  1. in our series in Mark tonight.

  2. For those of you who haven't met, my name's Nick.

  3. I'm one of the pastors here.

  4. This academic year, actually,

  5. we're looking at the Gospel of Mark.

  6. We're coming up in the second half of it.

  7. This spring, we're gonna look

  8. at basically Mark 8 through 16.

  9. We're gonna finish Mark by Easter,

  10. which seems kind of like a daring feat,

  11. but we're gonna do it by God's grace.

  12. So turn with me to Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  13. It's page 843 in the Black Pew Bible,

  14. if you wanna turn there.

  15. We'll put this passage on the screen,

  16. but it's good to have it open.

  17. If you can turn there, that way,

  18. if we jump around, you can follow me.

  19. Mark chapter 8, we'll look at verses 1 through 26.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  20. Let me read this for us.

  21. So Mark 8, verse 1.

    Mark 8:1

  22. In those days when a great crowd had gathered

  23. and they had nothing to eat,

  24. he called his disciples to him and said to them,

  25. I have compassion on the crowd

  26. because they have been with me now three days

  27. and have nothing to eat.

  28. And if I send them away hungry to their homes,

  29. they will faint on the way.

  30. And some of them have come from far away.

  31. And his disciples answered him,

  32. how can one feed these people with bread

  33. here in this desolate place?

  34. And he asked them, how many loaves do you have?

  35. They said, seven.

  36. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground

  37. and he took the seven loaves

  38. and having given thanks,

  39. he broke them

  40. and gave them to his disciples

  41. to set before the people.

  42. And they set them before the crowd

  43. and they had a few small fish

  44. and having blessed them,

  45. he said that those also should be set before them.

  46. And they ate

  47. and were satisfied.

  48. And they took up the broken pieces

  49. left over seven baskets full.

  50. And there were about 4,000 people.

  51. And he sent them away

  52. and immediately got into the boat

  53. with his disciples

  54. and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

  55. And then, the Pharisees came

  56. and began to argue with him,

  57. seeking from him a sign from heaven

  58. to test him.

  59. And he sighed deeply in his spirit

  60. and said,

  61. why does this generation seek a sign?

  62. Truly I say to you,

  63. no sign will be given to this generation.

  64. And he left them,

  65. got into the boat again

  66. and went to the other side.

  67. Now they had forgotten to bring bread

  68. and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.

  69. And he cautioned them saying,

  70. watch out,

  71. beware of the leaven of the Pharisees

  72. and the leaven of Herod.

  73. And they began discussing with one another

  74. the fact that they had no bread.

  75. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them,

  76. why are you discussing the fact

  77. that you have no bread?

  78. Do you not yet perceive or understand?

  79. Are your hearts hardened?

  80. Having eyes, do you not see?

  81. And having ears, do you not hear?

  82. And do you not remember?

  83. When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000,

  84. how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?

  85. They said to him,

  86. 12.

  87. And the seven for the 4,000,

  88. how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?

  89. And they said to him,

  90. seven.

  91. And he said to them,

  92. do you not yet understand?

  93. And they came to Bethsaida.

  94. And some people brought to him a blind man

  95. and begged him to touch him.

  96. And he took the blind man by the hand

  97. and led him out of the village.

  98. And when he had spit on his eyes

  99. and laid his hands on him,

  100. he asked him,

  101. do you see anything?

  102. And he looked up and said,

  103. I see men,

  104. but they look like trees walking.

  105. Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again,

  106. and he opened his eyes.

  107. His sight was restored.

  108. And he saw everything clearly.

  109. And he sent him to his home,

  110. saying,

  111. do not even enter the village.

  112. Well, I wonder if you've ever been in a situation

  113. where someone is trying really hard

  114. to teach you something

  115. and you just can't seem to get it.

  116. If you've ever tried learning a foreign language,

  117. maybe you've had that experience.

  118. I remember when I was in divinity school,

  119. I was learning Hebrew,

  120. and I had that experience a lot, actually,

  121. learning biblical Hebrew.

  122. The first time I encountered it

  123. was when I was learning,

  124. it was like chapter three of our grammar.

  125. And you have to realize

  126. that in the Hebrew language,

  127. every single word just about

  128. comes from a three-consonant root.

  129. Every word, three consonants.

  130. It's completely baffling.

  131. I remember our teacher

  132. trying so hard

  133. to get us to understand

  134. how these three-letter roots work.

  135. Because you see, the thing is,

  136. like any language,

  137. it doesn't always play by the rules, right?

