  1. Hebrews chapter 6 verse 4 through 12, but we're jumping in in the middle of a paragraph if you

    Hebrews 6:4–12

  2. look in the Bible, but in the middle of the author's train of thought. So I want to step

  3. back to 6.1 and start reading at verse 1 so we can catch a little bit of the bigger picture

  4. of what is going on in this passage. So Hebrews chapter 6, I'll be reading verses 1 through 12.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  5. The author writes this, he says,

  6. in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift,

  7. and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the

  8. powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away to restore them again to repentance,

  9. since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

  10. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for

  11. whose sake it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles,

  12. it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. Though we speak in this way,

  13. yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things, things that belong to salvation.

  14. For God is not unjust, so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name

  15. in serving the saints as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness,

  16. to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish,

  17. but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

  18. Several years ago, I was meeting with the former pastor of this church, Josh Moody.

  19. For many years, Pastor Josh invested a lot of time in meeting with me regularly, in mentoring me,

  20. praying for me, and gradually giving me opportunities to serve and teach in this church.

  21. And one day we were talking, and he said to me,

  22. one of the hardest things about preaching is that you want to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

  23. In fact, many passages of scripture seem designed to do just that.

  24. But the problem is, when you preach a message of comfort for those who are afflicted,

  25. the people who are comfortable in their complacency hear it and feel justified in their complacency.

  26. And then when you preach a message of warning to the complacent,

  27. the people who are afflicted hear it and feel even more discouraged and afflicted by the warning.

  28. He said it's hard to get the message across to the people who really need to hear it.

  29. Now this morning's passage contains both a warning to awaken the complacent,

  30. as well as a comfort to strengthen believers who are afflicted.

  31. And this passage is not easy to understand and apply rightly.

  32. Throughout church history, it has often been misunderstood.

  33. And we too are prone to misunderstand some parts of it.

  34. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit saw fit to inspire the author of Hebrews to write these words,

  35. not only for the original hearers, but also for our benefit.

  36. So as we prepare to dive into this sometimes difficult passage, let's pray together.

  37. Almighty God, we pray that you would open our hearts and our minds by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  38. that as we look into this passage, into the warning, as well as the comfort,

  39. that we may hear clearly what you have spoken,

  40. and that we may apply it to our hearts and our lives, as you desire.

  41. For your glory, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  42. So before we jump into this passage, let me set the broader context just a little bit.

  43. Last week, Pastor Nick preached on chapter 5, verse 11, through chapter 6, verse 3.

  44. And this is sort of the beginning of the section that he's in.

  45. Now the writer begins, if you look up in chapter 5, verse 11,

  46. he begins by addressing a problem in the community that he's writing to.

  47. He says, you have become dull of hearing.

  48. And that word dull could mean lazy or sluggish or complacent.

  49. And so he urges them in chapter 6, verse 1,

  50. And then in verse 4 through 12, the author gives two reasons why we should go on toward maturity

  51. and not remain complacent and stagnant.

  52. He gives a word of warning in verse 4 through 8,

  53. and then a word of comfort in verse 9 through 12.

  54. And then at the end of the passage, chapter 6, verse 12,

  55. he reminds us of the purpose of everything he said.

  56. He said, all this I've said so that you may not be sluggish.

  57. That's actually the same word that he translated dull,

  58. that was translated dull back in chapter 5, verse 11.

  59. So at the beginning and the end of the passage, he's addressing the same issue.

  60. He's saying this is so that you may not be sluggish or complacent,

  61. but through faith and patience inherit the promises of God.

  62. So that's sort of the big picture of our passage today.

  63. There's a warning to the complacent,

  64. and there's a comforting word for God's people.

  65. And it's all part of an exhortation not to be complacent,

  66. but to press on toward maturity in Christ.

  67. Now this passage is primarily directed toward people

  68. who have already identified themselves as Christians.

  69. But if you're here today, if you're not a Christian,

  70. if you're spiritually exploring or searching,

  71. I hope this passage will be helpful to you as well.

  72. In particular, this passage may give you insight into the nature of the Christian life,

  73. both the challenges that Christians face,

  74. as well as the comforts that Christians hold on to.

  75. But even more than that, I hope you'll see in this passage

  76. the character of the God that Christians believe in.

  77. So first, let's look at the warning in chapter verses 4 through 8.

  78. Now, this is not the first warning passage in the book of Hebrews.

  79. If you were here for our last fall, when we started the book of Hebrews,

  80. we looked at a warning in chapter 2, as well as in chapter 3.

