

  14. the story that God is bringing about in history,

  15. and the story that all of us are a part of,

  16. whether we realize it or not.

  17. This is the story that the Bible tells.

  18. After all, the Bible isn't primarily a book of rules, right?

  19. There are a lot of rules there.

  20. There are a lot of commands that tell us how life works best.

  21. But at its core, that's not primarily what the Bible is.

  22. The Bible is actually essentially a grand narrative,

  23. the true story of the world,

  24. and more importantly of the God who made the world

  25. and where he's taking us.

  26. And of course it matters greatly how the story ends, doesn't it?

  27. I mean in the here and now, right?

  28. That the future actually shapes our present, doesn't it?

  29. At least what we know about the future.

  30. We did a lot of driving over the last week.

  31. It got me thinking about driving in the car.

  32. And you know there's a big difference, right,

  33. between driving in your car on the way to a Christmas party

  34. or on the way to a New Year's Eve party, right,

  35. or driving to the dentist.

  36. There's a qualitative difference in your experience of that journey

  37. depending on what your destination is.

  38. One's typically pretty joyful,

  39. the other is typically fairly dreadful.

  40. Sorry, Jonathan.

  41. But it goes deeper than that, doesn't it?

  42. Knowing how the story ends changes

  43. not just our sort of experience in the here and now,

  44. but the meaning of the here and now.

  45. When you know that Romeo and Juliet both end up dying in the end,

  46. sorry for the spoiler alert if you haven't read that one,

  47. then the whole story, even the funny parts,

  48. get colored by tragedy.

  49. And vice versa.

  50. When you know that there's a grand resolution

  51. of the parts,

  52. then even the tragic parts sort of have a different shade

  53. and a different color, don't they?

  54. In other words, the future helps us

  55. to actually understand rightly the present.

  56. I think today as Christians,

  57. we don't think enough about the future

  58. that God has in store for us.

  59. I think perhaps we've become too timid,

  60. maybe thinking that if we talk too much about our hope,

  61. people will just think that Christianity is

  62. pie in the sky,

  63. by and by,

  64. an opiate for the masses,

  65. with no teeth to really change here and now.

  66. I think sometimes we get so anxious to affirm

  67. that Christianity is about more

  68. than just going to heaven when we die,

  69. that we've stopped talking about our hope altogether,

  70. including the really good news

  71. that we actually go to heaven when we die, Christ.

  72. But you know, again and again,

  73. the New Testament calls us

  74. to dwell upon our hope.

  75. In Ephesians 1, Paul prays this great prayer

  76. that the eyes of our hearts

  77. would be enlightened,

  78. that we would know,

  79. really know,

  80. deep in our bones,

  81. in an experiential way,

  82. the hope to which God has called us.

  83. I wonder if much of our difficulty

  84. in living the Christian life here and now

  85. is because we don't know,

  86. really know,

  87. where Christ is taking us.

  88. After all, right,

  89. the Bible tells us to be people of love,

  90. and joy,

  91. and patience,

  92. and kindness,

  93. and generosity,

  94. and faithfulness.

  95. But most of the time,

  96. we think we're on our way to the dentist,

  97. as opposed to on our way

  98. to the party.

  99. And no one's very loving

  100. and joyful

  101. when they're on their way to the dentist.

  102. But you know,

  103. the apostles in the early church

  104. understood this dynamic.

  105. They weren't ashamed to talk

  106. time and time again

  107. and to celebrate the future

  108. that Christ had won for His people.

  109. They knew that our hope

  110. wasn't just the grid

  111. through which we could understand the present,

  112. but that our hope

  113. was also the fuel

  114. to help us live

  115. rightly in the present.

  116. So with all that being said,

  117. let's look then

  118. at our hope.

  119. The hope that God has in store for us

  120. as His people.

  121. Turn with me to Revelation 21.

  122. Look down there with me.

  123. We're not going to read

  124. all of these two chapters,

  125. just some selections.

  126. Let me read this for us.

  127. John writes this.

  128. He says,

  129. Then I saw a new heaven

  130. and a new earth.

  131. This is the beginning of 21.

  132. For the first heaven

  133. and the first earth

  134. had passed away

  135. and the sea was no more.

  136. And I saw the holy city,

  137. New Jerusalem,

  138. coming down out of heaven

  139. from God,

  140. prepared as a bride,

  141. adorned for her husband.

  142. And I heard a loud voice

  143. from the throne saying,

  144. Behold,

  145. the dwelling place of God

  146. is with man.

  147. He will dwell with them

  148. and they will be His people

  149. and God Himself

  150. will be with them

  151. as their God.

  152. He will wipe away

  153. every tear from their eyes

  154. and death shall be no more.

  155. Neither shall there be mourning

  156. nor crying nor pain anymore

  157. for the former things

  158. have passed away.

  159. And He who is seated

  160. on the throne said,

  161. Behold,

  162. I'm making all things new.

  163. Skip down to verse 22.

  164. And I saw no temple

  165. in the city

  166. for its temple

  167. is the Lord God

  168. the Almighty

  169. and the Lamb.

  170. And the city

  171. has no need of sun

  172. or moon to shine on it

  173. for the glory of God

  174. gives its light

  175. and its lamp

  176. is the Lamb.

