  1. All right, we're back in Mark tonight, our series in Mark.

  2. We're going to jump into Mark chapter 9 tonight.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  3. So if you want to turn there in the Black Pew Bible, it's page 844.

  4. I think we'll have it on the screens over.

  5. Yep, we'll have it up on the screens too.

  6. But if you want to turn there, Mark chapter 9, we're going to look at verses 2 through

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  7. 29, kind of a big chunk tonight, but I hope we'll see that they hang together in important

  8. ways.

  9. Page 844 in the Pew Bible.

  10. That song we just sang is actually a fitting introduction to this text because the themes

  11. of that song is basically what the end of chapter 8 is about, about Christ saying, if you're

  12. going to follow me, you need to take up your cross and come after me, and that you'll only

  13. find your life if you lose it.

  14. And then Mark records this in chapter 9, verse 2.

  15. And after six days, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain

  16. by themselves.

  17. And he was transfigured before them.

  18. And no one on earth could bleach them.

  19. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

  20. And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here.

  21. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

  22. For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

  23. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud.

  24. This is my beloved son.

  25. Listen to him.

  26. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

  27. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had

  28. seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

  29. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.

  30. And they asked him, why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?

  31. And he said to them, Elijah does come first to restore all things.

  32. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated

  33. with contempt?

  34. But I tell you that Elijah has come.

  35. And they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.

  36. And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and scribes arguing

  37. with them.

  38. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him

  39. and greeted him.

  40. And he asked them, what are you arguing about with them?

  41. And someone from the crowd answered him, teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit

  42. that makes him mute.

  43. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes

  44. rigid.

  45. So I asked your disciples to cast it out.

  46. And they were not able.

  47. And he answered them, oh, faithless generation, how long am I to be with you?

  48. How long am I to bear with you?

  49. Bring him to me.

  50. And they brought the boy to him.

  51. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy and he fell on the ground

  52. and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

  53. And Jesus asked his father, how long has this been happening to him?

  54. And he said, from childhood, and it has often cast him into fire and into water to destroy

  55. him.

  56. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

  57. And Jesus said to him, if you can, all things are possible for the one who believes.

  58. Immediately, the father of the child cried out and said, I believe, help my unbelief.

  59. And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying

  60. to it, you mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.

  61. And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out and the boy was like a corpse so

  62. that most of them said, he is dead.

  63. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose.

  64. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, why are you going to be

  65. why could we not cast it out?

  66. And he said to them, this kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.

  67. So tonight, let me ask us a question.

  68. Who do we listen to?

  69. Who do you listen to?

  70. I don't mean what radio station do you like.

  71. I mean, on a deeper level, at the heart level, who are you listening to?

  72. Whose voice is running in your head?

  73. Because, you know, all of us are listening to someone at that level, right?

  74. Maybe it's your parents.

  75. Maybe it's their voice you hear, you know, whether you like it or not, when you're about

  76. to make a decision or when you get down to what makes you who you are and what gives

  77. you worth.

  78. Maybe you hear your parents' voice in your mind.

  79. Or maybe the voice that you're listening to are your peers.

  80. Maybe the voice of your friends or your colleagues or your neighbors.

  81. Maybe that's what's running and always running sort of in the background.

  82. That voice approving or disapproving of this or that and shaping what you value or what you

  83. pursue.

  84. Maybe you're listening to your peers.

  85. Maybe that's who you're listening to.

  86. Or maybe it's some figure that you respect.

  87. Maybe a teacher or a boss or a mentor or a coach that you've had along the way.

  88. Or maybe a historical figure that you really admire, whose works you've read, whose life

  89. you seek to emulate.

  90. Maybe that's who you listen to.

  91. Some sort of hero in your life.

  92. Or maybe it's none of those.

  93. Maybe you pride yourself on not listening to anyone, ultimately.

  94. Not listening to anyone but yourself.

  95. Ah, and there's some truth to that for all of us, isn't there?

  96. Paul Tripp, who's a pastor and a writer, has often said, you are the most influential

  97. person in your life because you are always talking to yourself.

  98. Do you see the point he's trying to make?

  99. Whose talk are you listening to?

  100. That's who's going to be most influential in your life.

  101. That voice will profoundly shape how you view yourself, your world, how you view God, what

  102. you make of right and wrong, what's good and beautiful and true, what to pursue, what

  103. to attract, what to reject, what to approve of, and what to condemn.