  81. In chapter 2, he says, chapter 2, verse 1 through 4,

  82. he says, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard,

  83. to the message of Christ,

  84. so that we do not drift away from it.

  85. And the image is of a boat without an anchor,

  86. drifting slowly down the stream,

  87. and eventually ending up far away from its original destination.

  88. Chapters 3 and 4, he gives another warning.

  89. And there he says,

  90. take care, brothers and sisters,

  91. lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart,

  92. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  93. But exhort one another every day,

  94. so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  95. So there are the images of a heart

  96. that gradually grows hardened in its resistance towards God.

  97. And there he gives the example of the people of Israel,

  98. who had been rescued from slavery in Egypt

  99. and brought out into the wilderness.

  100. And they heard God's word,

  101. they saw God's power,

  102. but over and over they did not trust God.

  103. They did not believe in Him,

  104. they did not obey Him.

  105. And as a result,

  106. many of them did not enter the promised land.

  107. And as we'll see,

  108. some of these themes from these two prior warnings

  109. come up again in this passage.

  110. So as we look at this warning

  111. in verse 4 through 8 of chapter 6,

  112. we might first ask,

  113. well, what does this warning mean?

  114. Well, the clearest thing it means

  115. is that spiritually speaking,

  116. there is what we might call

  117. a point of no return.

  118. In other words,

  119. if you drift far enough downstream in the boat,

  120. eventually you will come

  121. to a point of no return,

  122. where the current will take you over

  123. the spiritual equivalent of Niagara Falls.

  124. And the result will be

  125. certain and unavoidable destruction,

  126. without any hope

  127. of being rescued or restored.

  128. Now this is a terrifying warning,

  129. but it's the very clear teaching

  130. of this passage.

  131. Verses 4 through 6 are one long sentence,

  132. but the main clause says,

  133. it is impossible,

  134. in the case of certain people,

  135. to restore them to repentance.

  136. He doesn't just say it's difficult

  137. or unlikely or unusual,

  138. he says impossible.

  139. Now this is not the only passage

  140. in Scripture that teaches such a thing.

  141. In Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  142. Jesus himself says,

  143. all kinds of sins

  144. will be forgiven,

  145. the children of man,

  146. and whatever blasphemies they utter.

  147. But whoever blasphemes

  148. against the Holy Spirit

  149. never has forgiveness,

  150. but is guilty of an eternal sin.

  151. In other words,

  152. there is a point of no return,

  153. spiritually speaking.

  154. Now over the years,

  155. different people have come to me,

  156. and they've said to me,

  157. I'm worried that I have crossed this line.

  158. I'm worried that,

  159. according to this passage,

  160. there's no more hope for me,

  161. and I'm forever lost.

  162. What do I do?

  163. Now if there is a point of no return,

  164. it's a good question to ask.

  165. Who exactly is this verse talking about?

  166. How can you know

  167. if you've crossed that line?

  168. Well, in order to answer that question,

  169. we need to look carefully

  170. at how Hebrews describes these people.

  171. In verse 4 through 6,

  172. and he describes them in two ways.

  173. First, he describes them

  174. as people who have experienced

  175. rich blessings

  176. in the context of a community

  177. of believers.

  178. Now very much like

  179. the Israelite community

  180. who as a group

  181. had experienced God's deliverance

  182. from slavery in Egypt.

  183. And in fact,

  184. the terms he used here

  185. would have reminded his hearers

  186. of Israel's experience

  187. in the wilderness.

  188. So he says,

  189. they've been enlightened.

  190. Well, the people of Israel

  191. had seen God's glory

  192. descending on Mount Sinai

  193. in fire and smoke.

  194. They were led through the wilderness

  195. by the pillar of cloud by day

  196. and the pillar of fire by night.

  197. He says,

  198. they had tasted the heavenly gift.

  199. The people of Israel

  200. had tasted the manna from heaven,

  201. bread from heaven

  202. that God had provided for them.

  203. It says,

  204. they shared in the Holy Spirit.

  205. Well, Moses

  206. and the 70 elders of Israel

  207. were filled with the Spirit

  208. and their Spirit-led leadership

  209. benefited the whole community.

  210. He says,

  211. they not only heard God's word,

  212. but they saw evidence

  213. of God's power

  214. parting the Red Sea,

  215. providing water from the rock,

  216. defeating their enemies.

  217. And in a similar way,

  218. this passage is describing people

  219. who have experienced

  220. rich blessings

  221. in the context of a community

  222. of believers.