  138. Some consonants drop out,

  139. some combine with others,

  140. and some just mysteriously disappear.

  141. And here we were,

  142. sitting through our Hebrew class,

  143. utterly baffled,

  144. staring at the page of our grammar,

  145. just not getting it.

  146. And it was only week three of the course.

  147. We were in trouble.

  148. Now, maybe that hasn't happened

  149. to you learning another language,

  150. maybe learning a new skill,

  151. or learning some new idea.

  152. To be honest with you,

  153. the New Haven public bus system,

  154. how that thing works

  155. is still a bit baffling to me.

  156. Those of you who are able

  157. to ride that thing and get around,

  158. I have a lot of respect for you

  159. because I would be utterly confused

  160. where that thing was taking me.

  161. But it's like that

  162. with a lot of things, isn't it?

  163. Riding a bike,

  164. learning how to swim.

  165. You try and you try and you try,

  166. and it seems like you just can't get it.

  167. But then one day,

  168. something happens, right?

  169. One day when I was studying Hebrew,

  170. despairing,

  171. it clicked.

  172. Suddenly it made sense.

  173. The lights came on

  174. and I finally started to understand

  175. how these crazy three-letter roots

  176. actually worked.

  177. And the best way to describe it,

  178. I think,

  179. was that I could finally see it.

  180. I could see it.

  181. Have you had that experience

  182. from not understanding

  183. to understanding,

  184. from not seeing it

  185. to seeing it?

  186. Our text tonight

  187. is all about

  188. responding

  189. to Jesus Christ.

  190. Of understanding

  191. and seeing

  192. who He is.

  193. We've come to chapter 8

  194. of Mark's Gospel,

  195. as I mentioned.

  196. And you see,

  197. chapter 8 is really

  198. the turning point

  199. of the whole book.

  200. The whole book really pivots

  201. on this chapter.

  202. Everything leading up

  203. to this point,

  204. almost,

  205. has been to show us

  206. who Jesus is.

  207. Mark has been taking pains

  208. to describe to us

  209. Jesus' person,

  210. His identity.

  211. And from this chapter onward,

  212. things are going to turn,

  213. things are going to shift,

  214. and Mark's going to begin

  215. showing us

  216. why Jesus came,

  217. what He came to do,

  218. His purpose,

  219. His mission.

  220. But running underneath

  221. both of these questions

  222. and both of these halves

  223. is another question.

  224. And it's the question

  225. of how should we respond?

  226. What does it mean

  227. to believe

  228. and to follow

  229. this Jesus?

  230. So as Mark brings

  231. this first half

  232. of his Gospel

  233. to a head,

  234. we're confronted

  235. with this pressing question

  236. from Jesus Himself

  237. in verse 21.

  238. Do you not yet

  239. understand?

  240. Do you see Him?

  241. Do you know Him?

  242. Do you understand

  243. who He is?

  244. Now rewind

  245. to the beginning

  246. of our passage,

  247. the feeding of the 4,000.

  248. If you've been with us

  249. in our Mark series,

  250. this passage probably

  251. sounds kind of familiar.

  252. Do you remember

  253. back in chapter 6

  254. where Jesus did

  255. something incredibly similar?

  256. Back there

  257. with just five loaves

  258. and two fish,

  259. He fed a crowd

  260. of 5,000 men

  261. plus women and children

  262. and there were 12 baskets

  263. of bread left over.

  264. And now

  265. in our passage tonight

  266. with just seven loaves

  267. and a few small fish,

  268. He feeds over 4,000 people

  269. and there are seven baskets

  270. left over.

  271. Jesus is at it again.

  272. And you have to ask,

  273. reading Mark's gospel,

  274. what are we supposed

  275. to learn from this miracle

  276. that we didn't learn

  277. from the first miracle?

  278. After all,

  279. think about it.

  280. Presumably,

  281. Mark,

  282. the writer of this gospel,

  283. didn't include everything

  284. that he knew about Jesus

  285. into it.

  286. All of the gospel writers

  287. are being selective.

  288. They're all presenting to us

  289. what they feel to be

  290. the most important things,

  291. the things that we need to know

  292. to really understand

  293. Jesus rightly.

  294. So why does Mark include

  295. two miraculous feedings?

  296. Well, many commentators

  297. point out,

  298. and I think they're right,

  299. that one of the primary

  300. differences is this.

  301. You see,

  302. the first feeding,

  303. if you go back there

  304. and read,

  305. took place

  306. in Jewish territory.