  177. By its light

  178. will the nations walk

  179. and the kings of the earth

  180. will bring their glory

  181. into it

  182. and its gates

  183. will never be shut by day

  184. and there will be

  185. no night there

  186. and they will bring into it

  187. the glory and honor

  188. of the nations

  189. but nothing unclean

  190. will ever enter it

  191. nor anyone who does

  192. what is detestable

  193. or false.

  194. But only those

  195. who are written

  196. in the Lamb's book of life.

  197. Then the angel

  198. showed me the river

  199. of the water of life

  200. bright as crystal

  201. flowing from the throne

  202. of God and of the Lamb

  203. through the middle

  204. of the street of the city

  205. and also on either side

  206. of the river

  207. the tree of life

  208. with its twelve kinds of fruit

  209. yielding its fruit

  210. each month

  211. the leaves of the tree

  212. were for the healing

  213. of the nations.

  214. No longer will there be

  215. anything accursed

  216. but the throne of God

  217. and of the Lamb

  218. will be in it

  219. and His servants

  220. will worship Him.

  221. They will see His face

  222. and His name

  223. will be on their foreheads

  224. and night will be no more.

  225. They will need no light

  226. of lamp or sun

  227. for the Lord God

  228. will be their light

  229. and they will reign

  230. forever

  231. and ever.

  232. So what does this

  233. stunning picture

  234. of our future

  235. tell us about life

  236. here and now?

  237. A lot more than we could

  238. cover in one sitting

  239. but for now

  240. let me just point to

  241. three things

  242. as we think about

  243. this passage.

  244. And the first is this

  245. because of how

  246. this story ends

  247. because of how

  248. your and my story ends

  249. we can know

  250. first that the tears

  251. of this life

  252. are temporary.

  253. One of the first things

  254. we're told

  255. about the new heaven

  256. and the new earth

  257. is what's not there

  258. right?

  259. Verse 21

  260. chapter 21

  261. verse 1

  262. He says

  263. and the sea

  264. was no more.

  265. Now I admit

  266. that's a pretty strange

  267. detail at first

  268. right?

  269. For us

  270. the sea

  271. is where we go

  272. for vacation

  273. and if you're like me

  274. you get there

  275. and you go

  276. and you get a sunburn

  277. and it's not really

  278. that much fun

  279. but my wife likes it

  280. so we go.

  281. What's so bad

  282. about the sea?

  283. We have to realize

  284. that in the Bible

  285. the sea

  286. the ocean

  287. is often an image

  288. of chaos

  289. and danger.

  290. The ancient Israelites

  291. were not a seafaring people.

  292. In fact

  293. whenever they needed

  294. to cross a body of water

  295. God parts it for them

  296. and they go across

  297. on dry land.

  298. Did you realize that?

  299. So what John

  300. is saying here

  301. in a symbolic way

  302. is that the confusion

  303. and sorrows

  304. and tears

  305. of this life

  306. the oceans

  307. of it

  308. that we have known

  309. on that day

  310. will at last

  311. be done away with.

  312. As he says

  313. in verse 5

  314. God

  315. will make

  316. all things

  317. new.

  318. And then there's

  319. this incredibly

  320. intimate image

  321. in verse 4

  322. He will wipe away

  323. every tear

  324. from their eyes.

  325. Every tear.

  326. every tear

  327. of loneliness

  328. every tear

  329. of regret

  330. every tear

  331. of grief

  332. and loss

  333. everyone

  334. He says.

  335. The tears

  336. everyone has seen

  337. and the tears

  338. no one has seen

  339. and the tears

  340. you didn't even

  341. remember

  342. and the tears

  343. you never could forget

  344. everyone

  345. wiped away.

  346. Isn't it incredible

  347. that the first

  348. thing

  349. God does

  350. when we're

  351. in His presence

  352. in the new heaven

  353. and the new earth

  354. is this.

  355. If you know

  356. the book of Revelation

  357. you know that

  358. at this point

  359. in the book

  360. God has judged

  361. the world

  362. and renewed

  363. the cosmos

  364. and descended

  365. into the midst

  366. of His people

  367. and what does

  368. this almighty

  369. sovereign

  370. God

  371. do?

  372. He comes

  373. like a gentle

  374. father

  375. and begins

  376. wiping the tears

  377. away from His people.

  378. You see friends

  379. there will come

  380. a day

  381. when our sorrows

  382. cease.

  383. He'll wipe

  384. them away.

  385. When death

  386. shall be no more

  387. when pain

  388. is a thing

  389. of the past

  390. our tears

  391. in this life

  392. are temporary.

  393. And I think

  394. that means

  395. two things

  396. for us

  397. in the here

  398. and now.

  399. If the tears

  400. are temporary

  401. and that means

  402. we can face

  403. them now

  404. with courage.

  405. Right?

  406. When pain

  407. and sorrows

  408. come

  409. when grief

  410. and loss

  411. come

  412. as the

  413. inevitable

  414. do

  415. we can

  416. know

  417. that it's

  418. not going

  419. to be

  420. this way

  421. forever.

  422. That it's

  423. not the last

  424. word.

  425. That God

  426. isn't going

  427. to forget.