  223. So from their outward appearance,

  224. from a human perspective,

  225. these people would appear

  226. to be Christians.

  227. Right?

  228. They've been baptized.

  229. They've received the Lord's Supper.

  230. They've had powerful

  231. spiritual experiences.

  232. They've enjoyed

  233. some of the benefits

  234. of being involved

  235. in the Christian community.

  236. They've not only heard

  237. the word of God

  238. from reliable messengers,

  239. they've seen evidence

  240. right in front of their eyes

  241. of its truth and power

  242. and goodness.

  243. But then he says in verse 6,

  244. they have fallen away.

  245. And the emphasis here

  246. is on the contrast

  247. between God's generosity

  248. and kindness

  249. toward these people

  250. and their utterly ungrateful response.

  251. In other words,

  252. God has exposed these people

  253. to numerous spiritual blessings,

  254. most especially the message

  255. that God loved the world

  256. so much that he sent his son,

  257. Jesus Christ,

  258. who willingly came into the world

  259. and willingly died on the cross

  260. as a sacrifice for sinners.

  261. But after having publicly

  262. embraced this message

  263. and identified with

  264. the Christian community,

  265. their response is to crucify

  266. the Son of God once again.

  267. In other words,

  268. to publicly and definitively

  269. reject him.

  270. And in their public rejection

  271. of Jesus,

  272. to scorn him before the world.

  273. Verses 7 and 8

  274. present the same contrast.

  275. There are two kinds of land.

  276. Both kinds of land

  277. are watered by the rain

  278. and cultivated

  279. by the goodness of God.

  280. But the land in verse 8

  281. bears only thorns and thistles.

  282. No good fruit.

  283. And in the end,

  284. he says,

  285. it is only fit for burning.

  286. In Jesus' parable of the sower,

  287. which we heard earlier,

  288. the seed of God's word

  289. is sown everywhere

  290. on all four kinds of soil.

  291. On the hard ground,

  292. on the rocky ground,

  293. on the thorny ground,

  294. as well as on the good soil.

  295. And so in all these examples,

  296. God is shown to be

  297. not only righteous and just

  298. in his judgment,

  299. but generous

  300. and loving

  301. and kind

  302. far more than any of us deserve.

  303. But despite God's generosity

  304. and his kindness

  305. and his love,

  306. it says that these people

  307. have fallen away.

  308. Now when this passage

  309. talks about falling away,

  310. it's not talking about

  311. a temporary relapse,

  312. but an ongoing

  313. and permanent condition.

  314. John Calvin said this,

  315. he said,

  316. the writer is not talking here

  317. about theft

  318. or lying

  319. or even murder

  320. or drunkenness

  321. or adultery.

  322. He is referring to

  323. a complete falling away

  324. from the gospel

  325. in which the sinner

  326. has offended God

  327. not in one respect only,

  328. but has utterly

  329. renounced his grace.

  330. Now in the Bible,

  331. there are several examples

  332. of believers

  333. in both the Old and New Testament

  334. who fall into

  335. serious and damaging

  336. patterns of sin,

  337. sometimes even

  338. for extended periods of time.

  339. But eventually,

  340. the Holy Spirit

  341. convicts them of sin.

  342. They're never totally satisfied

  343. in their patterns of sin.

  344. And eventually,

  345. they turn back to God

  346. and they repent

  347. and they ask for forgiveness.

  348. And you know,

  349. the New Testament says

  350. it's not,

  351. it doesn't just say

  352. forgiveness is possible

  353. if we repent.

  354. It says forgiveness

  355. is promised

  356. to all

  357. who repent.

  358. To repent

  359. simply means

  360. to turn

  361. to Jesus.

  362. If we confess

  363. our sins,

  364. God is faithful

  365. and just

  366. to forgive our sins

  367. and purify us

  368. from all unrighteousness

  369. because Jesus Christ

  370. is the atoning

  371. sacrifice

  372. for sin.

  373. And His blood

  374. covers anyone

  375. and everyone

  376. who turns to Him.

  377. And the writer of Hebrews

  378. is in full agreement

  379. with this promise.

  380. Notice what he says here.

  381. He does not say

  382. it is impossible

  383. for some people

  384. to be forgiven

  385. even if they repent.

  386. What he says is

  387. it is impossible

  388. for them to be brought

  389. to repentance.

  390. In other words,

  391. they never turn

  392. back.

  393. They fall away

  394. and they never turn back.