  307. Jesus was among

  308. His own people,

  309. among the people of Israel,

  310. the people of God.

  311. But in chapter 8,

  312. He's actually now transitioned,

  313. not,

  314. no longer in Jewish territory,

  315. but He's in a Gentile region.

  316. If you have your Bible open,

  317. look back at chapter 7,

  318. verse 31.

  319. We see there that Jesus

  320. is in the region

  321. of the Decapolis,

  322. which is a Gentile region

  323. on the far side

  324. of the Sea of Galilee.

  325. And that means Jesus

  326. is among outsiders.

  327. He's among people

  328. that weren't necessarily

  329. born to the right family.

  330. He's among the pagans

  331. and the irreligious.

  332. Those who didn't have

  333. the spiritual privileges

  334. of being brought up

  335. as an Israelite.

  336. These are the people

  337. who probably don't know much

  338. about God's Word.

  339. They don't know much

  340. about God's covenant promises.

  341. And yet,

  342. here is Jesus

  343. going to the outsiders

  344. and satisfying their needs,

  345. too.

  346. Teaching them

  347. and then feeding them.

  348. You see,

  349. Jesus is showing us

  350. and Mark wants us

  351. to hear it loud and clear

  352. that the kingdom

  353. Jesus has come to bring

  354. is for everyone.

  355. For rich and for poor,

  356. for young and for old,

  357. for Jew and for Gentile,

  358. for male and for female,

  359. for insiders and outsiders,

  360. for religious people

  361. and irreligious people.

  362. He's come for them all.

  363. And all can come to him

  364. and be satisfied.

  365. Did you notice

  366. that wonderful line

  367. in verse 8?

  368. And they all ate

  369. and were satisfied.

  370. Mark tells us the same thing

  371. the first time around

  372. in chapter 6,

  373. verse 42.

  374. And they all ate

  375. and were satisfied.

  376. Jesus is the satisfier

  377. of souls.

  378. And that goes for you

  379. and that goes for me.

  380. There is one

  381. that satisfies

  382. and it is Jesus.

  383. He's showing them

  384. with bread

  385. a truth about who he is

  386. and what he's come to do.

  387. A truth about his kingdom

  388. that in Jesus

  389. God has come

  390. to bring satisfaction

  391. to weary

  392. and hungry souls

  393. and he's come to do it

  394. for all people.

  395. Now that's what we learn

  396. about Jesus

  397. in this passage.

  398. But I think Mark

  399. also wants to show us

  400. something about the disciples.

  401. And by implication

  402. he wants to show us

  403. something about us

  404. and what it means

  405. to respond to Jesus.

  406. Now put yourself

  407. in the disciples' shoes

  408. for a second

  409. in this story.

  410. You're in a deserted place.

  411. Jesus is teaching

  412. large crowds.

  413. People are getting hungry.

  414. There's not enough food.

  415. And this all sounds

  416. and feels very familiar

  417. to you.

  418. You're thinking

  419. we were in this situation

  420. not so long ago.

  421. And Jesus says to you

  422. I have compassion

  423. on these people

  424. because they've been with me.

  425. They're getting hungry

  426. and I can't send them away.

  427. Now,

  428. as readers of the Gospel

  429. of Mark

  430. what do you want

  431. the disciples to say?

  432. Jesus,

  433. you can feed them?

  434. We've seen you do it

  435. just two chapters ago.

  436. Of course they wouldn't

  437. have said two chapters.

  438. Maybe it was a few months.

  439. Maybe even a year ago.

  440. We know you can feed them.

  441. We trust you.

  442. Just tell us what to do.

  443. We're ready.

  444. We're expectant.

  445. Come on, Jesus.

  446. Do it again.

  447. But that's not how

  448. they respond.

  449. Instead they say

  450. who's going to feed

  451. all these people

  452. with bread

  453. in this desolate place?

  454. And of course

  455. we as readers think

  456. oh,

  457. how obtuse

  458. can these disciples be?

  459. I mean,

  460. come on.

  461. how could they not

  462. put the pieces together?

  463. But you know,

  464. when we stop

  465. and think about it,

  466. aren't you and I

  467. often the same?

  468. How many of us

  469. have seen the Lord

  470. work in our lives

  471. in very clear ways?

  472. But then a little

  473. further down the road

  474. a new situation arises

  475. and instead of our faith

  476. being stronger

  477. and responding

  478. in deeper trust

  479. to the Lord,

  480. it's like we've

  481. completely forgotten.

