  1. I find it helpful, both in my personal life and in our family's life, as well as in my

  2. role as a pastor of this church, to step back and to take stock of where we've been in

  3. the past and where we're going in the future.

  4. And for me, the new year is often a time when I do that.

  5. Over the last two weeks, I've had some time to reflect, and I wanted to begin this morning

  6. by sharing some reflections on where I think we are as a church.

  7. Just in the last six months, the Lord has done some wonderful and exciting things in

  8. this church.

  9. Let me just highlight three areas.

  10. First of all, the church plant in New London that we are praying and working towards.

  11. It's been a particular encouragement for me, working with this group of believers from New

  12. London.

  13. Every time I go out there, there are new people who I haven't met before who are joining their

  14. Bible studies and coming to our church plant prayer meetings and discussion meetings.

  15. Friends and co-workers that people have been praying for for months or years have come to

  16. faith in Jesus and are beginning to walk with Him.

  17. In December, they had 40 people come to their monthly co-ed Bible study.

  18. God is doing some wonderful things, and it's exciting for us to be a part of helping a new

  19. movement and laying the foundation for what we pray will ultimately be a new church.

  20. Second, our church's mission to New Haven.

  21. I believe that God is shaping us into a church that is increasingly international.

  22. If you just look around the room on almost any Sunday morning, even today, you can see people

  23. from all over the world, literally.

  24. And this is who we are as a church.

  25. And God has been putting it on people's hearts to be welcoming people from all over the world

  26. and finding ways to introduce them to Jesus, whom we love, whom we love so dearly.

  27. At the same time, I believe that God is also shaping us into a church with a heart for our city,

  28. including the many in our city who are broken and hurting and needy.

  29. And we, too, recognize our own brokenness and our hurt and our neediness as well.

  30. But some of us have been thinking and praying about starting a Christian addiction recovery group.

  31. And that's something that we've been praying and discussing about.

  32. There's a small group of people who have started meeting and praying about starting a Christian

  33. health clinic to provide holistic Christian-based care to people who need it.

  34. God is bringing people to this church.

  35. Some of you here aren't just people from all other parts of the world who have come to New Haven,

  36. but people who have been born and raised here.

  37. Or maybe even more miraculously, people who have come here from other places and don't have

  38. any plans to leave.

  39. And we praise God that God is giving us a heart for the city that he's put us in.

  40. Third, within our church family, we have had an explosion of new life.

  41. We have had 11 new babies in the last six months.

  42. Six in December alone.

  43. Now, that's a record.

  44. And so for that reason and others, we're considering our building space needs.

  45. How we can best use and adapt the space that we do have.

  46. Whether we need to build more space somehow for children's ministry and for multi-purpose

  47. meeting spaces and things like that.

  48. We've also celebrated several baptisms during the past year.

  49. Testimonies to the work of God's Spirit and bringing people to new life in Jesus.

  50. And those are always awesome opportunities.

  51. And there are other people who are interested in baptism and we're talking with them and

  52. preparing them so we can look forward to more.

  53. So it is an exciting time to be part of this church.

  54. At the same time, the last six months, for me at least, have been one of the most difficult

  55. and stressful times in our church.

  56. Many of you have been facing and are facing personal trials.

  57. Whether it's grieving the death of a loved one who's passed away or caring for a child who's

  58. not doing well or struggling in a difficult marriage or trying to survive financially or

  59. simply being wearied by the constant fast pace and the onslaught of life.

  60. Every week at our staff meeting, we pray for a list of people who are sick or recovering

  61. from illness.

  62. And as the list continues to grow, the list continues to grow.

  63. But you know, we're not just a list of individuals who are facing our own struggles.

  64. We're a body of believers knit together in Jesus Christ.

  65. And so when we're a body, when one person is sorrowful, when one part is hurting, we all

  66. share in that hurt and that sorrow.

  67. For many of us, our hearts have been particularly burdened for Pastor Matt and Brandy.

  68. As Brandy's cancer continues to spread throughout her body and recently causing her much pain.

  69. We weep with them.

  70. We pray that God would do a miracle even as we face the reality that we are not in control

  71. of our life or our death.

  72. We face not only trials, physical and emotional, but also spiritual temptation.

  73. And the devil in our trial seeks to exaggerate our sinful tendencies, to drive us to anger

  74. and anxiety and despair, or to sow discord among brothers and sisters in Christ, or to distract

  75. and confuse us in a bunch of different ways.

  76. And over the last six months, I've been more acutely aware of the reality that every day

  77. we are in a spiritual battle, that we do have an enemy who wants to steal and kill and destroy,

  78. who wants to divide, frustrate and discourage us.