  395. And Jesus says

  396. a very similar thing

  397. in that passage

  398. about the blasphemy

  399. against the Holy Spirit.

  400. He says it is an eternal sin.

  401. In other words,

  402. it is a permanent

  403. and unchanging

  404. and ongoing state

  405. of willfully refusing

  406. Jesus Christ

  407. who is God's only provision

  408. for forgiveness.

  409. So if you are concerned,

  410. if you have read passages

  411. like this

  412. and you have wondered,

  413. have I passed this point?

  414. If you have been driven

  415. to despair

  416. by that thought,

  417. if you are concerned

  418. that you have done

  419. something so bad

  420. that God cannot

  421. or will not forgive you,

  422. your concern itself

  423. and your desire

  424. to be in right relationship

  425. with God

  426. is clear evidence

  427. that you have not

  428. done so.

  429. The author of Hebrews

  430. did not give this warning

  431. because he thought

  432. that the people

  433. had already passed

  434. this point of no return.

  435. If he thought

  436. they had already passed

  437. the point of no return,

  438. the warning would be useless.

  439. You don't warn somebody

  440. when they've already

  441. fallen off a cliff

  442. and died.

  443. You warn someone

  444. so they don't fall

  445. off the cliff.

  446. It's like the rumble strip

  447. on the highway.

  448. It's not the most pleasant

  449. noise to hear,

  450. but it saves you

  451. from going over the edge

  452. inadvertently

  453. or without realizing it.

  454. Now the reason

  455. why the author

  456. gives this warning

  457. is because he saw

  458. that many of the people

  459. were beginning

  460. to drift away,

  461. to drift down the stream.

  462. They'd become dull,

  463. sluggish,

  464. complacent.

  465. And so he warns them

  466. spiritual complacency

  467. is dangerous.

  468. Drifting toward

  469. the point of no return

  470. begins

  471. often as a gradual process.

  472. Jesus describes

  473. the seed

  474. sown among thorns

  475. as seed that begins

  476. to grow

  477. but is choked out

  478. by the cares

  479. and riches

  480. and pleasures

  481. of this world.

  482. Think of a plant

  483. in the middle

  484. of a field

  485. that is gradually

  486. overtaken by weeds

  487. and thorn bushes

  488. and vines

  489. that gradually

  490. entangle it

  491. and suck the life

  492. out of it.

  493. It doesn't happen

  494. all at once,

  495. but it's a gradual process,

  496. but it ends

  497. in suffocation.

  498. And similarly,

  499. he's warning them

  500. because the path

  501. to the point

  502. of no return

  503. begins

  504. with lots

  505. of small decisions.

  506. Whether it's deciding

  507. that life

  508. is just too busy

  509. so it's not worth

  510. the time to pray

  511. or read the Bible

  512. anymore

  513. or deciding

  514. that it's not worth

  515. coming to church

  516. because you're

  517. just too tired

  518. or deciding

  519. to distance yourself

  520. from other Christians

  521. because you don't

  522. want them to challenge

  523. you and hold you

  524. to a higher standard

  525. or deciding

  526. to tell little lies

  527. out of a desire

  528. to please

  529. other people

  530. or indulging

  531. in hidden

  532. sinful patterns

  533. because they bring

  534. immediate comfort

  535. in a stressful time.

  536. The warning is

  537. when these patterns

  538. continue

  539. unchallenged,

  540. unchanged,

  541. over time,

  542. your heart

  543. becomes increasingly

  544. entangled

  545. in the cares

  546. and riches

  547. and pleasures

  548. of the world

  549. and increasingly

  550. numb

  551. and hardened

  552. toward the reality

  553. of God

  554. and Jesus Christ

  555. and the Holy Spirit.

  556. And so the author

  557. of Hebrews is

  558. throwing a bucket

  559. of ice-cold water

  560. on us

  561. and he's saying

  562. wake up!

  563. Don't be caught

  564. in complacency.

  565. Don't live

  566. a sluggish

  567. Christian life.

  568. Don't continue

  569. along

  570. this dangerous path.

  571. So that's the warning.

  572. But thankfully

  573. the writer of Hebrews

  574. not only gives a warning

  575. because I think

  576. if that's all he gave

  577. we might be startled

  578. but we might not

  579. quite know where

  580. to go next.

  581. He also gives us

  582. a word of comfort

  583. to encourage us

  584. to press on

  585. in verse 9

  586. through 12.

  587. Now in verse 9

  588. his tone shifts

  589. from stern warning

  590. to tender

  591. brotherly affection.