  428. That like a

  429. father He will

  430. one day

  431. wipe them

  432. all away.

  433. The psalmist

  434. says

  435. though the

  436. sorrows

  437. last

  438. for the

  439. night

  440. joy

  441. comes

  442. in the

  443. morning.

  444. And that

  445. gives us

  446. great courage

  447. to face

  448. our sorrows.

  449. But it also

  450. means I think

  451. a second

  452. deeper thing.

  453. As we look

  454. at the new

  455. heavens and the

  456. new earth

  457. and as we

  458. see that our

  459. tears are

  460. temporary

  461. it means

  462. that right

  463. now we

  464. can trust

  465. Him

  466. in the

  467. pain.

  468. After all

  469. there isn't

  470. a single

  471. tear that

  472. God permits

  473. in our

  474. lives that

  475. He won't

  476. on that

  477. day

  478. personally

  479. wipe away.

  480. You know

  481. it helps to

  482. realize that

  483. the book

  484. of Revelation

  485. was originally

  486. written to

  487. a group of

  488. churches

  489. not who

  490. were you

  491. know holding

  492. prophecy

  493. conferences and

  494. speculating about

  495. the last

  496. times right.

  497. The book

  498. of Revelation

  499. was written

  500. to a group

  501. of churches

  502. that were

  503. suffering.

  504. And as

  505. John tells

  506. them they're

  507. about to

  508. undergo a lot

  509. more in

  510. the days

  511. ahead.

  512. You see

  513. the message

  514. of Revelation

  515. is a message

  516. for sufferers

  517. for the

  518. afflicted

  519. for the

  520. persecuted

  521. and the

  522. weary.

  523. And in

  524. the whole

  525. book

  526. if you were

  527. to sum

  528. it up

  529. God

  530. basically

  531. says

  532. trust

  533. me

  534. I'm

  535. still

  536. in

  537. control

  538. and I

  539. haven't

  540. forgotten

  541. you.

  542. And I'm

  543. bringing

  544. this story

  545. to a

  546. conclusion

  547. so glorious

  548. and so

  549. good

  550. and so

  551. fitting

  552. that every

  553. loss

  554. and every

  555. tear

  556. will be

  557. swallowed

  558. up

  559. in

  560. joy.

  561. It's

  562. just like

  563. Isaiah

  564. said

  565. in our

  566. reading

  567. earlier

  568. he will

  569. swallow

  570. up

  571. death

  572. forever

  573. and the

  574. Lord God

  575. will wipe

  576. away tears

  577. from all

  578. faces.

  579. And Paul

  580. in 1 Corinthians

  581. 15 looking

  582. looking at

  583. that same

  584. passage

  585. in Isaiah

  586. puts it

  587. this way

  588. death

  589. is swallowed

  590. up

  591. in

  592. victory.

  593. Friends

  594. if our

  595. tears

  596. and our

  597. death

  598. are going

  599. to be

  600. swallowed

  601. up

  602. in

  603. victory

  604. then we

  605. can trust

  606. him in

  607. the tears.

  608. He's going

  609. to swallow

  610. them up

  611. and make

  612. them a part

  613. of his

  614. redeemed

  615. new

  616. creation.

  617. And in

  618. the place

  619. of tears

  620. there will

  621. be joy.

  622. And joy

  623. brings us

  624. to the

  625. next point.

  626. The picture

  627. that John

  628. gives us

  629. here of

  630. the new

  631. heavens and

  632. new earth

  633. is important

  634. not just

  635. because of

  636. what's not

  637. there.

  638. There are a lot

  639. of things

  640. that are

  641. not there,

  642. right?

  643. There's no

  644. sea,

  645. there's no

  646. night,

  647. et cetera,

  648. et cetera.

  649. But notice

  650. what is

  651. there.

  652. Because of

  653. how the

  654. story ends

  655. when we

  656. see what

  657. is there

  658. we can

  659. know that

  660. the joys

  661. of this

  662. life are

  663. just a

  664. foretaste

  665. of what's

  666. to come.

  667. Now think

  668. with me

  669. for a second.

  670. Let me

  671. do a

  672. little test.

  673. The average

  674. person's

  675. picture of

  676. heaven,

  677. what is it?

  678. When you

  679. think of

  680. heaven just

  681. right now,

  682. what is it?

  683. I'm going

  684. to read

  685. your mind.

  686. We're all

  687. wearing togas

  688. for some

  689. reason.

  690. We're sitting

  691. on clouds

  692. and we've

  693. all learned

  694. how to

  695. play the

  696. harp.

  697. We're sort

  698. of ethereal

  699. spirits just

  700. kind of

  701. floating in

  702. the heavens,

  703. hanging out,

  704. involved in

  705. some sort

  706. of disembodied

  707. church service.

  708. Ugh.

  709. It's not

  710. very sensory,

  711. it's not

  712. very dynamic,

  713. it's all

  714. kind of,

  715. well,

  716. boring.

  717. But,

  718. when you

  719. read these

  720. chapters,

  721. and when you

  722. read what

  723. else the

  724. Bible has

  725. to say,

  726. about our

  727. future and

  728. our hope,

  729. the picture

  730. couldn't be

  731. more opposite

  732. than that.