  104. Who are we listening to?

  105. And this dynamic happens not just on the individual level, but on a cultural level too.

  106. Aren't there cultural narratives or sort of stories that we share and that we listen to

  107. that shape our identity and our values?

  108. Just think of the classic sort of narrative of the American dream.

  109. What is it?

  110. Work hard, keep your nose out of trouble, and you will be successful and comfortable.

  111. And yet, we know that that's not always the case.

  112. Sometimes we work hard and we keep our noses out of trouble.

  113. And yet, we experience hardship and affliction and loss.

  114. But we've been listening to those voices for so long telling us that hard work must equal

  115. success and comfort that when it doesn't work out that way, what happens?

  116. We get bitter and angry and we start to blame others, or we start blaming ourselves and beating

  117. ourselves up, and we fall into depression and despair.

  118. You know, the same thing can happen spiritually, actually.

  119. We can buy into certain spiritual narratives and sort of keep on listening to them, even

  120. when they're not at all what God has revealed to be true.

  121. A number of years ago, two sociologists from UNC Chapel Hill did a study of the spirituality

  122. of young people, of teenagers, and then they actually did one a little later of young emerging

  123. adults.

  124. And here's what they found most of them believed.

  125. Here's how I would sum it up, anyway.

  126. They found in this sort of sociological survey that most people believed that God's main

  127. goal is to eliminate all of my discomforts and solve my problems.

  128. And if I do my part, if I'm good and nice and fair, then God will bless me with a happy,

  129. comfortable life.

  130. And if I'm good, I get to go to heaven when I die.

  131. Now, is that the narrative that we should be listening to?

  132. We've been studying the Gospel of Mark through the fall and now into the spring, and if you've

  133. been with us, you know that that narrative, my job is to live a good life and God's job

  134. is to fix my problems for me, doesn't square practically at all with the life and message

  135. of Jesus.

  136. What Jesus calls the Gospel, the good news, what Jesus calls the kingdom of God, God's

  137. reign, is almost utterly opposed to that.

  138. Last week, Jesus told his disciples back in chapter 8 that himself, as the Christ, as

  139. the Messiah, as the true King, that his mission meant the cross.

  140. And then he went on to say, perhaps even more shockingly, that our calling as his disciples

  141. meant nothing less than taking up our cross as well.

  142. But you know, that wasn't the spiritual narrative that the disciples had been listening to.

  143. Like so many of the other sort of Jewish people in that time, to them, the Messiah's job was

  144. to come and to triumph and to conquer, not to suffer.

  145. And that their place in God's kingdom would be determined by how worthy and faithful they

  146. were to him.

  147. That kind of sounds a lot like our default position, doesn't it?

  148. And you know, these voices that we listen to, whether individually, from our parents

  149. or peers or heroes, or whether communally, those sort of cultural and spiritual narratives

  150. that we share, the truth about those things is that they die hard.

  151. We can hear alternative truths again and again and again, but they just don't get through.

  152. So in our text tonight, Jesus takes Peter and James and John up on a mountain by themselves.

  153. And when they're up there, Mark says in very succinct language, he's transfigured before them.

  154. That is, his appearance is transformed.

  155. That's what the word transfigured means.

  156. It's the same word for transformation.

  157. This humble rabbi from Galilee is now blazing white before them.

  158. Don't you love that earthy detail that Mark gives?

  159. He was so white, whiter than anyone could possibly bleach their clothes.

  160. You see, for a moment, Jesus is revealing to them his divine nature.

  161. And what happens in verse 7?

  162. A cloud comes down upon them.

  163. It's just like Exodus, if you remember the Exodus story, when God appears to Moses and Israel

  164. at Mount Sinai in brightness, in fire, and in a cloud.

  165. And that cloud is just like the cloud that would come down in the Old Testament on the tabernacle

  166. and the temple, the very representation of God's own presence.

  167. So you see, what's happening here on the mountain is that for a moment, the curtain is being drawn back.

  168. For a moment, the eternal glory of the divine Son of God, hidden in human flesh, comes blazing through.

  169. Jesus reveals it to them, and they see it.

  170. But then something else happens.

  171. They also see Moses and Elijah.

  172. These two great pillars of Israel's faith.

  173. And the great pillars of the Old Testament Scripture as well.

  174. Moses, of course, representing the law, the first five books.

  175. And Elijah representing the prophets.

  176. And Peter, seeing all this, is terrified.

  177. And in classic Peter fashion, instead of being terrified and remaining silent,

  178. he's terrified and says something, which is sort of always how it goes with Peter.