  592. He says

  593. though we speak

  594. in this way

  595. with stern warnings

  596. yet in your case

  597. beloved

  598. we feel sure

  599. of better

  600. things.

  601. Things

  602. that belong

  603. to salvation.

  604. Notice how

  605. the pronouns

  606. shift in this passage.

  607. Verses 1

  608. through 3

  609. he says

  610. therefore let us

  611. go on to maturity.

  612. First person plural.

  613. This we will do

  614. if God permits.

  615. Verse 4

  616. through 8

  617. however

  618. he uses the third person.

  619. He doesn't say

  620. you

  621. he says

  622. in the case

  623. of those

  624. them

  625. they

  626. so he's warning

  627. them

  628. but he's not

  629. putting them

  630. in that category

  631. of people

  632. who have

  633. done that.

  634. But then in verse 9

  635. through 12

  636. he goes back

  637. to the first

  638. and second person

  639. he says

  640. in your case

  641. we feel sure

  642. of better

  643. things.

  644. Now you might ask

  645. why does he

  646. feel sure

  647. of better things?

  648. How can I

  649. feel sure

  650. of better things

  651. for me?

  652. Well in verse 10

  653. he goes on to give

  654. two reasons

  655. for his confidence.

  656. So first

  657. he says

  658. that he is confident

  659. because of

  660. their track record

  661. of work

  662. and love.

  663. Or if we use

  664. the metaphor

  665. of verse 7

  666. he's confident

  667. because of

  668. the good fruit

  669. that he has

  670. already observed

  671. in their lives.

  672. Now later on

  673. in the book

  674. in chapter 10

  675. verse 32

  676. and 34

  677. and chapter 13

  678. verse 1 and 2

  679. he elaborates

  680. on the good fruit

  681. that he's observed

  682. in their lives.

  683. He says

  684. they've endured

  685. a hard struggle

  686. sometimes being

  687. publicly exposed

  688. to reproach

  689. and affliction

  690. because of their

  691. faith in Jesus

  692. sometimes standing

  693. alongside other

  694. Christians who were

  695. mistreated

  696. and imprisoned.

  697. In other words

  698. they faced

  699. suffering

  700. and opposition

  701. things that would

  702. have could have

  703. tempted them

  704. to give up

  705. or turn away

  706. but they didn't

  707. give up

  708. and in fact

  709. in their trials

  710. they held on

  711. to the promises

  712. of Christ.

  713. Chapter 10

  714. verse 34

  715. says

  716. they joyfully

  717. accepted

  718. the loss

  719. of worldly

  720. possessions

  721. and status

  722. because they knew

  723. that they had

  724. a better

  725. and lasting

  726. possession

  727. in Jesus Christ.

  728. now the point

  729. of this

  730. is that

  731. suffering

  732. and trials

  733. will either

  734. drive you

  735. away from

  736. God

  737. into things

  738. like bitterness

  739. and despair

  740. and anger

  741. and anxiety

  742. or they will

  743. drive you

  744. to God

  745. and the Psalms

  746. invite us

  747. to bring

  748. our bitterness

  749. and despair

  750. and anger

  751. and anxiety

  752. to God.

  753. you know

  754. it's very

  755. common

  756. to feel

  757. all of those

  758. emotions

  759. but the question

  760. is will we

  761. hold on

  762. to those

  763. things

  764. deep inside

  765. ourselves

  766. where they'll

  767. gradually eat

  768. away at us

  769. and then poison

  770. our relationships

  771. with others

  772. or will we

  773. bring those

  774. things to

  775. God

  776. honestly

  777. and seek

  778. our refuge

  779. and our help

  780. in him.