  733. That where

  734. we're headed

  735. is not

  736. less sensory,

  737. but more

  738. sensory,

  739. and not

  740. less dynamic,

  741. but more

  742. dynamic,

  743. and not

  744. less real,

  745. but more

  746. real.

  747. If you're

  748. familiar with

  749. C.S.

  750. Lewis' book,

  751. The Great

  752. Divorce,

  753. it's sort

  754. of this

  755. allegory of

  756. the afterlife,

  757. and he

  758. sort of

  759. imagines there

  760. are visitors

  761. to heaven,

  762. and the

  763. visitors to

  764. heaven who

  765. aren't a

  766. part of the

  767. new heavens and

  768. new earth,

  769. as they

  770. step and

  771. as they

  772. walk onto

  773. the fields

  774. of just

  775. the outskirts

  776. of heaven,

  777. the grass

  778. pinches and

  779. hurts their

  780. feet,

  781. because that

  782. world is so

  783. real, so much

  784. more real than

  785. they are,

  786. that even the

  787. grass itself is

  788. like sticks

  789. poking them

  790. through their

  791. shoes.

  792. Of course,

  793. it's just an

  794. image, right?

  795. But it's a

  796. pretty good one.

  797. Let's look at

  798. how John

  799. describes our

  800. future.

  801. In verse

  802. 21-2, we're

  803. told it's a

  804. city, the

  805. new Jerusalem.

  806. So much for

  807. ethereal and

  808. weightless,

  809. right?

  810. Nothing can be

  811. more concrete

  812. and dense

  813. than a city.

  814. And so much

  815. for boring,

  816. too, right?

  817. I mean, no one

  818. in their 20s

  819. moves to a

  820. city because

  821. it's quiet and

  822. serene and you

  823. can find a nice

  824. place with a

  825. backyard and a

  826. picket fence,

  827. yeah?

  828. No one moves

  829. to a city because

  830. they're just

  831. looking for

  832. some peace

  833. and quiet.

  834. No, they go

  835. there because

  836. there's something

  837. always going

  838. on.

  839. That it's a

  840. center of

  841. opportunity and

  842. culture and

  843. energy and

  844. creativity and

  845. it's teeming

  846. with life.

  847. Heaven, John

  848. says, is a

  849. city.

  850. And not just

  851. any city, but a

  852. city, he says,

  853. prepared as a

  854. bride, adorned

  855. for her husband.

  856. A city decked

  857. out in

  858. radiance.

  859. and splendor.

  860. The second

  861. half of chapter

  862. 21 that we

  863. didn't read shows

  864. us how radiant

  865. this city is.

  866. And there's this

  867. beautiful image,

  868. John says, as

  869. it's coming down,

  870. it's like a

  871. rare jewel with

  872. light shining into

  873. it and sparkling

  874. out.

  875. And, you know,

  876. as this description

  877. goes on of this

  878. city, it's almost

  879. as if the line

  880. between this city

  881. as a place and

  882. this city as the

  883. people of God

  884. starts to blur.

  885. Is this city the

  886. place where we

  887. dwell or is this

  888. city us coming

  889. down where God

  890. will dwell?

  891. And in some

  892. sense, I think

  893. John's being

  894. intentionally

  895. ambiguous.

  896. This city is the

  897. place and it's the

  898. people.

  899. And we're arrayed

  900. like a bride,

  901. dressed in beauty.

  902. You know, one of

  903. the neat things

  904. about being a

  905. minister is that

  906. you get to be on

  907. this side of

  908. wedding ceremonies

  909. and you get to

  910. see a lot of

  911. brides come down

  912. aisles.

  913. And it's great.

  914. You know, you get

  915. to actually see what

  916. the groom sees.

  917. You get to see the

  918. splendor and the

  919. joy and the

  920. excitement of that

  921. moment time and

  922. time again.

  923. And isn't it

  924. fitting that when a

  925. bride comes in, we

  926. all stand up?

  927. And everyone

  928. starts to get a

  929. little excited and

  930. hopeful.

  931. Maybe I'm a

  932. romantic.

  933. I don't know.

  934. Yeah?

  935. You know, weddings

  936. are one of the

  937. most eschatological

  938. things that we do

  939. as human creatures.

  940. It's a great play

  941. acting of the final

  942. day when we come

  943. ushered in to the

  944. presence of God,

  945. decked out like a

  946. jewel.

  947. But you know, it's

  948. something more than

  949. that, isn't it?

  950. When we come to

  951. chapter 22, 1

  952. through 2, it

  953. seems that this

  954. city is also a

  955. lot like a

  956. garden.

  957. There's a river

  958. flowing through the

  959. middle of the

  960. street.

  961. And there are

  962. trees growing

  963. there.

  964. And not just any

  965. tree, but the

  966. tree of life.

  967. Which, of course,

  968. takes us back to

  969. the beginning of the

  970. Bible, doesn't it?

  971. To the Garden of

  972. Eden.

  973. And here, in the

  974. midst of this city

  975. garden conglomeration,

  976. is that tree of

  977. life.

  978. bringing fruit and

  979. healing to the

  980. nations.