  79. And as I look ahead into this new year, I don't see an easy solution.

  80. I don't see a quick fix to our trials and temptations.

  81. There's a long road ahead.

  82. None of us can see exactly where it will lead.

  83. And so at the same time, I believe this is a very exciting time to be part of this church

  84. that God's brought us together for this purpose.

  85. And yet, it's a hard and difficult time at the same time.

  86. And I don't know how you're feeling individually and in your own families.

  87. You may be feeling one or both of those as well.

  88. But what I want to look at this morning is what we need to know in order to face whatever

  89. may come in this new year.

  90. For our text this morning, I've chosen Psalm 23.

  91. You can turn there in the Bible.

  92. It's page 458 in the Pew Bibles if you're looking at one of those.

  93. It's probably one of the most famous passages in the Bible.

  94. But it's a wonderful passage.

  95. It's well known for good reason.

  96. Now, since it's a psalm, psalms are designed for corporate worship and prayer.

  97. I'd like us to read it responsibly.

  98. We don't usually do this, but I'm going to read verse 1.

  99. Then you can respond with verse 2.

  100. Then I'll read verse 3 and so on.

  101. So Psalm 23.

  102. Let's read together.

  103. The Lord is my shepherd.

  104. I shall not want.

  105. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  106. He leads me beside still waters.

  107. He restores my soul.

  108. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  109. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

  110. For you are with me.

  111. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

  112. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

  113. You anoint my head with oil.

  114. My cup overflows.

  115. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.

  116. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  117. Amen.

  118. Now this is a very rich psalm.

  119. We could approach it from several angles.

  120. We could do a biographical study of the life of David and how God called him to be a shepherd of Israel.

  121. We could do a cultural background study of shepherds in the ancient Near East and what light that sheds on this passage.

  122. We could do a literary study of the grammar and the rhythm and the parallelism of the psalm.

  123. And all of those approaches could be fruitful in their own way.

  124. But today I want to focus on one thing.

  125. I want to focus on how Jesus lived out this psalm.

  126. And what it looks like for us to know and follow Jesus as our good shepherd today.

  127. And in particular I want to look at three pictures of how Jesus is this kind of shepherd.

  128. This shepherd that is described in this psalm.

  129. From three parts, three incidents in Jesus' life on earth.

  130. So the first thing I want to look at is how Jesus feeds us through his word.

  131. And we see this particularly in the New Testament in the feeding of the 5,000.

  132. But verses 1 and 2, it says,

  133. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

  134. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  135. Now in the New Testament, there's this story of Jesus feeding this group of 5,000 people.

  136. Actually it's more than that.

  137. 5,000 men plus women and children in the wilderness.

  138. And in that passage, before he feeds them with bread and fish, it says that Jesus saw,

  139. Mark 6, 34 says,

  140. Jesus saw that the people were like sheep without a shepherd.

  141. And so he began teaching them many things.

  142. In other words, Jesus recognized that their greatest need was a spiritual need

  143. that could be met by his word, by his teaching.

  144. They were people who were confused.

  145. They were insecure.

  146. They were prone to latch on to anyone who would come their way promising a better life.

  147. And so Jesus taught them with his word all day until the evening.

  148. Now, of course, by the evening time, they were hungry.

  149. And so that's where the food comes in.

  150. Jesus not only feeds them with his word, he also feeds them dinner.

  151. It says he made them sit down on the green grass.

  152. There's actually not many places in the New Testament where the grass is described as green

  153. or where colors are used in the Gospels.

  154. But it's one of the few places that points it out.

  155. You see, Jesus is living out this good shepherd who makes his sheep lie down in green pastures.

  156. And then at the end it says he fed them until they ate and were satisfied.

  157. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

  158. In other words, I'm satisfied.

  159. I have everything I need.

  160. You know, I'm told that usually sheep don't lie down if they're hungry or if they're afraid.

  161. They lie down only when they're satisfied and secure.

  162. And that's what Jesus does for us.

  163. He makes us satisfied and secure.

  164. He feeds and provides for us through his word.

  165. Now we think of that story in terms of the food that he fed them, but he spent all day teaching them.

  166. He fed them with his word.

  167. And Jesus feeds us today in the same way.

  168. He sees us.

  169. And like the crowds back then, he sees that we too, apart from him, are like sheep without a shepherd.

  170. And so he comes to teach us many things.

  171. To generously give us his wisdom so that we can feed on him and lay down and rest.

  172. So as we seek to move forward in planting a church in New London,

  173. in coming alongside those who are needy in our city,

  174. in sharing the gospel with people from all over the world,

  175. Jesus' word will sustain us, equip us, and direct us.

  176. As we raise children and seek to live as godly families,

  177. Jesus' word is what we need to be fed and sustained and satisfied.

  178. And it's the same as we face trials and temptations.

  179. As we face uncertainties and spiritual battles,

  180. Jesus' word will comfort us, uphold us,

  181. and keep our eyes fixed on our captain in the fight.