  179. And he says, let's make three tents for each one of you equally.

  180. And let's stay here forever, and let's commemorate all three of you.

  181. And then God's voice comes from the cloud.

  182. This is my beloved Son.

  183. Listen to Him.

  184. Or we might better say, listen to Him.

  185. You see, Moses and Elijah are there to point to Jesus.

  186. As if to say that He is the fulfillment of all that they had spoken about.

  187. That Jesus Himself is, as it were, the true and final prophet.

  188. The true bringer of God's word.

  189. That the law and the prophets point to and are fulfilled in Him.

  190. You notice at the end of this story of the transfiguration, who's left?

  191. Jesus.

  192. Alone.

  193. It's like the book of Hebrews says, if you've been coming in the morning to our series in Hebrews.

  194. Do you remember how the book of Hebrews starts?

  195. Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, like Moses and Elijah.

  196. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the heir of all things,

  197. through whom also He created the world.

  198. Listen to Him.

  199. If you remember Jesus' baptism back in Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  200. there are similar words, right?

  201. The skies rip open and there's a voice from heaven that says,

  202. This is my beloved Son.

  203. With you, I am well pleased.

  204. There and here in Mark chapter 9, God the Father is affirming the divine identity of Jesus.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  205. But you know, at the baptism, it almost seemed as if those words were directed to Jesus,

  206. as much as to us or as much as to the disciples.

  207. But now, you see, on the mountain, with Moses and Elijah standing by,

  208. it's a command to us.

  209. This is my beloved Son.

  210. Listen to Him.

  211. Listen to Him who fulfills all that the prophets spoke about.

  212. Listen to Him who is the radiance of the glory of God

  213. and the exact imprint of God's nature.

  214. Now, put yourself in the disciples' shoes for a second.

  215. Jesus has just told them in chapter 8

  216. that the way of the kingdom is the way of the cross.

  217. That the path of glory is actually the path of sacrifice and suffering.

  218. That to gain our life, we have to lose it.

  219. And doesn't that cut against every single other voice that we listen to?

  220. So, are these just the ravings of a misguided rabbi from Galilee?

  221. Or are they the very message of life from God Himself?

  222. And in the transfiguration, we see the answer.

  223. The glory of Jesus is revealed.

  224. The Old Testament heroes show up.

  225. And the voice of God speaks.

  226. Listen to Him.

  227. What He's told you is true.

  228. And that means we should listen to Him

  229. when our families are telling us

  230. that our plans to follow Christ

  231. would mean to them throwing their lives away.

  232. And we should listen to Him

  233. when our heroes are telling us

  234. that greatness is found in power

  235. and achievement and self-improvement.

  236. And instead, we should listen to Him

  237. when our peers are telling us

  238. that you only live once

  239. and you've got to seek as much pleasure now

  240. in this life before it's too late.

  241. And we should listen to Him

  242. even when the broader world is telling us

  243. that God ought to be there

  244. to make our lives comfortable

  245. and that our performance

  246. will determine His ability to do so.

  247. Instead, we should be listening to Jesus.

  248. On their way back down the mountain,

  249. Jesus tells them again

  250. not to tell anyone

  251. until after His resurrection.

  252. And again, we've seen this motif a couple times,

  253. this theme in Mark a couple times, right?

  254. And again, the disciples are confused.

  255. And this time they ask Him about Elijah.

  256. Isn't Elijah supposed to come

  257. and restore all things?

  258. How can we be talking about

  259. crosses and suffering, Jesus?

  260. I thought Elijah was supposed to come

  261. and restore all things

  262. and then the day of the Lord would happen

  263. and the Messiah would show up

  264. and it would be peace and glory forevermore.

  265. And you know, that's not a silly question

  266. they're asking

  267. because at the end of the Old Testament

  268. in Malachi chapter 4, verses 5 and 6,

    Malachi 4:5

  269. literally the last verses

  270. of our English Old Testament,

  271. Malachi writes that Elijah will return

  272. before the great and awesome day of the Lord.

  273. But you see, Jesus helps them understand

  274. more properly what Malachi was saying

  275. and what's actually happening.