  981. You know, if a

  982. city speaks, if

  983. that imagery speaks

  984. of beauty and

  985. energy, I think

  986. this agricultural

  987. garden imagery

  988. speaks of life and

  989. restoration and

  990. peace.

  991. And what God

  992. began in creation,

  993. he finally completes

  994. in the new

  995. creation.

  996. And there it is,

  997. the life that

  998. he's promised us.

  999. Growing like a

  1000. tree, flowing

  1001. like a river.

  1002. For anyone to

  1003. come and to

  1004. drink without

  1005. cost.

  1006. But it doesn't

  1007. just stop there.

  1008. There's a third

  1009. image that John

  1010. sweeps up into

  1011. his description.

  1012. In verse 21-3,

  1013. we're told that

  1014. God dwells there.

  1015. Literally, God

  1016. makes his

  1017. tabernacle there.

  1018. And in verse

  1019. 22 of chapter

  1020. 21, we're told

  1021. that there's not

  1022. an actual temple

  1023. structure in the

  1024. city, because

  1025. God is the

  1026. temple in its

  1027. midst.

  1028. In other words,

  1029. it's as if this

  1030. city garden thing

  1031. coming down from

  1032. heaven, it's as if

  1033. the whole city is

  1034. a temple, because

  1035. God dwells there.

  1036. It's a city and a

  1037. garden and a

  1038. temple all at

  1039. once.

  1040. And surely, this

  1041. last image is the

  1042. most profound,

  1043. isn't it?

  1044. At the center of

  1045. the city is the

  1046. Lord God Almighty

  1047. and the Lamb.

  1048. God dwells there

  1049. in his glory.

  1050. And there's no

  1051. need for the sun

  1052. or moon.

  1053. It's as if his

  1054. brilliance is so

  1055. bright that the

  1056. greatest lights we

  1057. can imagine seem

1058. to go dim in his

  1059. radiance.

  1060. And night flees

  1061. away and is made

  1062. no more.

  1063. night, of course,

  1064. being heavily

  1065. symbolic in

  1066. scripture, right?

  1067. Night being our

  1068. ignorance.

  1069. Night being our

  1070. sinfulness.

  1071. Night being our

  1072. sorrow.

  1073. And yet in the

  1074. radiance and light

  1075. of God's presence,

  1076. a deep knowledge.

  1077. And at last,

  1078. holiness and

  1079. happiness.

  1080. happiness.

  1081. And then, in

  1082. probably one of the

  1083. biggest understatements

  1084. of the whole

  1085. scripture, in

  1086. chapter 22,

  1087. verse 4, we're

  1088. told that they

  1089. will see his

  1090. face.

  1091. They will see his

  1092. face.

  1093. The one thing that

  1094. Moses couldn't do,

  1095. see God's glory.

  1096. That will be the

  1097. privilege of everyone

  1098. in that city.

  1099. And then we're

  1100. told something that

1101. seems a bit kind of

  1102. strange.

  1103. God's name will be

  1104. on their foreheads.

  1105. Which I think is a

  1106. picture of the

  1107. union between God

  1108. and his people.

  1109. But you know, this

  1110. beholding God and

  1111. this increasing

  1112. union with God,

  1113. even that is

  1114. something that's

  1115. going to be

  1116. dynamic and

  1117. progressive and

  1118. that goes on for

  1119. all eternity.

  1120. Jonathan Edwards

  1121. wrote a treatise

  1122. called The End

  1123. For Which God

  1124. Created the World.

  1125. And at the end

  1126. of that treatise,

  1127. he says,

  1128. imagine a point

  1129. infinitely high

  1130. and imagine us

  1131. and God

  1132. excelling towards

  1133. that same point

  1134. at a rapidly

  1135. increasing rate

  1136. at every moment

  1137. getting closer

  1138. and nearer

  1139. and more

  1140. entwined.

  1141. And he says it

  1142. will just keep

  1143. going and going

  1144. and going

  1145. and going.

  1146. After all,

  1147. who could

  1148. fathom the

  1149. depths of

  1150. God's wisdom?

  1151. Scripture tells

  1152. us that they

  1153. are unfathomable

  1154. for us.

  1155. So you see

  1156. what that means?

  1157. As we learn

  1158. more and more

  1159. about who God

  1160. is, as we

  1161. grow closer to

  1162. him in eternity,

  1163. it just opens

  1164. up further

  1165. and further

  1166. and deeper

  1167. and higher

  1168. and wider.

  1169. That there's

  1170. no end

  1171. to the wisdom

  1172. and to the

  1173. love and to

  1174. the righteousness

  1175. and the goodness

  1176. that will behold.

  1177. You know,

  1178. there's analogies

  1179. to this in our

  1180. present experience,

  1181. isn't there?

  1182. You know,

  1183. if you take any

  1184. expert in any

  1185. field, say

  1186. mathematics or

  1187. music, you know,

  1188. it's usually the

  1189. one who's the

  1190. expert who will

  1191. joyfully confess

  1192. that there's much

  1193. more to be

  1194. discovered and

  1195. enjoyed than he

  1196. or she could

  1197. ever realize.

  1198. That the more

  1199. they understand,

  1200. the more they

  1201. realize that it's

  1202. just a slice of

  1203. what's there.