  182. As we walk through the wilderness,

  183. his word is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path.

  184. So brothers and sisters, may we sit at Jesus' feet this year and listen to him.

  185. May we come together every Sunday

  186. and every time we gather for small groups or Sunday school classes,

  187. hungry for his word,

  188. anticipating that God will meet with us and speak to us through his word.

  189. May we fight to carve out the time to listen to Jesus' word personally and in our families.

  190. Now, I know it's not easy.

  191. I find it's a constant battle for me to carve out time alone with God

  192. in reading the word and prayer.

  193. It's a battle that I feel like I've never been able to say I've won it.

  194. But it's always something that I'm in the middle of.

  195. Because there are a thousand things in this world that call for our attention.

  196. Think of all the things that call for your attention.

  197. Text message alerts.

  198. Crying toddlers.

  199. Demanding bosses.

  200. Unanswered emails.

  201. Dirty dishes in the sink.

  202. People asking you for help.

  203. All kinds of things.

  204. Good things.

  205. Bad things and different things.

  206. But hard as it may be, we must fight to carve out time to listen to God's word.

  207. So that we can respond to all these other voices

  208. and all these other requests and all these other invitations.

  209. Not just frantically flying from one thing to another

  210. and lurching in all different directions and getting nowhere,

  211. but keeping our eyes on our shepherd

  212. and following him as we respond to everything else that comes into our life.

  213. And what does this look like?

  214. Well, the challenge may look different for each one of you.

  215. A year or two ago, I was talking to a medical resident.

  216. And at that time, he was working literally 90 hours a week in the hospital.

  217. Now, I know there's a law that says 80 hours a week,

  218. but all the medical residents know that that law is not really followed.

  219. And he was in a program that was actually exempt from that law.

  220. So they could require him to work more than 80 hours a week.

  221. He said, the only time I have during my day consistently to sit and think

  222. is when I go to the bathroom.

  223. And so he says, I make it a habit.

  224. I have the Bible on my phone.

  225. And I make it a habit to read the Bible on my phone in the hospital bathroom.

  226. And so that while I'm in the middle of my work,

  227. I can be filling my mind with God's word

  228. and seeking to display the fruits of the spirit in my workplace

  229. instead of falling into some of the negative patterns in my workplace.

  230. Or historical example.

  231. This is a little extreme as well.

  232. But Susanna Wesley gave birth to 19 children in 19 years.

  233. Nine of them died as infants.

  234. But she had to raise 10 of them to adulthood.

  235. She had a rocking chair where she would sit down

  236. and pull her apron over her face

  237. and she would tell her children not to bother her for a few minutes.

  238. And she did this consistently so her children knew.

  239. They knew the drill.

  240. Mommy sits in her chair and puts her apron over her face.

  241. It means she's praying.

  242. And you don't bother her for a few minutes.

  243. So even in the middle of being constantly pregnant

  244. and raising that many children,

  245. she fought to carve out time

  246. to listen to the Lord and to be with Him.

  247. Now, I don't know what it looks like for you.

  248. Most of our life circumstances are not quite that extreme.

  249. Most of us are not working 90 hours a week.

  250. Most of us are not raising 10 children

  251. or being caught pregnant for most of 19 years.

  252. But it's worth the effort

  253. to fight to carve out the time

  254. to read and meditate on God's word,

  255. whether that means getting up early in the morning,

  256. spending time at night,

  257. or setting a routine with your spouse

  258. so that one of you can watch the kids

  259. and the other one can have some time alone with the Lord.

  260. If you need some structure,

  261. there's Bible reading plans on the back table.

  262. It's called More Precious Than Gold.

  263. They're free.

  264. You can pick up one of those

  265. if that would help you to have some structure

  266. in how you read through the Bible this year.

  267. It gives some different tracks that you can follow.

  268. If you've never had the habit of reading the Bible,

  269. ask somebody else who you think might have

  270. and say, how do you do it?

  271. Could I join you maybe once a week

  272. for your time reading the Bible and praying

  273. just to do it with you?

  274. That's how you learn these things

  275. is by seeing other people doing them

  276. and by trial and error yourself as well.

  277. But, brothers and sisters,

  278. let's spend time in the Word of God,

  279. both individually and corporately.

  280. Jesus feeds us and He meets us

  281. and He satisfies us with the wisdom in His Word.

  282. So that's the first way that Jesus is our Good Shepherd.

  283. He feeds us through His Word.

  284. But the second way that Jesus is our Good Shepherd

  285. is that Jesus comes near to us with His presence

  286. when we're overwhelmed and distressed.