  482. And we respond

  483. the same way

  484. we did the first time

  485. with questions

  486. and doubt

  487. and fear.

  488. Is God really there?

  489. Does He care for me?

  490. Is He in control?

  491. One writer reflecting

  492. on this passage

  493. put it this way.

  494. He said,

  495. Mark is showing us

  496. how great

  497. is human spiritual blindness.

  498. The disciples

  499. continually fail

  500. to apply

  501. what they know

  502. of Jesus

  503. to new situations

  504. and that

  505. is the definition

  506. of unbelief.

  507. Failing to apply

  508. what they know

  509. of Jesus

  510. in new situations.

  511. Friends,

  512. if you're here tonight

  513. and you're a Christian,

  514. you need to be aware

  515. that your heart

  516. will constantly

  517. be tempted

  518. to doubt Jesus

  519. again and again

  520. and again.

  521. You know He's

  522. the satisfier of your soul.

  523. You know He's

  524. the good shepherd

  525. who cares for the sheep

  526. and yet there will be times

  527. when you and I

  528. are thrown into situations,

  529. maybe situations

  530. just like you've been in before

  531. and your heart

  532. will start to doubt

  533. His love

  534. and His power

  535. and His care for you

  536. and you won't expect Him

  537. to work

  538. and you'll wonder

  539. whether He's even there

  540. and in that moment

  541. here's what you need to do.

  542. Not trust your heart

  543. and not trust

  544. your doubts

  545. and fears.

  546. This is a sign

  547. of spiritual maturity

  548. when we see

  549. that our hearts

  550. are prone to doubt

  551. and prone to forget

  552. and instead of listening

  553. to those doubts

  554. and fears

  555. we instead work hard

  556. to remember

  557. what He's done

  558. and to view

  559. our current situation

  560. in light

  561. of what we know

  562. to be true

  563. about Him.

  564. Now this theme

  565. of unbelief

  566. or of partial belief

  567. you probably picked it up

  568. it continues

  569. through the rest

  570. of the passage

  571. doesn't it?

  572. And each part

  573. is sort of instructing us

  574. how we ought to respond

  575. to Jesus.

  576. First Jesus gets out

  577. of the boat

  578. and the first thing

  579. that happens

  580. is that the Pharisees

  581. come to Him

  582. and they confront Him

  583. and Mark says

  584. they argue with Him

  585. seeking from Him

  586. a sign from Heaven

  587. to test Him.

  588. And Jesus' response

  589. is to sigh deeply

  590. and says

  591. in essence

  592. no sign

  593. is going to be given you.

  594. Of course

  595. there's a bit of an irony

  596. here isn't it?

  597. Isn't there?

  598. Jesus has been doing

  599. incredible things

  600. His whole ministry.

  601. He's just fed

  602. 4,000 people

  603. with seven loaves of bread.

  604. So what exactly

  605. are the Pharisees

  606. looking for

  607. and why won't Jesus

  608. give it to them?

  609. Well in answer

  610. to the first question

  611. it seems that the Pharisees

  612. want Jesus to give them

  613. some sort of extreme

  614. supernatural proof

  615. a sign from Heaven

  616. that He is indeed

  617. the Messiah.

  618. But you have to see

  619. a little deeper

  620. under what's going on here.

  621. You have to see

  622. that they're only

  623. asking Him this

  624. right as Mark says

  625. to test Him.

  626. You see they've already

  627. made up their minds

  628. about Jesus.

  629. They think He's a fraud

  630. or they think

  631. He's demon possessed

  632. or whatever

  633. and now they think

  634. they're going to ask Him

  635. to jump through a hoop

  636. so high

  637. that He's bound

  638. to fail

  639. or at least

  640. that's what they think.

  641. But Jesus refuses

  642. to play their game.

  643. Why?

  644. Could He have done

  645. something amazingly

  646. supernatural?

  647. Of course.

  648. He just calmed

  649. an entire storm

  650. a few chapters ago.

  651. Why doesn't Jesus

  652. do something

  653. amazingly supernatural?

  654. You see because

  655. Jesus knows

  656. that no amount

  657. of external evidence

  658. even miraculous evidence

  659. can break through

  660. some kinds

  661. of spiritual blindness.

  662. Remember

  663. this section

  664. is all about

  665. seeing Jesus

  666. and responding

  667. to Him.

  668. I mean after all

  669. Jesus had been doing

  670. remarkable things.

  671. He had been doing

  672. signs of a certain

  673. kind, right?