  276. Because did you notice Jesus says,

  277. Elijah has come

  278. and they did to him whatever they wanted.

  279. And of course, he's referencing there

  280. John the Baptist

  281. because for Jesus,

  282. John the Baptist has fulfilled

  283. Malachi's prophecy about Elijah.

  284. John the Baptist got everything ready

  285. for the day of the Lord.

  286. But what the scribes

  287. and even the disciples here failed to see

  288. is that the Old Testament also says

  289. that the Son of Man

  290. will be treated with contempt.

  291. Jesus probably has in mind Isaiah 53

  292. where the suffering servant of the Lord,

  293. do you remember that passage,

  294. is bruised and crushed

  295. for the sins of his people.

  296. So you see, even after the transfiguration,

  297. the disciples are still having

  298. a hard time seeing

  299. what Jesus wants them to see.

  300. But Jesus is adamant

  301. again and again and again

  302. that the way of the kingdom

  303. is the way of the cross.

  304. And then they're sort of making

  305. their way back down the mountain

  306. and finally they get to the bottom.

  307. And again, we see all this reinforced

  308. another time.

  309. There's a crowd and some scribes

  310. and there's an argument going on

  311. between the scribes

  312. and Jesus' disciples.

  313. And Jesus enters into the crowd

  314. and gets involved,

  315. which is an interesting point, isn't it?

  316. He doesn't stay far off

  317. on the mountain,

  318. basking in glory.

  319. Christ comes down

  320. and gets into the mess

  321. of our broken and sinful lives.

  322. And the disciples too

  323. aren't allowed to stay

  324. on the mountaintop.

  325. They too are brought back down

  326. into the gritty realities of life.

  327. And all this is what Jesus

  328. has been telling them,

  329. that it's not a triumphant march

  330. to the throne,

  331. but it's the self-sacrificing

  332. way of the cross.

  333. And you know, now it seems

  334. at this point in the narrative

  335. that things have gotten even harder

  336. for the disciples.

  337. You remember back in chapter 6,

  338. Jesus gave the disciples

  339. the authority to cast out demons

  340. as they went around preaching

  341. and were given every reason

  342. to think that they were actually

  343. able to do so.

  344. They don't come back saying,

  345. Jesus, what happened?

  346. You gave us that authority

  347. and it didn't work.

  348. No, in fact, in Luke's gospel,

  349. they come back saying,

  350. we did it.

  351. But what happens here?

  352. They aren't able to do it.

  353. They're inadequate.

  354. They fall short.

  355. You see, as they progress

  356. in their time with Jesus,

  357. the battle isn't getting easier.

  358. It seems that it's getting harder.

  359. The scribes are getting

  360. more combative

  361. and the crowds are getting

  362. more hard-hearted,

  363. as Jesus says in verse 19.

  364. And the forces of evil

  365. are getting more entrenched

  366. and more immovable.

  367. And you see, that is often

  368. the way that the Lord will lead us.

  369. He shows us more of himself

  370. to prepare us

  371. for the greater challenges ahead.

  372. Didn't Peter want to stay

  373. on the mountain,

  374. build some tents,

  375. and leave all this messy business

  376. of sin and redemption

  377. down below?

  378. Let's just stay up here, Jesus.

  379. We'll build some tents.

  380. We'll start a tourism thing.

  381. You know, we'll get some people

  382. to come up the mountain,

  383. pay a few denarii or whatever

  384. to check out Moses and Elijah

  385. and you because you're blazing white.

  386. We'll make a little money.

  387. We won't have to get mixed up

  388. in the sticky, sinful realities of life.

  389. How often do we want

  390. our spiritual lives to be like that?

  391. Let's just stay away from the mess

  392. and the sort of experience

  393. up here on the mountaintop.

  394. But you see, the whole reason

  395. Jesus took them up there

  396. was so that they could get

  397. back on the road

  398. because he knew it was

  399. going to get harder

  400. and he wanted them to be prepared.

  401. And you see, if the transfiguration

  402. was meant to drive home the point

  403. that we must listen to Jesus

  404. above all else,

  405. then here at the bottom

  406. of the mountain,

  407. we're taught a lesson

  408. in what it means to trust Jesus

  409. in spite of all else.

  410. When the father of the demon-possessed boy

  411. says,

  412. if you can do anything,

  413. have compassion on us

  414. and help us.

  415. You can almost hear

  416. the resignation in his voice,

  417. can't you?