  287. And in the New Testament where we see this,

  288. one place where we see this,

  289. is in the story that comes right after

  290. the feeding of the 5,000

  291. in Matthew, Mark, and John.

  292. Luke doesn't include it.

  293. But in three of the four Gospels,

  294. they finish this long day

  295. where Jesus had been teaching them all day

  296. and then He makes the disciples feed dinner

  297. to all these guys,

  298. 5,000 guys.

  299. Goodness, that's a big catering job.

  300. And then He sends the disciples in a boat

  301. across the lake

  302. and He goes up the mountain to pray.

  303. And so they were already tired before this.

  304. They had a long day out in the hot desert sun.

  305. Then they were feeding,

  306. then they were the catering crew

  307. for a 5,000 person dinner.

  308. And now they're rowing across the lake

  309. and they have a stiff headwind coming the wrong way.

  310. And so they're rowing

  311. for almost the whole night.

  312. And then around 4 or 5 a.m.,

  313. Jesus comes out to them

  314. walking on the lake.

  315. And they did exactly what you and I would do

  316. if we were in that situation.

  317. They totally freaked out.

  318. And they think He's a ghost.

  319. And He says,

  320. Take heart.

  321. It's me.

  322. I am.

  323. Don't be afraid.

  324. And He gets into the boat

  325. and immediately the wind dies down

  326. and the waters become still.

  327. Now, if you notice,

  328. the 23rd Psalm

  329. begins by talking about the Lord feeding us

  330. and making us lie down in green pastures.

  331. And the next verse says,

  332. He leads me beside still waters.

  333. In other words,

  334. He brings peace

  335. in the midst of chaos

  336. and confusion

  337. and overwhelming circumstances.

  338. And verse 4 says,

  339. Even though I walk through the valley

  340. of the shadow of death

  341. or row through the middle of the night

  342. on a dark lake

  343. with the wind coming against me,

  344. even there you are with me

  345. and I will fear no evil.

  346. So in this account,

  347. and you can find it

  348. at the end of Mark chapter 6

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  349. if you want to read it,

  350. Jesus sends His disciples

  351. across the lake

  352. into the storm.

  353. And we have to say

  354. that Jesus knew

  355. what they were facing.

  356. Jesus wasn't surprised

  357. by the storm

  358. that they encountered.

  359. He saw how it affected them

  360. on the lake

  361. as He was praying for them

  362. on the hillside.

  363. And you know,

  364. sometimes Jesus calls us

  365. to do hard things

  366. and make sacrifices

  367. for the sake of His mission

  368. to seek and save

  369. more lost sheep.

  370. The disciples had spent

  371. the whole day

  372. in the hot sun.

  373. And then Jesus had asked them

  374. to feed dinner

  375. to 5,000 men.

  376. And then He had sent them

  377. rowing all night in a boat

  378. on a stormy lake.

  379. They were exhausted.

  380. Now we have some exciting

  381. opportunities before us

  382. as a church.

  383. The opportunity to support

  384. a new church plant.

  385. The opportunity to introduce

  386. people to Jesus

  387. from all over the world.

  388. To reach people in our city

  389. who are broken and hurting.

  390. To raise children.

  391. To be godly men and women

  392. in the family of the church.

  393. But none of these things

  394. are easy.

  395. They all have a cost.

  396. They all have a cost.

  397. Of time and energy and money.

  398. They call for humility and patience.

  399. The word patience can be translated

  400. long suffering.

  401. Now sacrifice and humility

  402. and patient endurance

  403. may sound like noble

  404. and lofty virtues.

  405. But they don't always feel good.

  406. When you're in the middle

  407. of a stormy night

  408. trying to row across a lake.

  409. When you've been awakened

  410. for the fourth time

  411. in the night

  412. with a sick child.

  413. When you're trying to reach out

  414. to a friend

  415. who is in some trouble.

  416. But the promise of Jesus

  417. is this.

  418. That when we walk with him.

  419. That when we walk

  420. in obedience to him

  421. that he is never

  422. far away from us.

  423. He is always

  424. interceding for us.

  425. As Jesus was on the hillside

  426. all night

  427. while the disciples

  428. were facing the storm

  429. he was praying.

  430. And he was praying for them.

  431. You see even when

  432. God seems most far away.

  433. Even when we feel

  434. exhausted.

  435. overwhelmed by life

  436. and far away from God.

  437. When we've made sacrifices

  438. to follow Jesus

  439. and we don't

  440. and we feel burned out.

  441. Jesus comes near

  442. to meet us.

  443. And strengthen us.

  444. And encourage us.

  445. And give rest

  446. to our weary souls

  447. and bodies.