  674. Healing the sick,

  675. feeding the hungry,

  676. causing the blind

  677. to see,

  678. comforting the outcasts,

  679. seeking out sinners

  680. and calling them

  681. to repentance

  682. and fellowship

  683. with God.

  684. But you see

  685. that's not

  686. the kind

  687. of Messiah

  688. that the Pharisees

  689. wanted.

  690. That kind of Messiah

  691. didn't fit

  692. their grid.

  693. They wanted

  694. a Messiah

  695. that would keep

  696. all the traditions

  697. that they kept

  698. and they wanted

  699. a king

  700. that would be

  701. scrupulous

  702. about ceremonial

  703. purity

  704. just as they

  705. defined it.

  706. But you see

  707. God's kingdom

  708. as Jesus defines it

  709. and as it is

  710. truly

  711. is for everyone.

  712. As we've said

  713. Jew and Gentile

  714. clean and unclean

  715. it's for everyone

  716. who stops trusting

  717. in their own

  718. moral performance

  719. and their own

  720. cleanliness

  721. and trusts

  722. in Jesus alone.

  723. So Jesus refuses

  724. to give them

  725. a sign

  726. because he knows

  727. their hearts.

  728. Now does that

  729. mean that Jesus

  730. doesn't encourage

  731. us today

  732. as seekers

  733. to look at

  734. the evidence

  735. and to seek

  736. for the truth

  737. and even to ask

  738. questions along

  739. the way

  740. and to try

  741. this thing out

  742. to see whether

  743. it holds water?

  744. Is Jesus saying

  745. no, don't do

  746. any of that?

  747. Of course not,

  748. right?

  749. Throughout the

  750. gospels he's

  751. encouraging people

  752. to come to him

  753. and look at him

  754. and test him out.

  755. You see,

  756. here's something

  757. that we often

  758. get confused about.

  759. We often think

  760. that faith

  761. is some kind

  762. of leap in the dark

  763. and in fact

  764. reading a lot

  765. of commentators

  766. on this chapter

  767. this week,

  768. that's basically

  769. what a lot

  770. of commentators

  771. said that Jesus

  772. was doing here.

  773. He's saying

  774. that no,

  775. faith is sort of

  776. you just have

  777. to take a leap.

  778. Friends,

  779. that's not at all

  780. what Jesus

  781. is saying here.

  782. He's saying

  783. that faith

  784. involves

  785. something more

  786. than just

  787. evidence.

  788. Does it look

  789. at the evidence

  790. and investigate

  791. it and move

  792. on the basis

  793. of it?

  794. Yes.

  795. But faith

  796. also involves

  797. your heart.

  798. And if our

  799. heart is filled

  800. with all sorts

  801. of biases

  802. and presuppositions

  803. and if we've

  804. already made

  805. up our mind,

  806. then friends,

  807. no amount

  808. of evidence

  809. is going to

  810. overcome it.

  811. faith.

  812. Because you see,

  813. faith is more

  814. than acknowledging

  815. the truth

  816. of a fact.

  817. Faith is

  818. commitment

  819. to a person.

  820. And if there's

  821. no openness

  822. to that sort

  823. of commitment,

  824. if that door

  825. has already

  826. been shut,

  827. and if like

  828. the Pharisees

  829. were simply

  830. looking for ways

  831. to debunk

  832. Jesus'

  833. claims,

  834. then Jesus

  835. knows that

  836. signs are

  837. pointless.

  838. You see,

  839. the problem

  840. with the Pharisees

  841. is that they

  842. were determining

  843. the definition

  844. of the Messiah

  845. themselves,

  846. and they were

  847. putting up

  848. their own

  849. criteria that

  850. this Messiah

  851. had to fit,

  852. and then,

  853. of course,

  854. they took

  855. their own

  856. standards and

  857. their own

  858. criteria,

  859. and Jesus

  860. fell short.

  861. And when Jesus

  862. gets into the

  863. boat with

  864. his disciples,

  865. what does

  866. he say?

  867. He says,

  868. watch out for

  869. that sort of

  870. thinking.

  871. He says,

  872. it's like

  873. leaven.

  874. It's like

  875. yeast that

  876. spreads everywhere

  877. and affects

  878. everything.

  879. Because don't

  880. we often do

  881. the same thing?

  882. How often do

  883. we have similar

  884. thoughts run

  885. through our

  886. minds?

  887. God, if you

  888. loved me,

  889. then you would

  890. do this.

  891. You'd show me

  892. a sign.