  781. you see

  782. when we

  783. suffer

  784. and take

  785. refuge

  786. in Jesus

  787. and bring

  788. all of the

  789. stuff

  790. that we

  791. feel to

  792. him

  793. he begins

  794. to work

  795. in us

  796. things like

  797. humility

  798. and trust

  799. and compassion

  800. and so he

  801. turns

  802. suffering

  803. and evil

  804. into things

  805. that can be

  806. a means

  807. for our

  808. spiritual

  809. growth

  810. and maturity

  811. and Jesus

  812. has been

  813. there

  814. Jesus

  815. himself

  816. has suffered

  817. he knows

  818. what it's

  819. like

  820. to go

  821. through

  822. hard

  823. trials

  824. and opposition

  825. and he

  826. has come

  827. so that we

  828. might never

  829. suffer

  830. alone

  831. but that

  832. all our

  833. sufferings

  834. might be

  835. with him

  836. by our

  837. side

  838. so if

  839. you've

  840. been through

  841. trials

  842. if you can

  843. look back

  844. at your

  845. life

  846. if you've

  847. been through

  848. trials that

  849. could have

  850. pushed you

  851. away from

  852. God

  853. but you're

  854. still here

  855. you still

  856. believe in

  857. Christ

  858. you still

  859. pray

  860. be encouraged

  861. that's a

  862. good sign

  863. now the

  864. second thing

  865. he points

  866. to is not

  867. only their

  868. their work

  869. and their

  870. endurance

  871. through trials

  872. but their

  873. love for

  874. one another

  875. again suffering

  876. and trials

  877. can either

  878. cause us to

  879. distance ourselves

  880. from other

  881. people

  882. or to come

  883. closer together

  884. and stand

  885. together in

  886. the midst

  887. of them

  888. and instead

  889. of distancing

  890. themselves

  891. from each

  892. other

  893. the Hebrews

  894. loved and

  895. served one

  896. another with

  897. warm affection

  898. it says in

  899. chapter 6

  900. verse 10

  901. you have

  902. shown love

  903. for God

  904. in serving

  905. the saints

  906. as you

  907. still do

  908. in other

  909. words they

  910. had served

  911. not only the

  912. Christians in

  913. their own

  914. church but

  915. the saints

  916. more broadly

  917. speaking

  918. Christians

  919. perhaps

  920. throughout

  921. the world

  922. or in

  923. other

  924. churches

  925. chapter 13

  926. verse 1

  927. and 2

  928. tells us

  929. they opened

  930. their homes

  931. to each

  932. other

  933. they loved

  934. each other

  935. like brothers

  936. and sisters

  937. in the family

  938. of God

  939. they even

  940. welcomed

  941. strangers

  942. and foreigners

  943. because they

  944. knew that

  945. God and

  946. Jesus Christ

  947. had welcomed

  948. them

  949. and God

  950. had opened

  951. his home

  952. to them

  953. and so they

  954. opened their

  955. homes

  956. to others

  957. it says

  958. they cared

  959. for those

  960. in prison

  961. had compassion

  962. on them

  963. because they

  964. knew that

  965. Jesus Christ

  966. had paid a

  967. high price

  968. to set them

  969. free

  970. from their

  971. bondage

  972. and so they

  973. cared for

  974. those

  975. who were in

  976. bondage

  977. themselves

  978. and he

  979. says you've

  980. continued to

  981. do these

  982. things

  983. brothers and

  984. sisters

  985. may we be

  986. a church

  987. that is

  988. characterized

  989. by loving

  990. service

  991. to one

  992. another

  993. and in

  994. many ways

  995. we already

  996. are but let

  997. me urge you

  998. let us

  999. continue to

  1000. do so

  1001. more and

  1002. more

  1003. we live in

  1004. a culture

  1005. that's

  1006. it seems

  1007. like

  1008. everybody's

  1009. busy

  1010. right

  1011. hardly anybody

  1012. how are you

  1013. doing

  1014. I mean my

  1015. natural response

  1016. is saying

  1017. things have

  1018. been pretty

  1019. busy lately

  1020. we live in

  1021. a high

  1022. stress

  1023. high achievement

  1024. culture

  1025. that places

  1026. a high value

  1027. on individual

  1028. freedom

  1029. and autonomy

  1030. and privacy

  1031. but the gospel

  1032. tells us that

  1033. Jesus Christ

  1034. willingly laid

  1035. aside

  1036. his freedoms

  1037. and became

  1038. a servant

  1039. to love

  1040. us