  448. And to let us know

  449. as he said to his disciples

  450. it's me.

  451. I'm here.

  452. You're not alone.

  453. This is how Jesus

  454. is our good shepherd.

  455. He comes near to us

  456. with his presence.

  457. And you know

  458. sometimes Jesus

  459. mercy

  460. to weary disciples

  461. comes in very concrete

  462. tangible

  463. material packages.

  464. Like a good night's sleep.

  465. Or a satisfying meal

  466. cooked and delivered

  467. by a friend.

  468. or a solitary walk

  469. through snow

  470. covered woods.

  471. Or an unexpected gift

  472. when finances

  473. are shorn.

  474. Jesus feeds us

  475. with his word.

  476. We need to see that.

  477. And in some way

  478. that's a primary

  479. and important

  480. and essential.

  481. But Jesus also

  482. knows and cares

  483. for our very

  484. concrete

  485. bodily

  486. weaknesses.

  487. when we're just

  488. exhausted

  489. and can't

  490. and feel like

  491. we can't

  492. make it any longer.

  493. He reassures us

  494. sometimes in very

  495. concrete ways

  496. of his love

  497. and his shepherding care.

  498. There's a story

  499. in the Old Testament

  500. of the prophet Elijah.

  501. And the prophet Elijah

  502. had endured

  503. an intense conflict

  504. with the wicked

  505. king Ahab

  506. of Israel

  507. and all his

  508. prophets

  509. of the false

  510. god Baal.

  511. And Queen Jezebel

  512. hated him.

  513. So she

  514. vowed to kill him

  515. and so Elijah

  516. ran away

  517. into the desert

  518. and he just

  519. crashed.

  520. He had been

  521. standing for God

  522. and proclaiming

  523. his word

  524. amidst

  525. intense opposition

  526. and he finally

  527. it just

  528. got too much

  529. for him.

  530. He was exhausted.

  531. He was burned out.

  532. He was depressed.

  533. He said,

  534. Lord,

  535. I don't want

  536. to be a prophet

  537. anymore.

  538. I don't even

  539. want to be alive

  540. anymore.

  541. It's enough.

  542. Just

  543. take my life.

  544. And you know

  545. what God said

  546. to him?

  547. God said,

  548. you need some sleep.

  549. Go to sleep.

  550. So he slept

  551. for a long time.

  552. And then you know

  553. what he did

  554. when he was sleeping?

  555. God sent an angel.

  556. But the angel

  557. didn't come with

  558. a message.

  559. The angel came

  560. to cook him dinner.

  561. And he said,

  562. Elijah,

  563. wake up.

  564. Your dinner's ready.

  565. Here you go.

  566. Hot off the fire

  567. with a glass

  568. of cool water.

  569. Then go to sleep

  570. again.

  571. Then the angel

  572. came back

  573. and cooked him

  574. breakfast.

  575. And then Elijah

  576. took a long walk

  577. for 40 days

  578. and 40 nights

  579. through the desert.

  580. And after that

  581. long walk,

  582. he was finally

  583. ready to hear

  584. God's word.

  585. Do you know

  586. that sometimes

  587. that's how broken

  588. down we can get?

  589. I don't know

  590. if you've been there.

  591. But sometimes

  592. that's how broken

  593. down we can get.

  594. We're so exhausted.

  595. We're so burned out

  596. that we can hardly

  597. hear the word of God

  598. and find comfort

  599. in it.

  600. And Jesus

  601. is very merciful.

  602. He sends

  603. his messengers

  604. to cook us meals

  605. and let us sleep.

  606. You know,

  607. sometimes the best way

  608. to come alongside

  609. someone who is

  610. really suffering,

  611. who's totally

  612. overwhelmed,

  613. who's fighting

  614. a hard battle,

  615. is not to go to them

  616. and preach a sermon

  617. or quote a long list

  618. of Bible verses

  619. or give them

  620. lots of advice,

  621. but to bring them

  622. a meal

  623. or bring them

  624. a plate of cookies

  625. or shovel their walk

  626. without asking

  627. or offer to babysit

  628. their kids

  629. for two hours

  630. just so they can sleep

  631. or so they can go

  632. for a walk

  633. in the woods

  634. on a beautiful

  635. snowy day.

  636. If somebody offers

  637. you a gift like that,

  638. don't refuse it

  639. out of pride.

  640. You know,

  641. sometimes we refuse

  642. help from others

  643. because we're proud

  644. of being self-sufficient

  645. and never needing

  646. anything from anyone.

  647. But you know,

  648. as Christians,

  649. in Jesus Christ,

  650. we've all received

  651. salvation,

  652. which is a gift

  653. that we can never deserve

  654. and that we can never repay.