  1204. And friends,

  1205. if that's true

  1206. of something like

  1207. mathematics or

  1208. music, how much

  1209. more true is it

  1210. of the God who

  1211. created them both

  1212. and created every

  1213. other field of

  1214. learning that there

  1215. is?

  1216. So the picture

  1217. that John gives

  1218. us of this

  1219. city, garden,

  1220. temple where

  1221. at last God

  1222. is the center

  1223. of our

  1224. affections for

  1225. all eternity

  1226. with no end

  1227. shows us that

  1228. all the joys of

  1229. this life now

  1230. are just a

  1231. foretaste of

  1232. that unending

  1233. feast.

  1234. The things that

  1235. we enjoy now

  1236. are just a

  1237. shadow of the

  1238. substance that

  1239. will be there.

  1240. Just an echo,

  1241. just a strain

  1242. of that ever

  1243. swelling symphony.

  1244. And if that's

  1245. true, if our

  1246. joys are just

  1247. a foretaste,

  1248. just a mere

  1249. glimpse of what

  1250. will be held

  1251. there, again,

  1252. I think it means

  1253. two things.

  1254. First, it means

  1255. that the joys

  1256. that we experience

  1257. here and now

  1258. should always be

  1259. leading our

  1260. hearts upwards

  1261. in gratitude

  1262. and forwards

  1263. in anticipation.

  1264. That we should

  1265. never in this

  1266. life experience

  1267. any delight

  1268. or any

  1269. satisfaction

  1270. or any joy

  1271. without, in some

  1272. sense, using it

  1273. to call our

  1274. hearts forward

  1275. to that day

  1276. when we'll

  1277. behold God's

  1278. face and we'll

  1279. fall forever

  1280. into the depths

  1281. of the One

  1282. who is the

  1283. fountain of

  1284. all good.

  1285. God's face and

  1286. so when music

  1287. swells our

  1288. hearts and

  1289. when laughter

  1290. brightens our

  1291. faces and

  1292. when the table

  1293. is set and

  1294. the chairs are

  1295. full, friends,

  1296. it would be a

  1297. waste of them

  1298. not to take

  1299. that experience

  1300. and to go on

  1301. and to think of

  1302. the world to

  1303. come.

  1304. It would be

  1305. to cut our

  1306. present pleasure

  1307. short, to cut

  1308. short what

  1309. they're telling

  1310. us if we

  1311. didn't experience

  1312. them and then

  1313. go on to dwell

  1314. on the great

  1315. day when we

  1316. will dwell in

  1317. the new heavens

  1318. and the new

  1319. earth.

  1320. You see, all

  1321. of our present

  1322. joys are entryways

  1323. to true worship.

  1324. And second, if

  1325. our present

  1326. joys are just

  1327. a foretaste of

  1328. what's to come,

  1329. you know, then

  1330. it means it's

  1331. okay if we

  1332. don't experience

  1333. everything that

  1334. life has to

  1335. offer.

  1336. It means that

  1337. you don't need

  1338. the most amazing

  1339. job and the

  1340. most amazing

  1341. vacation and the

  1342. most amazing

  1343. spiritual experiences

  1344. here and now

  1345. to be eternally

  1346. satisfied.

  1347. it's okay if

  1348. you didn't get

  1349. exactly what you

  1350. want for Christmas,

  1351. right?

  1352. There's something

  1353. better in store.

  1354. And you know,

  1355. besides, even if

  1356. you found the

  1357. perfect job or

  1358. the perfect spouse,

  1359. they wouldn't do

  1360. the trick.

  1361. There'd still be

  1362. hunger for

  1363. something more.

  1364. Because we were

  1365. made to behold

  1366. the face of God

  1367. and to enjoy

  1368. Him forever.

  1369. If we find that

  1370. this life leaves

  1371. us longing for

  1372. something more,

  1373. then it means

  1374. we're seeing

  1375. things the way

  1376. they really are.

  1377. Because there is

  1378. something more.

  1379. And it's coming

  1380. for those whom

  1381. He loves.

  1382. So John has

  1383. shown us that

  1384. our tears in

  1385. this life are

  1386. temporary and

  1387. that our joys in

  1388. this life are

  1389. just a foretaste

  1390. of what's to

  1391. come.

  1392. But finally,

  1393. we see that the

  1394. pursuits of this

  1395. life are a

  1396. preparation.

  1397. You know,

  1398. from what we've

  1399. seen so far,

  1400. one might think

  1401. that in light of

  1402. the world to

  1403. come,

  1404. that life here

  1405. and now,

  1406. at the end of

  1407. the day,

  1408. doesn't matter

  1409. much.

  1410. If that life to

  1411. come takes away

  1412. all our tears

  1413. and completely

  1414. engulfs all our

  1415. present joys,

  1416. why bother so

  1417. much with this

  1418. life here and

  1419. now?

  1420. But,

  1421. John has one

  1422. last image for

  1423. us.

  1424. at the end of

  1425. chapter 21

  1426. and verse 24,

  1427. we read,

  1428. the kings of

  1429. the earth will

  1430. bring their

  1431. glory into the

  1432. city.

  1433. And then again

  1434. in verse 26,

  1435. they will bring

  1436. into it the

  1437. glory and honor

  1438. of the nations.