  1041. on the night

  1042. that he was

  1043. betrayed

  1044. he knelt down

  1045. and he washed

  1046. his disciples

  1047. feet

  1048. and then he

  1049. said as

  1050. I have loved

  1051. you

  1052. you also

  1053. are to love

  1054. one another

  1055. and by this

  1056. all people

  1057. will know

  1058. that you are

  1059. really my

  1060. disciples if you

  1061. have love

  1062. for one

  1063. another

  1064. and so the

  1065. author of

  1066. Hebrews

  1067. could say

  1068. I see

  1069. your acts

  1070. of loving

  1071. service

  1072. to God's

  1073. people

  1074. your love

  1075. for God

  1076. is shown

  1077. in your

  1078. love

  1079. for others

  1080. and that's

  1081. one of the

  1082. fruits of

  1083. the Holy

  1084. Spirit

  1085. it's another

  1086. sign that you

  1087. have really

  1088. experienced

  1089. salvation

  1090. from God

  1091. because you

  1092. see true

  1093. salvation

  1094. is not a

  1095. temporary

  1096. experience

  1097. that doesn't

  1098. last

  1099. that's not

  1100. real salvation

  1101. at all

  1102. true salvation

  1103. is an eternal

  1104. reality begun

  1105. continued

  1106. and completed

  1107. by the grace

  1108. of God

  1109. and that's

  1110. actually the

  1111. second reason

  1112. why we can

  1113. have assurance

  1114. why we can

  1115. have confidence

  1116. not only because

  1117. of good fruit

  1118. that we see

  1119. in one another's

  1120. lives

  1121. and that we can

  1122. encourage each

  1123. other as we see

  1124. that good fruit

  1125. but ultimately

  1126. because of the

  1127. character

  1128. of God

  1129. the ultimate

  1130. foundation of

  1131. our assurance

  1132. as Christians

  1133. is the character

  1134. of God himself

  1135. and the writer

  1136. of Hebrews

  1137. says this

  1138. in verse 10

  1139. he says

  1140. God is not

  1141. unjust

  1142. so as to

  1143. overlook

  1144. your work

  1145. and your love

  1146. that you have

  1147. shown for his

  1148. name

  1149. you see

  1150. God is the

  1151. source

  1152. of all

  1153. the good fruit

  1154. we produce

  1155. that's why

  1156. the apostle

  1157. Paul calls it

  1158. the fruit

  1159. of

  1160. the Holy Spirit

  1161. not just the

  1162. fruit of

  1163. our good

  1164. efforts

  1165. but the fruit

  1166. of the Holy

  1167. Spirit's work

  1168. in our life

  1169. and in the

  1170. gospel of John

  1171. Jesus says

  1172. I am the vine

  1173. and you are

  1174. the branches

  1175. whoever abides

  1176. in me

  1177. and I in him

  1178. he will bear

  1179. much fruit

  1180. apart from me

  1181. you can do

  1182. nothing

  1183. and he continues

  1184. he says

  1185. you did not

  1186. choose me

  1187. but I chose

  1188. you

  1189. and appointed

  1190. you to go

  1191. and bear

  1192. good fruit

  1193. that will

  1194. last

  1195. you see

  1196. God promises

  1197. that he will

  1198. not overlook

  1199. the good fruit

  1200. that he himself

  1201. has produced

  1202. in our lives

  1203. verse 7

  1204. says land

  1205. that produces

  1206. a crop

  1207. useful

  1208. to those

  1209. for whose sake

  1210. it is cultivated

  1211. receives a blessing

  1212. from God

  1213. Jesus himself

  1214. promised blessings

  1215. to his disciples

  1216. both now

  1217. and in the future

  1218. read through the

  1219. Sermon on the Mount

  1220. it's full of them

  1221. the Beatitudes

  1222. blessed are you

  1223. when people

  1224. revile you

  1225. and persecute you

  1226. and utter all kinds

  1227. of evil against you

  1228. falsely

  1229. on my account

  1230. in that case

  1231. he says

  1232. rejoice and be glad

  1233. for great is your

  1234. reward in heaven

  1235. or in Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1236. chapter 10

  1237. he said to his

  1238. disciples

  1239. he said

  1240. whatever I call

  1241. you to sacrifice

  1242. and leave behind

  1243. for my sake

  1244. and the sake

  1245. of the gospel

  1246. you'll receive

  1247. many times

  1248. more

  1249. and in the age

  1250. to come

  1251. eternal life

  1252. because God

  1253. is not unjust

  1254. when he makes

  1255. a promise

  1256. he will keep it

  1257. he is faithful

  1258. when he produces

  1259. good fruit

  1260. in our lives

  1261. he will sustain it

  1262. and he will reward