  655. So don't be ashamed

  656. to receive

  657. much smaller gifts

  658. from another person.

  659. It's all part of Jesus,

  660. your Good Shepherd's,

  661. provision for you.

  662. He's sending

  663. someone your way

  664. to let you know

  665. that he sees you

  666. and that he loves you

  667. and that he's with you

  668. and he hasn't abandoned you.

  669. If you really don't need

  670. what somebody else gives you,

  671. pay it forward.

  672. Right?

  673. Find a way to give it

  674. to somebody else.

  675. Offer the same thing

  676. to them.

  677. Pass on the blessing.

  678. Jesus feeds us with his word.

  679. He comes to meet us

  680. with his presence

  681. in very tangible

  682. and concrete ways.

  683. And he says,

  684. take heart.

  685. I'm here.

  686. Don't be afraid.

  687. Finally,

  688. the last thing we see

  689. is that Jesus

  690. pursues us

  691. to shield us from danger

  692. and bring us safely home.

  693. Verse 3 says,

  694. he restores my soul.

  695. That word restores

  696. means repairs

  697. or it could mean

  698. brings back.

  699. In other words,

  700. Jesus comes to bring us back

  701. when we've wandered away,

  702. to renew us

  703. when we've,

  704. when we're,

  705. the flame is flickering low.

  706. He leads us

  707. in passive righteousness.

  708. He prepares a table for us

  709. in the midst of our enemies.

  710. And verse 6 says,

  711. surely goodness

  712. and steadfast love

  713. will follow me.

  714. In other words,

  715. that means

  716. God's goodness

  717. and steadfast love

  718. in Jesus Christ

  719. will chase us down

  720. for the rest of our lives.

  721. You see,

  722. God doesn't merely respond

  723. to our requests.

  724. But he initiates with us

  725. and he follows through

  726. all the way to the end.

  727. We see this in Jesus' life

  728. most particularly

  729. at the end of his life

  730. and the events leading up

  731. to his death on the cross.

  732. Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14:27

  733. verse 27 and 28,

  734. Jesus said to his disciples,

  735. he said,

  736. you will all fall away

  737. for it is written,

  738. I will strike the shepherd

  739. and the sheep

  740. will be scattered.

  741. But after I am raised up,

  742. I will go before you

  743. to Galilee.

  744. In other words,

  745. Jesus goes before us

  746. in his death on the cross.

  747. And he also goes before us

  748. in his resurrection

  749. from the dead.

  750. In his death on the cross,

  751. Jesus is the good shepherd

  752. laying down his life

  753. for the sheep.

  754. And he goes before us

  755. in his resurrection

  756. when he takes up

  757. his life again

  758. as the triumphant victor

  759. over death

  760. and the grave.

  761. Jesus has overcome

  762. our greatest enemies

  763. in his death

  764. and resurrection.

  765. He has overcome

  766. the world

  767. that seeks to allure us

  768. with false hopes

  769. and false promises.

  770. He has rendered powerless

  771. the devil,

  772. the accuser

  773. who seeks to condemn us.

  774. He has defeated death

  775. like no one else

  776. ever has.

  777. But Jesus has not only

  778. defeated the world

  779. and the devil

  780. and death,

  781. the enemies

  782. outside of us,

  783. he's also

  784. conquered our sin.

  785. Because you see,

  786. sometimes we

  787. are our own

  788. worst enemy.

  789. Sometimes our own worst,

  790. sometimes our circumstances

  791. are not our greatest enemy.

  792. Other people

  793. are not our greatest enemy.

  794. Even Satan

  795. may not be

  796. our greatest enemy.

  797. Sometimes it's

  798. our own sinful nature.

  799. Our self-destructive habits

  800. that we get into.

  801. Our pride

  802. that we refuse

  803. to let go of.

  804. But you know what?

  805. On the cross,

  806. Jesus has conquered

  807. even that.

  808. He died

  809. to free us

  810. from the penalty

  811. that we deserve

  812. for our sin.

  813. And he has placed

  814. his Holy Spirit

  815. within all

  816. who believe in him

  817. so that we can be free

  818. from the power,

  819. the enslaving power

  820. of sin.

  821. And he perseveres

  822. with us to the end

  823. until a day

  824. when we will one day

  825. be free

  826. from any sin at all.

  827. When we see him

  828. face to face.

  829. You see,

  830. Jesus is our good shepherd

  831. from beginning to end.

  832. Who protects us

  833. from our enemies

  834. outside us

  835. and our enemies

  836. within us.

  837. From our own

  838. worst tendencies.

  839. It says,

  840. your rod and your staff,

  841. they comfort me.