  1439. You see,

  1440. the great

  1441. gathering of

  1442. God's people

  1443. into that city

  1444. will also be a

  1445. gathering of all

  1446. that they've

  1447. done to his

  1448. glory.

  1449. All the unique

  1450. ways in which

  1451. God's glory has

  1452. reflected itself

  1453. through countless

  1454. human cultures

  1455. and countless

  1456. human lives

  1457. will be swept

  1458. up in the

  1459. celebration and

  1460. beauty of the

  1461. world to come.

  1462. That's hard to

  1463. say exactly what

  1464. that's going to

  1465. look like.

  1466. Perhaps it's

  1467. hard not to

  1468. think of the

  1469. upcoming Olympics

  1470. and I think

  1471. 40 days,

  1472. right?

  1473. There's a

  1474. little ticker

  1475. on the

  1476. website if

  1477. you go.

  1478. Counting

  1479. down.

  1480. You know,

  1481. in the opening

  1482. ceremony,

  1483. the nations

  1484. stream in,

  1485. each displaying

  1486. what's unique

  1487. about their

  1488. culture.

  1489. Sort of a

  1490. triumphant and

  1491. joyful moment.

  1492. But that,

  1493. of course,

  1494. will be just a

  1495. dim reflection

  1496. at best of

  1497. what will take

  1498. place in the

  1499. city to come.

  1500. When the

  1501. kings of the

  1502. nations and the

  1503. nations themselves

  1504. bring in their

  1505. honor and

  1506. glory.

  1507. The way in

  1508. which God has

  1509. refracted and

  1510. reflected and

  1511. poured himself out

  1512. on them in all

  1513. their unique ways.

  1514. In your unique

  1515. way.

  1516. In my unique

  1517. way.

  1518. And then John

  1519. tells us that the

  1520. nations will not

  1521. just gather,

  1522. but that we will

  1523. reign.

1524. At the end of the

  1525. passage that we

  1526. read this morning,

  1527. John says that

  1528. we'll reign forever

  1529. and ever.

  1530. Life in the city

  1531. to come will not

  1532. be static or

  1533. sedentary.

  1534. We will reign.

  1535. In the original

  1536. creation, remember

  1537. what God told

  1538. Adam?

  1539. To keep and to

  1540. cultivate the

  1541. garden.

  1542. That was our

  1543. original mandate,

  1544. to rule under

  1545. God, to be

  1546. culture creators,

  1547. to take God's

  1548. name into the

  1549. world, and to

  1550. bring out the

  1551. sort of latent

  1552. beauty and

  1553. potentiality of the

  1554. world that God

  1555. has made.

  1556. And what do we

  1557. see here in the

  1558. new creation?

  1559. We see that in

  1560. the new creation

  1561. having been rescued

  1562. from all the

  1563. effects of the

  1564. fall, we take up

  1565. that creation call

  1566. once again and

  1567. bring the glory of

  1568. God forward into

  1569. the new heavens and

  1570. the new earth.

  1571. And the lives that

  1572. we're living now are

  1573. preparation for that

  1574. day.

  1575. when we stream

  1576. into the city and

  1577. flow forth raining

  1578. forever.

  1579. And friends, don't

1580. you see that if our

  1581. pursuits now are a

  1582. preparation for that

  1583. day, then by all

  1584. means, they matter.

  1585. Christian hope doesn't

  1586. steal the meaning of

  1587. this life, just the

  1588. opposite.

  1589. It makes life now

  1590. eternally meaningful and

  1591. significant.

1592. what we do now gets

  1593. swept up into the

  1594. world to come that

  1595. will never end.

  1596. In fact, it's only a

  1597. biblical worldview that

  1598. really gives lasting

  1599. meaning to our

  1600. pursuits in this life.

1601. Think about it, if in a

  1602. million years we're all

1603. going to turn to ash when

1604. the sun expands and no

1605. one will remember a thing

  1606. about humanity, then maybe

  1607. there's some short-term

  1608. meaning to be had.

  1609. But friend, nothing

  1610. really matters in the

  1611. end if that's true.

1612. And at best, at best,

1613. our work and our acts

1614. of mercy and our longing

1615. and pursuit of justice and

  1616. our relationships, friends,

1617. if that picture of the

1618. world is true, at best,

1619. those things are just a

  1620. distraction from our

  1621. annihilation.

1622. But that is not where

  1623. the story is headed.

  1624. And because our pursuits

1625. are a preparation for the

1626. new heavens and the new

1627. earth, they are rich with

  1628. meaning and significance.

1629. And secondly, if they are a

  1630. preparation for that day,

  1631. then surely that's an

  1632. encouragement for us to

  1633. begin shaping and directing

1634. all of our pursuits here

1635. and now to the glory of

  1636. God.

1637. That's what matters in the

  1638. end.

1639. Paul says whether you eat

1640. or whether you drink, do

1641. everything to the glory of

  1642. God.

1643. In other words, the future

1644. that's in store for us gives

  1645. our pursuits a single

  1646. magnificent focus.

1647. No longer are we doing them

1648. for our own sake, but for

  1649. God's sake.

1650. No longer are we going

1651. about them to advance our

1652. own desires, but to advance

  1653. what God desires.