  1263. it in the end

  1264. because he

  1265. has done it

  1266. and so he goes

  1267. on

  1268. in verse 11

  1269. he says

  1270. we desire

  1271. for each

  1272. one of you

  1273. to show

  1274. the same

  1275. earnestness

  1276. to have

  1277. the full

  1278. assurance

  1279. of hope

  1280. until the

  1281. end

  1282. so that you

  1283. may not

  1284. be sluggish

  1285. but imitators

  1286. of those

  1287. who through

  1288. faith and

  1289. patience

  1290. inherit

  1291. the promises

  1292. of God

  1293. you see

  1294. the purpose

  1295. of both

  1296. the warning

  1297. and the

  1298. comfort

  1299. is to

  1300. protect us

  1301. from becoming

  1302. complacent

  1303. and you know

  1304. there's no joy

  1305. in spiritual

  1306. complacency

  1307. it's not even

  1308. fun while it

  1309. lasts

  1310. but he's

  1311. spurring us

  1312. on to

  1313. persevere

  1314. in earnest

  1315. love

  1316. verse 10

  1317. in assured

  1318. hope

  1319. verse 11

  1320. and in

  1321. patient faith

  1322. as he says

  1323. in verse 12

  1324. love

  1325. hope

  1326. and faith

  1327. in Jesus

  1328. you see

  1329. the purpose

  1330. of the

  1331. comforting word

  1332. is not to

  1333. comfort us

  1334. in our

  1335. complacency

  1336. but to

  1337. spur us

  1338. on

  1339. to earnest

  1340. love

  1341. for one

  1342. another

  1343. and the

  1344. purpose

  1345. of the

  1346. warning

  1347. is not

  1348. to make

  1349. us

  1350. despair

  1351. and it's

  1352. not to

  1353. make us

  1354. endlessly

  1355. anxiously

  1356. introspective

  1357. either

  1358. but to

  1359. spur us

  1360. on to

  1361. persevere

  1362. in looking

  1363. to Jesus

  1364. with our

  1365. faith and

  1366. hope fixed

  1367. firmly

  1368. on him

  1369. you know

  1370. if you're

  1371. hiking in

  1372. the mountains

  1373. and the

  1374. trail passes

  1375. by some

  1376. steep cliffs

  1377. it is good

  1378. to be aware

  1379. of the

  1380. danger

  1381. but you

  1382. will make

  1383. no progress

  1384. by just

  1385. peeking over

  1386. the edge

  1387. of the cliff

  1388. and imagining

  1389. how horrible

  1390. it would be

  1391. to fall off

  1392. you will just

  1393. make yourself

  1394. dizzy

  1395. and unnecessarily

  1396. scared

  1397. and in the

  1398. same way

  1399. if you

  1400. are endlessly

  1401. anxiously

  1402. introspective

  1403. about your

  1404. spiritual state

  1405. you will not

  1406. make much

  1407. spiritual

  1408. progress

  1409. the encouragement

  1410. here

  1411. is to be

  1412. aware

  1413. and take

  1414. the warning

  1415. seriously

  1416. but to keep

  1417. going up

  1418. the trail

  1419. to follow

  1420. in the

  1421. footsteps

  1422. of those

  1423. who have

  1424. persevered

  1425. in faith

  1426. all the way

  1427. to the end

  1428. and inherited

  1429. the promises

  1430. of God

  1431. and most

  1432. especially

  1433. to fix

  1434. our eyes

  1435. on our

  1436. Lord and

  1437. Savior

  1438. Jesus Christ

  1439. because Jesus

  1440. is the

  1441. pioneer

  1442. of faith

  1443. in other

  1444. words

  1445. he's the

  1446. one

  1447. who's

  1448. blazed

  1449. the trail

  1450. for us

  1451. and he's

  1452. the perfecter

  1453. of faith

  1454. he's the

  1455. beginning

  1456. and he's

  1457. the end

  1458. he stands

  1459. waiting to

  1460. receive us

  1461. at the end

  1462. and he

  1463. watches over

  1464. our every

  1465. step

  1466. along the

  1467. way

  1468. let us

  1469. pray

  1470. Lord Jesus

  1471. where we

  1472. have

  1473. become

  1474. complacent

  1475. we pray

  1476. that you

  1477. would stir

  1478. us up

  1479. to an

  1480. active

  1481. faith

  1482. hope

  1483. and love

  1484. in you

  1485. and where

  1486. we have

  1487. become

  1488. discouraged

  1489. or even

  1490. despairing

  1491. would you

  1492. comfort

  1493. and strengthen

  1494. us

  1495. with your

  1496. words

  1497. of assurance

  1498. and hope

  1499. we pray

  1500. that we

  1501. would live

  1502. a life

  1503. of earnest

  1504. love

  1505. of patient

  1506. faith

  1507. and of

  1508. assured

  1509. hope

  1510. in our

  1511. Lord and

  1512. Savior

  1513. Jesus Christ

  1514. we pray

  1515. in his

  1516. name

  1517. amen