  842. You know,

  843. as a shepherd,

  844. part of the purpose

  845. of a rod

  846. is to beat off

  847. predators,

  848. bears,

  849. and wolves

  850. that want to come

  851. and eat the sheep.

  852. But part of the purpose

  853. of a rod and the staff

  854. is to keep the sheep

  855. in line.

  856. to discipline

  857. the sheep.

  858. To bring them out

  859. of thorny bushes

  860. that they've got

  861. themselves in

  862. and pull them out.

  863. Apparently,

  864. I've heard

  865. that sometimes

  866. a shepherd

  867. will even

  868. injure a sheep

  869. temporarily

  870. if that sheep

  871. is prone

  872. to wander away

  873. into fatal danger

  874. so that the injured

  875. sheep would stay

  876. with the flock

  877. and stay with the shepherd

  878. and therefore

  879. be protected

  880. even though

  881. the sheep

  882. is limping.

  883. You see,

  884. Jesus knows

  885. the tendencies

  886. that we have

  887. to sabotage

  888. ourselves

  889. to...

  890. Jesus knows

  891. our own

  892. worst tendencies

  893. and he will

  894. even shield us

  895. by his grace

  896. from those

  897. as our good shepherd.

  898. He has come

  899. to shield us

  900. from danger

  901. and bring us

  902. safely home.

  903. So whether we're

  904. going forth

  905. boldly

  906. in mission

  907. for Jesus' sake

  908. or whether we're

  909. struggling through

  910. trials and temptations

  911. for Jesus' sake,

  912. we can be confident

  913. that Jesus,

  914. our good shepherd,

  915. has gone

  916. before us

  917. and that he

  918. pursues us.

  919. to shield us

  920. from danger

  921. and bring us

  922. safely home.

  923. And that is good news

  924. that we can count on.

  925. We can count on that

  926. in life

  927. and we can count on

  928. that in death

  929. that Jesus has gone

  930. before us.

  931. I want to close

  932. with a verse

  933. from the Apostle Paul.

  934. The Apostle Paul

  935. went forth boldly

  936. proclaiming Jesus

  937. throughout the world

  938. and the Apostle Paul

  939. faced more trials

  940. and temptations

  941. than probably

  942. almost any of us

  943. will face

  944. in our lifetime.

  945. Fightings within,

  946. fears without,

  947. he says.

  948. And when he was

  949. sitting in a cold

  950. Roman prison

  951. facing the prospect

  952. of almost certain death,

  953. he wrote the book

  954. of 2 Timothy,

  955. which is probably

  956. the last letter

  957. that he wrote.

  958. And in the book

  959. of 2 Timothy,

  960. he speaks confidently

  961. about the promise

  962. of life

  963. in Christ Jesus,

  964. the grace

  965. given us

  966. in Jesus

  967. before the beginning

  968. of time

  969. and revealed

  970. through the appearing

  971. of Jesus

  972. who destroyed death

  973. and brought life

  974. and immortality

  975. to light.

  976. And he says,

  977. God has given us

  978. a spirit

  979. not of fear

  980. but of power,

  981. of love,

  982. and of self-control.

  983. So don't be ashamed

  984. of the good news

  985. of Jesus.

  986. Go forth

  987. and proclaim it

  988. in season

  989. and out of season

  990. with great patience

  991. and careful instruction.

  992. He speaks confidently

  993. but he also speaks

  994. honestly

  995. about the hardships

  996. of living

  997. as a follower

  998. of Jesus.

  999. He says,

  1000. Timothy,

  1001. the Christian life

  1002. is like being

  1003. a loyal soldier.

  1004. It's like being

  1005. a disciplined athlete.

  1006. It's like being

  1007. a hard-working farmer.

  1008. Not easy jobs.

  1009. Not stress-free life.

  1010. He says,

  1011. God has called us

  1012. to share in suffering

  1013. for the gospel

  1014. of Jesus.

  1015. He says,

  1016. some people

  1017. have abandoned

  1018. the faith.

  1019. They've swerved

  1020. from the truth.

  1021. They get caught

  1022. in quarrels

  1023. about words.

  1024. He says,

  1025. there will be

  1026. terrible times

  1027. in the latter days.

  1028. But he ends

  1029. this letter

  1030. with these words.

  1031. 2 Timothy 4.18

  1032. The Lord

  1033. will rescue me

  1034. from every evil deed

  1035. and bring me safely

  1036. into his heavenly kingdom.

1037. To him be the glory

  1038. forever and ever.

  1039. That was Paul's,

1040. one of Paul's last words.

  1041. words.

  1042. Jesus,

  1043. my faithful shepherd,

  1044. will rescue me

  1045. from every evil attack,

  1046. every evil deed,

1047. and he will bring me

  1048. safely home.