  418. If you can do anything,

  419. have compassion on us

  420. and help us.

  421. You might be able to, Jesus.

  422. If you can.

  423. I hope you will.

  424. And then what does Jesus do?

  425. He challenges this man.

  426. And how does he challenge them?

  427. He says,

  428. if you can,

  429. all things are possible

  430. for the one who believes.

  431. And with that question,

  432. it's not really a question,

  433. but with that remark,

  434. isn't Jesus forcing this man

  435. to reckon with his unbelief,

  436. to stare it straight in the face

  437. and to be honest?

  438. And at the same time,

  439. Jesus is drawing this man

  440. into a relationship.

  441. If you can.

  442. Aren't all things possible

  443. for the one who believes?

  444. And then the father utters

  445. one of the most honest prayers

  446. I think we can ever pray.

  447. He says,

  448. I believe.

  449. Help my unbelief.

  450. So what does it mean?

  451. To listen to Jesus.

  452. To trust him.

  453. To believe in him.

  454. It doesn't mean

  455. that we don't have doubts.

  456. And it doesn't mean

  457. that we don't have questions.

  458. And it doesn't mean

  459. that we have to be 100%

  460. completely certain.

  461. No.

  462. It means

  463. committing yourself to him.

  464. Even with your doubts

  465. and your questions.

  466. Because then what happens?

  467. The father has just admitted

  468. that his belief

  469. is loaded

  470. with all sorts of doubts

  471. and questions.

  472. It's like a piece of steak

  473. that's just run through

  474. with all sorts of fat

  475. and sinews

  476. and all sorts of stuff

  477. you really don't want

  478. in your meat.

  479. There I am Jesus.

  480. I believe.

  481. Help my unbelief.

  482. And how does Jesus respond?

  483. Is he offended

  484. by the man's

  485. less than certain faith?

  486. Did you see what I just did

  487. up on that mountain?

  488. Come on.

  489. You believe?

  490. Help my unbelief.

  491. No.

  492. No.

  493. Jesus receives the man

  494. and heals his son.

  495. It wasn't utter certainty

  496. that Jesus was looking for.

  497. And by all means

  498. it wasn't the sort of

  499. level of this man's faith

  500. that caused his son

  501. to be healed.

  502. What Jesus was looking for

  503. was just honesty

  504. and a commitment to him.

  505. even in the face of doubts.

  506. You see,

  507. truly trusting in Jesus,

  508. true faith,

  509. is a certain kind

  510. of helplessness.

  511. If the kind of faith

  512. Jesus required,

  513. think about it,

  514. was absolute certainty,

  515. if that's what Jesus

  516. was looking for,

  517. then wouldn't we come to him

  518. full of self-confidence,

  519. confident that we had

  520. it all figured out?

  521. If that's what Jesus wanted

  522. was 100% absolute certainty,

  523. and if I actually had that,

  524. it wouldn't be helplessness

  525. with which I came.

  526. Instead,

  527. what Jesus wants us to do

  528. is to come

  529. with the helpless cry

  530. captured so well

  531. by this Father.

  532. Lord,

  533. I believe.

  534. Help my unbelief.

  535. And at the end

  536. of the section,

  537. the lesson is similar

  538. for the disciples,

  539. isn't it?

  540. You can only drive out

  541. this kind by prayer,

  542. Jesus says to them.

  543. And what is prayer

  544. after all?

  545. Isn't prayer

  546. the acknowledgement

  547. that we can't do it

  548. ourselves?

  549. Isn't prayer

  550. an act

  551. speaking of our own

  552. insufficiency

  553. and inadequacy

  554. that we can't do it.

  555. That's why we pray.

  556. But we pray to a God

  557. who is sufficient

  558. and who is adequate

  559. and who is able.

  560. And this is what Jesus

  561. is trying to tell us.

  562. This is why we have

  563. to listen to him.

  564. Because you see,

  565. every other religion

  566. and every other voice

  567. that you will listen to,

  568. it will give you

  569. lots of advice

  570. on how to give up

  571. your self-gratification

  572. and even your

  573. self-determination

  574. for a greater good.

  575. Every other religion,

  576. every other parent,

  577. every other peer,

  578. every other hero

  579. will give you

  580. lots of advice

  581. on what pleasures

  582. to give up,

  583. on what rules to follow,

  584. on what paths to pursue,

  585. and what principles

  586. to adopt

  587. in order for you

  588. to make it in the end.