  893. You'd solve

  894. this problem

  895. in my life.

  896. You'd get me

  897. that job.

  898. You'd bring me

  899. a spouse.

  900. Jesus, if you

  901. were really God,

  902. then you'd fix

  903. this or that.

  904. You'd stop the

  905. pain I'm feeling.

  906. Etc.

  907. Etc.

  908. You see how

  909. easy it is to

  910. fall into this

  911. trap?

  912. But it can be

  913. like yeast.

  914. It starts to

  915. spread.

  916. And suddenly,

  917. we're calling

  918. the shots,

  919. and we're setting

  920. the standards

  921. that God has

  922. to meet.

  923. And if God

  924. doesn't jump

  925. through our

  926. hopes,

  927. then we start

  928. to turn away.

  929. God wants

  930. to come to

  931. Him and

  932. pour out our

  933. hearts to

  934. Him.

  935. But as soon

  936. as these

  937. desires of

  938. our hearts

  939. become the

  940. criteria,

  941. the test,

  942. that God

  943. has to

  944. meet,

  945. friends,

  946. then our

  947. hearts are

  948. in a

  949. dangerous

  950. place.

  951. Instead,

  952. let Him

  953. define the

  954. criteria.

  955. And have

  956. your eyes

  957. open to

  958. what He's

  959. already done

  960. to demonstrate

  961. His love

  962. and His

  963. power toward

  964. you.

  965. Now, of

  966. course, all

  967. this talk

  968. about leaven

  969. and about

  970. yeast makes

  971. the disciples

  972. think that

  973. Jesus is

  974. talking about

  975. physical bread.

  976. And they

  977. start to think

  978. that Jesus

  979. is correcting

  980. them because

  981. they forgot

  982. to pick up

  983. some lunch

  984. before they

  985. got into

  986. the boat.

  987. And Jesus

  988. says,

  989. don't you

  990. get it?

  991. Don't you

  992. get it?

  993. It's not

  994. about bread.

  995. It's about

  996. who I am.

  997. And then He

  998. reminds them of

  999. what they have

  1000. just experienced,

  1001. 12 baskets

  1002. left over from

  1003. 5,000.

  1004. Seven baskets

  1005. left over from

  1006. 4,000.

  1007. Imagine what that

  1008. must have felt

  1009. like in their

  1010. minds.

  1011. Twelve disciples,

  1012. you feed a

  1013. crowd of 5,000

  1014. people with

  1015. tiny amounts

  1016. of food,

  1017. and at the

  1018. end you're

  1019. all standing

  1020. there with a

  1021. basket full

  1022. of bread.

  1023. In your arms

  1024. the evidence

  1025. that Christ

  1026. is no mere

  1027. man.

  1028. And then

  1029. weeks or

  1030. months later

  1031. you've got

  1032. seven loaves

  1033. for 4,000

  1034. people,

  1035. and at

  1036. the end

  1037. of that

  1038. experience

  1039. you're

  1040. holding

  1041. seven

  1042. baskets,

  1043. each one

  1044. of those

  1045. loaves

  1046. having turned

  1047. into an

  1048. abundance.

  1049. The Greek

  1050. word there

  1051. actually,

  1052. one translator

  1053. translates it

  1054. a hamper,

  1055. a hamper

  1056. full of

  1057. bread.

  1058. Adela Collins

  1059. actually from

  1060. the Divinity

  1061. School translates

  1062. it as a

  1063. hamper full

  1064. of bread.

  1065. It's a lot

  1066. of bread.

  1067. Jesus says,

  1068. don't you

  1069. see who I

  1070. am?

  1071. I'm trying

  1072. to show

  1073. you.

  1074. What is it

  1075. that's going

  1076. to turn the

  1077. lights on?

  1078. If Jesus

  1079. is the

  1080. satisfier of

  1081. our souls,

  1082. if he's

  1083. God come

  1084. down to

  1085. us to

  1086. bring us

  1087. back to

  1088. himself,

  1089. how do

  1090. we come

  1091. to believe

  1092. it?

  1093. And that

  1094. brings us

  1095. to the

  1096. last section

  1097. of our

  1098. passage

  1099. tonight.

  1100. This very

  1101. unique,

  1102. two-stage

  1103. healing of

  1104. this blind

  1105. man at

  1106. Bethsaida.

  1107. Now,

  1108. Jesus is

  1109. giving,

  1110. obviously,

  1111. his disciples

  1112. an object

  1113. lesson here.