1049. That's what we need to know

  1050. in this new year.

  1051. Let us pray.

1052. A prayer for the new year.

  1053. O love beyond compare,

  1054. you are good

  1055. when you give

1056. and when you take away.

1057. When the sun shines upon me,

  1058. when the night

  1059. gathers over me.

  1060. You have loved me

  1061. before the foundation

  1062. of the world

  1063. and in love

  1064. you redeemed my soul.

  1065. You love me still

1066. in spite of my hard heart,

  1067. my ingratitude,

  1068. my distrust.

  1069. Your goodness

  1070. has been with me

  1071. through another year,

  1072. leading me through

  1073. a twisting wilderness

  1074. in retreat,

  1075. helping me to advance

  1076. when beaten back,

  1077. making sure headway.

  1078. Your goodness

  1079. will be with me

  1080. in the year ahead.

  1081. I hoist,

  1082. sail,

  1083. and draw up anchor

  1084. with you

  1085. as the blessed pilot

  1086. of my future

  1087. as of my past.

  1088. I bless you

  1089. that you have veiled

  1090. my eyes

  1091. to the waters ahead.

  1092. If you have appointed

  1093. storms of tribulation,

1094. you will be with me

  1095. in them.

1096. If I have to pass

  1097. through tempests

  1098. of persecution

  1099. and temptation,

  1100. I shall not drown.

1101. If I am to die,

1102. I will see your face

  1103. the sooner.

  1104. If a painful end

1105. is to be my lot,

  1106. grant me grace

1107. that my faith fail not.

1108. If I am to be cast aside

1109. from the service I love,

1110. I can make no stipulation.

  1111. Only glorify yourself

  1112. in me.

  1113. Whether in comfort

  1114. or trial

  1115. as a chosen vessel

  1116. always fit

  1117. for your use.

  1118. Amen.

  1119. Well, this morning

1120. we come to the Lord's table.

  1121. To the table

  1122. of the shepherd

  1123. who laid down

  1124. his life

  1125. for us.

1126. And in the Lord's supper,

  1127. Jesus has fed us

  1128. with his word

1129. and he comes near to us

  1130. in a very concrete,

  1131. tangible,

  1132. physical way

  1133. through broken bread

  1134. and poured out juice.

  1135. Paul says,

  1136. the cup of blessing

  1137. that we bless,

1138. is it not a participation

1139. in the blood of Christ?

1140. The bread that we break,

1141. is it not a participation

1142. in the body of Christ?

  1143. In other words,

  1144. Jesus is present here

  1145. at this table,

  1146. in this fellowship,

  1147. by his Holy Spirit,

1148. so that when we receive

  1149. the bread

  1150. and the cup,

  1151. we are assured

1152. that Jesus' love for us

1153. and Jesus' promise to us

  1154. in his death

  1155. and his resurrection

  1156. is just as real,

  1157. even more real,

1158. than this piece of bread

1159. and this cup of grape juice.

  1160. Jesus has prepared

  1161. his table for us.

  1162. So if you're here,

  1163. if you're a believer

  1164. in Jesus Christ,

  1165. if he is

  1166. your good shepherd

1167. who laid down his life

1168. for you on the cross

  1169. and rose again

  1170. three days later,

1171. and if you are part

  1172. of his flock,

  1173. part of his church,

  1174. whether it's this church

  1175. or another local church,

  1176. take, eat, and drink

  1177. and be assured

  1178. of his love

  1179. for you today.

  1180. If you don't believe

  1181. in Jesus,

  1182. if you're still exploring

  1183. and working through things,

  1184. we're glad you're here today.

  1185. I hope that you'll see this

  1186. as an invitation

  1187. to consider

  1188. who Jesus is.

  1189. If you don't believe

  1190. in Jesus,

  1191. don't take the bread

  1192. and the cup,

  1193. just pass them by,

  1194. it's fine,

1195. but just take this time

  1196. to consider

  1197. what it would mean

  1198. for you

  1199. to take Jesus

  1200. as your good shepherd.

  1201. You can even pray.

  1202. Say,

  1203. Jesus, take me.

  1204. I don't want to live

  1205. my life

  1206. for myself

  1207. anymore.

  1208. I want you

  1209. to be my shepherd.

1210. I want to be yours

  1211. forever.

  1212. And he will hear

  1213. and answer that prayer.

  1214. For those who are

  1215. serving communion,

1216. come to the front now.

  1217. John,

  1218. would you give thanks

  1219. for the bread?

  1220. Thank you.

  1221. Thank you.

  1222. Lord,

  1223. how precious

  1224. the words

  1225. of this psalm.

  1226. Thank you.

  1227. Thank you.

  1228. Thank you.

  1229. Thank you.