  589. But you see,

  590. Jesus is completely different.

  591. The ultimate cross

  592. that we must take up

  593. is not merely

  594. abandoning

  595. our self-gratification,

  596. doing things

  597. for our own pleasure,

  598. and giving up

  599. our self-determination,

  600. being our own Lord.

  601. But ultimately,

  602. Jesus says,

  603. here's what you put

  604. on the cross.

  605. Your self-justification.

  606. Your attempts

  607. to try

  608. to save yourself.

  609. And that's how you know

  610. you've finally crossed over

  611. to real faith in Christ.

  612. Not when you have

  613. all your answers,

  614. all your questions answered,

  615. not when you have

  616. all your doubts resolved,

  617. but when you've stopped

  618. trusting in your own

  619. works and efforts,

  620. when you've stopped

  621. trusting in your own worth

  622. to be accepted by God,

  623. and when you've stopped

  624. trusting even in the own

  625. quantity and quality

  626. of your faith,

  627. and you've just come

  628. to Jesus with honest

  629. and empty hands,

  630. and said,

  631. Lord,

  632. I believe.

  633. Help my unbelief.

  634. Let's pray together.

  635. Lord Jesus,

  636. tonight we want

  637. to acknowledge you

  638. as the one

  639. who is completely

  640. and fully divine.

  641. in this passage

  642. you show us

  643. just a glimpse

  644. of your supreme glory.

  645. Lord,

  646. as Peter will

  647. later write,

  648. he'll say that

  649. on the mountain

  650. they beheld

  651. your majesty.

  652. Lord,

  653. thank you for revealing

  654. your majesty

  655. to us

  656. in the words

  657. of this gospel.

  658. and Lord,

  659. we pray that we

  660. would listen

  661. to you

  662. above and over

  663. all the other voices

  664. that vie for our

  665. attention and for

  666. our heart's allegiance.

  667. Lord,

  668. help us to listen

  669. to you

  670. in the words

  671. of the scripture.

  672. Lord,

  673. where you speak

  674. to us clearly

  675. and powerfully.

  676. and Lord,

  677. for all of us

  678. here tonight,

  679. help us

  680. to come to you

  681. in genuine faith.

  682. Lord,

  683. not a faith

  684. that is anxious

  685. about how pure

  686. and how sound

  687. it is,

  688. but Lord,

  689. that deep helplessness

  690. that acknowledges,

  691. Lord,

  692. that in our sin

  693. we are lost,

  694. but in you

  695. we find grace

  696. and peace.

  697. God,

  698. if any of my friends

  699. here tonight

  700. are struggling

  701. to believe in you,

  702. Lord,

  703. by your spirit

  704. would you grant them

  705. the gift of faith.

  706. Open their eyes,

  707. Lord,

  708. to see their own

  709. helplessness

  710. but your own

  711. Jesus' glory

  712. and sufficiency.

  713. Lord,

  714. thank you

  715. that you do this

  716. for your namesake.

  717. Amen.

  718. Thanks for coming tonight.

  719. In the back

  720. there's some coffee

  721. and some snacks.

  722. Feel free to stick around

  723. as long as you'd like

  724. to talk and just catch up.

  725. It's not like you got

  726. anything else going on

  727. tonight, right?

  728. That was a Super Bowl joke.

  729. That was my one

  730. Super Bowl joke of the night.

  731. Come on.

  732. Give me that one.

  733. Hey,

  734. this week,

  735. get a bulletin

  736. on the way out.

  737. Lots of small groups

  738. happening midweek,

  739. kind of kicking back in

  740. now that the spring is,

  741. or now that we're

  742. sort of into the new year.

  743. Most of the groups

  744. are up and running

  745. full-fledged.

  746. So if you're looking

  747. for some midweek fellowship

  748. and Bible study,

  749. connect with a small group.

  750. Let's end with

  751. the doxology

  752. from the book of Jude.

  753. Now to Him who is able

  754. to keep you from stumbling

  755. and to present you blameless

  756. before the presence

  757. of His glory

  758. with great joy,

  759. to the only God,

  760. our Savior,

  761. through Jesus Christ,

  762. our Lord,

  763. be glory,

  764. majesty,

  765. dominion,

  766. and authority

  767. before all time

  768. and now and forever.

  769. Amen.