  1114. Certainly,

  1115. Jesus could

  1116. have healed

  1117. this man

  1118. all at once.

  1119. At this

  1120. point in

  1121. Jesus'

  1122. ministry,

  1123. in Mark's

  1124. gospel,

  1125. I mean,

  1126. he's done

  1127. incredible

  1128. things,

  1129. right?

  1130. He's calmed

  1131. storms and

  1132. cast out

  1133. legions of

  1134. demons and

  1135. fed thousands

  1136. of people

  1137. and made

  1138. blind people

  1139. to see

  1140. and mute

  1141. people to

  1142. speak and

  1143. lame people

  1144. to dance.

  1145. With just

  1146. a word,

  1147. he could

  1148. have opened

  1149. this man's

  1150. eyes,

  1151. but instead,

  1152. he's teaching

  1153. us a lesson.

  1154. You see,

  1155. the disciples

  1156. had begun

  1157. to see.

  1158. They'd begun

  1159. to have their

  1160. eyes open

  1161. to who Jesus

  1162. is,

  1163. and yet,

  1164. they didn't

  1165. see it all

  1166. clearly.

  1167. They were

  1168. kind of like

  1169. this man.

  1170. You know,

  1171. at one stage

  1172. of the healing,

  1173. he could see

  1174. people,

  1175. sort of,

  1176. but it was

  1177. all a bit

  1178. blurry,

  1179. like trees

  1180. walking around,

  1181. he says,

  1182. which is a

  1183. great little

  1184. detail.

  1185. And the

  1186. disciples in

  1187. Mark's gospel

  1188. see Jesus,

  1189. and they kind

  1190. of begin to

  1191. understand who

  1192. he is,

  1193. but it's not

  1194. totally clear

  1195. yet.

  1196. And next

  1197. week,

  1198. we'll see

  1199. that even

  1200. when Peter

  1201. makes his

  1202. great declaration

  1203. at the heart

  1204. of Mark's

  1205. gospel,

  1206. people,

  1207. that you,

  1208. Jesus,

  1209. are the

  1210. Christ,

  1211. you are

  1212. the Messiah,

  1213. immediately

  1214. find out

  1215. that his

  1216. vision is

  1217. still a bit

  1218. blurry.

  1219. But then,

  1220. comes a

  1221. second stage.

  1222. Jesus lays

  1223. his hands

  1224. on his

  1225. eyes again,

  1226. and his

  1227. vision is

  1228. completely

  1229. restored,

  1230. and he

  1231. finally

  1232. sees.

  1233. You see,

  1234. friends,

  1235. the point

  1236. is this,

  1237. Jesus isn't

  1238. just the

  1239. satisfier of

  1240. our souls.

  1241. But he

  1242. is the

  1243. opener of

  1244. our eyes.

  1245. He's the

  1246. one who

  1247. grants us

  1248. the sight

  1249. to see

  1250. him and

  1251. know him.

  1252. And that

  1253. means three

  1254. things as we

  1255. close tonight.

  1256. First,

  1257. if we're

  1258. going to

  1259. approach

  1260. Jesus at

  1261. all,

  1262. if we're

  1263. going to

  1264. make any

  1265. spiritual

  1266. progress,

  1267. if our

  1268. searching

  1269. after God

  1270. is going

  1271. to make

  1272. any

  1273. headway,

  1274. then there

  1275. has to

  1276. be

  1277. humility.

  1278. We have

  1279. to admit

  1280. that our

  1281. vision is

  1282. skewed,

  1283. that we

  1284. don't see

  1285. things clearly,

  1286. and that we

  1287. need to

  1288. have our

  1289. eyes opened,

  1290. that we

  1291. bring with

  1292. us all

  1293. sorts of

  1294. biases and

  1295. presuppositions that

  1296. may be right or

  1297. may be wrong,

  1298. and we have to

  1299. be ready,

  1300. unlike the

  1301. Pharisees,

  1302. to let those

  1303. things be

  1304. questioned and

  1305. challenged in

  1306. the light of

  1307. who God has

  1308. revealed himself to

  1309. be in Christ.

  1310. Second,

  1311. if Jesus is the

  1312. opener of our

  1313. eyes,

  1314. it means that

  1315. being a

  1316. Christian,

  1317. friends,

  1318. is all

  1319. of grace.

  1320. You and

  1321. I cannot

  1322. take credit

  1323. for believing

  1324. in Jesus as

  1325. if that somehow

  1326. makes us better

  1327. than other

  1328. folk.