1654. No longer are we doing

1655. them out of a longing to be

  1656. recognized or remembered or

1657. to get the praise of our

  1658. fellow humans.

1659. But we're doing them out of

1660. love to God who made us

1661. and loved us and redeemed

1662. us and with whom we will

  1663. dwell for eternity.

1664. So let me end this morning

  1665. with two final exhortations.

1666. First, as we consider the

1667. future that God has in store,

1668. it puts a very serious

  1669. question before us, doesn't

  1670. it?

1671. It asks, are you sure that you

1672. will be a part of that city?

1673. At the end of chapter 21,

1674. John makes clear that not

  1675. everyone will be there,

1676. but nothing unclean will ever

1677. enter it, nor anyone who does

1678. what is detestable or false,

1679. but only those who are written

1680. in the Lamb's book of life.

1681. And you know, the reality is,

1682. friends, that we're all trying to

1683. get our name into some kind of

1684. book of life, aren't we?

1685. But you can have your name

  1686. etched on buildings because

1687. you've given so much money to

  1688. the man.

1689. And you can have your name

  1690. footnoted in scholarly tome

  1691. after scholarly tome.

1692. Or you can have your name

  1693. plastered on billboards.

1694. Prince is coming to one of the

1695. casinos, by the way, in case

  1696. you didn't notice.

  1697. I saw that on 95.

1698. His only East Coast appearance.

1699. You can have your name plastered

  1700. on billboards.

1701. You can have your name

  1702. endlessly debated on blogs.

1703. You can have your name revered

1704. on the sports field, and they

1705. can raise it up in the stadium,

1706. and there it is, your number

  1707. retired.

1708. But friends, eventually, all of

1709. these things will fade and

  1710. perish.

1711. And if that is where we're

1712. putting our hope, then we will

  1713. perish with them.

1714. But if our name is found in the

1715. book of life that belongs to the

1716. Lamb, if He knows our name, then we

  1717. will never perish.

1718. Friend, do you have the assurance

1719. that your name is written there in

1720. the book that never fades before the

  1721. one who lives forever?

1722. Have you placed your faith and

1723. your hope in Jesus Christ?

1724. He is the Lamb who came to earth

1725. and died and rose again so that you

  1726. might enter that city.

1727. We're told that nothing unclean can

  1728. enter it.

1729. So what hope is there for us who are

1730. unclean, who have done what is

  1731. detestable and false?

1732. Friends, our hope is the Lamb who

1733. came to earth and was crucified and

1734. made unclean so that unclean sinners

1735. like you and me might be made clean

1736. through faith in Him and given

1737. access and freedom and joy to enter

  1738. that city.

1739. Are you sure that your name is in His

  1740. book?

1741. Finally, for those of us who are

1742. trusting in Christ, the question is

1743. this, how can I be living now in light

1744. of the city that is to come?

1745. How can I be living right now?

  1746. Because that is true.

1747. That is the future, brothers and

1748. sisters, that Christ has purchased for

  1749. you.

1750. This is the inheritance that He's won

  1751. for you.

1752. And it is sure and it is solid.

1753. Write this down, God says in chapter

  1754. 21, because it's true.

1755. I'm the beginning and I'm the end.

1756. And this is what I've prepared for you.

1757. So friends, in the midst of the tears of

1758. this life and the joys and the pursuits,

1759. keep your eyes on the city to come.

1760. Remember who you are and where you are

  1761. headed.

1762. Live now in light of that city.

1763. And I can assure you that it will soften

1764. your tears and it will deepen your

1765. joys and it will focus your pursuits.

1766. And then at last, when we reach that

1767. city, as C.S. Lewis writes at the end of

1768. the Chronicles of Narnia, we find that

1769. all our life in this world and all our

1770. adventures had only been the cover and

  1771. title page, he says.

1772. Now at last, we'll begin chapter one of

1773. the great story, which no one on earth

1774. has read, which goes on forever.

1775. And in which every chapter is better than

  1776. the one before.

  1777. Let's pray together.

1778. Oh Lord God, we thank you that you have

1779. looked upon us in our hopeless estate and

1780. drawn near to us in Christ.

1781. God, I pray for my brothers and sisters

1782. here that this hope, as Paul says, would

1783. be a burning realization in their hearts.

1784. Lord, enlighten all of our hearts so that

1785. we might know this hope to which you've

  1786. called us.

1787. God, we want to live our lives now in

  1788. light of that future.

1789. We want to be a people who are bringing

1790. that future into the present in joy and

1791. in courage and in passion.

1792. God, make us so by your spirit.

1793. And Father, I pray for those here this

1794. morning who, Lord, don't know you, who are

1795. far from you, who are uncertain whether

1796. they are indeed in your book, as you say,

  1797. your book of life.

1798. God, I pray that by your spirit you would

1799. get a hold of them and open their eyes to

1800. see the beauty of Christ crucified, our

  1801. Lamb.

1802. God, would you call forth in them faith and

1803. repentance and hope in him.

1804. God, help them to see that this hope isn't

1805. just pie in the sky, but it is a certain and

1806. sure future that you have purchased for your

  1807. people.

1808. God, make it so for your namesake.

  1809. Amen.