  1329. It makes us

  1330. incredibly humble

  1331. people to

  1332. know that it

  1333. was Christ who

  1334. opened our

  1335. eyes, not

  1336. me who pulled

  1337. myself up by

  1338. my smarty

  1339. bootstraps and

  1340. figured it out.

  1341. But doesn't

  1342. that also make

  1343. us very hopeful,

  1344. people?

  1345. that if Jesus

  1346. is the eye

  1347. opener, and

  1348. if he can

  1349. open my

  1350. dull eyes,

  1351. then surely

  1352. he can do it

  1353. for anyone

  1354. else.

  1355. And that

  1356. brings us to

  1357. the third

  1358. point.

  1359. And the

  1360. third point is

  1361. that it's

  1362. Jesus.

  1363. Our passage

  1364. begins with

  1365. Jesus saying,

  1366. I have

  1367. compassion on

  1368. the crowds.

  1369. And don't

  1370. you see that

  1371. his compassion

  1372. for us is

  1373. so great that

  1374. he not only

  1375. feeds our

  1376. souls, but

  1377. opens our

  1378. eyes.

  1379. He not just

  1380. gives bread to

  1381. the weary, but

  1382. he gives a

  1383. sight so we

  1384. can see it and

  1385. so we can

  1386. take it.

  1387. In other

  1388. words, friend,

  1389. the picture of

  1390. Jesus that we

  1391. have here is

  1392. that he is an

  1393. utterly complete

  1394. savior.

  1395. That he

  1396. accomplishes our

  1397. salvation, and

  1398. he applies it,

  1399. and he brings it

  1400. to us.

  1401. That what he's

  1402. done for us on

  1403. the cross,

  1404. he doesn't

  1405. just leave

  1406. there for

  1407. anyone who's

  1408. sort of strong

  1409. enough to go

  1410. get it, but

  1411. he brings it

  1412. to us and

  1413. opens up our

  1414. eyes so that

  1415. we can take

  1416. it and take

  1417. him.

  1418. Friends, you

  1419. want to see

  1420. tonight?

  1421. Then you have

  1422. to come to the

  1423. sight giver.

  1424. You have to

  1425. come to Jesus.

  1426. Tonight, are you

  1427. struggling to

  1428. trust him and

  1429. to believe him?

  1430. And brothers and

  1431. sisters, instead of

  1432. demanding a sign to

  1433. test him, humbly

  1434. ask him to open

  1435. your eyes to

  1436. see what's really

  1437. going on.

  1438. And that kind of

  1439. prayer, he will

  1440. always answer, and

  1441. he will not turn

  1442. you away.

  1443. Let's pray.

  1444. Jesus, you know

  1445. our hearts tonight.

  1446. Lord, you know that

1447. some of us here are

  1448. feeling weary and

  1449. hungry.

  1450. God, we've been

  1451. searching for

  1452. satisfaction in

  1453. things.

  1454. Lord, in coming up

  1455. empty.

  1456. God, we've been

  1457. looking for it in

  1458. friends and in

  1459. work.

  1460. God, we've been

  1461. looking for it in

  1462. pleasures and in

  1463. experiments.

  1464. God, tonight, as we

  1465. look into our hearts,

  1466. we see that it's

  1467. empty.

  1468. And Lord, we need

  1469. the bread that only

  1470. you can give.

  1471. So God, for those

  1472. here tonight who are

  1473. in that position, I

  1474. pray that they would

  1475. come to you and

  1476. find you.

  1477. Lord, that you would

  1478. grant them the

  1479. sight to see, that

  1480. you can satisfy

  1481. their souls, that

  1482. what you've done for

  1483. them on the cross

  1484. and in the

  1485. resurrection is

  1486. enough for them for

  1487. all eternity.

  1488. God, grant them the

  1489. vision to see you

  1490. clearly.

  1491. And God, for those

  1492. who are here tonight

  1493. who are wrestling with

  1494. their circumstances, who

  1495. are wrestling to

  1496. trust you, God, would

  1497. you too give them

  1498. vision to see, to

  1499. see your presence

  1500. with them, to see

  1501. that you have loved

  1502. them with an

  1503. everlasting love, that

1504. on the cross you have

  1505. demonstrated your love

  1506. in fullest degree for

  1507. all who come and

  1508. receive it.

1509. God, help us to be a

  1510. people who are deeply

  1511. dependent on you.

  1512. God, increase our

  1513. faith for your

  1514. name's sake.

  1515. Amen.
